- 0:01SPEAKER_00: Hello and welcome to T-Bone Sports.
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: One fan all game podcast number twelve.
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: Week one of the NFL season is finally in the books after a Monday night.
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: Game between the Denver Broncos and the Kansas City Chiefs.
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: Very disappointing game for the Broncos.
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: You know, just weren't able to really get a lot going.
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: You know, they the very first drive was interception, three plays in by Bo Nicks, and the Chiefs were able to turn around, march right down the field, and score.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: You know, the first drive, they pretty the Chiefs pretty much ran the ball.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: The Broncos just couldn't make adjustments and stop them.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: You know, there were a couple penalties that should have been called that obviously didn't get called.
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: But again, you know, conspiracy theorists people will say then, you know, the Chiefs are getting away with holding again.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: There was one on the touchdown by Mahomes where Travis Kelsey was obviously holding, had his entire arm wrapped around the player, and he was unable to make the tackle over Patrick Mahomes and was able to dive into the end zone.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: You know, even the analysts and everybody said that should have been a hole, but oh, you know, it's it's difficult for the refs to see.
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: There's refs right there on on, you know, there seeing it on on the goal line and in the back, and just doesn't get called, and and the head referee should have been able to see it.
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: But neither here nor there, the second drive the Broncos are able to drive down the field and and make some good plays and adjust and get get a touchdown and go tie the game.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: And it just all around, it just was not a good game.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: Second half starts, Broncos are down by seven, and you know, the Chiefs drive right down the field again and and score very, very quickly.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: You know, they're they're you know, he wasn't Mahomes just had a hard time passing the ball the first half.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: Nine yards is the longest pass play.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: You know, the Broncos pass rush definitely got got to him and and made it difficult for him to to to throw the ball, but their running game with Walker and everyone else was just superb, and they were able to to really run the ball effectively over over the Broncos.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: And and you can see where missing Jonathan Cooper and and having another big defensive guy in there just where that you know where that hole is in the defense, and hopefully he gets off the commissioner's exemplus here soon, or we know here soon how many games he's gonna be suspended for.
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: Play a little press conference of Sean Payton after the game and what adjustments need to be made.
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: Obviously.
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: So, you know, just just a bad game all around for the Broncos, but play a quick press conference of Sean Payton after the game and what adjustments need to be made.
- 3:04SPEAKER_03: Not a good evening.
- 3:06SPEAKER_03: Didn't do a lot well at all in the game, you know, so we'll have a look at the tape tomorrow, but I felt like yeah, I mean, all the key factors, uh, they rushed the ball well, we didn't.
- 3:19SPEAKER_03: You know, that starts with me, that starts with our coaching staff.
- 3:25SPEAKER_03: I thought they won really in every phase.
- 3:26SPEAKER_03: Uh any questions?
- 3:28SPEAKER_02: First of all, I thought that's the way it was.
- 3:32SPEAKER_03: I thought there were a number of places we have to look.
- 3:36SPEAKER_03: You know, our third down numbers weren't good, our rushing numbers weren't good.
- 3:40SPEAKER_03: Pick your spot.
- 3:42SPEAKER_03: Does it kind of make it even a game plan initially?
- 3:46SPEAKER_04: It was more rushing.
- 3:48SPEAKER_03: Yeah, look, some of the some of the rushing attempts became RPOs.
- 3:53SPEAKER_03: But we'll have a chance to watch it tomorrow.
- 3:56SPEAKER_08: Does it make it anything even more disappointing?
- 3:58SPEAKER_08: I mean, you guys anticipated that we're gonna run Kenneth Walker so much as they take the rush.
- 4:03SPEAKER_03: Yeah, we didn't we we yeah, we look at the time of possession, we we put our defense in some short fields, but collectively, you know, we didn't tackle well enough.
- 4:12SPEAKER_03: Then the game became one-dimensional.
- 4:15SPEAKER_03: Really the antithesis of how you beat a good team on the road.
- 4:19SPEAKER_03: It's that simple.
- 4:20SPEAKER_04: So when it comes to the miss attack, what not on defensive side is that something that struggles early in the season?
- 4:27SPEAKER_03: Yeah, uh not like that though.
- 4:28SPEAKER_03: No, I wouldn't say that.
- 4:31SPEAKER_04: So what was it like that you personally give it a way to call it process or process?
- 4:39SPEAKER_03: Yeah, uh look, it was is just as a head coach always, whether you're calling the plays or you're not, you know, it's regardless of who's calling the players.
- 4:47SPEAKER_03: When when you have a game like that and you're the head coach, you know, it's frustrating, it's disappointing.
- 4:53SPEAKER_03: And I don't know that the feeling is any different whether you're calling him or not.
- 4:59SPEAKER_03: Honestly.
- 4:59SPEAKER_05: Did Bo get sped up?
- 5:01SPEAKER_05: I mean, obviously he throws the early pick, but did you see him sped up?
- 5:04SPEAKER_05: I don't know what to say.
- 5:05SPEAKER_03: We'll see it on tape, but you know a lot of long yardage, a lot of throws, not enough runs.
- 5:12SPEAKER_03: Sean, do you point to what do you think that water roll?
- 5:15SPEAKER_03: Well, it looked the time of possession, the field position, and then you know, the big run was the one that hurt.
- 5:22SPEAKER_03: You know, bounces outside.
- 5:23SPEAKER_03: If we don't set an edge, we miss a tackle.
- 5:27SPEAKER_03: That that one hurt.
- 5:28SPEAKER_04: You know, that was I don't have any yards, but you know, you had a lot on physical, you have one of the more physical training camps.
- 5:37SPEAKER_06: Come out and miss so many tackles like that.
- 5:40SPEAKER_03: It was uh particularly, you know, what do you Yeah, look we'll look at the technique, we'll look at I I I understand the question.
- 5:49SPEAKER_03: Again, I I didn't like the time of possession.
- 5:51SPEAKER_03: I didn't like how that game began and how it unfolded early.
- 5:56SPEAKER_04: We'll look at all those things.
- 5:59SPEAKER_04: Yeah, like and we went backwards.
- 6:03SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 6:11SPEAKER_03: Yeah, well when you when you think about it, number one, Patrick's super smart, the ball's coming out, you know, some quick screens, touchdown on one of them, hot on one of them, you know.
- 6:21SPEAKER_03: So you know, they weren't gonna just sit there with him in the pocket on seven step drops.
- 6:27SPEAKER_03: And understandably so.
- 6:29SPEAKER_03: And so they had a good plan.
- 6:31SPEAKER_03: Ball was coming out fast.
- 6:33SPEAKER_03: And yeah.
- 6:40SPEAKER_03: It was thief, you know, uh and corner jumped inside with good technique and you know, almost played right underneath it.
- 6:48SPEAKER_03: I watch it on film though, but I'm pretty sure it was a four-man rusher.
- 6:52SPEAKER_02: Well, yeah, I guess it's the second drive, yeah, yeah, the touchdown drive, but just when you don't like you talk a lot about the first first down, make it more difficult to get Jill involved sort of stout as he sort of get it.
- 7:04SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean look, you sometimes you have openers and they and they go well, but other times, you know, you gotta regroup.
- 7:10SPEAKER_03: So we'll have a chance to evaluate all that.
- 7:17SPEAKER_03: Kinda.
- 7:18SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I think I think all the word coming out of their camp was a commitment under center, the running back in the home position.
- 7:25SPEAKER_03: And and that's gonna be, you know, something that that will help them offensively, and that's gotta be something that we're we're better at as well.
- 7:34SPEAKER_02: How do you balance the processing and learning?
- 7:36SPEAKER_03: We have to have tomorrow.
- 7:37SPEAKER_03: Like, you know, tomorrow we can't escape.
- 7:39SPEAKER_03: You know, the the prop you know, being able to put this game to honestly watch it collectively, you know, as a team, as coaches, and then then it becomes a little bit more mental early early in the week.
- 7:53SPEAKER_04: You were surprised at all by their focus on the running game?
- 7:56SPEAKER_03: No, I think all the clips just kept talking, you know, then they you know, when you invest that much money in a player from the Super Bowl champion, draft one, uh we we we we kind of felt like they were gonna be under center more.
- 8:09SPEAKER_03: And and they they did effectively.
- 8:15SPEAKER_02: How do you sort of get going away?
- 8:19SPEAKER_03: I think just no different than a player, you know, just uh evaluating the the first the first quarter of the the game and then uh you know making the making the corrections and and learning.
- 8:30SPEAKER_02: What's your intervention on a situation like this the first half relative to no?
- 8:39SPEAKER_03: I mean look we're we're in the midst of the game, you know, there's certain things you look you're looking at.
- 8:45SPEAKER_03: It's a little bit more difficult in the flow of the game and so respectfully just there's you know, you you're getting the plays in.
- 8:52SPEAKER_03: We had two one delay and then one timeout we had to use, but we'll we'll we'll get better there.
- 8:58SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 9:06SPEAKER_03: I no, I just well, I just know that I was the odd man out.
- 9:10SPEAKER_03: I never heard anything about it, and so it was never came to anything.
- 9:13SPEAKER_03: I was only total told about it later, so yeah, I didn't.
- 9:18SPEAKER_03: I was just like you guys.
- 9:22SPEAKER_00: So, you know, you can obviously tell he is disappointed in the outcome of the game.
- 9:29SPEAKER_00: He obviously knew that he didn't get the guys ready well enough.
- 9:33SPEAKER_00: None of the coaches really did in in in in that there, you know, and like he said, you know, the Chiefs that we they knew going in that the the Chiefs are gonna run the ball a lot, and the Broncos just couldn't adjust.
- 9:44SPEAKER_00: And tough way to start the season, but I think a lot of us kind of figured out that this is what it was gonna be, and you know, there's still 16 more games to go, and and you know, tough way to to start the season with a division loss, but you know, you you play them again here in a few weeks and you play them at home, and and hopefully you can split this series and and see what happens, you know.
- 10:07SPEAKER_00: And and you know, Sunday they they play you know the Jacksonville Jaguars, they're coming off a win and you know, in week one.
- 10:17SPEAKER_00: So just a quick recap of week one.
- 10:20SPEAKER_00: Obviously, we know Saints or Seahawks, Patriots played Wednesday night.
- 10:25SPEAKER_00: Seahawks won 13-10.
- 10:27SPEAKER_00: Then Thursday night we had the 49ers and LA Rams, which a lot of people thought the LA Rams would just torch and blow out the 49ers, and 49ers won 27 to 7.
- 10:43SPEAKER_00: You know, the the Rams just couldn't get anything going and just struggled, and a lot of it has to do with, and there's still people talking about this, and and I'll do a quick thing on it.
- 10:53SPEAKER_00: When the Rams decided to fly out 16 hours before kickoff, unlike the the 49ers who were there for a week to adjust to the time difference after going over the the timeline, the date timeline, and you know, they were there, they were ready, they were fresh, it just looked like you know the Rams were tired and still lagging and still had jet lag and just couldn't get anything going.
- 11:18SPEAKER_00: And then Bears put up 59 points over the Panthers.
- 11:22SPEAKER_00: You know, again, the Panthers are a team that's gonna struggle.
- 11:26SPEAKER_00: The Ravens beat the Indianapolis Colts, the Steelers beat the Falcons 20-13, Ravens beat the Colts 41-23, Bears won 59-37, Browns in Jacksonville, Jacksonville won 24 34-10.
- 11:46SPEAKER_00: Obviously, we know they're the the the Browns aren't gonna do anything all year.
- 11:50SPEAKER_00: Bengals beat the Buccaneers 33-27.
- 11:53SPEAKER_00: The Jets finally won their first game.
- 11:55SPEAKER_00: 23-10.
- 11:57SPEAKER_00: Play the Titans again, a team that struggles.
- 12:00SPEAKER_00: The Saints and Lions went into overtime with the Lions winning by one.
- 12:05SPEAKER_00: You know, that was a good game.
- 12:06SPEAKER_00: That game went into overtime.
- 12:07SPEAKER_00: The Lions scored a touchdown, and with the new rules, you know, the Saints get a chance to to drive and score.
- 12:14SPEAKER_00: They scored a touchdown, they decided to try to go for two to win the game.
- 12:18SPEAKER_00: You know, was it a big risk?
- 12:19SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 12:19SPEAKER_00: Was it worth doing?
- 12:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 12:26SPEAKER_00: You you sit there, you can you still have you know a minute and a half left in in overtime.
- 12:33SPEAKER_00: Would have giv if you would have tied it, you would have given you know the the the Lions a chance to go down, score a field goal, and you know, win the game.
- 12:42SPEAKER_00: You still would have given you know that opportunity if you would have won, but it would have been a lot harder.
- 12:47SPEAKER_00: I've you know.
- 12:48SPEAKER_00: Bills beat the Texans 36-31.
- 12:53SPEAKER_00: Cardinals beat the Chargers 26-14, Vikings beat the Packers 39-22, Raiders beat the Dolphins 27-13, Eagles beat the Commanders 24-22, the Cowboys lost to the Giants 28-20, and obviously the Chiefs beat the Broncos Monday night 31-10.
- 13:20SPEAKER_00: So week one in the books for the NFL, you know, and and week two starts here on Thursday between the Bills and Detroit Lions, and the Bills will be opening up their new stadium, Hallmark, in Buffalo on Thursday night, so that'll be pretty cool, pretty cool to see in.
- 13:36SPEAKER_00: And that should be a really good game.
- 13:37SPEAKER_00: I think that's another game that, you know, the Bills and Lions, you know, Josh Allen is good, and and you know, he he'll he'll lead his team probably to another victory.
- 13:46SPEAKER_00: I do see, you know, the Bills winning that game.
- 13:51SPEAKER_00: Couple more things from, you know, the you know, the the Broncos Charger or Broncos Chiefs game.
- 14:01SPEAKER_00: Again, thank you to Denver Broncos.com for all these sound bites.
- 14:07SPEAKER_00: But here's a quick one of the Bonex 19-yard touchdown to Evan Ingram, which tied the game for the Broncos.
- 14:29SPEAKER_04: Great answer by the third-year quarterback lonex! And Evan Ingram, the 32-year-old tight end.
- 14:41SPEAKER_04: Good from 19 yards out.
- 14:44SPEAKER_04: Well, a nice design.
- 14:45SPEAKER_00: They put Waddle in the back of the So great, you know, great, great job there for the Broncos, you know, to to score that, you know, right there and and tie that game after allowing the Chiefs to drive down the field.
- 14:59SPEAKER_00: And and it just like I said, it was it was a tough game for the Broncos, you know, and and it was just tough to see the loss.
- 15:10SPEAKER_00: One more little thing here, you know, and Bryant had a really good game.
- 15:14SPEAKER_00: He had some good catches, and and you know, he definitely is is gonna be you know moving up in the on the chart.
- 15:21SPEAKER_00: And you know, Franklin didn't really get a lot of opportunity, you know, and just Corland Sutton had some drops and just wasn't able to get open.
- 15:28SPEAKER_00: And you know, they really weren't able to utilize Waddle like I think they wanted to, but you know, week one and and we'll see where where it goes on week two, quick press conference of Bonex after the loss on week one.
- 15:49SPEAKER_04: Yes!
- 15:53SPEAKER_07: When you look back at that first drive, obviously you have a lot of time to prepare for that first in the game.
- 15:59SPEAKER_07: What happens when there?
- 16:00SPEAKER_07: I feel like we guys might be back in the thing with the time drive out of set of tone where you guys looked out the same option.
- 16:07SPEAKER_01: Well, I mean, we just got in long yards with that first down sack.
- 16:10SPEAKER_01: They brought corner cat with uh pressure and we didn't quite get to you know the hot.
- 16:15SPEAKER_01: But I mean, once you get to second and long, you get, you know, a run, get back to third and long, and then they played lurk and the corner made a really good playoff set, sort of felt like he guessed right on the route and did a really good job, made a really good play for a rookie.
- 16:30SPEAKER_01: So I thought we responded well after that in the first half, but just couldn't get back really fully into the game.
- 16:37SPEAKER_01: You guys have always pretty much played close games.
- 16:42SPEAKER_01: Well, when you give a good team a lot of chances and when you give a good team shortfield, long-yarded situations on third down, a good team like that's gonna exploit it and just had way too many penalties, way too many negative plays, turnovers, put our defense in bad spots.
- 16:56SPEAKER_01: And no, honestly, just from a I guess it you know, whole offense, whole team, we just didn't play very good.
- 17:04SPEAKER_06: Well, oh, I think it was like 24 days since you guys played against the Packers, real, real football.
- 17:11SPEAKER_06: I mean, were you guys it seemed like you're a little rusty or anything like that for this for this game?
- 17:18SPEAKER_06: Not really.
- 17:20SPEAKER_01: What what good comes out of it?
- 17:22SPEAKER_01: That's a great question.
- 17:24SPEAKER_01: I think you learn how important it is one to not kill yourself.
- 17:29SPEAKER_01: That goes without saying, but when you do that, you know, in a game like today, it just sort of, you know, phrases that a little higher.
- 17:37SPEAKER_01: And I just felt like it penalty after penalty after penalty.
- 17:41SPEAKER_01: We just, you know, nobody has good plays to call when you're at second and long and third and long.
- 17:47SPEAKER_01: I mean, the play sheet is very small, and we just didn't put anybody in a good spot today.
- 17:52SPEAKER_01: We really didn't.
- 17:53SPEAKER_07: Do you feel in a way that you know David Squad first game calling plays, maybe let him down a little bit with the way the offense is executed?
- 18:00SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 18:01SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 18:01SPEAKER_01: I think the players did not make it easy on him today.
- 18:04SPEAKER_01: Pretty pitiful, actually, but he was, you know, true to me in the headset, he treated it like, you know, he was he was a pro with it.
- 18:13SPEAKER_01: He was like, hey, next play, here we go, you got this.
- 18:15SPEAKER_01: He shot it with conviction.
- 18:17SPEAKER_01: I thought he really, I mean, we called exactly what we prepared for and what we wanted to get to.
- 18:22SPEAKER_01: And we just didn't execute, and then we were behind, and just literally, I don't think we did a whole lot of good consistently enough to win the game at all.
- 18:33SPEAKER_01: Well, granted, you don't think it's the interception, you guys get uh how much of a missed opportunity instead of well it was huge.
- 18:40SPEAKER_01: That yeah, that that changes the game.
- 18:41SPEAKER_01: They took first interception, scored a touchdown.
- 18:44SPEAKER_01: We take an interception, we literally go backwards and have to settle with a field goal, and you just you can't win games like that.
- 18:51SPEAKER_01: Tough reminder of how this team.
- 18:56SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 18:56SPEAKER_01: Again, especially against a a really good team.
- 18:58SPEAKER_01: And like I said, you don't play good against a good team, and they're gonna beat you pretty good.
- 19:03SPEAKER_01: And, you know, we can, you know, act like all we want, but they're still the Chiefs, they're still a really good football team.
- 19:12SPEAKER_01: And all the new guys acted like, you know, the new guys they had acted like they've been playing in that system for years and just did exactly what the old Chiefs have been doing.
- 19:21SPEAKER_01: So, you know, you gotta give them credit and they wore us out today.
- 19:25SPEAKER_02: What is out to say what went for Davis that did not go anyway he, I'm sure it wanted his first time.
- 19:29SPEAKER_02: Like, how do you think you've been around a long time?
- 19:31SPEAKER_02: How do you think he sort of responds to this?
- 19:34SPEAKER_01: Exactly like he would have responded with a win.
- 19:36SPEAKER_01: I think he would have acted the same way with a win.
- 19:39SPEAKER_01: He would have said it wasn't good enough, and we gotta get back and find ways to continue to go to next week.
- 19:43SPEAKER_01: And you know, I think he's gonna move on really well.
- 19:47SPEAKER_09: Well, we mount for a few more for both.
- 19:48SPEAKER_09: Yeah, we know how excited you were to get back on the field to play this first game.
- 19:51SPEAKER_09: So as excited as you were to kind of put into words how frustrating it is to have that uh Yeah, I uh I think we just let ourselves down.
- 19:59SPEAKER_01: I think it's more disappointing than frustrating.
- 20:01SPEAKER_01: Uh I'm not, you know, necessarily flipped with rage right now.
- 20:04SPEAKER_01: It's just sort of we let ourselves down and we shot ourselves in the foot and literally gave ourselves no chance to succeed today and made it easier for them.
- 20:12SPEAKER_01: Point point, period.
- 20:13SPEAKER_01: And we know we have to be better.
- 20:15SPEAKER_01: There's a lot of guys in that locker room that are you know gonna take ownership and gonna be better.
- 20:19SPEAKER_01: And you know, it starts with me, it starts with our offense, and we're gonna be better, and we have to, you know, we don't have a choice.
- 20:24SPEAKER_01: We don't have a choice but to get better and you know, um just a nasty wake-up call today.
- 20:30SPEAKER_09: Last one and two last year, to kind of know you've been you've been in this situation before you think we'll probably get back to you because that that's something we'll yeah.
- 20:37SPEAKER_01: I mean, we know this is not gonna be the whole season for us.
- 20:42SPEAKER_01: That's the first time since Baltimore we've been, you know, be pretty handedly like that, but I think we're gonna be in games and we're gonna consistently get better.
- 20:52SPEAKER_01: And I do think today was not a good representation of us as a team.
- 20:58SPEAKER_00: So obviously, you know, Bonick's very disappointed in in the in the game and and notably well, you know.
- 21:08SPEAKER_00: The first drive, you throw an interception, you're able to come back in the second drive and and and finally score a touchdown, you're able to pick the ball off deep in their end, and like he said, you literally moved backwards and had to settle for a few goals, and though those are the only points you get all game.
- 21:23SPEAKER_00: You know, when you play good teams like the Chiefs, like the Rams, like you know, Jacksonville and the Chargers and the 49ers and these Seattle and these teams that you know are gonna be good and you're gonna have difficulty with because they're gonna give you your best shot every single week.
- 21:45SPEAKER_00: You know, they take opportunities to take turnovers and score a touchdown and and get seven points out of it.
- 21:52SPEAKER_00: But when you get a turnover, you either get three or nothing.
- 21:56SPEAKER_00: You know, three is one thing, you know, but seven is much more, you know, a much better way to take over a turnover and get a toneover and do something with.
- 22:03SPEAKER_00: But, you know, a very struggling game, week one, you know, and I I'm you know, as a Bronco fan, I'm a little disappointed, but I kind of figured this was what was gonna happen.
- 22:13SPEAKER_00: You know, we'll the Broncos will bounce back week week two and and we'll see where we can go.
- 22:18SPEAKER_00: You know, you you definitely have, like I said, you know, at the beginning of the of the season when this when this schedule came out, their first game, six games, is just a gauntlet of six games.
- 22:30SPEAKER_00: If they can go three and three in their first six games, great.
- 22:33SPEAKER_00: You know, there's still an opportunity to sit there and and play well and and win and win the division, you know.
- 22:39SPEAKER_00: It's a long season, but if if you go four and one even or five and one in the first six games, you know, great.
- 22:47SPEAKER_00: If you go four and two in the first six games, great, but it it's gonna be it's gonna be a tough year for the Broncos.
- 22:55SPEAKER_00: Their first six games are just an absolute gauntlet, and it's gonna be tough.
- 23:00SPEAKER_00: And I do hope that you know they bounce back.
