- 0:00Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the three O take where we talk
- 0:04all things Major League Baseball.
- 0:06Here's Kyle Corwin and Nate Reyes.
- 0:10It all starts right now. Welcome back to the Theo Tech
- 0:15presented by Chinook Cedry this episode 565.
- 0:19I'll be your host Kyle Corn. I'm here with my Co host Nate
- 0:22Reyes. Nate.
- 0:27Casey, how are we? Sounds like a little better than
- 0:32you my friend. Just old man in it over here,
- 0:38old man in it. You said you fouled up your back
- 0:44lifting a box, how heavy it was. Like 120 lbs Nothing crazy, it's
- 0:50just was awkwardly shaped and it was on the ground I mean.
- 0:55I don't, I don't think you should be downplaying it.
- 0:57I think that's a, that's a, that's probably a pretty normal
- 1:01result. Yeah, I bet you 789 out of 10
- 1:06people probably tweak in their back trying to lift that.
- 1:10Well, I mean, what's weird is that like it, I did it like I
- 1:14think I lifted it a week and a half ago and I didn't notice it
- 1:19like afterwards, didn't notice it even a couple days out.
- 1:23It was just like kept getting worse and worse.
- 1:26And then like within the last three days it's been like
- 1:31horrendous, horrendous. That's fun.
- 1:37It's good stuff. So if you see me, I'm sitting
- 1:41weird in my chair. We'll try to keep this on
- 1:44YouTube. Please don't judge.
- 1:46Yeah, no, not at all. Well, I'll do my best to to keep
- 1:50us moving here, to keep. I mean you just let it just
- 1:53looks painful. I got the shooting pains down
- 1:57the leg and in into the shin. I don't even understand how
- 2:00you're. Sweet.
- 2:02Your position right now, it's kind of kind of strange, but.
- 2:05Dude, I was telling that I was standing there.
- 2:07I was about to shower last night because I got in the hot tub and
- 2:11so I was like going to shower before bed.
- 2:13And I'm standing there in the mirror and I'm like in my mind,
- 2:17if I close my eyes, I'm standing straight, but I look at my and
- 2:22it's like this, like my, like I'm like curved, like my belly
- 2:26button is not in the center of like my chin and my nose and
- 2:30like where your belt buckle would be like all of that should
- 2:33be centered. It's not everything's like
- 2:35twisted. It's.
- 2:36Terrible. You've got forward facing
- 2:38scoliosis essentially. It's but not like, yeah, not
- 2:42like leaning this way. It's like sideways it's.
- 2:45Crazy. Yeah, it's forward.
- 2:46Yeah. Off to the side.
- 2:47Yeah. That's not good.
- 2:51Sounds pretty painful. Speaking of pain, let's talk
- 2:54about. Let's right off the top here,
- 2:56let's talk about this Framber Valdez situation.
- 3:01We'll call it put it. Put it lightly.
- 3:03Actually, no, let's just call it what it is.
- 3:05Call a spade. Call a spade.
- 3:07Spade. This was a garbage move.
- 3:09This was a a Bush league move and I'll be honest with you, I
- 3:13didn't find out or I'll say I didn't realize that Framber
- 3:18Valdez was the hot head that he is until I started learning more
- 3:24about this little incident. There we go, Astros fans in the
- 3:28comments. Being like this is nothing new.
- 3:31It's like I I was a little surprised I didn't.
- 3:34Apparently, yeah, apparently there's people close to the the
- 3:37organization that have have kind of echoed the same sentiment.
- 3:40I'm like, as is it that bad? I mean, I could understand, you
- 3:45know, just haven't watched him pitch over the last few years.
- 3:48Like, OK, guys got a little bit of an edge to him, but I just
- 3:52thought that was nothing more than, you know, something that
- 3:54fueled his competitiveness. But clearly it goes a little too
- 4:00far at times. This was crazy.
- 4:05Can we just go ahead and make sure we're on the same page
- 4:10here? Fully intentional.
- 4:12Yes. There was nothing about this.
- 4:15There was 0 remorse after absolutely drilling your catcher
- 4:21in the stomach like that was on purpose.
- 4:25So if you're if you're just catching up, you're just hearing
- 4:28about this for the first time, basically what happened and this
- 4:32was this was in your game. So I mean, you're presumably
- 4:34you're at the very least, yeah, had it off on on the phone off
- 4:38to the side at the very least. But you're watching this.
- 4:41And the catcher, Cesar Salazar, I guess goes to pitch Com that
- 4:52gets that gets the shake from Framber.
- 4:55He then tells Framber, hey, step off, let's reset.
- 4:59You know, a very common normal, a very normal procedure if if
- 5:04you're not on the same page as a battery framer says no, I'm
- 5:10already I'm already in motion here, laces in.
- 5:14What was that a change up? Sinker 96.
- 5:19Sinker to Trent Grisham, Grand Slam into the Crawford boxes.
- 5:25The second pitch of the next AB, who I believe it was it Volpe.
- 5:34Yeah, it was Volpe, Yeah. Second pitch of the AB he
- 5:42Salazar calls for a pitch, presumably an off speed breaking
- 5:47ball. Again, Framber's like, I've got
- 5:55it, don't worry, and proceeds to to lay in a a mid 90s fastball
- 6:01straight to the ribs, completely catching Salazar off guard.
- 6:06And look, we can just go ahead and use this as a learning
- 6:10moment for people, a good teaching moment because I in in
- 6:13the comments today and, you know, sort of getting a getting
- 6:16a feel for what people's thoughts are or were on the on
- 6:19the matter. A lot of people who presumably
- 6:23aren't baseball fans, but they came across this because it's,
- 6:27you know, something that's catching the airwaves.
- 6:30People are like, he's a catcher. Shouldn't I mean, the ball is
- 6:34right there. She's a.
- 6:35Scary amount of comments that are reflecting this by the way.
- 6:38Yeah, and and look, some some people just willfully ignorant,
- 6:43but there are some like I, I've seen some people preface it with
- 6:45being like, hey, genuine question.
- 6:47I don't really know. But like he has a glove.
- 6:50He's looking at him like why? Like what's the deal there?
- 6:53For those that can't fully grasp the you know the what's?
- 6:59No, I'm not even going to, I'm not going to throw that light on
- 7:01people. No, there's people that
- 7:03genuinely want to know and like, just don't they.
- 7:06Don't know ball. I mean, I guess what they're
- 7:09trying. So that's what we're here to
- 7:10teach them. Basically, if you're calling for
- 7:12an off speed or a breaking pitch of any of any variety and that's
- 7:17what you're expecting and you think that that's what your
- 7:21pitcher is prepared to throw, but he throws a fast, a mid 90s
- 7:27fastball, mid to upper 90s fastball.
- 7:31You, you don't have time like, yeah, I'm sure if you're, if
- 7:34you're listening or if you're remotely interested in baseball,
- 7:36you've seen like those sports science videos where it talks
- 7:38about how little time you have from the release of the ball to
- 7:42when it hits the glove. You don't have.
- 7:45You don't have that kind of time to react.
- 7:47No. You do not have any sort of time
- 7:50to react, so it's. Also, as a catcher, you know
- 7:52your pitcher and you know that like if anyone's ever seen those
- 7:55like pitch overlay videos where a change up versus a fastball or
- 8:00a curveball versus a fastball, you see it like layered over
- 8:03each other. And this ball looks the same for
- 8:0685% of the way. A catcher is expecting at that
- 8:09certain point to say, OK, I called a curveball.
- 8:12I know I'm going to put my glove here because I've seen a
- 8:15curveball at this spot from this pitcher a million times and it
- 8:19ends up being a fastball. That glove is not going to move
- 8:21back up in time. It's just not going to happen.
- 8:24So that's why you get squared up.
- 8:26And the fact that Framber immediately turns around, like
- 8:29there's no, like I've seen I've anybody that's ever played
- 8:36baseball, it's like if you've thrown a ball at like a teammate
- 8:40that wasn't paying attention, the split second before it gets
- 8:45there and you realize their glove is not in the right
- 8:47position. There's like this like weird
- 8:49cringe like or like you want to say something, but it moves in
- 8:53slow motion and you can't like there is a reaction or there's
- 8:57like, Oh no, like after to make sure they're OK.
- 9:01He immediately turns around, does not react at all that there
- 9:06was no glove on this. By the way, that padding is not
- 9:12like bulletproof. OK, that still hurts a lot.
- 9:18I think he was wearing Mizuno. I didn't, I didn't go back and
- 9:20double check. I think he was wearing Mizuno.
- 9:22And I one of the comments on the video was like, Mizuno needs to
- 9:24make a commercial out of this. I'm like.
- 9:27Yeah bro doesn't even react need it.
- 9:30Ate it. Yeah, no.
- 9:33If there was any question as to whether or not this was
- 9:36intentional, the body language told you everything you needed
- 9:38to know. Yeah, 100% a hundred.
- 9:42Percent. What a sleazeball man.
- 9:43Like super. Scummy move.
- 9:45This isn't. This isn't.
- 9:47I saw some comments that were like, oh, teammates have beef
- 9:51all the time. Not at the risk of this, like
- 9:54not at the risk of injury, not even if there's a scuffle,
- 9:58that's one thing. If there's an argument, that's
- 10:00one thing. This is like full on, like
- 10:04you're, you know what you're doing, you know you're putting
- 10:08your player and your teammate at risk.
- 10:10It's crazy. I've never seen anything like
- 10:12that. Perfect example that just came
- 10:15to mind. If people want to say like,
- 10:16well, teammates get physical all the time.
- 10:18Like look at look back in the day when like Papplebone and
- 10:21Harper were going at each other's throats.
- 10:24They at least in that split second, mutually agree that
- 10:28like, OK, we're about to get it on here like let's go drop the
- 10:32gloves. But if you you're a friend of
- 10:35Valdez, you're not giving him a fair shake whatsoever.
- 10:38You completely blindsiding him. And then to your point about the
- 10:430 remorse turn, turning your back on that guy was just so
- 10:48unbelievably scummy. Yeah, then Salazar's response,
- 10:52you by the way, he got up and threw the ball back.
- 10:54That was another instance of body language.
- 10:56Where you're going there is there is something wrong going
- 11:00on. Here and by the way, for those
- 11:02unfamiliar, I guess if we're educating non ball knowers,
- 11:07these are called cross ups. Cross ups are unintentional.
- 11:12Cross ups typically happened in the past because there was no
- 11:16pitch com of catcher was putting his fingers down and more often
- 11:20than not there were multiple signs and there was a language
- 11:22being spoken between the two of what sign to go off of to tell
- 11:26them what pitch to throw. And there were at times cross
- 11:30ups and you can go back and you can find videos of cross ups and
- 11:34watch how a catcher reacts with the expectation of one pitch and
- 11:37receiving another. You can see the, the, the
- 11:41movement of that way. This lines up with that.
- 11:43But after said unintentional cross up, 99% of the time
- 11:49there's a mound visit following to go get on the same page.
- 11:54So the body language, the fact that there was no, no mound
- 11:58visit afterwards to get on the same page, 100% intentional.
- 12:05And I got to give mad props to this catcher for not saying
- 12:10something in post game interviews and for not actually
- 12:13just throwing hands with him right then and there, or at
- 12:17least in the dugout after the inning.
- 12:18He covered for him. It's not that he didn't say he
- 12:22wasn't just like a no comment. I'm going to I'm, I'm not, I'm
- 12:24not talking to the media tonight.
- 12:26He actively covered for Framber, which says more about Salazar, I
- 12:32think in this situation than Framber.
- 12:33Like if if you're if you're going to cover for a guy, that's
- 12:36that. That tells me you're a pretty
- 12:39good teammate. Like if you're going to if
- 12:40you're going to take that from from and I don't mean that in
- 12:43like a, a, a you're rolling over kind of way, but I'm saying if
- 12:46you are physically literally going to take that and then
- 12:50after the game be like, yeah. I mean, he, he said some of the
- 12:53effect of like what? Yeah.
- 12:54You know, there's a lot of Yankees fans in here and it just
- 12:57made it tough to hear. And and I, it's I may have hit
- 13:00the wrong button. No, dude, you, you did exactly
- 13:03what you're so super. I'm, I'm sorry.
- 13:05You have like a garbage teammate in Framber Valdez, but you know,
- 13:10and then Framber after the game is like, well, you know, like it
- 13:13wasn't intentional, You know, just to mix up.
- 13:17I I take full response and they shut up.
- 13:19Dude, no you don't like. And it sucks because it's like
- 13:23he's not their everyday catcher. He's not even really I, I'll be
- 13:28straight up. I didn't know his name before
- 13:30this incident, so. Dude's been up.
- 13:32For look, no disrespect, I'm just saying I wasn't familiar.
- 13:37He's no, no, no, I'm, I'm, I'm agreeing with you.
- 13:39He's literally been up for, Let me confirm here, Caesar Salazar.
- 13:48He has played in 11 games this year, 13 at bats.
- 13:52Bros fighting for a job. So it's like, it's one thing if
- 13:58it's your everyday guy and you're I bet your everyday
- 14:02catcher would be like, Nah, we're going to chat this out
- 14:05right now. But it's tough, man.
- 14:07This guy's putting in like a impossible position.
- 14:10What is he going to do out his teammate and then cause chaos in
- 14:14the clubhouse? He's been there for two weeks.
- 14:17It's too bad, too bad. I hate that.
- 14:21I hated seeing it super skunk. Well, in the moment I didn't
- 14:26mind it. But now as like a baseball fan
- 14:28like this is just it's there's no room for this.
- 14:32It's crazy. It's a crazy thing to do.
- 14:40I'm I'm not in a a Major League front office.
- 14:43I I think that goes without saying, but how how this wasn't
- 14:47addressed by the Astros and and look, even I'm going to look
- 14:52past the whole like, what do you expect from a a terrible
- 14:56organization like the Astros? I'm not, I'm, I'm, I'm not, I'm
- 14:59simply just not involving this, the cheating scandal.
- 15:02This I'm I'm, I'm saying through the lens of looking at a
- 15:06baseball organization for what they are, how the Astros didn't
- 15:13like, dare I say, make an example out of framer Valdez.
- 15:18I understand, you know, that we're we're in the final month
- 15:20of the regular season here and there's like a lot at stake.
- 15:23But I mean, what are, what are, what are we saying to the other
- 15:27guys on that team that are, that have a, a shorter tenure or make
- 15:34less money than say a guy like Framer Valley?
- 15:37Like, what is that? What are you saying to those
- 15:39guys where it's like, Hey, sorry, unless you provide XYZ
- 15:45impacts for us, you're sort of dispensable to us.
- 15:49And if something, if you get caught up in the middle of
- 15:51something like this, whether it's this or, you know, a
- 15:54skirmish in the in the clubhouse, there's not much we
- 15:57can really do because we really need, we need the best line up
- 16:01out there. Like what are what are what are
- 16:03we saying? Come on.
- 16:06And, and I know there's some brilliant baseball minds down
- 16:09there in Houston X players and the like.
- 16:14If you've been around this game, all it took was watching that
- 16:18once. Yeah.
- 16:20And you know what happened? Yeah, and especially the amount
- 16:23of steam it's caught on social media.
- 16:27I mean, these these questions are going to continue to pour in
- 16:30until someone just comes out and says something.
- 16:33But I don't know, the winning cures all.
- 16:36So if they go out and win tonight, maybe it goes away.
- 16:38I don't know. I I got to think that this, this
- 16:43turned a lot of guys in that clubhouse off to Framework
- 16:46Valdez, like for good because like we said it, it sounds like
- 16:49that this has been an ongoing thing.
- 16:53Yeah. As it pertains to the perception
- 16:55around him, I can't imagine even a little quick winning streak
- 17:01would would make this go away. But who's to say?
- 17:05Let's talk more drama, more physicality on the baseball
- 17:11field. Giants and Rockies with a weird,
- 17:19just a very, very strange but predictable scenario.
- 17:26Rafael Devers, they're in Coors. Kyle Freeland on the mound who's
- 17:29just had a rough go of it. Let's be honest, an absolute
- 17:32rough go of it. Really any pitcher, any pitcher
- 17:37that toes the rubber there probably going to have a rough
- 17:40go of it. But when you're wearing that
- 17:42uniform and you've been there for as long as he has, it's
- 17:45going to it's going to wear on you, I would imagine.
- 17:48So he he serves one up to Devers.
- 17:51Devers puts it over the over the wall for his 30th on the air and
- 17:56made sure to made sure that he wasn't going to forget it
- 18:01anytime soon. We'll just say that Kyle
- 18:04Freeland took exception, starts barking at Devers.
- 18:07Devers doesn't even reach first base before he starts barking
- 18:10back, drops in some expletives. Freeland does the same.
- 18:15Both dugouts clear. I got to say, I don't know if I
- 18:18I I'm sure they did, but I don't.
- 18:19I didn't see the bullpens clear. That's a good point.
- 18:23Immediately, I'm fine with that. I I would prefer to have a a
- 18:30blower trigger on the bullpen entering the scene.
- 18:35Yeah, like that's a good point. Like we, we're just, we're going
- 18:38to need one of the one of the guys that are in the dugout
- 18:43maybe after a certain amount of time to give a signal, right, to
- 18:47indicate like, yeah, we could do some reinforcements out here.
- 18:50And even for this one, honestly, this one caught steam quick.
- 18:53Like this it did. This took off quick.
- 18:56Yeah, that I think they said no punches were thrown.
- 18:58There may have been like a couple of jabs, but there
- 19:01weren't. I mean, there was no like right
- 19:02hooks or anything. There was, there was some
- 19:05physicality as I mentioned, some some pushing, some shoving, more
- 19:08so than we've seen in previous skirmishes, so.
- 19:12Matt Chapman was not having any of it either.
- 19:14Matt Chapman got. A little suspension, huh?
- 19:17Got suspended for a game, was fined.
- 19:19Freeland Devers and Willie Adamas also fined.
- 19:25But the bigger the bigger issue here, as it always is with
- 19:29incidents such as this. You had a whole rant today, so
- 19:33the whole. Let the kids play thing look,
- 19:37I'm how many more times do we have to have this conversation?
- 19:43Are what are like as a as a sport?
- 19:45What are we doing? Are we, are we committing to
- 19:48this bit or not like the whole the the let the kids play thing?
- 19:51Are we are we OK with it? Because if we are, there
- 19:55shouldn't be varying degrees of acceptance.
- 19:58You know, like it. It shouldn't be like, well, if
- 20:01you're a pitcher, well, I'm. I'm fine with letting the kids
- 20:05play as long as said Kidd only admires his home run for under 4
- 20:09seconds. It's it's, it's all or nothing.
- 20:12You, we we can't. And I, I see people saying,
- 20:15well, the game policies itself, yes, that's true.
- 20:20But at the same time, we can't, we can't be having every player
- 20:26draw their own line in the sand and bike.
- 20:27Well, this is this is how far I let the kids play before I speak
- 20:31up and say something and, and make my frustration known.
- 20:37I get it. Like I said, Kyle Freeland's
- 20:39been going through it. I can't imagine you're you're
- 20:43looking forward to lacing them up each and every day if you
- 20:49play for the Rockies and especially if you have to pitch
- 20:51for the Rockies. They just lost their 100th game.
- 20:56I just lost their hundredth game relevant context here.
- 21:00Great, great point. It's I, I don't know, it's like
- 21:05I, I get it if you're frustrated, if you're Kyle
- 21:09Freeland, But at the same time, like I said, a bigger picture
- 21:13here that we have to look at is like, what are we doing as a
- 21:17sport? Are are we, are we getting, are
- 21:19we going to accept this for what it is?
- 21:22Because this is what we, this is what we're told.
- 21:24Every day is the new normal. And if you don't agree with it,
- 21:28then hit the road. OK, Well, if that's the case,
- 21:32then players and fans alike need to be on board with it.
- 21:36It can't be. Well, I'm all for it until it
- 21:39happens to me. Or if you're a fan, I'm on board
- 21:41with it until it happens to my team.
- 21:43Like accept it or don't? Sure, that's very fair, Very
- 21:47fair. This is the stance we've been
- 21:50we've had since the beginning. I think it's that's what makes
- 21:54our game great. There's unwritten rules.
- 21:56I'm not saying that you can't have fun.
- 21:58I'm not saying I'm not down for a couple bat flips every once in
- 22:02awhile, but it's I don't know, like you said, there's there's
- 22:08like a varying degree of acceptance.
- 22:12Like how long did he stand there?
- 22:14How far was that bat flip? How high was that bat flip?
- 22:18How long did he take to trot around the bases?
- 22:20Like what are what's defining it?
- 22:24And it's very subjective to like the scenario, like who The, Who
- 22:29the team, who the player is on what team and what the, you
- 22:33know, context of the season may be.
- 22:35It's like all of these kind of go into it and it's drama.
- 22:43It's drama. I do like that there's actual
- 22:46scuffle happening in this brawl, 'cause I'm, I'm all for that.
- 22:54I don't know. I mean, Devers kind of seems to
- 23:02be at the center of a lot of this.
- 23:04And I, I just, I don't know what it is about his, his attitude or
- 23:10his, his mentality. I mean, he, I don't know, I'm on
- 23:14the fence with everything. But if you were to ask me if I
- 23:18would prefer the old way or the new way, I think you know that
- 23:22answer. My first thought you you bring
- 23:28up the the point about Devers. My first thought when I saw
- 23:31this, when I saw freelance reaction was it's very clear to
- 23:39me that playing on the opposite side of the country in the
- 23:44opposite league for pretty much the entirety of Rafael Devers
- 23:49career told me that he's not familiar with his game.
- 23:56As the saying goes, this is what Rafael Devers does.
- 24:02And because of how good he is, he does this a lot.
- 24:06This isn't an infrequent thing. Rafael Devers is good.
- 24:09Breaking news. Rafael Devers is good at hitting
- 24:12a baseball. You just had you Kyle Freeland,
- 24:18just haven't seen the aftermath of it very often because you,
- 24:22like I said, you're on the other side of the country in another
- 24:25league. This is if you're going to be
- 24:29sticking around in Colorado, my friend, I hate to say it, but
- 24:34you're going to you're just going to have to get used to
- 24:35this because he's not going to change.
- 24:37This is just what this is who Raphael Devers is.
- 24:39And and truth be told, watching the home run, I've seen worse.
- 24:45I've seen worse, but I all what I what I did see was no
- 24:52disrespect towards Freeland. This is just Rafael Devers
- 24:55watching his home run. There was no look back to the
- 24:57mound. There was no look back to the
- 24:59Rockies dugout. There was no no glance over
- 25:03anybody on the Rockies defense like it was just him admiring
- 25:08his home run. And I think the frustration just
- 25:11boiled over and it led to this scuffle.
- 25:15So I don't know, like I said it, it, it lends itself to
- 25:21discussing the bigger issue, which again, we've been talking
- 25:24about for years at this point is where's does the, where does the
- 25:28line get drawn for the let the kids play movement?
- 25:31And unfortunately based on this, I don't think we have found, I
- 25:36don't think we've we've landed on a solution for that yet.
- 25:40Never going to go anywhere. Crazy as promised, I want to say
- 25:49it was last episode. I said that I wanted to now that
- 25:54we're in September, a little bit of A at least out here up until
- 25:58probably like 11:00 AM, maybe even noon, there's a little bit
- 26:04of a chill in the air because of that.
- 26:07I wanted to look ahead a little bit to the postseason.
- 26:09That's that's knocking. We're knocking on the door of
- 26:12it. Wanted to do a little look ahead
- 26:17and sort of take into account who's in who currently holds a
- 26:20spot. And you and I talked last last
- 26:25episode as well. I think we're on the same page
- 26:29or right around the same page in believing that who's in the
- 26:34field right now is who will be representing the postseason
- 26:38field as it were come October. So with that said, I want it,
- 26:42like I was saying, we mentioned last episode, I wanted to do a
- 26:46segment where we maybe provide a reason as to why each team that
- 26:52currently holds a postseason spot could win the World Series.
- 26:55It's sort of our way of trying to put a positive twist on
- 27:00things because, you know, we we have a tendency to be overly
- 27:05negative at times. So I thought, you know, let's
- 27:08try to give what, a dozen fan bases maybe something to latch
- 27:14on to for the next month and possibly into October.
- 27:19So with that said, Nate will be representing the American
- 27:23League, which if you're doing the math at home, does mean that
- 27:27he's going to have to say something nice about the Red
- 27:29Sox. So I'm I'm very much looking
- 27:31forward to that, which leaves me with the National League.
- 27:36So how do you want to how you want to do this?
- 27:38You want to alternate. You want to little.
- 27:40Alt. Little Alt.
- 27:42OK, I say you do you want to start it or you want me to?
- 27:49Sure, sure. Where do you how do you want to
- 27:52do this from like? I think I just ranked mine in
- 27:55order. May I have to go back and check?
- 28:00I think I just did it in terms of seating, like I think I got
- 28:05Brewers, Phillies, Dodgers. Yeah, I didn't really do
- 28:08seating, but. That doesn't matter, I just.
- 28:10I can adjust. I just defaulted to that because
- 28:13that's how I I was reading it on the on the standings.
- 28:17Papa can think on his feet. No big deal.
- 28:21Let's start it with the tea Grays, Detroit tea Grays.
- 28:29I don't know how what your approach was to this.
- 28:31So I'm just, I have like some stats, but I also had just have
- 28:36like some, some gut observations, if you will.
- 28:42If you're closer to the Tigers, you probably know more than I
- 28:46do. That's just how it goes.
- 28:49Let me, I'm glad you brought that up.
- 28:51Let me just preface this by saying obviously if you were a
- 28:54fan of one of these teams, you were going to have a more in
- 28:58tune understanding of what's going on at this very moment.
- 29:03However, as we stay on here all the time.
- 29:06Some outside perspective never hurts.
- 29:08Outside perspective never hurts because let's be real, you and I
- 29:14have both canceled our respective team seasons probably
- 29:17multiple times this year, but yet here we are.
- 29:20Here we are. Both teams still kicking as are
- 29:2310 other teams maybe maybe even you know, 11/12/13 that are in
- 29:29the mix. It it's just bear with us.
- 29:35These are these are observations that have been trending, I would
- 29:39imagine for some time now. So don't be a victim of the
- 29:42moment. If you're the Padres, if you're
- 29:44fan of the Padres, for example, who just got swept by the
- 29:47Orioles, don't be prepared to burn it down.
- 29:50OK? Let just hold out hope and let
- 29:53us, let us walk you through. Let us hold your hand.
- 29:56I'm not better. I'm not better than anybody when
- 29:58it comes to that. I'll burn it down immediately.
- 30:02But. Let's let's walk through this
- 30:04together. Yeah.
- 30:07All right. Well, let's start it off in in D
- 30:09town Detroit. I put balanced and deep.
- 30:16That's kind of my observation. They have a winning record at
- 30:21home. They have a winning record on
- 30:23the road. They have a winning record
- 30:26during the day. They have a winning record
- 30:27during the night. One run games, they're 20 and
- 30:319:00. They have a winning record
- 30:33versus righties. Winning record versus lefties.
- 30:37They are only one game under 500 against one division and it's AO
- 30:44W the rest they're above 500 on. They are 5 and 6 in extra inning
- 30:49games. They're top ten in all of Major
- 30:54League Baseball in on the pitching side.
- 30:56Strikeouts, walks, home runs given up, earned runs given up,
- 31:02saves, ERA On the hitting side. They're also top ten in OPS
- 31:08batting average. Home runs, runs, hits, walks on
- 31:13base percentage. They're just balanced.
- 31:17They don't have a ton of holes. They're a very good ball club.
- 31:22That's my observation. That's why I think that they
- 31:26couldn't go on a very deep run because they don't really have
- 31:33too much of an Achilles heel, just a solid ball club.
- 31:38So that's why I feel like they could maybe win it even though
- 31:43they're three and seven in the last 10, because I'm not
- 31:45reactive. Again, yes, thank you.
- 31:49And I could be victims of the moment here.
- 31:50Well, I'm glad you started there because I sort of took the same
- 31:55approach with with my team leading off the National League
- 31:59here, the Milwaukee Brewers. Same approach worded slightly
- 32:05different. My theme for the Milwaukee
- 32:08Brewers here, my one reason that the Milwaukee Brewers could win
- 32:11the World Series is their general dominance, specifically
- 32:18in how it manifests in their record splits, which you already
- 32:21have have utilized as evidence for your Detroit Tigers.
- 32:25However, with the Milwaukee Brewers, who slightly better
- 32:28record than even the Tigers best team in baseball, 40 and 29 on
- 32:35the road. Now why is that important?
- 32:39Because what really matters in the postseason?
- 32:42Home field advantage. So if you're the Milwaukee
- 32:45Brewers making a deep run in October, even if and when you
- 32:50have home field advantage, you are going to have to play on the
- 32:54road. And if you are 40 and 29 on the
- 33:00road, I would feel very at at peace if I'm a Brewers fan and
- 33:09and that time comes that you have to hit the road for an NLCS
- 33:13game or I mean, DSCS, whatever it may be, they're 43 and 30
- 33:18versus teams over 513 games. That's solid.
- 33:25Over teams over 500, both of those by the way, the 40 and 29
- 33:31on the road, the 43 and 30 versus teams over 500, those are
- 33:34both best marks in baseball. And lastly here for the Brewers
- 33:40and looking at their splits, 31 and 19 versus current post
- 33:46season teams. So of the 11 other teams that
- 33:50we're going to discuss or 10 remaining, you know, well, 11 in
- 33:54total, you've already covered one, but eleven other teams here
- 33:57in the mix that we're talking about 31 and 19.
- 34:00Granted, they lost. It was I think they lost one to
- 34:04the Phils and then one to the Jays coming into today.
- 34:09But again, not reactive, not victim of the moment.
- 34:12This is. This is just the overall scope
- 34:14of things. So that's the Brewers all.
- 34:17Right, good deal. Let's head up to the Great White
- 34:21North. Talk about them blue yays.
- 34:26I have one word here. It's pesky.
- 34:31They just refuse to strike out. Tell me more.
- 34:37It's annoying. It's really annoying.
- 34:40They have the second fewest strikeouts in all of baseball.
- 34:45Coming into today. They had 938 strikeouts total as
- 34:49a team. Guess who was in first place?
- 34:52I was going to ask, do you have that by chance?
- 34:53Who is that? I'm the.
- 34:54Royals. Really.
- 34:56At 9:37. So based on how tonight goes,
- 35:02the Jays could go ahead and and go ahead and just make this
- 35:05outdated already. Good to.
- 35:07Slide into first place, they just don't strike out.
- 35:11That was something I noticed the last series that obviously I
- 35:14watched the Yankees a lot. The last series that they face
- 35:16them in Toronto is just they don't help you out with that.
- 35:21And in today's game where that's what you see majority of the
- 35:24time, it's just not there. And one guy that I was like, you
- 35:29know, I wonder if someone if there's like one guy that really
- 35:35stands out and just like everyone else is below average
- 35:38and hides this guy. Not really.
- 35:42Addison Barger is their most, most strikeouts on their team
- 35:46with 106. We're talking about normalizing
- 35:52at least one or two guys on every roster with finishing the
- 35:56season in that 180 to 200 range. No one's even close to that.
- 36:00No one's going to be close to that.
- 36:03In my mind, I don't know why I thought like Vladimir Guerrero,
- 36:06junior, like power hitter, he's got to strike out a lot.
- 36:10No, no, he doesn't. Probably going to finish below
- 36:14100. Yeah, dude, he averages 93 a
- 36:20season. That's his average Vladimir.
- 36:23Guerrero Junior Are we talking about the same guy?
- 36:26Yeah, dude, Crazy, crazy. This this dude savant in
- 36:34strikeout rate better be. They're all just really good at
- 36:42putting the ball in play. It's hanging a.
- 36:44Lot the chart. Like literally off the chart if
- 36:47that's the case. Pull it up again Stats Vladimir
- 36:53Guerrero junior currently has 83 strikeouts this year.
- 36:59In how many games? He has played 133 games.
- 37:06He averages overshot it. He averages 91 strikeouts a
- 37:10year. Just shed a little light on that
- 37:14and like. I I would have never.
- 37:17Guessed Me neither. Me neither.
- 37:20It's impressive. And I know it's not like this
- 37:22crazy thing where you're like, well, are they going to win the
- 37:24World Series? Because that like maybe, maybe
- 37:29if it's a team that refuses to strike out and just it's an
- 37:33entire team buying into that. You look at this entire team,
- 37:37it's nuts. Springer is is at 87 strikeouts,
- 37:43Beau Bichette 89, Barger, Like I said, the leading the crew at
- 37:48only 106, which is like, I don't know, in today's game, nothing.
- 37:53It's just it's very impressive. They lead all of baseball and on
- 37:57base percentage, they lead all of baseball and batting average.
- 38:00They lead all of baseball and hits.
- 38:02This is just a team that puts the ball in play.
- 38:04When you're talking about the postseason, you're talking about
- 38:07trying to find a way to get through these starting
- 38:10rotations, get through these bullpens, especially in the
- 38:13longer series. You're trying to wear this other
- 38:16pitching staff down. This is the this is the recipe.
- 38:20This is how it's done. I'd be excited if I were a Blue
- 38:24Jays fan. Pesciness.
- 38:29I like that. Not bad.
- 38:31Wow, I learned some. I mean, hopefully I learned
- 38:34more, but right off the top here, I'd I'd learned something
- 38:37about Vladimir Guerrero Junior. As did I that's I figured that
- 38:41was a big hole in his game and it is not.
- 38:44Most strikeouts he's ever had. 2022 is an All Star by the way.
- 38:49Finished with 116 yeah, and this isn't like this isn't like.
- 38:56Oh, he must have like missed a lot of other games elsewhere in
- 38:59his career Nope, Since twenty 21161 games 160 games, 156
- 39:05games, 159 games and this year 133 games.
- 39:08It's not for lack of lack of plate appearances.
- 39:12Why that's? I don't know why I'm so.
- 39:14Because you're so. Used to seeing a.
- 39:16Swings all the time, but like it's clear that he just he
- 39:19shortens up, puts the ball the other way, keeps the ball in
- 39:23play. I mean, it's again, if you're
- 39:26not into that and you're and you're just a new age Homer and
- 39:29you're just like, I love, I love Ding dongs, I love strikeouts.
- 39:32That's it. That's my kind of baseball
- 39:35getting good for you. But if you like baseball, it's
- 39:40it's refreshing to see. And when you see an entire team
- 39:42buy into this, it's cool to it's cool to see.
- 39:46So I have respect for the way they go about it.
- 39:52Well, I'm thinking of it. I had the idea earlier.
- 39:56I want you to as we once we finish this, we need to pick a
- 40:00team from the other league that we that our minds were a little
- 40:06changed the most on. OK, I like that.
- 40:09So be thinking about that OK for me.
- 40:12Next up, the Phillies. You might have seen this one
- 40:16coming for me regarding or in in terms of my reason, but it's
- 40:21simple home field advantage, assuming they can hold on to the
- 40:29National League East, you're going to have that home field
- 40:33advantage. You're going to see more of what
- 40:39we've already seen out of the bank and it's it's nothing short
- 40:44of electric. I believe that I still we still
- 40:48we have to get up there for a game.
- 40:50We sure do. But what's going to be what's
- 40:54going to be interesting about this year in particular, I think
- 40:57is buzz surrounding multiple narratives.
- 41:01So the fan, there's going to be a a certain air at Citizens Bank
- 41:06this fall. I do believe some of these
- 41:10narratives include Kyle Schwarber's MVP caliber season.
- 41:16OK. Like, this isn't just like, oh,
- 41:18Schwarber had like a good year. He put up like 3540 homers.
- 41:23This. Is a different a different year
- 41:26for Kyle Schwarber because and as we've also seen, there are a
- 41:31few players in baseball they can put a charge into a ballpark in
- 41:35the post season with a like a a home run than Kyle Schwarber.
- 41:39And like a predictable need it right now kind of way almost
- 41:44more often than not, which is crazy.
- 41:46You're sitting there going, man, how cool would it be if this guy
- 41:50hits a home run? And if it's Kyle Schulberg,
- 41:52chances are it's probably happening.
- 41:53That's that's what we're talking about here.
- 41:57The continued pursuit, obviously, of our sweet young
- 41:59prince's first ring. That's going to, that's all.
- 42:03There's also going to be buzz surrounding that Yohan Duran's
- 42:09arrival for the Phillies, the closer entrance, all of all of
- 42:15what that entails going to be another layer to this.
- 42:20I think there's going to be a rallying around the absence of
- 42:24Zach Wheeler. I think it's going to be a hey,
- 42:26let's let's go out and win one for Zach, especially given I say
- 42:30given the year he's had, he had it's it's copy and paste.
- 42:33I feel like for Zach Wheeler almost every year.
- 42:35So that's not necessarily different, but obviously not
- 42:37having him for this post season run.
- 42:41I think there's going to be some rallying around that.
- 42:43Another thing and what is my final point to this home field
- 42:47advantage for the Phillies? 35 come from behind wins this
- 42:51year in baseball, which is 6 most in in all of baseball.
- 42:56So it's only going to further add to the buzz, add to the home
- 43:00field advantage, because if you're a fan, the expectation
- 43:06that a wins never really out of the question, only adds to their
- 43:11engagement, their involvement in the game that's before them.
- 43:14So we, we talk about the bank and the postseason all the time,
- 43:17but it's, it's worth, it's worth reiterating as we embark upon
- 43:21yet another postseason at the bank.
- 43:23Very good, very good, very very good.
- 43:28Also, I may have a little bias here, but I mentioned this
- 43:32before the deadline because I don't know if anyone has kept
- 43:36track of this, but I like Harrison Bader and he's a vibes
- 43:41guy and I'm just letting you know he shows up in the
- 43:45postseason and there's a little electric factory going on.
- 43:49He's got that thing and he's got a nice mullet going right now.
- 43:55Like a deep, deep curly mullet going.
- 43:59Well meant regarding vibes. The only thing that I'm missing
- 44:04from this red October picture for the Phillies is I feel like
- 44:10there's some some something's off between Cassianos and and
- 44:17Philly. Rob I I don't like that.
- 44:19I'm going to need them to sit down over a cold one.
- 44:23Work this out this. Is what happens.
- 44:24We got a bunch of vets, you know, it's this doesn't take the
- 44:28limelight, you know what I mean? This doesn't doesn't change the
- 44:31narrative of what's going on there.
- 44:34It's all One Direction. I'm.
- 44:35Going to need them to iron that out.
- 44:37All right, fair enough. Hit the ground running.
- 44:40All right, well, I'm going to kind of just get this one out of
- 44:42the way. It's somewhat of a layup.
- 44:45I'm going to slide down to Texas and talk about the Houston
- 44:49Astros. This one's smacking your right
- 44:52in the face. Why would they win?
- 44:54Because that's what they do. They have experience.
- 44:57It's pretty straightforward when you have a lot of guys that know
- 45:02what to do in those big moments. They don't shy away from it.
- 45:05I know it's annoying. I know we're sick of.
- 45:07It go ahead. Sorry, just calling a quick,
- 45:11quick T here real quick a wild way to preface your bit about
- 45:17the Astros here. I don't know if you even realize
- 45:19what you just said. You know, just hit you just hit
- 45:21you square in the face. It seems like a little, well,
- 45:26too soon. Whoops.
- 45:28That's just an observation. Anyway, continue.
- 45:30Whoops. That's it, man.
- 45:32It's just experience. Altuve 105 postseason games.
- 45:37Correa 85 postseason games Jordan 60 Jeremy Pena 26
- 45:44Christian Walker Be the first one as an Astro, but he's got 17
- 45:48under his belt. Aforementioned for Amber Valdez,
- 45:5117 postseason starts. They just have a lot of guys
- 45:55that have been there and done that, and you've got this young
- 45:59group that's kind of going along with them that it's going to be
- 46:03their first ride. I'm not going to sit here and
- 46:06say that like, this is better than past Astros teams, but I
- 46:12just think that like, don't necessarily count them out
- 46:15because they're just used to doing this.
- 46:18They're used to winning and having the experience in those
- 46:21moments does play a factor. In a world where we're so in
- 46:26love with analytics, the heartbeat of a player that's
- 46:30been there, done that means something.
- 46:33And they got a few of them. So no, it's a little bit of a
- 46:37layup, but that's what I'm going with.
- 46:42Next up for me, Los Angeles Dodgers and my reason that they
- 46:48could win it all is that their offense can cover their holes in
- 46:54their pitching. They're very, very obvious holes
- 46:57that they have when it comes to pitching.
- 47:02Believe it or not, Nate, this was news to me.
- 47:06Even Dodgers still with down years from a few of their stars
- 47:12for their standards, still a top three offense in baseball. 3rd
- 47:17in runs scored, third in OPS, second in homers, second in
- 47:23walks. And you think wow, they just got
- 47:26big boppers. It's not just that Nate.
- 47:29They're 6th even an average. If that's if that's your metric
- 47:32of choice, they can still hit for average. 6th best team
- 47:37average in baseball. It's Shohei and then everyone
- 47:42else as we know, but I I bet you didn't know that Will Smith is
- 47:47having a heck of a year 17 bops. He's hitting.
- 47:54He's he's accumulated 4 1/2 war already to show his 5.6 Mookie
- 48:03Betts has started to turn a corner.
- 48:05I think I, I think I was, I think I saw that his August was
- 48:11the best month of the season for him so far, which is saying a
- 48:15lot because you have to take into account the very, very
- 48:18sluggish start that he had and really sluggish year all
- 48:20together. It just hasn't been a great year
- 48:22for Mookie. However, turning a little bit of
- 48:24a corner in August, Dodgers can only hope that it carries that
- 48:28momentum carries in the September.
- 48:29But if you can get him back, Freddie Freeman, who was
- 48:32actually the last standing representative in the National
- 48:37League of of hitters that were at 300 or or higher for average.
- 48:43Think he just dip dip down but little bit of a down year for
- 48:49Freddy. But.
- 48:53But but my point is, is even with these down years, they're
- 48:57still a top three offense in baseball.
- 48:59So once the bright lights turn on, and a lot of these guys who
- 49:03to your point about the Astros, a lot of these guys obviously
- 49:09have post season experience, once those bright lights turn
- 49:11on, if they're able to step into their former selves, if they're
- 49:17having a down year, a top three offense is going to get a lot
- 49:21better. Yeah.
- 49:22And you talk about some of those guys that have down years, like
- 49:24there's something to when you look at the scoreboard and it
- 49:27just resets and it's just a clean slate in a way.
- 49:32And there's guys that know how to lock in.
- 49:33So per use, let's be nervous about them.
- 49:40All right? Where are we at as far as
- 49:42rankings go? So I got all the current
- 49:45division leaders going right now.
- 49:48I guess we'll pop over to the Yankees, even though they're
- 49:54tied with the Red Sox as far as games back, there's a slight
- 50:00difference in win percentage, so we'll just go there.
- 50:04Another obvious 1. I don't know if I'm going to
- 50:06change anybody's mind but their offense, that's why.
- 50:12Probably why they'd win. Stan just hit one over the train
- 50:15tracks in Houston. So, yeah, probably good, good
- 50:17timing for that. Yeah, dude, this is again kind
- 50:21of similar to the Dodgers. It's just like that kind of hole
- 50:24that kind of covers up some holes when you can just bludgeon
- 50:28teams. They have 22 games this year
- 50:32where they've scored ten or more runs.
- 50:37Well, I'm going to pull out some stats and it's all of baseball.
- 50:40It's not just AL. They are first in OPS, home
- 50:44runs, runs and slugging. They are first in all of
- 50:50baseball and walk percentage with 10.1.
- 50:54The next closest in the American League is Seattle with 8.8.
- 51:02They currently have five guys with 20 or more home runs and
- 51:08there's three of them knocking on the door.
- 51:12Volpe with 19, Wells with 19 and Stanton was at 17 before
- 51:17tonight. He is now at 18.
- 51:19So there's a good chance that that lineups going to finish
- 51:21with eight guys with 20 or more home runs this season.
- 51:30There's a lot to like about the offense.
- 51:34It can get cold, but it can very, very, very much get hot
- 51:40and hotter than pretty much any other offense in baseball.
- 51:43So that's going to be the deciding factor is will they be
- 51:49cold or will they be hot? And I'm here to live and die by
- 51:54the sword. The Chicago Cubs, similar to
- 52:05your take on the Tigers, I'm taking the same approach with
- 52:10the Cubs. They're well balanced and they
- 52:14have depth. Not to the same degree, I would
- 52:19say, as the Tigers. Tigers I think are a noticeably
- 52:23better team, but they're doing it on both sides of the ball.
- 52:29Top ten in all of baseball and run scored so the production is
- 52:33there and also top ten in baseball and runs allowed from
- 52:41the the positive side. Obviously.
- 52:43Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. They're not just, they're not
- 52:47just run up the scoreboard. That's not what I'm saying.
- 52:52Even with even with a significantly cooled off, PCAI
- 53:03read today that the Cubs have 5 hitters with at least 3 1/2 B
- 53:07WAR. So it's not that you it's not
- 53:10like while the sky is falling, PCA has cooled off.
- 53:13It's not well, Kyle Tucker has not been the guy we thought he'd
- 53:17be. It's not the case at all.
- 53:21They're having, they're having pedestrian well at at this point
- 53:27in time right now playing at a somewhat pedestrian level.
- 53:31Kyle Tucker, as we've talked about, has picked it up, but not
- 53:35the PCA is not on the tear that he was to start the year.
- 53:38Kyle Tucker is not on the tear that he was on prior to get into
- 53:44Chicago, But Michael Bush, Dansby Swanson, Nico Horner are
- 53:50all holding it down. So you don't have, if you're
- 53:52the, if you're a Cubs fan, you don't have to look at just one
- 53:55guy and say, well, this is how we're going to live and die.
- 53:57You you're able to spread the wealth a little bit.
- 53:59You've got, you've got depth there.
- 54:01You've got multiple players contributing to the overall
- 54:07effort and you don't have to rely on a Kyle Tucker to go 3
- 54:12for five with two homers and six RB is on the night to win games.
- 54:16You can you're you're like I said, you're top ten and run
- 54:19scored. You're able to produce, you're
- 54:21able to manufacture, you're able to play small ball.
- 54:24So because of that, you can wrestle a little easier and if a
- 54:30guy goes down next man up. This is the kind of team that I
- 54:33feel like is built to do that pretty well.
- 54:35Can't say that for all teams. But if you're the Cubs, I think
- 54:38I think you're OK there. And then, you know, pitching,
- 54:43you're not you're sort of missing like the guy, but you do
- 54:52have depth. If to me, you really, you really
- 54:57want to have you, you really want to go to one of two ways.
- 55:00You either want to have a a 1-2 punch and some guys that can can
- 55:06pick up the slack on the back end, or you just need guys that
- 55:11you can rely on you. You have depth and rotation that
- 55:14can carry you in a longer series.
- 55:16If you're lacking in that 1-2 punch when maybe other teams
- 55:19only have that and nothing else. We'll see how it goes for the
- 55:23Cubs, but being well balanced I think is going to benefit them
- 55:27well should they make a run. Like that all right guy, now
- 55:33it's your time to the Red Sox. I'm going a little bit more
- 55:39specific versus like a team wide thing.
- 55:45I've got two guys in mind. I put the lefty Lasers with Cy
- 55:52Young votes, specifically Geraldus Chapman and Garrett
- 55:56Crochet. Two names, 2 very important
- 56:00pieces when it comes to the postseason.
- 56:05Geraldus Chapman currently sitting at 28 saves.
- 56:08I was looking at numbers over his career.
- 56:10He's literally matching what he was doing 1213 years ago in
- 56:15Cincy. It's kind of insane.
- 56:18In certain categories, better. In certain categories, better
- 56:245.5 K to walk ratio, which is tied for the best in his career.
- 56:28And we all know the ERA is sitting at a flat one right now,
- 56:33which is better than pretty much every other year He's had
- 56:37Garrett Crochet, kind of some obvious stats here 'cause you
- 56:42know, he's recently transitioned in his career to a starter.
- 56:46But career high innings, strikeouts and WAR.
- 56:51And some little Nuggets here. No Red Sox Cy Young winner since
- 56:552016, which was who report saw very good.
- 57:02And the last one to even get a Cy Young vote was native ALDI in
- 57:072021, and he finished fourth in Cy Young votes.
- 57:12So the reason I bring this up is because there's a good chance
- 57:14both guys are going to get Cy Young votes and to have one as
- 57:18your ace and 1 as your closer to really kind of bookend the way a
- 57:23game can go in a postseason, it's pretty impressive.
- 57:27So pretty easy to look at those two and just be like, yeah,
- 57:32these are big reason why you could see that.
- 57:35And for a team that's, you know, witnessed, you know, World
- 57:40Series rings with guys that are willing to, I mean, this you're
- 57:43looking at, well, Chris Sale not too long ago, who is willing to,
- 57:48you know, start games and finish games.
- 57:50And you're looking at, you know, dominant closing, you know, by
- 57:54Kenley Jansen back in the day. And it's just like it.
- 57:56This is this is a lot of the same recipe that you've seen in
- 58:02the Red Sox in the past. So there you go.
- 58:05There's your positive stuff, jerk.
- 58:08Hey, much appreciated, although I think Garrett Crochet
- 58:12unfortunately cost himself any actual chance at a Cy Young with
- 58:17his start yesterday against the guards.
- 58:21Gave up seven I think. Yeah, it's all right.
- 58:25Still get votes. Tough.
- 58:27Oh, get. Votes, I mean Scoobles, it's
- 58:30it's Scoobs man, unfortunately, but.
- 58:34I'm just saying any sliver of a chance that he had, I think is
- 58:37now out the window. You can't can't absorb A7.
- 58:40No votes since 2021 is like, that's kind of crazy.
- 58:45You haven't had a pitcher earn a single vote in the Cy Young
- 58:47category in Four Seasons, so the fact that you're going to have
- 58:52two this year, that's a big deal.
- 58:53To give you a glimpse as to the state of our pitching over the
- 58:57last handful of years, Our Opening Day starter two years
- 59:01ago is now on staff with the team they're currently playing
- 59:05in Corey Kluber. That's kind of just to you know,
- 59:10put it into perspective what what we've been dealing with.
- 59:13Sure, any who's Next up for me, San Diego Padres.
- 59:19Speaking of a staff the and let me just say I'd I know I
- 59:26mentioned it earlier, I don't want Padres fans freaking out.
- 59:29I've seen way too probably honestly more so from Padres
- 59:33fans and any of these other teams that may be outside of the
- 59:35Yankees. A lot of Padres fans calling to
- 59:39burn it down, saying we can't hit, we can't throw.
- 59:44Relax. OK, you have to look at the
- 59:50season in its entirety. Sure, how you how you've played
- 59:54recently matters, but we talk all you and I talk about this
- 59:58all the time. You honestly more than me, but
- 1:00:00you talk about the importance of stacking wins.
- 1:00:03You know, padding, I hate to say it, padding stats because
- 1:00:07there's going to be ups and downs.
- 1:00:09So Padres have obviously been dealt a handful of downs as well
- 1:00:14as UPS. With that said, though, 4th best
- 1:00:17team ERA in baseball. And if you're going, OK, that's
- 1:00:20great. But that was a lot of.
- 1:00:21The first half of the season that may be true, but since the
- 1:00:26trade deadline they had the 8th best team ERA.
- 1:00:32Not to mention you're also getting Michael King back within
- 1:00:34the week. Not to mention you have the best
- 1:00:38bullpen in baseball sitting at a three O 9.
- 1:00:42You already had a great bullpen and they got better at the
- 1:00:46deadline. Sure.
- 1:00:48So no need to panic. And just as a little cherry on
- 1:00:52top, I saw Mason Miller out of the pen today.
- 1:00:54Had an Immaculate ending on nothing but sliders. 9 sliders.
- 1:01:049 sliders. All right.
- 1:01:07That sounds like a heck of a of a dinner, if we're being honest.
- 1:01:11It does. I could go for that.
- 1:01:15What kind of slider? Just a straight up?
- 1:01:16Would you just go straight up? Yeah, I mean, if you're trying
- 1:01:21to make 9 sliders work, I don't think you can get too too
- 1:01:24carried away, you know? When you hit me with those,
- 1:01:26those Buffalo chicken sliders, that's nice.
- 1:01:32That's a nice touch. I already ate so I'm I'm going.
- 1:01:40To make spaghetti after this. Not sliders unfortunately.
- 1:01:46What do you got? I'm up.
- 1:01:51Think we got? One left, yeah, round her out
- 1:01:55with the with the Mariners. Look, this kind of a, it's kind
- 1:01:59of a weak take. This ain't very spicy.
- 1:02:01It's their rotation. I've mentioned it coming into
- 1:02:04the season. I'm mentioning it all the time.
- 1:02:09It's insanely deep. And maybe not one of them
- 1:02:13particularly is having like a dominant season, but when you
- 1:02:18run down the list and you're in the other dugout and you're
- 1:02:22like, I got to deal with this guy tomorrow and then this guy
- 1:02:25the next day and then this guy the next day, it's tough.
- 1:02:29Brian Wu, Luis Castillo, George Kirby, Logan Gilbert, all sub 4
- 1:02:35eras this year, by the way. So it's not like they're having
- 1:02:39a ton of clunkers. Sure, not going to see any Cy
- 1:02:43Young's out of this group. But the truth is, this is what
- 1:02:49wins series. This is what shows up in the
- 1:02:52postseason. Kind of have it on the back end
- 1:02:57too. So this is not a team I would be
- 1:03:03excited to face. And if they managed to sneak out
- 1:03:08the division, I'd be really scared of them.
- 1:03:10But if they managed to get out of the wild card round and get
- 1:03:14into the DS and we get into these longer series, this
- 1:03:20rotation, I'm going to go ahead and guess is going to outlast
- 1:03:24most rotations. Which goes back to the point I
- 1:03:28said where if you're a team you, you'd really hope for one of two
- 1:03:32options. You'd either want a 1-2 punch or
- 1:03:36just some, you know, some guys that can get the job done, but
- 1:03:39you have plenty of those. Seems like the Mariners have the
- 1:03:43best of both worlds where they've got the elite stuff at
- 1:03:46the front end, but it kind of just carries through the
- 1:03:49rotation. There's not, I mean, there's not
- 1:03:51too many weak spots there. So see, to your point, something
- 1:03:56we, I feel like most people are familiar with, but it doesn't
- 1:04:00change the fact how good it is and how, how beneficial that's
- 1:04:03going to be in October. So.
- 1:04:05Just not interested in facing them.
- 1:04:13But big dumper better start hitting if he wants to win MVP.
- 1:04:18Yeah. How'd you get that in there?
- 1:04:22It's been a while. That seems like a shot.
- 1:04:27Yeah. Seems like an unnecessary shot.
- 1:04:33Yeah. Speaking of shots, look, you
- 1:04:38know, I, I said we're, this is supposed to be a positive
- 1:04:40segment. I, it's, I'm going to be, I'm
- 1:04:43going to be positive here. I'm going to I, I, I had to look
- 1:04:47man, and I'll be honest with you, it, it, it took me a while
- 1:04:50and the only real place I could, I could arrive at was the
- 1:04:57potential boosts. Well, I won't say potential more
- 1:05:03so for one of these guys than the other, because one of them
- 1:05:05has already sort of established himself in the early going here.
- 1:05:09But for the Mets, it's the rookie arms and Nolan McClain
- 1:05:19and Jonah Tong. Look, they're rotate.
- 1:05:22I'm just going to call it like it is.
- 1:05:25The Mets rotation sucks. Atrocious, hideous.
- 1:05:33Fill in whatever synonym you want.
- 1:05:35Whatever descriptor you want, it's bad since the All Star
- 1:05:40break. Kodai Senga 656 ERA.
- 1:05:46David Peterson five O 2 ERA. Sean Manaya 583 ERA.
- 1:05:54Their rotation sucks and look Nolan McClain.
- 1:06:01I I had him. In the I had him in the segment
- 1:06:04later on, but you know, well, let's just talk about it right
- 1:06:06now on the year 4 and O28 KS with an ERA of 137 and a .776
- 1:06:16whip. Sheesh.
- 1:06:20He's dealing. And he's.
- 1:06:24Do the. Teams, he started.
- 1:06:27Against the Mariners. The Braves, the Phillies and the
- 1:06:32Tigers. Real deal.
- 1:06:36He's dealing. According to Optus.
- 1:06:38Stats the second MLB. Pitcher to go 4.
- 1:06:43And O with a sub 15 and 25 plus strikeouts over his first four
- 1:06:47career starts since ERA. Became an official in both
- 1:06:51leagues in 19. 13 The other was Fernando Valenzuela in 1981.
- 1:06:58You're. Going to need.
- 1:07:00That help? You're also going to need help
- 1:07:03from Jonah Tong. If Jonah Tong can prove that, he
- 1:07:06is something worth carrying on a postseason rotation, which I
- 1:07:14don't think the Mets have anything to lose.
- 1:07:15They don't have many. Choices to go with either.
- 1:07:18I just I heard today that they're talking about putting
- 1:07:20Kodai Singh on a on a minor league assignment.
- 1:07:24So if that's what we're doing, I don't really think you got many
- 1:07:26options to work with here. So Jonah Tong very much could be
- 1:07:30a big part of this post season run should they go on one.
- 1:07:34But had a good debut against the Marlins, went five innings, gave
- 1:07:38up just six hits, one earned. And if you're counting at home?
- 1:07:44As a 15 point pay in. Fantasy.
- 1:07:46I did pick him up for his debut just to see, you know, what
- 1:07:49we're working with. And, you know, I was pleasantly
- 1:07:51surprised. So going up against the Reds on
- 1:07:54Friday and his next start. So we'll get a a taste of, you
- 1:07:58know, post season esque caliber baseball.
- 1:08:02You know, the Reds are knocking on the door.
- 1:08:03So we'll see what what Jonah Jonathan can do on the road in
- 1:08:08that ballpark. I think we'll learn a lot there.
- 1:08:11But yeah, if if the Mets are going to make a go at this thing
- 1:08:15they're going to need, they're going to require some heavy
- 1:08:19lifting from their rookies on the bump.
- 1:08:22Very good, very good. I was just looking.
- 1:08:27George Kirby gave up a fart start.
- 1:08:29Tonight, yeah, but still, you know, points.
- 1:08:38I'm not reactionary. No, you're not reactionary, but.
- 1:08:43Maybe you change your mind on one of these teams, or maybe you
- 1:08:47were influenced on one of these teams.
- 1:08:49Yeah. Could I?
- 1:08:51Something stood out for me. And I, I think it was starting
- 1:08:56the shift before this episode, but I think it really has
- 1:09:00shifted now. Was that like, is the Brew crew
- 1:09:04ever really like going to do their thing come post season
- 1:09:09time? And I started to have a new
- 1:09:12mindset. But like, once you were talking
- 1:09:13about how they are against teams over 500, like they just, they
- 1:09:18beat good teams. It's hard to go against that
- 1:09:22man. And I, I freaking love Pat
- 1:09:26Murphy. Like I think he's got to be the
- 1:09:29coolest manager. And I, I like that.
- 1:09:34Like, you know, he's ASU guy from over here.
- 1:09:37I just, I, I like what the Brewers are cooking up.
- 1:09:40And for the first time, pancakes.
- 1:09:42Actually let's let's go ahead and say ever in the history of
- 1:09:45this podcast that Nate would be in on the Brewers.
- 1:09:50So wow. Yeah.
- 1:09:53So I appreciate the assist on that.
- 1:09:55Well, maybe you. Maybe you were a pro Brewers guy
- 1:10:00when it came time for the post season last year and they're
- 1:10:02going up against the Mets, but maybe that was more by default.
- 1:10:05Yeah, that's by default. Possibly.
- 1:10:08Stupid Devin Williams should have known then.
- 1:10:12You know. Should have seen the signs.
- 1:10:15There's red flags everywhere. Anyway that changed your mind on
- 1:10:19anybody? Well, I feel like I kind of
- 1:10:22cheated. Because it made me think of it
- 1:10:27right after you. Were done talking about them,
- 1:10:29but the blue. Jays talking about the
- 1:10:31scrappiness of the Blue Jays talk and and you brought up a
- 1:10:34great point about wearing down these arms in crucial postseason
- 1:10:42Indians if you can chip away at that get into their bullpen as
- 1:10:46early as you can that's. Invaluable.
- 1:10:51And if these numbers. That you're sharing with me are
- 1:10:53factual and I I believe that they are.
- 1:10:56It's been a lot of time then. I'm.
- 1:11:00I'm I've got no other choice but to you know, I'll, I'll say it.
- 1:11:05I've already eaten crow on this for my take about the Blue Jays
- 1:11:07earlier this year. But I'll just go ahead and say
- 1:11:09it. I'm, I'm excited to watch the
- 1:11:142025 Blue Jays in the postseason.
- 1:11:17Yeah. I said it.
- 1:11:21Are we growing? Are.
- 1:11:22We growing is that growth, growth Juan Soto.
- 1:11:33I didn't have AI. Didn't have a a segue there, so
- 1:11:36I just jumped right into it. Juan Soto over it coming into
- 1:11:40today, Wednesday, Juan Soto hitting 316, seven homers, 20
- 1:11:48ribs and an OPS at 12:13 from Gingrich Sports on Twitter.
- 1:11:55If Juan Soto gets to 40 homers, 30 swipes, 100 RB is this year,
- 1:12:00it would be one of the most complete seasons since 2040.
- 1:12:04Homers, 30 swipes, 100 RB is 100 runs and a hundred walks has not
- 1:12:10been done this century. The only time it's happened
- 1:12:13Bonds in 96 and 97, Bagwell in 97 and 99, and we were talking
- 1:12:21about him. Having a down year.
- 1:12:24For his. Standards.
- 1:12:26I know that's. Just crazy.
- 1:12:27I had no idea he was. Sniffing 30 swipes.
- 1:12:34So sort of bigger picture and for those Mets.
- 1:12:36Fans that are like why? How is Juan Soto not the reason
- 1:12:40that the Mets would would go on to win it all?
- 1:12:44Juan. Soto's Juan Soto we you.
- 1:12:47Know, I I was trying to look elsewhere to see like, OK, like
- 1:12:51where else can we look for some, some positivity to latch on to?
- 1:12:56You're a Mets fan. And that would I've found that
- 1:12:58in the arms of your rookies. But if, if Juan Soto keeps it
- 1:13:02up, he's going to he'll, he'll shine once again in the post
- 1:13:07season. I have no doubt.
- 1:13:09But yeah, just want to give a little, little credit to the
- 1:13:13kid. Another name.
- 1:13:15That's already been mentioned on this program.
- 1:13:20George, Herman, Ruth. No, George Springer.
- 1:13:26Honestly kind of the same as of late it seems.
- 1:13:29George Springer over the last two weeks hitting 412, seven
- 1:13:34homers. He actually homered tonight
- 1:13:37before we hopped on. So throw this out the window.
- 1:13:40Let's let's call it 8 homers. Well, let me finish the line
- 1:13:45here coming into the day. 7 homers, 12 ribs, 1363 OPS over
- 1:13:50the last two weeks. Wait, that 412?
- 1:13:51Really. Six out his last 45 games.
- 1:13:58Coming into the day, 66 hits according to opposite.
- 1:14:01Sets 66 hits, fifty runs scored, 39 RBIs, 16 homers, 9 swipes.
- 1:14:07The only other get this the only other.
- 1:14:11MLB players to reach all of those.
- 1:14:13Numbers over a 45 game span in a single season are George Herman,
- 1:14:18Ruth in 1920 and Lou Gehrig in 1931.
- 1:14:23It's good company. It's good.
- 1:14:26Company. It's crazy not.
- 1:14:28To mention just having a a. Career year in general.
- 1:14:33That's what I'm saying bro. Saw saw a tweet.
- 1:14:35From MLB Network, he's in his. 12th year in the big leagues,
- 1:14:39his three O 5 average. Career best 26.
- 1:14:42Again, coming in today. 26 homers, 4th most in his career,
- 1:14:45396 on base career best, 550 slug, third best in his career,
- 1:14:5016 swipes, tied for second most in his career.
- 1:14:53The Scrappy Bunch. Sure is.
- 1:14:57Dear. Lord man, it's so annoying.
- 1:15:02I hate him. Oh, that plate, Rodgers and is
- 1:15:07going to be. Popping dude, it is going to be
- 1:15:11popping all right, I know you you need to you need to you need
- 1:15:17to get horizontal. So let's let's wrap this thing
- 1:15:19up. You got anything else for the
- 1:15:20folks That was good. That was fun way to bring the
- 1:15:22number exercise. Thank you.
- 1:15:24Thank you did. Did some research, Shout out
- 1:15:28work for taking the hit today while I did that research, that
- 1:15:36also my stats are now outdated. The Yankees now have six guys to
- 1:15:44have 20 or more home runs in their in their lineup this year.
- 1:15:49Austin Wallace just went yard. So how about that?
- 1:15:52Yeah, other than that. I'm going to go make some
- 1:15:56spaghetti and lay. Down a dream, honestly.
- 1:16:01Yeah, Yep, that's what I do. See ya.
- 1:16:08Oh, real quick, real quick. Just keep an eye out.
- 1:16:11We had a little interview with a special guest recently.
- 1:16:15This is our first mention of that publicly.
- 1:16:17So keep an eye out. I don't know.
- 1:16:19I don't know when we're going to drop it.
- 1:16:21Whatever feels right when when you're thinking.
- 1:16:24I don't. Know, we'll see.
- 1:16:27We'll see. I just drop it from the clouds.
- 1:16:28Who knows, we'll see. Might just wake up one day, say.
- 1:16:31Today's the day clouds. But keep an eye out for that
- 1:16:34bonus pod. It's a good one.
