- 0:18What's the game, John?
- 0:19Jon: sir. So I think it's appropriate, since it's our movie of the week is
- 0:25from 1996, I won't spoil it yet, we do the 1996 Xenomania Horror Awards.
- 0:37Kearns: this is salacious.
- 0:38Jon: I whipped up four categories for us.
- 0:42I'll start with the one I think is the most basic
- 0:46Kearns: Okay.
- 0:48Jon: best hero.
- 0:52Ryan: From 1996,
- 0:54Kearns: what
- 0:55Jon: From
- 0:55Kearns: I'm taking?
- 0:56Matthew Lillard.
- 0:58Matthew Lillard didn't scream 'cause he is the hero of that movie.
- 1:01Those kids deserve to die.
- 1:02Jon: All right, well,
- 1:04Kearns: awful nineties kids.
- 1:06Jon: Um,
- 1:07Kearns: No,
- 1:08Jon: the nominees
- 1:09Kearns: wait, wait.
- 1:10Hold on.
- 1:11Jon: Nev Campbell as Sidney
- 1:13Kearns: boo
- 1:14Jon: in
- 1:15Kearns: boo.
- 1:15I didn't know we were getting a list given to us.
- 1:17Ryan: we were guessing.
- 1:18I was already
- 1:20Jon: Oh yeah, we are, because can't trust you guys.
- 1:24Not say that Matthew Lillard is a hero
- 1:28Kearns: He is a hero.
- 1:29Ryan: he's always,
- 1:30Kearns: Watch, summer catch, bro.
- 1:33Jon: in Summer Catch.
- 1:34He isn't even a hero in Summer Catch.
- 1:37Kearns: He bangs the mom.
- 1:38They're like the lady who's like putting them up in the house.
- 1:42I think he eats salad off of her or something.
- 1:44He's a hero to me.
- 1:45Ryan: There goes my hero.
- 1:48Jon: go.
- 1:49Um, our second nominee is George Clooney as Seth Gecko in from Dusk till Dawn.
- 1:56Ryan: Okay.
- 1:58Jon: also have Michael J. Fox as Frank Banister in the
- 2:03Ryan: Yeah.
- 2:04Kearns: Brighteners?
- 2:05Ryan: sir.
- 2:06Jon: fourth nominee is Fred Ward as Earl Bassett in Tremors too,
- 2:12Ryan: Okay.
- 2:13Kearns: Oh, you made it hard.
- 2:15Jon: and our fifth nominee.
- 2:18It a co nominee.
- 2:19It's Jed and Jody from Uncle Sam.
- 2:23Ryan: Hmm.
- 2:26Kearns: Well, it's not then.
- 2:28Ryan: Jody.
- 2:29Kearns: So let's see.
- 2:31I mean, you made it, it wasn't really a thing until you brought up tremors too.
- 2:37'cause it was Michael J. Fox bar none.
- 2:40Ryan: Yeah.
- 2:40Kearns: I,
- 2:42Ryan: slowly
- 2:42Kearns: Earl man.
- 2:43Ryan: Right now.
- 2:44I'm caught between two.
- 2:47Jon: I am Michael J. Fox.
- 2:50Kearns: I am a little shaky on him
- 2:52Ryan: Because you want Fred Ward.
- 2:54that's why on that,
- 2:55Kearns: All right.
- 2:56Yeah, God.
- 2:59Um, I'm gonna stick with Michael J. Fox because that movie was pretty damn cool.
- 3:03I saw that in the theaters.
- 3:05Ryan: Yeah,
- 3:06Kearns: times.
- 3:07Ryan: Michael J. Fox too.
- 3:08Reggie Banister Frighteners is a class act, if it wasn't Nev Campbell, it was
- 3:13Matthew Lillard, I would've taken that.
- 3:15What Frank Banister,
- 3:17Jon: Yeah, Frank Banister.
- 3:18You're confusing your banister Reggie.
- 3:20Ryan: did I say Reggie Banister.
- 3:22Jon: You sure did.
- 3:25Back, back from the days when we were a Fantasm Fan podcast.
- 3:29Ryan: Hey, I'll,
- 3:30Kearns: Yeah, exactly.
- 3:31Ryan: Accept we need Reggie in our life.
- 3:34Kearns: I love that we started with that franchise.
- 3:36Jon: J. Fox.
- 3:38Ryan: I like
- 3:38Kearns: Hell yes, dude.
- 3:39Jon: So if we have heroes, we have to have villains.
- 3:43Ryan: Jake.
- 3:44Kearns: Matthew Lillard.
- 3:45Ryan: Jake Busey
- 3:46Kearns: He's gonna be one or
- 3:47Jon: our first nominee for best villain is Ghostface from Scream,
- 3:53Kearns: No, just Matthew Lillard.
- 3:55Not the other guy.
- 3:56Ryan: Not
- 3:57Kearns: the, the Luke Perry knockoff.
- 4:00Yeah.
- 4:00No.
- 4:00Ryan: Perry Aloff.
- 4:02That's the poor man's Johnny Depp.
- 4:03Come on now.
- 4:04Kearns: Yep.
- 4:05Jon: even
- 4:05Kearns: the poorer man's.
- 4:06Johnny Depp.
- 4:08No.
- 4:08Well, let's hear where the other ones are.
- 4:10Jon: our nominees are thick here.
- 4:11number two is Myron from Head of the Family.
- 4:14I.
- 4:16Kearns: Okay.
- 4:16I. Okay.
- 4:18That's a bit more obscure.
- 4:21Jon: our
- 4:21Ryan: I can't.
- 4:23Jon: Satan pandemonium from dusk till
- 4:26Kearns: Mm.
- 4:28Ryan: Okay.
- 4:28Kearns: reasons.
- 4:29Jon: our fourth nominee is Sam Harbor from Uncle Sam
- 4:36Kearns: Also, probably not going to win.
- 4:39Jon: our fifth Bartlett from the Frighteners,
- 4:44Ryan: that's what you're gonna do.
- 4:47Kearns: Wasn't there Busey in that movie?
- 4:49Ryan: Jake
- 4:50Kearns: Jake Busey in the Frighteners
- 4:52Ryan: He
- 4:52Kearns: didn't make the list.
- 4:53Ryan: No.
- 4:54Kearns: Best supporting villain
- 4:55Jon: the middle Busey.
- 4:57Ryan: supporting
- 4:59Ah,
- 5:01Kearns: The one from Arrival the religious fanatic.
- 5:05right.
- 5:07Lemme get my head in the game here.
- 5:09trying not to be too horny for this.
- 5:10And just going with Satan Boob Oso, um,
- 5:17Jon: It's hard not to, huh?
- 5:20Kearns: it's hard not to be
- 5:22Ryan: easy.
- 5:22I'm going with the sweep.
- 5:23Johnny Bartlett.
- 5:24Jake Busey, 1996 Frighteners, It's phenomenal.
- 5:28Johnny Bartlett, Jake Busey, he encompasses his father's in insanity
- 5:33in that film and he does a great
- 5:35Kearns: and life it's genetic
- 5:38Ryan: watching him take care of his father, he's his home, house, I guess his
- 5:42house giver now, or keeper, whatever they
- 5:45Kearns: Home caregiver.
- 5:45Ryan: well, his caregiver and you see like how mind is deteriorated ever
- 5:50since the motorcycle accident and stuff.
- 5:52And Jake, Jake does a lot and you can see he's, he is unhinged, but
- 5:56he's a little more seen than good old
- 5:59Kearns: Is there documentary or Do you have webcam footage?
- 6:01What's going on How do you know this?
- 6:03Ryan: like, he'll do YouTube
- 6:04Kearns: that's cool.
- 6:05Ryan: just to keep him in the spotlight.
- 6:06'cause Gary thinks he's a star
- 6:08Kearns: I like butter sausage and he's not there.
- 6:12been not there for a minute now.
- 6:14He's basically grown into his character from Lethal Weapon.
- 6:17Um, okay.
- 6:19Ryan: come on Mr. Joshua.
- 6:20Kearns: I think I am gonna stick with from D till dawn
- 6:23Jon: I,
- 6:24I'm
- 6:24Kearns: 'cause to lure them in.
- 6:26Jon: I'm going
- 6:26Ryan: Okay.
- 6:26Jon: embrace
- 6:27Kearns: them in.
- 6:29Yeah.
- 6:29I think I, I keep thinking the list and I'm just keep coming back to it.
- 6:34That was such a cool transformation.
- 6:35Well, it wasn't the best transformation 'cause it was fast, but it was
- 6:38cool when it went from that to that and then that whole movie changes.
- 6:42'cause you didn't know you were watching that movie until that happens.
- 6:46Jon: Yeah.
- 6:46Kearns: So,
- 6:48Jon: Yep.
- 6:49Kearns: good deal.
- 6:49Jon: All right.
- 6:51Our third category,
- 6:52Ryan: One for one
- 6:53Jon: best horror movie,
- 6:56Ryan: head of the family?
- 6:58Jon: head of the family is nominee number one.
- 7:01Ryan: Yes.
- 7:04Kearns: Tremors too.
- 7:06Ryan: Yeah.
- 7:06Jon: tells from the Crypt, bordello of blood.
- 7:10Ryan: Okay.
- 7:10Kearns: You know what's funny?
- 7:11I remember that movie came out around the time from Dust Till Dawn came out and I
- 7:14I couldn't figure out what was going on.
- 7:16Jon: they are
- 7:17Kearns: Yeah.
- 7:17Jon: similar.
- 7:19Kearns: Prostitute vampires.
- 7:20Jon: Yep.
- 7:21Ryan: Well, yeah,
- 7:22I
- 7:22Kearns: yeah.
- 7:23Ryan: bordellos like the Louisiana swamps, if I'm not mistaken.
- 7:27And from Dust to Dawn, we have
- 7:28Kearns: When you Creole, we call it Bayou Boy.
- 7:31Ryan: sir. With Creed.
- 7:33Kearns: see.
- 7:34Jon: tremors Aftershocks,
- 7:37Ryan: Yeah.
- 7:39Kearns: That's where they're little, ah,
- 7:43Jon: and Uncle Sam.
- 7:47Ryan: I feel like it's a theme that Uncle Sam is on each one of
- 7:50these lists and we're just avoiding choosing it, which is phenomenal.
- 7:54Kearns: going for like what I enjoyed the most or anything like that.
- 7:58I'm just thinking of what makes a good B horror movie and Uncle Sam kind of
- 8:02skimps on the extra servings of that.
- 8:05Ryan: Yeah.
- 8:05Kearns: There's not as much Reliance on weird stuff.
- 8:08they've got a good story I might be thinking of Dr. Giggles too much here.
- 8:11Ryan: going with it.
- 8:12Jon: They are easy to
- 8:16Kearns: I'm trying to think if my memory is serving me correctly or if I'm just
- 8:19gonna say this and it really means Dr. Gags tremors two was, ah, this is tough.
- 8:27Tremors two is not a good choice for this either.
- 8:29I don't think.
- 8:30Ryan: you're,
- 8:31Kearns: I don't,
- 8:31Ryan: in between head of the family and bordello of blood.
- 8:35Kearns: I refuse to consider bordello blood to B horror and movie.
- 8:37So I'm, I'm really thinking about the dentist.
- 8:40I think I'm gonna go with the dentist
- 8:41Jon: like it.
- 8:41Kearns: 'cause it's so stupid,
- 8:44Ryan: but.
- 8:45you got Myron head of the family controlling all his siblings,
- 8:49the intelligent, the lustful the strong the good looking one.
- 8:53Kearns: It's like the Encanto.
- 8:55Ryan: it's just for adults.
- 8:56gotta go ahead of the family I've never seen
- 8:59Kearns: I,
- 8:59Ryan: I gotta go family.
- 9:01Kearns: I might not have either, but I'm going for it anyway.
- 9:03Ryan: the scene, and John can me if I'm wrong 'cause it might be a
- 9:07different movie, is there's definitely a drilling scene he pops the drill in the
- 9:12Kearns: Yeah,
- 9:12Ryan: mouth and just tears 'em up.
- 9:14I do remember that, yeah.
- 9:16Close.
- 9:17Kearns: that's John's,
- 9:19Jon: as the dentist.
- 9:20Ryan: Okay.
- 9:21Jon: Yeah.
- 9:22Ryan: that drill
- 9:23Kearns: you auditioned for that part?
- 9:25Ryan: a lot of dentists
- 9:26Kearns: I.
- 9:26Jon: Yeah.
- 9:27I mean,
- 9:27Ryan: of that.
- 9:27Jon: it was 96, a few years after his LA Law and Major League fame.
- 9:31that may have been all he was getting.
- 9:34Ryan: Which is fair.
- 9:35That's how it usually happens.
- 9:37look at Nick Cage.
- 9:38that man was in debt but he built himself back by doing D movies.
- 9:43Look at him now,
- 9:44Jon: they offer him,
- 9:46Ryan: amazing.
- 9:47Jon: gonna go, I'm gonna go with Uncle Sam as my best.
- 9:51Ryan: Okay.
- 9:52Kearns: What a guy.
- 9:53Ryan: with your country, sir.
- 9:54Kearns: Well, and for reasons we will probably discuss shortly.
- 9:58All right.
- 9:58Let's see what else we got.
- 9:59Jon: And our best picture
- 10:03Ryan: Okay.
- 10:03Jon: we have
- 10:06Ryan: Yeah.
- 10:07Jon: the frighteners from dusk till dawn, the craft,
- 10:15Ryan: Oh,
- 10:15Kearns: Ah,
- 10:16Jon: thinner.
- 10:18Ryan: Okay.
- 10:19Kearns: thinner.
- 10:20The book.
- 10:20Way better than thinner.
- 10:21The movie.
- 10:22It's out immediately,
- 10:23Ryan: the craft.
- 10:24Kearns: craft is what makes this screwy.
- 10:26That cat sabotaged the podcast.
- 10:28We're suing that cat.
- 10:30She went after the mic
- 10:31Ryan: that?
- 10:31Reci?
- 10:32Yeah.
- 10:33Jon: Reggie Rumble.
- 10:35Kearns: she, she changed the whole lighting set up of your room.
- 10:39Ryan: It got bright.
- 10:41Kearns: I'm gonna go with the craft.
- 10:43The craft does get a little spooky.
- 10:45It's not a horror movie though, man.
- 10:47But I'm just gonna go with it because neither is from Dust Till Dawn
- 10:50Ryan: What?
- 10:51Whoa,
- 10:51Kearns: the Nurse.
- 10:52Ryan: From dust Hold.
- 10:53Dawn is a horror film when those vampires pop out in the bar.
- 10:57Kearns: it's like an action fight movie.
- 11:00Ryan: it's,
- 11:01Kearns: It's power.
- 11:02Ryan: some thrills.
- 11:03Kearns: It's got some.
- 11:04Yeah, but that's not what horror is.
- 11:07Thrills an edge of your seat.
- 11:08Ryan: that's not who,
- 11:10Kearns: Not to me.
- 11:11Ryan: goosebumps, like when Sam Hayek is literally, her,
- 11:14Kearns: not scary
- 11:15Ryan: she
- 11:15Kearns: what?
- 11:16Her like,
- 11:16Ryan: after
- 11:17Kearns: that's not scary either.
- 11:19Ryan: makes
- 11:19Kearns: scary either.
- 11:20It's just, it, makes it difficult to mid rub out to.
- 11:27But other than that, that's the scariest part.
- 11:29Ryan: so the,
- 11:30Kearns: No,
- 11:31Ryan: never made you jump
- 11:31Kearns: there's jump scares I with the bad CGI ghosts.
- 11:35But it's not scary.
- 11:37Ryan: It's,
- 11:37Kearns: not frightening.
- 11:38it's more like Casper the friendly ghost than it horror movie.
- 11:41craft is also not scary, but it has more of a dark foreboding like vibe to it.
- 11:45I guess that goes more so throughout.
- 11:48Ryan: Okay.
- 11:48Kearns: understand you disagree with me and that's
- 11:50Ryan: no, I
- 11:51Kearns: good disagree
- 11:51Ryan: do.
- 11:52Jon: treading into my territory with gatekeeping what is and isn't horror.
- 11:57Kearns: why mid nineties movies did this a lot where they were built as like
- 12:01this is why we have the current genre bending that we do where everything
- 12:04has like 15 sub genres because of this exact mindset I have right now.
- 12:09So if we're gonna consider them all horror, still the craft,
- 12:14Jon: Okay.
- 12:15Ryan: craft is a good choice.
- 12:16Kearns: good movie to
- 12:17Ryan: And the, I don't, I don't think the sequel held up, but it
- 12:21does have a nice connection to the first film, the more recent one.
- 12:25But I have to throw a curve ball and go with Scream.
- 12:28I can't, I can't let my guy go down.
- 12:31know, Frighteners is great, craft is great from dust holds on, but scream at 96.
- 12:37It's the life of the party.
- 12:39Kearns: How come Vicki Valour didn't get best villain
- 12:42Ryan: actually that
- 12:43Kearns: for the crafts?
- 12:45Yeah.
- 12:45And if you're listeners, you better know what I'm talking about with Vicki Valour.
- 12:49Ryan: well,
- 12:49Kearns: a double reference
- 12:51Ryan: if she was on the list, I would've pushed off Johnny Bartlett and he's
- 12:55fixing it We're gonna do a recap.
- 12:57recap
- 12:59Kearns: It's all good.
- 13:00But yeah, the craft for me, scream for Ryan and John.
- 13:05Jon: I am going the frighteners.
- 13:07Ryan: Frighteners.
- 13:08That's good though.
- 13:09Kearns: Damn.
- 13:09Ryan: get
- 13:10Kearns: I love that movie though.
- 13:11It was good.
- 13:12I like Michael.
- 13:13J. Fox holds up things much better than I would love to have seen him
- 13:17in more movies around that era.
- 13:19Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 13:19Kearns: know, he's good in what he's in.
- 13:22watch Doc Hollywood and tell me you're not enthralled.
- 13:25Ryan: Hollywood's excellent.
- 13:27Kearns: Yeah.
- 13:27Like his career is just good.
- 13:28Spin City has no Right.
- 13:30Being good
- 13:31Ryan: No,
- 13:31Kearns: has no right.
- 13:32Being good.
- 13:33It's very good.
- 13:34Thank you.
- 13:35Michael J. Fox
- 13:36Ryan: Family ties is excellent,
- 13:37Kearns: Family Ties stands on its own.
- 13:40that's why I didn't bring it up.
- 13:42That's just a quality show.
- 13:44Ryan: that's his first acting role his main spotlight and he shines, led to him,
- 13:49Kearns: Didn't they bring in Leonardo DiCaprio
- 13:52Ryan: pains
- 13:53Kearns: family growing pains.
- 13:54right.
- 13:54Ryan: more popular
- 13:55Kearns: All right.
- 13:56So that's our opening game, the Zino Mania Horror Awards
- 14:01Ryan: comment.
- 14:02Kearns: came up with.
- 14:03Ryan: Please comment, subscribe, like, and comment on what your favorites are.
- 14:08We know you're listening.
- 14:09it a shot.
- 14:10Have fun.
- 14:10Jon: us.
- 14:12us with subs.
- 14:12I definitely left stuff off that could have been on here.
- 14:17Ryan: like
- 14:17Kearns: That's true.
- 14:21My toast game was 96.
- 14:22Ryan: it was 96 or 97.
- 14:24Kearns: way,
- 14:24Ryan: but,
- 14:25Kearns: we're here to.
- 14:25Ryan: sorry.
- 14:26to cut in.
- 14:26I wanted to apologize though, because I was watching our
- 14:29last video for 28 years later.
- 14:31talk about this, but it didn't, it wasn't, it didn't make it in
- 14:34the final cut for some reason.
- 14:35Ralph finds and, Alfie from the 28 years later, and and Jillian Murphy, they're all
- 14:43gonna be in the next one, the Bone Temple.
- 14:45So the last film I said Ralph Fines wasn't in it, and we did talk about it.
- 14:49It got cut out and John supplied the info.
- 14:51I wanted to.
- 14:51fix that for our listeners out there.
- 14:54And
- 14:55Kearns: Did we cut it from the episode?
- 14:56Ryan: um, well give
- 14:57Kearns: hold on.
- 14:58I don't, on just, just real quick, did it get cut from the episode?
- 15:01Ryan: even in
- 15:01Kearns: So why are you apologizing for it to the listeners?
- 15:04Ryan: it was in the episode I thought it got recorded.
- 15:07it just sounded good.
- 15:08All right.
- 15:09I was trying
- 15:10Kearns: It sure did, buddy.
- 15:11right.
- 15:12Ryan: just trying to keep views
- 15:13Kearns: Just try to live my life, bro.
- 15:16Jon: Man with
- 15:17Kearns: Oh man.
- 15:18I was just sitting there loing it, and I was like, wait a second.
- 15:21Does this three and a half minute aside belong here?
- 15:24No.
- 15:24Guess what's getting cut from this episode, everybody?
- 15:27Ryan: that, god damn it.
- 15:29Kearns: No,
- 15:30Jon: apology
- 15:31Kearns: we gotta keep it in for this.
- 15:32Yeah.
- 15:33but with this episode, guys is on 1996 horror movie, uncle Sam, which,
- 15:39we talked about seeing at all the movie rental places, that iconic VHS
- 15:46cover with the Uncle Sam pointing at you and his face is looking all funky
- 15:50Ryan: wants
- 15:50Kearns: says, I want you.
- 15:51Yeah.
- 15:52It says, I want you, and I'm dead.
- 15:54That's a good one.
- 15:55Ryan: You
- 15:55Kearns: good one.
- 15:56Ryan: one of those things where you, walk in and it's like getting
- 15:58introduced to that whole world of horror films, at my time, let's say
- 16:0396, And that was as modern as can be.
- 16:06It was the hottest rental at captain video, video source,
- 16:10and it was just selling out.
- 16:11So it gets your attention and the cover.
- 16:14Kearns: Yeah.
- 16:14Ryan: to school, first grade, kindergarten, you see Uncle Sam,
- 16:17you see I want you to join the army.
- 16:19And then you see him saying, I want you dead.
- 16:21It intrigues you as
- 16:22Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 16:24Ryan: It's like, what?
- 16:25What is this?
- 16:25Plus the back cover does have like the scene where the Uncle Sam
- 16:30Willie, which we'll talk about is peeping in the window of the girl.
- 16:34as a 6-year-old kid, you see that and you're like, all
- 16:38right, what's going on here?
- 16:39You know, but digressing from that scene, it's looks like a fun film.
- 16:44It's got like the, the cover.
- 16:45The cover was white, red, blue.
- 16:47It pops.
- 16:49It's a fun 1996 B movie, horror film.
- 16:54sum it up.
- 16:57Kearns: It is.
- 16:58And it was, uh, interesting 'cause we actually got to watch this one altogether.
- 17:01Uh, well, I mean we've all seen it, but we got to watch it again altogether.
- 17:04It was fun.
- 17:06It was goofy.
- 17:07Oh, really Good.
- 17:08Cool.
- 17:09Ryan: why I was,
- 17:09Kearns: It was goofy.
- 17:10Jon: yeah.
- 17:10I
- 17:10Ryan: Yeah.
- 17:11That's why I was like so focused reading the closed captions.
- 17:15Kearns: Oh, and I'm just sitting there doing comments, being a jackass.
- 17:18Ryan: it.
- 17:19Kearns: I'd forgotten a lot of the stuff that happens watched it in the nineties.
- 17:22I.
- 17:22Ryan: gory as I was expecting.
- 17:24I thought a little more gore, besides the opening scene where he gets caught in
- 17:29friendly fire and he's burnt to a crisp.
- 17:34that was the only gory scene, in the whole film.
- 17:38Plus the makeup was
- 17:41in, in this film a budget of okay, $2 million, very, very well done.
- 17:48Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 17:49it's another collaboration too with between Larry Cohen writing
- 17:53and William Lustig directing, and I mean, the two of them separately
- 17:59have created some magic together.
- 18:03you've got this in Maniac Cop that they've made together.
- 18:07just awesome, awesome horror.
- 18:11Ryan: You got the vibe of Larry Cohen's writing.
- 18:13I've seen Maniac Cop, like he's, he's got a good vibe.
- 18:17He's got the good like pace for it and it shows in Uncle Sam
- 18:21it's a quick pace horror film.
- 18:23It does well.
- 18:24when we talk about the ending, I feel like it does fall off a little bit
- 18:27where he does compress everything.
- 18:35Kearns: Oh,
- 18:36Ryan: Hi
- 18:36Kearns: well.
- 18:37Well, well, well, well,
- 18:41we had a sighting.
- 18:42I'm not sure if you noticed John, but there's someone in your house
- 18:44Ryan: behind you
- 18:46Jon: Yeah.
- 18:46Ryan: it
- 18:47Jon: come and
- 18:47Kearns: I,
- 18:47Jon: small kitten who is
- 18:50Ryan: Oh,
- 18:51Jon: with wires.
- 18:53Kearns: gotcha.
- 18:54Ryan: like playing with them, like,
- 18:55Jon: Yeah.
- 18:56Ryan: or biting them.
- 18:58Okay.
- 18:58Jon: Both
- 19:00Ryan: That was the
- 19:01Kearns: Amazing.
- 19:01Ryan: having
- 19:02Kearns: Amazing.
- 19:02Ryan: catching her biting on my Super Nintendo controller after
- 19:06school Have to go to Sears.
- 19:08Buy another controller.
- 19:09Your little harlett.
- 19:12I was gonna say something really nasty.
- 19:14Kearns: would you name your cat Harlett?
- 19:16Ryan: her, her name was Daisy and I called her Chichi.
- 19:19But she was a Harlet though,
- 19:20Kearns: Let her live.
- 19:21She was a progressive cat.
- 19:23Ryan: he gets shot down Our Uncle Sam gets shot down in Ley fire.
- 19:27he's burnt to his crisp and they
- 19:29Kearns: Yep.
- 19:29What country was he in when he was shot down?
- 19:33Ryan: Kuwait.
- 19:33Kearns: Don't look at the screen.
- 19:34Yeah.
- 19:35Good job.
- 19:35Yeah, it was Kuwait.
- 19:36It was Kuwait.
- 19:37It was 96.
- 19:38So it's, that was the, it was the sexy war of the time at the moment.
- 19:42Ryan: but,
- 19:42Kearns: It was in Kuwait post Desert Storm era.
- 19:45Ryan: of illustrates what the vibe is.
- 19:46'cause he starts off with, um, the line, don't be afraid.
- 19:51It's only friendly fire.
- 19:53And he blows basically the soldiers away a pistol.
- 19:57endless amount of shots, by the
- 20:00Kearns: I
- 20:00Ryan: that pistol.
- 20:02It's just clip.
- 20:05Jon: yeah,
- 20:06Kearns: think clips are pretty big.
- 20:09Yeah.
- 20:10Somewhat like 15 to 18 bullets in a sidearm and a military issue.
- 20:15Side arm.
- 20:16But the, the cool thing is, is that he shoots the guy through center mass and
- 20:21then kills the, uh, commanding officer.
- 20:24behind him, and that guy was a dick.
- 20:25So it was fun to watch him die pretty early.
- 20:27Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 20:28Kearns: he's just like, I assumed he was gonna wreak havoc where he was.
- 20:32And he doesn't, I guess they ship his body back overseas to his family who's waiting
- 20:38for him in some location in America.
- 20:42do we know where where the town is
- 20:43Jon: Rivers, USA.
- 20:45Ryan: Yep.
- 20:46Kearns: That's amazing it's, Twin Rivers.
- 20:48We skipped the state.
- 20:49just Twin Rivers.
- 20:51Jon: Yeah.
- 20:51Ryan: it
- 20:51Kearns: town.
- 20:53Jon: state is irrelevant.
- 20:55Kearns: Yep.
- 20:56Ryan: America.
- 20:57Kearns: Welcome back Sam.
- 20:59Sam gets shipped back to his widow, and her identical twin sister, which
- 21:05is what it looks like anyway, but it's not a. Girls aren't sisters together.
- 21:10There's no blood relation there.
- 21:12It's Sam's sister who looks just like his wife, which, no,
- 21:16it's, it's not Sam's sister.
- 21:18Ryan: Yes.
- 21:18Kearns: It's Sam's sister who looks just like his wife.
- 21:23Yeah.
- 21:24So we get that going.
- 21:27Jon: And his nephew,
- 21:31Kearns: Who looks like he's wearing a helmet.
- 21:32Jon: Jody.
- 21:34Ryan: is definitely a
- 21:35Kearns: Yeah.
- 21:35He is one of the more annoying kids.
- 21:38One of the more annoying kids in movies.
- 21:40it just sucks all around.
- 21:41And his haircut makes you progressively angrier as you watch it.
- 21:44Ryan: you hope you want to like the kid they try to make you like the kid and
- 21:48force it down your throat he's unbearable.
- 21:51Kearns: Yeah.
- 21:52Ryan: you think about the worst kids, in a horror film where it
- 21:56just paints in the asses and he just takes the cake because he's just
- 22:00Kearns: Yeah.
- 22:00Ryan: he's a whiny.
- 22:02My uncle Sam is a man.
- 22:04He fought in the war.
- 22:05we have chef,
- 22:07Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 22:08Ryan: in here real quick, and I'm jumping into that You can see the disrespect and
- 22:11like, he's just like, he, you're trying to like, they want you to sympathize with
- 22:16him and you can't, that was like the one thing I feel like, the writer Larry did
- 22:21like, like missed on that Larry Cohen was, there's no sympathy for this kid.
- 22:25You kind of feel bad for the mom, maybe the aunt, but the kid
- 22:30you want Uncle Sam to rack him.
- 22:32Jon: I, well, yeah, I don't, I don't think you're supposed to
- 22:36feel particularly sympathetic for chode through most of the movie.
- 22:41I think you're, you know,
- 22:44he's gung ho, rambunctious little turd.
- 22:51Kearns: Yeah, I'm almost thinking that's his purpose too.
- 22:54I don't think he's meant to be likable, especially with how the
- 22:56movie ends but he's kind of a shit throughout the entire thing.
- 22:59Ryan: Well,
- 22:59Kearns: and it does things that, the viewer's gonna get annoyed at,
- 23:01like fondling the casket, not fully opening it, and things like that,
- 23:06Ryan: Not
- 23:07Kearns: just can't stand him.
- 23:08Ryan: how to open the casket.
- 23:10I don't know how to open this casket.
- 23:11Just turn the latch, buddy.
- 23:13You just turn the damn latch.
- 23:15You know how to put a purple heart on you.
- 23:17You know how to let me stop.
- 23:20A probably needs a lot of help and I'm like really shitting on it.
- 23:25Sorry.
- 23:28Jon: well, I mean,
- 23:29Kearns: Are you okay?
- 23:30Jon: He seems to need a lot of help because he's in school
- 23:34during the 4th of July week.
- 23:37Ryan: Yeah, he is.
- 23:38Kearns: Oh, that's a good point.
- 23:39Jon: e
- 23:40Kearns: messed up
- 23:40Jon: a real academic achiever or they have a really weird school calendar.
- 23:45Ryan: was weird.
- 23:46to put school in July 1st.
- 23:48even if it's summer school setting or a camp setting, you're not sitting
- 23:53in a classroom ready for class with a bell ringing in the background.
- 23:56Jon: No, it,
- 23:57Kearns: No.
- 23:58Jon: ridiculous for a school to be in session on July 1st.
- 24:02Ryan: Yeah.
- 24:03Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 24:04Ryan: Which
- 24:04Kearns: Agreed.
- 24:05Ryan: the days are quick one minute you're July 1st, then next you're July 4th.
- 24:10Kearns: Yeah.
- 24:11Ryan: very,
- 24:11Kearns: the movie's very thin, very thin.
- 24:15Ryan: yeah.
- 24:15Kearns: They, get into it and establish, weird relationships between
- 24:20Jodi's mother and his, aunts and their relationships with these men.
- 24:25And John pointed out, I have to bring this up, that they all, everybody looks alike.
- 24:28Ryan: do.
- 24:29Kearns: the two main females look alike.
- 24:31And there's three men in the movie look identical as well.
- 24:34They're just like all the same archetype.
- 24:37Yeah.
- 24:37The teacher, the sheriff, and
- 24:39Ryan: the
- 24:39Kearns: the,
- 24:40Jon: the police
- 24:40Kearns: the tradesman as lawyer.
- 24:42Jon: They're the same
- 24:43Kearns: Yeah.
- 24:45It's weird.
- 24:46Ryan: They didn't
- 24:47Kearns: So you're watching it and you're like, it's all
- 24:49kind of bleeding together bit
- 24:50And it's also just like it is Uncle Sam and not getting this amazing script.
- 24:55So the movie tracks on a bit and you get yourself to a point where they
- 25:00introduce, I believe Isaac Hayes comes in.
- 25:03we're skipping over the commander who's trying to dittle the widow,
- 25:06there's a commander who brought the casket and everything.
- 25:09He's trying to dittle the widow and his whole shtick
- 25:11Jon: the officer, who notifies the next of kin that their family member
- 25:19has died in war, is also just trying to get in women's pants the whole
- 25:26Ryan: Yeah.
- 25:27Kearns: is getting after those sad, grieving widows and he's just lame.
- 25:32And then we get but the big surprise of the movies that Isaac Hayes is in it,
- 25:36Ryan: children.
- 25:36Kearns: is awesome.
- 25:39He's a war veteran who is a Purple Heart recipient as well.
- 25:43Shout out to all of our heroes out there.
- 25:45And, uh, he's got a wooden leg, which they do some really like
- 25:49silly camera tricks to make work.
- 25:52And yeah,
- 25:53Ryan: about the
- 25:54Kearns: Isaac Jesus walking
- 25:55Ryan: he knocks on the lake?
- 25:57Kearns: when he's sitting and you can see that he's like right side of
- 26:00his body's higher 'cause he is got sitting in his legs under his ass
- 26:04and, and they have the wooden leg in the front, but stuff like that.
- 26:07So Isaac Hayes is in it as well.
- 26:09And he ends up, uh, well he was, he used to serve with sand
- 26:14Ryan: Yes.
- 26:14Kearns: and train.
- 26:15Ryan: mentored him.
- 26:16Jon: Sam's mentor.
- 26:18Kearns: And just like the movie guys, it's 32 minutes into the podcast, just
- 26:21like the movie or just like us right now, having not gotten into anything
- 26:25really fun or horror related with regard to this movie movie doesn't either.
- 26:31Except for that opening scene until we get well into it and
- 26:35somebody finally does something to conjure a Sam outta that coffin.
- 26:40What happens?
- 26:40John,
- 26:41Jon: Oh, we get some, young teenage punks, desecrating graves and burning flags,
- 26:49Ryan: Yep.
- 26:49Jon: some embers wind up in Sam's grave and that awakens an angry Sam.
- 26:58Ryan: did like that shot.
- 26:59not I didn't like them burning the flag, but for story purposes, how the flag
- 27:04is burning and it looks like fireworks shooting off as it's falling in the
- 27:07Kearns: you've
- 27:07Ryan: really
- 27:08Kearns: you've gone too far You're a traitor.
- 27:12Ryan: accept
- 27:12Kearns: You've said it already.
- 27:13I have to roll that one back.
- 27:16Ryan: We'll accept it.
- 27:17Kearns: But it's not like they did in creep show when you
- 27:21had the wooden Indian who,
- 27:22who, gets revenge for his owner kills the people.
- 27:26Who specifically wronged the owner.
- 27:31Do you guys remember that at think that's creep show.
- 27:33Ryan: too.
- 27:34Kearns: Sam comes out and starts killing people and it's indiscriminate almost.
- 27:38He does go after the guys who did derate the grave, but he's not a good vengeful.
- 27:44Ryan: Yeah.
- 27:44Kearns: he's a dick and apparently he was also a dick in life.
- 27:47Ryan: loved to kill.
- 27:48Jon: he.
- 27:48Yes, that's, that comes up out later in the movie, as does how awful a human
- 27:54being Sam was in life and afterlife is a continuation of his hideous humanity.
- 28:02Ryan: And.
- 28:03There is signs of him messing, like, I wouldn't say messing, but he, he
- 28:07caused some I guess, for his sister to have some PTSD, definitely his wife.
- 28:13just like that controlling, hatred that comes out.
- 28:18And Isaac Hay's character does try to help him, and he notices
- 28:23something wrong when they go hunting.
- 28:25he went hunting with him and carved out that animal.
- 28:28It was like he was a killer.
- 28:30what if he sent him to war, not to get him off that killing spree, but to have him
- 28:34killed himself, like to rid of that evil.
- 28:37if he dies out there, he dies out there.
- 28:39Kearns: Who sent him
- 28:39Ryan: with Isaac Hay's character mentoring him, eventually mentors
- 28:43Sam's character to going to the Army.
- 28:46So maybe that was his way of self-sacrifice.
- 28:49He's like, I'm not gonna kill the guy here.
- 28:51He's like my student, he goes out, he dies.
- 28:54But being a killing machine, of course he's surviving everything.
- 28:57that sacrifice of this evil entity, like I can't get rid of it, but war can.
- 29:03Jon: Jed didn't necessarily encourage Sam to join the military.
- 29:08He was telling him stories and in Jed's mind they were more
- 29:12cautionary incitement to go to war.
- 29:17Ryan: Yeah.
- 29:18Well, he's going around, walking at the festival.
- 29:21checking things out, and he meets a blind kid,
- 29:24Kearns: Meets a blind kid.
- 29:25Ryan: I'm skipping his name this poor blind kid.
- 29:27it's really weird how they set it up with his accident, it's very
- 29:32questionable how his accident happens.
- 29:35There's like two stories
- 29:37Kearns: Well,
- 29:38Ryan: on that
- 29:38Kearns: He meets the blind kid at the actual
- 29:41Ryan: Yep.
- 29:41Kearns: July celebration.
- 29:42Ryan: Yes.
- 29:43Kearns: we're jumping past a bit of Sam debauchery, aren't we?
- 29:47No, I guess not really.
- 29:48He just does the same thing, his murder spree stuff,
- 29:50Ryan: I mean, if you wanna
- 29:51Kearns: how he gets the costume.
- 29:53Ryan: the grave site let's, take it back to the grave site
- 29:55Kearns: So he he goes on his killing spree and I mentioned earlier that he, he isn't,
- 30:00you know, righteous and who is killing.
- 30:02We thought they make it seem as though he is just gonna kill the people
- 30:04who are desecrating the grave site.
- 30:06Ryan: Yeah.
- 30:07Kearns: he does not.
- 30:07He kills many other people, including,
- 30:11Willie?
- 30:12Willie the guy who wearing the Uncle Sam outfit on the stilts
- 30:16Ryan: Poor Willie
- 30:16Jon: stilts.
- 30:18Kearns: Willie on stilts catches a bed, falls down, and gets got by Sam.
- 30:24I think that's one of the first times Sam speaks too, doesn't he?
- 30:29Ryan: Oh no,
- 30:29Kearns: After the beginning,
- 30:30Ryan: okay.
- 30:30Yes.
- 30:31Kearns: right?
- 30:32He kills him and then he steals his Uncle Sam outfit.
- 30:37Ryan: Mask was creepy.
- 30:40Kearns: The mask was creepy.
- 30:41Ryan: And how he cuts the costume.
- 30:43He can, you know, repo eats it.
- 30:46the blood soaked on it stands out for $2 million.
- 30:51Budget film.
- 30:51It stands out.
- 30:52so good old Willie, he's
- 30:56got stilts on.
- 30:57He's walking around town pops into a window and he gets a little sight, man.
- 31:04Fireworks display a day early.
- 31:06Jon: Yeah.
- 31:07Oh, Willie runs into Sam, and Sam takes him out with hedge trimmers
- 31:12and then goes after the cemetery.
- 31:15Punks,
- 31:15Kearns: And he pops out.
- 31:17And let's see, what does he do after that?
- 31:21As soon as he gets the costume, we do kind of roll right into
- 31:23the festivities, don't we?
- 31:26Ryan: 'cause he's like
- 31:26Kearns: there's some stuff in between.
- 31:27Jon: just,
- 31:28Ryan: merge into it.
- 31:29Jon: into it.
- 31:30Ryan: He's giving high fives to everyone.
- 31:33No licking, hatchets.
- 31:36It's all right.
- 31:38Jon: licking hatchets,
- 31:41Ryan: Licking hatchets with his grotesque, like
- 31:44Jon: like
- 31:45Ryan: purplish tongue
- 31:47Jon: He's also managed to steal his metals back from chode,
- 31:52Ryan: Yep.
- 31:52Kearns: Yes, that's right.
- 31:53And he puts them on.
- 31:55Jon: pin to his clothing.
- 31:56He pins them directly to his charred chest.
- 32:01Kearns: Yeah, it's pretty cool.
- 32:02That was a fun scene.
- 32:03But yeah, the, the gore and the killings isn't excessive at all.
- 32:08It's, it's all kind of very.
- 32:10Left to your imagination almost.
- 32:12Um, which makes it an interesting movie for the era because there were
- 32:15very gory, horror movies at the time.
- 32:18Ryan: Yep.
- 32:19Kearns: not this one
- 32:19Jon: No.
- 32:20Kearns: And I then kind of makes me wonder what they were like
- 32:22hinging the success of this film on.
- 32:26'cause there's nothing too overt.
- 32:28It was it like the great storyline
- 32:29Jon: No,
- 32:32it was that visual of Uncle Sam.
- 32:37Ryan: Yep.
- 32:38Jon: Uncle Sam as a killer
- 32:40Kearns: story?
- 32:41I mean, that does kind of work, but we get
- 32:44Jon: the
- 32:45Kearns: the festivities is it even known that Sam's out killing yet?
- 32:49Jon: No,
- 32:49Ryan: No.
- 32:50Kearns: not yet.
- 32:51Jon: yet.
- 32:52Kearns: Okay.
- 32:52Jon: until pretty well into Carnival.
- 32:55it's billed as a parade.
- 32:56That's really brief.
- 32:59then it's just like a town Independence Day celebration.
- 33:02Ryan: Yep.
- 33:03Kearns: yeah, that's what you get.
- 33:03And that's where the blind kid that Brian brought up earlier is rolled out
- 33:08and he's, he's the victim of a firework.
- 33:11Accident's gone wrong.
- 33:12Sam approaches that kid at some point.
- 33:15it's Jody's friend.
- 33:16He approaches that kid and
- 33:18Jon: guess
- 33:18Kearns: I guess he was getting bullied and he is like, I'll kill them all for you.
- 33:21And then
- 33:22the blind kids' are like, yes, please do.
- 33:23Ryan: how he grabs his face
- 33:24Jon: though.
- 33:26Kearns: It's
- 33:26weird.
- 33:26Ryan: splat.
- 33:27he's like,
- 33:28Jon: like,
- 33:29Ryan: I understand your pain.
- 33:30no man, what are you doing?
- 33:31no one else notices
- 33:33Kearns: It's weird.
- 33:34Yeah, it's also funny.
- 33:36Ryan: like
- 33:36Kearns: and he goes around to celebration, killing people.
- 33:38Jon: Yeah.
- 33:39it starts as killing people who in Sam's view, disrespected the country.
- 33:46Kearns: Yeah,
- 33:47Jon: Mr. Crandall, the teacher for being a coward and not enlisting during Vietnam,
- 33:55Kearns: Alex's right.
- 33:56I forgot that
- 33:57Ryan: goes to Canada.
- 33:59Jon: He takes out, one of the kids from the cemetery Jesse who the national anthem
- 34:06Ryan: Yep.
- 34:08During the SAC race,
- 34:09Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 34:11Ryan: him.
- 34:11Jon: longest sac race in history was
- 34:14Kearns: glad you brought that up.
- 34:15Jon: country sack race.
- 34:17Kearns: They're in the woods.
- 34:18off the beaten path and It's bizarre.
- 34:20They're jumping over tree branches and anybody who's done a sack race knows
- 34:24Ryan: of
- 34:24Kearns: that going 50 feet is impossible.
- 34:28the kid who ends up dying
- 34:29Jon: if your sac race is more than 50 feet, your sac race is too long.
- 34:35Kearns: mm-hmm.
- 34:36Agreed.
- 34:37I don't even think they do it anymore.
- 34:38Now they do that weird two person wheelbarrow thing
- 34:41Ryan: I
- 34:41Kearns: where you gotta like run on your hands.
- 34:44Jon: I prefer the leg tied together.
- 34:46So it's the three-legged run
- 34:47Ryan: Ooh,
- 34:48Kearns: Oh, that's a good one too.
- 34:49We used to do that with Fox Lane.
- 34:51Ryan: The
- 34:51Kearns: I doxed this,
- 34:52Jon: that always
- 34:53Kearns: cutting that up.
- 34:54Jon: plants.
- 34:56Kearns: People get hurt.
- 34:57Ryan: race.
- 34:57Jon: three-legged race.
- 34:59Ryan: Oh,
- 34:59Jon: a good fall
- 35:00Kearns: Bye.
- 35:02as the shenanigans ensue, a congressman shows up.
- 35:05For Congressman things.
- 35:08Jon: Played,
- 35:09Kearns: And
- 35:09Jon: Forster.
- 35:11Kearns: it was another name,
- 35:12Ryan: Yep.
- 35:13Kearns: not as exciting as Isaac Hay, but another bigger name.
- 35:15And recognize him?
- 35:16Ryan: about this Isaac case is forever with us as chef,
- 35:21Jon: chef.
- 35:22Ryan: more love for Isaac case.
- 35:23Jon: case.
- 35:25Kearns: Yeah,
- 35:26Ryan: But,
- 35:26Kearns: true.
- 35:27Ryan: is an actor.
- 35:28Jon: actor.
- 35:29Ryan: it pops up Jackie Brown.
- 35:31Jon: Brown.
- 35:32Mm-hmm.
- 35:32Ryan: just, he's, I mean, that's really, that pops up to me.
- 35:35That stands out,
- 35:36Jon: out,
- 35:37Ryan: during that time.
- 35:38Jon: that time
- 35:39Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 35:40Ryan: he did Jackie Brown in 95,
- 35:41Jon: Yeah.
- 35:42Ryan: then did Uncle Sam later?
- 35:43Jon: follow up.
- 35:45Ryan: Yes.
- 35:45Kearns: bizarre.
- 35:46Ryan: Phenomenal.
- 35:47Jon: Jackie Brown fame.
- 35:50Kearns: he's like, I gotta load up as much money as I can before Bitcoin comes out.
- 35:53Jon: was a thing like, and granted Larry Cohen didn't direct this,
- 35:58but there was a thing a lot of actors wanted to work with him.
- 36:04Kearns: Yeah.
- 36:05Jon: as a director, there are a lot of names who shouldn't have been in some
- 36:09of the bad movies he made, he always got great performances out of them.
- 36:15Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 36:16Ryan: Was it because he's just a friendly guy or because of
- 36:20Jon: because
- 36:20Ryan: writing?
- 36:21Jon: I think he's a friendly, likable guy people wanted to excel for them and
- 36:25like, he's a, he's an actor's director.
- 36:29Ryan: Okay.
- 36:30Jon: demanding on you.
- 36:32Ryan: Because I mean, he does try the, his, I guess you can
- 36:35say his formula for, maniac Cop,
- 36:37Jon: Cop,
- 36:38Ryan: which works out greatly.
- 36:40good pacing with Uncle Sam.
- 36:42He tries to do that and it shows a lot with the dialogue, just how
- 36:46Jon: how
- 36:47Ryan: the kills are performed.
- 36:50Jon: But
- 36:50Ryan: can't
- 36:51Jon: can't
- 36:51Ryan: stretch it out It's very compressed.
- 36:55Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 36:55Ryan: that does show, especially talking about the deaths now that these are shown.
- 36:59Jon: shown,
- 37:01Ryan: Um, maybe with the, when he lifts the kid up,
- 37:05Jon: up,
- 37:05Ryan: the flag.
- 37:07Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 37:07Ryan: the hedge clipper machine is, shown off camera.
- 37:10Kearns: The commander, officer off camera.
- 37:13Jon: most of the violence is implied.
- 37:16Kearns: Yeah.
- 37:16Which is an interesting way to go.
- 37:17with a movie like this What's keeping us glued to it?
- 37:21maybe they thought the two blonde females were gonna be enough
- 37:23Ryan: It
- 37:24Kearns: carry people through.
- 37:25Jon: it wasn't.
- 37:26Kearns: It wasn't.
- 37:27Jon: So
- 37:28Kearns: this festive, 4th of July party's going on.
- 37:31He's killing multiple people until he gets, outed.
- 37:33sheriff, finds one of the bodies.
- 37:36the way he tells people when he found the body is kind of silly too, isn't it?
- 37:40But doesn't he like walk up to her and he is like, there's been a murder.
- 37:43We found a head.
- 37:44Jon: a
- 37:44Kearns: then they cut,
- 37:45Jon: a body.
- 37:45Kearns: they cut to the scene.
- 37:47found a body.
- 37:48Ryan: a head.
- 37:48Kearns: cut to a scene of the barbecue and show a severed head stoner girl making
- 37:53food, is immediately murdered afterward.
- 37:56makes me wonder, is it that head or another head they were talking about?
- 38:00Ryan: did not deserve that.
- 38:03She didn't even like that joint.
- 38:04Jon: She's
- 38:05Ryan: didn't break rule.
- 38:06Jon: she's where Sam goes from remotely justified to murderer.
- 38:12He attaches Cong, the congressman played by Robert Forster to the
- 38:18fireworks rig and sets him off.
- 38:22Kearns: if they were going for political commentary with it,
- 38:25which would be kind of funny.
- 38:26Um, I mean it's, I can't imagine what he would've done today
- 38:31Jon: Yeah.
- 38:31Kearns: because it's gotten a little different.
- 38:34Jon: Yeah.
- 38:35Kearns: yeah, they're going and it comes down to, them needing
- 38:38to find a way to kill Sam.
- 38:39Isaac Hayes.
- 38:40Jody is teamed up with him,
- 38:43Ryan: Jody and
- 38:43Kearns: mother,
- 38:44Ryan: Barry,
- 38:44Jon: Barry,
- 38:46Kearns: Barry,
- 38:46Ryan: boy.
- 38:47Kearns: blind boy turned on 'em, I And then they try to
- 38:49figure out a way to kill him,
- 38:50Ryan: he has a mental link to him.
- 38:53Jon: just, just to back a second, uh, Barry's mom is played
- 38:57by PJ Souls, another legend.
- 39:04Kearns: she doesn't get a huge amount of limelight in this.
- 39:07Ryan: No.
- 39:07Kearns: She's just a jerk.
- 39:09She's an annoying mom.
- 39:11Jon: annoying mom.
- 39:13Kearns: what were you saying, Ryan,
- 39:15Ryan: I was saying Barry
- 39:16Jon: Barry
- 39:16Ryan: a, mental link
- 39:17Jon: link
- 39:18Ryan: with Sam,
- 39:19Jon: say
- 39:20Ryan: like,
- 39:21Jon: like,
- 39:22Ryan: always
- 39:22Kearns: after he molested his
- 39:23Ryan: after he, Melissa, his cheek, he's got something telepathic
- 39:27with him, something like, five.
- 39:30Kearns: That must have been the three times I went to the bathroom
- 39:32in 20 minutes at the end of the movie
- 39:34Ryan: Oh yeah,
- 39:35Kearns: when that was established.
- 39:36Ryan: after
- 39:37Kearns: they don't on it too heavily.
- 39:40That must have just been to fill a pothole to figure out where Sam is or something.
- 39:43Right.
- 39:44Ryan: He noses.
- 39:45Kearns: Basically.
- 39:47Jon: So,
- 39:48Kearns: with them for that.
- 39:49Jon: out the mayor, he takes out lawyer boyfriend, he takes
- 39:53out the deputy boyfriend.
- 39:56Ryan: the lawyer's death was hilarious because he's dressed like Lincoln.
- 40:01And gets shot in the head just like Lincoln,
- 40:05Kearns: Oh, that's raw.
- 40:06Yeah.
- 40:06That's right.
- 40:07That's good stuff.
- 40:09Ryan: nice nod
- 40:10Jon: he's the, I mean, at that point the lawyers, establish him as a
- 40:16little sleazy, he says some things critical of US foreign policy.
- 40:22Ryan: Yep.
- 40:22Jon: did nothing
- 40:25Ryan: No.
- 40:28Jon: have a thing for Sam's widow.
- 40:31Ryan: Mm-hmm.
- 40:31Kearns: Which might be enough for a psychopathic corpse,
- 40:34Ryan: Yes.
- 40:34Kearns: they get to the final, confrontation.
- 40:37There's a battle Isaac Hayes tries his best and gets pitched through
- 40:41a window, it doesn't matter what his character name is, by the way.
- 40:43He's Isaac Hay
- 40:44Jon: Yeah.
- 40:45Kearns: movie.
- 40:46Ryan: Hey,
- 40:46Kearns: They throw him through the window.
- 40:47I somebody else described the last fight.
- 40:49It's so unremarkable.
- 40:50Ryan: Oh,
- 40:51Kearns: how do they kill 'em?
- 40:51Jon: well,
- 40:52Ryan: got Jody who distracts him, right?
- 40:55Jon: He
- 40:55Ryan: He's like, I'm gonna be with you.
- 40:57I'm gonna become you.
- 40:58Jon: you
- 40:59Ryan: And
- 41:00Jon: and
- 41:00Ryan: Hays magically drives to town in like five seconds.
- 41:08Hitches that cannon and drives back to the house.
- 41:12Jon: Well,
- 41:12Ryan: first off, that's a 25 minute distance.
- 41:14Jon: I don't know, they sort of establish it as not that long a distance because
- 41:18they get to the house originally walking with a kid, guy with one
- 41:24leg and another kid in a wheelchair.
- 41:26They get there quick.
- 41:28So it's not a huge distance to cover
- 41:31Kearns: It's a differently abled Independence day, march to the house.
- 41:36Alright, so that makes sense.
- 41:37How do they kill 'em?
- 41:38Let's just cut to the chase.
- 41:40Ryan: Canon.
- 41:40Kearns: How do they kill someone?
- 41:42And that's my favorite part of And he misses.
- 41:45Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 41:45Kearns: And also Sam's on fire because the house is on fire.
- 41:49So he comes out and he's walking down Isaac Hayes actually.
- 41:53Is he walking down Isaac Hayes or is he walking down Jody and Isaac
- 41:58Hayes is like pumping the thing full of black powder, pushing it down.
- 42:01Like it's taking a hot second for him to reload it.
- 42:04And then he shoots Sam That's,
- 42:06Jon: Yeah.
- 42:06Kearns: all that good suspense building.
- 42:08Good stuff, right?
- 42:09Ryan: Yep.
- 42:09Kearns: But John, how cool is it when he flies backwards after
- 42:12getting shot with a cannonball?
- 42:14Jon: awesome.
- 42:15you just
- 42:15Kearns: makes the movie worth watching.
- 42:17Jon: the chest explode.
- 42:20Kearns: Good stuff.
- 42:21And you're in the middle of eating your popcorn, or your late night hohos,
- 42:24or whatever it is in 1996, and you're like, ah, because you're a stupid kid.
- 42:29You got this from Blockbuster.
- 42:32Woo.
- 42:32And that's Uncle Sam.
- 42:33There's not much more to talk about, but I'm sure somebody else has something.
- 42:36Jon: with Jodi burning all his war toys, which
- 42:39Ryan: Yep.
- 42:40Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 42:41Jon: it's Jodi coming around being normal then ends with a shot of creepy Jodi.
- 42:51Kearns: Along creepy Joe.
- 42:51they left on Jody
- 42:53Ryan: very
- 42:54Kearns: last shot
- 42:56Ryan: like type with Jamie at the end of the fourth one
- 42:59Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 43:00Ryan: instead of having the scissors and,
- 43:02Jon: and
- 43:02Ryan: showing
- 43:03Jon: that
- 43:04Ryan: She became Michael, with the eyes.
- 43:07it was the best acting from him, the whole movie.
- 43:09Jon: movie because
- 43:11Ryan: I just,
- 43:12Jon: acting
- 43:13Kearns: still.
- 43:13Yeah, exactly.
- 43:14Ryan: he was
- 43:15Kearns: It's just a creep.
- 43:16All right guys.
- 43:17That's Uncle Sam, 1996.
- 43:19We're gonna get into our top five.
- 43:21Ryan, you ready?
- 43:23Ryan: Yes.
- 43:23I am
- 43:24Jon: am
- 43:24Ryan: be sweet and quick with it,
- 43:26Jon: with it,
- 43:28Ryan: or quick and sweet, whichever the way it goes.
- 43:30Jon: Short and
- 43:30Ryan: But
- 43:31Jon: but
- 43:31Ryan: short and sweet,
- 43:32Jon: sweet.
- 43:33Ryan: and sweet.
- 43:33Jon: sweet.
- 43:34Ryan: Any sweet.
- 43:35I went with top five B movie horror films from the nineties.
- 43:43Kearns: That's a tough, that's a tough
- 43:44Ryan: this is
- 43:45Kearns: one.
- 43:45Jon: my opinion.
- 43:47Ryan: I went through the memory bank on this, and I'm gonna start with a little
- 43:53treasure called Pinocchios Revenge.
- 43:57Jon: Revenge.
- 43:58That's
- 43:59Kearns: That's a good choice.
- 44:00Ryan: basically follows a lawyer who brings home a wooden
- 44:03puppet found buried with a boy
- 44:05Jon: boy
- 44:06Ryan: supposedly killed by his father, and he decides to bring
- 44:08it to his 8-year-old daughter Zoe.
- 44:10And, um, accidents start happening and
- 44:13Jon: and
- 44:15Ryan: all hell breaks loose.
- 44:16And they say this is closer to do Matini's original intent for a child's play,
- 44:23Jon: play.
- 44:24Kearns: Okay, cool.
- 44:25Jon: cool.
- 44:26it was almost a nominee.
- 44:28like number six out of five,
- 44:30Ryan: it's creepy.
- 44:31It's a creepy film.
- 44:32I don't know the wood splinters but
- 44:36Jon: but
- 44:37Ryan: my number four though.
- 44:38I gotta go with Jack Frost, not the Michael Kean one
- 44:41Jon: one.
- 44:42never.
- 44:42The
- 44:42Ryan: about the horror
- 44:43Kearns: this is like the greatest hits of those blockbuster movie
- 44:46covers I was talking about.
- 44:47that's another iconic one.
- 44:48Ryan: Oh, Jack Frost is such a good Bud Me Bee movie.
- 44:52Jon: a vinegar syndrome release of Jack Frost with a lenticular cover.
- 44:57Ryan: Okay.
- 44:57Jon: you move it and it goes from regular snowman face to evil snowman face.
- 45:01Kearns: Yeah.
- 45:03Ryan: my Uncle Sal had the original TVD and it had that on there.
- 45:08so
- 45:09Jon: So
- 45:09Ryan: number three
- 45:10Jon: Phil
- 45:12Ryan: Is, uh,
- 45:12Jon: uh,
- 45:13Ryan: a puppet master human experiment?
- 45:17Kearns: that's not number one.
- 45:18Ryan: Oh, no.
- 45:19I got a better choice for number one,
- 45:20Jon: number one,
- 45:22Kearns: Okay.
- 45:22Ryan: it starts George Peck as Dr. May Group
- 45:27Jon: group
- 45:28Ryan: who experiments with transforming humans into puppets, and he kinda
- 45:35uses the puppets as to his own gain.
- 45:38Jon: game.
- 45:39Ryan: question on where it is in the continuity.
- 45:42Jon: I.
- 45:44Ryan: I think it's after the fifth one, but
- 45:46they say it's before the first one.
- 45:48There's a lot of questioning on that,
- 45:52Jon: on that,
- 45:53Ryan: but it does have a cool scene where one of the victims has like the mechanisms
- 46:00Jon: in
- 46:00Ryan: they become the puppet,
- 46:01Jon: the puppet,
- 46:03Ryan: pretty cool.
- 46:03Uh, number two,
- 46:04Jon: two, uh, of family.
- 46:08Kearns: Ah, there you go.
- 46:09Jon: Nice.
- 46:09Ryan: That's why I popped for that earlier.
- 46:12Jon: it's
- 46:13Ryan: just a fun horror film
- 46:14Jon: and
- 46:16Ryan: I know Kern has to use the bathroom, so I'm going with it.
- 46:18The number one,
- 46:18Jon: one.
- 46:20Ryan: wish master
- 46:21Jon: master.
- 46:22Ryan: we have talked about Wish Master.
- 46:25So
- 46:26Jon: So
- 46:27Ryan: that's it,
- 46:27Jon: it,
- 46:28Ryan: All right,
- 46:28Kearns: Nice.
- 46:29Wish.
- 46:29Master is a good one, is a good number one.
- 46:32Ryan: Yeah.
- 46:32Wish I love wish Master.
- 46:34Jon: Wish Master's a good one.
- 46:35All right.
- 46:37I went top five Larry Cohen movies.
- 46:41Ryan: I
- 46:42Kearns: cool.
- 46:42Ryan: I haven't seen that much.
- 46:43Jon: his first writing credit is from a TV show in 1958.
- 46:49He wrote Westerns, police dramas, an
- 46:54Ryan: Okay.
- 46:54Kearns: Yeah, that's what, that's what sold back then.
- 46:58Jon: He wrote an episode of The Fugitive, then moved into movies.
- 47:01Two of his first three movies are Blaxploitation.
- 47:04hell Up in Harlem and Black Caesar or him.
- 47:09Okay.
- 47:10So like really versatile in what he could do.
- 47:14I stuck to mostly his, horror in my list, but.
- 47:19So my number five is the little called It's alive.
- 47:26Kearns: cool.
- 47:27Jon: So
- 47:28Kearns: Yeah.
- 47:28Jon: are expecting a child, but when it's born, it's apparent
- 47:31this is no ordinary baby.
- 47:35Their child kills when it's scared and it scares easily.
- 47:39This is not only written but directed by Larry Cohen.
- 47:42So I'll move to number
- 47:45which is Q the Winged Serpent.
- 47:50Kearns: I
- 47:50Jon: Never
- 47:51Kearns: heard of this
- 47:51Ryan: heard of that either.
- 47:52Jon: didn't hear that either.
- 47:53cue the Wing Serpent is essentially Larry Cohen's Kaiju movie.
- 47:59New York
- 48:00Kearns: like
- 48:00Jon: flooded with calls of a giant flying lizard that they obviously
- 48:04treat as a hoax until the the lizard starts snatching people off the street.
- 48:11the hunt is on to find where the creature is nesting.
- 48:16it turns out there's only one person in the whole city who knows where he is,
- 48:20and it's an excon named Jimmy Quinn.
- 48:23And he's in no rush to give up the information he wants, benefits from it.

- 49:02as Detective Peter Nicholas investigates deeper and deeper, he starts to find a
- 49:07link to Christ-like man named Bernard Phillips, appeared to each of the killers.
