Transcript
- 0:00But today I want to talk a little bit about one of the most
- 0:02confusing moments that the betraying partner feels early in
- 0:06recovery. And it's one of the most painful
- 0:08moments because the partner faces an after betrayal too.
- 0:12It's the moment where two different realities collide.
- 0:15One person says the Sky's blue. The other person says the Sky's
- 0:18green. And both feel absolutely certain
- 0:21that that's true. And this shows up in all sorts
- 0:24of ways. Maybe she, maybe the betrayed
- 0:27partner says you never have empathy.
- 0:29I feel like you are not having empathy.
- 0:31And he says I don't see it that way.
- 0:34I do feel like I have empathy and I do experience it that way.
- 0:37Or maybe there's about the past. Like I know this behavior
- 0:42occurred consistently and it wasn't that way.
- 0:45I feel like you didn't love me and the other person says I did
- 0:49love you even though I made those choices.
- 0:50So we call this the tension. It's the gap, and it's where so
- 0:54much misunderstanding and hurt lives.
- 0:56And today, I want to help you understand what's really
- 1:00happening beneath those moments and how to navigate them with
- 1:03honesty and empathy and integrity.
- 1:09Welcome to Beyond the Facade podcast.
- 1:11I'm your host, Luke Gordon, and I'm thrilled to have you join me
- 1:14in the space today. What we're going to be doing is
- 1:15diving deep into the trials and triumphs and truths of seeking
- 1:19authenticity. Becoming your true self isn't
- 1:22about a single action or a moment.
- 1:24It's a relentless pursuit, a commitment to self that reveals
- 1:27the rich connection and meaning that our life has to offer.
- 1:30So whether this is your first time tuning in or you're a
- 1:33regular listener, know this. What you're building here goes
- 1:36beyond a conversation. You're here to challenge, to
- 1:38change, and to celebrate the incredible journey of becoming
- 1:42your authentic self. Because when you dare to show
- 1:44up. Fully the.
- 1:45Rewards are immeasurable, so welcome to be on the facade.
- 1:48Let's get started. Let's talk first about the
- 1:53partners reality. OK, trauma logic.
- 1:56When trust has been broken, the body stops believing the surface
- 2:00level things. So partner who's been betrayed
- 2:03is living in trauma logic. So not because not because she's
- 2:08that person is being unreasonable, but because their
- 2:11nervous system is trying to protect them from further harm.
- 2:15Trauma logic sounds kind of like this.
- 2:18I need to know everything. I can't trust what I'm hearing.
- 2:22If I assume the best, I'll get blindsided again.
- 2:26And if I fill in the gaps with and what happens with a lot of
- 2:30the gaps are get filled in with worst case scenarios.
- 2:34Not because that's where they want to be, but they have to
- 2:37survive somehow. So they fill in the gaps.
- 2:41So when that person has going through that experience, there's
- 2:45going to be a lot of words used like always or never or a
- 2:49constant or everyday. And that person's expressing
- 2:53fear. And it's not necessarily so much
- 2:56literal timeline and accuracy, but their brains trying to
- 3:00create some safety in the absence of not being able to
- 3:03trust. So just recognize that person's
- 3:06not exaggerating, but they're trying to survive and they're
- 3:09trying to make sense of what their current reality is.
- 3:13And that deserves a lot of compassion.
- 3:16OK, so let's talk about his reality or the betraying
- 3:19person's reality. First thing we want to recognize
- 3:23on the other side, he's when recovery, what it consists of is
- 3:29coming out of denial. And can we just maybe give a
- 3:33little bit of space right now for denial isn't just about
- 3:36lying, but it's about, oh, what is it about?
- 3:41It's about like some fragmented memory.
- 3:44There's some emotional numbing in there.
- 3:46There's shame, distortion, there's a lot of
- 3:49compartmentalization. It's a brain protecting itself
- 3:52from discomfort. So when he's in those early
- 3:56stages of breaking through denial, he often doesn't
- 4:00actually know what full accuracy is yet.
- 4:03So he thinks he remembers, and he thinks he's telling the
- 4:07truth. And he is to the extent that his
- 4:10brain currently allows it. And that's not to be weaponized.
- 4:14Please do not allow your partner to hear you say, I don't know if
- 4:19I can see truth yet because Luke said it on a podcast, because
- 4:23that's not what I'm talking about.
- 4:24We're talking about coming out of the dial.
- 4:26But there's a shame filter here. There's a lens.
- 4:28So when he says something like, that's not how I remember it.
- 4:32It's not that it's necessarily minimizing, but he's describing
- 4:36the truth as he understands it at that moment.
- 4:39And that could be madding for the betrayed partner because
- 4:41they're like, why can't you see reality?
- 4:43That is not how it is. But there is so much energy
- 4:47built around seeing in a certain way to to live with self.
- 4:53So I recognize with a lot of the men that I work with, they do
- 4:57fully want to be honest and they do want to rebuild that trust.
- 5:00And he does want to be doing the right thing, but he but what's
- 5:05not baby recognize that he doesn't fully trust his own
- 5:08internal compass yet and that he's worked so hard to come into
- 5:12the reality is that in that moment, there's a protection of
- 5:16that reality. And rather than searching for a
- 5:18deeper level of what is actually going on, there's that
- 5:21protection of what already exists.
- 5:23And it gets in the way. It so gets in the way.
- 5:26So let's talk about the greatest misunderstanding here that
- 5:28exists. OK, So we have these two these
- 5:31two realities that clash. So the trauma says I need the
- 5:37worst case scenario to be true so I can protect myself.
- 5:40Now that's might somehow to be exaggerated, but think about it.
- 5:43If she lacks truth and she lacks reality, she's going to go to
- 5:47worst case scenario and at least there's something there to build
- 5:53something around so she can protect herself.
- 5:55Because if I go to worst case, at least I know what that is.
- 5:58And then I can build something around it because I if I don't
- 6:02at least have that, what do I have?
- 6:04But what is his denial? Recovery says something like I'm
- 6:08trying to tell the truth, but my truth is and my truth, I feel
- 6:13like I know what it is, but it's not perfectly clear yet.
- 6:17So those two interpretations are going to collide big time.
- 6:20So just remember, this isn't about failure and it's not about
- 6:24somebody being dramatic. It's not about someone being
- 6:27dishonest. It's a trauma and shame speaking
- 6:31different languages. OK, so let's redefine this
- 6:35accuracy and early recovery. So what we're after, first of
- 6:39all, is accuracy. So the men that I work with
- 6:42early in recovery, they're not capable of perfect factual
- 6:47accuracy because hold on, when I back that up and actually I
- 6:51don't want to edit that at all. I want that to be exist the way
- 6:54it came out of my mouth. But then I wanted to say, whoa,
- 6:56hold on. Men early in recovery are not
- 7:00capable of perfect factual accuracy in the sense of their
- 7:03fighting for it and they're trying to get to it and they
- 7:06battle with it. And they are willing to look at
- 7:09some thinking errors and go like, that feels like truth to
- 7:13me. That is true.
- 7:14And then willing to listen to their partner talk and be able
- 7:17to go to the deeper level of finding what reality actually is
- 7:19and that it's layered. Our brains are made to take what
- 7:23they can. And that is so painful for the
- 7:25betrayed partner going, that's not actually reality there.
- 7:29It's not about lying, and it's more about thinking like fog
- 7:34that's in the brain that hasn't fully lifted.
- 7:37So accuracy, an early recovery has to kind of be debris
- 7:40defined. Instead of expecting perfect
- 7:43recall, we're going to look for some things.
- 7:45So let's talk about some things that you can actually measure.
- 7:48So what does this mean? And you can measure this as a
- 7:50betrayed partner or as the partner doing the betraying.
- 7:55And what do they do? They speak the truth as they
- 7:57understand today. They saying, hey, this is what
- 7:59my truth is. They don't minimize it.
- 8:02They don't expect it to be somebody else's truth.
- 8:05They don't protect, they don't protect themselves using that
- 8:08truth. They don't exaggerate to appease
- 8:13their partner because sometimes that going along and just can
- 8:19feel like it will eliminate the conflict and it can feel good to
- 8:23betrayed partner. But it's not actually done out
- 8:25of integrity, it's done out of appeasing.
- 8:29So integrity accuracy also consists of being open to new
- 8:34awareness as denial breaks down. So my partner says this and
- 8:38instead of running from it, I listen to it and I seek to
- 8:40understand it And I don't just accept it, but I'm on to let it
- 8:45work inside of me to figure out what it is and what it's not.
- 8:48So it's not black and white. So what do they do?
- 8:51They also hold humility. And I would say actually not so
- 8:55much humility as compassion, knowing that my memory is going
- 8:57to expand as I've become open to new things and they stay
- 9:01accountable even when the details change.
- 9:03So it's like, and how painful is it to all of a sudden go like,
- 9:07oh shoot, I was protecting that and I didn't realize I was.
- 9:10I'll give you an example in my own recovery.
- 9:12I'll tell you something. I was dead set on protecting.
- 9:14It was just like, no, this is true.
- 9:16I remember my partner saying, hey, the way you interact with
- 9:20the opposite sex is not OK. In fact, you're, you're
- 9:24justifying and minimizing by like saying you have a female
- 9:27boss, a female supervisor, and you're she's calling you phrases
- 9:34like muffin or some other phrase.
- 9:40And what I would do is I'd be like, yeah, she does that to
- 9:42everybody. That's just how she is.
- 9:44Like she says, darling, whatever it might be.
- 9:47And my therapist called that out and he said some things.
- 9:51And I was like, no, that's not, I don't, I didn't invite that.
- 9:55I wasn't asking for. Her to.
- 9:56Call me that. And Olana was saying at the
- 10:00time, that's not appropriate and you got to put a stop to it.
- 10:02That's not OK. And I'm like, but I didn't ask
- 10:04for it. So I was like defending like
- 10:07this thing of me not doing anything wrong.
- 10:10And so it's and then as I let's go through these things, what
- 10:17was important for me to do? What was important for me to
- 10:19speak truth, as I understood today, which is don't run, Don't
- 10:23people please and say, yeah, you're right, just because that
- 10:26would ease the conflict. And then the other piece I said
- 10:29don't minimize to protect yourself.
- 10:31What did I do there? I was definitely minimizing.
- 10:33I was definitely saying, hey, she does that with everybody.
- 10:37So I got to a place where I was able to go hold on.
- 10:40Actually, she doesn't do that to everybody.
- 10:42She doesn't do a lot of people, but she doesn't do it to some.
- 10:46So started to not minimize the other one.
- 10:51I said don't exaggerate to a piece.
- 10:52Your partner. I already talked about that.
- 10:54Be open to new awareness as denial breaks down.
- 10:57So eventually because of recovery practices, I'm like,
- 11:00OK, wait, all right, my therapist is saying it, she's
- 11:03saying it. Who am I open to seeing maybe
- 11:07something differently? And then I did, I started to
- 11:09notice like, oh, actually I'm creating an environment where
- 11:13that her doing that is OK. I'm actually sending signals out
- 11:16there letting her know that to interact with me in that way,
- 11:20that I don't have boundaries and I'm OK with that.
- 11:23And I had to hold a lot of compassion for myself as my
- 11:27memory started to expand in this area, as I started to go, oh,
- 11:30you know what? Let me come back to how boundary
- 11:32less I am with her. Even though I'm not attracted to
- 11:35her physically, I'm still boundary less.
- 11:38So as I go and look at this, I'd have a lot of self compassion.
- 11:42And then I staying accountable is a way that you can check
- 11:45integrity accuracy here too. When those details change, going
- 11:49like, you know what, all right, I don't have to go to shame.
- 11:53There's some thinking errors that I had before.
- 11:56So I'm giving you an example here today where where is it did
- 12:00come. I did leave a level of denial
- 12:02and come into reality. And my partner Alana did use a
- 12:07lot of language that were was always and never that wasn't
- 12:12exactly accurate, but I didn't need that wasn't what I needed
- 12:15to focus on. I need to focus on my own
- 12:17experiences. So we're going to look for
- 12:20accuracy. That's important accuracy,
- 12:23that's realistic, that it's honest, and it's going to be a
- 12:28part of that. OK, so let's talk about this,
- 12:30the three parts of an integrity check.
- 12:33So when 2 realities collide, let's talk about a simple,
- 12:37powerful framework that I'm already technically I already
- 12:41ventured into. So I kind of wish I would have
- 12:44done this already, but it's the benchmark of knowing what you're
- 12:47doing is right, even when the details aren't perfect.
- 12:50Here's what we want to look for accuracy, not perfect accuracy,
- 12:54but integrity accuracy. That's what I talked about
- 12:56before. So say what you know, say what
- 12:59you remember, say what you don't know and what you're willing to
- 13:03keep exploring. All right, So that's the
- 13:05integrity accuracy part first and then empathic validation.
- 13:10So honor your partner's emotional experience without it
- 13:13necessarily. You don't have to agree so much
- 13:15with it with something that you are still trying to process
- 13:18through. You can name that, but I'm open
- 13:20to that. But I'm still processing through
- 13:22it. So you can say things like I
- 13:25understand why I feel why I felt inconsistent with empathy.
- 13:29I understand why your body goes to a worst case scenario.
- 13:33I get that that's terrifying. I could see that you're
- 13:35terrified. I can see that you're
- 13:37frustrated. So be empathic and validating
- 13:42and and just remember that validation reduces the threat
- 13:47that the nerve that her nervous system is experiencing through
- 13:50validation. You don't necessarily have to
- 13:53get that. She doesn't have to tell you
- 13:54like, Hey, I feel validated, but you going to state things
- 13:58authentically that are validating.
- 14:01And probably the one that's the hardest for me is doing exactly
- 14:04what I just said. There is.
- 14:05I can see that this is frustrating.
- 14:07I see the frustration State what it is that you see in your
- 14:11partner. All right, the third piece of
- 14:14the last one, first one is accuracy, second one's empathic
- 14:18validation, third one is regulation.
- 14:20So if when it comes to regulation, do I stay grounded?
- 14:24Do I collapse? Do I defend?
- 14:27Do I turn into an argument about who's right, checking with my
- 14:32regulation? So things that you can say I'm
- 14:36here, I'm not going anywhere I can sit with it is discomfort.
- 14:39We'll keep working through this together.
- 14:41Accuracy and validation and regulation is how the person
- 14:46with the betrayed builds trust even when truth is still
- 14:49unfolding and when they're not completely into reality yet if
- 14:53they have those three things. So let me give you a generalized
- 14:56example of what this might sound like a healthy response when
- 15:00you're in A2 reality moment, state your partner what you see
- 15:04them experiencing. I can see how overwhelming this
- 15:06feels of me not just agreeing with what you're seeing.
- 15:13And I want to be fully honest with you.
- 15:17I know I'm coming out of denial and I am open to exploring and
- 15:23getting further clarity of stuff that I'm missing.
- 15:26And I wanted to state to you what I see right now.
- 15:29So I'm going. I wanted to let you know I'm
- 15:30committed to truth telling and I don't want to minimize this
- 15:34version. I have, and I will continue to
- 15:38share with you the truth as it becomes clearer to me and just
- 15:41lean into that, Lean into the uncomfortableness of these two
- 15:44experiences as long as you're seeing hers.
- 15:47So the goal of recovery is not to agree on the exact same color
- 15:52of the sky in every moment. The goal is to understand why
- 15:55you're seeing it the way that you are and when you can hold
- 16:02your evolving truth with humility and stay connected to
- 16:06your partner and see and also stay what your partner's
- 16:13experiencing with compassion and sit there with them in that and
- 16:18explore that with them. Those two realities don't have
- 16:21to be enemies. They can become the beginning of
- 16:24something that's shared, which is a shared reality, and it
- 16:28doesn't happen right away. So just notice those things are
- 16:31a part of that that we talked about this podcast.
- 16:34So healing happens not when the details are perfect, but you
- 16:38don't stop fighting for those details.
- 16:40You don't stop exploring that so you can give your partner the
- 16:44reality, the thing the reality they need to heal.
- 16:47Anyway, thanks for spending some time.
- 16:49If there was anything about this that didn't make sense or you
- 16:51want more clarity on, I always value when you guys show up and
- 16:55send a note to me that says, hey, can you clarify this part
- 16:57or this part doesn't make any sense to me.
- 16:59But anyway, keep fighting and we'll talk to you next time.
- 17:04The holidays are coming and this is a time where if you're trying
- 17:08to heal from betrayal, can be such a emotional, hard,
- 17:13difficult time. It's a time where there is often
- 17:17so many external and internal pressures and expectations and
- 17:23triggers can be higher. And so as I thought about the
- 17:27holidays, I thought, how can I support you during the holidays?
- 17:31And so this year I am going to be offering a webinar series
- 17:37called A Season of Support. It's a free holiday series for
- 17:42couples. You can come as a couple, you
- 17:45can come by yourself. But what it is, is it's a time
- 17:50for you to really have some support to not only get you
- 17:55through the holidays, but help you not start out in January
- 17:59feeling further behind. The amount of people who come to
- 18:03me in January in crisis mode because they had put aside their
- 18:08healing work and they had just been in kind of a state of
- 18:12functional freeze through the holidays is so many.
- 18:17So what I would like to do is help support you to be able to
- 18:21keep doing your work, have support, have tools, and feel
- 18:24like you can make it through the holidays.
- 18:27So they'll be 4 weekly sessions. They're on Monday nights.
- 18:31It will be through a Zoom webinar.
- 18:33It is completely free. Some of the topics that will be
- 18:37included is holiday triggers, understanding, preparing and
- 18:42staying regulated, staying connected with each other in the
- 18:46chaos, tools for daily emotional bonding, preventing backsliding,
- 18:51accountability repair, keeping your healing work alive, and
- 18:55also how to enter January strong, how to enter that new
- 19:00year with a momentum in your healing.
- 19:02So we would love to have you there.
- 19:04You can find everything in the show notes and sending all the
- 19:08love and support this holiday season.
- 19:13Hey, thanks for joining us today if this.
- 19:15Is something that you connected with I'd love to meet with you
- 19:18more and talk about it So what you can do is go to
- 19:20chooserecoveryservices.com or check the show notes and there
- 19:24what we can do is set up a quick conversation we.
- 19:26Need thanks so much. For listening to beyond the
- 19:29facade where we unmask the authentic.
- 19:30Self.
