- 0:00Speaker 1: I saw this story yesterday and read a little bit
- 0:02Speaker 1: more about it, and it is fantastic to see that
- 0:05Speaker 1: a new cafe and opshop in Darwin, aiming to provide
- 0:09Speaker 1: a training space for special education students at Henbury's School
- 0:13Speaker 1: has opened now. The facilities are going to help students
- 0:16Speaker 1: develop skills in food and beverage preparation and customer service,
- 0:20Speaker 1: equipping them to the workforce. Now joining me on the
- 0:24Speaker 1: line to tell us a little bit more about the
- 0:26Speaker 1: initiative is the Henbri School Principal Sarah Corey. Good morning
- 0:30Speaker 1: to you, Sarah.
- 0:32Speaker 2: Good morning Katie.
- 0:33Speaker 1: Are you going yeah, really good? So great to have
- 0:35Speaker 1: you on the show.
- 0:37Speaker 2: Thank you for inviting me.
- 0:38Speaker 1: Sarah, tell us a little bit more about these new facilities.
- 0:44Speaker 3: Wow, they're at.
- 0:45Speaker 2: The Village shopping center in Casina and we have an
- 0:49Speaker 2: opportunity shop and write directly decided is our new cafe
- 0:53Speaker 2: and it's called Henbury Printing.
- 0:55Speaker 1: How wonderful. Paint a bit of a picture for us.
- 0:58Speaker 1: What does it all look like in.
- 1:01Speaker 2: Oh, well, it's actually the new facilities are actually just beautiful.
- 1:06Speaker 2: We've had BTC Constructions work with us to bring our
- 1:11Speaker 2: vision to life. Really but you know, it's been over
- 1:15Speaker 2: ten years in the making. You know, way back in
- 1:19Speaker 2: twenty ten, we started out at the Karma Shopping Center
- 1:23Speaker 2: just as an op shop, and this came out of just,
- 1:27Speaker 2: you know, off the cuff comment by Tim Wicks, one
- 1:29Speaker 2: of the senior teachers at the time, to the principal
- 1:32Speaker 2: at the Chime, Carolyn Edwards, and said, oh, look, you know,
- 1:36Speaker 2: we want to find some work training placements and work
- 1:39Speaker 2: experience for our students. And it was a little out there,
- 1:43Speaker 2: and he said, oh, why don't we just open our
- 1:45Speaker 2: own op shop? And Karen sort of thought about it
- 1:48Speaker 2: for a while, Oh, that might not be a bad idea, So,
- 1:52Speaker 2: you know, from community community generosity, we started out. So
- 1:57Speaker 2: we started out with the Karma Shopping Center and Lapira
- 2:01Speaker 2: owned a shop there that was empty, and then they
- 2:04Speaker 2: wanted that they needed that space back, and so then
- 2:06Speaker 2: we moved over to Baggott Road and then of course
- 2:10Speaker 2: that was the old Milner Shopping Center and they wanted
- 2:14Speaker 2: to close that down and build what they've got there now.
- 2:18Speaker 2: And so still one of our sessos at the time
- 2:21Speaker 2: found the space at Henry on Aralia. So we use
- 2:26Speaker 2: that for ten years and then in twenty nineteen. We
- 2:30Speaker 2: also got the building next door, which was the old
- 2:34Speaker 2: Surfli Saving building and then we turned that into a cafe. Yeah,
- 2:40Speaker 2: and now we've made the big move this year to
- 2:43Speaker 2: the building shopping center because it's so much closer to
- 2:46Speaker 2: where Henbry School is. It's so much more accessible for
- 2:49Speaker 2: our students. Yeah, it wouldn't happen without our community. You know,
- 2:56Speaker 2: we're part of the community. Our people were able to
- 3:00Speaker 2: business and know what we're about about.
- 3:04Speaker 1: Good, So we talk us through how it's going to
- 3:06Speaker 1: benefit the students and prepare them for the workforce.
- 3:11Speaker 2: Well, every one of our students have their own individual goals,
- 3:15Speaker 2: so it might be around communication, or it might be
- 3:19Speaker 2: around building self confidence. But once we have this, they
- 3:23Speaker 2: see this as a real life work experience. So they
- 3:28Speaker 2: go there and they might start off really shy, but
- 3:31Speaker 2: they build their self confidence over time dealing with real customers, building.
- 3:36Speaker 3: Their work skills.
- 3:38Speaker 2: There are things like we run the Barista skill set,
- 3:42Speaker 2: so we put about twenty students.
- 3:44Speaker 3: Per year through that.
- 3:45Speaker 2: We had ties with CDU and run the Retail Certificate
- 3:50Speaker 2: one and two as well, So when they leave Embry School,
- 3:55Speaker 2: our students have all these skills. So then they can
- 3:58Speaker 2: move on to their future pathway that that's volunteer work,
- 4:01Speaker 2: whether that's paid employment, whether that's moving on to another
- 4:06Speaker 2: area out there, so that they're building these skills from
- 4:09Speaker 2: the time they join him by school. How incredible, amazing
- 4:14Speaker 2: and it's really exciting and.
- 4:16Speaker 1: It's it is fantastic because it is equipping young people
- 4:19Speaker 1: for the workforce or for whatever they choose to do
- 4:23Speaker 1: and giving them those skills today sort of undertake qualifications
- 4:27Speaker 1: and gain certificates and things like that as well, Sarah,
- 4:30Speaker 1: or how does how does it work?
- 4:31Speaker 2: From that perspective, they're a certain co award of our students,
- 4:36Speaker 2: depending on where they are in their learning journey, will
- 4:39Speaker 2: participate in the Brewster courses, in the.
- 4:41Speaker 3: Retail courses, but also Katie, we have.
- 4:44Speaker 2: Other things that happen at school that would work and
- 4:48Speaker 2: the sewing program as well, and students prepare gifts and that,
- 4:54Speaker 2: so we've got a gift gifts that are also sold
- 4:58Speaker 2: at the shop.
- 4:58Speaker 3: I reckon.
- 4:59Speaker 1: I've had a couple of those. I've had some nice
- 5:01Speaker 1: beautiful tetawels from there.
- 5:03Speaker 2: Actually photography too, some nice magnetcy frieze.
- 5:07Speaker 3: They go then also participate.
- 5:09Speaker 1: In that, Sarah I love this, you know, I just
- 5:13Speaker 1: think it's to give I need to. I would love
- 5:17Speaker 1: to come down for a coffee because I just think
- 5:19Speaker 1: it is so important that you know that our kids
- 5:21Speaker 1: have opportunities like this. It must you must end up
- 5:26Speaker 1: with the biggest smile on your face at the end
- 5:28Speaker 1: of the day when you see kids that are going
- 5:30Speaker 1: through that process of doing their training and maybe making
- 5:33Speaker 1: their first you know, SOI latte or cappuccino or something
- 5:36Speaker 1: for the first time as well.
- 5:39Speaker 2: Look, Katie, you know I'm not a big cry that.
- 5:41Speaker 2: When I'm walking and when we've had our first soft opening,
- 5:45Speaker 2: you know, my eyes just well up. It's just so amazing.
- 5:48Speaker 2: And those students you can see the change in them.
- 5:52Speaker 3: Yeah, it's just it's really amazing.
- 5:54Speaker 1: How incredible. Now I understand as well that there was
- 5:58Speaker 1: a lot of fundraising that when into actually making this
- 6:02Speaker 1: a reality.
- 6:03Speaker 3: Oh yeah.
- 6:04Speaker 2: Throughout the years there has been like we we've had
- 6:07Speaker 2: the Henry Corporate Luncheon for over ten years, the hel
- 6:09Speaker 2: It cost Henry Corporate Luncheon, and then we had a bit.
- 6:13Speaker 3: Of a hiatus because of COVID.
- 6:16Speaker 2: But we are running the Henry Corporate Luncheon on the
- 6:17Speaker 2: first of December this year, just letting all of our
- 6:22Speaker 2: listeners know it. And last year were actually the recipients
- 6:31Speaker 2: of the Darwin Airport Development Group golf fundraising day and
- 6:37Speaker 2: so there was a substantial amount of sixty thousand dollars
- 6:41Speaker 2: from there. What has gone to outfitting the new shops
- 6:45Speaker 2: as well? And you know also cosh nt investments have
- 6:51Speaker 2: helped us along the way.
- 6:52Speaker 3: How wonderful denting out.
- 6:54Speaker 2: The shops as well. Yeah, you know, we couldn't do
- 6:56Speaker 2: this just by ourselves. We've had to rely on the
- 7:00Speaker 2: community support and still rely on community support to you
- 7:03Speaker 2: to help us keep this initiative alive.
- 7:06Speaker 1: Sarah, I've got emails and messages coming through. Hey, Katie,
- 7:09Speaker 1: can you ask exactly where the location is in the
- 7:11Speaker 1: kaz village people want to go.
- 7:14Speaker 2: Yeah, so if you know the CA's village, it's not
- 7:17Speaker 2: Kazarina Square, Catherine a Village. It's a small and smaller
- 7:19Speaker 2: shopping center where the new McDonald's is. And if you
- 7:23Speaker 2: just walk in there, past past the past calls, you'll
- 7:27Speaker 2: fee it's Henry Training Precinct where we're loud and proud
- 7:31Speaker 2: and you won't miss us.
- 7:33Speaker 1: How wonderful now, Sarah, Before I let you go. What
- 7:36Speaker 1: has been the response from the students. How are the
- 7:39Speaker 1: students feel like?
- 7:41Speaker 2: They are just extremely proud? I mean if you heard
- 7:44Speaker 2: them talking yesterday when people are asking the question, they're
- 7:47Speaker 2: just beaming with pride. They know they're part of something
- 7:51Speaker 2: amazing and they really like sharing this story.
- 7:55Speaker 1: For you, as a principal, how important is it to
- 7:58Speaker 1: actually be able to you know, to give them an
- 8:01Speaker 1: opportunity like this.
- 8:03Speaker 3: Oh, it's incredibly important. It's it's our work.
- 8:07Speaker 2: And I know it's the right work for what we're doing,
- 8:11Speaker 2: and our parents know as well, and they really appreciate
- 8:16Speaker 2: what we can provide.
- 8:18Speaker 3: Yeah, it's wonderful.
- 8:20Speaker 1: It is really wonderful. Well, Sarah, I really appreciate you
- 8:23Speaker 1: having a chat with me this morning. I know that
- 8:25Speaker 1: school principles are very busy, so thank you for taking
- 8:28Speaker 1: the time to have a chat with us.
- 8:29Speaker 2: It's not a problem, than Katie. Thank you.
