- 0:00Speaker 1: We know that there was a shocking incident late last
- 0:02Speaker 1: week which has left a senior volunteers shaken after three
- 0:05Speaker 1: teenagers stormed the Red Cross and well threatened her and
- 0:10Speaker 1: two other volunteers with a stick. I believe that a
- 0:13Speaker 1: knife was also involved. Now joining me on the phone
- 0:16Speaker 1: line is the daughter of that volunteer, Joe. Good morning
- 0:20Speaker 1: to you. Joe.
- 0:22Speaker 2: Hi Katie, Hey, you going.
- 0:23Speaker 1: Not too bad? Thanks so much for your time this morning. Joe.
- 0:27Speaker 1: How's your mum?
- 0:29Speaker 2: She's doing really well? Yeah, said a few days to
- 0:32Speaker 2: let it all think in now, And no, she's doing
- 0:36Speaker 2: as well as could be expected, like in the circumstances.
- 0:40Speaker 2: But I will say her are the two colleagues that
- 0:42Speaker 2: were involved aren't doing it as well? I mean, my
- 0:45Speaker 2: mum is the kind of person that stands fast in
- 0:49Speaker 2: the face of adversity. She's a bit of a fighter
- 0:52Speaker 2: in those responses. But the other tea ladies, Yeah, they're
- 0:55Speaker 2: sort of finding it a bit hard to deal with
- 0:58Speaker 2: moving forward. So yeah, I hopeful they're going to be
- 1:00Speaker 2: getting the support they need and yeah, and feel better
- 1:03Speaker 2: about things soon.
- 1:04Speaker 1: Jo, Your mum's seventy nine, isn't she correct? Yep, she is,
- 1:09Speaker 1: And the other volunteers senior territorians as well.
- 1:14Speaker 2: Yeah, they're senior territorians, you know, volunteering for a charitable organization,
- 1:19Speaker 2: doing the right thing for their community. It's a beautiful
- 1:21Speaker 2: little opshop there, and yeah, and they're just you know,
- 1:25Speaker 2: they're just lovely people going about their day, you know,
- 1:28Speaker 2: doing the right thing for the community. And yeah, and
- 1:31Speaker 2: of course no one should ever go to work, you know,
- 1:34Speaker 2: whether it's voluntary or paid, and have an incident like
- 1:37Speaker 2: this happened. But just the fact that it is elderly
- 1:40Speaker 2: citizens volunteering and in a charitable organization just makes just
- 1:45Speaker 2: a little I mean it's already you know, just skule.
- 1:48Speaker 1: Behavior, but that just it makes you blood boiled.
- 1:52Speaker 2: Absolutely, just it does. It's infuriating. And that was my
- 1:55Speaker 2: first response as well, you know, like being told about
- 1:57Speaker 2: it when mum rang told me, I was just curious, God,
- 2:00Speaker 2: how dare they exactly?
- 2:02Speaker 1: How dare they?
- 2:04Speaker 2: Now?
- 2:04Speaker 1: What did your mom tell you? Talk us through her
- 2:07Speaker 1: recollection of the events, and and you know, she's more
- 2:10Speaker 1: than happy for you to be a spokesperson for her,
- 2:12Speaker 1: I know, So tell me exactly what she's told you.
- 2:16Speaker 2: All right, So basically she's she told me that they were.
- 2:21Speaker 2: These students came in. There was about five of them,
- 2:23Speaker 2: and they came into the shop. They you know, the
- 2:27Speaker 2: air in the shop changed immediately because you could tell
- 2:29Speaker 2: that they were sort of in there up to no good.
- 2:32Speaker 2: Had you know, mum and her colleagues on edge already
- 2:35Speaker 2: and they're sort of like going, oh, what's going on here?
- 2:37Speaker 2: You know. So they came in and basically case to
- 2:40Speaker 2: joint and then went out I don't know how long for,
- 2:43Speaker 2: but then came back in with a large stick. The
- 2:48Speaker 2: student that was threatening my mum with a large stick
- 2:51Speaker 2: obviously knew it was her car because he went to
- 2:53Speaker 2: her asking for the keys. So they must have been
- 2:55Speaker 2: watching a post for some time, which, you know, given
- 2:58Speaker 2: the fact that it is premeditated, they know that they're
- 3:00Speaker 2: elderly people and doubtless empoweredly was I'm concerned however, Yeah,
- 3:07Speaker 2: So basically the intimidation tactics started straight away. He was
- 3:11Speaker 2: brandishing this sick. Thankfully he didn't hit her or the
- 3:16Speaker 2: other you know, no one was harmed, but you know,
- 3:18Speaker 2: they were banging things around demanding the keys, and Mum
- 3:22Speaker 2: was like, no, it's nope, not giving you the keys
- 3:24Speaker 2: because my mom was a fighter, like was not bugger. Yeah,
- 3:28Speaker 2: I'm not giving it to you and the other ladies
- 3:30Speaker 2: that are froze. They were absolutely terrified and yeah, basically
- 3:36Speaker 2: he wrestled the bag off her and ran out. But
- 3:39Speaker 2: the positives of this is that there was a gentleman
- 3:43Speaker 2: from Star Trek that was doing deliveries at the time
- 3:48Speaker 2: and chased after these people. And because they were telling
- 3:52Speaker 2: everything out of the bag they were they just wanted
- 3:54Speaker 2: the car keys. It was a joy rise that they
- 3:56Speaker 2: had in their minds. So through the phone out through
- 3:58Speaker 2: the walllet out, dump the bag and he went running
- 4:01Speaker 2: after them and collected everything and took it back there,
- 4:03Speaker 2: and he was a mum just wanted to do a
- 4:05Speaker 2: shout out. I'm not sure if his name, but whoever
- 4:08Speaker 2: was there on Thursday afternoon last week. Yeah, it was
- 4:12Speaker 2: sort of a comforting thing that he was there to
- 4:14Speaker 2: kind of help out that what a legend just after them.
- 4:17Speaker 1: Yeah, what a legend. If he's listening this morning, if
- 4:20Speaker 1: you are that driver from Star Trek and you want
- 4:22Speaker 1: to give us a call eight nine four one one
- 4:25Speaker 1: four nine, give us a call, and what a good bloke.
- 4:29Speaker 1: And you know that's always the great thing, isn't it, Joe,
- 4:31Speaker 1: that in these terrible situations you actually see that true
- 4:35Speaker 1: territory spirit and the really wonderful people come out and
- 4:39Speaker 1: help out when you need it.
- 4:41Speaker 2: Yep. And you definitely do need to be grateful. And
- 4:43Speaker 2: the first responders, the police were brilliant. They responded very
- 4:47Speaker 2: quickly to this situation. Also, as we know from the
- 4:51Speaker 2: news reports, you know, the car chase through the suburbs
- 4:55Speaker 2: and everything, which you know, another effect of like a
- 4:59Speaker 2: crime if not only was it violence and everything towards
- 5:03Speaker 2: the you know, the people like my mum and her colleagues,
- 5:06Speaker 2: but then to get in the car and drive around
- 5:07Speaker 2: the way they were. I mean, you've seen the footage
- 5:10Speaker 2: that could have been. There could have been you know,
- 5:13Speaker 2: horrible consequences to that as well, and thankfully there wasn't.
- 5:16Speaker 2: But yeah, the police were brilliant and apparently draped the dog,
- 5:21Speaker 2: the police dog veiled these guys up after the crash
- 5:24Speaker 2: and molden and everything. So just a big thank you
- 5:26Speaker 2: to everybody that you know, made sure that it didn't
- 5:30Speaker 2: turn out worse than what it could have been.
- 5:32Speaker 1: Your spot on and you know, well done to the
- 5:34Speaker 1: police and everybody that helped out all of those first responders. Joe,
- 5:38Speaker 1: can I ask you, is your mum's car a ride off?
- 5:41Speaker 2: How is it definitely is a ride Yeah, I was.
- 5:43Speaker 2: I was told that once the air bag is deployed,
- 5:47Speaker 2: it's yeah, it's no longer fixable. So a few other
- 5:50Speaker 2: things that happened to it. It was a very old car. Yeah,
- 5:53Speaker 2: it was sentimental in our family. It took her grandkids,
- 5:56Speaker 2: my kids for school and back and everything like that.
- 5:58Speaker 2: And we were watching the footage going, well, God, there's
- 6:00Speaker 2: nanny's little car. Yeah. So yeah, but now to answer
- 6:04Speaker 2: the question, yes it is a rite.
- 6:05Speaker 1: Off, what's it going to mean to your mum in
- 6:08Speaker 1: terms of her independence and not having that vehicle? I
- 6:12Speaker 1: would imagine it has a big impact.
- 6:14Speaker 2: It does have a big impact on her independence, you know.
- 6:17Speaker 2: So yeah, so I'm going to be moving forward. I'm
- 6:20Speaker 2: just going to be contacting victims of crime and seeing
- 6:23Speaker 2: what I can do, you know, just to try and
- 6:26Speaker 2: get her independence back.
- 6:27Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 6:28Speaker 2: It's you know, taken in such a such an awful way,
- 6:32Speaker 2: and I just want to make sure that you know,
- 6:33Speaker 2: there's a silver lining to all of this, because she
- 6:35Speaker 2: doesn't deserve it. Nobody deserves to be a victim of
- 6:38Speaker 2: crime at all, and just want to make sure that, yeah,
- 6:41Speaker 2: that she's compensated copy for it.
- 6:43Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, absolutely spot on. She does not deserve that. Look,
- 6:48Speaker 1: you know, just a little change of hopefully a nice
- 6:53Speaker 1: change for her. I'd like to make her a territory
- 6:55Speaker 1: and of the week for this week. I know it's
- 6:57Speaker 1: very early days, love that it's only Monday, but I
- 7:02Speaker 1: love that she stood her ground. I love that she
- 7:05Speaker 1: you know that she said no, you're not taking my stuff,
- 7:08Speaker 1: and she did her best to keep an eye out
- 7:10Speaker 1: for the other two volunteers as well. So look, I'd
- 7:14Speaker 1: like to make her our territory and of the week,
- 7:15Speaker 1: which means that she does get a voucher for Malone's
- 7:19Speaker 1: butchery out there at Gateway. I hope that that gives
- 7:21Speaker 1: her a bit of a change of her luck. And
- 7:25Speaker 1: you know, I just think it's terrible what's happened to
- 7:28Speaker 1: your mum. I think it's mortifying that she had to
- 7:31Speaker 1: go through that. And Joe, my understanding is that you
- 7:34Speaker 1: know that those young people that two of them had
- 7:36Speaker 1: ankle bracelets on as well. Is that correct?
- 7:38Speaker 2: Correct? Yeah, they did, and clearly it's not a deterrent,
- 7:42Speaker 2: but that. Yeah, no, they did have ankle bracelets on.
- 7:45Speaker 2: That was one of the first things they noticed when
- 7:47Speaker 2: they came into the shop and that have went what's
- 7:49Speaker 2: going on here? So yeah, clearly, clearly it's not a
- 7:52Speaker 2: deterrent to you know, to stop them from from these
- 7:56Speaker 2: these acts in the community, which you know has everybody
- 7:59Speaker 2: on edge, you know, so safety is concerned. But listen,
- 8:02Speaker 2: thank you so much. She's going to be so happy
- 8:04Speaker 2: to get that now, going.
- 8:07Speaker 1: Yeah, well, you know, I like, I just really feel
- 8:10Speaker 1: for your mum and the two women that were there,
- 8:13Speaker 1: because I think when you get into your senior years,
- 8:15Speaker 1: you should be able to go and volunteer at the
- 8:17Speaker 1: Red Cross and not have to worry about something like
- 8:20Speaker 1: this happening and say right, yeah, right, And I.
- 8:24Speaker 2: Feel for moving about in the community without having fear
- 8:27Speaker 2: of you know, I know that one of them may
- 8:29Speaker 2: not be going back at all, so that's an end
- 8:30Speaker 2: of a ten year voluntary service. So yeah, just the
- 8:35Speaker 2: impact that these sorts of crimes have is yeah, it's
- 8:39Speaker 2: a ripple effect that you know, clearly these young people
- 8:43Speaker 2: don't have any thought of of course they don't because
- 8:45Speaker 2: they just do acting in the moment and doing what
- 8:48Speaker 2: they're doing, but they just don't realize the impact that
- 8:51Speaker 2: it has not just on the victims, that their families
- 8:54Speaker 2: and yeah, their life moving forward. So but just want
- 8:57Speaker 2: to make sure that you know everybody involved is after
- 9:00Speaker 2: and yeah, we'll get everyone around for a barbecue with
- 9:02Speaker 2: the Mulane voucher.
- 9:04Speaker 1: Oh much that your a legend. No worries at all.
- 9:07Speaker 1: Let us know how it goes the barbecue, and please
- 9:10Speaker 1: don't keep me in contact as well in terms of
- 9:14Speaker 1: you know what you hear with the you know, with
- 9:17Speaker 1: the ramifications of the actions of these young people and
- 9:20Speaker 1: and you know whether whether they do sort of get
- 9:24Speaker 1: in trouble or whether there is a consequence for their action,
- 9:27Speaker 1: because there needs to be. And I just think that
- 9:30Speaker 1: we have to people have to have young people have
- 9:33Speaker 1: to have more respect for those in the community that
- 9:37Speaker 1: are a little bit older that are out there doing
- 9:39Speaker 1: the right thing. You know, your mum's out there volunteering
- 9:41Speaker 1: for the community for goodness sake, and the other two
- 9:45Speaker 1: women they shouldn't have to worry about this.
- 9:48Speaker 2: No, not at all. And and I'm in complete agreeance
- 9:50Speaker 2: with you. There does need to be consequences for that,
- 9:54Speaker 2: and it is a violent crime. You can't. You can't
- 9:57Speaker 2: pretty this number is definitely a violent crime that's happened.
- 10:00Speaker 2: And yes, I'll definitely keep you in the league with
- 10:03Speaker 2: what's going on and it will be watching that closely
- 10:05Speaker 2: over the next couple of weeks of course. Yeah, I'll
- 10:08Speaker 2: get back in contact and let you know what to do.
- 10:10Speaker 1: Please do And Joe, can you just clarify for us
- 10:13Speaker 1: as well. So there was a big stick? Was there
- 10:15Speaker 1: also a knife in that incident.
- 10:18Speaker 2: What happened was one of the other young people grabbed
- 10:21Speaker 2: a knife out of the cutlery area in the back room.
- 10:23Speaker 2: There's a back room there that has you know, cups
- 10:26Speaker 2: and plates and things like that, and he's just on
- 10:28Speaker 2: a whim, grabbed a knife and was holding it. He
- 10:32Speaker 2: wasn't holding it to the person's death or anything like that,
- 10:38Speaker 2: but he had it in his hand. That's enough of
- 10:40Speaker 2: a threat, you know, that's intention. So yeah, that's definitely
- 10:43Speaker 2: it was. It definitely happened. But the person that my
- 10:47Speaker 2: mum was fighting with, so to speak, had the stick.
- 10:52Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 10:52Speaker 2: Just thank god that no one was touched or harmed.
- 10:55Speaker 1: Yeah, thank goodness for that. Thank god that all three
- 10:58Speaker 1: of those women are okay. Joe pass on our love
- 11:02Speaker 1: to your mum and to the other two women that
- 11:04Speaker 1: were with her, and I hope that I hope they
- 11:07Speaker 1: have a nice barbecue with that shar with that boucher.
- 11:10Speaker 1: But please keep in contact with us and let us
- 11:12Speaker 1: know how things are tracking along as well.
- 11:15Speaker 2: I will do. Katie, you have a great day.
- 11:17Speaker 1: Thank you too, Thanks so much for your time this morning.
