- 0:00Speaker 1: Let us pray. But the voice answered me again from heaven,
- 0:06Speaker 1: What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common. Acts
- 0:10Speaker 1: 11.9 Jesus, thank you for showing me the most important
- 0:16Speaker 1: lesson in my life when it comes to people. Thank
- 0:20Speaker 1: you for showing me that whomever you deemed as clean
- 0:24Speaker 1: and pure, no one can reverse it. Thank you for
- 0:29Speaker 1: showing me, Jesus, that your plan is for all people,
- 0:33Speaker 1: regardless of their ethnicity, economic standing, and upbringing. Similar to
- 0:40Speaker 1: the life of Peter, use me in my industry to
- 0:44Speaker 1: share stories of your goodness and mercy. As I speak,
- 0:50Speaker 1: let your Holy Spirit charge and change the hearts of
- 0:53Speaker 1: everyone listening. Let your loving kindness be put on full display.
- 1:00Speaker 1: Like the centurion soldier and his family, may other families
- 1:04Speaker 1: come to know the saving grace of Jesus Christ. You
- 1:10Speaker 1: are a game changer. You are the way maker. And
- 1:15Speaker 1: through me, others will know that you have called them
- 1:19Speaker 1: and your desire is to love on them. In Jesus' name, amen.
- 1:29Speaker 1: Thank you for making prayer a priority in your day.
- 1:32Speaker 1: To learn more about the Bible, stay tuned for today's story.
- 1:36Speaker 1: Brought to you by BibleInAYear.com.
- 1:48Speaker 2: Unclean. In our last story, we saw the work of
- 1:52Speaker 2: God through Peter. One man was restored from being crippled
- 1:56Speaker 2: for eight years. Another was dead and raised to life.
- 2:01Speaker 2: In this, we saw the will of God moving people
- 2:04Speaker 2: out of their beds and into a life of purpose.
- 2:07Speaker 2: Now we see God extend his reach further than just
- 2:10Speaker 2: the Jews. We see a Roman family come to know
- 2:13Speaker 2: the truth and power of Jesus. Peter, who would be
- 2:17Speaker 2: convinced by a dream that no person is common, would
- 2:21Speaker 2: witness the extraordinary power of Christ. Inspired by the book
- 2:26Speaker 2: of Acts.
- 2:30Speaker 3: Hello, I'm Pastor Jack Graham with today's episode of The
- 2:32Speaker 3: Bible in a Year. Thanks for joining us. In yesterday's episode,
- 2:37Speaker 3: we heard how God worked through Peter in the towns
- 2:39Speaker 3: of Lydda and Joppa to bring physical healing and life
- 2:44Speaker 3: to the sick and dead. And that ultimately pointed people
- 2:48Speaker 3: to faith in Jesus Christ. Today, we'll see the gospel
- 2:53Speaker 3: once again going beyond the Jewish people as a Roman
- 2:57Speaker 3: family comes to faith in Christ. We'll also see how
- 3:00Speaker 3: God is working on the hearts of His disciples as
- 3:02Speaker 3: He speaks to Peter and shows him that no person
- 3:05Speaker 3: is unclean or excluded from God's grace. Let's listen now
- 3:09Speaker 3: to the reading of God's Word.
- 3:13Speaker 2: The night was silent under the crescent moon. The birds
- 3:17Speaker 2: had not emerged to welcome the morning, and the only
- 3:20Speaker 2: sound was that of stirring in Cornelius' bed. He tossed
- 3:24Speaker 2: and turned in the night, experiencing the intensity of God
- 3:27Speaker 2: coming to his dream. Cornelius, the Lord said. Cornelius stared
- 3:33Speaker 2: at the Lord in complete terror. His bones shook, and
- 3:36Speaker 2: his heart seemed to be beating out of his chest.
- 3:40Speaker 2: Here I am, he whimpered. The Lord spoke with great clarity.
- 3:44Speaker 2: I have seen your righteousness, Cornelius. I have seen your
- 3:48Speaker 2: generosity to the poor, and your gentle spirit. Your prayers
- 3:52Speaker 2: to me have been heard. Now send men to Joppa.
- 3:56Speaker 2: My servant Peter resides there by the sea. Cornelius woke
- 4:01Speaker 2: with a jolt. He rubbed his eyes and looked out
- 4:03Speaker 2: his window. The sun was rising and there was work
- 4:06Speaker 2: the Lord desired to do in his household. Cornelius was
- 4:09Speaker 2: a Roman centurion and a Gentile. Many of the Jewish
- 4:13Speaker 2: believers still held on to the belief that Gentiles were
- 4:16Speaker 2: somewhat unclean and not a part of the people of God.
- 4:19Speaker 2: Yet Cornelius remained alert to what the Lord was doing,
- 4:23Speaker 2: so he sent for Peter. The next day Peter was
- 4:26Speaker 2: kneeling by the sea. He often looked out into the ocean,
- 4:29Speaker 2: remembering how Jesus calmed the storms that surrounded him. Now
- 4:34Speaker 2: he prayed that Jesus would calm his inner storms. Peter
- 4:37Speaker 2: closed his eyes, doing his best to focus on the
- 4:40Speaker 2: voice of God. However, his stomach had other plans. Peter
- 4:45Speaker 2: was famished and greatly desired something to eat. As he
- 4:48Speaker 2: was praying, the Lord caused him to sleep. Peter saw
- 4:52Speaker 2: the heavens opened up like light through a cave. PETER
- 4:56Speaker 2: GAZED UPON WHAT SEEMED TO BE A LARGE SHEET DESCENDING
- 4:59Speaker 2: GRACEFULLY TO THE EARTH. PETER WATCHED AS ALL KINDS OF REPTILES, BIRDS,
- 5:04Speaker 2: AND ANIMALS GRAZED ON THE SHEET. PETER WATCHED THE BEASTS CURIOUSLY.
- 5:09Speaker 2: THEN HE HEARD A VOICE FROM HEAVEN SAYING, ARISE, PETER,
- 5:12Speaker 2: HUNT AND EAT. PETER PONDERED THE COMMAND. WAS THIS A TEST?
- 5:18Speaker 2: HE KNEW THAT MANY OF THE ANIMALS PRESENTED WERE NOT
- 5:20Speaker 2: CONSIDERED CLEAN BY THE OLD COVENANT LAW. Did God truly
- 5:24Speaker 2: want him to eat what was once considered unholy? Peter
- 5:27Speaker 2: shook his head. By no means. I have never eaten
- 5:31Speaker 2: anything common or unclean, Peter said very sure of himself.
- 5:35Speaker 2: Peter believed he had passed God's test, showing himself to
- 5:38Speaker 2: be obedient with old traditions. Yet the voice spoke a
- 5:42Speaker 2: second time, saying, What God has made clean you shall
- 5:46Speaker 2: not call unclean. The saying was repeated three times, and
- 5:50Speaker 2: Peter woke up. Still hungry and still confused, he went
- 5:55Speaker 2: to go eat, still pondering what the Lord meant in
- 5:57Speaker 2: his heart. A few hours passed, and the men sent
- 6:01Speaker 2: by Cornelius had reached Peter. They implored him to join
- 6:04Speaker 2: them at Cornelius' home. They told Peter of Cornelius' faithfulness
- 6:09Speaker 2: and goodwill towards the people of God. So Peter went
- 6:12Speaker 2: back with them to Caesarea. They walked for over a
- 6:15Speaker 2: day and arrived at the home of the centurion. Peter
- 6:18Speaker 2: walked in through the door and saw a house filled
- 6:21Speaker 2: with Roman Gentiles. All of Cornelius' family and friends were
- 6:25Speaker 2: there to see Peter. When Cornelius saw Peter, he ran
- 6:28Speaker 2: towards him and fell at his feet. Peter's face grew red.
- 6:32Speaker 2: He was flustered by the gesture. Please stand up. I
- 6:36Speaker 2: am only a man, like you. Cornelius stood to his feet.
- 6:40Speaker 2: As Peter looked around the room, he began to realize
- 6:42Speaker 2: what God was trying to say to him through his dream.
- 6:45Speaker 2: He saw many faces wearing expectant grins. Peter sighed and
- 6:49Speaker 2: laughed to himself. God was faithful to him. He had
- 6:53Speaker 2: shown Peter exactly what his will was. Peter raised his
- 6:57Speaker 2: voice to the crowd and said, You all know that
- 7:00Speaker 2: Jews are not supposed to associate or build friendships with
- 7:03Speaker 2: anybody from another nation. However, God has recently showed me
- 7:07Speaker 2: that I am not to call anyone unclean or common,
- 7:10Speaker 2: even Gentiles. So Peter ate with them and exchanged stories
- 7:14Speaker 2: about who Jesus was and what he was sent to do.
- 7:18Speaker 2: Cornelius and his family gathered around Peter, listening. Peter laughed
- 7:22Speaker 2: and cried as he told stories of Jesus' kindness, compassion, strength,
- 7:27Speaker 2: and even humor. It was not before long that every
- 7:31Speaker 2: person in Cornelius' house came to believe in Christ. The
- 7:35Speaker 2: Holy Spirit moved like rushing waves over the Gentiles that night.
- 7:39Speaker 2: Signs and wonders were done among them. Even more, their
- 7:42Speaker 2: whole world view began to shift and change. They believed
- 7:45Speaker 2: in God for their city and their community. They sought
- 7:49Speaker 2: the gifts of the Spirit and experienced the full weight
- 7:52Speaker 2: of His glory upon them. The whole household of Cornelius
- 7:55Speaker 2: was baptized, and they began to change the community with
- 7:58Speaker 2: their deeds. This was the beginning of a new wave
- 8:01Speaker 2: of God's majesty. It was promised thousands of years ago
- 8:05Speaker 2: that through the seed of Abraham all nations would be blessed.
- 8:09Speaker 2: Jesus was that seed. Through him, all nations would be
- 8:13Speaker 2: able to come to God. Not just one specific group,
- 8:16Speaker 2: but every culture and nation under the sun. God would
- 8:19Speaker 2: work in and through the Gentiles. As a result, every
- 8:23Speaker 2: nation on earth would know the name of Christ.
- 8:31Speaker 3: As we open today's reading, we are introduced to a
- 8:34Speaker 3: man named Cornelius. He was a centurion, a commander in
- 8:38Speaker 3: the Roman army. Although he was a Gentile, we are
- 8:42Speaker 3: told that Cornelius was a God-fearing man. He was earnestly
- 8:46Speaker 3: seeking the Lord and living out the Christlike principles of
- 8:50Speaker 3: prayer and even caring for the poor. And so one
- 8:53Speaker 3: night as he slept, God sent an angel to him
- 8:56Speaker 3: in a vision saying God had seen his devotion and
- 8:59Speaker 3: generosity and was pleased with him. So the angel gave
- 9:03Speaker 3: him specific instructions to send for a man named Peter
- 9:07Speaker 3: who was at Joppa. You see, though Cornelius was seeking
- 9:10Speaker 3: God and showed religious devotion, he was still not in
- 9:15Speaker 3: a relationship with the one true God through Jesus Christ.
- 9:18Speaker 3: He needed to hear the gospel and follow Jesus. And
- 9:22Speaker 3: although the angel could bring a word from God, he
- 9:25Speaker 3: could not preach the gospel. This is an opportunity and
- 9:28Speaker 3: a task given to Christians. It is our calling and
- 9:31Speaker 3: it is our privilege as believers to to be witnesses
- 9:35Speaker 3: and to share the good news of eternal life with
- 9:37Speaker 3: people who need to know the Lord. And so when
- 9:40Speaker 3: he awoke, Cornelius did as the angel had told him
- 9:43Speaker 3: to do and sent two men to find Peter. As
- 9:47Speaker 3: we soon discover, God had two purposes in sending for Peter.
- 9:51Speaker 3: He would work through Peter to share the good news
- 9:54Speaker 3: of Jesus with Cornelius, and he would use Cornelius to
- 9:58Speaker 3: show Peter that God's grace and salvation is meant not
- 10:02Speaker 3: only for the Jews, but to Gentiles as well, for
- 10:05Speaker 3: the whole world. The next day, as Cornelius' men were
- 10:09Speaker 3: headed to find Peter, we hear that Peter was very hungry,
- 10:13Speaker 3: and as he prayed on the rooftop, God put him
- 10:16Speaker 3: in some kind of a trance. God sent him a
- 10:19Speaker 3: vision of of a sheep descending from the heavens, filled
- 10:22Speaker 3: with animals of all kinds. These were animals considered unclean
- 10:26Speaker 3: by Jewish law. And then a voice told Peter to rise, kill,
- 10:30Speaker 3: and eat. But Peter protested, affirming that he had never
- 10:34Speaker 3: defiled himself with unclean or common things. The same voice
- 10:39Speaker 3: spoke again, saying, What God has called clean do not
- 10:42Speaker 3: call unclean or common. Three times Peter heard this voice
- 10:47Speaker 3: say the same thing. Once again, it seems Peter needed
- 10:50Speaker 3: something to be said three times to get through to him,
- 10:53Speaker 3: just as Jesus had told him three times to feed
- 10:56Speaker 3: my sheep. God is now showing Peter that there is
- 11:00Speaker 3: a new reality and that everyone can have a relationship
- 11:03Speaker 3: with Jesus. God wasn't speaking just about food. It was
- 11:06Speaker 3: much bigger than that. It was about faith and how
- 11:09Speaker 3: to know Christ. As Peter sat there trying to understand
- 11:13Speaker 3: what he had just experienced, who should come into the
- 11:16Speaker 3: house but the men Cornelius had sent? God's Spirit spoke
- 11:20Speaker 3: to Peter, saying that they had been sent there by
- 11:23Speaker 3: the Lord and that Peter was to go with them.
- 11:26Speaker 3: So Peter went to the men and told them that
- 11:28Speaker 3: he was the one they were looking for. And they
- 11:30Speaker 3: told him all about Cornelius and his vision and their
- 11:33Speaker 3: reason for coming. Peter invited the men in as guests
- 11:36Speaker 3: to stay the night. This is significant, as we already
- 11:40Speaker 3: see Peter's perspective on Gentiles being changed. The next day
- 11:44Speaker 3: they left for the home of Cornelius, and when they arrived,
- 11:48Speaker 3: The man was thrilled, so much so that he fell
- 11:51Speaker 3: at Peter's feet to worship him. If this was the
- 11:54Speaker 3: man God had sent to him, surely he was worthy
- 11:56Speaker 3: of worship. But, of course, Peter refused to be worshipped.
- 11:59Speaker 3: He lifted him up and said, I'm just a man.
- 12:02Speaker 3: Cornelius had gathered his family and many others to hear
- 12:05Speaker 3: what Peter had to say. And as Peter stood there,
- 12:08Speaker 3: he explained what he was doing in sharing Christ and
- 12:12Speaker 3: that it was beyond anything that he had been taught
- 12:14Speaker 3: as a Jew. They were not to associate with foreigners
- 12:18Speaker 3: in this way, Peter said. But then he told them
- 12:21Speaker 3: that God had shown him that he should not consider
- 12:24Speaker 3: anyone outside the grace and the love of God. So
- 12:27Speaker 3: in Acts 10, 34-35, Peter says this, Truly I understand
- 12:33Speaker 3: that God shows no partiality, but in every nation anyone
- 12:36Speaker 3: who fears him and does what is right is acceptable
- 12:39Speaker 3: to him. Peter was beginning to understand the fullness of
- 12:43Speaker 3: the gospel, that Jesus came to free the whole world
- 12:46Speaker 3: of sin, to forgive all who would trust in him,
- 12:49Speaker 3: to make all things new, that Jesus is not just
- 12:52Speaker 3: for the Jews, but for the Jews, the Gentiles, and
- 12:56Speaker 3: the whole world. Peter then shared the gospel with his
- 12:59Speaker 3: house full of Gentiles, telling them about Jesus and how
- 13:03Speaker 3: he had died and risen from the grave in order
- 13:05Speaker 3: to bring salvation to all who would trust in him.
- 13:08Speaker 3: As he spoke, The Holy Spirit fell upon all those
- 13:11Speaker 3: who heard the word. Peter's Jewish companions who had come
- 13:14Speaker 3: along were amazed, seeing that God's Spirit was not limited
- 13:18Speaker 3: to Jews, but also is now being poured out on Gentiles.
- 13:22Speaker 3: It was a new era for the church. The gospel
- 13:24Speaker 3: has been unleashed and it is unstoppable. Men and women
- 13:28Speaker 3: from every tongue and every nation can now know that
- 13:31Speaker 3: Jesus is Lord and discover new life in Him. Let's
- 13:35Speaker 3: pray together. Dear God, how we thank you for this
- 13:39Speaker 3: passage of scripture that reminds us just how much you
- 13:43Speaker 3: love the world, that there is not a person in
- 13:45Speaker 3: this world that you do not love. We know that
- 13:48Speaker 3: we have all sinned and broken your commandments, and yet
- 13:51Speaker 3: you've demonstrated your love toward us, and that while we
- 13:54Speaker 3: were yet sinners, you died on the cross for us
- 13:57Speaker 3: and rose again so that we could be forgiven and
- 14:00Speaker 3: be set free from the power of sin and death
- 14:02Speaker 3: in our lives. So Lord, we praise you for this.
- 14:05Speaker 3: And may we be witnesses of this truth. Lord, help
- 14:10Speaker 3: us to go in your name and tell others of
- 14:14Speaker 3: Jesus who is powerful to save. For it is in
- 14:17Speaker 3: his name that we pray. Amen. Thank you for listening
