- 0:28Hey everybody, good morning from the chicken coop.
- 0:31So often we hear people tell us put your phone down, be present
- 0:35with me. And it's great advice.
- 0:38I mean, I think I can tell you my phone is with me all the time
- 0:42because of my job and what I do. I record the podcast from the
- 0:46phone. It's a tool for me.
- 0:48But when someone says to you, you know, hey, put your phone
- 0:51down and be present with me, what are they really saying to
- 0:54you? They're they're asking for your
- 0:56attention. It's not just about putting the
- 0:58phone down, It's about giving them your attention and really
- 1:02looking at what do I need to do in order to give this person my
- 1:06attention. So best advice that I can give
- 1:10you on this is that everybody is different.
- 1:12Everybody has different rules for how they feel like they're
- 1:15being made special. And and that's really what
- 1:19they're asking for. They're saying, hey, you need to
- 1:22pay attention to me so that I feel special.
- 1:25I want to feel valued. I want to feel as though, you
- 1:28know, as I am here in your life, you are looking at me and you're
- 1:32saying I matter. The one thing that I know for
- 1:35sure is that people want to know they matter.
- 1:38They want to know that what they're doing in your life
- 1:42matters. They want to know that they have
- 1:44a a certain huge part of your life and importance in your
- 1:53life. It is 1000% about getting that
- 1:57piece and it's not about the phone.
- 2:01It's about knowing it could be a book.
- 2:03When I was a kid, my mother used to tell me constantly get your
- 2:07nose out of that book because I was always reading and I was
- 2:10reading because I love to read. But she took that as you know,
- 2:15I'm not paying attention because I'm reading or I'm working on,
- 2:20you know, I would sit there and painting doing something else
- 2:22and she'd be like talking to me and you're not paying attention
- 2:25to me. It wasn't the IT wasn't the
- 2:27phone. The phone, yes, is has an
- 2:29addictive personality to it, but the reality was I wasn't making
- 2:33her feel valued. And when you can kind of pull
- 2:36yourself back from the offense of someone calling you out on
- 2:40something and you can actually look at it and say, OK, one
- 2:43second here. The problem is this person
- 2:46doesn't think I am giving them attention, or I'm not being
- 2:51attentive to their needs or I'm not making them feel as though
- 2:57what they're talking about has any interest to me.
- 3:00It it all comes back to, you know, am I seen, am I heard, am
- 3:04I noticed? And if there's one thing that I
- 3:07know for sure, it's that we all want to be seen.
- 3:10We all want to be heard, We all want to be noticed, and we all
- 3:13want to know we matter. And if we don't feel that we
- 3:17matter, we will do things that are not necessarily things that
- 3:23we're proud of to get that attention.
- 3:25And we might act out and we might say things and we might do
- 3:29hurtful things because we just feel completely and totally
- 3:31overwhelmed by the fact that I don't know how to get your
- 3:34attention. I don't know what else to do.
- 3:36I feel like crap. And I just want someone to pay
- 3:38attention to me. And that might be you and it
- 3:40might be someone in your office and it might be a family member.
- 3:43I mean, you know, even right down to the dog, I, one of my
- 3:47dogs has this very, my big dog as a matter of fact, has this
- 3:50habit of taking his, his paw and he will actually hit me with it
- 3:54over and over if he thinks I'm not paying attention to him
- 3:57because he wants attention and he wants to know he has my
- 4:01attention. So he'll start and he'll start
- 4:03tapping me, tapping me, tapping me, tapping me.
- 4:05And it's annoying. But guess what he gets?
- 4:08He gets me to break my pattern and he shows me I'm not giving
- 4:11him the proper attention. So today this is all about
- 4:16understanding. Short, sweet, right to the point
- 4:19of knowing what does this person need from me?
- 4:22It's not about the phone. I don't need to lament this and
- 4:25keep going on, but that's what you need to ask yourself.
- 4:28So go do it. Remember, it's not about the
- 4:31phone, it's about am I giving them what they need.
- 4:33I hope you guys have a blessed day and I will see you all
- 4:37tomorrow. Bye.
