Transcript
- 0:01Hi, it's Adam here. And I thought I would create an
- 0:04episode, given that the show has been going for six years now and
- 0:10has over 2200 episodes, to actually show you how to get
- 0:14more out of the show, how to use it in a way that actually
- 0:18enhances your life so it's not passive and it's actually
- 0:22beneficial for you. So what I thought I would do is
- 0:27spend 10 minutes and give you the tips, the tricks, the
- 0:31insights that will enable you to get way more out of the show
- 0:36than just a passive listener. Now, for those people not
- 0:40familiar with me, I'm a hypnotherapist.
- 0:43I've been the host of The Hypnotist for six years, and
- 0:47during that time we've had 20 million streams, which
- 0:53absolutely boggles my mind as to how many people have listened.
- 0:57That's 20 million streams, downloads and views across
- 1:02places like Spotify and YouTube and Apple Podcasts.
- 1:06So if you've listened to the show before, thank you because
- 1:09you've contributed to those numbers.
- 1:12And as I said before, there has been more than 2000 episodes
- 1:15approaching 2300 episode. So in addition for me giving you
- 1:21all of the insights and tips as to how to use the show for you,
- 1:26I also thought it might be beneficial to actually give you
- 1:3010 of my favorite hypnosis sessions of the 2300.
- 1:36So if you're interested, wait till the end of this episode and
- 1:41there will be a link that gives you access to my ten favorite
- 1:46episodes. So hang around for that.
- 1:48So whether you've listened loads before or this is the first
- 1:53episode that you're ever listening of the show, this is
- 1:57the one to listen to because it will help you get more value
- 2:01from all of those other sessions.
- 2:06One of the questions I get asked a lot is what is hypnosis and is
- 2:12hypnosis control and do I have to lose my memory?
- 2:16And I would sum this up by saying that the biggest
- 2:19misconception that people have about hypnosis is that it's
- 2:24something that happens to them rather than with them.
- 2:29For those people that think it happens to them, it comes quite
- 2:32often from Hollywood movies or stage hypnosis shows that they
- 2:36might have seen. But when you think that it
- 2:39happens to you, there's this idea that you just kind of
- 2:42switch off. You're just very passive and the
- 2:44hypnotist talks at you, and then suddenly a change takes place
- 2:48that is not true. Hypnosis happens with you and
- 2:53it's a collaborative thing. And that's why this show is
- 2:57quite unique because I share real hypnosis sessions based on
- 3:02the session I did with a real client facing a real issue.
- 3:05And I do it in such a way where I protect the confidentiality of
- 3:09the clients that I'm working with.
- 3:11Because for me, real hypnotherapy is done with
- 3:14someone, not to someone. And a lot of hypnosis out there
- 3:19is kind of generic scripts recorded for generic people.
- 3:24But that's not how the mind works.
- 3:26The mind likes specificity and that element of being relevant.
- 3:31And that's why I published so many episodes, because I'm
- 3:35thinking it would be useful for the client that I worked with.
- 3:37But there's 8 billion people in the world, so it may be also
- 3:41beneficial for other people in the world that are similar
- 3:45enough to the original client that I was working with.
- 3:48Hypnosis happens with you, so you are an active, aware
- 3:52participant. Some people do get time
- 3:56distortion and they just wake up at the end and they hear me
- 3:58counting up the numbers. That's not that way for
- 4:02everyone. Some people will follow it like
- 4:05a guided meditation that has the added benefit of enhancing their
- 4:10life in some way or helping to facilitate a change.
- 4:14You can't be hypnotized to do something you don't want to do.
- 4:20If there are things that you want to change, you have to want
- 4:23that change to happen, and then the hypnosis can align with
- 4:27that. But if you listen to a hypnosis
- 4:31session about weight loss and you don't want to lose weight,
- 4:34it's not going to do anything for you.
- 4:36It has to work with you. Trance feels like focused
- 4:42attention. I'll give you a few examples of
- 4:45what hypnosis really is more like.
- 4:48If you've read a really good fiction book and you're so
- 4:52immersed in the story that you don't even recall turning the
- 4:55pages or reading the words, you're just so immersed in that
- 4:58story, that's a trance. Or if you've been driving a long
- 5:05journey that you've done many, many times and you're
- 5:07daydreaming while you're driving the car and changing lanes,
- 5:11that's a trance state. I live in London and if I want
- 5:14to see a lot of people in trance on the London Underground or the
- 5:18metro system, you're seeing lots of people with arm catalepsy,
- 5:23with time distortion, focused attention, and they're just
- 5:27immersed in that world. So doom scrolling is like a
- 5:31trance. If you can imagine, you can be
- 5:34hypnotized. And one of my favourite
- 5:36metaphors to explain what hypnosis really is like is like
- 5:39the stabilizers or the training wheels on a children's bike.
- 5:45If the true the the actual stabilizers are there, but you
- 5:49don't pedal and you don't steer, nothing happens.
- 5:52You're just stationary. Hypnosis can support whatever
- 5:55change that you want to make, but it doesn't do it for you.
- 5:58So that's a useful way of thinking about it.
- 6:03The biggest tip I can give you to get more out of any episode
- 6:08that you listen to is to set your intention.
- 6:14Maybe ask yourself the question, what do I want to be different
- 6:17after this? What belief do I want to change?
- 6:20What would I like for myself that is different from where it
- 6:23currently is? And this is called priming.
- 6:28A lot of people know the idea of priming.
- 6:30If I said, you know, the next time you're driving, just say
- 6:34blue car, blue car, blue car, you're going to start seeing
- 6:36more blue cars because you've primed to see more blue cars.
- 6:41So we want to prime your neurology, your neural pathways
- 6:46before the hypnosis. And sometimes I'll give you that
- 6:49prompt in the intro where I'm explaining what the hypnosis
- 6:52session is all about. I will ask you to say, think
- 6:56about the change you want to make.
- 6:57So setting an intention is very, very powerful.
- 7:02Directed attention before an experiences actually changes how
- 7:06the brain encodes and stores what follows.
- 7:09So if you set an intention in any area of your life, if you
- 7:15are playing a quiz and you set the intention of I want to win,
- 7:19you're going to do better than if you just participate.
- 7:21Setting an intention is very, very powerful.
- 7:24You will get exactly the same audio, but you will get a
- 7:28different result. And a good analogy to this is
- 7:32reading a book. If you want to buy property and
- 7:37you read books on real estate, you're intending to read the
- 7:41book to influence your ability to actually buy property.
- 7:45If you've got no intention of buying property and you just
- 7:48read a book on real estate, it's kind of a waste of your time
- 7:50because it isn't linked to an intention.
- 7:53So you would get exactly the same audio as everyone else.
- 7:56But by setting an intention, you're going to get so much more
- 8:00out of the session itself. Set the scene.
- 8:05Now some people just listen. They listen right before they go
- 8:10to bed. There are two things that you
- 8:13can do to get more out of this session.
- 8:18The 1st is using headphones. I actually use Theta wave music
- 8:22as the background music and that's good to activate the
- 8:25mirror neurons to have deeper levels of relaxation.
- 8:29So by listening on on headphones, you're going to get
- 8:32a different experience than if you just listen through your
- 8:35speakers and you'll you'll get a more resonant voice of mine as
- 8:39well. But also choose your
- 8:41environment. If you're listening and it's a
- 8:44busy place, if you're listening while you're commuting and, and
- 8:47I do say in the intro, you know, don't listen while driving and
- 8:51don't listen while using machinery.
- 8:53But beyond that, don't listen in a place where you're going to be
- 8:56interrupted or distracted or disturbed because you're going
- 9:01to have one eye on other things that are going on.
- 9:04The ideal place is to find a place that isn't quite bedtime,
- 9:09but it is comfy and it is private.
- 9:11And maybe that's a sofa and maybe that's a recliner chair,
- 9:15or maybe that is a place that you just feel that you're not
- 9:18going to be distracted or disturbed.
- 9:20That will give you more ability to really hone in and just think
- 9:25about how my clients work with me.
- 9:28My clients aren't doing a session where they're in a busy
- 9:31shopping mall and then they just have their headphones and they
- 9:34do the session. They're in a private place with
- 9:36good Internet, so they've got uninterrupted experience and
- 9:39they're not expecting people to barge in on them while they're
- 9:43doing the session. So treat it like the original
- 9:46client treated the session and you're going to get more value
- 9:49from the hypnosis. Now, this is the next most
- 9:54important way to get more value from the session, and that is
- 9:58work on one area in your life before moving on.
- 10:02Let's say that there are three things that you want to really
- 10:06change in your life. Maybe you want to lose weight,
- 10:09maybe you want to be less anxious, or maybe you want to
- 10:12have a better relationship with money.
- 10:14And there's three things in your life that you want to change.
- 10:18If you haphazardly just listen to an episode that happens to be
- 10:24recent or you like the title and then you find another episode
- 10:29and then you listen to that one, what you're doing is you're
- 10:32dissipating and diluting the focus.
- 10:36I would say if the primary goal, and a great way of framing this
- 10:41so that you prioritise the thing that is most useful for you is
- 10:46to think if you could make one change in your life that would
- 10:50have the biggest benefit to the quality of your life, what would
- 10:54that one change be? And then work on that area.
- 10:57So if that is weight loss because you've got more health
- 11:00and energy and vitality, work on that until you're seeing the
- 11:04progress. And then it might be confidence
- 11:07and then it might be money, and then it might be, let's say
- 11:11public speaking. Confidence specifically.
- 11:14But set the intention as to what you want to work on 1st.
- 11:18If you jump between areas and different kind of topics, you're
- 11:22never going to get as much value.
- 11:25And you can think of this as kind of like a magnifying glass.
- 11:28If the magnifying glass skims over lots of different things,
- 11:32it doesn't really, it doesn't really kind of condense the
- 11:36sun's rays. But if you get a magnifying
- 11:39glass and you hold it in one spot on a sunny day, the the
- 11:43sun's rays actually come down and create a bit of a laser beam
- 11:46in that area. So you want laser focus.
- 11:49So pick 1 theme and stay with it and either give it two or three
- 11:55weeks before you move on to a different area, or that you see
- 11:59the breakthrough that you're looking through because you're
- 12:01building a neural pathway, you're not flicking a switch.
- 12:05And I also like to think that when you have a breakthrough in
- 12:08one area, then you've got irrefutable evidence of that
- 12:12change, and then you can make something else because you've
- 12:17already got evidence that change is possible.
- 12:20And then it becomes this kind of chain reaction of compounding
- 12:24chains. So results go deeper, not just
- 12:28wider. So focus on the most important
- 12:30areas before we move on to the next thing.
- 12:35Make the sessions your own now. I would say 99% of the sessions
- 12:40were created for someone else, therefore they're not always
- 12:45going to be relevant for you. So stay open to the intention.
- 12:53Think about what you want, Disregard any suggestions that
- 12:57don't really fit or aren't quite relevant for you, and hone in to
- 13:03the ones that are. Change sometimes feels
- 13:08uncomfortable if you feel triggered by a certain area or
- 13:13you feel inspired. Quite often the clients that I
- 13:16actually work with on the other side of the of the of the
- 13:21camera, a lot of my sessions are over zoom.
- 13:23They might have an AB reaction if they go back to a certain
- 13:25memory, they might feel liberated.
- 13:28There's a weight off their shoulders.
- 13:30They feel a somatic change, so mild discomfort with these AB
- 13:34reactions can be a signal of a breakthrough and be discerning
- 13:39but not dismissive. I've had comments where there
- 13:43was like one thing in a hypnosis session that just wasn't right
- 13:48for them and maybe I gendered the person I'm working with.
- 13:52I said he or she and they're like, oh it was amazing.
- 13:55But then, then he said this. Don't be dismissive, just be
- 14:01discerning. If it doesn't quite fit with
- 14:03you, totally fine. Just ignore that and hone in on
- 14:07the things you want to be panning for gold.
- 14:09Figure the suggestions on the metaphors that resonate with
- 14:12you, and you'll get more value from the hypnosis sessions.
- 14:17Because bear in mind that these sessions were created based on
- 14:21real client sessions. They paid for those sessions.
- 14:24You're getting the session for free.
- 14:27Therefore it's never going to be as relevant for you as it was
- 14:29for them, because everything was created and customized for them.
- 14:36The session doesn't end when the audio does.
- 14:39The people that I've had the best feedback from, they at the
- 14:45end of the session reflect on the session.
- 14:49That's if they haven't already fallen asleep at that point.
- 14:53If you journal, journalling alongside the hypnosis is a life
- 14:59hack. It's a superpower.
- 15:02So give yourself some opportunity to reflect, like
- 15:05what came up? What are you inspired to do?
- 15:09You know? And there's an element, there's
- 15:11a window when it ends of self hypnosis.
- 15:14If you decide or set an intention after the hypnosis
- 15:18session, that's still in that hypnotic window.
- 15:22So write it down if you can, or scribble it down or set an
- 15:28intention or link it to a goal. And be specific if you can link
- 15:33it to one thing that you're going to do differently as a
- 15:36result of listening to that session.
- 15:38Because behaviour is where the rubber meets the road.
- 15:41You can change how you feel, we can change your belief, but
- 15:45you're only going to believe it when you do something and
- 15:48experience something different. So what are you going to do
- 15:51differently is a nice place to think of them.
- 15:57OK, So what this show can and can't do, The recordings can
- 16:03create genuine lasting shifts. They can build new neural
- 16:06pathways over time. I've had numerous comments of
- 16:09people that have lost weight, slept better, quit smoking.
- 16:14Not by working with me directly, just purely by listening to the
- 16:19very podcast that you're listening to now.
- 16:22And it's very, very broad because I work with a broad
- 16:26client base. And these sessions are available
- 16:29at completely free. I'm a big believer that if I I
- 16:34believe in karmic marketing, if I put a lot of stuff out there
- 16:38for absolutely free, even though it does require time for editing
- 16:42and publishing and the management of that.
- 16:45But some of you listening will think, oh, OK, this has been
- 16:49useful, but I want a more personalized experience.
- 16:53That's where I get my clients from, from people listening.
- 16:56And many people listen to maybe 2-3, four episodes, maybe they
- 17:00listen for a couple of months. And then they chose to work with
- 17:03me directly because they knew it would be more specific and
- 17:06relevant to them. What the recordings can't do is
- 17:11be customized for you. They were created for someone
- 17:14else. What you don't get in the
- 17:17podcast is the 40 minute conversation that I have with
- 17:21the client beforehand where I'm asking very, very specific
- 17:23questions tailored to them. When I do the sessions, I do the
- 17:28sessions live. I don't just send them a
- 17:30recording. I'm seeing them on my screen.
- 17:33So if I notice a facial expression or some kind of
- 17:38response or micro expression, I can change the actual direction
- 17:43of the hypnosis session in real time and I can really challenge
- 17:47a belief system even before the hypnosis starts.
- 17:51A lot of my clients say that actually they find the 40 minute
- 17:54conversation before the hypnosis sometimes just as valuable or
- 17:58even more valuable than the hypnotherapy session itself.
- 18:02Recordings are never going to replace 1 to 1 clinical
- 18:05hypnotherapy, so bear that in mind.
- 18:08But it is free, it is accessible, and if you like the
- 18:12idea, because sometimes Spotify has ads on these, there is a
- 18:16subscriber version which is only £5 a month or about $6 a month.
- 18:20And then you can listen to all of my recent recordings without
- 18:24the intro, without the outro and without any ads.
- 18:27So that's worth considering as well.
- 18:30OK, what I'm going to do for you is give you my 10 personal
- 18:35favorite episodes. So if you click the link in the
- 18:39show notes, that's going to give you access to more information
- 18:43and on there is going to be a link to my ten favorite
- 18:47episodes. And some of these have been
- 18:49inspired by movies or clients that really resonated with me or
- 18:53the ones that I listen to again and again.
- 18:56And believe it or not, I do listen to my own podcast, as sad
- 18:59as that may sound, because I find it useful for me.
- 19:03If I want to do self hypnosis on myself, I record it and then I
- 19:06listen to it back. So by clicking the link in the
- 19:09show notes, within the space of about one minute, you can access
- 19:14the 10 episodes, which are my absolute favorites.
- 19:18And it's a great place because I've published 2300.
- 19:22So therefore you get the ten hand picked episodes, you get
- 19:28them instantly. You can kind of stream them, you
- 19:30can bookmark the page. You can always find them that
- 19:33might be useful. And if you want to figure out if
- 19:38hypnotherapy could be useful for you, I also have a free webinar.
- 19:43So you can actually find out very quickly, are you a good
- 19:47candidate for hypnosis? And are the kind of changes you
- 19:50want to make the kind of changes that hypnosis can help for?
- 19:54And in fact, that webinar will also help you to get more value
- 19:58from the podcast, even if you don't work with me directly.
- 20:02So thank you for giving me your time and attention.
- 20:06Check the show notes for this episode.
- 20:08I think you click more info or learn more, there's something
- 20:12connected to the episode on your phone or your tablet or your PC.
- 20:16Have a look at that and then get those 10 curated episodes that
- 20:20are my favourites. And that's a nice place to
- 20:23start. And in terms of the other thing
- 20:26that can be very useful as a final tip is that on most
- 20:30podcast platforms, you can create a playlist.
- 20:34So if you have your own favourites, so you don't have to
- 20:38find them again, create a playlist within Spotify or Apple
- 20:44or whatever it might be. And then save your favorite
- 20:47episodes there so you don't have to try and find them again and
- 20:51again. So that's a final bonus tip.
- 20:54Thank you for giving me your time and your attention.
- 20:57I hope you enjoy the show. If you've enjoyed this, please
- 21:00give me a five star review because it's good for the
- 21:03algorithm and actually it helps other people find out about the
- 21:06show as well. And don't forget those 10
- 21:09curated episodes. You're one click away from
- 21:11getting them. Check them out and thanks again
- 21:14for your time and attention. Take care.
