- 0:00What's up everybody? Charlie Marlow here talking some
- 0:02Cardinals baseball. Very interesting tweet or
- 0:06interesting poll I should say, from the great Bill James
- 0:10yesterday. I'm going to put this poll up in
- 0:13a second. If you don't know Bill James,
- 0:15he's essentially the father of baseball analytics.
- 0:19I remember reading Bill James, what's it called, Historical
- 0:23baseball abstract Years ago, I think, I think 20 years ago
- 0:27where he first started or he he started to write about the win
- 0:30shares stat and win shares has now evolved where everybody
- 0:35talks about war wins above replacement.
- 0:37So Long story short, Bill James is kind of the guy when it comes
- 0:41to baseball analytics. He basically started that and I
- 0:45have to say I'm happy. Bill James actually follows me
- 0:49on X and I follow him and I saw this, I saw this poll and it was
- 0:54super interesting for two different reasons.
- 0:58The question is very, very intriguing.
- 1:01And then the results so far, you can't beat it.
- 1:05So here's the question and I'll put up the I'll put up the tweet
- 1:09here or the X. What do you call the post?
- 1:11OK, Bill James online, he writes the Saint Louis Cardinals have
- 1:15had winning seasons in 15 of the last 16 seasons.
- 1:21Was 2023 A one off or the end of the end of the previous era in
- 1:29their history? I don't know if that was a typo.
- 1:31So essentially was 2023 or one off or is it the end of the
- 1:37previous era in their history? What do you guys think about
- 1:40that? And so by the way, this poll
- 1:43still has another about 8 hours, 9 hours to go before the final
- 1:47results. But when I clipped this off,
- 1:50there was 2346 votes and it was exactly 5050.
- 1:56Exactly 5050. How about that?
- 1:59That it was just a bad year or the end of what they were
- 2:04exactly 5050. I'm also wondering what the
- 2:08results would be of that poll if it was just Saint Louis
- 2:11Cardinals fans. Now I did retweet this and I
- 2:14think a lot of other people did too, but you got to think Bill
- 2:17James has a National Baseball audience and I would think the
- 2:20results would be a little different there versus a
- 2:23Cardinals audience. And then on XI think Cardinal
- 2:26fans are pretty negative right now overall.
- 2:29And I'm saying, hey, you're allowed to be.
- 2:31But I just thought the fact that the questions very interesting.
- 2:34The results so far are 5050 and I did vote in this and I think
- 2:40it was just a bad year. I think the Cardinals ever since
- 2:43I've been here, I got here in 2008.
- 2:46Even the years they didn't make the play offs, they were always
- 2:49above 500. So last year was the first year
- 2:53since I've been here at the Cardinals were below 500 and it
- 2:56got real bad. Let's be real 71 and 91.
- 2:58It got real real bad. They sold off at the trade
- 3:02deadline. They had a 4A roster in a in a
- 3:05lot of cases at the end, which is fine.
- 3:08Once. Once you once, you aren't trying
- 3:10to win, just tank. I know it didn't work out with
- 3:12the draft pick but their strategy was was right.
- 3:14In my opinion, once you're bad, just be really bad.
- 3:16Don't half ass it. So this brings me into another
- 3:21another question and by the way comment, like subscribe, share
- 3:24the show, share the channel, share the videos, see my
- 3:29sponsors right there, brought to you by Triad Bank, corner
- 3:31butchers in Fenton and Saint Louis Lawn Care and also Saint
- 3:35Louis equipment. My guy Tim Jenkerson.
- 3:37So how would you, how would you vote in that poll?
- 3:40Is it just a bad year or the end of what they were?
- 3:44And then here's the other part of this.
- 3:46So I want to credit everybody who's who's giving me some of
- 3:49this, some of these ideas here because as I'm, I'm scrolling X
- 3:53yesterday I also saw a tweet from Benjamin Hockman.
- 3:57And so this was a column from his from his post dispatch, you
- 4:01know newspaper obviously, which I didn't read the column, Full
- 4:03disclosure, but I thought his tweet was really interesting
- 4:08also and it kind of spins into what I just what I just put up
- 4:11there with Bill James. So here's the tweet from
- 4:13Benjamin Hockman, columnist, Saint Louis Post Dispatch.
- 4:16I hope the Cardinals understand that the problem wasn't just one
- 4:19year. Yes, of course, last year was a
- 4:2171 and 91 disaster. But it's been most of the past
- 4:24nine years. 5 total playoff wins.
- 4:27Games, not series, that is, and four years they didn't even make
- 4:32the playoffs to begin with. As I've shouted from these pages
- 4:34before, as have other writers on our staff, the esteemed
- 4:38Cardinals are no longer on the forefront.
- 4:41They can still put together winning seasons, sure, but the
- 4:43word winning and quotes has changed its meaning around here.
- 4:47A winning Cardinals team used to make it to at least the National
- 4:50League Championship Series. Now a winning team is one that
- 4:53snatches one of the six playoff spots regardless of post season
- 4:57results. What do you think about that?
- 4:59I agree with Benjamin Hockman. I agree with what Hockman said
- 5:04right there. I do think since I moved here
- 5:07and I can't really speak to pre 2008, I mean I've read about it.
- 5:11I remember the teams, watched the teams talk to people who
- 5:13cover the teams. I wasn't here for the vibes and
- 5:16all that of 2004 and 2006. I did cover the 2006 World
- 5:20Series a little bit because I was in Michigan at the time.
- 5:23So I'm covering it from the Detroit Tigers standpoint, but I
- 5:26can't speak to the vibes pre 2008.
- 5:29I will say this, I agree with Benjamin Hochman that the
- 5:33definition of winning, it seems like it has changed for the
- 5:36Saint Louis Cardinals front office.
- 5:39I don't think it's changed for the fan base, and I think that's
- 5:42why the fans have been pissed off recently.
- 5:45It wasn't just last year, it was before that, when it seemed like
- 5:49the Cardinals were OK and settling for, hey, as long as we
- 5:52get 3 million fans, we're pushing to make the playoffs,
- 5:56we're pushing 90 wins, maybe we win the Central, maybe we get a
- 5:59wild card. We'll see what happens.
- 6:00We'll roll the dice. First round, playoff exit, OK,
- 6:03that's a winning season. I do think it's fair to say that
- 6:06the definition of winning from the Cardinals front office has
- 6:10changed because when I got here 09, they're hot.
- 6:15You run into Mannywood, what'd they call it?
- 6:19Mannywood with the with the Dodgers?
- 6:22The drop fly ball, of course, with Matt Holiday.
- 6:25OK, go to 2011 though 2011 starts the real fantastic run
- 6:29for the Saint Louis Cardinals where it was World Series NLCS
- 6:34making it to the World Series NLCS.
- 6:36Even 2015, the last year of that great run was 100 wins.
- 6:40You ran into a Cubs team that was.
- 6:41Look at that time the the Cardinals are going like this,
- 6:45right? And the Cubs are going like
- 6:47this. The hundred win, Cardinals like
- 6:49this. The Cubs like this and boom,
- 6:52Cubs win that series. Next year Cubs win the World
- 6:55Series. But what do you what do you
- 6:57think about everything I said and what do you think about the
- 6:59bill James Pole. What do you think about Benjamin
- 7:01Hockman's tweet? The pole's great, and I think
- 7:05Ben's comments sum up how I feel also about the Cardinals.
- 7:09And I think a lot of people in the fan base also feel about
- 7:13this team because they were ticked off even before last year
- 7:18about a let's push, let's not just settle to win what is often
- 7:24one of the worst divisions in baseball.
- 7:25Let's go higher, let's try to be elite.
- 7:27On paper, of course, anything can happen when you get into the
- 7:31play offs, anything can happen. We all know that.
- 7:33I think sometimes, I think sometimes the Cardinals, you
- 7:36know, they benefited from those great runs in 2006 and 2011
- 7:41where they were not the favorite, but they got healthy,
- 7:44they got right. Couple things went their way.
- 7:46They played their best baseball at the end.
- 7:48They won World Series. Those years to me are are more
- 7:52of the outliers when I, when I look at baseball, yeah, can a
- 7:56team like the Diamondbacks get hot at the end, get in, make it
- 7:59to the World Series? Sure.
- 8:00Look at the Rangers. The Rangers, the team that beat
- 8:03them. Rangers spent a lot of money.
- 8:05Then they added, also at the deadline, Jordan Montgomery even
- 8:10moves like Chris Stratton, you know, a a solid reliever from
- 8:13the Cardinals. But you know, they spent tons of
- 8:16money on Marcus Simeon, on on Corey Seeger, so on and so
- 8:20forth. Jacob the ground.
- 8:21We didn't even freaking pitch for the team.
- 8:24So look, there's a lot of ways to skin a cat.
- 8:27The Cardinals, we know they're not a big market team.
- 8:31They're spending about the same amount the last several years,
- 8:33whatever the number is, you know, 1617180 with the with the
- 8:3740, man, it gets close to 200. There's all different ways to
- 8:41kind of look at that at the different websites.
- 8:43But I think it's fair to say even when the Cardinals say
- 8:46we've increased spending, it's barely.
- 8:49It's barely. I did this yesterday on the
- 8:50radio. I went and looked back and the
- 8:53projected payroll for 24, and in the last several years it's
- 8:56pretty much the same. It's pretty much the same if you
- 8:59look at it, whatever that number is.
- 9:01And again you can, you can make it look different based on the
- 9:0326 man roster and the 40 man roster and what the roster
- 9:08projection would be at the end of the year.
- 9:10Clearly it's different last year because the Cardinals traded off
- 9:13assets that were making money like Jack Flaherty, Jordan
- 9:15Montgomery. But I think it's fair to say the
- 9:17Cardinals have pretty much spent about the same amount of money
- 9:20in the last 3-4 years or so, and if there's been an uptick, it's
- 9:24been barely. And if that's the case, I I
- 9:28don't even mention it. I I wouldn't say we're going to
- 9:30spend more if all of a sudden they spend 2% more, because
- 9:32that's not enough to even mention the Cardinal fans are
- 9:35going to be ticked about that. But it seems like it's not just
- 9:38seems it's true. Baseball has spent way more.
- 9:41All these other teams are spending way more.
- 9:43And the Cardinals are standing pat in terms of their payroll,
- 9:47which is why if they used to be more kind of top third, ish in
- 9:50payroll, if they were let's say 9th, 10th, 11th, whatever it
- 9:53was, which I think is fair. But then you saw last year they
- 9:56fell right to the middle. They were right in the middle
- 9:58there right about 1516 in payroll as they've kind of spent
- 10:02the same amount of money. But other teams are spending
- 10:03more and more and more and we know, look, that doesn't mean
- 10:06you're going to win. You saw the Mets.
- 10:07You saw the Padres. That doesn't mean you're going
- 10:09to win. Yankees didn't have a great
- 10:11season last year. But I I think we can all look at
- 10:15the Cardinals and say every once in a while, just a little
- 10:18uptick. Just kind of go for it a little
- 10:20bit. Just go for it a little bit and
- 10:22see what happens. And put yourself on paper in a
- 10:25better position to win a playoff series and make a deep run.
- 10:28We all know it's not going to happen every year.
- 10:30But on paper, Cardinal fans are smart.
- 10:33Even when they lined up a couple years ago against the Phillies,
- 10:36nobody liked that match up on paper.
- 10:37Why is that? Because it was Zach Wheeler and
- 10:40Aaron Nola versus Jose Quintana and Miles Michaels.
- 10:45No disrespect to Quintana and Michaels, really solid,
- 10:48dependable pitchers, but they're not the guys like a Wheeler and
- 10:51a Nola who can just straight up shove and all of a sudden
- 10:53they're going to go 6-7 innings, strike out nine to 11 guys on
- 10:57paper. On paper, Cardinal fans would
- 11:01like to see the team going into a playoff series and say, all
- 11:04right, I feel, I feel good about the prospects of this team.
- 11:07I think it's fair to say that in the last several years
- 11:09everybody's like, all right, pretty good, 90 wins, one a week
- 11:14Central. We'll see what happens.
- 11:17We'll get in there. I've got a lot of comments here
- 11:19on YouTube also and on X about A, it's not just last year and
- 11:24that's what Ben Hockman talked about.
- 11:26They're like, you know go back to the previous couple years, OK
- 11:30and and give the Cardinals credit.
- 11:31But Albert Pujols went buck wild the year, the year of of what of
- 11:36obviously 2022 and just carried the team.
- 11:39Now give the Cardinals all the respect in the world for
- 11:41bringing Albert back and Albert for doing that.
- 11:44But also you're talking about a team that was was around 500 and
- 11:48again they're adding, they're adding of course Montgomery and
- 11:53Kitana that year to get them over the top the previous year.
- 11:56That's a 17 game-winning streak. Again, that's a team that around
- 12:00500 or so. But give them credit.
- 12:02They do add Jon Lester, they do add Jay 1/2.
- 12:05Nobody was super excited about that.
- 12:08Nobody really thought they were elite.
- 12:09But they made a nice run. Seventeen wins, whatever it was
- 12:13and you run into the the Dodgers and the one game playoff.
- 12:16But but again on paper, nobody thought the Cardinals were going
- 12:18to make that deep run. So I've talked long enough, I
- 12:22think, what do you guys think about the the two things I
- 12:25showed you the poll Is this just a bad year or the end of what
- 12:31they were? And I guess definitions matter
- 12:33because to me it was just a bad year.
- 12:35But that being said, it wouldn't surprise me if the Cardinals
- 12:39this year are just a little bit above 500.
- 12:43You know, I I think the Cardinals, I don't know if I'm
- 12:45ready to, even if I'm ready to say what I think the Cardinals
- 12:49record wise is going to be. I think you have to see what the
- 12:51division ends up doing. And also this balance schedule.
- 12:55I was looking at the schedule the other day because a buddy of
- 12:58mine just got a job as the assistant hitting coach with the
- 13:00Cleveland Guardians. So I wanted to see when the
- 13:04Cardinals were playing the Guardians, they are playing them
- 13:06at at home at Busch Stadium in September.
- 13:09But I started to look through the schedule.
- 13:11It is a it's a whole different ball game now than back in the
- 13:13day when you're playing the what do they play central teams 19
- 13:16times. So I want to look at the
- 13:17schedule. I want to see what the other
- 13:18central teams do. I don't think the Cardinals are
- 13:21going to be bad. I do think they're going to be
- 13:23above 500. I don't know yet if I'm ready to
- 13:26put a win total out there. A lot of this also has to do
- 13:28with if they add at the trade deadline.
- 13:30But I think, I think again even the definition of of of what the
- 13:35Cardinals are, bad year, Goodyear, couple, couple winters
- 13:40ago, last winter, we're saying we want more and now I'm saying
- 13:42OK, the Cardinals might just be a 500 little bit above team.
- 13:46I don't know, we'll see. Like I said, what do you guys
- 13:48think win total right now if you had to, if you had to put it on
- 13:52right now, I mean 85, are you pushing 90 yet?
- 13:57Look, we have still two months, we have two, 2 1/2 months to
- 14:01talk about all this. So once we get closer to the
- 14:03season, we can do our projected wind totals and all that.
- 14:06But I do think the expectations have dropped for the Cardinals.
- 14:10So let me know. Bill James Paul and Ben
- 14:12Hockman's tweet Agree. Disagree.
- 14:15How would you vote? Thank y'all, Thank y'all.
- 14:19Did you enjoy the winter warm up videos I put up?
- 14:23They're actually audio. Jeff Jones got me those.
- 14:26Thank you, Jeff. You guys weren't really watching
- 14:28those very much. I'm not going to lie.
- 14:29Not a lot of views. I don't know if you just aren't
- 14:31into it for what's going on. I think I have one more Daniel
- 14:34Discalzo. I'll post, but yeah, hit me up.
- 14:37Comment like subscribe. Thanks for watching guys.
