- 0:22SPEAKER_00: If you've ever been hiking on a trail in the woods, you've probably seen those markers that show your distance and keep you headed in the right direction.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: The purpose of those signs is to keep you from getting lost and to give you some guidance along the way.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: Well, I think there are similar signs in the life of every writer.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: And those markers indicate your direction, but they're not always so obvious as the trail markers out on a trail in the woods.
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: One of those signs, or trail markers, if you will, for writers is our fear.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: I think it's helpful to ask, what is it that you're afraid to do?
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: Is it outlining that book?
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: Is it contacting that author who you want to speak with?
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: Maybe it's setting up your website or sending off some writing to your beta readers.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: I think your biggest writing-related fear is a huge indicator of the direction you should go.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: When it comes to creative work, your fear is usually a sign telling you what you should be focusing on.
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: Ralph Waldo Emerson put it simply.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: He said, Always do what you are afraid to do.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: Most of us do the exact opposite, don't we?
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: We let fear push us away from the very thing that we should be doing.
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: Well, truthfully, you don't need to be afraid of fear, though.
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: Fear can be your best friend, a friend that gently guides you toward a creative calling that'll bring you a lot more success and fulfillment.
