- 0:03Speaker 1: Artnel's starting pitcher, Matthew Liberator is here. Matt great to
- 0:06Speaker 1: have you on. Do you feel like a senior member
- 0:08Speaker 1: these days in camp?
- 0:11Speaker 2: I wouldn't say I'm a senior member yet. I still
- 0:13Speaker 2: feel pretty young. But we definitely got a lot more
- 0:16Speaker 2: young guys in the clubhouse this year, and fortunately I
- 0:19Speaker 2: do have some some big league experience and I've filled
- 0:21Speaker 2: a lot of different roles in the Big League so far,
- 0:23Speaker 2: so I do feel like I have some knowledge to share.
- 0:26Speaker 3: Are they calling you in this clubhouse?
- 0:28Speaker 4: No? No, yeah, that's standing.
- 0:29Speaker 3: That's standing well compared to the rest of them. I
- 0:33Speaker 3: mean you are the unk yeah, starters right, just testin
- 0:36Speaker 3: me would be the one.
- 0:37Speaker 2: Plante is older than me, got a little more service time,
- 0:40Speaker 2: but yeah, I'm up there in an age, I guess
- 0:42Speaker 2: this year in the clubhouse, which is weird to say,
- 0:44Speaker 2: twenty six years.
- 0:45Speaker 3: Old, gosh six.
- 0:48Speaker 5: Do you sit closer at the to the front of
- 0:50Speaker 5: the bus though, Like that's kind of a thing people
- 0:52Speaker 5: don't understand, Like you do sit based on you can
- 0:56Speaker 5: sit based on your service time or you succeed to
- 1:00Speaker 5: the guys who have more service time. Do you sit
- 1:02Speaker 5: closer to the front of the bus.
- 1:05Speaker 2: I've always been the back of the bus kind of guy,
- 1:07Speaker 2: but I might might have to change that this year.
- 1:09Speaker 2: We'll see more to the middle, Yeah, maybe more front.
- 1:13Speaker 3: Are you either when you're older, either sat in the
- 1:15Speaker 3: front or the back.
- 1:16Speaker 2: Yeah, I prefer the back. I like to be able
- 1:18Speaker 2: to see everybody instead of having my back turn to
- 1:20Speaker 2: everybody but them.
- 1:22Speaker 3: Obviously you're a little worried about someone walking in bend you. Yeah,
- 1:26Speaker 3: I like it. I like it. Have they talked to
- 1:27Speaker 3: you about where you're going to stack up because there's
- 1:30Speaker 3: rumors of opening day for you.
- 1:32Speaker 2: Yeah, we haven't had any talks about that yet. You know,
- 1:35Speaker 2: I think it's partially controllable, largely uncontrollable for me. But
- 1:40Speaker 2: you know, I think that's every starting pitcher's stream to
- 1:42Speaker 2: get that nod and for the first pitch of the team,
- 1:45Speaker 2: first pitch of the season for your team. But right now,
- 1:48Speaker 2: I'm just trying to worry about today and tomorrow. Worry
- 1:49Speaker 2: about tomorrow. You know who it's against, right, Yeah, I do.
- 1:53Speaker 2: Does that mean a little bit more? I think maybe
- 1:56Speaker 2: in twenty three my first start against them after that trade,
- 1:58Speaker 2: and also Randy was on the team at that point,
- 2:01Speaker 2: and getting the face him. But you know, I think
- 2:03Speaker 2: now it's just gone out and pitching.
- 2:05Speaker 3: They played the Rays by the way opening day. You
- 2:08Speaker 3: know that if Randy didn't maybe record something, that you
- 2:12Speaker 3: might still be with the Rays and he might still
- 2:14Speaker 3: be the Cardinals. Maybe.
- 2:15Speaker 2: Yeah, you ever talked to him about hey, we're traded
- 2:19Speaker 2: for each other. I've never actually spoken to him. I
- 2:21Speaker 2: would love to, but yeah, we've got to cross paths
- 2:24Speaker 2: and I haven't gotten the opportunity yet.
- 2:27Speaker 3: He doesn't. He doesn't walk by and just give you
- 2:28Speaker 3: like this scarreo as you walk by. No, no yet,
- 2:31Speaker 3: no yet.
- 2:32Speaker 5: Who's somebody? Who's somebody that sets you up to be
- 2:35Speaker 5: where you are a big league a big league player
- 2:39Speaker 5: that you know has been there since you've been up
- 2:41Speaker 5: and down in the big leagues, or a minor league coach,
- 2:45Speaker 5: somebody that set you up to the point where you're like, Okay,
- 2:47Speaker 5: this guy really was instrumental in helping me become the
- 2:52Speaker 5: starting pitcher that I am today, and not just that
- 2:55Speaker 5: reliever or starter type of guy.
- 2:58Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:58Speaker 2: I mean I think away from the team, my pitching
- 3:01Speaker 2: guy that ork with John Heisinger. I've worked with him
- 3:04Speaker 2: since I was eleven years Old. He's been instrumental in
- 3:06Speaker 2: my development up until this point. And then you know,
- 3:08Speaker 2: all of our staff here has been really really awesome
- 3:11Speaker 2: since I've gotten into the starting role and kind of
- 3:13Speaker 2: helping me fine tune my routine in my process and
- 3:16Speaker 2: being able to watch guys like Wayo and Lancelaine and
- 3:18Speaker 2: Kyle Gibson Sonny last year go about their business and
- 3:21Speaker 2: just take little bits and pieces from what they do
- 3:23Speaker 2: and add it to what I do. And then even
- 3:26Speaker 2: when I was in the bullpen, guys like Andrew Kittridge,
- 3:29Speaker 2: I thought really did a good job of kind of
- 3:31Speaker 2: taking me under their wing and showing me the ropes
- 3:34Speaker 2: and showing me how the things operate in the bullpen
- 3:36Speaker 2: and just really helping me develop the mental side of
- 3:39Speaker 2: the game.
- 3:41Speaker 1: Hey, Matthew, can you run through some of the changes
- 3:44Speaker 1: that you made last year pitch mix wise, and do
- 3:47Speaker 1: you then reevaluate that in the off seasonations with the
- 3:51Speaker 1: team where you kind of save that until spring training
- 3:53Speaker 1: you'd be like, all right, what do we like that
- 3:54Speaker 1: worked and what do we want to change?
- 3:56Speaker 2: Yeah, Arsenal Wise, I don't think I made any changes
- 4:00Speaker 2: during the season last year. My stuff was kind of
- 4:02Speaker 2: my stuff I think we switched usages a little bit,
- 4:06Speaker 2: just you know, as my first few starts was kind
- 4:09Speaker 2: of the league seeing where I was at and then
- 4:10Speaker 2: making an adjustment to me, and then you know, it
- 4:13Speaker 2: was my turn to make an answer back and make
- 4:14Speaker 2: that adjustment back to the league. And so there are
- 4:17Speaker 2: some usage things that we kind of discussed throughout the
- 4:19Speaker 2: season just to put me in a better spot, help
- 4:22Speaker 2: me get more opportunities to you know, punch guys out
- 4:25Speaker 2: and set myself up for success. And then this offseason,
- 4:28Speaker 2: you know, it's out now that I'm working on throwing
- 4:29Speaker 2: a splitter, which would be my seventh pitch, so it's uh, Kevin, Yeah, seven,
- 4:35Speaker 2: I throw six already.
- 4:37Speaker 3: How's the catch?
- 4:37Speaker 4: Did you run out of buttons?
- 4:38Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 4:39Speaker 2: Actually that that has been an issue. We're going to
- 4:41Speaker 2: have to figure something out. There's not enough buttons on
- 4:43Speaker 2: the PitchCom to call them, so I might have to
- 4:46Speaker 2: have a PitchCom on my glove or on my hip
- 4:47Speaker 2: so I can call pitches sometimes and I don't have
- 4:50Speaker 2: to cycle through six or seven shakes in and that bat.
- 4:53Speaker 2: But it's been fun working on it, and honestly, it's
- 4:56Speaker 2: taken some of the stress off of some of the
- 4:57Speaker 2: other stuff to kind of have a project in the
- 5:00Speaker 2: works to tinker with, how do you.
- 5:02Speaker 3: Find seven pitches six pitches? How do you perfect six
- 5:05Speaker 3: or seven pitches? What are they? First of all, four seam,
- 5:09Speaker 3: two seam, I'm.
- 5:09Speaker 2: Going four team two seam, change up, cutter, slaughter, curveball,
- 5:14Speaker 2: and now the splitter. I was primarily growing up fastball,
- 5:19Speaker 2: four team two seam curveball in high school, as the
- 5:22Speaker 2: curveball is too big to get a lot of swing
- 5:25Speaker 2: and misses at that level, so I developed the slaughter.
- 5:27Speaker 2: It's kind of a shorter, harder breaking ball to get
- 5:29Speaker 2: more swing and miss. And then I've always had the
- 5:33Speaker 2: change up also, but it's kind of been hit or miss.
- 5:35Speaker 2: Last year that was kind of my off season project,
- 5:38Speaker 2: was developing a change up that would play at this level,
- 5:40Speaker 2: and I feel like I did a decent job of that.
- 5:43Speaker 2: And then this year just continuing to try and find
- 5:46Speaker 2: more swing and miss and have more more offerings and
- 5:49Speaker 2: more weapons to show to both handed hitters. That was
- 5:52Speaker 2: kind of where the talks four the splitter started to
- 5:54Speaker 2: come in. And then Sonny actually is the person for
- 5:58Speaker 2: me to credit with the cutter. We were playing catch
- 6:01Speaker 2: first time we ever played catch, you saw my slaughter.
- 6:03Speaker 2: He's like, dude, you spin the ball really really well.
- 6:05Speaker 2: Do you think He actually suggested maybe a sweeper, which
- 6:09Speaker 2: I threw for a couple of bullpens and then we
- 6:10Speaker 2: kind of banged it. But the cutter kind of came
- 6:12Speaker 2: out of those conversations too, and that was something that helped,
- 6:16Speaker 2: you know, get right handed hitters off the fastball a
- 6:18Speaker 2: little bit.
- 6:18Speaker 1: For me, Matthew, did you watch the prominence of the
- 6:22Speaker 1: splitter in the postseason last year and how often it
- 6:25Speaker 1: was being thrown? I don't know how often how much
- 6:28Speaker 1: postseason ball you watched, but I mean I got talked
- 6:31Speaker 1: about it. I feel like more than it had been
- 6:33Speaker 1: in a long time.
- 6:35Speaker 2: Could you repeat the beginning part of that question.
- 6:37Speaker 1: Yeah, just wondering if you, Yeah, if you watch the
- 6:40Speaker 1: splitter in the postseason, you know, teams like of course,
- 6:43Speaker 1: you know, Dodgers, Mariners, et cetera, had guys just chucking
- 6:46Speaker 1: great splitters. So wondering if you watch that and if
- 6:50Speaker 1: that had any impact too, and just overall years off
- 6:52Speaker 1: on how the splitter is kind of becoming a huge
- 6:54Speaker 1: thing again in the league.
- 6:56Speaker 2: Yeah, definitely part of the reason those conversations started happened.
- 7:01Speaker 2: You know, obviously Almamoto's got a great splitter, but he's
- 7:04Speaker 2: a little shorter and from a much lower ap proach angle.
- 7:06Speaker 2: So the guy that kind of spurred the decision to
- 7:09Speaker 2: start working on it was watching Trey Savage a splitter
- 7:13Speaker 2: and he's, you know, super steep approach angle, and I'm
- 7:16Speaker 2: not quite that steep, but I do have a relatively
- 7:18Speaker 2: steep approach angle. And we figured if if that was
- 7:21Speaker 2: a pitch that I could feel comfortable with, it could
- 7:23Speaker 2: play really well for me.
- 7:25Speaker 3: Now, when you talked about the PitchCom and not having
- 7:27Speaker 3: enough buttons, but then you said you want to put
- 7:29Speaker 3: a PitchCom on you. So if I'm a hitter and
- 7:31Speaker 3: I see you go to the pitchcomb like, oh he's
- 7:32Speaker 3: going split.
- 7:33Speaker 2: Here, well it won't just be for splitter. That was
- 7:36Speaker 2: the first thing that I said. I was like, if
- 7:37Speaker 2: I'm going to put one on, I got to call
- 7:39Speaker 2: enough of my own pitches that guys can't just say,
- 7:42Speaker 2: oh when he does this, it's a breaking ball or
- 7:44Speaker 2: it's a splitter every time. So I think part of
- 7:46Speaker 2: the reason we'd use the PitchCom is more to prevent
- 7:49Speaker 2: me having to shake, you know, four to six or
- 7:52Speaker 2: seven times to cycle through you shake.
- 7:54Speaker 3: Thisten as a catcher. If you shake me seven times
- 7:57Speaker 3: and then you gave up a hit, we probably would
- 7:59Speaker 3: have action. Yeah, there would be some words exchange, like
- 8:01Speaker 3: you shook me seven times?
- 8:03Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely, And if you did that to YACHTI I
- 8:06Speaker 2: probably wouldn't check one.
- 8:10Speaker 3: Of course, not of course, not last thing before we
- 8:13Speaker 3: let you go. You've been around here with the Cardinals
- 8:16Speaker 3: for a long time. You've been through some good teams,
- 8:18Speaker 3: and now you're kind of on the rebuild.
- 8:19Speaker 4: What are you looking.
- 8:20Speaker 3: Forward to this year? As you know, everyone's saying, oh,
- 8:24Speaker 3: we're young, we're going to be this different team than
- 8:26Speaker 3: what we've been in the past. As kind of a
- 8:28Speaker 3: veteran leader on this team, what are you looking at
- 8:30Speaker 3: as a successful year for the Cardinals.
- 8:32Speaker 2: I think what's really exciting about this time period in
- 8:35Speaker 2: Cardinals history right now is, you know, we really kind
- 8:38Speaker 2: of have the chance to rewrite what this looks like
- 8:41Speaker 2: for the next ten years, fifteen years moving forward. And
- 8:45Speaker 2: you know, this is the first time that we don't
- 8:46Speaker 2: have solidified a Hall of Fame veteran type players in
- 8:49Speaker 2: our clubhouse. And you know, I think that's that's exciting
- 8:53Speaker 2: because it opens the door to a lot of different
- 8:56Speaker 2: ideas and different methodologies, and you know, I think it's
- 9:00Speaker 2: very cool that we get to kind of dictate how
- 9:02Speaker 2: this is going to go for ourselves over the next
- 9:05Speaker 2: five to ten years. And I think that that's a
- 9:08Speaker 2: really exciting place to build from.
- 9:10Speaker 3: Matthew, thanks for joining us. You have a bullpend to
- 9:12Speaker 3: run and get to, so good luck and work on
- 9:14Speaker 3: that split.
- 9:15Speaker 2: Absolutely. Thank you, guys.
- 9:16Speaker 3: Thank you here with Michael McGreevy major major league debut.
- 9:20Speaker 3: Not that long ago, we were just talking about. Yeah,
- 9:22Speaker 3: you were making fun of me because I said I
- 9:23Speaker 3: made my debut before you were born, and you're like, god,
- 9:26Speaker 3: how old are you?
- 9:27Speaker 4: Twenty five years old?
- 9:29Speaker 3: Oh, I mean I'm double. That makes you feel any better.
- 9:32Speaker 6: I mean I'm feeling old in this clubhouse. That makes
- 9:35Speaker 6: me feel young, So I appreciate that. Who's the oldest
- 9:37Speaker 6: guy you have, Stanic? I think, oh, yeah, I'm not
- 9:40Speaker 6: even sure how old he might be thirty five.
- 9:44Speaker 3: I looked at your I looked around and on the
- 9:47Speaker 3: pitching staff, it's definitely standing player wise, it's ramone the earliest.
- 9:54Speaker 3: Maybe I'm not.
- 9:55Speaker 4: Even sure how old Ramone is. I mean you just
- 9:57Speaker 4: got here.
- 9:58Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm in there, take a picture.
- 10:00Speaker 4: Yeah, I sit down and have breakfast with him.
- 10:03Speaker 3: What uh? What are you looking forward to? This year's
- 10:05Speaker 3: gonna be in the rotation more than likely.
- 10:07Speaker 4: Right, yeah, more than likely. Crazier things have happened.
- 10:10Speaker 3: Although although Dusty was in there with a clipboard, yeah,
- 10:14Speaker 3: we were all hiding.
- 10:15Speaker 4: Scared the heck out of me.
- 10:16Speaker 6: In the weight room, He's like all making cuts today.
- 10:18Speaker 6: I was like kind of pause for a moment, like me,
- 10:21Speaker 6: like I thought, I'm pitching a Sarasota on Friday.
- 10:24Speaker 4: And he's no, no, not you, not yet. I'm like,
- 10:25Speaker 4: oh geez.
- 10:26Speaker 6: And so yeah, I mean I'm excited for this year.
- 10:29Speaker 6: We got a lot of young guys, like you said,
- 10:30Speaker 6: in the rotation, even in the clubhouse. So just creating
- 10:33Speaker 6: that new foundation playing with all these young guys. I
- 10:35Speaker 6: think in this rebuild, seeing all the guys are gonna
- 10:38Speaker 6: make their major league debuts this year, I feel like
- 10:40Speaker 6: it's gonna be a lot of guys, a lot of
- 10:41Speaker 6: good guys in the farm system. Anyone can make an
- 10:43Speaker 6: impact on this team. So it's really anybody's ball game
- 10:46Speaker 6: in this clubhouse.
- 10:48Speaker 5: Do you guys talk about that. Do you guys talk
- 10:50Speaker 5: about that like there's no help from the outside, It's
- 10:52Speaker 5: gonna be us young guys. Or is it something that
- 10:54Speaker 5: you're just like, I got to take care of my
- 10:56Speaker 5: business and let everything else happen.
- 11:00Speaker 6: You know, like the major League Baseball season it's so long,
- 11:03Speaker 6: and especially in the minor leagues, it's such a grind
- 11:05Speaker 6: that you do have to have that I got to
- 11:07Speaker 6: take care of my own business first. It's kind of
- 11:10Speaker 6: a selfish way to think about it in the minor leagues.
- 11:12Speaker 6: But in this clubhouse, there's been no talks of hey,
- 11:15Speaker 6: just every man for himself. It's hey, like what kind
- 11:17Speaker 6: of what kind of culture can we create here? What
- 11:20Speaker 6: kind of foundation can we create here? We want everybody
- 11:23Speaker 6: pull on the same side of the rope. So a
- 11:25Speaker 6: lot of young guys with maybe not the most amount
- 11:27Speaker 6: of experience in the big leagues, but I think collectively
- 11:30Speaker 6: we're all in the same point of our career.
- 11:31Speaker 4: Is that if we're all pulling the same direction, that
- 11:34Speaker 4: this rebuild is gonna be very quick.
- 11:36Speaker 5: All right, well this is quick into the interview. But
- 11:38Speaker 5: you said culture and foundation, and everyone's like, oh, the
- 11:42Speaker 5: cardinal way you've been in the minor league system for
- 11:45Speaker 5: a little bit, not you haven't been grind in the
- 11:48Speaker 5: minor leagues. That looked like something crazy. But how much
- 11:54Speaker 5: how much different has the last year been? Now that
- 11:58Speaker 5: we hear that hein Blooms hiring a few more coaches
- 12:01Speaker 5: because you've been up and down from the big leagues
- 12:03Speaker 5: the last two years. Have you seen a difference or
- 12:06Speaker 5: have you heard guys talk about what the difference is.
- 12:10Speaker 6: I think it's more of the just the way that
- 12:14Speaker 6: things have ben There's a lot of turnover in this organization,
- 12:17Speaker 6: with most stepping down him taking over.
- 12:19Speaker 4: All these upgrades, these new facilities.
- 12:21Speaker 6: Here in Palm Beach are huge kind of editions of coaches, strength, coaches,
- 12:27Speaker 6: trainers in the minor league system. So when you can
- 12:29Speaker 6: go up, you are you have everything you need to
- 12:33Speaker 6: have a short stint in the minor league, so when
- 12:34Speaker 6: you get to the big leagues, you're ready to perform.
- 12:37Speaker 6: And so that's like, I think that's the cardinal way
- 12:40Speaker 6: right now, is that Hey, like we're gonna be We're
- 12:42Speaker 6: gonna go back to being one of the best farm
- 12:44Speaker 6: systems in baseball. I think we're ranked number two. I
- 12:48Speaker 6: think right now, and like that's how it should be.
- 12:50Speaker 6: There's plenty of talent throughout the organization, all the way
- 12:53Speaker 6: down from low end the guys we just drafted, like
- 12:55Speaker 6: Liam Doyle.
- 12:57Speaker 4: And and upwards into Triple A.
- 12:59Speaker 6: That this team is going to be good for years
- 13:02Speaker 6: to come, and it starts in the minor leagues and
- 13:04Speaker 6: we've done a really good job of kind of like
- 13:06Speaker 6: recreating that farm system.
- 13:07Speaker 3: How much do you pay attention to that who's drafted
- 13:10Speaker 3: and you're still young? Yeah, you weren't drafted that long? No,
- 13:13Speaker 3: I really was you pay attention to Yeah, oh we
- 13:15Speaker 3: drafted a picture, he might take my spot.
- 13:18Speaker 6: Well, I mean there's always that, Like we're all human.
- 13:20Speaker 6: I think we all have just that short second of like, oh,
- 13:22Speaker 6: like we drafted like Cooper Jerpy crap, here we go.
- 13:26Speaker 3: Who's that?
- 13:28Speaker 6: He's another one of our first rounds in state. Yeah,
- 13:31Speaker 6: just left eat back in twenty twenty two. Drafted Liam
- 13:33Speaker 6: Doyle this year, And you know, as after I got
- 13:36Speaker 6: drafted in the first round, I reached out to Jerpy,
- 13:38Speaker 6: reach out to Chase Davis. Will we drafted in the
- 13:40Speaker 6: first reach out to Liam Doyle. This year's like, hey man,
- 13:43Speaker 6: we're super excited to have you in the organization. You're
- 13:45Speaker 6: gonna love it, and trying to step into that leadership role.
- 13:48Speaker 6: Being the quote unquote old guy so far in this club,
- 13:51Speaker 6: as being twenty five, you want to feel like these
- 13:53Speaker 6: new guys are welcome and just know like, hey, like
- 13:55Speaker 6: we're gonna need you in a couple of years.
- 13:58Speaker 5: Is that something that you do on your own or
- 14:00Speaker 5: does the ORG tap you on the shoulder and go, hey,
- 14:03Speaker 5: we see you as part of the future. Can you
- 14:06Speaker 5: reach out to these guys.
- 14:07Speaker 6: I mean it's something I did on my own. I'm
- 14:09Speaker 6: sure the ORG is not unhappy that I did it.
- 14:13Speaker 6: When we traded away Sonny and Wilson and we got
- 14:15Speaker 6: Richard Fitz, Hunter Dobbins, Dustin May. I got their numbers
- 14:19Speaker 6: from a couple of our trainers, just reached out to them,
- 14:21Speaker 6: say hey, man, like, excited to have you, like, congrats
- 14:24Speaker 6: on signing. My name is Michael McGreevy. Just if here's
- 14:28Speaker 6: my number. If you need anything any questions, just text me.
- 14:31Speaker 6: And just want to make everybody feel real comfortable. So
- 14:33Speaker 6: there's no like awkward first, there's two first or second
- 14:36Speaker 6: weeks of spring and we can just hit the ground running.
- 14:40Speaker 5: That's super mature of you, because like it's a cutthroat business.
- 14:44Speaker 5: But with that cutthroat business, like you got to create
- 14:47Speaker 5: that you got to create that culture that you want
- 14:50Speaker 5: to play in for the next six years or ten years,
- 14:53Speaker 5: however long you play with the Cardinals.
- 14:54Speaker 3: But do you have a.
- 14:56Speaker 5: Little bit of are you a little like, ah, dang
- 14:59Speaker 5: it when you lose a sunny Gray, when you trade
- 15:02Speaker 5: away a Wilson Contreres, when you trade away pieces to
- 15:05Speaker 5: your organization, your team, that you're like, I want to win. Obviously,
- 15:09Speaker 5: I want to make a ton of money in the
- 15:10Speaker 5: big leagues, but I want to win.
- 15:12Speaker 6: Also, yeah, I was. I'm sad we got to we
- 15:16Speaker 6: traded Sonny. It was the right thing to do. The
- 15:19Speaker 6: other I'm super sad that we lost on because he
- 15:21Speaker 6: had all the tea times everywhere on the road. But
- 15:26Speaker 6: it's the necessary steps that we needed to take to
- 15:30Speaker 6: not just be on that cut of like, well, like
- 15:32Speaker 6: we're about five hundred, we might sneak into the wild cars,
- 15:35Speaker 6: Like that's just not good enough for this organization or
- 15:37Speaker 6: in this fan base. We want to make sure we're
- 15:40Speaker 6: winning division after division, getting into that playoffs, making a
- 15:43Speaker 6: deep run of the playoffs in the World Series, and
- 15:45Speaker 6: that just doesn't happen with a few band aid pieces
- 15:48Speaker 6: here and there, signing a few guys that might make
- 15:50Speaker 6: a difference, and they did. They certainly had great times here,
- 15:53Speaker 6: but it's creating that stronger foundation to really build what's
- 15:58Speaker 6: good for the future. And it was necessary steps, but
- 16:01Speaker 6: it did suck seeing him go, especially players of that caliber.
- 16:04Speaker 5: Did you take Sunny's money playing golf or because you
- 16:07Speaker 5: said he made all the tea times or does he
- 16:09Speaker 5: take your money?
- 16:11Speaker 4: Uh?
- 16:11Speaker 6: We played twice this year, once in Saint Louis where
- 16:15Speaker 6: I beat him. No money was on the table, and
- 16:16Speaker 6: then we went to Whistling Straights and Milwaukee, and I
- 16:20Speaker 6: think he probably got me by a couple of strokes.
- 16:24Speaker 4: Just he's a good course manager. I'm more of I'm
- 16:26Speaker 4: just gonna let it fly.
- 16:27Speaker 6: And you know, you drive for show, putt for doe,
- 16:29Speaker 6: and I just didn't put it all that day.
- 16:31Speaker 3: What's the best place he took you Whistling Straights, He
- 16:34Speaker 3: only took you two places?
- 16:35Speaker 4: Well, we I went on my own.
- 16:36Speaker 6: We just we played just in Saint Louis and stuff.
- 16:38Speaker 6: But I was I was up and down all year.
- 16:40Speaker 6: So anytime I came up play against the Mets, we
- 16:43Speaker 6: win and say, all right, Mike, see you later. I
- 16:44Speaker 6: can't golf with him, so I didn't really get into it.
- 16:47Speaker 6: Towards the end of the year and we were playing
- 16:49Speaker 6: at San Francisco and he's like, hey, you want to golf.
- 16:51Speaker 6: I'm like, ah, like I pitched tomorrow. And he's like, oh, yeah,
- 16:55Speaker 6: but you golf left you. You're like, swing, You're rotating
- 16:57Speaker 6: the other way. It'll be good for you. I'm like,
- 16:59Speaker 6: maybe if I was on You're thirteen, I do that,
- 17:01Speaker 6: but I'm not even a full year in just yet,
- 17:03Speaker 6: so let's just wait on that.
- 17:05Speaker 3: Yeah, what I wouldn't need to hear the story about
- 17:07Speaker 3: your debut. I was told you have a debut story
- 17:10Speaker 3: that we need to hear about.
- 17:11Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 17:12Speaker 6: So it was right at the trade deadline of twenty
- 17:14Speaker 6: twenty four and Bja, our manager in Triple A, calls me.
- 17:19Speaker 6: They were pushing me back at day already and I
- 17:21Speaker 6: was like, oh my gosh, they're gonna dangle me in
- 17:23Speaker 6: front of other teams.
- 17:24Speaker 4: I'm gonna get traded.
- 17:25Speaker 6: Like no crap, here we go get the call, Hey,
- 17:28Speaker 6: you going the big leagues, And so I fly to
- 17:30Speaker 6: Saint Louis from Durham get in the day before. Hey,
- 17:34Speaker 6: can I go to the field play catch? Like you know,
- 17:36Speaker 6: I watched the game. They're like, no, you're not on
- 17:38Speaker 6: the roster just yet. So I have to stay in
- 17:41Speaker 6: the hotel right next to the field at Bush. So
- 17:44Speaker 6: I go down to the bar. I'm sitting at the
- 17:46Speaker 6: bar eating a steak and I'm watching Lance Lynne pitch
- 17:49Speaker 6: against the Rangers.
- 17:49Speaker 4: And that's how I'm getting my scattering.
- 17:51Speaker 6: Report because I know nothing about the defending World Series
- 17:54Speaker 6: champions Texas Rangers.
- 17:55Speaker 4: You know any of the players, none of the players.
- 17:58Speaker 4: And I was like, well, I mean I knew I
- 17:59Speaker 4: knew of or I do know of them.
- 18:01Speaker 6: Like, okay, what do they struggle at? All I know
- 18:02Speaker 6: is Corey Seeger hits absolute nukes and he swings at
- 18:05Speaker 6: the first pitch every time.
- 18:06Speaker 4: Every time, and that's what he did all days. One
- 18:09Speaker 4: of the first pitch and he almost took me deep.
- 18:11Speaker 4: But thank god, but.
- 18:12Speaker 3: Did you win that game? I did, So do you
- 18:14Speaker 3: now do that every time? I mean, I wish now
- 18:17Speaker 3: you go deep. See that's the problem exactly.
- 18:20Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean it's just sit at the bar to
- 18:23Speaker 6: night before I mean that's a bad look though. I
- 18:25Speaker 6: mean in the big he's got camera phones now people
- 18:28Speaker 6: are all over the place. Oh, Mike McGreevey sitting at
- 18:30Speaker 6: the bar before a game. This isn't good look for
- 18:32Speaker 6: the Cardinals. Not the good foundation when trying to create
- 18:34Speaker 6: you win if we win.
- 18:36Speaker 3: Yeah, no you can.
- 18:37Speaker 5: No, it's not sitting at the bar. You can just
- 18:40Speaker 5: prop up next to a TV in the clubhouse and
- 18:42Speaker 5: have a steak. How how hard is that to have
- 18:45Speaker 5: a routine that like that worked out and you're like
- 18:50Speaker 5: man like because a lot of people don't understand. You
- 18:52Speaker 5: might not be superstitious, but if you ate a steak
- 18:55Speaker 5: before you went out and dealt you're like, You're like,
- 18:59Speaker 5: I'm gonna have a steak again. I know I'm so
- 19:00Speaker 5: step chicken, but I feel like I'm gonna have a
- 19:02Speaker 5: How hard is that to get away from that superstition
- 19:06Speaker 5: slash routine.
- 19:08Speaker 6: Yeah, you definitely. It's too long of a season too.
- 19:11Speaker 6: You're just gonna exhaust yourself. If you were like, oh,
- 19:13Speaker 6: I need to I need to do this, I do this,
- 19:15Speaker 6: I do this, and then if you add something in
- 19:16Speaker 6: by accident and you have another good day, then you
- 19:19Speaker 6: just have to add another thing into the routine. All
- 19:21Speaker 6: of a sudden, the routine lasts four hours before game time.
- 19:24Speaker 6: Come that first pitch, you're like, oh my god, I'm.
- 19:26Speaker 4: Exhausted, honey.
- 19:27Speaker 3: So yeah, for his routine like noon for seven o'clock game,
- 19:30Speaker 3: Sonny's a different cat.
- 19:31Speaker 4: And you know that.
- 19:32Speaker 3: So I mean because Sonny was like I remember, Sonny
- 19:34Speaker 3: would start like Sonny's starting and if there was like
- 19:37Speaker 3: a drop of rain, and he's like, oh, I started
- 19:39Speaker 3: my routine. What do I do now? Yeah?
- 19:41Speaker 6: Seriously, Yeah, you try to pick and choose what works
- 19:44Speaker 6: for Sonny that works for you. Try not to do
- 19:46Speaker 6: everything he does. But I'd get to the field when
- 19:49Speaker 6: clubhouse opens and all of a sudden there was Sonny
- 19:51Speaker 6: too doing his routine five hours before the game.
- 19:54Speaker 4: Oh my gosh, I'd be exhausted by then.
- 19:57Speaker 3: You're young.
- 19:58Speaker 5: What is the what do you need to to have?
- 20:00Speaker 5: What at the end of this season you have said,
- 20:03Speaker 5: I did this to make my season successful, Because yes,
- 20:07Speaker 5: you were up and down and being called up and
- 20:09Speaker 5: down a lot of the time. That's not on you,
- 20:12Speaker 5: like the oreg is. You know, you have options all
- 20:14Speaker 5: that stuff, But what is the thing that you need
- 20:17Speaker 5: to improve on or that you worked on so that
- 20:20Speaker 5: you have as successful as a season as you want.
- 20:23Speaker 4: Yeah, every year, I'm always going into it.
- 20:25Speaker 6: I want to make every start, and no matter if
- 20:26Speaker 6: that was in Triple A and the big leagues last year,
- 20:29Speaker 6: being a starter and going deep into games, that's kind
- 20:31Speaker 6: of my mo.
- 20:32Speaker 4: That's how I play the game.
- 20:34Speaker 6: If I make every start and I'm upwards close to
- 20:37Speaker 6: two hundred dnings, that's what I want to do. That's
- 20:39Speaker 6: what I need to do. I need to get my
- 20:40Speaker 6: body in the right shape to do that. Because that
- 20:42Speaker 6: last game in Wrigley Field last year, game thirty two,
- 20:44Speaker 6: for me it I was just exhausted, and when Allie
- 20:47Speaker 6: took the ball from my hands, I could not throw
- 20:49Speaker 6: another pitch And it was eye opening. I mean that
- 20:53Speaker 6: thirty two games instead of the twenty eight in the
- 20:54Speaker 6: minor leagues, with that certified off day Monday, it was
- 20:58Speaker 6: a huge wake up call.
- 20:59Speaker 4: Need to get the body no shade.
- 21:00Speaker 6: That five five day rotation is huge, and so if
- 21:03Speaker 6: I can make every start and not have that crash
- 21:06Speaker 6: and burn like I did at the end and finished
- 21:08Speaker 6: strong going into October, I think it'll be huge for
- 21:10Speaker 6: the team's success.
- 21:11Speaker 4: And mine two would be pretty solid.
- 21:14Speaker 6: That would be nice. I'd like that a lot. I'm
- 21:16Speaker 6: getting I'm getting closed. I think max right now is
- 21:18Speaker 6: like one seventy five, so we're we're just sneaking up
- 21:22Speaker 6: on it.
- 21:22Speaker 3: I'm getting two hundred. I don't care if I make
- 21:24Speaker 3: every start. I'm getting two hundred.
- 21:25Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 21:25Speaker 6: I think that you need one full year of service
- 21:27Speaker 6: time before you can tell them to do things for you.
- 21:29Speaker 4: Oh yeah, you get off that's true.
- 21:34Speaker 3: If you get off to a good start, then you
- 21:35Speaker 3: can tell them whatever you want.
- 21:36Speaker 4: Absolutely.
- 21:37Speaker 6: If I have a stake before, and you know, scout
- 21:39Speaker 6: the team at the bar have great days like that,
- 21:41Speaker 6: I might be able to then if.
- 21:42Speaker 3: You're miss, If you're miss in Milwaukee, five starts to
- 21:44Speaker 3: make the All Star team, he tells.
- 21:46Speaker 4: Them what he wants exactly five.
- 21:49Speaker 3: All right, Michael, thank you very much, by the way,
- 21:51Speaker 3: best team in the in the Big West. You see
- 21:54Speaker 3: Santa barb okay all day long. Wait, who's in that
- 21:57Speaker 3: Fullerton fullertin Irvine Long Beach? David got Bakersfield, Hawaii. You
- 22:02Speaker 3: see San Diego season said the right, Yeah, except for Hawaii. Yeah, yeah,
- 22:10Speaker 3: Hawaii is always fun trip. I've been all right, Well, Michael,
- 22:12Speaker 3: thank you good luck this year, and I hope you
- 22:14Speaker 3: do get to two hundred.
- 22:15Speaker 4: Yeah, that'd be nice.
- 22:16Speaker 1: Hey, what do you got for us, dude? Give us
- 22:19Speaker 1: something good, one good story so far at camp, or
- 22:22Speaker 1: one player that stands out, give us something that that
- 22:24Speaker 1: nobody else knows.
- 22:26Speaker 7: I think the energy has just been great. I mean, honestly,
- 22:28Speaker 7: the guys have been out here just putting in the
- 22:30Speaker 7: work every day. And you know, obviously it's a different
- 22:32Speaker 7: look team for us here in saying lois this here,
- 22:34Speaker 7: But the guys are really jelling and then just doing
- 22:36Speaker 7: the things that need to do every day. But I think,
- 22:38Speaker 7: you know, Mason Win's been great out there, Birley's been
- 22:41Speaker 7: great just leaving the guys as well. So it's gonna
- 22:43Speaker 7: be fun to see who emerges as a leader here
- 22:45Speaker 7: and just to see these guys take the next time.
- 22:47Speaker 3: You never talk like this ever as a player. Now, No,
- 22:49Speaker 3: it was a player, not as a coach. Now you're
- 22:51Speaker 3: like coach speak.
- 22:52Speaker 8: I talked like the second player.
- 22:53Speaker 3: No you did not, man, you did not talk like this.
- 22:56Speaker 3: You're like, no, you gotta get the boot down, come
- 22:58Speaker 3: on yelling it not. Oh yes, everyone's the value the
- 23:02Speaker 3: lives are high here at Cardinals camp.
- 23:04Speaker 8: They have been high. They've been great.
- 23:07Speaker 1: Well, it's very different. I mean a lot of the
- 23:10Speaker 1: vets from last year were traded away, So what happens
- 23:13Speaker 1: when that happens.
- 23:14Speaker 7: Yeah, Like, you know, it's a young group out there,
- 23:16Speaker 7: So the fun thing for me is to see who
- 23:18Speaker 7: steps up and and who takes over that leadership role
- 23:21Speaker 7: and the who the guys gravitated to. And they've been
- 23:23Speaker 7: doing a really good job of that and it's been
- 23:25Speaker 7: fun to watch so far.
- 23:28Speaker 1: A J did you really just also want to make
- 23:31Speaker 1: fun of us? You're not not winning the championship game.
- 23:34Speaker 3: We weren't even gonna go. We're we're gonna save that
- 23:38Speaker 3: for the end. We don't want John to get up
- 23:39Speaker 3: in the middle of this interview and walk out, so
- 23:41Speaker 3: we're gonna get there first. Crowds I think has a
- 23:44Speaker 3: question before we go there.
- 23:45Speaker 5: A baseball question, because yeah, an actual baseball question and
- 23:50Speaker 5: not make fun of you, like a.
- 23:53Speaker 8: What is.
- 23:55Speaker 5: How much how much is it going to change your
- 23:57Speaker 5: base running that you know you have young guys yet,
- 24:00Speaker 5: not that you had fossils that didn't move or at all,
- 24:04Speaker 5: but like, do you have to change the aggressiveness in
- 24:07Speaker 5: the sense that like these dudes are able to take chances. Like,
- 24:11Speaker 5: I get it. Everybody wants to win in the big leagues,
- 24:13Speaker 5: but sometimes when you take chances running the basis, you
- 24:16Speaker 5: have to learn where too far is.
- 24:20Speaker 7: Yeah, I think some of these guys that are playing
- 24:22Speaker 7: this year that they kind of did that last year, right.
- 24:23Speaker 7: I mean, you saw Vic have a great year on
- 24:25Speaker 7: the basis last year, and I expect him to continue
- 24:27Speaker 7: to get better with that. Right, We're going over just
- 24:30Speaker 7: different tips and tells and just you know, where the
- 24:32Speaker 7: games evolved with all that.
- 24:33Speaker 8: So I think this is a team that's going to
- 24:35Speaker 8: push on the bases.
- 24:36Speaker 7: We're gonna you know, we're harping all the little things
- 24:37Speaker 7: that you know, kind of the fundamentals of the game,
- 24:39Speaker 7: and we're gonna have to do a lot of things
- 24:40Speaker 7: right for us to win games. So we're harping on
- 24:43Speaker 7: all those little things. Not right now on camp I think.
- 24:45Speaker 1: I have a good quality control question here, abs challenge system.
- 24:50Speaker 1: How do you control the quality of tapping the helmet
- 24:55Speaker 1: for hitters who don't quite have it as well as
- 24:59Speaker 1: some other hitters to you, and you don't want them
- 25:01Speaker 1: to waste it early on in a game and then
- 25:03Speaker 1: not have it in a tight spot for a big hitter.
- 25:06Speaker 7: Yeah, that's something that we've kind of been like monitoring
- 25:08Speaker 7: and just kind of seeing, you know, we know who
- 25:10Speaker 7: knows the strikes on pretty well or whatnot. But I
- 25:12Speaker 7: think it's going to be interesting in general, right like
- 25:14Speaker 7: how team strategize with abs and how to use and
- 25:17Speaker 7: do you do it early, do you do it late
- 25:18Speaker 7: or whennot. So I think that's something that during the
- 25:20Speaker 7: season it's going to be fun to kind of see
- 25:22Speaker 7: what different teams are doing and we'll kind of see
- 25:24Speaker 7: like where the trends are with that. But it's something
- 25:26Speaker 7: that interrant training. It's it's been kind of fun to
- 25:28Speaker 7: watch and it's it's kind of exciting the dugout and
- 25:30Speaker 7: for the fans. So it's definitely gonna be something that's
- 25:32Speaker 7: a different element of the game.
- 25:33Speaker 3: Now for sure, do you tell pictures not to tap
- 25:36Speaker 3: their head because the one the other one for the
- 25:37Speaker 3: you see the one for the Yankees O day, it
- 25:39Speaker 3: was like three inches outside the pictures out for ANANDO
- 25:41Speaker 3: crew and the catcher's.
- 25:42Speaker 8: Like, no, no, no, please, don't don't.
- 25:45Speaker 7: And I think I think that's like I said, it's
- 25:46Speaker 7: gonna be interesting to see when you know, when do
- 25:48Speaker 7: you do when do you not? I mean end of
- 25:49Speaker 7: the game, the game finishes on a strike three. I
- 25:51Speaker 7: think you should just do it no matter what, right
- 25:52Speaker 7: when you have them. But I think it's going to
- 25:54Speaker 7: be interesting to see, both on the pitching side and
- 25:56Speaker 7: on the offensive side of like how can we take
- 25:58Speaker 7: advantage of the system and how are going to work.
- 26:01Speaker 7: It's similar to the you know, when they implemented the
- 26:02Speaker 7: new rules on the basis a couple of years ago,
- 26:04Speaker 7: and then we've seen teams kind of like strategize on
- 26:07Speaker 7: that now. So it's going to be just a new
- 26:08Speaker 7: rule that you know, teams are going to learn how
- 26:10Speaker 7: to take advantage of.
- 26:11Speaker 3: All right, let's get to it. Have you recovered from
- 26:13Speaker 3: the football game yet?
- 26:14Speaker 8: Yeah? I recovered where you did you go to.
- 26:17Speaker 3: The Indiana ass whooping of Miami?
- 26:18Speaker 8: Of course?
- 26:19Speaker 3: I went, okay, what about baseball this weekend?
- 26:21Speaker 8: I was there Friday night. That was not fun. Yeah.
- 26:23Speaker 7: I drove two and a half hours down, took my
- 26:24Speaker 7: family to the game, and it wasn't a fun.
- 26:26Speaker 3: Way they have John Houckman's not John Jay Field.
- 26:28Speaker 7: It's not man, that's a good question. I think you
- 26:32Speaker 7: got to donate about ten minute dollars for that when
- 26:33Speaker 7: to happen.
- 26:34Speaker 3: But I mean, you know all he got an extension.
- 26:37Speaker 3: Descalso got an extension where John Jay extension.
- 26:40Speaker 8: John jayme's doing great? Right wars ever?
- 26:42Speaker 3: Oh wow? I mean, Scott, what do you?
- 26:43Speaker 8: I mean?
- 26:44Speaker 3: You guys got to stick together. I just sent a
- 26:46Speaker 3: stat to John that since two thousand and nine, forty
- 26:49Speaker 3: four and fourteen, Florida is against Miami and baseball, Miami
- 26:53Speaker 3: used to be good in baseball. What happened?
- 26:55Speaker 7: I mean, it was still pretty good. We went to
- 26:56Speaker 7: the Super Regional last year. You know that that kind
- 26:58Speaker 7: good enough in Miami. We'll see, We'll see what happens
- 27:00Speaker 7: in June. We'll see what happens in June. We'll see
- 27:02Speaker 7: who's in Omaha this year. It's not how you start.
- 27:05Speaker 1: You got to ask him a question back and ask
- 27:07Speaker 1: him how U A B is. Do you know who's
- 27:09Speaker 1: playing for U A B.
- 27:11Speaker 3: I don't my son, and guess who beat Florida. U
- 27:14Speaker 3: A B in Miami couldn't be So I means U
- 27:17Speaker 3: A B is better than Miami and baseball doesn't. It
- 27:19Speaker 3: isn't that how fans.
- 27:20Speaker 4: Look at that.
- 27:22Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah, I don't know how too much about this
- 27:24Speaker 7: AJ math that we got going on here.
- 27:26Speaker 3: It's like girl math. It works. You just you justify
- 27:28Speaker 3: things however you want. You know, it's a new it's
- 27:30Speaker 3: a new slogan. Are you really teaching base running?
- 27:34Speaker 8: Yes?
- 27:35Speaker 3: Wow, we were slow though.
- 27:37Speaker 8: You have to have instincts out there, you know, and
- 27:39Speaker 8: work on some things now. But we do. Honestly. Our
- 27:41Speaker 8: staff's great where we you know, we collaborate on everything.
- 27:43Speaker 3: I saw the scales out there. We're going to getting
- 27:45Speaker 3: picked off.
- 27:46Speaker 7: Yeah, you know, we were implementing some new things out
- 27:48Speaker 7: there and we're working on That's what trainings for.
- 27:51Speaker 1: I have one more serious baseball question on the base
- 27:53Speaker 1: running front. Did you see what Juan Soto and Josh
- 27:58Speaker 1: Naylor did on the last year and can you use
- 28:01Speaker 1: that as legit material to show a lot of your
- 28:04Speaker 1: guys how much there is to base running beyond just
- 28:08Speaker 1: how freaking fast you are, because Naylor and Soto are
- 28:11Speaker 1: not beating. Yeah they're not. I mean Nayler's kind of slow.
- 28:14Speaker 1: SODA's not slow, but he's not fast. So it's impressive
- 28:17Speaker 1: to see that and do other teams like yours use
- 28:20Speaker 1: that when you're talking to players about how you don't
- 28:22Speaker 1: have to be you know, a ninety five percentile speed guy,
- 28:25Speaker 1: sprint speed guy, and the biggs to be a really
- 28:28Speaker 1: good base runner.
- 28:29Speaker 8: Yeah, we've used those guys as example.
- 28:31Speaker 7: And you know, someone that played here for a long
- 28:33Speaker 7: time as well, Paul Goldtchmith, did a good job of
- 28:34Speaker 7: seeing basses as well.
- 28:35Speaker 8: Just paying attention to the game.
- 28:36Speaker 7: You know, if you watch the game and you see
- 28:38Speaker 7: what the pitchers are doing, what tendencies to have. So
- 28:40Speaker 7: that's something that we always look to take advantage of.
- 28:42Speaker 7: And those are guys that we have used as examples
- 28:45Speaker 7: here in our club. Also the guys around the legs
- 28:47Speaker 7: that are that are taking advantage of the situations out there,
- 28:49Speaker 7: and that's something that we can all get better on.
- 28:51Speaker 8: For sure. You're the man.
- 28:52Speaker 1: Good to see you. I'll see you soon, hopefully.
- 28:54Speaker 8: You guys.
- 28:55Speaker 3: One of my favorite with my favorite one of my
- 28:58Speaker 3: favorite X teammates.
- 28:59Speaker 8: Well he didn't had about many people, so yeah he doesn't.
- 29:02Speaker 1: And you get random shoutouts as you know. So sometimes
- 29:05Speaker 1: I'll get a.
- 29:05Speaker 3: Text He'll be like, did you guys shout me out today?
- 29:07Speaker 1: I'll be like, yeah, AJ just randomly brought you up,
- 29:09Speaker 1: so the famous, world famous John Jay with us.
- 29:12Speaker 8: Good to see you, but.
- 29:15Speaker 1: No, I love it.
- 29:16Speaker 3: Let it flow.
