- October 13 I Had Heard; Now I See Topic: Perspective. Scripture: Job 42:1–6 1 Then Job answered Yahweh: 2 “I know that you can do all things, and that no purpose of yours can be restrained. 3 You asked, ‘Who is this who hides counsel without knowledge?’ therefore I have uttered that which I didn’t understand, things too wonderful for me, which I didn’t know. 4 You said, ‘Listen, now, and I will speak; I will question you, and you will answer me.’ 5 I had heard of you by the hearing of the ear, but now my eye sees you. 6 Therefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes.” Context After long chapters of grief, accusation, protest, and unanswered questions, Job encounters God’s overwhelming wisdom. Job’s perspective changes, even though he is not given a tidy explanation for every part of his suffering. Let It Shape Your Life Job does not reach the end with a neat chart explaining why everything happened. He reaches a larger view of God and a humbler view of his own understanding. That distinction matters. Faith does not always mean receiving the explanation you wanted. Sometimes it means discovering that your perspective, while honest, was still incomplete. Job had said true things about his pain, and God later corrects Job’s friends for misrepresenting Him. So humility here is not self-hatred or pretending Job’s suffering was imaginary. It is the recognition that human understanding has limits. There are seasons when the faithful sentence is not, “Now I understand everything,” but, “I see that I did not know as much as I thought.” Perspective can change without every question disappearing. That kind of humility makes room for wonder alongside grief. Think About It What unresolved situation might require you to hold your questions honestly while also admitting that your current perspective may not contain the whole story?
