- 0:00Speaker 1: Coming up on this week's episode of hip Hop Now podcast,
- 0:05Speaker 1: Eminem beats Kendrick at the American Music Awards, snub Joey
- 0:13Speaker 1: v everybody? Or did he win? And what's in my
- 0:20Speaker 1: hip hop music rotation right now? A little bit of new,
- 0:25Speaker 1: a little bit of old. Let's do it. Welcome to
- 0:32Speaker 1: hip Hop Now, Potts. If you come the future, you
- 0:37Speaker 1: know what to do. Show as out of life, so
- 0:43Speaker 1: disrespect the leg hip hop is say this today. Let's
- 0:49Speaker 1: get right into the business. What up, y'all? I am
- 0:52Speaker 1: your host Vegas and this is hip Hop Now podcasting
- 0:55Speaker 1: podcast specifically designed to keep you caught up on all
- 0:59Speaker 1: things hip hop music and culture that happened throughout the week.
- 1:03Speaker 1: Big shout out to the subscribers in audio form on
- 1:08Speaker 1: Apple Podcasts, Spotify, third party apps like Pockecast, which is
- 1:14Speaker 1: my preferred podcast listening tool app, whatever as you will,
- 1:20Speaker 1: whatever you know. Big shout out to those who've been
- 1:24Speaker 1: listening to audio form, because audio is where the podcast started.
- 1:29Speaker 1: It was a hobby, so to speak, something I liked doing,
- 1:35Speaker 1: and it got some traction, and you know, I kept
- 1:37Speaker 1: doing it until I got to the point where I
- 1:40Speaker 1: was feeling like, yeah, maybe it's time to end fifty
- 1:44Speaker 1: years in hip hop was upon us and I was like,
- 1:46Speaker 1: how can I end on the fiftieth year of hip
- 1:49Speaker 1: hop when I've been doing this podcast for so long? Right?
- 1:53Speaker 1: So I was like, you know what, I'm going to
- 1:55Speaker 1: keep it going for a little bit longer and see
- 1:57Speaker 1: what happens. But let me bring a feature that some
- 2:01Speaker 1: people had asked me a long time ago to do,
- 2:04Speaker 1: which is video podcast. So now you have hip Hop
- 2:07Speaker 1: Now Podcast on YouTube if you're listening in audio form
- 2:11Speaker 1: the linkers in description of this episode, big shout out
- 2:15Speaker 1: to the supporters over at YouTube because we are now
- 2:21Speaker 1: not at ten thousand subscribers, for twelve thousand subscribers right
- 2:26Speaker 1: here on YouTube. I applaud everybody who came through, especially
- 2:31Speaker 1: those who are new to the channel, because I got
- 2:35Speaker 1: the stats on the new subscribers is crazy. But a
- 2:38Speaker 1: lot of it has to do with people, like in
- 2:42Speaker 1: the flow of shorts that I post, and essentially I'm
- 2:46Speaker 1: not always creating shorts. No shorts are really original when
- 2:51Speaker 1: you're talking about taking videos and you know, putting your
- 2:54Speaker 1: brand in over and stuff like that. But what I
- 2:56Speaker 1: do is I don't block out your branding. I just
- 3:00Speaker 1: stuff related to hip hop that I find dope or
- 3:03Speaker 1: funny or interesting, and apparently you do too, so big
- 3:08Speaker 1: shout out to them. One video in particular, one short.
- 3:11Speaker 1: I'm not even here, I'm not even flexing. It's just natural, right.
- 3:17Speaker 1: I didn't pay for no bots, I didn't go on
- 3:21Speaker 1: no hype train. I didn't originally get the video footage
- 3:26Speaker 1: and then post it. Someone else did and I just
- 3:30Speaker 1: shared it and it got two million views. I'm not joking.
- 3:35Speaker 1: Two million views. Now I only have a couple of
- 3:38Speaker 1: thousand subscribers. But the important part is, and this goes
- 3:43Speaker 1: for any content creator who's content you like. If you
- 3:48Speaker 1: like what they post, subscribe so you can see more.
- 3:52Speaker 1: I say it all the time, but in particular with
- 3:55Speaker 1: this channel, if you want to go deeper down the
- 3:59Speaker 1: hip hop rabbit, well, you can watch and listen to
- 4:02Speaker 1: podcasts like hip Hop Now podcast, which is weekly news
- 4:06Speaker 1: with my perspectives also your perspectives, because you can leave
- 4:10Speaker 1: them in the common section below. So with that being said,
- 4:15Speaker 1: stay tuned for more content. I've released some reaction videos.
- 4:20Speaker 1: There'll be more, but I'm also working on something I'll
- 4:23Speaker 1: talk about a little bit later in the episode. So
- 4:26Speaker 1: that being said, big shout out to hip HOPDX dot com,
- 4:31Speaker 1: who is really the only place I'm getting some of
- 4:33Speaker 1: this stuff from. So let's get right into the business.
- 4:40Speaker 1: Eminem recently beat out Kendrick Lamar at the American Music
- 4:46Speaker 1: Awards American Music Awards, and a lot of people are
- 4:51Speaker 1: up in arms. This is coming from hip Hop DX
- 4:54Speaker 1: dot com and this was let's see, let me just
- 4:58Speaker 1: read from the top, Kendrick Lamar, we are beaten by
- 5:01Speaker 1: Eminem at American Music Awards. I don't want to read
- 5:06Speaker 1: their whole thing, but let's just get into a little
- 5:09Speaker 1: bit of kendricks seemingly unbeatable streak has finally come to
- 5:13Speaker 1: an n at the AMA's. While the Comptence Superstar did
- 5:17Speaker 1: pick up a win for Favorite Hip Hop Song with
- 5:21Speaker 1: not Like Us, he was otherwise shut out at the ceremony.
- 5:28Speaker 1: Let's rewind real quick. Not trying to be a k by,
- 5:31Speaker 1: but I'll watch a lot of sports. The term shutout
- 5:35Speaker 1: means you didn't score, so if you got one, it's
- 5:41Speaker 1: not really a shutout. You feel me, I'm just a
- 5:44Speaker 1: sports head. I'm just saying. Lamar was nominated across five
- 5:48Speaker 1: other categories, included Artists of the Year, but was beaten
- 5:52Speaker 1: by Billie Eilish. I think that one is like, okay,
- 5:55Speaker 1: whatever American Music Awards. Sure, Eilish also triumphed over Lamar
- 6:01Speaker 1: and Album of the Year and Song of the Year.
- 6:05Speaker 1: That also can be a toss up. I didn't listen
- 6:08Speaker 1: to Billie Eilish. I know she's extremely popular. I know
- 6:11Speaker 1: that song was just as popular, so hey, it's not
- 6:16Speaker 1: a Grammy though. The biggest upset came in the hip
- 6:20Speaker 1: hop category hip Hop category, with Eminem taking home both
- 6:25Speaker 1: Favorite hip Hop Artists and Favorite hip Hop Album. And
- 6:31Speaker 1: here in lies the problem. Now, I'm a fan of both.
- 6:36Speaker 1: The Death of Slim Shady I thought was a good album,
- 6:40Speaker 1: but did it have the momentum to win in those
- 6:45Speaker 1: two categories last year and even the beginning of this year,
- 6:50Speaker 1: but probably last year mostly was it better than G
- 6:54Speaker 1: and X. I think it's too different to compare as
- 6:59Speaker 1: far as the albums go, because they're really two totally
- 7:03Speaker 1: different vibes and concepts and execution overall. But I didn't
- 7:10Speaker 1: think Eminem should be nominated for awards in that regard artists.
- 7:18Speaker 1: We all know it belongs to Kendrick. It was everywhere
- 7:22Speaker 1: it was everywhere on the radio. I'm in the Tri
- 7:26Speaker 1: State area on the radio in New York. I didn't
- 7:29Speaker 1: hear any any You're talking about American, right, all of America,
- 7:33Speaker 1: we leaving out New York City. I'm just saying, right,
- 7:38Speaker 1: But in general, Eminem is not the person he should
- 7:44Speaker 1: lose to. I know there was probably some other categories
- 7:49Speaker 1: that could have, like, you know, maybe you could have
- 7:51Speaker 1: put Pete and cl in the album discussion, but artists
- 7:57Speaker 1: definitely should have been Kendrick album. It's subjective, right, it
- 8:01Speaker 1: could have been whatever album. It just wasn't eminent. Now,
- 8:05Speaker 1: I'll say this, I know this is mostly a fan award, right,
- 8:13Speaker 1: not not like the Grammys with kind of like your
- 8:17Speaker 1: peers and music casemakers or whatever voting, including myself. But also, well,
- 8:26Speaker 1: my bad, I got a mixed up. I'm thinking about
- 8:28Speaker 1: the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, even though I
- 8:30Speaker 1: don't remember. Maybe I didn't, I don't know. But nevertheless,
- 8:37Speaker 1: even as a fan vote, Eminem has a lot of fans.
- 8:40Speaker 1: Don't get me wrong, but when did this vote take place?
- 8:45Speaker 1: How was it promoted? You know, like I didn't see
- 8:50Speaker 1: it as much as I saw that, And maybe this
- 8:53Speaker 1: maybe It's because I followed the Grammys a little bit
- 8:55Speaker 1: closer than the American Music Awards, but it felt weird
- 9:01Speaker 1: that it would be Eminem, But nevertheless he won. It
- 9:07Speaker 1: is what it is. Pretty sure m might say he
- 9:11Speaker 1: didn't deserve Artists of the Year album. He might debate
- 9:14Speaker 1: that because I'm pretty sure he thought his joint was great.
- 9:18Speaker 1: But that album came out and then it was done,
- 9:22Speaker 1: and it wasn't a black album. To me, it was
- 9:25Speaker 1: just that Hendrick was on fire man. People only cared
- 9:29Speaker 1: about if this man did a commercial, everybody, everybody's attention
- 9:34Speaker 1: would just go in his direction. People who hate him,
- 9:37Speaker 1: people who like him. It was just like he owned
- 9:39Speaker 1: the year as an artist, so anything that dropped from
- 9:42Speaker 1: the albums to videos or whatever, he kind of controlled
- 9:48Speaker 1: that space in a lot of ways. But again, if
- 9:52Speaker 1: this is a fan vote and the majority of the
- 9:54Speaker 1: fans voted for Eminem, it is what it is. I
- 9:58Speaker 1: will say this, If the American Music Awards as a
- 10:03Speaker 1: committee had anything to do with this, I would say
- 10:11Speaker 1: the most they could do was not deny this song
- 10:15Speaker 1: not like us, but to ignore gn X and songs
- 10:21Speaker 1: like Luther. It's interesting, you know, considering how popular it is,
- 10:27Speaker 1: considering the sole dout concert that's happening right now. I
- 10:31Speaker 1: think they didn't necessarily want to do what the Grammys
- 10:36Speaker 1: did and choose a side. I think that's what it is, y'all.
- 10:43Speaker 1: I think they didn't want to choose a side, you know.
- 10:47Speaker 1: And it could be for reasons that make absolute sense. Right.
- 10:52Speaker 1: For one, we don't want to get involved. We can't
- 10:55Speaker 1: deny this song was what it was. We're just going
- 10:59Speaker 1: to follow the Grand's lead and everybody's lead and not
- 11:02Speaker 1: like us as song or the year or whatever. Cool,
- 11:06Speaker 1: but we don't want to stack this man's trophy case,
- 11:11Speaker 1: mostly for not like us, given the opposition who probably
- 11:16Speaker 1: for years, you know, they've eight off of I'm gonna say,
- 11:23Speaker 1: Paul's okay, eight off of Drake's success, right, And you
- 11:27Speaker 1: don't want to give up too soon on a popular
- 11:31Speaker 1: artist because who's to say that bygones or bygones? And
- 11:36Speaker 1: Drake's back and he has hit records and now he's
- 11:41Speaker 1: not showing up to your awards show, or he won't
- 11:45Speaker 1: work with anybody related to you. For what it could
- 11:48Speaker 1: be a number of reasons, right, and some of it
- 11:50Speaker 1: I'm fishing, But at the end of the day, the
- 11:54Speaker 1: Eminem pick is what makes it questionable. It's like, this
- 11:59Speaker 1: is a artists in the album that really only fans
- 12:03Speaker 1: talked about honestly, and then they moved on. I haven't
- 12:10Speaker 1: listened to it since I reviewed it, not because it
- 12:12Speaker 1: was bad, but Eminem just makes typically except for that
- 12:18Speaker 1: music to murder By that was actually like dope and
- 12:21Speaker 1: have variety, but he typically makes albums that are like
- 12:27Speaker 1: Mister Morale and Big Steppers. You have to kind of
- 12:30Speaker 1: be in the mood to listen to it rather than
- 12:34Speaker 1: throw it on, let it rock or whatever, because it
- 12:37Speaker 1: could kind of become background. And that doesn't mean it's wack.
- 12:39Speaker 1: That just means the music is so based on a
- 12:44Speaker 1: concept that if you're not paying attention, what's the point.
- 12:50Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying, It's just white noise, no
- 12:52Speaker 1: matter whose album it is. So at the end of
- 12:55Speaker 1: the day, more awards for Kendrick. Who cares if he
- 13:01Speaker 1: doesn't get all the awards, but the fact that he
- 13:04Speaker 1: got another award for Not Like Us says a lie.
- 13:07Speaker 1: It just does next. So on a previous episode, I
- 13:17Speaker 1: asked the question does Joey look desperate? Meaning Joey Badass
- 13:23Speaker 1: if you don't know in calling out Hendrick at the
- 13:27Speaker 1: beginning of the year and the West Coast as a whole.
- 13:32Speaker 1: And I really only asked that question because of the
- 13:36Speaker 1: Kendrick thing, because it seemed like, fresh off of this
- 13:39Speaker 1: battle with Drake, Joey Badass is trying to throw his
- 13:43Speaker 1: hat in this battle space, and it just felt like
- 13:49Speaker 1: something he didn't really need to do, but wanted to
- 13:53Speaker 1: draw some true attention to what he had coming up,
- 13:57Speaker 1: which was you know, television show Canaan, the Power Joint,
- 14:05Speaker 1: also some campaigns he had going on as far as endorsements, right,
- 14:11Speaker 1: some ads, some stories, you know, his his woman, she's pregnant,
- 14:17Speaker 1: and then obviously and ultimately an album. And I think
- 14:24Speaker 1: in a lot of ways, as much as I didn't
- 14:27Speaker 1: like how he was, like, I'd rather him say something
- 14:30Speaker 1: slick that's a warning shot on an album than to
- 14:34Speaker 1: make a song about you know, Kendrick don't want it basically,
- 14:40Speaker 1: But at the end of the day, he did what
- 14:42Speaker 1: he did. And in the winter there were a couple
- 14:48Speaker 1: of replies, mainly from Ray Vaughn, who was signed to
- 14:52Speaker 1: TV Younger Cat, Newer Cat as far Newer and most
- 14:57Speaker 1: sides and Daylight, well known battle rapper from the West Coast.
- 15:04Speaker 1: And then it fizzled, and then Joey did a freestyle
- 15:08Speaker 1: with Absol and Big Sean, not only talking about that
- 15:16Speaker 1: but taking more shots, specifically at those guys who responded, Well,
- 15:21Speaker 1: that opened up a whole can of worms. And it
- 15:28Speaker 1: has to be more than ten. Gotta be more than
- 15:32Speaker 1: ten replies, replies and Joey replying to them and back
- 15:38Speaker 1: and forth. But it just was a crazy back and
- 15:40Speaker 1: forth and it was probably a really dope moment for well,
- 15:43Speaker 1: not probably, it was a dope moment for hip hop,
- 15:46Speaker 1: mainly because everybody was displaying bars and skilled and again
- 15:52Speaker 1: I credited Drake and Kendrick Battle because Kendrick won off
- 15:58Speaker 1: of bars. Kendrick off a technique and varied flows and
- 16:03Speaker 1: styles and and strategy, and it really got these guys
- 16:10Speaker 1: to do some of that, in particular Joey Badass. So
- 16:16Speaker 1: Joey versus everybody, did he win? I would say, I
- 16:25Speaker 1: don't know. I think it was a drug. And I
- 16:29Speaker 1: know some people, you know, they heard what Joey Badass did.
- 16:33Speaker 1: I did too, and say to themselves like, yo, he
- 16:36Speaker 1: was cooking them. But Ray Vaughn has some dope joints.
- 16:40Speaker 1: Daylight has some dope joints. And then he did what
- 16:43Speaker 1: Daylight does where you wonder to yourself, is he still
- 16:47Speaker 1: even battling? Is he still battering? What is he doing? Right?
- 16:53Speaker 1: But nevertheless, it was bars. There's a playlist that I
- 16:57Speaker 1: have at the end of description of this episode, also
- 17:00Speaker 1: on audio form for y'all want to check it out,
- 17:03Speaker 1: that has all the battles rap songs from Joey Badass
- 17:09Speaker 1: and everybody else listed and it's thirty of them. Now,
- 17:14Speaker 1: this is going all the way back to January when
- 17:16Speaker 1: it started. Nevertheless, this whole thing has been has generated
- 17:22Speaker 1: thirty this songs, thirty from various artists. Of course Joey
- 17:28Speaker 1: Badass has multiple Daylight rayvaugh But as I scrolled through
- 17:36Speaker 1: real quick, this is where things picked up, right, because
- 17:41Speaker 1: I don't think all of it was here, So the
- 17:46Speaker 1: one take cipher right, that took place two weeks ago
- 17:50Speaker 1: from now. Then there was Rayvaughn's whole era. Then it
- 17:55Speaker 1: was Joey Badass the finals. Then there was Reason Dead
- 18:01Speaker 1: Apple h and as see because Joey bada Is called
- 18:08Speaker 1: him something else, I and to forget how to pronounce
- 18:12Speaker 1: the last part of it as Chike Chick Cheap, but
- 18:20Speaker 1: he was featured on gn X on I think peakable
- 18:24Speaker 1: h and his song was what would You Do? Then
- 18:28Speaker 1: there was Daylight with word to whatever. I don't know
- 18:33Speaker 1: Daylight just just speak English though word to Mevilla whatever.
- 18:39Speaker 1: I don't care. C J Fly with Stingray. I don't
- 18:42Speaker 1: even know who that is, k Cash Nixon six. I
- 18:46Speaker 1: think Kate Cash was part of pro Err. I think
- 18:51Speaker 1: so really j One Bobby m I don't even Oh
- 18:58Speaker 1: that's Jada kiss Son. Everybody says that one was really wack.
- 19:02Speaker 1: I guess he was this in the West Coast, but
- 19:04Speaker 1: nobody care. Joey Badass My Town featuring Loaded Lucks, which
- 19:10Speaker 1: is tough. When I heard it, I was like, oh
- 19:13Speaker 1: Joey punching back Ray Vaughn GoldenEye, which was dope a
- 19:19Speaker 1: Daylight Ao, Joey Badass, crash dummy. This is when Joey
- 19:24Speaker 1: Badass said I'm gonna drop a bop just like not
- 19:27Speaker 1: like us, and I messed with it. It was over
- 19:29Speaker 1: the Tupac hit him up style beat. I like what
- 19:33Speaker 1: he did with it. It was a great response. Daylight,
- 19:36Speaker 1: I can't hold you something because it's cut off here.
- 19:39Speaker 1: I can't I can't see it, but it got chopped
- 19:42Speaker 1: cheese on. The cover word is Bond featuring Daylight. That's
- 19:47Speaker 1: that was more of a dedication than a disc where
- 19:52Speaker 1: I was just sort of like Daylight, what you're doing man?
- 19:59Speaker 1: The last supper for Hit a J three headshot from
- 20:02Speaker 1: Hitter J three. That's Kendrick's homie and I think he
- 20:06Speaker 1: was also on gn X. Nick Caushin Died Another Day.
- 20:11Speaker 1: That's the dude from pro Era. That was all right,
- 20:15Speaker 1: and Daylight end credits, which was cool, but it was
- 20:19Speaker 1: so rapidly rap I'd stopped listening halfway through. So bars
- 20:26Speaker 1: now they are more records than this because I just
- 20:28Speaker 1: went from two weeks ago. There were a number of
- 20:33Speaker 1: songs before them. I feel like in the beginning, Joey
- 20:39Speaker 1: Badass just seemed desperate for Kendrick battle. In some ways,
- 20:42Speaker 1: he still does seem that way by recently saying, you know,
- 20:47Speaker 1: oh got scared, which is I mean, I don't know.
- 20:55Speaker 1: It's not that I don't want Joey to say anything.
- 20:58Speaker 1: I just come on, we just did the battle thing,
- 21:02Speaker 1: like just dropped, just dropped something fire and people will
- 21:07Speaker 1: pay attention because they're gonna be looking for Kendrick. This
- 21:10Speaker 1: is here and there, and you got what you wanted, Joey.
- 21:13Speaker 1: But I will say this, Kendrick decides to respond, I
- 21:16Speaker 1: will be interested because I think Joey held it down
- 21:21Speaker 1: not only for the borough BK for New York. You're
- 21:25Speaker 1: not the King of New York. But I get it.
- 21:30Speaker 1: But just at the simple fact that there were multiple
- 21:34Speaker 1: people this in him. See Drake said the twenty v one,
- 21:37Speaker 1: But it was really like Rick Ross had kind of
- 21:40Speaker 1: a you know or whatever distrack metro booming. I mean,
- 21:46Speaker 1: they weren't really making distract. It wasn't really rating Boss.
- 21:49Speaker 1: The only bars that were coming at Drake were from Boss,
- 21:54Speaker 1: from or from Kendrick. Right. So at the end of
- 21:59Speaker 1: the day, it was kind of like it was really
- 22:01Speaker 1: one v one. There were just a couple of people
- 22:04Speaker 1: who didn't like you, but they weren't really going any
- 22:07Speaker 1: like that. This was different. These were rapper rappers from
- 22:11Speaker 1: the West Coast and such who got bars making multiple
- 22:16Speaker 1: records about you, and Joey was just taking them, taking
- 22:21Speaker 1: on all comers like yo, I guess I gotta say,
- 22:24Speaker 1: pauls the game. I hate y'all kids, but you know
- 22:28Speaker 1: what I mean. So I think he walked out with
- 22:31Speaker 1: a little bit more respect than most. I'm a Joey
- 22:35Speaker 1: Badass fan. I'm sitting on albums and mixtapes and stuff
- 22:39Speaker 1: like that, so I already liked dude, and I would
- 22:42Speaker 1: already anticipate an album. But I think this battle and
- 22:47Speaker 1: how he was able to, you know, stand up and fight,
- 22:52Speaker 1: you know, I think it did a lot for his
- 22:55Speaker 1: image as an MC. I think he gained a couple
- 22:58Speaker 1: a few more fans as result, because I think the
- 23:03Speaker 1: difference between these records, the three records he dropped and
- 23:07Speaker 1: the videos coming for the joint with Loaded Lux, if
- 23:11Speaker 1: it's not a reality, these new records, new diss records
- 23:16Speaker 1: he dropped, the finals My Town and Crash Dummy are
- 23:21Speaker 1: way better than the tracks he started with in December,
- 23:27Speaker 1: I mean in winter, like January or whatever, way better.
- 23:32Speaker 1: So to me, it was like those were like I
- 23:36Speaker 1: think somebody said I think it was Crooked Eye, was like,
- 23:39Speaker 1: those were them coffee house raps. And on December now
- 23:43Speaker 1: this was like, yo, I'm in the bodega ordering a
- 23:46Speaker 1: chop cheese with the Thames on Joey so great, for
- 23:52Speaker 1: hip hop, great moment if you would like to just
- 23:55Speaker 1: go down the rabbit hole in order and just listen
- 23:58Speaker 1: to eat a song from Joey Badass. Each reply mainly
- 24:04Speaker 1: from Rayvon in Daylight, but all the replies of that,
- 24:07Speaker 1: and most of them are dope. Sorry Jadak his son Yeah,
- 24:11Speaker 1: because I was just like, who is this? Who said
- 24:14Speaker 1: your name? But nevertheless, I think it was a dope
- 24:18Speaker 1: time for hip hop and a battle. So let me
- 24:23Speaker 1: know what you think. Do you think Joey Badass one?
- 24:25Speaker 1: Do you think the West Coast got him? Is it
- 24:28Speaker 1: a draw? Are you a bigger fan of any of
- 24:31Speaker 1: these artists as a result including something new that drop
- 24:37Speaker 1: that sort of kind of related to this from Abso
- 24:41Speaker 1: leave your comments in the comments section below, and least
- 24:48Speaker 1: so as we approach the halfway point of twenty twenty five,
- 24:58Speaker 1: most music outlets like to put out a best of
- 25:03Speaker 1: the year so far. Right here on hip Hop Now podcast,
- 25:07Speaker 1: we do the exact same thing. I also have a
- 25:11Speaker 1: playlist that represents a lot of the music that's been
- 25:14Speaker 1: released thus far and will obviously be the best of
- 25:18Speaker 1: a year playlist in December. But I also have my
- 25:24Speaker 1: list of best of the year so far, and that's
- 25:27Speaker 1: coming up in an episode in June that you can
- 25:31Speaker 1: check out, and it'll be a special episode dedicated maybe
- 25:34Speaker 1: even a live stream dedicated specifically to some of the
- 25:39Speaker 1: best projects, albums EPs in hip hop that have dropped
- 25:43Speaker 1: in twenty twenty five. But it's old. Wayne's fun because
- 25:48Speaker 1: as a music fan, I listen to a lot of
- 25:50Speaker 1: music that's not just hip hop. But we all have
- 25:55Speaker 1: a rotation, even if it's one album you've just been
- 25:58Speaker 1: listening to riding to. Everybody has a list of some
- 26:03Speaker 1: sort of what they've been listening to, even if it's
- 26:06Speaker 1: like a playlist, you know what I'm saying. Like the
- 26:08Speaker 1: other day, I was listening to a Ransom playlists on
- 26:13Speaker 1: Spotify and I'm just like, man, this man just got
- 26:16Speaker 1: bars for things. I got a lot of his projects.
- 26:19Speaker 1: But it's it's always nice to step away from your
- 26:21Speaker 1: own music. Right now, I'm going to give you five
- 26:28Speaker 1: albums that I'm currently listening to right now as far
- 26:32Speaker 1: as heavy rotation and why no order right we're not
- 26:37Speaker 1: ranking them. Number one Freddy Gibbs Freddy from twenty eighteen.
- 26:42Speaker 1: This was an album Freddy Gibbs dropped that the cover
- 26:48Speaker 1: and the title of the album were homages to Teddy
- 26:54Speaker 1: Pendergrass album Teddy same album cover. Freddy Gibbs did a
- 26:59Speaker 1: whole promotional rollout that was real R and B is.
- 27:05Speaker 1: But what made me go back to this album was one,
- 27:09Speaker 1: I liked it, but you know how you like something
- 27:11Speaker 1: and you played it a lot one year, and maybe
- 27:14Speaker 1: you haven't revisited the album in a long time, so
- 27:18Speaker 1: you sort of forget. You kind of only remember a
- 27:20Speaker 1: song or two. Man, when I pressed play on this joint,
- 27:23Speaker 1: I was like, I forgot how crazy this album was
- 27:27Speaker 1: and what I like about it is it was the
- 27:30Speaker 1: first time. And I said this on the Homie Kills
- 27:33Speaker 1: podcast Apartment five B. Check that out on YouTube and
- 27:38Speaker 1: the audio form. But I said, like, when I heard
- 27:42Speaker 1: this album, I was like, Yo, this man could rap
- 27:45Speaker 1: over anything. He can sound dope over anything. He's so
- 27:48Speaker 1: polished as an MC. It doesn't matter how many albums,
- 27:53Speaker 1: what the song is, what the beat is, He's always
- 27:57Speaker 1: on point. But with this album in particular, Freddy, Yo,
- 28:03Speaker 1: the beats Like, I don't have no crazy system in
- 28:07Speaker 1: my office, right, I got a monitor that's right here,
- 28:09Speaker 1: but you can't see it. And you know, I got
- 28:12Speaker 1: a little you know, you see that what is that
- 28:15Speaker 1: apple iPod whatever? That basketball tennis ball? You see that joke,
- 28:19Speaker 1: But I have them synced up. And when the beats
- 28:23Speaker 1: hit on that album, Yo, the the base was crazy
- 28:27Speaker 1: and I was in here like yo. It's almost as
- 28:30Speaker 1: if I was hearing it for the first time. So
- 28:33Speaker 1: as a result, I've been listening to it more than often. Also,
- 28:39Speaker 1: album released this year, Westside Gun twelve. To me, this
- 28:44Speaker 1: is like West Side Gun's best project in a little while.
- 28:49Speaker 1: To me, I think probably since the joint called ten,
- 28:53Speaker 1: I thought that was dope, but this joint twelve is
- 29:00Speaker 1: though for a lot of reasons, you know, features a
- 29:02Speaker 1: lot of Stove God, which is, you know, I'm a
- 29:05Speaker 1: big fan of stove God. But one of the things
- 29:08Speaker 1: about Stove God what Griselda is the fact that Stove
- 29:11Speaker 1: God has some contractual dispute going on where he can't
- 29:14Speaker 1: really release an album. Last year he released an EP
- 29:19Speaker 1: on an independent site that was crazy and they had
- 29:23Speaker 1: to take it down, which is crazy in itself, But
- 29:27Speaker 1: a way to keep him out there in the hip
- 29:30Speaker 1: hop lexicon was to feature him on Griselda projects prominently,
- 29:36Speaker 1: and on this West Side Gun album he's on, he's
- 29:38Speaker 1: featured prominently on here, and everything is just dope and
- 29:43Speaker 1: it's not just him, you know what I'm saying. So
- 29:46Speaker 1: I really liked that joint. I did a review a
- 29:48Speaker 1: couple of episodes back Buster Rhymes nineteen ninety seven when
- 29:55Speaker 1: disaster strikes the reason why I'm listening to this album
- 29:59Speaker 1: well on his very every channel. What I'm going to
- 30:01Speaker 1: do in the very near future is a Buster Rhymes
- 30:05Speaker 1: ranking of albums. I've done a few like ray Kwon
- 30:10Speaker 1: and Daylight, Soul and Metha Men and Red Men albums,
- 30:13Speaker 1: Ghost Face Snoop, I've done a couple of eminem Common,
- 30:17Speaker 1: and the list goes on, so Smith and Wesson most
- 30:22Speaker 1: recently also, So I wanted to do one on bust
- 30:25Speaker 1: to Rhymes because like all of those other artists I mentioned,
- 30:30Speaker 1: a lot of times, you know, once you have like
- 30:34Speaker 1: five six albums from an artist, some people check out
- 30:40Speaker 1: and some albums become a blur and you really only
- 30:45Speaker 1: remember those that stand out the most. But that doesn't
- 30:47Speaker 1: make every other project you can't remember why you just
- 30:51Speaker 1: don't remember it, you know what I'm saying. And a
- 30:54Speaker 1: lot of times I've found when I go back and listen.
- 30:58Speaker 1: Great example, I did it episode and this was only
- 31:01Speaker 1: audio at the time. Excuse me, but I did an
- 31:04Speaker 1: episode on Big Daddy Kane's albums Tasted Chocolate and Prince
- 31:10Speaker 1: of Darkness, which are prominently named as his fall off projects.
- 31:17Speaker 1: I realized that Taste the Chocolate was not that bad.
- 31:22Speaker 1: Sure the album cover was what it was, but it
- 31:25Speaker 1: was kine. But the album wasn't as bad as I
- 31:29Speaker 1: My memory told it told me it was Prince of
- 31:32Speaker 1: Darkness was sleet trash. But that's how I feel with Buster.
- 31:37Speaker 1: I feel like when I think about Buster's catalog without listening,
- 31:42Speaker 1: I think about the albums that stand out, which maybe
- 31:46Speaker 1: like two or three, and then I really don't remember
- 31:49Speaker 1: the rest, Like when disaster strikes I vaguely remembered, I
- 31:53Speaker 1: remember the high points, but I don't remember anything else.
- 31:56Speaker 1: So that's the album I'm listening to right now. I
- 32:00Speaker 1: already listened to The Coming, and I'm going to go
- 32:04Speaker 1: through the whole catalog, including that other one, the Blockbuster,
- 32:10Speaker 1: and look out for a video releasing. All right, two
- 32:14Speaker 1: more to go so we can get up out of here.
- 32:16Speaker 1: Lloyd Banks aon three. Despite my mistakes, it was released
- 32:20Speaker 1: this year. I did a review a couple of episodes
- 32:23Speaker 1: back Very Dope album. I think when Lloyd Banks has beats,
- 32:29Speaker 1: like beats that are really tough, his lyrics shine through.
- 32:33Speaker 1: He always has bars, but sometimes it become a little
- 32:37Speaker 1: monotonous listening to him, and some of that's here also,
- 32:40Speaker 1: but he raping rapping on here, and the beats match
- 32:45Speaker 1: it so and the guest appearances are perfect, so I
- 32:49Speaker 1: check that joint out. And lastly, it's an album that
- 32:53Speaker 1: I kind of only listened to because I saw no
- 32:56Speaker 1: Id and I was like, well, I like no Id,
- 32:58Speaker 1: so it could be great Saba and no Id from
- 33:03Speaker 1: the private collection of Saba and no Id. I'm gonna
- 33:06Speaker 1: tell you right now. I know there's a lot of
- 33:11Speaker 1: albums coming from mass appeals, in premier clips and whatever
- 33:17Speaker 1: else is on the docket that can potentially make my
- 33:20Speaker 1: top five of the year, but it's going to be
- 33:23Speaker 1: difficult to knock this one out because I think this
- 33:26Speaker 1: is just such a great album. It's kind of refreshing
- 33:29Speaker 1: from a different style of rapper, you know what I'm saying.
- 33:32Speaker 1: And then when I say style, I don't mean he
- 33:34Speaker 1: strayed so far away from what you know. I just
- 33:36Speaker 1: mean that it's dope beats from no id and a
- 33:41Speaker 1: rapper who can wrack, who is thought provoking when he raps,
- 33:47Speaker 1: interesting when he raps, and relatable. You know everybody either
- 33:51Speaker 1: shot shooting up the spot or got more money than you.
- 33:56Speaker 1: It's refreshing sometimes to just hear somebody rap about anything
- 34:02Speaker 1: and everything, to be honest. So there you have it.
- 34:05Speaker 1: That's my top five in rotation. What's it your rotation?
- 34:09Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying. Oh, you listen to any
- 34:10Speaker 1: mostly new stuff, mostly old stuff. Leave your comments in
