- 1:46Speaker 1: New Mexico. I'm going to have a telephone conversation with
- 1:49Speaker 1: guide extraordinaire Nick Streit of the Taos Fly Shop. I've
- 1:56Speaker 1: fished with him this summer and almost every summer. His dad, Taylor,
- 2:00Speaker 1: is a Hall of Famer in the fly fishing industry.
- 2:04Speaker 1: Nick is right there with him and excited to catch
- 2:07Speaker 1: up with him. We were with him back in July. Hopefully,
- 2:11Speaker 1: they've gotten a little rain up there since then because
- 2:15Speaker 1: it was horrible. Don't forget that tomorrow, Ryan and Caleb
- 2:22Speaker 1: are in. I'll be visiting with Tony Catalina and Kirk
- 2:26Speaker 1: Bowles as we do Every Friday, Monday, we will have
- 2:30Speaker 1: the Writers' Roundtable. Before we get into the outdoor portion
- 2:38Speaker 1: of our show, we want to hear from the new
- 2:42Speaker 1: Arkansas coach, Ryan Silverfield from Memphis. The Piggy people, of course,
- 2:53Speaker 1: in town Saturday for a 6 o'clock kickoff. Hogs are 2-2.
- 3:01Speaker 1: They're coming off a win over Tulsa, which is a
- 3:05Speaker 1: very perplexing team. But that's neither here nor there. Let's
- 3:10Speaker 1: hear from Ryan Silverfield a portion of his news conference
- 3:16Speaker 1: earlier this week.
- 3:19Speaker 6: Looking back on Saturday night, obviously, let me start by
- 3:22Speaker 6: saying what a tremendous atmosphere it was. So appreciative of
- 3:25Speaker 6: our fans that showed up. the students were great. People
- 3:29Speaker 6: sat through the rain, but just a terrific environment and
- 3:32Speaker 6: couldn't be more pleased with it. Obviously, the lights and
- 3:35Speaker 6: all the things that came along with it just made
- 3:37Speaker 6: it for a fun, fun evening.
- 3:39Speaker 7: Good, bad, and ugly from the game. Obviously, some growth.
- 3:43Speaker 6: I think we continue to show steady improvements every week.
- 3:47Speaker 6: But in all three phases, got to see some good stuff.
- 3:49Speaker 6: But things certainly, certainly they got to get fixed and
- 3:52Speaker 6: get corrected this week.
- 3:52Speaker 7: So pleased with that. Obviously, we know we have.
- 3:54Speaker 6: A tremendous challenge going on the road and playing at
- 3:57Speaker 6: Texas A & M. It's going to be a heck
- 3:59Speaker 6: of an environment there. Night game in the SEC is
- 4:03Speaker 6: always tough, but there's a reason they were the top
- 4:05Speaker 6: 10 in the country preseason. They're one of the most
- 4:09Speaker 6: talented teams that we'll see.
- 4:11Speaker 7: They got a lot of things.
- 4:12Speaker 6: Their head coach has done a tremendous job. They have
- 4:15Speaker 6: a three-year starting quarterback. They've got a defense that's first
- 4:18Speaker 6: seven takeaways.
- 4:19Speaker 7: So we're going to have to have a great week
- 4:20Speaker 7: of prep, but excited about the opportunity this Saturday.
- 4:26Speaker 3: Yeah, Coach, what does.
- 4:27Speaker 1: A win do for you guys in terms of momentum
- 4:30Speaker 1: and stuff?
- 4:33Speaker 6: Well, I think, you know, more than anything, the way
- 4:36Speaker 6: the two previous games occurred, it's like, like I said,
- 4:39Speaker 6: you know, even post-game Saturday, we got kicked in the teeth.
- 4:42Speaker 6: Those were tough ones. You never want to lose, and
- 4:44Speaker 6: those are hard. But like I said, we learned from those,
- 4:48Speaker 6: and no different than a win. You learn, you take
- 4:50Speaker 6: the rear view mirror, you throw it out the door,
- 4:51Speaker 6: and you keep progressing. And more than anything, it's for
- 4:55Speaker 6: me to the team, right? As we continue to try
- 4:57Speaker 6: these things that are unique, not only to some of
- 5:00Speaker 6: the guys that were part of last year's roster, guys
- 5:02Speaker 6: that are transferred in, people that have been a part
- 5:04Speaker 6: of this program for a.
- 5:05Speaker 7: Long time, right?
- 5:06Speaker 6: Hey, this is why we do morning practices. This is
- 5:09Speaker 6: why we do this film study. This is why we
- 5:11Speaker 6: eat the way we, this is why we train. So
- 5:14Speaker 6: more than anything, you just want it to be a
- 5:15Speaker 6: little bit of the fruits of the labor. Hey guys,
- 5:17Speaker 6: this is the reasoning, just trusting this process. And so
- 5:20Speaker 6: whether you win by one point or win by plenty,
- 5:23Speaker 6: it's just more people, okay, yeah, you know what? Even
- 5:26Speaker 6: when things were looking bleak and people were telling us
- 5:29Speaker 6: we stunk, you know, five days ago, we just stuck
- 5:33Speaker 6: with it.
- 5:34Speaker 7: We showed up. We went to class. We did all
- 5:35Speaker 7: the things you've asked us to do. We've been bought in.
- 5:38Speaker 6: Oh, it results in a win. Okay, now maybe I'll
- 5:41Speaker 6: show up five more minutes earlier, take care of my body,
- 5:43Speaker 6: do those things. So that's where I look at it.
- 5:45Speaker 6: You know, it's not necessarily motivation. Hey, we're still playing
- 5:49Speaker 6: for this.
- 5:49Speaker 7: Play for that. the guys show up every week, but
- 5:51Speaker 7: I think it just gives more some internal.
- 5:53Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 5:54Speaker 7: That's why we do it. That's why we've done these things.
- 5:57Speaker 9: I know you probably saw some good and some bad
- 5:58Speaker 9: on the offensive line.
- 5:59Speaker 4: I was wondering, I know that there was in game
- 6:02Speaker 4: a change at right tackle. Is there anything you.
- 6:04Speaker 1: Look at as far as shifting things around, having the
- 6:06Speaker 1: competition at that spot?
- 6:08Speaker 7: Yeah. You know, listen, I think in game, that was
- 6:12Speaker 7: the right decision to make at the right tackle spot.
- 6:14Speaker 6: And, you know, we got great faith that Brian's going
- 6:17Speaker 6: to continue to progress and, He's one of those guys that's,
- 6:20Speaker 6: you know, there's some good and some things that he
- 6:22Speaker 6: continues to do. Adam Hawks gave us a decent spell,
- 6:26Speaker 6: and there's some things he'd look back and say, I
- 6:28Speaker 6: got to get this done better.
- 6:30Speaker 7: As much as we can, we'd love.
- 6:31Speaker 6: To keep the five guys that originally started the season
- 6:34Speaker 6: offensive line as the core group. Because, like you said,
- 6:37Speaker 6: there were some positives, some steps in the right direction.
- 6:40Speaker 6: It's certainly not perfect by any stretch of the imagination. So,
- 6:43Speaker 6: like we tell them every week, and we told the
- 6:45Speaker 6: offensive line, like, guys, we've The five guys that started
- 6:48Speaker 6: last game, the plan is to start them, but, man,
- 6:50Speaker 6: there's got to be some competition. We've got to find
- 6:52Speaker 6: ways to continue to improve.
- 6:54Speaker 7: I have a question for you about the green dot.
- 6:57Speaker 9: Knowing that Shaw was not going to be in the game,
- 6:59Speaker 9: who had it, and can you rig up multiple helmets
- 7:02Speaker 9: to switch it off.
- 7:03Speaker 7: During the game? So you can. You can rig up
- 7:05Speaker 7: multiple helmets. I'll start with that question, but it's got
- 7:07Speaker 7: to be announced.
- 7:08Speaker 6: We played some teams that have gone out there, even Utah,
- 7:11Speaker 6: with multiple quarterbacks.
- 7:12Speaker 7: You're like, hey, did they have two green dots? In fact,
- 7:14Speaker 7: North Alabama got called. or a penalty the game before
- 7:18Speaker 7: us for having two green dots on the field.
- 7:19Speaker 6: So it's something you gotta be careful. You also gotta
- 7:21Speaker 6: think about special teams, right? Uh, this guy was, you know,
- 7:24Speaker 6: Ben Bogle wasn't a starter and linebacker, but all of
- 7:26Speaker 6: a sudden started. Well, and he was out there on
- 7:28Speaker 6: a special teams unit and then someone.
- 7:30Speaker 7: Else had it. You just gotta be careful with those things.
- 7:32Speaker 8: Right.
- 7:33Speaker 6: Um, But I think Ben, you know, we continue to probably,
- 7:37Speaker 6: depending on the starter, if Bradley Shaw's back, we'll have
- 7:40Speaker 6: the green dot. Maybe Ben Bogle will this week. Maybe
- 7:42Speaker 6: we give it to Quay. But yes, you have the ability.
- 7:45Speaker 7: To rotate helmets as long as there's one on the field.
- 7:48Speaker 6: There's some teams I've seen that have had it on
- 7:49Speaker 6: a linebacker and then change it up middle of the
- 7:52Speaker 6: game and put it on safety. But yeah, we take,
- 7:55Speaker 6: I'd say, a time without overshooting it, probably six different helmets.
- 7:58Speaker 7: For the guys that have the possibility of doing it.
- 8:00Speaker 6: And more than anything, a lot of it, right, It's
- 8:02Speaker 6: a different way to communicate. Obviously, sometimes we've got three
- 8:06Speaker 6: guys singling and none of them are even live. The
- 8:09Speaker 6: green dot's giving out the communication.
- 8:10Speaker 7: So Bobo had it?
- 8:12Speaker 8: Yes. Okay.
- 8:13Speaker 7: And how do you think he did.
- 8:14Speaker 9: At stepping into that role? I know we asked you
- 8:17Speaker 9: to post him, but why him.
- 8:19Speaker 7: And how he did in that role? I think he
- 8:21Speaker 7: did a fantastic job.
- 8:23Speaker 6: I think you got to see the communication in-game, right,
- 8:25Speaker 6: with him getting guys lined up, with him getting guys
- 8:28Speaker 6: on the same page. He is a fifth-year guy that's
- 8:32Speaker 6: shown leadership and shown the ability to go out there
- 8:34Speaker 6: and make some plays. You talk about the opening play
- 8:38Speaker 6: of the game, the rush and getting the sack. I
- 8:40Speaker 6: think that ability and the way he's been playing at
- 8:43Speaker 6: a high level allow him the ability to continue to
- 8:45Speaker 6: get more reps. I didn't know, even in August, how
- 8:47Speaker 6: much is this guy going to play for us? Obviously,
- 8:50Speaker 6: you don't want injuries to occur, but we need the
- 8:51Speaker 6: next man up, and he's certainly proven that he's capable
- 8:54Speaker 6: of doing so.
- 8:55Speaker 9: Your red zone offense, Tulsa just came at you. I
- 9:00Speaker 9: wonder what are the countermeasures and what do you feel
- 9:03Speaker 9: like we need to do to be more effective?
- 9:06Speaker 7: Yeah, certainly. Like we discussed post-game, we did have some
- 9:10Speaker 7: red zone struggles.
- 9:11Speaker 6: You'd like to get down there, but obviously, ultimately, rather
- 9:14Speaker 6: than going four for four on field goals, you'd like
- 9:15Speaker 6: to maybe kick a couple and then maybe the rest
- 9:18Speaker 6: of them you come away with sixes.
- 9:20Speaker 7: I think part of that is finding different ways to
- 9:22Speaker 7: do it.
- 9:23Speaker 6: It was unique. We talked about going into the game
- 9:25Speaker 6: even last Monday with Tulsa being a I think 4%
- 9:31Speaker 6: pressure team on base downs, and they must have pressured us,
- 9:35Speaker 6: excuse me for being incorrect, over 50% of the time
- 9:38Speaker 6: on base downs. And we saw more of that in
- 9:40Speaker 6: the red zone than they've ever shown. They showed three
- 9:42Speaker 6: straight corner blitzes versus Oklahoma State on back-to-back-to-back plays in
- 9:47Speaker 6: the red zone.
- 9:47Speaker 7: That was the only red zone pressure they have shown.
- 9:50Speaker 6: And so you're looking at that now all of a
- 9:53Speaker 6: sudden it's a different deal. So again, putting our guys
- 9:56Speaker 6: in the best situation, that's on us. There's a couple
- 9:58Speaker 6: play calls that Coach Graves and I talked about that
- 10:00Speaker 6: maybe we could have had back and that's always going
- 10:02Speaker 6: to be the case. And then, you know, finding out
- 10:05Speaker 6: again if we can line up and run the ball
- 10:07Speaker 6: effectively down there.
- 10:09Speaker 7: That's got to be a huge force.
- 10:10Speaker 6: And then, you know, there are a couple of things,
- 10:11Speaker 6: obviously one of the red zone deficiencies was, you know,
- 10:14Speaker 6: the hurry up at the end of the half, you know,
- 10:16Speaker 6: making sure the communication piece, all those things go hand
- 10:18Speaker 6: in hand, but we'll continue to look for answers like
- 10:20Speaker 6: we have in every phase of our game.
- 10:24Speaker 1: Now that it's no secret of what all Chris Marshall
- 10:26Speaker 1: can do, just what, how does the offense have to
- 10:28Speaker 1: adjust to whatever in the passing game to whatever defense
- 10:31Speaker 1: is might be going out?
- 10:32Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 10:32Speaker 6: Andrew, like I said, post game, you know, I, Teams
- 10:34Speaker 6: are going to start rolling some coverages and doing some
- 10:37Speaker 6: different things. I think that's part of what you're going
- 10:40Speaker 6: to start seeing is our team is going to try
- 10:42Speaker 6: to put their best corner on, play man-to-man. Are they
- 10:44Speaker 6: going to start rolling things that way? We'll see to
- 10:49Speaker 6: be determined, but we've got to be great with it.
- 10:52Speaker 6: We need other guys to step up. We've got great
- 10:55Speaker 6: faith in all the other wide receivers. We need the
- 10:56Speaker 6: tight ends to continue to do things to solve problems.
- 10:58Speaker 6: you know, the previous game, Todd Lockwood did some really
- 11:01Speaker 6: good things. This game, Leon Platt did some good things,
- 11:04Speaker 6: but we need a variety of different guys. We threw
- 11:06Speaker 6: some checkdowns. We got to continue to find the running back.
- 11:08Speaker 6: So find different answers than that. We know how special
- 11:10Speaker 6: Chris is.
- 11:11Speaker 7: And guess what?
- 11:12Speaker 6: Even if he is role coverage to them or their
- 11:14Speaker 6: best corner, we need to go out there and make plays.
- 11:17Speaker 1: Ryan Silverfield, Arkansas coach, talking a little bit about Chris Marshall,
- 11:21Speaker 1: the wide receiver who leads the SEC in receiving of,
- 11:27Speaker 1: former Texas A & M player, whom they could use
- 11:32Speaker 1: right now. With Bussey out, Ashton Bethel-Roman nicked up and
- 11:38Speaker 1: listed as questionable. Mario Craver for Saturday's game. Yeah, you
- 11:47Speaker 1: can never have enough running backs. You can never have
- 11:49Speaker 1: enough wide receivers. But as Mike Elko was saying earlier
- 11:54Speaker 1: in the week, Man, with the transfer portal, depth is
- 11:57Speaker 1: hard because the good guys that you would have as depth,
- 12:01Speaker 1: they're taking money to play other places. Okay. Let's do this.
- 12:09Speaker 8: Can we?
- 12:10Speaker 1: A feeding frenzy unfolded frighteningly close. I don't know who
- 12:16Speaker 1: wrote this. A feeding frenzy unfolded frighteningly close. See, I
- 12:21Speaker 1: can't do it, and I'm a professional. Western Australia.
- 12:24Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 12:24Speaker 1: This week, multiple sharks, including an estimated 16 to 17
- 12:30Speaker 1: foot great white, cruise through the shallows because there was
- 12:34Speaker 1: a whale carcass while hundreds of spectators stood on the
- 12:39Speaker 1: beach and watched. The carcass washed ashore at City Beach
- 12:45Speaker 1: in Perth early Monday morning after surf lifesavers, surf life,
- 12:52Speaker 1: I love lifesavers, discovered it. Around 7.30, within roughly an hour,
- 12:57Speaker 1: SharkSmart had recorded two whites measuring up to 16 feet,
- 13:05Speaker 1: just about 30 feet offshore. That's close. A three and
- 13:10Speaker 1: a half meter shark, 10 feet, of unknown species, another
- 13:15Speaker 1: measuring two and a half feet, seven feet. Meanwhile, photographer
- 13:21Speaker 1: Tom Cavanaugh captured dramatic drone footage showing the sharks moving
- 13:25Speaker 1: through shallow water. With spectators gathered nearby, Cavanaugh said the
- 13:30Speaker 1: animals were following the scent of the whale and were
- 13:33Speaker 1: coming in very close, riding the shallows. Beachgoer Lydia Moss
- 13:39Speaker 1: saw the sharks firsthand. They're bigger than I thought they
- 13:43Speaker 1: were going to be, she said, describing them as Massive
- 13:47Speaker 1: authorities closed the beach and surrounding stretches of the coastline.
- 13:52Speaker 1: Cambridge Mayor Gary Mack issued a unequivocal warning. People should
- 13:57Speaker 1: not swim in this area at all. And dogs should
- 14:03Speaker 1: stay out of the water. The dead whale carcass, of course,
- 14:08Speaker 1: an all-you-can-eat buffet for sharks. UWA Oceans Institute researchers Ben
- 14:14Speaker 1: D'Antonio called a dead whale basically a pot of gold
- 14:18Speaker 1: for a shark, explaining that the lipid-rich meal can attract
- 14:24Speaker 1: animals from surrounding ocean. Shark expert Cullen Brown warned that
- 14:29Speaker 1: scent from the decomposing whale could linger through several tides
- 14:34Speaker 1: even after the carcass is removed. The timing is especially unsettling.
- 14:41Speaker 1: Just 10 days earlier, 63-year-old Greg O'Neill was killed by
- 14:45Speaker 1: a great white while swimming close to shore at Sorrento Beach,
- 14:50Speaker 1: roughly 15 kilometers north. 10 miles, give or take. Authorities
- 14:57Speaker 1: issued a rare catch and kill order after that fatal
- 15:01Speaker 1: shark attack. Ooh, they wouldn't do that in Florida. Authorities
- 15:05Speaker 1: since deployed drumlines to tag sharks gathering around the carcass
- 15:10Speaker 1: while beaches remained closed. Meanwhile, a paddle boarding excursion in
- 15:18Speaker 1: the Pacific off California turned terrifying for one woman when
- 15:24Speaker 1: a sea lion yanked her into the water. Heather Gray
- 15:30Speaker 1: told KNTV, I was like, what's happening? It was like
- 15:34Speaker 1: a horror movie. She was paddleboarding between Capitol Wharf and
- 15:39Speaker 1: Privates Beach near Pleasure Point in California when the marine
- 15:42Speaker 1: mammal attacked about 8 a.m.
- 15:45Speaker 8: Tuesday.
- 15:47Speaker 1: This is in Northern California, by the way. San Jose
- 15:51Speaker 1: to Oakland. The sea lion bit her harm hand. and feet.
- 15:56Speaker 1: The thing was the most bizarre that it grabbed my hair,
- 16:00Speaker 1: she said. After she got back on her board, she
- 16:03Speaker 1: paddled on shore, but the lion followed her. A friend
- 16:06Speaker 1: drove her to an urgent care facility for treatment. A
- 16:10Speaker 1: second reported attack involved a surfer near Santa Cruz. You know,
- 16:16Speaker 1: these sea lions, people think they're so cute. They're so furry.
- 16:23Speaker 1: Sea lions and fur seals in Monterey Bay have been
- 16:26Speaker 1: hit hard by domoic acid poisoning, according to the Marine
- 16:32Speaker 1: Mammal Center. These people always have to make excuses for
- 16:36Speaker 1: wild animal behavior that attack humans. Domoic acid poisoning is
- 16:41Speaker 1: caused by harmful algae blooms. The neurotoxin accumulates in small
- 16:47Speaker 1: fish that are eaten by marine animals, including the seals.
- 16:51Speaker 1: Wildlife and domainic acid poisoning can act unpredictably. Encourage people
- 16:57Speaker 1: to stay 150 feet away from the animals. Well, I
- 17:01Speaker 1: would personally stay farther away than that. You know what
- 17:07Speaker 1: I'm saying? Like I said, we always have to make
- 17:13Speaker 1: excuses for animals who attack people. Animals are always on
- 17:19Speaker 1: the the lookout for people. What do we say every week?
- 17:26Speaker 1: Get them before they get you. They are after you.
- 17:33Speaker 1: They hate you. They want to kill you. They are wild,
- 17:40Speaker 1: dangerous animals. Even those furry, cute little seals. You know
- 17:47Speaker 1: what I'm saying? They have really large teeth. Our animals
- 17:53Speaker 1: attack segment, we're not finished, is brought to you each
- 17:58Speaker 1: week by Schulte Roofing Home of the Bulletproof Roof Guarantee.
- 18:03Speaker 10: It was after a hailstorm a few years back. I
- 18:05Speaker 10: needed a new roof. Yeah, I shopped around, and then
- 18:08Speaker 10: I found Schulte Roofing, and boy, I'm glad I did.
- 18:10Speaker 10: The folks at Schulte guided me every step of the way.
- 18:13Speaker 10: They showed me my options. They told me what my
- 18:16Speaker 10: out-of-pocket cost would be after insurance. They took the complication
- 18:19Speaker 10: out of an otherwise very stressful situation. They took off
- 18:22Speaker 10: the damaged roof, put on the new roof, did all
- 18:24Speaker 10: the cleanup, and I had my new roof in one day.
- 18:27Speaker 9: Schulte Roofing, the home of the bulletproof roofing.
- 18:34Speaker 1: It is the Clark Eisenhower Outdoor Edition for a Thursday.
- 18:40Speaker 1: And let it rain. All right. We've been dry. And
- 18:51Speaker 1: coming up here in 20 minutes or so or less,
- 18:57Speaker 1: I'm going to be visiting with Nick Stripe from the
- 18:59Speaker 1: Taos Fly Shop in Taos, New Mexico. I think they
- 19:05Speaker 1: have gotten some rain. I've been watching because it was
- 19:08Speaker 1: so dry up there. The remnants of this hurricane went
- 19:13Speaker 1: up there first. We're getting a little of it now.
- 19:19Speaker 1: A woman was bitten by a possibly rabid coyote on
- 19:24Speaker 1: a hiking trail in Westchester County yesterday. and officials are
- 19:32Speaker 1: urging residents to be on the lookout and stay vigilant.
- 19:38Speaker 1: This is New York, of course. Westchester County is one
- 19:41Speaker 1: of the richest counties in America. The attack unfolded along
- 19:49Speaker 1: the Old Croton Aqueduct Path near Warburton Avenue, a heavily
- 19:55Speaker 1: wooded strip inside the Aqueduct State Historic Park. Anyone who
- 20:01Speaker 1: sees the coyote should not approach the animal, but contact
- 20:04Speaker 1: the police immediately, says Health Commissioner Dr. Sherlita Amler. Remember
- 20:11Speaker 1: when our former governor shot a coyote during one of
- 20:15Speaker 1: his runs in Austin? Well, you do that in Houston,
- 20:20Speaker 1: even if you're the governor. Well, not the governor. The
- 20:22Speaker 1: politicians would be protected. But if you did that in
- 20:24Speaker 1: New York, you actually.
- 20:28Speaker 8: Even.
- 20:29Speaker 1: pretended to shoot a coyote, you know, make that little
- 20:32Speaker 1: pistol sign with your fingers, you'd probably spend like four
- 20:38Speaker 1: years in prison. She says, make loud noises and slowly
- 20:43Speaker 1: back away. Due to its aggressive behavior, the coyote may
- 20:48Speaker 1: be rabid. Residents should closely supervise children and pets when outside.
- 20:54Speaker 1: The victim undergoing emergency preventive rabies treatment, they said in
- 20:58Speaker 1: a statement, and that's painful. Cops in Hastings and Dobbs
- 21:03Speaker 1: Ferry along the Greenberg Animal Control officers and the New
- 21:07Speaker 1: York State Department of Environmental Conservation Police are scouring the area.
- 21:14Speaker 1: Rabbit animals often show erratic and dangerous behavior. including a
- 21:20Speaker 1: sudden lack of fear of humans, unprovoked aggression, or extreme lethargy.
- 21:27Speaker 1: Which is it? Extreme lethargy or unprovoked aggression? Staggering and
- 21:34Speaker 1: foaming at the mouth are classic warning signs. I'm just
- 21:39Speaker 1: giving you these helpful hints. Westchester residents who spot stray
- 21:44Speaker 1: or wild animals acting strangely urged to report it immediately.
- 21:50Speaker 1: All animal bites or contacts with animals suspected of rabies
- 21:56Speaker 1: can be reported 24 hours a day. Rabies vaccinations for dogs, cats, ferrets.
- 22:04Speaker 1: Do you really need? Never mind. With regular booster shots
- 22:08Speaker 1: required by state law. Oh, and I'm sure everyone in
- 22:13Speaker 1: the New York City area has their animals vaccinated. Earlier
- 22:18Speaker 1: this month, officials warned a rabid fox may have been
- 22:22Speaker 1: roaming Staten Island. Troubling city data revealed that rabid raccoons
- 22:29Speaker 1: invading the city's outer boroughs have led to 20 total
- 22:34Speaker 1: rabies cases, 57% more than last year. By late August,
- 22:42Speaker 1: The Big Apple had recorded five cases in Brooklyn, six
- 22:46Speaker 1: in Queens, nine at Staten Island, matching the total of
- 22:51Speaker 1: all of last year. You know, there's a movie that
- 22:55Speaker 1: could be made from this. I mean, you know what
- 23:00Speaker 1: I'm saying? And whatever happened to Sharknado? Man, I miss
- 23:07Speaker 1: me some Sharknado. I just, I hope. Somebody is working
- 23:14Speaker 1: on a script. And we know from past Sharknadoes, it
- 23:17Speaker 1: doesn't have to be a great script. But I sure
- 23:22Speaker 1: miss me some Sharknado. I mean, what is better than
- 23:29Speaker 1: murderous huge sharks flying through the air, propelled by hurricanes
- 23:35Speaker 1: and tornadoes, biting people in half? Just don't get better
- 23:41Speaker 1: than that. A fearless Washington state boy, 12-year-old Robin Westgate,
- 23:48Speaker 1: fought off a monstrous mama black bear by gouging its
- 23:54Speaker 1: eyes during a terrifying attack that left him battered and bruised.
- 24:03Speaker 1: This is in upstate Washington, the People's Republic of Washington.
- 24:09Speaker 1: Robin Westgate said while he was retrieving a bowl from
- 24:12Speaker 1: his backyard fruit orchard Sunday night, he came face to
- 24:17Speaker 1: face with an enraged black bear protecting her cub. The
- 24:23Speaker 1: Bellingham youngster said he and the bear startled each other
- 24:27Speaker 1: before the beast charged him twice, left puncture wounds on
- 24:31Speaker 1: his hip, Westgate said it was fight or die. I
- 24:37Speaker 1: didn't really have an option. The bear bit into my
- 24:39Speaker 1: wrist and I slammed my hand and thumb into her eye.
- 24:44Speaker 1: Black bears are common in the neighborhood, which is near
- 24:46Speaker 1: the Canadian border. The twain had already been taught what
- 24:51Speaker 1: to do. The mama bear charged a second time toward
- 24:59Speaker 1: his father, Noah. Strange as it sounds, the father said,
- 25:04Speaker 1: it was a feeling of relief to have her coming
- 25:07Speaker 1: at me. Noah Westgate jumped into his self-described code red
- 25:13Speaker 1: mode to protect his son the same way the bear
- 25:17Speaker 1: was protecting her cub, by clobbering it. She crushes into
- 25:23Speaker 1: crunches into my right hand at the moment, and I
- 25:26Speaker 1: laid the hardest punch of my life. The dad's right
- 25:30Speaker 1: hook scared the bear away. Although Robin Westgate said the
- 25:36Speaker 1: encounter was terrifying, it doesn't change anything about the overall
- 25:41Speaker 1: danger from bears. The only thing that's changed is now
- 25:46Speaker 1: I know I can trust myself. Things could have been worse,
- 25:51Speaker 1: said the family, if their daughter, Riverly, That's a good
- 25:57Speaker 1: Washington name. Didn't hear her brother's cries for help. I'm
- 26:02Speaker 1: glad I was outside and heard him and that the
- 26:04Speaker 1: injuries weren't worse, she said. The mama bear has since
- 26:08Speaker 1: returned to the area and wildlife workers snapped a photo. Oh,
- 26:14Speaker 1: that's good.
- 26:15Speaker 8: That's good.
- 26:15Speaker 1: Take a picture of it. A trap has been set. Oh, beautiful.
- 26:23Speaker 1: From now on, the Westgate family says they will carry
- 26:26Speaker 1: bear spray into their backyard. Wildlife officials say attacks in
- 26:31Speaker 1: Washington state average less than one per year.
- 26:35Speaker 8: Hmm.
- 26:39Speaker 1: I'm a proud papa that my 12-year-old son stood his
- 26:42Speaker 1: ground against that black bear, said Noah, and we are too.
- 26:45Speaker 1: And again, this is the People's Republic of Washington, so
- 26:50Speaker 1: there's no guns available. Even if you had one stored
- 26:58Speaker 1: legally and pulled it out to shoot the bear, oh, baby,
- 27:03Speaker 1: you'd just as soon the bear kill you because you're
- 27:06Speaker 1: going to spend time in prison in the People's Republic
- 27:11Speaker 1: of Washington. God help you if you killed a black
- 27:16Speaker 1: bear that was attacking your son because we all know
- 27:20Speaker 1: the bears are much more valuable than people. And we
- 27:24Speaker 1: all know that guns are evil, especially in the state
- 27:28Speaker 1: of Washington. You know, next door in Oregon, they're holding
- 27:32Speaker 1: a referendum not to be able to shoot any wild
- 27:35Speaker 1: animals at all, to outlaw hunting. You think I'm kidding.
- 27:40Speaker 1: I'm not kidding. And if you think there are no
- 27:45Speaker 1: people within sound of my voice right now that approve
- 27:48Speaker 1: of that, you're fooling yourself. There are plenty of people
- 27:58Speaker 1: within the sound of my voice saying, well, what's wrong
- 28:01Speaker 1: with banning hunting? It's a despicable way to harm animals.
- 28:09Speaker 1: Get them before they get you. Oh, the animals, not
- 28:15Speaker 1: the people. A couple's beloved French bulldog died saving its owners.
- 28:24Speaker 1: As a bear attacked them in the backyard of their
- 28:27Speaker 1: rural North Carolina home. Now, I'm going to think the
- 28:33Speaker 1: people of California are going to do something about this.
- 28:36Speaker 1: Not because a person died in the bear attack, but
- 28:38Speaker 1: because a dog died. Jeff and Mallory Wilson were in
- 28:41Speaker 1: their home in Trinity County Saturday when their dog Cassie barked.
- 28:46Speaker 1: The late night disturbance prompted Jeff to go outside and
- 28:49Speaker 1: check the backyard. As soon as he opened the door,
- 28:51Speaker 1: Cassie stepped off the deck and a cinnamon brown bear
- 28:55Speaker 1: emerged from behind the patio furniture and attacked and knocked
- 28:59Speaker 1: Jeff to the floor. Mallory woke up to the loud noises,
- 29:04Speaker 1: went outside to check. The bear attacked her, leaving her
- 29:07Speaker 1: with grave injuries to her face and body. At some point,
- 29:12Speaker 1: the bear grabbed Cassie with its mouth and started to
- 29:15Speaker 1: run away. Mallory threw a chair at the bear, causing
- 29:19Speaker 1: it to drop Cassie. Jeff shoved a patio heater into
- 29:23Speaker 1: the bear, and it finally ran off. The couple believes
- 29:27Speaker 1: the bear panicked after getting cornered between the house's small
- 29:31Speaker 1: fence and the open gate. I think the bear was
- 29:34Speaker 1: startled by us as much as we were startled by it,
- 29:37Speaker 1: said Jeff. The couple rushed Cassie into emergency surgery. Now
- 29:43Speaker 1: let's not be confused. Cassie is the dog, not the wife.
- 29:47Speaker 1: The couple rushed Cassie into emergency surgery to treat multiple
- 29:51Speaker 1: bite wounds and deep cuts. When she started walking and
- 29:56Speaker 1: drinking water on her own two days later, They had
- 29:59Speaker 1: a hope for her recovery, but tragically, Cassie died. According
- 30:07Speaker 1: to GoFundMe page set up by the couple's friend, Rachel Moscone,
- 30:13Speaker 1: Jeff suffered two broken ribs and numerous bite and claw wounds.
- 30:18Speaker 1: Mallory had serious, we're talking about the dog now, okay?
- 30:23Speaker 1: Now we can talk about the people. Jeff had serious injuries.
- 30:28Speaker 1: Mallory had injuries to her head and face, a broken hand,
- 30:33Speaker 1: and bite and puncture wounds. We're talking about practice. Cassie
- 30:40Speaker 1: threw herself between Jeff and the bear in an effort
- 30:42Speaker 1: to protect him. Seven-and-a-half-year-old Bulldog was a beloved member of
- 30:47Speaker 1: the family. The little dog courageously put herself between him
- 30:52Speaker 1: and a bear. And again, this is California. There's no guns.
- 30:57Speaker 1: She was never meant to be a hero. She was
- 30:59Speaker 1: not our guard dog. She was just our sweet indoor
- 31:02Speaker 1: lap baby, said Mallory, who was, I guess, well enough
- 31:06Speaker 1: to talk about her dog. The couple said this was
- 31:14Speaker 1: an unprovoked and extraordinarily unusual encounter that none of us
- 31:18Speaker 1: could have anticipated. We're devastated by what happened while still,
- 31:23Speaker 1: listen to me, respecting the wild animals that belong in
- 31:27Speaker 1: these places. These are Californians, people. There is nothing we
- 31:31Speaker 1: can do to change their mind. They're on the left
- 31:36Speaker 1: coast where animals are valued more than people. Get them
- 31:44Speaker 1: before they get you. Hey, I want to tell you

- 36:14Speaker 15: Polaris Fun Center phone line and visit with the owner
- 36:18Speaker 15: and proprietor of the Taos Fly Shop in Taos, New Mexico.
- 36:22Speaker 1: He is Nick Streit. Nick and I fished. in July
- 36:26Speaker 1: together as we try to do most Julys, and man,
- 36:30Speaker 1: it was dry. The only real water was in the
- 36:34Speaker 1: Rio Grande, which is where we fish, Nick, but you've
- 36:37Speaker 1: told me since then you've gotten a little rain.
- 36:41Speaker 8: We've gotten a lot of rain. I mean, I'm sitting
- 36:43Speaker 8: at my house looking out at this creek I got
- 36:45Speaker 8: in my backyard that was dang near dried up a
- 36:49Speaker 8: week ago, and we've had two big storms. We've had
- 36:52Speaker 8: like As much as six or seven inches of rain
- 36:56Speaker 8: in parts of the state right here in northern New
- 36:57Speaker 8: Mexico we've had in the last 10 days, I'd say
- 37:00Speaker 8: four to five inches of rain, which is a lot
- 37:04Speaker 8: for us. And it's come at a nice pace. It
- 37:06Speaker 8: hasn't caused any flooding or anything. The rivers are up
- 37:09Speaker 8: and muddy right now. But, you know, they're going to
- 37:11Speaker 8: come down here soon, and I'm expecting the rest of
- 37:13Speaker 8: the fall to fish really good. And this moisture was
- 37:15Speaker 8: exactly what we needed.
- 37:16Speaker 1: So it will also cool things down as well and
- 37:21Speaker 1: probably get a little better flow in the places where
- 37:24Speaker 1: you fish, right?
- 37:26Speaker 8: Yeah. I mean, you know, it's definitely fall here. The
- 37:28Speaker 8: trees are changing. They're all yellow. And we got out
- 37:30Speaker 8: of this storm, we got what looks like about a
- 37:32Speaker 8: foot of snow up in the high country. Oh, nice. Yeah. Yeah.
- 37:36Speaker 8: It's a far cry from the... you know, the conditions
- 37:39Speaker 8: that we had when you guys.
- 37:41Speaker 1: You know, the whole state was on fire and then
- 37:45Speaker 1: we went to Colorado and it was probably worse than
- 37:48Speaker 1: it was in New Mexico, Nick. I mean, it was just,
- 37:50Speaker 1: you know, all over that area was just brutal.
- 37:54Speaker 8: Yeah. You know, it was a tough season for, for
- 37:56Speaker 8: us all in the Southern Rockies. Um, it was dry, basically,
- 38:00Speaker 8: you know, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, um, even North
- 38:05Speaker 8: of there wasn't great. Um, But we took it, you know,
- 38:08Speaker 8: it was tough. I don't know any other way to
- 38:11Speaker 8: say it. It was about the toughest season I've had
- 38:13Speaker 8: down here.
- 38:14Speaker 1: Do you lose fish if the water gets too warm?
- 38:18Speaker 1: Did it get too warm? I know that in Colorado
- 38:21Speaker 1: we quit fishing at noon, and we started early when
- 38:24Speaker 1: I was with you just because of that very thing.
- 38:27Speaker 1: You know, it was just really hot and dry, and
- 38:30Speaker 1: the water temperature just goes up.
- 38:33Speaker 8: Yeah, you know, we had water temps in the Rio
- 38:36Speaker 8: consistently above 70 degrees for months, which, you know, trout
- 38:42Speaker 8: can survive in it. But if you catch them and
- 38:45Speaker 8: you try to release them and you stress them out,
- 38:47Speaker 8: they tend not to make it. we had, we've had
- 38:50Speaker 8: a couple of guy trips down there in the last
- 38:52Speaker 8: week or so, and they've done really well. So it
- 38:55Speaker 8: seems that all of the fish fared, um, no problem.
- 38:58Speaker 8: In fact, they're fat and healthy. So, you know, I
- 39:01Speaker 8: think we dodged a bullet on the river, at least
- 39:03Speaker 8: on the, on the Rio. Yeah. Uh, the smaller Creek,
- 39:06Speaker 8: some of them, I mean, some of them got pretty
- 39:08Speaker 8: close to dry, if not dried up. And so I'm
- 39:11Speaker 8: sure we lost some fish and some Creeks. Um, it's
- 39:15Speaker 8: amazing how fast they'll come back. You know, now we're
- 39:17Speaker 8: in this wetter cycle and this big super El Nino's
- 39:20Speaker 8: headed our way. So I'm, I'm, you know, I'm optimistic
- 39:23Speaker 8: about next season. But yeah, I mean, I think we
- 39:27Speaker 8: probably lost some fish in some of the small little
- 39:29Speaker 8: tiny creeks for sure.
- 39:30Speaker 1: You need a really good winter, don't you, to fill
- 39:33Speaker 1: up some of these reservoirs especially.
- 39:36Speaker 8: We do. We do. I mean, this rain that we're
- 39:38Speaker 8: getting is a great start. Like I say, the amount
- 39:41Speaker 8: of rain that we got, I've never seen a rainstorm
- 39:43Speaker 8: or a period of rain in a week like we've
- 39:45Speaker 8: just had. I mean, this has really been something. So,
- 39:48Speaker 8: great start going into the fall. You know, if we
- 39:51Speaker 8: can just get a winter that's like quote-unquote average, if
- 39:54Speaker 8: that exists anymore, we'd be looking great for next year. So, yeah,
- 40:00Speaker 8: but all the forecasts look good. So, you know, fingers
- 40:03Speaker 8: crossed it's going to be a good season next year.
- 40:05Speaker 1: How is the Costilla right now?
- 40:08Speaker 8: Costilla, you know, they didn't have any, as you know,
- 40:11Speaker 8: they weren't letting any water out of the dam. No,
- 40:12Speaker 8: they were not. They just let a little water out
- 40:17Speaker 8: with all the rain. The water levels are good. We
- 40:20Speaker 8: haven't been fishing it much. The last report I got
- 40:22Speaker 8: up there was not great. So, you know, that'll be
- 40:26Speaker 8: one where we just, you know, time will tell to
- 40:28Speaker 8: see how the fish fare through the low water. I mean,
- 40:31Speaker 8: it's high enough elevation. I don't know that water temp's
- 40:34Speaker 8: would have gotten so drastic to kill fish. But the
- 40:36Speaker 8: low water, it does hurt bug life and fish. It
- 40:40Speaker 8: makes it hard for them, that's for sure.
- 40:42Speaker 1: So we'll see.
- 40:43Speaker 8: I'm optimistic that next season they'll bounce back. And the state,
- 40:47Speaker 8: that's part of that Rio Grande cutthroat restoration project, and
- 40:50Speaker 8: the state's done a good job of stocking fingerlings up there.
- 40:53Speaker 8: So it'll bounce back fast.
- 40:55Speaker 1: You helped do that, as a matter of fact, a
- 40:58Speaker 1: few years ago, did you not?
- 41:00Speaker 8: Well, we played a pretty small part in it. Me
- 41:03Speaker 8: and some of the shop crew went up to literally
- 41:07Speaker 8: pack some of those little kind of cut boats back
- 41:10Speaker 8: into the tributaries up there. That was super fun, yeah.
- 41:15Speaker 1: What are the main areas right now that your people
- 41:18Speaker 1: are fishing?
- 41:20Speaker 8: Well, you know, this is coming into our fall season,
- 41:24Speaker 8: which is always all about the Rio Grande. Mm-hmm. You know,
- 41:28Speaker 8: with the exception of this probably week where the river
- 41:31Speaker 8: is going to be muddy, I mean, the fishing was
- 41:33Speaker 8: fantastic a week ago before the river got muddy. I
- 41:35Speaker 8: think it's going to be right back there. And this
- 41:39Speaker 8: cool off will help, right? Absolutely.
- 41:41Speaker 1: It's going to cool.
- 41:41Speaker 8: Water temps, and it's going to push a lot of
- 41:43Speaker 8: the weed growth that happened in the summer out, making
- 41:46Speaker 8: it easier to fish. The river is going to get
- 41:48Speaker 8: nice and clear. So we're going to be hitting the Rio.
- 41:50Speaker 8: We're going to be hitting the Red, you know, a
- 41:52Speaker 8: little bit of fishing on the Conejos for the next
- 41:54Speaker 8: couple weeks. But the Rio is going to be our
- 41:56Speaker 8: main focus.
- 41:57Speaker 1: Ed, what primarily are you using, Nick, when you go
- 42:03Speaker 1: on the Rio? What's working?
- 42:06Speaker 8: My go-to this time of year, it does depend a
- 42:08Speaker 8: little bit on water, you know, visibility, water height. If
- 42:13Speaker 8: the river is flowing over about 100 CFS, and that's
- 42:16Speaker 8: up in the upper part of the canyon up by Cuesta,
- 42:19Speaker 8: I'll tend to go with maybe an indicator and a
- 42:22Speaker 8: couple nymphs. If it's around 100 or below, I'll do
- 42:25Speaker 8: a dry dropper setup.
- 42:26Speaker 1: Okay, still.
- 42:27Speaker 8: You know, just any kind of like a tractor dry
- 42:29Speaker 8: and then little tungsten jighead, pheasant tails, and bead heads
- 42:32Speaker 8: kind of thing.
- 42:34Speaker 1: And then what about the lower part where we fished?
- 42:38Speaker 8: You know, similar deal. What's really cool is we've seen,
- 42:42Speaker 8: you know, with the low water fish, We've had all
- 42:45Speaker 8: of this milfoil, which is like a weed. Oh, yeah.
- 42:49Speaker 8: We saw it when we were fishing.
- 42:50Speaker 1: We did, yeah.
- 42:51Speaker 8: And I want to say that when we were fishing,
- 42:54Speaker 8: they were rising pretty good in the morning before the
- 42:57Speaker 8: sun came up.
- 42:57Speaker 1: They were, yes.
- 42:59Speaker 8: Yep, yep. So that's continued on. That trico hatch, that
- 43:04Speaker 8: trico mayfly hatch, I've never seen it like it's been.
- 43:06Speaker 8: So it's like one of the benefits of the low water.
- 43:09Speaker 8: But the dry fly fishing in the mornings has been
- 43:11Speaker 8: just crazy good. So we'll fish tricos early, just a
- 43:14Speaker 8: single dry. Yes. And then probably like either a nymph
- 43:17Speaker 8: rig or even streamers are working. You know, you can
- 43:21Speaker 8: kind of mix it up through the day depending on
- 43:22Speaker 8: what the fish are doing.
- 43:23Speaker 1: So is there any... like theory that because the water
- 43:29Speaker 1: was dry, it was warm. You probably didn't have as
- 43:33Speaker 1: many fishermen. There wasn't as much pressure as in a
- 43:36Speaker 1: normal summer. Do you think?
- 43:39Speaker 8: Well, that's 100% the case, right? I mean, we weren't fishing.
- 43:43Speaker 8: We didn't do any guide trips. I mean, there was,
- 43:46Speaker 8: there was a time there where we were just, you know,
- 43:48Speaker 8: like when you came out, we were shutting down fishing
- 43:50Speaker 8: early in the morning. Yeah. And then, uh, After, I
- 43:55Speaker 8: want to say, Chip, not long after you and I fished,
- 43:59Speaker 8: we just stopped taking trips down there altogether. So we
- 44:02Speaker 8: didn't put any pressure on the lower river. And, you know,
- 44:05Speaker 8: there might have been some members of the public down
- 44:07Speaker 8: there fishing, but not many. And so, yeah, I mean,
- 44:11Speaker 8: when we had our first guide trip kind of back
- 44:13Speaker 8: in there, once the water cooled off, the fishing was
- 44:15Speaker 8: really good because it's like it hasn't been fished all year.
- 44:17Speaker 1: Nice. So I'm ready to go. Can I come this weekend?
- 44:21Speaker 8: Let's go, buddy. Let's go. Get on a plane. Drive
- 44:24Speaker 8: out here. Let's do it.
- 44:24Speaker 1: You're coming here. I want to mention that while I'm
- 44:27Speaker 1: thinking about it. You're going to be in Round Rock, right,
- 44:30Speaker 1: on Saturday for a presentation?
- 44:34Speaker 8: Yeah, this Saturday I'll be down at the Living Waters
- 44:37Speaker 8: Fly Shop.
- 44:38Speaker 1: Okay.
- 44:39Speaker 8: Chris Johnson there is a good buddy of mine. He
- 44:41Speaker 8: invited me to come down and talk about fishing up
- 44:45Speaker 8: in this area. So you can go to his website.
- 44:47Speaker 8: I think it's, you know, just look up Living Waters
- 44:50Speaker 8: Fly Fishing in Texas there, and you'll find it. And
- 44:52Speaker 8: it's there under the events page. I want to say
- 44:54Speaker 8: it's mid-morning, around 11 a.m., something like that.
- 44:56Speaker 1: All right. So if folks want to go over and
- 45:00Speaker 1: talk to somebody that knows what they're doing about fly
- 45:03Speaker 1: fishing in a lot of different places, this is a
- 45:06Speaker 1: great time to do that. You need to build in
- 45:10Speaker 1: some extra time so you can come down to the
- 45:12Speaker 1: coast and catch a few trout and redfish.
- 45:15Speaker 8: Well, you know, I think I'm going to come down
- 45:17Speaker 8: again for Trout Fest on the Guadalupe. And what is that?
- 45:21Speaker 8: End of February, I think. And I think I'm going
- 45:23Speaker 8: to be doing a presentation for that. So maybe, I
- 45:26Speaker 8: don't know, maybe that's the time. Is the redfishing going
- 45:29Speaker 8: to be good then?
- 45:30Speaker 1: The redfishing should be good. You know, obviously in February,
- 45:34Speaker 1: that's usually our coldest month. It would depend on the weather.
- 45:39Speaker 1: Generally speaking, it would be a good time. Yes, sir.
- 45:43Speaker 1: We need to make that happen, by the way.
- 45:45Speaker 8: All right. All right. Well, let's talk about it. Okay.
- 45:48Speaker 1: We will do that. How long will you book right
- 45:53Speaker 1: now in the fall, depending on what the weather typically does, Nick?
- 45:57Speaker 1: Between now and when would be a really good time
- 46:01Speaker 1: to come up there? Late November? Late November.
- 46:05Speaker 8: No, I think, honestly, once the river clears up, the
- 46:09Speaker 8: fishing is going to be lights out. And so I
- 46:12Speaker 8: would say... you know, what are we, October 1st? I
- 46:16Speaker 8: would say 10 days from now, seven days from now
- 46:19Speaker 8: is going to be the sweet spot through the end
- 46:21Speaker 8: of October.
- 46:22Speaker 1: Okay.
- 46:23Speaker 8: The fishing can be really good in November weather, depending
- 46:27Speaker 8: on the lower river, especially if you want to hike
- 46:29Speaker 8: into the Canyon, the next couple of weeks is probably
- 46:31Speaker 8: going to be the time to do it. Yeah. And
- 46:32Speaker 8: then November, early December for the lower river. And, and look,
- 46:37Speaker 8: Every year is different. Absolutely. And if we get a
- 46:38Speaker 8: bunch of rain and snow, I don't know. But I
- 46:40Speaker 8: tell you, Chip, the fishing up here in the winter
- 46:43Speaker 8: the last several years has been phenomenal. And nobody's doing it.
- 46:48Speaker 8: And it's been some of the best fishing we have. And,
- 46:51Speaker 8: you know, just not a lot of people want to
- 46:53Speaker 8: fish in the winter. But I tell you, you get
- 46:55Speaker 8: a warm day.
- 46:55Speaker 1: Yes.
- 46:56Speaker 8: And, you know, we don't have any humidity here. So
- 46:59Speaker 8: 45 degrees feels like T-shirt weather.
- 47:00Speaker 1: No question.
- 47:01Speaker 8: Yeah. Yeah, yeah, fishing's been really good in the winter.
- 47:04Speaker 8: So if you've got folks that are thinking about coming
- 47:06Speaker 8: up to maybe do a ski trip or just wanting
- 47:09Speaker 8: to get out of Texas, you know, don't hesitate to
- 47:12Speaker 8: throw the fly rod in the car.
- 47:14Speaker 1: That is so cool because, you know, I know here
- 47:18Speaker 1: when fronts start coming in, just fishing along the coast,
- 47:21Speaker 1: I always talk about, hey, two days after the front,
- 47:24Speaker 1: you know, things are going to settle down. The water
- 47:27Speaker 1: will warm up a little bit for these kind of fish.
- 47:31Speaker 1: And that's the time to be there. And I'm guessing
- 47:34Speaker 1: the same holds with you. You'll have some storms come through.
- 47:37Speaker 1: You'll have some snow being dumped. But then you may
- 47:41Speaker 1: have a week of bluebird kind of skies and weather, right?
- 47:46Speaker 8: Yeah, and I tell you, like, you can have some
- 47:48Speaker 8: really good fishing on those snowy days. Yes. Because you
- 47:51Speaker 8: get low light and the trout will come to the
- 47:53Speaker 8: surface and rise. Some of our best days of dry
- 47:55Speaker 8: fly fishing in the winter are when it's snowing. The
- 47:58Speaker 8: trout are a lot more agreeable to these weather conditions
- 48:02Speaker 8: than saltwater fish. I mean, saltwater, you know, I've done
- 48:06Speaker 8: a fair amount of it. Yes. A cold front, some clouds,
- 48:09Speaker 8: some wind, and you're in a tough spot. Trout fishing,
- 48:13Speaker 8: you can have success on about any day, you know,
- 48:17Speaker 8: given that it's not too extreme. In the winter, it's
- 48:19Speaker 8: more about probably comfort level. I mean, if it's real
- 48:22Speaker 8: cold and nasty, you just don't want to be out there. But, yeah,
- 48:24Speaker 8: I mean, you can have good fishing even on a
- 48:27Speaker 8: snowy day. Certainly when you get a warm spell, it
- 48:31Speaker 8: is great to be out there.
- 48:32Speaker 1: You're killing me, man. I'm just telling you. I'm sitting
- 48:35Speaker 1: here looking out at the concrete. You're killing me.
- 48:38Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 48:40Speaker 1: Did you tell me, did I get this right, did
- 48:42Speaker 1: you go to Cuba this last year?
- 48:45Speaker 8: No, we have not been to Cuba in a little while.
- 48:49Speaker 8: We did some fishing trips to Mexico, which were great.
- 48:52Speaker 7: Oh, that's right.
- 48:53Speaker 8: We went to Christmas Island.
- 48:55Speaker 1: Okay.
- 48:55Speaker 8: Yeah. Okay. Yeah, and Argentina. I did a couple trips
- 48:58Speaker 8: down to Argentina. Oh, you did? Yeah.
- 49:00Speaker 1: Patagonia?
- 49:01Speaker 8: Patagonia, and we did northern Argentina for Golden Dorado.
- 49:07Speaker 1: Nice.
- 49:08Speaker 4: How was that?
- 49:08Speaker 7: Fantastic.
- 49:09Speaker 9: It was great.
- 49:10Speaker 8: It was great. I mean, we've been doing that trip
- 49:13Speaker 8: for a long time, and we've got some great friends
- 49:15Speaker 8: down there that guide us, and we just have a blast.
- 49:18Speaker 8: and we just eat and drink and fish our way
- 49:21Speaker 8: across the country. I mean, what else could you ask for?
- 49:24Speaker 1: Well, you couldn't. That's awesome. And as we were talking beforehand,
- 49:30Speaker 1: this is hunting season, bow hunting season. I guess rifle
- 49:34Speaker 1: season starts next week.
- 49:37Speaker 8: Yeah, rifle season's getting ready to start, depending on the
- 49:40Speaker 8: unit you're in. We just wrapped up archery season. I
- 49:44Speaker 8: was lucky enough to get a nice mule deer buck
- 49:47Speaker 8: a couple weeks ago with the bow, and my dad's
- 49:49Speaker 8: coming up for an elk hunt here next week. So,
- 49:53Speaker 8: you know, fingers crossed we get a little more meat
- 49:55Speaker 8: in the freezer.
- 49:56Speaker 1: For those who haven't done it, Nick, and the opportunities
- 50:00Speaker 1: given when starting at the end of this season, when
- 50:04Speaker 1: do they start accepting– applications for next year's hunt?
- 50:09Speaker 8: Oh, you know, that's a good question. I'm not exactly
- 50:11Speaker 8: sure the date, but I want to say it's, it's yeah,
- 50:14Speaker 8: probably around the first of the year when the jaw
- 50:16Speaker 8: opens January sometime. And, um, typically you got to have
- 50:20Speaker 8: your applications in by, uh, don't quote me on this deadline,
- 50:25Speaker 8: March 1st or something. And then you find out by,
- 50:28Speaker 8: you know, a month later you get, you know, you get,
- 50:31Speaker 8: you find out if you got a tag or not.
- 50:32Speaker 8: And then, uh, You know, it's not the easiest state
- 50:35Speaker 8: to draw a tag for residents and non-residents. Right. But
- 50:41Speaker 8: that translates to if you do draw a tag, there's
- 50:43Speaker 8: not a lot of other hunters out there.
- 50:45Speaker 1: And it's pretty, you know, I.
- 50:47Speaker 8: Mean, New Mexico's got some incredible big game. They do.
- 50:49Speaker 8: Without a doubt.
- 50:50Speaker 1: No question. I think it's kind of underrated, actually, as
- 50:54Speaker 1: in my mind is the fishing because people in Texas sometimes,
- 50:58Speaker 1: drive through New Mexico to get to Colorado, and I'm
- 51:01Speaker 1: just telling you, you're missing out.
- 51:04Speaker 8: Yeah, you know, I mean, Chip, you and I have
- 51:06Speaker 8: had a lot of great fishing.
- 51:08Speaker 1: We have.
- 51:08Speaker 8: Look, you know, sometimes we've had, like, you know, like
- 51:10Speaker 8: this year, although we made the most of our day
- 51:12Speaker 8: in July.
- 51:12Speaker 7: Hey, we did.
- 51:13Speaker 1: I'm going to tell you, we had a fabulous day.
- 51:15Speaker 1: Given the fact that it was 90-something degrees, the water
- 51:19Speaker 1: was low, We actually caught trout early. I love catching
- 51:24Speaker 1: smallmouth bass. If people haven't done that, those little devils
- 51:28Speaker 1: fight like crazy. And you were trying to catch us
- 51:31Speaker 1: a big pike. And we had one look, I think,
- 51:35Speaker 1: while we were there.
- 51:36Speaker 8: It was more than a look. If you recall, I
- 51:39Speaker 8: remember now. I remember the exact spot. He ate your
- 51:42Speaker 8: streamer and just bit right through the leader.
- 51:44Speaker 1: That's right. That's right.
- 51:47Speaker 8: Yeah, he nailed it. We just didn't have the right
- 51:48Speaker 8: leader on. We were fishing for bass, and I should
- 51:51Speaker 8: have had that wire leader on. Well, I've.
- 51:54Speaker 1: I've lost a lot more fish than I've caught, as
- 51:56Speaker 1: you well know. But this guy, I'm just telling you,
- 52:01Speaker 1: he is really good at what he does. If you
- 52:03Speaker 1: guys want to go up and fish through the Taos
- 52:07Speaker 1: Fly Shop, Nick has tremendous guides. And how many guides
- 52:11Speaker 1: will you keep through, quote, the down season during fall
- 52:16Speaker 1: and into winter, Nick?
- 52:18Speaker 8: You know, things drop off pretty fast around November, and
- 52:23Speaker 8: we go down to kind of a small crew of
- 52:25Speaker 8: about two to three guides through the winter. Okay. And then,
- 52:29Speaker 8: you know, we ramp back up in the spring up
- 52:31Speaker 8: to about, you know, 12 guides working through the summer.
- 52:34Speaker 1: So, as we've mentioned, if you want to go and
- 52:37Speaker 1: have the river virtually by yourself and have good fishing,
- 52:41Speaker 1: it's a great time to be on the water.
- 52:45Speaker 8: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. This next... Especially after this storm, I'm
- 52:50Speaker 8: really looking forward to the fall fishing. It's beautiful up here.
- 52:54Speaker 8: The weather is going to be great. This next six
- 52:57Speaker 8: weeks is going to be killer.
- 52:59Speaker 1: You're killing me, man. Seriously, you may be hearing from me,
- 53:04Speaker 1: but for sure, we're going to try to get together
- 53:08Speaker 1: in February when you come back. That sounds good. Nick,
- 53:13Speaker 1: what's the best way for folks to get in touch
- 53:17Speaker 1: with the Taos Fly Shop and book a trip?
- 53:21Speaker 8: Well, you can book online, taosflyshop.com. If you don't mind
- 53:26Speaker 8: picking up the phone, 575-751-1312. The nice thing is you
- 53:33Speaker 8: get someone at the shop and all of the folks
- 53:36Speaker 8: that work the shop also guide. So you get to
- 53:38Speaker 8: talk to the people that are actually taking you out.
- 53:40Speaker 8: You get to kind of you know, tell us what you're,
- 53:43Speaker 8: you know, what you want to do. Like you like
- 53:45Speaker 8: to hike, you like to flow, you like dry flies,
- 53:48Speaker 8: you like streamers, whatever, and we'll get all that down
- 53:51Speaker 8: and make sure we get you the best possible trip possible.
- 53:53Speaker 1: Look, this, this shop has a well-earned reputation throughout the
- 53:58Speaker 1: fly fishing community. Nick, I always appreciate the time and
- 54:03Speaker 1: I hope that we see each other sooner rather than later.
- 54:05Speaker 8: All right, buddy. Well, it's good catching up and I'm
- 54:08Speaker 8: looking forward to fishing with you again.
- 54:10Speaker 1: Hey, I talked to my friend Bubba Dixon today. Bubba's busy.
- 54:14Speaker 1: He's doing two businesses. He opened Farmer's Insurance Branch right
- 54:22Speaker 1: down the street from us, actually. College Station off of
- 54:25Speaker 1: Rock Prairie on the bypass access road. Home, life, auto.
- 54:30Speaker 1: Bubba has already saved me a lot of money on
- 54:35Speaker 1: my home insurance. I promise you, he can do the
- 54:38Speaker 1: same for you. Baba is still selling cars with Tegler Chevrolet.
- 54:46Speaker 1: You don't have to drive to Sealy to get a
- 54:49Speaker 1: great deal. You don't have to worry about the overhead.
- 54:52Speaker 1: You don't have to worry about the hidden charges. This
- 54:55Speaker 1: is Baba. He has sold cars for a long time
- 54:59Speaker 1: in our area. One phone number. You can get a
- 55:03Speaker 1: car and you can insure it on the same day.
- 55:07Speaker 1: And they'll deliver it. 979 Call 255-2129.
- 55:16Speaker 8: 979-255-2129.
- 55:17Speaker 1: Call Bubba. Say, hey, Chip says you can sell me
- 55:21Speaker 1: a car and get it insured in the same day. Yes,
- 55:25Speaker 1: I can. Yes, he can. Give Bubba a call. You
- 55:28Speaker 1: know him. He's going to take care of you.
- 55:31Speaker 3: I'm John Clark.
- 55:32Speaker 4: And I'm Josh Eisenhower, Clark Eisenhower Real Estate Services.
- 55:36Speaker 3: Josh and I and our seven associates have over 100
- 55:39Speaker 3: years combined real estate experience in the Brazos Valley.
- 55:42Speaker 5: We specialize in commercial, industrial, and land sales of all types.
- 55:46Speaker 5: We also lease and manage retail, office, industrial, and warehouse
