Transcript
- 0:00Hi, everybody. The Rickster here reported on
- 0:02the Kenny Wallace show. Will our long national nightmare
- 0:06is over. The settlement has been made or
- 0:08has been made. NASCAR and the race teams came
- 0:11together a few hours to go and made a settlement and you know,
- 0:16it's made so many people happy. I mean, what do we know about it
- 0:19so far? We know that number one, the
- 0:23teams are getting Evergreen charters, OK #2 we know that
- 0:27front row and 23 X are going to get back or they'll have their
- 0:32their original charters that they had.
- 0:33So they'll they'll be operating racing this year and next year
- 0:36with the charters. So that's all good.
- 0:38What do we know past that? Really, really nothing.
- 0:40I mean, we won't know anything until they release more details
- 0:44or how many how many details they want to release.
- 0:46But you know, it's a Merry Christmas holy up here, Merry
- 0:50Christmas. You know, one of the one of the
- 0:52first thoughts I had when I heard it settled the guys in the
- 0:56trenches. Let me tell you what I mean by
- 0:57that. For the last few weeks, I've
- 0:59been talking to quite a few people in the garage, right or
- 1:02in NASCAR community. And a lot of those guys are, are
- 1:05the the guys in the trenches. But that I mean the guys that
- 1:08work in the back, the guys that work on these cars, the guys
- 1:11that work in the shops, not, not hierarchy, not executives, not
- 1:14the leaders or owners, which we have had a few of those
- 1:17conversations. But The thing is, the thing that
- 1:20intrigued me when I when I was talking to these guys, they for
- 1:24the most part, they all seem like they were where they did.
- 1:26They told me they were torn. They they had allegiance NASCAR,
- 1:29they had allegiance to the teams and they just didn't really, you
- 1:32know, understand, you know, what side they should really be
- 1:37pulling hard for because they didn't know, like most people
- 1:40didn't even the fans really, we didn't really know.
- 1:42But here's the one thing that bothered me about the whole
- 1:45thing. Each one of those guys to fault
- 1:48told me that they were all nervous about their positions.
- 1:52What's that mean? That means they're they're
- 1:54afraid they're going to lose their job.
- 1:55They're afraid this thing's going to tank, they're going to
- 1:58lose their jobs or it'll be restructured and such where they
- 2:00won't have many employees. They didn't know, but they all
- 2:02had this nagging feeling and and other thing they'd all been told
- 2:07either by a couple of the guys with their owners told them as a
- 2:10group, don't worry, this is all going to be OK.
- 2:13Y'all all got good jobs. Some of those were told by hire,
- 2:16hire management, don't worry, your jobs are safe.
- 2:19Everything is going to be in place.
- 2:21But as a racer, you know, if the racer mentality, you know that,
- 2:25you know, you're 18 hours away of sleeping and waking up
- 2:28saying, guess what, I don't have a job today.
- 2:30That's that had been the case with a lot of the racing
- 2:34industry, but you know, it's pretty stabilized now.
- 2:36But anyhow, those guys were there.
- 2:38There was some some concern, genuine concern that, you know,
- 2:42we might have not have a job. So that makes for a very, very,
- 2:47very Merry Christmas for those guys, for all you guys.
- 2:50And you know who you are, you know, Merry Christmas, man,
- 2:53Your, your jobs are safe, right. So this, you know, this really
- 2:59leads us to OK, where do we go now?
- 3:03You know what, what do we do? Well, you know, as I spoke a lot
- 3:07a couple weeks ago to you guys or a week ago, I see a way for
- 3:13NASCAR to really do or do OK with this.
- 3:16And you know, number one, you're not going to have this bickering
- 3:19in in fighting with amongst the teams and NASCAR.
- 3:21These guys are going to all be on the same page now going
- 3:24forward. They're all going to be together
- 3:26in unison to support the sport and to grow the sport and all
- 3:30that's going to be great. But, you know, we talked about,
- 3:35you know, the bad things could happen with this trial before it
- 3:37happened. We talked about it last week
- 3:39and, and the things that come out of it, it's not going to be
- 3:42good. And, and it's just, you know,
- 3:43we've received a lot of bad press, a lot of things going on,
- 3:46a lot of things being said. And I even talked about, you
- 3:50know, if it goes to appeal, right, the the the ours, I don't
- 3:54know if our sport could would have stood that because of the
- 3:57pressures from the people that financially back this sport and
- 4:01you know, the sponsors and all that.
- 4:02And a good case in point, yesterday, Johnny Morris put out
- 4:05a scathing statement. Johnny Morris, those you don't
- 4:09know, he owns bass pro shops, good guy, right?
- 4:12Started with nothing, built this multi billion dollar company and
- 4:16has been one of the biggest supporters of NASCAR that the
- 4:19financial wise with sponsoring race teams and different races
- 4:22and a lot of things for a long time.
- 4:25And he put out a scathing statement yesterday.
- 4:28And it was really based around the, the, the, the remarks that
- 4:31Steve Phelps made about Richard Childress.
- 4:33And, you know, that's just one small example of what you know,
- 4:40of 1 sponsor that that's really taking a negative view of what I
- 4:43was going on here. And I mean, you, if you're, you
- 4:46know, you don't want to alienate any of your sponsors, especially
- 4:49somebody like Johnny Morris, who is so good for her sport.
- 4:52And that's just one small example of what could have
- 4:54happened, what could have went on.
- 4:55Now I talked about, you know, going forward, it was back up a
- 5:00little bit and we back to the trial thing.
- 5:02We had Hendrick, Rick Hendrick and Roger Penske, we had Heather
- 5:05Gibbs. Those all came forward with
- 5:09their letters that they they shared with Mr. France about
- 5:12wanting these permanent charters.
- 5:14You know, Richard Children was on the stand pretty specific
- 5:19about what he thought we needed that was permanent charters.
- 5:22So that was a big thing and everybody got that all right.
- 5:26It looks like they settled on that, which is good.
- 5:31But you know, moving forward, you know, what are we going to
- 5:34do? What are we going to do?
- 5:36We've we've taken a hit. NASCAR has taken a hit and the,
- 5:39again, I keep going back, go back to this and the big thing
- 5:42is Phelps remarks about children's, well, you know,
- 5:45NASCAR, in my opinion, they have a perfect opportunity to maybe
- 5:52not completely right to ship, but really come out of this
- 5:55thing better. They're they're already going to
- 5:57have momentum. They're going to have all the
- 5:58things behind them. Everybody's going to be working
- 6:00towards the same thing. But some of these, some of these
- 6:03issues are going to have to be addressed, right?
- 6:06And again, it's going to take a couple very tough decisions on
- 6:10NASCAR's part and then, you know, just talk about, you know,
- 6:15the error of our ways. You know, we looked at things.
- 6:18We we understand there are ways we know.
- 6:21I mean, all of us and me, especially me, I know NASCAR
- 6:24intent is their intent is to always grow the sport and make
- 6:28it great. And but no matter who you are,
- 6:30what you do, sometimes you stumble.
- 6:32And a few of these areas, there's no doubt NASCAR stumbled
- 6:35and and they're aware of that. And but I think they could take
- 6:40all of this with a couple very tough decisions to make and, you
- 6:44know, just need a little bit of humble pie.
- 6:46We are in a ways, we want to go forward.
- 6:48We want to gain fans. We want to take care of the
- 6:50fans. We've always had, you know, and
- 6:53to do that, you know, we got to address what what we did wrong.
- 6:58And you know, they can do that. I mean there there's no doubt
- 7:04they can do that now, you know, if they do that and you know,
- 7:08really publicize, you know what they did, what they're doing,
- 7:13what they've done and go about their deal, the thing could get
- 7:18good again. It could it could get very good.
- 7:20I mean, we, you know, as, as Mr. France said on the court, court
- 7:24steps outside the courtroom, you know, we get back to what we do
- 7:28that's doing our business about the racing, concentrating on the
- 7:31racing. And I thought it's pretty
- 7:32striking. His remarks on the on the
- 7:33courthouse square, courthouse steps.
- 7:35You know, we, this is taking so much of their attention away
- 7:38from what they should be doing and that's paying attention to
- 7:41the sport and what's good for the sport.
- 7:44I thought it I thought it kind of funny or or neat, really
- 7:48happy that the video of all those guys in front of the
- 7:51courthouse, you had Michael Jordan, you had Jim France, you
- 7:53had Denny Hamlin, you had Lisa Kennedy France, you had all the
- 7:57lawyers and everybody was smiling and grinning.
- 7:59Everybody was happy and grinning and smiling.
- 8:02And I that kind of tells you that, you know, maybe everybody
- 8:06thought, man, this is not working out in any of his favor.
- 8:09We've got to fix this. And you know, and for all the
- 8:13critics of Michael Jordan, all right, you know, Mike come in
- 8:18with his way of doing things in the NBA and what he saw and
- 8:21thought he could help the sport by changing some of it in his
- 8:24way from June France's side, You know, his sports, his family's
- 8:29daddy's granddaddy or daddy started.
- 8:31His brother ran it. His his little nephew ran it for
- 8:33a while. He's been running for a few
- 8:35years. It's it's you know, it's been a
- 8:36very successful company for what 70 or 80 years?
- 8:39And the way they do things, it's always been successful and no
- 8:43need to change. Well, you know, these two got
- 8:46together and and it and it seems like right now in the onset
- 8:50outset, it seems like, you know, we've achieved something that
- 8:54maybe we never would have achieved and that's something
- 8:57that makes everything better. You know, that's that's what we
- 9:01want. And and and for the critics of
- 9:03Jim France, you know, I can tell you this, Jim France is a good
- 9:06man. He's a good man.
- 9:07He's an honest man. I'll tell you a real quick
- 9:11story. 1990 or sometime by by rookie time in in the in the
- 9:16Western Cup division Western in those days where Daytona to walk
- 9:19through the garage area right there near my my my car in A and
- 9:23a fan walks up to me starts talking a little guy not large
- 9:26in statues got a ball cap on and he starts talking to me as a fan
- 9:30and ask me different questions and you know, just really
- 9:33talking about my car and you know what I think and this step
- 9:36down a pretty neat little conversation and he walked away
- 9:39and I walked in the garage and this guy said back one of my
- 9:42guys said you know him. I said who they said the guy
- 9:44he's talking to. I said no, I don't know him.
- 9:46You don't know who that is. I said no, they said, what's Jim
- 9:49France? I said, who's Jim France right.
- 9:52That's how that's how unknowledgeable I was at the
- 9:55time about these things. But then over the years, just
- 9:58watching him, he's always been in the background, been real
- 10:01quiet. You know, again, his brother and
- 10:04his nephew ran the thing for years.
- 10:06And once all that went away, you know, he had to step in and,
- 10:09and, and, and, and take this thing over.
- 10:11And, you know, it's just, he's been so steadfast through this
- 10:16thing about not giving charters right or not giving permanent
- 10:19charters that and he and explained these reasons on
- 10:22trial. Why are why he was that way.
- 10:25And then for him to go ahead today and give the charters
- 10:29permanent to these guys and I'll work, work the thing out.
- 10:33He understands. He, you know, he's got a big
- 10:35picture. He understands this thing.
- 10:36So anyhow, lot more on this thing to digest and to move
- 10:40forward with, but that was that. Just wanted to give you my
- 10:43initial quick thoughts. And we'll be, you know, Kenny's
- 10:47out on the ocean somewhere on a boat, you know, I'm not sure
- 10:50where he's at, but I'm sure he gets he gets his, he get his, he
- 10:53gets him a little signal. You'll be hearing from him on
- 10:55this real shortly. So anyhow, we'll talk to you a
- 10:58little later guys. Bye bye.
