- 0:01Speaker 1: I don't know about your experience, but in my experience,
- 0:04Speaker 1: the gravitational pull of religion is generally and the way
- 0:08Speaker 1: it's presented and the way that many of us experienced it,
- 0:11Speaker 1: especially growing up, the gravitational pull of religion is usually
- 0:14Speaker 1: towards some sort of behavioral conformity. You know, there's like,
- 0:17Speaker 1: this is how we do it here. If you're going
- 0:19Speaker 1: to be a part of this church, if you're part
- 0:20Speaker 1: of this religion, you know, this is how we do
- 0:22Speaker 1: it here. In fact, you if you show up new
- 0:26Speaker 1: to an environment that's a religious environment, you kind of
- 0:29Speaker 1: aren't sure what to do. Sometimes, in fact, some of
- 0:31Speaker 1: you are gathered with us and what you would consider
- 0:34Speaker 1: a religious environment, and you're not really sure what to
- 0:36Speaker 1: do either, because there's just stuff you do. You got
- 0:38Speaker 1: to learn the rules, but it goes beyond the rules
- 0:40Speaker 1: of you know, a gathering. There's just stuff you have
- 0:43Speaker 1: to do to be a part of that religion. And
- 0:45Speaker 1: this may be the reason you left religion. It may
- 0:48Speaker 1: be the reason you left Christianity, or you left the
- 0:50Speaker 1: church either you couldn't keep the rules, or you didn't
- 0:54Speaker 1: want to keep the rules, or they just didn't make
- 0:56Speaker 1: any sense to you. In fact, interestingly enough, and maybe
- 0:59Speaker 1: all of us have experiences to some in some capacity,
- 1:02Speaker 1: Once you get outside the bubble of any kind of community,
- 1:06Speaker 1: especially a religious community, once you get outside of it
- 1:09Speaker 1: and look back at it, you're kind of like, that's
- 1:11Speaker 1: just kind of weird. In fact, Sandra and I grew
- 1:13Speaker 1: up very similar in you know, a southern traditional church,
- 1:19Speaker 1: and we love the way that we were brought up
- 1:21Speaker 1: and appreciate it so much, but there was just some
- 1:23Speaker 1: weird things about it. But when you're doing it, when
- 1:25Speaker 1: you're in it, it doesn't seem weird. It's just a
- 1:27Speaker 1: way of life. It's just the kind of the flow
- 1:29Speaker 1: of life. It's the rhythm of life. And along with
- 1:33Speaker 1: the kind of things that are kind of harmless sometimes
- 1:35Speaker 1: a part of those little religious bubbles. Sometimes they're a
- 1:38Speaker 1: bit harmful, and once you get outside of it again,
- 1:40Speaker 1: it's kind of like you look at it and go,
- 1:42Speaker 1: you know what that I don't don't That doesn't even
- 1:44Speaker 1: make any sense. It made sense at the time, but
- 1:46Speaker 1: it doesn't make sense to me now. And this is
- 1:48Speaker 1: true of basically any religious system, whether it's Christian or not.
- 1:52Speaker 1: But somewhere along the way is part of that little
- 1:54Speaker 1: bubble or that little echo of that little microcosm of behavior.
- 1:58Speaker 1: There is there behaviors. There are things that you're supposed
- 2:01Speaker 1: to do in things you're never supposed to do, and
- 2:02Speaker 1: there's generally some sort of condemnation, you know, associated with
- 2:06Speaker 1: those kinds of things. Now, with that as a backdrop,
- 2:10Speaker 1: one of the most perplexing, irreverent, paradigm shifting, mind bending
- 2:17Speaker 1: statements that Jesus made in his earthly ministry addressed this.
- 2:22Speaker 1: And here's here's what he said. And the problem with
- 2:26Speaker 1: us is because we're not dialed into first century judy
- 2:28Speaker 1: and culture. If you read a phrase like this when
- 2:30Speaker 1: you're reading through the Bible, you just read right by it.
- 2:32Speaker 1: But I'm telling you, when Jesus said this, I would
- 2:35Speaker 1: bet just about anything, there was a gasp in the crowd.
- 2:37Speaker 1: In fact, when you read this what he's the statement
- 2:40Speaker 1: in context, it was part of the reason that the
- 2:42Speaker 1: religious leaders turned on him so quickly. So one day
- 2:45Speaker 1: he's teaching and he makes this statement, the Sabbath was
- 2:50Speaker 1: made for man, not man for the Sabbath. Exactly. It's like,
- 2:56Speaker 1: what who cares? Right? Just keep going, you know, to
- 2:59Speaker 1: give me something I can of my life. This was
- 3:02Speaker 1: a paradigm shift of epic proportion. And the reason it
- 3:06Speaker 1: was is because first century Judaism and modern Judaism in
- 3:10Speaker 1: some capacity, the Sabbath is everything. It's one of the hallmarks.
- 3:13Speaker 1: It's one of the things that differentiates Jewish people from
- 3:16Speaker 1: the rest of culture how they keep Sabbath, and Sabbath
- 3:19Speaker 1: was to be kept in such a way that even
- 3:20Speaker 1: if you were a visitor in someone's home, even if
- 3:23Speaker 1: you were a foreigner living in ancient Israel, especially you know,
- 3:28Speaker 1: pre first century, you had to keep Sabbath because that's
- 3:31Speaker 1: just what everybody did. It was like one of the
- 3:33Speaker 1: top ten, right, And the bottom line is that people
- 3:37Speaker 1: are more important than the Sabbath. But the way it
- 3:41Speaker 1: had been presented, in the way it been lived at
- 3:43Speaker 1: is no. No, no. The Sabbath is everything because the Sabbath
- 3:46Speaker 1: is somehow connected to the holiness of God. So consequently,
- 3:49Speaker 1: you don't violate the Sabbath. And Jesus comes along and says, no,
- 3:52Speaker 1: you don't understand, my father, the Sabbath was made for you.
- 3:57Speaker 1: You weren't made for the Sabbath. And as it turns out,
- 3:59Speaker 1: what was true of the Sabbath was true of the
- 4:01Speaker 1: entire law. But the religious folks in that culture, and unfortunately,
- 4:05Speaker 1: religious folks in modern culture get this turned around. So
- 4:09Speaker 1: let me say it a different way, because I can
- 4:10Speaker 1: tell they're still kind of like, I'm not even sure
- 4:12Speaker 1: what you're talking about. So let me put it in
- 4:15Speaker 1: modern terminology. Nobody has children, so there will be someone
- 4:21Speaker 1: to play.
- 4:21Speaker 2: With the toys.
- 4:25Speaker 1: Let me say that again, nobody has couples. Aren't like,
- 4:28Speaker 1: you know, we've got all these toys. We should have
- 4:30Speaker 1: some children. There's nobody playing with these toys. We need
- 4:32Speaker 1: to get ourselves some kids so the toys won't be bored. Right, No,
- 4:36Speaker 1: toys are for the benefit of the children, not the
- 4:39Speaker 1: other way around. So back to Jesus point, let me
- 4:42Speaker 1: put it a different way. This is huge. In fact,
- 4:44Speaker 1: this may be hard for you to believe that God
- 4:48Speaker 1: did not create us so that there would be someone
- 4:50Speaker 1: to keep his rules, that his commands are for people,
- 4:55Speaker 1: because God is for people, and specifically God is for you. Now, Gail,
- 5:01Speaker 1: let me put it a different way that God. This
- 5:05Speaker 1: is what Jesus is about to teach is I'm just
- 5:06Speaker 1: kind of giving your heads up in case you leave earlier,
- 5:09Speaker 1: you lose power. God loves you more than God loves
- 5:14Speaker 1: his commandments. And when you get this reversed, people get hurt.
- 5:22Speaker 1: When you get this reversed, when somehow the be all
- 5:26Speaker 1: end all is the rule, not the people, people get hurt.
- 5:30Speaker 1: And religious leaders have leveraged this backwards for generations. And
- 5:34Speaker 1: we're about to discover Jesus dives into this dialogue, into
- 5:37Speaker 1: this conversation and into this tension, and he stirs things up,
- 5:42Speaker 1: and eventually he'd be arrested and crucified because he just
- 5:46Speaker 1: wouldn't play along with the way that people had twisted
- 5:49Speaker 1: his father's words. In fact, as we're about to discover,
- 5:52Speaker 1: when religious leaders, and I'm part of the problem, I
- 5:55Speaker 1: certainly can be when religious leaders use the law of
- 5:59Speaker 1: God to manipulate people made in the image of God,
- 6:02Speaker 1: Jesus was quick to remind them that they were on
- 6:05Speaker 1: the wrong side of God. And this may be the reason.
- 6:12Speaker 1: This may go to the heart of your struggle with
- 6:15Speaker 1: organized religion, or specifically Christianity. And I'm hoping today in
- 6:20Speaker 1: the next few minutes, that Jesus' words would penetrate your
- 6:24Speaker 1: heart and penetrate your religious paradigm so that you might
- 6:29Speaker 1: understand the love of your heavenly fathers, specifically, in Jesus' words,
- 6:33Speaker 1: understand this kingdom, this worldview, this way of life that he.
- 6:39Speaker 2: Came to introduce.
- 6:40Speaker 1: So today we're in part three of a story that
- 6:43Speaker 1: should have died in Nero's Rome, but fortunately it didn't.
- 6:46Speaker 1: It is the story of Jesus of Nazareth as told
- 6:49Speaker 1: by his most famous apostle, Simon Peter Are we just
- 6:52Speaker 1: know him as Peter, and it's dictated to and edited
- 6:56Speaker 1: by a gentleman named John Mark. And John Mark traveled
- 7:00Speaker 1: with the apostle Peter and heard him tell the stories
- 7:02Speaker 1: of his life with Jesus for well. Peter told the
- 7:05Speaker 1: stories for over thirty years. Toward the end of that
- 7:07Speaker 1: traveling he was joined by John Mark, who listened and
- 7:10Speaker 1: hopefully perhaps documented some of these stories. And now Peter
- 7:14Speaker 1: is in his fifties, he's in Rome, he's imprisoned, and
- 7:18Speaker 1: he's not going to leave the city alive, but he
- 7:20Speaker 1: doesn't know it at the time, and so Mark, who's
- 7:22Speaker 1: traveling with him, who's very literate, coaxes the story out
- 7:26Speaker 1: of him one more time, and it comes to us
- 7:29Speaker 1: as the Gospel of Mark. Eventually, the Gospel of Mark
- 7:33Speaker 1: it's not called the Gospel of Mark. Eventually, this first
- 7:35Speaker 1: century document is collected with other accounts of the life
- 7:38Speaker 1: of Jesus, the letters of the apostle Paul. It's collected
- 7:40Speaker 1: and it's given a name in the fourth century, and
- 7:43Speaker 1: the name is called the Bible. But today I don't
- 7:46Speaker 1: want you to hear me reading the Bible, because Mark
- 7:49Speaker 1: wasn't writing the Bible. Mark was documenting Peter's experience with Jesus.
- 7:56Speaker 1: And according to Peter, as he dictates it and downloads
- 7:59Speaker 1: it to Mark, he said, right out of the gates,
- 8:01Speaker 1: Jesus had a very simple message. Peter would say, we
- 8:04Speaker 1: didn't understand it at the time. In fact, stay with
- 8:07Speaker 1: me on this journey so you'll understand it in the end.
- 8:09Speaker 1: But Jesus' message was very simple. He would say everywhere
- 8:12Speaker 1: he went, every time he preached, every time he taught,
- 8:14Speaker 1: the time has come, the Kingdom of God has come near,
- 8:19Speaker 1: which means you're never far. The time has come, the
- 8:24Speaker 1: weight is over. Everything was building up to this moment.
- 8:26Speaker 1: The time has come, the Kingdom of God has come near.
- 8:30Speaker 1: This is what Jesus preached. And then he would say,
- 8:32Speaker 1: here's what I want you to do. In response, I
- 8:33Speaker 1: want you to repent and believe this good news. If
- 8:39Speaker 1: the religion you were brought up on wasn't good news,
- 8:42Speaker 1: it might not have been the original version. It may
- 8:44Speaker 1: not have been Peter's version. And so Peter says, here's
- 8:47Speaker 1: what Jesus told us. Everywhere he went. He wanted people
- 8:50Speaker 1: to turn and to face and embrace this new way
- 8:55Speaker 1: of living, this new way of relating, this new way
- 8:58Speaker 1: of understanding God the Father, and this new kind of
- 9:02Speaker 1: love that.
- 9:02Speaker 2: He was introducing to the world.
- 9:05Speaker 1: So we're in part three, but previously on you're not far.
- 9:10Speaker 1: Here's where we left off. Jesus. Did you get that
- 9:13Speaker 1: Jesus is up in Capernaum. He's traveling around these little
- 9:16Speaker 1: fishing villages. Capernam's kind of the big city. Up here
- 9:19Speaker 1: in the north is the Sea of Galilee, Dead Sea, Jerusalem, Galilee,
- 9:23Speaker 1: Mediterranean Sea. He's up here and he's got so far,
- 9:26Speaker 1: he's got four followers, and Matthew, Martin lu John, He's
- 9:28Speaker 1: got Peter, Andrew, James and John. Peter, Andrew, James and John.
- 9:31Speaker 1: They come into Capernaum and they see somebody that Peter knows.
- 9:34Speaker 1: We know Peter knows him because he tells Mark what
- 9:36Speaker 1: the guy's father's name is. He sees Levi, and Levi's
- 9:39Speaker 1: a tax collector. This is where we left off last time,
- 9:42Speaker 1: and Jesus stares at Levi and Peter's like, yeah, I know, right.
- 9:45Speaker 1: A trader to our city, a trader to his family.
- 9:48Speaker 1: Everybody hates this guy. Jesus walks up to him, and
- 9:50Speaker 1: Peter's like, oh, I don't want to miss this, and
- 9:52Speaker 1: Jesus leans in and says to Levi, follow me. And Peter, Andrew,
- 9:57Speaker 1: James and John are like, I'm not sure if he
- 9:59Speaker 1: follows you, if we're gonna follow you, okay, because he's
- 10:01Speaker 1: an embarrassment to the family and everybody knows what he's
- 10:04Speaker 1: up to because he's out here doing it in public
- 10:06Speaker 1: all the time. So they have a decision to make.
- 10:09Speaker 1: And besides, Jesus, do you have no standards? Are there
- 10:14Speaker 1: no restrictions as to who you would invite to follow you?
- 10:20Speaker 1: And the patriots, the Jewish patriots, and the Jewish religious
- 10:23Speaker 1: people are offended by this. So Peter, Andrew, James, and
- 10:26Speaker 1: John have a decision to make. But they've seen too much,
- 10:28Speaker 1: They've heard too much, and they decide to follow Jesus anyway,
- 10:30Speaker 1: So so Levi we know him as Matthew. Levi stands
- 10:34Speaker 1: up and Jesus has followed me. And I don't know
- 10:36Speaker 1: how this conversation went because Peter doesn't tell us, but
- 10:38Speaker 1: Levi's like, okay, I'll follow you. Where are we going?
- 10:40Speaker 1: And Jesus smiles and says, well, I thought we would
- 10:43Speaker 1: just go to your house. Peter, Andrew, James and John
- 10:47Speaker 1: are like, this is just getting worse by the moment.
- 10:51Speaker 1: So the text tells us when Jesus was having dinner
- 10:55Speaker 1: at Levi's house. Now, this is wrong on so many
- 10:57Speaker 1: levels because dinner at someone's home now, but especially back then,
- 11:01Speaker 1: was intimate. It was symbolic. Everybody knew who was at
- 11:05Speaker 1: everybody's house because everybody lived close together. These villages, these
- 11:08Speaker 1: towns are small, everybody knew. It implies acceptance. And then
- 11:12Speaker 1: it gets even worse because Peter says it wasn't just
- 11:15Speaker 1: us five, And you know with Levi he was having
- 11:17Speaker 1: dinner at Levi's house, many tax collectors and sinners were
- 11:22Speaker 1: eating with him and his disciples. Fur there were many
- 11:25Speaker 1: who followed him. So essentially, either Jesus or Levi we
- 11:28Speaker 1: don't know who either Jesus or Levi invites the whole
- 11:32Speaker 1: office home. Hey, you guys, put down your pens and parchments.
- 11:35Speaker 1: We're going to close, you know, the tax collecting office
- 11:37Speaker 1: for today, and we're all going to my house and
- 11:40Speaker 1: bring your family and bring your friends. Well. Jesus by
- 11:44Speaker 1: this time is being shadowed by the Pharisees, even up
- 11:47Speaker 1: in the northern part of the country, because this guy
- 11:51Speaker 1: is just what he's teaching is so disruptive. I mean,
- 11:53Speaker 1: a new kind of kingdom. The Kingdom of God is near.
- 11:55Speaker 1: The Kingdom of God is near, The Kingdom of God
- 11:57Speaker 1: is near. That's so messianic. So they're shadowing him, and
- 12:00Speaker 1: they follow Levi and Jesus little posse all the way
- 12:03Speaker 1: to Levi's house, but they don't dare step across the
- 12:05Speaker 1: threshold because that would make them ceremonially unclean. And so
- 12:09Speaker 1: here's what happened. When the teachers of the Law who
- 12:11Speaker 1: were Pharisees, saw him eating with sinners talking about Jesus
- 12:16Speaker 1: and tax collectors, they ask his disciples, because they're standing
- 12:19Speaker 1: out on the street. They're like, Simon, you know, Andrew,
- 12:22Speaker 1: somebody come out here. Why why does he eat with
- 12:26Speaker 1: tax collectors and sinners implication, why doesn't he eat with us?
- 12:30Speaker 1: We can't even get coffee with him, We can't get
- 12:33Speaker 1: any of his undivided attention. And here he is eating
- 12:36Speaker 1: with the worst of the worst. Besides, he's a rabbi.
- 12:40Speaker 1: He's supposed to speak on behalf of God. He should
- 12:42Speaker 1: know better. And when Jesus hears about this conversation, he
- 12:45Speaker 1: doesn't apologize. He doubles down and he says to Peter, Andrew,
- 12:49Speaker 1: James or John, he says, go back out there and
- 12:51Speaker 1: tell him this. He said. On hearing this, Jesus said,
- 12:55Speaker 1: let him make sure hear. They know it is not
- 12:58Speaker 1: the healthy. And I think he says that inside of
- 13:00Speaker 1: Levi's home it is not the healthy who need a doctor,
- 13:04Speaker 1: but the sick, to which Levi's like all of his friends,
- 13:10Speaker 1: all of his guests are like, ooh, you're calling us sick.
- 13:16Speaker 1: No offense, Levi, but you and your friends. I think
- 13:19Speaker 1: Jesus was so gregaris. He just smiles and chuckles. He says,
- 13:22Speaker 1: you're all sick, and they kind of looked at each
- 13:25Speaker 1: other and suddenly they realize who they are and what
- 13:27Speaker 1: they've been up to, and somehow it wasn't offensive somehow
- 13:33Speaker 1: Because of how the story enrolls, Levi is ready to
- 13:36Speaker 1: acknowledge his sickness. He's ready to acknowledge his sinfulness. He's
- 13:42Speaker 1: ready to acknowledge what he's been up to. And I
- 13:45Speaker 1: gotta pause his story, and we got to think about
- 13:47Speaker 1: this for a minute. Imagine, okay, Imagine you know Levi,
- 13:51Speaker 1: who no one's ever going to hear about again once
- 13:53Speaker 1: he passes away, Levi who's an embarrassment to his nation
- 13:55Speaker 1: and his family, Levi who is a nobody, is sitting
- 13:59Speaker 1: in his home up here in Capernaum, and he's considering
- 14:02Speaker 1: whether or not he's going to follow Jesus with his life,
- 14:05Speaker 1: and think for a moment about what hung in the
- 14:08Speaker 1: balance of that one decision. Think about what hung in
- 14:14Speaker 1: the balance of his decision to open up his heart
- 14:17Speaker 1: and his life and his mind and acknowledge, Yeah, there's
- 14:22Speaker 1: something wrong with me. I need help. I'm to use
- 14:26Speaker 1: Jesus term, not mine. I'm a sinner.
- 14:29Speaker 2: Who's in need of forgiveness.
- 14:32Speaker 1: So let me just ask you that we're going to
- 14:33Speaker 1: continue with this story, do you know what hangs in
- 14:38Speaker 1: the balance of your decision to admit you need help?
- 14:43Speaker 1: And the answer is no, you don't. And there's something
- 14:48Speaker 1: on the inside of you. Your cousin you know, has emails,
- 14:51Speaker 1: your your husband or your wife, and your kids say daddy,
- 14:54Speaker 1: you know, mommy, and and there's there's just people who
- 14:57Speaker 1: love you and you've kind of shut them all out.
- 14:59Speaker 1: And it may be a something to do with Christianity,
- 15:02Speaker 1: it may be something to do with your drinking. It
- 15:04Speaker 1: may be something to do with some other habit.
- 15:06Speaker 2: You need help.
- 15:08Speaker 1: You're like Levi and you've been given an opportunity, You've
- 15:12Speaker 1: been given an invitation, You've been nudged and do do
- 15:16Speaker 1: you know what hangs in the balance of your decision
- 15:22Speaker 1: to acknowledge your need and to say yes. I'll give
- 15:24Speaker 1: you just a glimpse a world, a freedom, a forgiveness,
- 15:31Speaker 1: a peace, and a different level of relationship that perhaps
- 15:35Speaker 1: you know nothing about, and you'll never know until you
- 15:39Speaker 1: step up and are willing to go. And I just
- 15:42Speaker 1: want you to know, every single day of your life
- 15:45Speaker 1: there is an open invitation from your Savior to follow
- 15:48Speaker 1: him into that kind of freedom, into that kind of
- 15:50Speaker 1: new life. And you never know what you miss, You
- 15:54Speaker 1: never know what you miss until you say yes.
- 15:56Speaker 2: Back to the story.
- 15:57Speaker 1: So on hearing this, Jesus said to that reviewing real quick.
- 16:00Speaker 1: On hearing that, Jesus said to them, it is not
- 16:02Speaker 1: the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. And
- 16:04Speaker 1: then he says this, I have not come and this
- 16:06Speaker 1: was kind of offensive to Peter, Andrew, James and John.
- 16:09Speaker 1: I've not come to call that is collet, oh, the
- 16:11Speaker 1: little Greek term. I've not come to invite. I've not
- 16:14Speaker 1: come to summon. I've not come to call or to
- 16:17Speaker 1: reach out to the righteous. I've only come to call
- 16:20Speaker 1: the sinners. And then Peter's like, he call me, call
- 16:26Speaker 1: my brother, and James and John and suddenly this this
- 16:29Speaker 1: group that was, you know, so different from each other.
- 16:31Speaker 1: You know, the righteous were hard working, you know, Peter, Andrew,
- 16:34Speaker 1: James and John and LEVI. Suddenly Jesus says, no, no, no,
- 16:37Speaker 1: everybody I call is a sinner. I've not come to
- 16:41Speaker 1: call righteous people. What Jesus didn't say that he could
- 16:44Speaker 1: have said, is I've never even met a righteous person.
- 16:48Speaker 1: I've come to call everybody to this new way. Now
- 16:52Speaker 1: here's what's really interesting about this that again we completely
- 16:55Speaker 1: miss in ancient times. Ancient times, ancient religions didn't even
- 16:59Speaker 1: call They weren't even religions really, but it's our term
- 17:02Speaker 1: ancient religions, pagan religions. They didn't they didn't evangelize, they
- 17:06Speaker 1: didn't proselytize, they didn't try to get people to convert
- 17:08Speaker 1: from their version of paganism to a new version of paganism.
- 17:11Speaker 1: And the Jews didn't go out and try to convert
- 17:13Speaker 1: Pagans to become Jews. This was this just wasn't the
- 17:16Speaker 1: way it worked in ancient times. The gods were like apps.
- 17:21Speaker 1: They really were like apps. You want your crops to grow,
- 17:23Speaker 1: you want your babies to grow, you want your house
- 17:25Speaker 1: not to fall down on you. You want to be
- 17:27Speaker 1: victorious in war, Oh, no problem, there's a god for that.
- 17:31Speaker 1: This is how they thought all over the world, all
- 17:33Speaker 1: over the ancient world. You didn't ask people to abandon
- 17:36Speaker 1: their gods in order to embrace your god. You just
- 17:40Speaker 1: they just would add your god to their god. It
- 17:42Speaker 1: was just another burger on the grill. I got these
- 17:43Speaker 1: six household gods, and let me tell you, your god
- 17:46Speaker 1: does what that's great. I'm just gonna add your god,
- 17:48Speaker 1: just gonna put another little statue up on the mandle.
- 17:50Speaker 1: So nobody converted from one religion to another, and nobody
- 17:53Speaker 1: converted from one version of paganism to another. They just
- 17:57Speaker 1: changed the names of the gods, or they just added
- 17:59Speaker 1: God God. And Jesus comes along. This is brand new
- 18:03Speaker 1: in history. Jesus comes along and says, I'm inviting you
- 18:06Speaker 1: to leave something. I'm inviting you to abandon something, and
- 18:12Speaker 1: I'm inviting you to embrace something brand new. And the
- 18:17Speaker 1: reason Jesus invited Levi in, and the reason he invited
- 18:22Speaker 1: Peter Andrew and James and John in, and the reason
- 18:24Speaker 1: that invitation is extended to you is because.
- 18:27Speaker 2: The time has come.
- 18:30Speaker 1: The weight is over all the other pagan religions, all
- 18:34Speaker 1: the other religions of the world, all the other cults
- 18:37Speaker 1: of the world, all the even Judaism. It all pointed
- 18:40Speaker 1: to a time when God was going to reveal himself
- 18:43Speaker 1: in such a way that the entire world would be
- 18:45Speaker 1: invited to a brand new kind of kingdom, a kingdom
- 18:49Speaker 1: of the heart, a kingdom of conscience. The Kingdom of
- 18:52Speaker 1: God has come near, which means you are never far.
- 18:55Speaker 1: You are one turn away, you are one decision away,
- 18:59Speaker 1: you are one shift in mindset away. So repent that
- 19:02Speaker 1: is face it and embrace this brand new news. And
- 19:06Speaker 1: it was Jesus' pursuit of sinners. And it was jesus
- 19:09Speaker 1: pursuit of the unrighteous that illustrated the revolutionary nature of
- 19:13Speaker 1: the Kingdom of God. You didn't have to be born
- 19:15Speaker 1: in a certain part of the world, you didn't have
- 19:17Speaker 1: to understand certain customs, you didn't have to speak a
- 19:20Speaker 1: specific language, you didn't have to have a specific heritage.
- 19:23Speaker 1: Everyone is invited, and he went out of his way
- 19:26Speaker 1: to invite people in. He went out to invite people.
- 19:31Speaker 1: And now to ensure that readers understood that the contrast,
- 19:34Speaker 1: Peter then moves from this little incident we just talked
- 19:37Speaker 1: about with Levi's house to one of Jesus' favorite metaphors.
- 19:40Speaker 1: Here's what he said. This is he's quoting Jesus. And
- 19:42Speaker 1: Jesus said this more than once. He said, I want
- 19:44Speaker 1: to make sure you understand the newness and the uniqueness
- 19:47Speaker 1: of my message. I've not come to tweak something. I've
- 19:50Speaker 1: come to replace everything that's in place. For example, no
- 19:54Speaker 1: one so is a patch of unshrunk cloth on an
- 19:56Speaker 1: old garment. Now, Jesus said this, everybody in Eyetiens like right,
- 20:01Speaker 1: everybody knows better than to do that. And by the way,
- 20:03Speaker 1: you see, people never threw clothes away. Back in ancient times,
- 20:05Speaker 1: clothes were very expensive, so if something ripped or tore,
- 20:07Speaker 1: you didn't throw it away and replace it. You didn't
- 20:09Speaker 1: give it to somebody else. You patched it. And he says,
- 20:12Speaker 1: you know that. You never You never take a piece
- 20:15Speaker 1: of unshrunk cloth and use it as a patch on
- 20:17Speaker 1: old material. Why otherwise, he says, then everybody knew this.
- 20:20Speaker 1: The new piece, the unshrunk piece, will pull away from
- 20:23Speaker 1: the old, making the tear even worse. And they're all like,
- 20:28Speaker 1: we pretty much known that, since we can remember knowing anything.
- 20:31Speaker 1: He says, let me tell you something else you know too,
- 20:33Speaker 1: And no one in the same way pours new wine
- 20:36Speaker 1: into old wine skins. The old wine skins were stretched,
- 20:40Speaker 1: they were old, they were brittle, and he says otherwise,
- 20:42Speaker 1: He tells them again, something they all knew. Otherwise, the
- 20:45Speaker 1: wine will burst the skins, the old skins, and both
- 20:48Speaker 1: the wine and the wine skin will be ruined. And
- 20:51Speaker 1: they're like, yep, we already knew that too.
- 20:54Speaker 2: What is your point? This is so powerful?
- 20:58Speaker 1: His point was that this new teaching, this unique teaching,
- 21:03Speaker 1: this brand new, unique worldview was like the new wine.
- 21:07Speaker 1: The message of Jesus was the new cloth and the
- 21:10Speaker 1: new wine, and the mental image of torn cloth and
- 21:15Speaker 1: burst wine skins punctuated the impossibility. They punctuated the impossibility
- 21:22Speaker 1: of trying to blend Jesus' new message with a current
- 21:26Speaker 1: cultural system, in their case, first century Judaism. He said,
- 21:30Speaker 1: I have not come to blend anything. You cannot add
- 21:33Speaker 1: what I'm teaching onto what you already have, and you
- 21:36Speaker 1: cannot pour what I'm teaching into the container you've already developed.
- 21:39Speaker 1: It is all new. It punctuated the futility of attempting
- 21:43Speaker 1: to blend Jesus' worldview and his values and what he
- 21:46Speaker 1: was teaching with the system of Rome, with the kingdoms
- 21:49Speaker 1: of Rome, with the kingdoms of this world. He said,
- 21:51Speaker 1: I'm introducing something completely new. You can't take what I'm
- 21:55Speaker 1: teaching and put it in your old context, because with
- 21:59Speaker 1: my new teaching, I'm creating a brand new movement, a
- 22:03Speaker 1: brand new eccleca, a brand new assembly that eventually we
- 22:06Speaker 1: would come to know as the Church. The two are
- 22:09Speaker 1: completely incompatible. He had come to fulfill and retire the
- 22:15Speaker 1: entire law to replace it with something better. He said, no,
- 22:19Speaker 1: you don't pour new wine into old wine skins. You
- 22:22Speaker 1: pour new wine into new wineskins. So if the teaching
- 22:26Speaker 1: and the message in the worldview of Jesus was new wine,
- 22:31Speaker 1: the new wine skin again would be his eccleca. He
- 22:35Speaker 1: would talk about it in terms of the Kingdom of God,
- 22:38Speaker 1: but eventually he would announce to his disciples, I'm starting
- 22:41Speaker 1: something brand new on planet Earth that you're going to
- 22:43Speaker 1: be able to see, and nothing's going to be able
- 22:44Speaker 1: to stop it. And you know what, if you're part
- 22:46Speaker 1: of a church, it's you, it's us. We are the container,
- 22:52Speaker 1: we are the context, we are the framework for the
- 22:54Speaker 1: brand new teaching.
- 22:57Speaker 2: Of Jesus.
- 22:58Speaker 1: But then before we can even start to digest all
- 23:01Speaker 1: of that, Peter moves us right along because he's a storyteller,
- 23:03Speaker 1: a story after a story after story, and he plunges
- 23:05Speaker 1: Us into yet another Sabbath controversy again to underscore this
- 23:10Speaker 1: very same point, the incoatibility of jesus teaching with the
- 23:13Speaker 1: current models, he said, Jesus went into a synagogue again.
- 23:17Speaker 1: We think he's still up here in the area of Capernaum,
- 23:19Speaker 1: and Capernaum may have been large enough to have more
- 23:21Speaker 1: than one synagogue. Jesus went into the synagogue and a
- 23:24Speaker 1: man was there with a shriveled hand. And shrivelled hand
- 23:27Speaker 1: meant he has had some sort of hand atrophy, which
- 23:29Speaker 1: meant probably he'd broken his hand, or he'd broken bones
- 23:33Speaker 1: in his hand, or he'd broken fingers and they had
- 23:35Speaker 1: either been improperly set or maybe not set at all,
- 23:39Speaker 1: and consequently his hand had just begun to shrivel. He
- 23:41Speaker 1: probably kept it in a sleeve. It was visible, it
- 23:44Speaker 1: was noticeable, and.
- 23:45Speaker 2: It was very embarrassing.
- 23:47Speaker 1: And apparently as Jesus enters the synagogue and as people
- 23:50Speaker 1: begin to gather in the synagogue, this man somehow, you know,
- 23:54Speaker 1: eye contact, somehow let Jesus see his hand as sort
- 23:57Speaker 1: of an invisible plea for help, like, hey, maybe when
- 24:00Speaker 1: this is over, we can go out back, or maybe
- 24:02Speaker 1: when this is over, I can follow you out of town.
- 24:04Speaker 2: But it was a plea for help.
- 24:06Speaker 1: But other people in the synagogue knew this man, and
- 24:08Speaker 1: they knew he had an injured hand as well. And
- 24:10Speaker 1: the text says that Peter says, I'll never forget this day.
- 24:12Speaker 1: Some of them, he said, it was unbelievable to me.
- 24:15Speaker 1: I knew these people. I just had no idea how
- 24:18Speaker 1: cruel they could be. Some of them were looking for
- 24:20Speaker 1: a reason to accuse Jesus, so they watched him closely
- 24:23Speaker 1: to see if he would heal this man on the Sabbath,
- 24:26Speaker 1: because their first century application of the law of the
- 24:29Speaker 1: Law of Moses to heal or to help someone on
- 24:33Speaker 1: the Sabbath was actually a sin. If somebody was dying,
- 24:36Speaker 1: you could rescue them, you know, if they were hanging
- 24:38Speaker 1: off a cliff or they were drowning, you could rescue them.
- 24:40Speaker 1: But if somebody just needed help or needed medical attention,
- 24:44Speaker 1: no help, no medical attention on the Sabbath. And Jesus
- 24:49Speaker 1: looks at the man and he interrupts whatever was happening
- 24:52Speaker 1: on the Sabbath in the synagogue, and he says this.
- 24:55Speaker 1: Jesus said to the man with his shriveled hand, this
- 24:57Speaker 1: was his this was his nightmare, this was worst day ever.
- 25:01Speaker 1: Stand up in front of everyone. It's like, what stand
- 25:07Speaker 1: up in front of everyone, see, and we're gonna talk
- 25:09Speaker 1: about this next week.
- 25:09Speaker 2: Don't miss next week.
- 25:11Speaker 1: It's these kinds of details that assure me and confirm
- 25:16Speaker 1: for me. Nobody made this up. Mark's like, do you
- 25:19Speaker 1: want me to write that down. Peter's like, I'm just
- 25:21Speaker 1: telling you what happened. Jesus calls him out in front
- 25:23Speaker 1: of the whole group, who were like, oh, no, stand up,
- 25:27Speaker 1: he said. And Jesus then turns to the audience, especially
- 25:30Speaker 1: to the Pharisees in the crowd. He asked him this question,
- 25:33Speaker 1: which is lawful on the Sabbath because he knew their minds,
- 25:35Speaker 1: he knew their hearts, which is lawful on the sabbath?
- 25:38Speaker 2: To do good or to do evil?
- 25:41Speaker 1: Which is lawful on the sabbath? To do good or
- 25:45Speaker 1: to do evil? Kind of a trick question, but you
- 25:47Speaker 1: know what his real question was. His real question is this,
- 25:49Speaker 1: What was God's purpose in giving us the law?
- 25:51Speaker 2: To begin with?
- 25:53Speaker 1: What was God's purpose in giving us the law? Why
- 25:55Speaker 1: did God give us rules? Is it to preserve the rules?
- 25:59Speaker 1: Is that what our mission life is? To preserve and
- 26:01Speaker 1: to honor the rules? Or is it something else? And
- 26:04Speaker 1: before they can answer, because they're not gonna answer, And
- 26:06Speaker 1: while they're thinking, he reiterates, did he ask you a
- 26:09Speaker 1: second way? He says, which is permissible on the sabbath
- 26:13Speaker 1: to do good or to do evil? To take it
- 26:15Speaker 1: to save a life or to kill, and maybe this
- 26:18Speaker 1: was literal. Maybe this man couldn't work, maybe nobody would
- 26:21Speaker 1: hire him. Maybe he was starving to death. Maybe this
- 26:23Speaker 1: injury had he was so debilitated it really was a
- 26:26Speaker 1: life or death.
- 26:26Speaker 2: Issue for him.
- 26:27Speaker 1: We don't know what's he getting at. What he is
- 26:31Speaker 1: getting at is this he goes back to that first
- 26:34Speaker 1: verse because actually the verse I showed you at the
- 26:36Speaker 1: beginning came right before this story. He's illustrating what he
- 26:40Speaker 1: had just taught. The question is is the law of
- 26:44Speaker 1: God for the benefit of God? Is the law of
- 26:47Speaker 1: God for the benefit of God?
- 26:49Speaker 2: I don't know how you were raised.
- 26:51Speaker 1: And nobody did this on purpose, I don't think, but
- 26:53Speaker 1: there were seasons of my life growing up in church,
- 26:55Speaker 1: and I love church, or at times I wondered if
- 26:58Speaker 1: maybe not in these terms, because I wasn't to have
- 27:00Speaker 1: these terms, but I was sort of left with the
- 27:02Speaker 1: impression that maybe the laws are for the benefit of
- 27:05Speaker 1: God because some of the laws are so weird, some
- 27:08Speaker 1: of the rules were so strange. They certainly weren't for
- 27:10Speaker 1: the benefit of me. They just got in the way
- 27:11Speaker 1: of me. So this is.
- 27:13Speaker 2: Jesus question, because this is a.
- 27:15Speaker 1: Huge paradigm shift are the laws for the benefit of God?
- 27:18Speaker 1: Or are the laws for the benefit of those that
- 27:21Speaker 1: God loves? Because if they're for the benefit of those
- 27:23Speaker 1: God loves, then people take precedent over the law. Children
- 27:31Speaker 1: aren't for the toys. The toys are for the children.
- 27:34Speaker 1: So we ask him these questions, Hey, what's the permissible
- 27:37Speaker 1: on the Sabbath to do good or evil? To heal
- 27:40Speaker 1: or to kill? And they're like children listening to a
- 27:45Speaker 1: parent or an uncle or an aunt. This happened to
- 27:47Speaker 1: us all the time growing up. Right, you were kind of,
- 27:49Speaker 1: you know, doing something wrong and your mom or your dad,
- 27:52Speaker 1: or you have a question. Your mom or dad ask
- 27:53Speaker 1: you a question, and you know the answer to the question.
- 27:55Speaker 1: The question is so clear, you know. But you know
- 27:58Speaker 1: if you answer the question out loud, then you will
- 28:00Speaker 1: be accountable to your own words. So you just you
- 28:02Speaker 1: just poudered, like, I'm not answering that I know the answer.
- 28:04Speaker 1: I know the right answer. So that's the situation there,
- 28:06Speaker 1: And they know the right answer. But if they answer
- 28:08Speaker 1: this correctly, they're giving Jesus permission to pursue this brand
- 28:13Speaker 1: new path that's so uncomfortable, so disruptive. So Peter said,
- 28:18Speaker 1: Mark's like, well, what do they say? And Peter's like, well,
- 28:21Speaker 1: they didn't say anything, They just stared. They knew if
- 28:25Speaker 1: they answered out loud, they're accountable to their words. And
- 28:31Speaker 1: how did Jesus respond? How does Jesus respond, if you're
- 28:38Speaker 1: considering Christianity, how does your heavenly father respond to people
- 28:42Speaker 1: who apply God's law in such a way that it
- 28:44Speaker 1: hurts those God loves? How does Jesus respond when religious
- 28:49Speaker 1: leaders use the law of God to hurt people made
- 28:52Speaker 1: in the image of God. The text says he looked
- 28:56Speaker 1: around in anger. The Greek and the New Testament is
- 29:01Speaker 1: oftentimes translated wrath the wrath of Jesus. And why is
- 29:07Speaker 1: he angry? He's angry because religious leaders used his father's
- 29:12Speaker 1: words and had interpreted it, his father's words in such
- 29:15Speaker 1: a way that the father's words were elevated over the
- 29:19Speaker 1: people his father loved. He goes on. He says, he
- 29:24Speaker 1: looked around at them in anger, and he was deeply
- 29:28Speaker 1: distressed at their stubborn hearts. They wouldn't even acknowledge what
- 29:34Speaker 1: they knew to be true. And Peter said, and then
- 29:38Speaker 1: it happened. He said to the man, stretch out your hand,
- 29:43Speaker 1: and he pulled it out of his sleeve, and his hand.
- 29:47Speaker 2: Was completely restored.
- 29:51Speaker 1: And the response of the Pharisees is so over the
- 29:54Speaker 1: top in our way of thinking, but it made perfect
- 29:57Speaker 1: sense to them because they could see what we meant.
- 30:00Speaker 1: Then the Pharisees. Then the Pharisees went out and began
- 30:03Speaker 1: to plot with the Herodians how they might kill Jesus.
- 30:08Speaker 1: Is like, wait, hang on, hang on, Run him out
- 30:12Speaker 1: of town, you know, run him back home, you know,
- 30:14Speaker 1: send him to Jerusalem, you know, maybe arrest him, maybe
- 30:16Speaker 1: put him on a cart. Wait, you want to murder
- 30:19Speaker 1: a rabbi because he healed on the Sabbath. But they
- 30:24Speaker 1: understood what's easy for us to miss. There was no
- 30:30Speaker 1: way to blend, and this is what they would try
- 30:33Speaker 1: to do. This is what unfortunately, religious people have tried
- 30:37Speaker 1: to do ever since. There was no way to blend
- 30:39Speaker 1: what they were trying to preserve with the kingdom Jesus
- 30:42Speaker 1: had come to establish. There was no way for them
- 30:46Speaker 1: to blend the kingdom, the mindset, the framework, the view
- 30:50Speaker 1: of God that they were trying so desperately to defend.
- 30:53Speaker 1: They could not blend that with the kingdom, the mindset,
- 30:56Speaker 1: the worldview that Jesus had come to establish He had
- 31:00Speaker 1: indeed come to reverse the order of just about everything,
- 31:07Speaker 1: the Sabbath, the law, the rules. God gave those for
- 31:12Speaker 1: the benefit of mankind, not the Sabbath, that they were
- 31:17Speaker 1: given for the benefit of mankind, rather than the other
- 31:20Speaker 1: way around. That God is like a good parent. He
- 31:24Speaker 1: loves you more than he loves his rules, even those
- 31:28Speaker 1: big ten. And then Peter goes on. He drags us
- 31:32Speaker 1: through another couple of narratives. All of this is happening
- 31:34Speaker 1: way up here at the top of the sea galley,
- 31:36Speaker 1: and then the strangest thing happens suddenly out of nowhere
- 31:40Speaker 1: first time they appear in the story in Peter's account.
- 31:43Speaker 1: Suddenly Mary, the mother of Jesus, shows up outside of
- 31:47Speaker 1: Capernaum with Jesus' brothers, and there's all this controversy, and
- 31:51Speaker 1: they kind of make their way through the crowd, and
- 31:53Speaker 1: they try to take Jesus out of the crowd and
- 31:55Speaker 1: take him home and rescue him from himself. And then
- 31:59Speaker 1: she's something about her son that some of you moms
- 32:02Speaker 1: have said about some of your children too. Again, here's it.
- 32:05Speaker 1: We're gonna talk about this a little bit in depth
- 32:06Speaker 1: next time. Don't miss next time, because this is the
- 32:08Speaker 1: kind of thing I'm sure when Peter said it, you know,
- 32:11Speaker 1: Mark's like, okay, you want me to write really sure
- 32:16Speaker 1: you want to include this in the story. Peter's like,
- 32:18Speaker 1: I'm just telling you what happened. Mary shows up, his
- 32:21Speaker 1: brothers show up. They're trying to get Jesus to leave
- 32:24Speaker 1: with them and go back home. And when we asked Mary,
- 32:27Speaker 1: why do you know what she said about her own son,
- 32:29Speaker 1: Mark's like, what he is out of his mind? I
- 32:35Speaker 1: quote Mary says about Jesus, he is out of his mind.
- 32:39Speaker 1: This doesn't look good on Mary, and this doesn't look
- 32:41Speaker 1: good on Jesus. Why is it in the Gospel of Mark?
- 32:46Speaker 1: Because it happened and they didn't pull any punches and
- 32:51Speaker 1: they didn't sand off the red edges. Peter says, I know,
- 32:54Speaker 1: we couldn't believe it, and we will pick up the
- 32:58Speaker 1: storyline next time right there in part four of You're
- 33:02Speaker 1: Not Far. But before we go, two quick takeaways.
- 33:05Speaker 2: All right, this is so important.
- 33:07Speaker 1: Look up here if you are a sinner, and you
- 33:12Speaker 1: are if you are a sinner, you are invited to
- 33:17Speaker 1: follow Jesus beginning today from wherever you start with whatever
- 33:21Speaker 1: you got going on. This is the lesson if you
- 33:26Speaker 1: are a sinner now, if you are somebody who is
- 33:28Speaker 1: willing to acknowledge, like leave I did. Something's wrong with me,
- 33:33Speaker 1: Something's up with me, something's broken in me. I fall
- 33:38Speaker 1: short of my own standard. I can't dig myself out
- 33:42Speaker 1: of my own hole. I can't be the husband I
- 33:45Speaker 1: swore I would be. I can't be the wife I
- 33:48Speaker 1: want to be. I can't be the parent I want
- 33:50Speaker 1: to be. I can't show the respect to my parents.
- 33:52Speaker 1: I know they deserve, but I just can't seem to
- 33:54Speaker 1: control my mouth. I need help. The invitation is wide
- 33:59Speaker 1: open to you. You are invited to begin today from
- 34:03Speaker 1: wherever you start following Jesus. So I can say it
- 34:07Speaker 1: this way. If you lived in the first century and
- 34:11Speaker 1: you had going on what you've got going on now,
- 34:13Speaker 1: Jesus would seek you out, and he would invite you,
- 34:18Speaker 1: as you are, to take a step and to follow him.
- 34:23Speaker 1: He would come to your door and knock and invite
- 34:26Speaker 1: himself in. And you may be uncomfortable with what he
- 34:30Speaker 1: found inside of your house, but he would not be,
- 34:33Speaker 1: and he would be comfortable with you until you became
- 34:36Speaker 1: comfortable with him. That's what we see modeled in the Gospels,
- 34:42Speaker 1: and specifically in the Gospel of Mark. So follow second thing.
- 34:48Speaker 1: If you're already a follower, yield to Jesus. Say yes
- 34:52Speaker 1: to Jesus. When your will bumps up against his will,
- 34:56Speaker 1: you just say yes. And here's the great thing. You're
- 34:58Speaker 1: not saying yes to a list. You're not saying yes
- 35:02Speaker 1: to a law. You're saying yes to a person that
- 35:05Speaker 1: left us with one single, simple, all encompassing, but terrifying command.
- 35:12Speaker 1: He said, you are to treat people the way that
- 35:16Speaker 1: I have treated you. You are to love one another
- 35:21Speaker 1: the way that I have loved you. Follow me and
- 35:25Speaker 1: follow me into this different way of living, this different
- 35:28Speaker 1: way of life, this different worldview. Not a list, not
- 35:33Speaker 1: a law, a person, a person who came for you,
- 35:39Speaker 1: who invites you.
- 35:41Speaker 2: Because he loves you.
- 35:42Speaker 1: This is why we say all the time that our
- 35:44Speaker 1: church is following Jesus. Following Jesus, not believing. Following Jesus
- 35:49Speaker 1: will make your life better, and it'll make you better
- 35:51Speaker 1: at life. It'll make you better father, husband, It'll make
- 35:55Speaker 1: you better employer, employee. It'll make you a better son,
- 35:57Speaker 1: a better daughter. It'll make you a better person, not
- 36:00Speaker 1: simply because you believe something, but because you begin to
- 36:03Speaker 1: do and to change, because doing makes all the difference.
- 36:06Speaker 1: And that is the invitation to follow. The really cool thing.
- 36:10Speaker 1: And I'll close with is Levi, who really we know
- 36:12Speaker 1: more is Matthew same person, Matthew Levi. When he says
- 36:16Speaker 1: yes to Jesus, he eventually gets the opportunity to write
- 36:18Speaker 1: one of the gospels. Matthew Mark Luke John, same guy.
- 36:21Speaker 2: Levi.
- 36:21Speaker 1: I wrote the Gospel of Matthew. Levi had employees. Matthew
- 36:25Speaker 1: had employees, He had scribes, so they followed Jesus around.
- 36:27Speaker 1: They wrote it all down. It's an incredible gospel. And
- 36:30Speaker 1: here's one of the things that's unique to Matthew's gospel
- 36:33Speaker 1: that he wrote down that Jesus said. And maybe he
- 36:37Speaker 1: wrote this down and made sure he included this because
- 36:39Speaker 1: it was so important to him in light of his background.
- 36:43Speaker 1: One day Jesus was teaching and he said this, this
- 36:45Speaker 1: is for all of us. He said, take my yoke
- 36:51Speaker 1: upon you. You have a yoke. You have a way
- 36:54Speaker 1: of life, you have a way of doing life, you
- 36:56Speaker 1: have a way of approaching the world. He said, I
- 36:58Speaker 1: want you to put yours down and take my mind
- 37:00Speaker 1: on you. It's a better yoke than the one you're
- 37:02Speaker 1: currently carrying. Take my yoke upon you learn from me.
- 37:09Speaker 1: Just sit at my feet and listen and learn. For
- 37:13Speaker 1: I am gentle and I am humble in heart. And
- 37:17Speaker 1: at the end of the day, you will find rest
- 37:20Speaker 1: for your soul. You will find rest on the inside.
- 37:24Speaker 1: You will find peace you can't imagine even exist. And
- 37:31Speaker 1: if that version of faith, if that version of religion
- 37:37Speaker 1: stands in contrast to what you were presented with by
- 37:41Speaker 1: your pastor your priest or your parents, perhaps they were
- 37:46Speaker 1: trying to pour the new wine of Jesus into an
- 37:50Speaker 1: old container. And at the end of the day, to you,
- 37:53Speaker 1: it just felt like a big mess. Because Jesus did
- 37:58Speaker 1: not come to tweak something old. He came to establish
- 38:02Speaker 1: something brand new. He came to introduce something new and
- 38:08Speaker 1: to use his word, something near because the time had come,
- 38:14Speaker 1: The Kingdom of God has come near. And your invitation,
- 38:18Speaker 1: his invitation to you and to me, is to turn
- 38:21Speaker 1: and to face it and to embrace it. And when
- 38:25Speaker 1: we do, life begins to change. Here. Embrace here and
- 38:33Speaker 1: learn here, and believe this good news, and don't miss
- 38:41Speaker 1: next week
