[upbeat rock music] Everybody ride! Good month, everybody. It's Full Spectrum Cycling.
• 0:18
[upbeat music] That jaunty tune we come in with. This is, uh, show number 327. Today we have- Good engine. There you go. Thank you. Wow. Wow. Wow. Need a relation there. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
• 0:30
It's a good, it's a good motor. 327's a good motor. Yeah. Well, a motor would be electric. You're right. I guess- Engine... you were right, you were right the first time. Right. Uh, JK's over there- Hello...
• 0:39
at the, uh, Ride Like a Pirate- Yum... Full Moon Beach Ride. We gotta talk about when the next Full Moon Beach Ride is somewhere along the way here. It's on the list. Yeah, I know. I just- Along the way...
• 0:48
that's why I said along the way. Okay. Ooh. Tony's over there. Okay. John Jay. John Jay. And, uh, and, and Virgin Joe Finney is here today. Hey. Uh, of the show, not necessarily- No comment. [laughs] Don't do that.
• 1:00
No comment. Too early for that. On the show. All right. Well, it's been a month, lots happened. Yeah. Oh, indeed. Who wants to go first? [laughs] Uh, I think just because it's on the top of mine, Santa Rampage.
• 1:14
Yeah, it was good. Uh- Truncated- Yeah, a-... path we did, but- As, as, as Michael and I did it, [clears throat] it was excellent. Yeah.
• 1:25
Just the right length, just the right amount of stops, just the right people to see, and, uh, the thing that- A slight l- and yeah, just, uh, the height...
• 1:35
Not the height, but a, a taste of, of the aggravation at times of, you know- The, the full Monty... the, uh, yeah, the, the rampage warrior.
• 1:45
Like, "Oh, this is the one time a year I actually go and-" Oh, there's a lot of those. Yeah, and- And it just was like, ooh... but, like, everybody- Social nuance was gone.
• 1:53
It was like just somebody blast right through and just knock as many bikes over. Yeah. Like, "Oh, I'm sorry." Mm-hmm. Kinda didn't work nicely. Sorry doesn't make it, lady. I, oh, yeah.
• 2:02
[laughs] I wasn't even my finger- [laughs] I was finger waggy, but yeah, then I did let it pass. So I think everybody I talked to except people I already knew were not from Milwaukee. Hmm. Several people- Oh...
• 2:13
from Iowa- Yep... were awesome. Yeah, yeah. There was a bunch of people from, um, sh- Chicagolandvilleburg. [laughs] Uh, also Waukesha, I guess, is someplace somewhere around here. Yeah, something like that.
• 2:25
Um, but the vast majority of the people, and a lot of them it was their first time. Uh, I'm, I'm just gonna let y'all, you can say thank you to me 'cause it didn't rain. Seems like every- You did-...
• 2:35
one of those damn Santa Rampages I go on, it's a fucking torrential downpour. Well, thanks for not attending. Right? Right? Yeah, thank you, Tony. Yeah. I sat at Amorphic and drank beer.
• 2:43
[laughs] Plus there was snow this year. Yeah, I know. It was beautiful. Yeah. Well, later, yeah. Well, I mean, even before, too. You could ri- there wa- yeah, on the ground and- Yeah.
• 2:51
No, because one of your cursed rides, if it were, like, two degrees colder- We waited and waited... it was j- it would've been a beautiful just snow globe. The fucking coldest- But no... ride home in my life...
• 3:01
just all windy- I know... wet, shitty bikies. A torrential- It was like, mm. I know Joe, so Joe ri- both rides and runs. Yep. And is there worse weather than, like, 35 degrees and not quite snowing and it's wet?
• 3:16
No, that's the worst. For either of you. [laughs] That's miserable. That's the worst. In a steady wind.
• 3:19
'Cause when you're running, your feet are soaked, and you're gross, and you're sticky, and everything is hanging off you. Yeah. Yeah, it doesn't sound pleasant. No. Like, the snow will kind of, like, go around you.
• 3:29
Mm-hmm. It doesn't really cling as much, or if it does, it's, like, on your shoulders, but- You get the hyperspace, uh- Right... uh, frame of mind after a bit. [laughs] Like, woo, woo, woo, woo, woo. Right.
• 3:37
I'm getting highway hypnosis- It's just beautiful... kind of thing. Yes. Yes. Yes. Well- It was good, it was good weather for Santa, though. Yeah. Uh, JK- Yeah...
• 3:43
and I started at one of our traditional stops up at Hollander, although we kind of whoosh, whoosh, whoosh, whoosh, uh, and then met at Nomad. Yeah. And then went all the way down the street to Riganos.
• 3:54
That's, that's when I ran into Dan and Joe. [laughs] Like, "Yeah, I saw Greg at, at, uh, at- At Nomad... Nomad." Yeah. He said he was heading out, going to Roman's. R- Yeah... yeah, it's like, what, five blocks? Maybe.
• 4:06
Yeah. And then we went around the corner- But it was on Brady, and that takes- Brady... yeah. [laughs] Then we went around the corner to Walski's a little bit. Okay. Yeah. Yeah. All right.
• 4:12
And then, uh, the, I heard that one of my friends who bartends at Walski's was gonna be at Squirrel Cage, which I haven't been to in years. Yep. So we went up there. Nice.
• 4:19
And then Bremen, and then Amorphic, and then home. So it, but it was still pretty good ride. Yeah. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Absolutely. Pretty good ride. Yeah.
• 4:27
How did you, Joe- I mean, the id- the idea of g- heading down to, like, the mass at, uh- Lakefront... Lakefront feels kind of, you know, ceremonial. You should do it- It was-... normally... compact.
• 4:37
But it was, like, I got my flavor of, yeah, 'cause I'm like, "Okay, I only got, like, two traveling beers with me 'cause waiting in line is just way too much." [laughs] Or to put it that way.
• 4:47
And same thing for the bathroom or- Yeah... port-o- Challenge... or whatever. Yeah. Although the ba- the ba- And it's so tempting-... bathroom I went in Clay-...
• 4:53
mocking thing 'cause there's a river right next to you just mocking you. Yeah. You could just be turned and y- whee. You ever been to Holland? Der? Yeah. No. [laughs] Der. Or like Amsterdam or other- No...
• 5:05
they have outdoor pisseries that drain right into the canal. Oh, my. It's very surreal to wa- and they're in circles, so you walk up and there's eight other people taking a leak- And they just go right into that water...
• 5:15
right in public, and it goes right into the canal. But you're just, like, right in public in front of everyone. Didn't they- Just, like, whipping it out. I loved it...
• 5:20
didn't they get any, like, clue from the Seine in France how polluted it got? It's way too close to the ocean from, compared to the Seine. Oh, okay. Ah. [laughs] I mean, it's out. So, so this is polluting the ocean, too.
• 5:31
It's just gonna take- Sure... a lot longer to do it. We're all polluting the ocean. We're pooping. Mm. It ends up in water somewhere, eventually makes its way to the ocean. [laughs] Does it, though?
• 5:39
I thought it just went to Jones Island- Yeah... and it died there. Yeah, right. It's still a- Then it turns- It's still a vacuum... then it turns to m- Yeah, they still make as, what make- Melorganite... Melorganite.
• 5:46
Yeah. Yeah. And they make a lot of money off our poop. And Lake Milort. Which is free. Doesn't it go through- Right... a bunch of filters- The poop is free... somehow out to New Berlin and then back again?
• 5:54
Well, it's- And then we're all like, "Oh, yes." If it would stay out there, that would be great. [laughs] There always seems to be something about the dam- How, okay, Joe-... New Berlins... how did your, uh, rampage go?
• 6:03
What did y- how d- What route did you take and- Yeah, well, I like to go to the start. It's just so fun to see all the, the mass of Santas. But it's not super fun biking so slowly. Mm, thank you.
• 6:15
It, uh, yeah, it is- Testify... hard to do. Oh, yes. But there were some people who it was their first time- Mm-hmm... and I was like, "All right, well- Right... first time you gotta go.
• 6:23
You gotta do the, you gotta do the whole thing." So I went down there, made our way up to Nomad, and then from there it's kind of our own thing. Mm-hmm.
• 6:32
Did Nomad, had a drink, then went to Lakefront, did the classic, you know, stumbled around. If we find a table, we'll sit down. If we don't, we'll just go m- move along. [laughs] We found a table.
• 6:42
You know, had some beers, had some, uh, cheese curds, had some fries. Nice. Was that a Santa Rampage when we got yelled at for doing skids on the five-gallon bucket lids there? Yeah. Yeah.
• 6:51
When Russ came out, he's like, "You can't do that." We're like, "Y- you're spoiling our fun, man." [laughs] Yeah, when he, when he threw, he threw it in, in- Do you want to-... into the dumpster [laughs] Yeah...
• 6:58
and- We offered to let him try... and then I jumped into the dumpster and grabbed it- [laughs]... and then came back out [laughs] and then he threw it back in the dumpster again. It, it was talent shows.
• 7:05
It was like who could do the longest front wheel skid on the five-gallon bucket lid, which was classic- [laughs]... because most people are gonna fall down. Yeah, yeah. Including Kenny Nielsen did that.
• 7:15
[laughs] But, but was Elmer there this year? Yes. Did you guys see Kenny? Nice. Yeah, we saw Kenny. We saw Brenda. We saw the Harts peoples. El Rongo Jeff. Yeah, El Rongo. I s- saw Scanlon. Yep. Yeah, it was a good...
• 7:27
It was, again, it was a good thing and, uh- Nice... I, I think w- so there was a lot of, on the interwebs today and from- [laughs]... the bike fed about if you didn't pay- You're on the naughty list...
• 7:41
you're on the naughty list. [laughs] Well, to be fair, we didn't do their ride per se- Right... but we did ride around as Santas and- You mean like it used to be... so, right.
• 7:51
And what I, the, one of my favorite things, especially after, like, Lakefront or after Great Lakes Distillery, where it's usually kind of the ending point, is that clumps of 8, 10, 20 people go in all different directions- Mm-hmm...
• 8:03
and about, you know, 7:00 at night you're seeing Santas everywhere in the city- Yeah... going to whatever local pub tappery they wanna go to. And I think that's awesome. Well, Amorphic had a influx of Santas. Oh, yeah.
• 8:14
Like, it went from zero to, like, 80. Oh. It was awesome. What time was that? That place is great. Uh, 1:00. Okay. Well, yeah, you were there early. It was their... Was it their- I opened it...
• 8:24
was it their birthday party? Yeah. But Cleone had to work. Oh. She had to work at noon. I'm like, "Okay, I'll drop her off at 11:45."
• 8:31
Molly and I drove around the block a couple of times and we're like, "All right, let's go in." No one there. And then we walked in. They're like, "We're not open yet." Just the one guy scratching at the door.
• 8:36
And it was like three minutes to noon, and of course they were like joking of course. Yeah. Yeah. So what do you think of the new, uh, decor in there? Um,
• 8:45
I, I probably insulted Steven when I pointed out that his palette wall is really seriously outdated. Oh. I'm like, "Dude, that's so 10 years ago now. Just do something else." But- He's got that, that vibe...
• 9:01
I like the lounge in the back now with the couches. Yes. That's pretty cool. That's nice. Um, I, I, it's, it's, it's nice though. Realistically, I'm not there to look at the decor though.
• 9:13
I'm there to drink excellent beer. Right. And they are arguably the best beer... They're the best beer in the state right now- Within, like-...
• 9:19
and probably- They're definitely the best beer within 300 feet of this podcast. [laughs] Absolutely. [laughs] 'Cause only 400 feet the other way is the other one, but- Yeah.
• 9:27
[laughs] All right, let's wrap up Global Fat Bike Day with this. If you missed...
• 9:32
Well, this is Santa Rampage and Global Fat Bike Day wrapped into one, because it was also Global Fat Bike Day on the first Saturday of the month, the 6th, so we were fat biking. Yeah.
• 9:41
Uh, but if you missed A, Global Fat Bike Day, you can still go to Des Moines and they're doing Intergalactic Fat Bike Day on [laughs] Saturday the 13th.
• 9:50
And if you missed Santa Rampage, they're doing it in Madison- That is-... on the 13th... that always intrigues me Next Saturday... which would be- This Saturday... Saturday up and coming here. Yeah, yeah.
• 9:58
That one would intrigue me. Yes. It's, like along the lines of how- As long as there's a zeekal... yeah, or like how- Right... a fat tire tour of Green Bay would be.
• 10:05
And if you don't necessarily- I'm like, I know this geography. I know this map... want to do Santa Rampage- I don't know those... on, in Madison, or if you do, what Sunday? We're leading into Sunday? Do tell. Pie ride.
• 10:18
Oh yeah, pie ride. That's a good one. I haven't done a pie ride for, like, six years. I have not in ages. I'm not even sure if there's been- Uh, Ian invited me. Yeah. Oh, funny Ian story real quick.
• 10:29
I'm letting the sauna warm up, get a phone call from Ian. Sauna talk with Tony. It was gonna be sauna talk with Tony. You knew it was gonna come. Yeah, it was gonna wait till the end. Just went. We'll go now.
• 10:37
And I'm like- [laughs] Sauna man... I'm sitting there and it's not warm enough that I don't have to leave my phone outside, and Ian calls. He's like, "Are you in the sauna?" "Yes, I am." He's like, "Can I come?"
• 10:47
I'm like, "Of course." Ian comes over, does two quick sessions of the sauna. It was Thursday night when it was pretty wickedly cold. Hashky and I spend a little more time in. He gets out and he's like, "You know what?
• 11:02
I'm just gonna ride home." I'm like, "Aren't you gonna put your clothes on?" "Nah, I'm fine." [laughs] In his shorts and a backpack, that dude gets flip-flops, gets on his fucking bike and rides home. Yep.
• 11:16
That's classic. It was like- Classic, classic Ian... 14 degrees out. I'm like, "Dude." Yeah, that was cold. It was a cold day. It was a cold one. Oh my God. I'm like, "You're an animal."
• 11:22
Well, he s- he does swim in the lake, like, every day of the year, I think. Yeah. He's a machine. Really? As long as he can get into the water- Yeah... he'll swim in it. Right.
• 11:29
He's a g- yeah- With the i- He does a bunch of funny things... the ice shelf might- Continuing sauna talk, did you see the sauna, the great big sauna down at the Lakefront at McKinley Arena? Mega Tory again. Oh, yes.
• 11:37
Yes, I've seen it. It's, and then they- They've got the walk out... yep, and then they cut open a section of Lake Michigan. You can get on a ladder and go into Lake Michigan, come out and get back in. Mm-hmm.
• 11:45
It holds like 45 people, something like that. That's the c- that's the classic, like, Scandinavian way- Yeah, exactly... to do it. Yeah. For sure.
• 11:50
And it's apparently just shy of 200 degrees, so a lot of people, you better build up to that, speaking from experience. [laughs] That's hot. That's hot. That's a good way to stop your heart- 180's nice... I would think.
• 11:59
No, it's not bad. Jumping into the water, I'd say. 180's nice, 190's great. Yeah, getting into the water after that could stop a heart.
• 12:05
Well, when I, when I at one time in the very distant past belonged to a health club- They had a sauna, and then you could just go out and pull this big ring, and this big thing of water would just blast you.
• 12:16
[sighs] Love that. Yeah, so- Let's love that... and it was c- it was cold, but I don't think it was not quite ice. Last night I had, like, full steam. That's my favorite.
• 12:23
Come out, get the snow on me, like, let the snow fall on you if it's snowing, and go back in. Oh, favorite. That was- Sauna talk...
• 12:31
so let's, uh, let's fi- so I, E- Ian is Pie Ride, and that is starting down at the Colectivo at the Lakefront, I believe. Yeah, yeah. The, the idea here is that they've arranged mostly people's houses- Yeah...
• 12:42
that they stop at, and people make pie. And you eat pie at the house, and then you hang out there for a while, and you move on to another house. I know Annie Oatmeal is on it right down the street here, for sure.
• 12:50
She's told me she's made many pies already. [laughs] She's a good pie maker too. She's a good pie maker. Makes some good pie. So a final Ian story, just real quick- I know what's coming...
• 12:58
is that he and I don't know who else are doing a muffin- The muffin exchange... the muffin exchange at- The muff-... the old co-op, which, uh, unfortunately went the way of Rogue Ales. [laughs] Wait. Closed.
• 13:10
Oh, ding, ding, ding. [bell ringing] Oh, you might- Well, you, you've said it, so it should hit. Top of the hill. Top of the hill, folks. So in, [laughs] in honor of- Boom. Yep, yep, yep, yep.
• 13:19
It's gonna maybe come out, so be ready for it. In honor of Rogue, uh, the Bat Scratch, uh, hazy IPA 6.7 ABV canned in 2024, which might be why- That's when, yeah-... it's a little lively...
• 13:32
the salad, the salad days of 2024. [laughs] That might be a little lively. It, it- Good year, good year... you know what? It's still not bad, though. Mm. It hasn't deteriorated- The form so far has been great...
• 13:41
[laughs] like some of them are. So yeah, Rogues, oh, what a bummer that they shut down. They really did make a lot of good beer. Yeah. And for 37 years, too. I'd be s- That's a long time...
• 13:52
I'd be surprised if the brewmaster doesn't come m- make something somewhere else, 'cause why, you know- Right... get rid of a guy that makes beer- I was still in high school when they opened... this good? Yeah. Yeah.
• 14:01
Tropical and citrus. I wasn't even born yet. [laughs] Well, Joe wasn't born yet. Were you born yet? What year? '88. No. Oh. Youngin'. Of course not. Yeah. My doctor said I should be born as young as possible, so.
• 14:13
[laughs] Good idea on that guy. Yeah. He's really thinking. All right. Let's, uh... then we can, uh... What can we do here? We can... Oh, have, have... Who said, "Have you checked your seat post?" Me.
• 14:24
That was a good call because- Right? It's seat post weather... it is, and you want to make sure your seat post doesn't seize, don't you?
• 14:31
It's a good time to check your seat post, folks, especially if you have an aluminum one and a steel frame. Right. Pop that sucker out of there. Got one of those at home right now. Put a luberification on it. Still stuck.
• 14:40
Oh, in the Univega? In the Vega. Mm. I talked to Scanlon about his too on the, on his, uh, his Moon Doggy. What's that big thing called? Moon Lander. Moon Lander. Yeah. [laughs] Moon Doggy.
• 14:48
It's still, it's been semi-reamed out, but it still can't put a post in there. I'm like, "Mm." That sucks. I got a reamer, though. We can make it that size. Although, I heard a good tip today.
• 14:59
Besides lubing your post, taking a tube. [laughs] Wait a second. It's- Man. You know what I'm talking about, you gutter minds. [laughs] Um, taking a little piece of inner tube- Mm. Uh-huh...
• 15:10
and putting it between, you know, putting it as, like, a, well, I'm, I'm on it. We're on it now. Putting a condom on- Oh... your seat post to frame. Like a lizard skin.
• 15:18
Like a lizard skin, but you can just use a tube usually if you get a narrow, you know? It's not a, it's... Yeah, I think it's more condensation that does it than it is- Oh... water running down there, but it can't hurt.
• 15:27
That's what I figured. I don't mind your idea. I thought it was a pretty neat idea. It's your galvanic corrosion. You don't want that. Exactly. Yeah, no. Don't want that at all. That, that shit's bad.
• 15:34
Not on your post, for sure. Yeah. For sure not on your post. Absolutely not. But pretty much anywhere else, I think, but maybe you need it. All right.
• 15:40
To wrap up Milwaukee stuff until we get to it later, uh, All Messed Up is coming in February again. It's s- so there's a lot of cool things- It's a neat show...
• 15:49
a lot of cool things about Milwaukee, including the Riverwest 24 and whatnot. But All Messed Up, I don't know if it's unique to Milwaukee, but I've never heard of it anywhere else, and it's basically,
• 15:59
whatever it is, 60 people enter this thing, and then they get drawn into bands that they've e- m- you don't know who you're gonna get into the band with. Right. And you get what? A week to pr- practice?
• 16:08
No, you get till February. Okay. It's, like, in mid-February. Yeah. So you get six weeks or whatever, but you have to do an original song. You have to do a cover.
• 16:16
There's s- some kind of rules, and you do three or four songs, and there's a showcase Friday and Saturday nights, so you get to see however many bands that is. A dozen bands, I think it ends up being, approximately.
• 16:28
At the Linneman's. Yes, at Linneman's, which is- I've been to that-... an awesome spot... but imagine Steven's gonna do his They Might Be Giants tribute again.
• 16:38
I assume that- Well, the people don't s- ten- tend to do reruns of shows. Yeah. And you, you really, you really can't s- know who you're gonna be with. Can, can I diverge a little bit? I'll do the rerun dance.
• 16:50
[laughs] You made me, you made me think of reruns because did you know The Quills' new album? Oh, the Clash? Oh, yes. The all Clash covers. All Clash covers? Yeah. It was, Von Munns played it last week.
• 16:58
I was there when they were doing it live. Yes, we were there. We were there. We were there. Yeah. I was, I was there. Doing it live. Yes, them was awesomes. So was- And they also played Gorilla M- Gorilla Ghost...
• 17:10
Ghosts- Yeah... and a couple others, but yeah, they're- I knew Von Munns parked far away when that, that local live was because it's longer than he usually is, which means he had to go find his car and plug his meter.
• 17:20
Oh, okay. And have a smoke. [laughs] And have a smoke. Well, uh, okay, one more Milwaukee thing. I, I started this newsletter thing called Milwaukee City Lights, which
• 17:33
last week the spotlight Tuesday thing was The Wiggle Room when Von Munns was spinning vinyl at The Wiggle Room. [laughs] Right. Right on. Had some pictures from that. I'll talk more- It's a great place...
• 17:44
about this probably the next time we're on the show. It's just getting going, but it's sort of a what to do in Milwaukee and some cool spots, and not like your normal everyday spots, but more spots I like more.
• 17:56
Underbelly, more punk rock, more- Mm-hmm, mm-hmm, mm, mm... whatever. Less, um, savory, kinda. [laughs] One Ear Neighbors, uh- That's Joey's pointing that for the people listening at home... yeah.
• 18:09
Well, there's a camera right there. Well, that's- Yeah, but people are listening at home, Tony. Um- Use the words. Oh my God. Mental blank. Paint the word picture. Uh, Paul?
• 18:18
The, he's a graphic designer, but he's also a DJ. Dave. Dave. [clears throat] He just told me about a place, David, yep, about a place he DJ'd at over on National or something. There's like a hidden club over there now.
• 18:33
Really? You gotta go through like a side door to get to it, and they've had, like, they're starting to get decent bands and stuff. But he DJ'd a gig there and- Huh... we should find out more of it for the next show.
• 18:43
Yeah, we- I'll message David and find out... we should do that, 'cause that'll be the, whatever, the second- Yeah... week in January sometime. Yeah. Shout out Dave- Yeah... did the art for Santa Rampage.
• 18:50
Oh, he did this year. Ah. He did. I did not know that. So. He's a good guy. He's a fun guy to ride with. Yeah, he's cool. Uh, I was excited when he- We're neighbors...
• 18:58
he had a, a single speed Cannondale because his derailleur hanger broke off [laughs] And they made it just a single speed. Oh, I know that life. Like, okay. That'll- I know that life. [laughs] Yeah.
• 19:08
That's why I go with single speeds- Once, once stuff doesn't work, uh-... when sus- when it's possible to make it single speeds... then you can work it a different way. Yeah.
• 19:13
All right, well this is- I was following somebody on the Santa Rampage who's, uh, I think it was a Schwinn. It sounded like it was converting, auto-converting into a one bike [laughs] On the ride.
• 19:23
Live, live on this ride. [laughs] Yeah. All right. This is a little section of the show I like to call let's get to know Joe. Me? Yes, Joe. Joe Feeney, right here. As we point- At Joe... at Joe. There he is.
• 19:34
[laughs] Checkpoint Joe Joe. Uh, so we've known Joe for a while, since Amorphic days basically. That's kinda where we started seeing Joe. Yeah. Uh, he's a tech guy, a little programmer-ishy thing and- Yeah...
• 19:45
I don't know exactly what your real job is, but, uh- It's in the, uh, software world, making, making software. Yeah So, um, you are a runner and also a cyclist. I do. I cycle more for function to work. Okay.
• 20:00
I work downtown, and so that's... I mean, it beats driving. Hell yeah. What's your route downtown?
• 20:06
I go Humboldt to Locust to the Oak Leaf, take it all the way down to Michigan, which is now a total nightmare to bike down. Oh, no. Oh, yeah, that's fucked up. Yeah, that's pretty messed up.
• 20:15
You can't e- yeah, you can't even, uh- Just so you know, you can swear on this podcast... [clears throat] Yeah, it is fucked. And you can't- [laughs] Yeah, you can't even like, like ride up the, uh, the grass- Yeah...
• 20:24
and like jump over onto the, uh, the driveway. They got it all blocked. Yeah, yeah. It's like total hell. No, that's what I did. Not even, not even blocked. I mean, it's like hazardous- Yeah...
• 20:33
like drops, like mm, and- 'Cause that's what I did for a couple of days. [laughs] Then I was like, "Oh, should I, uh... Is this a cyclocross race now?" [laughs] Yeah, impromptu cyclocross.
• 20:41
I mean, why am I going up over the grass? [laughs] I know. I ended up going up the damn steps, and I'm going like, "Where the fuck- Bike, bike... am I coming out of?" I know, I know.
• 20:45
And all of a sudden I'm back on, um, Wisconsin. Right. Well, I just pick up my bike- But, but you-... and walk over the construction site, and I'm like, "I'm not a car. I can just- Tough. Yeah...
• 20:52
go over this stuff," and then I'm on the other side and then I have to cross back, but, um, yeah. Mainly I'm biking for function, but I do love biking around. I mean, I bike to Amorphic, bike around as much as I can.
• 21:02
And you live in the neighborhood here, relatively- Right, yep... close by. Yeah, checkpoint two. I live at checkpoint two. Oh, there you go. Yeah. Right on. Um, so that's the cycling part.
• 21:10
And the running part, you seem to do that a little more- Yeah, that's more of a fitness thing because I'm super lazy, right? So I'm like, "I know I gotta do some fitness."
• 21:18
And if I'm biking, I'm gonna bike as chill as I can. Like, I'm not looking to elevate my heart rate, not at all. But if I'm- That's a, yeah, that's a good, uh, base- Do you- That's your base layer... road?
• 21:27
Yeah, I'm just chilling. Sidewalk run- I'm just chilling... trail run, everything?
• 21:30
Sidewalk, I mean, usually city runs, again, but I'll run out, you know, a distance, half the distance I wanna run and I'm like, "Well, I have to go home." Right. [laughs] What, am I gonna call an Uber? Put it in neutral.
• 21:40
So I'm like, "All right, guys, I have to run back." So that's- So- It's just an, a very quick, easy workout 'cause I'm lazy and I wanna optimize my time.
• 21:46
In, in case you don't know, I talk a lot and- It's not called Triple T for nothing... I have lived across the street from this same couple with a husky. They have yet to talk to me at all. [laughs] What?
• 21:59
And he runs past me every fucking day on the Locust Bridge. On your left. Today, today I actually- On your left. No, he's coming towards me. Oh. Today I pulled over- On your right...
• 22:09
and stopped so he could get past me 'cause there was snow. He didn't even acknowledge me. I'm like, "Dude, you are the most unfriendly fucking human being in the world." I'm your neighbor, bro.
• 22:18
I'm like, and, and he has to know. In a whole other world. He's like- You know? It's like just... And it's not, it's... Even if he's not running, if he's outside his house, he doesn't even acknowledge us.
• 22:27
Yeah, that's wild. That's wild. And I think he owns the house directly across the street from me. Hmm. He's young, he's tattooed. I'm like- Yeah, that should make him cool...
• 22:35
well, it should at least make him my fucking neighbor. [laughs] All right. Didn't that happen with your last place? You had, like, a curmudgeon across the street? No, you're talking about Sarah.
• 22:43
She's a curmudgeon everywhere. I don't know. That one seemed like... I don't know. In my head- Sounds like you got a curmudgeon in the making... I, yeah. Maybe. You gotta get on that- Yeah... Christmas card list.
• 22:52
What are you gonna do? You gonna crack in? You gonna break in one day or not? I mean, they have the cutest husky in the world. Yo, Scrooge. I miss their dog. Scrooge Grinch.
• 22:58
Their hu- their dog looks at me like, "I really want you to pet me." Maybe his heart- Like all dogs do... will grow 10 times that day... right? [laughs] Er. It's frustrating. [laughs] It's frustrating.
• 23:08
'Tis the season- Yeah... for those thingies. [laughs] All right. So as a result of Joe running and also cycling- And year round. I run year round... year round. Year round. Yeah, that's kind of the key to this thing.
• 23:20
I like to make a point to the, that I'm outside year round. I, treadmills function. I, I understand that they do, but- That's like bike trainers. Fuck that... I- Well, you're kinda preaching to the choir here...
• 23:29
  yeah, fuck that... I can't, I won't.
• 23:30
I'm like, I get it, but for me, I would not run, like if I could just like flip a switch and be good, you know, be, "Oh, yeah, yeah, good, you got your little workout in once a week," or whatever, I mean, like I probably would do that because I don't wanna have to do it.
• 23:44
So I'm like the outdoor bit is a little more interesting and the- Mm-hmm... in the basement, in the whatever on the treadmill, I just can't get over it. I just am like, "No, I'm not gonna do that."
• 23:53
[laughs] I had a, I had a roommate who had one of the NordicTrack things- Mm-hmm... from about, uh, 15- Oh, yeah... 20 years-ish ago.
• 24:02
But it had like, uh, you would, like, uh, you know, running through, uh, Pompeii- Yeah... kinda thing. But it was also a very, like the screen was about the size of the- Right... the, you know, six by...
• 24:14
So I was like, "Oh," you have to really focus and something like that. Yeah, it's in your mind. [laughs] Yeah, yeah. And I, I kinda- You gotta focus in...
• 24:21
would get, get the idea of it It makes it a hell of a lot more interesting than just going blah, blah, blah, looking at a white wall- Mm-hmm. Right... you know, in a basement.
• 24:30
[clears throat] But still, yeah, it, it was, it drove me a little nuts. Sure. It- Be- being, well, [laughs] being with that. Yeah. I'm going like, "Come on, my man." It's like, "Go outside." Yeah. "Run. Go outside.
• 24:43
Bike." I mean- Enjoy some fresh air... he, he had the indoor things, and I'm like, "No, no, there's an outdoors here." Yep. I mean, a- not to get to philosophy- You gotta...
• 24:51
not to go into a philosophy- If- if-ification... little tangent, but I do think that there's something, there is this tendency for people, maybe younger people, about, like, placelessness. Is that a thing?
• 25:02
Where it's just like, "Oh, I can just be generic, work out in my generic space, in my generic-" Sounds terrible...
• 25:07
and it's like, no, go outside where the weather changes and you have to fight it and you have to- Mm-hmm... figure it out. Interact with people. And you see people. Right. You see dogs. You see your neighbors.
• 25:17
You see people on the screen. Yeah. No. [laughs] That's nothing. That's a AI generated- Right... Peloton, yada, yada, yada- Nice... song or whatever...
• 25:25
I, I almost got sucked into setting my trainer up at home in the basement this year. Oh. And I haven't done it yet, and I not gonna, either way. I'm gonna steal your damn tools. Not gonna do it. Yeah.
• 25:34
I'm gonna break in there like a awesome bridge. Well, I'm like, there's a time, and, and maybe it's like when the AQI is really bad, then I'm like- Hmm... "Fine, fine. Okay," you know?
• 25:43
Y- it's like really bad outside and you're coughing or whatever. Right. I get it. Like, there's people who just need to do it, and I'm like, "Whatever." That's, but that's not for me.
• 25:49
I officially let you take a break on those days. I won't do it. Exactly. Yeah. Yeah. You don't- Just relax... have to work out... maybe get some beer. See, that's- Get a Murphy.
• 25:56
I just take a little bit longer biking in, right? Yeah. Just take it a little easier, so I'm not huffing and puffing. Yeah. Yeah. Right. [laughs] Take a lap.
• 26:01
So here, so here's, here's why we're talking about Joe running and, and cycling, is he's made an app on both your, uh- Oh, wow... your iPhone and your Android device- Mm-hmm... that basically you tell it
• 26:15
temperatures and whatnot. You can go through it a little bit. Mm-hmm. I- we've got kind of a little screenshot, so maybe we'll kinda try and run through it.
• 26:21
But it, it s- it tells you the weather and gives you a recommendation on what to wear for that day. Yeah. And, uh, yeah. Or, or what to wear.
• 26:32
I mean, maybe, maybe tell us a little bit about it in your words, and then I've got a couple questions, 'cause I've been using it. I don't know if you guys have used it yet. It didn't install for me. Right there.
• 26:41
Oh, stop it. Michael has it on his phone. It works. Um, I'll say- [laughs]...
• 26:46
like I said, I'm lazy, and so any excuse I have where I'm like, "Well, it's kinda raining outside," or, "Um, I don't know, the weather keeps jumping around," and I'm just like, "I don't know what I would wear, so I'm just not gonna run."
• 26:57
You know? [laughs] Like, I'm always, like, looking. I'm my own worst enemy [laughs] and so I'm like, if I just have this app and I look and it says, "Put this on, you'll probably be fine."
• 27:04
Might be warm, but you can always, like, kinda, you know, pull a layer off or two. Yeah. Better warm than cold.
• 27:09
Yeah, better warm than cold, and then you're not gonna absolutely hate yourself for getting ha- you know, a couple miles away from your house and be stuck.
• 27:14
Um, so I just kinda- Or at least have a, you know, have a, a sack with you. Yeah, something. To, well, I mean, to, if you're gonna peel. A satchel. Yeah. Oh, yeah, yeah. If you're gonna peel.
• 27:23
Especially if you're biking, yeah. Just throw that in there, or the opposite direction of it. Right. Right. Going like, "Oh, hey, I'm gonna need another... I'm gonna need the layer." Yeah.
• 27:30
I have a thing that is, like, the layer. Mm-hmm. Like, one of these kinda shirts. It's kinda collapsible and it just, like, fits anywhere. It would fit in a damn cargo pocket. Yeah.
• 27:40
[clears throat] And it's like, [mumbles] gotta bring the layer just in case. That's it. Mm-hmm.
• 27:44
I feel like that's like with me with gloves, because as soon as I start running, I'm al- I'm cold for maybe a mile and a half. Mm-hmm. My hands are always cold, and then they get hot. Yep.
• 27:53
And I'm like, "Well, take my gloves off- Let me do it then... my pockets. No big deal." But I would rather the whole run they be cold because they never warm up. If, if you didn't have gloves, right. Exactly.
• 28:00
Yeah, I could do that. They never warm up, so that's kinda the balance there. Yeah.
• 28:03
And as I was making this up, I was like, man, and then, you know, we heard from friends and people who bike and they're like, "I just want something to tell me what to do."
• 28:09
[laughs] You know, I, whether I follow it or not is, is separate. Hmm. But I just want something to be like, "At least this," and you're like, "Fine, I have [laughs] that. I can go." And so I will...
• 28:19
Well, that's what I'll do, is I'll just be like, "All right, I'm gonna go on a run." I'll pull up the app, look at it, be like, "Hmm. Okay." You know? And then I'll just go and I'll go on a run.
• 28:26
And as I was building the app, I was thinking, "All right, what are we gonna do? We're gonna figure out how tall are you-" Just- "... what's your, you know, how your resting heart rate, how..."
• 28:34
Like, all, you know- [laughs]... what are all the things to determine your... And then it was like, wait a minute, what if we can distill all that down into one question? Yeah.
• 28:41
And so the, uh, the onboarding process is basically like, do not go outside if it's severe weather, right? [laughs] That's always like a, come on. Like, if it's a tornado- Right.
• 28:48
It's, it's obviously pulling weather from somewhere- Window... right? So it- Yeah, OpenWeatherMap. Okay. Can, can you build into it where if it's, like, say, 96- Mm-hmm... you just say, "Naked"? [laughs] No. Hmm.
• 29:04
Not yet. [laughs] You gotta have a switch in there that just says, like, how low are you willing to go with the layers? All right. But we do, if it is 96, which I, you know, I like to...
• 29:13
'Cause I'm always testing this, and obviously you can get winter tests now, but I'll test Perth. So I'll be like, "Oh, it's very different weather," you know? And it'll swing back and forth, which is... Oh, that's cool.
• 29:22
So this is your- Yeah... this is- Worldwide... worldwide? Worldwide. Very cool. Yeah. So, so this is- You can do it anywhere. And you're plugging in data from weather sources? Yeah, OpenWeatherMap. Okay.
• 29:30
Yeah, so that's, uh- That kinda fits in with our OpenWeather miners. And so this was, is one of my questions, and he's gonna talk about it, is distilled it down into one question- Mm-hmm...
• 29:42
that's gonna help it pick based on your preference of this question, and that is? When are you comfortable running or riding in shorts? Like, it, can you do it in the 30s or the 40s or the 50s or the 60s? Yeah.
• 29:55
Whatever, yeah. The block of, you know- Yeah... roughly 10 degrees Fahrenheit. Yeah. And that's kinda the idea of w- how precise are we getting here? Mm-hmm. Right. Like, we're not getting to the individual minutiae.
• 30:06
Like, you're not an [laughs] Olympic athlete here.
• 30:08
You don't have 1,000 pieces of clothing that you're ever gonna be able to, like, nail, because especially with running, it's you'll run one direction and you're like, "Wow, I'm hot," and then you'll turn around and you're like, "Oh, the wind was to my back the whole time."
• 30:19
Mm-hmm. "Now the wind is in my face." And it, it just- And it sucks... it sucks, and it's just hard to really nail it perfectly. So it's like, don't try to be perfect, right? Don't let perfect be the enemy of good.
• 30:28
Just- Pick where are you comfortable in shorts? 'Cause, at least for running for sure, that's a big one of, like, where's your shorts temp? And for riding, you know, it's like, when are you putting on the pants?
• 30:37
You know, are you putting on the pants, or are you kind of like a fair weather, warm weather kind of person? Which is, you know, ev- and everybody has their number. Yes.
• 30:44
And from there you can kinda tell, all right, that's kinda your adjustment. That's your, I would say, your course adjustment. Mm-hmm. And then after that- Good call, Mike... you, you gotta go for it. Oh, look at that.
• 30:54
It's, it's been a week- Course adjustment... it's been going. [laughs] Whoa. And so that's, I would say that's the course adjustment right there, where it's like the big- [laughs]...
• 31:01
the big rough number of this is roughly where we're gonna set you. And it literally just, it shifts the whole weather up and down. Gotcha. Yeah. And then there's also refinements.
• 31:11
So after you do an activity, you can go in there at the bottom there and it says post ride feedback.
• 31:17
And if you tap that, it's gonna s- basically there you scroll up again, there's gonna be sliders for each different part of your body, and you can decide that was I was too hot, I was too cold. Yeah. So that, yeah.
• 31:29
So what I discovered, because I've been trying it out, is that initially I said, I don't really, I, I just don't. It isn't that I'm not comfortable, but I never ride below 60 with shorts on. Mm-hmm. Yeah. So, you know.
• 31:41
I agree with that. But- Knickers... then I, then I discovered that while it was giving, it was giving me advice, and I've been doing this a long time so I kinda know what I need anyway. Mm-hmm.
• 31:51
That was a little bit on the warm side. So if I said, "Well, I'd wear shorts in the 50s," then it would be a little bit more like, you know, for me in the s- you know what I'm saying? Or- Yeah... or the 40s.
• 32:02
You can just shift it. But yeah, this- You can always go in there and change it... this slider deal here- Mm-hmm... says, uh, on the, it's on that specific run, right? That did it. And it would say, "How was your head?
• 32:11
Was it hot, okay, or cold? Body, hands, legs, feet." So it can... Is it learning? It's complicated and simple at the same time.
• 32:22
So the problem that I ran into, 'cause people are always like, "I wanna be able to give feedback and, and give adjustments."
• 32:27
So the problem is you don't want to over fit is, like, one of the problems that I ran into here, which is like, well, if I was too hot on this day, it was raining at night in the wintertime. Mm-hmm.
• 32:37
You don't want that, well, I ran hot. You know, you don't want that to then influence when it's super hot out and it's like, well, you said you were hot that one time in the winter.
• 32:45
It's like obviously those two things are different. Sure. So you have to try to bin the type of weather based on, like, day, night, hot, cold-ish. Interesting. Cool. So now you have these rough four bins.
• 32:56
And so when you say the slider is like numbers, but it goes from like one, two, five, six or something. You know, it jumps up to six degrees, and those are like degrees Fahrenheit roughly.
• 33:06
And so it will put just a minus in the gloves compartment on the temperature for that day for that bin, if we call it that. Mine would be whatever makes my hands the warmest. Mm-hmm. Yeah.
• 33:18
It's the only thing that ever gets cold on me. I, I hate getting cold hands. That's the only thing that I get cold on. And you can crank it up there. Yeah. And it will learn.
• 33:24
I mean, that, and it's just for you, so that's not even coming back to me, and I'm not, like, adjusting the algorithm. This is your specific algorithm on your phone. It's just gonna make that adjustment.
• 33:35
So- Just like a microphone... right. So for me right now, it's December 9th as we're doing this. It's 6:30. Well, 6:43, but it was 6:30 when I pulled this up. 4:00. It's 30 degrees out. There's light snow.
• 33:45
Feels like 30, 'cause there's no wind. Um, helmet and cycling cap, right on. Always. Wool neck gaiter. Hell yes. Yeah, I could do that. Thermal long sleeve jersey. Long sleeve jacket. Wearing it. Perfect.
• 33:58
Uh, handlebar covers. More of a glove guy. Thermal bike pants and wind pants. Kinda got those all wrapped into one, uh, Lubinec pants. There you go. [laughs] Remember the Lube pants? I have Lube pants.
• 34:09
Oh, those are so great. And then wool socks, which are the number one- The only thing you should wear... that's the number one winter thing is wool socks. I wear them all summer, dude.
• 34:17
Um, and then shoe covers not so much, because I don't ride with cleats. But, uh- Yeah... that would be, um, probably, uh, Thorogood, uh, work boots. Keen.
• 34:27
Yeah, some sort of wind- [laughs] And I think if you click on those items it'll tell you. Yeah, when it's really cold, it, uh- Oh, yeah... I gotta add in there, I gotta add the idea of- Yeah... it, it's about wind.
• 34:37
'Cause like a lot of- Yeah... times you have these, like, breathable shoes which are great. Yeah. Wind's a deal breaker. Yeah.
• 34:41
Or a deal maker, depending on- And this, and this is, this is something that I hadn't discovered before, is you can push on that, so. Yeah, you can tap on them and, and- Yeah...
• 34:49
it'll tell you why, when and temperature... it's, it's, there's so many, this is like an onion. Mm. So many layers- Yeah... of this thing. Um, so w- Well, one thing, and talking about layers here.
• 34:59
If you go on, if you tap later, like, if you have a regular... Like, I have a run every Tuesday night at 8:30 PM. Are you a Hasher? No. So you gotta go running pretty soon here.
• 35:10
Yeah, I gotta go get on a run eventually, yeah. [laughs] Yeah. That's why you wanted to know how long the show was today. Let's get it really drunk so you can't. [laughs] I know. I forgot. Oh, no, I'll run anyway.
• 35:18
I've done it before. I, I did a whole bar crawl, yeah, after work, and then I went on a run. [laughs] Uh, it's, you know, it worked. Probably helped. Yeah. It was, it was surprisingly good, which is weird.
• 35:27
Uh, but like- [laughs]... you can set in those reoccurring events.
• 35:31
And so you can just kind of pop in here and you'll see at the bottom, at least on mine, on a run I have, like, my Tuesdays, I usually run on a, on a weekend.
• 35:39
And so you can kinda put that in there as a regular schedule, and then you can just, like, tap on it and kind of see looking forward, all right, that's what we're looking at.
• 35:45
If you want to adjust, if it's just you, maybe you wanna shift your run maybe to the next day or... Do you change routes a lot, or are you pretty much set in routes? I try to mix it up as much as possible. Yeah.
• 35:57
But sometimes, yeah, it's, it's cold. I mean, around the block you can't really change it that much. Well, I mean, my deal is, is like for example, I will walk to UWM instead of ride my bike. Yeah. And
• 36:07
I ride my bike almost the same way every day. I walk a different route every day, 'cause I just wanna see the neighborhood. Mm-hmm.
• 36:15
And I'm like, you know, it's just, it's, I, it's weird, but I really enjoy walking to campus from Riverwest. It's like, it's a nice walk. It's, you know... And, and I can't run. I- We see, Nick...
• 36:27
we can talk about that later. I had an injury... prevent me Terribly seen- You watch that injury that- It's called o- old man disease Yeah. No, it's called Liz Frank break- Liz, Liz-... 'cause I'm an idiot...
• 36:35
Liz Frank foot. Oh my God, that was the most painful thing I've witnessed ever, I think. Let's not get into it, please. All right. Moving, moving on. You know who's hurting themselves more than you, though? Hmm. Fat Sam.
• 36:47
Oh, I saw that knee. He's all the time smashing himself up. What the hell did he do with that knee? I don't know. He just keeps hurting his body a lot. Usually- But he was riding. He was riding and wheelie-ing...
• 36:56
usually involves speed bikes. Liz Frank, he also has a Liz Frank break. Yeah, he did. Yeah, for sure. He didn't have to have screws. He was riding and wheelie-ing on the, uh- Rampage... on the Rampage.
• 37:05
So I think that was an older picture of an older- We've, we've digressed-... damage... into another topic. Well, I'm just- Whoa, whoa, whoa. That, that- Who is gonna give me $2,100 to buy that badass wheelie machine?
• 37:18
Oh, that thing is cool. The Onewheel? You know the Onewheel guys? Oh, yeah. The Onewheel. They've come out with what looks like an old- Mini... gas-powered mini bike. Yeah. But- It's electric...
• 37:29
it's a Onewheel with a front wheel, and it gyroscopes wheelies. You can set it in wheelie mode and you'll just be like, "Vroom, vroom, vroom, vroom." You can literally lift it up and it will ride.
• 37:38
They have video of it riding wheelies, and guys are going like this. It rides dead straight as a wheelie machine. It is wild. That is wild. It's $2,100. You know- It's 32 miles an hour with a 50-mile range.
• 37:50
You wanna- It's something insane... you wanna spend the extra six hundo for the extra range because you wanna ride that thing a lot, I think. [laughs] It, I saw the video on it the other day.
• 37:58
I'm like, "This can't be real." Yeah, I've seen it. I sent it to you immediately. I'm like, "Look at this thing." Right on. Okay, Joe. So, uh, where can people, uh, get this app?
• 38:08
