Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Malcolm Fleming: Certified Builders Chief Executive on demand for construction workers increasing
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: It appears the confidence is returning to the construction sector.
- 0:03Speaker 1: Seek as released its monthly job report and builders are
- 0:06Speaker 1: the big winner. Job ads for construction jump three point
- 0:09Speaker 1: four percent from November to December. Trades and engineering saw
- 0:12Speaker 1: increases of one point five to two point six percent
- 0:15Speaker 1: compared to last year. There are, wait for this, forty
- 0:18Speaker 1: three percent more job ads for builders. And Malcolm Fleming
- 0:22Speaker 1: is the CEO of Certified Builders in New Zealand and
- 0:25Speaker 1: joins here this morning and morning tea.
- 0:26Speaker 2: Malcolm, Good morning Andrew.
- 0:28Speaker 1: So these jobs are they sort of like one offs
- 0:30Speaker 1: or are they longer term employment contracts showing a longer
- 0:33Speaker 1: term security.
- 0:35Speaker 2: Look those numbers from secrearly encouraging and the whole they've
- 0:40Speaker 2: being reflected on what we're seeing as well. So part
- 0:42Speaker 2: of the membership benefit of these on Certified Builders is
- 0:45Speaker 2: that our members have access to employment agreements and across
- 0:48Speaker 2: January they are running a twenty percent up on what
- 0:51Speaker 2: the twenty twenty five averages were, and given that January
- 0:56Speaker 2: is a typically slow month, those numbers are ready encouraging.
- 0:59Speaker 1: Where are all the projects that these jobs are coming
- 1:01Speaker 1: from right.
- 1:03Speaker 2: Across the country. We've been talking about over the last
- 1:06Speaker 2: couple of years that the likes of the South Island
- 1:09Speaker 2: patches the North would have been sort of been the
- 1:12Speaker 2: hot points of construction. We're starting to see this generally
- 1:15Speaker 2: fly across more balanced across the country.
- 1:19Speaker 1: We heard some complaints last year, of course, that the
- 1:21Speaker 1: government stopped a lot of projects on their capex, on
- 1:24Speaker 1: their actual their assey its either fixing up hospitals or
- 1:28Speaker 1: building state houses and stuff like that, and that put
- 1:30Speaker 1: a lot of the construction industry and the builders out
- 1:33Speaker 1: of a job. Is that starting to pick up or not.
- 1:36Speaker 2: Yeah, that was really unfortunate, the slow down or the
- 1:39Speaker 2: stoppage of projects that were already in train, and that
- 1:43Speaker 2: affected the industry really badly, about fifteen thousand jobs lost
- 1:47Speaker 2: over across that eighteen months. We're starting to see that
- 1:50Speaker 2: pick up now from central government projects coming onto market
- 1:55Speaker 2: and we saw snippets of that late last year with
- 1:58Speaker 2: school works, through defense housing, the Upper Norkland Live Imports,
- 2:05Speaker 2: naval base, and that's starting to sort of go on
- 2:08Speaker 2: through with hospitals and things. So we're starting to see
- 2:11Speaker 2: those signs. But in general in terms of homeowners as well,
- 2:14Speaker 2: they're starting to feel more confident about taking on projects
- 2:18Speaker 2: and that confidence hasn't been there for quite something.
- 2:20Speaker 1: And the other big story from this week is that
- 2:22Speaker 1: Fletcher has sold off their construction arm to a French
- 2:24Speaker 1: company called Vancy. Will will that affect building jobs or
- 2:29Speaker 1: will Vancy just take up what Fletchers was already doing.
- 2:34Speaker 2: Well because a really sad story. Were appointed to see
- 2:41Speaker 2: the loss of the features as a commercial contractor. They
- 2:46Speaker 2: haven't been in the vertical space for a while, that's
- 2:48Speaker 2: in terms of buildings, and I've been sorely missed. And
- 2:51Speaker 2: they had a bad run back in the twenty tens
- 2:53Speaker 2: with three main projects in particular. It didn't go well
- 2:56Speaker 2: for them, just as Pressington christ Church started too in
- 2:59Speaker 2: auckland Bay International Convention Center which is just open. So
- 3:04Speaker 2: the expertise has been sadly missed in that space. I've
- 3:09Speaker 2: been in the storm the horizontal doing the infrastructure. That
- 3:13Speaker 2: particular work will be picked will continue on just under
- 3:17Speaker 2: a new name. But really sweet to see a real
- 3:19Speaker 2: construction icon like Bletcher out of the commercial absolut instruction space.
- 3:24Speaker 1: Absolutely, Malcolm, and I thank you so much for your
- 3:26Speaker 1: tell Malcolm Fleming. He is a certified build a CEO.
