- 0:11Hello friends, it's shown here. It's Wednesday, it's the 17th of
- 0:16July. And you, you, my friends, have
- 0:19tapped on play and invited me into your day so that we can
- 0:24read some of God's word together because you and me, that's what
- 0:28we do. I hope you're doing well.
- 0:30It just occurred to me a few days ago that some of you are
- 0:33listening in different time zones and it might not even be
- 0:37Wednesday yet. You might be getting a sneak
- 0:39preview into the future from Tuesday.
- 0:41Wow. If that's you, hello from the
- 0:45future to the past. I hope you're going well.
- 0:47It was a good day. But now us future folk, we're
- 0:51going to continue. This is very confusing.
- 0:53It is Wednesday, my part of the world.
- 0:55So I'm just going to claim that and go forward in a unified time
- 0:59space continuum, if that's alright with you.
- 1:01My brain can't handle anything more than that.
- 1:03It is indeed the week that we are reading, John.
- 1:08Today's the last day that John is going to be walking around
- 1:12free because, well, at the end of today, he is going to head up
- 1:16into that Passover room where John really lingers.
- 1:21And we're going to spend much of next week in that room as he
- 1:25shares all these different thoughts with his beloved
- 1:28disciples. And John captures all of these
- 1:32deep conversations that he has with his disciples as he wants
- 1:36each of us to share in Jesus's most intimate intent because we
- 1:42are to his disciples. And so today, today we have
- 1:47Jesus entering back into that pit of Vipers, heading back into
- 1:52Jerusalem, that terrifying place where there is a price on his
- 1:56head like in the old Westerns, but he goes there nonetheless
- 2:00because that is where the Father needs him to go.
- 2:03So we're gonna go with him to see what it is that he says.
- 2:07As we read together John chapter 12,
- 2:22Six days before the Passover celebration began, Jesus arrived
- 2:26in Bethany, the home of Lazarus, the man he had raised from the
- 2:30dead. A dinner was prepared and
- 2:32Jesus's honour Martha served and Lazarus was among those who ate
- 2:37with him. Then Mary took a 12 ounce jar of
- 2:41expensive perfume made from essence of NARD and she anointed
- 2:45Jesus feet with it, wiping his feet with her hair.
- 2:50The house was filled with the fragrance, but Judas Iscariot,
- 2:54the disciple who would soon betray him, said that perfume
- 2:58was worth a year's wages. It should have been sold and the
- 3:02money given to the poor. Not that he cared for the poor.
- 3:06He was a thief, and since he was in charge of the disciples
- 3:10money, he often stole some for himself.
- 3:14Jesus replied, Leave her alone. She did this in preparation for
- 3:19my burial. You will always have the poor
- 3:22among you, but you will not always have me.
- 3:26When all the people heard of Jesus arrival, they flocked to
- 3:30see him and also to see Lazarus, the man Jesus had raised from
- 3:34the dead. Then the leading priests decided
- 3:37to kill Lazarus too, for it was because of him that many of the
- 3:41people had deserted them and believed in Jesus.
- 3:46The next day the news that Jesus was on the way to Jerusalem
- 3:50swept through the city. A large crowd of Passover
- 3:54visitors took palm branches and went down the road to meet him.
- 3:58They shouted, Praise God, blessings on the one who comes.
- 4:02In the name of the Lord, hail to the King of Israel.
- 4:07Jesus found a donkey and rode on it, fulfilling the prophecy that
- 4:11said, don't be afraid, people of Jerusalem.
- 4:15Look, your king is coming. Riding on a donkey's cult.
- 4:21His disciples didn't understand at the time that this was a
- 4:24fulfilment of prophecy, but after Jesus entered into his
- 4:28glory, they remembered what had happened and realised that these
- 4:32things had been written about Him.
- 4:35Many in the crowd had seen Jesus call Lazarus from the tomb,
- 4:39raising him from the dead, and they were telling others about
- 4:42it. That was the reason so many of
- 4:45them went out to meet him, because they had heard about
- 4:48this miraculous sign. Then the Pharisees said to each
- 4:52other, there's nothing we can do.
- 4:54Look, everyone has gone after Him.
- 4:59Some Greeks of it come to Jerusalem for the Passover
- 5:01celebration, paid a visit to Phillip, who was from Bethsaida
- 5:05in Galilee. They said, Sir, we want to meet
- 5:10Jesus. Philip told Andrew about it and
- 5:13they went together to ask Jesus. Jesus replied.
- 5:17Now the time has come for the Son of Man to enter into his
- 5:21glory. I tell you the truth, unless a
- 5:25kernel of wheat is planted in the soil and dies, it remains
- 5:29alone. But its death will produce many
- 5:32new kernels, a plentiful harvest of new lives.
- 5:36Those who love their life in this world will lose it.
- 5:39Those who care nothing for their life in this world will keep it
- 5:42for eternity. Anyone who wants to serve Me
- 5:46must follow me, because My servants must be where I am, and
- 5:52the Father will honour anyone who serves me.
- 5:56Now my soul is deeply troubled. Should I pray Father save me
- 6:01from this hour? But this is the very reason I
- 6:04came. Father, bring glory to your
- 6:08name. Then a voice spoke from heaven,
- 6:11saying, I have already brought glory to my name and will do so
- 6:17again. When the crowd heard the voice,
- 6:20some thought it was Thunder, while others declared an Angel
- 6:24had spoken to him. Then Jesus told them the voice
- 6:29was for your benefit, not mine. The time for judging this world
- 6:33has come, when Satan, the ruler of this world, will be cast out,
- 6:39and when I am lifted up from the earth, I will draw everyone to
- 6:43myself. He said this to indicate how he
- 6:47was going to die, the crowd responded.
- 6:50We understood from Scripture that the Messiah would live
- 6:53forever. How can you say the Son of Man
- 6:56will die? Just who is the Son of Man
- 6:59anyway? Jesus replied.
- 7:03My light will shine for you just a little longer.
- 7:07Walk in the light while you can so the darkness will not
- 7:11overtake you. Those who walk in the darkness
- 7:14cannot see where they are going. Put your trust in the light
- 7:18while there is still time. Then you will become children of
- 7:22the light. After saying these things, Jesus
- 7:26went away and was hidden from them.
- 7:30But despite all the miraculous signs Jesus had done, most of
- 7:34the people still did not believe in him.
- 7:37This is exactly what Isaiah the prophet had predicted.
- 7:41Lord, who has believed our message?
- 7:44To whom has the Lord revealed his powerful arm?
- 7:48But the people couldn't believe. For as Isaiah also said, the
- 7:53Lord has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts so that
- 7:57their eyes cannot see, and their hearts cannot understand, and
- 8:02they cannot turn to me and have me heal them.
- 8:07Isaiah was referring to Jesus when he said this because he saw
- 8:11the future and spoke of the Messiah's glory.
- 8:15Many people did believe in him, however, including some of the
- 8:19Jewish leaders, but they wouldn't admit it for fear that
- 8:22the Pharisees would expel them from the synagogue.
- 8:25For they loved human praise more than the praise of God.
- 8:30Jesus had shouted to the crowds. If you trust me, you are
- 8:34trusting not only me, but also God who sent me.
- 8:38For when you see me, you are seeing the One who sent me.
- 8:43I have come as a light to shine in this Dark World, so that all
- 8:48who put their trust in me will no longer remain in the dark.
- 8:53I will not judge those who hear me but don't obey me, for I have
- 8:58come to save the world and not to judge it.
- 9:01But all who reject me in my message will be judged on the
- 9:05day of judgement by the truth I have spoken.
- 9:08I don't speak on my own authority.
- 9:11The Father who sent me has commanded me what to say and how
- 9:15to say it, and I know His commands lead to eternal life,
- 9:22so I say whatever the Father tells me to say.
- 9:35Jesus, thank you for your words. Thank you for your description
- 9:41of your own crucifixion and death, and that for you.
- 9:45The most important action through all of this is that you
- 9:49describe that as you are raised up from the earth, you will draw
- 9:54everyone to yourself. Not that you will finally be
- 9:58vindicated, or that you will be proven right, or that you will
- 10:02gain victory over sin and death, but that you will draw everyone
- 10:08to yourself. Jesus, your heart is so big and
- 10:14so focused on being reunited with us.
- 10:20Thank you that you go through all of this, that this plan.
- 10:24From the very outset, the goal was always to draw us back to
- 10:30you, back into your fold so that we could rest with you in your
- 10:37eternal Kingdom. And so we begin that right now.
- 10:41Lord, we offer ourselves to you. We submit to you your rule and
- 10:47your glory, and we pray that we would live our lives in a way
- 10:53that honours You and ashes in your Kingdom.
- 10:58And we pray all of this in your saving, loving name, Jesus.
- 11:03Ah, man.
