- 0:18Hello, and welcome to Gatesleepers, the pop culture game show that shines a
- 0:22red nose light onto everyone's favorite fandoms. I'm your game's master and Eastern European
- 0:28cryptid, invented to scare sixteenth century children into behaving. Matt Watson Crampus,
- 0:33I'm Crampis. Oh, but of course we couldn't play these games without our
- 0:39fantastic players, a cast member lineup so star studied. I'm thinking of putting
- 0:44them all on top of a Christmas tree. Ooh and yeah, I mean
- 0:51it depends where, it depends where. Okay's threat it is now, don't
- 0:58lose. Yes, we usually do prizes, but this time there will be
- 1:04There will be a punishment, a very festive punishment. And you've you've caught
- 1:08onto the game already. As I introduced each of our players, they're going
- 1:12to name their favorite festive foods to eat around this time of year. So
- 1:18first team, to my metaphysical rights, we have the team of the Scrumptious
- 1:22Jason Newin, Hello, scrumptious, what's your favorite festive food? I'm Vinamese
- 1:27American and I'm gonna I'm gonna, I'm gonna teach I'm gonna educate the little
- 1:30kiddos and kiddies today. My favorite Christmas food is bun gun, which is
- 1:36a very party and thick, kind of like seafood stew. The only reason
- 1:42that it's my favorite is Chinese Americans have like this tradition of making potstickers around
- 1:47the table with their elders and so and so forth. We don't have that.
- 1:51I My version of that was making like rice starch noodles with my grandma
- 1:57and grandpa. Okay, my grandpa having since passed, so like it's important
- 2:02to me that that tradition continues, just because, like for the other cousins
- 2:06that I have, I don't know how long they'll have that traditional grandma.
- 2:08And it's always fun because it's painful. It's not it's not fun is funny
- 2:14show? Remember we've already mentioned a dead grandma. My favorite thing about Christmas
- 2:24is pain, spreading that joy to others and making sure that they accept that
- 2:30as a reality. Life is pain. Yeah. What what was that food
- 2:34again? Bun gun? Bun gun? Yeah? Nice? Are you gonna
- 2:37make some this year for us? I? Could you could accept your vegetarians?
- 2:43Ne mind? Then name of the holidays? You want to break that
- 2:46that moral No, No, that's that's that's no, that's my fault.
- 2:50That's ok And joining Jason from Geek Exploration the Podcast, It's the delicious Ben
- 2:55Robinson. Hey there, Hello, Ben. What's your favorite festive food?
- 3:00My favorite festive food is probably eggnog? Egg knock. I'm still not one
- 3:08hundred on what eggnog is. I'm not gonna lie to you. I'm still
- 3:13not. It's like cream and spices and raw eggs. Okay, I don't
- 3:19know if that makes you. I mean, at least I can eat it.
- 3:22It's vegetarian friendly, I suppose, but sound for vaulting, so animals
- 3:27don't count until until they can walk. Huh yep, all right, it's
- 3:32fair, Jason. Ben, it's great to have you here. Welcome.
- 3:37Well, thank you for having us, Thanks, thanks for putting us together.
- 3:39We're gonna win, Ben, it's gonna be great. Oh yeah,
- 3:42we're gonna win. Christmas nice And to my metaphysical left, we have the
- 3:47team of the mouthwatering Ordra Stephenson. Okay, they're all food descriptive words.
- 3:55My favorite Christmas food. I've been thinking about this since you mentioned it.
- 4:00I have no clue what to say other than mashed potatoes. That's solid though,
- 4:06that's my favorite food of all all the time, and so it doesn't
- 4:12feel special enough to be like my favorite Christmas food. So like I don't
- 4:15know, spiced cookies. Okay, yes, spiced cookies, very nice,
- 4:18very nice, good choice, but deep down it is just it is actually
- 4:23it's actually potatoes. Fine. Yeah, and joining Audra his debut novel Thane
- 4:28is available now. It's the finger licking Aaron Randolph scrumptious. Yes, hello,
- 4:39sorry, I was busy licking my fingers. Oh sorry. Do you
- 4:46have a favorite festive food, aarrein? I do. For me, I
- 4:50think it's cranberry sauce. Honestly, I know it's not traditionally a Christmas thing,
- 4:58and for me specifically, it's the cranberry jelly inside those cans that you
- 5:02get for like forty nine cents before the holiday and like nineteen cents after,
- 5:09just because And I don't have anything against I don't want anything against turkey,
- 5:13but to me, it's like the paper of meats. It's just very bland,
- 5:17and I just I need something to spice it up. And for me,
- 5:20I just love that cranberry sauce with the turkey. I think it makes
- 5:25a great combination and I really enjoy it. So that's probably it as far
- 5:30as holiday themed foods go. That's a good answer. I myself murdered about
- 5:35five of those canned cranberry saucies of a Thanksgiving That's amazing. You can just
- 5:41spoon them out, just the way people talk about peanut. But that's how
- 5:46I feel about cranberry sauce. You know what, a peanut butter and cranberry
- 5:48sauce sandwich sounds pretty good. We'll try it near the holidays. What is
- 5:57cranberry sauce but cranberry jelly? I would I would definitely try it with the
- 6:00sauce with the actual berries. Yeah yeah, yes, like a bit of
- 6:05a boogie one. Make it a bespoke peanut butter and cranberry Look a festive
- 6:11sandwich. Maybe that's our collective favorite food, gately special? All right,
- 6:17now I bade myself hungry. Hello, players, are you ready for a
- 6:21series of games about something that used to be a period of religious observance but
- 6:27it's now this sort of mass hallucination Based on Charles Dickens books and Macy's Windows
- 6:31displays, yeah, man, Oh my god. Yes, yes, I'm
- 6:35always down for a mass hallucination. Hell yeah, but I'm down for Christmas.
- 6:43Yeah. So I'm going to ask up top to everyone and anyone whoever
- 6:46wants to chime in first, who here loves Christmas time? And who are
- 6:50here is a grumbly little grinch? I love Christmas. I'm one of those
- 6:56people though, where I do know, I'm very aware. I'm a people
- 7:00pleaser. I'm aware that some people don't love Christmas energy, and so I
- 7:05do tone down my Christmas energy in my day to day life. But all
- 7:12day working today I had a fireplace thing open on YouTube with the Christmas music.
- 7:17If no one's booked the conference room, I will book the conference room
- 7:20and I will put it up on the big screen. Why nice, Like
- 7:25it is Christmas time? Wow in the twenty first century. In the twenty
- 7:28first century, they don't let me start fires in the office, not since
- 7:31twenty nineteen. So nice. What about you, Jason, you big big
- 7:36Christmas guy? Yeah, man, I am such a big Christmas guy.
- 7:40Me and Madre used to work together in a very small, confined space where
- 7:44we play Christmas music a lot, and I pistol out a lot of people
- 7:46off. I've been going to therapy a lot lately, and let me tell
- 7:49you, it's saving me the Christmas spirit learning. There's been some stressful things
- 7:55happening in my life, and they've been less stressful because Christmas is happy.
- 7:59Yet, you know, I mean if this can be applied all year round,
- 8:01If like you went to a depressive phase in April, can you just
- 8:05put like, God, this March is really fucking rough. How need to
- 8:11give myself a coke? Time for a delicious cranberry and peanut butter. Okay,
- 8:20we go, Well in the studio, we got we got two Christmas
- 8:22people. Ben, what about yourself? Are you you a Christmas man?
- 8:26I mean compared to them, I'm probably a grinch. I've certainly been called
- 8:30a grinch before. Like I love Christmas for about five to seven days,
- 8:37you know, like like you get into Christmas like all right, it's you
- 8:41know, it's December twentieth. I'm ready for Christmas music. I mean the
- 8:43spirit. It's great. We can drive around look at Christmas lights, but
- 8:48when it starts pre Thanksgiving, I'm a Christmas person and that's sacrilet. Yeah,
- 8:56I can't do Christmas music all month long, because it's just it's not
- 9:01that good, Like it's so bad Christmas music kind of sucks. Yeah,
- 9:07it's why I like a little of it because it's so bad. That's very
- 9:09samey. But but I mean, like I really did Christmas for like the
- 9:13week before Christmas. Okay, nice, nice, And look this episode will
- 9:18go out roughly within those magical twelve days. So yes, this is this
- 9:20is suitable Christmas time to be merry and bright. I'm just gonna have to
- 9:24fake it for tonight. Yeah, and we can appreciate it. And Aaron,
- 9:31what about yourself? You a Christmas guy, I am probably the grinchiest
- 9:35person here. Interesting. Christmas sends me into a state of anxiety, so
- 9:41I just kind of I just kind of survive it, like I just try
- 9:46and get through it. And then I'm kind of the opposite of Ben in
- 9:50that my favorite time is the day, Like the day of Christmas is usually
- 9:54amazing, but the week after is like my favorite week all year, just
- 10:00is the solid week of post Christmas where everybody just everybody kind of relaxes and
- 10:03everything starts coming back to North Fel and I start feeling like myself again.
- 10:09That that is why I'm sort of grinchy in that I don't handle I don't
- 10:16handle the stress of the season very well. I am a horrible gift giver,
- 10:22like, or at least that's what I think of myself. So like,
- 10:26it's such a nightmare trying to get the appropriate thing for and how much
- 10:30do you spend on this person as opposed to this person, as opposed to
- 10:33this person? Mom, Sorry, you're just getting a gift card this year.
- 10:39It's a nightmare and I long for it to end or death, whichever
- 10:43comes first. I love having a mix of Christmas eye yea. I will
- 10:52say, though, Aaron, having the week after Christmas, which is the
- 10:56last week of the year, being your favorite week of the whole year,
- 10:58really practicing edging all you're really hoping right before the year heads, it's gonna
- 11:05be amazed. This is it, This is it, This is the best
- 11:09I do. Get that thing of everybody calms the fuck down. Yeah,
- 11:13yeah, we got. We tamp down on the gift giving anxiety in my
- 11:18family for the last like decade. We just all the adults now just uh
- 11:22we picked names and you only have to buy presents for that one person.
- 11:26That's dope. Yeah, that's smart. That's smart. Yes, you don't
- 11:30have to. I don't have my fifteen presents every year. I'll just buy
- 11:33one for one of the people, and the kids eventually when they turn eighteen,
- 11:35graduate into Yeah. Yeah, that's fair. That's incredible. Ben,
- 11:46You're making me want to lick my fingers again. Okay, Teams, twas
- 11:52the night before Christmas and a games Master you must appease, so come up
- 11:56with a team name, one for each pad, please, Jason and Ben,
- 12:01would you like to offer a festive team name? I was unclear whether
- 12:07this was a full Christmas episode or just Christmas movies, but I thought of
- 12:11two team names based on two Christmas movies I was watching. One is the
- 12:18cotton Headed Mini Muggins. Okay that rings a bell? Yeah? El?
- 12:26And then the Big Bees, which is me and Matt's favorite moment from from
- 12:30Santa Claus. It was a big big It was a big bee. It's
- 12:33a big bee. Ben, Have you got any ideas for a festive team
- 12:39name? I mean, like in general, I was going thing in more
- 12:43general Christmas. Uh. One of mine was the Eggnoggers because as I mentioned,
- 12:48I love nice or the festive balls, just just for adic. Yeah,
- 12:56the festive balls I like. I like both of them. I don't
- 12:58like eggnog that much. It's the egg part. It's not the taste.
- 13:03It's not so much the nog. No, no, nothing. I love
- 13:05the nog. But I like being called an egg nagger. Ah okay,
- 13:11yeah, so happy to be an eg knaka Yeah okay. It sounds like
- 13:13a slur that elves would use, right, and that makes it better for
- 13:20you. I don't understand. I do not understand. Yeah, you won't
- 13:24drink a dairy alcoholic beverage, but you you will. You enjoy u slut.
- 13:31Okay, So we have the egg knoggers, but let's find out who
- 13:35they'll be facing, Aaron. Since we both feel that we're terrible at giving
- 13:41gifts, I was thinking something could be done with that gifting grenches. That
- 13:48was as far as I got. That's good. That was as far as
- 13:50I got. That's good. Yeah. So I initially thought, I,
- 13:56like Jason, I thought this was going to be more about Christmas movies than
- 13:58just Christmas in general. So I was thinking a lot about like icons of
- 14:03Christmas movies, And I've always thought that there is this vastly under underserved uh
- 14:11niche out there of people who are dying for a certain product that that have
- 14:15never gotten it. Thanks to the Christmas Story, you know, the leg
- 14:18lamp became very, very popular. But it's always been it's always it's always
- 14:24been a lady's leg. And I'm like, why not make a male leg
- 14:28lamp? And I think we could call ourselves the Male leg Lamp Millionaires or
- 14:35mll M for short, as a majorly positive reaction from Oji. Yes,
- 14:41I'm looking forward to now. So the male leg lamp Millionaires. Yes,
- 14:52there's there's a there's there's a whole fetish group out there just waiting for this
- 14:58product and they'll pay whatever you ask. Yeah, the Christmas Story did a
- 15:07lot for like furniture made out of like human parts, after the Nazis gave
- 15:13it such a bad name. Christmas Story was like, yeah, Merry Christmas
- 15:18everyone, first Nazi reference, Oh my god, first Nazi. So on
- 15:24the male leg lamp. Would the light bulb be a testicle? Yeah,
- 15:28there would be two. It wouldn't have like a dimmer switch. You just
- 15:33switch which light Bobby eased one for off. Yeah, all right, And
- 15:41if you're listening to this and thinking ding dong, merrily on what the fuck
- 15:46is happening? Don't worry his order with a little segment we like to call
- 15:50passing no ho ho ho ho ho lych. Like most things in the meta
- 15:58modern age, the Christmas we know today has been around since about the eighties,
- 16:04but people celebrating something during the darkest weeks of the year has been around
- 16:08for almost as long as we have. From the Neolithic times all the way
- 16:14to what my parents would call the pagan heretic devil times, humanity celebrated the
- 16:19winter solstice across the world. It was important for people to gather together in
- 16:25the coldest months to share food in order to stay warm, you know,
- 16:30exactly like it is today. Then the Abrahamic festivals arrived Hanukkah a touch more
- 16:37peacefully than Christmas. But it's the holidays, so let's not talk about the
- 16:41crusades, the genocide, or the papal dogma. The important thing is that
- 16:47by the end of the first millennium, the holidays were a time connected to
- 16:52strict religious observants, well except for the powerful who ate hogs, while everybody
- 16:59else starved to death, you know, exactly like it is today. Fast
- 17:03forward to post Renaissance Europe, and we're starting to get traditions such as caroling,
- 17:08gift giving, indoor trees, and the first ever Christmas special episode slash
- 17:15novel, a Christmas Carol. An emphasis was also put on charity during this
- 17:19time, as wealth inequality was its highest in a century thanks to unregulated industrialization.
- 17:27You know exactly like it is today. The twentieth century saw the arrival
- 17:33of most of our contemporary traditions, Christmas movies, secular holiday music, and
- 17:38even the modern version of Santa. So if you learn anything from this holiday
- 17:44passing knowledge, it's that everything is a story that we've either told or we're
- 17:48about to tell, and perhaps something more important than following tradition is making sure
- 17:55you can create new ones. So with that in mind, let's look to
- 18:00the twenty second century, when everyone will be holding their annual gate Leapers holiday
- 18:07game show from the comfort of their simulation battery pods as their correct answers fuel
- 18:14our ai Overlord's you know exactly like it is today. Marry everyone, Thank
- 18:22you Audra. Now, just before we get to today's games, I've asked
- 18:26each player to bring in a muse, something that inspires them or something they
- 18:30love from this fandom, which is Christmas, all of Christmas, or actually
- 18:33all of the holidays, to be honest, anything related to November or December.
- 18:37Really. Oh, we will start with Jason. What's inspiring you my?
- 18:41I think my attachment to Christmas. My earliest Christmas memory, my favorite
- 18:47Christmas memory ever is like we immigrated to America in nineteen ninety five. I
- 18:51was born in nineteen ninety six, so I was very much on the tail
- 18:53end of them assimilating and learning how to be American while I was like fully
- 18:59blooded a my American. And the earliest Christmas memory I have is we brought
- 19:03my grandfather's mom over from Vietnam to America to like experience American Christmas and the
- 19:11capitalism and all that and what that meant and for like them coming out of
- 19:15post Vietnam War Vietnam, that was like fucking ginormous. That was like,
- 19:19look at all this capitalism, look at all this opportunity, look at how
- 19:23amazing this is. And that's that's my favorite memory ever. She had black
- 19:29teeth, she smoked a ton, she lived, so she's like ninety nine.
- 19:33She was a crazy, badass woman, And I love Christmas out of
- 19:37me. Yeah. Nice, I mean I don't know how to add a
- 19:41witty comment after that. Yeah, it's just sentimental. Yeah, it's just
- 19:47so. That's a that's a merry Christmas memory. Yeah, lovely stuff.
- 19:51Let's let's move over to your teammates, Ben, what's your Christmas meus?
- 19:53Oh? My Christmas news is my favorite Christmas movie of all time that I
- 19:59talked with that about last year, but turns out I didn't fucking record it,
- 20:06and that would be a Muppet Christmas Carol. I watch it. Yes,
- 20:11it is the best Christmas movie. Yeah it is. I said it
- 20:14on that lost recording. It's the correct answer, it's the right answer.
- 20:18It's the only answer. Yeah, Muppets Christmas Carol is the best. I
- 20:22was tempted just to make this entire episode of gate Leapers about Uppets Christmas.
- 20:27Michael Caine is playing. It's so straight the whole time. Masterful, masterful,
- 20:33incredible, set the precedent for Guy and then a bunch of Muppets the
- 20:41benchmark. Fantastic mus Ben, fantastic movie. So we do still have Christmas
- 20:47movies coming up throughout the games. I don't want to say that there's absolutely
- 20:51no no movie trivia coming up. Okay, let's move on over to male
- 20:56leg lamp. What have I written here? Millionaires? I read my goal
- 21:03in life is to constantly come up with more and more convoluted team names.
- 21:07Just math's life, Hell's working. I'm going to now disclose that after not
- 21:15really drinking for the last six months, I've had a peppermint schnapps raring to
- 21:22go and I'm unable to read words like millionaires. All right, Aaron,
- 21:26what's what is your Christmas muse? What inspires you from Christmas? I mean,
- 21:33my probably favorite thing about Christmas and it's just it's just something uh,
- 21:38my family has done every single year since I was very little and still continue
- 21:45to do as grown ass adults, is when it comes time for Christmas,
- 21:48like we we all get together or you know, when I lived in my
- 21:52parents would come down first thing in the morning, and you know I would
- 21:56I would be a busy little bee and I'd sort the presence by who got
- 22:00who, so everybody had their own pile as opposed to the chaos of just
- 22:04a pile under the tree. Because I was an organized little I get him.
- 22:11But when my parents did come down, you know, we still had
- 22:15to wait for them to get coffee and all this other stuff before we could
- 22:18actually open presence. But they would let us start with the stockings, you
- 22:25know, so we didn't. We didn't. We weren't sitting there waiting forever
- 22:27for mom and dad to fully wake up. So getting to go through the
- 22:30stockings early and seeing all the cool little things that you know, my dad
- 22:34picked up at the dollar store or whatever, you know, just tiny little
- 22:38fun things, you know, sometimes useful stuff like you know, like a
- 22:41deodorant or you know, cologne. In what I feel was a very pointed
- 22:45personal statement, but also you know, fun stuff like chocolates and tiny little
- 22:52toys and things and other stuff. And I just thoroughly enjoy going through the
- 22:56stocking every year. Yeah, there's there's nothing quite like that, the feeling
- 23:03of just going through that and just feeling like the warmth of like we're about
- 23:07to have the you know, the Christmas opening. Everybody's just just getting awake
- 23:11and Christmas is starting to fully descend on me. And that's I think when
- 23:15I get the full Christmas experiences right there. Yeah, that's amazing. Underrated.
- 23:22The stock is, yeah, definitely, oh, definitely stocking based presence.
- 23:25The idea of everything is contained in this big sock and you get all
- 23:30the kids get a little hit of sugar right before everyone wakes up, just
- 23:33to you know, amp the energy up with there any anyone, I guess
- 23:40I'll open this to everyone, but Aaron especially anything like traditional quote unquote that
- 23:44was like always in a stocking every year, like this is this is without
- 23:48failing the stocking. Like for me, satsuma was always one of the things,
- 23:52just a little little orange. Because I was about to say, could
- 23:55you explain that for the American a tiny that's very British thing is a tiny
- 24:02orange. Yeah. Yeah, For me, they were all small things.
- 24:07But as I grew older and my dad would start to put slightly more expensive
- 24:12things in. But it's still small things, but things that he thought were
- 24:15like important, like he would have a like a little tool set in the
- 24:22stocking one year that I still use today, and like a Swiss army knife
- 24:29like I got one, you know, So I did really dig when he
- 24:33started putting things in that I would grow to use quite often. So it
- 24:37was deeply appreciated by me at least. Yeah, but no, nothing nothing
- 24:42constant, nothing regular, like nothing specific. I was I think that's better.
- 24:45It's it's more exciting that way, I think. Yeah, I feel
- 24:48yeah, absolutely, I got a chocolate orange stocking. Yeah, and orange
- 24:56based stockings. Yeah, I'm sure. I just feel like my parents are
- 25:02the type of people that there was a really intense method that if we didn't
- 25:07hit all of the beats of the stocking, then my dad would have a
- 25:11rough time, like it would be like I feel like, yeah, I
- 25:14cannot remember what they would be, but I just feel like in my house
- 25:17there is a method to the stockings that I missed for eighteen years, mostly
- 25:22chocolate orange chocolate, Randy Caine bullets to shoot vomits on the phone. Honestly,
- 25:33there was a Nancy Drew style puzzle in the stock never saw it.
- 25:37I never saw it. Yeah, Stockings, shout out to Stockings. Fantastic
- 25:42music, Audra, round us out. What's what's your Christmas muse? My
- 25:48Christmas muse. The thing that is inspiring me, driving me forward is fear,
- 25:56as you know. Hear me out, hear me out. I do
- 26:02have a fear of birds. I had it before it was cool to have
- 26:04a fear of birds. We raised chickens and turkeys and geese, and they
- 26:07were mean as hell. So in the twelve Days of Christmas, there's so
- 26:14many birds, but there are a few of them that are suspiciously not birds.
- 26:19Yes, golden rings birds, I think like that's the thing, like,
- 26:23it's all birds. That's the fucking thing that I was to well yesterday
- 26:30years old when I found out golden rings. That's a fucking bird. Lord's
- 26:33a leaping, that's a fucking bird. Ladies dance, ladies dancing. There's
- 26:37a type of bird that was popular at the time. You know how male
- 26:38birds tend to do like a dance to like impress whatever. There's a bird
- 26:42they found about that time where the female does the dance. There's no but
- 26:48it's the play pipe. A piper was a type of bird. What I
- 26:55can't remember. I can't remember the distinct thing about it. Maybe it makes
- 26:57a sound, I don't know. There all what about don't famously don't produce
- 27:06milk? Don't know what that happen? Was famously one hole. But they're
- 27:15all birds, rule them all. And by the end of the twelve Days
- 27:21of Chris Christmas, you get one hundred and eighty four fucking birds. My
- 27:26nightmare and I will be running towards the safety. That is my muse is
- 27:33too many birds a good muse. And I also didn't know that until now
- 27:38you had one person on each team that knew that they were all birds.
- 27:42Yeah, that's so two people who've raised I mean, I just assumed that
- 27:51all the birds that were given were dead. I assumed. I assume the
- 27:59turtle doves were free eating. Like I didn't think. You know, here's
- 28:03a bird, here's another bird, here's another bird. You're gonna need some
- 28:07cages, sweetheart. I'm not providing the cages. They will be transported to
- 28:12you in cages, but I am going to reuse those cages for the next
- 28:17days birds. All right, you're gonna have to hear it. It might
- 28:21have just been their feathers. They were real big on putting fancy feathers on
- 28:23all kinds of stuff. Oh yeah, so maybe they were just gonna Okay,
- 28:30no, I want to eat one of those dancing guys. All right,
- 28:34right, teams, I think we're feeling suitably inspired, So let's brate
- 28:38our reindeers by listing their names aggressively, one by one and fly. It's
- 28:44around one on Dancer, Prancer and Dave, Chad Ronnie Round one is called
- 29:11Christmas Fakes. It's our classic five three to two game of deliberation, elimination
- 29:17and deception, but now with fifty more tinsel. In turn, I will
- 29:22give our teams a category related to festive media and a list of five items
- 29:26from said category. It's then up to our teams to carefully pick which three
- 29:30they think are real for a possible three points. But if they choose one
- 29:36of the fake answers, they'll be frozen out of the list, like Jack
- 29:40Frost nipping at yours whatever Jack Frost does at your hose, at your hose.
- 29:48Ah. Okay, and your first category, there'll be a list for
- 29:51each team. Your first category is Hallmark Movies, key movies from the mass
- 29:59Hallmark can and there's a lot of them. Where's recurring player Jen Reagan movies
- 30:03I actively avoid. Yeah, and there's some interesting titles here. So we
- 30:08will start with the Eggnoggers. Let's let's begin with Jason and Ben. Here
- 30:12we go. Here is your list of five and you know what, because
- 30:15it's Christmas. After I've read them all, if you want the tagline for
- 30:18the movie, I can give you the tag line as well. Wow,
- 30:22Okay, here's your list of five, Mingle all the Way, A Big
- 30:26Fat Family Christmas, Sammy Clause is Coming to Town, Murder She Baked a
- 30:33Plum Pudding, Mystery, and Finding Rudolph. Some of these are amazing.
- 30:38I mean, right off the bat, I want to say finding Rudolph that
- 30:41one sounds really familiar. And Mingle all the Ways gotta be one. Okay,
- 30:45Well at Hallmark, like, I mean, that's like low hanging fruit.
- 30:48That's right up there alley. If they haven't, Matt needs to get
- 30:53a job writing Hallmark Christmas movies. Yeah, I I'm gonna go with a
- 31:00strong instinct. The only question is what are you eating? Jason? I'm
- 31:03sorry. I thought it was going to take longer, so I shoved the
- 31:06present. It's Christmas. Are you gonna keep that in? Yeah? Okay,
- 31:17okay, sorry, I I think I agree with you with ming all
- 31:22the Way. I think we'll go with that one first. Then try finding
- 31:25Rudolf because you've seem way more confident on Mingo all the Way. All right,
- 31:27go and Mingle all the Way. Yeah, Yes, Mingle all the
- 31:30Way is real nice. Absolutely it is. From a few years ago,
- 31:34a dating app developer finds love in her small town. That's the plot to
- 31:41all of them. Just change job title and then that's that's it. Yeah.
- 31:45Yeah, ladies, this holiday season, there's going to be someone in
- 31:48your hometown who's gonna convince you to leave your job that you worked, yeah,
- 31:53for years to achieve. That's the whole Mark promise. Yeah, thinking
- 31:59solid money in a you love, he's going to convince you to come home.
- 32:02In that regard, is finding Rudolph another let's let's do that. Let's
- 32:08do it. You and straight for finding Rudolph. Yeah, Finding Rudolph is
- 32:13not real. I'm so sorry. Finding Rudolph is not real. Was the
- 32:15Plumb Mystery Diaries or whatever that was? Is that real? Yeah? That
- 32:19one was really. Yeah, but you're out of the list. You're frozen
- 32:22out the list. I'm sorry. We gotta watch that movie. I don't
- 32:24even care about the list. I want to watch that movie. Yeah.
- 32:29I mean, like, you didn't ask to hear any of the tag lines,
- 32:31but it's okay. They could extra clues for you. We had a
- 32:36big fat family. Christmas was real where the tag line is Christmas in Chinatown
- 32:39begins with a chang. No, genuinely real, Jesus, I'd certainly send
- 32:49that to a few charities. Like, honestly, there's like there's some hate
- 32:52going on there. Like I feel like that's wholemark actively being hateful. Oh
- 32:55yeah, Okay, what year was ninety four? It was twenty and twenty
- 33:02one. Oh fucking hell. Wow, that's crazy. Sammy claus Is coming
- 33:10to town was fake? That's I had the tagline for that. Santa's Hot
- 33:15niece looks for love in New York, but murder. She baked a plum
- 33:17pudding. Mystery is real. A bake to order business woman becomes a sleuth
- 33:22after a client is shot dead, shot dead. We're watching that this Christmas
- 33:29Christmas needs more murder in it. That's yeah, I think so Crampus was
- 33:34filling a need. Okay, let's have a list for the male leg Lamp
- 33:39Millionaires, the MLLM as I will now refer to them. Yes, okay,
- 33:46here is your list of five, and remember you can ask for the
- 33:49synopsis. You can ask for the tagline your list of five, Battle of
- 33:53the Bulbs, Miracle at Last Light Lodge, Christmas comes twice, Oh we
- 34:02wish you a puppy Christmas? And Honikah on rye. Oh no, I
- 34:13feel like we should get synopsis and taglines on all of these because I haven't
- 34:17got a clue any peque your interest, noney, none of them are jumping
- 34:22out of me. Can we go one by one? Yeah? Absolutely,
- 34:25So you've got Battle of the bulbs. Two middle aged men fight to have
- 34:29the best Christmas decorations. Miracle at Last. Light Lodge business owners rekindle their
- 34:35love by helping a young couple deliver their baby. In a modern day manger,
- 34:39Christmas Comes Twice, a thirty something lawyer from the big city travels back
- 34:44in time five years to get a fresh start on a life. We wish
- 34:47you a puppy Christmas. A family is overjoyed and overwhelmed when they have to
- 34:52take care of twelve puppies over the holidays, and Honikah on rye love is
- 34:57found between competing deli owners. Okay, can we agree right now that that
- 35:05one's fake? I think so. I don't know a big fat Christmas was
- 35:12Ye, I don't think. I don't think you can. Yeah, I
- 35:19really can see the like falling in love, delivering a baby and it's religious
- 35:23undertones. I can see that being real. Okay, I'll go with you
- 35:29on that Okay, fingers crossed that one. Miracle at Last Light Lodge.
- 35:35Yeah, I'm sorry, it's not real. It's fake. Oh, entirely
- 35:38made up. Yeah, I'm sure there is some movie like that out there,
- 35:44but not but not that one, Halemark and not that name the Bulbs.
- 35:47Battle of the Bulbs also feel feels real. Yeah, Battle of the
- 35:51Bulbs was real. Christmas Comes Twice, it was real. Say that one.
- 35:57Dang, I'm sorry, I went in. I went in hard.
- 36:00Okay, I figured Christmas Comes Twice was one of those tricks where you picked
- 36:02the name of a porno. Yeah, I think I've seen that. What
- 36:08that's a wholesome, Wholemark movie. Wholesome Okay? What was the was Christmas
- 36:14on Rye on right? Of course? Sorry, who's trying to distract from
- 36:19the porn? No, that one was real. On Rye is a real
- 36:22Wholemark movie. I think it's a few years old. I think it is
- 36:25around about twenty seventeen. This one so not quite as recently offensive. I
- 36:30just want to say, after the big fair Christmas one, yeah, you've
- 36:34got a free pest to almost any Yep. Hallmark does not give a fuck
- 36:39making movies exclusively for white people. Yep, Okay, we will have a
- 36:44new category, thank god. And that category is we're going to move to
- 36:46the silver screen. Now we're going to move to the small screen. It
- 36:51is Friends Holiday Episodes. Okay, so the title of Friends Holiday Episodes.
- 36:57Friends always go with the one with. So I'm gonna give you a list
- 37:00of the one with and then it's up to you to deliberate and decide.
- 37:04So back on over to the Eggnoggers. Here is your list of five.
- 37:07The one with the sad Christmas tree, the one with Christmas in Tulsa,
- 37:14the one with all the candy, the one with the monkey, and the
- 37:19one with the missing stripper. Uh. The one with all the candy is
- 37:24real because that's the one where Monica makes all her delicious little candy bites and
- 37:29our neighbors annoy the shit out of her. I'm gonna take your word for
- 37:30that. I know, look all about Friends. No, we're gonna go
- 37:36with that, please, Matt. It is absolutely true. Nice, but
- 37:38that exact synopsis, it absolutely is that excellent, excellent. Now there is
- 37:43a one with a monkey, there is the one with a missing stripper.
- 37:45I don't know, there's a lot of Christmas. Yeah, there's a lot
- 37:49of them with the monkey though, right, yeah, exactly exactly. I
- 37:52feel like Ross and whatever his capuchin's name is, they get reunited maybe one
- 37:57day at Christmas. So we're gonna go with the monkey. You're gonna go
- 38:00with the one with the monkey. Yeah, that is a Christmas episode the
- 38:04first series, the first ever Christmas episode. Oh wow, so not a
- 38:07reunite reunion, but that's okay. And then there's the one with a missing
- 38:10Stripper. The only episode that I can remember with a missing stripper is when
- 38:15Joey loses a ring because the stripper takes the ring. Oh, I know,
- 38:22if that's a Christmas episode, I mean it sounds pretty first the episode
- 38:29title though, that says the Christmas in the one with a Christmas in Tulsa.
- 38:34Though, that sounds familiar. That sounds like some kind of separation situation.
- 38:40So I'm gonna go with my gut and say the stripper is a herring
- 38:45and the Tulsa one is real. You're going with your Christmas gut if that's
- 38:49okay with you, Ben. It has the other than the Simpsons, it
- 38:57has the most Christmas TV episode. That fair, that's fair, But yes,
- 39:00your gut is absolutely correct. It is. Yeah, the missing stripper
- 39:04was a red herring referring to another episode. They're actually like three different Friends
- 39:07episodes with strippers, really, and then the Christmas Tree was and ye Phoebe's
- 39:13bachelorette party with Danny DeVito. Yeah, but congrats, the full points,
- 39:19good friends knowledge, Jason, good Christmas friends than you. I think I'm
- 39:22going to get one. That's more than I'm gonna get. Okay, here
- 39:29is that second list for male leg lamp millionaires, the one with all the
- 39:34resolutions, the one with the snowman on the roof, the one with the
- 39:38Holiday Armadillo, the one with the girl from Poughkeepsie, and the one with
- 39:45the three wise men. Okay, I'm gonna get two. Okay, the
- 39:50Holiday Armadillo. The Holiday Armidillo is correct. Yeah, Ross can't get a
- 39:57Santa costume that there's a there's a bar in our town where all of the
- 40:05servers are dressed up as Armadillo's. But it's not even like a friend's reference.
- 40:08It's just just where Armadillo cost that's where we're going for Christmas, called
- 40:12like the Armadillo Lounge or something like that. That is weird because we do
- 40:15have like themed speakeasies in our town. This is an armadilla anyway. I
- 40:22think that the other one that I know is the one with the girl from
- 40:25Poughkeepsie. You're happy to go with Aaron. My fear is that it might
- 40:38be a Thanksgiving episode, but the other one that comes to mind, and
- 40:43so I'm gonna I'm gonna do it. I'm gonna look, Thanksgiving is within
- 40:46the realm of festivity, so if it's a Thanksgiving episode, it was also
- 40:50listed as a Christmas episode. Nice. Yes, okay, it's absolutely correct.
- 40:54You got one more? Can you read me the remaining three? Yes,
- 40:59you have the one with all the resolutions, the one with the snowman
- 41:01on the roof, and the one with the three wise men I have.
- 41:07I have no clue at this point. I am going to go and I'm
- 41:13going to assume. Yeah, I'm gonna go with three wise men, and
- 41:20there's gonna be some situation in which it's ross Joey and Chandler are wise are
- 41:27for some reason they are three wise men. Summary. No, I'm so
- 41:32sorry. I'm so sorry. There's no reason, but that would make sense,
- 41:37though. Is it the one with all the resolutions? It is the
- 41:39one with all the yeah and yeah, there's not mine on the reef,
- 41:44not real either. There we go. We've done a little friends round.
- 41:46Now we don't have to do a friend's episode till season twelve. Nice.
- 41:52Okay, I got one final list. Hopefully, hopefully this one makes Angliphile
- 41:57Aaron a little happier. This list because this third and final list will be
- 42:02UK Christmas number ones. Which is this a huge thing in the UK about
- 42:07topping the Christmas charts with a with a hit single. So whoever is number
- 42:13one of the equivalent of the Billboard Top one hundred is enshrined for eternity as
- 42:17an official UK Christmas number one. And then there's like weird TV shows every
- 42:22year that are like, hey remember these interesting So why it's like number one
- 42:29on Christmas? Yes on Chris on Christmas Day? Who's at the top of
- 42:34the chart exactly? Okay? And I'll give the song and the artist and
- 42:37you've just got to, you know, decipher, try and understand the British
- 42:42mindset a little bit. So here we go. Here are the five singles,
- 42:45which three were UK number ones. And this list is for the Eggnoggers.
- 42:51I love Sausage Rolls by Lad Baby, Long Haired Lover from Liverpool by
- 42:57Jimmy Osmond, hell for by Goat Seamen, mister mister Blobby by mister Blobby
- 43:07and I'm so rich, They're so sad by fuck help. I'll just throw
- 43:17out thoughts. I'm not saying anything, I'm not solidifying anything. I'm just
- 43:22brainstorming here. Lad Baby. So the only thing I know about the UK
- 43:27and anything like that is lad Bible, I think is like a weird media
- 43:32page thing. So it stands to reason that lad Baby is maybe like a
- 43:37infantile version of that, something that's centric to like toddlers and things like baby
- 43:43Shark get really popular. So if it's more of like a kid centric song,
- 43:46maybe I love Sausage Rolls? Is that the song name? I just
- 43:51completely absolutely forgot that. They're all, yeah, I'm leaning hard towards uh
- 44:00was a goat Semen something like that? Hell Fucker by goat Semen. The
- 44:06British people have a way with irony. I feel like this would be a
- 44:09top I really hope that would because I would love to hear some posh lady
- 44:14on the BBC announced the Christmas Yeah, let's go strong let's start off this
- 44:20with strong. Can we put in goat Fuckers Semen head You're you're going with
- 44:24hell Fucker by Goat Semen. Yeah, as the as A UK Christmas number
- 44:29one. Yeah, that, as Ben has already pointed out, would have
- 44:30to be read out by someone at the BBC RP. We're starting strong,
- 44:36all right. Jingle bells, it's jingle wrong. I'm so sorry. Yeah,
- 44:47real, real band, real, uh, very nice. I believe
- 44:52it's actually an album, not a song, but oh no, did not
- 44:54make it. So mister Blobby is one of the ones. Mister Blobby was
- 44:58correct. Yeah, mister Blobby by Mists Bob held off On is not one
- 45:01either. That's the other thing. Yes, that that is based. That
- 45:05is a riff on the band Aid charity single that was part of the eighties
- 45:09pretending to do charity Maine people who is exactly Yeah? Yeah, but yeah,
- 45:15I love Sausage Raws by lad Baby. I don't think they're connected to
- 45:19lad Bible, but they are like a viral thing. They are like they've
- 45:22won like the last five years because they've utilized the Internet and everyone else doesn't.
- 45:27So sure. Longheaded Lover from Liverpool is real as well it was just
- 45:30back in the seventies, So there we go. We will move on to
- 45:36another list for male leg lamp millionaires. Here is five UK Christmas number ones.
- 45:43There's no one quite like Grandma by Saint Winifred's School Choir. Merry Christmas
- 45:49Everyone by Nobby Toppins, Can We Fix It? By Bob the Builder,
- 45:57Kissing and Drinking by Sir Cliff Richard and killing in the name by Rage against
- 46:01the Machine? Okay, there's one. I hope I'm right. There's one
- 46:07thing I know about Christmas number ones, Okay, and I'm going to broaden
- 46:13it before I even say protective. Sometimes there are protest ones, and I
- 46:21think there was a Rage against the Machine one that was a protest number one.
- 46:25Because it's always agree. I just don't know if it was Christmas,
- 46:30I but I would buy it. Yeah, you want to go for personally,
- 46:36I would go for the Cliff Richard one first because I believe that to
- 46:38be real. Okay, let's go for that one. Because the two that
- 46:44I think are real art Bob the Builder and the other one. Yeah,
- 46:49that's my instinct too, is those three. But I'm the most confident the
- 46:54one I'm the most confident is Cliff Richard. Let's go for someone drinking bicycle
- 47:00Cliff Richard. Yes, yes, I'm so sorry, it's not real.
- 47:07He did have a Christmas single. He had a single called Missle, Mistletoe
- 47:10and Wine. Wouldn't I have had their list? I knew all three of
- 47:16theirs were our second and third choice? Yeah? Correct, Yeah, what
- 47:24about those? The heartbreaking thing is that just you're ordering. And that's the
- 47:29tricksy thing about this game is you are absolutely right on the other two.
- 47:31Can you fix it? By Bob? The builder was a Christmas number one,
- 47:35and so was killing it the name it was a protest vote. It
- 47:37did happen at Christmas time. There's one Grandma also also correct. I should
- 47:45be more confident in my memory memory. First time this whole round, I
- 47:52actually knew something silly knew. It was very tricksy. Cliff Richard has had
- 48:00a Christmas number one, just not with kissing and drinking? How dare you?
- 48:05Yeah? I was waiting for you to pull Alexander Armstrong's song. Oh
- 48:09god, yeah, just because I know that was a I know he had
- 48:13a Christmas number one and it was a surprise to him. Yeah, yeah,
- 48:16because it was one of the They do like choir ones quite often,
- 48:20I think, and so I think he was part of the group or collective
- 48:22or something. Yeah, all right, that is the end of round one.
- 48:29Let's ask Santa to calculate the latest scores. Oh wait, spoiler alert,
- 48:35kids, Santa isn't real. Oh no, gee, It's a cultural
- 48:39myth invented by all the dads so they don't have to engage with emotion.
- 48:44Dropping little truth bombs just works like a charm. And those scores are It's
- 48:52it's not been a spectacular round for our teams. The male legg lamp millionaires
- 48:55are on two points and the eggnoggers are on four points. Okay, we're
- 49:00just full of Christmas spirit. Yeah, to be caring about points, that's
- 49:05true. We have all this useful knowledge, so the useless stuff doesn't help
- 49:09us. Christmas is giving us points. That's what it's about. That is.
- 49:16That is an excellent point you just made. But my sack is empty.
- 49:24Christmas came twice. The whole muk up next this round two. But
- 49:32first, some festive ads. They're just like regular ads, but they become
- 49:37festive if you jingle your bell while you listen to them. Round two.
- 49:45It's called Holiday fan Court. It's a festive version of our pop culture courtroom
- 49:51battle, as our teams must argue opposite sides of the same festive fandom statement.
- 49:55Because as we all know, every problem humanity is ever faced has been
- 50:00solved by debates on the internet. Yes, each of our player lawyers will
- 50:07have a minute to make their case. They can build on their teammates arguments,
- 50:12or build to their teammates arguments, or take things in a completely different
- 50:15direction. Each minute will be yours to do with what you wish. Points
- 50:19will be awarded for Christmas accuracy, individual passion, and for using them high
- 50:23falutin lawyer words. And it's going to be each team arguing the opposite side
- 50:29of the same thing. So I'm going to say the team in last place,
- 50:32MLLM. You can decide which side of the case you are on.
- 50:37And the first dichotomy, the first Christmas dichotomy we will be dealing with,
- 50:43is die Hard is a Christmas movie? Slash die Hard isn't a Christmas movie?
- 50:47Aw Udra and Aaron, would you like to argue that die Hard is
- 50:52or isn't a Christmas movie? Odra, I don't know how you personally feel,
- 50:55but I feel like we would do well with the is yeah Christmas movie
- 51:00option? Yes? Okay, you going with is a Christmas movie, which
- 51:05means eggno, because you'll be arguing in a couple of minutes that it isn't
- 51:08a Christmas movie. So, Aaron, would you like to take the lead?
- 51:13Adra? How do you feel? Do you want me to go first?
- 51:15And you just follow up? Go for it and I'll build on it.
- 51:19Is it one minute piece? Yeah? One minute apiece. I'll let
- 51:22you know when your time's up. Parent awesome, whenever you're ready. All
- 51:23right, ladies and gentlemen of the jury. I declare that it would be
- 51:30a massive miscarriage of justice to label Die Hard as anything other than a Christmas
- 51:37movie. The fact that the soundtrack has Christmas music on it is a good
- 51:42start. I believe the movie starts with jingle bells and ends with jingle bells.
- 51:47How can you go wrong with that? Also, there's the merry act
- 51:51of John McClain as a sort of modern day Santa Claus gifting terrorists with bullets
- 52:00to the face, neck and chest. I think it goes beyond saying.
- 52:06I think it goes beyond and of course there's the jolly old fat Man.
- 52:10A Carl from Family Matters shows up and saves the day in the end.
- 52:15I mean, come on, you can't get more Christmas ey than that.
- 52:19Absolutely not seconds. So I've had a little eggnog, so yeah, that's
- 52:25that's what I've got. Stuh got steph Aldre, Do you want to take
- 52:30the lead? Building on my associates argument, people would say yes, but
- 52:37is there enough Christmas in this movie? It takes place at Christmas? But
- 52:43is that enough? And I say yes. All traditions are made up by
- 52:47a collective group feeling all traditions, whether that be a religious one or just
- 52:54culturally relevant at the time, all of them are. And the fact that
- 53:00a large consensus of people have said this movie takes place at Christmas, we
- 53:05watch it at Christmas. Every time I watch it and it's not Christmas Christmas,
- 53:08I'm thinking, why am I not watching this at Christmas? Demonstrates that
- 53:15in the collective consciousness, like every other tradition, we have deemed this as
- 53:21a Christmas movie. Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, thank you for your
- 53:27time. I have no further witnesses. Did you have any good stuff?
- 53:36Good good argument made that I'll refrain from my comments until hearing the other side
- 53:42of the argument. It's only fair that we hear the imagine if you decided
- 53:45cases after only hearing one side. I think we've had enough, So the
- 53:52eggnogers. Who's going to take the lead for you? Guys? Ben?
- 53:55Can I start? Sure? Okay, whenever you ready, Jason, I'll
- 53:59stop time, Ladies and gentlemen of the jury. What I'd like to first
- 54:04go with before we sort any part of this conversation is clearly defined. What
- 54:07makes a Christmas movie? I think in the court of law we must not
- 54:13prosecute based on feelings, but also definitions. There are certain check marks that
- 54:17you have to make before you can prosecute as long as the crime or in
- 54:22this case, the movie clearly hits all the check marks in a Christmas movie,
- 54:24the classics right, the precedents that we have set. You got to
- 54:28have sad divorced dad, and I think this movie gets that point across.
- 54:31Yeah. Absolutely, You've got to have though the idea of giving the idea
- 54:37of the seasons, and you also have to have a Santa Claus. Think
- 54:40of Miracle on thirty fourth Street, the Santa Claus elf Need, I say,
- 54:45Rudolph the Red Nose, Raindeer, lots of other movies that we consider
- 54:47Christmas movies. I also believe that this idea of coincidence is occurring within the
- 54:53film die Hard. Just because it is coincidentally set five seconds at Christmas,
- 55:00just because Mark Wohlberg thinks he can save nine to eleven doesn't mean he actually
- 55:04did. Wait. Just because it's kind of set at Christmas doesn't mean it's
- 55:07Christmas movie. I'm with you. I'm with you, yeah, Ben,
- 55:10do you want to pick up up from that? Absolutely? So your honor.
- 55:15You know, first, I'd like to challenge the merits of our the
- 55:21prosecution here. I mean he was talking to the jury. This is clearly
- 55:23a bench trial. There is no jury here, So clearly not a Christmas
- 55:30movie because just because it takes place during Christmas, I mean, you know,
- 55:36is Predator a Christmas movie? It could take place during Christmas? Who
- 55:39knows Black is in it? When everything he does is it is Christmas related
- 55:45in some way. That's what makes a Christmas movie is the themes. It's
- 55:50not just the setting. The setting is the window dressing of what's going on.
- 55:54But you know, the themes of giving and philanthropy and goodwill towards men.
- 56:00There's not a lot of good will towards men in this movie. I
- 56:01gotta say it's it's it's it's violent and not really befitting of the holiday season.
- 56:08Also, No Jesus, just check No Jesus. It's the no does
- 56:15no Jesus in Yeah, yeahs oh good good stuff. Now let's unpack the
- 56:23arguments made here in the court today. I'm just gonna say, right off
- 56:28the bat, I think MLLM did a better better case of arguing it being
- 56:31a Christmas movie. I liked the highlighting of the music. I liked the
- 56:36gifting of the terrorists and bullets. That was a nice line. The spirit
- 56:40I'm giving. I will say, Aaron, you did a great job with
- 56:45the lawyer voice men. You also did a good job with the lawyer fantastic.
- 56:52So there's definitely gonna be extra points awarded there. In terms of the
- 56:57Eggnoggers, Jason, I'm not sure where did where did nine eleven and Mark
- 57:00Wahlberg come into it? Oh, Mark Wolberg thinks he can he could have
- 57:02prevented nine to eleven. That's that's like a famous statement he's made. He
- 57:07thinks he could have prevented nine to eleven. And I was trying to think
- 57:08of examples of people going like, this is close enough, I could have
- 57:13done this. Oh I see to be like, yeah, just because it's
- 57:15set at Christmas doesn't make it. I didn't. I was like that,
- 57:19yeah, John McLean, the it is set in a big toll building,
- 57:22but I don't think it's not event No, no, no, it's not
- 57:24nine eleven. I'm trying to Yeah, Mark Mark America, those who don't
- 57:28know Mark Forborg thinks he could have prevented nine to eleven. Okay, okay,
- 57:31And Sir John McClain probably prevented nine to eleven. That's true if only
- 57:38he was around. That's another point for us. I don't think so.
- 57:45Ben. I've got written down here that you said Predator is set at Christmas.
- 57:50I said it may as well, be like, how do you know
- 57:51it's not that's true. I suppose you could say that about any movie.
- 57:57That's what we were saying about this movie. Shane Black was in it,
- 58:00and pretty much everything Shane Black has made takes place during Christmas. But isn't
- 58:04a Christmas movie. I hear. I hear all right. My final ruling
- 58:07on this as judge as the of the fan court is four points to M
- 58:12L l M and three points to the Egnoggers. We'll take it. Just
- 58:15for those curious, I don't think it's a Christmas movie. Actually you were
- 58:20arguing the side that you actually wanted to ask. Wow, I say us.
- 58:28I fell on either side. Further read like stated yeah for the reasons
- 58:32I stated, like, if you have a cultural understanding of it as Christmas,
- 58:37I don't, don't. I don't Christmas. If you don't, then
- 58:39it's not Yeah, this is fun. I'm glad we've underscored it all with
- 58:44it doesn't actually matter. Yeah, okay, I've got one more statement,
- 58:47one more festive statement. Okay, So Eggnoggers, it's up to you to
- 58:52decide. Would you like to defend the statement ugly Christmas sweaters are ugly?
- 58:57Or would you like to defend the statement ugly Christmas sweaters are pretty the opposite
- 59:00of ugly. I I'm wearing an ugly sweater right now, in time for
- 59:07the holidays. And do you feel pretty? I feel pretty well. I
- 59:14think we have our answer, then, thank you. Yeah, let's let's
- 59:15go forward. Okay, okay, which means after they've made that argument,
- 59:22it will be up to the male leg lamp millionaires to decide if they would
- 59:27to argue. I was just so impressed. It's the thing. They'll be
- 59:35arguing the ugly Christmas waters are ugly? So who's taking the lead on ugly
- 59:39Christmas wetters are? Pretty last time? Ben? So, do you want
- 59:44to lead this time? Yeah? Sure, take it away. I'll start
- 59:46the timo whenever you're ready, Ben. So they call them ugly Christmas sweaters
- 59:51because it's you know, they're not normal. They're just be dazzled and uh
- 59:57and and fancy here. But so if you think about it, what an
- 59:59ugly Christmas sweater is. It's a very festive garb you put it on.
- 1:00:02It's usually got like little reindeer noses or or you know, tinsel hanging off
- 1:00:07of it. I mean, they're they're ridiculous. They're over the top.
- 1:00:09But it's a decorated sweatshirt. And it's essentially a Christmas tree that you can
- 1:00:15wear. And and if anyone that's gonna come on here and say Christmas trees
- 1:00:19are ugly is about as grinchy as you can get. And I won't stand
- 1:00:23for it. Like if you get a if you have a sweater with lights
- 1:00:28on it and they twinkle, it's very beautiful and everyone. Like if you
- 1:00:32go to an ugly sweater party, everyone's everyone's decked out, everyone enjoys it.
- 1:00:37They have a great time ten seconds, and that is that's what the
- 1:00:42season is all about. So if you think ugly Christmas sweaters are ugly,
- 1:00:46you think Christmas is ugly? All right? Good from stuff from that from
- 1:00:51Ben? Yes? Yeah, absolutely so. I also agree with my partner,
- 1:00:54let's defind an ugly sweater, right. I believe the tradition of ugly
- 1:00:59sweater is also came from the idea that your grandma would neat you an ugly
- 1:01:01sweater. And honestly, if you're calling an ugly sweater from your grandma an
- 1:01:05ugly sweater, you're calling your grandmother ugly and that's just offensive and not within
- 1:01:09the spirits. Also, as of Selenial, I feel like ugly Christmas sweater,
- 1:01:16I'm gonna out myself, I'm gonna say, And then ugly Christmas sweater
- 1:01:21is ironic? And what else do zonis loved and just layering themselves in irony?
- 1:01:24Ooh they just bait Ooh what's that? A second a third layer of
- 1:01:29irony? I love it. People love ugly Christmas sweaters. Most of them
- 1:01:32are printed in graphic t's like the ones that I'm wearing on now. And
- 1:01:36the people who go really off those are spencers. They're really ugly and they're
- 1:01:40wanting it. They want that shit, you know. Okay, yeah,
- 1:01:45fair enough, fair enough, there's solid arguments there, but I'll withhold my
- 1:01:50judgment until I hear why ugly Christmas sweaters are indeed ugly the thing that Brandon
- 1:01:54has so Aaron oldra who would like to take the lead here? I believe
- 1:01:59I led last time. Ander. Do you want to leave this time or
- 1:02:01would you like me to go ahead? I absolutely can all right when your
- 1:02:06radio dress. Please know that none of the very few of the things I'm
- 1:02:09about to say reflect my own opinions, but I'm gonna go fucking hard.
- 1:02:14Absolutely. I want that on the record. Ugly Christmas sweaters are not only
- 1:02:22bad in a Christmas setting, They're bad for the world as a whole.
- 1:02:25Micro macro micro. I am a fiber artist. I knit, I crochet,
- 1:02:31and the fact that I would spend so much time and planning for this
- 1:02:36type of a tradition in order to create something that is intentionally ugly that I
- 1:02:40can only wear during a certain time of the year. This is a waste
- 1:02:45of my time, This is a waste of materials, This is honestly a
- 1:02:47waste of everything. And then you can buy them cool, awesome. That's
- 1:02:52the way most people do it. If you get the knitted ones, amazing,
- 1:02:55you have just probably paid for fast fashion labor, because people are not
- 1:03:00going to invest a ton of money into appropriate working conditions for something that is
- 1:03:07going to be worn once a year. Congratulations, there's a reindeer fucking on
- 1:03:13your sweatshirt. And then I had another point, but I forgot what it
- 1:03:17was. Now he times up. But those good arguments. I love the
- 1:03:23micro and the macro. But let's hand it over to Aaron to pick up
- 1:03:25the baton whenever you're ready, Ladies and gentlemen of the court. And I
- 1:03:32submit to you that I have just come from a company Christmas party to be
- 1:03:40here on this zoom call. And at this party, my boss was wearing
- 1:03:47an ugly Christmas sweater of a cat, wearing headphones, holding a full beer,
- 1:03:55and spinning a pizza like a record on a DJ station. I'm telling
- 1:04:00you that ugly sweater was awesome. It was funny. What it was not
- 1:04:09was visually attractive in any sense of the word. All Right, every sweater
- 1:04:16I've ever gotten from my grandma, God bless your soul, was fucking ugly,
- 1:04:25right there. Fantastic, excellent stuff there, Aaron, I feel like
- 1:04:31both teams brought brought Grandma's into this. My Grandma's been invoked here. Oh,
- 1:04:38this is such good arguments from all four players. I was. I
- 1:04:42was convinced by the ugly Christmas waters being pretty until Audrey used a lot of
- 1:04:47genuine scientific argument jargon and Aaron did possibly the greatest court room performance we've had
- 1:04:54in in this und It's actually changed a little bit, but you felt it
- 1:05:01is believed like he was saying, yeah, absolutely, he was unsaved.
- 1:05:05It's because he was moved. You know what's so funny about his argument and
- 1:05:11my argument? Yeah, yeah, that he goes it's not visually appealing.
- 1:05:14My entire ap art portfolio in high school was just taking really famous artworks and
- 1:05:21putting cats in the middle of it. You've proven my point. It's visually
- 1:05:28a feeling to me. But I also love you. Yeah, Jason,
- 1:05:32you also invoked being a sillennial. I feel like I can't let that go.
- 1:05:38I am right, No, you have ninety six like I'm the definition.
- 1:05:41You absolutely are. It's just it's so self assured for such a young
- 1:05:45generations, as a Sillennials, at least, you know saying as a as
- 1:05:51a zoomer. I suppose yeah, uh. And I did enjoy Ben saying
- 1:05:58it's like a Christmas tree you can wear, and of course Christmas trees are
- 1:06:01beautiful. That's fantastic, Ordro bringing in the entire wrath of the fiber arts
- 1:06:06community in terms of value for money. But I think it's ultimately Aaron's anecdote.
- 1:06:13You know. Anecdotal evidence is a thing. That's a phrase I've heard
- 1:06:15before. So I have no choice but towards reward it. So it's gonna
- 1:06:18be five points to the m l l M and four points to the eggnoggers.
- 1:06:23Wow, that's fair. That's nice fall points. I'm stunned. I
- 1:06:30mean, but think about thetations for your jacket. Man, I don't want
- 1:06:35you. Okay, that's the end of the round. Let's ask Frosty the
- 1:06:41Snowman to calculate the latest scores. The Eggnoggers are on eleven points, and
- 1:06:45look it's all square. M L l M are also on eleven points.
- 1:06:51It's like the Gift of the Magi. Yes, it's the same. I
- 1:06:59reference that story a lot, but I don't think I actually know it.
- 1:07:01I got you eleven points. I also got you eleven point A psychopath in
- 1:07:11a sparkly jacket handed them to me one at ease. Okay, Round three
- 1:07:16next, and during that break, try not to forget about the true meaning
- 1:07:20of Christmas commercialism. Round three is called Holidates. It's a new game,
- 1:07:31and we'll probably have a non festive version of it next year, so I'll
- 1:07:34need to come up with a new name for it that isn't Holidates. But
- 1:07:38for now here is the festive version. I will offer our teams a question
- 1:07:42where the answer is always a year. Without conferring. Each player will write
- 1:07:46down an answer. I'll then take each team's answers and average them out between
- 1:07:50each pair, leaving each team with a single date, and the closest state
- 1:07:56to the correct answer scores a point, and you'll score bonus points for being
- 1:08:00incredibly close, or lots of bonus points if you are spot on. I've
- 1:08:02already ridden my year down. Are you lucking that in? Jason as well?
- 1:08:11I wrote it down on paper. It's illegal. Bit it's like when
- 1:08:14I used to It's like when I used to play poker and I going all
- 1:08:16in blind without even looking at the car. Yeah. Yeah, that's my
- 1:08:19everyday life, man, Jason, Jason don't play. Jason is new to
- 1:08:27wreck Shop, and I've just realized how difficult it might be to figure out
- 1:08:31the exact midpoint date between two dates. So I've brought up a calculator to
- 1:08:35try and somehow help me with that. Hopefully we're not so far off that
- 1:08:40you need a calculator. Like I'm like, I'm like, wait, we're
- 1:08:45just writing years, right, We're not writing like months. Yeah, just
- 1:08:48just yes, But I need to let's not make it that hard on you.
- 1:08:54Oh maybe he's going way back and we got to do like BC dates
- 1:09:00when was Christmas invented? So there's just many arguments to that, I believe
- 1:09:06it or not. I did a entire it was about six week class in
- 1:09:12Christmas Studies that was like the history of Christmas and like where all the different
- 1:09:15cultural influences come from. There's like five different origins for Saint nick world.
- 1:09:20Oh yeah. With Santa Claus, there's there's loads. I like the one
- 1:09:25where like the like his the red and white came from the that mushroom that
- 1:09:30grows under trees. Oh yeah, oh, I like mushroom that that like
- 1:09:36what do they called Scandinavia Mario one, Yeah, the blue ground around time
- 1:09:42that they'd eat it and it'd be like the presence under the tree and it's
- 1:09:45the color of Santa Claus. Really okay, so now we're treading Santa Claus
- 1:09:49stories like their folk tales. Because I thought it was Coca Cola. I
- 1:09:54thought this whole thing was Coca Cola. There was, there was some red
- 1:09:58Santas before Coca Cola, but Coca Cola were the first to combine the big
- 1:10:01rosy faced, bearded jolly man with the color red. He was mainly green
- 1:10:08jolly faced man before that. It's a green man like an elf. Yeah,
- 1:10:12like a big yeah. Oh man, I'm learning so much on this
- 1:10:15podcast, man, all right, well prepared to learn a lot more.
- 1:10:19So here is the first question for every single player, and then we'll work
- 1:10:24out averages. So it is said that the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade kicks off
- 1:10:29the festive season. But what year did the first ever Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade
- 1:10:34take place? Honestly, I'm gonna keep my answer that I write. Yeah,
- 1:10:40yeah, I was gonna be for the bit, but I'm actually pretty
- 1:10:43confident that this is going to be in the ballpark. Okay, I have
- 1:10:45a wild idea. I'll find out when was Jesus born That's what I need
- 1:10:51to Yeah, yeah, pretty close to this day. Actually, yes,
- 1:10:54it was or after Macy's was established. Macy has been here since the beginning
- 1:11:01of time. It's one of the oldest religions. I think they named the
- 1:11:04department store after the parade, so they usedid to Jerusalem was the Macy's stay.
- 1:11:15Okay, Eggnogger's, let's start with Jason, what's what's your number that
- 1:11:17you pre wrote. I'll put down nineteen forty seven for some reason, nineteen
- 1:11:23forty seven, okay, And Ben, what did you what did you put?
- 1:11:28Well, just to make it easier for you to average, I put
- 1:11:30nineteen fifty seven. Nineteen fifty seven, okay, So that'll be an average
- 1:11:34of nineteen fifty two for the Eggnogger's there. Moving on over Uldra, what
- 1:11:41have you got for this one? I wrote nineteen twenty, nineteen twenty and
- 1:11:45Aaron see Odre, n oh no, whoa, oh shit? I wrote
- 1:11:53nineteen thirty one. The cameras reverse nineteen thirty one? Did write nineteen thirty
- 1:11:59one, and he's gonna have a half year now? Yes, well,
- 1:12:02round up? Or should we round down? What should we do that?
- 1:12:04Around me? To twenty one? Which one's further away from the correct answer?
- 1:12:09Matt, Yeah, we'll say. We'll say the average is nineteen twenty
- 1:12:15six. We'll go with that, so we've got nineteen fifty two versus nineteen
- 1:12:19twenty six? Was the first Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade sort of before the Wall
- 1:12:24Street crash? Or was it after the war when everyone was living in those
- 1:12:28prefabricated houses. The actual answer, Audre and Aaron, you're very close.
- 1:12:32It's nineteen twenty four. You are too old. So I'm actually gonna give
- 1:12:36you two points for that because you're pretty damn close. There. That's Cradra
- 1:12:42Odra, that's yess aired. All right, let's bring some pop culture into
- 1:12:48proceedings. Here is your next question. What year did the infamous Star Wars
- 1:12:54Holiday special air proper nerd question on the Pop Culture Show. I know,
- 1:13:01I feel like I should know this for some reason. I'm still sorry,
- 1:13:04Jesus bors oh yea, all right. Nineteen twenty that's when the George Lucas
- 1:13:12very old, don't know eternal. Let's have the MLLLM this time, Aaron,
- 1:13:18what have you got for this one? Okay, this may worker,
- 1:13:23it may fail. I had to go at writing it reverse to see if
- 1:13:26the camera rob it right now? Seventy nine, nineteen seventy nine. I
- 1:13:32like it. It's reverse for you, it's not reverse for us. Oh
- 1:13:38really? Look, yeah, I think it was the will this time,
- 1:13:43but you know it's a skill you now have, so it looked backwards.
- 1:13:47So yeah, and Odra, what did you put for this one? I
- 1:13:53put nineteen eighty four? Nineteen eighty four because I was like, I knew
- 1:13:58the original. I think the first one was seventy seven, and then I
- 1:14:02was like, eighties was the time. I'll stay. I'll stick to what
- 1:14:04was rounding up and say, nineteen eighty two is the date that you've got
- 1:14:09there? Okay, Eggnogger's ben, what have you got for this one?
- 1:14:14I also wrote nineteen seventy nine. Okay, another nineteen seventy nine, because
- 1:14:19I'm pretty sure it was in between. Jason, Yeah, I knew.
- 1:14:24Yeah, I rode seventy eight just because I wasn't sure. I knew it
- 1:14:29was like close. I don't remember when Empire came out. I'll keep the
- 1:14:32rounding up rule and say nineteen seventy nine. Will stay consistent with that.
- 1:14:36So nineteen seventy nine versus nineteen seventy eight, No, nineteen eighty two.
- 1:14:45That's right, is it nine seventy nine verses nineteen eighty two. I'm just
- 1:14:46saying numbers. Yes, So I think so very much in the same ballpark
- 1:14:53here. This is the this is the Star Wars zone, this is the
- 1:14:55Star Wars time. You know your Star Wars. The correct answer, Jason
- 1:15:00was spawn it is nineteen seventy eight. I'm not going to give full three
- 1:15:05points because the rules of averages I've rounded up. I'm going to be two
- 1:15:09points because you were one year off. Good stuff. I do have the
- 1:15:12Star Wars holiday sweater on, so I feel vindicated. Yeah, I knew
- 1:15:15it was between the first movie and the second one, because because Luke still
- 1:15:21had the full like Blonde Bouffont we also had like the worst tan in the
- 1:15:27history of anything any more tennis shoes. Yeah, maybe this is the ri
- 1:15:34Finally where is Oh? There is probably still a video out there, but
- 1:15:40I wrote like a good like I think three minutes of rage poetry based on
- 1:15:45the Star Wars Holiday Special. Yeah, I'll send a link and if you
- 1:15:51want to include it with the episode, be my guest, one of my
- 1:15:56one of my finest works. I guarantee I'll definitely read it because I've seen
- 1:16:00it way more times than anyone should. Like, I watched it, so
- 1:16:04you've seen it once, watch it again, and then I watched it again.
- 1:16:11I'm like, motherfucker, it's you've probably watched the holiday special more than
- 1:16:16you've watched the sequel movies. That's I think that's accurate. Actually, yeah,
- 1:16:23possibly even the prequels to be honest. Now we're gonna get comments.
- 1:16:30No, no, we don't. Yeah, we don't have opinions. It's
- 1:16:31all silly. Ah okay, here is your next question. Yeah, this
- 1:16:38one's gonna be tough. This if anyone knows this well done. It's as
- 1:16:43simple as this. What was the first candy cane made? It was the
- 1:16:48first candy cane made or recorded candy cane. I'm sure some people in the
- 1:16:56ancient times could have messed with sugar and stuff. I just was saying,
- 1:17:00all right, so it's not the ancient times. You just gave that away.
- 1:17:02I'll get I'll reveal full of we're dealing a d That's as much as
- 1:17:09I will give you. You've got a two fucking on a candy cane at
- 1:17:15the crucifixion. No, it could have been that was technically I don't know
- 1:17:20a true Yeah, everything is during Jesus' lifetime. Every he answer to every
- 1:17:27one of these questions. I just put numbers out there. I feel like
- 1:17:30it is an old timey candy Like I feel like old timey candy shops you
- 1:17:34can get it at. But then past a certain point in like remembering of
- 1:17:39history, there's just like a dark zone where I'm like, this is like
- 1:17:42two hundred years that all technically could have happened simultaneously. You've got to put
- 1:17:45a number on old timey, don't you. Yeah. Yeah, Like we
- 1:17:50found out that the record player is like from the early eighteen hundreds, it's
- 1:17:57not late seventeen hundreds. Oh yeah, you tell me. Candy canes don't
- 1:18:02exist in the same time as record players. That's okay. Well, let's
- 1:18:06let's find out. Let's see what kind of numbers we've gone for. Let's
- 1:18:11start with the egg knockers. Jason, what have you got here for eighteen
- 1:18:14seventeen? Eighteen seventeen seems reasonable enough? Yeah, no, clue what trains
- 1:18:20are going? Do you know? I've got the answer written in front of
- 1:18:23me, the sort of thing I would say, Ben, what have you
- 1:18:27got for this? We are of similar minds. I've got eighteen twenty four,
- 1:18:31eighteen twenty four. I don't even care if we get the number right.
- 1:18:35I like that we're in sync, you know what I mean? We're
- 1:18:38on point all right. Eighteen twenty one is your team's official year for candy
- 1:18:43canes being made. Let's see what's on the other side of the metaphysical game
- 1:18:46space, Udro, what have you got for this? I changed my answer
- 1:18:50about three times and then settled with the answer that I am now the least
- 1:18:54happy with. But it's the one that's written down fifty eighteen, Arl are
- 1:19:08not insane? I wrote seventeen thirty two, seventeen thirty two. But this
- 1:19:15brings my answer down. So does that make you happier than your answer.
- 1:19:21It makes me happier in your answer, not in my answer. So that
- 1:19:26Yeah, that makes seventeen ninety one as the is the average there. So
- 1:19:31we've got eighteen twenty one versus seventeen ninety one. You've ended up thirty years
- 1:19:35apart because of the averaging. But I'm only going to give a point to
- 1:19:39the team that is closest because you're all nowhere near. Oh no. The
- 1:19:45first candy cane was actually made in sixteen seventy seventeen in Germany America. I
- 1:19:53was I was sixty years off, so I wasn't bad. Yeah, Aaron
- 1:19:56definitely the closest, and that guess has earned one point few team as well.
- 1:20:00I'm so glad you brought my answer to who's done it. I knew
- 1:20:04it was old, old because like it predated candy corn, and I know
- 1:20:11candy corn came out in the eighteen eighties. It was like the candy cane
- 1:20:15had to be much earlier. It's a simpler candy. Yeah, yeah it
- 1:20:19was. It was in Germany and it was developed to keep children quiet during
- 1:20:25church services around Christmas time. Nice, and then it was sweet shops and
- 1:20:30this will shut those brats up the is. I'll make it really pointy and
- 1:20:36I'll strike them with it. It's in the sixteen hours old. They didn't
- 1:20:42have plastics so like their their hands would be so sticky. Oh absolutely,
- 1:20:47so they just coated and ship all the time. Pretty sure they weren't wrapped.
- 1:20:51And god knows how many people touched it before it got to your mouth.
- 1:20:54But yeah, yeah, but you know, bubonic plake maybe a bigger,
- 1:20:59bigger worry than sticky hands. Speak for yourself. It might. It
- 1:21:04could have been the candy cans. It's true. We don't know. We
- 1:21:09just don't know. The evidence dissolved. Okay, let's move on to another
- 1:21:16YEA based question, and it is this what your did's Starbucks start selling their
- 1:21:23coffee in red cups at Christmas time? Ah, shit, Andrew, we
- 1:21:27should know this, We absolutely should know this. I don't. It probably
- 1:21:33was in some kind of training material or not training material or like, but
- 1:21:39like graphics at least that we looked up. I'm gonna write down a random
- 1:21:45answer, and then I'm gonnam because people always are like they used to.
- 1:21:51Ah, they're making them not religious because they hate the church and they used
- 1:21:57to always be religious. And then they made them not religious. It's just
- 1:22:01always been religious. Yeah, they used to say Merry Christmas, I bet
- 1:22:06yeah, oh before they were red, like the people were like they used
- 1:22:11to be. They used to be religious, and now they're not. And
- 1:22:14it's a bunch of snowflakes and stuff on the cups. And I'm gonna boycott
- 1:22:17Starbucks. At least at the time when we worked at that establishment, and
- 1:22:23so I remember every year looking it up and being like, sometimes they've got
- 1:22:28mary on it. Sometimes it's just red. Sometimes it's a snowman, it
- 1:22:32is what it is. I would lay on most of those people boycotting,
- 1:22:38broke down and went back to Starbucks. Yeah yeahh within days, gosh yeah.
- 1:22:43The number of people who would come in on a Sunday and then give
- 1:22:45me crap for working on a Sunday. And I would just be like,
- 1:22:48well, when you stop shopping here, I'll stop working. People at Chick
- 1:22:53fil A never get that they've got the right Eyea, I can't even finish
- 1:22:57this. Aren't you to spend money too or something? And I was supposed
- 1:23:01to work or spend money on the you know, the Bible is more guidelines
- 1:23:06than actual rules to a lot of people. So, oh, now we're
- 1:23:11going to get comments. Oh right, right, let's let's get some before
- 1:23:14we just get comments. H marry everyone, to say, marry everyone.
- 1:23:17That's why I say marry everyone. Fuck you, and you wrote in Okay,
- 1:23:24let's let's get some dates. M l L m Oldra, what have
- 1:23:29you got for this one? I went for nineteen eighty four, nineteen eighty
- 1:23:33four. Whoa, I think it was like a they've been doing it for
- 1:23:39a long old time. That's fair, that's fair, Aaron, what have
- 1:23:42you got for this one? Andra? I was set and ready to apologize
- 1:23:45to you so hard because I could not in my head figure this out at
- 1:23:48all. But the day I went with was nineteen eighty, nineteen eighty,
- 1:23:56nineteen eighty two. So I've feel a little bit better that we're in saying
- 1:24:01the cooked up guys on Wall Street just knocking down some red cups Starbucks.
- 1:24:05Yeah it's the eighties. Yeah, okay, let's find out what knockers have
- 1:24:12got, Jason. I had a much later date I wrote down two thousand
- 1:24:15and six, two thousand and six, like the zillennial. You are,
- 1:24:23oh, might be right. I genuinely cannot remember. And Ben what have
- 1:24:29you got for this? In honor of Jason, I went with nineteen ninety
- 1:24:32six. Nineteen ninety six as reasonable as any other date. I have no
- 1:24:38fucking idea. I just know Starbucks started in like the seventies, maybe late
- 1:24:43seventies. Yeah, but so they could have gone with red cups from day
- 1:24:45one for all I know. I mean, there's only really two options for
- 1:24:48Christmas cups. Yeah, that's true, that's true. Yeah, we got
- 1:24:53two thousand and one for the knockers is the average versus nineteen eighty two here
- 1:24:58for mllm uh. Pretty close. One of you was pretty close with their
- 1:25:02answer, and that person is the person who named the decades that I think
- 1:25:06of most when I think of Starbucks, it's the nineties. So nineteen ninety
- 1:25:12seven was the actual year they first did the red cups at Christmas time.
- 1:25:17Averages two thousand and one. It's four off, so just one point there.
- 1:25:20But Ben, you were very close with your guests. Nice. Thank
- 1:25:24you Jason for being born. Then yea earlier in the podcast, Oh,
- 1:25:31Jason hasn't known a world without red Starbucks cups at Christmas time? Right?
- 1:25:36Or just for one year? Just for one year? Well, I haven't
- 1:25:40known a world without red cups because I don't go to Starbucks often. At
- 1:25:45my interview, they were like, what's your favorite drink? And I was
- 1:25:47like, nothing, here, I'm not paying three dollars for a couple.
- 1:25:51There. I got the job. We've balanced things out, We've shown that
- 1:25:56this was not a sponsored question from Starbucks. Okay, I've got one final
- 1:26:00question for this round, one final date to solve. Here. We're making
- 1:26:04it very Christmas here. It's music, and I want to know in what
- 1:26:09year was the first secular Christmas song written? And that that song, of
- 1:26:15course, the first ever secular Christmas song is, of course, jingle Bells,
- 1:26:19the first song not to be about Jesus. We got some it's also
- 1:26:24about Christmas. Old krooners on this thing? Man, why am I stressing
- 1:26:28so much about this? It's got to ask yourself, just how well do
- 1:26:32you know your music? Jason? We all know the answer to that.
- 1:26:35I suck at music. I still don't know the beats of Jimmy's World.
- 1:26:41Whatever that song is that I like from Jimmy's World, I don't even know
- 1:26:44what the song is. Say make sure that's a band. It just takes
- 1:26:46some time. Yeah, yeah, that's the song. Keep going. Oh,
- 1:26:49okay, come on, it's Christmas song, Jimmy world. It's just
- 1:26:57like we do every christ our Christmas tradition. All right? Do we all
- 1:27:05have an answer for this one? No, it's tough. It's another tough
- 1:27:12one. I didn't put down a good answer. But for the past,
- 1:27:15the past couple, I've just been like bold. Let's see, Batman's about
- 1:27:21one hundred years old, and the lyrics sells. Batman smells. That's true,
- 1:27:27Ben's it must be. Yeah, it can't be older than Batman?
- 1:27:31Make sense? All right? I'm also okay, let's get some answers.
- 1:27:38Let's start with the agnogus and Ben, what what number did you write down
- 1:27:41for this one? Having absolutely no idea, I went with a nice round
- 1:27:45nineteen hundred, nineteen hundred. I like it. Oh, another century,
- 1:27:50anything's possible because they're still singing about horses and sleighs. So it's got pre
- 1:27:57car Oh that's so valid. All right, Jason, what number did you
- 1:28:01put down? I put nineteen thirty seven. Nineteen thirty seven, Yeah,
- 1:28:08great depression about to head into World War two. Yeah, let's let's have
- 1:28:13some jingle bells. I so that gives you an average of nineteen eighteen,
- 1:28:19the end of the First World War. That's a good time to be jingle
- 1:28:25belling. But let's see what what your opponents have put up here. Let's
- 1:28:30start with Aaron, What's what's your number? Odra? Big swing, Yeah,
- 1:28:35big swing, fourteen sixty seven oh seven Columbus was singing that ship on
- 1:28:44the In my head, the jingle bells is older than anybody really knows or
- 1:29:03I appreciate this. I would love that I went for eighteen seventy three,
- 1:29:11seventy more reasonable at least, I don't know, And I think that gives
- 1:29:17you an average. Oh my god, I can't believe it's like this gives
- 1:29:20you the average of the exact year that the first county cane was made.
- 1:29:24This gives you the year sixteen seventeen. I looked up the answers ahead of
- 1:29:30time on Matt's laptop, and I just told us the wrong questions to do
- 1:29:34the year soon. So the question that is, did Shakespeare right tangle bells?
- 1:29:42Was it Shakespeare or was it those soldiers returning from the war makes me
- 1:29:49wondering because I'm pretty sure that, like during World War One, wasn't that
- 1:29:54when they had like the Christmas the Christmas ceasefire where they all came out.
- 1:29:59Yes, yes it might have sung Adelweiss there oh, because they were like,
- 1:30:03I don't and that might be you know, I really want to sing
- 1:30:05this song. There's lots of bells going on, but it hasn't been advantage
- 1:30:09yet. I can't put the words to it. That's that's if it ends
- 1:30:14up being nineteen eighteen, because we have nineteen eighteen versus sixteen seventy. I
- 1:30:18stand by it. I'm happy with it. Yeah, okay, Well it's
- 1:30:26gonna be the Eggnoggers who are getting the point because the others written LDRA relatively
- 1:30:30close in the grand scheme of things. Eighteen fifty seven was when James Pierpoint
- 1:30:36wrote that famous tune. I was trying to think of when someone would have
- 1:30:41named someone un ironically Fanny Bright, like the second versus A day or two
- 1:30:48ago. I thought I'd take a ride, and soon miss Fanny Bright was
- 1:30:53seated by my side. I'm pretty sure that's the name. Wow, yeah,
- 1:30:56eighteen hundreds, right, you don't, Yeah, you don't get many
- 1:30:59Fannies anymore. Well, I sure don't. I've been married for years it
- 1:31:08was just as the perfect setup. Everyone's knocked it out the part. Okay,
- 1:31:14that is the end of round three. Let's ask Charlie Brown to calculate
- 1:31:18the latest scores. Oh no, he's speaking in that weird trombone language that
- 1:31:21he's picked up from one of his co stars. I didn't write a joke,
- 1:31:26ca I justart to make something up on the spot. That's the only
- 1:31:28thing I knew about Charlie Brown. Exactly what's that, mad lady saying?
- 1:31:34Okay, more, we have the Eggnoggers on fourteen points, but the m
- 1:31:41l l M, the male leg Lamp Millionaires have taken the lead with fifteen
- 1:31:45points. Ooh ooh nice, I regret nothing. I have a regretted too.
- 1:31:55No, a much more reasonable guest than fourteen, said hell swaying hell
- 1:32:00of aus Sway. Okay. Up next is our final quick fire around.
- 1:32:03But before we get to that, let's talk prizes. This episode star prize.
- 1:32:11It's the birth of our present. Oh wait what Oh? I was
- 1:32:14gonna say, the birth of our Lord and save you Jesus Christ. Oh
- 1:32:17I wanted a present, but our winning team will also receive I'm very,
- 1:32:24very excited about this one. Oh, this first edition version of Charles Dickens
- 1:32:30a Christmas Carol. Oh my god, I didn't do it in the round,
- 1:32:34but I'll let you know. It was first published in eighteen forty three.
- 1:32:39I've just got to handle it very delicately here. I probably should put
- 1:32:42on gloves, but it's Christmas. Oh oh. Jo. By the way,
- 1:32:45are you feeling okay? Just I've had a bit of a cold recently
- 1:32:48and I'm so sorry, Charles. I'm so sorry. Up next, this
- 1:33:02is our crucial quick fight around. But first we must play one final set
- 1:33:06of ads. And this isn't festive. I've just got something to get off
- 1:33:10my chest. If you guys heard the Honda podcast ads that have been played
- 1:33:14throughout twenty twenty three, you ever had the ads for Honda Johncey Johnson usually
- 1:33:20Oh yeah, John c actually like early whatever? Yeah whatever ads info they
- 1:33:29got on me think I'm a degenerate gambler. Yeah yeah, same, I'm
- 1:33:31bit a mease so they clocked me. Yeah, I just want to put
- 1:33:38the person who makes those Honda ads on blast, John Cena, you do
- 1:33:41a fantastic job. But yeah, are the problems that you've had with your
- 1:33:44Honda ads? Throughout the twenty twenty three calendar year, john Sena, none
- 1:33:47of these mistakes are yours. The first one, at the start of the
- 1:33:51John Sena's voice was so quiet and the music was so loud that I couldn't
- 1:33:55hear what he was saying. It was like, yeah, okay, it
- 1:33:59was like the music was so loud. It was ridiculous. It gets worse.
- 1:34:02The second one, the one that aired throughout the summer, you left
- 1:34:05the clients. You left the client's instructions right at the beginning, so before
- 1:34:11the ad even plays, you hear the phrase Ed Reid for Honda, airing
- 1:34:15April through June twenty twenty three. And the one that's airing now that I
- 1:34:20heard a week ago that prompted this rant. You left the fucking garage band
- 1:34:26metronome playing throughout the whole thing, tik tok TikTok tictk over the top of
- 1:34:31John Cena doing a very professional job, amateur in closing Honda hire me and
- 1:34:39overpaid Honda guy, go fuck yourself, but have a merry Christmas. I
- 1:34:45have not heard these ads. I see the one on Hulu and it looks
- 1:34:48great. Yeah, oh, the TV one's fantastic. They've just put no
- 1:34:51effort into the podcast ones whatsoever. I've heard the first two, I hadn't
- 1:34:56heard the last one. Oh, the most recent one is the metronome is
- 1:34:59beyond the anyway, Thanks for letting me get that off my chest. We
- 1:35:02should have more segments and gate leapers like this, where it's like Matt's rant,
- 1:35:06I talk to advertisers. Fuck you, I know I'm talking to you.
- 1:35:17Actually, yeah, I could have a rent preped on those ads in
- 1:35:21Oh, it'd be so perfect. What is this? Oh? A nice
- 1:35:25little episode that's structured in a panel show about my favorite fan? What is
- 1:35:30this? Why is he talking about? I'm a marketing executive for Honda,
- 1:35:34and why is he talking such shit? But do hire me, though,
- 1:35:41do reach out. Our final quick fire rounds will test your broader pop culture
- 1:35:50knowledge, and it's called The Boys of Winter. The holidays mean a lot
- 1:35:56of things to a lot of different people, but have you ever noticed that
- 1:35:59it's dominated by a bunch of bloody men? Christmas is starting to look like
- 1:36:02a gay Sleepers recording. In this game, I will give our players clues
- 1:36:10to a bloke from festive pop culture history, a guy who is undeniably a
- 1:36:15Christmas Man. Those clues will be delivered in the style of the twelve Days
- 1:36:19of Christmas and what that man gave to me kevil oh oh Idia Oh.
- 1:36:29And there's of course a classic Gatesleepers twist. You need to say either naughty
- 1:36:33or nice after their name. That can be based on your own personal preference
- 1:36:38of that person. But if I don't hear either naughty or nice, I
- 1:36:42can't give you points. It's quick fire, so you'll be buzzing in by
- 1:36:45yelling out your team names. Let's practice that now, mulm lagers. Oh,
- 1:36:53emphasize name, gotcha, gotcha. It sounds like we're all clear and
- 1:36:57we know what we're doing. And I can't actually do a practice example on
- 1:37:00this one because there are only twelve days of Christmas and we have twelve questions,
- 1:37:04so I'd have to make up a day of Christmas. Tell that home
- 1:37:08depot Christmas starts like October twenty seventh in there, Hey, by the way,
- 1:37:14have you gotten these home depot ads? By the And I won't sing
- 1:37:24these because if we'd have done, the recording is one long recording, and
- 1:37:28I'd have drank a second hot chocolate back to back then maybe, But I'll
- 1:37:31just I'll say them in a merry tone, and we'll call that good enough.
- 1:37:34So interrupt me at any point. I think you'll pick up on the
- 1:37:38kind of people these Christmas men are as I read them out. It could
- 1:37:43be as obvious as it sounds. Okay, here we go, I'll start
- 1:37:45the timer. On the first day of Christmas, my true love sent to
- 1:37:49me a sack full of gifts for the lamp lamb. That's going to be
- 1:37:55Aaron Santa Claus Nice. Santa Claus Nice, I do think that is nice.
- 1:38:02On the second day of Christmas, my true love cent to me Will
- 1:38:06Ferrell's mug egg. Yes, Jason God, I don't know why this took
- 1:38:12me so long. Buddy the Elf, very nice, Buddy the Elf,
- 1:38:15very good. Okay, I see, I remember his name. I was
- 1:38:19just gonna call him. I was thinking of Will Ferrell and Brian Reynolds's newest
- 1:38:27movie, and I was like, maybe I would have accepted the titular elf.
- 1:38:33Maybe. Okay. On the third day of Christmas, my true love
- 1:38:40sent to me three timely spirits. I'll take older on this one. Ebenezer
- 1:38:47Scrooge pretty fucking naughty, naughty for most of that book for most of it.
- 1:38:55He's pretty naughty. Good stuff. Here is your next one. On
- 1:38:59the fourth day of Christmas, my true love sent to me a hot scoff
- 1:39:02and pipe. No egg, Yeah, either Jason or Ben, the Frosty
- 1:39:10the Snowman naughty. Okay, yes, he's naughty. It's absolutely right.
- 1:39:16I loved how you only said the full name of your team between you and
- 1:39:24egg display and with the lag fantastic. On the fifth day of Christmas,
- 1:39:32my true love sent to me five Golden Sings. Sing requires knowledge of how
- 1:39:42many Christmas albums this gentleman is released? Naggers Egg, Yes, Ben,
- 1:39:48Michael Boublay Naughty it is Michael Boo Blade, Yes, Michael bob Blair.
- 1:39:54I don't know how Christmas. It's too many, that's how many. On
- 1:40:00sixth day of Christmas, my true love sent to me green Thief a slaying.
- 1:40:05I heard all four things at the exact same time, so I know
- 1:40:09it's not Audre because that would have been really no lag. I genuinely cannot
- 1:40:15tell who that. Wait, Aaron, did you say anything? I did
- 1:40:17not? Okay, then I know what you said. Uh Jason, go
- 1:40:25for it. Uh Grinch, nice Grinch. Nice. Okay. At the
- 1:40:30end of the tale, well, what did you say, green thief a
- 1:40:38slaying? Okay, I've tried. I've tried to make it match the original
- 1:40:43lyrics, okay, which means I should probably sing the whole thing. On
- 1:40:46the seventh day of Christmas, my true love sent to me Chevy's gone lampooning.
- 1:40:54I think that will be Aaron Uh, Clark Griswold, naughty Clark,
- 1:40:59chriswald ver, Jeffy Chase, even nausea. Oh yes, by some margin.
- 1:41:06On the eighth day of Christmas, my true love sent to me a
- 1:41:11basket full of children snaggers. Yes, been trampis naughty. So people argue
- 1:41:30a genderlest entity, but many people use the heat pronoun for crampus, So
- 1:41:33yeah, his actions seem pretty male. Yeah, alright. On the ninth
- 1:41:42day of Christmas, my true love sent to me nine terrorists shooting lamp Oh
- 1:41:48yes, Aaron John McClain, nice, John McClain. Nice. Bruce Willis
- 1:41:55also nice. Shout out to Bruce Willis this year. Yeah, I wish
- 1:41:57you a merry Christmas. He wasn't in charge of the terrorists. On the
- 1:42:03tenth day of Christmas, my true Love sent to me ten loans a bouncing
- 1:42:10ten loans are bouncing. Ten loans are bouncing? Just broke aoun. I
- 1:42:19can't. I can't. There's no way. He's a festive person. I
- 1:42:27need to know who you think though, Aaron, all right, you know
- 1:42:30what, I'll waste it, lamb. Yes, I'm naughty. You know
- 1:42:38he is in Home Alone two, which is but he's not who I have
- 1:42:43written down here. No, I didn't imagine he was as would you like
- 1:42:47to say, yes, no, not in this one. This is this
- 1:42:51is George Bailey. Oh, it's a wonderful, lifeful life. I was
- 1:42:57gonna guess I should have What was all I would have said to Wash I
- 1:43:03don't true me. Yeah, yeah, it's a lot of life, man,
- 1:43:10George Bailey in a in a it's a wonderful life radio play. It
- 1:43:13was a lot of fun. Oh yes, did you get to do that
- 1:43:15speech? Yeah? I did. That's so cool. Yeah. Did you
- 1:43:20do like a Jimmy Stewart oppression? Uh no, I did kind of more
- 1:43:25of a like almost like a New York City sort of accent. You're going
- 1:43:30to say, charming Southern lawyer declared Mary the Tomorrow's another day, not what
- 1:43:41he said at all, I don't have your money in the bank. Has
- 1:43:43your fantastic remake a classic Hollywood gone? On the eleventh day of Chris must
- 1:43:54my true love sent to me eleven spooky somethings. Lamb Yes, Aaron Jack
- 1:44:04Skellington nice, Yes, Jack Skellington nice, A Christmas man, a Halloween
- 1:44:09man. Yeah, you can be both a man of many seasons and quick
- 1:44:14before the buzzer. On the twelfth day of Christmas, my true Love center
- 1:44:16me what I always thought was an Italian name for Santa, but turns out
- 1:44:20was a reference to an Ed Sullivan's sketch from the nineteen sixties, said by
- 1:44:25Tim Allen in the third act of nineteen ninety four's The Santa Lamb, Yes,
- 1:44:30Odra is this popo gie show? It is Christmas House. That's the
- 1:44:38buzzer anddra I knew it, and I was willing you to say the right
- 1:44:43thing. I was like, I know, he says something. I was
- 1:44:48like, he says it, and this is a fun voice. What does
- 1:44:50he do? What is popoo? I am urgent, genuinely until making this
- 1:44:58this game for what thirty years of my existence and how long the film has
- 1:45:03been out for I thought it was just an Italian name for Santa, but
- 1:45:08it turns out it's a Christmas mouse from the Ed Sullivan show That does that
- 1:45:13had a sketch played at Christmas time in the nineteen sixties. Ah, so
- 1:45:17this mouse is called Pobogigio, a Christmas mouse. And for the record,
- 1:45:27the winning team had already won before that, before that one, so it
- 1:45:30didn't just come down to a niche thing that Audra had a better chance of
- 1:45:32getting based on my mind. Okay, before we get to the final scores,
- 1:45:38I'd like to thank our players. You've all been merry and bright,
- 1:45:43and may all your Christmases be white in terms of snow. Not ideologically speaking,
- 1:45:50I never are good man, Ben, You've been a fantastic player day
- 1:46:00as always. What what have you got going on space auditees? Uh?
- 1:46:03Where can people? Where can people buy that geek exploration a new episodes out?
- 1:46:09M Maybe yeah, there's nothing in the hopper right now, but we'll
- 1:46:15get off our asses eventually. But Space audis you go to Space outitiescomic dot
- 1:46:18com and check it out. It's also on Amazon and uh Global Comics you
- 1:46:26could find it. Oh yeah, and there'll be a link in the description
- 1:46:29to make it even easier. WHOA, Aaron, Let's talk about Thane.
- 1:46:32You were also a fantastic player, But I want to talk about your novel
- 1:46:35that has just been published and that I've just finished reading. Yes, yes,
- 1:46:42uh, and you were very kind and complimentary about and I will happily
- 1:46:45say right here and right now that you are the only person who, at
- 1:46:50least who has claimed that they were figured out the uh the twist at the
- 1:46:57end, literally for the to it. You're the only one. Everyone else
- 1:47:01has said they didn't see it coming, So bravo to you. And I
- 1:47:05completely believe it because you're brilliant, so it makes perfect sense to me.
- 1:47:12Thane is a is a mystery thriller about a set of seven strangers trapped in
- 1:47:16a strange place and told by a computer that they have to complete tasks in
- 1:47:20order to be able to leave. The first two strikes or failures or breaking
- 1:47:25the rules cause them pain. The third is death. It's it's very it's
- 1:47:30meant to be intense, but it's actually very sociable, and the thrilling bits
- 1:47:34come in pieces here and there. It's not really like all the time crazy.
- 1:47:39Yeah, but I had a blast writing it. It's been a blast
- 1:47:43releasing it, and I am juggling promoting that, writing the second book,
- 1:47:48starting a kickstarter for the audio book, and are the two hundredth episode of
- 1:47:57my podcast? Yes, and a trip to fest these lines many lines.
- 1:48:06Aaron has so much going on that he has turned into a meme. Yeah,
- 1:48:11I'm so happy for you, ma'am. All the stuff that you've got
- 1:48:13going on the audiobook. That's very exciting. And thank you. Thank you
- 1:48:16so much for buying my book, and thank you so much for the kind
- 1:48:18words you said about it after I really appreciated it. Yes, do check
- 1:48:23out Thane. If I could do that annoying thing that people do when they
- 1:48:26promote someone else's piece of work and compare it to other things if you like
- 1:48:29things like black Mirror, Is that fair to say that it's got some like
- 1:48:31black Mirror vibes to it? It's a I think so. Yeah, sci
- 1:48:34fi mystery is essentially what we've got going on, and yeah, it invites
- 1:48:40you to unpack the mystery with the protagonist. And yeah, it's just a
- 1:48:44fantastic, well written book. Fine, check it out, thanks again,

- 1:52:14they say, and the Grinch sadly passed away. Merry Chris. If you
