• 0:06
[instrumental music] Hey, everybody. It's Sven here, Fat Bike Radio.
• 0:23
Hey, it's Fox Kryptonite here. [laughs] Your uncle Gomez. And I'm Andy Rooney, or kind of. JK, Sven. [laughs] Andy Rooney.
• 0:39
Oh- Why would anybody ride a bike- And, uh-... with tires that are that fat? And for another thing, why are you out there with your snow bikes? [laughs] Andy Rooney. Hey, Fat Bike Radio is brought to you by Surly Bikes.
• 0:55
Learn more at surlybikes.com. Very good. What's happening on the show this week, JK? Ch- ch- ch- changes. I like to do that. Oh, yeah? To changes. You know- We're making some changes... exactly, Gomez.
• 1:11
Turn, face strange. [laughs] We announce the radio promo contest winner. We'll have a new regional segment, as well as new call-in question segment.
• 1:28
Today we'll reveal the question for next week. Cheers. [laughs] Cheers. We're gonna announce the contest winner for our radio promo contest. We had some big prizes.
• 1:45
And we had, uh, we had, uh, dozens of entries. A dozens. [laughs] Thanks for playing along, folks. Exactly. And our, our big winner is Robert Taylor. [bell ringing] Yeah, Robert. He wins the, uh,
• 2:02
framed... Where is it? Where... I, I'm looking for it. It's behind you. It's right behind me. Yep. [laughs] The framed carbon elastic fat bike. [laughs] Should we have a listen to the winning entry? I think we should.
• 2:14
I'll just plug that in right here. [instrumental music] This is televangelist Jim Baker.
• 2:24
When I'm not praying for the souls of Sven and Gomez, I'm listening to them on the Weekly Dose of Fat, Fat Bike Radio. [tires screeching] And in second place,
• 2:42
Brother Bob Prohaska came through, and he wins the framed Minnesota tires. Nice tires. All right. Let's- Are you gonna ring that bell or sh- [laughs] Are you just toying with us?
• 3:00
[laughs] After the enthusiastic ringing for the first place. Yeah, my arm got tired. Mm-hmm. Uh, well, let's take a listen to, uh, to second place right here.
• 3:11
Hey, Siri, can you tell me where I can find what's happening in the world of fat bikes? You should check out Fat Bike Radio with Sven and Gomez. Uh, yeah. Got any other suggestions? No. I said Fat Bike Radio.
• 3:26
Man up, pansy. Man up and listen to the Weekly Dose of Fat with Sven and Gomez on Fat Bike Radio. And you can see why it's number two.
• 3:36
[laughs] And we must have had a third place that, uh, uh, that we awarded as well. Hey, in third place, some cat that just goes by Dominic and then a series of numbers,
• 3:53
  18. Fantastic set of statement tires. Very good. Congratulations, Dominic.
• 4:00
Yeah, we're gonna be, uh, we're gonna be in touch with y'all and, uh, fill in all the blanks and make sure that these prizes get shipped directly to your door. So thanks to everyone that, uh, entered.
• 4:10
And also thanks to Framed Bikes and the movie Glengarry Glen Ross- [laughs]... for, for, yeah, this segment. I think to take us out of this segment, we'll just go ahead and give a listen to Dominic's third place entry.
• 4:24
There you go. We'll be right back. Hey, you're listening to the show that makes people with skinny tires tremble with fear. It's the Weekly Dose of Fat with Sven and Gomez on Fat Bike Radio.
• 4:41
[upbeat music] Chumba USA builds innovative, technically superior bicycles that are race-ready, ride-driven, and tested to withstand the harshest conditions and tackle the toughest and roughest terrain.
• 4:56
Learn more about Chumba's American-made Ursa, and coming soon, Ursa Major, at chumbausa.com.
• 5:03
[upbeat music] So we're back from that segment, and we're blasting right into our post-hiatus, uh, what do we call it? Metamorphosis. Yeah.
• 5:19
We came in as drunken caterpillars, and we're gonna go out as ethereal butterflies. [laughs] Wow, you've been, like, listening to PM Dawn the past two weeks? [laughs] I don't know.
• 5:36
[laughs] I don't even know what PM Dawn is. [laughs] So- All right...
• 5:42
some of the changes that we're going into here is we're going to have a regional segment, 'cause we, we're, we're in the Midwest and we, we talk about the Midwest a lot.
• 5:52
So this is my thinking, that we need to get people to call into the show and have a couple of beers first. Call us- And talk about what's going on in your fat bike culture out there in Manitoba. Mm-hmm.
• 6:06
Oregon- Fairbanks... wherever... Maine. Yep. Vermont, France, Chile- Yeah... Argentina. All of it. The- Puerto Rico. [laughs] Puerto Rico. East Coast, West Coast- Yeah... South Coast- Anywhere... North Coast.
• 6:23
Every coast, every continent. So we have some people in mind that, you know, if you guys don't step up to the plate, we'll probably bug in some of our friends.
• 6:32
But we would like to meet some new people and hear from some new people. So don't be shy. Send us an email, info@fat-bike.com.
• 6:43
Put, uh, ambassador, radio ambassador or- Can we ban words like Strava in any of the stories or anything like that? Um, yeah. [laughs] I think I, I think we have to lower our standards. [laughs] Okay.
• 6:59
[laughs] All right, so if you're Strava-ing a beach somewhere, you're welcome to call in. Right. But we might make fun of you, but you... We'll make fun of you no matter what, so.
• 7:07
[laughs] We're already have- We're already making fun of you. We already are. Just kidding. I'm, I'm really- We don't make fun of- No, not kidding. Uh, so is that a good way to... info@fat- Sure, yeah....com?
• 7:19
That'll work. Put the hyphen in there, and in the, um, like radio ambassador in the title. Radio ambassador.
• 7:26
Yeah, I think our, kind of our plan here is to get some people we're, we're working with regularly, once every couple weeks or once a month, and- Bounce around the country. Yeah. So we do a show every week.
• 7:36
We talked on, uh, in our meeting the other day. [laughs] Uh, we, uh, talked about maybe doing once a week one segment and then bouncing it around to the four corners of the earth.
• 7:53
Right. [coughs] Yeah. So you might only have- I still, I think that's a good plan... you might only have to call in once a month or once every six weeks. Yeah. Well, we'll kind of work with it on a case by case basis.
• 8:07
And, hey, we'll make it worth your while, you know, stickers, T-shirts. Yep. Long lingering man hugs. Per- Whatever it takes... perhaps. Perhaps. [laughs] Yeah, I'll come camp in your, in your yard. [laughs] And then...
• 8:23
[laughs] On my way somewhere. On my way. Hey, I'm just gonna camp. Don't, don't worry. You'll never even smell me. [laughs] So that's not the only new segment. I know. We have another one. We have another one.
• 8:38
So who's gonna talk about that? [clears throat] What is it again? We're gonna, uh- [laughs]... we're gonna have a weekly, we're gonna have a weekly question. Oh, right, yeah.
• 8:47
Put a post up on, uh, on Mondays and have people call in, and we're, like, we're gonna reveal it this week for next week. Right. 'Cause again, we want to get people to interact with the show- Right on...
• 9:00
'cause they're the stars. It's pretty easy to do. There's a schlock that have microphones and stuff. Yep. It's easy to call in at 818-918-2453. Yeah. Once again, that's 818-918-BIKE. Yeah. So who...
• 9:16
If somebody calls that number, what question should they have in mind for next week? Next week is what is the most you would ever spend on a pair of winter cycling boots? You know? I got a number in my head- Yeah...
• 9:29
already. So yeah, okay. For sure. That's a good one. Like, for me, I would be, like, $299. That's- That's a, it's a lot of money, but it's- It's a lot of money...
• 9:40
you know, you can expect to get something workable at that kind of money- Right... whether it's cycling specific or not, 'cause I don't, uh, ride clips anymore.
• 9:48
It's, I got a wide range of other boots to look at and they- I know... aren't that expensive. And it's... I'd spend a lot of time going- Yeah, if, if I were-... "Oh, can I rationalize the purchase?" [laughs] Oh.
• 10:01
[laughs] Can I... All right. All right, all right, all right, all right, all right, all right. 'Cause what, what is, what is the, like, Summit Counties from Keen, what do they go for?
• 10:08
I think they retail for 199, but you usually find them a little less than that. 160. Yeah, something like that. Sale stuff. Right. Or at, uh, REI or something. Sure. Still rationalizing.
• 10:19
I, I- That's how, but that's how I'm wired. Yeah, I know. But they, you know, the Willfamers are out there at threes- Three and a quarter- Yeah... maybe.
• 10:30
You know, I, I don't, I don't know what they are priced in the shops, but I know it's over $300. So now we're prejudicing everybody by telling them- I know... what we think. [laughs] Oh, well, you know, that's...
• 10:39
But we'll have more discussion next week. Yeah, that's, that's the question of the week. You're gonna call in and say, "No, I would spend 99 like I just did." You know? Yeah. Yep. [laughs] Okay. That's all I do.
• 10:50
So that's the question, what's the most you would ever spend on a pair of winter cycling boots? But you can call in and talk to us really about anything. Yeah.
• 10:56
We're just- Call us and talk to us about how you feel about fat biking. [laughs] Put down some miles tapes. It's- Turn the lights down. [laughs] It's that kind of thing. All right.
• 11:09
Well, we'll- Hopefully we haven't scared everybody away. [laughs] I think we should take a break. All right. Let's have, let's have a break now. We'll be, we'll be back. You're tuned to Fat Bike Radio.
• 11:27
[upbeat rock music] When it comes to fat bikes, Zion Cyclery in Zion, Illinois, has you covered. They stock fatties from Surly, Salsa, 907, Borealis, and Trek, as well as everything from 45 North.
• 11:44
The staff is friendly, the mechanics are top-notch, and they stock the largest selection of fat bikes in the Chicago-Milwaukee area. There's a mountain bike park and some great beach riding in Zion.
• 11:55
So come, make a day of it. Call 847-746-2200 or visit zioncyclery.com. Welcome to this week's Fatty Farm Field Report.
• 12:13
Okay, we're- This is kind of the, this is kind of the news section now.
• 12:16
We're kind of toying around with what we might call this, so [laughs] there may be a few random terms thrown in there over- [laughs] But it's basically gonna be the same thing. This is the news segment of the show.
• 12:27
[laughs] This is what happened. Yeah, what did happen? JK wrote a bunch of them that were just hilarious. [laughs] So, you know, it... We might, we might be back with, with more dazzling ads for this segment. Yep.
• 12:42
For now. For now, we- It's the Fatty Farm Field Report with JK Living and Sven at the Pork Desk. Ming-ding-ding-ding-ding. Yep, we passed the old 20,000 mark at Facebook this past week somehow.
• 12:56
[bell ringing] Thanks, everybody. Thank you. That's a, that's a big number. Yeah. Uh, don't forget to go check out plusbikes.com as well. Oh, yeah. We got that thing going too. Mm-hmm.
• 13:06
Things are, uh, going crazy in, uh, the whole... It's starting to light up again. It was a little slow there for a while, but it's... I'm just saying this 'cause we got a new test bike yesterday.
• 13:18
[laughs] And it just so happens that it's for me, so, you know, I was depressed before, but now I'm kind of happier. Right on.
• 13:26
[laughs] I was, I was so depressed I went camping by myself [laughs] for four days in Michigan. Yeah. And then the- It's- And then the bike showed up and you... Yeah.
• 13:36
I came back, the bike showed up, and I think I'm gonna be off camping for, uh, for at least two weeks. Gonna go through the Front Range and Fruita and then out to Ogden, Utah for SaddleDrive.
• 13:54
SaddleDrive. Gonna be visiting some bike companies along the way if they'll see me, so. Oh, they'll see you. [laughs] See me to the door. If they know what's good for them. But, uh, yeah, Moots.
• 14:08
I'm looking forward to going to see Moots. Out there in Steamboat? In Steamboat. Yeah. It's kind of halfway between the Front Range. I'm going to see Moon Man and- Good guys, for sure...
• 14:19
Steve at Borealis has a new place, so I don't know if they're settled in enough for- He's got some new people too. Yeah. Some people are moving around over there. Right. They're- Gearing up again...
• 14:30
yeah, it's like, uh, the industry's going crazy that way. People moving all over the place. So yeah, today we got in the Advocate Cycles Watchmen. It's actually, uh, Mr. Kruger's, uh, personal bike. Personal rig. Yeah.
• 14:46
So- So it's a large, I would imagine. Yeah. Yeah. So it fits me. Right on. And, uh- And that's a 26x4, right? That's- Right... yeah, and he does a plus bike- A 177 through axle with Maxles and a Bluto.
• 14:59
So I'm gonna take that out west. That's the bike I'm gonna take out west with me. Running a XX1. Nicey nice. So hopefully I have a low enough gear or I'll just be a pedestrian.
• 15:11
[laughs] But I thought that it gets pretty low. I was- Yeah... yeah, so. Yeah. I was thinking about it.
• 15:17
It's just like, well, okay, that's about gear for uphill switchbacks, and so I have to, you know- You can get a, you can get a bigger ring from, uh, OneUp or, you know, OneUp- Or a smaller front ring.
• 15:29
I tell you- Or a smaller front ring too. Yeah, you got options. Yeah. So I don't know.
• 15:34
I don't know what my second bike, what my choice is gonna be for a second bike or whether I want to, you know, move two bikes all the time instead of just whipping one bike off the back rack, 'cause I'm not...
• 15:47
I'm going to tent camp. I'm gonna use my hammock and- No camper being pulled... no camper. Just too much gas and just too much- Yeah... stuff for just one person. Right.
• 15:59
I can hop out of the car, have that hammock up in five minutes, and be sleeping in your backyard before you're- [laughs] Before Jenny Carson's on the TV. Before the wife's- [laughs]... saying, "Hi" and fuck you.
• 16:15
So yeah, we went into a whole thing there where that was just stuff we have in the oncoming... What are, what are you guys doing? What is this Toad thing? Oh, I know this. Toad. This is in the past. Yeah.
• 16:28
This is during the hiatus. Yep, I was- Right before, like, when we took off. Yeah, I missed it this year, but, uh, it's the Tour of America's Dairyland. It, it's a good race series. What are there, a dozen maybe races?
• 16:42
Yeah, it's like 10 days. Yeah, so- Just around the-... road racey types. Yeah. Real professional road race types. Like those, uh, guys doing- Real, real, real-...
• 16:49
the Tour de France upcoming here on, starting on Saturday... yeah. Well, while you were gone, there was quite a big, a lot of news about Tour Divide as well. I followed all of that. Anybody fatbike that or plus bike it?
• 17:03
Um, they all seem to be riding... Well, JP was riding that new Salsa, that that was the bike that they made for that route. Right on. Yep. It was a big carbon kind of adventure drop bar. I don't know.
• 17:20
And, uh, Neil Beltchenko, he was riding a Chumba. Neil Beltchenko from bikepackermagazine.com. How about that guy, huh? Dude, it's his first time doing it, and he was, like, in the beginning the whole way. Wow.
• 17:37
That's impressive. And then some cat that, that I have never heard of, and I don't know what kind of bike he rides or anything, uh, he actually won BJP.
• 17:45
But the three of them were very close and duked it out right to the end. Very cool, uh, thing. And, uh, our b- friend of, uh, lady friend of, of a guy that I met up in Alaska, uh, Nicholas Carmen, his girlfriend Lael
• 18:03
w- won the women's and broke the record. And the record, I guess, has been shattered again. Yeah. Wow. It's amazing. Good conditions on a decent bike with some fit people and that's what you get, a race. Yeah. Yeah, man.
• 18:17
Can you imagine, though, this is race camping, so it's like you just don't ever sleep. The guy that poops the fastest gets out first. I'd just be doomed. [laughs] I need a poop and a nap. [laughs] With a tap on the back.
• 18:34
I like to sleep. I take forever to poop. [laughs] Why rush setting up your t- Just smell... they probably didn't even set up tents. They just had a nap in a ditch. Yep. For what? 32 minutes and then I'm out of here.
• 18:49
Yeah. So yeah, crazy stuff. Fat bikes were well-represented. The out route for Fat Tire Tour Milwaukee- Oh... a couple weeks ago. Mm-hmm. Yeah. It worked out. Yeah, we didn't run into you on that day. Pretty fantastic.
• 19:02
I might have had my looking face on. [laughs] Or I might not have been there. You rolling Jetta? [laughs] It was a good time. It's always a good time. I...
• 19:12
If, if you're ever in the area, that's 400 people riding and I would do it if I were in Milwaukee and I would... might even plan like a long weekend from somewhere else to come and do that.
• 19:22
Events like that and the Riverwest 24 I think are things that I would travel to some other city for. So I think it makes c- good sense for them to come to our city. Yeah.
• 19:31
We might have some guests from Grand Rapids coming over on the, uh, ferry. Cool. So are we in the... Were... Are we in the links? I think so. We didn't mention your birthdays. Oh. No we're not.
• 19:43
And we're not in the links. No, we're not mentioning it now either. Yay. [laughs] Yay. Yeah. Saturday. Saturday's the day. Yes. The 2-R-D-A-Y. Yes. Right. Another year older. Another trip around the old sun. You got her.
• 20:00
I got a c- couple more, hopefully. All right. Well, we got links.
• 20:05
Let's- Just like 10 minutes from now you can, uh, if you're up there in the northern Illinois, southeastern Wisconsin border area, you can jump on and, uh, go for a ride at Beulah Park. And a barbecue. Yeah.
• 20:18
At, uh, Zion, Illinois. I might have to go to that. [laughs] Yeah. Well, now you know about it. Yeah. [laughs] I mean, these people aren't gonna know about it till like an hour before the event.
• 20:28
[laughs] I just bought my granddaughter one of those Easy Rider, Early Rider- [laughs]... fat bike Strider. [laughs] There he goes and we, we just are like... That's the funniest thing. [laughs] We snort, not wheeze.
• 20:43
We sh- like we should call it snort, not wheeze segment. [laughs] Oh, my God. But yeah, one of those Fatbike Strider bikes- Okay... that Q started bringing in from the UK. So I, I...
• 20:59
For some reason I was on some kind of email blast and they... I found out that... And I probably shouldn't have been on it 'cause it was one of those dealer things, but they said, "Hey,
• 21:11
Early Rider Strider bikes are in stock now," and, uh, I called up Chris at Zion Cyclery. Got one? Yeah. Good. For my, for my granddaughter, Juniper. She's just gonna rock that.
• 21:26
I'm gonna teach her to ride like a fat old man. [laughs] Very good. Yeah, she'll learn, she'll learn quickly. What are, what are your Devo fat bike revelations? I have no idea what this is.
• 21:40
[laughs] I write things sometimes, and I swear to God, the devil takes over my fingertips. [laughs] Just kidding. [laughs] That's all just acting. Acting. Thespian.
• 21:53
How about a nine-year-old preparing to do a double century? Dude, I would ha- talk about hating your parents. [laughs] Be like, "Why are you making me do this?"
• 22:03
Yeah, I think it's, it's a, it's a compelling story, and she's using a fat bike, which is what caught my eye. Yeah. More that it's the fat bike is being used for a double century. But you never know. By a nine-year-old.
• 22:17
What, what are you kidding me? That's gonna be awesome if she can- Maybe this nine-year-old... she rode 100, she rode 100-miler last year on a mountain bike. Yeah. So there's more in that story than meets the eye.
• 22:30
[laughs] All right. Or your ears. Or your ears from me. Yeah. We got a copper and a mayor riding fat bikes. Kappa. One over there in the UK and one in Colorado Springs. Yeah, the c- the new...
• 22:43
He's brand new, like not long week or something like that. Yeah. And the previous mayor wouldn't do... m- make these rides while the mayor before him did, so now he's kind of bringing back a thing that- Ah...
• 22:54
a mayor or two ago had been able to- The bike-friendly mayor party- Yeah, and-... is back in power... right, and that gets... It energizes people, I think. Yeah. Get to ride with your local official, so.
• 23:06
And say, "Hey, man." Milwaukee has a good bike-friendly mayor. Yeah, true that. When I had a ticket for, uh, riding in that, uh, whatever you call that, what is the- Underwear ride? [laughs] No. Road? The road?
• 23:22
[laughs] No, it's something- The road?... with Critical Mass, that's what it's called. Oh, okay. I had a ticket once and- [laughs]... people got tackled and the cops just like were crazy out of control.
• 23:33
I got a ticket because I don't think my bike was licensed. That was the t- they wrote me. It was like $36. I just paid it and [laughs] the, uh, the mayor, Mayor Barrett, gave me a refund, man, sent me a check, so.
• 23:48
Bike friendly. And then a couple months after that, Critical Mass worked it out with the cops and you had like Critical Mass with, with police escort, so it was quite the turnaround. [laughs] Yeah.
• 24:02
No, you go out from- From criminal to king. [laughs] Or something like that. What else you got? Anything? Uh, we're, uh- Oh, plus bike links. Yeah. There, there's a couple of bikes in the plus bike test kitchen.
• 24:13
One is a Jamis Dragon Slayer, which would've been perfect for you, but, uh, you were- Out of town. So I went to our New Chester Andy from Vet Camp. Right on, all over in Michigan, yep. Yeah. Yep.
• 24:29
So I brought that over when I went to Michigan, and he's gonna take that bike. He's ridden it for now a couple of weeks in Michigan, and now he's taking it to New York and Maine, doing a little cycle vacation.
• 24:43
Sounds great. I'd- it's a, it's a bike I'd like to check out, for sure. And, uh, we also have Mr. Colin Ford on a Lenz Fatillac, a 29-plus full suspension bike that, uh- Boom... he's, he's riding.
• 24:58
I have, I have nothing to report, but I plan on stopping and seeing him when I go to Colorado. Yeah, try and get some action shots, 'cause I have a feeling he's gonna bomb that thing. Yeah, it, it should.
• 25:10
I love the name, too. I'm just a sucker for Cadillacs, so. Long car, shiny and black. Mm-hmm. All right, well- That's all I did for this weekend... yeah.
• 25:20
Thanks to Surly for sponsoring the radio portion of today's broadcast. Join us next week, and, uh, we'll check in on that question, how much would you ever consider spending on a pair of winter cycling boots?
• 25:34
I guess that's it. Adios, amigos. Bye. Bye-bye. [upbeat music] You've been listening to Fat Bike Radio's Weekly Dose of Fat. Find us on the web at fat-bike.com/radio.
• 25:52
We'll see you next time. [upbeat music]
