- 0:13Speaker 1: Hey, lovely, how is everybody today?
- 0:17Speaker 2: Uh?
- 0:17Speaker 1: Oh, I've got music playing in my ear over there.
- 0:21Speaker 1: I hope everybody is having a great day. I'm trying
- 0:24Speaker 1: to figure out why it just gave me the strangest
- 0:27Speaker 1: message when I logged in. But that's okay, guys, hold on,
- 0:36Speaker 1: it is giving me technical difficulties now. I do not
- 0:40Speaker 1: know what's happened anyway. If you know, I am Terierry
- 0:44Speaker 1: True Crime. Thank you so much for being here tonight.
- 0:49Speaker 1: I know this channel has been a busy little channel today.
- 0:54Speaker 1: If you been watching our channel, there is a lot
- 0:59Speaker 1: of stuff going on on this channel. But before we
- 1:03Speaker 1: go any feather, I would like to tell you guys,
- 1:08Speaker 1: I have a very exciting announcement tonight, and to be honest,
- 1:13Speaker 1: it's time to uncork the truth. And no I'm not pregnant.
- 1:19Speaker 1: I am thrilled to announce that our brilliant behind the
- 1:23Speaker 1: scenes brain, the one and only Lama, is officially stepping
- 1:30Speaker 1: out of the producer's chair and into the spotlight as
- 1:35Speaker 1: my new co host for True Crime and Mine Time.
- 1:39Speaker 1: So very excited now, guys, listen. Replacing JT was no
- 1:45Speaker 1: easy feat. He has been a beloved part of this twisted,
- 1:50Speaker 1: crazy little show and a very dear friend, and we
- 1:55Speaker 1: will always raise a glass to him and his unpredictable
- 2:00Speaker 1: wine choices an amount of wine. Okay, but guys, it
- 2:04Speaker 1: is time for a new era, and honey, let me
- 2:07Speaker 1: tell you it's powered by girl power, sarcasm, and lots
- 2:11Speaker 1: of wine. And Guys, Lama has been the secret sauce
- 2:15Speaker 1: behind the scenes, producing, organizing, and occasionally rescuing me from
- 2:21Speaker 1: tech meltdowns. Okay, probably more than occasionally. And now she's
- 2:25Speaker 1: bringing her sharp wit, storytelling, savvy and no nonsense vibes
- 2:30Speaker 1: to the show. Guys, this is the dynamic duo you
- 2:34Speaker 1: didn't know you needed. One part true crime, one part
- 2:37Speaker 1: feminist fire, shaken with sarcasm and served with a generous
- 2:43Speaker 1: poor and we're going to be turning up the volume,
- 2:46Speaker 1: the vibes and the estrogen, and trusts me, it's going
- 2:50Speaker 1: to be a murderously hilariously good time. So, guys, if
- 2:56Speaker 1: we could all grab our glass, let's raise a toast
- 2:59Speaker 1: to girl power and get ready for the boldest season
- 3:02Speaker 1: yet of true crime and wine time. Welcome to the stage, Lama, it's.
- 3:10Speaker 2: Me, Hello, Hello, I'm gonna take that picture of me away.
- 3:16Speaker 2: That's that's something, that's that's a picture. Indeed, Oh my gosh,
- 3:19Speaker 2: thank you so much. That was an introduction. Well, I mean,
- 3:23Speaker 2: if I live up to that hype, Dari, Oh my god,
- 3:25Speaker 2: did you?
- 3:26Speaker 1: I mean I always kind of had in my back
- 3:29Speaker 1: of my mind that you would wind up on camera,
- 3:32Speaker 1: but I'll never forget back to im like, hey, I
- 3:34Speaker 1: will help behind the scenes. I don't want to be
- 3:37Speaker 1: on camera. Don't want to do that. Then you started
- 3:39Speaker 1: helping with hey ho on camera, and you slowly started
- 3:43Speaker 1: dipping your toes and then you start in couch coort
- 3:46Speaker 1: with Llama and now here you are.
- 3:50Speaker 2: And here I am. This is my fourth show of
- 3:52Speaker 2: the day.
- 3:53Speaker 1: I know.
- 3:54Speaker 2: That's what I said.
- 3:56Speaker 1: When I hit go live, it said you're going live
- 4:01Speaker 1: too often? And I was like, how dare you say
- 4:05Speaker 1: that to me?
- 4:07Speaker 2: How dare you? We're just giving the people what they want,
- 4:10Speaker 2: that's right. I am so much just an honor to
- 4:13Speaker 2: become your new co host for True Come in Line Time.
- 4:16Speaker 2: Thank you so much for inviting me into this part
- 4:19Speaker 2: of the world.
- 4:20Speaker 1: I love that, and I love your background. It's very
- 4:23Speaker 1: wind driven and my backgrounds. I think it's gonna be
- 4:29Speaker 1: hilarious sometimes on our shows, especially if you start with
- 4:32Speaker 1: your midday mescato for your trials and then we have this,
- 4:37Speaker 1: I mean, and then you put our sassiness, our snarkiness.
- 4:42Speaker 2: It's gonna be a good time. I don't think you're
- 4:44Speaker 2: gonna leave bored, that's for sure.
- 4:46Speaker 1: Say I don't think and bat guys, right now is
- 4:49Speaker 1: a good time to go on like this video, hit subscribe,
- 4:55Speaker 1: hit that notification bell, because that way you'll know when
- 5:00Speaker 1: we go live.
- 5:02Speaker 2: Yes, do all the YouTube things for us, and share
- 5:06Speaker 2: all social media that we're live right now and this
- 5:08Speaker 2: is where the party is. Yes.
- 5:10Speaker 1: And also if you're listening to this on the podcast app,
- 5:15Speaker 1: please also go and rate the podcast and give us
- 5:20Speaker 1: I hope a five star review. But I don't want
- 5:22Speaker 1: to tell you how to rate us, Okay, I don't
- 5:25Speaker 1: want to tell you what to do. If you're going
- 5:27Speaker 1: to give us a one start, just don't. That's just
- 5:32Speaker 1: like the person who made the comment on your couch
- 5:36Speaker 1: court video that they thought we were rude or that
- 5:41Speaker 1: you will and I was like, I.
- 5:44Speaker 2: Mean, excuse for everybody. It's it's an.
- 5:46Speaker 1: Opinion and it's called my assholes. Everybody has one that's true,
- 5:52Speaker 1: that's true necessary. So welcome to the True Crime and
- 5:59Speaker 1: Mind Time team.
- 6:00Speaker 2: Thank you. I'm so excited. I'm so excited about this
- 6:03Speaker 2: new venture. And you know what, I'm really excited about
- 6:06Speaker 2: what our live show in July.
- 6:09Speaker 1: I know, I can't wait.
- 6:11Speaker 2: Yeah, why don't you tell everybody about it?
- 6:14Speaker 1: So we are going to be at the Seven, our
- 6:18Speaker 1: Blend of seven winery. Do you know why they're a
- 6:21Speaker 1: blend of seven?
- 6:22Speaker 2: Why I don't.
- 6:24Speaker 1: They are a mixed family. Husband, a couple got married,
- 6:29Speaker 1: they each had kids, and then their own kids. So
- 6:31Speaker 1: it's a blend of seven their family.
- 6:34Speaker 2: I love it.
- 6:35Speaker 1: So they're a blended and so I love that. But
- 6:39Speaker 1: we're going to be there July nineteenth, and you tickets
- 6:43Speaker 1: are on sale right now. They start at seven dollars
- 6:46Speaker 1: and fifty cents. You will get to see us live
- 6:50Speaker 1: in person. It is an intimate little setting. It's like
- 6:53Speaker 1: forty people, I think. And we are going to be
- 6:56Speaker 1: covering the Joey LaBute, isn't it right? Case? Yes, and
- 7:01Speaker 1: then we're also going to be covering the Andy Chapman
- 7:05Speaker 1: missing person case at the beginning. But you will get
- 7:09Speaker 1: to sit with us, have drinks with us get to
- 7:13Speaker 1: you know, we'd like to meet people, and I can
- 7:15Speaker 1: tell you I had so much fun doing the Austin
- 7:18Speaker 1: win and getting to meet some of our internet besties
- 7:22Speaker 1: is always fun.
- 7:24Speaker 2: Is it weird that I'm so nervous about this in
- 7:27Speaker 2: person show even though I've been streaming to like thousands
- 7:31Speaker 2: of people one day, but no person.
- 7:35Speaker 1: I'm like, oh in person because like on camera, they
- 7:40Speaker 1: only see us from the waist up. When we're on
- 7:43Speaker 1: the stage, we have to think about where our legs are,
- 7:46Speaker 1: keeping our legs shut? Can they see cords? Is their
- 7:50Speaker 1: spin it? You know they have all of that to see.
- 7:53Speaker 2: I'm very excited to meet everyone. Tickets are going fast.
- 7:57Speaker 2: It's a small venue, so follow that link. Book your
- 8:01Speaker 2: tickets day and you know what, guys, if you can't
- 8:03Speaker 2: come to Ohio, that's a shame because Ohio is magical.
- 8:06Speaker 2: Despite what people say on the internet.
- 8:08Speaker 1: They have crack raccoons.
- 8:12Speaker 2: That's true, that's true. But there's a lot of great
- 8:14Speaker 2: stuff about Ohio.
- 8:15Speaker 1: And I ask one favor. Sure, can you guarantee me
- 8:20Speaker 1: and put it in writing that a car will not
- 8:23Speaker 1: drive into the building while we're doing our live shot.
- 8:27Speaker 2: I can't promise that, but we are the county above
- 8:30Speaker 2: the county I live in, So okay, maybe they have
- 8:33Speaker 2: a better track record than the one I live in.
- 8:36Speaker 2: But if you can't make it to Ohio, that's okay.
- 8:38Speaker 2: Become a member of our YouTube channel, right, So you
- 8:41Speaker 2: become a member. There's a tier there as well. You
- 8:44Speaker 2: get to use fun emojis and the chat. You'll get
- 8:47Speaker 2: a special commands here soon. You get it access to
- 8:52Speaker 2: our members only, which next week we're starting weekly on Wednesdays.
- 8:57Speaker 2: Super excited about that. And we're gonna be dreaming all
- 9:00Speaker 2: of our live in person events exclusively just for our members.
- 9:04Speaker 2: So it's okay. If you can't come to Ohio, I
- 9:06Speaker 2: can remember instead.
- 9:08Speaker 1: Now I think we might need to change our members
- 9:10Speaker 1: only to TMI because we give way too much information
- 9:14Speaker 1: about ourselves.
- 9:16Speaker 2: That's true, that's true. It's only going to get better.
- 9:19Speaker 2: It's it's it's only going to get better, guys.
- 9:22Speaker 1: It well, guys, tonight, I wasn't going to drink. I
- 9:26Speaker 1: was going to stick to sparkling water. But I couldn't
- 9:30Speaker 1: toast you, Lama with sparkling water that I had to
- 9:34Speaker 1: go ahead and mix some mine with some paint pills.
- 9:38Speaker 1: So We'll see how tonight goes.
- 9:40Speaker 2: But I love this for our first official show together.
- 9:44Speaker 1: So I am drinking a nineteen ninety nine Domain Carness
- 9:48Speaker 1: Brute Rose, and the tasting notes say on the nose,
- 9:52Speaker 1: the nineteen ninety nine rose welcomes the senses with the
- 9:56Speaker 1: aromas of wild raspberries and strawberries, fresh cut watermelon, peaches,
- 10:03Speaker 1: and a subtle oral hint of orange blossom and rose petal.
- 10:07Speaker 2: This sounds delicious.
- 10:09Speaker 1: The sophisticated and dry palette displays supple layered flares of nectarine, raspberry,
- 10:15Speaker 1: and ginger, and it says it was augmented by exceptional
- 10:19Speaker 1: weather conditions during the nineteen ninety nine growing season in harvest,
- 10:24Speaker 1: and says this wine showcases energy, depth and complexity, just
- 10:29Speaker 1: like Terry.
- 10:31Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean yeah, I love that.
- 10:38Speaker 1: What are you drinking?
- 10:39Speaker 2: Oh? What am I drinking? Oh? I went grocery shopping
- 10:44Speaker 2: Sunday and I took I took pictures of all the
- 10:47Speaker 2: bottles of wine. So that way for the future episodes,
- 10:50Speaker 2: I could like pair my wine with the show and
- 10:53Speaker 2: I could be like elbow be you know, get this
- 10:56Speaker 2: one that I have the picture of this one right here,
- 10:58Speaker 2: because he needs.
- 10:59Speaker 1: Now we should probably tell people who elbow Feet is
- 11:03Speaker 1: in case they don't watch couch court or not on
- 11:06Speaker 1: the court, They're probably going, who is this elbow feet person?
- 11:11Speaker 2: Elbow Feet is my paramore. We've been together for thirteen years.
- 11:15Speaker 2: He's very active in chats as much as he can,
- 11:19Speaker 2: being super supportive. He is fabulous and very funny, and
- 11:23Speaker 2: if you come in owhile, you'll get a meet him too.
- 11:25Speaker 2: I'm almost wondering if he's becoming more popular than I am.
- 11:28Speaker 2: I think he might be. He is more intereresting.
- 11:30Speaker 1: I'm thinking we would to find a karaoke place I
- 11:34Speaker 1: love for us.
- 11:36Speaker 2: He will just sing for it. Listen at the Airbnb.
- 11:39Speaker 2: I will just sing that. He'll sing whatever you he
- 11:41Speaker 2: was singing together. Anyway, I digress. So I was at
- 11:45Speaker 2: the grocery store. Who is elbow feet? He's wonderful anyway,
- 11:51Speaker 2: So this didn't pair it with the case we have
- 11:55Speaker 2: today because I saw the label and I was like, ooh,
- 11:58Speaker 2: I like that one first. Okay, so I'm drinking sheep Thrills.
- 12:04Speaker 2: I don't Oh, you probably can't see it because my
- 12:06Speaker 2: brain is drinking. It's called sheep Thrills and there's pictures
- 12:09Speaker 2: of sheep with parachutes attached to them. And I love
- 12:13Speaker 2: a good pun more than anything do. I love puns.
- 12:16Speaker 2: And so it's a Pino grazio from Italy. Oh fancy,
- 12:22Speaker 2: And the back of the bottle it says for centuries
- 12:26Speaker 2: ventures in the pasture lands of Italy have protected their
- 12:30Speaker 2: grapes from wandering sheep who loved the snack on them.
- 12:34Speaker 2: I love snacks too, I do do. Lucky for us,
- 12:37Speaker 2: the ventors prevailed, and today we can enjoy sheep thrills.
- 12:42Speaker 2: Pino Grazio a delightful, medium bodied white wine with delicate
- 12:47Speaker 2: floral aromas, fresh fruit flavors and a crisp, elegant finish.
- 12:53Speaker 2: Delicious on its own or paired with grim shrimp. It
- 12:57Speaker 2: was made for me. Everybody knows how much I love shrimp.
- 13:00Speaker 1: That is you sushi, no.
- 13:03Speaker 2: Thank you, Salad's okay, and like vegetarian fair. Oh look,
- 13:07Speaker 2: it's for everybody and jolly chilled. And so that's what
- 13:11Speaker 2: I got today. It was very dramatic. I'm sorry, no,
- 13:14Speaker 2: a little dramatic.
- 13:15Speaker 1: I that's why I mean. We've got dramatic an extra.
- 13:20Speaker 1: Is this not going to be great? Guys?
- 13:22Speaker 2: I think so. I.
- 13:26Speaker 1: Yeah, I love that, and I'm going to need you
- 13:29Speaker 1: to send me a picture of the label so I
- 13:32Speaker 1: can go and check it out.
- 13:35Speaker 2: Well, dude, it's quite delicious. I just poured me a
- 13:37Speaker 2: glass of it. It's a little dry, but I love it.
- 13:40Speaker 2: There's my mom My.
- 13:41Speaker 1: Mom's calling me.
- 13:43Speaker 2: I'm a was calling me back because I saw I
- 13:45Speaker 2: missed a call from her, and so I tried to
- 13:46Speaker 2: call her before I went on. She didn't answer, and
- 13:48Speaker 2: I was like, I know she's gonna call me back
- 13:50Speaker 2: as soon as like a lie, and she did and
- 13:53Speaker 2: I was like, hey, I'm live.
- 13:55Speaker 1: I have to tell you I am so excited to
- 13:58Speaker 1: meet Mama Lama and all Blue Beaten person. Plus our
- 14:02Speaker 1: AP is going to be in Ohio. MS. Right is.
- 14:10Speaker 2: Now?
- 14:11Speaker 1: Do have another announcement? But I may wait to give it,
- 14:16Speaker 1: okay or maybe not.
- 14:20Speaker 2: You know what, Let's save it for the end. Keep
- 14:21Speaker 2: people in suspense for the show.
- 14:24Speaker 1: Want to know something very exciting. You have to stick.
- 14:27Speaker 2: Around, yes, stick around for the end for whatever secrets
- 14:31Speaker 2: Terry has. I don't know.
- 14:34Speaker 1: Let's get into.
- 14:36Speaker 2: All, right, guys. This episode is called Wine, Wealth and Murder,
- 14:43Speaker 2: The Robert Dall Horror and Buckle up, you guys, because
- 14:47Speaker 2: it's going to be a bumpy ride. Okay. So I
- 14:51Speaker 2: want to start off this story with a quote from
- 14:55Speaker 2: tech entrepreneur and wine writer Lou Pradue. Yes is his name,
- 15:01Speaker 2: and I am obsessed with saying it. Lou Purdue. Lou Purdue.
- 15:06Speaker 2: I was singing when I was writing this, by the way,
- 15:08Speaker 2: but what he said in an interview about this case
- 15:12Speaker 2: really highlights what we're going to be talking about tonight.
- 15:15Speaker 2: And it goes like this quote, the money makes people crazy.
- 15:20Speaker 2: Money is intoxicating, and when you nix money and wine,
- 15:26Speaker 2: I think you get intoxicated to the second or third
- 15:29Speaker 2: power end quote. And tonight we're going to talk about
- 15:34Speaker 2: what happens when that intoxication, that greed, and the house
- 15:40Speaker 2: of cars that was built on top of it comes
- 15:43Speaker 2: tumbling down and leads to murder. It's going to be
- 15:48Speaker 2: something you guys. I don't know if you're ready.
- 15:50Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't know if you're ready. Because Napa is
- 15:54Speaker 1: the second happiest place on Earth. You've got Disney World
- 16:00Speaker 1: and you've got Napa. So oh, Napa Valley. I mean,
- 16:04Speaker 1: come on, It's the land of vineyards, soft jazz, and
- 16:08Speaker 1: people who think a shartooty board is a personality trait
- 16:12Speaker 1: that would be me. And I didn't say shark Cucci board.
- 16:16Speaker 1: I said charchoutary board.
- 16:19Speaker 2: Okay, okay, now Sureucci.
- 16:23Speaker 1: Have you not seen that scocie?
- 16:25Speaker 2: No, I haven't you.
- 16:27Speaker 1: So if my bestie pops in the chat, Cheryl, she
- 16:30Speaker 1: gave me a shark cuterie board, but it says I
- 16:33Speaker 1: can't say this, So it's shark Cucci and it's got
- 16:36Speaker 1: a picture of a shark.
- 16:38Speaker 2: I love it.
- 16:39Speaker 1: Where you get to Ohio, So Napa Valley is a
- 16:43Speaker 1: region where the wine is dry, but the scandals guys
- 16:47Speaker 1: are very, very juicy. And walking straight into that fermented
- 16:52Speaker 1: fantasy was a man named Robert Dahl named double H.
- 16:57Speaker 1: Now double H was just a one full husband. I
- 17:01Speaker 1: actually have a fine What is this? It is actually
- 17:07Speaker 1: from a vineyard. It is a vine that the grapes
- 17:11Speaker 1: stormly grow on.
- 17:13Speaker 2: That is very cool. I didn't know there was going
- 17:15Speaker 2: to be props, so I.
- 17:18Speaker 1: Am no, it's going to go in my new podcast studio.
- 17:24Speaker 1: It's going to be on the wall. I love that.
- 17:28Speaker 1: There's mister Robert Dahl. Now guys don't like him, just
- 17:33Speaker 1: gonna say, don't like him.
- 17:34Speaker 2: Okay, it kind of looks like my best friend's ex.
- 17:37Speaker 2: I'm going to tell her all about it later.
- 17:43Speaker 1: Now, Robert Dahl was a man who radiated charm, ambition,
- 17:48Speaker 1: and just enough confidence to make people believe him, at
- 17:53Speaker 1: least at first. So it's kind of like a car
- 17:55Speaker 1: salesman right now, it was a Minnesota transplant with a
- 17:59Speaker 1: checker pasted and guys. He reinvented himself in Napa Valley
- 18:04Speaker 1: as a bold entrepreneur, launching wine in beer ventures with
- 18:11Speaker 1: flash flare and some questionable financial foundations. He was a
- 18:18Speaker 1: smooth talker with a taste for the spotlight. But behind
- 18:23Speaker 1: the glossy labels in vineyard views was a pattern of
- 18:27Speaker 1: broken promises, failed businesses, and a trail of betrayed investors.
- 18:34Speaker 1: To some, he was a visionaries, to others, he was
- 18:37Speaker 1: a con man. To me, he was a narcissist ass hat. Okay,
- 18:44Speaker 1: But in the end, Robert Doll's carefully crafted image collapsed
- 18:49Speaker 1: under the weight of his own deception. Guys, he didn't
- 18:53Speaker 1: leave behind a legacy, but he left behind a cautionary
- 18:57Speaker 1: tale and also traumatized thousands of grapes. Okay, thousands of.
- 19:06Speaker 2: Grapes the grapes, Robert Grace, I mean, stressed grapes don't
- 19:14Speaker 2: make good wine.
- 19:15Speaker 1: It doesn't. Stressed grapes doesn't. No, they need to be Yeah,
- 19:21Speaker 1: But Robert wasn't always swirling pinot and talking about terrier. Nope.
- 19:28Speaker 1: In twenty two, Robert Devall was living the American dream
- 19:32Speaker 1: in Minnesolta. How to do with that? Minnesota?
- 19:37Speaker 2: Minnesota?
- 19:41Speaker 1: Sorry man. So he was in his early forties. He
- 19:46Speaker 1: had a beautiful wife and three children. So he was
- 19:50Speaker 1: an entrepreneur and in his view as a successful businessman
- 19:55Speaker 1: who had just sold his company, Dura Band International. Guys.
- 20:00Speaker 1: They made anti microbio cleaners to fight mold in construction products,
- 20:06Speaker 1: and according to him, his company was purchased for twelve
- 20:11Speaker 1: million dollars. Twelve million dollars.
- 20:15Speaker 2: Okay, ad buys any of my ideas for millions of dollars?
- 20:19Speaker 1: I have so many ideas. But he said he received
- 20:24Speaker 1: only five hundred thousand after the buyer filed for bankruptcy.
- 20:30Speaker 2: Well that's a significant difference. But okay.
- 20:33Speaker 1: Well, also the product didn't work.
- 20:37Speaker 2: Spoiled little there, spoilers.
- 20:44Speaker 1: Hi ju ju. Being from Kentucky, you're about to find
- 20:47Speaker 1: out what Robert did.
- 20:49Speaker 2: He traumatized, not good.
- 20:51Speaker 1: A lot of grapes, A lot of grapes, and he
- 20:54Speaker 1: killed people. But this did not stop Robert from pursuing
- 21:00Speaker 1: his next entrepreneur dream. He took that money, uprooted his family,
- 21:05Speaker 1: and moved to California, where he was determined to own
- 21:09Speaker 1: his own vineyard in the exclusive Napa Valley. But guys,
- 21:14Speaker 1: I have to be honest, I don't know about you.
- 21:18Speaker 1: How in the hell do you transition from mold products
- 21:22Speaker 1: to making murlow? Okay? So I'm going to just say
- 21:27Speaker 1: I'm going to need a little more than a LinkedIn
- 21:30Speaker 1: update on his profile to feel secure before I believe him.
- 21:35Speaker 2: That's fair. Well, I mean, if we've learned anything from
- 21:38Speaker 2: the Karen Reid trial is that you can put anything
- 21:40Speaker 2: you want on your LinkedIn and the company Aperture won't
- 21:44Speaker 2: check and we'll hire you. Oh boy, Sorry, there's probably
- 21:50Speaker 2: gonna be some Karen ree references in here. Do you
- 21:51Speaker 2: have a watch to check out my show Couch Groblama
- 21:55Speaker 2: Live every day for that anyway, But back to this story,
- 21:58Speaker 2: while we're here to tonight. That is gorgeous. I've never
- 22:04Speaker 2: been to California, and gorgeous anyway.
- 22:06Speaker 1: So we need to do live shows.
- 22:07Speaker 2: There, I agreed. So the Napa Valley has a certain
- 22:11Speaker 2: allure that attracts all sorts of dreamers, from Silicon Valley
- 22:16Speaker 2: tycoons to Wall Street brows, to rock stars and movie stars.
- 22:21Speaker 2: Everyone wants their hands on a piece of that beautiful pie.
- 22:25Speaker 2: I mean, who does it? That's amazing and beautiful. However,
- 22:29Speaker 2: one simply does not just come into town and try
- 22:32Speaker 2: to start a wine business. Oh no, no, no, It's
- 22:35Speaker 2: very tough to break into the scene unless you're coming
- 22:38Speaker 2: in with a buttload, buttload of cash. But the cash
- 22:43Speaker 2: will only take you so far because you must also
- 22:46Speaker 2: be extremely, extremely trustworthy, as doing business in wine country
- 22:51Speaker 2: is often very very personal. It is exclusive good luck.
- 22:57Speaker 2: But you know what, that didn't deter Robert. No, no, no.
- 23:01Speaker 2: He showed up in Napa with his wife, his kids,
- 23:03Speaker 2: and just enough swagger to con a region still with
- 23:08Speaker 2: Themoier's and startups. Okay, he bought a one point four
- 23:13Speaker 2: million dollar home. He was ambitious, charismatic, and many called
- 23:19Speaker 2: him a fantastic salesman. Look at that house.
- 23:22Speaker 1: I have to stop you. That is not a one
- 23:25Speaker 1: point four million dollar home, and Napa unless he financed
- 23:32Speaker 1: only the interest, so I had to give that a
- 23:37Speaker 1: googy guys, that beans Google Because California is so expensive.
- 23:43Speaker 1: I did a screen thing with just this picture. I
- 23:46Speaker 1: think it's called Google lens. It said this house would
- 23:49Speaker 1: be worth sixteen million unless you financed only the interest.
- 23:56Speaker 2: Interesting.
- 23:59Speaker 1: I found that interest because I didn't know you could
- 24:01Speaker 1: do a mortgage just for interest.
- 24:03Speaker 2: I didn't either. Okay, that doesn't sound like a good idea.
- 24:05Speaker 1: Because I was like, I would move to Napa again.
- 24:09Speaker 1: I've moved back to California. If I could actually get
- 24:11Speaker 1: that for a million.
- 24:13Speaker 2: That's crazy. Thank you for sharing that with us, dry,
- 24:17Speaker 2: I'm that's nice. So Robert was so good that over
- 24:23Speaker 2: the next five years that he was in California, he
- 24:26Speaker 2: was able to convince friends and even some celebrities. Yeah,
- 24:31Speaker 2: that's right to invest millions of dollars into numerous wine
- 24:35Speaker 2: and beer ventures. So after moving to the Napa Billy Valley,
- 24:41Speaker 2: sorry Valley, Robert's first adventure was launching a company called
- 24:46Speaker 2: California sh Shiners with Bill Luckett. When I see shiners,
- 24:51Speaker 2: I think of shiners. Sorry, we have them here. I
- 24:53Speaker 2: don't know if everybody has.
- 24:55Speaker 1: I think a shiner bock, which is a beer in Texas.
- 24:58Speaker 2: Oh okay, Well, so he would buy and sell grapes
- 25:02Speaker 2: and bottle no name wine, making what they call shiners.
- 25:07Speaker 2: He would then sell those bottles to customers who added
- 25:09Speaker 2: their own labels to them. This was all considered like
- 25:13Speaker 2: the lower end of the wine business.
- 25:18Speaker 1: I'm going to stop you right there and just say
- 25:21Speaker 1: it is considered the lower end because you don't get
- 25:25Speaker 1: to mix and make it your own flavor. But I
- 25:31Speaker 1: can't wait till the day that True Crime and wind
- 25:33Speaker 1: Time gets big enough that we can sell wine with
- 25:38Speaker 1: our own label. Oh my gosh, I mean the Wine
- 25:42Speaker 1: and Crime girls do it, but they actually blended their
- 25:45Speaker 1: own where this is already blended. You just get to
- 25:48Speaker 1: slap a label on it. So like if you're getting married,
- 25:51Speaker 1: you could order five cases and they would put a
- 25:54Speaker 1: label on for your wedding.
- 25:55Speaker 2: Oh okay, I understand this.
- 25:57Speaker 1: So it is the lower tiered because you're not putting
- 26:01Speaker 1: the name brand on it. But it's not bad wine.
- 26:04Speaker 2: Okay. The more justify and once she's the Queen of wine,
- 26:09Speaker 2: so she has obviously a lot of insight into and says,
- 26:13Speaker 2: I mean out as a compliment so by twenty eleven, though,
- 26:18Speaker 2: Robert was ready to take his next big steps towards
- 26:21Speaker 2: making his wine business dreams come true. Then his path
- 26:26Speaker 2: crossed with someone at one time considered the quote Prince
- 26:31Speaker 2: of the Wine Country Dominic Foppily. If you guys, so
- 26:38Speaker 2: our lovely staff member Capin does the slide shows and
- 26:41Speaker 2: I wish you guys knew what she labeled each of
- 26:43Speaker 2: the pictures of, because they're so good with nice spoilers. Well, okay,
- 26:46Speaker 2: she labeled this one for poly bachelor look and ass.
- 26:52Speaker 1: Well, now I will tell you he was known to
- 26:58Speaker 1: They're not joking when they said Prince of Wine Country.
- 27:01Speaker 1: He was considered to be an eligible bachelor.
- 27:05Speaker 2: Wow. Interesting, Okay, Well anyway, now, Dominic was fairly young
- 27:14Speaker 2: and didn't have his own personal vineyard yet, but he
- 27:17Speaker 2: had met some people from Asia who were getting into
- 27:20Speaker 2: importing some California wine. Because he didn't have his own facility,
- 27:25Speaker 2: he couldn't package the wine fast enough to fulfill the orders.
- 27:29Speaker 2: And what must have been seen as a sign is
- 27:32Speaker 2: when he met Robert Dahl quote and so I met Robert.
- 27:38Speaker 2: He was very new to this, but he was willing
- 27:41Speaker 2: to work really, really hard and he had genuine genuineness
- 27:46Speaker 2: that he could project that made you want to trust him,
- 27:50Speaker 2: made you want to like him. End quote. Over the
- 27:54Speaker 2: next year or so, Dominic and Robert would often go
- 27:57Speaker 2: out to dinner and hang out and soon became very
- 27:59Speaker 2: close friends. Dominic said, as a friend, he was always there.
- 28:04Speaker 2: I could text him at eleven o'clock at night and
- 28:06Speaker 2: he'd get he'd get back to me.
- 28:09Speaker 1: Do you think they had friendship bracelets?
- 28:12Speaker 2: That? If not, everybody should have friendship bracelets. That's a
- 28:16Speaker 2: Karen Read joke. Oh my gosh, everybody there running gets
- 28:19Speaker 2: upset if he doesn't have a friendship bracelet. Anyway, Then
- 28:24Speaker 2: one day Robert made him a business proposition, one if
- 28:28Speaker 2: together they buy their own vineyard. So after going to
- 28:33Speaker 2: look at some property together, Dominic agreed with him. He
- 28:37Speaker 2: staked everything he had on this new partnership, even his
- 28:41Speaker 2: own house. Quote. So I say, this is something I'm
- 28:45Speaker 2: going to do and I have to go all in,
- 28:48Speaker 2: and I need you to be all in too, and
- 28:51Speaker 2: he Robert said, I got you, and you guys. Dominic
- 28:56Speaker 2: had no reason to doubt that Robert was doing tremendous
- 29:00Speaker 2: well or that there would be any problems he thought
- 29:03Speaker 2: this was gonna be a solid deal. Well, not long
- 29:09Speaker 2: after they closed on the vineyard deal. Yes, thank you,
- 29:11Speaker 2: Juju mabe. We'll get there. We'll get there, girl. Robert
- 29:15Speaker 2: was already looking for bigger and better opportunities. It seemed
- 29:20Speaker 2: that sharing ownership of a vineyard wasn't good enough. No, no,
- 29:25Speaker 2: no no. He wanted to be the boss. And in
- 29:28Speaker 2: order to do that, Robert needed new partners. And then
- 29:32Speaker 2: he found the investor he was looking for, one who
- 29:36Speaker 2: came with a gym bag full of cash.
- 29:41Speaker 1: Now, guys, I wish someone would give me a double
- 29:45Speaker 1: bag of money so that I could buy a vineyard
- 29:50Speaker 1: because I don't have enough. Yeah, I need that, Juju bean.
- 29:58Speaker 1: It is like serious wealth. Yeah, that's what I can afford.
- 30:03Speaker 1: One hundred and fifty square foot shack.
- 30:07Speaker 2: There, I believe it.
- 30:14Speaker 1: Now, next we're going to get into a mod tall
- 30:19Speaker 1: phills background. But before I do that, just you know,
- 30:23Speaker 1: with a Dominic, things did not go well. Dominic found
- 30:27Speaker 1: out he was conning him, and his family stepped in
- 30:32Speaker 1: and helped him with the money to buy Robert out.
- 30:35Speaker 1: He got rid of Robert.
- 30:36Speaker 2: It's spoilers, I know.
- 30:40Speaker 1: I just had to tell you that because Okay, Christopher Creek,
- 30:45Speaker 1: if there's any wine people on here, I just wanted
- 30:47Speaker 1: to throw that out quick for you guys. Okay, I
- 30:50Speaker 1: just need to tell you all that now, Imod tough. Phyllis.
- 30:55Speaker 1: So if Robert was chaos and Mod was calm, he
- 31:00Speaker 1: was the type who paid attention, did his homework, and
- 31:05Speaker 1: still someone who believed in people. Okay. His brother called
- 31:10Speaker 1: him an angel on Earth, and neighbors adored him. He
- 31:15Speaker 1: ran marathons, and he had a labrador named Maddie who
- 31:20Speaker 1: went everywhere with him.
- 31:22Speaker 2: Who love that. From everything I've read about him, he
- 31:25Speaker 2: seems like the nicest guy.
- 31:28Speaker 1: Do you see where he's at the film festival at
- 31:33Speaker 1: I love that?
- 31:35Speaker 2: So.
- 31:36Speaker 1: Maud was originally from la but he lived in Los Gatos, California.
- 31:41Speaker 1: He was a seasoned finance and accounting professional in Silicon Valley.
- 31:46Speaker 1: He was recognized for his financial expertise in the Bay
- 31:50Speaker 1: Area as well. He served as a controller at Brook Trout,
- 31:55Speaker 1: which is an office technology firm. But guys, he grew
- 32:00Speaker 1: heart of corporate life and decided he wanted to invest
- 32:03Speaker 1: his time and money into his two passions. And let
- 32:06Speaker 1: me tell you, his passions were expensive. Film and wine.
- 32:12Speaker 1: I mean, can't get yeah more than that. Now. His
- 32:17Speaker 1: first investment venture was back was to back an indie
- 32:21Speaker 1: comedy film, Jimmy Vestfood American Heed role Boy. How did
- 32:28Speaker 1: I do that?
- 32:29Speaker 2: That's good? Okay?
- 32:31Speaker 1: Oh, look, that is just hilarious. So it is a
- 32:36Speaker 1: movie described as using raunchy humor to jab at American
- 32:41Speaker 1: prejudices towards the Middle East in the style of Borat
- 32:47Speaker 1: And guess what, guys, he had a cameo.
- 32:50Speaker 2: That sounds amazing. I definitely want to watch that. I mean,
- 32:53Speaker 2: it certainly sounds interesting. But it's no Lam Again, which
- 32:57Speaker 2: is a real movie. By the way, m m it
- 33:01Speaker 2: is it. Don't watch it so bad?
- 33:04Speaker 1: Okay. Now, not only did he invest two hundred thousand,
- 33:09Speaker 1: but he was also credited as a wedding guest in
- 33:12Speaker 1: the film Okay. When director and screenwriter Jonathan Kesselman was
- 33:18Speaker 1: asked what kind of actor a mod was, he laughed
- 33:22Speaker 1: and he said it was a better humanitarian than an actor.
- 33:29Speaker 1: Same thing they would say about me, I hope. But
- 33:33Speaker 1: during the movie shoot and Moud and Jonathan spent more
- 33:37Speaker 1: time together and they became very friendly. He even invited
- 33:41Speaker 1: the new film director and his wife to the very
- 33:44Speaker 1: fancy home he owned near Napa Valley. He was a
- 33:48Speaker 1: kind and welcoming host, and he let them stay in
- 33:52Speaker 1: his own bedroom, wow, instead of the guest room. That
- 33:58Speaker 1: is a great guest. That's a great guest. Now, he
- 34:04Speaker 1: was a very liked person in the tech world. And
- 34:09Speaker 1: here's what he's what Jonathan said, he was like a
- 34:14Speaker 1: business person in tech, and I think he was excited
- 34:18Speaker 1: to not be a corporate guy anymore. He had made
- 34:21Speaker 1: a lot of money and he was tired of it
- 34:24Speaker 1: and sort of wanted to explore other things in his life,
- 34:28Speaker 1: things that he had a passion for. Don't we all
- 34:33Speaker 1: want to get there?
- 34:34Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 34:36Speaker 1: Yeah. Now. In twenty eleven, Imad met Robert Dahl, and
- 34:40Speaker 1: the two quickly shared their aspirations of making it big
- 34:44Speaker 1: and the wine business. In twenty twelve, Robert pitched him
- 34:49Speaker 1: the idea for the Patio Wine Company, an off label
- 34:53Speaker 1: wine business. Now am I initially invested a few hundred
- 34:57Speaker 1: thousand dollars now twenty thirteen, Robert told him he could
- 35:03Speaker 1: get a better deal on bolk grapes with cash, so
- 35:07Speaker 1: guys like he would be like buying bootleg Bordeaux at
- 35:11Speaker 1: a back Alley Farmer's Market.
- 35:15Speaker 2: Okay.
- 35:16Speaker 1: Now that is when Ima decided to make the big
- 35:20Speaker 1: jump with both feet and get into business with Robert Doll.
- 35:25Speaker 1: Now he is the one who showed up with a
- 35:27Speaker 1: big red Adidas Duffel bag filled with eight hundred thousand
- 35:33Speaker 1: dollars in cash and handed it to Robert. Now, I know,
- 35:40Speaker 1: look at that, now, didn't he did? He walk around
- 35:45Speaker 1: with a duffel bag full of cash too? Uh?
- 35:48Speaker 2: A fanny pack?
- 35:51Speaker 1: There's the bestie.
- 35:54Speaker 2: He used a fanny pack full of cash and drugs.
- 35:57Speaker 1: Okay. Now, Robert took several pictures of the Duffel bag
- 36:01Speaker 1: and money, and he would show it and tell everyone
- 36:06Speaker 1: that he met about it.
- 36:08Speaker 2: I mean, I'm not going to judge him too hard
- 36:10Speaker 2: because I would probably spread it all over my bed
- 36:13Speaker 2: and roll in it and take all the shots of
- 36:17Speaker 2: that much. I mean, who would it. Let's be honest,
- 36:19Speaker 2: Don't I think you're better better than us? You're not, okay,
- 36:24Speaker 2: because that is a ridiculous amount of doll hairs. And
- 36:28Speaker 2: that one's for you, Soony Sunshine?
- 36:30Speaker 1: Is that for seeing?
- 36:32Speaker 2: That is?
- 36:33Speaker 1: That is?
- 36:33Speaker 2: They worked her doll hairs into that?
- 36:36Speaker 1: But yeah, wasn't there a movie with Demi Moore and
- 36:41Speaker 1: our buffies not here where there was money all over
- 36:44Speaker 1: the bed and she rolled in it or something wasn't.
- 36:48Speaker 2: Was that in her? Uh? Was that the strip stripper
- 36:52Speaker 2: one that?
- 36:53Speaker 1: Or it was the one where they the guy offered
- 36:56Speaker 1: her money for one night and she was married or
- 36:59Speaker 1: with some guys. I'm drinking and I've had pay mets.
- 37:04Speaker 1: I could be totally wrong, So I'm just going to
- 37:06Speaker 1: move on.
- 37:07Speaker 2: We'll just keep going.
- 37:08Speaker 1: Yeah, Now in Maud's investment was over one point two
- 37:13Speaker 1: million dollars and it would now help launch doll Vineyards.
- 37:19Speaker 1: Now things seem to be going very well and very fast, Okay,
- 37:25Speaker 1: so much that it seemed Robert had a bit of
- 37:27Speaker 1: the Midas touch, and he was able to pay back
- 37:30Speaker 1: some of in Mad's initial initial investment, and Mod finally
- 37:36Speaker 1: got to make his wine business dream come true. And Robert,
- 37:40Speaker 1: backed with all of in Mod's cash, was on his
- 37:43Speaker 1: way to being the big man in Napa. I mean,
- 37:49Speaker 1: it is a nice classic the proposal, thank you bells
- 37:57Speaker 1: in decent proposal. Hey, at least I'm not totally crazy.
- 38:03Speaker 1: So in return for his investment, am I got ninety
- 38:07Speaker 1: seven point five percent of the company stock and the assets. Now,
- 38:13Speaker 1: the agreement was clean, but the business was not. And
- 38:19Speaker 1: I'm gonna just say, someone's offering you ninety seven point
- 38:22Speaker 1: five percent of the business.
- 38:26Speaker 2: That's wild.
- 38:27Speaker 1: That's not gonna happen.
- 38:29Speaker 2: That is wild. That is wild. So you guys, at
- 38:33Speaker 2: this point in twenty thirteen, Robert was still a co
- 38:36Speaker 2: owner of the Christopher Creek Winery with Dominicppy Olye, and Robert.
- 38:42Speaker 2: Robert and Emid were now running Doll Winery Well.
- 38:46Speaker 1: Then.
- 38:46Speaker 2: Robert then was introduced to construction developer Greg Nddle and
- 38:51Speaker 2: his wife Francine, who was an artist. Robert persuaded Greg
- 38:57Speaker 2: to invest in a new brew pub called Napa Point Brewery.
- 39:02Speaker 2: Like this guy doesn't have enough going on, But here
- 39:05Speaker 2: we are. Look at that. There's Robert and Greg and
- 39:07Speaker 2: the lovely, very nice brewery. In an interview, Greg Middle
- 39:13Speaker 2: said that Robert was very charismatic. He could dazzle a
- 39:18Speaker 2: room like no one I had ever seen. I mean, even,
- 39:22Speaker 2: excuse me, pardon me, I've been on all day, you guys.
- 39:24Speaker 2: My voice is a little rusty today, I apologize. Even
- 39:28Speaker 2: Greg's wife Francine, said he exuded confidence. Oh my gosh,
- 39:33Speaker 2: did he exude confidence, like I'm telling you, like nobody
- 39:37Speaker 2: I've ever met before in my life, which seems to
- 39:42Speaker 2: be what everyone is saying about him. Both saw Robert
- 39:45Speaker 2: as an outgoing, charming, hard working guy, and there was
- 39:49Speaker 2: no hesitation from the couple to go into business with Robert.
- 39:53Speaker 2: Greg was a good business partner to have, as it
- 39:56Speaker 2: was his construction company that built the brewery, and just
- 40:00Speaker 2: a few months later, in October twenty thirteen, the Napa
- 40:03Speaker 2: Point Growing Pub opened its doors. I mean, why wouldn't they?
- 40:08Speaker 2: You know, everybody's in business with this guy. You don't
- 40:11Speaker 2: want to mess out.
- 40:12Speaker 1: It makes sense, right, And a lot of the husbands
- 40:16Speaker 1: don't drink wine, and a group pub is exactly where
- 40:21Speaker 1: they want to go. So, I mean, it's a good
- 40:25Speaker 1: business plan.
- 40:26Speaker 2: It's a good idea, but we'll see how it goes.
- 40:30Speaker 2: When Greg was asked about Robert what Robert promised him
- 40:33Speaker 2: and his wife, he said, well that we were going
- 40:36Speaker 2: to have a reputable business that we would hand off
- 40:40Speaker 2: to our kids. That sounds like a great thing to do, right.
- 40:45Speaker 2: Greg and Francine became very close friends with Robert and
- 40:48Speaker 2: his wife. Jew Francine reminisced about a motorcycle ride she
- 40:52Speaker 2: had taken with Robert. Okay, one time, I don't know
- 40:56Speaker 2: how I ended up on the back of Robert's motorcycle
- 40:58Speaker 2: and he pointed out this mansion that's right off the
- 41:01Speaker 2: Silverado trail. And he looked back at me and he said,
- 41:06Speaker 2: you know what, Greg and I are going to make
- 41:09Speaker 2: so much money that he's going to be able to
- 41:12Speaker 2: buy a house like this for you someday. What a
- 41:16Speaker 2: smooth talker. Right, that's the house. Oh my gosh, that's
- 41:20Speaker 2: like my dream house. Think about the reading nooks.
- 41:24Speaker 1: Yes, the reading nooks.
- 41:27Speaker 2: I'm an old.
- 41:28Speaker 1: If we would just cut the very top fire off
- 41:33Speaker 1: unless you can actually go up there, and it's a lookout,
- 41:37Speaker 1: but a lot of times you don't have stairs to
- 41:39Speaker 1: go up there. As long as you have stairs and
- 41:41Speaker 1: can go up there, it's perfect.
- 41:44Speaker 2: Well, I would build stairs if I had money for
- 41:46Speaker 2: the house. I'm building stairs. I have a stair money, Terry, Okay,
- 41:51Speaker 2: let's go.
- 41:53Speaker 1: Because you would need to have a nook so you
- 41:55Speaker 1: could just sit and cuddle up and read.
- 41:57Speaker 2: Yes, everywhere all over the house anyway, the out of
- 42:01Speaker 2: Lama's fantasy world here. So for the first three to
- 42:04Speaker 2: four months, the brewery was booming. They had an amazing
- 42:07Speaker 2: brew master in that mansion that Robert showed Frans scene.
- 42:11Speaker 2: It seemed closer to reality than ever. The couple had
- 42:15Speaker 2: noticed that Robert had an expensive lifestyle and that he
- 42:19Speaker 2: never seemed quite satisfied with what he had. That's why
- 42:23Speaker 2: I played the Hamilton song. And your guys have said,
- 42:25Speaker 2: I know a song of you are thinking it. I'm
- 42:27Speaker 2: not going to sing it because I don't sing. But
- 42:31Speaker 2: they quoted They quoted the couple as saying he liked
- 42:34Speaker 2: to live. Well, you know, he couldn't live in a
- 42:37Speaker 2: three thousand square foot house. No, it had to be
- 42:40Speaker 2: a five thousand square foot house. He didn't have to
- 42:43Speaker 2: have one brand new motorcycle. He had to have two
- 42:47Speaker 2: brand new motorcycles. Whoever complains about living in a three
- 42:51Speaker 2: thousand square foot home is wild.
- 42:56Speaker 1: I mean a la other than that, three thousand square
- 43:01Speaker 1: feet should be plenty in my opinion.
- 43:06Speaker 2: I guess all right, So that's where Greg and Brancine are.
- 43:11Speaker 1: Well. Now, like you said, Robert has at least three
- 43:14Speaker 1: different businesses going and at some point, oh, the bubbles
- 43:20Speaker 1: are making me burpy. Sorry. His first business partner, Dominic
- 43:25Speaker 1: Fapelli was starting to have some serious questions. You see,
- 43:30Speaker 1: Dominic was actually the one running the Christopher Creek Winery
- 43:34Speaker 1: this whole time, while Robert was running the books. Oh
- 43:42Speaker 1: I know, Dominic got a phone call from their lender
- 43:47Speaker 1: telling him that they were going to start the four
- 43:50Speaker 1: closure proceedings on them because they apparently had missed their
- 43:56Speaker 1: first payment for the winery. Guys, Dominic put up his hat.
- 44:03Speaker 1: Oh it just breaks my heart. So Dominic called Robert
- 44:10Speaker 1: and he said, Hey, you shouldn't be worried about that.
- 44:14Speaker 1: I've got all of that covered, trust me, bro.
- 44:19Speaker 2: Yes.
- 44:20Speaker 1: Yeah. Dominic was pissed. Both his reputation and life savings
- 44:27Speaker 1: were on the line. The business was doing very well.
- 44:31Speaker 1: They had been selling a bunch of wine, but there
- 44:34Speaker 1: somehow wasn't enough money to keep paying the bills. And
- 44:38Speaker 1: he was like wondering where was the money going? Guys.
- 44:43Speaker 1: It's a question that many others would soon be asking
- 44:46Speaker 1: as well. Dominic knew that he had to get rid
- 44:51Speaker 1: of Robert and had to go to his family members
- 44:54Speaker 1: for help. Yes, I spoiled earlier, he said. So my
- 44:57Speaker 1: family and my partners, my brother and my best friends
- 45:01Speaker 1: came around and said we will do whatever we need
- 45:06Speaker 1: to do, and let's get this guy out. Dominic did
- 45:11Speaker 1: end up getting control of the vineyard, but guys, he
- 45:15Speaker 1: had to pay Robert to step away from it. Quote.
- 45:18Speaker 1: You know, I introduced him as my partner and my friend,
- 45:22Speaker 1: so I brought him into that circle of trust that
- 45:25Speaker 1: we have here. Everybody welcomed him with open arms because
- 45:30Speaker 1: I vouched for him. I had never been burned before.
- 45:36Speaker 1: I was so naive. So guys, just so you know,
- 45:41Speaker 1: most of Napa Valley born raised there. They they give
- 45:48Speaker 1: it to the kids. I mean, you know, everybody. So
- 45:50Speaker 1: for somebody to vouch for you from a family like that,
- 45:55Speaker 1: that's a big deal. Now, Dominic wasn't the only part
- 46:00Speaker 1: person swindled by Robert since he had arrived in Napa.
- 46:04Speaker 1: There was also a wine maker by the name of
- 46:06Speaker 1: Stephen or Steve Birch who had worked with Robert, and
- 46:10Speaker 1: it introduced him to a few celebrities who were interested
- 46:14Speaker 1: in getting into the wine business. Now, Robert soon got
- 46:19Speaker 1: into deals with comic and TV personality Adam Carolla Bodling.
- 46:28Speaker 1: I heard bottling bottling Sangria called mangria.
- 46:35Speaker 2: Of course, yeah by TV uh huh, as well as
- 46:44Speaker 2: the rapper E forty, who guys I had never heard of. No,
- 46:50Speaker 2: I don't know if that is. I'm like, maybe if
- 46:53Speaker 2: I go them might probably be like, oh that. I
- 46:57Speaker 2: feel like I do know him, but I don't know
- 46:59Speaker 2: why anyway.
- 47:00Speaker 1: Robert's packaged some wines for his label Earl Stevens Wines.
- 47:04Speaker 1: Both products did very well, but neither of these celebrities
- 47:09Speaker 1: were ever paid for their fair share. Even Stephen Steve
- 47:14Speaker 1: Burch left with Robert still owing him over ten thousand
- 47:17Speaker 1: dollars now. Stephen Steve said in an interview, no one
- 47:22Speaker 1: that ever put money into something Robert was doing was
- 47:26Speaker 1: ever going to get anything back now. Even Robert's electrician
- 47:34Speaker 1: Miles Davis, said that Robert owed him fifteen thousand dollars.
- 47:40Speaker 1: Davis still ended up being friends with Robert. Despite that,
- 47:45Speaker 1: he said, I'm fine with that. I mean, it wasn't
- 47:49Speaker 1: about the money. It was about you know, there were
- 47:53Speaker 1: concerns that he was in trouble, so I didn't feel
- 47:56Speaker 1: like my little fifteen thousand dollars was anything to worry
- 47:59Speaker 1: about out.
- 48:02Speaker 2: I don't even I don't even know what that means.
- 48:05Speaker 2: I can't my brain can comprehend it being like, what
- 48:07Speaker 2: do you mean fifteen thousand dollars? Doesn't it matter to well?
- 48:12Speaker 2: Like like, I'm all for help with my friends, but
- 48:18Speaker 2: damn does Miles Davis want to be friends with me?
- 48:23Speaker 1: I do.
- 48:24Speaker 2: I won't screw you over, Miles, just give me some
- 48:27Speaker 2: starting casual had great? Oh my okay, Well that that
- 48:32Speaker 2: takes us up to date with these celebrities. Very interesting.
- 48:35Speaker 2: But let's get back to Greg and Francine Nittles, who
- 48:38Speaker 2: we were just talking about the Pardoner with Robert to
- 48:41Speaker 2: start the brewing company. So just a few short months
- 48:46Speaker 2: after the group up doors opened, the excitement of this
- 48:49Speaker 2: new adventure quickly faded away, because, of course, we wouldn't
- 48:54Speaker 2: be here if dinnert right. Our favorite wine writer Lou
- 48:59Speaker 2: Purdue has entered the chats. I mean, how fun is that? Named?
- 49:03Speaker 2: To set you guys, it's fun to try everybody together,
- 49:06Speaker 2: Lou Purdue? LOLU Purdue's so fun. It's just a purples
- 49:10Speaker 2: off the top anyway. Now, Lou was beginning to suspect
- 49:15Speaker 2: that Robert wasn't quite who he wanted everyone to believe
- 49:18Speaker 2: him to be. Remember, Lose a writer, Lou had a
- 49:21Speaker 2: good friend who really liked Kraft Beer and went to
- 49:24Speaker 2: check out Robert's brewery. Turns out that the beer wasn't
- 49:29Speaker 2: even made there. Nope, Robert was just buying kegs from
- 49:33Speaker 2: someone else and passing an office their own. Apparently Lou
- 49:37Speaker 2: Produe's friend, but good guy, so dramatic. Oh there's so
- 49:43Speaker 2: much about Lou Purdue anyway, excuse me. Apparently Lou Produe's
- 49:49Speaker 2: friend confronted Robert about ed Gate, and Robert went ballistic,
- 49:55Speaker 2: quote like he had been found out. Yeah, yeah, that's
- 50:00Speaker 2: I know what's happening here. So wistful in the Vatican,
- 50:04Speaker 2: Rank Kevin, we know why. Maybe I'll bring it up later.
- 50:08Speaker 2: So by March twenty fourteen, this is what six months
- 50:12Speaker 2: after the brew pub opened, the landlord filed a lawsuit
- 50:17Speaker 2: against the grew Phub over Robert not paying rent, which
- 50:21Speaker 2: was scheduled to increase from fifteen thousand dollars to sixty
- 50:27Speaker 2: thousand dollars a month, which I don't even understand. I
- 50:33Speaker 2: don't understand how that even happens.
- 50:34Speaker 1: But because they did. You're just starting your business off.
- 50:38Speaker 1: We'll do that. We'll put most of the money at
- 50:41Speaker 1: the end of your lease. You can just pay a
- 50:45Speaker 1: little bit if you're getting started. I mean they still
- 50:48Speaker 1: do gentlemen handshakes and Napa.
- 50:51Speaker 2: That rent is whatty but okay. So Francine and Greg
- 50:57Speaker 2: had no idea what Robert was up to at the brewery,
- 51:01Speaker 2: and they were very shocked when Robert came to them
- 51:04Speaker 2: one day and announced that he was shutting down the
- 51:07Speaker 2: whole thing. That's right, because it wasn't making enough money.
- 51:13Speaker 2: So the Knapa Point Brewing Club closed its doors in
- 51:16Speaker 2: May May twenty fourteen. The Nettles not only lost two
- 51:21Speaker 2: hundred and fifty thousand dollars of their own money, they
- 51:25Speaker 2: also had encouraged friends to invest as well. They felt
- 51:29Speaker 2: personally betrayed by their supposed friend, Robert Dall, and the
- 51:32Speaker 2: couple pressed criminal charges against Robert. Unfortunately, though, the Nettles
- 51:38Speaker 2: would not be the last financial victim of Robert's I
- 51:43Speaker 2: don't know if anybody's giving a tallly of or how
- 51:45Speaker 2: much money we've even talked about, but it's insane already.
- 51:49Speaker 1: It's it's a lot like two million dollars at least now.
- 51:54Speaker 1: At this point in twenty fourteen, Robert had stopped paying
- 51:57Speaker 1: back the money that he borrowed from the mom, so
- 52:01Speaker 1: Imma had hired former FBI agent turned personal investigator Don King.
- 52:08Speaker 1: Now the dog, the shirt, the necklace, Don is the queen,
- 52:17Speaker 1: and I love it. Okay, just gonna say I love her.
- 52:21Speaker 1: Now she and the truth about Robert's past began to
- 52:26Speaker 1: come to light. She was able to hit the ground
- 52:29Speaker 1: running because this wasn't the first time she had been
- 52:32Speaker 1: hired to look into Doll's background. She discovered that Robert
- 52:37Speaker 1: had a pile of leans against him, civil judgments from
- 52:41Speaker 1: multiple companies adding up to almost two hundred thousand. Basically, guys,
- 52:46Speaker 1: Robert wasn't paying any bills and was charging everything on
- 52:50Speaker 1: credit cards, and there was a long list of lawsuits
- 52:55Speaker 1: against him. Now, I'm going to say that when you're
- 53:01Speaker 1: starting a business, a lot of times people will charge
- 53:05Speaker 1: up their credit cards. But we got to remember this
- 53:07Speaker 1: guy was getting investment money. He got an Adidas bag
- 53:11Speaker 1: of eight hundred thousand dollars, right, great, Yeah, Now a
- 53:17Speaker 1: lot of what Don King had previously discovered about Robert
- 53:20Speaker 1: had happened back in Minnesota. Now, remember the buyers who
- 53:25Speaker 1: bought his Minnesota business. Durberry, why are you laughing at
- 53:29Speaker 1: my Minnesota.
- 53:30Speaker 2: I mean, why not?
- 53:33Speaker 1: I've never been to Minnesota.
- 53:38Speaker 2: Oh, you're funny.
- 53:39Speaker 1: But they had actually sued Robert for selling them a
- 53:43Speaker 1: company that they claimed manufactured a useless product. Now the
- 53:49Speaker 1: case was settled behind closed doors. Okay. Robert and his
- 53:54Speaker 1: wife filed for personal bankruptcy in nineteen ninety seven.
- 54:00Speaker 2: Okay, so this guy's not good with money.
- 54:03Speaker 1: He's not good with it at all at all. Now,
- 54:07Speaker 1: if all of the financial problems weren't enough, she also
- 54:11Speaker 1: found out that Robert had a criminal past as well.
- 54:16Speaker 1: Mm hmm. Robert had been convicted of theft by swindle
- 54:22Speaker 1: not once, but twice back in the late eighties early nineties.
- 54:27Speaker 1: He even spent time in prison for them. He was
- 54:31Speaker 1: a convicted felon.
- 54:33Speaker 2: Oh so, I don't think I've ever heard of a
- 54:39Speaker 2: theft by swindle church before. It sounds very old timey,
- 54:44Speaker 2: and I am obsessed with it.
- 54:47Speaker 1: All I thought of was it made me think of
- 54:49Speaker 1: the tender Swindler, because I had never heard of it either.
- 54:52Speaker 2: I think this week I definitely added the words swindle
- 54:55Speaker 2: into as many conversations I can as swooning as well.
- 55:01Speaker 1: So it's a Pomeranian and they are so cute at
- 55:06Speaker 1: a hyper we have a chia palm, which is half
- 55:10Speaker 1: Chihuahuah half Pomeranian. They're proxious, now are you ready for this?
- 55:16Speaker 1: The cherry on top of this bad mangeria was that
- 55:20Speaker 1: the entity of mod had invested one point two million
- 55:24Speaker 1: dollars in was actually defunct and Robert was using on
- 55:31Speaker 1: a different winery. I mean, Robert was using multiple LLCs
- 55:41Speaker 1: to move money around and to hide his cons and
- 55:45Speaker 1: Mad was very angry and wanted his money back. But Robert,
- 55:50Speaker 1: as we can all guess, was being anything but cooperative.
- 55:54Speaker 2: Go bigger shot speak atch you over here now. Unfortunately
- 56:00Speaker 2: for Robert, don King wasn't the only one looking into
- 56:04Speaker 2: Robert in his swindling. See guys, it's a fun word.
- 56:08Speaker 2: The wine writer legend himself, Will Purdue decided to spell
- 56:14Speaker 2: all the tea on his blog for everyone to see.
- 56:17Speaker 2: Like the messy queen he was. So, Robert was not
- 56:23Speaker 2: heavy about having his dirty laundry aired all over the
- 56:27Speaker 2: internet in Napa Valley, and so he did what no
- 56:30Speaker 2: one should do, and he took his frustrations to the
- 56:34Speaker 2: comments section where he would have rant paragraph by paragraph
- 56:38Speaker 2: by paragraph, and yes much of it was in all calfs,
- 56:43Speaker 2: so you know, exactly how unhinged Robert was about all
- 56:46Speaker 2: of this. Lou Purdue even printed out all of Robert's rantings,
- 56:51Speaker 2: which he measured to be about twenty six feet. I mean,
- 56:58Speaker 2: look at that.
- 57:04Speaker 1: A lot, guys, that's a lot a lot.
- 57:08Speaker 2: Robert's world was crashing down all around him, and it
- 57:12Speaker 2: was crashing as fast and hard lovely. I don't think
- 57:17Speaker 2: this is going to go well.
- 57:19Speaker 1: And that is not what she said. So with everything
- 57:24Speaker 1: coming about out about Robert, what that is so a
- 57:33Speaker 1: cvous receipt.
- 57:36Speaker 2: Oh sorry, I'm sorry, but.
- 57:39Speaker 1: Mad was furious was seeing all of this. He may
- 57:42Speaker 1: had seemed like a passive guy, but guys, he was
- 57:46Speaker 1: not going to let someone like Robert take advantage of him. Okay,
- 57:49Speaker 1: he'd put all of his life savings into this venture.
- 57:54Speaker 1: Now a Mod's attorney, David Wiseblood, I mean, guys, everyone
- 58:00Speaker 1: has really cool names in this. Did you produ David Wiseblood?
- 58:05Speaker 2: I mean down King, King Miles say this, I mean
- 58:11Speaker 2: literally a whole cast. It's amazing.
- 58:13Speaker 1: Now in Mad had this to say to David, and
- 58:17Speaker 1: Mod came to me saying, I have this problem. So
- 58:20Speaker 1: I looked at it and said, yeah, you have a problem.
- 58:24Speaker 1: So we devised the strategy. So the strategy was basically
- 58:30Speaker 1: to file a lawsuit in NAPA against Robert to get
- 58:33Speaker 1: control of the collateral and to prevent stuff from disappearing. Okay,
- 58:40Speaker 1: I mean that's of wine and stuff. I mean that's
- 58:44Speaker 1: that's a lot of money and the vines. And after
- 58:48Speaker 1: nineteen court hearings in four months, which guys, that's a
- 58:53Speaker 1: long time to be in court. Okay, that's a lot.
- 58:57Speaker 2: I mean once a week.
- 59:00Speaker 1: In four months now, because I doubt they were like bev.
- 59:06Speaker 1: They weren't doing half days and all these breaks.
- 59:10Speaker 2: These are just hearings. They even went to trial. No,
- 59:14Speaker 2: oh my.
- 59:14Speaker 1: Gosh, a judge granted the injunction prohibiting Robert from selling
- 59:19Speaker 1: any inventory, which guys, in theory, should have shut down
- 59:23Speaker 1: his wine making and selling businesses. But to no one's surprise,
- 59:31Speaker 1: Robert didn't take that too seriously and he was secretly
- 59:37Speaker 1: taking and hiding equipment and trying to sell it all off. Guys,
- 59:44Speaker 1: those barrels hold a lot of wine. That I mean,
- 59:51Speaker 1: just the barrels themselves are thousands of dollars. Okay. Now,
- 59:58Speaker 1: Robert hired attorney Jasmine duel In Kosha Barakam and they
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: filed a counter lawsuit against a mod because that's what
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: attorneys do, right.
- 1:00:12Speaker 2: And now, you guys, we all know that lawyers are
- 1:00:15Speaker 2: going to lawyer and do their best to curate a
- 1:00:18Speaker 2: better image for their client. But what they had to
- 1:00:22Speaker 2: say about having an interview after all of this made
- 1:00:27Speaker 2: me roll my eyes so hard. I was like, how
- 1:00:30Speaker 2: am I going to buy these out of the back
- 1:00:31Speaker 2: of my skull? Because this is ridiculous. Okay, this is
- 1:00:34Speaker 2: after everything we're going to talk to night happened is
- 1:00:36Speaker 2: when they gave this interview. Okay. So they claim that
- 1:00:41Speaker 2: there's a lot more than what the headline said about
- 1:00:44Speaker 2: their former client. They said Robert was a clever businessman
- 1:00:48Speaker 2: but was in no way a crook. Okay, sure, jan
- 1:00:54Speaker 2: They claimed that they believe he had every intention to
- 1:00:57Speaker 2: pay back the entire loan to Ahmad. Okay, Amber heard,
- 1:01:03Speaker 2: and then he was a stand up guy. That he
- 1:01:07Speaker 2: was just your classic all American risk taking entrepreneur who
- 1:01:11Speaker 2: puts it all on the line and at the last
- 1:01:14Speaker 2: minute it comes out a hero. Are we been talking
- 1:01:18Speaker 2: about the same person here, because that is not what happens. Okay,
- 1:01:22Speaker 2: it's not what happens at all. But okay, while they
- 1:01:26Speaker 2: admit that Robert had his fair share of failed business
- 1:01:29Speaker 2: ventures before this business with the mod was growing, and
- 1:01:33Speaker 2: wasn't some elaborate Ponzi scheme or a house of cards? Okay,
- 1:01:38Speaker 2: all right. My personal favorite quote was from his attorney
- 1:01:42Speaker 2: Krusha Berikum comes after he is asked, but don't you
- 1:01:46Speaker 2: think that proves that he's a thief? And somehow, with
- 1:01:50Speaker 2: what I'm assuming had to be with a straight face,
- 1:01:53Speaker 2: he said, quote, not at all. A thief takes money
- 1:01:58Speaker 2: and runs with it, doesn't go to court. What.
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: I'm sorry that that is something I almost could hear. Brennan. Okay, okay,
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: that's whoto. Could you unsquint your eyes? Just unsquirt your.
- 1:02:24Speaker 2: Eyes, sir? I mean I know they got to do
- 1:02:26Speaker 2: their job. I get it, But like, sir, come on,
- 1:02:29Speaker 2: that's egregious to say. See Kelly p agrees, is he?
- 1:02:36Speaker 2: I love that? So you guys. He also goes on
- 1:02:39Speaker 2: to say, quote, he was a risk taker, and when
- 1:02:43Speaker 2: you take risks sometimes you end up harming other people
- 1:02:46Speaker 2: as well. But our system is set up for that.
- 1:02:50Speaker 2: What okay, sir? Okay, okay.
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: Now the interesting thing I want you to look at
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: on his card attorney at Law, Beverly Hills, California, Employment law,
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: group employment and labor and personal injury. Nowhere does he
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: do corporate law for partnerships. Anybody noticed that he's an
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: attorney who gets paid probably on a contingency fee, and
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: only gets paid if they win. So I noticed that,
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: and I was like, yeah, no, no, no, no no. Now,
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: according to Robert's lawyers, in the wine business, sometimes you win,
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: sometimes you lose. Guess what, attorneys, that's any business. I
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: don't know why you think it's just the wine business, okay,
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: so oh. And they also insisted that a Mod was
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: actually the real villain in this bad business deal, that
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: he was so angry that he was determined to destroy
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: Robert's business. They were asked if he thought this was
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: a scam for a Mod, and Kusha said absolutely. Why
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: would one come up with that much cash and why
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: it's his life savings? And he thought you were going
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: to get the grapes cheaper. Guys, they do have a
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: market in Napa where you can go buy grapes that
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: the winery.
- 1:04:39Speaker 2: Doesn't use, you know, doesn't know about it.
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: Now. They also implied that it was a Mod's fault,
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: and guys, I have a problem with victim blaming.
- 1:04:57Speaker 2: You just don't okay, this was all said dirt after
- 1:05:02Speaker 2: How were we going to finish this story as this
- 1:05:05Speaker 2: guy's second Yeah?
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: Now, like I said, they implied it was a mod's fault.
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: Robert couldn't pay him or anyone else back thanks to
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: the court's injunctions on him. So it's a mod's fault
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: for finding out that the wineries defunct. Guys, remember how
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: the winery den How dare you now? Robert's other attorney,
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: Jasmine Duel, said his barrels of wine were taken, his
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: cars were taken, his brewing systems were taken. He wasn't
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: an impossible place. Just hold on, let me get out
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: my little tiny badley in here, girl, okay, girl Now.
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: In early of March twenty fifteen, as surprised to almost everyone,
- 1:06:03Speaker 1: it seemed there was a breakthrough in the lawsuit. The
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: lawyers had come to a deal and it looked like
- 1:06:10Speaker 1: Emmaud would get at least some of his money back. Guys,
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: just you know, in a situation like this, attorneys say,
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: if both parties are unhappy, it's a good deal.
- 1:06:23Speaker 2: That is true.
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: Okay, So they were. It's not like they were happy,
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: but they made a deal. But instead of going to
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: any of the law offices, Robert told Ahmad to meet
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: him at Dolls Vineyard. Robert insisted on settling in person. Now,
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: Ammond's lawyer, David Wiselood begged him not to go, but
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: Ahmad said he was going anyway. Guys, look how beautiful
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: that is.
- 1:06:56Speaker 2: It's so beautiful. All right, I guess I'll get to
- 1:07:01Speaker 2: this part. So on March sixteenth, twenty fifteen, they met
- 1:07:08Speaker 2: a mod brought Maddie. Robert didn't hug, he didn't smile,
- 1:07:13Speaker 2: and there was tension. Legal teams were on speaker phone
- 1:07:18Speaker 2: and Maud's attorney, David Wiseblood said there was a definite
- 1:07:22Speaker 2: agreement on what was going to be paid to a mod.
- 1:07:25Speaker 2: It was just so baily calm. But of course Robert,
- 1:07:31Speaker 2: being a super stable individual, decided to know about and said, quote,
- 1:07:36Speaker 2: I don't give a shit what the lawyers negotiated. This
- 1:07:40Speaker 2: is my offer end quote, which was basically fifty percent
- 1:07:45Speaker 2: less than what was agreed to. But a real stand
- 1:07:49Speaker 2: up guy, as his lawyers like to refer to him, right,
- 1:07:52Speaker 2: I'm going to stand up guy. So a Moud responded,
- 1:07:56Speaker 2: it wasn't the lawyers who came up with these numbers,
- 1:07:59Speaker 2: it was us, and I'm not here to renegotiate. Robert
- 1:08:04Speaker 2: did not like that things were heated, and the attorney
- 1:08:08Speaker 2: suggested a short break in the negotiations to calm down. Now.
- 1:08:12Speaker 2: Wise Blood expected to hear from a MOD in five
- 1:08:15Speaker 2: minutes or so, and he waited for his client to
- 1:08:18Speaker 2: call him back, but that never happened. So after numerous
- 1:08:23Speaker 2: unanswered phone calls, mister Wiseblood got an email saying there
- 1:08:28Speaker 2: was a shooting at the vineyard. He emailed Robert's attorneys
- 1:08:32Speaker 2: to find out if it was true, and they didn't
- 1:08:35Speaker 2: know what had happened either, but thought to themselves that
- 1:08:38Speaker 2: maybe a MOD had lost it. It turns out that
- 1:08:43Speaker 2: once the lawyers were off the phone, Robert presented a
- 1:08:46Speaker 2: MOD with a new settlement agreement, which apparently read more
- 1:08:51Speaker 2: like a manifesto. It accused the MOD of trying to
- 1:08:54Speaker 2: ruin his life, demanding a Mod admit the whole lawsuit
- 1:08:59Speaker 2: was personal, a vendetta, and that Robert owed and Mod nothing.
- 1:09:05Speaker 2: Robert demanded that he sign it right then and there,
- 1:09:08Speaker 2: and a Mod, of course, would never sign it, so
- 1:09:13Speaker 2: Robert grabbed a gun and shot him. The two men
- 1:09:17Speaker 2: came tumbling out of the bar. The MOD ran through
- 1:09:21Speaker 2: the vines, dodging bullets. Robert was hunting him through the
- 1:09:25Speaker 2: vineyard with a silencer equipped twenty two caliber semi automatic pistol.
- 1:09:32Speaker 2: A MOD was able to call nine one one during
- 1:09:35Speaker 2: the chase, saying, he shot me. He's coming after me
- 1:09:39Speaker 2: in his truck. Robert must have known he wasn't going
- 1:09:43Speaker 2: to be able to catch him on foot. Remember how
- 1:09:45Speaker 2: a MOD ran marathons, and we've seen Robert, he really
- 1:09:49Speaker 2: wasn't touching you on foot, Okay, So he turned around
- 1:09:52Speaker 2: and hoalked into his black suv with his gun in
- 1:09:56Speaker 2: his hands. He was most likely hoping to cut the
- 1:10:00Speaker 2: off if he ran out onto the road, so a
- 1:10:04Speaker 2: MOD stayed on the phone with the nine one one dispatcher,
- 1:10:07Speaker 2: who already sent deputies to the scene. AMD made it
- 1:10:11Speaker 2: to the road just in time to see the cruisers
- 1:10:14Speaker 2: approaching the vineyard and they saw him. He thought he
- 1:10:18Speaker 2: was safe, but unfortunately Robert had caught up. He got
- 1:10:24Speaker 2: out of his car, stood over a very wounded Amad,
- 1:10:29Speaker 2: and shot him point blank in the head. Robert, then, guy,
- 1:10:37Speaker 2: now this guy. Robert then got back into his SUV
- 1:10:43Speaker 2: and took off from the scene as police chased him
- 1:10:47Speaker 2: for about ten miles away from the crime scene. The
- 1:10:50Speaker 2: deputies had seen him kill a mood. Much of Napa
- 1:10:54Speaker 2: Valley knew about his bad business dealings, that there were
- 1:10:57Speaker 2: lawsuits and depth collectors everywhere, and I imagine at this
- 1:11:02Speaker 2: point Robert knew it was game over. There was no
- 1:11:06Speaker 2: way he was going to be able to swindle and
- 1:11:08Speaker 2: weasel his way out of this one. And as the
- 1:11:12Speaker 2: police were closing in on him, he shot himself in
- 1:11:15Speaker 2: the head and died so close, Coward so close and
- 1:11:25Speaker 2: Maud was so close.
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: Oh now I know, and I agree with Lady and Gray.
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: Why a silencer? Very legal, first of all, But why
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: a silencer? Now? No one knows the extent of what
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: Robert had planned for that day, but there was some
- 1:11:47Speaker 1: evidence that Robert may have been ready to kill more
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: people than ess a mod Okay and Robert's car, they
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: found what police called a murder kit, which had gloves,
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: zip ties, bleach burner phones, a hazmat suit, and a
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: list of other people Robert wanted to kill. Geez jeez.
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: He felt that people on the list had set out
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: to ruin him his reputation. This guy cannot take any accountability. Okay,
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: let's just say he cannot take any accountability. Okay. Now,
- 1:12:35Speaker 1: they also found over seven hundred rounds of ammunition. Okay,
- 1:12:42Speaker 1: that's a lot of flipping.
- 1:12:53Speaker 2: Yeah, that's exactly what you think it is.
- 1:12:55Speaker 1: Okay, that's a little bag of Mary Jane. Now, Robert
- 1:13:02Speaker 1: was a convicted felon, guys, which means he should not
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: be in possession of a gun. He is not allowed
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: to own a gun or be in possession. Now, during
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: the autopsy, it was discovered that Emmaud was shot five times,
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: including a final kill shot to the head. Now, just
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: a few days after the murder suicide, dal Vineyard's tasting
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: room was padlocked and an eviction notice was taped to
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: the door due to a long list of alleged lease violations. Guys,
- 1:13:40Speaker 1: those poor vines, they were so traumatized. Now, Robert's last
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: failures and the devastating loved legacy he left behind. Now,
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: in April of twenty fifteen, another NAPA based grower sued
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: Robert's state and the defunct winery to recover over thirty
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: five thousand dollars owed to them for grapes that Robert
- 1:14:08Speaker 1: had purchased. Now, guys, what is interesting about this lawsuit
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: is that neither Robert or any of his wineries had
- 1:14:18Speaker 1: a processing license, guys, which means he couldn't use the
- 1:14:23Speaker 1: grapes to make anything.
- 1:14:25Speaker 2: Wow.
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: So trust me, bro, handshake deal. You just sell grapes
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: to somebody because you like them. They've got charisma. He's
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: not even legally allowed to do anything with the grapes.
- 1:14:43Speaker 2: Oh this guy.
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: Now, the courts in May appointed a managing receiver to
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: manage the affairs and assets for the litigation against Robert Dahl,
- 1:14:57Speaker 1: the winery and the brewery. So in May, Immad Taphyllis
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: family found a wrongful death suit and Robert's wife and
- 1:15:08Speaker 1: kids they got out of Naple, which was probably smart
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: for them, and moved back to Minnesota.
- 1:15:15Speaker 2: Did you see who his wife married? I don't think
- 1:15:18Speaker 2: we included this in the story. So his wife, by
- 1:15:21Speaker 2: the way, married Miles Davis from earlier in the store.
- 1:15:26Speaker 2: Earlier his electrician that he owed fifteen grand too, I
- 1:15:31Speaker 2: guess saw him and then missus got married. So some
- 1:15:36Speaker 2: tea for you guys, now, I.
- 1:15:38Speaker 1: Mean he came over to collect some money was Oh,
- 1:15:41Speaker 1: they had some tea, they hit it off.
- 1:15:45Speaker 2: I don't know, I don't know. So you guys, you know.
- 1:15:54Speaker 1: More worried about Ahmad shooting you happened? Really? Come on now,
- 1:16:01Speaker 1: look at that sable though.
- 1:16:03Speaker 2: Look oh yeah, you know if if he hadn't been
- 1:16:09Speaker 2: able to run away and call nine one one, would
- 1:16:12Speaker 2: Mod have been Robert's only target? You know, many people
- 1:16:17Speaker 2: involved with Robert feared that they would could have easily
- 1:16:21Speaker 2: ended up on Robert's kill Liss that day, you know,
- 1:16:23Speaker 2: the p I don King, lawyer David Westblood, former business
- 1:16:28Speaker 2: partner Greg Middle and yes, Lama's boyfriend, writer Do Purdue
- 1:16:35Speaker 2: all wondered if things had gone differently, if they would
- 1:16:39Speaker 2: have been next.
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: And married Perdue, you would be Lama Purdue.
- 1:16:49Speaker 2: I don't know, hope if you would feel about that, But
- 1:16:51Speaker 2: maybe I don't see what we can work out. I mean,
- 1:16:54Speaker 2: we produce. I do like older gentleman, but he's a
- 1:16:57Speaker 2: little older. But you know what, we'll keep our options
- 1:17:02Speaker 2: open here, am I? Anyway? So Dominic Foppoley remember him,
- 1:17:08Speaker 2: was worried that Robert could have come after him as well.
- 1:17:11Speaker 2: Dominic had actually tried to warn a Mod and give
- 1:17:15Speaker 2: him a heads up that he was having all sorts
- 1:17:17Speaker 2: of problems with Robert. When asked how he heard about
- 1:17:21Speaker 2: the murders suicide, Dominic said, somebody pulled up their phone
- 1:17:27Speaker 2: and they showed me the article of what happened. I
- 1:17:30Speaker 2: was just in shock and immediately and honestly, I started crying.
- 1:17:35Speaker 2: And it was a mix of guilt because I guess
- 1:17:38Speaker 2: I didn't do enough to warn a moud about him.
- 1:17:43Speaker 2: That's sad. But before you go feeld too sad. Hold on.
- 1:17:47Speaker 2: So Dominic Foprioli, whatever his name is, the Prince of Napa,
- 1:17:55Speaker 2: went on to become the mayor of Windsor, California, from
- 1:17:58Speaker 2: December twenty eighteen May of twenty twenty one. He was
- 1:18:03Speaker 2: running for another office, but all of that was put
- 1:18:06Speaker 2: on hold when he I think it brings this way,
- 1:18:10Speaker 2: was charged with multiple sexual assaults against nine different women.
- 1:18:18Speaker 2: Look at him with a stupid hat, his stupid bow tie,
- 1:18:20Speaker 2: a stupid sash. Look at that guy, I mean anyway,
- 1:18:24Speaker 2: So there is that because the story wasn't messy enough already.
- 1:18:28Speaker 1: In his family was a big deal in the valley.
- 1:18:34Speaker 2: Yeah, there's a stupid face anyway. So director Jonathan Kesselman,
- 1:18:41Speaker 2: who directed the movie that Mod had you know, financed,
- 1:18:45Speaker 2: spoke about Maud quote, he was a really sweet, kind
- 1:18:49Speaker 2: and generous guy, and I just felt I needed to
- 1:18:52Speaker 2: say that. So it's on the record. You know, there's
- 1:18:55Speaker 2: some legacy of a mod where you know he was remembered.
- 1:19:00Speaker 2: He was a good person.
- 1:19:03Speaker 1: I'm sorry, I'm reading these signs. I don't get those
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: signs right, make sour grapes. In other words, yeah, mayor
- 1:19:13Speaker 1: your own body. You're not a good listener.
- 1:19:16Speaker 3: No, I can't, Okay, Yeah, anyway, Ahmad was the best
- 1:19:27Speaker 3: of us.
- 1:19:28Speaker 2: Look at him. He was like such a nice guy
- 1:19:31Speaker 2: he does.
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: Look at him.
- 1:19:32Speaker 2: He deserved a patio with a view, a bottle he
- 1:19:37Speaker 2: helped create, and his dog Maggie asleep at his feet. Instead,
- 1:19:43Speaker 2: he got a monster in a wine cave who ended
- 1:19:46Speaker 2: his life too early. We also need to remember Robert's children,
- 1:19:51Speaker 2: who are sadly also victims in this horrid tale. I
- 1:19:55Speaker 2: couldn't imagine living in the shadow that Robert put over everyone.
- 1:20:01Speaker 2: Oh that guy. So I would like to end the
- 1:20:05Speaker 2: story reading a short quote that Robert had told the
- 1:20:10Speaker 2: landlord when he was applying to lease the property in
- 1:20:13Speaker 2: twenty thirteen. Not only did Robert tell him that he
- 1:20:18Speaker 2: was earning millions, he also said quote, I have made
- 1:20:24Speaker 2: mistakes in my life, and I always take responsibility for
- 1:20:29Speaker 2: them and make them right. I pride myself on doing
- 1:20:34Speaker 2: what I say I do and believe that a man
- 1:20:37Speaker 2: is only as good as his word. End quote.
- 1:20:44Speaker 1: Liar, liar, pants on fire.
- 1:20:52Speaker 2: And that is the end of that story. H Terry,
- 1:20:55Speaker 2: what closing thoughts do you have about I'm.
- 1:20:59Speaker 1: Going to just say, if you made it this far
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: in your glass is an empty You've got better restraint
- 1:21:08Speaker 1: than I did. Because writing this, this case got to
- 1:21:11Speaker 1: me because I love Napa. When we moved to California,
- 1:21:16Speaker 1: our goal was to retire in Yonville there in the valley,
- 1:21:20Speaker 1: and the people are so kind, down to earth, they
- 1:21:25Speaker 1: are lovely people. And to think that somebody like him
- 1:21:30Speaker 1: came in and did this. You know, it's not just
- 1:21:33Speaker 1: about the wine or the fraud. It's about the trust
- 1:21:39Speaker 1: that people gave him. They trusted him, and let's think
- 1:21:44Speaker 1: about it. Immaud was the real deal. He was smart,
- 1:21:47Speaker 1: he was kind, he was thoughtful, and guys, he ended
- 1:21:52Speaker 1: up the center of a nightmare because someone else refused
- 1:21:57Speaker 1: to take responsibility and guys, like I said, this took
- 1:22:02Speaker 1: place in my happy place, and when I go to NAPA,
- 1:22:06Speaker 1: you can just breathe there. Everywhere you turn, it's beautiful.
- 1:22:11Speaker 1: You don't turn one direction and say, oh, that's ugly.
- 1:22:15Speaker 1: Everywhere is beautiful. So this is just a reminder that
- 1:22:20Speaker 1: sometimes evil shows up even with a vineyard view, and
- 1:22:27Speaker 1: still they're horrible. So I just want people to take
- 1:22:31Speaker 1: away from this. Don't be afraid to ask the hard questions,
- 1:22:35Speaker 1: even if it feels awkwards. Look past their charm, google
- 1:22:40Speaker 1: their name, trust your gut because you should have done
- 1:22:47Speaker 1: a little bit more. I'm not blaming anybody, but you've
- 1:22:50Speaker 1: got to check out. And I want to say to
- 1:22:52Speaker 1: a Mod's family, I see your heartbreak. And I hope
- 1:22:57Speaker 1: telling this story helps more people who he was. He
- 1:23:02Speaker 1: was truly an angel on earth and he was just
- 1:23:06Speaker 1: trying to make something good. And I hope that his
- 1:23:08Speaker 1: pred Maddie is taken care of.
- 1:23:13Speaker 2: Yeah, hold on, in just a second.
- 1:23:19Speaker 1: That would be the one and only a both feet.
- 1:23:25Speaker 2: Who was That's okay, they've been so sweet all day.
- 1:23:29Speaker 2: I've been on all day and it's fine. So my
- 1:23:33Speaker 2: closing thought is, you know, I find that most people
- 1:23:37Speaker 2: myself included. Myself included. I think they're impervious because they're
- 1:23:43Speaker 2: too smart or they can read people, and that they
- 1:23:46Speaker 2: would never fall for a scammer, a con man, or
- 1:23:50Speaker 2: a swindler. And I'm sure everyone in this story thought
- 1:23:54Speaker 2: that too, But people like this have been around for millennia,
- 1:23:57Speaker 2: and honestly, I think with the Internet it's got so
- 1:24:01Speaker 2: much worse. Actually, you think it'd be easier to find
- 1:24:04Speaker 2: stuff out about people, but I don't think so. I
- 1:24:06Speaker 2: think it's very difficult. And you know, I'm not saying
- 1:24:09Speaker 2: to stop trusting people and think they're out to get
- 1:24:12Speaker 2: you know, you know, stay vigilant, do some research. The
- 1:24:16Speaker 2: deal sounds too good to be true. It probably is unless,
- 1:24:22Speaker 2: but not least, actions speak louder than words. Anyone. Anyone
- 1:24:28Speaker 2: can spew some bulshit, okay, but do they deliver. That's
- 1:24:32Speaker 2: what you need to keep keep an eye out on.
- 1:24:35Speaker 2: Look at their actions, not their words, because that's how
- 1:24:38Speaker 2: common work, you know. And maybe tonight, after we're all
- 1:24:42Speaker 2: done here in memory of a mod maybe you can
- 1:24:46Speaker 2: go and watch Jimmy Bestwood American Hero, because just because
- 1:24:51Speaker 2: he's gone doesn't mean that his dreams can't still come true.
- 1:24:57Speaker 2: So that's my farewell for this evening. Wow, I'm probably
- 1:25:02Speaker 2: gonna try to find it to watch it.
- 1:25:04Speaker 1: I want to give a little tidbit. If you've never
- 1:25:07Speaker 1: been to Napa, if you go to the Francis Ford
- 1:25:11Speaker 1: Coppola Winery, it used to be the Inglebrook Winery and
- 1:25:17Speaker 1: then Copla bought it. They actually have stuff from the Godfather.
- 1:25:22Speaker 1: They have the car from the Godfather. They actually have
- 1:25:25Speaker 1: memorabilia in the winery that you can walk through.
- 1:25:29Speaker 2: I love that.
- 1:25:32Speaker 1: You don't drink. Napa is a beautiful place. Okay, now, guys,
- 1:25:38Speaker 1: next week, once again, this is former producer Lama's case.
- 1:25:47Speaker 1: How did a Quiet Team become a face eating killer? Really?
- 1:25:54Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 1:25:56Speaker 1: The Austin Haruf Harriff I think it's Hara Pariff case.
- 1:26:01Speaker 1: It's next Thursday on June twelfth, at eight pm Eastern,
- 1:26:06Speaker 1: seven pm Central. Yes, and I'm not going to say
- 1:26:12Speaker 1: I'm looking forward to it.
- 1:26:14Speaker 2: Well, if anyone might think they know what this case
- 1:26:17Speaker 2: is about or think they know the story, you may not.
- 1:26:21Speaker 2: You may be very surprised and what you've heard and
- 1:26:24Speaker 2: what the actual truth of the situation is. So I'm
- 1:26:29Speaker 2: very excited to talk about it.
- 1:26:31Speaker 1: And I want to give a shout out to our team.
- 1:26:35Speaker 1: The pictures on our thumbnails. I mean, how many hours
- 1:26:40Speaker 1: do they sit there and look at videos to find
- 1:26:44Speaker 1: the perfect eye rolls, mouth open?
- 1:26:48Speaker 2: I mean just going to I imagine. I know I've
- 1:26:50Speaker 2: been in Amy's cap cut. It's just videos after videos
- 1:26:55Speaker 2: of my face all over and I'm like, I think
- 1:26:58Speaker 2: you're kind of obsessed with me.
- 1:27:01Speaker 1: Kelly P. We are planning to go to NAPA for
- 1:27:05Speaker 1: our anniversary in August. Since we didn't get to celebrate
- 1:27:08Speaker 1: our twenty year, I think we're going to do our
- 1:27:10Speaker 1: twenty one year there. I will be sure to go
- 1:27:12Speaker 1: live and share pictures. I mean when I say I
- 1:27:16Speaker 1: love Napa. One of my dogs, Miss Maddie, who was
- 1:27:21Speaker 1: a teacup Yorky, her ashes are spread at Saint Super
- 1:27:26Speaker 1: Vineyard on the seven yard blunt grapes. They let us
- 1:27:29Speaker 1: do that. She even had her own bandanna for them,
- 1:27:33Speaker 1: and so the people there are amazing. Okay, now, guys,
- 1:27:40Speaker 1: if you have a suggestion for a case, you can
- 1:27:43Speaker 1: email us or I don't know if the mods have
