- Lucas: Hej och välkommen tillbaka! This is episode 11 of Learn Swedish with Fexingo. Luna: Hej Lucas! So glad to be back. I've been practicing my greetings, but I want to make sure I have the time-of-day ones down. Lucas: Perfect timing. Today we're going to focus on the four basic time-of-day greetings. You already know some of them from previous episodes, but we'll do a deep dive. Luna: Oh, great. I remember we did Hej and God morgon in the bakery episode. That was fun. Lucas: Exactly. So let's start with the general one. Hej. Say it with me: Hej. Luna: Hej. Lucas: Perfect. Hej works anytime, anywhere. Now, for the morning: God morgon. Luna: God morgon. Lucas: Good. God morgon is used from early morning until around lunchtime. Next, for the afternoon: God eftermiddag. Luna: God eftermiddag. That's a mouthful. Lucas: It is! Let's break it down: God is like 'good', and eftermiddag means 'afternoon'. So God eftermiddag. Luna: God eftermiddag. I'll practice that one a lot. Lucas: And finally, for the evening or night: God kväll. Luna: God kväll. That's shorter. Easier. Lucas: Yes. God kväll is used from around 6 PM onwards. So let's do a quick review. Repeat after me: Hej. Luna: Hej. Lucas: God morgon. Luna: God morgon. Lucas: God eftermiddag. Luna: God eftermiddag. Lucas: God kväll. Luna: God kväll. Lucas, I think I need a little scene to use these. Lucas: Sure. Let's do a quick role-play. It's morning. I'll be you, knocking on a friend's door. You open the door. Ready? Luna: Ready. Lucas: Knock knock. God morgon! Luna: God morgon! Come in. Lucas: Nice. Now, at noon, you meet someone at a café. I'll be the friend. You say Hej. Luna: Hej! Lucas: Hej! How are you? Actually, we could use an afternoon greeting. It's one PM. So: God eftermiddag. Luna: God eftermiddag. That felt natural. Lucas: And now, evening. You're at a dinner party. I arrive. You say? Luna: God kväll! Lucas: God kväll! Wonderful. That's the whole set. Now, sometimes in Swedish, you might just stick with Hej all the time, but using the time-specific ones shows effort. Luna: I like that. So when I walk into my Swedish class at 8 AM, I say God morgon. Lucas: Exactly. And if you see your teacher at 2 PM, say God eftermiddag. Luna: Got it. Let me try them all in a row. Hej, God morgon, God eftermiddag, God kväll. Lucas: That was great. Just a tiny correction: on God eftermiddag, make sure the 'd' is soft. God eftermiddag. Luna: God eftermiddag. Better? Lucas: Much better. Now let's do a quick recap quiz. I'll say a time of day, you say the greeting. Morning. Luna: God morgon. Lucas: Afternoon. Luna: God eftermiddag. Lucas: Evening. Luna: God kväll. Lucas: Any time. Luna: Hej. Lucas: Nailed it. You're ready to greet Swedes at any hour. Luna: Tack! I feel more confident now. Lucas: That's the goal. Remember, practice these throughout your day. When you wake up, say God morgon. When you have lunch, say God eftermiddag. At dinner, God kväll. And Hej is your safety net. Luna: I'll do that. Thanks Lucas. And thanks to Fexingo for this cozy lesson. Lucas: Yes, thanks for listening. Keep practicing, and we'll see you next time. Hej då! Luna: Hej då!
