Transcript
- 0:03Speaker 1: Hey guys, and welcome to Normally. This is the show
- 0:07Speaker 1: with normalist takes for when the news gets weird.
- 0:10Speaker 2: I am Mary Catherine.
- 0:11Speaker 3: Hamp and I am Carol Markowitz.
- 0:13Speaker 4: And the news is actually extra weird right now, extra
- 0:18Speaker 4: super weird. And this NBC is like reacting so well
- 0:22Speaker 4: to the chrump when they're doing just great.
- 0:25Speaker 2: What do you think?
- 0:26Speaker 1: I mean, their ratings were really good, partly because I
- 0:29Speaker 1: think a lot of people tuned in.
- 0:30Speaker 2: To watched the reaction, more.
- 0:34Speaker 1: People than usual, and I think both in media circles
- 0:39Speaker 1: and in liberal activist circles. But I sort of repeat myself.
- 0:43Speaker 1: You know they're processing and it's going to take a minute.
- 0:47Speaker 1: There's I think I want to kick us off with
- 0:50Speaker 1: one clip of a sort of liberal activist woman on
- 0:54Speaker 1: TikTok who sort of embodies some of the reactions in
- 1:00Speaker 1: that world online things you may be seeing on your
- 1:03Speaker 1: Facebook page. Let's hear a little bit from her.
- 1:06Speaker 5: I took the morning Degree. That's all the time we have.
- 1:08Speaker 5: Now is your time to start making a plan. Women,
- 1:10Speaker 5: I'm here to talk to you today. The first thing
- 1:12Speaker 5: you're going to do is you're going to delete your
- 1:14Speaker 5: period tracking app. I don't care what state you're in.
- 1:16Speaker 5: Go into your history, take out a paper planner, write
- 1:19Speaker 5: down your history so that you have it, because I
- 1:21Speaker 5: know that you it. You use it to track population
- 1:23Speaker 5: and all of that stuff. You can't do that in
- 1:25Speaker 5: an app anymore. Before you delete the app, you're going
- 1:27Speaker 5: to delete your data out of the app. That's not
- 1:30Speaker 5: a sure way to make sure that they can't use
- 1:32Speaker 5: it against you later, but it helps. Next thing you're
- 1:35Speaker 5: going to do, you're going to get Planned B or
- 1:37Speaker 5: it's prescription equivalent. If you are comfortable getting the prescription,
- 1:41Speaker 5: you can go to your doctor, and sometimes you can
- 1:43Speaker 5: get it for free. That version I think is called ELLA.
- 1:45Speaker 5: And then if you are not comfortable or unable to
- 1:48Speaker 5: do that with your doctor, go get Plan B in
- 1:51Speaker 5: cash at your local pharmacy. I don't care if you
- 1:53Speaker 5: don't need it right now, just keep it on your shelf.
- 1:55Speaker 1: I picked her because she's hitting all the marks of
- 1:59Speaker 1: the hysteria without actually yelling, which for an audio podcast
- 2:03Speaker 1: I just didn't want to do to you guys.
- 2:06Speaker 3: We'll have plenty of that later.
- 2:07Speaker 1: By the way, I love the idea that the government,
- 2:10Speaker 1: which like can't do rural broadband, is going to also
- 2:15Speaker 1: track my period like I have tracked my peerents as
- 2:17Speaker 1: I was fortunate, Like I haven't figured it out yet.
- 2:19Speaker 3: Right there were the app I was like, what are
- 2:21Speaker 3: these kids doing? Amazing?
- 2:23Speaker 4: And you know, we have lost elections before we I
- 2:27Speaker 4: you know, my first election that I voted was nineteen
- 2:30Speaker 4: ninety six. I've lost basically all, you know, but a
- 2:34Speaker 4: few in there. I was never like, grab all the
- 2:37Speaker 4: algebra books. They're taking away algebra from eighth graders, like,
- 2:40Speaker 4: because that's the equivalent here, that's the thinking process here.
- 2:45Speaker 3: It is somebody damaged this person, Somebody.
- 2:48Speaker 2: Made her afraid of things.
- 2:50Speaker 4: That she shouldn't be afraid of, and now she's spreading
- 2:53Speaker 4: that fear to other people.
- 2:55Speaker 1: Yeah, I think in ironically it's often sort of projection.
- 3:00Speaker 1: She would likely tell you that Trump won based on
- 3:04Speaker 1: fear while she's saying.
- 3:05Speaker 2: This, and.
- 3:08Speaker 1: It's just like you, she's also spreading misinformation, man, like
- 3:13Speaker 1: the idea that that that any of this is coming
- 3:16Speaker 1: to an end in any kind of way. I had
- 3:18Speaker 1: an old acquaintance who was offering to to marry same
- 3:22Speaker 1: sex couples before January, and I was like, do y'all
- 3:25Speaker 1: know that he's never opposed like ever yeah, ever, right.
- 3:29Speaker 4: I keep saying this, but my opposition to Trump in
- 3:32Speaker 4: the past has been that he was a moderate and
- 3:34Speaker 4: I was a conservative. So I'm confused that these people
- 3:39Speaker 4: who are on the left and or and or moderates
- 3:42Speaker 4: think that he's going to be some kind of right winger.
- 3:45Speaker 4: He never has been ever, ever, ever, ever, And he's
- 3:50Speaker 4: very malleable.
- 3:51Speaker 3: He's very open and convincing.
- 3:52Speaker 4: He I thought that the Democrats missed a lot of
- 3:54Speaker 4: opportunities in the first term to talk.
- 3:56Speaker 3: Him into stuff.
- 3:57Speaker 1: Now I get purprise.
- 3:59Speaker 2: Respected.
- 4:00Speaker 4: I hope that he doesn't take their conversations, but he
- 4:02Speaker 4: will because.
- 4:03Speaker 3: He likes so to do that.
- 4:04Speaker 1: Kim Kardashian walks through the office and is like, you
- 4:07Speaker 1: should work on pardoning people's slash criminal justice reform, and
- 4:10Speaker 1: he's like, maybe I will.
- 4:12Speaker 2: Yeah, Like that is yep.
- 4:15Speaker 4: I always say, Kim Kardashian understood the process more than
- 4:19Speaker 4: Senate you know, our House Democrats did. So who is
- 4:22Speaker 4: to blame for the Donald Trump win? Well, it's the
- 4:24Speaker 4: voter's Mary Catherine, those dastardly voters. They voted for the
- 4:29Speaker 4: wrong person. And Harris actually ran a flawless campaign. According
- 4:35Speaker 4: to the media, flawless, there were no mistakes.
- 4:38Speaker 6: And I think it's important to say that, you know,
- 4:41Speaker 6: anyone who has experienced or been in the United States
- 4:44Speaker 6: for any period of time and experience this country's history
- 4:47Speaker 6: and knows it cannot have believed that it would be
- 4:49Speaker 6: easy to elect a woman president, let alone a woman
- 4:53Speaker 6: of color.
- 4:53Speaker 3: Let's just be.
- 4:54Speaker 6: Clear, and nothing that was true yesterday about how flawlessly
- 4:59Speaker 6: this CA paign was run is not true now. I mean,
- 5:02Speaker 6: this really was an historic, flawlessly run campaign. She had
- 5:06Speaker 6: Queen Latifa never endorses anyone. She came out of doors,
- 5:10Speaker 6: you know. I mean, she had every prominent celebrity voice.
- 5:15Speaker 6: She had, she had the Taylor Swifty to the Swifties,
- 5:18Speaker 6: she had the beehive like, you could not have run
- 5:21Speaker 6: a better campaign in that short period of time. And
- 5:23Speaker 6: I think that's still.
- 5:23Speaker 4: True, and with a straight face they say that.
- 5:26Speaker 1: And this is one of those things where the overlap
- 5:29Speaker 1: of democratic activism and media is bad for them, because
- 5:34Speaker 1: what the Democratic Party actually needed was to run a primery.
- 5:37Speaker 1: What I actually needed was to focus on the fact
- 5:40Speaker 1: that Joe Biden was not for the job. Probably back
- 5:42Speaker 1: in twenty twenty one, twenty two and that they were
- 5:45Speaker 1: going to have to have a runway to something else.
- 5:48Speaker 2: They didn't do that.
- 5:49Speaker 1: Right well, Kamala Harris. Kamala Harris and the entire party
- 5:52Speaker 1: were part of covering that up. The media was part
- 5:55Speaker 1: of covering that up, which is why she had one
- 5:57Speaker 1: hundred and seven day opportunity which.
- 6:00Speaker 2: Was very short.
- 6:02Speaker 1: And also like both the party and the candidate need
- 6:06Speaker 1: to take responsibility for this. I was James Carville, who's
- 6:10Speaker 1: very emotional but still rational, said the other day, like
- 6:14Speaker 1: on the View, when she was asked what would you
- 6:16Speaker 1: do differently than Joe Biden? She couldn't come up with
- 6:18Speaker 1: an answer. Yeah, And this is the important part. That's
- 6:21Speaker 1: the only question she existed to answer. That's that's fall
- 6:26Speaker 1: And I think if you can't do that, you have
- 6:28Speaker 1: what can you do?
- 6:29Speaker 4: Queen Latifa is not going to save you.
- 6:31Speaker 3: Also, how much was Queen Latifa paid?
- 6:33Speaker 4: Because the other part of this is that apparently the
- 6:35Speaker 4: Harris campaign ran through a billion dollars and spent that
- 6:38Speaker 4: on utter nonsense.
- 6:40Speaker 3: They paid Oprah Winfrey.
- 6:42Speaker 4: A million dollars to show up a million dollars to
- 6:44Speaker 4: Oprah Winfrey.
- 6:46Speaker 3: She didn't do it for free.
- 6:47Speaker 4: Like I'm sorry, that's a really bad sign for you.
- 6:51Speaker 4: And I'm wonder if, like other celebrities got paid or
- 6:53Speaker 4: didn't get paid and now they hear this like.
- 6:55Speaker 3: Oh, I was supposed to get paid for that.
- 6:58Speaker 4: Also, she spent four four, one hundred thousand dollars a
- 7:01Speaker 4: day to put her face on the Las Vegas form.
- 7:06Speaker 4: Oh man, I'm trying that that's the official fear for
- 7:08Speaker 4: at this sphere. Why why what is that? I mean,
- 7:12Speaker 4: what a terrible use of money. And I'd be so
- 7:16Speaker 4: mad right now. If I was a donor to the
- 7:18Speaker 4: Kamala Harris campaign, I would say, this is what you
- 7:21Speaker 4: spent money on, and she'd build out that call her
- 7:24Speaker 4: daddy set in a hotel room for one hundred thousand dollars. Why,
- 7:28Speaker 4: I was the worst set I've ever seen my you know,
- 7:30Speaker 4: I showed it to my kids. We were all like,
- 7:32Speaker 4: I could do that for three hundred bucks.
- 7:34Speaker 2: Right, I mean it was.
- 7:35Speaker 1: It was truly like a two hundred dollars bill at
- 7:38Speaker 1: TJ Max that would have.
- 7:40Speaker 4: Like read fake books and some like pots.
- 7:42Speaker 1: And I have some experience with that, like I could
- 7:44Speaker 1: do with Oh okay, so you can get it for
- 7:46Speaker 1: like a hundred now it's really it's really wild. And
- 7:50Speaker 1: I think the idea was because she was this, She
- 7:54Speaker 1: was a commodity, she was a prepackaged thing. She wasn't
- 7:58Speaker 1: a person, and so so it was just like, put
- 8:01Speaker 1: cool things around her, put cool people around her, send
- 8:06Speaker 1: the signals that she is cool. Looks on the spirit,
- 8:09Speaker 1: that's a cool thing. Beyonce's cool. That's a cool thing
- 8:13Speaker 1: like And it just didn't hit voters in any way
- 8:18Speaker 1: about the things they cared about.
- 8:20Speaker 3: Now, they were like, you know, it would be cool.
- 8:22Speaker 4: How about reducing the price of eggs.
- 8:24Speaker 1: That would be cool. I feel like that's cool. Well,
- 8:26Speaker 1: and then some of the reaction to the election has
- 8:29Speaker 1: of course been to lecture them about how they shouldn't
- 8:32Speaker 1: vote based on their economic self interest. Are they letting that,
- 8:38Speaker 1: letting whether you could afford groceries cloud your judgment.
- 8:41Speaker 4: When there's so many more important issues than feeding your family.
- 8:45Speaker 1: Yeah, I think that's not a winning message for them.
- 8:49Speaker 1: I think they're not quite so coping with this yet.
- 8:53Speaker 1: But one of the things I would say to my
- 8:56Speaker 1: Democratic counterparts is that you lost.
- 9:00Speaker 2: Your own people.
- 9:01Speaker 1: Yeah, right, those are the people who left.
- 9:04Speaker 2: I think.
- 9:07Speaker 1: Someone said they were focused on Republicans who left the
- 9:09Speaker 1: Republican Party instead of on Democrats who were leaving the.
- 9:12Speaker 4: Different They were like, how about another Cheney?
- 9:16Speaker 7: And I think Democrats while I call yeah, because again
- 9:20Speaker 7: Trump is a moderate and so he was able to
- 9:23Speaker 7: unite people from both sides of the aisle and they
- 9:28Speaker 7: were able to support him without really compromising that much.
- 9:32Speaker 7: Actually it may have been Jensaki that said that, some
- 9:36Speaker 7: good thinking Jensaki. The other thing, can I note that
- 9:41Speaker 7: women are doing? And it goes into our next subject.
- 9:45Speaker 2: Is this four bu movement?
- 9:47Speaker 1: Yeah, which apparently the name comes from a fringe South
- 9:51Speaker 1: Korean feminist movement, so it debuted in the late twenty tens.
- 9:59Speaker 1: It's for B because B is a shorthand for the
- 10:02Speaker 1: word no in Korean.
- 10:03Speaker 2: So good a session. No sex, no dating, no marrying men,
- 10:09Speaker 2: no children.
- 10:10Speaker 1: Right, so that's one of the directives from.
- 10:12Speaker 4: I thought they were already doing that, right.
- 10:17Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 10:17Speaker 1: This is this type of I'm gonna call it hysterical disengagement.
- 10:24Speaker 1: I don't think it's going to help anyone win anymore elections.
- 10:27Speaker 4: Yeah, it doesn't move any votes, right, No, one's like
- 10:31Speaker 4: this is cool, this sounds amazing. I will join these women,
- 10:36Speaker 4: or I voted for Donald Trump, but now that I
- 10:38Speaker 4: see this, I will rethink that vote. There's not a
- 10:41Speaker 4: single person doing that, which is what the goal is.
- 10:44Speaker 4: I think if they thought about that, like the goal
- 10:46Speaker 4: is not to rage, the goal is not to punish, the.
- 10:49Speaker 3: Goal is not any of that.
- 10:50Speaker 4: The goal is to next time get more votes than
- 10:52Speaker 4: the other guy, they might rethink this strategy.
- 10:56Speaker 3: But I don't think any of these people are.
- 10:57Speaker 4: Thinking that far ahead. In fact, I think they think
- 11:00Speaker 4: that the country's over and democracy has ended and all
- 11:03Speaker 4: of that. Again, I don't remember taking to my bed
- 11:06Speaker 4: when John McCain lost, or Mitt Romney or you know,
- 11:10Speaker 4: Donald Trump last time, or any of that.
- 11:12Speaker 1: So I think that if it were my kids.
- 11:16Speaker 4: I'd say, I'm sorry you suffered this electoral loss.
- 11:20Speaker 1: Get over it and go to school. That's it.
- 11:24Speaker 3: Get out of that.
- 11:24Speaker 1: Oh well, that's another thing. By the way, our friend
- 11:27Speaker 1: Bethany Mandel wrote in the New York Post about moms
- 11:31Speaker 1: who are who clearly have scared the mess out of
- 11:34Speaker 1: their children over this.
- 11:36Speaker 2: Dad's too.
- 11:37Speaker 1: There's at least one dad mentioned, And this is an
- 11:40Speaker 1: ongoing problem from COVID to now where it's like, yeah,
- 11:43Speaker 1: it's the you need to stand in the breach for
- 11:46Speaker 1: your children. If you are scared of something, you can
- 11:50Speaker 1: you have perspective about it, right, Sometimes pretend you're not scared.
- 11:54Speaker 4: Dads on airplanes, yeah, considering the stability.
- 11:58Speaker 1: Them like, no, no, it's fine.
- 12:00Speaker 3: The crash. I totally think we're getting as you see.
- 12:03Speaker 1: Good for you, Carol, I thank you doing what you
- 12:06Speaker 1: need to do.
- 12:06Speaker 3: We'll be right back on normally.
- 12:11Speaker 4: When Donald Trump won the first time, we were living
- 12:14Speaker 4: in Brooklyn and my daughter was going to school in Manhattan.
- 12:16Speaker 4: She was in first grade, and I remember I stayed
- 12:18Speaker 4: up all night because when a shop to the system,
- 12:20Speaker 4: I had no id. You know, I did not think
- 12:22Speaker 4: he had any chance at all. It was unbelievable. She
- 12:24Speaker 4: wakes up in the morning and I kind of knew
- 12:26Speaker 4: what it was going to be like for her. In
- 12:27Speaker 4: New York City, the kids were going to be upset,
- 12:30Speaker 4: and they were. They were crying children in her class.
- 12:32Speaker 4: But just to praise my own parenting, I was like, hey,
- 12:35Speaker 4: I just want to tell you Donald Trump won. And
- 12:38Speaker 4: she looked at me and she's like, one what, she
- 12:43Speaker 4: was unaware he was running for anything, So oh, yeah,
- 12:46Speaker 4: that's how you the kids. First graders should be a
- 12:49Speaker 4: one what conversation, m H.
- 12:52Speaker 1: I like, my kids knew there's a presidential election going on.
- 12:54Speaker 1: They had a sort of they were underwhelmed by Kamala Harris,
- 12:58Speaker 1: but not because of me, Honestly. I let them just
- 13:00Speaker 1: listen to her, and they thought Donald Trump was sort
- 13:04Speaker 1: of funny, which actually is sort of a lesson for Democrats.
- 13:09Speaker 3: Yeah, be sort of funny about.
- 13:12Speaker 2: Why this went the way it went.
- 13:14Speaker 1: And I go, I always go back to the Harris
- 13:17Speaker 1: walls obviously. Yeah, if that is your take, you can't
- 13:22Speaker 1: convince anybody who might think something different.
- 13:25Speaker 2: That's it. So I think that's a problem for them.
- 13:29Speaker 1: Yeah. Can I also note, and I'm not going to
- 13:30Speaker 1: play the clip because it's too graphic, but there's one
- 13:33Speaker 1: one young woman it suggested that her revenge would be
- 13:39Speaker 1: throwing dirty sanitary products at the trucks of the men
- 13:45Speaker 1: who had caused this calamity man and I just had
- 13:49Speaker 1: a thought about that because she's like, Oh, they'll be
- 13:52Speaker 1: so horrified if they if they really want to control
- 13:54Speaker 1: our bodies, then you'll see.
- 13:55Speaker 2: What it's really like.
- 13:56Speaker 1: Right, every single college educator feminists has clogged a toilet at.
- 14:02Speaker 2: Some point doing the wrong thing.
- 14:06Speaker 1: And do they think it was college educated feminist plumbers
- 14:10Speaker 1: who came.
- 14:10Speaker 2: To clean that out?
- 14:11Speaker 3: Oh yeah, that's a really.
- 14:13Speaker 1: I just I just don't think you're gonna surprise them,
- 14:16Speaker 1: that's right.
- 14:18Speaker 2: Is that too much for the show? Sorry, everybody?
- 14:21Speaker 4: I mean, I think that's an excellent point. It wasn't
- 14:23Speaker 4: actually the feminists doing the plunging in there.
- 14:27Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, well I don't think you were in college
- 14:29Speaker 1: and messed that up.
- 14:30Speaker 3: Okay, yep.
- 14:33Speaker 4: The other thing is that white women are getting the
- 14:37Speaker 4: brunt of the complaints about what went wrong here from
- 14:40Speaker 4: the left. I'm talking progressive white women, not us, because
- 14:44Speaker 4: we're like, hah yeah, maybe it was our fault.
- 14:49Speaker 3: No, no, progressive white women.
- 14:51Speaker 4: And we're not going to play another joy read clip
- 14:53Speaker 4: because we have another one for later and that's just
- 14:54Speaker 4: too much joy read for any show. But she is like,
- 14:58Speaker 4: I'm not joining you or you know, resistance this time,
- 15:02Speaker 4: no pink hats this time for us. Black women are
- 15:04Speaker 4: sitting that out. And then another another clip I saw
- 15:08Speaker 4: on Instagram had this openly gay man talking about how
- 15:13Speaker 4: him and his husband now have to think about where
- 15:15Speaker 4: they're gonna live and whether the marriage is gonna be valid,
- 15:17Speaker 4: which again not a thing. And how white women like,
- 15:23Speaker 4: we're gonna wear blue bracelets to signal that they were
- 15:26Speaker 4: allies and the keep at such a wrong move for
- 15:29Speaker 4: them to do because if you were really an ally,
- 15:31Speaker 4: you wouldn't need the bracelet. I'm just like these white
- 15:34Speaker 4: women liberals keep the lift this way. I don't know
- 15:38Speaker 4: do they think when they hear these kinds of like attacks,
- 15:41Speaker 4: like real attacks on their character and on their person,
- 15:45Speaker 4: are they like, oh, they don't make me or do
- 15:48Speaker 4: they just take it?
- 15:49Speaker 1: I think they take it, and I think there is
- 15:52Speaker 1: there's a certain sub section that enjoys it, right Like there,
- 15:56Speaker 1: I saw one woman speaking, of course straight to camera
- 15:59Speaker 1: because all these selfie videos or all selfie videos, you
- 16:02Speaker 1: gotta set it up before you cry. And she's like,
- 16:06Speaker 1: she's like, it's not for you to decide whether you're
- 16:09Speaker 1: safe for black and brown women, It's for them to decide.
- 16:13Speaker 1: And it's like this self flagellation is so stuck in
- 16:17Speaker 1: twenty twenty. Yeah, and I think people are done.
- 16:21Speaker 2: With it, and I'd be so.
- 16:23Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 16:23Speaker 1: Emo reactions are not a small part of what was
- 16:28Speaker 1: rejected onto it, right Yeah, And.
- 16:31Speaker 3: You can never be right.
- 16:32Speaker 4: It's a circular firing squad. As I like to say,
- 16:34Speaker 4: that circular firing squad. They never miss they always hit somebody.
- 16:39Speaker 4: So if you're in that squad, like, maybe take a
- 16:43Speaker 4: step out, because it's going to be you one day.
- 16:45Speaker 4: Yeah it's white liberal.
- 16:46Speaker 3: Women today, but it could be anybody at any time.
- 16:49Speaker 4: Black men have been targeted for for that circular firing squad.
- 16:53Speaker 4: Occasionally they don't do enough of you know, black men,
- 16:56Speaker 4: I've heard or the white men of black people.
- 16:58Speaker 2: That's literally some thing people used to say.
- 17:02Speaker 4: And you know, so if you're in that leftist circular
- 17:05Speaker 4: firing squad, like, just no, they're going to come for
- 17:08Speaker 4: you eventually.
- 17:09Speaker 3: It might not be you today, but it will be sometime.
- 17:12Speaker 1: And a lot of people that used to be doing
- 17:15Speaker 1: that have and we're in your coalition have opted out.
- 17:18Speaker 2: As a result, by the.
- 17:19Speaker 1: Latino men are getting a lot of you know, men
- 17:21Speaker 1: and women are getting a lot of blowback because those
- 17:25Speaker 1: demographics moved toward Trump. But every demographic moved to toward
- 17:30Speaker 1: Trump except for college educated white women. I believe it's
- 17:34Speaker 1: the that's the one that no, I.
- 17:36Speaker 4: Think it's I think it's all women because black women
- 17:39Speaker 4: also did not move for Trump.
- 17:41Speaker 1: So so like the number of demographics that moved toward
- 17:47Speaker 1: Trump that are people you consider allies.
- 17:50Speaker 2: That should be in your coalition.
- 17:52Speaker 1: Yeah, so far out numbers those who moved toward the
- 17:56Speaker 1: Democratic Party. That's the thing you need to think about.
- 17:58Speaker 1: Did you see the stat that was like some exit
- 18:00Speaker 1: polling that sixty plus percent of American Indians very.
- 18:04Speaker 4: That's so good, every one of those like, you know,
- 18:08Speaker 4: and this person's unsafe, and that person's unsafe, and Indigenous
- 18:11Speaker 4: people are unsafe, and Indigenous people are like, we're going
- 18:13Speaker 4: to be over here now.
- 18:15Speaker 2: It's really amazing.
- 18:16Speaker 1: I do think the again I said, I'd like a
- 18:19Speaker 1: decisive victory no matter what happens.
- 18:21Speaker 2: Yeah, And this one was so decisive.
- 18:23Speaker 1: Across the board that I think it is going to
- 18:25Speaker 1: force a lot of people on the left to reckon
- 18:28Speaker 1: with it eventually, I will. I'll take another couple of
- 18:31Speaker 1: losses before that.
- 18:32Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't know.
- 18:33Speaker 4: I mean another point of data. Forty eight states moved
- 18:39Speaker 4: to the right, all but Utah and Washington State. And
- 18:43Speaker 4: what I heard about Utah is that it was so
- 18:45Speaker 4: on the right that there wasn't just that much space
- 18:48Speaker 4: to move to the right, So I'm what you need
- 18:51Speaker 4: to do.
- 18:51Speaker 3: Yeah, you can't just all least so far.
- 18:53Speaker 2: You can go.
- 18:55Speaker 4: So yeah, forty eight states moved to the right, including
- 18:57Speaker 4: California and New York.
- 18:59Speaker 1: Because it's gonna be some soul searching.
- 19:00Speaker 3: I again don't know that there will be, but let's hope.
- 19:04Speaker 1: A notable I don't know if I said this on
- 19:06Speaker 1: the last podcast, but that that referendum that increased about
- 19:11Speaker 1: initiatives that increased punishments for shoplifting and drug offenses in
- 19:15Speaker 1: California passed at like seventy plus percent all over the state.
- 19:22Speaker 1: And meanwhile, Gavin Newsome future of the Democratic Party is like,
- 19:25Speaker 1: I am ready to resist the Trump administration. It's like,
- 19:30Speaker 1: I'm not sure that your state is ready for that.
- 19:32Speaker 1: I think I told you that they're resisting you, right,
- 19:36Speaker 1: liberal governance in their towns.
- 19:38Speaker 4: Yeah, well, this is all shaping up to be a
- 19:41Speaker 4: really happy Thanksgiving. That's the country. I think families are
- 19:46Speaker 4: getting ready to hopefully not be at each other's throats.
- 19:50Speaker 4: But it certainly seems like the media, particularly MSNBC and CNN,
- 19:56Speaker 4: are setting it up that perhaps they want to encourage
- 20:00Speaker 4: people to argue with their Trump relatives Joy Reid. Second
- 20:04Speaker 4: clip from her Today had on a psychologist, and she
- 20:06Speaker 4: asked her if the psychologist recommends being around those awful
- 20:10Speaker 4: family members who voted differently than you did.
- 20:14Speaker 6: How do you interact with people who you know voted
- 20:15Speaker 6: for this right if you are an LGBTQ person and
- 20:18Speaker 6: you know someone in your family voted essentially against your rights,
- 20:21Speaker 6: or you're a woman knowing that you know this man
- 20:23Speaker 6: was calling people the B word. Jade Vance was literally
- 20:27Speaker 6: calling Kamala Harris the trash and said we're going to
- 20:29Speaker 6: take out the trash. I know a lot of black
- 20:32Speaker 6: women were incredibly triggered by that. And if you then
- 20:35Speaker 6: meet somebody and you know they voted for the people
- 20:37Speaker 6: who called you trash, or if you're Puerto Rican, you
- 20:39Speaker 6: know and you know someone voted that way, do you recommend,
- 20:43Speaker 6: just from a psychological standpoint, being around them. We got
- 20:45Speaker 6: the holidays coming up.
- 20:48Speaker 8: So I love that you asked this question because you
- 20:51Speaker 8: know there is a push, I think just a societal
- 20:53Speaker 8: norm that if somebody is your family, that they are
- 20:57Speaker 8: entitled to your time. And I think think the answer
- 21:00Speaker 8: is absolutely not. So if you are going to a
- 21:04Speaker 8: situation where you have family members where you have close
- 21:06Speaker 8: friends who you know have voted in ways that are
- 21:11Speaker 8: against you, like what you said, against your livelihood, and
- 21:15Speaker 8: it's completely fine to not be around those people and
- 21:18Speaker 8: to tell them why, you know, to say I have
- 21:21Speaker 8: a problem with the way that you voted because it
- 21:24Speaker 8: went against my very livelihood and I'm not going to
- 21:26Speaker 8: be around you this holiday. I need to take some
- 21:28Speaker 8: space for me and I actually talk to you know,
- 21:31Speaker 8: adults as well as advising parents for children. I mean,
- 21:36Speaker 8: I think, you know, I don't think that you should
- 21:38Speaker 8: force children. I don't think you should have forced adults
- 21:41Speaker 8: to be around people just because they're your family. I
- 21:43Speaker 8: think there's a level of, you know, need to establish boundaries.
- 21:47Speaker 8: And if you feel like you need to establish boundaries
- 21:50Speaker 8: with people, whether they're your family or not, I think
- 21:53Speaker 8: you should very much be entitled to do so, and
- 21:55Speaker 8: I think it may be essential for your mental health.
- 21:58Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't know.
- 22:00Speaker 4: I am of the don't split apart from your family
- 22:05Speaker 4: or your close.
- 22:05Speaker 3: Friends do over politics.
- 22:07Speaker 4: On X this account, this small account went viral for
- 22:10Speaker 4: posting that people should cut off their family members. And look,
- 22:14Speaker 4: you know, a small account on x saying something whatever,
- 22:17Speaker 4: but that person got all of these comments, including from
- 22:20Speaker 4: people who said they were cutting off their.
- 22:23Speaker 3: Children and never seeing their grandchildren, and.
- 22:25Speaker 4: It's just crushing. And I can't imagine what.
- 22:28Speaker 3: My kids would need to believe.
- 22:29Speaker 4: And I've made the joke like maybe you know, even
- 22:32Speaker 4: if they come home in a Stalin shirt, I'll be like, h,
- 22:35Speaker 4: he killed a lot of our family members. Please don't
- 22:37Speaker 4: wear that. But I would never be like, and you're
- 22:39Speaker 4: not welcome in my home. Belief is just that, and
- 22:43Speaker 4: you can't and you shouldn't be cutting off family members
- 22:47Speaker 4: for what they believe and who they voted for, families everything,
- 22:51Speaker 4: And you know, I really think that people need to
- 22:54Speaker 4: hear that, they need to hear that family is important
- 22:56Speaker 4: and your politics are less important than that.
- 22:59Speaker 1: Yeah, I think the people that folks should set healthy
- 23:03Speaker 1: boundaries with first are like joy read, you know, because
- 23:09Speaker 1: because a lot of this truly, and I know that
- 23:12Speaker 1: some people really are hurting. And I thought the same
- 23:14Speaker 1: thing during COVID. I thought there were people who were
- 23:18Speaker 1: really hurting who shouldn't have to be because a lot
- 23:21Speaker 1: of things had been ginned up to make them very scared,
- 23:25Speaker 1: and that.
- 23:25Speaker 2: That was a systematic effort. And I didn't like that.
- 23:28Speaker 1: And I know that yelling people yelling at people about
- 23:31Speaker 1: their anxiety probably doesn't solve their anxiety, but like there
- 23:33Speaker 1: needs to be some evaluation of how much of this
- 23:38Speaker 1: angst is self inflicted, because if you're cutting off family members,
- 23:45Speaker 1: I would suggest that you wait for Trump to like
- 23:48Speaker 1: do something first, right, Yeah, that would if you. I
- 23:53Speaker 1: actually heard somebody who had who is very on the
- 23:58Speaker 1: never Trump side of the folks who the Republican Party
- 24:01Speaker 1: over him, who said, like, yeah, I think one of
- 24:04Speaker 1: the better things that we could do as never Trump
- 24:06Speaker 1: people and that the media could do is actually evaluate
- 24:09Speaker 1: what he does balls and joke.
- 24:12Speaker 2: It's bold.
- 24:12Speaker 1: It's a bold strategy, and I think it's one that
- 24:15Speaker 1: many people should undertake, and it would keep them a
- 24:18Speaker 1: little bit more between the navigational beacons because this is
- 24:23Speaker 1: I get it. Look, you want to set some healthy boundaries.
- 24:26Speaker 1: Sure that if you feel this way, the rest of
- 24:28Speaker 1: your family is going to have a great time with
- 24:31Speaker 1: you anyway. But like, it's very sad, like you say,
- 24:34Speaker 1: I have plenty of friends of family who disagree with me,
- 24:37Speaker 1: always have and they know it. I talk about it publicly,
- 24:42Speaker 1: and you know, I.
- 24:44Speaker 2: Just think it. It's very tragic to end up.
- 24:48Speaker 4: Yeah, this place, we're going to take a short break
- 24:50Speaker 4: and come right back with normally, But if you didn't
- 24:56Speaker 4: talk politics with the people in your family that disagree
- 24:59Speaker 4: with you. I mean, I always think about this, like,
- 25:02Speaker 4: you guys are not solving anything. Nobody's solving anything at
- 25:05Speaker 4: the Thanksgiving table, Like, oh okay, now that we have
- 25:07Speaker 4: screamed at each other and ruined thingsgiving, things will be
- 25:11Speaker 4: better in the country. Like that doesn't happen. So maybe
- 25:13Speaker 4: just argue about you know, marshmallows on sweet potatoes, because
- 25:17Speaker 4: I'm pretty in for that.
- 25:17Speaker 6: Well.
- 25:18Speaker 1: By the way, I would say that you're if you
- 25:20Speaker 1: are a person of the left and who would like
- 25:22Speaker 1: for the Democratic Party to win more elections, you're not
- 25:25Speaker 1: helping by disengaging from the people that they need to
- 25:28Speaker 1: woo back into the party.
- 25:29Speaker 3: Yep, especially people you love.
- 25:31Speaker 1: Yes, those could be the people you might be most
- 25:34Speaker 1: convincing with, right, So I think that's a bad idea
- 25:38Speaker 1: of speaking of things that he's done. By the way,
- 25:40Speaker 1: that might be interesting to those who are scared. Did
- 25:45Speaker 1: you know that he named his chief of staff Carol
- 25:47Speaker 1: That's right, Yeah, Jusey Wiles, Susie Wiles as chief staff.
- 25:51Speaker 1: By the way, Trump has had now the first female
- 25:55Speaker 1: campaign manager to win a presidential election. That was Kelly
- 25:59Speaker 1: and Conway and Susie Wiles. The incoming chief of staff
- 26:02Speaker 1: for the White House will be the first female chief
- 26:04Speaker 1: of staff for the White.
- 26:05Speaker 3: Someone's like, you value women?
- 26:08Speaker 4: Yeah, maybe he actually isn't anti women the way that
- 26:11Speaker 4: they say, or are they wearing the like, you know,
- 26:15Speaker 4: the the red outfit. I forgot what it's called.
- 26:17Speaker 1: Oh yeah, the Handmaid's t handmaid Yeah, that's actually they're
- 26:20Speaker 1: going to do. Any Liebowitz is going to do a
- 26:22Speaker 1: photoshoot for Susie Wiles like she does for all liberal women,
- 26:24Speaker 1: except she's going to require that Susie Will's wear the
- 26:27Speaker 1: Handmaid's tail outfit.
- 26:30Speaker 2: That's right.
- 26:31Speaker 3: Well, I'm sure religious figures.
- 26:33Speaker 4: Are saying what we're saying, right that perhaps don't argue
- 26:37Speaker 4: with your families over Thanksgiving, don't cut people.
- 26:40Speaker 3: Off or u and stuff like that.
- 26:43Speaker 4: However, Jonathan Kapeart at MSNBC interviewed a bishop who is
- 26:48Speaker 4: not saying that.
- 26:49Speaker 3: That's roll the clip.
- 26:50Speaker 9: The thing that I'm grappling with is that someone was
- 26:55Speaker 9: elected who ran a campaign that was openly hostile openly racist, xenophobic, misogynistic,
- 27:05Speaker 9: transphob to everything. And yet now the election's over, folks
- 27:11Speaker 9: accept the results. But now how do we How do
- 27:14Speaker 9: we move forward when we know the people in you
- 27:18Speaker 9: have people in their families who voted for him, They
- 27:20Speaker 9: work with people who voted for him, They live next
- 27:23Speaker 9: to people who voted for him.
- 27:25Speaker 7: What do you.
- 27:28Speaker 9: How do we how should we deal with those neighbors,
- 27:32Speaker 9: co workers, family members.
- 27:34Speaker 10: Well, first of all, we have to remain passionate about
- 27:37Speaker 10: protecting these most vulnerable people. You're absolutely right. If this
- 27:43Speaker 10: new president does half of what he says, there will
- 27:46Speaker 10: be so many of them in danger. I think the
- 27:49Speaker 10: way to move forward with in a family or in
- 27:52Speaker 10: the whole culture is this. Every religion in the world
- 27:56Speaker 10: has some version of do under others as you would
- 27:58Speaker 10: have them do under you. Love your neighbor, even love
- 28:02Speaker 10: your enemies. Those of us Christians have. And here's the trick.
- 28:06Speaker 10: Loving has little to do with liking. You don't have
- 28:09Speaker 10: to like someone to treat them like the child of
- 28:12Speaker 10: God they are. You can argue with them, you can
- 28:14Speaker 10: fight with them over all kinds of things, but you
- 28:18Speaker 10: can't not treat them as a person of worth and
- 28:22Speaker 10: respect that God que him to be.
- 28:24Speaker 4: He confirms, for kypart, that so many Americans are going
- 28:28Speaker 4: to be in danger. I do not like that from
- 28:31Speaker 4: a religious leader at all, but I guess that's the
- 28:34Speaker 4: guy who.
- 28:34Speaker 3: Goes on MSNBC.
- 28:36Speaker 1: Well, he comes back around at the enemies like you
- 28:38Speaker 1: should treat people with respect, and I assume like it
- 28:41Speaker 1: seemed quite clear that he included people who voted the
- 28:44Speaker 1: way you didn't under that umbrella of God's love, which
- 28:48Speaker 1: I appreciate, and Ky parts like Jack, can we go
- 28:53Speaker 1: to someone else on this? I do think again part
- 28:57Speaker 1: of this emotionalism and the reaction and to Trump, who,
- 29:01Speaker 1: like Grant, it is a very unconventional candidate. I understand
- 29:04Speaker 1: that people are not used to all. We should be
- 29:06Speaker 1: used to it by now, but sure I understand that
- 29:08Speaker 1: they're evaluating him in a way that is different from
- 29:10Speaker 1: other candidates. That it can be jar but like when
- 29:14Speaker 1: you freak out to this degree as they have been
- 29:18Speaker 1: doing since twenty fifteen, people read, Okay, it's the end
- 29:23Speaker 1: of the world, and then it wasn't the end of
- 29:24Speaker 1: the world for forty years, and then they say he's
- 29:26Speaker 1: Hitler and he doesn't look like Hitler.
- 29:28Speaker 2: Because Hitler's just serving fries.
- 29:30Speaker 1: And I just think that it creates this gap between
- 29:34Speaker 1: what the leader telling people and what they experience in
- 29:37Speaker 1: their real lives, and they're not buying it. And Jonathan
- 29:41Speaker 1: Caepart is like a lead purveyor of the things that
- 29:43Speaker 1: sharing are not.
- 29:44Speaker 4: Buy Yeah, absolutely all of that is correct. I don't
- 29:50Speaker 4: think any lessons will be learned. I think we're hopefully
- 29:54Speaker 4: getting through to somebody with this, But I just I
- 29:57Speaker 4: see them doubling down on the crazy for the next
- 29:59Speaker 4: fe years and that's unfortunate.
- 30:02Speaker 2: I think it won't go well for them.
- 30:03Speaker 1: Although you know, as as noted, Trump will have to
- 30:08Speaker 1: do things that earn him cred with the people who
- 30:11Speaker 1: voted for Yeah, so that will be part of the
- 30:15Speaker 1: formula as well. Can we note one last thing before
- 30:18Speaker 1: we're done, a literal victory dance for Trump in the
- 30:22Speaker 1: NFL this weekend? Is then it fell spelling?
- 30:25Speaker 4: I thought after the Cowboys collapse, we're we're all done
- 30:28Speaker 4: here or you just checked out?
- 30:30Speaker 3: Yeah? I mean I is it still on TV? I
- 30:32Speaker 3: thought they don't.
- 30:33Speaker 1: As a lion span an uncharacteristic couple of decent seasons.
- 30:36Speaker 2: So no, So Nick Bosa, who is.
- 30:39Speaker 1: A who plays for the forty nine ers.
- 30:43Speaker 2: First this past week, he.
- 30:44Speaker 1: Was fine eleven thousand dollars for violating league policy against
- 30:49Speaker 1: displaying personal messages when he crashed an NBC postgame interview
- 30:54Speaker 1: wearing a Maga Okay, right, so that was hender.
- 30:57Speaker 11: They usually fine people for political messages, Mary Catherine, I
- 31:01Speaker 11: feel like there was a lot of political messaging for
- 31:03Speaker 11: a while there that no one was fined for, so
- 31:06Speaker 11: perhaps perhaps this was a new, newly implemented policy.
- 31:11Speaker 1: So he gets fined, he says it's worth it.
- 31:13Speaker 2: I don't care if they find me.
- 31:14Speaker 1: Uh. And then at this week's game, he scores a
- 31:18Speaker 1: touchdown and he joined by uh.
- 31:22Speaker 3: Several teammates of color.
- 31:23Speaker 1: I should note did be trump YMCA dance as his
- 31:27Speaker 1: celebration dance, and you know what, they can't find him
- 31:30Speaker 1: for that one's but I think that sort of encapsulates
- 31:36Speaker 1: again this phenomenon where he wears a Maga hat. He's
- 31:40Speaker 1: fined for his centrist to right leaning Maga views. The
- 31:46Speaker 1: rules feel like they're different for other people. And then
- 31:50Speaker 1: in the end a bunch of people join in in
- 31:52Speaker 1: this goofy dance because they don't find Trump to be
- 31:56Speaker 1: the threat that the people in charge have been telling them.
- 32:00Speaker 4: He is, yeah, Righty Trump should have just ran on
- 32:03Speaker 4: He's not actually Hitler.
- 32:04Speaker 1: Was that the that was sort of the campaign, that
- 32:06Speaker 1: was right, he did really run on that. Trump of
- 32:09Speaker 1: course put on truth social in all caps. Nick Bosa
- 32:12Speaker 1: is a great player.
- 32:16Speaker 3: Amazing that.
- 32:18Speaker 2: That's where were end for today.
- 32:20Speaker 3: I love it well.
