- 0:03Speaker 1: This is the Patriots Training Camp Cast.
- 0:09Speaker 2: The Patriots Training Camp Cast is your source for all
- 0:12Speaker 2: the news from Patriots training Camp.
- 0:14Speaker 1: Well, I do still watch the news. Practice is over,
- 0:17Speaker 1: but the writers of Patriots dot com have you.
- 0:19Speaker 3: Covered what did I miss yesterday?
- 0:20Speaker 1: Now here to review today's practice the writers of Patriots
- 0:23Speaker 1: dot Com.
- 0:25Speaker 4: All right, welcome into another edition of the Patriots Training
- 0:27Speaker 4: Camp Cast. I Mike do So, joined by Tamara Brown
- 0:30Speaker 4: and Paul Perillo and guys. It's been an active twenty
- 0:32Speaker 4: four hours here, and I think right off the top,
- 0:34Speaker 4: we've got to mention Christian Barmore, Patriots making announcement last
- 0:38Speaker 4: night that he's I guess, suffering from blood clots. You know,
- 0:41Speaker 4: significant issue. We've seen this happen in the past with athletes,
- 0:44Speaker 4: but it seems like Christian barmore status is now kind
- 0:47Speaker 4: of being put on hold for the indefinite future, which
- 0:49Speaker 4: is just a big blow I think to the defense.
- 0:52Speaker 4: And of course you want Christian to be healthy, that's
- 0:54Speaker 4: the biggest thing. But we talk about the team here, Tamara,
- 0:57Speaker 4: this is this is a big blow anyway you cut it.
- 0:59Speaker 4: He's an important young player.
- 1:00Speaker 2: He's very important. I feel like two days ago, I
- 1:02Speaker 2: was just saying, Wow, this guy has the caliber to
- 1:04Speaker 2: make it to the Pro Bowl this season. I was
- 1:06Speaker 2: so excited for him, especially after his contract and then
- 1:09Speaker 2: looking at the depth, Mike, you're always someone who's bringing
- 1:12Speaker 2: that up. With this defense, there's no one behind Judean,
- 1:14Speaker 2: There's no one behind Barmore that you think could play
- 1:17Speaker 2: at his level. So I want him to be healthy,
- 1:19Speaker 2: I want him to be out there, and I'm also
- 1:20Speaker 2: thinking who is going to step up and fill his shoes.
- 1:23Speaker 4: So we jumped into practice and we got to move
- 1:25Speaker 4: on and you know, today's first day of pads, very
- 1:27Speaker 4: exciting usually, and we saw some one on ones Paul.
- 1:30Speaker 4: But the big picture, I think that we watched practice separately,
- 1:32Speaker 4: so you know, we come to this without without conferring.
- 1:36Speaker 4: But I thought an Okada for the number one offense
- 1:38Speaker 4: with Jacoby Brissett, we've settled kind of on the same
- 1:40Speaker 4: offensive line. I thought the run game particularly looked like
- 1:43Speaker 4: they hit a couple plays there. It wasn't overwhelming, it
- 1:46Speaker 4: wasn't oh, you know, they're just making plays left and right,
- 1:48Speaker 4: but it felt like the semblance of an offense out
- 1:50Speaker 4: there today.
- 1:51Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean I did think there were some times
- 1:53Speaker 3: I thought the cohesion was more in the seven on seven,
- 1:56Speaker 3: but I do think there were some some runs they hit. Stevenson,
- 2:00Speaker 3: Kevin Harris had a little uh got a seam off
- 2:03Speaker 3: the left side on a play. So there were some
- 2:05Speaker 3: moments I thought. I thought it was a good first
- 2:07Speaker 3: step in pads. I thought there was some physicality, you know,
- 2:11Speaker 3: for the most part, I thought it was kind of
- 2:13Speaker 3: a stalemate up front. I thought, uh, you know, most
- 2:16Speaker 3: of the runs were kind of met with with resistance.
- 2:19Speaker 3: But I did like some of those plays that they hit.
- 2:23Speaker 3: And then that kind of you mentioned the first offense
- 2:25Speaker 3: quote unquote the first offense. I thought that led to
- 2:28Speaker 3: some some plays for Jacoby Brissette. I thought this was
- 2:30Speaker 3: the most comfortable he's looked, you know, in training camp.
- 2:34Speaker 3: So maybe some baby steps there, you know, for that group,
- 2:38Speaker 3: I think we'll get to. The group that followed with
- 2:41Speaker 3: Drake May wasn't as much, but yeah, some some positive
- 2:44Speaker 3: science for preset.
- 2:45Speaker 4: Well let's jump right into its marre. I mean, I
- 2:46Speaker 4: just I from my vantage point, it just kind of
- 2:49Speaker 4: a tough day for Drake May and I thought there was,
- 2:51Speaker 4: you know, not a lot of protection up front. David
- 2:53Speaker 4: Andrews was also missing from practice, so I think a
- 2:55Speaker 4: little bit of the trickle down effect at center might
- 2:57Speaker 4: have affected that a little bit. But just not a
- 3:00Speaker 4: lot of big plays, you know, just it seemed like
- 3:02Speaker 4: Drake was kind of struggling today line problems. As I mentioned,
- 3:05Speaker 4: what did you think of Drake's performance today?
- 3:07Speaker 2: Yeah, I wasn't expecting another interception today obviously, you know,
- 3:10Speaker 2: it went to Dugger again, who seems to always be
- 3:12Speaker 2: in the right place at the right time. It's going
- 3:15Speaker 2: to be a tough one for him, especially if guys
- 3:17Speaker 2: continue to go down or be missing from practice. But
- 3:20Speaker 2: I do want to touch on Leyden Robinson, another rookie
- 3:23Speaker 2: who I thought flash today on the offensive line. Haven't
- 3:25Speaker 2: really heard his name much throughout camp, but today he
- 3:28Speaker 2: had a great one on one against deechurch Wise. So
- 3:31Speaker 2: it's been interesting to see, like another rookie and how
- 3:33Speaker 2: they continue to emerge throughout camp.
- 3:35Speaker 4: Yeah, well, Paul, what about you? What was your take?
- 3:37Speaker 4: Just kind of on that second offense with May And
- 3:39Speaker 4: again they're rotating a lot of guys, especially like the
- 3:42Speaker 4: wide receiver tight end position, so he's working with different bodies.
- 3:44Speaker 4: But but it just was clung out.
- 3:45Speaker 3: I mean, just to me, I felt like, and this
- 3:47Speaker 3: is kind of a continuation that we saw a little
- 3:50Speaker 3: bit on Sunday. I just felt like he was a
- 3:52Speaker 3: little late with some of his reads, the double pumps
- 3:55Speaker 3: he was starting to see too often, and some late
- 3:59Speaker 3: throws to the outside, like we looks unsure of himself.
- 4:02Speaker 3: So I mean, those are some things that he's going
- 4:03Speaker 3: to have to clean up. And I sort of talked
- 4:06Speaker 3: about this before camp started. What I want to see
- 4:08Speaker 3: is as camp goes on, something that I saw, say
- 4:10Speaker 3: on Monday or Tuesday, I don't see on Thursday at Friday,
- 4:13Speaker 3: So we'll see how he takes that. I do think
- 4:16Speaker 3: it was a little choppy today for him and his receivers.
- 4:19Speaker 3: I thought he had a couple of guys that he
- 4:22Speaker 3: sailed some balls on. You know, it might have been
- 4:24Speaker 3: others that weren't particularly open. So I think it's sort
- 4:28Speaker 3: of a work in progress for the entire group. It's quarterbacks, receivers,
- 4:31Speaker 3: it's the protection, it's everything. It's not just Drake May.
- 4:34Speaker 2: And I do think when you're dealing with an artistic
- 4:36Speaker 2: quarterback like Drake May, it's going to take some time
- 4:38Speaker 2: for his wide receivers to learn him especially as the
- 4:41Speaker 2: plays break down, and that has happened, happened a lot
- 4:44Speaker 2: over the past couple of days, just learning him, figuring out,
- 4:47Speaker 2: figuring him out, and knowing that the play is not
- 4:49Speaker 2: over even when the pocket breaks up.
- 4:51Speaker 4: Yeah, so we did have Kaden Wallace back on a
- 4:54Speaker 4: left tackle, chooks a Kora four over on the right side.
- 4:57Speaker 4: You know, I was able to catch a little bit
- 4:59Speaker 4: of the one on one. You know, I thought I
- 5:01Speaker 4: thought that Wallace did okay, held his own. You know,
- 5:03Speaker 4: a couple of reps that I just saw going. It
- 5:06Speaker 4: seemed like Guce got around him. Jenning Z, I thought
- 5:08Speaker 4: he held his own. Fifty four Morgan, I thought he
- 5:10Speaker 4: held his own. But you know, there's a thing to
- 5:11Speaker 4: kind of watch quickly and it's just in a bubble.
- 5:13Speaker 3: Yeah, the one on ones a tough to gauge. I thought. Overall,
- 5:18Speaker 3: you know, it wasn't terrible today. I didn't think the
- 5:20Speaker 3: offensive line, you know, they had some breakdowns obviously, But
- 5:24Speaker 3: the bigger thing for me was the lack of discipline
- 5:26Speaker 3: on offense in general. There were a lot of mistakes,
- 5:29Speaker 3: a lot of false starts, a lot of pre snap penalties.
- 5:31Speaker 3: Talked to Austin Hooper about it afterward, and he just
- 5:33Speaker 3: talked about, you know, these are things that don't require talent,
- 5:35Speaker 3: you know, being able to stay on side. And it
- 5:37Speaker 3: got to the point where Mayo sort of sent the
- 5:39Speaker 3: whole offense running with one rep left. You know, there
- 5:42Speaker 3: was the very last set of eleven on eleven's and
- 5:44Speaker 3: it was four places for were set four place for
- 5:46Speaker 3: may and it was going to be four plays, and
- 5:48Speaker 3: after the third play with Joe Milton, he sent everybody running,
- 5:52Speaker 3: and so that you know, clearly tells you there was
- 5:54Speaker 3: some frustration from the coach. Now, Hooper thought that was
- 5:57Speaker 3: a really good sign from Mayo that you know, you
- 6:00Speaker 3: you gotta get this stuff straightened out now, and you
- 6:03Speaker 3: can decide, and Hooper had a colorful way to say it,
- 6:06Speaker 3: you can decide if you want to be a cross
- 6:08Speaker 3: country team or a football team. I'd rather be a
- 6:09Speaker 3: football team. But if you're not going to do the
- 6:12Speaker 3: things that you're supposed to do, you're gonna at least
- 6:14Speaker 3: be in good condition.
- 6:15Speaker 2: Paul and I liked that he did that when Joe
- 6:17Speaker 2: Milton had the ball, like because he could have easily
- 6:19Speaker 2: been like, okay, well you know this is our third
- 6:21Speaker 2: third string quarterback going in at third in for these reps,
- 6:25Speaker 2: and you could have let it slide, but he let it.
- 6:27Speaker 2: He didn't let it keep going, and he made them
- 6:29Speaker 2: run during that.
- 6:29Speaker 4: Yeah, and it felt like it kind of had built up.
- 6:31Speaker 4: I mean there's been there stars, Yeah, false starts. There
- 6:35Speaker 4: were a lot of laps run today, a lot of
- 6:37Speaker 4: laps run, and a couple other housekeeping things. Of course,
- 6:39Speaker 4: I didn't love seeing this. Jabill Peppers got banged up.
- 6:42Speaker 4: Looked like he went over to the trainer's table, tried
- 6:44Speaker 4: to come out and give it a go, look frustrated,
- 6:46Speaker 4: went back in. He did not finish practice. We had
- 6:49Speaker 4: a little scuffle. Josh Ujay I think got sent off.
- 6:52Speaker 4: And probably the thing that most people are wondering about is,
- 6:55Speaker 4: you know, we're watching first padded practice. Matthew Judon comes
- 6:58Speaker 4: out early before he is not in pads. He's out
- 7:01Speaker 4: to just you know, throw footballs to the fans like
- 7:03Speaker 4: he usually does. That preceded then we caught a sight
- 7:06Speaker 4: of a conversation with Jial Mayo. Wed later I caught
- 7:09Speaker 4: sight of him out in conversation with Elliott Wolf and
- 7:11Speaker 4: Matt grow He ended up walking off the field. I
- 7:14Speaker 4: didn't get a great vibe. It's hard to tell what
- 7:16Speaker 4: was being said. We're not lip readers or anything like that,
- 7:18Speaker 4: but it just doesn't seem like the you know, I
- 7:20Speaker 4: think when we started camp it was I'm here, you know,
- 7:22Speaker 4: we're gonna figure it out, and you know, it just
- 7:24Speaker 4: it seems like maybe there's some sticking points or something,
- 7:26Speaker 4: because it seems like there's something going on there.
- 7:27Speaker 3: Not a great sign.
- 7:28Speaker 2: Absolutely, yeah, yeah, it's not a great sign. And I
- 7:31Speaker 2: just wonder too, does it help when you're signing someone
- 7:33Speaker 2: like Jabil Peppers like forty eight hours ago, seeing another
- 7:37Speaker 2: guy get signed when you're still waiting for yours? Does
- 7:39Speaker 2: that build even more frustration? Obviously? I feel like on
- 7:41Speaker 2: social media he posted that he's happy for him and
- 7:43Speaker 2: he felt like he deserved it, but it's got to
- 7:45Speaker 2: be tough to see yet another contract being signed.
- 7:47Speaker 4: Yeah, So for sure, there's a lot going on, and
- 7:49Speaker 4: we'll see what happens with Pepper's David Andrews. We mentioned
- 7:51Speaker 4: was out little trickle down effect. I think they're already
- 7:54Speaker 4: kind of hurt there at Center without Jake Andrews, So
- 7:57Speaker 4: you know, some shuffling and this is what happens you
- 7:58Speaker 4: get into camp, guys start getting banged up. But hey,
- 8:01Speaker 4: we still just got into pads today. We've got we
- 8:04Speaker 4: think another pads day tomorrow before and off day on Wednesday.
- 8:06Speaker 4: So I think, to Paul's point, looking at some of
- 8:08Speaker 4: the mistakes, some of the things to clean up, maybe
- 8:10Speaker 4: tomorrow they can come out, limit those pre snap penalties,
- 8:13Speaker 4: not hurt themselves, and maybe they can have a day
- 8:15Speaker 4: where they'll grow Tomorrow.
- 8:16Speaker 2: Absolutely, and it was good to see Antonio Gibson out
- 8:18Speaker 2: there today, especially with him starting camp. You know one
- 8:21Speaker 2: what was it the NFI.
- 8:21Speaker 4: List seeing run from him today?
- 8:23Speaker 2: Yeah, seeing him dressed and actually participating was a good sign.
- 8:26Speaker 4: All right, Well that's going to do it for us
- 8:27Speaker 4: for another Patriots training camp cast. And folks, we've got
- 8:30Speaker 4: five practices down. We got i think eight more to go,
- 8:33Speaker 4: thirteen totals, so we're cruising right along. Pads are on,
- 8:36Speaker 4: so it just got a little bit more fun, so
- 8:38Speaker 4: be true. Sure to tune in again tomorrow for another
- 8:41Speaker 4: recap of a padded practice.
