- 1:19of his life. It's an ounce of prevention. Now it's time for us
- 1:23to get into today's episode of The Saint, and we do have a few
- 1:27lost episodes between last week and this week's. The original air date is September
- 1:34the eighteenth of nineteen forty nine, and the popular title for it is The
- 1:40color Blind Killer The Adventures of the Saint, starring Vincent Price. The Saint,
- 2:10based on character is created by Leslie charteris a non to millions from books,
- 2:15magazines, and motion pictures. The Robinhood of modern crime now comes to
- 2:20radio Darling Hollywood's brilliant and talented actor Vincent Price as the Saint. Hello.
- 2:31How is my favorite shipboard acquaintance this easonmon you startled me? Can hardly see
- 2:37you through the fog here on day? Yes, it is getting thicker,
- 2:39isn't it? But I suppose it's to be expected. Last night nature went
- 2:43on a binge of moonshine, and this is her foggy morning after. How
- 2:49can you tell through the fog? So you know you have a very pretty
- 2:53laugh, farmer. I'll listen for it in all of your pictures from now
- 2:55on. Thank you. But I'm I'm a going to make any more pictures.
- 3:00I'm retiring, retiring at the peak of your career. I'm just tired
- 3:05of pictures that all, Barbara, You'll never be able to run away from
- 3:09it. What do you mean I'm referring to whatever it is that frightens you.
- 3:14Why don't you tell me about it? Barbara, there's nothing to care.
- 3:16I'm I'm tired. I need to raise see Simon, don't let me
- 3:21talk about it. Some things that someone's standing there. No, I don't
- 3:25see anyone. You are nervous. I could confide in someone if I could
- 3:31tell you what Perhaps I already know more than you think I do. You're
- 3:37cold? Where's your rab over there? Some places in one of those dictures,
- 3:40I'll find it. I don't see it here, Barbara. You're sure
- 3:46your Barbara behind you? Look Barbara, Barbara, man overboard, Man overboard.
- 3:54Maybe you'd like a swim through Saint Oh, oh, mister templar,
- 4:16mister templar, oh, hell. I suppose the usual question is why am
- 4:23I? Sometimes they awaken from your type of custom, make comma asking whoeverdent?
- 4:30I wasn't yet quite that hard. I even remember who you are,
- 4:33Doctor Norman. It is doctor Norman, celebrated archiatrist. Isn't that? It's
- 4:38very good? But I'm afraid I must still confine you here to the ship's
- 4:42in semiary for a while. Possible concussion. They tell me what makes a
- 4:46famous neurologists like you pose mere ship's doctor. I'm really not posing, Patridge.
- 4:54The ship's position is ill. I was within earshot when I heard the
- 4:57familiar call. Is there a doctor in the house? And I know Simon,
- 5:01don't try to get up. I have a flash here if a drink
- 5:04will make you happy? Oh not right now, thank you. I recall
- 5:08I have some unfinished business to attend. Yeah, they couldn't find her and
- 5:14sayfall she's gone. It was a horrible accident. Horrible, yes, accident.
- 5:20No you mean to say she didn't fall over book, she was murdered.
- 5:25Murdered, But who I think I know who? My head like the
- 5:30averade improving ground. I will make you a seditive. You know you're not
- 5:33looking very well. I always look like this, and I'm angry. Only
- 5:38one cure. Yes, I know the lady with the scales. No,
- 5:41no, Mada'm just you know. Typically I've been curious about what makes a
- 5:46man like you. Now I'll tell you every eight days or so, someone
- 5:51winds me up. Right now, I'm wound up height height with jored.
- 5:57But if it's the chiacterst, I would advise you to unwise. Yeah,
- 6:04I think this would. You can sleep up a while. Thank you.
- 6:09You say you think you know who killed Barbara. I was wrong. I
- 6:14do know, and I think you ought to talk to me. And why
- 6:16you said you think I need that charactry doctor. I think you're too taught
- 6:20at the moment that bless your concussion might be dangerous. Very well, doctor,
- 6:26all unwined, I'll tell you the entire story if you don't mind,
- 6:30Simon here this will help you vision the metronome the guy had suffered. But
- 6:36no, no, I don't mind. I've never met Barbara Brook, although
- 6:43I doubt if there's a human being alive who hasn't heard of her or seen
- 6:46her in the movies. I first saw her the day we boarded ship.
- 6:50There was something in her expression, in the way she walked and talked and
- 6:55smiled, and immediately told me here with someone I should know. Her entire
- 7:00demeanor was an attitude of invitations at my fear, doctor. She was a
- 7:05frightened lady. She wanted someone near her. I walked over to her there
- 7:11on deck and immediately made myself useful. Her steward evidently had become busy elsewhere,
- 7:15though I kissed my hat and said, somewhat idiotically, get your program
- 7:20here, lady. You can't tell the state rooms without the numbers. Your
- 7:25steward seems to have deserted you. I sealed the scow before, so it's
- 7:29the direction to your stateroom. You're looking for. I would like you.
- 7:32I thank you very very much this way. My name is Temperance Simon,
- 7:42for sure, and of course your Barbara Brooks. You know we've passed the
- 7:46bar on route to a thirty six main deck. There's an old fashioned with
- 7:50a new acquaintance sound in it will a little later here on the ship.
- 7:57Oh, there's double acts us. You're going, nichol. I think I
- 8:03saw the man you meant. It's North Centers gentleman named Rader. I don't
- 8:09know that name. I'm sure you've heard of still Raider. He's just the
- 8:11biggest sign his line of work as you are in yours. What is his
- 8:16line of work? Well, he's uh, he's an extreminy of human beings,
- 8:22obvious in the moment I first saw you. Why don't you tell me?
- 8:26No, I can't know I procured good. A reason is any for
- 8:28not telling me, But I must warn you I have a peculiar talent for
- 8:31finding things out for myself. No, you must have do it? You
- 8:35please? Please? Hello Rader? Well mm hm, world's getting smaller,
- 8:54yes, yes, but I understand you're doing your share disease that it doesn't
- 8:58get over crowded, saving for your health again or just having just traveling rader?
- 9:03Why does the mirror glimpse of you rounding her corner got a lady's pet
- 9:09and chattering lady. I don't know any ladies obviously, and she thought I
- 9:13was someone else. Maybe if you're of a mind to annoy her, you
- 9:16wish you were look the same, just soaked up sunshine on this cruise.
- 9:20Don't go poking in any dark places might be Oh what sort of bad rader?
- 9:26A big shot? Just so there's no misunderstanding, you butt in where
- 9:31you ain't welcome on this cruise, and yet and I'll kill you. I
- 9:43wish your head shut. And it feels as if a regimental crap game was
- 9:46going on in spite of it with jet propelled dyke. You haven't drunk your
- 9:50sedative yet? Here? Oh thank you? Shall I go on taking the
- 9:54load off of my concussion by army. I think I was president, Yes,
- 10:00doctor, you were. It was the night of that ridiculous costume ball
- 10:03shift Captains is a fond of arrangement. I remember we were at the bar
- 10:09together. You were a pirate at of course, yes, you were a
- 10:13clown. The ball was loaded with clowns, some of them not even aware
- 10:18of their clownishment. But it was gay and srightly the music. I remember
- 10:24our conversation. Doctor. You suddenly appeared at my elbow and said, in
- 10:28the most shivery, sinister manner. You know, Templar, I have a
- 10:33confession to mix to you. Well, I'm always interested in confession, the
- 10:37doctor. I've had a schoolboy crush on the beautiful Barbara ever since I saw
- 10:41her and pictures first, Tell me what does one do about it? Well,
- 10:46I know exactly what I would do if I were you, doctor.
- 10:48Yes, I can doubt the nearest by kent at the prices we judged.
- 10:52I think I was hoping you'd cut it fellow in on your acquaintanceship, Templar.
- 10:58But if you want to reduce me, won't you at least show me
- 11:03which mask she's heading under? I think I might be able to make my
- 11:05own introduction. Very well, doctor, look for a self like figure in
- 11:09a blue and yellow holloquin costume. Thank you, Templar, Thank you,
- 11:15And if you should ever need a good sick ay as the crisis you try,
- 11:18that'll be seen. Don't turn around, mister Temper. I have a
- 11:24pistol and a smaller back, and I really is that any way to enjoy
- 11:28a wall in Saint Andason hard? Well, I'm all he is except for
- 11:31the small of my back, which fields abnormally large at the moment, an
- 11:35arrangements of the made saints, I mean a big hit of lettuce. If
- 11:39they go through all the signs, say keep up, say that you do
- 11:43now, don't turn around. It's custom so pretty. I'd hate to have
- 11:48to put a hole from my pocket. Well, it's probably just a coincidence,
- 11:50but I've acquired the same regard for the small of my back. Keep
- 11:54regarding it that a way, saint, don't let on nose, wonder where
- 11:56it doesn't belong, And you might again, but for getting you saw certain
- 12:01people go to this boat. See just tell me how you're going to swing
- 12:05it? Missus Miller wouldn't be surprised. I'd recognize the notorious Lil Miller's voice
- 12:11on a party line. How are you going to take him? Little U
- 12:13palm days? Or or to have the mark deck? He sing just a
- 12:18touch and your little little what's the matter? Little? You're lucky saying not
- 12:28a shot deep? Are heir? No crowd howd all you want to?
- 12:33She won't mind now, is she? Yes? It's the letto in the
- 12:35back leaves very little doubts she's dead. You're no Simon. I would never
- 12:48have faced, say late missus Miller for a professional card shop. She wants
- 12:52anything but the type professional card shops always anything but the type. Doctor.
- 12:56Yeah, you think I actually played bridge with it myself with the cook and
- 13:01they hot headed when it said. Well, because my old grandmother used to
- 13:05say, doctor, beware of lady thieves with red hair. I guess the
- 13:09lady's red hair accounted for the lack of insulation and her temperaments. How does
- 13:15your head feel better? Doctor? Much more? You still haven't touched your
- 13:20senity, have I? I think you'll find it it help side here?
- 13:24Oh thank you? Well, you know, shortly after the murder of missus
- 13:28Miller, doctor I called on her bereaved husband than the partner in crime.
- 13:33A very interesting visitor was you have the next for making all of your visits
- 13:37in the Simons? And I found Miller in the bar quenching his stara with
- 13:41the merry waters of the river of forgetful fifty grand in the palm of our
- 13:48hands and beep, No more limb, no more lil, no more sucker,
- 13:52no more sucker, Beep, no more fifty grand I see you valued
- 13:56your wife Highley, who was the sucker? Miller? Ah, you're funny.
- 14:03Tell me what's still Raider cruising for Miller? And don't tell me it's
- 14:07a coincidence he's on board the same ship. You get funnier and funnier.
- 14:11Why is Barbara Brooks so afraid of Raider? You ain't even warm? Thanks,
- 14:15You're a mile wide of the target and I'd better use a different kind
- 14:20of ammunition than manner. Yeah, like what like a little murder performed on
- 14:24an unwilling sucker in Reno? Well you know about that. You won't like
- 14:30going back to Reno, Miller. It gets hot in the summer time,
- 14:33especially in the penitential Well Raider with fillowing me on this deal, he I
- 14:39wasn't gonna say anything, feel honest. I was just Miller. I always
- 14:43knew someday you'd choken their yellow. I thought you and I had a little
- 14:48understanding. Saint. You've got a reputation for wrong thoughts, Rader. Yeah,
- 14:52but right or wrong, I've backed my ideas up to the hill.
- 14:54Keep that frog stick around the cover raider I might take it away from and
- 15:00the Dutch courage that rides with it too. I'll keep it hidden. And
- 15:03now you just be careful of the places where the lightstone shine saints. Come
- 15:07on, and I want to talk with you, well, I'll be out
- 15:11in a little wild phil. I want to drink dunk enough. Come on,
- 15:16you'd better go, Miller. And if you can't talk your way out
- 15:18of it, my regards to the fishes, and I recall it well.
- 15:30Shortly after, mister Leder passed on his second warning that you and I met
- 15:33for the first time professional, Yes, doctor, the very next night,
- 15:37and I am very surprised at you. He'd want you to stay away from
- 15:41that place, yes doctor, so he had. But I'm perverse by nature
- 15:45and I like to poke around. I was strolling around the deck with Barbara,
- 15:48getting moon burned and trying desperately to get some more information. So wonderful
- 15:56having you near, as Simon, I feel, say, hey, I
- 16:00refuse to accept the compliment, particularly on a moonlit night at sea. I'm
- 16:06offerring to danger, Simon, not remain of from the very same thing.
- 16:10I'd like to join the team Barbara, why don't you read, because if
- 16:15I did, we'd spost be dead that morning. I'm not going to organize
- 16:19silent good night. Don't turn around, Setler. I've got a I know,
- 16:27I've gun pointed at the small of my back. That's it. Now
- 16:32keep away from Barbara Brooks. Am I clear? Clear enough? Anything else?
- 16:37Yeah? Just so it sinks in sink. Take this along the rate
- 16:41Later on the fire once again, you went to the picture doctor Norman.
- 16:55You found me there, lying on the deck, basking in moonlight and blood.
- 17:00He go on, Simon, tell me the rest of it. Well,
- 17:03after your neat job of balconizing me, thus saving me a trip to
- 17:07the ship's doctor and innumerable words of explanation, I hit upon a strategy,
- 17:14and my next visit found me calling in the lions den. WHOA, I
- 17:19tell you, you're being made a Patsy raider. You're on the verge of
- 17:22being demoted back to second class hoodlum. I can take care of myself,
- 17:29and I admit a minor sandbagging committed in your good name doesn't amount too much
- 17:33rader. But what if the same someone likes your name it designs to use
- 17:37it in other ways? What do you mean? I mean murder? You're
- 17:41a lead pipe stinch to pay for one of your own someday, rader.
- 17:45But meanwhile, how would you feel gett hung for somebody else's Shenanigan? I'd
- 17:48vienna you sure word. Look, I'm not rigged up with no murder.
- 17:52Saint Little meant fifty grand U's alive. That's what we figured. The sucker
- 17:56was good for. Man, that's a good enough reason for wanting lil among
- 17:59the present instead of the late raider. Tell me what was the angle,
- 18:03black man? Nah? No, nothing so crude. Saint I sponsored the
- 18:07party, spot him, finger him and oil them and the miller squeezing through
- 18:10a deck of card Guy's a sucker for good looking James and card games.
- 18:12That's all that sounds very uncomplicated, easy picked. The guy ain't had the
- 18:17coin long enough to be smart about it. Who's the guy he makes water
- 18:19heating the fat man with the diamonds from pathetic that's sucker. I should have
- 18:23tumbled. It looks like you did. I thought you were out for a
- 18:27bust up. Fifty g's a lot of money, Saint I figured if I
- 18:30could scary the insurance, how about Barbara Brook deal me out. I'm not
- 18:37in on whatever the caper is there. She saw you the day we sailed
- 18:40and she got scared. Maybe it's because I ain't exactly pretty. But if
- 18:44you really want to know something to saint, I'll tell you. I was
- 18:47propositioned on the stunt again staid Dame a few weeks before we sailed. I
- 18:49turned it down. The Big Dough too a deal, Yeah, big dough
- 18:53to bump her off. Not for me, though, Nah, she's too
- 18:56prominent, too much heat on those jobs who made the offer. Rader,
- 18:59he wasn't exactly interested in. Leave him calling court saying John Smith was.
- 19:03I'm concerned. But he had a description, didn't he? Everybody has a
- 19:06description? I sure sure he was a medium sized guy with the light who
- 19:11turned him off? Get down, brown tye blue shirt, brown tie,
- 19:22blue shirt, brown tie, blue shirt. Not a very harmonious cal scheme,
- 19:26is it? Really? Thank you? Rader? At least your last
- 19:36earthly utterance was in the direction of good thank you, round tie blue shirts.
- 19:52What did he mean in silence? Well, it means that either the
- 19:56man for whom I sirch isn't a very fastidious dresser doctor or else or else
- 20:02or else, he's color blind. Blue and brown just aren't worn together.
- 20:08I'll take that drink now, doctor, and I mixed for you your concussion
- 20:14later, doctor, later, Well, I can see that you're going to
- 20:17be a very difficult patient. I hope you don't mind drinking out of another
- 20:21medicine clouds. No, right now, I prefer it a little more.
- 20:26Doctor. That's fine. That's such a beautiful color. Hasn't it done?
- 20:33Aren't you going to drink it in a moment? Doctor? When I finished
- 20:37my story, yes, of course his study Barbara's murder, wasn't it?
- 20:41Yes? Barbara was next. But immediately before our last meeting on deck and
- 20:45the fog, Doctor, I found out what she was afraid of. You
- 20:48did, But how it was easy. The steward had some keys, I
- 20:52had some money. The stewart has enough now for that chicken ranch he's always
- 20:56dreamed of. You broke into Barbela's faithful Yeah, well what did you find?
- 21:02Simon largery, perfume stockings, and some letters, doctor, peculiar letter,
- 21:10yes, yes, and all from the same fans. A fan she
- 21:14was once engaged married doctor, A fan who loved her very much and hated
- 21:18her in equal proportions, who was so torn between love and hate he had
- 21:25to kill her. So you should know what do you mean? Will you
- 21:30know the classifications? You're the doctor? Oh o, color blind? Schizophrenic.
- 21:37I don't believe I've ever met one before, doctor Norman, so color
- 21:41blind. He mistook the green and orange holloquin costume worn by Lil Miller for
- 21:45the blue and yellow one worn by Barbara. That is very interesting. Poor
- 21:49little if she'd come to the ball as anything but a harlequin, she'd have
- 21:52lived to take him fifty thousand dollars. You know you were wrong about Lil's
- 21:56hair. Doctor, wasn't read it with brown? You said it was rad
- 22:02I wanted to see if you degreed. You said it. Yeah. It's
- 22:04of course handed to me, would you, doctor, they're alongside to drink.
- 22:07No, no, don't try to tell them apart that there are romans,
- 22:10doctor Dobby, is that there are different colors? I'll catch you tell
- 22:17you'll find it saint like very much for you to drink it, my doctor,
- 22:22What a pretty purple gun you're wearing? Or is it pink drink of
- 22:26tipler? You hardly feel it's just a dash of Prussic acid and doctor Norman,
- 22:30when you give a sedative, you go overboard drink it. Tippler,
- 22:34Well you're the doctor. A toast to you, Doctor Norman, to your
- 22:40green shirt, blue tie, and gray handkerchief, none of which match.
- 22:45Here's how my eyes you threw it in my eyes with a question of your
- 22:52eyes or my stomach, doctor, in my eyes blind, you will get
- 22:56over a doctor, which is more than can be said of me. If
- 22:59one of those shots of your should hit me. I know I shouldn't practice
- 23:03medicine without a lifenase doctor, any more than you should. But here's an
- 23:07editive from me to you. Pleasant nightmare, Doctor Norman. You have been
- 23:29listening to another adventure of the Saints, the robin Hood of modern crime.
- 23:33Now Here is our star vincent price, Ladies and gentlemen. In a prejudice
- 23:37filled America, no one would be secure in his job, his business,
- 23:44his church, or his home. Yet racial and religious antagonisms are exploited daily
- 23:48by quacks and adventurers, whose followers make up the irresponsible, lunatic fringe of
- 23:55American life. Refuse to listen to our spread rumors against any race or religion
- 24:02helped to stamp out prejudice in our country. Let's judge our neighbors by the
- 24:07character of their lives alone, and not on the basis of their religion or
- 24:11origin. This is Vincent Price inviting you to join us again next week at
- 24:15the same time for another exciting adventure of the Saint. Good Night. The
- 24:49Light script of The Saint was written by Michael Kramoy. Our cast included Buddy
- 24:55lou Gerson, Jene Bates, Frank Gerstall, Bill Conrad, and Barney Phillips.
- 25:00The music was composed and conducted by Harry Zimmermann. The Saint, based
- 25:03on characters created by Leslie Charteris, is a James L. Saffier production and
- 25:08is directed by Thomas A. Mcavittie. Vincent Price is soon to be seen
- 25:12in Harry and Popkins production of Champagne for Caesar, co starring Ronald Coleman.
- 25:18All you Saints fans will be glad to know that the Saint comic books are
- 25:22unsaled all new stands. You're announcer, Merril Ronn. This is a mutual
- 25:33broadcasting system. Welcome back. I love this episode, just this one.
- 25:57It does certainly change up the format of The Saint with Vincent Price telling the
- 26:03story kind of opening up Immedia's race, but it works well here. It's
- 26:12a nice change of pace. It kind of reminds me of an episode of
- 26:17suspense, and certainly a different sort of role for William Conrad. William Conrad
- 26:22plays a lot of heavies, but never quite a one like this. So
- 26:29I found it enjoyable and just the way you can kind of see, you
- 26:33know, I think this is my second or third time listening through it.
- 26:37This the little clues that that were dropped as to what was going on,
- 26:42you kind of see that, you know, just very nicely done and all
- 26:48in the course of twenty five minutes, making a pretty remarkable and entertaining story.
- 26:53Also, you did hear the anti race as a message at the beginning
- 26:57of the show, which was something standard very strongly that Vincent Price failed about,
- 27:04and so you would those end messages at the end of The Saints would
- 27:10often be for that cause. The missing episodes of The Saint from the previous
- 27:15four weeks a political frame up, the baseball team shooting, death of a
- 27:21fighter, and retribution. I should also mention that, according to Digital la
- 27:26FTP, this title of this episode is actually the schizophrenic psychiatrist or a schizophrenic
- 27:34psychiatrist. I think that, you know, if that was the official working
- 27:41title, I understand that. But the reason I wouldn't announce that is just
- 27:45like Gangster District Attorney, it gives away the end. And unfortunately, good
- 27:52thing for this one is that they have something that doesn't exactly give it away,
- 27:57though you might have noticed early on, and so that's why I use
- 28:02that sort of alternate title on this one instead. Well, now we turn
- 28:06to iTunes reviews from just Josie. Listen to this app a lot at night
- 28:11when trying to relax. I enjoy the shows very much, I have to
