SPEAKER_01: Welcome to Haunted Ozark Theater.
0:20
SPEAKER_01: H O T, your hot horror podcast.
0:25
SPEAKER_01: And we're going to talk today about straight to video.
0:30
SPEAKER_01: Straight to the videos.
0:31
SPEAKER_01: Or streaming.
0:32
SPEAKER_01: Skipped the theater and went straight to home video or streaming.
0:38
SPEAKER_02: As the kids would call it nowadays.
0:40
SPEAKER_01: Nowadays.
0:41
SPEAKER_01: We'll we'll dive into that here in just a little bit.
0:45
SPEAKER_01: But we got to do this day in horror history.
0:47
SPEAKER_01: What do you got for us?
0:48
SPEAKER_01: Well, you know what?
0:50
SPEAKER_01: It was a light day as far as horror stuff goes.
0:53
SPEAKER_01: I did find a couple little interesting tidbits, but they're more like pop culture than they are horror.
1:00
SPEAKER_02: Well, I've got something that might surprise you because I get a little digging.
1:02
SPEAKER_02: Okay, what's your really got me to horror history?
1:05
SPEAKER_02: Okay, what's your this day?
1:07
SPEAKER_02: It's pretty monumental for us.
1:09
SPEAKER_02: Okay.
1:09
SPEAKER_02: So May 21st.
1:11
SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
1:12
SPEAKER_02: This is the date that uh it's considered the very first horror movie of all time.
1:18
SPEAKER_02: And that's the strange case of Dr.
1:19
SPEAKER_02: Jekyll and Mr.
1:20
SPEAKER_02: I premiered in Chicago, and it cost a dime to see.
1:23
SPEAKER_01: The original re uh silent film.
1:27
SPEAKER_01: Yep.
1:28
SPEAKER_01: 1906 or something like that?
1:30
SPEAKER_01: 1908.
1:30
SPEAKER_01: 1908.
1:31
SPEAKER_01: Okay, so this is the day that came out, huh?
1:33
SPEAKER_01: Yes, sir.
1:34
SPEAKER_01: Okay.
1:35
SPEAKER_01: Well, the release date that I have, like I said, it's more pop culture, but today is the day that Empire Strikes Back came out.
1:43
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
1:44
SPEAKER_01: The best Star Wars movie.
1:45
SPEAKER_02: I would agree.
1:46
SPEAKER_02: That would definitely be the best.
1:48
SPEAKER_02: But here's another one that Luke kisses his sister usually.
1:53
SPEAKER_01: Well, technically, she kisses him.
1:55
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
1:56
SPEAKER_01: Uh, here's one more that I thought was interesting.
1:58
SPEAKER_01: Today is the birthday of one Thurl Raven's Croft.
2:04
SPEAKER_01: You don't know him, but you know his voice.
2:07
SPEAKER_01: He sung You're a mean one, Mr.
2:10
SPEAKER_01: Grinch.
2:10
SPEAKER_01: Mr.
2:11
SPEAKER_01: Grinch.
2:11
SPEAKER_01: That's his.
2:12
SPEAKER_01: But did you also know what else he did?
2:15
SPEAKER_01: They're great.
2:17
SPEAKER_01: Tony the Tiger?
2:18
SPEAKER_01: He's the Grinch song singer, and he's Tony the Tiger.
2:22
SPEAKER_01: Dude's probably rolling a dude.
2:24
SPEAKER_01: Thorough Ravenscroft.
2:26
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
2:27
SPEAKER_01: So doesn't that's this day in horror history?
2:29
SPEAKER_01: Is he still alive?
2:30
SPEAKER_01: I don't think so.
2:31
SPEAKER_01: I think he's a oldie.
2:34
SPEAKER_01: He's an oldie, but he was a goodie.
2:36
SPEAKER_02: I never knew that.
2:37
SPEAKER_02: I thought it was the same.
2:38
SPEAKER_02: I didn't know that either.
2:39
SPEAKER_02: I always thought the guy who sang the Grinch was the dude who sang that uh I sold my soul to the company stories.
2:46
SPEAKER_02: Oh I thought that was him.
2:48
SPEAKER_02: It could be the same guy.
2:49
SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
2:50
SPEAKER_02: Someone out there listening knows.
2:53
SPEAKER_01: Can't believe they don't know that.
2:56
SPEAKER_01: Cool.
2:56
SPEAKER_01: Uh, what have you been rewatching?
2:59
SPEAKER_02: Uh I haven't got a lot.
3:00
SPEAKER_02: Uh, from what I watched with my uh my direct to videos, I watched a couple.
3:06
SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
3:07
SPEAKER_02: Just uh watch them and I I want to save it if that's okay.
3:10
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, absolutely.
3:11
SPEAKER_01: Well, same.
3:13
SPEAKER_01: I I re-watched a couple that were straight to video releases.
3:18
SPEAKER_01: So and I'm gonna save those for the segment as well, but I will talk about what I went and saw in the theater.
3:25
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, tell us that is obsession.
3:28
SPEAKER_01: And and it lives up to the hype.
3:31
SPEAKER_01: Okay, well for the first time in a long time, the hype is justified and it lives up, and I would say maybe even surpasses the hype.
3:41
SPEAKER_02: Now I haven't seen it.
3:42
SPEAKER_02: Paul went and took his daughters a couple of nights ago.
3:46
SPEAKER_02: What kind of right are we in for with this movie?
3:49
SPEAKER_02: What to expect?
3:50
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so I don't want to give anything away.
3:52
SPEAKER_01: I'm not gonna spoil it because it is brand new.
3:54
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but I will say that uh it's it's a very simple, straightforward script, but it's really tight, really well done, really well thought out.
4:09
SPEAKER_01: Um heavy tension, heavy discomfort, heavy just atmosphere.
4:19
SPEAKER_02: Like you feel it the whole movie kind of thing.
4:22
SPEAKER_01: Like definitely an edgier seat kind of a ride.
4:25
SPEAKER_01: Nice.
4:26
SPEAKER_01: It's got two or three really good moments of gore, but it's not that bloody gory of a movie, but it has two or three good moments of it.
4:37
SPEAKER_01: But overall, it's more about that unsettling feeling that you're gonna have.
4:44
SPEAKER_01: And the real star of the show here is the performances.
4:49
SPEAKER_01: Um the the actors just absolutely shine in this movie.
4:56
SPEAKER_01: Right.
4:57
SPEAKER_01: Fantastic performances.
4:58
SPEAKER_02: And you were telling me earlier that the uh the female lead, I mean almost Oscar performance.
5:05
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, that's what I've been hearing leading up to it was the the she deserves an Oscar for the performance that she turned in.
5:13
SPEAKER_01: Have you seen her in anything else horror-wise?
5:15
SPEAKER_02: Can that's off the top of your head?
5:17
SPEAKER_02: Okay.
5:17
SPEAKER_01: Her name's Indy Navaretti.
5:20
SPEAKER_01: Um the only thing I recognized that she's been in is uh, well, two things.
5:30
SPEAKER_01: She was on the Netflix show 13 Reasons Why, which I haven't seen, but I've heard of it.
5:35
SPEAKER_01: Okay.
5:36
SPEAKER_01: And she was on the CW show, Superman and Lois.
5:40
SPEAKER_01: Okay.
5:41
SPEAKER_01: Um just, I think, bit parts in both of those little shows.
5:46
SPEAKER_01: This is her first movie, her first starring role.
5:51
SPEAKER_02: This is pretty much a real new cast, isn't it?
5:53
SPEAKER_02: And there's not a lot of talking to build names in this.
5:57
SPEAKER_02: I don't think.
5:58
SPEAKER_01: No, I didn't.
5:59
SPEAKER_02: Which is awesome to see, yeah.
6:00
SPEAKER_01: The only person I recognized in the whole movie is Andy Richter.
6:04
SPEAKER_02: Andy Richter's name?
6:05
SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
6:06
SPEAKER_02: Wow.
6:06
SPEAKER_02: Okay.
6:07
SPEAKER_01: He plays a small part as the he owns the store where all the main characters work.
6:12
SPEAKER_02: Okay.
6:12
SPEAKER_01: So he's like their boss.
6:14
SPEAKER_01: Andy Richter.
6:15
SPEAKER_02: Conan O'Brien.
6:16
SPEAKER_01: He's got a small little part in it.
6:17
SPEAKER_01: But other than that, yeah, Indy Navaretti, she is the breakout star.
6:23
SPEAKER_01: Um, I would say, you know, it's early, it's May, and you know, award season isn't till next February, right?
6:32
SPEAKER_01: Um, so but I would say uh as of right now, yeah.
6:36
SPEAKER_01: I would I would say give her uh recognition, give her a nod.
6:42
SPEAKER_02: And you're definitely saying don't wait, go watch this great.
6:45
SPEAKER_01: Go see this.
6:46
SPEAKER_01: I would go see it.
6:47
SPEAKER_01: Um I will say the the thing that I guess surprised me is that she's not really the main character.
6:55
SPEAKER_01: Um, the main character is the guy.
6:59
SPEAKER_01: Uh I can't remember his character's name.
7:03
SPEAKER_02: From what I was seeing just from the trailer and the clip, I want like it's really him going through all this and struggling with what he's decided to do, right?
7:11
SPEAKER_02: Like and it's killing him literally.
7:13
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
7:14
SPEAKER_01: He's he's uh it's it's a be careful what you wish for story, 100%.
7:21
SPEAKER_02: Is it Twilight So?
7:24
SPEAKER_02: Okay, nothing like that.
7:26
SPEAKER_01: Maybe a little bit.
7:27
SPEAKER_01: Um, but yeah, so he's the main character, and he does a fantastic job as well.
7:34
SPEAKER_01: Um, but she just eats up every scene she's in.
7:38
SPEAKER_01: And um she's she's definitely the the shining star of the show, yeah.
7:44
SPEAKER_02: One question I want to ask.
7:45
SPEAKER_02: I haven't done we haven't done this before.
7:47
SPEAKER_02: Okay.
7:47
SPEAKER_02: Last horror movie we went and watched on the big screen was Dolly.
7:50
SPEAKER_02: Yeah so pick one or the other.
7:52
SPEAKER_02: Which one are you taking?
7:53
SPEAKER_02: Dolly or obsession?
7:55
SPEAKER_01: Obsession's better, yeah.
7:56
SPEAKER_01: Most definitely.
7:57
SPEAKER_01: Wow, most definitely.
7:58
SPEAKER_02: I gotta probably watch it this weekend then okay.
8:01
SPEAKER_01: This this is probably the best one I've seen so far in 2026 in the theater.
8:07
SPEAKER_01: Okay, yeah, probably nice.
8:09
SPEAKER_02: Um, it was good, it was really good for you to say it lived up to the hypes enough for me because yeah, both of us have been let down so many times.
8:18
SPEAKER_02: So that is really awesome to hear.
8:20
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that that's the number one thing.
8:22
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and if you recommend it, I'm I'm definitely gonna go watch it.
8:25
SPEAKER_01: You'll enjoy it.
8:26
SPEAKER_01: Everybody in the theater seemed to enjoy it.
8:29
SPEAKER_01: And um, oh, I did uh I was talking to you earlier about um so Curry Barker wrote and directed this.
8:39
SPEAKER_01: Um, he's got another movie already done in Can.
8:44
SPEAKER_01: Um I believe it's called Anything But Ghosts, right?
8:48
SPEAKER_01: And it's about these two people who have a ghost hunting investigation type business, but they're total frauds.
8:57
SPEAKER_02: I love this primlus.
8:59
SPEAKER_01: But they get a call to go investigate a house that has actual ghosts in it, and so now they have to contend with the fact that they're up against real ghosts and they have literally no experience.
9:10
SPEAKER_02: Do you think it'll be horror comedy or straight like psychographical?
9:14
SPEAKER_01: I'm not sure, but I I will tell you that it's Aaron Paul and Bryce Dallas Howard are the two investigators who think that ghosts aren't real.
9:25
SPEAKER_01: They're ripping people off, and they're gonna find out but they're gonna find out that ghosts are actually real, and it's a Curry Barker, another original story, and directed by him.
9:35
SPEAKER_02: And not to get too far off, and I have read, and I've from his mouth he is gonna be directing a Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
9:43
SPEAKER_02: So I am this kid's got a bright future.
9:45
SPEAKER_01: He does, he does, and uh this is what happens when you make a movie for under a million dollars, and then it makes over 30 million dollars in opening weekend.
9:56
SPEAKER_02: And what we were saying earlier, we are in a horror resurgence right now, and it's because of the Sat Craigers.
10:02
SPEAKER_02: This kid, we need more of this.
10:04
SPEAKER_02: It's fresh blood, new ideas, we're not retreading the same thing.
10:09
SPEAKER_02: So this is we're in a great time to be more fans, guys.
10:12
SPEAKER_01: We you know, we had uh Robert Eggers, and we had Ari Aster kind of light that torch maybe 10 to 15 years ago, and then yeah, we've had Zach Kregers on the scene recently doing some really awesome stuff.
10:28
SPEAKER_02: Barbarian Weapons, next Resident Evil.
10:31
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and now we got guys like Curry Barker um, you know, following in those footsteps.
10:38
SPEAKER_02: And a little side note, if you want to see a little short film he directed on YouTube, it's called Milk and Cereal.
10:43
SPEAKER_01: Milk and cereal cereal spelled like cereal killer killer, right?
10:46
SPEAKER_02: Good movie.
10:47
SPEAKER_02: Check it out.
10:47
SPEAKER_02: It's it's a short film.
10:49
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's only like 12, 14 minutes long or something like that.
10:53
SPEAKER_01: But um, yeah, that was his his big his big uh moment that got him the opportunity to make a feature, and this is that feature obsession.
11:04
SPEAKER_02: And he didn't miss.
11:05
SPEAKER_01: He didn't miss.
11:07
SPEAKER_01: It's really good.
11:08
SPEAKER_02: Love to hear it.
11:08
SPEAKER_02: Okay, really good.
11:10
SPEAKER_02: All right, Paul.
11:10
SPEAKER_02: So you want to get on to the today's topic?
11:13
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we're gonna talk about straights of video.
11:15
SPEAKER_01: So let's just define it really quick.
11:17
SPEAKER_01: And I I think we touched on it at the end of last episode.
11:22
SPEAKER_01: Um not every movie comes out in the theater, it just doesn't.
11:29
SPEAKER_01: Uh now today that's pretty universally known as things go straight to Netflix or things are to be originals or Hulu.
11:40
SPEAKER_01: Things were made for Hulu or whatever.
11:42
SPEAKER_01: But when we were children, I mean, uh, there was basically two ways for videos to be or movies to be seen.
11:51
SPEAKER_01: One was on the theater screen, the other was what they called direct-to-video, which means it came out on VHS.
11:59
SPEAKER_01: It never came out in the theater, but it came out on VHS.
12:02
SPEAKER_02: And dude, I know you had to be like me, teenager, young kid, and you didn't know, and you're looking through these videos.
12:08
SPEAKER_02: My god, they made a sequel to my favorite horn.
12:10
SPEAKER_02: It's I didn't even know about it.
12:11
SPEAKER_02: Right, because you know, exactly.
12:13
SPEAKER_02: That was for the good days.
12:14
SPEAKER_01: And that was that's also like if you weren't reading like Fangoria back then or something, you know, you didn't know until you saw it on the shelf.
12:22
SPEAKER_01: You know, you might uh if you were into those um, you know, kind of trade trade magazines, then maybe you would uh hear like, oh yeah, they're making a sequel to whatever, and it's going straight to video.
12:36
SPEAKER_01: But so um there's a couple of reasons why they might do this, and and it always boils down to dollars and cents, you know, whenever we're talking Hollywood, that's really what it boils down to.
12:49
SPEAKER_01: But a movie could maybe uh not hold enough promise in the studio's eyes to release it to the cinema, so they just release it straight to video.
13:04
SPEAKER_01: Um, because it costs money to make a movie, but it costs a lot of money to release a movie too.
13:09
SPEAKER_02: Very true.
13:09
SPEAKER_02: Well, Jeff, uh I'm glad you did that because that I'm gonna jump right to my first movie with what you just said.
13:14
SPEAKER_02: Okay, go for it, folks.
13:16
SPEAKER_02: Go for it.
13:17
SPEAKER_02: Mine, and I can remember 1993, and the reason I found out about this is sci-fi would have little segments about what's coming out that year.
13:26
SPEAKER_02: Sci-fi channel.
13:27
SPEAKER_02: Sci-fi channel.
13:28
SPEAKER_02: Okay, and uh Jason goes to hell.
13:30
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and they were like, direct a video, not gonna be on the theater.
13:33
SPEAKER_02: And I was like, what the heck?
13:34
SPEAKER_02: Because every Friday had been on the theater, you know, and yeah, so uh this was the first one I can remember.
13:42
SPEAKER_01: Okay.
13:42
SPEAKER_02: Going and my my father got it for me, he rented it for me.
13:46
SPEAKER_02: Okay, and as a kid, I'd I'm I was kind of confused because you know, Jason goes to hell, Jason's are Jason's only in it that you see for like 10 minutes and then he's eating hearts and yeah, switching bodies, and I just remember like only watching the parts where Jason's actually Jason, like in the beginning and at the end.
14:04
SPEAKER_01: So and that's another thing you could do with videos.
14:07
SPEAKER_01: You could like forward and rewind and and just watch your favorite parts here.
14:12
SPEAKER_01: Um yeah, so when when the when the studio maybe doesn't have enough faith in it.
14:17
SPEAKER_01: Do you think that's what's the problem with it?
14:20
SPEAKER_01: I don't know about that one.
14:21
SPEAKER_01: I just know that it usually doesn't go straight to video back then anyway, unless there was a reason.
14:29
SPEAKER_01: And a lot of horror films did choose that route intentionally so that they could avoid cuts or edits that they didn't want to submit to.
14:40
SPEAKER_01: Um but it typically had to do with dollars and cents, and it typically had to do with studio confidence in the product, you know.
14:50
SPEAKER_01: Um, so a lot of times like a movie would come out and it would do well enough to warrant the production of a sequel, but not well enough to warrant the sequel being released in the theater.
15:05
SPEAKER_02: So is that kind of what like with Rob's uh trilogy, you know, the House of a Thousand Corpse?
15:12
SPEAKER_02: And they shelf that.
15:13
SPEAKER_02: That was, I think, filmed a couple years prior.
15:16
SPEAKER_01: And then it was like three or four years prior, yeah.
15:19
SPEAKER_02: And I know there was problems, and then Devil's Rejects was a big hit.
15:23
SPEAKER_02: Box office and commercial, you know, everything critically.
15:26
SPEAKER_02: And then, but I I think it's all the problems he had with the Weinsteins, and where he's like, I'll just fund my own movie and make three to hell however I want.
15:33
SPEAKER_02: No one's gonna tell me otherwise, right?
15:35
SPEAKER_01: Definitely with that in that instance, but even three from hell came out in the theater.
15:40
SPEAKER_02: It had a but not like you would expect, right?
15:42
SPEAKER_02: It had like a a a week and then it went out.
15:45
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it wasn't a wide release, and it wasn't like it was in the theater for a whole month or anything like that.
15:50
SPEAKER_01: I think it was limited for sure to certain cities and also maybe just the one weekend, but that did come out, and there's a lot of movies that I in my research that I thought I'll bet you that was a straight to video, and then I'll realize that it did have a limited release, so it doesn't count.
16:11
SPEAKER_01: So I nixed a few off of my list.
16:13
SPEAKER_01: Okay, um, but yeah, so nowadays it's much more prominent, it's much more uh expected and normal for a movie to be made with big studio money and then go straight to a streaming service.
16:32
SPEAKER_01: Right.
16:33
SPEAKER_01: That is totally normal now.
16:35
SPEAKER_01: It's the equivalent of straight to video, it's the modern day equivalent, but uh it's not done anymore for the same reasons, and I don't think that there's the stigma anymore surrounding those things, like it was the stepchild of the exact like oh, it's not gonna be as good, it's not gonna hold up.
16:54
SPEAKER_01: That's just not true.
16:55
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, back when we were kids, straight to video meant less than, yes, sir, but that doesn't mean that now, straight to streaming doesn't necessarily mean it's gonna be less than, not at all.
17:08
SPEAKER_01: Um, but a lot of these straight to video movies that we remember have some struggles that isn't to say that they aren't great fun, right?
17:20
SPEAKER_01: And especially, you know, if you're into the nostalgia of them.
17:24
SPEAKER_02: I was gonna say that's the key.
17:26
SPEAKER_02: That's the key.
17:26
SPEAKER_02: It really is.
17:27
SPEAKER_01: I think that's what keeps them selling and even streaming still to this day, is a lot of them, you know.
17:34
SPEAKER_01: But now we're in the age where there's a lot of straight to streaming stuff that is just gold.
17:42
SPEAKER_01: It is, and it's hard to stay on top of everything.
17:45
SPEAKER_01: It's very hard.
17:45
SPEAKER_01: A lot of stuff slips through the cracks.
17:47
SPEAKER_01: High production, great directing, great scripts, great acting.
17:52
SPEAKER_01: Um, you'll find that on straight to streaming stuff all the time.
17:56
SPEAKER_01: But we're gonna talk about some straight to streaming uh masterpieces.
18:00
SPEAKER_01: You wanna go?
18:01
SPEAKER_01: But we're also gonna talk about some of these movies that are, you know, uh, like you said, kind of the stepchildren of the of the franchise.
18:12
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'll start because I'm gonna start with well, first I'm gonna start with um a few that we've already talked about, and some we talked about very recently.
18:23
SPEAKER_01: Um, I think just last episode, we mentioned the ice cream man with Clint Howard.
18:29
SPEAKER_01: And that was a straight to video release.
18:33
SPEAKER_01: Uh, real quick though, and I didn't remember this.
18:36
SPEAKER_01: Clint Howard obviously was the star.
18:39
SPEAKER_01: Olivia Hussey from Black Christmas was in it.
18:41
SPEAKER_01: Yep.
18:42
SPEAKER_01: Uh David Naughton from American Werewolf in London was in it.
18:46
SPEAKER_01: Sandal Bergman from Hell Comes to Frogtown was in it.
18:50
SPEAKER_01: You wouldn't have Frogtown.
18:52
SPEAKER_01: David Warner from The Omen was in it, and also a baseball player, Steve Garvey, was in Ice Cream Man.
19:02
SPEAKER_01: Uh so just quick little bits.
19:05
SPEAKER_01: But we've we talked about Splinter last time, I think.
19:07
SPEAKER_01: That was a straight to video.
19:09
SPEAKER_01: And then a few episodes back, I talked about Pumpkinhead and Pumpkinhead 2.
19:14
SPEAKER_01: Yep.
19:14
SPEAKER_01: Pumpkin Head was a theatrical release.
19:17
SPEAKER_02: See, I have Pumpkinhead 2 on my list.
19:19
SPEAKER_01: Pumpkinhead 2 was not a theatrical release, it was a straight to video release.
19:23
SPEAKER_01: And um Blood Wings.
19:26
SPEAKER_01: Blood Wings, that's right.
19:27
SPEAKER_01: And it's and it officially brought uh Arkansas into the conversation.
19:32
SPEAKER_02: Dude, and you want to talk about stat have you seen it?
19:35
SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah.
19:36
SPEAKER_02: Of course.
19:36
SPEAKER_02: All the whore names in that.
19:38
SPEAKER_02: Even Kane Hodder is in that.
19:40
SPEAKER_01: In one of his earlier performances.
19:43
SPEAKER_02: I I love it.
19:44
SPEAKER_02: I thought the creature was more creeper in this one.
19:46
SPEAKER_01: Everything about it I thought was amped up from the first one.
19:51
SPEAKER_01: Which yeah, just more fun.
19:53
SPEAKER_01: The creature looks creepier.
19:54
SPEAKER_01: Kind of breaks the mold of what we just said because part one was a theatrical release, part two was not, and so the expectation is that everything is gonna be a step down in part two, and it's just not true.
20:08
SPEAKER_01: Part one and two of Pumpkin Head are both sleep on these movies, dude.
20:13
SPEAKER_01: I don't get it.
20:15
SPEAKER_01: I totally agree.
20:16
SPEAKER_01: You're missing out if you haven't seen one or two, and watch them back to back.
20:20
SPEAKER_01: You have a hell of a time.
20:21
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, totally agree.
20:23
SPEAKER_01: Um, also, real quick, these direct videos give people who nest not necess who aren't necessarily movie stars the opportunity to act.
20:35
SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
20:36
SPEAKER_01: And I just mentioned Steve Garvey was in um Ice Cream Man.
20:41
SPEAKER_01: Uh how about LL Cool J and H2O?
20:46
SPEAKER_01: Right?
20:46
SPEAKER_01: It looked like Paul Rudd and Colt of uh uh Yeah, but he's an actual actor though.
20:51
SPEAKER_01: Are you okay?
20:52
SPEAKER_01: I'm talking these are like musicians or athletes.
20:56
SPEAKER_02: Like Chris Chericho in um terrifier.
20:59
SPEAKER_01: Sure, yeah.
21:00
SPEAKER_01: Okay, or uh Snoop Dogg did a movie called Bones.
21:03
SPEAKER_01: Remember that?
21:04
SPEAKER_01: Yes.
21:05
SPEAKER_01: And here's my here's my uh ultimate straight to video pick.
21:11
SPEAKER_01: I'm just gonna go ahead and say it right now.
21:13
SPEAKER_02: Well, okay, wow, you ranked it.
21:15
SPEAKER_02: Okay.
21:15
SPEAKER_01: Well, not I'm not saying the best ever, but this is this one is very near and dear to my heart, and I'm bringing it up right now because it has one of these people who is not an actor in it.
21:25
SPEAKER_01: Um it has Roger Daltrey from The Who, lead singer of The Who, Roger Daltrey.
21:33
SPEAKER_01: This movie was straight to video, 1996, I believe.
21:37
SPEAKER_01: He plays the main villain in it.
21:41
SPEAKER_01: And this was just one that I used to rent again and again and again, and that's Vampirella.
21:47
SPEAKER_01: Oh wow.
21:49
SPEAKER_02: I could see you loving that.
21:51
SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah.
21:52
SPEAKER_01: Well, you know, I'm a big comic book.
21:54
SPEAKER_02: And um I forgot he's the villain in that.
21:57
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
21:57
SPEAKER_02: So I wow that.
22:00
SPEAKER_02: Take me down memory lane.
22:01
SPEAKER_01: I loved the comic book, Vampirella.
22:04
SPEAKER_01: And that movie came out straight to video.
22:08
SPEAKER_01: Talisa Soto plays Vampirella.
22:10
SPEAKER_01: You'll recognize her as both a Bond girl and also she was Princess Katana in the Mortal Kombat movies back in the 90s.
22:18
SPEAKER_01: But Roger Daltrey, uh a non-actor, getting a chance to act in a straight to video horror movie.
22:26
SPEAKER_01: And it was his last no, he's been in a bunch of stuff, man.
22:31
SPEAKER_01: But but yeah, Vampirilla, I wore that VCR VHS out.
22:36
SPEAKER_01: I would rent that one again and again from my local video store.
22:40
SPEAKER_01: Do you have it on DVD now?
22:41
SPEAKER_01: I don't.
22:42
SPEAKER_01: I need to get a Blu-ray of it or something.
22:44
SPEAKER_01: But I loved that movie when I was I I guess I was about 18, 17, 18 at the time.
22:50
SPEAKER_01: And I just it was comic book.
22:53
SPEAKER_02: It's right up your like you said everything.
23:02
SPEAKER_01: Um just tickled my fancy.
23:05
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
23:06
SPEAKER_01: And I would rent it and then I'd we all have that movie, don't we?
23:08
SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah.
23:09
SPEAKER_02: We all have that pick.
23:10
SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah.
23:11
SPEAKER_01: Throw me another one.
23:12
SPEAKER_02: Uh uh this is a movie.
23:14
SPEAKER_02: If I had my I mentioned it probably five, six times on our show.
23:19
SPEAKER_02: If I could, I'd talk about it every episode.
23:22
SPEAKER_02: Uh it got pushed under the radar because of when it came out, 2009.
23:28
SPEAKER_02: We had some heavy hitters come out.
23:30
SPEAKER_02: But this movie I talk about all the time, Hills Run Red.
23:32
SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
23:33
SPEAKER_02: And it was Warner Brothers, but it was under the Dark Castle banner, and they put out some some good horror movie, and it just does not get enough credit.
23:42
SPEAKER_02: I always wanted this to be a franchise.
23:45
SPEAKER_02: It didn't make enough money, just how it was came out.
23:49
SPEAKER_02: But it's one of my favorite killers.
23:51
SPEAKER_02: It's got everything I I want in it, the story, the meta, everything.
23:55
SPEAKER_02: I I man, I'm I'm crazy about this film.
23:58
SPEAKER_01: It's a great movie, and it was straight to video, and it was one of those ones where um straight to video, you could always tell.
24:09
SPEAKER_01: I feel like you could always tell by looking at the cover that it was a straight to video.
24:15
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you could.
24:17
SPEAKER_01: And it was the cover that made me rent it.
24:20
SPEAKER_02: The film strip on it, baby facing the girl, Alexis running through there.
24:23
SPEAKER_02: You know how I found out about it?
24:25
SPEAKER_02: Is the day Friday the 13th, 2009, remake came out on Blu-ray.
24:30
SPEAKER_02: Yeah or DVD, I'm sorry, not even I don't know if it was Blu-ray night.
24:33
SPEAKER_02: I bought it, and you know, that's Warner Brothers, and the preview was on, and I went, Well, I've got a like, how do I get this?
24:42
SPEAKER_02: When's it coming out on Key Anger?
24:43
SPEAKER_02: And then I found out it was direct to DVD.
24:47
SPEAKER_01: Okay.
24:47
SPEAKER_01: So yeah, that was that was one I I distinctly remember being in Blockbuster and seeing the covering and picking it for its cover.
24:56
SPEAKER_01: A lot of people say that, and then being very happy with that I chose it.
25:01
SPEAKER_01: It was good, and it is still good.
25:03
SPEAKER_02: It is, I love it.
25:04
SPEAKER_01: Okay, you know how I love me some leprechaun.
25:07
SPEAKER_02: Did you put well I guess you go two, three, what back to Vegas?
25:12
SPEAKER_02: One and two.
25:12
SPEAKER_02: One and two, but one and two to the theater.
25:14
SPEAKER_01: No, one and I know.
25:16
SPEAKER_01: One and two or in the theater.
25:17
SPEAKER_01: Right.
25:18
SPEAKER_01: One and two.
25:19
SPEAKER_01: If you say three, do three came straight to video?
25:22
SPEAKER_01: To Vegas.
25:23
SPEAKER_01: Leprechaun in space came straight to video, and Leprechaun in the Hood came straight to video.
25:28
SPEAKER_01: And I love um and two more with the You can't believe you picked Leprechaun.
25:34
SPEAKER_01: Two more with the non-actors getting acting roles.
25:38
SPEAKER_01: Leprechaun in the Hood has our man Ice T.
25:42
SPEAKER_01: Yep.
25:42
SPEAKER_01: And another who else?
25:44
SPEAKER_01: Uh in that movie?
25:46
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
25:46
SPEAKER_01: There's one more, right?
25:48
SPEAKER_01: Like a rapper kind of a guy?
25:49
SPEAKER_01: Could have sworn there was.
25:51
SPEAKER_01: Maybe.
25:51
SPEAKER_01: I do have another on my list over here of non-actors getting their shot in horror movies.
25:57
SPEAKER_01: Buster Rhymes in Halloween Resurrection.
26:00
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he kicks Michael Myers.
26:01
SPEAKER_02: I hated that.
26:04
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so I had to happen, dude.
26:06
SPEAKER_01: I had to go Leprechaun 3, Leprechaun in Space, Leprechaun in the Hood.
26:11
SPEAKER_01: Those were other straight to video ones that I wore out the tape on.
26:17
SPEAKER_01: Yep.
26:18
SPEAKER_01: I I was I was I was and still am a huge Leprechaun fan, and I'd make no apologies for it.
26:25
SPEAKER_02: I went through a phase in I probably watched it five or six times.
26:30
SPEAKER_02: I remember writing it every weekend.
26:31
SPEAKER_02: But Leprechaun 2, I was hooked on.
26:33
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
26:34
SPEAKER_02: I I don't know why.
26:35
SPEAKER_02: I was just hooked on Leprechaun 2.
26:37
SPEAKER_02: My my sister hated it.
26:39
SPEAKER_02: Everyone, but I was like, man, I love this movie.
26:41
SPEAKER_02: Like I thought for you.
26:43
SPEAKER_02: Remember the the uh the gold cut Jack Pot thing goes through his stomach.
26:46
SPEAKER_02: In the stomach, yes.
26:49
SPEAKER_01: So if I want to sit down and watch a leprechaun movie with you, that's the one you're going to one or two.
26:55
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, fair enough.
26:56
SPEAKER_01: Fair enough.
26:58
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, those the again, uh Vampirella and those three leprechaun movies.
27:05
SPEAKER_01: Uh I wore those tapes out from my local video store for sure.
27:08
SPEAKER_01: Were you kind and rewind?
27:10
SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah.
27:11
SPEAKER_01: My man, good 100%.
27:13
SPEAKER_01: Uh number one, my dad taught me you got to.
27:17
unknown: Yeah.
27:17
SPEAKER_01: But number two, my dad he bought one of those rewinders.
27:21
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we had that too.
27:22
SPEAKER_02: That set on top of your VHS.
27:25
SPEAKER_01: You can like you can you're done with the movie.
27:27
SPEAKER_01: Good days.
27:28
SPEAKER_01: You can eject the movie and you can start the next one while you're rewinding the first one.
27:33
SPEAKER_02: And dude, our dustbuster was right next to it.
27:36
SPEAKER_02: Remember the dustbusters?
27:38
SPEAKER_02: Yes.
27:38
SPEAKER_02: Awesome.
27:39
SPEAKER_01: That's awesome.
27:40
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
27:40
SPEAKER_01: That's so cool.
27:42
SPEAKER_02: Okay, dude.
27:42
SPEAKER_02: Well, I went much more recent with this next pick, and it's uh went straight to Hulu.
27:49
SPEAKER_02: And uh me and my oldest daughter found this, and it was like a Sunday morning, and I was like, let's check this out.
27:56
SPEAKER_02: It's an awesome movie.
27:57
SPEAKER_02: Great practical effects, and that is 2024's Mr.
28:01
SPEAKER_02: Crockett.
28:02
SPEAKER_01: Oh.
28:02
SPEAKER_02: Have you ever seen it?
28:03
SPEAKER_02: No.
28:04
SPEAKER_02: I'll give you a premise here.
28:05
SPEAKER_01: Let's I'm not familiar with this.
28:07
SPEAKER_02: It's so it focuses on a demonic children's show host who kidnaps children and kills their parents.
28:13
SPEAKER_00: Really?
28:13
SPEAKER_02: It is directed by uh Brandon Espy, and it stars Elvis Nakosco.
28:19
SPEAKER_02: I think I'm pronouncing that right.
28:21
SPEAKER_02: But the premise it takes place in 1993, and Mr.
28:23
SPEAKER_02: Crockett is the sadistic television host, and he emerges from the TVs to snatch the mean parents.
28:30
SPEAKER_02: And it is creepy, dude.
28:32
SPEAKER_02: Huh.
28:33
SPEAKER_02: You would love it.
28:34
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it sounds great.
28:35
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
28:35
SPEAKER_01: I love the premise.
28:36
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you'd like it.
28:38
SPEAKER_02: So that one was like, didn't know nothing about it.
28:40
SPEAKER_02: It was on Hulu Original kind of thing, and I was like, let's watch it.
28:44
SPEAKER_02: And we're like, it's it's always good to when you're watching it with a kid or a friend, like, man, that was awesome.
28:49
SPEAKER_02: That was hard watching.
28:51
SPEAKER_01: Awesome.
28:51
SPEAKER_01: I'll definitely check that out.
28:53
SPEAKER_01: Well, one here that I did watch this week.
28:57
SPEAKER_01: Um, and I remember I have vivid remember I have vivid memories of this coming straight to video back in the day.
29:04
SPEAKER_01: I have vivid memories of watching it many times as a young person and loving it back then.
29:12
SPEAKER_01: And watching it recently, wondering why I loved it as much as I did back in the day.
29:21
SPEAKER_01: And that is Puppet Master.
29:24
SPEAKER_02: So whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
29:26
SPEAKER_02: Let's back up with you just said you loved it.
29:29
SPEAKER_02: Back in the day, I loved Puppet Master.
29:31
SPEAKER_02: What Paul, uh, what did you love about it?
29:34
SPEAKER_02: The odd that I was it's the weirdest movies.
29:38
SPEAKER_01: I was 11 when that movie came out.
29:40
SPEAKER_01: Um something about the puppets reminded me of the troll in Cat's Eye.
29:47
SPEAKER_01: Okay.
29:48
SPEAKER_01: I think that was a big part of it.
29:50
SPEAKER_01: I still think the, I don't know if he's the considered the main puppet, but the puppet with the hat.
29:56
SPEAKER_01: The blade with the yeah, he's got kind of the I know what you did last summer hat and rain slicker thing.
30:02
SPEAKER_01: And he carries the little, he's got the hook on one hand and he's got the knife in the other hand.
30:06
SPEAKER_01: I still think that's an awesome design for the puppet.
30:10
SPEAKER_01: And if I could get a little replica of that puppet, I'm sure you could, I 100% would get him and put him here in the studio.
30:16
SPEAKER_01: Um, but yeah, I just I used to love that movie, and it I I don't remember watching that one on VHS as much as I remember it just coming on.
30:25
SPEAKER_02: Uh that's what I was gonna.
30:26
SPEAKER_02: This were the kind on Saturday and Sunday, and you'd find it on a channel.
30:30
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and it usually played like two or three of them, and it was the kind of movie where I could watch 20 minutes of it, go, okay, walk away, do something, come back, and oh, they'll jump right back in.
30:43
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but I didn't miss it.
30:44
SPEAKER_02: That's how I felt about the puppet master.
30:46
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, there's like five of them or six of them or something.
30:49
SPEAKER_02: I know there's one I had a buddy talking to where they actually show clips of like the first couple of movies in that one just to go back to them.
30:57
SPEAKER_01: Oh, okay.
30:58
SPEAKER_01: I didn't, yeah.
30:59
SPEAKER_01: I I'm sure I saw some of the sequels.
31:02
SPEAKER_01: I definitely haven't seen them all.
31:04
SPEAKER_01: What's the plot?
31:06
SPEAKER_01: Um, the plot is it's again, it's one of these things where no, I can tell you exactly what the plot is because I just watched it.
31:16
SPEAKER_01: But it's one of those things where it's like it was the 80s, and I think there was a lot of drugs being done.
31:23
SPEAKER_01: Um the plot is a hell of a drug.
31:27
SPEAKER_01: There's a guy back in like World War II times, and he has an Egyptian scroll that he can read from the Egyptian scroll and he can bring his puppets to life, and then he can use his puppets to you know do whatever it is that he wants them to do.
31:48
SPEAKER_01: The Nazis come to steal it from him.
31:50
SPEAKER_01: Oh, okay.
31:51
SPEAKER_01: The Nazis try to steal it from him.
31:54
SPEAKER_01: He hides the puppets and the Egyptian scroll in the wall of the hotel, blows his brains out, and then it flashes forward, you know, 50 years later, and there's a group of psychics in the late 80s who have somehow become aware of the puppets and the Egyptian scroll.
32:16
SPEAKER_01: They use their psychic powers to zero in on the hotel, and then they take the hotel apart until they find the puppets and the scroll, and then they start the whole thing over again, and these puppets get out and are causing havoc.
32:32
SPEAKER_01: And it's and you enjoyed this, though.
32:36
SPEAKER_02: When I was like uh 11, 12 years old.
32:41
SPEAKER_01: When I was like 11, 12 years old, I was like, man, this is amazing.
32:46
SPEAKER_01: And when I watched it this week, I'm not gonna say it's bad, but I'm gonna say I'll do it for you.
32:53
SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna say guys, what was I thinking?
32:56
SPEAKER_01: Like, why did I love this so much?
32:58
SPEAKER_01: Um but it but there's a reason why I went straight to video.
33:04
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you know, yeah, and this this is definitely talking bad about whore in this.
33:09
SPEAKER_01: This is definitely a straight to video type of movie.
33:12
SPEAKER_02: It's sci-fi original stuff.
33:14
SPEAKER_01: It didn't, it didn't uh it didn't come out of the gates strong enough to to you know warn't like you said about five or six of them, dude.
33:24
SPEAKER_02: But again, there must be a good following for this.
33:26
SPEAKER_01: There is a huge cult following for these, and again, you know, there's a fine line.
33:33
SPEAKER_01: There's a fine line between, you know, not good enough to get a theatrical release, but good enough to make five or six of them and have them all go straight to video.
33:44
SPEAKER_01: That's pretty it's pretty remarkable when you think about it, the fact that you know, there's this line, and I don't know exactly where the line is, but somebody in the Hollywood system decides this one's going to the theater.
33:59
SPEAKER_02: The big leagues.
34:00
SPEAKER_01: This one's not good enough to go to the theater, but it's good enough to get five or six sequels.
34:04
SPEAKER_01: Right.
34:04
SPEAKER_01: Or this one's not good enough to even get a sequel.
34:08
SPEAKER_02: I do think you watch movies like horror movies on the big screen, you're like, this should have gone right to V V D.
34:13
SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
34:14
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, talking to you on what's doubled my money back.
34:20
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and they're making a sequel.
34:22
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they are.
34:22
SPEAKER_01: So yeah, we'll see.
34:24
SPEAKER_01: But yeah, so Puppet Master is a that's another one that I have I got fond memories of explains a lot about you of Puppet Master back in the day, man.
34:34
SPEAKER_01: Hey, dude, tell me what you like.
34:36
SPEAKER_01: That's what you like.
34:37
SPEAKER_01: My VHS in the 90s, my my VCR in the 90s was getting a constant stream of uh Vampirella and Puppet Master and the Leprechaun sequels.
34:50
SPEAKER_02: Quite a pick of movies.
34:52
SPEAKER_01: And I'm not ashamed of it.
34:54
SPEAKER_02: Let that freak flag fly.
34:56
SPEAKER_01: Not ashamed of it.
34:58
SPEAKER_01: That's the kind of kid I was.
34:59
SPEAKER_01: I love it.
35:00
SPEAKER_01: It's made me into the man.
35:01
SPEAKER_02: It's very alone, ladies.
35:06
SPEAKER_02: Oh no, that's cool.
35:07
SPEAKER_02: I wasn't alone, I had a vampirella.
35:09
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, the leprechaun.
35:12
SPEAKER_02: All right, okay, okay, enough of that funny business.
35:15
SPEAKER_02: Uh, I'm gonna I put all my cards on the table.
35:18
SPEAKER_01: Okay.
35:19
SPEAKER_02: And I'm gonna say this is the greatest direct to DVD, whatever you want to call it of all time.
35:26
SPEAKER_01: Okay, let's see if I agree.
35:27
SPEAKER_01: Because I have one too that I wonder if it's it.
35:30
SPEAKER_01: Crowned as the greatest straight to video movie.
35:34
SPEAKER_02: This is 2007's trigger treat.
35:36
SPEAKER_01: Yes, sir.
35:36
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we're on the same thing.
35:38
SPEAKER_01: We're on the same page about that one.
35:40
SPEAKER_01: Man, I can't I this it should have been in theaters.
35:42
SPEAKER_02: And this is a shame.
35:43
SPEAKER_01: Shout out to Sam on Don Amantis.
35:46
SPEAKER_02: This is his favorite, right?
35:47
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, this is the one he said was his favorite.
35:49
SPEAKER_02: And the little the the thing, the creature is same in that too.
35:53
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, his name is Same.
35:55
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and he's got the rules about Halloween.
35:57
SPEAKER_01: Dude, what a great movie! This is a movie that is phenomenal in every aspect.
36:04
SPEAKER_02: It only gets better every time I watch it.
36:06
SPEAKER_01: It's better every time you watch it.
36:08
SPEAKER_01: It's got big names in it.
36:10
SPEAKER_01: I don't know how this didn't get a theatrical release.
36:14
SPEAKER_01: I don't know how this hasn't had a sequel.
36:16
SPEAKER_01: I don't know how this hasn't spanned or spawned a massive franchise.
36:21
SPEAKER_02: Then we're all great questions.
36:23
SPEAKER_01: All I can tell you is that um it came out, it came straight to video, it made a huge impact.
36:31
SPEAKER_01: It's continued to make a huge impact.
36:33
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
36:33
SPEAKER_01: Kids who weren't alive when this movie came out love it.
36:37
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
36:38
SPEAKER_01: And Sam has become he's everywhere in Halloween now.
36:42
SPEAKER_02: Like uh art.
36:43
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he has become a major Halloween icon.
36:48
SPEAKER_01: At Halloween time, you go into any place that sells Halloween decorations, and you're gonna see a little Sam from Trick-or-Tree.
36:54
SPEAKER_02: And he's got the little sucker, guys.
36:56
SPEAKER_02: If you don't aren't familiar with it, he's got the little um pumpkin.
37:00
SPEAKER_02: What would you uh like a jack-o'land?
37:03
SPEAKER_02: Jack-o'-lanch.
37:03
SPEAKER_02: But he's got a little half-eaten sucker that's a pumpkin.
37:06
SPEAKER_01: It's half-eaten, and the sharp ends are real sharp.
37:09
SPEAKER_01: Sharp, yeah.
37:11
SPEAKER_02: And if you follow the rules, he leaves you alone.
37:13
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, there's certain rules for Halloween, and if you follow the rules, you're good.
37:18
SPEAKER_02: Dude, and that's got everything in it.
37:21
SPEAKER_02: You know, how that flipped, and you think one thing's gonna happen, and then they turn out to be it's got it's I wouldn't call it an anthology film, but it's got a feel to it like that, though.
37:32
SPEAKER_01: It does, it has that anthology feel because it has different episodes that are all happening simultaneously, and then they all kind of get pulled together at the end, and you see how they all connect.
37:45
SPEAKER_01: Great movie, and I'm just baffled that it was direct-to-vide.
37:49
SPEAKER_01: But I I agree with you a hundred percent that if we're given the crown to the greatest ever direct-to-video horror movie, it's gotta be trick-or-treat.
37:57
SPEAKER_02: Because I was gonna say that or Tucker Do.
38:00
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
38:01
SPEAKER_02: But this one just stole it for me.
38:02
SPEAKER_02: It collected everything in that box.
38:05
SPEAKER_01: This is this is a major league movie that somehow just went straight to video.
38:10
SPEAKER_02: It's a must-watch, especially Halloween time.
38:12
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you gotta watch it.
38:13
SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah, gotta watch it.
38:15
SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna throw out one more sequel from back in the day that went straight to video, and that's Tremors 2.
38:22
SPEAKER_02: Very underrated, very underrated, so good.
38:25
SPEAKER_02: They upped the stakes in everything in that movie.
38:28
SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
38:28
SPEAKER_01: And and again, to think that Tremors 1 came out in the theater and did as well as it did, but not well enough to get a theatrical release for the sequel, yeah, kind of mind-blowing.
38:41
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, kind of mind-blowing.
38:43
SPEAKER_02: I totally agree, couldn't agree more.
38:44
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, well, I'll go with your cigarette and I'm gonna go another sequel, okay, and I'm gonna where is it out?
38:49
SPEAKER_02: On my list, I got it not last.
38:55
SPEAKER_02: Cult of Chucky.
38:56
SPEAKER_02: Yep, 2017.
38:58
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and I remember getting this on which if people, kids don't know, Redbox.
39:03
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
39:03
SPEAKER_02: And I wasn't looking, I didn't know much about the movie, and uh re-rented it, and I was like, This is really well done.
39:10
SPEAKER_02: Brad Dwarf's daughter place, the the chick in the wheelchair, the and she does a fantastic job.
39:16
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and I thought it just got I think it'd been over a decade since we had a Chucky movie.
39:20
SPEAKER_01: I think so.
39:21
SPEAKER_01: And I remember being very skeptical about it.
39:25
SPEAKER_01: I was, dude, but I was it was and it won me over.
39:27
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it totally won me over, yeah.
39:30
SPEAKER_01: So I'm gonna step into the realm of of straight to streaming.
39:34
SPEAKER_01: Okay, go ahead.
39:35
SPEAKER_01: Because I've been up until this point, I've been focusing specifically on it.
39:39
SPEAKER_01: Came out on video.
39:40
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but here's the modern day equivalent of that, and um I'll just throw a couple out there real quick that were early Mike Flanagan projects, straight to Netflix, Hush, Hush was great, and Gerald's game.
39:54
SPEAKER_01: Yep.
39:55
SPEAKER_01: Both uh I think you would say Mike Flanagan either got his start or you could say cut his teeth or perfected his craft doing a couple of straight to Netflix films.
40:08
SPEAKER_01: Did that Oculus came out before those, right?
40:13
SPEAKER_01: Uh quite possibly, but didn't Oculus get a theatrical release?
40:18
SPEAKER_02: It was a WWE film.
40:19
SPEAKER_02: It was a WWE film.
40:21
SPEAKER_01: I think it did.
40:21
SPEAKER_02: Okay, it probably didn't write.
40:26
SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
40:27
SPEAKER_01: They they backed it and they put it out in the theater.
40:29
SPEAKER_01: You're probably right.
40:30
SPEAKER_01: Um, so uh yeah, as far as straight to streaming, these were the two early Mike Flanagan projects that went straight to streaming.
40:37
SPEAKER_01: Nice, good.
40:37
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and another one that I've mentioned before that I love, one of my favorite straight to streaming films, American Mary.
40:46
SPEAKER_01: American Mary, yeah.
40:47
SPEAKER_01: Saska Sisters.
40:48
SPEAKER_02: Man, yes.
40:49
SPEAKER_02: And it's got uh the same chick from Catherine Isabel.
40:52
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, great in that dude.
40:54
SPEAKER_01: I love this movie.
40:55
SPEAKER_01: Can't say enough good things about this movie.
40:57
SPEAKER_01: We'll wholeheartedly recommend this movie every time it comes up.
41:01
SPEAKER_01: And that was a straight to streaming release, yeah, and it was it was and is really, really good.
41:08
SPEAKER_02: Very good pick, dude.
41:09
SPEAKER_02: So this next one I got, uh, I think it was remember the channel IFC?
41:14
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it was on here, and it's funny because this film and a house of the thousand corpse is the first time I watched that flipping through, and I found a House of the Thousand Corps.
41:24
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
41:25
SPEAKER_02: The movie I'm talking about here, it's House of the Devil.
41:28
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so good.
41:30
SPEAKER_02: 2009, it's got that babysitter, and it felt like a 70s, 80s throwback to me, right?
41:35
SPEAKER_02: The holy satanic panic, but it just goes off the rail at the end, and the ending's so good, dude.
41:43
SPEAKER_02: No, I I could do a whole show about this on the show.
41:45
SPEAKER_01: I definitely felt like it had, and you're right, it wasn't 80s like slasher, it was 80s Rosemary's baby in a field to me.
41:54
SPEAKER_01: It was 80s.
41:55
SPEAKER_01: Um, like you said, the satanic panic thing is distinctly 80s, but there was still some leftover 70s aesthetic creeping into horror movies at that time.
42:05
SPEAKER_02: Dude, and the people she's baby for babysitting for I I the dude, I always forget his name, but he I'm sure he was the nicest guy in real life.
42:14
SPEAKER_02: I hope he's still alive, but he's the bad guy in Robocop 2, who they take the brain from.
42:19
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and he's also in um but it's not it's Manhunter, where he plays the red dragon.
42:29
SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah, and he's the Hannibal Lecter yes thing.
42:32
SPEAKER_01: Before Anthony Hopkins, yes.
42:33
SPEAKER_01: Yes, yes, you're absolutely right.
42:35
SPEAKER_02: He just good at being a creepo dude, yeah.
42:38
SPEAKER_01: No, you're absolutely right.
42:40
SPEAKER_01: Um IFC, man, that rings back memories for sure.
42:44
SPEAKER_01: I had uh this is this is when we had cable.
42:47
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
42:47
SPEAKER_01: If it was a channel that you had you had on cable, and I remember for me, it was like channel 506 or something like that.
42:56
SPEAKER_01: It's like you know, you you would figure out which channels you like, so you could push them in, then you can remember the numbers, yeah.
43:02
SPEAKER_01: And I remember IFC was like way up there, 506 or something like that, some random way up there number.
43:09
SPEAKER_01: But I would turn that on and I would find horror gyms almost any given at any given time.
43:15
SPEAKER_01: See, I miss that so much.
43:16
SPEAKER_01: I do too.
43:17
SPEAKER_02: I miss those days too.
43:18
SPEAKER_02: I do, and that's how I found this movie also, yeah.
43:20
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so um Netflix has really gone hard with making original horror content, and that's where I was going with this is Fear Street.
43:35
SPEAKER_01: Um they've oh, is it okay?
43:37
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's exactly where I was going.
43:39
SPEAKER_01: But also in the vein of Fear Street, but not related to Fear Street, other than another Netflix original babysitter and babysitter too.
43:49
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, very good, very good um kind of gateway horror, teeny bobber horror films that Netflix just went hard on through a
44:00
SPEAKER_02: Lot of money at it.
44:01
SPEAKER_02: Well, Mick G directed those.
44:03
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
44:03
SPEAKER_01: Got a good good good director, got good stars.
44:06
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, really well done films.
44:08
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
44:09
SPEAKER_01: All five of those.
44:10
SPEAKER_01: Cool kills.
44:11
SPEAKER_01: Great.
44:12
SPEAKER_01: Gateway horde.
44:13
SPEAKER_02: Comedy slash horde.
44:15
SPEAKER_01: Good, like you said, good uh kills, good effects.
44:18
SPEAKER_01: Everything about high production level.
44:20
SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
44:21
SPEAKER_01: Very high production level on all those.
44:23
SPEAKER_02: I forgot about the babysitters.
44:24
SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
44:24
SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
44:25
SPEAKER_02: One and two.
44:25
SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
44:26
SPEAKER_01: They're both great.
44:27
SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
44:27
SPEAKER_02: I'm going to ask you about this movie.
44:29
SPEAKER_02: We've never talked about it.
44:30
SPEAKER_02: It's got a huge cult following.
44:32
SPEAKER_02: And people like they either love it or hate it.
44:35
SPEAKER_02: And this is 2014's house that October built.
44:38
SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah.
44:39
SPEAKER_02: Love this.
44:40
SPEAKER_02: You know, the whole haunted house.
44:41
SPEAKER_02: And I could see me and you being those guys.
44:44
SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
44:44
SPEAKER_02: Like really pushing it, wanting to get to the next, you know, and meeting ones you really don't want to meet like they do in this.
44:51
SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
44:51
SPEAKER_02: And I I love this movie, dude.
44:53
SPEAKER_01: Great movie.
44:53
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
44:54
SPEAKER_01: That's a really good movie, definitely if you haven't seen it.
44:57
SPEAKER_02: Remember the name of the the group, the blue skeleton.
45:00
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
45:00
SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
45:01
SPEAKER_01: Yes, sir.
45:02
SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
45:02
SPEAKER_02: Fun movie.
45:03
SPEAKER_02: And it's been a while since I watched this one.
45:04
SPEAKER_02: So I think that might be my rewatch.
45:07
SPEAKER_01: Okay.
45:07
SPEAKER_01: But yeah, that's a fun straight to streaming adventure.
45:12
SPEAKER_01: You should definitely check it out.
45:13
SPEAKER_01: Uh couple more on my streaming list.
45:17
SPEAKER_01: And we have mentioned these in the past, but let's let's give them their due.
45:22
SPEAKER_01: Another instance of Netflix.
45:25
SPEAKER_01: Um Going Hard in the Paint, you know.
45:30
SPEAKER_01: And both of these are full core masterpieces.
45:33
SPEAKER_01: One is the ritual.
45:35
SPEAKER_02: You have rituals so good.
45:36
SPEAKER_01: And the other one is Apostle.
45:38
SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
45:39
SPEAKER_02: I I think I'd go with Apostle, but they're both great.
45:42
SPEAKER_02: But Apostles, man, they're tough.
45:45
SPEAKER_02: Both of these movies are right up your alley that full horror.
45:47
SPEAKER_01: Very scary movies.
45:50
SPEAKER_01: Um folk horror, Netflix original.
45:55
SPEAKER_01: Just well done.
45:56
SPEAKER_01: They are really, really well done.
46:00
SPEAKER_02: Really good.
46:00
SPEAKER_02: Um, who is that actor uh from Apostle?
46:05
SPEAKER_02: The main he's he's the yeah, Dan Stevens, I think, is yeah, he you know where I know him the most?
46:11
SPEAKER_02: Because I have a little girl, Beauty and the Beast.
46:13
SPEAKER_02: Beauty and the Beasts, yeah.
46:14
SPEAKER_01: Yep, he's the human version of Beast.
46:16
SPEAKER_02: But he goes through so much of that movie, dude.
46:19
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
46:19
SPEAKER_01: He goes through so much of that.
46:21
SPEAKER_01: And he acts his tail off the street.
46:23
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, brother, he does.
46:24
SPEAKER_01: He the Apostle, check it out.
46:27
SPEAKER_01: It is so good.
46:28
SPEAKER_01: So good.
46:29
SPEAKER_01: Good pig.
46:29
SPEAKER_01: And um, both of those were Netflix originals straight to streaming, and uh just really, really good.
46:36
SPEAKER_01: And I'll give I've I think I've shouted Netflix out before.
46:40
SPEAKER_01: They will bring foreign horror straight to streaming.
46:46
SPEAKER_01: Now I didn't include these specifically because they may have gotten theatrical releases in their home countries, but there's a lot of great uh foreign horror.
46:57
SPEAKER_01: Some of them are English, some of them are not.
46:59
SPEAKER_01: Right.
47:00
SPEAKER_01: And Netflix brings them straight to streaming in America, and they're really good at that.
47:06
SPEAKER_01: Netflix is really good at finding these um foreign horror gems and then and then giving us the opportunity to watch them.
47:15
SPEAKER_01: Right.
47:15
SPEAKER_01: I highly recommend that you don't sleep on.
47:19
SPEAKER_02: No, because some of those go, like you said, what heart in the paint.
47:22
SPEAKER_02: Is that the phrase you that's very true, though?
47:25
SPEAKER_02: I mean, they I mean Yeah.
47:27
SPEAKER_01: Like I remember one, I'm sh this one got a lot of love and attention.
47:32
SPEAKER_01: Um, Veronica.
47:34
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
47:35
SPEAKER_01: It's in it's a Spanish film, it's in Spanish.
47:39
SPEAKER_01: Uh it was made in Spain, and it takes place in Spain, and you gotta watch subtitles, but it's a great movie.
47:48
SPEAKER_01: And I I I would be willing to bet that it got a theatrical release in Spain, but for us, the only way to see it is to watch it on Netflix, right?
47:57
SPEAKER_01: And so Netflix, you know, does us all a favor and brings these foreign horror films that are fantastic that we wouldn't otherwise get to see.
48:06
SPEAKER_01: Brings them straight to streaming for us.
48:08
SPEAKER_02: One that's coming to my mind is uh don't let me say trained to train to boost on.
48:14
SPEAKER_02: Yes, yeah, and I watched that.
48:16
SPEAKER_02: A guy at work told me I watched it about four weeks ago, the ending killed me.
48:19
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but man, a great movie.
48:22
SPEAKER_01: Fantastic movie, great zombie flip guys.
48:25
SPEAKER_01: So I think that one's that one might have gotten a theatrical release.
48:30
SPEAKER_01: Not here though, right?
48:31
SPEAKER_01: Not in the state, you think it got into the state?
48:33
SPEAKER_01: I'm not sure if it did.
48:34
SPEAKER_01: I it might have eventually it might have been one of those ones that built momentum and then eventually did get maybe a limited theatrical run.
48:42
SPEAKER_01: But I could be wrong.
48:43
SPEAKER_01: I could be it could have maybe only ever been on streaming, but that one did get big.
48:48
SPEAKER_01: That one did end up being a lot of attention.
48:51
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it built a big word of mouth fallen for sure.
48:54
SPEAKER_01: But yeah, that's a great film.
48:55
SPEAKER_01: And there's there's just a lot of stuff like that.
48:57
SPEAKER_01: There's a lot of Australian horror.
48:59
SPEAKER_01: I know you're a big fan of Australian horror.
49:01
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, there's a lot of good.
49:02
SPEAKER_02: It's got a lot of good ones.
49:03
SPEAKER_01: There's a lot of good Australian stuff that Charlie's Fall Straight to Streaming.
49:08
SPEAKER_02: Boar.
49:09
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean, really good ones.
49:10
SPEAKER_01: Housebound is one that I watched that was uh on Netflix that I loved, and it was you know, I don't know if I would have heard of it or have been able to see it if it wasn't for straight to streaming.
49:24
SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
49:24
SPEAKER_01: So that's that's the modern day version of uh straight to video.
49:29
SPEAKER_01: Um, but yeah, that's all I got on my list.
49:32
SPEAKER_01: And I I was saving trick or treat for last because it is really you can't go straight to video and have hope for more than that.
49:42
SPEAKER_01: No, it it's it had to me it had the biggest uh impact and did the best job.
49:48
SPEAKER_02: And if you watch that, if you never have watched it, what you you wouldn't know.
49:52
SPEAKER_02: You'd be like, oh, this came out the you know, it's got that kind of production value.
49:57
SPEAKER_02: It's it's so well done.
49:59
SPEAKER_02: It's a 100% a Hollywood movie.
50:01
SPEAKER_02: Like the Hillsword and Red, it needed to be a franchise.
50:04
SPEAKER_02: For whatever reason, and I I would be interested to see Brian Cox is in it as the old man he has.
50:09
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I would be interested to see uh uh interview or a documentary or something as to why didn't Trick or Treat get a theatrical lease.
50:21
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, who was the person who decided this isn't good enough for the theater?
50:26
SPEAKER_02: Some scooch in executive, some idiot who doesn't know nothing about or that's who I'll tell you right now.
50:33
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
50:34
SPEAKER_02: I so you know they're doing the anthology uh Crystal Lake.
50:39
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I could see because this whole town from Trigger Treat, the backstory, the kids, and the buff, you could make it a eight-part series out of Trigger Treat with the way with everything in that town.
50:51
SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah.
50:52
SPEAKER_02: And it I think it would draw people, make some money, man.
50:55
SPEAKER_01: Each segment in Trigger Treat could be like its own show.
50:58
SPEAKER_01: A full episode of a title.
51:00
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, like you said, um you could do a whole episode on just a whole one-hour episode on just the werewolf part, yeah, on just the kids on the school bus part.
51:10
SPEAKER_01: Like, and then yeah, at the end of the series, you could do an episode that connects it all together and really expand on it and make what probably was like an hour and a half, hour and forty-five minutes into eight, nine, ten hours of content.
51:24
SPEAKER_02: I don't this just popped into my head and I wanted to say it.
51:26
SPEAKER_02: Uh, you said something early about how these smaller movies that are right to DVD, TV, streaming give smaller people big platform to get out there.
51:37
SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah.
51:37
SPEAKER_02: So I don't know why I didn't mention this.
51:40
SPEAKER_02: The House of the Devil.
51:42
SPEAKER_02: It was directed by the same chick who directed the Wonder Woman movie.
51:46
SPEAKER_02: She's actually in the movie, she's the one who gets her brains blown out as soon as she comes up to the car.
51:51
SPEAKER_01: Patty Jenkins?
51:52
SPEAKER_02: Yes.
51:52
SPEAKER_02: Okay.
51:52
SPEAKER_02: She directed that.
51:53
SPEAKER_01: Okay.
51:54
SPEAKER_02: That was her first.
51:56
SPEAKER_02: Uh okay.
51:57
SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
51:58
SPEAKER_02: She's in that movie, dude.
51:59
SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
52:00
SPEAKER_02: She gets her out of the wall, and she goes up to the car and he shoots her right in the head, and you're like, oh yeah.
52:06
SPEAKER_01: Interesting.
52:07
SPEAKER_01: I didn't know that was her first.
52:08
SPEAKER_01: Yep.
52:08
SPEAKER_01: I knew that she directed that.
52:09
SPEAKER_01: I didn't know that was her first directing gig, though.
52:12
SPEAKER_01: But yeah, I mean, that's that's the wonderful thing about um straight to video, and then this is how we'll end the episode is you know, it gives these franchises a chance to live on and make more parts because there are fans out there who love them some Leprechaun or love them some Pump Master.
52:34
SPEAKER_02: Uh, I think you're the only one.
52:35
SPEAKER_01: And they want to see more of it, even though you know it's not going to be like the populace doesn't agree, bad.
52:41
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
52:43
SPEAKER_01: But it gives opportunities to, you know, like we said, uh, maybe people who are musicians or athletes who are trying to break into acting, gives opportunities to young actors who have never acted before who go on to bigger and better things.
52:59
SPEAKER_01: And the directors, directors who go on to bigger and better things.
53:02
SPEAKER_01: These these are great opportunities for all these people to get their foot in the door.
53:09
SPEAKER_01: And um I would I would bet if we really dug in and did some research, I bet we would be shocked by all the directors and actors.
53:22
SPEAKER_02: Jennifer Aniston, leprechaun, yeah.
53:24
SPEAKER_02: Steven Spielberg, I believe, one of his first movies, if I'm not wrong, was called Duel.
53:30
SPEAKER_02: And it's, you know, that's a whore, I guess you or maybe not horror, but it's very thrilleristic.
53:37
SPEAKER_01: It's intense.
53:38
SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
53:38
SPEAKER_02: And then he does draws, which is horror.
53:41
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
53:41
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
53:42
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
53:43
SPEAKER_01: I th I bet you we would be surprised at that by how many people got their start in a direct-to-video kind of a situation.
53:52
SPEAKER_01: You know, it just gives great opportunity.
53:55
SPEAKER_01: And it ensures that these movies are gonna keep getting made.
54:02
SPEAKER_01: We're never gonna run out of stuff to talk about on this podcast.
54:05
SPEAKER_01: And never gonna um it's gonna ensure that people keep getting these breaks that they need to, you know, get their foot in the door and make some noise.
54:18
SPEAKER_01: And then that sets them up for bigger and better things, you know.
54:22
SPEAKER_01: It's it's a it's a neat platform, and it definitely shouldn't be undervalued, it shouldn't be diminished.
54:30
SPEAKER_02: Never think lower of these.
54:32
SPEAKER_01: No, no, don't never overlook, never overlook them, because you will be happy when you find those ones that really just sit with you.
54:43
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and some small things in life like that where you a movie you didn't think would be worth anything, and you're like, This is one of my favorite movies, yeah.
54:52
SPEAKER_01: Now it's one of my rewatches or whatever, yeah, for sure.
54:56
SPEAKER_02: So next week, what are we talking about next week?
54:58
SPEAKER_01: We're gonna talk about the summer horror blockbuster.
55:02
SPEAKER_02: Give me it for instance.
55:04
SPEAKER_01: Well, last I think I I'm stealing this idea from you because I think it was uh of course uh you talked about New Blood coming out, like that was a May release.
55:16
SPEAKER_02: 88, yeah.
55:17
SPEAKER_01: In 88, yeah.
55:18
SPEAKER_01: So just in the last episode or two, 88 movie, um, you talked about today was the release day of New Blood.
55:24
SPEAKER_01: So that got me thinking, um, you know, there's basically two times a year when the big horror movies come out, and obviously Halloween and summer is when the big horror movies really want to try to get that slot at the theater as close as close to Halloween as possible.
55:44
SPEAKER_01: But growing up in the 80s and 90s, um there was always big horror movies out for the summer.
55:51
SPEAKER_01: May, June, July was big, you know.
55:53
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, big time, big time.
55:55
SPEAKER_01: So that's what we're gonna take a look at next week is the history of all the big time blockbuster horror movies that came out in the summer.
56:06
SPEAKER_01: Okay.
56:06
SPEAKER_01: Had a big summer release.
56:08
SPEAKER_02: It's funny because usually the ones they're afraid they'll put out in December, January, and February.
56:13
SPEAKER_02: Scream, for instance, yeah, came out in December because they didn't think it was gonna do anything.
56:17
SPEAKER_01: They bury it.
56:18
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
56:18
SPEAKER_01: But it's funny because I think that's changing a little bit now with movies like Terrifier.
56:24
SPEAKER_01: They're they're aiming for these like Christmas releases now.
56:30
SPEAKER_02: Well, part three, definitely, because that it takes place.
56:33
SPEAKER_02: So I think, yeah.
56:34
SPEAKER_01: Right.
56:34
SPEAKER_01: But I'm saying, like, now it's they're it's not because they're getting buried, they're kind of banking on it because it is.
56:41
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's times change, right?
56:43
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, for sure.
56:44
SPEAKER_01: But yeah, that's so that's what we're gonna talk about next week.
56:46
SPEAKER_01: Kind of the opposite of straight to Via.
56:48
SPEAKER_01: We're gonna talk about the big boys, big blockbusters that came out in the summertime.
