- 0:01Do ever find yourself comparing yourself to others or comparing things?
- 0:06Today we're going to talk about comparison and permission.
- 0:09I'm Kimberly founder of Live Life Fully,
- 0:12and welcome to Candid Coach Conversations.
- 0:14Today I have with me Teresa Anderson,
- 0:16author and certified Live Life Fully coach.
- 0:19Good morning, Teresa. Glad to see you.
- 0:20Good morning, Kimberly. Thank you for having me.
- 0:26So we've been talking a lot, especially at this last retreat,
- 0:30planting seeds for 2027. At that retreat,
- 0:33we were talking about permission.
- 0:35Like the overall theme was permission,
- 0:37permission, permission to release,
- 0:40permission to acknowledge ourselves,
- 0:43permission to tend, like tend our gardens,
- 0:47but to tend to ourselves. Anyway,
- 0:48permission across the board. And so today I really wanted to get on here
- 0:52and talk with you.
- 0:53About permission and comparison.
- 0:57I know what has come up at the retreat,
- 1:00and then since the retreat, I've been getting messages from people that have said,
- 1:05well, they've said thank you, and they've talked about giving themselves permission
- 1:10to release the comparison. And I started today by asking:
- 1:14do you ever find yourself comparing yourself to others or comparing things?
- 1:19And I think it happens.
- 1:20more than people even realize.
- 1:23So I'd love to talk to you about that today.
- 1:24And when I say I think it happens more than people realize,
- 1:28I immediately think about social media.
- 1:30And every time, and even not just social media,
- 1:33I mean it could be TV, it whatever,
- 1:36when we're deciding whether or not we like something or we want to watch something,
- 1:40we want to like it, love it, thumbs up it,
- 1:43heart it, all the different emoji things that you can do on social media,
- 1:48that's all comparison.
- 1:50And so, yeah,
- 1:52Mm-hmm.
- 1:53I think comparison can be the a thief of joy and
- 1:57Mm, they can.
- 1:58be a thief of permission. so yeah,
- 2:00I want to hear from you what thoughts come to mind when you hear comparison,
- 2:05permission,
- 2:07I immediately hear a Bible scripture.
- 2:09Immediately.
- 2:10~
- 2:10Which is compare not yourself
- 2:11tell me what?
- 2:13among yourselves. And I think the Lord was telling us flat out,
- 2:17it's the thief of joy to compare yourself to others.
- 2:21And also because if we believe that we are all individual bodies individual parts
- 2:25of the body of Christ, then the head is gonna operate different than the hand,
- 2:29and the hand is gonna operate different than the leg,
- 2:31and the leg is gonna operate different than the heart and the sternum and
- 2:34all of the pieces and parts. And so when I think about that,
- 2:37I think what God is saying is that you're
- 2:39valuable as you are and the thief of joy comes through comparison.
- 2:44I do like the idea of looking at comparison as information though,
- 2:49because sometimes
- 2:49Mm-hmm.
- 2:50it is information, right? It doesn't have to be jealousy.
- 2:53It can be someone else's life reveals something we desire.
- 2:57But
- 2:58Right.
- 2:58trouble begins when their life becomes the measuring stick for ours,
- 3:03right?
- 3:03Ugh, yuck. Trouble. Capital
- 3:06P trouble.
- 3:07So it's different to compare and notice.
- 3:10I like that. I think that inspires me.
- 3:14I I think I'm gonna do more of that in my life.
- 3:16That seems so fun.
- 3:18I wanna try that. It's different from,
- 3:21~ well look well look at this and look at that and mm-mm mm-mm,
- 3:25and having all your ten remarks to make about somebody else's life that
- 3:29has nothing to do with you and they are not thinking about you in that moment,
- 3:33right? And so
- 3:33Right.
- 3:34what a thief of joy. Like you said,
- 3:36it steals your joy in that moment.
- 3:39So I think some really good questions to get down to is like as p us us as people,
- 3:44do we find ourselves comparing ourselves to people?
- 3:48Like there's been times in my career that I've looked to you,
- 3:51Kimberly, and I've been like, you know what?
- 3:52There's things that she does that I notice she does with consistency
- 3:56and it creates a result. And in that idea of looking at your life,
- 4:02I'm able to see, that's a system that I can actually use and incorporate in my own
- 4:07life. And in
- 4:08And that way, it's not stealing my joy,
- 4:10it's actually helping me build and see myself through a new lens,
- 4:14which I think is powerful and beautiful.
- 4:17And it is inspiration. So sometimes comparison can lead to inspiration.
- 4:21It does not have to be the thief of joy,
- 4:24right? But
- 4:24Right.
- 4:25I do think it depends on your inner dialogue.
- 4:27Like, are you a negative person?
- 4:29Are you more a negative Nancy?
- 4:31Did somebody teach you to operate from a negative tone and voice?
- 4:37In your inner man, in your inward dialogue.
- 4:40And if so, I think that's the first problem,
- 4:43right? We have to kind of get back to the realization that I tend to look
- 4:48at the world through a negative lens.
- 4:50And what does that say about me?
- 4:51Where did that come from? Whose voice does that belong to?
- 4:54And do I want to redefine that so that when I do compare,
- 4:58it doesn't sound like jealousy or envy or ill will towards another
- 5:05human being who is simply living their life fooled.
- 5:07Right.
- 5:08Right. Exactly. my gosh. And I
- 5:11love this idea of reframe. So even if somebody is negative,
- 5:15like you were saying, like take that pause,
- 5:17ask yourself, whose voice is that?
- 5:19And do I want to continue it?
- 5:21Yeah.
- 5:21I love this because if I were to compare and have that the 10 remarks
- 5:27to follow about the person who is simply living their life and is
- 5:30not thinking about me at all.
- 5:32Yeah, acknowledge it and then say,
- 5:34Okay, and what is my takeaway?
- 5:36What can I see where I can implement in my life?
- 5:39Or what is a new thought that I can have that can help me grow in that direction
- 5:44if that's the thing that I'm wanting.
- 5:46So I love that reframe that you gave Teresa.
- 5:49So good.
- 5:49Absolutely. I also
- 5:51think about psychology when they're teaching about children.
- 5:54When children struggle to use words,
- 5:57they don't have emotional language.
- 5:59They don't know how to say, I'm frustrated and I'm sad and I'm really hurting,
- 6:04right? So they will throw themselves on the floor and they will kick
- 6:08and scream so that the adults know that this is how they feel on the inside.
- 6:13And so we see that transition into adults when we're dealing with some
- 6:19sort.
- 6:19Of insecurity that we're not really paying attention to in ourselves.
- 6:24And someone will walk in the room and hold up a mirror to the thing that we're
- 6:28avoiding in ourselves. And it could just be that they have a new wardrobe
- 6:33and that's something you've wanted for a while,
- 6:34but you've prioritized everybody else but you.
- 6:37She walks in, she's got a beautiful dress on,
- 6:40she's looking good. All of a sudden,
- 6:42you will science and statistics shows that people will tend to like ignore that
- 6:47person or minimize.
- 6:49Them, not include them in conversation simply because they want them
- 6:53to feel how they felt just because she walked in the room and held up
- 6:58a mirror to some inner insecurity,
- 7:00right? So we see this experience in adults all the time,
- 7:05and really it is it's comparison.
- 7:08That's all it is. It's somebody holding up a mirror.
- 7:11And instead of taking that and and trying to make them feel the way you felt,
- 7:16the PowerPoint.
- 7:19Is you felt something about that person and it's about you.
- 7:24The conversation is now about you.
- 7:27So who do I want to be? What did they represent that is something
- 7:33I genuinely desire? Is it that I want to have that kind of confidence when
- 7:37I walk in a room?
- 7:39Is it that I have been buying my kids new clothes every time they ask,
- 7:42or knew came, or knew this, or knew that,
- 7:44and I haven't prioritized my own needs,
- 7:46and I'm
- 7:47Sure.
- 7:47feeling some kind of way because she has,
- 7:49right? Is it because there's some there's a glow of happiness
- 7:54or childlike wonder that they represent?
- 7:57And I don't really know how to act activate that in my own life because that
- 8:01bit of information that is your power piece.
- 8:04That's how you get to move into position and instead of
- 8:08operating.
- 8:09From a point of insecurity or comparison,
- 8:11you can operate from a point of intrigue,
- 8:14curiosity, and a power play forward.
- 8:17That means that I want to do this next for myself.
- 8:21And then smile at the person and move on because they really did you
- 8:25a favor by making that so clear to you.
- 8:30So true. Yes. You know, as you
- 8:33were talking and I wrote down too loud,
- 8:35too happy. That's something that's come up ~ recently.
- 8:39So I do have some people in my life that are super duper quiet.
- 8:45And other
- 8:45Mm-hmm.
- 8:46people in my life that are super duper not quiet.
- 8:49And
- 8:49Yeah.
- 8:49I don't think I'm a quiet person.
- 8:52And take my daughter, for example.
- 8:54She is not quiet. She is not
- 8:56No.
- 8:56quiet. She's not gonna be quiet.
- 8:58She literally loves life so much that she wants everyone to know.
- 9:04even when she's even if she's
- 9:04She's amazing. I love her by the way.
- 9:08sad, she's not quiet. So ~ but that has come up.
- 9:12It's come up for her and it's come up for some friends of mine that
- 9:15They they wanna live and there has been comparison.
- 9:19I you could even call it judgment if you want to,
- 9:21but from others that
- 9:21Mm-hmm.
- 9:22are like, they're just so loud and they're just so fill in the blank and I'm like
- 9:29Yes, and I'm so glad because they are alive and they
- 9:34are living for themselves. And then I think about the whole role model mindset thing
- 9:38that Brendan always talks about and
- 9:40Uh-huh.
- 9:41what Oprah Winfrey even put on a sign outside of her studio door after working with
- 9:47Brendan that says, Be aware of the energy you bring into this room.
- 9:50Those are probably not the
- 9:50Mm mm.
- 9:51exact words, so don't quote me on it,
- 9:53but it's really the whole purpose is being aware of your own energy.
- 9:58So when I
- 9:58think about Meredith and some others that are vocal and just life is here
- 10:03I'm like bring that energy because maybe a little bit can rub off anyway
- 10:09so as you were talking I was like yes it's not even necessarily about
- 10:12how the person looks it's about how they enter the room and if they're smiling
- 10:16or if they're saying hello
- 10:17Mm-hmm.
- 10:18to everybody.
- 10:19It's
- 10:19can be a a
- 10:20a big
- 10:20number of things a mirage of things and that's why it's beautiful
- 10:24to get it's information like figure out what it is that's activating
- 10:29you what about this person specifically activates you and that's
- 10:32the question you want to ask yourself and then is the
- 10:34Yeah.
- 10:36comparison revealing insecurity or is it revealing desire and
- 10:40get truthful with yourself be honest if it's about an insecurity there's things
- 10:46you can do guess what sis you're not alone
- 10:49There's insecurities all over the place.
- 10:51And people are going in and they're talking with professionals and they
- 10:55are getting the help that they need.
- 10:56It there is hope. So if it is insecurity,
- 11:00let's talk about it. Right? And if it is desire,
- 11:03then what is it that you genuinely desire that you're not giving yourself permission
- 11:08to have, most likely?
- 11:11Yes. So true. So true.
- 11:14can you admire when when someone like has,
- 11:18can you admire what they have or who they are or how they represent themselves
- 11:23without using it as evidence that you're somehow behind,
- 11:26right? Can't your diversity just be diff you can just be different
- 11:32and you can accept that wholly in self-love.
- 11:37and honor the self and the parts that and roles that you play in who
- 11:41you are and acknowledge that it's okay for somebody else to be different.
- 11:46And so it doesn't have to be evidence that I'm somehow behind or not enough.
- 11:52And how much more fun would that be?
- 11:54I
- 11:55Yes.
- 11:56mean, for real. I love this idea of permission.
- 11:59I think another thing that is helpful and we did talk about this
- 12:02in planting seeds is
- 12:04Allowing yourself the permission to acknowledge yourself.
- 12:09So take time this week. Think about all the things that you've survived in 2026.
- 12:14You survived, you've celebrated,
- 12:16you've learned that you've overcome.
- 12:18Maybe you're still stuck in it,
- 12:20I don't know. But like take time to think about it and give yourself that permission
- 12:25to acknowledge. Because I think to Teresa,
- 12:27to your point, the more we can acknowledge ourselves.
- 12:32the less comparing there is to do.
- 12:34Because
- 12:34Mm mm.
- 12:36you'll feel good. You'll feel you'll have like evidence of all
- 12:42the things that you've done, all the things you've celebrated,
- 12:45all the things that I mentioned to give yourself acknowledgement for.
- 12:49Like that is all evidence that you can't.
- 12:51Absolutely.
- 12:52And so it really does minimize that comparison piece.
- 12:57And I truly believe it helps people live life more fully.
- 13:01Are there still
- 13:01One
- 13:02gonna be hard times? Yes. Y'all,
- 13:04Yes, of course.
- 13:05we have to have the
- 13:06hard to be able to fully appreciate or appreciate even more than not so hard.
- 13:13Absolutely.
- 13:14The dark would not know itself without the light.
- 13:18The light would not know itself without the darkness.
- 13:21That is just the way it is.
- 13:23Period the end. So yes, there's still going to be hard.
- 13:28And we can still live life with the heart.
- 13:32We can.
- 13:34Right, so like what would you choose if nobody had an opinion about it?
- 13:37Right? I
- 13:39Hmm.
- 13:39think that'd be a great place to start.
- 13:42What would you choose if
- 13:44nobody had an opinion about it?
- 13:46Amen. Yeah.
- 13:48Yeah.
- 13:49I think that would get you really centered in on maybe where you're allowing
- 13:53permission to control your life or aspects of your value system.
- 13:58So what would you choose if nobody had an opinion about it?
- 14:02If you had a free pass to choose and you could give yourself permission
- 14:06to do anything that you wanted to do.
- 14:08And I I understand that that's with reason,
- 14:11right? Of course, money doesn't grow on trees and we have to do things,
- 14:14Practice.
- 14:15but maybe that just reminds us that we have to budget.
- 14:18And we have to prioritize savings so that we can do the thing that we want to do.
- 14:22It doesn't mean no, it means not yet.
- 14:26And it means
- 14:26Right.
- 14:26not right now. And so the beauty of figuring out what it is that you would do,
- 14:31though, whether or not those other things are already in alignment,
- 14:35is that now you have the aim. Now you know the direction that you're headed in,
- 14:39and you can build systematic steps along the way to get you there.
- 14:43you said not yet and not right now.
- 14:45So and I don't know that I've even I don't think you were in there
- 14:49for this conversation. if you were great we'll have more to even talk about.
- 14:53Ha ha
- 14:54okay so there was a conversation recently about it was really about
- 14:58the word yet although I don't know that that had been said at the time.
- 15:01Okay so our the question was asked
- 15:06Are we giving children a sense of false hope by telling them like don't give up,
- 15:13keep trying, you can do anything you put your mind to.
- 15:16yeah, so there's this big conversation about it.
- 15:20And
- 15:20Okay.
- 15:23Part of the conversation too was also about if you try a s we'll go with sports.
- 15:28If you try a sports like everybody gets a trophy thing and how is it
- 15:33Good or bad, which I can't stand that.
- 15:35And that's what was being talked about.
- 15:37Like is it good or is it not good or is it good or is it bad to give everybody
- 15:42a trophy? Okay. I don't know the answer to that.
- 15:45That's not even the point for me.
- 15:47My bigger point is cause you as you said Teresa,
- 15:51like not yet or not right now.
- 15:53Thinking about money. Money doesn't grow on trees.
- 15:56Dang it. I wish that it did, because I would be planting some.
- 16:01I even have a what's called a money tree in my house.
- 16:03There has not been a dollar bill sprouted yet.
- 16:06Dang. Anyway, so but I think about this.
- 16:09Okay, so money doesn't grow on trees.
- 16:12However, I know what it takes to get money,
- 16:14to make money, to save money. Like I know all those things and like you said,
- 16:20might have to budget differently,
- 16:21I might save differently. So that if we're going with the money thing,
- 16:25that tells me that it's possible.
- 16:30So when I think back to the conversation with kids,
- 16:32are we giving them a sense of false hope by telling them,
- 16:36keep trying, don't give up. You can do what you put your mind to.
- 16:40Are we giving them a sense of false hope?
- 16:42The answer for me is no. Immediately no.
- 16:44thank God. Because as I started as I started
- 16:45Immediately no.
- 16:49talking, I was like, my god, whatever she said.
- 16:52I don't either. And this whole discussion was about skills and talents.
- 16:58And are we born with talents? And if we're not born with it,
- 17:01can we ever get it? And I say,
- 17:03Yes. Yes. Yes.
- 17:05Yes.
- 17:06I think it depends on where we put our time,
- 17:09our energy, our effort into what we truly desire.
- 17:11And our resources. Yes.
- 17:15I mean
- 17:17Back in the day, I way, way back in the day,
- 17:21probably a country song about that,
- 17:22I could not do a toe touch and I could not do a high kick.
- 17:25But by golly, I wanted to make drill team.
- 17:28So I worked and worked and worked until I could do it.
- 17:31But I was not bored doing a high kick.
- 17:32Mm-hmm.
- 17:34I
- 17:34I simply wasn't. And was I the greatest drill team dancer on the planet?
- 17:40No.
- 17:42But to the extent that I wanted to be able to dance,
- 17:45yep.
- 17:46Yeah.
- 17:46It fulfilled the role. It fulfilled the goal.
- 17:48Yeah.
- 17:50And then even with the information of,
- 17:52okay, maybe I'm not built for basketball,
- 17:55right? Maybe the information of what is not for us is just as valuable.
- 18:02So along the journey of what could become,
- 18:06it's important to know both. What is for me and what is simply not for me.
- 18:11Both pieces are informational.
- 18:14Both pieces will help the child redirect towards the dream and the goal that
- 18:18is for them.
- 18:20And so we have we have to allow it in order for them to have the tree that splits
- 18:26into the different branches and the different spaces and areas of their life that
- 18:31get to really magnify what is for them.
- 18:34And giving themselves permission to fail,
- 18:36right? I love that from the conference,
- 18:38the planting seeds
- 18:38Yeah.
- 18:39conference, permission to fail,
- 18:41knowing that yet doesn't necessarily mean that we have all the answers.
- 18:45It just means we have a dream,
- 18:47and maybe that dream is gonna change along the way.
- 18:50that's okay. We're just not there yet,
- 18:52you know? So to me, no,
- 18:56let them dream. Let them dream.
- 18:57And if they figure it out along the way,
- 18:59then that information, what you don't like,
- 19:01what you don't want, what is not for you,
- 19:03is just as valuable as what is.
- 19:05So yeah.
- 19:07Absolutely. I love the
- 19:08whole idea of pivoting. And and this is one of the things that I had said,
- 19:12like, let's say a child has we'll go with a cartwheel.
- 19:15I don't know where cartwheel came from,
- 19:16but let's just go with that. Let's say a child's tried to do a cartwheel
- 19:18and they've tried 27 times to do a cartwheel and their legs are still bent
- 19:23and they're not landing it on the other end and they don't know which hand
- 19:26to put down first. Twenty-seven tries.
- 19:28Who am I? Like who am I to say?
- 19:32Cartwheels are not you're not gonna be able to do a cartwheel.
- 19:34We've tried twenty seven times.
- 19:36And I and I even said that day,
- 19:38I like, yo, I mean I have a crystal wall in my kitchen and my windowsill,
- 19:42and it doesn't work. It doesn't work.
- 19:45And it literally is a crystal wall.
- 19:47And when you look at it, what you're looking at.
- 19:49It's upside down.
- 19:50Like
- 19:54I noticed
- 19:55that.
- 19:56Ha ha.
- 19:57I love that. That's a perfect analogy.
- 19:57If anybody does I mean really
- 20:00and if anybody has a crystal ball that does work,
- 20:03call me. Call me, call me, call me.
- 20:05I want to know where you got it,
- 20:06because mine does not. So who am I to say that on that 28th time they weren't gonna
- 20:13get it?
- 20:14And so if I take that opportunity away,
- 20:16I'm taking that child's permission to themselves away to keep trying.
- 20:21That sounds so grossed to me. So
- 20:23Abs I that's
- 20:24it's awful. It's absolutely awful.
- 20:26And the same for adults. Like,
- 20:29I just don't think we're too old for anything.
- 20:31I don't think we're too old. I don't think we're too short.
- 20:33I don't think we're too tall. I don't think we're too too thin,
- 20:36too fat. Like all the two bleh.
- 20:38Fill in the blame. No,
- 20:40Yeah.
- 20:40we are not. No, we are not. We don't know that for sure.
- 20:43Keep
- 20:44Right.
- 20:44going.
- 20:45Keep going. And if along the way,
- 20:47like Teresa, what you were saying,
- 20:49like if there's a shift or a pivot,
- 20:51great, but be clear about the reason you're pivoting.
- 20:54Mm.
- 20:55Is it because it's really not what you want anymore?
- 20:58Like in your heart, in your gut,
- 21:00it's not there? Or are you giving up and not giving yourself permission
- 21:05to fail forward?
- 21:07Mm-hmm.
- 21:09Yes, when we were at planting seeds and we broke into groups,
- 21:13~ Thomas Edison came up and one of the ladies was talking about how many times
- 21:17he failed before he was able to build the light bulb.
- 21:20And I interjected and I said, Actually he almost burnt down his whole house.
- 21:23I was like, I bet his wife loved
- 21:24Right.
- 21:25that.
- 21:26But guess what? We have a lit world today.
- 21:30Thank you, Thomas Edison, for never quitting and almost like at your
- 21:34own expense burning down
- 21:35Right.
- 21:36your house to build the light b to create the light bulb.
- 21:38So
- 21:39And his wife
- 21:40stood with him, so know who you're surrounding yourself with.
- 21:43Because if she just said, Okay,
- 21:44That's right. That's right. Right.
- 21:46Thomas, that's it. You're never gonna do it.
- 21:48Stop trying.
- 21:49He would have given up. So Yeah.
- 21:51He would have. And the
- 21:53light bulb is probably the most amazing invention,
- 21:56I think. I love light. Like I love being the light.
- 21:59I love light. So yeah.
- 22:00No. Me too. Me too. Golly, can you imagine
- 22:04if we had to go through life with little like a candle?
- 22:07Maybe I'll
- 22:07Everywhere.
- 22:08lose the lighter or I there's just so many things.
- 22:10Now I've got rubbing the sticks together,
- 22:12like all these ideas coming to my head and like,
- 22:14~ my
- 22:16I mean we would make it work. Fire would have been the light,
- 22:19but the light bulb was pretty amazing.
- 22:21So so again, thank you, Thomas,
- 22:21Yeah. Yeah.
- 22:23for failing forward. Giving yourself permission to fail.
- 22:26And thank you, Thomas's
- 22:28wife, for letting him fail.
- 22:30Yeah. And believing in
- 22:32him. Yeah, so good.
- 22:34Yes.
- 22:35So permission, y'all. Permission to release comparison.
- 22:39And permission
- 22:39Yes, that's so good.
- 22:41to
- 22:42Live for yourself.
- 22:45Yes. Ask yourself if there is a dream that's resurfaced throughout your life that
- 22:51you haven't given that you've talked yourself out of or that
- 22:54you haven't given yourself permission to really sit with and see what
- 22:57it would take to get a little further down the road with it.
- 23:03Okay, so y'all, that's the the offer or the permit is to contact it.
- 23:08The call to action. That's our C T A.
- 23:10That's right. The contact
- 23:12is to ask yourself, is there a dream that's been rekindled or think back,
- 23:17was there a dream that you had that you kinda let go and write it down?
- 23:22Then she didn't say this, so I'm messing up.

- 24:13Maybe you just need your own permission,
- 24:15guys. And sometimes the person withholding permission isn't even
- 24:19in the room anymore. So we can just lay their voice to sleep or to rest
