- 0:22SPEAKER_02: Hello, everybody, and welcome back to another episode of the Tortured Fans Department podcast.
- 0:27SPEAKER_02: I am Sean Boyle, and joining me is a recurring guest.
- 0:30SPEAKER_02: It's a special guest.
- 0:31SPEAKER_02: It is our most well-traveled man.
- 0:33SPEAKER_02: It is Mr.
- 0:34SPEAKER_02: Mark Monera.
- 0:35SPEAKER_02: Mark, how are you?
- 0:36SPEAKER_01: Sean, what's going on?
- 0:37SPEAKER_01: It is good to be back.
- 0:38SPEAKER_01: Thank you for having me.
- 0:39SPEAKER_01: And there's a lot to catch up on and to talk about in the world of sports.
- 0:43SPEAKER_01: So really excited to get into it.
- 0:44SPEAKER_01: It's the best time of the year.
- 0:46SPEAKER_02: That is right.
- 0:47SPEAKER_02: There's a lot going on at the moment.
- 0:48SPEAKER_02: Mark, we're happy to have you back stateside, if only for a couple of days.
- 0:52SPEAKER_02: Tell me a little bit about your most recent trip to London and when are you heading back out there again?
- 0:57SPEAKER_01: Was out there for some work meetings over the last few days.
- 1:01SPEAKER_01: It was what Tuesday through Friday?
- 1:04SPEAKER_01: Short little trip back here for a couple days and then back to London for a personal trip to go see the birds at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
- 1:11SPEAKER_01: My first time at Whiteheart Lane.
- 1:14SPEAKER_01: So I am very excited to see it.
- 1:16SPEAKER_01: I've heard great things.
- 1:17SPEAKER_01: And while the work trip was great, really excited to just be back in London to enjoy it as a vacation or take some time off, too.
- 1:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah, what a couple of weeks for you.
- 1:27SPEAKER_02: You're in for a treat seeing the new stadium.
- 1:29SPEAKER_02: The stadium is immaculate.
- 1:31SPEAKER_02: It is going to be by far the highlight of your trip.
- 1:34SPEAKER_02: I'm not so sure what you see on the field will be any good.
- 1:37SPEAKER_02: If it's anything like Tottenham's play in that stadium, it will be dreadful.
- 1:40SPEAKER_02: Hopefully, you get a better result.
- 1:42SPEAKER_02: We'll get to the birds in just a little bit.
- 1:44SPEAKER_02: We've got to do a baseball check-in.
- 1:46SPEAKER_02: We're through the wildcard round.
- 1:48SPEAKER_02: We're deep into the divisional series round of the playoffs.
- 1:52SPEAKER_02: We have to eulogize the Philadelphia Phillies and the end of an era there.
- 1:57SPEAKER_02: We've also got a loaded college football slate to talk about.
- 2:01SPEAKER_02: Kind of a miserable NFL Sunday.
- 2:03SPEAKER_02: It felt like we went back to preseason form with penalties and injuries and things of that nature.
- 2:08SPEAKER_02: We'll dive into that.
- 2:09SPEAKER_02: We'll do some Torture Fans of the Week, and then we have a little bit of did you see this to round out the show.
- 2:13SPEAKER_02: Mark, does that all sound okay with you?
- 2:15SPEAKER_01: Sounds great.
- 2:17SPEAKER_02: Let's start.
- 2:18SPEAKER_02: The tale of this podcast starts on October 1st, which is normally one of the best days of my year.
- 2:23SPEAKER_02: October is the best month of the year for me.
- 2:25SPEAKER_02: I love fall.
- 2:26SPEAKER_02: Like you said, all the sports are going on.
- 2:28SPEAKER_02: We had playoff baseball.
- 2:30SPEAKER_02: And this day I went into it with a ton of optimism.
- 2:32SPEAKER_02: It was last Thursday.
- 2:33SPEAKER_02: We had the Pittsburgh Steelers playing Thursday night football against the Cleveland Browns.
- 2:37SPEAKER_02: We had Caitlin Clark, the Indiana Fever, trying to win a deciding game in their opening series.
- 2:43SPEAKER_02: And we had the Philadelphia Phillies in a win or go-home situation against the Atlanta Braves.
- 2:48SPEAKER_02: Mark, that was a clear as day 0 for three for me.
- 2:52SPEAKER_02: I felt it in my plums as the day progressed.
- 2:55SPEAKER_02: It was just one of those days that wasn't going well.
- 2:56SPEAKER_02: And I'm like, you know what?
- 2:57SPEAKER_02: Tonight's going to be a disaster.
- 2:59SPEAKER_02: And lo and behold, it was.
- 3:01SPEAKER_02: So we'll start in the world of baseball with the Phillies.
- 3:04SPEAKER_02: What went wrong in Philadelphia?
- 3:06SPEAKER_01: Let me start with this.
- 3:07SPEAKER_01: This is an aptly named podcast title for the way you especially, but even I'll go back to like me as a diehard Phillips fan.
- 3:15SPEAKER_01: Like, what a more tortured fan than a Phillies fan.
- 3:18SPEAKER_01: Like game one, the opportunity that we were ahead, couple errors.
- 3:24SPEAKER_01: I saw the other day that uh Derekel actually would have caught the ball, but his thumb slipped out of his glove, which then led it to hit his hand as his glove was flying off.
- 3:32SPEAKER_01: Right?
- 3:33SPEAKER_01: There's that.
- 3:34SPEAKER_01: We have the lead.
- 3:36SPEAKER_01: Austin Riley has sucked all year.
- 3:38SPEAKER_01: Bomb, of course.
- 3:40SPEAKER_01: And then we finally get some hope in an amazing game two.
- 3:43SPEAKER_01: Schwarper Harper, we're getting feelings of 22.
- 3:45SPEAKER_01: It's an absolute roller coaster only to just get blown up in game three in Atlanta.
- 3:50SPEAKER_01: Like it's it does feel like the end of an era.
- 3:52SPEAKER_01: The core is aging.
- 3:54SPEAKER_01: But I will say this.
- 3:55SPEAKER_01: Again, I think also part of being a torture fan is having hope for no reason.
- 4:01SPEAKER_01: After this, whatever lockout is going to happen, I think they're going to expand the postseason, which means more spots for the fight and fills to get in and go make some noise.
- 4:08SPEAKER_01: So um there's just always hope uh as a torture fan.
- 4:12SPEAKER_01: But yeah, it was it was rough to start.
- 4:14SPEAKER_02: Yeah, we hope that this could be a place of equanimity for people who are struggling.
- 4:18SPEAKER_02: You know, the tortured fans, it was aptly named.
- 4:21SPEAKER_02: This this came from years of built-in trauma relating to sports.
- 4:24SPEAKER_02: The Phillies are dead.
- 4:26SPEAKER_02: I do think it is the end of an era.
- 4:28SPEAKER_02: The aging core just feels like at least most of it is going to be blown up and we won't see that iteration of the Philadelphia Phillies back again, which I think is for the best.
- 4:37SPEAKER_02: All that would come from them running it back would be a pretty decent regular season team that we talk ourselves into.
- 4:42SPEAKER_02: If they get hot, that would end up disappointing us once again.
- 4:46SPEAKER_02: So blow it all up, keep the guys that produce in crunch time, the Kyle Schwabers of the world, the Zach Wheelers, for maybe just another season before he retires, but keep the dogs around and get rid of the puppies.
- 4:58SPEAKER_02: We need the clean house there.
- 4:59SPEAKER_02: In baseball, Mark, aside from the Phillies, I sat on this very program a week ago and said, outside of them, I'm rooting for the Cubs, the Red Sox, a couple of other really historic franchises that are easy to get behind.
- 5:11SPEAKER_02: They got wiped down in an embarrassing fashion, even worse than the Phillies did.
- 5:15SPEAKER_02: Now we kind of have in the American League a situation developing where I think we're all rooting against the New York Yankees and kind of hoping for one of these other three teams to emerge.
- 5:25SPEAKER_02: Are you confident at all that they'll be able to do so?
- 5:27SPEAKER_01: I do.
- 5:28SPEAKER_01: I think I love the Tampa Bay Rays, actually.
- 5:30SPEAKER_01: I think they're they're filling out the trap now.
- 5:33SPEAKER_01: And if you haven't been to St.
- 5:34SPEAKER_01: Petersburg, Florida, I will say it's a fantastic city.
- 5:37SPEAKER_01: I don't think the trap does the city justice.
- 5:39SPEAKER_01: People think the trap is a shitty stadium.
- 5:42SPEAKER_01: That area around it is unbelievable.
- 5:44SPEAKER_01: There's this bar called Fergs that you go right outside and hang out at uh before the game.
- 5:48SPEAKER_01: Like, I love St.
- 5:50SPEAKER_01: Pete.
- 5:50SPEAKER_01: I'm all in on the race.
- 5:51SPEAKER_01: And then my second team, give me the Chicago White Sox, Muritaka Murakami.
- 5:56SPEAKER_01: He is Japanese, as he says.
- 5:58SPEAKER_01: Like, that was just an incredible interview.
- 6:00SPEAKER_01: He's on 100.
- 6:02unknown: Yeah.
- 6:02SPEAKER_00: So yeah.
- 6:04SPEAKER_01: They're the feel-good story.
- 6:05SPEAKER_01: Um, I'm rooting for them.
- 6:07SPEAKER_01: Anybody that can take down the Yankees is good, and then who knows what comes out of the NL.
- 6:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I absolutely love Mune Murakame.
- 6:14SPEAKER_02: He is an absolute delight.
- 6:16SPEAKER_02: He was so funny.
- 6:18SPEAKER_02: He just kept saying, I'm drunk, I'm drunk, and repeating how he was Japanese and he's not good at English, but he was great at emphasizing how drunk he was.
- 6:25SPEAKER_02: So that was great.
- 6:26SPEAKER_02: The White Sox are in command in that series.
- 6:28SPEAKER_02: Hopefully they're able to get into the semifinals, which would be pretty crazy considering where the White Sox were just a year ago and how they've been trending.
- 6:38SPEAKER_02: But I guess that's what happens when you play in a shitty division and you have some guys come through that all kind of click at the same time.
- 6:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you gotta get in.
- 6:45SPEAKER_01: I mean, Philly showed it in 2022.
- 6:47SPEAKER_01: We're hoping they would do it this year, but it it's it's very evident in Major League Baseball.
- 6:52SPEAKER_01: Like, if you get hot, you can you can make some noise.
- 6:56SPEAKER_01: And I think the White Sox, the team, is doing that this year.
- 6:58SPEAKER_01: We'll see how far they they can advance with their young young team compared to like the Rays or if the Yankees pull it off.
- 7:04SPEAKER_01: It'll be interesting.
- 7:05SPEAKER_02: On the National League side, Mark, we have a couple of good series on paper.
- 7:10SPEAKER_02: I'll start with another group of torture fans, these poor San Diego Padres.
- 7:15SPEAKER_02: Good lord.
- 7:16SPEAKER_02: These guys lose game one because a ball hits something on the roof and comes down in play and is caught for an out when it could have potentially been a home run.
- 7:23SPEAKER_02: At the very worst, it would have been a foul ball.
- 7:25SPEAKER_02: Game two, they lose in walk-off fashion, a play at the plate.
- 7:29SPEAKER_02: That's a really rough start for the Padres.
- 7:31SPEAKER_02: Do they have any hopes of coming back?
- 7:33SPEAKER_01: They don't.
- 7:33SPEAKER_01: They were cursed ever since those guys did the that's what's in chant with the Phillies jerseys, and they had like those four grown men.
- 7:40SPEAKER_01: You know what I'm talking about.
- 7:41SPEAKER_01: That was that's their you know Steve Bartman moment, let's say.
- 7:46SPEAKER_01: Like that, they're not they're not getting over that.
- 7:48SPEAKER_01: But the Brewers are good, they're a good team, but yeah, it's it's tough for the Padres fans.
- 7:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that is brutal.
- 7:54SPEAKER_02: And you're right to point to that video that was released that set the franchise back decades.
- 7:58SPEAKER_02: That was so bad.
- 7:59SPEAKER_02: That was the worst fan video, uh maybe of all time, which says something.
- 8:03SPEAKER_02: The other matchup, Braves Dodgers.
- 8:06SPEAKER_02: It's weird, but I'm rooting for the Dodgers, Mark.
- 8:08SPEAKER_02: I I know the way they were constructed is kind of oh, it's the evil empire of baseball.
- 8:12SPEAKER_02: They're backloading contracts, it's all dirty.
- 8:15SPEAKER_02: I kind of find the guys on the team pretty likable.
- 8:17SPEAKER_02: You see videos of these guys.
- 8:19SPEAKER_02: Freddie Freeman seems like a delight.
- 8:20SPEAKER_02: Mookie Betts, fellow podcaster, he's delightful.
- 8:23SPEAKER_02: I think Shohei, kind of funny.
- 8:25SPEAKER_02: There's a Padres fan video of him giving Shohei hell throughout the game.
- 8:29SPEAKER_02: Shohei hits one a million feet, comes back, and gives him like a hug.
- 8:33SPEAKER_02: I think he's a pretty likable guy.
- 8:34SPEAKER_02: Maybe not the translator, but I think the Dodgers as a ball club are pretty likable.
- 8:38SPEAKER_02: Whereas the Braves, obviously, that's just a rival of the Phillies, and I don't want to see them succeed ever.
- 8:42SPEAKER_01: I think the Braves are my least favorite team in baseball, and like I really hated the Dodgers last year as we as we lost to them.
- 8:48SPEAKER_01: And but I think I hate the Braves more.
- 8:50SPEAKER_01: And and and it's weird rooting for the Dodgers too, because like they feel like they're killing baseball.
- 8:55SPEAKER_01: But um, I think it I think we kind of have to put our eggs in the Brewers camp, maybe for to win the NL, and then maybe the White Sox, the Rays, and or Major League Baseball in terms of ratings for that World Series, I'll tell you.
- 9:08SPEAKER_01: Um, that's gonna be interesting.
- 9:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah, man Manfred is begging the Yankees to beat the Rays.
- 9:14SPEAKER_02: He cannot see them going around.
- 9:16SPEAKER_02: He wants Yankees, Dodgers, two biggest markets.
- 9:19SPEAKER_02: He would, I guess, settle for the Yankees playing anybody because that's best case for him.
- 9:23SPEAKER_02: But yeah, what do you think will actually happen?
- 9:26SPEAKER_02: Biases aside, what would be your prediction of who plays in the World Series and who wins it at this point?
- 9:31SPEAKER_01: I think I'm gonna go a rematch of 2020.
- 9:34SPEAKER_01: Uh I'm gonna go Dodgers Rays.
- 9:36SPEAKER_01: I think the Rays have a really, really good team.
- 9:39SPEAKER_01: I think they're better than anybody else.
- 9:40SPEAKER_01: I think they're, you know, especially with the Yankees not having judged for the DS, like I I think I think Tampa's gonna be able to take that one home.
- 9:46SPEAKER_01: And I just I I don't see the Dodgers losing.
- 9:49SPEAKER_01: But I'm gonna go with Tampa.
- 9:50SPEAKER_01: I think Tampa's gonna be able to pull it off.
- 9:52SPEAKER_01: There's something about the Dodgers, maybe they just aren't as powerful as they were in years past.
- 9:57SPEAKER_01: So that's what I'm gonna go with.
- 9:59SPEAKER_01: But I think the cream will still rise to the top.
- 10:01SPEAKER_01: I don't know if we're gonna get any like big surprises.
- 10:03SPEAKER_01: I think it's between like Dodgers, Brewers, Yankees, Brays.
- 10:07SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 10:07SPEAKER_01: One of those three teams.
- 10:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 10:09SPEAKER_02: I I was pretty harsh on the Rays last week just because I don't love that they do the very analytical approach with starting pitching and they do a ton of two-inning shifts here and there, but then immediately Rasmussen comes out and he almost throws a no-no.
- 10:21SPEAKER_02: And I was all the way back in.
- 10:23SPEAKER_02: I was like, oh, is this guy's blank in the Yankees?
- 10:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah, sign me right up.
- 10:26SPEAKER_02: So I'm I can easily get behind the Rays.
- 10:28SPEAKER_02: I would like to see the White Sox, I think.
- 10:30SPEAKER_02: They seem just like a fun bunch and my Japanese king.
- 10:33SPEAKER_02: I want him around as long as possible.
- 10:35SPEAKER_02: But then in the National League, I'm gonna say the Dodgers will be who I pick with my head at this point.
- 10:41SPEAKER_02: I just I want the Brewers, but I don't trust them in a series against the Dodgers.
- 10:47SPEAKER_02: It's really hard to pick against them.
- 10:48SPEAKER_02: So I'll go Dodgers race, but I'll have the Dodgers winning it.
- 10:51SPEAKER_02: So still a lot to come in baseball.
- 10:53SPEAKER_02: I have to say my interest has significantly waned after the elimination of the teams I mentioned I was going to be rooting for.
- 10:59SPEAKER_02: Of course, the Phillies.
- 11:01SPEAKER_02: But Mark, Thursday, I said how dark of a day it was.
- 11:03SPEAKER_02: Friday was a new day, and I'm very good about talking myself back up, getting optimistic again.
- 11:08SPEAKER_02: I always see the bright side and things.
- 11:09SPEAKER_02: If you know me, you know I'm Mr.
- 11:11SPEAKER_02: Bright side.
- 11:12SPEAKER_02: However, Friday night was reserved for a hate watch, which when your teams stink, you need to pivot.
- 11:19SPEAKER_02: And what I do to pivot is I dive deep into the hatred of my rivals.
- 11:24SPEAKER_02: And one of my biggest rivals is Pennsylvania State University, the Nittany Lions.
- 11:29SPEAKER_02: They go to Northwestern to open up Ryan Field, and boy, do they get absolutely shit on.
- 11:36SPEAKER_02: This brought me back to neutral.
- 11:38SPEAKER_02: This was just what the palate needed to get some energy for a big weekend ahead.
- 11:42SPEAKER_02: Mark, I guess let's start with Northwestern in the stadium because the atmosphere looked unbelievable, and the Wildcats got a ball club.
- 11:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, it's a beautiful stadium.
- 11:51SPEAKER_01: Like, you know, I know we were kind of thinking like, what if they did something like uh Fulham Craven Cottage where they would just almost make like a U-shape just along the water, kind of replicating their temporary stadium?
- 12:02SPEAKER_01: But this one's really cool.
- 12:03SPEAKER_01: They did a very nice job with it.
- 12:06SPEAKER_01: You know, it it's it's nice to see a ball club in a beautiful stadium like that at the old Ryan Field was not in the best of shape.
- 12:13SPEAKER_01: So you know, and super some super cool things they did with their student section above the uh of the visitors' locker room.
- 12:19SPEAKER_01: Like it's a it's a neat spot, and obviously the crowd and and the team delivered beating Penn State.
- 12:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's a nice touch.
- 12:27SPEAKER_02: I could really get behind.
- 12:28SPEAKER_02: That's a very much college football thing to do, to put your student section right above the visiting locker room and have these metal-ish bleachers that sound like cymbals going off when you're stomping.
- 12:39SPEAKER_02: So I think that's a cool move.
- 12:41SPEAKER_02: I think Northwestern knocked out of the park in that regard.
- 12:44SPEAKER_02: Also, just what a what a choice to open the stadium against Penn State to get that little extra bit of juice and deliver on a Friday night.
- 12:51SPEAKER_02: That was cool to see.
- 12:53SPEAKER_02: Penn State fans, if I can.
- 12:55SPEAKER_02: I'm speaking from experience as a torture fan.
- 12:57SPEAKER_02: You just need to give Matt Campbell time, just like James Franklin.
- 13:01SPEAKER_02: He'll be fine.
- 13:02SPEAKER_02: Give him time.
- 13:03SPEAKER_02: I plan on going to the game.
- 13:05SPEAKER_02: Minnesota travels to Penn State November 14th.
- 13:07SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna wear a maroon and gold extend Matt Campbell shirt just to show some solidarity with my Penn State fans while supporting some Minnesota colors.
- 13:16SPEAKER_02: I think you just need time in this process.
- 13:18SPEAKER_02: This guy's gonna be good.
- 13:19SPEAKER_02: You just need to give him four, five, six, maybe seven years.
- 13:22SPEAKER_01: You know, one thing I realized about Penn State is that I think they think they are greater than they are.
- 13:30SPEAKER_01: I mean, like, they won a couple titles in, you know, in the 80s, but like they're not an Ohio State.
- 13:36SPEAKER_01: They're not a Michigan.
- 13:37SPEAKER_01: And like, for all of the James Franklin's flaws, like, he brought them to the playoff, he brought them to national relevance, but it still wasn't good enough for the you know the folks up in state college.
- 13:47SPEAKER_01: And you know what?
- 13:48SPEAKER_01: I think I might like be in the James Franklin camp.
- 13:50SPEAKER_01: Like they look at look at where they are now, losing to Northwestern.
- 13:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 13:55SPEAKER_01: Um, as Sean's wearing his Virginia Tech hat.
- 13:57SPEAKER_01: Like, I just don't think I don't know what they're they're expecting.
- 14:01SPEAKER_01: They're not a blue blood, they don't like the Ohio States and Michigan's and Georgias and Alabama's, and I think they just gotta look themselves in the mirror a bit, too.
- 14:09SPEAKER_02: A hundred percent.
- 14:10SPEAKER_02: And there was definitely some vibes of a loveless marriage at the end of his Penn State tenure.
- 14:16SPEAKER_02: It was kind of 10 years, you know, they weren't having sex anymore.
- 14:19SPEAKER_02: It was it was one of those things where there was a lot of love loss between the two.
- 14:25SPEAKER_02: But the thing that kind of seemed to get forgotten about is kind of what you mentioned, just how good those good times were.
- 14:32SPEAKER_02: They were perennially a top 10 team.
- 14:33SPEAKER_02: If the playoff was around throughout his whole tenure, he would have made a lot more playoff appearances.
- 14:38SPEAKER_02: I think they're gonna have a hard time getting back there with Matt Campbell, but give him time, he'll get there.
- 14:44SPEAKER_02: I just think, I just think it's funny.
- 14:46SPEAKER_02: I'm enjoying it because, you know, you have, like I said, when your teams are down bad, the next best thing is to laugh at your opponents, your rivals.
- 14:53SPEAKER_02: Uh thank God Penn State sucked this year, so I get to do that.
- 14:56SPEAKER_02: Uh Virginia Tech on Friday night also mark a disaster way to end a game.
- 15:02SPEAKER_02: The uh attempted game-winning field goal kick kind of goes wide of the upright, but kind of goes in as well, depending on who you ask.
- 15:10SPEAKER_02: I just have to say, this is another one of those common sense things.
- 15:13SPEAKER_02: Why don't those uprights go to the moon?
- 15:15SPEAKER_02: What what's the point?
- 15:16SPEAKER_02: What's the downside of having that upright go 30 feet higher?
- 15:20SPEAKER_02: Because constantly we see kicks go over the uprights, and we don't know.
- 15:24SPEAKER_02: We genuinely don't know.
- 15:25SPEAKER_02: I would guess that this kick was probably not good because the ref was right underneath that upright, but the ref's also probably like a 55-year-old man, and I question his eyesight.
- 15:36SPEAKER_01: I do not understand.
- 15:38SPEAKER_01: We have all the technology in the world for tennis.
- 15:42SPEAKER_01: We have now ABS, which has done very well in Major League Baseball.
- 15:45SPEAKER_01: The clock that why is there not a chip in the football and two signals on top of the goalpost, and then you just run a V AR and you see if it went over or not?
- 15:57SPEAKER_01: Like, I to me, I don't understand how that just hasn't happened yet.
- 16:00SPEAKER_01: Like, and like, yes, I know you want the human element in the game, but also you gotta get the calls right.
- 16:05SPEAKER_01: And we don't no one actually truly knows if it went in or not.
- 16:08SPEAKER_01: Like, no, it's subjective.
- 16:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and that's such a good point.
- 16:13SPEAKER_02: The the Hawkeye technology in tennis is unbelievable.
- 16:16SPEAKER_02: APS and baseball, like you said, it's down to the centimeter.
- 16:18SPEAKER_02: They could tell you if a nose hair was out of the strike zone.
- 16:21SPEAKER_02: But the football, we still have 70-year-old men running 20 yards to the middle of the field in what they think is their best version of a straight line to mark the spot of a ball.
- 16:33SPEAKER_02: We have field goals that we don't know if they went through the uprights.
- 16:36SPEAKER_02: We we have a lot of things in football that we could really modernize and we just don't seem to be wanting to or willing to.
- 16:42SPEAKER_02: I think this is if I was a Virginia Tech fan, I'd be running this up the highest courts to try to get some return.
- 16:48SPEAKER_01: But I'm not we still I'm not really that perturbed by it because I think it created a lot of batter, a lot of chatter on the we still haven't evolved much from jeans territory using an index card to see if there isn't you know enough space on on fourth down, like at four.
- 17:05SPEAKER_02: That's a good point.
- 17:06SPEAKER_02: So that was Friday night, a good Friday night in college football.
- 17:10SPEAKER_02: Saturday, we had a lot of big games, not as many as the previous week, and maybe not as many as the next couple of weeks to come.
- 17:17SPEAKER_02: But the most notable game for me, the one I was paying most close attention to to start the day, was Alabama versus Mississippi State.
- 17:24SPEAKER_02: This was kind of always gonna happen.
- 17:26SPEAKER_02: It seems like Alabama is a wagon in Mississippi State's defense is not very good.
- 17:31SPEAKER_02: I don't want to make this story about my guy Camario, but I don't think it was really his fault.
- 17:38SPEAKER_02: He could have played better, of course, but Keelan Russell for Alabama really is the story, and it's a shame that these two aren't draft eligible right now.
- 17:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I was gonna say, like, Camario and Keelan, like, where would you put them, Sean, in in this class with an Arch and hopefully everything's okay with Dante Moore.
- 17:55SPEAKER_01: Like, where where do you think they would fit in?
- 17:57SPEAKER_01: I don't think anybody would be going above Arch, but I don't know.
- 18:00SPEAKER_02: Oh, I I would, I think.
- 18:01SPEAKER_02: I because with me, it's like Arch, it's all it's almost the Matthew McConaughey.
- 18:06SPEAKER_02: It's a fugazi, it's a guys, it's it's it's like we don't actually see it yet with Arch.
- 18:11SPEAKER_02: We see a sign of it here and a sign of it there, but then mostly it's us thinking of what Arch can be and not actually seeing what Arch is.
- 18:20SPEAKER_02: So for me, I'd rather the guys that are going out there and doing it, and they're a year younger, even two years younger, I think.
- 18:25SPEAKER_02: I think Camario is a true sophomore.
- 18:27SPEAKER_02: And uh for me, I'm gonna go uh in in this order.
- 18:32SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna go Camario one, Keelan two, and then I would rank these guys.
- 18:37SPEAKER_02: I talked about it a couple weeks ago with Jeff, I believe, and it was just kind of like this was the year of the quarterback in this draft, and everybody always says, Oh, next year's interfell draft's gonna be loaded with quarterbacks.
- 18:45SPEAKER_02: Well, when are these guys gonna start going out and doing it?
- 18:48SPEAKER_02: We had Dante Moore, who, yes, hope he's okay.
- 18:51SPEAKER_02: Dylan Royola comes in, and he that's the best Oregon's offense has looked all year, is with Rayola running the show.
- 18:56SPEAKER_02: I don't know if that's a great sign for Dante.
- 18:59SPEAKER_02: Arch, you know, it's like I said, one step forward, two steps back with him all the time.
- 19:03SPEAKER_02: Some of these other guys, like Julian Sain and CJ Carr, I think they're nice players, but I don't necessarily think they project physically to be those one and two overall picks.
- 19:12SPEAKER_02: So if it were me, I would my King Camario's first, and then Keelan has asserted himself second.
- 19:17SPEAKER_02: But that's gonna be a conversation for another year.
- 19:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 19:20SPEAKER_01: And I also think, too, like if his name was Arch Boyle, I don't think he'd be the consensus number one.
- 19:26SPEAKER_01: I think that people are just like, there's something about the Manning name that just gives him, you know, an extra bump, and I think he he could potentially have busts written all over him.
- 19:35SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 19:35SPEAKER_02: Well, if his last name was Boyle, he would certainly be a bust, and he'd be cracking jokes on the bench.
- 19:40SPEAKER_02: It would be very much a different conversation around Arch if his last name was not Manning, that's for sure.
- 19:44SPEAKER_02: We'll also talk about the SEC, a blip on the radar, I would say, for the Fortigators and my guy John Summerall.
- 19:52SPEAKER_02: We were high on them on this very channel.
- 19:54SPEAKER_02: I still remain high on them.
- 19:56SPEAKER_02: It was just not our best day in Columbia, Missouri.
- 19:59SPEAKER_02: They got absolutely boat raced by the Missouri Tigers.
- 20:02SPEAKER_02: And Eli Drinkwitz, who is a coach I don't really give much credit to because there's a stat out there.
- 20:07SPEAKER_02: I don't think he has beaten a team that's finished with a winning record in the SEC.
- 20:12SPEAKER_02: And he always gets talked about as if he can.
- 20:14SPEAKER_02: I think this might be the first team he's beaten in his tenure that will end up with a winning record in the SEC.
- 20:18SPEAKER_02: So credit to the Missouri Tigers and a little bit of a reality check for Florida.
- 20:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, Summerall was looking really good.
- 20:24SPEAKER_01: I feel like, you know, nowadays when you get these coaches to come up from the American, like it takes some time.
- 20:29SPEAKER_01: Um and I know in the days of NIL now, like you can obviously change things pretty quickly, but it really seemed like he had a culture established and he was like really doing some great things.
- 20:39SPEAKER_01: And I'm sure he still will, but I've that's that's gotta hurt for the Gator fans.
- 20:42SPEAKER_01: But I I am a Summerall fan as well.
- 20:44SPEAKER_01: I I like seeing guys from the American um, you know, go make go make a a name for themselves in you know the in the power five.
- 20:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he also is a Kentucky guy through and through, played a Kentucky, coach of Kentucky.
- 20:56SPEAKER_02: So I I'm a big fan of his for that reason, and I think he's genuinely a good guy.
- 21:01SPEAKER_02: And just hearing him speak after the loss, it's a coach you want to get behind.
- 21:05SPEAKER_02: It was kind of just like, yeah, we we needed this.
- 21:07SPEAKER_02: We weren't good enough.
- 21:09SPEAKER_02: You know, we we weren't good enough when we were winning 52 to 10 either.
- 21:13SPEAKER_02: There was a lot of things that winning covered up, and now it was exposed, and we needed it, which I was like, yeah, can get right behind that.
- 21:19SPEAKER_02: We'll go to work on Monday.
- 21:20SPEAKER_02: So hopefully Florida bounces back a little bit.
- 21:23SPEAKER_02: The other game that was of no between two top 25 teams was Iowa, Ohio State versus Iowa.
- 21:28SPEAKER_02: Game day was there.
- 21:30SPEAKER_02: This was kind of one where I think we all saw this one coming.
- 21:34SPEAKER_02: The the Iowa Hawkeyes are who we thought they were.
- 21:36SPEAKER_02: They just beat a pretty bad Michigan team, it turns out.
- 21:38SPEAKER_02: And Ohio State has a guy named Jeremiah Smith that every other team in the country doesn't have.
- 21:43SPEAKER_02: And this guy should win the Heisman.
- 21:45SPEAKER_02: At least if the Heisman were to be decided right now, he's the clear winner for me.
- 21:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, I can't wait to see.
- 21:52SPEAKER_01: Honestly, he should win the Heisman.
- 21:54SPEAKER_01: I'm very interested to see where he goes in the NFL draft.
- 21:56SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 21:57SPEAKER_02: That's an interesting conversation.
- 21:59SPEAKER_01: That's gonna be like Does he go above quarterbacks?
- 22:01SPEAKER_01: It really guesses it just depends on how the order shakes out as well.
- 22:05SPEAKER_01: You know, we'll get into football soon, but I think the New York Jets might have three first round picks.
- 22:09SPEAKER_01: Like you know, if a team that maybe and maybe a team doesn't need a quarterback, and he could go number one.
- 22:15SPEAKER_01: I mean, he's got the most physical talent, I think, of anybody that that is coming out of this class.
- 22:20SPEAKER_01: So yeah, he's he's incredible.
- 22:21SPEAKER_01: I'm excited to see him at the next level, too.
- 22:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he's going to be the first pick in a lot of first rookie picked in a lot of fantasy football drafts next year, that's for sure.
- 22:30SPEAKER_02: And I had this conversation with Jeff.
- 22:32SPEAKER_02: I honestly, I if it's me drafting, I'm taking this guy over a quarterback that hasn't proven to be good.
- 22:39SPEAKER_02: Now, if one of these quarterbacks for the next seven games of the season proves to be a standout performer and has those projectable traits to the next level, sure, go ahead, take them.
- 22:47SPEAKER_02: The quarterback position is the most important to get right.
- 22:50SPEAKER_02: But if you're not 100% sold on a guy, drafting the wrong quarterback sets you back a lot worse than drafting a guy you know is going to be a good wide receiver, even if that position isn't quote unquote as valuable as the quarterback is.
- 23:02SPEAKER_02: Jeremiah Smith is going to be a great NFL player.
- 23:05SPEAKER_02: I don't think anybody in the world has a doubt about that.
- 23:07SPEAKER_02: It seems like maybe you should just take that guy.
- 23:09SPEAKER_02: That's just my opinion.
- 23:10SPEAKER_02: I don't I don't know.
- 23:11SPEAKER_02: But hey, I'm not paid to make those decisions.
- 23:14SPEAKER_02: I'm sitting here talking about them with you.
- 23:16SPEAKER_02: The only other thing, Mark, I wanted to mention, a big Saturday for my Kentucky Wildcats, a road win at South Carolina, two SEC wins on the road for Will Stein to start his career.
- 23:27SPEAKER_02: First time a Kentucky coach has ever done that since Paul Bear Bryant.
- 23:30SPEAKER_02: Ever heard of him?
- 23:31SPEAKER_02: Maybe the best coach of all time.
- 23:33SPEAKER_02: This might be the current edition of that.
- 23:35SPEAKER_02: I think Will Stein's brilliant.
- 23:37SPEAKER_02: Kentucky's win total before the season was three and a half or four.
- 23:40SPEAKER_02: He has the Wildcats at four and one heading into a matchup against Lane Kiffin and the LSU Tigers in the bluegrass on Saturday night.
- 23:48SPEAKER_02: Fans go to Keenlan, 11 a.m.
- 23:51SPEAKER_02: Start your day with some tailgating.
- 23:53SPEAKER_02: Fall is in the order there.
- 23:55SPEAKER_02: The trees are starting to change color.
- 23:57SPEAKER_02: Get yourself over and enjoy a cat's win this weekend.
- 24:00SPEAKER_02: What a time to be in Lexington, Kentucky.
- 24:03SPEAKER_02: And then also Minnesota, the Golden Gophers pull off a slight upset over Michigan.
- 24:08SPEAKER_02: And I'll I really want to credit Penn State for all of this because, like I said, they were the palette cleanser that changed this momentum for me.
- 24:14SPEAKER_01: I a couple things.
- 24:16SPEAKER_01: One, it's going to be a raucous day at Croverfield.
- 24:20SPEAKER_01: I mean, having been there for like a night game against South Carolina and it was incredible.
- 24:25SPEAKER_01: I can't imagine what this game's going to be like at LSU or against LSU.
- 24:29SPEAKER_01: Both teams four and one after Keeneland.
- 24:32SPEAKER_01: It's going to be sick.
- 24:33SPEAKER_02: Yes, yes.
- 24:33SPEAKER_01: Wish we could go down there for that one.
- 24:35SPEAKER_02: A picture perfect day.
- 24:36SPEAKER_02: To be able to go Keeneland to start your day into a night game at Kroger.
- 24:41SPEAKER_02: It's it doesn't get better than that.
- 24:43SPEAKER_02: I wish I wish I could be there.
- 24:45SPEAKER_01: It looks like the weather's 72 and sunny during the day, which means it'll be like in the 50s at night with a nice light breeze.
- 24:51SPEAKER_01: Like no alcoholic beverage is safe in Lexington, Kentucky.
- 24:54SPEAKER_01: I will tell you that.
- 24:56SPEAKER_02: No.
- 24:56SPEAKER_02: And hopefully Lane Kiffin's not safe either.
- 24:58SPEAKER_02: I'll say that.
- 24:59SPEAKER_02: I hope he gets roughed up.
- 25:01SPEAKER_01: Back to your earlier point, Sean.
- 25:02SPEAKER_01: Hopefully Will Stein will be crowd surfing in the locker room, like your boy PJ Fleck.
- 25:07SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 25:07SPEAKER_01: And then the cats take home a win against Lane.
- 25:10SPEAKER_02: Did you see PJ Fleck last week, Mark?
- 25:12SPEAKER_02: He did the blood of Maverick Baronowski, one of the linebackers who's bleeding from his lip, and he just wiped Maverick's blood off of his lip and then smacked his own cheeks with it.
- 25:21SPEAKER_02: I love that.
- 25:22SPEAKER_02: This week, you know what he did?
- 25:23SPEAKER_02: He beats Michigan for the little brown jug.
- 25:25SPEAKER_02: First time they win in Minnesota since 77.
- 25:28SPEAKER_02: And he says this is the best day of his life besides the birth of his children and his wedding.
- 25:34SPEAKER_01: It means more to some, Sean.
- 25:36SPEAKER_01: It really does.
- 25:36SPEAKER_01: Like the blood was unbelievable.
- 25:39SPEAKER_01: I mean, I wonder if I wonder if they, you know, had the team doctors check him out or anything like that after that.
- 25:44SPEAKER_01: Hopefully, no like no funny business, but hopefully everything was good there.
- 25:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's just a football guy.
- 25:50SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 25:51SPEAKER_02: When you see a guy just without knowing cameras were on him or doing it for any plotits or attention, just wanting him to paint himself in another man's blood.
- 25:58SPEAKER_02: It reminded me of dodgeball.
- 26:00SPEAKER_02: It's kind of a different, but nobody makes me bleed my own blood left.
- 26:03SPEAKER_02: It's like that.
- 26:04SPEAKER_02: That sort of thing.
- 26:05SPEAKER_02: It was just an absolutely electric move from PJ.
- 26:08SPEAKER_02: So the gophers get a big one.
- 26:10SPEAKER_02: All good on Saturday.
- 26:11SPEAKER_02: We're heading into NFL Sunday with positive momentum now.
- 26:14SPEAKER_02: And there was a few good games throughout the day.
- 26:17SPEAKER_02: Games that ended up being close, I would say, like Witching Hour delivered, games that ended up being within a score of one another.
- 26:24SPEAKER_02: But the way we got there, the first half of the one o'clock games was an absolute snooze fest.
- 26:29SPEAKER_02: Some of those games that were supposed to be high scoring and good, like the Bengals and Jags, didn't really deliver.
- 26:34SPEAKER_02: Then the four o'clock games, same sort of story.
- 26:36SPEAKER_02: We're hoping for some high-flying games, some good scores.
- 26:39SPEAKER_02: We had the Broncos, 49ers.
- 26:40SPEAKER_02: That game was 3-3 for four hours.
- 26:43SPEAKER_02: We had the Eagles-Rams, which was an ugly affair.
- 26:47SPEAKER_02: The Chiefs Raiders was decent, I guess.
- 26:50SPEAKER_02: So a lot of games that didn't really live up to the hype, a lot of penalties, some gruesome injuries, which you hate to see.
- 26:56SPEAKER_02: The thing I have to start the conversation with, though, Mark, is your Philadelphia Eagles.
- 27:01SPEAKER_02: 20 points in the first half, zero in the second, yet again.
- 27:04SPEAKER_02: Jalen Hurts.
- 27:06SPEAKER_02: I know he doesn't have his favorite target, Devontae Smith.
- 27:08SPEAKER_02: He's not, he's not progressing through his reads, Mark.
- 27:11SPEAKER_02: We've got some guys running open that he's just not seeing.
- 27:13SPEAKER_02: Give me your thoughts on the birds this weekend.
- 27:16SPEAKER_01: It just, every time I watch them, I just, it just doesn't make sense.
- 27:21SPEAKER_01: I don't understand.
- 27:22SPEAKER_01: It's like you watch all these other teams and like the way that they move the ball down the field.
- 27:27SPEAKER_01: Like the talent the Eagles have on offense, and maybe it relates back to the line and Jalen doesn't have enough time, or maybe like I think he is very much leaning on his first read compared to a lot of other quarterbacks.
- 27:38SPEAKER_01: But I just watch him.
- 27:39SPEAKER_01: I'm like, how do we not move the ball down the field?
- 27:42SPEAKER_01: And then like there's some flashes of brilliance, and there's some flashes of just incompetence.
- 27:47SPEAKER_01: It doesn't make sense.
- 27:48SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna reserve some feedback for you know some of our future segments that we have coming up back here.
- 27:54SPEAKER_01: But yeah, it was definitely a tough day.
- 27:56SPEAKER_01: You know, the injuries as well between Saquon, Cooper, Quinyon, like just going down like like flies.
- 28:03SPEAKER_01: Not a good day in South Philadelphia for sure.
- 28:06SPEAKER_02: No, it was a game where I think before the game, Eagles fans were kind of saying, Oh, it's a free hit.
- 28:10SPEAKER_02: You know, and we're so banged up.
- 28:11SPEAKER_02: The Lane Johnson news on Sundays, it's like a backbreaker because their record without Lane is horrific.
- 28:18SPEAKER_02: So they kind of lowered expectations, and it's like, well, if we beat the Rams, that'll be a great win.
- 28:22SPEAKER_02: If not, we could just point to the injuries.
- 28:24SPEAKER_02: Well, somehow they end up getting more injured in the game and built up a lead that was big enough to definitely hold on to.
- 28:30SPEAKER_02: It was second and goal, I think, from the five with a 10-point lead late in the third quarter, and they end up losing that one at home.
- 28:38SPEAKER_02: The fans are getting into fights with the Rams coaching staff.
- 28:41SPEAKER_02: I did like seeing that.
- 28:43SPEAKER_02: The thing for me is I don't I like Jalen Hurts, winner.
- 28:46SPEAKER_02: I listen, I'm a fan of winners.
- 28:48SPEAKER_02: Jalen Hurts is a winner.
- 28:50SPEAKER_02: If I wasn't, and this is not Sean Boyle speaking, this is somebody else as a fan, wrote this in.
- 28:55SPEAKER_02: Can you comment on the fact that he's at eight offensive coordinators in eight years dating back to college?
- 29:00SPEAKER_02: And maybe that's not all the coordinators' fault.
- 29:03SPEAKER_02: Would you like to comment on that?
- 29:04SPEAKER_02: Or should I save that for one of the other Philly boys?
- 29:06SPEAKER_01: You know, there's another guest that might come on the podcast that might be calling for Jalen Hurts' job.
- 29:11SPEAKER_01: You know, I think we we know him as the worm, but that's all I'm gonna say.
- 29:16SPEAKER_01: You know, I think it it's it's tough.
- 29:18SPEAKER_01: I I I've always I I'll say this, like between Hertz and Siriani, like multiple Super Bowls, one Super Bowl title in a couple years of of them being together.
- 29:29SPEAKER_01: So like clearly both of them don't stink, but I think there's obviously some concerning things to look through, and and the biggest thing for me is just like one, I think just relying on his first read.
- 29:42SPEAKER_01: I think it's you know something that needs to be addressed.
- 29:45SPEAKER_01: And his best year came with Kellen Moore, like somebody's gotta tap into whatever he was cooking.
- 29:51SPEAKER_01: And then the second thing I think that's really important is he's not on his legs as much.
- 29:55SPEAKER_01: And when he's when he makes plays with his legs, I feel like the rest of the field opens up.
- 29:59SPEAKER_01: So to me, it's like, and I know there's obviously some you know some injury risks here and there, but the best Jalen is versatile and has the opportunity to run and then make plays on his feet, and they're not designing things for him, so I think that that's part of it too.
- 30:13SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it just it's weird to me.
- 30:15SPEAKER_02: It seems broken.
- 30:16SPEAKER_02: I think a lot of it might be because of the fact that when Saquon came, the way they were able to build the offense was just we're going to be the best offensive line of football.
- 30:24SPEAKER_02: We're going to run the ball with such success that it opens everything else up.
- 30:28SPEAKER_02: And they haven't been able to pivot off of that since they're not able to run the ball as effectively anymore.
- 30:34SPEAKER_02: And it's created this situation where they've become such a miserable watch.
- 30:38SPEAKER_02: I'm rooting for the Eagles most weeks.
- 30:40SPEAKER_02: I bet them each week.
- 30:41SPEAKER_02: They're fucking miserable to watch these guys.
- 30:44SPEAKER_02: They go three and out every other time, and it's like, oh, damn it, we tried it again.
- 30:48SPEAKER_02: It didn't work.
- 30:48SPEAKER_02: Well, fucking figure it out, please, because there's American dollars at stake here, boys.
- 30:53SPEAKER_02: I it's frustrating for me.
- 30:55SPEAKER_02: I couldn't imagine being an Eagles fan.
- 30:56SPEAKER_02: I'm sure it's even more frustrating.
- 30:58SPEAKER_02: In Pittsburgh, at least we know the best case scenario is we win nine or ten games and lose in the first round.
- 31:03SPEAKER_02: In Philly, you guys still think you're gonna win the title each year.
- 31:06SPEAKER_02: And that's where the problems come in.
- 31:08SPEAKER_02: If you guys were resigned to the fact that you're just not that good, I think you'd be better off, but you're not.
- 31:13SPEAKER_02: You're not, it no matter how much you tell yourselves you're fine with just being okay, you are not fine with it.
- 31:18SPEAKER_02: So there's some trouble in Philadelphia.
- 31:21SPEAKER_02: I think they could figure it out.
- 31:22SPEAKER_02: But the other problem with Philly is the Cowboys picked up a big win on the road in Houston in a game where I have to toss my hand up.
- 31:30SPEAKER_02: Once again, I'm apologizing for believing in these fucking Texans.
- 31:33SPEAKER_02: I I keep falling into the trap mark.
- 31:35SPEAKER_02: They're 0-4 again.
- 31:38SPEAKER_02: Their defense got just outworked.
- 31:40SPEAKER_02: CeeDee Lamb ran wild, 17 catches.
- 31:44SPEAKER_02: Anytime they needed to get him off the field and get the Cowboys off the field, they could not.
- 31:48SPEAKER_02: I think it's really gloomy in Houston, but I will say if you look at their schedule, their next six, very winnable games.
- 31:56SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna end up talking myself back into these Texans by the end of the week, I'll tell you that.
- 32:00SPEAKER_02: But give me your thoughts on the Cowboys.
- 32:02SPEAKER_02: Are they for real and are the Texans dead?
- 32:04SPEAKER_01: I don't know if the Cowboys are for real.
- 32:06SPEAKER_01: I think that I think the defense is still a problem.
- 32:08SPEAKER_01: The offense is great, though.
- 32:09SPEAKER_01: I mean, they're just gonna be in shootouts every game, and you know, they'll win their fair share of games.
- 32:12SPEAKER_01: I don't know if I have them winning the division.
- 32:14SPEAKER_01: I think it's but I think it's a little bit more of a toss-up at this point.
- 32:17SPEAKER_01: They certainly look a lot better than the Eagles do on offense, but um well, we'll see what happens in you know, November and December when when defense has got to really start trying to win out here.
- 32:27SPEAKER_01: Um the Texans, I agree with you, like tough start to the year in terms of their schedule and their opponents.
- 32:32SPEAKER_01: They're a confusing one too.
- 32:34SPEAKER_01: Like, why have they not won a game?
- 32:36SPEAKER_01: Because they they do have clearly the talent, especially on defense.
- 32:39SPEAKER_01: How are they giving up 30-something points and 17 catches to CeeDee Lamb?
- 32:43SPEAKER_01: I don't get it, but yeah, I think there's still hope for them.
- 32:46SPEAKER_01: And then I will pivot too as well.
- 32:49SPEAKER_01: Talk about our wins pool.
- 32:51SPEAKER_01: I know you had a bummer with the Texans at 0-4, that's your squad.
- 32:54SPEAKER_01: And I don't want them to win the division, but potential pick of the draft from the New York Giants, my boy Jameis.
- 33:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, the Giants.
- 33:05SPEAKER_01: No, I'm I'm shocked by that.
- 33:06SPEAKER_01: That was a that was just a pick that fell to me.
- 33:08SPEAKER_01: Oh, and the Browns too.
- 33:10SPEAKER_01: Two three-and-one teams.
- 33:11SPEAKER_01: Shocker.
- 33:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they're 4-0.
- 33:16SPEAKER_02: Some of my best picks.
- 33:18SPEAKER_02: My first round pick hasn't won a game.
- 33:19SPEAKER_02: And I'm still in the lead in the wins pool.
- 33:21SPEAKER_02: It's insane.
- 33:22SPEAKER_02: They're 0-4.
- 33:23SPEAKER_02: The fucking Texans.
- 33:24SPEAKER_02: I took them first round.
- 33:25SPEAKER_02: They haven't won a game.
- 33:26SPEAKER_02: So that's killing me.
- 33:26SPEAKER_02: I have the Chargers.
- 33:27SPEAKER_02: The Chargers suck too.
- 33:29SPEAKER_02: Chargers are horrific.
- 33:30SPEAKER_02: We'll get to them in a second.
- 33:31SPEAKER_02: They they're bad.
- 33:33SPEAKER_02: But yeah, the Texans, I'm still somehow, call me delusional.
- 33:36SPEAKER_02: I'm still buying some stock just because of how bad their schedule is coming up.
- 33:40SPEAKER_02: But it's so weird that they can't put a game together where the defense plays well with CJ Stroud playing well.
- 33:45SPEAKER_02: Against the Bills in week one, and then against the Cowboys here, you got good CJ Stroud performances, and the defense has given up 30 plus, which is not what D'Amico Ryans wants.
- 33:53SPEAKER_02: They need to figure that out.
- 33:54SPEAKER_02: I'm not sure if they will.
- 33:55SPEAKER_02: I'm way less certain about them than I was to start the year, obviously.
- 33:58SPEAKER_02: The Cowboys, I'm with you.
- 34:00SPEAKER_02: We always talk about how they're great in August and September, and then when the frost starts to roll in in the morning, the Cowboys kind of wither away, sort of pumpkins.
- 34:09SPEAKER_02: But they do have an offense that at least makes them entertaining to watch, which is why I think the national branding around them is a lot better than the Eagles, even if I would rather have an Eagles-like team where defense wins championships and their defense is built a lot more solidly.
- 34:25SPEAKER_02: So I think Water will find its level there.
- 34:27SPEAKER_02: The Eagles will be fine and the Cowboys will wither away.
- 34:30SPEAKER_02: It's just a little more concerning than I was to start the year on that situation.
- 34:33SPEAKER_02: Elsewhere in the NFL mark, the big four o'clock game that kind of delivered in terms of excitement was the Raiders and Chiefs.
- 34:40SPEAKER_02: We had Clint Kubiak saying at halftime when they were up three that he will win this game.
- 34:45SPEAKER_02: We will win this game.
- 34:47SPEAKER_02: Kind of a bold declaration, and I hate that my guy Clint did it when he didn't deliver.
- 34:52SPEAKER_02: So what were your thoughts?
- 34:53SPEAKER_02: Are the Chiefs for real at four?
- 34:55SPEAKER_02: No.
- 34:55SPEAKER_01: Unfortunately, Sean, I think they might be.
- 34:58SPEAKER_01: And I think a big reason why is your boy on your fantasy team, Kenneth Walker.
- 35:04SPEAKER_01: I think that what he's done for the offense, it reminds me of like Prime Chiefs with Kareem Hunt.
- 35:08SPEAKER_01: Now, the Chiefs need to get some receiving depth because boy, are they dropping like flies?
- 35:14SPEAKER_01: Pork, Taekwond, Thornton, Rasheed Rice's hamstring might be a problem over the next few weeks.
- 35:20SPEAKER_01: And there's a little cheetah, number 10, that's sitting out there in free agency and rumors are starting to heat up.
- 35:26SPEAKER_01: Um, but what a reunion that would be.
- 35:28SPEAKER_01: But yeah, I think uh, you know, they are looking good.
- 35:31SPEAKER_01: They're looking like they might try to do one last run, get one in for Andy Reid, send him off into the sunset.
- 35:37SPEAKER_01: But yeah, I think they might be for real.
- 35:38SPEAKER_01: But I also think the Raiders might be all right too.
- 35:40SPEAKER_01: So I'm interested to see how they, you know, continue to progress.
- 35:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah, the Raiders are my favorite pick that I did in the Winds Pool.
- 35:45SPEAKER_02: I'm a fan of Clint Kubiak because of Michael Collins.
- 35:48SPEAKER_02: He was the first on him for me.
- 35:50SPEAKER_02: He's been telling me about him for years now.
- 35:51SPEAKER_02: And I love him.
- 35:52SPEAKER_02: He's such a good offensive coach.
- 35:54SPEAKER_02: He's made Kirk Cousins look really good in that offense.
- 35:56SPEAKER_02: I think he'll do the same for Mendoza.
- 35:58SPEAKER_02: You could just tell the difference between a well-coached group and a poorly coached group, and it's so evident when you see a team like the Raiders, who are in the first year of a process, but it's already off to a great start, and I don't think this loss is anything more than a blip on the radar.
- 36:10SPEAKER_02: The Chiefs are interesting.
- 36:12SPEAKER_02: They remind me, Mark, of when the Eagles got Saquon.
- 36:15SPEAKER_02: It seems like that's the we're going to shift now how we play, and it's a piece that could take us over the edge if he stays healthy for a full season.
- 36:22SPEAKER_02: That first season in Philly with Saquon, obviously he did the 2,000 yards, and oh, what a year he had.
- 36:26SPEAKER_02: Kenneth Walker is the same kind of shot of life into a team that really needed it.
- 36:31SPEAKER_02: I'm a little bit concerned about the workload and how sustainable that could be because, you know, touching the ball 25 times a game in the NFL is probably not the best move if you want to win a Super Bowl.
- 36:40SPEAKER_02: You might need to take a few weeks off in between there, but he completely changes their offense.
- 36:44SPEAKER_02: It is like Kareem Hunt.
- 36:45SPEAKER_02: They were most successful when they were able to run to throw instead of having to just draw Mahomes run around like a chicken with his head cut off each time he drops back.
- 36:53SPEAKER_02: So the Chiefs are certainly good.
- 36:55SPEAKER_02: I think they're clearly the best team in the AFC to start this season.
- 37:00SPEAKER_02: I I think it's kind of right back where they left off a couple years ago.
- 37:03SPEAKER_02: They had a few years of that bad offense, but it seems like they picked up where they left off.
- 37:07SPEAKER_02: Now, I have some notes from the field, Mark, and if you have any, just hop in.
- 37:12SPEAKER_02: We'll just shoot the shit a little bit, go back and forth.
- 37:14SPEAKER_02: These are just things I I wrote down as I was watching ball on Sunday.
- 37:18SPEAKER_02: And we have to start in London at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
- 37:22SPEAKER_02: This has been going on all season, and apparently it's been going on for years now, and I just hadn't noticed.
- 37:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 37:27SPEAKER_02: But Carly Ursay is sitting, standing right along the bench on the sideline, just jotting down notes feverishly throughout the game.
- 37:36SPEAKER_02: She takes notes notes on every snap.
- 37:39SPEAKER_02: She is now the owner of the Colts, I believe, right?
- 37:41SPEAKER_02: Since her father passed away.
- 37:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 37:44SPEAKER_01: One of, you know, the kind of the control person.
- 37:46SPEAKER_01: There's, you know, a couple siblings that split ownership, but yeah, more or less the the main point person.
- 37:52SPEAKER_02: And she is the daughter of Jim Mersey, correct?
- 37:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 37:56SPEAKER_01: All the kids are the owners now.
- 37:57SPEAKER_02: Okay, that makes sense.
- 37:58SPEAKER_02: But she's as meticulous as a surgeon.
- 38:00SPEAKER_02: She is writing down something on every snap.
- 38:03SPEAKER_02: I don't know what she's writing down or why, but boy, I don't see any other owners doing this.
- 38:08SPEAKER_02: She's really putting in the legwork.
- 38:09SPEAKER_02: This is what we call servant leadership, Mark.
- 38:11SPEAKER_01: You know, I wonder where those notes go, right?
- 38:13SPEAKER_01: Like it's in the world of like AI and data and like compiling things, like you would imagine they uh that somewhere.
- 38:20SPEAKER_01: Like, is she transcribing those?
- 38:22SPEAKER_01: Is an intern like taking those as a chicken scratch or what?
- 38:25SPEAKER_01: Um, and then the other point is like I respect her like for getting in there and and trying to make the team better or at least be close to it versus just being completely aloof.
- 38:34SPEAKER_01: But can you imagine if any of the other like like classic NFL owners were doing this, like Jerry Jones, Robert Kraft?
- 38:42SPEAKER_01: It would actually be unbelievable to see that.
- 38:46SPEAKER_01: But no, props, props to her, and and I hope it works out.
- 38:48SPEAKER_01: I I do like the Colts.
- 38:49SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, they're they're generally a likable bunch.
- 38:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no, I can't picture any of the other coaches doing this, or any of the other owners doing this because of what it would look like for their coaches.
- 38:59SPEAKER_02: And I think the coaches would then be just looking around their shoulder, like, well, what's he doing?
- 39:03SPEAKER_02: Why is he always around me?
- 39:04SPEAKER_02: That's my boss.
- 39:05SPEAKER_02: Like, sorry I didn't call the play you want.
- 39:07SPEAKER_02: I'm third and short, you know what I mean?
- 39:08SPEAKER_02: But she's getting away with it.
- 39:10SPEAKER_02: And honestly, I think it's keeping Chain Steichen in check.
- 39:13SPEAKER_02: I would be laser focused if I were him, because I know if I set a foot wrong, Miss Carly's gonna have an issue with it.
- 39:18SPEAKER_02: So she's gonna have receipts, which I do appreciate.
- 39:21SPEAKER_02: I'll move back stateside here.
- 39:24SPEAKER_02: During the one o'clock window, there's always a guy, usually a backup, sometimes just a shitty quarterback, that he has a game where every time you pick your head up, he's throwing the ball to the other team.
- 39:33SPEAKER_02: And for me today, that was Tyson Bajant.
- 39:36SPEAKER_02: Anytime you looked up in this one, the ball was being thrown to the New York Jets.
- 39:40SPEAKER_02: The only issue was there was a penalty on almost every occasion.
- 39:43SPEAKER_02: So Tyson Bajant, I think he threw seven practice interceptions in plays that didn't count, only one real one.
- 39:50SPEAKER_02: But boy, oh boy, was that an ugly affair.
- 39:53SPEAKER_02: They just mauled the Jets on the ground.
- 39:54SPEAKER_02: Geno Smith, I looked up in the third quarter, had 40 yards passing.
- 39:58SPEAKER_02: It's one of those situations where you could give the Jets the Tortured Fans of the Week award every week if you really wanted to.
- 40:04SPEAKER_02: That's such a sorry bunch.
- 40:06SPEAKER_02: But Tyson Bajet tried his best to lose the starting job.
- 40:09SPEAKER_02: So my question to you would be: who would you go with against the Packers for the Bears this week?
- 40:13SPEAKER_02: Would you go with Tyson Bajer or would you go with all reliable Case Keen?
- 40:17SPEAKER_01: I respect the fact that Ben Johnson stuck to his guns as Tyson was, you know, the backup prior to the concussion.
- 40:24SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's ballsy.
- 40:25SPEAKER_01: How could you not start Case Keenan last week after what he did to the Eagles?
- 40:30SPEAKER_01: The man looked like Tom Brady.
- 40:33SPEAKER_01: He took it.
- 40:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 40:34SPEAKER_01: I don't know if it was a function of the defense or whatever Ben Johnson was running.
- 40:37SPEAKER_01: But I one of the things I also had have read recently is that he's an old school.
- 40:43SPEAKER_01: You see some of these old school guys just come in and sling it because they are able to look, you know, look at multiple reads.
- 40:48SPEAKER_01: They're not run first quarterbacks.
- 40:49SPEAKER_01: Like they just have done it and they know we can step in and read a defense pretty easily.
- 40:55SPEAKER_01: So, like, I mean it looked like he was picking him apart.
- 40:57SPEAKER_01: So, like, I would have gone with Case.
- 40:59SPEAKER_01: I'm surprised that he went with Tyson because I would I I would imagine seeing another repeat performance that like Case Kingdom has the ability to do it.
- 41:06SPEAKER_01: He led the Vikings to win in against the Saints in the Minneapolis Miracle.
- 41:10SPEAKER_01: Like the guy, the guy's done it.
- 41:12SPEAKER_01: Um I think while you wait for Caleb to come back, you let him rip.
- 41:15SPEAKER_02: I think I would have agreed with you going into this week against the Jets.
- 41:18SPEAKER_02: I I it's hard on it's hard on Tyson Bajant, though, as well.
- 41:21SPEAKER_02: A guy who really earned his place as the backup.
- 41:24SPEAKER_02: He's been a good backup in the past, and he's told all offseason, all summer, first couple weeks of the season he's the guy, and then he suffers a concussion, which is unfortunate, and then he loses his backup job, which is probably the only time he's gonna get to use that backup job is when Caleb's out.
- 41:37SPEAKER_02: And Case just steals the showy Wally Pipped him.
- 41:40SPEAKER_02: But the thing I guess maybe Ben Johnson would point to is upside throughout the course of the season.
- 41:44SPEAKER_02: Say Caleb did get hurt for real and missed the rest of the year.
- 41:48SPEAKER_02: I think Bajent might offer more long-term upside.
- 41:52SPEAKER_02: And just his mobility, his size, he might be able to develop into a better option for the Bears long term.
- 41:59SPEAKER_02: But in the interim, like going to Green Bay, if you have to win a one game, I'm going Case Keenum to win that one game based on what we've seen through those two weeks.
- 42:06SPEAKER_02: So that's gonna be an interesting decision for the Bears this week.
- 42:08SPEAKER_02: He said he's gonna roll with Tyson Bajent.
- 42:10SPEAKER_02: I just wonder how long that leash is.
- 42:12SPEAKER_01: I mean, Case has probably won.
- 42:14SPEAKER_01: I don't know what what his record is in the past with the Vikings and whatnot, but sure he's won in Lambeau before, or at least has like been really successful there and knows what it takes.
- 42:22SPEAKER_01: Like I think you gotta go with the vet in this scenario, but we'll see.
- 42:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it might just be a locker room, you know, camaraderie to worry about, too.
- 42:30SPEAKER_01: So there might be other factors of play.
- 42:32SPEAKER_02: What a coach Ben Johnson is, by the way.
- 42:34SPEAKER_02: Three wins this year, three different quarterbacks.
- 42:36SPEAKER_02: He'll take yours, beat his, take his, beat yours.
- 42:39SPEAKER_02: That's my guy.
- 42:40SPEAKER_02: Those are my Bears.
- 42:41SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna transition to a full-time Bears fan pretty soon, I think.
- 42:43SPEAKER_02: It's just gonna have to be what I do because of how bad the Steelers are and how much I hate Mike McCarthy.
- 42:48SPEAKER_02: But that's a conversation for a different day.
- 42:50SPEAKER_02: Mark, we had a quarterback battle for the ages this week, and I wish it was a standalone matchup every week.
- 42:55SPEAKER_02: This should just be a permanent London game.
- 42:57SPEAKER_02: Jacoby Brissett versus Jameis Winston.
- 42:59SPEAKER_02: You could rotate the teams that they play for, but those two are steady quarterbacks on each side.
- 43:04SPEAKER_02: What do you think about that?
- 43:05SPEAKER_01: I think it's fantastic.
- 43:06SPEAKER_01: They are just electric.
- 43:08SPEAKER_01: Jacoby more on the field.
- 43:09SPEAKER_01: Jameis also on the field, but also off the field.
- 43:12SPEAKER_01: I think that there's, you know, you look at all these clips all the time and it's like, is this real or is this AI?
- 43:19SPEAKER_01: Most of the time you can tell that it's AI.
- 43:22SPEAKER_01: Jameis is the one case where I legitimately have no clue.
- 43:26SPEAKER_01: And because he says the most outlandish things, like that crab leg quote, like you have one man with one crab leg or one man with 53 crab legs.
- 43:34SPEAKER_01: I think it's real.
- 43:36SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 43:37SPEAKER_01: It's just it's truly amazing because he's a walking like AI troll.
- 43:41SPEAKER_01: It's amazing.
- 43:42SPEAKER_02: You can't be too sure with Jameis.
- 43:44SPEAKER_02: He is great.
- 43:45SPEAKER_02: He delivers on and off the field, like you said.
- 43:47SPEAKER_02: Somebody called him a backup quarterback and he corrected him this week in the media.
- 43:49SPEAKER_02: He was like, No, no, no, I'm not a backup anymore.
- 43:51SPEAKER_02: I'm a starter now.
- 43:52SPEAKER_02: And if you talk about just a quarterback room filled with electricity, we have Jackson Dart as the starter who is phenomenal to watch.
- 44:00SPEAKER_02: Watch whether you think it's sustainable or not.
- 44:02SPEAKER_02: He runs around, he makes exciting plays.
- 44:05SPEAKER_02: He's the starter.
- 44:06SPEAKER_02: He goes down injured.
- 44:07SPEAKER_02: Okay, backup.
- 44:07SPEAKER_02: We got Jameis Winston.
- 44:09SPEAKER_02: Great.
- 44:10SPEAKER_02: You know?
- 44:10SPEAKER_02: Oh my God, what a content king.
- 44:12SPEAKER_02: He's everywhere.
- 44:13SPEAKER_02: I think he I think he goes from playing quarterback on Sunday to then he go he calls a game.
- 44:18SPEAKER_02: I think he does both.
- 44:19SPEAKER_02: He he's everywhere.
- 44:20SPEAKER_02: He's working for Fox or CBS and preparing and leading a team out each week.
- 44:24SPEAKER_02: And then the third string now is nine.
- 44:26SPEAKER_02: JG McCarthy.
- 44:28SPEAKER_02: I mean, another guy who's a content king.
- 44:30SPEAKER_02: The picture of him looking like a dog in the tunnel with that mouth he's making, ready to get out on the field is electric.
- 44:37SPEAKER_02: I love everything about the Giants content, even if I don't think one bit of what they've done on the field is sustainable.
- 44:43SPEAKER_01: It's truly amazing.
- 44:44SPEAKER_01: I mean, and and we're gonna have to JJ is now nine times two because he's now number 18.
- 44:50SPEAKER_01: We gotta give him nine.
- 44:53SPEAKER_02: What are we doing?
- 44:53SPEAKER_01: That needs to be fixed.
- 44:55SPEAKER_02: That needs to be fixed.
- 44:56SPEAKER_01: We gotta get it back to him.
- 44:57SPEAKER_01: That's his brand.
- 44:58SPEAKER_02: But I do like that he kept it nine times two.
- 45:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah, 18.
- 45:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 45:01SPEAKER_01: At least if we can find a way there.
- 45:04SPEAKER_02: So hopefully we get him in the mix as well.
- 45:06SPEAKER_02: I'd love to see some packages for the two of them.
- 45:08SPEAKER_02: Oh, it's great.
- 45:09SPEAKER_02: So that's what we have in New York.
- 45:10SPEAKER_02: They're a three-in-one ball club somehow.
- 45:12SPEAKER_02: I think reality's gonna punch them in the face sooner than later.
- 45:16SPEAKER_02: Mark, not a good day for referees.
- 45:18SPEAKER_02: Not a good day for referees.
- 45:19SPEAKER_02: We had a ref tell Trey McBride, fuck you, twice, which was awesome.
- 45:24SPEAKER_02: I like that the refs have some power to punch back, even if that's definitely not allowable, and he'll probably be fired.
- 45:32SPEAKER_02: We also had a ref get hit by a Viking accidentally, and then he came up with the most attitude I've ever seen.
- 45:39SPEAKER_02: The point he pointed to that Viking to get back so with so much zestiness, you can't help but he was just trying to make it about him.
- 45:47SPEAKER_02: It was clearly an accident that Wilson on the Vikings hit him.
- 45:50SPEAKER_02: He gets up, he gets in Wilson's face, he's like, get away, get away from me.
- 45:53SPEAKER_02: It was so funny.
- 45:54SPEAKER_02: Not a good day for the refs, and I wish Michael Collins was here to answer for it.
- 45:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we're really gonna have to get his opinion on all these.
- 46:00SPEAKER_01: A couple things.
- 46:01SPEAKER_01: I one, I want to know what Trey McBride did that caused the ref to react like that.
- 46:05SPEAKER_01: And then, like calling back to last week, I don't know if you saw, but um, this is not a referee controversy.
- 46:11SPEAKER_01: This is actually a ball boy controversy.
- 46:13SPEAKER_01: I don't know if you saw the ball boy that was would not give the ball to the guy on the Jags.
- 46:17SPEAKER_01: I forget his name, but he's number 41.
- 46:19SPEAKER_01: He somebody scored and he then the Jags wanted the ball.
- 46:22SPEAKER_01: And the ball boy was adamant that he would not give it to him.
- 46:25SPEAKER_01: He's like, no, you're like you're not allowed, was screaming at him, fighting him, like then calling somebody else over, saying, like, you he can't touch me, he can't have the ball.
- 46:32SPEAKER_01: I think he got fired, but he took his job seriously.
- 46:35SPEAKER_01: Um he was going down with the ship.
- 46:37SPEAKER_02: I didn't see this.
- 46:38SPEAKER_01: You have to look that clip up.
- 46:39SPEAKER_02: I will look that up.
- 46:40SPEAKER_02: Was the ball boy on the Jags payroll or the other team?
- 46:43SPEAKER_02: Was it a road game?
- 46:45SPEAKER_02: It was a home game, so I think it was the Jags payroll.
- 46:48SPEAKER_02: Now that's interesting.
- 46:49SPEAKER_02: I would have been all for that if it was an opposing team just trying to get in your head.
- 46:52SPEAKER_02: We see that in soccer sometimes where the ball will go out and the team's trying to take a throw-in quickly.
- 46:58SPEAKER_02: And if you're a home ball boy, you get that ball to your guy ASAP.
- 47:02SPEAKER_02: Like they don't miss a beat.
- 47:03SPEAKER_02: That throw in happens immediately.
- 47:05SPEAKER_02: If you're on the road, you know, sometimes they'll take the pistol.
- 47:08SPEAKER_02: Shit, I dropped it, that sort of thing.
- 47:10SPEAKER_02: But I've not seen that clip in Jacksonville, I'll have to check that out.
- 47:14SPEAKER_01: So it was uh it looks like a Patriots ball boy, but it was Travis Hunter's first interception.
- 47:20SPEAKER_01: So they were trying to get the ball back for him.
- 47:22SPEAKER_02: Oh, okay.
- 47:23SPEAKER_02: That makes sense.
- 47:24SPEAKER_02: Well, I like that then.
- 47:25SPEAKER_02: If it's a Patriots ball boy, you know what I mean?
- 47:28SPEAKER_02: I'll be as petty as they come if you pick my guy off in the end zone.
- 47:31SPEAKER_02: Drake May's going through and I'm gonna stand up for him.
- 47:33SPEAKER_02: And I hope Drake May takes care of him now that he's out of a job.
- 47:36SPEAKER_02: The uh the other thing we have to get to from the late games, Justin Herbert, we talked about how bad the Chargers are.
- 47:43SPEAKER_02: And Herbert's been the at the butt of a lot of jokes on this podcast.
- 47:46SPEAKER_02: He will continue to be.
- 47:48SPEAKER_02: But Mark, I almost feel bad for him.
- 47:51SPEAKER_02: My God, does he take a beating?
- 47:52SPEAKER_02: Every play, he's peeling himself up off the turf.
- 47:56SPEAKER_02: There's blood coming from everywhere, it seems like once a game, you think he's knocked out cold, and it's created this thing.
- 48:03SPEAKER_02: We're on the sidelines, Mark.
- 48:04SPEAKER_02: This once beautiful 6'6 god of a man who used to have flowing hair and looks so cool on the sidelines.
- 48:11SPEAKER_02: He looks like Leo in Shudder Island on the sidelines.
- 48:14SPEAKER_02: Now he looks like he's seen some shit.
- 48:16SPEAKER_02: You don't know if he's a mental patient or not.
- 48:18SPEAKER_02: He's really going through it.
- 48:19SPEAKER_02: It's almost gotten to the point where I start, I'm starting to feel bad.
- 48:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, with all that blood all over him, someone should send PJ Fleck in there to clean up after him.
- 48:27SPEAKER_01: I think he would he would really enjoy that.
- 48:29SPEAKER_01: Uh, but yeah, he he's getting the shit knocked out of him.
- 48:32SPEAKER_01: It's been tough.
- 48:33SPEAKER_01: And then now I know they just lads out or lad got hurt, Joe Alt got hurt.
- 48:37SPEAKER_01: So I mean, that he's losing weapons one by one as well.
- 48:39SPEAKER_01: And he's just not the guy to do it on his own.
- 48:41SPEAKER_01: I think he needs he needs an offensive line, he needs weapons to be able to throw to, and and he can do it down the line.
- 48:48SPEAKER_01: But I think things are looking more bleak in LA for the Chargers than certainly for the you know the Houston Texans, I would say, and some other teams.
- 48:56SPEAKER_01: I I think like they could be in for an all-time stinker of a season.
- 49:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah, there's different levels of 0-4.
- 49:02SPEAKER_02: And and it certainly feels like the Chargers level of 0-4 is we're going to be cleaning house very soon.
- 49:08SPEAKER_02: Whereas the Texans, it's like, well, we know we have our coach and D'Amico Ryans, and they do need to get better on the field, but there's we're gonna figure it out.
- 49:15SPEAKER_02: There's some belief, there's some hope.
- 49:17SPEAKER_02: There is no hope left in Los Angeles.
- 49:19SPEAKER_02: Thankfully, they don't have any fans that really care.
- 49:21SPEAKER_02: So that's the good news for them.
- 49:23SPEAKER_02: They don't have anyone who's seriously upset by this.
- 49:26SPEAKER_02: It's just kind of the rest of the world laughing at them and other fans overtaking their stadium as their own.
- 49:32SPEAKER_02: So really not much to see in the direction of Chargers fans.
- 49:36SPEAKER_02: Mark, do you have anything else from the NFL?
- 49:38SPEAKER_01: I think we covered a lot of it, Sean.
- 49:40SPEAKER_01: I think like at the end of the day, the one piece that I I would I would bring to the table is everyone is up in arms about not playing in the preseason, not getting their guys any run in the preseason, keeping them healthy.
- 49:53SPEAKER_01: It might be starting to backfire.
- 49:54SPEAKER_01: I mean, the amount of injuries, like, is just insane.
- 49:58SPEAKER_01: The people that are popping hamstrings and the non-contact injuries, like, where are they coming from?
- 50:03SPEAKER_01: Why is it happening?
- 50:04SPEAKER_01: Uh it it's and does it relate back to the preseason?
- 50:08SPEAKER_01: I think it it makes us all kind of tortured fans of the NFL, like losing superstars and guys that make the game great.
- 50:14SPEAKER_01: So um, I think we've people, I wonder if some teams are gonna try to buck the trend and get interesting and try to like start to get their guys some more run in the preseason and see if that might change the amount of injuries they have.
- 50:24SPEAKER_02: It's weird.
- 50:25SPEAKER_02: This whole sports science thing.
- 50:27SPEAKER_02: It seems like we should be getting smarter and preventing more injuries, but it's almost a soccer analogy.
- 50:32SPEAKER_02: The game's gone, where the the game's gone, Mark.
- 50:35SPEAKER_02: We've lost the NFL.
- 50:36SPEAKER_02: Like I said, to start the conversation in the NFL, it was just kind of an ugly NFL Saturday or NFL Sunday.
- 50:42SPEAKER_02: There's so many procedural penalties in week four of the league.
- 50:47SPEAKER_02: Guys can't get lined up, holding, refs making it about them.
- 50:51SPEAKER_02: Then aside from that, like you said, we're losing superstar players left, right, and center.
- 50:57SPEAKER_02: And if they're not superstars, they're suffering a gruesome injury that's gonna make them a household name, like Thornton from the Chiefs.
- 51:03SPEAKER_02: That was absolutely horrible.
- 51:04SPEAKER_02: So I don't know if more of this war action compact violent sport is the answer of like getting more preseason games might not be the answer, but it also might be.
- 51:14SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 51:15SPEAKER_02: It doesn't seem like we used to go through these sort of things year over year like we are in the NFL.
- 51:20SPEAKER_02: So, yeah, that's a good point to close the NFL on.
- 51:23SPEAKER_02: Let's do tortured fans of the week.
- 51:25SPEAKER_02: We've mentioned several groups of these already.
- 51:27SPEAKER_02: I'm interested to hear what you have for me.
- 51:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah, kind of back to what I just said.
- 51:31SPEAKER_01: NFL fans.
- 51:32SPEAKER_01: I think we're all been tortured after week four.
- 51:34SPEAKER_01: And then, you know, to bring things closer to home, I'll also knock out Philadelphia Eagles fans and Philadelphia Phillies fans.
- 51:42SPEAKER_01: It was just a brutal week for anyone in Philadelphia.
- 51:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah, the Flyers are chilled by the Penguins, seven.
- 51:50SPEAKER_01: But there's there are some positives, and I know we're talking about torture fans, but I want to talk about non-torture fans at the same time.
- 51:56SPEAKER_01: Philadelphia Union fans, Kevin Sullivan, USA soccer, we are back.
- 52:00SPEAKER_01: Things are about to change.
- 52:01SPEAKER_01: And then your Philadelphia 76ers, like it's not all bleak, it's not all doom and gloom, but man, in the city of Philadelphia, the things look really shitty this weekend.
- 52:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I'm glad you brought up Kevin Sullivan and the Union.
- 52:12SPEAKER_02: Check out Friends on Football.
- 52:14SPEAKER_02: We we're going to be back hot and heavy this week, talking about all of the US MNT action.
- 52:19SPEAKER_02: You can put word out, we are back up.
- 52:20SPEAKER_02: We're the best soccer country in the world.
- 52:22SPEAKER_02: So go ahead and tell your friends.
- 52:24SPEAKER_02: That is a good, I guess, kind of way to deflect from the fact that the rest of the teams in Philadelphia stink.
- 52:31SPEAKER_02: And a lot of people don't care about the union, would be my retort.
- 52:34SPEAKER_02: But I hope they start to care.
- 52:36SPEAKER_02: And maybe because the fact that their teams do stink, they'll start to pick up and be like, oh, you know what?
- 52:40SPEAKER_02: I've been a lifelong union fan.
- 52:41SPEAKER_02: That would be good for the sport.
- 52:43SPEAKER_02: So I like that.
- 52:44SPEAKER_02: I do agree the NFL fans, it does feel like we're tortured in so many ways.
- 52:48SPEAKER_02: I'll go back to a couple of teams that we talked about before for my Torture Fans of the Week.
- 52:52SPEAKER_02: I think the Padres, I think losing the two games the way they did to start that series is absolutely brutal.
- 52:58SPEAKER_02: You can't really drop two more heartbreaking ways to lose.
- 53:01SPEAKER_02: I think those fans are tortured.
- 53:03SPEAKER_02: I will say a nice, I guess a nice thing to lean on is the fact that you live in San Diego.
- 53:08SPEAKER_02: It could be worse.
- 53:09SPEAKER_02: You know, your teams could suck and you could live in Harrisburg.
- 53:11SPEAKER_02: So I think that's a nice way to fall back and be like, you know, I can go outside and 75 sunny every day.
- 53:15SPEAKER_02: So I don't feel too bad for you, San Diego fans.
- 53:18SPEAKER_02: Virginia Tech, I think you guys could be tortured a little bit.
- 53:21SPEAKER_02: The kick might have gone in.
- 53:22SPEAKER_02: It didn't even seem like you got a proper review.
- 53:24SPEAKER_02: I'm wearing the hat today in solidarity.
- 53:26SPEAKER_02: I'm not a James Franklin guy, but I am a V Tech guy.
- 53:29SPEAKER_02: That's a tough way to lose a ball game, especially one that was a it was titled as a play out of the playoff game.
- 53:36SPEAKER_02: The loser would be eliminated from playoff conversations.
- 53:39SPEAKER_02: And I'm not so sure Pitt is going to be anywhere near the playoff conversation by the time the season ends.
- 53:44SPEAKER_02: But at this point, if you're a 5-0 ball club, you get ranked, you start to make your way into some of those conversations, it's now a completely different picture for Virginia Tech.
- 53:52SPEAKER_02: So I'll pour one out for those hokies as well.
- 53:54SPEAKER_01: It's a good call, Sean.
- 53:56SPEAKER_01: Um yeah, I'd be interested to see how far Pitt can really go.
- 54:00SPEAKER_01: Like it's always interesting with the ACC, and like you got Miami who's in there, but then like, let's say Miami doesn't win the ACC title, and then you have this weird Duke situation of last year, and like who's gonna make it in?
- 54:10SPEAKER_01: Like, if they're all just kind of fighting for second in in terms of relevance out of the ACC.
- 54:16SPEAKER_02: For sure.
- 54:16SPEAKER_02: And Pitt also lost their starting quarterback in that game, so they won, but did they really win?
- 54:20SPEAKER_02: He towards ACL, Mason Heinschel, so he's out for the year, or they're kind of dead as well.
- 54:24SPEAKER_02: So it's yeah, it's a weird one.
- 54:26SPEAKER_02: I I don't think anybody really won that Friday night affair.
- 54:29SPEAKER_02: Mark, to round out the show, we've got a fun segment we're bringing back.
- 54:32SPEAKER_02: It is Did You See This?
- 54:34SPEAKER_02: It can be sports related, it might not be.
- 54:37SPEAKER_02: I have a bunch to run through for you, and if you have any for me, you could hit me on the back end.
- 54:42SPEAKER_02: I'll start with one I know you've seen is the Kings, the Sacramento Kings reporters speaking out of school about Benjamin Simmons during one of the press conferences.
- 54:52SPEAKER_02: They were caught on a hot mic.
- 54:54SPEAKER_02: They thought the room was silent, they just were having a casual conversation.
- 54:58SPEAKER_02: They started calling Ben Simmons cringe, but then they mentioned how fine he was and how good looking he is.
- 55:05SPEAKER_02: They went on to call Zach Levine a prick, but they said he's super attractive as well.
- 55:11SPEAKER_02: What happened to journalistic integrity?
- 55:14SPEAKER_02: We need to get our guy the worm out on this beat.
- 55:16SPEAKER_01: In 2026, you gotta just imagine there's a hot mic every single place around you.
- 55:21SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 55:21SPEAKER_01: In everything that you do.
- 55:23SPEAKER_01: I think, like, especially as a journalist, like you have to have seen a microphone there, like in just assuming it might be on.
- 55:29unknown: Yeah.
- 55:30SPEAKER_01: And, you know, if you don't have something nice to say, don't say it because you never know what might get back to you as well.
- 55:35SPEAKER_01: And but I will say this I am intrigued by Ben Simmons' return to the National Basketball Association.
- 55:42SPEAKER_01: And it does seem like there's a handful of guys who have kind of revived their careers on the Kings and made some noise.
- 55:48SPEAKER_01: So I'm interested to see what he comes back with.
- 55:51SPEAKER_01: Um is it the same old Ben?
- 55:52SPEAKER_01: I think it's probably gonna be that way.
- 55:54SPEAKER_01: But fresh off a couple of years stint uh fishing in Australia, I'm wondering if his mind is right.
- 55:59SPEAKER_01: He's ready to go, he's got his passion back.
- 56:01SPEAKER_01: Uh, we'll see.
- 56:02SPEAKER_01: But yeah, I think in the realm of journalistic integrity, it's definitely not a great look for the folks out in Sacramento.
- 56:08SPEAKER_02: Uh, I'll go one step further, Mark.
- 56:09SPEAKER_02: I think not, I don't think Ben Simmons is cringe.
- 56:11SPEAKER_02: I think he's one of the worst people on earth.
- 56:13SPEAKER_02: I think he's genuinely a bad guy.
- 56:15SPEAKER_02: I hate his guts.
- 56:16SPEAKER_02: I think he's just the worst of the worst.
- 56:19SPEAKER_02: I don't think he'll find any success in Sacramento on the basketball court.
- 56:22SPEAKER_02: I think his best attribute might be his looks, and they kind of got that one dead on.
- 56:26SPEAKER_02: The only problem is they can't say that as team beat reporters or whatever they were.
- 56:30SPEAKER_02: They can't say that.
- 56:31SPEAKER_02: I could sit here and say, Ben Simmons, good-looking guy, prick.
- 56:35SPEAKER_02: Now, I also want to jump in and say, what was Buddy doing, the male reporter who got it in on this conversation?
- 56:42SPEAKER_02: He started saying, I don't know, he didn't look like your type.
- 56:44SPEAKER_02: What are you doing, buddy?
- 56:46SPEAKER_02: Settle down.
- 56:46SPEAKER_02: That's almost more damning than what the girls were saying, because that's a whole different dynamic that we shouldn't even dive into.
- 56:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's uh that's that might be for another day.
- 56:57SPEAKER_02: And then I do have to pose the question, what would have happened if this was at a WNBA press conference and a couple of dudes were sitting around saying, Oh, what a smoke show this player is?
- 57:07SPEAKER_02: I don't think it would have gone over so so well.
- 57:09SPEAKER_01: No, and that's why I said like you no matter what, no matter what whether it's NBA, WMBA, or whatever you're reporting on, or what if you don't have something nice to say, you just keep it to yourself.
- 57:21SPEAKER_01: It's it's too much of a a risk nowadays to say something like that.
- 57:26SPEAKER_02: And if you do have something nice to say, but it's only about how a person looks, you could keep that one in the chamber too.
- 57:31SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 57:32SPEAKER_02: I don't think it should be contents of character, not necessarily just physical appearance.
- 57:36SPEAKER_02: So I I think that's a crazy story to start the NBA season, but it got me in the mood, got me in the mood for more association.
- 57:42SPEAKER_02: So that'll be in the weeks to come.
- 57:44SPEAKER_02: Uh Mark, also, did you see uh this past weekend, Tom Kim, uh the golfer, he wins gold uh in the Asian games to earn a military exemption.
- 57:55SPEAKER_02: So a little bit of background for listeners who might not know, uh, all able-bodied South Korean men must complete a mandatory 18 to 21 months of military service before they turn 28 years old.
- 58:10SPEAKER_02: So if you're a male growing up in South Korea before you turn 28, you need to do 18 to 21 months in the military.
- 58:16SPEAKER_02: There are a couple of ways to get an exception to this.
- 58:19SPEAKER_02: One of the ways is to win any medal in the Olympics, which okay, yeah, geez, anything else?
- 58:25SPEAKER_02: That's pretty hard to do.
- 58:26SPEAKER_02: Just win any medal in the Olympics, be one of the best athletes in the world.
- 58:28SPEAKER_02: Okay, that's a high bar.
- 58:30SPEAKER_02: Another way is to win gold in the Asian Games, which, again, only gold, not bronze or silver are gonna get you out of this.
- 58:37SPEAKER_02: You need to win gold.
- 58:38SPEAKER_02: So that's tough as well.
- 58:39SPEAKER_02: You gotta be the best in all of Asia at a specific athletic event.
- 58:43SPEAKER_02: Another way to get it out of this is to become a renowned classical musical artist or just a well-esteemed artist in general.
- 58:52SPEAKER_02: That is up to the discretion of I don't know who.
- 58:54SPEAKER_02: I don't know who decides if you're in that category or not.
- 58:57SPEAKER_02: But BTS, the K-pop band, they were able to get a postponement for their service until they turn 30 because they're seeing such smashing success.
- 59:06SPEAKER_02: But they aren't out of it yet.
- 59:07SPEAKER_02: They're gonna have to go and fulfill this commitment when they turn 30.
- 59:10SPEAKER_02: They just kick the can down the road.
- 59:12SPEAKER_02: They didn't do it yet.
- 59:13SPEAKER_02: Other exemptions are if you're a PhD candidate of or a researcher or you have a medical hardship waiver of sorts.
- 59:20SPEAKER_02: Mark, I think Tom Kim deserves a lot of credit.
- 59:23SPEAKER_02: Back against the wall, facing a military sentence.
- 59:25SPEAKER_02: He says, I'm just gonna go and win gold so I don't have to pick up a rifle.
- 59:28SPEAKER_01: I, you know, didn't know this happened.
- 59:32SPEAKER_01: I knew about Tom Kim, but I didn't realize he won this week to be able to avoid the service.
- 59:37SPEAKER_01: And congratulations to him.
- 59:38SPEAKER_01: That that's that's really cool.
- 59:40SPEAKER_01: Um I'm sure he's elated and relieved.
- 59:43SPEAKER_01: Um, do we know how close he was?
- 59:45SPEAKER_01: I remember he was like getting to the point where he was almost at the age.
- 59:50SPEAKER_01: Stacking during like one of the last few majors of the year.
- 59:53SPEAKER_01: So I don't know, like it's it seemed like he was really up against the wall.
- 59:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I don't know either if they're firm on that 28-year-old deadline.
- 1:00:01SPEAKER_02: It seems like Sung J M and some of these other guys have kind of been draft dodgers.
- 1:00:06SPEAKER_02: I don't know if they how they got out of it, but they seem to have found ways to maneuver out of this mandatory military service.
- 1:00:13SPEAKER_02: So I I know Tom Kim is under 28 years old, but he is close.
- 1:00:17SPEAKER_02: I want to say he's 26 or 7.
- 1:00:20SPEAKER_02: So yeah, you're right.
- 1:00:22SPEAKER_02: I mean, his back is against the wall.
- 1:00:24SPEAKER_02: And to win, I couldn't imagine how shaky, how shaky my hands would be on the putting green, knowing it's either make this or we're doing a year and a half in the military.
- 1:00:33SPEAKER_01: I mean, I can't even make a three-foot putt with no pressure on me, let alone Correct.
- 1:00:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:00:38SPEAKER_02: I'm a mental midget with five bucks on the line between buddies, let alone picking up a gun and joining the military.
- 1:00:45SPEAKER_02: I remember one of Tottenham's best ever players, Youngman's son.
- 1:00:48SPEAKER_02: He won gold with South Korea as the captain in the Asian games, and he got out of it, but he still had to do a two-week kind of crash course on what it was like to be in the military.
- 1:00:57SPEAKER_02: And there were some pictures that came out of him holding the rifle, and he was just all smiles.
- 1:01:01SPEAKER_02: Just love seeing that.
- 1:01:02SPEAKER_02: So they take this commitment seriously.
- 1:01:03SPEAKER_02: I'm glad to see Tom Kim avoid it if that's what he wanted to do.
- 1:01:07SPEAKER_02: Mike, another big story mark.
- 1:01:10SPEAKER_02: Mike Tomlin Minecraft.
- 1:01:12SPEAKER_02: Did you see this?
- 1:01:13SPEAKER_02: I did not.
- 1:01:14SPEAKER_00: I talked to them.
- 1:01:15SPEAKER_02: You didn't.
- 1:01:16SPEAKER_02: So uh Minecraft is apparently uh a game where you create your own world.
- 1:01:21SPEAKER_02: I I I don't know much about it, I've never dabbled, but you're able to uh build things and I guess you could build cities.
- 1:01:28SPEAKER_02: Well, Mike Tomlin, apparently for the last 15 or so years, has been going home after work and building uh the most complex and intricate city you'll ever see.
- 1:01:38SPEAKER_02: He put out a 10 plus minute video on his YouTube channel going into detail about what is in his city.
- 1:01:45SPEAKER_02: Mark, he has fish tanks in people's apartments and their high-rises.
- 1:01:48SPEAKER_02: He makes sure each apartment room has enough lighting in it.
- 1:01:52SPEAKER_02: He's going into detail I didn't even know was possible.
- 1:01:55SPEAKER_02: And I did not peg Mike Tomlin for a guy with a passion of video games like this.
- 1:02:00SPEAKER_01: I'm looking it up right now, like some of the pictures.
- 1:02:02SPEAKER_01: That's unbelievable.
- 1:02:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:02:05SPEAKER_01: I mean, imagine like just all I mean, and he's a great football mind too.
- 1:02:10SPEAKER_01: Imagine all that must be going on up in his head.
- 1:02:12SPEAKER_01: Now I wonder if like I wonder if he mixes his thoughts, right?
- 1:02:17SPEAKER_01: Like, maybe it's third and eight, and you know, does he ever think about a certain play that he's calling, but then is he like, did I fill the fish tank in that apartment?
- 1:02:26SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 1:02:27SPEAKER_01: Or is he like building a city and that's kind of like a reprieve, or maybe he thinks of like great play ideas while he's building the city?
- 1:02:33SPEAKER_01: Or do you think he separates church and state?
- 1:02:35SPEAKER_02: Yeah, well, that's been part of the conversation now, Mark, is a lot of Steelers fans that were aggrieved by Mike Tomlin's performances are saying, well, of course he wasn't a good coach.
- 1:02:43SPEAKER_02: He was playing Minecraft for thousands of hours.
- 1:02:46SPEAKER_02: There's Minecraft experts that said this probably took 15,000 hours to build.
- 1:02:50SPEAKER_02: So yeah, it's a lot of time.
- 1:02:52SPEAKER_02: I'll be the first to say it, but find a new slant.
- 1:02:54SPEAKER_02: My guy was dialed in on his job first.
- 1:02:56SPEAKER_02: We're allowed to have some hobbies and reprieves, you know.
- 1:02:59SPEAKER_02: I I don't have any blame in Mike Tomlin.
- 1:03:02SPEAKER_02: I think he was able to separate church and state, and he was worried about third and eight on third and eight.
- 1:03:06SPEAKER_02: You don't come up with lines like the standard is the standard if you're dabbling in Minecraft mid-press conference.
- 1:03:11SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 1:03:12SPEAKER_02: So I think I think people that are tripping him need to find a new slant.
- 1:03:16SPEAKER_01: I'll tell you this.
- 1:03:16SPEAKER_01: In his next, I mean, I'm sure he's gonna be, if he wants it, in the next interview cycle for head coaches, it will come up by these teams.
- 1:03:23SPEAKER_01: And somebody they're gonna be asking creative questions about it and like try to use some sort of like sports science or analytics to understand the why behind it and you know what what his approach is.
- 1:03:33SPEAKER_01: Like somebody's gonna ask about it, because you know like there's crazy questions that come up in all these interviews.
- 1:03:38SPEAKER_02: For sure, they will ask about it, which I I honestly think I would be, I would be quizzical of it too, but I would just want to learn more about what sparked his interest.
- 1:03:46SPEAKER_02: If I'm like Tomlin, I'm answering show me another coach with as much creativity as me.
- 1:03:50SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 1:03:50SPEAKER_02: If I could design this whole new world, imagine what I could do on third and short.
- 1:03:54SPEAKER_02: So that's that's what I would be telling them.
- 1:03:57SPEAKER_02: But yeah, it's an interesting conversation, I guess.
- 1:04:00SPEAKER_02: Lastly, Mark, I'm gonna move us away from sports to a Did you see this, which is pretty concerning?
- 1:04:04SPEAKER_02: A man of your status who travels as often as you do, you this needs to be on your radar.
- 1:04:09SPEAKER_02: We might have a new plague to worry about.
- 1:04:12SPEAKER_02: I am not sure if you've seen a mnemonic plague incident in Siberia has led to a big quarantine out of Russia.
- 1:04:21SPEAKER_02: Bad, bad, bad.
- 1:04:22SPEAKER_02: It seems like it was made in a lab.
- 1:04:24SPEAKER_02: I've heard that sentence before.
- 1:04:26SPEAKER_02: I don't, I've heard I've heard lab quarantine, virus.
- 1:04:30SPEAKER_02: I've heard all these words before, and it wasn't a fun time for us.
- 1:04:33SPEAKER_02: So I just want to alert the listeners that there's just could be something around the corner that we're not super fond of.
- 1:04:38SPEAKER_01: It's definitely those are not words you love to hear in the best time of the year, fall going into the holidays.
- 1:04:45SPEAKER_01: I will say I'm a little less worried because typically things need to spread if people go there.
- 1:04:52SPEAKER_01: I don't know who's going to Siberia.
- 1:04:54SPEAKER_01: Maybe it's people leaving Siberia.
- 1:04:56SPEAKER_01: And I will also say this hantivirus, big thing.
- 1:04:58SPEAKER_01: People were worried.
- 1:05:00SPEAKER_01: Where's Hantavirus?
- 1:05:01SPEAKER_01: I haven't heard it heard a thing about it.
- 1:05:02SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, you had those two folks that were that got bit by, you know, rats as they were in a uh in a landfill trying to do some bird spotting in Argentina, and then they spread it to a bunch of people on a boat, and everyone was like, well, then they went 18 different directions, and nothing happened, thank God.
- 1:05:19SPEAKER_01: So I'm hoping that we are going that way versus you know the old traditional COVID, and I hope we've maybe learned a thing or two since 2020.
- 1:05:26SPEAKER_02: I do agree with your general notion.
- 1:05:28SPEAKER_02: It usually comes from people migrating from a place and lots of travel, and if it comes from a high traffic area, it's way harder to contain and things of that nature.
- 1:05:39SPEAKER_02: I do think the word plague is a lot scarier than virus.
- 1:05:42SPEAKER_02: Plague scares me.
- 1:05:43SPEAKER_02: Plague, I I think, oh shit, we haven't had one of those in a minute.
- 1:05:47SPEAKER_02: Those come back.
- 1:05:48SPEAKER_02: They can't they came through with a vengeance back in the day.
- 1:05:50SPEAKER_02: I don't want to hear anything about plague.
- 1:05:52SPEAKER_02: So that and the combination of Siberia, they both scare me.
- 1:05:56SPEAKER_02: Scary place, scary word.
- 1:05:58SPEAKER_02: I don't know if you've heard about it, but I just To alert you, make sure you're aware.
- 1:06:02SPEAKER_01: It's it is good to know.
- 1:06:03SPEAKER_01: And you know, I I had I want to kind of pay you back off that with a couple, well, you know, one big did you see this?
- 1:06:08SPEAKER_01: And it's scary as well.
- 1:06:09SPEAKER_01: And I don't like it.
- 1:06:10SPEAKER_01: Um, I don't like the thought of it, but and it happens to be happening to one of my favorite teams and new athletes on my favorite team, and it is LeBron James commuting to New York City in a helicopter.
- 1:06:24SPEAKER_01: I'm not a helicopter guy.
- 1:06:25SPEAKER_01: I don't want to get in one, I don't want to be near one at all.
- 1:06:29SPEAKER_01: Too many bad things happen with him, and I don't love the idea of him commuting that way.
- 1:06:33SPEAKER_01: Like, I would I would be okay with us closing down one lane on the New Jersey Turnpike permanently and letting somebody drive 150 miles an hour up with LeBron over a helicopter.
- 1:06:43SPEAKER_01: So I just they're scary.
- 1:06:45SPEAKER_01: I don't I don't like the idea of them, and especially for for LeBron.
- 1:06:48SPEAKER_02: I did see that he was living in New York, but I didn't see that it was definitely a helicopter.
- 1:06:53SPEAKER_02: I'm with you.
- 1:06:54SPEAKER_02: Give him the LeBron James through way on the New Jersey highway.
- 1:06:58SPEAKER_02: Fuck it.
- 1:06:58SPEAKER_02: I don't care.
- 1:06:59SPEAKER_02: Just get there safely, LeBron.
- 1:07:00SPEAKER_02: One piece.
- 1:07:01SPEAKER_02: And if it's rainy and stormy, guess what?
- 1:07:03SPEAKER_02: We don't need you that day.
- 1:07:05SPEAKER_02: Work from home.
- 1:07:06SPEAKER_02: I trust you, you'll get your shots up if you get home, Jim.
- 1:07:08SPEAKER_02: I I don't think, even if it's a regular season basketball game, skip it.
- 1:07:12SPEAKER_02: I think we're fine.
- 1:07:14SPEAKER_02: I I like that you brought that to the forefront.
- 1:07:16SPEAKER_02: Also, would it kill you if you signed with the Philadelphia 76ers to pick up a place in Philly?
- 1:07:21SPEAKER_02: I mean, God.
- 1:07:22SPEAKER_02: Okay, a Ritz.
- 1:07:23SPEAKER_02: A Ritz called it.
- 1:07:24SPEAKER_02: Can we give them a room just for some you know bad weather?
- 1:07:27SPEAKER_02: Or at least get through the winter months.
- 1:07:29SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 1:07:30SPEAKER_02: When we get to March or April, sure.
- 1:07:32SPEAKER_02: Use the chopper.
- 1:07:33SPEAKER_02: February with some ice on the ground.
- 1:07:36SPEAKER_02: Where are we landing this thing?
- 1:07:37SPEAKER_02: I I don't I don't love it.
- 1:07:39SPEAKER_02: And I did want to bring up, it's gonna end badly, that Sixers experiment.
- 1:07:43SPEAKER_02: I know you were trying to shift people's focus to, oh, well, Philly, we might not have the Eagles, we might have the Phillies, so we have the Sixers season.
- 1:07:49SPEAKER_02: That's gonna end terribly.
- 1:07:50SPEAKER_02: Now, I don't think it's gonna have anything to do with helicopter.
- 1:07:53SPEAKER_02: The season's not going to go well because something will happen.
- 1:07:55SPEAKER_02: I was thinking along the lines of a May Joel Embiid injury, a Jalen Brown temper tantrum, one of those types of things.
- 1:08:03SPEAKER_02: But now that you brought this into the equation, I hope, I hope this is the last time we speak of it.
- 1:08:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah, me too.
- 1:08:09SPEAKER_01: And also, it's sponsored by fanatics.
- 1:08:12SPEAKER_01: Like, that seems a little gimmicky.
- 1:08:14SPEAKER_01: Can we get him like a top-of-the-line helicopter if he's gonna go in there?
- 1:08:17SPEAKER_01: Like, why are we using it as a marketing stunt?
- 1:08:19SPEAKER_01: Like, it's just got bad news written all over it, and I don't even I don't even want to think or talk about it.
- 1:08:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah, how about we get one sponsored by the United States Air Force?
- 1:08:26SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
- 1:08:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah, how about that?
- 1:08:27SPEAKER_02: What about one of those?
- 1:08:29SPEAKER_01: I would trust that I'd be fine with him taking a blackhawk.
- 1:08:32SPEAKER_01: Like that's US military, that that's fine.
- 1:08:34SPEAKER_01: I'd like to get out of here with the Fanatics helicopter.
- 1:08:37SPEAKER_01: Come on.
- 1:08:39SPEAKER_02: Michael Rubin, this freaking guy.
- 1:08:40SPEAKER_02: He's still he's still pulling all the strings.
- 1:08:42SPEAKER_02: What else do you have for me?
- 1:08:45SPEAKER_01: I think the last thing that I would think of too is the uh just diving further into the Brewer's Padres game with the ball hitting the roof.
- 1:08:55SPEAKER_01: It's so interesting in baseball specifically, how you can have completely different ground rules for stadiums.
- 1:09:00SPEAKER_01: Like football, it's it's a hundred-yard field, it's 50 yards wide, it's the same field.
- 1:09:06SPEAKER_01: Yes, there's turf and grass and whatever, but like how are we just how are we in a sport where like there's just a a million steel beams at the top of a stadium that can affect what happens and if it's a hit or an out.
- 1:09:19SPEAKER_01: I don't understand.
- 1:09:19SPEAKER_01: And then the next that you play next door and it's completely open.
- 1:09:23SPEAKER_02: I do, I do agree with this.
- 1:09:25SPEAKER_02: Also, Portnoy, Dave Portnoy brought up a good point.
- 1:09:29SPEAKER_02: It should not be to the brewer's benefit that this happened.
- 1:09:32SPEAKER_02: It should be a punishment.
- 1:09:33SPEAKER_02: If you build a stupid stadium, you play stupid games, you win stupid prizes, you build a poorly constructed stadium that has something that could be affected or hit by a baseball, you should be the one punished, not the opposing team.
- 1:09:44SPEAKER_02: And maybe that ball wouldn't have gone out.
- 1:09:46SPEAKER_02: It seemed like Ty France's reaction was that he thought it might have been foul.
- 1:09:50SPEAKER_02: But we don't know.
- 1:09:52SPEAKER_02: And I feel like if I'm the umps in that situation, I'm saying, all right, listen, the rule is that it hit the roof, it came in in play, so we're play it as a live ball.
- 1:10:01SPEAKER_02: He caught it, therefore it's an out.
- 1:10:03SPEAKER_02: I'm looking at it and saying, I'm not giving this guy an out.
- 1:10:05SPEAKER_02: I'm saying it was foul or something.
- 1:10:07SPEAKER_02: I'm giving him another chance in the box.
- 1:10:09SPEAKER_02: It's a horrible, horrible way to lose.
- 1:10:11SPEAKER_02: And now it's come to it rear its ugly head in the middle of a playoff series.
- 1:10:14SPEAKER_02: This isn't one on one sixty-two.
- 1:10:16SPEAKER_02: This is in the middle of crunch time.
- 1:10:18SPEAKER_01: And talk about did you see this?
- 1:10:19SPEAKER_01: There was a uh, they were exchanging the ground rules at home plate before the game, and the Brewers bench coach or whoever it was that was exchanging the ground rules said, quote, I've been here six years and I haven't seen a ball hit the roof yet.
- 1:10:29SPEAKER_01: Well, you called it into existence because it hit one and severely affected the game that night.
- 1:10:35SPEAKER_01: And it was like 70-something degrees and like nice out.
- 1:10:38SPEAKER_01: So there was really no excuse to have the roof closed.
- 1:10:40SPEAKER_01: It didn't make any sense.
- 1:10:41SPEAKER_01: So I don't know if it was a competitive thing or or what, but yeah, just odd that you can have that be such a big impact on the game.
- 1:10:50SPEAKER_02: I'll be honest, I didn't even know it was retractable.
- 1:10:52SPEAKER_02: I thought this was just a dome we were playing in.
- 1:10:55SPEAKER_02: That's that's inexcusable if that's the case, if I'm a Padres fan.
- 1:10:59SPEAKER_02: That's way that's why they were my Torch fans of the week.
- 1:11:01SPEAKER_02: Like I said, you have a nice little bonus that you can just go outside and be like, oh well, life's not that bad.
- 1:11:06SPEAKER_02: But geez who, if I was a diehard, passionate Padres fan, that's a terrible way to start a playoff series.
- 1:11:13SPEAKER_02: And then you follow it up with a walk-off loss in game two, and next thing you know, your season's over because of some steel beams.
- 1:11:20SPEAKER_01: The steel beams to get you every time.
- 1:11:22SPEAKER_02: Mark, that will do it for Did You See This?
- 1:11:25SPEAKER_02: I think we should just wrap it up with any recommendations we have for the fall.
- 1:11:29SPEAKER_02: I kind of want to know you've been doing some traveling.
- 1:11:31SPEAKER_02: I know fall's a cozy time to watch some TV.
- 1:11:34SPEAKER_02: Are there any series you've been getting into?
- 1:11:36SPEAKER_02: Anything you would recommend for this moment?
- 1:11:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'm not like, I wouldn't say that my recommendations are fall themed.
- 1:11:42SPEAKER_01: They're just things I've been into recently.
- 1:11:45SPEAKER_01: So I've been a big fan of all the Reacher series.
- 1:11:48SPEAKER_01: So season four came out recently, so I've I've kind of binged that one on the plane uh back from London.
- 1:11:53SPEAKER_01: And then I'm also a huge fan of The Diplomat.
- 1:11:55SPEAKER_01: I mentioned a couple shows ago, or maybe my first or second one, that I was really into Homeland.
- 1:12:00SPEAKER_01: So I think Diplomat, the Diplomat is on Netflix.
- 1:12:02SPEAKER_01: It's from some of the same writers or creators as Homeland, uh, with Kate Russell, and uh, she's really good in it.
- 1:12:09SPEAKER_01: So those two just love a good like government conspiracy theory show.
- 1:12:13SPEAKER_01: It always keeps you on the edge of your seat.
- 1:12:15SPEAKER_01: So those are are two of the ones that I've been into recently.
- 1:12:18SPEAKER_01: What about you, Sean?
- 1:12:19SPEAKER_02: I love that.
- 1:12:20SPEAKER_02: I I'm only into slow horses right now.
- 1:12:22SPEAKER_02: The I hate to say this.
- 1:12:23SPEAKER_02: I I host this podcast, I host a podcast about pop culture, the replay room.
- 1:12:27SPEAKER_02: Go like, subscribe, where we're gonna talk about movies and TV shows and things of that nature.
- 1:12:31SPEAKER_02: And I'm very bad at committing to and watching series.
- 1:12:34SPEAKER_02: So I really need to get better at that.
- 1:12:36SPEAKER_02: The only show that I've been able to, over the last couple of years, really sit down, watch, and enjoy in its entirety is Slow Horses.
- 1:12:43SPEAKER_02: They're in season six now.
- 1:12:45SPEAKER_02: It's coming out every Wednesday night, so that has taken up most of my attention.
- 1:12:48SPEAKER_02: It's once again great.
- 1:12:49SPEAKER_02: Uh I absolutely love the show.
- 1:12:51SPEAKER_02: I think it's funny, I think it's uh edgy.
- 1:12:53SPEAKER_02: It's also just interesting and edgier state drama.
- 1:12:56SPEAKER_02: So uh I'm all in on Soul Horses.
- 1:12:59SPEAKER_02: Uh that would be my first recommendation if you haven't gotten into that.
- 1:13:02SPEAKER_02: That would be get into that.
- 1:13:03SPEAKER_02: Aside from that, I'm just trying to read some spooky-ish books, some Stephen King, things, suspense, thrillers, things just trying to take in the spooky season.
- 1:13:12SPEAKER_02: I will be doing some Halloween themed movies when I have some free time on the weekend nights coming up because, you know, I like to enjoy this time of year when it comes up.
- 1:13:21SPEAKER_02: The only problem is, like we talked about all episodes, there's so much going on in the world of sports that it's hard to find any time to really watch anything else.
- 1:13:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think I'm with you.
- 1:13:31SPEAKER_01: It's hard to dive into TV when there's literally sports on every single night, sometimes going until late at night and you want to catch up on, you know, the Thursday night game, the Monday night game, whatever.
- 1:13:40SPEAKER_01: You know, and then you have maxion on Tuesdays that you obviously need to lock in on.
- 1:13:43SPEAKER_01: So, really, the amount of time that you can put towards episodes is not great.
- 1:13:46SPEAKER_01: Um, but I'll tell you this, and we should, you know, as we think about future topics or future episodes, I'm gonna give a little teaser in here.
- 1:13:53SPEAKER_01: Fall dishes.
- 1:13:54SPEAKER_01: Um my wife Anna makes a fantastic dish, uh, lasagna soup.
- 1:13:59SPEAKER_01: It's really easy to make, it's a few ingredients, and man, it makes a lot of soup, so you have a lot of you know leftovers for the future.
- 1:14:05SPEAKER_01: And you just sit there with a bowl, it's like deconstructed lasagna with some like chicken broth and tomato, and it's fantastic.
- 1:14:13SPEAKER_01: You just sit there on the couch on a cozy fall day with a candle and a bowl of lasagna soup.
- 1:14:18SPEAKER_01: It hits.
- 1:14:18SPEAKER_01: So we'll talk about fall dishes and holiday themed dishes as you know in the future.
- 1:14:22SPEAKER_01: But just wanted to recommend that and shout that out for people to look into.
- 1:14:25SPEAKER_02: I love that, Mark.
- 1:14:26SPEAKER_02: I love that as a teaser.
- 1:14:28SPEAKER_02: I would love a bowl of that soup, to be honest.
- 1:14:29SPEAKER_02: Lasagna soup.
- 1:14:30SPEAKER_02: I've only had it a few times, and I'm sure Anna's is way better than the one I had very recently, actually.
- 1:14:35SPEAKER_02: Trader Joe's does a lasagna soup with turkey.
- 1:14:38SPEAKER_02: And I had that, it was fine.
- 1:14:40SPEAKER_02: It was it was good even passable, you know what I mean?
- 1:14:42SPEAKER_02: It was non-offensive, fine, good.
- 1:14:44SPEAKER_02: I think Anna's would blow it out of the water.
- 1:14:46SPEAKER_02: So next time I'm around, I might request some soup be made.
- 1:14:50SPEAKER_02: But this is soup season.
- 1:14:52SPEAKER_02: This is absolutely soup season, chili, things of that variety.
- 1:14:56SPEAKER_02: This is the time to pump them out.
- 1:14:57SPEAKER_02: You want to be eating with the fork, with the spoon, it's that time of year for hardy meals.
- 1:15:02SPEAKER_01: You know what?
- 1:15:03SPEAKER_01: We should do a uh a draft, a soup draft.
- 1:15:06SPEAKER_01: I don't know if there's enough soups out there, but a soup draft might be a good one.
- 1:15:09SPEAKER_01: There there's certainly there's certainly a lot.
- 1:15:12SPEAKER_02: When you start thinking about all the different types of soup, there's a lot.
- 1:15:14SPEAKER_02: You can probably squeeze a draft out of it.
- 1:15:16SPEAKER_02: It's not a bad idea.
- 1:15:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:15:18SPEAKER_02: I don't I don't need that one bit.
- 1:15:19SPEAKER_01: So I don't make I don't make the rules for the podcast.
- 1:15:21SPEAKER_01: I just come on and support.
- 1:15:22SPEAKER_02: So no, which we appreciate.
- 1:15:24SPEAKER_02: So, Mark, I appreciate you joining as always.
- 1:15:27SPEAKER_02: Anything else before we head out?
- 1:15:29SPEAKER_01: No.
- 1:15:30SPEAKER_01: Well, like and subscribe.
- 1:15:31SPEAKER_01: Pass us along to your friends.
- 1:15:33SPEAKER_01: We got the replay room.
- 1:15:34SPEAKER_01: Uh we got friends on football.
- 1:15:35SPEAKER_01: Sean, appreciate all the great work that you're doing and uh excited to tune into others.
- 1:15:40SPEAKER_02: Well, thank you very much for the kind words.
- 1:15:42SPEAKER_02: Thank you as always for coming on.
- 1:15:44SPEAKER_02: We do appreciate it.
- 1:15:45SPEAKER_02: I know the listeners will as well.
- 1:15:47SPEAKER_02: Listeners, thank you all for tuning in.
- 1:15:50SPEAKER_02: We appreciate it.
- 1:15:50SPEAKER_02: Hit the like and subscribe on your way out.
- 1:15:52SPEAKER_02: Of course, if you haven't told a friend, just tell one friend that you think would like it.
- 1:15:56SPEAKER_02: That would go along with Hey, hey, my funny, handsome friend Sean has a podcast.
- 1:16:01SPEAKER_02: He actually has three on your way out.
- 1:16:04SPEAKER_02: Just tell the like and subscribe to one of them.
- 1:16:06SPEAKER_02: And that's a step in the right direction.
- 1:16:08SPEAKER_02: So we appreciate you tuning in, and until next time, take care.
