- 0:03This is Living Waters of Grace, the teaching ministry of Clark
- 0:08Wofford, senior pastor of Calvary Chapel of Westmoreland,
- 0:12County of Greensburg, PA. Now here's Pastor Clark as he
- 0:16continues teaching through God's Word.
- 0:37When you're challenged with the will of God, you have the
- 0:40opportunity to, as I started the message day to step back for a
- 0:45minute and say I'm not real sure what I should do here as opposed
- 0:50to this blowing through the the red light.
- 0:52It's good to stop and test your plan and say, Lord, is this your
- 0:56plan? Is this what you want me to do?
- 0:58Or is this what I want to do? And if you give the Lord the
- 1:01chance to answer your prayer, He will clearly show you His will.
- 1:09It can be difficult to discern what God's will is for your
- 1:12life. Sometimes you become anxious
- 1:14that what you think is God's voice is actually just your own
- 1:17subconscious telling you what you want to hear.
- 1:20But Pastor Clark encourages you today to take the time to slow
- 1:23down. When you have those moments of
- 1:25anxiety, God will speak to you through His Word, and the wisdom
- 1:30you gain from being a faithful student will help you learn how
- 1:33to distinguish His will from your own human desires.
- 1:37Now here's Pastor Clark in Acts chapter 18 with today's edition
- 1:41of Living Waters of Grace. There was an assurance that keep
- 1:45doing what you're doing this, maybe down the road you're going
- 1:48to have some issues, and he did. But this wasn't the time that
- 1:51his life is going to be taken. He had opportunity now to be
- 1:56bold and to proclaim Christ in the midst of the culture that
- 2:00wasn't really open to what he had to say.
- 2:03No one's going to hurt him. And so he needed to hear that,
- 2:07I'm sure, in Corinth, because it was a barbaric, godless city.
- 2:11And he was pretty much by himself outside of Priscilla and
- 2:14Aquila at the time in regard to doing this ministry.
- 2:19And I love what it says here. He's encouraging Paul for I have
- 2:24many people in the city. In other words, Paul, there's a
- 2:26lot of people that live here in Corinth that need me, that will
- 2:30come to know who I am because of what it is you're going to tell
- 2:33them. I remember years ago, my brother
- 2:36was a church planner and he had an opportunity to take over a
- 2:40fledgling Baptist Church in Ambridge.
- 2:43It was previously pastored by a transgender, believe it or not,
- 2:48a person dressed up in dresses privately.
- 2:51He was a preacher. I have no idea how that
- 2:53happened. So my brother had to go in and
- 2:54try to get this church back on its feet again.
- 2:57And so we were at a pastors conference and we had an
- 2:59opportunity to talk to Chuck. He had finished one of his
- 3:03messages and we went up and I went in to introduce Pastor
- 3:06Chuck and my brother Doug. And Chuck says where where are
- 3:10you serving? And Doug says Ambridge,
- 3:12Pennsylvania. And and then Doug began to tell
- 3:14him what a terrible city it was. It was, you know, really run
- 3:18down because of steel mills had closed down a lot of drug
- 3:21addiction, alcoholism and poverty.
- 3:25And and I'll never forget what Chuck says.
- 3:27He looked at me, he says couldn't be any worse than
- 3:30Corinth. And he said the dog, he says,
- 3:34you know why you're there. And Doug just looked at him
- 3:37shell shocked. And Chuck said because many
- 3:39people need me there. So wherever there's a church, no
- 3:44matter how big or how small, it's there.
- 3:48And those cities, because people need Jesus, God placed us here
- 3:54in this city because people need the Lord, they need the word,
- 3:57they need to be taught, they need to be fed.
- 4:00So God has all these plans. And so Paul's encouraged by this
- 4:04vision that the Lord gave him, and it says he continued there a
- 4:08year and six months teaching the word of God among them.
- 4:11This particular town was the place that Paul spent his most
- 4:16time. He's never been in a place this
- 4:19long in regard to ministry, 18 months.
- 4:22So he's discipling, he's teaching, he's educating, he's
- 4:25equipping, he's establishing this church.
- 4:28And of course, we studied First and 2nd Corinthians.
- 4:31You remember a lot of the craziness in that church that
- 4:34carried over from the culture, people getting drunk at the
- 4:37agape feast, sexual immorality in the church.
- 4:39I mean, this whole kind of messes egos, some saying, well,
- 4:43I prefer Paul's preaching. I prefer Apollo's preaching.
- 4:46I I prefer Cephas Peters preaching.
- 4:49And Paul had to teach him, hey, it's not what these guys are
- 4:53doing, It's what the spirits doing.
- 4:55All they're doing is watering, watering the word into your
- 4:59heart so only God can give the increase.
- 5:00So he said, you know, you don't have favorites, you don't play
- 5:03this kind of political game. There's a lot of things in the
- 5:06in the city of Corinth, even after the church established
- 5:09that needed to be dealt with. And then it says in verse 12 on
- 5:13Galileo, Galileo was his name was proconsul of Archaea.
- 5:18The Jews with 1 accord rose up against Paul and brought him to
- 5:22the judgment seeing saying this fellow persuades men to worship
- 5:26God contrary to the law. Once again, these rebel rousers,
- 5:30these Jewish people is continually causing problems in
- 5:33the in the city are causing problems again trying to set
- 5:37Paul up and lying about the what it is he's doing.
- 5:41And so when Paul was about to open his mouth, and this is
- 5:44interesting too, I got to give a defense if I'm slandered, if I'm
- 5:48accused of something I didn't do.
- 5:52And the first thing you want to do is clarify to people who are
- 5:56judging or accusing you, especially if it's a legal
- 5:59issue. This is what my testimony is.
- 6:02This is what the truth is. Well, he didn't even have to say
- 6:04anything. He was getting ready to speak
- 6:06this pro consul leader. And this would be in the center
- 6:09of the city, a high platform where people would bring
- 6:11grievances to this judge and he would have to make a ruling.
- 6:15And so Gallio said to the Jews, if it were a matter of
- 6:19wrongdoing or wicked crimes of Jews, there would be reason why
- 6:23I should bear with you. So in other words, he's not
- 6:25going to even take this seriously because this is a
- 6:27conflict between these Jewish people and Paul.
- 6:31But if it's a question of words and names and your own law, look
- 6:34to it yourselves, for I do not want to be a judge of such
- 6:37matters. And he drove them from the
- 6:39judgement seat. So he didn't didn't even listen
- 6:42to them. Now, what's interesting, if he
- 6:44would have made this a criminal case and Paul wouldn't have been
- 6:47able to preach there anymore, the whole gospel in the ministry
- 6:50would have been shut down. But obviously the Lord prevented
- 6:53that from happening. And then verse 17, all the
- 6:56Greeks took Sophanes. This is a guy that took over the
- 6:59synagogue after Christmas, got saved the roller of the
- 7:03synagogue and they beat him before the judgment seat.
- 7:07But Galileo took no notice of these things.
- 7:09So these people are so vindictive and so hateful and
- 7:13they're they're not Jewish people, obviously they're
- 7:15they're Greeks. They take this new leader of the
- 7:18synagogue and they literally beat him.
- 7:21What's interesting is that this sophones eventually came a
- 7:24believer too. And it's talked about in the
- 7:27book of Corinthians how he also was baptized.
- 7:30We see now Paul, he's done in Corinth.
- 7:33This is after the 18 month duration in verse 18.
- 7:36So Paul remained a good while, and then he took leave of the
- 7:40brethren and sailed for Syria, and Priscilla and Aquila were
- 7:44with him. Priscilla and Aquila.
- 7:47And it's like in our church, there's couples and families
- 7:50here that Lewis and I couldn't do what we do apart from your
- 7:53support, your prayers, your love, your concern, your care.
- 7:57There's no way we could do this without encouragement from the
- 8:00body of Christ. And Paul had this blessed
- 8:03encouragement, not only from the churches he planted, but from
- 8:06this special couple, Priscilla and her husband Aquila.
- 8:10And it says here he had his hair cut off at Sancrea, for he had
- 8:15taken a vow. The vow was a Nazarite vow.
- 8:21Paul was Jewish and he still had a affinity and a love for his
- 8:26Jewish history and Jewish tradition.
- 8:28He would never ask a Gentile to follow any kind of Jewish
- 8:33tradition, and these traditions weren't going to mess up the
- 8:36gospel of grace or salvation. This had to do with a personal
- 8:40consecration that Paul sense perhaps being in corn for 18
- 8:44months. He probably was somewhat
- 8:46defiled. He felt he had been exposed to
- 8:49some godless things and some situations.
- 8:51He wasn't intentionally sinning or anything, but I'm sure he had
- 8:55to be tempted at times and he just wanted to get deeper with
- 8:58the Lord. So this vow was a promise before
- 9:01God of deeper sanctification, and it would be done by cutting
- 9:06his hair and taking a vow of not partaking of the Grapevine for
- 9:1130 days. And John the Baptist and Samson,
- 9:16of course, took these Nazarite vows for the rest of their life.
- 9:20But Paul felt compelled that he wanted to do this.
- 9:24And This is why he took the vow and why he had his hair cut off,
- 9:27it says. And he came to Ephesus and left
- 9:30them there. So he, he goes down to Ephesus,
- 9:32stops there briefly. Of course, we know there's a
- 9:34church in Ephesus. There's a book called Ephesians.
- 9:36We've studied that. We'll get there again.
- 9:39But he himself again enters in the synagogue and reason with
- 9:42the Jews. So wherever Paul went, the first
- 9:45stop was not Chick-fil-A, right? That's where we go Chick-fil-A,
- 9:50right? So Paul is, you know, finish
- 9:52this Nazarite vow. He goes into the synagogue and
- 9:55he's preaching the gospel again. When they asked him to stay a
- 9:58longer time with them, he did not consent but took leave of
- 10:02them, saying, I must by all means keep this coming feast in
- 10:05Jerusalem, but I'll return again to you, God willing.
- 10:08And he sailed from Ephesus. What's interesting was Paul
- 10:12wanted to go to Ephesus a couple years before this time and he
- 10:16was forbid he wasn't able to go. It wasn't God's will.
- 10:19And now he has the ability to pass through and he's going to
- 10:22go back and have a powerful ministry and in the city of
- 10:25Ephesus and Priscilla and Aquila will be working there as well.
- 10:30When you think about God's will, you have a plan.
- 10:33I have a plan. I want to do this.
- 10:35I want to go there, I want to buy this.
- 10:37I want to work here. I want to whatever and whenever
- 10:42God's got control of your life, you can't, and I'm thankful for
- 10:47this. God knows where you're at
- 10:50spiritually. And when you're tested to
- 10:53challenge the will of God and you go opposite of will of God,
- 11:00then there's conflict. Things don't work out like you
- 11:03were hoping they would or wanted them to work out.
- 11:07When you're challenged with the will of God, you have the
- 11:10opportunity to, as I started the message day, to step back for a
- 11:15minute and say, I'm not real sure what I should do here as
- 11:19opposed to this blowing through the the red light.
- 11:22It's good to stop and test your plan and say, Lord, is this your
- 11:26plan? Is this what you want me to do?
- 11:28Or is this what I want to do? And if you give the Lord the
- 11:31chance to answer your prayer, He will clearly show you His will.
- 11:39But we don't many times have the patience to wait upon the Lord
- 11:44for His will. Now some things are maybe Gray.
- 11:49Well, should I do AB or C? Well, God doesn't see problems
- 11:53with any of those. Is there a perfect will?
- 11:55Yeah, there's always a perfect will, but there's a prevenient
- 11:59will, I guess, or a will that he preferred B.
- 12:01But you take A, he's still going to work in your life and bless
- 12:04you and, and help you. But it's good to to want to know
- 12:07the perfect will of God. So Paul, instead of just saying
- 12:10whenever he couldn't go to Ephesus before I'm going anyway,
- 12:13I'm going to do this. And he didn't.
- 12:15And now we see in God's sovereignty that he eventually
- 12:19got to this place he wanted to be.
- 12:21Then stay day long this time, but he's going to get a chance
- 12:24to go back. And when he had landed at
- 12:26Caesarea, he gone up and greeted the church.
- 12:30He's in Jerusalem, he's meeting everybody, giving him updates of
- 12:34his three-year missionary journey, where he's been, what's
- 12:37happened. And then he goes down to his
- 12:39home church, Antioch, where he was sent out from this
- 12:43tremendous time, I'm sure to be able to give everybody an
- 12:46update. And after he had spent some time
- 12:49there, he departed and went over to the region of Galatia and
- 12:52Phrygia in order to strengthening of all the
- 12:55disciples. So a 1500 mile journey now from
- 12:59Antioch to these other regions that he's going to be doing
- 13:03ministry in places like Iconium and Tarsus and Derby and Lystra
- 13:09and Antioch. And he's wanting to see, are
- 13:12these people going deeper in Christ?
- 13:15Where are they at spiritually in regard to their passion for the
- 13:18ministry and the gospel? I sense, you know, that the Holy
- 13:22Spirit visits us every time we gather.
- 13:24He lives in us. He's omnipresent and He's
- 13:29searching the audience here today, like, where are you with
- 13:31Christ today? Where's the pastor?
- 13:34Where's the worship people? Where all the people serving
- 13:37here? Where are we with the Lord?
- 13:39Are we here going through the motions?
- 13:41Are we here to have God exercise our hearts and to take us deeper
- 13:45and challenge our thoughts and give us more clarity on His will
- 13:50and His purposes for our lives? Maybe He's calling us to
- 13:53ministry, some kind of ministry here in the church, and we've
- 13:56been holding back. We don't know why, we just do
- 13:59sometimes all these kind of things are happening in in the
- 14:02room whenever we hear the word and, and God's at work in the
- 14:06word and through the word. And I don't have the radar
- 14:10ability to know exactly what it is he wants to say to you today.
- 14:14But the Holy Spirit does and he knows how to take something that
- 14:19maybe I didn't even really cover.
- 14:21And he's going to talk to you specifically about something he
- 14:24wants you to deal with personally.
- 14:26And he challenges your heart. He causes you to think about
- 14:30some things maybe you haven't thought about for a while or
- 14:32maybe never thought about. And that's how awesome our God
- 14:35is. And I'm so thankful that, you
- 14:39know, when I come here to preach, I have a limited ability
- 14:43in regard to what it is I do. But God has unlimited ability.
- 14:48And so if we allow him to speak between the lines, if you may,
- 14:53or in the silence when nothing's being said, then we begin to
- 14:59hear something from God. God spoke to me today at
- 15:03Calvary. He showed me this.
- 15:06I need to pray about that. I think this is what he's
- 15:11calling me to. This is what I sense His will
- 15:15might be giving God the opportunity to work in the midst
- 15:20of the time of worship and the and the teaching of the Word.
- 15:25And then we, we moved on into this last section here as he's
- 15:29out there checking out the churches, seeing how people are
- 15:31doing, you know, just thinking too, what if Paul showed up here
- 15:34today, if you could and came up here and, and I sat down, what
- 15:38would he ask us? What would he say to us?
- 15:44What would he think about the ministry here?
- 15:48That's something to think about. I know he would be interested in
- 15:55your growth. Are you maturing?
- 15:59Are you becoming more holy? Are you loving God more?
- 16:04Are you learning to love people more?
- 16:06Are you having an influence on people in your life for the
- 16:10gospel and for the sake of Christ?
- 16:14And if we weren't, he wouldn't condemn us or anything.
- 16:18He just encouraged us and exhort us that we need to get right
- 16:22with God get get closer to the Lord surrender more so in verse
- 16:2724. Now a certain Jew named Apollos
- 16:29and of course Apollos is mentioned in the book of
- 16:32Corinthians. I'm a poem of Apollos.
- 16:34I'm a Cephas born at Alexandria, an eloquent man and mighty in
- 16:39the Scriptures came to Ephesus. Now there's no indication of
- 16:43where this guy came from or he wasn't coming from another
- 16:45church or whatever. He he obviously was a lover of
- 16:48God and, and called by God and compelled by God that he's just
- 16:51going to go out and, and preach. This man had been instructed in
- 16:56the way of the Lord and being fervent in spirit, he spoke and
- 17:00taught accurately the things of the Lord, though he knew only
- 17:03the baptism of John. So he was a disciple of John the
- 17:07Baptist. He knew who Jesus was, what he
- 17:09did, what he accomplished, He's Messiah.
- 17:11But he didn't understand a whole lot about the church, the plan
- 17:14of God for the church, let alone the work of the Holy Spirit.
- 17:17He had some holes in his ability to teach, but he was very, very
- 17:22gifted and he had a real zeal and a very inspirational kind of
- 17:26speaker of the people would respond to.
- 17:29And he was taught in the ways of the Lord throughout the
- 17:33teachings of the Old Testament at the time, fervent in spirit,
- 17:36meaning he was on fire for God. And he didn't teach anything
- 17:41inaccurate. It says he taught accurately the
- 17:43things of the Lord, taught accurately the things that he
- 17:46knew. But the one pitfall was he only
- 17:49knew of the baptism of John. So he began to speak boldly in
- 17:53the synagogue and when Aquila and Priscilla heard him, they
- 17:57took him aside and explained to him the way of God more
- 18:00accurately. So it'd be like me or Lewis
- 18:03here. We're done preaching and a
- 18:07couple mature couple, godly couple deep couple wants to have
- 18:12coffee with this Afrin said. Boy, that was a really blessed
- 18:15message that you you brought. We wanted to share with you some
- 18:18other things. I don't know if you ever knew
- 18:20about this or thought about this or heard about this.
- 18:23And, and he was a humble guy because he didn't act like, who
- 18:26are you to talk to me, right? And it was a woman and a man
- 18:30that's not a man, a godly woman and a godly man ministering to
- 18:35this fellow Apollos. And so they, they took him aside
- 18:41and they explained to him more accurately or more detailed the
- 18:46things that he needed to know about so he could be a better
- 18:49servant in the ministry. I'm so thankful I, I, I have
- 18:54many influential people in this church that have helped me get
- 18:57better at what I do. And Louis feels the same way
- 19:00that we're growing in our ministries.
- 19:03We're learning more about how to serve God with you guys.
- 19:07We're, we're in process as well. And there's blind spots.
- 19:11We have sometimes the things we didn't see or know.
- 19:13And so you know, someone has a conversation or whatever, and it
- 19:16helps us to to be more of a blessing and no pride, no ego in
- 19:21in, in what it is we do. And we need God's help more than
- 19:24ever. And what it is we're called to
- 19:26do, especially in these very, very challenging days of of
- 19:30ministry in the world that we live in today.
- 19:33But equivalent Priscilla, again, I can't emphasize enough couples
- 19:37in the church, younger couples, older couples, allow God to use
- 19:41your ministry together as couples.
- 19:43A husband and a wife team in ministry is powerful.
- 19:47I believe that Priscilla was a little bit more, not the head of
- 19:51the home, but she was more influential, I think in some
- 19:55degrees in the church. Maybe she had more time or
- 19:57whatever just gifting upon her. But it's evident in the
- 20:01Scriptures that God uses deep women of God, doesn't he?
- 20:05He does not to teach as a pastor, not to teach men per SE
- 20:10in a public setting, but to share the truth of the Word of
- 20:14God. My wife, Cindy, she's the most
- 20:17influential woman in my life spiritually.
- 20:19I need her counsel even when I don't feel like hearing it, need
- 20:25her encouragement, need her criticism.
- 20:28Whatever it is that God wants to pour through her, I need to be
- 20:31open to. And I've learned after 51 years
- 20:34to realize that God speaks through her life in a mighty
- 20:36way. We move on here.
- 20:39And when he had desired to cross to IKEA, the brother wrote,
- 20:45exhorting the disciples to receive him.
- 20:47So in other words, there's a letter of accommodation here
- 20:50that's going to go with Apollo's.
- 20:52Hey, this guy's a good teacher. He's sound, he's faithful.
- 20:55He's not a heretic. You can trust him.
- 20:58Invite him with open arms into your church.
- 21:01It says he greatly helped those who had believed through grace.
- 21:05And that's how we believe the gospel.
- 21:07It's all through grace, right? By grace, we've been saved
- 21:11through faith, and that is not of ourselves.
- 21:14It's a gift of God, not of works.
- 21:16And no one can boast the gospel of grace, right?
- 21:20We're praying this morning. Lord, help us to be gracious
- 21:22people. Help us to give grace.
- 21:25Help us to receive grace. Help us to teach grace and to
- 21:29preach grace so that the people that here and are part of this
- 21:34ministry can grow and abound in the grace of God.
- 21:39For it says in verse 28 he vigorously refuted the Jews
- 21:44publicly showing from the scriptures that Jesus is the
- 21:47Christ. And I, I believe we need to be
- 21:50vigorous in our proclamation of the gospel, not milk toast or
- 21:54watering things down because we're afraid of offending
- 21:57people. Jesus is the Christ, the Son of
- 22:01the living God. There's no other name under
- 22:03heaven given among men by which we must be saved.
- 22:07Jesus Christ is the only way. He is the way, He is the truth.
- 22:12He is the life. No man comes to the Father but
- 22:15through him. You mean to tell me you can't go
- 22:17to heaven unless you have Jesus? That's exactly what we're
- 22:21saying, right? Well, isn't that bigoted?
- 22:23There Isn't that, you know, single minded or arrogant or you
- 22:27know, whatever, Hey, we're just telling you what the Bible says.
- 22:31We're telling you what the truth is.
- 22:33We're telling you what the gospel is.
- 22:35It's all about Jesus Christ and him crucified, his death, his
- 22:39burial, his resurrection. So this is what this man
- 22:42Apollo's did. He vigorously refuted the
- 22:45rejection and the negativity of the Jewish people when they
- 22:49tried to deny that Jesus was a Messiah.
- 22:52He didn't let up and he showed them not from his own wisdom or
- 22:56his own ability. He showed them from the
- 22:58scriptures that Jesus is the Christ.
- 23:02Amen. And that's what we do.
- 23:04We show people right one another through the scriptures that
- 23:09Jesus is the Christ. Father God, we thank you Lord,
- 23:13we pray now that you would take this word that we studied and
- 23:16seal it into our hearts. Is there any bitterness or
- 23:19unforgiveness or self centeredness or lust or idols or
- 23:24whatever, Lord, that shouldn't be there as a child of God?
- 23:29Lord, forgive us and wash those things out if they're there.
- 23:34And Father, if there's anyone here today that's never come to
- 23:37faith in Jesus Christ, that the day you would knock on their
- 23:40hearts, Father, and show them that you died for them and that
- 23:46you rose again from the dead, that they might have everlasting
- 23:48life. And the day would be the day
- 23:51that they would believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of
- 23:54the living God. Thanks for joining us on this
- 23:58journey through Acts. On today's edition of Living
- 24:01Waters of Grace, Pastor Clark shares that one of the most
- 24:04remarkable things about the book of Acts is how it shows the
- 24:08disciples transformation. The followers of Jesus we meet
- 24:12here are very different from the often confused and fearful
- 24:17disciples in the Gospels. After Jesus's death and
- 24:21resurrection, and especially through the power of the Holy
- 24:24Spirit, the apostles experienced a profound change in their
- 24:29hearts and boldness. Their faith became unwavering,
- 24:33and they moved forward with courage to spread the gospel
- 24:36despite opposition and hardship. Acts reminds us that the same
- 24:41Spirit who empowered them is at work in US today, shaping our
- 24:46hearts and giving us strength to live boldly for Christ.
