- 1:06back to this week's episode of the Random Heathen Ramblings
- 1:08podcast. How y'all doing today?
- 1:11How are you all doing today? I've been in the South for 20
- 1:14years and I still throw out the yalls every now and then.
- 1:16So don't, don't, don't come after me.
- 1:18All you native New Yorkers and such, I still say, Yas, you know
- 1:25how he's doing all that. But yeah, hope you're all are
- 1:29all doing well. And yeah, it's just just doing
- 1:33well overall, you know, it's, it's been how shall we say
- 1:41life's been. Life lately for a lot of folks.
- 1:45You know, we're all feeling it in different ways.
- 1:48Some of us are getting. Hit with with life pretty hard
- 1:52and just. Going through some stuff, you
- 1:55know, so whatever it is that you're you're going through,
- 1:59first of all, thank you for coming here and listening or
- 2:01watching this week's episode to hopefully help put your mind and
- 2:06your heart at ease and just have a little bit of time to reflect
- 2:10or to, you know, maybe hear about something that interests
- 2:14you or learn about something that you haven't heard of or
- 2:17seen before. Either which way, thank you for
- 2:21making Midgard Musings and the Random Heathen Ramblings show a
- 2:26part of your activities. So for those of you out here
- 2:29listening on the podcast airwaves across Spotify, I said
- 2:34acrossed. I meant across.
- 2:37We're not crossing, crossing where we're crossing going
- 2:41across the platforms, whether it be Spotify, Apple Podcast,
- 2:48iHeartRadio, Amazon Music, wherever it is that you're
- 2:50listening to this. Halen, welcome to you.
- 2:52This is your first time. Please give consideration to to
- 2:56follow this podcast on whatever platform it is that you're
- 2:59listening to. If you want to watch this show,
- 3:01This is also available in full video format, you know, HD,
- 3:081080P, whatever, I guess I don't know over on Patreon.
- 3:13So if you just go to patreon.com/midgard Musings,
- 3:17you'll find me there and you can join to watch my video of shows
- 3:22at just a $1.00 pledge. I noticed a lot of folks join my
- 3:26Patreon at the free level and while there are some things that
- 3:29I do share periodically, I need to get better about that to kind
- 3:33of connect with my Patreon audience to, to see the video
- 3:37versions of the show. If you just join as as a free
- 3:41member, you're not going to be able to watch all of the full
- 3:44length video podcasts. You'll get to see clips of each
- 3:47show, but they only go for about two minutes before it, it
- 3:51prompts you to, to open up that pledge.
- 3:53So you can kind of take it for a test drive if you want, watch a
- 3:56couple of free clips, which you know, I'm also on, on Facebook
- 4:01and YouTube as well and Instagram.
- 4:02So you can always catch the clips there.
- 4:05But if you do want to watch the full version of the of the show,
- 4:09it's a $1.00 pledge. And you can watch all the shows
- 4:12if you want at once and not renew your pledge.
- 4:15But renewing that pledge every month does help with the
- 4:17production cost of the show. And I know a dollar doesn't seem
- 4:20like a lot. It really isn't if you think of
- 4:22the grand scheme of things, of what things are costing these
- 4:25days. But believe me, you know, one
- 4:28person pledging $1.00 turns into two turns into five turns into
- 4:3210. So if you were one of those
- 4:34people that would like to help with the production of this show
- 4:37every week, every month, you know, going forward, that $1.00
- 4:41pledge helps out greatly. And you can also join at other
- 4:43tiers. I do have other tiers available
- 4:46with with added perks and stuff. But yeah, if you just want to
- 4:51join at the at the Carl tier, that's that's greatly
- 4:54appreciated. And if you don't, that's OK too.
- 4:56You can still listen for free. You can still share these videos
- 4:59or these these clips around and you can share the audio versions
- 5:03around too. So if you know people that you
- 5:05think be would be interested in catching this show, please share
- 5:09it around. And that helps greatly too.
- 5:10The more ears and eyes we can get in and in front of out here
- 5:15in this crazy world, the better. So thank you all so very much
- 5:18for that. Another quick update for you all
- 5:20in case you missed it. I will be joining the folks at
- 5:25the Viking Experience for my first Viking Experience in
- 5:28Oxford, NC next month. That'll be the weekend of March
- 5:3322nd and 23rd. They will be doing this two
- 5:37weekends I believe, so the 22nd, 23rd, and then that's what are
- 5:40the 29th and the 30th and the following weekend.
- 5:42So 2 weekends. Oxford, NC, the Viking
- 5:46experience, all kinds of of cool things going on there.
- 5:50Lots of vendors, lots of exhibitions, workshops, classes.
- 5:56And yours truly will be there as their resident rune reader.
- 6:01So I will have a canopy set up near where the vendors are
- 6:04located. So when and as you're out there
- 6:06perusing things and picking up accoutrements and various items
- 6:11of that interest you, do please consider to come by my booth and
- 6:17get a rune reading. Ioffer different types of
- 6:20readings. I'll do a single rune reading,
- 6:21I'll do a three rune spread, and then I'll do a full rune cast
- 6:24wherein I reach into the bag of the Elder Futhark runes and I
- 6:27grab a handful and I toss them onto a white animal skin and
- 6:32read the runes for you. So prices range anywheres from,
- 6:37you know, $10.00 for a single rune reading to 25 for the rune
- 6:40casting. And those ring casts take the
- 6:43take a good, you know, good bit of time anywheres between, you
- 6:46know, 30 minutes to sometimes between 30 minutes to an hour
- 6:49long, depending on what we have to unpack and what layers we
- 6:52have to peel. You know, it's almost like it's
- 6:54almost like peeling back the layers of an onion or, or, or or
- 6:58digging through the layers of a of a seven layer cake.
- 7:01You know everything that you. Reach every layer that you.
- 7:04Uncover reveals something new. Perhaps.
- 7:08So again, I will be there just the one weekend.
- 7:12So if you want to come and say hi, even if you don't want to
- 7:16ruin reading, say hey, listen to your show, love the show.
- 7:18It would be great to, you know, meet some some supporters out
- 7:21here, get a picture maybe for social medias, all that fun
- 7:24stuff. So yeah, hoping to see you all
- 7:26there. That'll be March 22nd and 23rd.
- 7:30For more information and about your tickets, visit
- 7:33thevikingexperience.com and we hope to see you there.
- 7:38All right, folks. So today, this week, we've got
- 7:41no guests once again, but we do have a request, sort of a
- 7:45request. One of the things that when I
- 7:48talk about Patreon, you know, I'm always talking about it and
- 7:50always saying, hey, come on over, you know, join the
- 7:52community. One of the things that you get
- 7:54when you join the Patreon community is you get access to
- 7:57our community chat. You know, so when you join that
- 8:00Carl tier, you can join our community chat.
- 8:04And in that community chat is is a place for you to request
- 8:08things like, you know, topics and whatnot that you want to
- 8:11hear talk about on this show. So as a supporter on Patreon,
- 8:15your requests, your ideas, your thoughts, your wishes become
- 8:19priority to me. So if I happen to have something
- 8:23that I want to be talking about and you come in and you give me
- 8:25something else to talk about first or even second or third or
- 8:29whatever, you know, if I have something and you come in with
- 8:31something, your topic gets bumped to the front.
- 8:36So thankfully we don't have a huge backlog of things to to
- 8:38talk about. And so this week's topic is
- 8:41going to be one of the questions that came in from Michael
- 8:44Thacker. And Michael has been a great
- 8:46contributor of this show, always chiming in and saying hello
- 8:50during the the YouTube live streams once a month and very
- 8:54active, you know, asking questions or commenting and
- 9:00sharing his thoughts. So he's a great member of of the
- 9:03Patreon community. And just the, the, the Pagan
- 9:05slash heathen community that we have here in this capacity and
- 9:09in, in, in his role, I know he has a, a role that he serves in
- 9:13his, in his local community. So it's great to to hear things
- 9:16from other heathens out there wanting to have some things
- 9:20talked. About South Michael this week
- 9:22wanted to have a topic brought up which I'm always happy to
- 9:27talk about and that is the topic of.
- 9:30You know the land spirits. Land whites, land vittier, for
- 9:35anybody who's been following this show or subscribed or, or
- 9:40listens to this or whatever, you know, if, if you've been hanging
- 9:43around in, in my communities long enough, you know, like the
- 9:47land vittier and land veneration, the, the animism,
- 9:51you know, is, is a huge part of my heathenry.
- 9:54It's a big part of my spirituality.
- 9:56So having a topic come up that that involves such things.
- 10:00We're having guests on the show that involves talking about such
- 10:05things is always. A joy for me.
- 10:10So one, one thing that he was, I think talking about in in in our
- 10:15community chat was deepening our connection.
- 10:20With the land vitir or strengthening those bonds with
- 10:24the local spirits of the land that we kind of cohabitate with
- 10:29and and that reside. In around us and beside us, so
- 10:33to speak. And I thought, yeah, why not
- 10:37talk about that? You know, so, so, so I think
- 10:43some of what I'm going to be covering are my own personal
- 10:48UPG. You know, this will be another
- 10:50episode wherein a lot of that leaks through.
- 10:53But my UPGI think is is I mean, it's mine.
- 10:58I don't, I don't need to, I don't need to, you know, fluff
- 11:03it up or, or make it anything more than what it is.
- 11:07But from when, when I talk to others, you know, about stuff
- 11:11like this, even though we're different heathens, we're
- 11:14different people. The there's there's some so much
- 11:18similarities between the way we think and the way we see the
- 11:22world when, especially when it comes to stuff like.
- 11:24This. That I think if you take a poll
- 11:28and you go around, you talk to different folks, you might hear
- 11:32some of the same things. So for those that maybe don't
- 11:36know if you know this is your first episode or this is your
- 11:39first time hearing what am I talking about?
- 11:41Land Veitier land whites. So these are just terms that are
- 11:47very common in Germanic slash Scandinavian folklore and such,
- 11:55which is a term that is used to define or describe the local
- 12:00spirits of the land. Because the word vaitir is is is
- 12:04a word that means in Old Norse it just means spirit in white,
- 12:08not WHITE. So not like the shade or the
- 12:12color white, but whites. WIGHTS is an old.
- 12:16English word, I believe that again just means, you know,
- 12:19spirit. So land whites, land spirits,
- 12:23land Vaitir, land spirits. And again, Veitier is being it's
- 12:30a Scandinavian or Old Norse. Word for for that.
- 12:35So, you know, if you're in the United States or you're not in
- 12:39Europe and you know, you won't just call them land spirits.
- 12:42We're we're talking about the same thing.
- 12:45And So what are we talking about that when, when it comes to
- 12:47that, what are they, they are just what, what it says.
- 12:51They, they are the spirit of the land.
- 12:53It is the spirit that is, exists in the landscape that can
- 12:59sometimes manifest itself in different ways in, in some of
- 13:05the lore or some of the yeah, some of the folklore and some of
- 13:07the sagas even there's the the the Norse sagas, at least I can
- 13:11think 1. You know, I believe it's maybe
- 13:15not Iggiel. Scala Grimson because.
- 13:16That's the one where he, he curses the king and the queen
- 13:20and it's and it scares the, the Vaitier.
- 13:23But there's another saga and it's escaping my mind, but I
- 13:26will, I will link it down below or I'll put it up here on screen
- 13:29for you, for those of you watching, but I'll also link it
- 13:31down below for those of you listening, where the, where the
- 13:36land spirits of Iceland are described.
- 13:39You know, the, and there's four different ones and they are very
- 13:41descriptive. You know, one looking like a
- 13:43dragon, one looking like a, a giant person, another one, you
- 13:46know, looking like an eagle and and, and and and other things.
- 13:50And there there's been a recent episode here just on this season
- 13:54where I've mentioned some of those sources too.
- 13:56So if you want to go back or listen to that.
- 14:01Or, you know, or watch it. I'll yeah, I I think it was
- 14:05either episode 3 or or. Four maybe of of of season 6.
- 14:11Anyway, I'll link it for all of you too, but the but that's what
- 14:15you know, so, so the land whites or the land spirits can often
- 14:19times manifest themselves in physical form and in the form of
- 14:23animals or other physical, you know, they, they can take on
- 14:28physical form. But but ultimately it is, it is
- 14:33the spirit of that landscape. So there are mountain spirits or
- 14:37Galvetir, you know, there are water spirits.
- 14:40There are. Spirits in the rock, spirits in
- 14:43the in the trees, there are, there are spirits of the
- 14:45mountains, spirits of the river, you know.
- 14:47So there is everything contains spirit goes back to the
- 14:50animistic viewpoints in the animistic ways of northern
- 14:56European spirituality. There's a lot of animism
- 14:59interwoven in and throughout that.
- 15:05So. Sometimes the the the the spirit
- 15:11or the spirits of the land, they can be, They can be benevolent,
- 15:16they can be peaceful, they can be on your side.
- 15:21And then there's other times where the spirits inhabiting a
- 15:23place can be malevolent. They can be.
- 15:25Bad to the human population, you know, or they can be devious, or
- 15:32they can be harmful. You know they can.
- 15:35They can do things to to bring harm in various ways.
- 15:40And how does that manifest itself?
- 15:42So you read through some of the through some of the through some
- 15:47of the lore and such, you'll, you'll see an understanding that
- 15:51people had of these spirits that when.
- 15:56The spirits were. In a good mood and when they
- 15:59were happy. The land was in was in good
- 16:03shape. You know, the the crops were,
- 16:05were plentiful. There was no war.
- 16:07Tearing families apart and destroying the land.
- 16:10You know, there, there was health.
- 16:12There was an illness and everything was, was, you know,
- 16:17life was, was, was copacetic. You know, if people were OK,
- 16:19everything was all right, we're groovy.
- 16:22And if they're the spirits of the land were upset or scared
- 16:25away or disrespected or, or, or anything like that, you know,
- 16:29they the and it would show in the way that how the land
- 16:32responded. So they would, you know, crops
- 16:34would suck, war would come, sickness would would prevail.
- 16:38Strife, turmoil would, would would exist.
- 16:42So there's this connection, you know, between how things were
- 16:47going and how that was, was was was understood to be how the the
- 16:54land spirits were, were being treated and how they were
- 16:57behaving. So for Michael to want to talk
- 17:01about strengthening our bonds, you know, or our connection with
- 17:07the land spirits belief comes from a place of wanting to make
- 17:11sure that things are OK in in the landscape around in the.
- 17:15Places that you are. And I know for me, you know,
- 17:23living where I live is a, is, you know, I live near the Stones
- 17:27River in Middle Tennessee. It's a It's a densely populated.
- 17:30Area There are a lot of homes near and around me.
- 17:35So, you know, there's a lot of mixing of things going, going
- 17:42around in, in where I live. And some folks, I'm sure
- 17:44listening and watching can relate to this as well,
- 17:47Especially if you live in a highly densely populated area or
- 17:51residential neighborhood or even an apartment complex or, you
- 17:55know, inner city kind of kind of sort of living living.
- 17:59You know, you've got humans elbows to asses next to each
- 18:04other pretty much. You know, in what space do you
- 18:06have to cohabitate with the spirits of the land, the natural
- 18:10landscape. Seems like the more people set
- 18:16up places of their own, the less that the spirits of the land
- 18:21have to, to, to share that space with.
- 18:23Or, you know, they, they, they have that space, but it's not
- 18:26being respected and people are just coming in and arbitrarily
- 18:29just doing whatever they're doing without care.
- 18:31Or concern for the spirits of the land that were there first.
- 18:38So when you, when we talk about, you know, strengthening our
- 18:43bonds, bonds connecting with the spirits of the land, this is
- 18:46important. Thing for, for a lot of
- 18:48heathens, it is particularly for me, which is why I'm so glad to
- 18:51talk about it. If you're living in a space or
- 18:55moving to his place, maybe perhaps you, you've been there
- 18:58for so long and, and, and you just haven't thought about it
- 19:01yet. Or maybe you're, you're
- 19:02relocating and you're going to a new place.
- 19:08Establishing a connection with the spirits of that land, the
- 19:13local residents as they were, is critical.
- 19:17It's crucial because without doing so, you can come in and
- 19:22interrupt their their life. It's it's, it's invasion, You
- 19:29know, if you think about it, and I'm sorry, but if, you know, if
- 19:33I was just going about my day-to-day life, you know, doing
- 19:38my normal thing, I'm sitting here, you know, recording the
- 19:39podcast and then somebody else comes in here and it's like, all
- 19:42right, this is my house now and you got to go.
- 19:44And they start just trucking my stuff out the window.
- 19:46I am going to be. Upset it's going to I'm going
- 19:51you know, it's it's it's going to to be a way that I, I I feel
- 19:55that is going to, you know, externally affect and impact
- 19:58everything so. I wouldn't want to do that to
- 20:02the space that I'm moving to. And even in my own space, even
- 20:06in my own residence, you know, my own house, there are places
- 20:14and there are, there are. Corners.
- 20:16There are areas, there are. Sections of the home that.
- 20:19You know. If, if we rearrange things, if
- 20:21we move things around, I want to be respectful of the space that
- 20:26I've set up for the resident spirit to reside because yes,
- 20:31this is my home, but in my home also contains, you know.
- 20:35Spirit there is the spirit of the house, the Kolf God, The
- 20:38hosfatir Kolf God, I believe is. Is more of an old English term
- 20:46and and and his fatir might be more towards the the the
- 20:49Scandinavian or or Norse leaning terminology for it, but it it
- 20:54means the same thing, the spirit.
- 20:55Of the house, the spirit of the home, the God of the home.
- 20:58You know what, what what figure, what spirit is, is respected,
- 21:04worshipped, venerated. As as the guardian of that home,
- 21:10as as the caretaker, as we're the caretakers.
- 21:12But you know what I'm saying, Like the, the overseer, the
- 21:14guardian of that place. So to maintain good
- 21:18relationships, you know, talk about deepening connections,
- 21:22strengthening our bonds. It's, it can be very simple,
- 21:25right? What do you, what do you do when
- 21:26you want to strengthen a bond with a friend, with somebody who
- 21:31you're wanting to get to know? What do you do to strengthen
- 21:34that bond? Well, first of all you
- 21:36introduce. Yourselves.
- 21:38You know, hi, so and so my name is Jesse.
- 21:40Nice to meet you. This is where I'm from.
- 21:43Then I'm I'm going to be, I'm going to be your neighbor.
- 21:45You know, I'm moving in next door, I'm moving in downstairs,
- 21:49I'm moving in upstairs, whatever, you know.
- 21:51And anyway, just wanted to introduce you and you know, by
- 21:55the way, you know, I see, you know, and, and so you build a
- 21:58rapport, you know, start exchanging maybe some
- 22:01information, maybe make a meal, share sharing, sharing a coffee
- 22:06or something, right? Like this is your common things
- 22:09that that people do to establish a relationship, establish a
- 22:13connection with the cohabitants of your space, whether it's a
- 22:17neighborhood or, you know, the land nearby, You know how
- 22:22however far or near your neighbor might be.
- 22:25These are gestures to show that. Hi I'm.
- 22:28Here to just peacefully coexist with you so similarly.
- 22:35Doing things like this with the unseen acts as a sort of peace
- 22:40offering it, it lets the entity know or the entities, it lets
- 22:45them know that who is this person that's coming here in
- 22:49Myspace now? Oh, they're, they're not so bad.
- 22:51They're coming with peace, right?
- 22:53They're there, they're coming with gifts.
- 22:55They're coming with kindness, with a kind word, with, with
- 22:59good smelling items, you know? Food a nice beverage.
- 23:03A clean space to live in. Wow.
- 23:05This is nice that they clean this whole area out for me,
- 23:08right? And it puts it it it starts off
- 23:11with a good connection. It starts off with a good
- 23:13relationship. So again, just like with
- 23:16anybody, you have to establish that connection 1st and then
- 23:18once you establish that connection to maintain it, to
- 23:21build it, to strengthen it, there needs to be reciprocity.
- 23:25So if I am talking to a neighbor who is a new neighbor to me
- 23:32perhaps, and I go to them and I say, hey, I'm moving in right
- 23:36here or there, whatever, I'm next door behind you, whatever
- 23:39here is, you know, a fresh loaf of bread that I made or some
- 23:43Donuts, right? Or or a.
- 23:45Casserole or something, you know, it's nice to know you,
- 23:48nice to meet you. I'm new to the neighborhood.
- 23:50You know, if that gift is, is accepted kindly, then what would
- 23:54would be expected right is or hoped for at the very least, is
- 23:59that a gift would would be given in return.
- 24:02Oh, thank you so much, you know, and then the next time they make
- 24:04something, maybe they come over, you know, Hey, I was getting rid
- 24:07of this. Do you need it?
- 24:08You know, I don't need it anymore.
- 24:10You, you have use for it, right. So things that maybe rather than
- 24:14just discarding them or or doing things of their own, they are
- 24:18now thinking of their neighbor, the person with whom they share
- 24:22space with. And thinking of them and then so
- 24:25on and so on, the cycle continues.
- 24:28And that is one of the key points that I want to bring up
- 24:30when it comes to. Our relationship with spirit,
- 24:35with the unseen, whatever name you want to put to them, whether
- 24:38it's VAITI or Whites, whatever, our relationship with these
- 24:45unseen forces is entirely reliant and dependent upon the
- 24:51reciprocity of the gifting cycle.
- 24:55So we must first establish. The connection we must have.
- 24:57First established our space with them.
- 24:59There's going to be a few things that I talk about here in just a
- 25:01little bit about that, about establishing space, about, you
- 25:07know, claiming space if you will.
- 25:11But then once that has happened, there is this, there's this
- 25:13ongoing need to maintain things in good standing.
- 25:20So it's not exactly the same as what I'm describing with regards
- 25:26to people, how people interact with one another because we as
- 25:29people, we are, we, we contain spirit as well.
- 25:37We are spirit, you know, we, we don't contain it.
- 25:39It is, it is who we are. I am I am Spirit traveling
- 25:44around in this mechanical meat suit.
- 25:48You know with all these things that that that make it go.
- 25:50But Spirit is what I am and who I am and Spirit is what who you
- 25:53are and the various parts of the soul of the spirit that you want
- 25:57to break down and and look at. If you're looking at it through
- 26:01a heathen lens, you know the Hummer, the huger, the humming,
- 26:04You know the older, the the the owned, you know the.
- 26:08Various parts of our self, the might, the main, everything that
- 26:11comes and goes in and through us and about us.
- 26:13What makes us? Spiritual.
- 26:15Beings we take physical form. We take a form that is
- 26:19manifested in this physical shape.
- 26:22The Veitier don't always, but they are still existing in the
- 26:26same plane of space and time as we are.
- 26:29They still are existing in spirit form in profane space.
- 26:34So they are right beside us whether we can see them or not.
- 26:36They are in they are around us whether we can see them or not.
- 26:39So our relationship with them, while not exactly the same as
- 26:42our physical neighbor, echoes very similar things.
- 26:46So to forget them or to not recognize them or to not
- 26:49acknowledge them or to disregard them through without without
- 26:53giving them gifts is a slight to them, I feel at least it is.
- 26:56It is a you know, it it it disregards their their presence
- 27:01and and our desire to want to live amicably and peacefully
- 27:04with them. So if we're not doing things to
- 27:09see to it that they are, you know, kept happy that they are
- 27:15satisfied that we are in good. Standing.
- 27:17Standing with them. Then what else is it that we are
- 27:19doing? Well, we are that, you know, we,
- 27:22we are, we are not acknowledging them.
- 27:26And could that be in its own way, a form of of sliding them?
- 27:32You know it would, it would is it almost as bad as going in and
- 27:37just dumping trash, you know, tearing up the ground, you know,
- 27:43not giving any regard, disregarding their their
- 27:45presence if we're not going to, if we're not going to
- 27:47acknowledge them through gifting.
- 27:50To me it's almost the same as. Just.
- 27:55Going in and trash in the place. So it would make them upset, it
- 28:00would, it would disrupt them, it wouldn't give them peace, it
- 28:02wouldn't give them rest. And then they would be forced
- 28:05out. So, you know, at that point,
- 28:07it's, it's one of two things, either they, they either they
- 28:10let us take over the space, which is why I'm seeing a lot of
- 28:13what's happening. And then in other times, what
- 28:15I'm seeing happening is that the spirits don't want to go there,
- 28:17that this is my place. You came in here uninvited.
- 28:20You came in here violently in some ways, and you came in here
- 28:23disrespecting my space. I'm not going to leave.
- 28:25And not only am I not going to leave, I'm going to make your
- 28:29life here a problem. I'm going to be disruptive.
- 28:33I'm going to give you shit all the time to have to deal with
- 28:38because you came in here and gave me crap now.
- 28:40Now I'm giving it right back to you.
- 28:41So there's this again, largely UPG here, but but to me this is
- 28:46a large reason why I feel a lot of times places and people and
- 28:50in places have problems where they live is because whether
- 28:57they did it themselves. Or whether the people before
- 29:00them did it. Whatever.
- 29:02The relationship wasn't established properly, you know.
- 29:09They they they didn't put the work in.
- 29:13Whether they moved in there new took over a new new new resident
- 29:17from the previous people, you know, they didn't do the
- 29:22necessary work to to establish a peaceful place.
- 29:28Now, again, when it comes to this type of thing, I think, you
- 29:33know, there's there's a good bit of information that I'm about to
- 29:35share with all of you that if you really want to go into
- 29:38studying more about this, there, there are some really key pieces
- 29:43of literature that have been recommended to me and that I in
- 29:47turn recommend to to a lot of people.
- 29:51So we're going to start with, I'm just going to put them up on
- 29:54camera here for you all to see. We're going to start with, of
- 29:57course, the LON Nama book. So I've got it here on screen,
- 30:02but it's it's the book of so LON Nama book is just the book of
- 30:07settlers. So when Iceland was settled by
- 30:10the Norwegians. This is a collection of valuable
- 30:18resources, specifically. Surrounding Icelandic folklore
- 30:26so how the Scandinavian people of of Norway carried their
- 30:29traditions from where they left when they settled Iceland a lot
- 30:35of. What what you're going to find
- 30:36and contain in this in this book or a good bit of what contained
- 30:39in this book is is is the is how land was was claimed or how land
- 30:43was, yeah, claimed. With fire and and then so forth.
- 30:52So the links for these books are going to be down in the
- 30:55description or showing us of this of this episode.
- 30:58But that's that's one book that I recommend.
- 31:01The next two books that I recommend are by the same
- 31:03author. I don't know how to pronounce
- 31:04his last name for correctly because I'm not French, but the
- 31:09author's name is Claude Leko Leko Tu Lesoto.
- 31:14I don't know, but the first book that I'm recommend by Claude is
- 31:19Demons and Spirits of the Land. Ancestral lore and Practices.
- 31:27This goes over a lot of medieval stories, you know, folk
- 31:31traditions even. Spiritual place names and.
- 31:37Various Pagan rituals of, of home building and, and and site
- 31:42selections. So beyond Germanic, there's
- 31:45there's there's, you know, Celtic English, I'm sure, but
- 31:52you know, you've got everything from, you know, universal or
- 31:57sorry, unusual manifestations to demons and fallen angels, cult
- 32:02remnants, the evidence of place names, the undersides of
- 32:06idolatry, all the way from that over to taking possession of a
- 32:11piece of land, encountering the spirits of the local land
- 32:16contract with spirits enclosed space that is sacred, the
- 32:20conquest of the space. This is a great source.
- 32:25And Claude, of course, does he is he is a a well respected
- 32:30academic. He was a professor of of
- 32:34medieval literature and civilization at the Sorbana.
- 32:42He's the author of numerous books.
- 32:44Then beyond what I'm just going to be naming here, multiple
- 32:48books on medieval and Pagan beliefs and magic, including the
- 32:50Book of Grimoires, the Tradition of Household spirits, which is
- 32:53going to be next on my list, and a Lapidary of sacred stones and
- 32:57the Secret History of poltergeist and Haunted houses.
- 33:01And at the time that this book was published, which was in
- 33:111995, he lived in Paris. I don't know if he's still alive
- 33:14or not, but yes. So, so that just goes straight
- 33:18into the next book, The Tradition of household spirits,
- 33:22ancestral lore and practices. So these two books by Claude
- 33:28Lisle 2. Lisle 2 Critical reading crucial
- 33:32reading for heathens, especially to understand the the dynamic,
- 33:38the the relationship that that we can have with the spirits
- 33:44that inhabit places, locations. You know, this book is great
- 33:49because it goes into the house, covering things like the house
- 33:53and its construction, the buildings, openings of the
- 33:55house, the house interior. I don't know if it's in this
- 33:58book or if it's in Demons and Spirits of the land that that
- 34:02talks about there being some folklore that state states that,
- 34:11you know, when it when it came to erecting a building that the
- 34:16people wouldn't even do that first without.
- 34:20They wouldn't do that without first.
- 34:21Sacrificing a living animal or a life for that because they knew.
- 34:27That to to claim that space required that a life to be to be
- 34:30sacrificed for it. So a serious business, you know,
- 34:33it, it meant something to, to, to ancient, you know, medieval
- 34:37or or later civilizations. Now, of course, we live in a
- 34:42time, you know, and we live in an era where, you know, just
- 34:46because you want to build a house doesn't mean you need to
- 34:48go out and kill a goat. Or a cow.
- 34:49Or a pig or anything like that. But these books, these three
- 34:54books here that I. That I cited for you are are not
- 34:57expensive. You know you can.
- 34:59You can save up a few pennies, you know, a few bucks here or
- 35:02there and then and and have these books in your collection,
- 35:05you know, within a month or two if you're really scrimping and
- 35:07saving. But again, the links for them
- 35:10will be you can you can buy them on Amazon.
- 35:13So I'll link them all down in the show notes for you.
- 35:15But but a lot of what these books will help with you, will
- 35:19help you with, I should say, is educating you.
- 35:25On the world view that these people had, and if you're
- 35:27adopting an old ways belief such as heathenry and you want to
- 35:38strengthen your bond or connection with the spirits of
- 35:43the land, these boys can help with it.
- 35:45Now, one thing I would definitely say just for my own
- 35:49observations. So again, this will this will go
- 35:52more onto the the UPG side of things.
- 35:57Is is that, you know, you have to realize what the spirits of
- 36:02the land are. They are not the same as people,
- 36:07obviously. They're not the same as as as as
- 36:09humans. They act on their own agency.
- 36:13They do their own thing. They can be gifted to.
- 36:21And. Relationships with between them
- 36:24and us can be amicable so far as to be able to live peacefully.
- 36:30They are also outside of what we would.
- 36:34Say the normal or that's the normal, but they would they
- 36:37would be considered outside of the inner yard social construct
- 36:42of things. So in the fact that they act on
- 36:46their own agency and, and are outside of that inner inner yard
- 36:50social construct, the gifting exchange is not it's, it's, it's
- 36:57not exactly the same as what we would see as, as like let's say
- 37:01between, you know, 2 oath sworn kins people, you know, the
- 37:10relationships of Frith that are found.
- 37:12Between. In relationships with with
- 37:14people do not exist between, you know, with, with relationships
- 37:19with. My foot itches, you can see me.
- 37:22Scooting around over. Here and trying to scratch my
- 37:24foot it doesn't exist in the same way with with the spirits
- 37:27of the land. OK, you're, yeah, sure you don't
- 37:33want to, you know, do anything to to, you know, neglect them
- 37:35or, or to, you know, purposefully piss them off, I
- 37:39guess. But you know, if if.
- 37:43If if the. Spirits of the land are upset
- 37:44and they're acting their own way.
- 37:46Especially if you're going outside.
- 37:49Outside on on a. On a hunt, let's say you know
- 37:52the the spirits that exist in in those spaces, in those
- 37:56landscapes, the the wild. If you will, they are definitely
- 38:00under no obligation, no reason to want to.
- 38:03You know, they're there like you're in my house now.
- 38:05You play by my rules. And if I don't like you, then
- 38:07then tough nuts. You know, I don't know.
- 38:09Nothing you do is going to, you know, make me like you.
- 38:14So again, from like personal experience, I understand that
- 38:21and I respect, I respect the respect the rules, you know, I
- 38:28respect, I respect the, the construct of things.
- 38:32I'll go out a lot of times when I go on like a river
- 38:36exploration, if I go out on the walk to walk in the river, if
- 38:39I'm going out and I'm walking the trails, I always take gifts
- 38:44with me. I always take things that I
- 38:46know. Can be safe and consumable
- 38:50resources for the spirits of the land and what I mean by that is
- 38:56is things that are of organic nature that are native to the
- 39:00area where I live you know what I mean so nuts and seeds and you
- 39:09know things that are non. Toxic to the birds.
- 39:13Some of the critters like the the.
- 39:16The possums and the and the raccoons and the and the
- 39:19chipmunks and the squirrels, you know, because again, I, I, I see
- 39:22them as they are squirrels. They are raccoons.
- 39:26They are. Birds, you know, they are all
- 39:27those things. I'm not trying to say that.
- 39:29Every bird I see is is some form of, you know, spirit of the
- 39:34land. I Incarnate.
- 39:36But in a way I am because I believe my personal beliefs are
- 39:42that. They're all spirit.
- 39:44We all are spirit and, and whatever vessel the spirit takes
- 39:48form of that. It is just that so.
- 39:53But yes, there are certain forces of spirit that are
- 39:57unseen, unless it manifests in such things as a storm, where
- 40:01you get to see the ferocity of the wind and the rain and the
- 40:03tornado or the OR the snow or the this or the.
- 40:05That you know another times you know the spirit of the of of the
- 40:10land that that inhabits a river. Will be will be manifested in
- 40:15the form of the Heron or the ducks or the the the other
- 40:20waterfowl that frequent the area you know, or this or the fish or
- 40:27this you know the serpents or the turtles or this or that.
- 40:30Like everything is its own spirit.
- 40:32They act in their own agency and they are independent of one
- 40:36another, but they are they are a spirit.
- 40:38They are. They are spirit within.
- 40:43So I'd bring gifts for them. You know, I carry with me these
- 40:47these again consumable safe organic resources that when left
- 40:53in the space are either. Consumed by the land, or they
- 40:57biodegrade and they they, they, they give.
- 40:59Nutrients to the land. The land which also contains
- 41:03spirit, the trees, the rocks, the earth, the roots, the
- 41:07everything. So this is my way of
- 41:11strengthening my bond or strengthening the bond that I
- 41:16have because again, my, my, my heathenry envelops and
- 41:23encapsulates a very animistic form.
- 41:27Not all heathens are like that, you know, not all heathens feel
- 41:30that that same connection. And I'm not saying that you're
- 41:33bad or or less of a person or less of a heathen for not.
- 41:37I'm just saying that, you know, for me when it comes to.
- 41:41Establishing a good and strong relationship with the land.
- 41:43If I go someplace new, you know, before I venture out into that
- 41:49space, that landscape, if I've never been there before, I know
- 41:52that I'm literally walking into somebody else.
- 41:54'S house, you know, like that's how I treat it, you know, so I
- 41:58approach it with reverence, I approach it with appreciation, I
- 42:02approach it with thanks and I approach it with love and I
- 42:06approach it with a gift and I thank.
- 42:09Them, you know, I thank them for letting me come and visit and
- 42:14thank them for letting me experience what they get to live
- 42:18with all the time. You know, so having those
- 42:22moments, having those times and showing my appreciation for them
- 42:25is is my gesture is my way of establishing a relationship and
- 42:31respecting that space while I'm there.
- 42:35You know if there's. Trash pick it up, even if you
- 42:38didn't leave it, you know, and I, I've done that and I still, I
- 42:42do that all the time, you know, every week.
- 42:46I wouldn't say every day because I'm not necessarily out on the
- 42:49trail every day, but every week, you know, again, because I live
- 42:53nearby the Stones River. Our trash pickup is in is, is
- 42:57near where the river is. There's a big dumpster back
- 43:00there. So whenever I'm taking my house.
- 43:04Trash out to that dumpster. You know, I'm, I'm scouring the
- 43:07landscape nearby the river and if I see something, I'm running
- 43:09to go get it, you know, a, a stray piece of napkin or a cup
- 43:13or, or something that doesn't belong that that's needs to be
- 43:16discarded of properly. If I see it, I go take care of
- 43:19it because this is my way of deepening my, my connection with
- 43:23the land spirits. Do I expect that, that they're
- 43:29going to do something for me in return?
- 43:32I don't really think of it that way.
- 43:34I just think of it as I am appreciative of the space that I
- 43:36live near. I'm appreciative of the
- 43:39relationship that I've had with these spirits.
- 43:42And I want to treat that space good.
- 43:45I want to treat it as if it were my own, you know, and I want to
- 43:48thank them in this, in this form of, of service of being a
- 43:53custodian of this space of this landscape.
- 43:58You know, in another way that I think is good to deepen and
- 44:05strengthen our bonds is, is not only doing things like what I'm
- 44:08talking about doing, but doing it and and being an example.
- 44:16In in in, asking others you know and and having others be an
- 44:19example. For others to do it too.
- 44:22You know, don't just watch me do these things.
- 44:25Don't just give me a thumbs up. Don't just, you know, clap from
- 44:28a distance or whatever. Go out and do it yourself.
- 44:32You know, this is this is their home too.
- 44:35But man, this is our home. This earth, this, this land, you
- 44:38know, this was this is a gift we only got.
- 44:41We only got this one, you know, treat it well, treat it good,
- 44:46love it and and it will. Love you back.
- 44:52And for the most part, like I said, there's, there's, there's
- 44:54plenty of things that, that, that exist that no matter how
- 44:58nice you are, like I can go and I can pick up all the trash in
- 45:01the river every week if I wanted to.
- 45:05And I can pick up all the, the fallen debris, you know, in the
- 45:09woods and in the trails and all that where I go.
- 45:12Is that going to prevent, you know, a storm from coming in?
- 45:15Or flooding from happening? No, because that's the spirit of
- 45:19that. You know that is the necessary
- 45:22part of nature that needs to destroy.
- 45:27In order to allow for renewal. But it might also, you know, it
- 45:36might, it might keep the storm from getting too close to my.
- 45:40House. You know what I mean?
- 45:41It might keep the storm from from.
- 45:43Destroying things that are nearest and dearest to my loved
- 45:47ones because of the of. The things that I've not, you
- 45:51know, things will happen as they happen, but but I believe that
- 45:57this is a way or these are some ways for us to deepen and
- 46:00strengthen our bonds with the Vaitir.
- 46:03Of the land. So yeah, I mean, maybe I'm,
- 46:13maybe I'm just an old superstitious, you know,
- 46:18animistic hippie, heathen guy, whatever the heck.
- 46:21I don't even know. Anymore it's it's the names
- 46:23start to mean less and less. I know what I believe, I know
- 46:28what I feel. I know that I that I see the
- 46:31world through a very. Heathen Lens.
- 46:33You know, I have, I have things that are.
- 46:35Part of my world view that are heathen and then things that are
- 46:41not or that you can't necessarily attest to strictly
- 46:44being heathen. A lot of think of what I said
- 46:47today can be, you know, encompassed in in other belief
- 46:51systems that are not dramatic heathen.
- 46:54So. There's, there's, there's plenty
- 46:57of that as well. You know there's.
- 46:59Plenty of that nuance and that and that shared syncretism that
- 47:05that exists, especially when it comes to stuff like this.
- 47:07When you talk about nature, the appreciation, the veneration,
- 47:11the respect of nature, I think that that that goes deep and
- 47:17beyond anything of an established religious or
- 47:20spirituality. You know, it's, it's, it's
- 47:23primal. You know, it goes deeper and it
- 47:28touches and it touches. Roots.
- 47:30That that that go way deeper than than things that have just
- 47:33been recently. I say recently, you know, within
- 47:38the last thousand 2000 years and that's pretty recent if you
- 47:40think about the grand scheme of things, you know, 1 or 2000
- 47:45years ain't shit really ain't you know so, but is there
- 47:53anything else that you're like I think that comes to mind?
- 47:56I don't think so. I think I think I covered it
- 48:02well enough for for just me. So so for, you know, for
- 48:06Michael, when you catch this man, leave a comment on this.
- 48:09Let me know what you thought. Let me know what you think and
- 48:11everybody else, let me know what you think too.
- 48:13Is there something that you can come up with that you know, is,
- 48:20is a wave that that you're able to deepen the bonds or deepen
- 48:24the connection with the local spirits?
- 48:27You know, should we even be doing it?
- 48:30Sometimes I think we should. You know, I mentioned before,
- 48:33you know, sometimes there are there.
- 48:34Are benevolent forces and then there are malevolent forces.
- 48:39There are forces that wish to do us.
- 48:41I'll I would not want to align with them.
- 48:44I would want to. Get rid of them.
- 48:46I would want to banish them. I want to put them far from me.
- 48:49You know some of Claude's work. Goes into those types of things,
- 48:54you know. You know, you talk about
- 48:59malevolent forces and malevolent spirits.
- 49:02You know the Drouger and the Norse.
- 49:05Stuff like those are those are people.
- 49:07Those are those are undead as a people.
- 49:09The the the the the spirits of people.
- 49:13So I don't really know if that that can be classified as a, you
- 49:20know, a land, a land spirit. But there's there's plenty of
- 49:24things in different folklore that that suggests that there
- 49:27was a belief. By the people.
- 49:28Of, of, you know, places and things, locations, you know,
- 49:37items, you know, that can be inhabited by spirits and, and do
- 49:40good or bad things with those places or those locations, those
- 49:43things. So not everything that is spirit
- 49:50should be aligned with some things.
- 49:52You just need to get far away from state, you know, keep it
- 49:56far away. And I, you know, I haven't, I
- 50:05haven't found myself in a position to want to undo
- 50:08anything of that nature. I haven't found myself in a
- 50:10position to try and be like, oh, I can try.
- 50:12To make it better or I want to have a relationship with this
- 50:15now if it's if it's. If it's a baleful white, then no
- 50:22thanks. You know now if the baleful
- 50:26white has taken possession or ownership.
- 50:28Of of a location that is now mine.
- 50:30You know, if I happened upon a place that is, that is the
- 50:35residence of a malevolent spirit.
- 50:41Then then, yes, I would, I would wish to banish that spirit and
- 50:44tell it to go away. And there are again, there,
- 50:46there are ways of of doing that. There are ways of claiming space
- 50:50and driving that, that force away.
- 50:52And it's it's not always A1 and done sort of thing.
- 50:55You know, you can't, you know, you can't expect to just go in,
- 50:58say, hey, spirit, you know, it's my place now get out of here.
- 51:01Shoot, beat it. And then you know, no, like
- 51:05these are these are these are powerful spiritual beings and
- 51:07entities that are not going to just relinquish ownership or
- 51:10relinquish their control. Is because you whoever.
- 51:14You are, you know, walk in with a.
- 51:16With a little bit of. Fire and some sage or something
- 51:19like that. You know what I mean?
- 51:19Like there's, there's some, there's some sometimes when,
- 51:25when real strong medicine needs to come into the mix.
- 51:29Real strong, you know, magic needs to be worked to cleanse
- 51:33the space. So be mindful of that.
- 51:38And you know, that's the other thing that, you know, I haven't
- 51:41had any great experience with things like that.
- 51:45So I don't want to, I don't want to speak too much of my own EPG
- 51:49on it because I haven't had any experiences that I can reflect
- 51:54upon that would say, you know, it's, it's anything along those
- 52:01lines. But if I do, I might come back
- 52:05and do another. Episode about it or maybe you
- 52:08have had an an experience that you'd like to come and talk to
- 52:12me about on a future episode. I'd love to have you.
