- 0:01Good morning, everyone. Welcome back to unlocking the
- 0:03Paradigm portal. My name is Sarah.
- 0:06Inside of you there is a bonfire.
- 0:08There always has been. And it was burning before you
- 0:11knew what to call it. Before anyone told you what you
- 0:14were supposed to do with it. Before the world got its hands
- 0:17on it and started deciding whether it was appropriate or
- 0:20practical or too much. In your one job, your actual one
- 0:25job in this life, is to keep it lit.
- 0:28And you do that by doing the things you love, the things that
- 0:31bring you joy, the things that make the world go quiet when
- 0:34something more real is happening inside it.
- 0:37Every time you do those things, you throw another log on the
- 0:39fire. And every time you stop, every
- 0:43time you trade the fire for the should and the have to and the
- 0:45what will people think? The flames burned down a little.
- 0:50And if you've been trading long enough, if the shoulds have been
- 0:53winning for years, you don't have a bonfire anymore.
- 0:57You have embers. They're still alive.
- 0:59They're still there, but so small and so quiet that you've
- 1:03probably started to wonder if the fire is just gone.
- 1:07It isn't. But something has been
- 1:09systematically smothering it. And today we're going to name
- 1:13exactly what that looks like, because you might not even
- 1:15realize it's happening. So if you caught Sunday's
- 1:18episode, you heard me talk about the battle between the adult
- 1:21brain and the part of us that actually knows how to do the
- 1:24thing. That battle, that's this.
- 1:27That's the unworthy wound shutting down the fire.
- 1:31And here's what it looks like on a regular old Monday morning.
- 1:34Not a dramatic breakdown, just a regular day.
- 1:38You're exhausted. Not the kind of exhausted that
- 1:41sleep fixes the bone deep behind the eyes.
- 1:45I don't remember the last time I felt rested, kind.
- 1:48And you keep pushing through it because stopping feels like
- 1:51falling behind. Because rest has to be earned.
- 1:55Because there is always, always something else on the list
- 1:58first. Your brain won't turn off.
- 2:01You lie down and instead of rest, you get a highlight reel
- 2:05of everything you should have done differently, everything
- 2:07coming up, excuse me, that could go wrong.
- 2:11Every conversation you need to have, every decision you haven't
- 2:15made yet. You're not thinking, you're
- 2:17spinning. And you call it being
- 2:20productive, but really, your nervous system is so wired from
- 2:23performing all day that it doesn't know how to stop.
- 2:28And your schedule is full. Not because your life is full,
- 2:31because empty space makes you uncomfortable and an open
- 2:35afternoon feels like a problem to be solved.
- 2:37So you feel it. You keep filling it.
- 2:40And then you wonder why you feel like you're always running but
- 2:42never actually getting anywhere. You take a day off and spend
- 2:47half of it feeling guilty. You call it a lazy day, like
- 2:50that's a bad thing, like rest is something you have to apologize
- 2:54for, like your body asking for a break is an inconvenience rather
- 2:59than a signal worth listening to.
- 3:01Or, and this one is sneaky because it looks like strength.
- 3:06You wear the not stopping like a badge of honor, and you pride
- 3:10yourself on how you can how much you can take on and how little
- 3:14you need and how you just keep going no matter what.
- 3:18And you say things like I'll sleep when I'm dead, ha ha ha
- 3:21ha. But it's not funny.
- 3:24It's the wound dressed up as resilience.
- 3:26And then there's this one, the one nobody talks about because
- 3:29it looks so normal. You accomplish something.
- 3:33And instead of just feeling proud, like genuinely, quietly,
- 3:37privately proud, you need to share it.
- 3:39Not to celebrate, to be told it counts, to get the external
- 3:43confirmation that yes, that was enough, Yes, you are enough.
- 3:47Yes, you have earned your place today.
- 3:50That's not pride. That's the wound asking to be
- 3:53filled from the outside because it never learned how to fill
- 3:56from the inside. Now, every single one of those
- 3:59things is a bucket of water on your fire.
- 4:03And here's what's underneath all of it.
- 4:04The part that nobody tells you. That's not you.
- 4:08That's the adult brain, the worthy wound built to replace
- 4:11the part of you that actually knew how to tend the fire.
- 4:15So think about who you were before any of this needed to
- 4:18exist. You might not remember.
- 4:20That's OK. Before you learned that rest had
- 4:24to be earned. Before you learned that joy
- 4:27needed to justify itself. Before someone, a parent, a
- 4:30teacher, a system, a culture handed you the measuring stick
- 4:34and you picked it up and never put it down.
- 4:37There was a version of you that didn't need a self-care routine
- 4:41and didn't need a framework or a five step plan or a podcast
- 4:44episode telling them how to feel alive.
- 4:47They just followed what lit them up and then did it again.
- 4:51They didn't earn rest, they just rested when they were tired.
- 4:54They didn't justify joy, they just followed it.
- 4:58They didn't perform their accomplishments for a committee.
- 5:01They ran up to show you what they made because they were so
- 5:04proud. And that was the whole reason.
- 5:06No validation required, no measuring stick insight.
- 5:11And they threw logs on the fire instinctively, because nobody
- 5:14had told them yet that the fire needed to earn its right to
- 5:18burn. That's not a younger, more
- 5:20naive, less developed version of you that you left behind when
- 5:24you grew up. That is a part of you that still
- 5:27knows. The part that has been sitting
- 5:29quietly under every exhausting, overanalyzed, guilt soaked badge
- 5:35of Honor day, waiting for you to remember that they're there.
- 5:39That part of you didn't disappear when the wound took
- 5:42over. It went underground.
- 5:44It found the smallest, safest corner it could, and it waited.
- 5:49That part of you is the fire tender it always was.
- 5:54And the embers are still there because it never stopped
- 5:57watching over them. So how do you get back to that
- 6:01little kid inside of you? How do you reconnect with the
- 6:04part of you that knew how to tend the fire before anyone told
- 6:07them that they were wrong? You start by asking a question
- 6:11you probably haven't asked yourself in a very long time.
- 6:14What would I do today if nothing had to be productive, If nothing
- 6:19had to be earned, If I had 0 obligations and 0 audience and
- 6:25the only measure of a good day was how alive I felt in it?
- 6:30And I want you to notice what happens in your body when you
- 6:32ask that, because one of two things is going to happen, most
- 6:35likely. Either something comes up
- 6:38immediately, a thing, a specific thing, something you used to do
- 6:42or always wanted to do or stop doing so long ago you'd almost
- 6:46forgotten. And the second it surfaces,
- 6:50there's a flicker, A warmth, something moves.
- 6:54That's not nostalgia, that's the ember recognizing its own name
- 6:57being called. That's that child inside of you
- 7:01telling you where to look. Or nothing may come up.
- 7:07The question lands and there's just blankness, maybe a little
- 7:11anxiety, maybe the immediate impulse to turn it into a task,
- 7:15to make a list, to figure out the right answer.
- 7:18That blankness is also information.
- 7:21It means the wound has been running the show for so long
- 7:25that that child has gone very quiet.
- 7:28The fire is down to embers, and the adult brain that took over
- 7:32doesn't know how to answer a question that has nothing to do
- 7:35with productivity or performance.
- 7:38And if that's you, don't panic. Don't make it another thing to
- 7:42fix. Just get curious.
- 7:44And again, if you listen to Sunday's episode, this is what I
- 7:48was talking about years ago when my daughter asked me to tell her
- 7:52a story and it felt like running into a wall.
- 7:56And then just this past week it felt like the fire suddenly
- 8:00blowing up huge because I realized what I wanted to do and
- 8:05that kiddo took over. So ask yourself, when is the
- 8:10last time I lost track of time? Not from scrolling, not from
- 8:14distraction, but because I was so completely inside something
- 8:18that the world just fell away. What was I doing?
- 8:22Even if it was years ago, even if it feels small or silly or
- 8:26impractical, that moment is a thread.
- 8:29Pull it and ask yourself, what did I love before I learned I
- 8:35wasn't supposed to love it so much?
- 8:38What did I do as a kid that I stopped doing because I grew up
- 8:42and growing up apparently meant trading the fire for the
- 8:45schedule? And then ask yourself, what's
- 8:50the thing I keep almost doing and then talking myself out of
- 8:55the thing that keeps coming back, no matter how many times I
- 8:57dismiss it. That thing is that child
- 9:00knocking. That's the fire trying to catch.
- 9:04And when you find it, even a flicker of it, even just the
- 9:08memory of it, you don't evaluate it.
- 9:11You don't ask whether it's practical or whether you're good
- 9:14enough at it or whether it's going anywhere.
- 9:17You just tend it quietly, without announcement, without it
- 9:21needing to produce anything or go anywhere or justify itself to
- 9:25a single person, including you. You get low, You cup your hands
- 9:31around what's left, and you blow air on it gently.
- 9:35You know, like you do at a campfire when it's burned down
- 9:37and you want to bring it back. You don't panic, you don't pour
- 9:41accelerant on it. Well, some people do.
- 9:44You just get close and you breathe life back into it
- 9:47slowly, and you watch what catches.
- 9:50That part of you knows how to do the rest.
- 9:52It always did. Your job is just to stop
- 9:56smothering what it's been keeping alive.
- 10:01So the exhaustion, the overthinking, the pack schedule,
- 10:04the guilt on the day off, the badge of honor around never
- 10:08stopping, the accomplishment you shared because you needed
- 10:11someone to tell you it counted. That's not who you are.
- 10:15That's what the unworthy wound built when it pushed the fire
- 10:18tender underground and told the adult brain to take over.
- 10:22That part of you is still in there, watching the embers,
- 10:25waiting for you to come back and remember that the fire was never
- 10:29supposed to earn its right to burn.
- 10:31It was just supposed to burn. So this week we're going to get
- 10:36back to that child 1 wound at a time, 1 ember at a time.
- 10:40We're going to take everything that we've excavated over weeks
- 10:43and months about all the wounding.
- 10:46And rather than living in the wounding or analyzing it, we're
- 10:50going to see where it shut down that child inside of you to give
- 10:54you some ideas of how to start bringing it back.
- 10:57So tend your fire like your life depends on it, because it does.
- 11:02And I'll be back Wednesday and we're going to do the unlovable
- 11:05wound on that one. So have a beautiful Monday.
