- 0:02Larry Wilson: Hi, this is Larry Wilson, and this is How to Talk to Humans.
- 0:07Larry Wilson: This is the podcast that shows you how to improve your communication skills.
- 0:13Larry Wilson: Are you looking to get a better job?
- 0:15Larry Wilson: Are you looking to find a relationship?
- 0:17Larry Wilson: Are you trying to do things in your life that have frustrated you and eluded you so far?
- 0:23Larry Wilson: I can show you so easily how to change that.
- 0:27Larry Wilson: Now, I can only do it with humans.
- 0:30Larry Wilson: If you're looking to deal with vampires or zombies extraterrestrial, this is not the show for you.
- 0:35Larry Wilson: But if you're really looking to improve your communication skills, I can show you what I've learned for 40 years in the show business working with the biggest celebrities and superstars in the world, and their secrets are unbelievable.
- 0:53Larry Wilson: What I'm going to be teaching you during the course of this podcast every week are tools that you can use to communicate toward success.
- 1:06Larry Wilson: Thanks again for joining me for another episode of How to Talk to Humans.
- 1:13Larry Wilson: I am prompted this week's episode by a conversation I had with my long-suffering wife.
- 1:23Larry Wilson: I'd say that in jest, my wife is not suffering.
- 1:27Larry Wilson: My wife is, I think, is very happy with the life she has.
- 1:34Larry Wilson: But of course, she does have to deal with me a lot of the time.
- 1:38Larry Wilson: And you can imagine how that might be difficult in some circumstances.
- 1:42Larry Wilson: Because of my bias towards communication, I don't always say stuff, but she can just tell by my physicality.
- 1:53Larry Wilson: If we're watching television and something happens where I think the characters on screen aren't acting like real people, where I think the writing isn't up to snuff because someone has created cartoon characters instead of realistic characters, she can tell, like I'll shift my weight, or I won't even make a sound necessarily.
- 2:17Larry Wilson: Now sometimes I will.
- 2:18Larry Wilson: Sometimes I'll say, no one in the history of humanity has ever uttered those words.
- 2:26Larry Wilson: It's usually a bad sign.
- 2:27Larry Wilson: I'm not that thrilled.
- 2:29Larry Wilson: But we're talking at great length because uh in some ways, we've never really talked in depth about Wilson method training, but she's uh subjected to a lot of spillover from various other things.
- 2:50Larry Wilson: And so she's very much aware of it.
- 2:52Larry Wilson: And she said to me, she said, what is it really?
- 2:56Larry Wilson: And I said, I don't know what you mean.
- 3:01Larry Wilson: She said, Really?
- 3:03Larry Wilson: What is Wilthameth?
- 3:06Larry Wilson: I said, well, you know the things that I teach, and you know the she said, yeah, yeah, but that's not what I'm talking about.
- 3:13Larry Wilson: And I said, well, I'm not sure what you're asking me.
- 3:18Larry Wilson: She said, well, she said, before you and I met many years ago, she said, I took different seminars, different things.
- 3:27Larry Wilson: She said, some of them, it didn't matter what they were purported to be about, she said, some of them really seemed to be just about granting permission to the people who attended to be able to do something.
- 3:46Larry Wilson: And I said, Oh, okay.
- 3:49Larry Wilson: I can see that absolutely.
- 3:51Larry Wilson: One example she gave was about a screenwriting class.
- 3:56Larry Wilson: Uh, I won't mention who the person was who was teaching it, but she said the things he talked about were all very valid, but they weren't really gonna help you be able to write a screenplay.
- 4:10Larry Wilson: Maybe maybe you could extrapolate some information from what he was saying, but really what was happening in the seminar that I think was not inexpensive, was the people who attended felt they had permission now to write a screenplay.
- 4:31Larry Wilson: And it's funny because uh psychologically that's that's a pretty big deal, if that's what's blocking you.
- 4:39Larry Wilson: And a lot of writers do have that difficulty.
- 4:43Larry Wilson: For whatever reason, they're concerned about uh they're self-consciously feeling someone is judging them or critiquing them, and it's usually themselves, it's not usually someone else.
- 5:00Larry Wilson: As they're writing, I wonder if any of you feel this way, that you stop yourself in the middle of writing thinking, who do I think I am to say this or write this or whatever?
- 5:15Larry Wilson: Maybe it's in a podcast, maybe it's not about writing, maybe it's about you appearing on camera, and you think, who wants to hear what I have to say anyway?
- 5:25Larry Wilson: Well, who knows?
- 5:27Larry Wilson: Maybe a lot of people, maybe no one.
- 5:30Larry Wilson: But what's the harm?
- 5:32Larry Wilson: What who are you hurting by doing this, right?
- 5:35Larry Wilson: Well, we all frequently have this feeling of self-consciously observing ourselves, and we are always our own worst critics.
- 5:46Larry Wilson: If you aren't, if you don't, if you don't have an experience ever of having felt that way, you're an unusual person, and I would imagine uh a dangerous person if you seriously think all the time, yes, everything I say is brilliant, I'm brilliant, what a joy just to be around me.
- 6:06Larry Wilson: It could be a very dangerous person.
- 6:09Larry Wilson: But my wife bought up this very interesting point of that sometimes people present something, maybe it's a coaching or training or instruction, but it's not exactly what it is presented to be.
- 6:30Larry Wilson: And I only bring this up because she said, she said, you actually teach real things that people use.
- 6:38Larry Wilson: I said, well, yeah, I I don't I don't have whatever that special ability is of some of these other people who are salespeople, basically, and they're incredible.
- 6:52Larry Wilson: They're so great, they can sell anything.
- 6:56Larry Wilson: My producer Scott brought this up I can't remember, out of thin air, just before we went here to record.
- 7:04Larry Wilson: He was talking about how weird it was about maybe 20 years ago, 25 years ago, someone somewhere convinced all the powers that be in Las Vegas that they should make it a family destination.
- 7:23Larry Wilson: Can you imagine how demented that idea is?
- 7:31Larry Wilson: Now, with the whole idea of, oh, what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, I mean that was the follow-up to the disastrous campaign.
- 7:42Larry Wilson: But I don't just mean they printed some posters or made some ads.
- 7:47Larry Wilson: They invested hundreds of millions of dollars.
- 7:51Larry Wilson: Some of you who are too young to have been around or have been aware of this will think I'm making this up.
- 7:59Larry Wilson: But I am not.
- 8:01Larry Wilson: They built huge amusement park type rides on the strip in Las Vegas.
- 8:12Larry Wilson: The idea was we're going to attract families to Las Vegas now.
- 8:18Larry Wilson: And they'll want to ride on all these roller coasters and all these different kinds of things you would expect to see at Disneyland or Magic Mountain or something like that.
- 8:31Larry Wilson: Insane.
- 8:34Larry Wilson: Within a few years, it had crashed and burned.
- 8:39Larry Wilson: They lost literally, if I had to estimate, I would guess billions of dollars.
- 8:45Larry Wilson: There were gigantic hotels built with, I'm sure if you go online, you can find photographs.
- 8:53Larry Wilson: On the strip, I don't mean within a block or two, I mean on the strip in Las Vegas, these amusement parks shuttered with weeds growing up through these rides.
- 9:07Larry Wilson: It was like that.
- 9:11Larry Wilson: And I only bring this up because I was saying to Scott, whoever sold that idea is some kind of evil genius to be able to convince people who'd had Las Vegas for 50, 60, 70 years as a playground for adults.
- 9:32Larry Wilson: That's what it always was.
- 9:34Larry Wilson: That was always the idea.
- 9:36Larry Wilson: Sometimes I would hear people say, oh, it's like Disneyland for adults.
- 9:42Larry Wilson: But the idea is you would go there and do all these things you're not supposed to do at home.
- 9:48Larry Wilson: Drink, smoke, gamble, do all stay up all night, be irresponsible.
- 9:55Larry Wilson: That was the idea of Las Vegas.
- 9:57Larry Wilson: And that's what made it hugely successful for decades.
- 10:01Larry Wilson: So how did someone convince them otherwise?
- 10:03Larry Wilson: I don't know.
- 10:04Larry Wilson: But that those same people are the ones who can, for example, sell a screenwriting course that has some information about screenwriting, but really is more about giving you permission unconsciously.
- 10:22Larry Wilson: He doesn't come out and say that.
- 10:24Larry Wilson: Well, that's genius.
- 10:29Larry Wilson: There are other things like that where I've seen all different kinds of niches, markets where someone purports to be teaching you something, and they don't really teach it to you, but you get something else out of it.
- 10:42Larry Wilson: Or in some cases, maybe you get nothing out of it.
- 10:46Larry Wilson: Oh God, there's in Mark Twain's greatest work, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, there's a point, uh, I won't go too far into the text here, but he hooks up with two con men who convince him or trying to convince Huck, and Huck, even as a kid, is too sophisticated to fall for it, but he just goes along that they're descendants of European royal tiers.
- 11:17Larry Wilson: These are guys who are like hobos.
- 11:19Larry Wilson: They're like they're con men.
- 11:21Larry Wilson: And they go to con little Midwestern town that they're passing through, uh, and they put on a show called The Royal Nunsuch.
- 11:37Larry Wilson: And they charge, I think, uh, if I remember correctly, an outrageous fee for the show.
- 11:46Larry Wilson: And I think it was a dollar for the show, which in the time frame of Huckleberry Finn is an outrageous amount of money.
- 11:55Larry Wilson: And one of them, there are these two guys are the Duke and the Dauphin, and they make up a poster for the show, and at the bottom it says, Women and children not admitted.
- 12:11Larry Wilson: And one of them says, if this doesn't get them in, I don't know Missouri.
- 12:17Larry Wilson: And of course, they're gonna be there three nights, and the first night, it's packed.
- 12:24Larry Wilson: Packed house.
- 12:25Larry Wilson: And they come, one of them comes out and he's painted in funny colors, and he prances around, and the audience laughs for a minute.
- 12:34Larry Wilson: And then whatever it is they do, it's really not very much.
- 12:38Larry Wilson: It's a few minutes of stuff, and they come out and they say, Thank you for coming tonight.
- 12:42Larry Wilson: And people in the audience say, What?
- 12:46Larry Wilson: That's it?
- 12:47Larry Wilson: And they say, Yes, thank you very much, and they leave.
- 12:49Larry Wilson: And so the next night, Huck Finn is, we're learning all this through Huck Finn's eyes.
- 12:57Larry Wilson: And he said, he thought, What are they doing?
- 12:59Larry Wilson: And they explain to him, they say, Oh, the next night it'll be a full house again.
- 13:06Larry Wilson: And he said, Won't they tell people?
- 13:09Larry Wilson: They don't want to appear foolish.
- 13:14Larry Wilson: They're gonna rope all their friends in so that they're all in the same predicament.
- 13:20Larry Wilson: And sure enough, the next night's full.
- 13:24Larry Wilson: Then the third night, as they're coming in, Huck realizes there's trouble afoot.
- 13:30Larry Wilson: He said, if I could smell a dead cat, there must have been two dozen of them.
- 13:36Larry Wilson: And they've brought stuff to pelt these guys with, and he knows they're gonna be run out of town on a rail, tarred and feathered.
- 13:47Larry Wilson: But of course, the Duke and the Dolphin have no intention of showing up for that third night.
- 13:53Larry Wilson: They've already collected the money and split town.
- 13:56Larry Wilson: This goes back probably to the first caveman who said, I have these rocks to sell, but they're not like the other rocks around here.
- 14:07Larry Wilson: These rocks can tell you when it will rain or something.
- 14:10Larry Wilson: I don't know.
- 14:11Larry Wilson: My point is, there have always been con men and hucksters.
- 14:16Larry Wilson: But when my wife was asking me what the Wilson method really was, she said, is it a personal development or is it meant for business?
- 14:31Larry Wilson: And I told her, I'm always happy to point out, I said, it clearly works for both.
- 14:39Larry Wilson: There are plenty of people who've trained with me in my boot camp, and they really were there for personal development things, and found extraordinary results from the things they learned there.
- 14:56Larry Wilson: But then there are also people who learned things that they'd come for business, and uh I'm sort of not being as clear as I could be, I'll give you an example.
- 15:08Larry Wilson: There was a man named Patrick, it's funny, who came from Germany.
- 15:14Larry Wilson: Patrick's not really a German name, is it?
- 15:17Larry Wilson: But he flew in from Germany to train with me in the boot camp because he had a specific need with his business.
- 15:26Larry Wilson: In his business, he had to approach people in real life, face to face, whom he didn't know, cold, and he was very uncomfortable doing that.
- 15:40Larry Wilson: He felt uncomfortable physically, he felt uncomfortable mentally, he didn't know exactly what to do or how to hold himself or how to speak or what he should say.
- 15:51Larry Wilson: All these problems that we solved very, very quickly and easily.
- 15:56Larry Wilson: And he uh he seemed to have a very positive experience in the boot camp.
- 16:06Larry Wilson: And in fact, uh I remember I wound up giving him a ride back to Los Angeles International Airport because we did this training in Los Angeles.
- 16:16Larry Wilson: And in the car, just in the last few minutes, he mentioned something about his wife, and he was talking about just very casually, you know, that it was sometimes difficult to talk with her, and you know uh he asked me if I had any idea.
- 16:34Larry Wilson: I said, well, you know, a lot of the stuff you learned here, you might be able to.
- 16:38Larry Wilson: It was like really no big deal.
- 16:41Larry Wilson: About a month after he trained with me, and he's back in Germany, uh, he sends me a video, and I think you can probably find this on my site, you can find it somewhere, I know it's out there, uh, because I'd posted it sometime, where he said, I wanted to tell you, when I first uh thought about coming and training with you, I wasn't sure I had some reservations, would it be worth the money?
- 17:07Larry Wilson: Would it be worth the expense of flying from Germany and getting hotels and everything else?
- 17:13Larry Wilson: He said, and I have to tell you, it was so great, and I got so much, and it's made the work I'm doing so much easier, and I'm having such a great time with it, but more importantly, uh bringing in more money.
- 17:28Larry Wilson: He said, it was a fantastic experience, and I'm thinking, oh good.
- 17:32Larry Wilson: He said, But something unexpected happened.
- 17:36Larry Wilson: He said, I've been back a couple of weeks when I realized that my wife and I were talking about things we hadn't talked about in 12 years of marriage.
- 17:52Larry Wilson: He said, I didn't realize at first, it's because I was doing all these Wilson method techniques.
- 17:59Larry Wilson: He said, they're so natural that they just become part of your normal daily life.
- 18:07Larry Wilson: They become automatic that you're doing them, which, of course, is the idea.
- 18:12Larry Wilson: I don't want you to have to screw your brain down and think, oh, how am I gonna do it?
- 18:17Larry Wilson: It's supposed to be very natural, and if you practice them regularly, day after day, it becomes easier and easier and easier.
- 18:25Larry Wilson: But Patrick had such a profound experience.
- 18:29Larry Wilson: Now, I know I'm supposed to be focused on business, but personally, I was just delighted to hear that from him.
- 18:39Larry Wilson: I thought, what a great thing.
- 18:41Larry Wilson: I should also point out, for those of you who are cynics, um he he wasn't saying we're we're talking about things we never talked about and now we're ready to kill each other.
- 18:50Larry Wilson: No, he's talking about how much better his relationship with his wife was and his marriage, how much uh happier he was, how much happier she was, how there were certain feelings of peace and tranquility in his home.
- 19:08Larry Wilson: And it was all just because of the way he was communicating with her.
- 19:15Larry Wilson: So, yes, Wilson method is intended specifically for people involved in business, but communication is human.
- 19:30Larry Wilson: If you happen to be a human, then it's liable to spill over into your personal life.
- 19:41Larry Wilson: But it can't have a negative effect because it's helping you connect with other humans on an authentic level.
- 19:55Larry Wilson: And maybe it's as simple as you smiling at someone when you purchase a cup of coffee.
- 20:03Larry Wilson: Maybe that's all that's different.
- 20:05Larry Wilson: Well, that's not liable to change your life so much.
- 20:09Larry Wilson: It certainly isn't going to affect your business.
- 20:11Larry Wilson: But it might make someone else feel good, might make you feel good, I don't know.
- 20:18Larry Wilson: It might be more profound than that.
- 20:20Larry Wilson: It might be like this guy Patrick, it might be involving your most important relationships, could easily be.
- 20:28Larry Wilson: But it makes perfect sense to me because although it is intended for business, it is about human skills.
- 20:41Larry Wilson: On a previous episode of this podcast, I know I I think I made reference to the rapid ascent of AI.
- 20:52Larry Wilson: I think it's great, I think it's fantastic.
- 20:55Larry Wilson: But it will never, ever replace human contact.
- 21:02Larry Wilson: It can substitute for it, it can be a rough approximation of it, but it can never really take the place of human contact.
- 21:16Larry Wilson: And so I hope that you'll join me next week for another episode of How to Talk to Humans.
- 21:24Larry Wilson: I do have a YouTube channel.
- 21:27Larry Wilson: I understand sometimes it's hard to find.
- 21:30Larry Wilson: It should be under the Wilson method.
- 21:34Larry Wilson: Or failing that, try Wilson method.
- 21:39Larry Wilson: If it's someone who looks like this, it's probably me.
- 21:44Larry Wilson: This has been Larry Wilson.
- 21:48Larry Wilson: I want to thank you for spending this time with me, and I hope you found this information useful.
- 21:55Larry Wilson: If you're looking for more, you can find it at thewilsonmethod.com.
- 21:59Larry Wilson: There's a ton of stuff there.
- 22:02Larry Wilson: In fact, if you want, you can even speak to me because I'm human.
- 22:08Larry Wilson: Send me an email at info at WilsonMethod.com because I read every single one.
- 22:17Larry Wilson: I hope that you'll join us next week in this continuing journey.
