Transcript
- 0:07Speaker 1: The Season with Peter Schrager is a production of the
- 0:09Speaker 1: NFL in partnership with iHeartRadio. What's Up, Everybody, This is
- 0:24Speaker 1: Peter Schrager. This is the Season with Peter Scheger. Weren't
- 0:27Speaker 1: planning on doing a podcast today, but it is the season,
- 0:30Speaker 1: and the season twists and turns and there's surprises, and
- 0:34Speaker 1: we had to do an emergency podcast here based on
- 0:36Speaker 1: the firing of Robert Sala by the New York Jets.
- 0:40Speaker 1: Sala forty five years old and this was his fourth
- 0:43Speaker 1: season as the Jets head coach, twenty and thirty six
- 0:47Speaker 1: record overall. And I start with that because I think
- 0:50Speaker 1: the end of the day, there is a scoreboard with
- 0:52Speaker 1: coaches and whether or not we can get into the
- 0:55Speaker 1: with it too soon? Was it not too soon? Twenty
- 0:57Speaker 1: and thirty six as a head coach? That was at
- 0:59Speaker 1: the end of the day, I think the biggest deal. Now,
- 1:03Speaker 1: let me empty the bag a little bit. To Sala
- 1:07Speaker 1: this morning overtext, he said he was not aware that
- 1:11Speaker 1: this was going down when he walked into work today.
- 1:14Speaker 1: He was told to have a meeting with the owners.
- 1:16Speaker 1: He did and said it was rather cut and dry.
- 1:19Speaker 1: They're going in a different direction. And they're elevating Jeff Olbrick.
- 1:21Speaker 1: I've spoken to sources in New York who said this
- 1:24Speaker 1: was not some long orchestrated deal that was weeks and
- 1:28Speaker 1: months in the making. It's a decision after the London game,
- 1:30Speaker 1: but I think that the Denver game had somebody to
- 1:33Speaker 1: do with it as well, in the pouring rain with
- 1:35Speaker 1: that ten to nine loss. Now Jeff Olbrick is going
- 1:39Speaker 1: to be elevated to head coach. Jeff Olbrick is the
- 1:41Speaker 1: defensive coordinator. I was the first to break that news,
- 1:45Speaker 1: did it so on the NFL network. I will tell
- 1:47Speaker 1: you that Olbrick is one of the more respected defensive
- 1:50Speaker 1: coaches in the league. Doesn't get a lot of credit.
- 1:54Speaker 1: But when San Francisco was looking to replace Steve Wilkes,
- 2:00Speaker 1: they did inquire with Olbrick and they could figure out
- 2:02Speaker 1: a title that would work, and he was like, no,
- 2:03Speaker 1: I'm staying with the Jets. I'm sticking it out here
- 2:06Speaker 1: with Sala. So there were inquiries and he decided to,
- 2:09Speaker 1: you know, be ten toes down in New York. Players
- 2:12Speaker 1: respecting coach, respect him, all right, all the salatious stuff,
- 2:15Speaker 1: Let's let's get to it. Did Rogers was Rogers really
- 2:19Speaker 1: the judge, jury and executioner here, I don't think so.
- 2:22Speaker 1: I don't think anything to do with Rogers going to
- 2:24Speaker 1: management and saying he needs to go. Is Hackett losing
- 2:27Speaker 1: his job? No, Hackett is keeping his job. Is Joe
- 2:31Speaker 1: Douglas leaving losing his job? No, not that I know
- 2:34Speaker 1: of as of right now. We're recording this literally an
- 2:36Speaker 1: hour after the news came out and I started getting
- 2:39Speaker 1: texts from folks all over again. Spoke to s Alo
- 2:43Speaker 1: over text this morning. I don't think he thinks I'm
- 2:44Speaker 1: betraying him by telling the podcast listeners this. He's upset,
- 2:49Speaker 1: he's devastated. He wanted to continue coaching the New York
- 2:52Speaker 1: Jets obviously, and Wash. You know the term that Jay
- 2:56Speaker 1: Glazer was blind sided. I guess anytime you walk into
- 2:58Speaker 1: work thinking you're gonna be preparing for the Buffalo Bills
- 3:01Speaker 1: and you're told you're out of work instead, that that
- 3:02Speaker 1: could be described as blindsided. Buffalo is key. Though in
- 3:08Speaker 1: this thing they're playing Monday night, the Boo Birds were
- 3:11Speaker 1: going to be out. I don't know if the Boo
- 3:12Speaker 1: Birds are still going to be out if things don't
- 3:14Speaker 1: go well. But the Jets offense right now is thirty
- 3:16Speaker 1: second in the league in rushing. That's nothing that Sala
- 3:20Speaker 1: had to do with. But if you look at the
- 3:21Speaker 1: Jets offense since twenty twenty one, there last in points
- 3:24Speaker 1: per game, second to lasting yards per play, last and
- 3:27Speaker 1: first down per game, last in red zone touchdown percentage,
- 3:31Speaker 1: and they've got the most giveaways. That's Salo's time there
- 3:34Speaker 1: and forever it was well, it's because they don't have
- 3:37Speaker 1: a quarterback. They don't have a quarterback. They get the
- 3:38Speaker 1: quarterback and sure enough, it's still no better. I will
- 3:42Speaker 1: say this, the Jets defense under Sala has been incredible,
- 3:45Speaker 1: and they've been incredible this year. They've just got two wins,
- 3:51Speaker 1: but the offense just hasn't turned it around, and it
- 3:53Speaker 1: feels like the mojo might be gone. Rogers right now
- 3:57Speaker 1: is having the worst season of his career as far
- 3:59Speaker 1: as percentage of touchdowns to interceptions, the passer ratings, yards,
- 4:04Speaker 1: all that stuff. The Jets haven't been to the playoffs
- 4:06Speaker 1: in thirteen years, is the longest streak in all football.
- 4:10Speaker 1: Rex Ryan was the last coach to take them there,
- 4:12Speaker 1: and since then, they've had bulls, they've had gays, and
- 4:14Speaker 1: now they've had Sala and they've had some interim you
- 4:17Speaker 1: know guys obviously along the way who have you know,
- 4:20Speaker 1: stepped in when necessary. I look not a fun day
- 4:24Speaker 1: for Robert Salah, But for Jets fans, I would say this,
- 4:28Speaker 1: this is a sign from ownership that they don't think
- 4:31Speaker 1: that they're done this year and they can still salvage
- 4:34Speaker 1: the season. You don't fire a coach this early into
- 4:36Speaker 1: the season if you don't think it's going anywhere. This
- 4:40Speaker 1: is the opposite of a white flag. If anything. This
- 4:42Speaker 1: has then doubled down, doubling down and saying we've got
- 4:44Speaker 1: to change up the mojo. This guy's not gonna be
- 4:46Speaker 1: the one to lead us. But my big takeaways an
- 4:49Speaker 1: hour removed from the news coming out and I wanted
- 4:51Speaker 1: to get a pot out quickly. Salas fired. Salah was
- 4:55Speaker 1: surprised to be fired. This was not one like if
- 4:57Speaker 1: you don't win in London, you're out Rogers. I don't
- 5:00Speaker 1: believe anything to do with this, and the rest of
- 5:02Speaker 1: the guys do keep their job. I will say this,
- 5:04Speaker 1: Joe Douglas six year contract when he was signed Klock
- 5:10Speaker 1: is likely ticking on him as well, I would imagine.
- 5:12Speaker 1: But As he keeps his job. That Hassan Reddick thing looms.
- 5:16Speaker 1: That's a head scratcher right now. And then the draft
- 5:19Speaker 1: pick of Olu, the offensive tackle one Brock Bowers is
- 5:22Speaker 1: on the board, and obviously the Jets had an interest
- 5:24Speaker 1: in Bowers. As offensive struggles go in the passing game.
- 5:27Speaker 1: That one is is eye opening. So I think everyone
- 5:31Speaker 1: is now under the microscope and no one is necessarily safe.
- 5:35Speaker 1: The meeting that was with the owners was with the owners,
- 5:40Speaker 1: and I don't think he got a chance to address
- 5:42Speaker 1: the team or anything of the sort. And I think
- 5:44Speaker 1: he's on his way, so sala gone, Jets move on.
- 5:51Speaker 1: If he has spoken to players, I'm sure he's done
- 5:53Speaker 1: so in an individual basis. I don't think it was Hey,
- 5:55Speaker 1: everybody gather around here, Robert's going to do a whole
- 5:58Speaker 1: farewell thing. This is rather quickly, pretty cut and dry,
- 6:00Speaker 1: and sometimes that's how it goes. So we're going to
- 6:03Speaker 1: have another guest on this week for the season. But
- 6:05Speaker 1: I thought it was worth getting this out there, just
- 6:09Speaker 1: the fact that this is as a surprise to solid,
- 6:12Speaker 1: to me, to everyone covering the game, as to you
- 6:15Speaker 1: at home, maybe, but the Jets doubling down on this
- 6:17Speaker 1: season and the all in stuff, and now it's going
- 6:19Speaker 1: to be even more eyes on that offense and whether
- 6:22Speaker 1: Hackett and Rogers can figure it out all right. New
- 6:24Speaker 1: episode coming up later this week, but we just want
- 6:26Speaker 1: to get something out there for your earwaves. Enjoy the
- 6:29Speaker 1: rest of your Tuesday. I'm sure there will be plenty
- 6:31Speaker 1: of news as we go. The Season with Peter Schrager
