  The Baltimore Colts faced the Pittsburgh Steelers at Three River Stadium for week one of the 1974 NFL season on September 15, 1974.

  The Colts were coached by Howard Schnellenberger, but the team had been reeling for the past season and a half after the departure of the legend Johnny Unitus.

  They finished the past two seasons well under 500, which was quite the difference from the 15 consecutive winning seasons that preceded it.

  The Steelers were coming off a strong 10-4 season in 1973 and a division title in 1972.

  They were led by head coach Chuck Knoll, who would finally turn the team around that struggled in the bottom of the AFC throughout the 1960s.

  Frank Lewis was injured mildly in the pregame warm-up. He will probably see action this afternoon but will not start as a wide receiver.

  In his stead will go John Stoller, 62-183 pound rookie from Alabama, and M.

  In the interior line at left tackle John Cole, the six-year veteran from Oklahoma State. Sam Davis is back at left guard, the captain of the defensive unit, eight-year veteran from Allen.

  Ray Mansfield at center in his 12th year from Washington. At right guard Jerry Mullins, four-year veteran from Southern Cal.

  At right tackle Gordon Revelle in his third year from Brigham Young.

  And the tight end will be Larry Brown, the four-year veteran from Kansas in the backfield for the Steelers.

  There'll be an interesting battle shaping up this afternoon between Frank O'Harris and Lydell Mitchell.

  They played together as running back to Penn State. Mitchell got by far the most publicity.

  Steelers took Frank O'Harris as sort of a sleeper. Not a real sleepy sleeper, but anyway, Lydell Mitchell had been the man with the publicity.

  Frank O'Harris was selected to the Steelers in his rookie season, had a great, great year.

  Lydell Mitchell was unheard of.

  Last year Frank O'Harris tapered off and Mitchell team threw an almost out of 1,000-yard season bearing the ball.

  And starting at right end, John Dutton, a rookie from Nebraska. So they start two rookies in the

  In the middle, Mike Curtis, the 10-year veteran from Duke. And on the right side, Stan White in

  his third year from Ohio State. At the left corner, Doug Nettles, a rookie from Vanderbilt.

  On the right corner, Nelson Muncie in his third year from Wyoming. The strong safety, Bruce

  Blair, three-year veteran from American International. And the free safety, Rick Bolt,

  V-O-L-K in his eighth year from Michigan. So this is the first game of the season, Myron. And I hope

  you're ready. Well, I'm ready. And I hope Joe Gilliam is. He got a wonderful line of applause from

  the fans when he was introduced. He must have felt 10 feet tall. All the magazines in here

  to cover his debut. Joe's day.

  Marine color guard is advancing on the field from the end of our right.

  Hit bad. He crossed the way of the sideline and now we have an excellent...

  Well, we have the Colts and the Steelers ready to go. And both teams gathering around their

  respective coaches. Howard Schnellenberger in the midst of that puddle across the way,

  chucking an old down below. And last night you had a coach working from the press box up above.

  Yes, Darryl Moudre of Florida State. That's where he prefers to be and when on the final play his

  past receiver failed to step out of bounds and caught some of the rest of the second remaining

  second. You might have wished he was down on the field to strangle the guy. Hey, Jack has an

  interesting angle to this game. There's a rookie starting at quarterback for the Colts. Doug Nettles,

  who is one of Joe Gilliam's closest friends down in Nashville. They've worked that, oh, golly,

  daily for four years together. And Doug Nettles says, I know Joe's going to go right after me. I

  know that's what he's going to do. He's a rookie cornerback. We'll watch that too. Some interesting
• 6:24
  things will happen this afternoon. Teed up at the 35, the kick will carry right to left. Tony

  Linhart will be the kicker. And the Steelers go deep with Preston Davis, Preston Pearson, and

  Steve Davis. That's the way to get off to a good start. Here comes Linhart, kicks it low, sailing,

  coming in, bouncing at the 10, back over the goal line and out of play. And Preston Pearson followed

  the ball right over the sideline. Well, how would you describe that play? Well, I'd describe it

  as a smart one by Preston Pearson, because the ball bounced in front of him. It was not a good

  kick. And really, that coverage was down there pretty fast. And the best thing he could have

  done was just let it roll into the end zone. I'll tell you one thing, you get the most complete

  analysis of a kick out of bounds of anybody I've ever seen. And it only took one bounce. That's

  pretty quick. Well, we're off to a good start this afternoon, Myron. This is going to be a good

  campaign. Yes, sir. Out of the huddle, they come. Stallworth goes wide to the left as the

  Planker and out to the near side to the right is Ron Shanklin. We're lined up in the I-formation,

  line, looks at a five-man front. Hands the ball off to Franco, comes outside to the right,

  and is caught and nailed. Just as he turned the corner, Stan White, the right sideline,

  backer, closed in on him. He'll get about a yard out of the play. So Franco picks up a yard,

  it's second down and nine yards to go. Tackle, Gordy, Gravel trying to clear the way for Franco,

  but not being able to clear his man out of there. And it sort of held Franco up and he opted to

  swing outside. And as Jack told you, not much yardage, almost nothing. We do a little flip-flopping

  with those linebackers. White has pulled up into position on the left side. Hearing in,

  and Joe Gilliam was calling signals now. He's got his flanker to the left split end of the right,

  and Gilliam is back short to throw fires. Shanklin can't hold it at the 41-yard line,

  double coverage, closing in on him. Doug Nettles and Rick Colt. So he went for Nettles right off

  the bat, and the pass was on the mark, but good coverage, and Shanklin cannot hold it.

  Just a little bit of a difficult catch for Ronnie. Had a reach down low, and as you said,

  Red Cook, a rookie in that forward wall, had left in, and John Dutton a rookie at right end.

  Well, Baltimore. It is third down nine. Now Gilliam backs up deep. Gilliam looks,

  looks, looks, fires there. Shanklin is off his fingertips and in complete, near the 44-yard line.

  Bruce Blair came over to cover, but he did not figure into play. Shanklin was open,

  went up in the air for the pass, and went off his fingertips and fell in complete,

  and we will give up the football. Baltimore that time in a 53 defense, the so-called 53,

  and they will use that almost as a standard defense. They'll use it in other words,

  is their quarterback, and he's sixth year from Columbia. He can run with the football he can

  pass, a very dangerous, scrambling type quarterback. Domres hands off the ball carried by Bill Oates,

  the right side he's nailed along the 30 yard line by LC Greenwood. Greenwood had that one completely

  figured from start to finish, and nailed him well short of a line of scrimmage, almost a

  three yard loss on the play back near the 30 yard line, where the Colts are going to be looking at

  a second down 13 situation. Olds, the second year man from Nebraska, Tisabal, started to his right,

  trying to get a sweep underway, and there was LC looking him in the eye. Lidell Mitchell out of

  10 state and Bill Oates on the running back, when doubt he is the wide receiver. They line up in the

  eye formation. Domres is the quarterback, wide slot to the left side for the Baltimore Colts.

  Here's Domres giving it to the top of the eye to Lidell Mitchell. He plows up the middle,

  comes to the 35 and onto the 36 yard line, runs into Joe Green, and down he goes, covered on the

  play by Dwight White, and Lambert plugging the gap up the middle from the middle line backer post.

  The ball is spotted at the 36 yard line. Defensively for the Steelers, Greenwood,

  Green, Holmes, and White in the front four, Pam, Lambert, and Russell are the linebackers. Lambert

  is the rookie from Kent State, JT Thomas, and Mel Blunt on the corners, Mike Wagner, and Glenn

  Edwards are the safeies. Third and seventh for Baltimore, Pittsburgh was offside. Here's Domres

  deep throwing out to the far side, and the passes off the fingertips of the intended receiver,

  Glenn Doughty, and Jack Ham had a shot at an interception, couldn't hold it. A flight goes

  down on the far side, one on the near side, and definitely Joe Green was offside. Yes, Joe got

  it crossed there. We'll see whether it's against the Steelers or the Colts have not as yet gotten a signal.

  Well, the officials are conferring now, and they're marking off a five yard penalty against

  Pittsburgh, and that is new life of Baltimore. Colts at their own 41 will have a third and two

  situation, and that should bring on a second tight end. They bring in Tim Barra, the rookie from

  Massachusetts, the son of New York Yankee manager, Yogi Barra, and that gives them the tight formation

  on third and short yardage. The flankers pulled in close on the left side to shift out of the eye

  formation. Domres gives them all the holes, holes running to the right, splits to the outside. He's

  to the 45, the 50, and into Pittsburgh territory at the 47 yard line before Glenn Edwards tracks him
• 12:45
  down. He was almost cut short of the line of scrimmage, managed to pull away and keep running,
• 12:51
  and with the defense bunched inside, managed to get to the outside running to the right,
• 12:55
  went almost to the sideline, and carried it into Pittsburgh territory for the first down at the

  48. The curious play, the stealer front line seems to get off the mark good, then old seems to

  stumble and then decide to go outside where there was nobody to meet him. Baltimore, first down 10,

  at the Pittsburgh 48, from the eye formation to Mitchell, top of the eye, cutting back into the

  middle of the line, runs over the 45 and down to the 43. Lydell Mitchell with two good carries now.

  Joe Green at the very base of the defense to play for the Pittsburgh Steelers, and the ball will be

  spotted at the 43 yard line, gain of five, and the second down five for the Baltimore Colts. No

  scoring the ball game, we're just underway at three rivers, 11 minutes and 30 seconds to play

  in the first quarter. Baltimore will line up in the eye. They put Glenn Dottie in a wide

  slot to the left side, working inside cotton spire. Now they send Dottie in motion to the right,

  and Dom Ray hands the ball off to Lydell Mitchell, cuts just off the right side, is down over the

  40, onto the 37 yard line, where Elsie Greenwood makes the stop, and I believe he has a first down.

  Should have it by about a yard, it's signal that's the second first down for the Baltimore Colts.

  They have not gone to the air, and they have moved the football

  into Pittsburgh territory. Lydell flying right by Joe Green on that play, he had a big year last

  year, Lydell over 900 yards. There is the handoff given to Bill Olds, and Olds is stacked up at the

  line of scrimmage, ran into Jack Ham, trying to run off the right side, Ham stacked him up at the 37

  yard line, they give him about a half yard pickup on the play, second down and almost 10 to go.

  This fellow Olds is a big running back, and they put him in there perhaps on a theory

  that Lydell Mitchell not being so big, well he needs to have that fact offset.

  Except they're flanker far out to the right side, bring the split into the near side of the field,

  and Don Reyes will go back to pass for the first time, screen pass to the left end is wide,

  the intended receiver Bill Olds is the 40 yard line, had a screen of three blockers in front of him.

  Well Andy Russell gave Glenn Ressler a shot with the forearm in the chest after the play was over,

  and they exchanged a few words, it was just a follow-through and a play didn't amount to much

  the three-year man from Wake Forest, setting up four linebackers, and what would appear to be an

  obvious passing situation, third down nine and a half, Colts are at the Pittsburgh 37 yard line.

  Again they put Dottie in the wide slot to the near side, and Don Reyes goes deep

  flagged down, Don Reyes gets rid of the ball, caught down to the Pittsburgh 25 yard line by Glenn Dottie,

  Dottie King down in the cross, he's tackled by Glenn Edwards and Jack Lambert at the 25,

  penalty marker was already down, and somebody landed a good shot on Don Reyes,

  and now we get the Colts for holding, but there's going to be a 15 yard penalty against

  Baltimore, fifth, third will accept that penalty, and Don Reyes picks himself up.

  Well Joe Green gave him a terrific shot just as he got rid of the ball, it was like a dying

  quail the pass was, and Don Reyes was a while getting himself off the ground because Joe hit him

  a mid-shift. Well the Steelers have been hit with one five-yard penalty, Baltimore takes

  the 15 yarder, a major penalty, that moves the football back to the Steeler 47 yard line,

  there's no scoring the ball game, nine minutes 56 seconds to play in the opening period,

  it is now third down to 20 yards to go, Colts at the Pittsburgh 47,

  Cotton's fire goes to the far side, they bring Glenn Dottie to the near side,

  and here's the handoff, Carrivala Del Mitchell sweep to the left, turns the corner to 45,

  then over the 40 and onto the 35 yard line, coming to the near side of the field, he finally

  is hit by Mike Wagner, aided by Andy Russell, and he brings the ball to the Pittsburgh 35 yard

  line and they will set it up just inside, now they finally just put the tail end of the football

  at the 35, it is fourth down and eight yards to go, but let's see what Baltimore likes to do at

  Lee and let him punt the football, otherwise a long long field goal attempt would probably fall

  short, and then has to bring the ball back to the 35 under the new rules, Lee Fanning at the

  and then Swan to the near side, here's the snap and the punt, kicking very softly,

  angling it toward the coffin corner, Swan pulls it in at the seven, stepped out of bounds as he

  that coffin corner, and I think that in all probability that ball would have gone out inside

  gutsy move too because they were coming down there at him, but he was determined to try to get that

  fund it. Linebackers stay in white and he's a good one blitzing on that play and I think we can

  look for the Colts to do a heck of a lot of blitzing today because they know that Gilliam did

  have a hot hand off through those exhibition games. They got to try something and so far

  it's well he's zero for four for five. All right Laird is the deep man and the fund is very high

  sailing and it's coming down to and it's Laird trying to catch the ball and it's away from him

  recovered by the Steelers. Laird was buying with Nelson Muncie for the ball and it bounced off his

  chest and Reggie Garrett climbed on it for the Steelers at the 46 yard line and that's where

  Pittsburgh has it. Laird and Muncie were shoulder to shoulder waiting to receive that fund at the 48

  yard line. A mix up in their signals and the ball bounced off Laird's chest and the Steelers recovered.

  Well Reggie Garrett is the fifth wide receiver on the Steeler roster. He's good on his special

  as Stalard made a brilliant catch leaping in the air and bringing the ball in from his left side

  as the pass hooked in behind him and that will be the sixth pass for Gilliam and the first one
