- 0:00Speaker 1: Eagles. Of course, they'll have their schedule released next week
- 0:04Speaker 1: and certainly looking forward to seeing the when they will
- 0:08Speaker 1: be where and when, And now that's next week. But
- 0:10Speaker 1: today Adam Kaplan is here on a Friday edition the
- 0:14Speaker 1: a little deeper look at what we can expect now
- 0:17Speaker 1: from this new Eagles offensive scheme. We had good conversation
- 0:20Speaker 1: with Jeff about it on Monday and Wednesday, but let's
- 0:23Speaker 1: take a little deeper look at what this new scheme
- 0:26Speaker 1: will bring to the Philadelphia Eagles. Adam, Welcome to this
- 0:30Speaker 1: Friday show.
- 0:31Speaker 2: Yeah, Mike, you know when we talked, first talked, when
- 0:35Speaker 2: the Eagles made these coaching changes, you know, I told you, look,
- 0:38Speaker 2: it's going to look completely different. It's gonna look like
- 0:40Speaker 2: something we haven't really seen. And you know, we learn
- 0:43Speaker 2: more over serious weeks and months now and here we are.
- 0:46Speaker 2: The veterans will be in soon for their first ot practices.
- 0:49Speaker 2: Right now, it's just rookies and then they'll they'll they're
- 0:54Speaker 2: going to start their install which is for the season,
- 0:56Speaker 2: and they'll they'll get that ready. Now, when I talk
- 1:00Speaker 2: to Mike, I still expect this to be the case.
- 1:03Speaker 2: It'll look like more like Sean mcvay's offense than Mike
- 1:06Speaker 2: Shanahan's or excuse me, Kyle. Kyle got it from his dad,
- 1:09Speaker 2: Mike and Mike. Mike and Kyle differed a little bit.
- 1:12Speaker 2: But I'll what I would tell you Mike is a
- 1:15Speaker 2: couple of things. The terminology is going to change. This
- 1:17Speaker 2: is actually very important. They're going to go to the
- 1:21Speaker 2: verbage system and they're not going to run the numbered
- 1:23Speaker 2: system anymore. That the number system is one scheme and
- 1:28Speaker 2: the West Coast system is the Verbert system. So it's
- 1:31Speaker 2: it's the word system. That's a big change for Jalen
- 1:34Speaker 2: Hurts and the players. They have to learn that. So
- 1:36Speaker 2: you know, as I've told our Patreon folks, no matter
- 1:39Speaker 2: what reports you see out there, you know, if the
- 1:41Speaker 2: Eagles offense doesn't look good in OTA's I would not
- 1:44Speaker 2: worry about it one bit. It doesn't matter. It doesn't
- 1:47Speaker 2: matter once they get to training camp and get through it.
- 1:49Speaker 2: So it's a West Coast scheme. The players have to learn,
- 1:53Speaker 2: the quarterback has to learn it. And one thing you're
- 1:56Speaker 2: going to hear, and if you listen to our depth
- 1:57Speaker 2: chart series, our intel series on their entire offense, we're
- 2:01Speaker 2: doing it by position the tight end one drop today,
- 2:05Speaker 2: which was a lot of fun. The offensive line one
- 2:08Speaker 2: when we go re guard centers and tackles, that drops Monday.
- 2:12Speaker 2: There's so many new coaches Mike got offense. They've got
- 2:14Speaker 2: to learn these players. Like it's one thing to watch tape,
- 2:17Speaker 2: but a lot of these new coaches have not been
- 2:18Speaker 2: around these players. So there's a lot that they have
- 2:20Speaker 2: to get used to.
- 2:22Speaker 1: Yeah, so for you know, we haven't seen the West
- 2:24Speaker 1: Coast system here in Philadelphia really what back to Andy.
- 2:28Speaker 2: I guess it was the last time, well, Doug Peterson
- 2:31Speaker 2: ran a spread West Coast I was told it was
- 2:33Speaker 2: twenty twenties is last year. But Andy and Doug different
- 2:37Speaker 2: in terms of how they sold personnel groupings, and he's
- 2:39Speaker 2: kind of evolved from the Mike home grind offense, which
- 2:42Speaker 2: is obviously Bill Walsh. Every disciple of the West Coast
- 2:46Speaker 2: has his own version of it, like the Fangio disciples.
- 2:50Speaker 2: Not all of them run at the same The philosophy
- 2:51Speaker 2: is the same heavy zone that will not change very
- 2:54Speaker 2: little man coverage, but how they deploy it, how they
- 2:57Speaker 2: use personnels different, And plus you have to play your personnel.
- 3:00Speaker 2: You can't only do what you want to do. It's
- 3:02Speaker 2: what's going to work. And Mike, the one thing that
- 3:06Speaker 2: folks should understand is McVeigh and Shanning. By the way,
- 3:11Speaker 2: Kyle and John McVay, they worked together with the Commandos
- 3:15Speaker 2: many years ago before they became head coaches. They still
- 3:18Speaker 2: believe in the running game, this scheme, and now we
- 3:21Speaker 2: know that they've added a lot of talent in terms
- 3:24Speaker 2: of the past game, it's still going to start and
- 3:27Speaker 2: the foundation is going to be the running game. And plus,
- 3:31Speaker 2: when you have sa Quon Barkley, you have no choice. Now.
- 3:34Speaker 2: I know some people will say, well, how they were
- 3:36Speaker 2: terrible blocking for the run. The hope is, let's say
- 3:40Speaker 2: it's not that bad, Like these guys are healthier, some
- 3:43Speaker 2: guys got surgery, rehab rest. How could it be any
- 3:48Speaker 2: worse for the run game. So, Mike, it's going to
- 3:49Speaker 2: start with the run game. In the past game will
- 3:51Speaker 2: work off of that.
- 3:51Speaker 1: Yeah, So you know, when you take a look at
- 3:53Speaker 1: what it looks like. As we mentioned, he did not
- 3:55Speaker 1: like to run the ball all that much when he
- 3:57Speaker 1: was here, Right, So the run pass ratio, what do
- 4:01Speaker 1: we anticipate with Sean Manyon?
- 4:04Speaker 2: All right, So Mike and I talked to former Eagles
- 4:07Speaker 2: president Joe Banner about this many times, so Andy and Joe,
- 4:12Speaker 2: and one of the big reasons why Andy got the
- 4:14Speaker 2: job amongst the list and why what they liked so
- 4:17Speaker 2: much about Andy is he believed in the forward pass.
- 4:20Speaker 2: He believed then, not as much now, and he's kind
- 4:23Speaker 2: of it's kind of gone. He's been more willing to
- 4:27Speaker 2: run it. But when he was with the Eagles, as
- 4:28Speaker 2: you mentioned, it would always start with the pass game.
- 4:31Speaker 2: They would pass the ball way more than they ran
- 4:33Speaker 2: in the first half of games, which analytically, going back
- 4:35Speaker 2: to the sixties, the more you throw it in the
- 4:38Speaker 2: first half then run it, it just gives you a
- 4:41Speaker 2: better chance to win because defenses are not set up
- 4:44Speaker 2: to they're going to play you against the run more
- 4:47Speaker 2: in the first half. There are a lot of reasons
- 4:49Speaker 2: for it, Mike now, but there's an adjustment to it
- 4:54Speaker 2: you have to look at. And this is where Howie
- 4:56Speaker 2: Rosemond has gotten so good since he really turned his
- 4:59Speaker 2: care around twenty twenty one. They were more willing to
- 5:03Speaker 2: change up what their philosophy is and morph into something
- 5:06Speaker 2: else that's they needed to. I mean, who saw them
- 5:09Speaker 2: siding Saquon Barklay and then becoming a running team. Well
- 5:11Speaker 2: they did, and they one of the best running games
- 5:14Speaker 2: in NFL history in twenty twenty four, and they were
- 5:16Speaker 2: the only NFL team to run the ball more than
- 5:19Speaker 2: they passed it. Like that's you know, you just don't
- 5:22Speaker 2: see that. The Ravens were close, but they didn't. So overall, Mike,
- 5:28Speaker 2: this is going to be a run This is gonna
- 5:29Speaker 2: be a running team. It doesn't mean they won't pass it.
- 5:32Speaker 2: And then the next question is, Okay, so they've added
- 5:35Speaker 2: so much talent at receiver and tight end, what's it
- 5:39Speaker 2: going to be? Is it going to be a eleven
- 5:41Speaker 2: personnel team three receivers, won back, one tight end or
- 5:44Speaker 2: is it going to be more twelve personnel, two tight ends,
- 5:49Speaker 2: two receivers in one running back. That's that's going to
- 5:52Speaker 2: be the challenge. I have a philosophy on it of
- 5:55Speaker 2: what I've heard. But the thing is, Mike and we
- 5:58Speaker 2: talk about this on on I think Monday Show and
- 6:01Speaker 2: also Today's show, which you can get on any podcasting platform.
- 6:04Speaker 2: Because they've got although they're going to trade a J. Brown,
- 6:06Speaker 2: they've got Smith, they got mackay Lemon, Don Kavian Wicks,
- 6:09Speaker 2: who played in this offense, the West Coast offense before
- 6:13Speaker 2: Hylod Brown, who could run. Returning Garius Cooper was a
- 6:15Speaker 2: good story of development. Johnny Wilson, if he's available, he's
- 6:19Speaker 2: on the team. He'll be their block. And they got
- 6:22Speaker 2: Stours as a freak athlete who could line up with
- 6:24Speaker 2: the exposition move from his ted endisision if they need
- 6:27Speaker 2: him to mike. They've got this stability to morph into
- 6:30Speaker 2: whatever they want on offense.
- 6:32Speaker 1: Well, you know, I was going to say, you look
- 6:33Speaker 1: at what they have right now. Obviously you mentioned Aj
- 6:36Speaker 1: probably not going to be here. You know, do they
- 6:40Speaker 1: have enough without him or do they need to look
- 6:43Speaker 1: to add another receiver.
- 6:45Speaker 2: No, they're good again, So the way we see it,
- 6:47Speaker 2: and we dropped this in the Receiver Show, which I
- 6:49Speaker 2: believe dropped on Thursday. So you've got Smith. Let's say
- 6:57Speaker 2: they come out in a base offense. Yeah, in twelve
- 6:59Speaker 2: personel you got Davante Smith and McKayle Lemon. Right now,
- 7:04Speaker 2: Smith is your Z he could play outside. Lemon will
- 7:07Speaker 2: be your inside receiver when they go eleven personnel, Dantavian
- 7:11Speaker 2: Wicks is the X receiver. Smith is the Z. Lemon
- 7:15Speaker 2: is the is the is the y receiver the inside receiver.
- 7:20Speaker 2: They also could flip flop. Davante Davonte could be the
- 7:24Speaker 2: could play the inside position. McKay Lemon could be the
- 7:26Speaker 2: move receiver. He can't play truly outside. He won't win.
- 7:30Speaker 2: That's the way clubs I spoke with about Lemon, and
- 7:32Speaker 2: many said the same thing. They just don't see him
- 7:34Speaker 2: winning as a true outside receiver. You have to reduce him,
- 7:37Speaker 2: which means you start him three quarters outside and you
- 7:39Speaker 2: move him more inside to help him get freed up.
- 7:42Speaker 2: And then Hollywood Brown, Mike, when they're an eleven personnel
- 7:47Speaker 2: you could have You could go with what we call
- 7:49Speaker 2: the speed package, Hollywood Brown, Davante Smith, Eli Stowers, Dallas Goddard.
- 7:56Speaker 2: And then this is kind of comical. He won't be
- 7:58Speaker 2: with the team almost certainly. But you imagine Ifquas Watkins
- 8:01Speaker 2: made the team. He could run. Why is he still
- 8:04Speaker 2: in the league? Mic?
- 8:05Speaker 1: He can run, Yes, he can run. Hollywood Brown, he
- 8:09Speaker 1: can run. But what about the quality? So it goes
- 8:12Speaker 1: to the quality of depth on the offense. How many
- 8:15Speaker 1: you know, how deep are they at wide receiver? And
- 8:17Speaker 1: Jeff and I talked about even running back the other day.
- 8:20Speaker 2: All right, So we also did a running back part.
- 8:22Speaker 2: So I'm gonna I'm gonna, I'm gonna give you a
- 8:23Speaker 2: sort of a cliff Notes version. So the depth ed
- 8:26Speaker 2: receiver potentially should be very good without I. J. Brown,
- 8:29Speaker 2: Smith and Lemon interchangeable in terms of inside or outside
- 8:33Speaker 2: Wicks could play. He has actually line up inside and
- 8:38Speaker 2: he's a miss. He's just under sixth two. He's a
- 8:40Speaker 2: big six one three quarters. By the way, Hollywood Brown
- 8:42Speaker 2: Darius Cooper, who could play the guys a quality backup
- 8:46Speaker 2: receiver and logit Moore. I didn't mention him, Mike. I
- 8:50Speaker 2: mean he's a long shot, true long shot. He could
- 8:53Speaker 2: play busy or the slap position. So they're gonna be
- 8:55Speaker 2: good there. Let's get the tight end. Now it's insane.
- 8:59Speaker 2: I mean they have eight tight ends of the roster.
- 9:01Speaker 2: They'll keep three or four, probably four. The locks are
- 9:04Speaker 2: Goddard and Stours. That if Johnny Munk could still play
- 9:07Speaker 2: at thirty one years old, remember the Jacksonville Dyvers cut him.
- 9:11Speaker 2: He's here specifically because the West Coast offense and the
- 9:14Speaker 2: OC was with him in Minnesota. Munt will be their
- 9:17Speaker 2: backup white and end. They're in line blocker. Then the
- 9:19Speaker 2: question is Kyle Kuterra on the roster or our dark
- 9:24Speaker 2: horse and at day Kwon Wright he's our deep sleeper,
- 9:28Speaker 2: Mike da Kwon Wright is that guy who's really talented
- 9:31Speaker 2: out of Mississippi. He did have a bad right shoulder
- 9:35Speaker 2: last season, that's concerning. He's got a show he can block.
- 9:38Speaker 2: They give him a little bit of guaranteed money. He
- 9:41Speaker 2: is like if you looked at sleeper players, he's one
- 9:45Speaker 2: of my top guys on this roster offensive defense. Yeah,
- 9:48Speaker 2: he's that guy that we're going to talk more about
- 9:51Speaker 2: in training camp. But they've got this ability, Mike, and
- 9:55Speaker 2: they've got depth, like they have depth at tight end
- 9:59Speaker 2: between God or Alkatara. Who's they have to use if
- 10:01Speaker 2: he's on the roster, Mic And look, the tape showed it,
- 10:05Speaker 2: our information showed it. They completely misused Grank Calcultara. Remember
- 10:10Speaker 2: the reporters would ask Sirianne and like, why do you
- 10:13Speaker 2: keep using him as an inline tight end And never
- 10:16Speaker 2: would answer the question directly. It would bother the hell
- 10:18Speaker 2: out of me. Terrible coaching, Mike. Now, Eli Stowers, Look,
- 10:22Speaker 2: he's a move tight end. He can't block right now,
- 10:25Speaker 2: He's got a show he can be on the football field.
- 10:27Speaker 2: But the good coaching is you don't ask to do
- 10:30Speaker 2: things he can't do. Keep them on the move, and
- 10:32Speaker 2: that's how we could cause interference.
- 10:34Speaker 1: And then Jeff and I talked a little bit about this,
- 10:36Speaker 1: you know, in you know twenty twenty two, they tried
- 10:39Speaker 1: to throw a lot. Then they pivot to a running
- 10:41Speaker 1: team that worked out. So the offensive line plays a
- 10:45Speaker 1: big role in all this is too like if this
- 10:47Speaker 1: you know, past game or West Coast or whatever you
- 10:51Speaker 1: want to call it doesn't work out, I don't know
- 10:54Speaker 1: what they can pivot to this time around.
- 10:56Speaker 2: Well, the thing is, you can't like you. It was
- 10:59Speaker 2: always Syrian offense and it was never a Syrianna's offense.
- 11:04Speaker 2: Is a combine scheme. It was never a West Coast.
- 11:08Speaker 2: It was timing base, but it wasn't really true West Coast.
- 11:11Speaker 2: It was at North Turner. It was a North Turner
- 11:14Speaker 2: system who we had some roots in. So I think,
- 11:18Speaker 2: right now, Mike, it'll start with a run if it's
- 11:21Speaker 2: not working. It's not like you go back to Syrianny scheme.
- 11:24Speaker 2: If you did, then Sean Manning would not be calling
- 11:26Speaker 2: the place anymore. He wouldn't be the offensive coordinator. That
- 11:28Speaker 2: won't work. That's not what they're looking to do. That's
- 11:31Speaker 2: not what they're thinking. Where their thought process. But it'll
- 11:33Speaker 2: start with the run game. They're going to have that
- 11:35Speaker 2: now as we get finished here, Mike Bond, Barkley, it's Bigsby,
- 11:40Speaker 2: it's Shipley. Now. Shipley to me, he's got more juice
- 11:43Speaker 2: than Bixby. Bigsby, though, is explosive in his own way.
- 11:47Speaker 2: Shipley's got better straight line speed. The coaches have to
- 11:50Speaker 2: do a better job of figuring out how to get
- 11:52Speaker 2: him on the football field. He's not as physical as
- 11:54Speaker 2: Bigsby or Barkley. He's not as strong physically. It's a problem.
- 11:58Speaker 2: I understand. That's that's what we were told. But he's
- 12:01Speaker 2: got a little bit of juice there. This is his
- 12:04Speaker 2: third years for year rookie deal. He's got to give
- 12:06Speaker 2: them more. They he was a little bit underwhelming last season.
- 12:08Speaker 1: All Right, there's a good look at what you might
- 12:11Speaker 1: expect from this Eagles really new look offense. It's not
- 12:15Speaker 1: gonna look like anything going back to you know, and
- 12:18Speaker 1: maybe a Peterson type of offense, but even further back
- 12:21Speaker 1: to possibly Andy Moore West Coast style we'll see, we'll
- 12:25Speaker 1: all see all get underway coming up when the mini
- 12:28Speaker 1: camps get underway here in a couple of weeks. So
- 12:30Speaker 1: what's that two weeks from now the mini camp, Adam, Yes.
- 12:33Speaker 2: Yeah, then you got the mandatory camp, which is uh,
- 12:37Speaker 2: that's when that's when you know it's serious, because Mike,
- 12:40Speaker 2: it's those are the last practices before training camp and
- 12:43Speaker 2: you're trying to set a good impression for everybody goes
- 12:46Speaker 2: on vacation. And I could tell you the earth. You
- 12:49Speaker 2: always see the urgency with the rookies. They know it
- 12:53Speaker 2: like because that the veterans have to be there and
- 12:56Speaker 2: they know that it's their last chance. And I always
- 12:58Speaker 2: like watching those practices.
- 13:00Speaker 1: All right, we will of course be all over those
- 13:02Speaker 1: practices and more here on football for Adam Kaplan. Have
- 13:05Speaker 1: a good weekend, man. There is Adam Kaplan football for
