Latest / Twin Cities Territory / Twins' bats absolutely rake on 5-1 road trip; mighty Dodgers up next
Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: The Twins' bats continue to surge in Arizona as they
- 0:04Speaker 1: take two games over the weekend to finish a five
- 0:07Speaker 1: and one road trip. They are now thirty eight and
- 0:11Speaker 1: forty one and just one game out in the American
- 0:15Speaker 1: League Wildcard race, if you can call it a race.
- 0:18Speaker 1: This is Twins Cities Territory or Minnesota Twins podcast here
- 0:22Speaker 1: on the File Territory Network. I am Zach Pierce of
- 0:25Speaker 1: the Athletic, joined as always by Dan Hayes, the Athletics,
- 0:28Speaker 1: Minnesota Twins beat writer and Tyler Duffy, longtime Major League pitcher,
- 0:31Speaker 1: former Minnesota Twin guys. Heck of a road trip, heck
- 0:35Speaker 1: of way to respond after Friday's loss, a sixteen run
- 0:38Speaker 1: outburst on Saturday, and then a late rally on Sunday
- 0:42Speaker 1: to take the series in Arizona. They now come home
- 0:44Speaker 1: for a showcase series against the best team in baseball,
- 0:48Speaker 1: the LA Dodgers, sitting at thirty eight and forty one. Somehow,
- 0:52Speaker 1: still in this thing, Dan, after a strong week on
- 0:56Speaker 1: the road.
- 0:57Speaker 2: Yeah, they are currently Fangrafts has them at thirty two
- 1:01Speaker 2: point one percent chance of making the playoffs. Before the
- 1:05Speaker 2: road trip, they were at eighteen point eight percent. So
- 1:09Speaker 2: you go five to one on the road and really
- 1:12Speaker 2: you could make an argument they should have swept the
- 1:14Speaker 2: Arizona series infield defense gave it away on Friday late.
- 1:20Speaker 2: But you know, you go five to one on that
- 1:22Speaker 2: road trip, and you all of a sudden have a
- 1:25Speaker 2: one in three chance of making the playoffs. And I
- 1:28Speaker 2: think if you talk to the clubhouse, if you talk
- 1:32Speaker 2: to the four point three percenters, everybody like ownership, front office,
- 1:40Speaker 2: if you told them that here they are after seventy
- 1:42Speaker 2: nine games and are in this position where at least
- 1:45Speaker 2: the playoffs are like a possibility, I think anybody would
- 1:48Speaker 2: take it. When you think about the one hundred and
- 1:50Speaker 2: five million dollars payroll, and you know thirty one million
- 1:53Speaker 2: of that is gone to Pablo Lopez and Carlos Corea,
- 1:56Speaker 2: two players not on this roster. So you have this
- 1:59Speaker 2: seventy four million roster. Few it is if you went
- 2:03Speaker 2: into thinking that, you know, and here they are playing well,
- 2:08Speaker 2: playing some clean baseball, but also the offense being second
- 2:12Speaker 2: in the ALE and runs one run behind the Yankees
- 2:16Speaker 2: for the most run scored in ALE. Look, that's a
- 2:19Speaker 2: pretty promising spot. And you know, I mean, we're saying this,
- 2:23Speaker 2: and here come the Dodgers, and they could very easily
- 2:27Speaker 2: get their asses kicked by the Dodgers right now. But
- 2:32Speaker 2: should be a really fun, lively series, a lot of
- 2:34Speaker 2: people at the ballpark, and a good chance just to
- 2:37Speaker 2: test yourself against the best the best. I don't think
- 2:39Speaker 2: it's a fair test. They just played two good teams
- 2:42Speaker 2: on the road. The Rangers are under five hundred, but
- 2:45Speaker 2: the Diamondbacks are a good squad and they were above
- 2:48Speaker 2: five hundred. And the Twins outplayed both teams, you know,
- 2:53Speaker 2: really just the whole series or the whole road trip.
- 2:55Speaker 2: So it was a good week.
- 2:58Speaker 1: It was a nine to five loss on Friday. The
- 3:02Speaker 1: Twins jumped out to a three to one lead early
- 3:04Speaker 1: in that game before Arizona got back into it in
- 3:07Speaker 1: the middle innings and pulled away. But the Twins on Saturday,
- 3:11Speaker 1: that was That was definitely the most fun game if
- 3:14Speaker 1: you're a Twins fan, Tyler, what's it like as a
- 3:17Speaker 1: pitcher watching your team put up sixteen runs in the
- 3:19Speaker 1: first five game.
- 3:21Speaker 3: That's like I said, we were talking during that game,
- 3:23Speaker 3: and it's it's fun. Sometimes as a pitcher you're like, okay, guys,
- 3:27Speaker 3: I'm glad y'all are having fun, but I still got
- 3:29Speaker 3: to like go pitch at some point. So it's like,
- 3:32Speaker 3: you know, when you're sitting there, like your guys, you
- 3:34Speaker 3: see them throwing plios at the wall or wrapping the
- 3:36Speaker 3: arm with a towel. Like I've gone down in the
- 3:39Speaker 3: batting cages and target field before and like just thrown
- 3:42Speaker 3: into the net because it is it's a long time
- 3:44Speaker 3: to just sit. You know, some guys, especially the older guys,
- 3:48Speaker 3: have their routines to stay loose in those moments because
- 3:51Speaker 3: it's like as soon as you sit down and kind
- 3:53Speaker 3: of let your body think you're done, it's really tough
- 3:56Speaker 3: to get going. So, you know, good on Toads. I
- 3:58Speaker 3: think he gave up two after for one of the
- 4:00Speaker 3: long innings.
- 4:01Speaker 2: But other than that, I got.
- 4:02Speaker 1: To give you credit because, yeah, going into the after
- 4:05Speaker 1: the Twins score ten in the top of the fifth,
- 4:07Speaker 1: you said you indicated you were a little worried about
- 4:10Speaker 1: how long Taj had to sit. Ye, my jerk that
- 4:14Speaker 1: I am poked fun at the actual guy who played
- 4:17Speaker 1: of the three of us and said, yeah, I'm sure
- 4:18Speaker 1: he's really sweating the sixteen nothing lead and runs here
- 4:23Speaker 1: he does struggle a little bit in the fifth obviously
- 4:25Speaker 1: the Twins.
- 4:26Speaker 3: Yeah, but that's it's so big though, Like you know,
- 4:30Speaker 3: to come out and after a loss, you know, you
- 4:32Speaker 3: just swept the team to come in You're like, okay,
- 4:34Speaker 3: like let's get back on track here and just absolutely
- 4:37Speaker 3: erupt like that, Like that's such a We keep talking
- 4:39Speaker 3: about vibes like that's a ViBe's thing to happen. Like
- 4:43Speaker 3: you put up sixteen on anybody, doesn't matter who it is.
- 4:46Speaker 3: The hitters are feeling confident, their chests are up, you know,
- 4:49Speaker 3: they're feeling good, you know, and it's something to build on,
- 4:53Speaker 3: you know. They and they came back and they kept
- 4:54Speaker 3: scoring runs yesterday. You know you're gonna need the confidence
- 4:58Speaker 3: facing the team that's coming in end today.
- 5:00Speaker 2: That's that's going to be the next step.
- 5:01Speaker 3: But yeah, five and one on that road trip and
- 5:04Speaker 3: blowing up for geez on the trip where they score
- 5:06Speaker 3: fifty something runs, it's got to be in the forties
- 5:10Speaker 3: at least twenties.
- 5:10Speaker 2: A bunch of runs, twenty five in Texas and then
- 5:13Speaker 2: what made this.
- 5:14Speaker 1: Score, yeah five Arizona.
- 5:17Speaker 3: So yeah, wow, So you put up out a lot
- 5:20Speaker 3: of runs this week. So the boys are feeling good.
- 5:24Speaker 3: You know, the old fight at the backrack, so to speak.
- 5:26Speaker 3: So you know, hopefully keep that momentum roll, and that's
- 5:29Speaker 3: going to be tonight will be the big one. They
- 5:31Speaker 3: got to They got to show up and hit them
- 5:33Speaker 3: in the mouth before it gets out of hand.
- 5:34Speaker 1: Early the Twins were eleven for nineteen with runners in
- 5:39Speaker 1: scoring position in that win on Saturday. Just silly stuff.
- 5:43Speaker 1: But what was a funny quirk of the offensive outburst
- 5:47Speaker 1: after they scored ten runs in that inning and they
- 5:49Speaker 1: had scored four the inning before, and it just seemed
- 5:51Speaker 1: like they could they could do no wrong, nobody could
- 5:53Speaker 1: get them out. They then went ten innings without scoring
- 5:56Speaker 1: a run, the last four of that game and the
- 5:58Speaker 1: first six.
- 5:59Speaker 2: Of the next.
- 6:00Speaker 1: So it definitely can ebb and flow. But Dan, overall,
- 6:05Speaker 1: the bats were on fire all road trip. And I'm
- 6:09Speaker 1: going to put a list on the screen right now
- 6:10Speaker 1: if you're watching on YouTube, and you'll notice who's not
- 6:13Speaker 1: on the list our Byron Buckston or Royce Lewis, who
- 6:16Speaker 1: did not have a particularly great trip. But obviously that
- 6:19Speaker 1: part is not great for the Twins, but it's awesome
- 6:22Speaker 1: to see other guys step up when when those two
- 6:25Speaker 1: are not bringing it as much.
- 6:27Speaker 2: Yeah, Josh Bell continued, you know, Josh Bell had I
- 6:33Speaker 2: think they were down two nothing on Sunday and Josh
- 6:35Speaker 2: Bell had that pinch hit single RBI single and got
- 6:39Speaker 2: them going again. And Josh Bell has done a lot
- 6:42Speaker 2: of that on this trip, a lot of that this month.
- 6:45Speaker 2: He's had a really good month. I think his average
- 6:47Speaker 2: is at two fifty now right around that neighborhood continues
- 6:51Speaker 2: to be the team leader in RBIs. But we heard
- 6:54Speaker 2: he's a streaky guy, and he was on decent start
- 6:58Speaker 2: in April and then felt like May he went away
- 7:01Speaker 2: for a while and you know, the swing looked long.
- 7:05Speaker 2: But he's back on a good streak right now when
- 7:06Speaker 2: he's going and you've got Buckston and Lewis, and I
- 7:10Speaker 2: liked what I saw from Lewis at least in Arizona.
- 7:13Speaker 2: You know, he struck out seven times in that Ranger series,
- 7:16Speaker 2: and I told you guys that some of the guys
- 7:18Speaker 2: were talking about having a tough time seeing there. He
- 7:21Speaker 2: only struck out twice in Arizona and had a nine
- 7:24Speaker 2: to forty oh ps in that series and homered and
- 7:26Speaker 2: hit the double on Men on Friday. It almost came back.
- 7:29Speaker 2: They blew that lead. You know, the defense just gave
- 7:33Speaker 2: away so much in the fifth inning. I think it
- 7:37Speaker 2: was I can't remember, but it was like between brooks
- 7:39Speaker 2: Lee and Tristan Gray there were it felt like three
- 7:43Speaker 2: runs that were unnecessary in the middle of that game,
- 7:45Speaker 2: and like the Dinbacks had put the game away, and
- 7:49Speaker 2: then you see Belle Homer in the eighth and Royce
- 7:52Speaker 2: Lewis Homard and all of a sudden they're back in it.
- 7:54Speaker 2: And again the bullpen, there's just not enough meat there
- 7:58Speaker 2: on the bone. They were in a spot where they
- 8:01Speaker 2: had to get two out of Travis Adams and Corbyn
- 8:03Speaker 2: Carroll came through. But like you just look at the
- 8:05Speaker 2: like how they play and that they never really give in.
- 8:09Speaker 2: It's infectious and I feel like that's something you can
- 8:13Speaker 2: sense every time you walk in the clubhouse. These guys
- 8:15Speaker 2: just truly like each other and they play like it.
- 8:18Speaker 2: And for fans, it's fun to watch because there's no
- 8:22Speaker 2: point where you go, Okay, game's over, we're down seven
- 8:25Speaker 2: to one. Because that Pittsburgh series, they're down seven to one,
- 8:28Speaker 2: they came back and tied it and they lost ten
- 8:30Speaker 2: to nine that Saturday. But I mean, man, it's it's
- 8:33Speaker 2: just a been a good run for this offense. And
- 8:36Speaker 2: when you see it going like that, it's entertaining baseball.
- 8:41Speaker 1: Like I've asked you this before, Tyler or something similar.
- 8:43Speaker 1: But seventy nine games now, like we're you know, as
- 8:48Speaker 1: of Wednesday, I can no longer say it's early because
- 8:50Speaker 1: we will be officially on the back nine of the
- 8:52Speaker 1: regular season. But just a week ago we were the
- 8:57Speaker 1: team's eight games under five hundred, were thinking, Okay, they
- 9:00Speaker 1: are what we thought they were since then seven and two,
- 9:03Speaker 1: and they're kind of right there again, Like does the
- 9:06Speaker 1: team ride and die with these emotions or is it
- 9:09Speaker 1: sort of just like steady as we go?
- 9:11Speaker 2: Yeah, I think it is steady. You know.
- 9:16Speaker 3: When I was in Arlington, I think it was Dan
- 9:18Speaker 3: that had asked kind of about the trade deadline and
- 9:22Speaker 3: standings and things like that, and Chelsea made a point
- 9:25Speaker 3: to say there was only four teams above five hundred
- 9:28Speaker 3: I think in the American League at the time or
- 9:30Speaker 3: something like that. So the reality, the message probably being
- 9:34Speaker 3: sent is like, guys, just keep playing and we don't
- 9:38Speaker 3: have to win one hundred games.
- 9:39Speaker 2: We don't have to do anything.
- 9:40Speaker 3: We just have to show up and do our jobs
- 9:42Speaker 3: every day and you're gonna have a chance of the
- 9:44Speaker 3: postseason like that. That's at this point. They're playing the
- 9:48Speaker 3: way they are. They're you know, three and a half
- 9:49Speaker 3: back of the division. So there's nothing that really has
- 9:53Speaker 3: to change drastically. It's beat Cleveland in a series a
- 9:56Speaker 3: couple times and you take them down and then everybody
- 9:59Speaker 3: else kind of, you know, works sort their way behind you.
- 10:03Speaker 3: You know, there's nothing that needs to change, which I
- 10:04Speaker 3: think is a cool thing to have perspective on it.
- 10:08Speaker 2: This part.
- 10:08Speaker 3: You know, we're almost halfway. You know, you're never supposed
- 10:12Speaker 3: to be in this season this year, and here we are,
- 10:14Speaker 3: like do we buy the deadline? Do we hold pat
- 10:18Speaker 3: at the deadline? Like we're not so much worried about
- 10:20Speaker 3: the guys being gone again. It's now okay, maybe we
- 10:23Speaker 3: go get somebody or just keep our guys here, which
- 10:26Speaker 3: is huge, you know, So I think it's in that clubhouse.
- 10:30Speaker 3: It's got to be a good feeling. Especially this week
- 10:33Speaker 3: did huge things for them. You know that that's a
- 10:35Speaker 3: you go win five games on the road, ever, you know,
- 10:39Speaker 3: you're you're feeling pretty confident and positive, and you know,
- 10:42Speaker 3: I think, like I said, Chelt's he's got a good
- 10:44Speaker 3: feel for locker rooms. That's kind of what That's what
- 10:47Speaker 3: I remember most about being around him was him checking
- 10:50Speaker 3: the tires on everybody frequently. And I'm sure he's got
- 10:52Speaker 3: his coaches trying to do the same. Like it's just
- 10:55Speaker 3: he's got a good feel. You know, the guys in
- 10:57Speaker 3: there have a great group going some arroaderie building, and
- 11:01Speaker 3: you know, there's no reason why it can't be them
- 11:03Speaker 3: at this point.
- 11:04Speaker 2: I mean, they were able to absorb this loud jackass
- 11:08Speaker 2: coming in on Wednesday in Texas. There's this gad that
- 11:12Speaker 2: they used to play with and he came in maybe
- 11:15Speaker 2: that was Thursday, and they were like, it's just how
- 11:18Speaker 2: good luck. That's all I know.
- 11:21Speaker 1: For those who are listening and not watching, the stats
- 11:25Speaker 1: on the screen just showed how good the twins were
- 11:28Speaker 1: on offense this road trip. Trevor Larnick, Ryan Krayler, Victor
- 11:31Speaker 1: Karattini all over five hundred for the trip. Josh Bell
- 11:35Speaker 1: was four fifty five for the trip, ten hits and
- 11:37Speaker 1: twenty two at bats. Alex Jackson was also fifty yeap
- 11:41Speaker 1: Luke Keishael and brooks Lee were both ever three hundred.
- 11:44Speaker 1: I didn't have Buston on there, but he had seven hits,
- 11:46Speaker 1: including a grand Slam which was just like a footnote.
- 11:55Speaker 2: Market. That Larna kit yesterday was so huge too. So
- 12:01Speaker 2: you know, you're up three to two going into the
- 12:03Speaker 2: ninth inning and just added an extra run. Marnick just
- 12:08Speaker 2: had an amazing he's like a one twenty two ops
- 12:11Speaker 2: plus his road trip, what was it was? He eight
- 12:15Speaker 2: for fourteen on the trip with eight RBIs eight.
- 12:17Speaker 1: For twenty sorry, twelve for twenty three overall.
- 12:21Speaker 2: Oh sorry, that's right. Yeah. On the set, I mean
- 12:25Speaker 2: he's just hitting rockets everywhere. Yeah, yeah, he's smarling a
- 12:30Speaker 2: collective way.
- 12:31Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, Well, plenty more to talk about. If you
- 12:34Speaker 1: like what you hear, please toss us a like, subscribe comment.

- 13:51Speaker 1: That was a good road trip overall, as we just
- 13:54Speaker 1: talked about, but not everything was great, Dan. Probably the
- 13:57Speaker 1: most notable bit of band news for the Twins last
- 14:01Speaker 1: week was mick Abel, who was all set to return,
- 14:03Speaker 1: was with the team right in Arizona and then had
- 14:05Speaker 1: a setback at the last minute. Tell us what's going
- 14:07Speaker 1: on there.
- 14:08Speaker 2: Yeah, he threw a bullpen, like a twenty pitch bullpen
- 14:12Speaker 2: on Friday, and I think the plan was to start
- 14:15Speaker 2: him yesterday against Arizona in the finale, and sometime between
- 14:20Speaker 2: Friday and being done and Saturday, he reported that he
- 14:24Speaker 2: had had some kind of issue. Twins didn't say specifically
- 14:28Speaker 2: what that is, but obviously you're dealing with guy with
- 14:30Speaker 2: right elbow inflammation. It's not hard to think what that
- 14:33Speaker 2: could be. So he is having an MRI today, I believe.
- 14:38Speaker 2: So we'll talk about that Wednesday. But it's just unfortunate
- 14:41Speaker 2: just because that was a real spot of optimism. Mcabele
- 14:44Speaker 2: could potentially come back. He's just been lighting up the radar,
- 14:48Speaker 2: looking good off speed, good swings and misses in his
- 14:52Speaker 2: rehab and for him to have that setback, you know,
- 14:55Speaker 2: it just means that we'll see some more and it's
- 14:58Speaker 2: not a terrible thing because, you know, like all good
- 15:01Speaker 2: things that come from San Diego State, Mike Paradis has
- 15:04Speaker 2: done a good job filling in, you know, like not
- 15:09Speaker 2: that biased or anything, but you know, Mike, Mike Pradis
- 15:13Speaker 2: threw again on Sunday, pitched five innings. He did leave
- 15:16Speaker 2: losing two to nothing. Their rookie had a really nice debut,
- 15:21Speaker 2: pitched into the six two and and so both teams
- 15:25Speaker 2: called it a bullpen day, and both teams had their
- 15:28Speaker 2: starters go into the sixth inning. That's a great bullpen
- 15:31Speaker 2: day if you're managers. Yea. But Paradis, that's you know,
- 15:36Speaker 2: they came back, they rallied to win. That's three starts
- 15:38Speaker 2: for him. He's pitched twenty innings overall in five games.
- 15:40Speaker 2: But that's three starts for Mike Pradis. They won all
- 15:43Speaker 2: three of his starts. He does not have a win.
- 15:45Speaker 2: Yesterday is the first time he would have qualified for one.
- 15:48Speaker 2: But that's why the win stat is BS. Mike Bradis.
- 15:51Speaker 2: The twins are three and zer. When you're on the
- 15:52Speaker 2: mountain man, and you know it's a four oh five
- 15:55Speaker 2: area that there's there's room for some regression in there.
- 15:58Speaker 1: Stunt just well, he's excelling when he shouldn't be, necessarily
- 16:04Speaker 1: because of the San Diego state excellence.
- 16:06Speaker 3: Yes, Dan's gonna on the desk when when comes.
- 16:14Speaker 2: A little rudy action. Uh. He like twenty innings. He's
- 16:18Speaker 2: got nine walks and that could catch up to him,
- 16:20Speaker 2: there's no question, and only eleven strikeouts, so he's putting
- 16:24Speaker 2: the ball in play a lot and depending on like
- 16:27Speaker 2: how the infield's aligned, you know, they better have their
- 16:29Speaker 2: good defense out there those days. But I will say,
- 16:33Speaker 2: like he just goes after guys, he attacks. I like
- 16:36Speaker 2: what I see, and that no nonsense. I'm here to
- 16:39Speaker 2: do this and I'm not gonna nibble. It's it's working
- 16:42Speaker 2: for him, and the Twins are really rewarding him. You know,
- 16:46Speaker 2: they didn't give him run support during the game astery
- 16:48Speaker 2: but again three and nine and he starts pretty good
- 16:51Speaker 2: fill in when you're looking at you know, still trying
- 16:54Speaker 2: to work around the Bailey overloss and at some point
- 16:57Speaker 2: you're you're trying to get you know, able back and
- 17:00Speaker 2: cut down Connor Prelib's innings. There's a lot of stuff
- 17:03Speaker 2: to be done here, for sure.
- 17:06Speaker 1: Three starts for Parade's if he's made five appearances this year,
- 17:09Speaker 1: but three of them were starting t wins, bullpen games
- 17:13Speaker 1: over the last few weeks, twelve and two thirds innings,
- 17:16Speaker 1: pitch a three five five era tyler. You can't ask
- 17:19Speaker 1: for much more out of a patchwork. Put him in
- 17:22Speaker 1: there because you need to know somebody, some fresh arm starter.
- 17:26Speaker 3: Well yeah, and ultimately, like who knows what they even
- 17:29Speaker 3: said to him when they brought him in to pitch,
- 17:32Speaker 3: you know, the first time they called him up. You know,
- 17:33Speaker 3: it's like, hey, you're going to pitch wherever, you know,
- 17:37Speaker 3: make the most of it kind of thing. And I
- 17:39Speaker 3: think sometimes that would take some pressure off of a guy.
- 17:42Speaker 3: It's like, look, it doesn't matter what I do. Whenever
- 17:45Speaker 3: X y Z player comes back, I'm gone. And so
- 17:48Speaker 3: he's made a statement. He's honestly, he's making an argument
- 17:52Speaker 3: for him to stay in whatever role it is. I mean, honestly,
- 17:56Speaker 3: you could say should be in the rotation. You know,
- 17:58Speaker 3: he's going five innings against competitive teams, like you know,
- 18:01Speaker 3: when the time comes to make a move, he's no
- 18:03Speaker 3: longer that expendable guy. He's now all right, where do
- 18:06Speaker 3: we slide him to keep him available? Which is all
- 18:09Speaker 3: you can ask, you know, they say when guys get
- 18:11Speaker 3: optioned or you know, you you think you're getting screwed
- 18:13Speaker 3: in triple A, it's like, well, you need to force
- 18:15Speaker 3: a team's hand to keep you around, and he's doing
- 18:19Speaker 3: that and he's competitive. Like I've watched every game, I
- 18:22Speaker 3: feel like that he's in and it's like he's like
- 18:24Speaker 3: Dan said, he's attacking guys. He's making them swing, and
- 18:27Speaker 3: that's that's a key to success.
- 18:29Speaker 2: You know.
- 18:29Speaker 3: It's guys come up and are timid to throw, and
- 18:33Speaker 3: you get behind and you walk and you go up
- 18:34Speaker 3: the big homer and it's it happens fast. But he
- 18:37Speaker 3: seems like the game's moving slow for him right now,
- 18:40Speaker 3: and he's you know, he's got nothing to lose, so
- 18:42Speaker 3: why not go out and do what you can and
- 18:44Speaker 3: show what you got? And you know he's making the
- 18:46Speaker 3: most of his opportunity, that's for sure.
- 18:49Speaker 2: I think it's like a development success story. I look,
- 18:55Speaker 2: this is a guy that was drafted lower down. I
- 18:56Speaker 2: can't remember around, but it's somewhere in twelve to fifteen.
- 19:00Speaker 2: You don't expect a lot of those guys. I know
- 19:03Speaker 2: he did wholesale changes. He worked on his body. He
- 19:06Speaker 2: did a whole bunch of stuff. And the Twins said, hey,
- 19:09Speaker 2: we're gonna point you in a direction. This is your
- 19:11Speaker 2: pack from the Major is similar to what they did
- 19:14Speaker 2: with Kyler Fedco. He said, I'll give it a shot.
- 19:17Speaker 2: What do you have to lose? And that's how he's
- 19:19Speaker 2: treating it at the big league level, which is he
- 19:22Speaker 2: came in Pittsburgh and they needed length. It was right
- 19:25Speaker 2: when Bailey went down, it was you know, they were
- 19:28Speaker 2: just shorthanded. Rojas had gone down. He, by the way,
- 19:32Speaker 2: just got back to this team over the weekend, Henry Rojas.
- 19:35Speaker 2: But like, you didn't have much of a path, and
- 19:39Speaker 2: you forced one and created one by just going at
- 19:42Speaker 2: it and going after it, and you got like that,
- 19:45Speaker 2: like and it is something. Was talking to Anthony Bonda
- 19:49Speaker 2: before the day game in Texas and he was like,
- 19:53Speaker 2: this guy he's made an impression on those guys because
- 19:57Speaker 2: he comes in and he's not scared by the moment
- 19:59Speaker 2: and he keep showing it. That's what you need when
- 20:02Speaker 2: you're when you're that guy, when you're Mike Paradis, the
- 20:04Speaker 2: San Diego State only gets you so far.
- 20:07Speaker 1: So unfortunately threw the hat down.
- 20:10Speaker 2: They claim the win.
- 20:13Speaker 1: Also notable that the bullpen has had his back in
- 20:16Speaker 1: these bullpen games eight and the third score listenings out
- 20:19Speaker 1: of the out of the bullpen behind the parade Is
- 20:21Speaker 1: and his last two starts, and they were both four
- 20:24Speaker 1: to two wins, so not a lot of room for
- 20:26Speaker 1: error in those games and got the job done. It's
- 20:29Speaker 1: not just happening on the Mount Dan. Twins also are
- 20:32Speaker 1: still waiting for Ryan Jeffers to come back, and the
- 20:36Speaker 1: replacements there at catcher have certainly stepped up.
- 20:39Speaker 2: Yeah, hopefully we'll hear some more on Jeffers in the
- 20:42Speaker 2: next couple of days, just an update. But he's right
- 20:46Speaker 2: now about a month in and it was somewhere between
- 20:49Speaker 2: six to eight weeks of the brom broken hammet bone.
- 20:57Speaker 2: But Victor Karattini and Alex jack And are hitting a ton.
- 21:01Speaker 2: They had a great road trip that you know. Krotene
- 21:04Speaker 2: had three hits and three RBIs in the sixteen run outburst.
- 21:08Speaker 2: Alex Jackson had the game tying slash go ahead single
- 21:12Speaker 2: on Sunday, he would have tied it. There was the
- 21:15Speaker 2: throwing error that hit Josh Bell who was going first
- 21:18Speaker 2: to third on the play and he had to score,
- 21:20Speaker 2: so the Twins went ahead. But the I tweeted out
- 21:23Speaker 2: a stat the two catchers are hitting a combined like
- 21:27Speaker 2: three point fifteen with three eighty one on base, four
- 21:31Speaker 2: ninety five slug, four homers, seventeen RBIs in the months
- 21:35Speaker 2: since Jeffers has gone down. Look, the Twins went out
- 21:39Speaker 2: of their way to acquire Yeah, they knew, you never
- 21:43Speaker 2: go through a year with two catchers, right, they were
- 21:45Speaker 2: hoping you do. You always hope you get through a
- 21:48Speaker 2: year with two catchers. But the Twins have had bad experiences,
- 21:51Speaker 2: like many teams, when you get to the lacking depth
- 21:54Speaker 2: and you suffer a major injury. So what did they
- 21:57Speaker 2: do this year? They signed Victor Karattini to two year,
- 21:59Speaker 2: seven million our deal one that gives them a potential
- 22:02Speaker 2: catcher for next year if Ryan Jeffers, when Ryan Jeffers
- 22:05Speaker 2: leaves via free agency or possibly being traded, but Kartini
- 22:10Speaker 2: like he's going to be here next year. They know that.
- 22:12Speaker 2: They also acquired Alex Jackson in November before they signed Karattini.
- 22:17Speaker 2: It was sort of more of like, we're going to
- 22:18Speaker 2: have this guy in a budget deal. But they kept him.
- 22:22Speaker 2: They didn't trade him in spring training. He's making one
- 22:24Speaker 2: point three million. He's arbitration eligible. They knew he was
- 22:28Speaker 2: going to be starting the season at TRIPLEA, but they
- 22:30Speaker 2: wanted him just in case because he's a backup with
- 22:33Speaker 2: experience at the major league level. It's not a ton
- 22:35Speaker 2: of experience, but he was coming off his best career
- 22:38Speaker 2: offensive season last year with Baltimore. It took him a
- 22:41Speaker 2: little while to get going. He's fast, you know, behind
- 22:45Speaker 2: the plate. I think Jeffers is probably their best, especially
- 22:49Speaker 2: on the challenge side. Kartini's really good on the challenge side,
- 22:51Speaker 2: but Jackson is doing a really good job filling in
- 22:55Speaker 2: where you don't have to feel like you have to
- 22:57Speaker 2: force Kartini to play every day, and that's a That's
- 23:01Speaker 2: really what you hope for when you acquire depth like that,
- 23:05Speaker 2: is that you don't want to have to use it,
- 23:07Speaker 2: but if you do, it's good to have it. And
- 23:10Speaker 2: their production has been very big for them at a
- 23:12Speaker 2: time when we all thought the catchers were going to
- 23:15Speaker 2: fall on their face because Kroteni had a really rough
- 23:17Speaker 2: start to the season. He was just not hitting in
- 23:19Speaker 2: mid May, and now he's getting consistent bats. It's it's
- 23:22Speaker 2: been very good the last month and they've they've held
- 23:25Speaker 2: up even though they lost probably Jeffers would have been
- 23:28Speaker 2: like an all star pace nine to fifty ops. That's
- 23:32Speaker 2: a big bat to lose, and they've they've been able
- 23:35Speaker 2: to hold up.
- 23:36Speaker 1: Did you say we're getting an update soon on Jeffers Dan,
- 23:39Speaker 1: I mean.
- 23:40Speaker 2: The end of a road trip. We'll see him and
- 23:42Speaker 2: he'll give his an idea. Last yes, he was. He
- 23:48Speaker 2: had taken two days of dry swings, I believe last
- 23:52Speaker 2: time before we left, and that was, you know, ten
- 23:55Speaker 2: days ago or dry whatever the hell that is is a.
- 24:00Speaker 1: Dry swing, no hand with no ball, Okay.
- 24:05Speaker 2: Yeah, no tea, no flips.
- 24:08Speaker 3: Basically what you do in the morning when you're standing there,
- 24:10Speaker 3: when your kids are getting you know, riled up. It's okay,
- 24:13Speaker 3: what am I going to do today with these guys?
- 24:15Speaker 2: Right? Okay? Got it?
- 24:17Speaker 3: The more you know, as minimal effort as you can
- 24:19Speaker 3: put into a swing.
- 24:22Speaker 1: All right, with that, Guess what, guys, it's time to
- 24:25Speaker 1: put our streak on the line. Oh yeah, we gotta
- 24:30Speaker 1: do it. Dan Hayes saved us at the death on
- 24:34Speaker 1: Friday night. Royce Lewis with an eighth inning home run
- 24:37Speaker 1: on Friday to keep our daily dinger stretch going. I
- 24:39Speaker 1: think we're I've lost count. I think we're eight of nine,
- 24:42Speaker 1: maybe nine of ten. I think we only got it
- 24:44Speaker 1: wrong one time, and it was because Dan picked an
- 24:46Speaker 1: injured player. But he has more than made amends for that. Uh,
- 24:50Speaker 1: if you would like to play this game baseball fans,
- 24:52Speaker 1: the MLB season is in full swing and fan Duel
- 24:54Speaker 1: is giving you a chance to call your shot with
- 24:56Speaker 1: daily dingers. Just joining the action is easy. Just make
- 24:59Speaker 1: your free pick on who's hitting a home run in
- 25:01Speaker 1: their game, and if you're right, you'll get a profit
- 25:03Speaker 1: boost to use on your next bet for a chance
- 25:05Speaker 1: at extra winnings. It's just another reason why FanDuel is
- 25:08Speaker 1: the home of home runs. I have good news for tonight.
- 25:15Speaker 1: Excuse me, I can't even get it out. So exciting,
- 25:18Speaker 1: so excited, Twins. The Twins are facing Eric Lower, lefty.
- 25:24Speaker 1: He's allowed sixteen home runs on the year. That's a lot,
- 25:27Speaker 1: including that because he used to be a blue Jay
- 25:31Speaker 1: and both Trevor Larnick and Brooks League got him in
- 25:35Speaker 1: an April game in Toronto. He's allowed at least one
- 25:39Speaker 1: home run in each of his last ten starts. What
- 25:41Speaker 1: could go wrong? Guys? This is going to be the one.
- 25:45Speaker 1: Surely we must be able to barrel pick a pick
- 25:49Speaker 1: a homer hitter tonight.
- 25:52Speaker 2: Who should start?
- 25:52Speaker 1: Should I start? I feel like it's been a while,
- 25:54Speaker 1: sin time. Yeah, I'll go last, I Matt I didn't pick
- 25:58Speaker 1: Carrotini on Friday, but I think thankfully Royce Lewis came through. Yeah, Tyler,
- 26:03Speaker 1: Tyler is trying to help me out here. I am.
- 26:09Speaker 1: I'm gonna stick with the hot hand and go Trevor Larnick.
- 26:13Speaker 2: I like it.
- 26:13Speaker 1: It's boring.
- 26:14Speaker 2: But lower Lowers, No, no, no, Heylower's gotta his splits
- 26:19Speaker 2: are dead. Even left he's at seven fifty five ops
- 26:21Speaker 2: against him, and right he's have a seven to fifty
- 26:23Speaker 2: oh ps. So even though he's a left lefty, it's
- 26:27Speaker 2: not a festive or disadvantage for you to take Larnick.
- 26:32Speaker 2: I like that. I like it.
- 26:33Speaker 1: I would like to see, by the way I should say,
- 26:35Speaker 1: I'd like to say thank you to follow Territory for
- 26:37Speaker 1: having us do this segment today instead of Wednesday during
- 26:40Speaker 1: the for the show. Hey start, So that's yeah, help
- 26:45Speaker 1: us out a lot.
- 26:46Speaker 3: Yeah, it's worked out well, don't I gotta Buck's gonna
- 26:50Speaker 3: make a statement tonight at some point, Right, they got
- 26:53Speaker 3: somebody's gotta show up and papam early. Why not our
- 26:57Speaker 3: guy that should be an all star.
- 27:01Speaker 2: I'm gonna stick with what got us here on Friday. Look,
- 27:04Speaker 2: all right, he's Royce Lewis at home and from a
- 27:07Speaker 2: big crowd with a home run hitable pitcher, and you
- 27:13Speaker 2: know he's not totally It wasn't a great road trip
- 27:17Speaker 2: for him. He was like four for twenty six with
- 27:21Speaker 2: like nine strikeouts. But there was that double, there was
- 27:24Speaker 2: the homer. He got us here. Let's him with home
- 27:28Speaker 2: cooking and a big crowd. I like it.
- 27:29Speaker 1: So Royce Lewis got to give him credit for getting
- 27:32Speaker 1: us here. Thank you, Royce. We'll see if we can
- 27:35Speaker 1: do it against that's Trevor Laarnick Byron Buxton, Royce Lewis. Yes,
- 27:39Speaker 1: we are aware that it's a lot easier when you
- 27:41Speaker 1: get three choices instead of just one, but it is
- 27:45Speaker 1: what it is. Here we are you can play too.
- 27:48Speaker 1: You don't have to pick a Minnesota twin. You can
- 27:49Speaker 1: pick anybody you want. But if you want to play,
- 27:51Speaker 1: head over to FanDuel dot com slash podcast to get started.

- 28:24Speaker 1: As we've mentioned several times on this show, a big
- 28:28Speaker 1: series is starting tonight, Monday Night for the Twins. They
- 28:31Speaker 1: have the best team in baseball coming into town, the
- 28:35Speaker 1: Mighty Dodgers. They're gonna have to be at their best, Dan,
- 28:38Speaker 1: and you know, like I don't think anyone expects them to,
- 28:42Speaker 1: you know, sweep the series and get to five hundred.
- 28:45Speaker 1: A winn or two would certainly be something, but it's
- 28:47Speaker 1: it's definitely we're gonna have to see the version of
- 28:49Speaker 1: the Twins that put up sixteen runs in three innings
- 28:52Speaker 1: more than the one that struggles and can't get anybody out.
- 28:57Speaker 2: I like their chance obviously, yeah, exactly. I like their
- 29:01Speaker 2: chances right now, way better to show up and compete
- 29:05Speaker 2: in this series, way better than a week ago, ten
- 29:08Speaker 2: days ago, before that Cardinals series, just because we've seen
- 29:13Speaker 2: them come out and just play with confidence, continue fighting,
- 29:18Speaker 2: and they talk about that all the time, the twenty
- 29:20Speaker 2: seven outs thing. But it's real with them, and the
- 29:25Speaker 2: offense is just it's there's no safe spots right now
- 29:29Speaker 2: in the offense when Luke Kishaw is in the ninth
- 29:32Speaker 2: spot getting on base all those times, when Josh Bell is,
- 29:36Speaker 2: you know, dumping two out hits in the center field
- 29:39Speaker 2: or left center field and killing pitchers with two out
- 29:42Speaker 2: RBIs in the middle. After you get past Royce Lewis
- 29:47Speaker 2: and Buxton and Larnick getting protection from Buxton and really
- 29:52Speaker 2: taking advantage of it, it just feels like it's a
- 29:55Speaker 2: much better group and you have good timely hitting from
- 29:58Speaker 2: brooks Lee and you know everywhere you look. It's so
- 30:01Speaker 2: I like that they're in this spot Donaquin's Dodgers. But
- 30:05Speaker 2: I mean, this is a hell of a test. This
- 30:07Speaker 2: really is a You do get the one of their
- 30:10Speaker 2: worst pitchers tonight, that's great. You also get one of
- 30:12Speaker 2: their best pitchers on Wednesday in show Hey Otani and
- 30:15Speaker 2: show Hey who's a dad again? For the second? Is
- 30:19Speaker 2: it second child? Or is this is this their second.
- 30:23Speaker 3: With that going yeah, hopefully there, hopefully you got no
- 30:27Speaker 3: sleep on this private plane wherever we have been flied.
- 30:31Speaker 1: And in between is Justin Ribleski, who's no slouch either,
- 30:34Speaker 1: So uh A tough, a tough last couple of games.
- 30:37Speaker 1: It'll be Zebbie Matthews tonight against Loward, Joe Ryan against Rableski,
- 30:41Speaker 1: and Connor Prelip the unfortunate soul who goes up against
- 30:45Speaker 1: show Hey Otani h I'll put the tail of the
- 30:48Speaker 1: tape on the screen here since I worked really hard
- 30:50Speaker 1: on this earlier today. But Dodgers, we said they have
- 30:54Speaker 1: the best record, they have the best starting pitching e
- 30:56Speaker 1: r A, the twelfth best bullpen team average. Oh I
- 31:01Speaker 1: didn't actually end up putting the ops on their ops,
- 31:04Speaker 1: and the best team run differential. They spend a lot
- 31:06Speaker 1: of money. It's actually about three hundred million, not eleventy
- 31:08Speaker 1: billion dollars on the payroll. But the Twins, as you
- 31:11Speaker 1: can see, are are lagging behind significantly in all those metrics.
- 31:14Speaker 1: It is David versus Goliath, but Tyler, anything can happen
- 31:19Speaker 1: in baseball.
- 31:20Speaker 3: Yeah, and to that point about Prelip against show Hey,
- 31:23Speaker 3: I had the opportunity, I guess you'd call it. I
- 31:26Speaker 3: think it was in fifteen. I kind of slid into
- 31:29Speaker 3: that number one slot in the rotation, and every time
- 31:32Speaker 3: out I was facing Chris Sale for lander like Kykole
- 31:36Speaker 3: and it's like, what do you have to lose today?
- 31:38Speaker 3: Kind of like we're talking about Prietus. So for a
- 31:40Speaker 3: guy like Prelip, you kind of go into it almost
- 31:43Speaker 3: if you want it to be a relaxed you're like,
- 31:45Speaker 3: hey whatever, man, like we're facing show. Hey, so I
- 31:48Speaker 3: just got to go get somebody out. And sometimes that
- 31:50Speaker 3: relaxed feel like allows you to perform better than you'd
- 31:53Speaker 3: even imagine, so you never know what can happen. You
- 31:56Speaker 3: got to play the twenty seven ounce like Dan just said,
- 31:58Speaker 3: like it's you still can it just show up and win.
- 32:01Speaker 3: You got to go out and compete, and you know,
- 32:03Speaker 3: hopefully for him to he'll probably get a bump out
- 32:06Speaker 3: of playing the Dodgers. Who knows who might rip out
- 32:08Speaker 3: one hundred out of nowhere. You know, he never crazier
- 32:11Speaker 3: things have happened.
- 32:12Speaker 2: You got to be playing your best too, and that
- 32:16Speaker 2: for the Twins defensively, I really want to keep hammering
- 32:20Speaker 2: this point. I think it means Ryan Kreiler's your shortstop.
- 32:23Speaker 2: Look good player. Tristan Gray, he is. Tristan Gray had
- 32:28Speaker 2: some good hits early on in this season. A lot
- 32:31Speaker 2: of it was when he's playing sometimes shortstop, sometimes third base,
- 32:35Speaker 2: moving all over. He's had two Grand slams, he's had
- 32:38Speaker 2: some big three run doubles off the wall, stuff like that.
- 32:42Speaker 2: Me has twenty eight RBIs. But at shortstop, he's played
- 32:46Speaker 2: one hundred and eighty four innings. At shortstop, he's minus
- 32:48Speaker 2: seven defensive runs saved. That is tied for last amongst
- 32:52Speaker 2: all major league shortstops with brooks Lee at minus seven. Now,
- 32:57Speaker 2: for context, one hundred eighty four innings, I think Bobby
- 32:59Speaker 2: Witt is it six hundred and sixty one innings right now.
- 33:03Speaker 2: So Tristan Gray has played a little less than a
- 33:07Speaker 2: quarter of the innings and he's the worst defensive shortstop
- 33:11Speaker 2: in baseball by metrics. Again, he's a solid player, but
- 33:16Speaker 2: he's a utility guy. He should be moving around and
- 33:20Speaker 2: playing matchups. And you know, Derek Shelton's talked about doing
- 33:24Speaker 2: the thing that's best first team when he replaced Luke
- 33:27Speaker 2: Keyshlfer defense late in that game in Detroit. I mean,
- 33:31Speaker 2: I just think Kreidler is that we keep seeing it.
- 33:34Speaker 2: He had like three dazzling plays on this road tray,
- 33:37Speaker 2: but then beyond the dazzling plays, he makes every other play,
- 33:41Speaker 2: even the hard ones look rooutine, and he's just so one.
- 33:45Speaker 2: He's the best athlete, he's got the best range. His
- 33:48Speaker 2: offense will drop off most likely, there's just no way
- 33:51Speaker 2: that he can keep up this eight to fifty ops
- 33:55Speaker 2: facing the toughest right handers. But honestly, you got to
- 33:58Speaker 2: the run prevention side needs come in. You got to
- 34:01Speaker 2: take care of your pitchers and Kreidler. You know, I
- 34:04Speaker 2: wonder where they were where they are if Kreiler is
- 34:07Speaker 2: at short on Friday night because they had the double
- 34:09Speaker 2: play ball where Tristan Gray flipped it a little too
- 34:13Speaker 2: far for Luke Kishel and they didn't get the turn
- 34:16Speaker 2: and it leads to more runs, and I know he
- 34:18Speaker 2: h had another misplay. Like look, I just Kreidler seems
- 34:23Speaker 2: until Kylen Culpepper comes up, Kreyler seems like he is
- 34:26Speaker 2: the best fit to start, you know, five times a week.
- 34:29Speaker 2: Still get Gray. You want to keep him involved, You
- 34:31Speaker 2: want to keep all your guys involved. And I do
- 34:33Speaker 2: get that. Maybe he plays twice a week, but I
- 34:37Speaker 2: think the matchups maybe should go out the window here
- 34:39Speaker 2: because the plus on the defensive side will make up
- 34:43Speaker 2: for the lack of offense that you might get from Kreidler.
- 34:46Speaker 2: And also Kreidler's having a career year and he's done
- 34:50Speaker 2: some things at the plate to make himself. He says
- 34:52Speaker 2: he feels like an athlete again that he figured out
- 34:55Speaker 2: in the offseason how to simplify things and get more
- 34:58Speaker 2: into the swing that he used to have when the
- 35:01Speaker 2: swing that got going to be a third round draft pick.
- 35:04Speaker 2: And you know, I mean, this guy knows who he
- 35:07Speaker 2: is and he's starting to hit with power and authority.
- 35:09Speaker 2: Like we saw him hit an afo home run at
- 35:11Speaker 2: Texas their day into the bullpen. It's not an easy
- 35:14Speaker 2: place to homer and he hit it the right center.
- 35:16Speaker 2: So anyways, that's my that's my.
- 35:19Speaker 1: Did Kreidler go to San Diego State too?
- 35:22Speaker 2: Nobody? No, you want to know something funny. He grew
- 35:25Speaker 2: up in San Diego. Okay, okay, and okay, wait, two
- 35:30Speaker 2: guys on the one of the two. Now he didn't
- 35:34Speaker 2: one of the No. You know why I know that
- 35:35Speaker 2: because his dad is a sports writer and we we don't.
- 35:39Speaker 2: We sports writers do not live in Coronado, not unless
- 35:42Speaker 2: we inherit it at home from someone. So one of two,
- 35:47Speaker 2: one of two players on the team whose fathers was
- 35:50Speaker 2: a sports writer or broadcast.
- 35:52Speaker 1: The Twins will pass the halfway point of the season
- 35:58Speaker 1: on Tuesday. That's Game eighty one, and this is the
- 36:02Speaker 1: beginning of an interesting stretch for the Twins. It's a
- 36:04Speaker 1: six game homestand the Rockies come after the Dodgers for
- 36:07Speaker 1: the weekend, but also eighteen games to go till the
- 36:11Speaker 1: All Star Break, three of them against the Dodgers, three
- 36:13Speaker 1: at against the Yankees in New York, three against Cleveland.
- 36:16Speaker 1: To Tyler's point, a team that Twins are chasing in
- 36:18Speaker 1: the Central and if they can do well in just
- 36:20Speaker 1: those series, that's a big boost. But they also have
- 36:23Speaker 1: the NL worst Rockies, the ALE worst Angels, and the
- 36:26Speaker 1: Astros in there too, So a good stretch against some
- 36:30Speaker 1: competition that is certainly going to be in the playoffs
- 36:34Speaker 1: in LA and New York, some others that might be
- 36:36Speaker 1: like Cleveland and Houston, who's right there with the Twins
- 36:38Speaker 1: in the wildcard race, and also a couple series they
- 36:42Speaker 1: definitely should win if they're a serious team to be
- 36:46Speaker 1: reckoned with as we go forward, all three games this
- 36:48Speaker 1: week against the Dodgers are night games as well, So
- 36:51Speaker 1: how about that no Yeah show, Hey, we'll pitch at night,
- 36:56Speaker 1: not on a getaway day game. We'll be back with
- 37:00Speaker 1: you Wednesday morning, I guess probably before that show Hey
- 37:05Speaker 1: Otani game, and we'll see whether we're talking about wins, losses,
- 37:08Speaker 1: one of each or whatever week sweep get the brooms ready,
- 37:12Speaker 1: hopefully in the right direction. We'll find out. But that's
- 37:17Speaker 1: all we have for you today. Thanks as always for listening.
