Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: You know, it could be Derek Dooley law, but it's
- 0:04Speaker 1: Clay Travis law. Accidents, they don't wait for perfect timing.
- 0:08Speaker 1: One bad moment, a wreck, a fall, a doctor who
- 0:10Speaker 1: wasn't paying attention. Suddenly, you are fighting an insurance company
- 0:14Speaker 1: that does this every single day. And that's why Clay
- 0:16Speaker 1: started Clay Travis Law. He's a Vanderbilt Law grad. He
- 0:19Speaker 1: built a firm around an idea that people deserve someone
- 0:22Speaker 1: willing to pay attention, ask the hard questions, push back
- 0:26Speaker 1: when things don't add up. experienced trial attorneys who bring
- 0:29Speaker 1: the fight to corporations and insurers based in Nashville. And Chad,
- 0:33Speaker 1: trusted across the country.
- 0:35Speaker 2: That's right, Hutton. Car and truck wrecks, rideshare accidents, medical malpractice,
- 0:38Speaker 2: premises liability, product liability. If you were wrong, they want
- 0:42Speaker 2: to hear about it. Here's what they promise. Honesty. They
- 0:45Speaker 2: don't sugarcoat your case. You'll hear what it's actually worth,
- 0:47Speaker 2: not what you want to hear. And the case evaluation
- 0:50Speaker 2: is free. No charge, no pressure, no hassle. Just tell
- 0:53Speaker 2: them your story. Go to claytravislaw.com or call 877- 222-4444.
- 0:57Speaker 2: That's claytravislaw.com. No case is too big or too small.
- 1:04Speaker 2: Maybe it could be Travis Dooley and Associates. It could
- 1:07Speaker 2: be a collaboration. Would it be Travis and Dooley or
- 1:11Speaker 2: would it be Dooley and Travis? Who would get the
- 1:14Speaker 2: higher mark on the marquee? That's the question.
- 1:17Speaker 3: Is this a real thing, by the way, this Clay
- 1:19Speaker 3: Travis Law?
- 1:20Speaker 1: It's real.
- 1:21Speaker 3: I mean, it's the first I've heard about it.
- 1:24Speaker 4: On one hand, I'm sitting there, and my first thought was,
- 1:26Speaker 4: this has got to be malpractice.
- 1:28Speaker 3: Right out of the gate.
- 1:29Speaker 4: But then I started thinking, you know, who better in
- 1:32Speaker 4: front of a jury than the great Clay Travis? And
- 1:36Speaker 4: then I'm really getting my feelings hurt that he didn't
- 1:38Speaker 4: call me to see if I could come join the firm.
- 1:41Speaker 3: I'm looking for a job right now anyway.
- 1:44Speaker 1: Here's your invitation right there. The SEC could call both
- 1:48Speaker 1: of you guys, right?
- 1:51Speaker 4: Well, they could, but I don't think they have any
- 1:53Speaker 4: interest because we would probably solve the problem too easily.
- 1:56Speaker 2: Why don't you make them all that, man?
- 1:59Speaker 1: Like the craziness of what Kiffin and LSU and just
- 2:03Speaker 1: the back and forth of the fact that we normally
- 2:05Speaker 1: don't see the SEC fight each other the way we.
- 2:08Speaker 2: Just saw this.
- 2:10Speaker 1: And we saw it happen, play out in real time
- 2:12Speaker 1: right before the season.
- 2:14Speaker 4: Well, I have so many thoughts just on that subject.
- 2:17Speaker 4: My opening thought is it's that old line. It's easy
- 2:21Speaker 4: to protest when somebody else is paying the price.
- 2:25Speaker 3: And kudos to the SEC.
- 2:28Speaker 4: For drawing the line in the sand and, you know,
- 2:32Speaker 4: really playing chicken with LSU on that. It reminded me
- 2:35Speaker 4: a little bit back in 1964. I don't know if
- 2:38Speaker 4: you guys know this, but Georgia Tech was in the SEC,
- 2:42Speaker 4: and they were kind of getting a little big for
- 2:45Speaker 4: their britches, Bobby Dodd flexing their muscles, and they didn't
- 2:48Speaker 4: like a rule the SEC passed. And they left the
- 2:51Speaker 4: SEC and it really, you know, absolutely changed the whole
- 2:56Speaker 4: trajectory of that program. And so I know LSU wasn't
- 3:00Speaker 4: willing to pay that price over two tight ends or
- 3:03Speaker 4: whatever it is. But, you know, the bigger issue is
- 3:07Speaker 4: it's just another piece of frustration that I've had in
- 3:12Speaker 4: what's going on in college athletics. And at some level,
- 3:15Speaker 4: I was hoping it would play out because we need
- 3:18Speaker 4: enough friction to to make a change. And it's been
- 3:22Speaker 4: my frustration with Congress. You know, you guys know I
- 3:25Speaker 4: ran for Senate last year, and that was one of
- 3:27Speaker 4: the things that motivated me, because I've always felt like
- 3:31Speaker 4: Congress just needs to do one simple thing, allow the
- 3:35Speaker 4: NCAA to make and enforce rules without the fear of
- 3:40Speaker 4: lawsuit and that preempt other state laws.
- 3:43Speaker 3: That's it. All right. And That's all they need.
- 3:47Speaker 4: And what I always said was the NCAA should have
- 3:50Speaker 4: gone in and said, look, give.
- 3:52Speaker 3: Us two years of protection to get our house in order.
- 3:55Speaker 3: Two years.
- 3:56Speaker 4: All we want is a little protection. We'll guarantee we're
- 4:00Speaker 4: going to protect women's sports. We're going to protect the
- 4:02Speaker 4: student athletes. And in two years, if we don't live
- 4:05Speaker 4: up to that, you can take it away. And that's
- 4:08Speaker 4: all they needed to ask for. But like everything else,
- 4:11Speaker 4: these bills get come up. Everybody wants, well, put this in,
- 4:14Speaker 4: put this in. Every time you put something in a bill,
- 4:17Speaker 4: you're just asking for more opposition. And so that's why
- 4:22Speaker 4: we're here where we are. It just doesn't make any
- 4:24Speaker 4: sense to me. It's not a hard problem. Let the
- 4:27Speaker 4: NCAA fix itself. But they can't do it until there's
- 4:30Speaker 4: not this constant lawsuit going over and over and over
- 4:34Speaker 4: every time they try to enforce something.
- 4:36Speaker 2: Were you surprised? Because every SEC program is kind of
- 4:40Speaker 2: its own bubble. And every town and every state has
- 4:43Speaker 2: a little bit of its own bubble. But I was
- 4:46Speaker 2: shocked at the level and the depths that LSU and
- 4:50Speaker 2: the state government and everyone was willing to go to
- 4:54Speaker 2: war for Lane Kiffin for so long. The answer seemed
- 4:58Speaker 2: to me to be obvious the whole time. The reward
- 5:01Speaker 2: is not worth the risk here for the players they're
- 5:03Speaker 2: trying to bring in with all the lawsuit threats and
- 5:06Speaker 2: they're going to kick you out. And it finally took
- 5:09Speaker 2: the report being leaked that, hey, this is happening. They're
- 5:12Speaker 2: going to vote on Thursday to remove LSU. And then
- 5:15Speaker 2: all of a sudden an email and a letter is
- 5:17Speaker 2: sent from Wade Roos, the president of LSU, to Greg
- 5:19Speaker 2: Sankey saying, we consider this a moot point. All right, guys,
- 5:23Speaker 2: you win. We filled out our roster. It's not going
- 5:25Speaker 2: to be them. Were you surprised it took that long
- 5:28Speaker 2: to get to that point, knowing what you know about LSU?
- 5:32Speaker 3: I wasn't.
- 5:33Speaker 4: And first of all, knowing what I know about Lane
- 5:36Speaker 4: Kiffin and knowing what I know about LSU, if you
- 5:40Speaker 4: guys recall, I spent five years there with Nick Saban
- 5:45Speaker 4: back in 2000. And listen, it was one of the
- 5:47Speaker 4: most fun five years of my coach. I absolutely love LSU.
- 5:51Speaker 4: I love the people down there. But the level of
- 5:54Speaker 4: passion that they have is it's pretty high on one end.
- 5:59Speaker 4: But also what they're willing to do. I mean, these
- 6:02Speaker 4: guys don't mind living in the gray area. I mean,
- 6:04Speaker 4: all you got to do is look at the history
- 6:06Speaker 4: of Louisiana politics. And, you know, they live in the gray.
- 6:10Speaker 4: They're not afraid to be different. Um, they're proud of
- 6:13Speaker 4: it as part of their culture. But like I said,
- 6:16Speaker 4: it's easy to sit there and protest, but until you
- 6:19Speaker 4: got to pay a price for it. And just like
- 6:22Speaker 4: you said, it wasn't worth that. And so I wasn't
- 6:25Speaker 4: surprised at both. I wasn't surprised at the fight, but
- 6:28Speaker 4: I also wasn't surprised that eventually they were going to
- 6:31Speaker 4: back down because they, uh, you know, the voice of
- 6:34Speaker 4: reason sort of played out.
- 6:37Speaker 2: You know, at one point, go ahead, hon. Oh yeah,
- 6:39Speaker 2: I got, yeah. At one point you took over. For
- 6:42Speaker 2: Lane Kiffin in Knoxville to be the head coach of Tennessee.
- 6:45Speaker 2: So you saw kind of the aftermath of a Lane
- 6:47Speaker 2: Kiffin coach program at that point. Do you buy into
- 6:51Speaker 2: that he wants this to be happening? That any talk
- 6:55Speaker 2: is good talk about his program and that? This is
- 6:58Speaker 2: sort of a, hey, I'm happy about this. You know,
- 7:00Speaker 2: that halftime speech was leaked about it's us against the world.
- 7:03Speaker 2: Everybody hates you. They don't want us to succeed, all
- 7:06Speaker 2: of that. Is this all good for Lane Kiffin? Or
- 7:10Speaker 2: do you think that maybe he stepped in a little
- 7:12Speaker 2: bit here and he didn't want it to go this far?
- 7:16Speaker 3: Well, I can't speak for Lane. So I don't want
- 7:20Speaker 3: to do it.
- 7:20Speaker 4: But the one thing, you know, everybody talks about change
- 7:25Speaker 4: and how much he– Lane has really not changed. He's
- 7:28Speaker 4: kind of had his formula everywhere he's been, and he's
- 7:32Speaker 4: mastered this era of social media, if we're just being honest.
- 7:36Speaker 3: He really has. It was something I never embraced.
- 7:39Speaker 4: I didn't like it, but he really owned it, and
- 7:43Speaker 4: he's become really popular. I mean, he's a celebrity in
- 7:47Speaker 4: a lot of ways. His popularity gets people excited, and
- 7:52Speaker 4: when he went to Ole Miss and started winning, That was,
- 7:56Speaker 4: you know, he parlayed that into this great job and
- 7:59Speaker 4: a lot of money.
- 8:00Speaker 3: And so he's mastered that social media.
- 8:04Speaker 4: And outrage a little bit in ways, you know, I
- 8:08Speaker 4: was at the Cowboys for five years, as you know,
- 8:11Speaker 4: and there was no such thing as bad press in
- 8:13Speaker 4: the eyes of Jerry Jones. I mean, he was the
- 8:16Speaker 4: master at building excitement and enthusiasm around a program that
- 8:21Speaker 4: And Lane's done the same thing, just in a different way.
- 8:24Speaker 3: And so who am I to criticize? He's had tremendous success.
- 8:28Speaker 4: He keeps, he got a lot of second and third
- 8:31Speaker 4: and fourth chances in his coaching career. And a lot
- 8:33Speaker 4: of that had to do with, you know, sort of
- 8:36Speaker 4: his popularity and the brand he's created.
- 8:40Speaker 1: Why do you think college game day is so nice
- 8:43Speaker 1: to him? Instead of bringing up this topic of what
- 8:46Speaker 1: went on and what we're all talking about, They're kind of,
- 8:50Speaker 1: you know, they're talking about, like, welcome to LSU and
- 8:52Speaker 1: it's all about football or whatever. And I'm thinking, man,
- 8:56Speaker 1: what is the background of this whenever everyone is vitriol
- 9:01Speaker 1: about this guy? He left his team and still wanted
- 9:04Speaker 1: to coach. And there's people on game day saying, yeah,
- 9:09Speaker 1: he should be able to. I don't understand that at all.
- 9:12Speaker 4: You guys in the media ought to understand it better
- 9:15Speaker 4: than anybody.
- 9:16Speaker 3: I can't get it.
- 9:16Speaker 4: You love guys that give you stories every day. So
- 9:20Speaker 4: why would they want Lane Kiffin to go away?
- 9:22Speaker 1: Because he's going to deliver.
- 9:24Speaker 3: The goods every day. Give me some.
- 9:27Speaker 4: Boy, it's getting boring here in college athletics. What's Lane
- 9:30Speaker 4: going to say that I can write about? And so
- 9:32Speaker 4: I've seen that in politics. I've seen that across the board.
- 9:36Speaker 4: You know, the media loves these controversial figures. Because it
- 9:40Speaker 4: gives them material, gives them clicks, and that's the world
- 9:43Speaker 4: we're in right now.
- 9:45Speaker 1: Hey, did you ever have a halftime speech like Kiffin delivered?
- 9:49Speaker 3: Well, I'm just glad a lot of my stuff wasn't recorded.
- 9:52Speaker 4: I'm not proud of a lot of things I said
- 9:55Speaker 4: in the locker room.
- 9:57Speaker 3: And I don't think any coach really wants it.
- 9:59Speaker 2: No.
- 9:59Speaker 3: But, you know, I mean, listen, I mean, Lane.
- 10:02Speaker 4: Was getting his guys going. I mean, I give him,
- 10:06Speaker 4: you know, you got to have a little chip on
- 10:08Speaker 4: your shoulder. And most teams that win typically have some
- 10:12Speaker 4: chip on their shoulder.
- 10:13Speaker 1: Yes.
- 10:14Speaker 3: And he's created that. He's created that. The world hates us.
- 10:18Speaker 3: It's us against them.
- 10:19Speaker 4: And that kind of mentality can really bring a team
- 10:23Speaker 4: together and motivate them.
- 10:25Speaker 3: And it certainly did that in game one.
- 10:27Speaker 4: And so that part, you know, I think he's done
- 10:30Speaker 4: a fabulous job of it. You know, the team wasn't distracted.
- 10:34Speaker 4: They're focused. They're playing together. And they got a little
- 10:37Speaker 4: rallying cry. And, you know, that's what you try to
- 10:39Speaker 4: do every year as a coach. Bring your team together.
- 10:42Speaker 4: Give them a little edge. Give them something to fight for.
- 10:45Speaker 4: And he's created that.
- 10:46Speaker 2: He's been great at it. We got to get into
- 10:49Speaker 2: the clock situation. Oh, yeah. Michigan and Western Michigan, because
- 10:52Speaker 2: I'm watching this and I recall sitting in what is
- 10:57Speaker 2: now Nissan Stadium at the Music City Bowl between Tennessee
- 11:01Speaker 2: and North Carolina. a game where you were the head coach,
- 11:04Speaker 2: and celebrating my alma mater, Tennessee, what I thought was
- 11:08Speaker 2: a win, only to see it later it wasn't a win,
- 11:12Speaker 2: and leaving that stadium so pissed off about what I
- 11:15Speaker 2: had just witnessed and not understanding fully what happened. And
- 11:19Speaker 2: that sparked not one but two rule changes that moment.
- 11:22Speaker 2: So you know a thing or two about clock issues
- 11:26Speaker 2: at the end of a football game, right?
- 11:28Speaker 4: Well, I've got to tell you, you know, there's– not
- 11:31Speaker 4: many coaches who can truly relate to what he went through.
- 11:34Speaker 4: But when I was watching that, I got a pit
- 11:37Speaker 4: in my stomach. I hurt so bad for him because
- 11:40Speaker 4: you're right. The music city bowl, we were playing North Carolina.
- 11:44Speaker 4: I'll never forget it. And of course we had a
- 11:47Speaker 4: game earlier in the year where it ended and we
- 11:50Speaker 4: got called back. But of course we made a lot
- 11:52Speaker 4: of mistakes in that one, but this one was egregious.
- 11:55Speaker 4: And as you said, They had like 18 men on
- 11:59Speaker 4: the field that clocked the ball. Two rules came out
- 12:02Speaker 4: of it. The 10 second runoff in college football, which
- 12:05Speaker 4: we didn't have at the time. And the clock rule
- 12:08Speaker 4: where you have to have three seconds to clock it.
- 12:10Speaker 4: If either one of those would have been implemented, which
- 12:13Speaker 4: they should have been, we would have won the game.
- 12:16Speaker 4: But I got to I got to say, you know,
- 12:19Speaker 4: and listen, don't forget, I was a part of the
- 12:21Speaker 4: Dez catch.
- 12:23Speaker 3: I was coaching Dez.
- 12:24Speaker 4: And then Blandino was defending this rule, and then all
- 12:28Speaker 4: of a sudden the NFL changed it. So I've been
- 12:31Speaker 4: a part of a lot of rule changes as a
- 12:33Speaker 4: result of some tough losses. What I will tell you
- 12:37Speaker 4: is I give that coach, Lance Taylor, just unbelievable, his
- 12:43Speaker 4: press conference. And he took full responsibility, took accountability. He
- 12:50Speaker 4: was proud of his team, did not complain about one
- 12:53Speaker 4: time It motivated me, guys. I went back and watched
- 12:57Speaker 4: my press conference. Because I watched his press conference. I said, man,
- 13:00Speaker 4: that was incredible. And I would like my son to
- 13:04Speaker 4: play for a guy like that. That's how you teach
- 13:06Speaker 4: young people. I went back and watched mine. It wasn't
- 13:09Speaker 4: as good as his. And, you know, I was young
- 13:13Speaker 4: and had a lot of piss and vinegar. And I
- 13:16Speaker 4: took responsibility. I said we could check. But, you know,
- 13:18Speaker 4: I just couldn't let go. I was really angry. It
- 13:22Speaker 4: affected me, and, you know, so I give him a
- 13:25Speaker 4: lot of props. That's what great leadership looks like.
- 13:28Speaker 2: Well, and you talked about the rules then, but also
- 13:32Speaker 2: the difference in response now with immediately in the aftermath,
- 13:37Speaker 2: it was you got the president of Western Michigan up there.
- 13:40Speaker 2: You got Lance Taylor, the coach, and they're like, hey,
- 13:42Speaker 2: we talked to him. They were transparent. We talked to
- 13:45Speaker 2: Tony Petitti in the Big Ten. They showed us what happened.
- 13:48Speaker 2: We buy what they're saying. We're okay with it. It's unfortunate.
- 13:52Speaker 2: but we understand what they're saying. And then a couple
- 13:53Speaker 2: of days later, coach, they come back and say, after
- 13:56Speaker 2: further investigation, we don't buy their explanation. They didn't do
- 14:01Speaker 2: the right thing by using a clock that wasn't the clock,
- 14:04Speaker 2: which we all know there's a clock, not two clocks
- 14:07Speaker 2: in a sporting contest. And they went off some other
- 14:10Speaker 2: clock and saying that now they're going to fight it
- 14:12Speaker 2: with the NCAA. They're going to fight it with a
- 14:14Speaker 2: college football playoff committee. What do you think about the
- 14:17Speaker 2: two responses? The initial one, followed by the follow-up once
- 14:22Speaker 2: we start to get some more information about these two clocks?
- 14:26Speaker 4: Well, when I heard about the initial one, I thought
- 14:29Speaker 4: they had jumped the gun, to be frank with you.
- 14:33Speaker 3: And look, I want to put this in two buckets.
- 14:36Speaker 4: The coach, Coach Taylor, he needs to stay focused on,
- 14:40Speaker 4: we take full responsibility and they got to get their
- 14:43Speaker 4: eyes full. But as an administrator and an AD, You
- 14:48Speaker 4: need to figure out, number one, if there was some
- 14:51Speaker 4: funny business going on. And then number two, we got
- 14:54Speaker 4: to make sure this never happens again. Now, the number
- 14:56Speaker 4: two part, it seems, has already been corrected. The NCAA
- 15:00Speaker 4: put out, you know, an issue. And listen, I've always
- 15:03Speaker 4: said this, too, about instant replay and all this other crap.
- 15:06Speaker 4: It drives fans nuts. And I said, you know what
- 15:09Speaker 4: we need? We need a drunk fan standard. If a
- 15:13Speaker 4: drunk fan at the bar can look at the replay
- 15:16Speaker 4: and and make an easy decision, and they're all in agreement,
- 15:19Speaker 4: that's what the decision should be. They get in all
- 15:22Speaker 4: these technicalities and all this crap, and nobody buys all that.
- 15:27Speaker 4: But I would make sure from an administrative standpoint, I
- 15:31Speaker 4: would like to see fully transparent how that process went about.
- 15:37Speaker 4: And they need to prove what went wrong and how
- 15:40Speaker 4: it went wrong. But look, I'm going to take them
- 15:42Speaker 4: for their word until something else comes out. I think
- 15:45Speaker 4: the most important thing through it all is this won't
- 15:48Speaker 4: happen again because the NCAA issued the rule, which should
- 15:52Speaker 4: have been in place from the beginning, that we're going
- 15:54Speaker 4: to lean on what the fans are seeing. And, you know,
- 15:58Speaker 4: the last point on this is one of my frustrations
- 16:01Speaker 4: with college football so much.
- 16:04Speaker 3: Is we have all these rules. What should we do here?
- 16:08Speaker 3: What should we do here? But then what?
- 16:10Speaker 4: Over in this bucket, we have the NFL, who has
- 16:14Speaker 4: pumped billions of dollars into creating the greatest product in
- 16:18Speaker 4: all of sports. And you can learn from what they do.
- 16:22Speaker 4: They've done all the research. They've done all this. And
- 16:25Speaker 4: it's just so easy to adopt what they do. And
- 16:28Speaker 4: the NFL already had that rule in place, and college didn't.
- 16:34Speaker 1: Oh, by the way, the drunk fan. Are we talking
- 16:35Speaker 1: blackout drunk like LSU or Kentucky?
- 16:39Speaker 3: The reasonably drunk fan.
- 16:41Speaker 4: You know, maybe four or five beers in you or something.
- 16:44Speaker 1: Yeah, you and I could play that role.
- 16:45Speaker 2: Yeah, you've got to be conscious. Like, you can't be
- 16:48Speaker 2: passed out. But you've got to be able to. Your eyes,
- 16:50Speaker 2: both eyes are open, and you've got a little buzz
- 16:53Speaker 2: going and you're watching the game. I like the drunk
- 16:55Speaker 2: fan standard.
- 16:57Speaker 4: Or, you know, I used to have this. My wife, Allison,
- 17:01Speaker 4: I would call it the Allison rule. You know, she
- 17:03Speaker 4: would just look at it and go, well, that's a catch.
- 17:07Speaker 4: She doesn't know all the technicality. And, you know, when
- 17:09Speaker 4: you peel back, I'm like, she's right. I mean, what
- 17:11Speaker 4: are we doing?
- 17:13Speaker 2: And I heard the different media members and people defending it.
- 17:17Speaker 2: Heather Denich at ESPN, I'm watching the next morning saying, hey,
- 17:20Speaker 2: I talked to the Big Ten, and it's perfectly reasonable.
- 17:23Speaker 2: Their clock showed this, and I'm thinking, I go back
- 17:26Speaker 2: to A Few Good Men where he asked them, Tom
- 17:29Speaker 2: Cruise asked Jack Nicholson, why the two orders? I'm thinking,
- 17:32Speaker 2: why the two clocks? How are we talking about two clocks?
- 17:36Speaker 2: How are we seeing something totally different? NBC's explaining it,
- 17:39Speaker 2: that we are synced up with the stadium, the stadium
- 17:42Speaker 2: clock in Ann Arbor, and somehow they're seeing a different clock.
- 17:46Speaker 2: I'm with you in that it's so obvious that it
- 17:50Speaker 2: should have been done immediately. Now, let me ask you
- 17:52Speaker 2: this moving forward. Is there any chance in your mind,
- 17:56Speaker 2: because you've been an AD before also, that anything actually
- 18:00Speaker 2: comes of this in terms of that game being overturned
- 18:03Speaker 2: in any way, and Michigan getting a loss and Western
- 18:06Speaker 2: Michigan getting the win? Because the Big Ten's basically admitted
- 18:08Speaker 2: fault now by saying they're going to show their replay
- 18:11Speaker 2: system to everyone moving forward.
- 18:14Speaker 4: Look, that's where I think we have to be careful
- 18:17Speaker 4: how we go forward on this. I do not believe
- 18:20Speaker 4: that they will be given the win. I mean, they're
- 18:23Speaker 4: not the first or last team who's been screwed. I mean,
- 18:27Speaker 4: think about the fifth down. I could go all through
- 18:29Speaker 4: college football history. I think the more important thing that
- 18:34Speaker 4: they need to do is figure out if something went wrong,
- 18:37Speaker 4: and there needs to be accountability for those people that
- 18:41Speaker 4: did something wrong.
- 18:42Speaker 3: But as far as getting that win.
- 18:43Speaker 4: Back, I mean– Hey, listen, you know, one of the
- 18:46Speaker 4: hardest things we have in society now is bad things happen.
- 18:51Speaker 4: Sometimes things aren't fair and you got to learn to
- 18:54Speaker 4: move on and deal with it.
- 18:56Speaker 3: You know, that's sort of how my generation grew up.
- 18:59Speaker 4: Nowadays, we have a generation when anything seems unfair, you know.
- 19:04Speaker 3: We got to get something back in return.
- 19:06Speaker 4: And it's like, I think the most important thing is
- 19:10Speaker 4: the consequences for the people who ever did anything wrong,
- 19:13Speaker 4: if they did something wrong in the first place. But
- 19:15Speaker 4: as far as getting the win back, I just don't
- 19:17Speaker 4: see that happening. You talk about a slippery slope. Here
- 19:21Speaker 4: we go. I mean, there may be lawsuits retroactive now,
- 19:25Speaker 4: getting wins.
- 19:26Speaker 1: So, I don't know, is LSU your top team right
- 19:29Speaker 1: now in the SEC? And what happens to that ranking
- 19:31Speaker 1: if Texas beats Ohio State? Georgia, of course, right there.
- 19:35Speaker 1: How do you kind of tier this as we go
- 19:37Speaker 1: into the heart of the season?
- 19:39Speaker 4: I still have concerns about LSU. And look, first of all,
- 19:42Speaker 4: I'm a homer, man. I'm all in for the dogs.
- 19:45Speaker 4: I'm all in for Kirby.
- 19:47Speaker 3: I think Gunner, you know, when you watch Georgia, first game,
- 19:50Speaker 3: now look, they didn't play anybody. I acknowledge that.
- 19:53Speaker 4: But it was about as clean a two quarters as
- 19:56Speaker 4: I've ever seen any team Kirby's.
- 19:58Speaker 3: Put out there. It was unbelievable.
- 20:00Speaker 4: And Gunner, Gunner, I think, is the most underrated quarterback
- 20:04Speaker 4: in college football. You know, everybody looks because he's got
- 20:07Speaker 4: great character and he's six feet tall. They just assume
- 20:11Speaker 4: he's just a gritty guy and that's it. What's underrated
- 20:15Speaker 4: are two things to me. I think he's the most
- 20:17Speaker 4: accurate passer in the SEC. Pure accuracy. And go watch
- 20:21Speaker 4: the tape. And the second thing is, look at his
- 20:24Speaker 4: clutch production.
- 20:25Speaker 2: Yes.
- 20:26Speaker 3: He plays better the more important the down is.
- 20:30Speaker 2: All right.
- 20:30Speaker 4: It's like that old saying, you got to play your
- 20:33Speaker 4: best when your best is needed. Nobody did that better
- 20:36Speaker 4: in Gunner Stockton last season. And just look at the
- 20:39Speaker 4: games when it was all on the line. You guys
- 20:41Speaker 4: remember the Tennessee one.
- 20:43Speaker 3: Okay.
- 20:44Speaker 4: And he's the only quarterback, by the way, that's won
- 20:46Speaker 4: an SEC championship. So let's don't forget that. So I'm
- 20:50Speaker 4: high on the dogs. Now, you look at the three
- 20:53Speaker 4: most talented rosters, in my opinion. Georgia, Texas, LSU. Talented
- 20:59Speaker 4: across the board. So then you go, well, who are
- 21:02Speaker 4: the quarterbacks? Arch, we all know he's super talented. I
- 21:07Speaker 4: think the two things Arch has to prove this year is, one,
- 21:10Speaker 4: his accuracy.
- 21:12Speaker 3: It's been inconsistent.
- 21:13Speaker 4: But the bigger issue is, in the biggest games against
- 21:17Speaker 4: the most elite defenses, when the pressure's coming, how are
- 21:21Speaker 4: you going to perform?
- 21:22Speaker 3: And that's the big hurdle he's got to clear.
- 21:24Speaker 4: I mean, you look at Just last year, I think
- 21:27Speaker 4: Ohio State seven points, Georgia 10 points. They played OU.
- 21:31Speaker 4: I think he only had about 160 yards passing. You know,
- 21:34Speaker 4: so that's going to be the key for Arch. Now,
- 21:36Speaker 4: you look at LSU's Sam Leavitt. I got real concerns
- 21:40Speaker 4: about his accuracy. And you saw it in the first drive.
- 21:44Speaker 4: A pick happens. And more importantly, when he's under pressure,
- 21:48Speaker 4: what happens? But what he's done in the.
- 21:51Speaker 3: Past is his legs have bailed him out.
- 21:54Speaker 4: And so the team that can apply pressure but keep
- 21:57Speaker 4: him in the pocket and force him to make throws,
- 22:00Speaker 4: I think that's going to be their Achilles heel. But
- 22:03Speaker 4: time will tell. Listen, week one, one thing I learned.
- 22:07Speaker 4: You never judge anything by week one. It's even more
- 22:10Speaker 4: prevalent in today's environment because these rosters are all new. Hell,
- 22:14Speaker 4: I'm going around going, where was he last year? It's
- 22:19Speaker 4: so hard the first week, all these quarterbacks. Wait, I
- 22:22Speaker 4: remember seeing this guy. Wasn't he on that team?
- 22:26Speaker 2: Chad, this has been awesome. It's been great. I got
- 22:28Speaker 2: one more for you because I was reminded of your
- 22:31Speaker 2: press conferences in listening to Brent Key at Georgia Tech
- 22:35Speaker 2: this week because– You know, they were talking about the
- 22:37Speaker 2: Tennessee matchup this week with Georgia Tech. And a reporter said, hey,
- 22:42Speaker 2: Josh Heupel was talking. He said he expects a really
- 22:44Speaker 2: physical game. And Brent Key jumped in and said, oh,
- 22:47Speaker 2: he did. He's like, was that before or after our
- 22:50Speaker 2: last game? And he said it was after the last game.
- 22:52Speaker 2: And he said, well, then Josh is being nice because
- 22:54Speaker 2: we were soft. in our first game of the year.
- 22:57Speaker 2: So if he thinks it's going to be physical, then
- 22:58Speaker 2: he's just being nice to us because we weren't physical
- 23:01Speaker 2: at all. And I'm like, I like that bit of
- 23:03Speaker 2: honesty from Brent Key, a guy who has built that
- 23:06Speaker 2: program around toughness and running the football, right? What do
- 23:10Speaker 2: you think about that and that level of transparency and honesty?
- 23:15Speaker 2: But also, like you mentioned earlier, probably a way to
- 23:18Speaker 2: motivate his football team to not look the way they
- 23:20Speaker 2: did on that Thursday night game against Colorado.
- 23:23Speaker 4: Well, I'm a big fan of Brent Key, but I
- 23:25Speaker 4: can't say I'm a fan of Tapp being a Georgia guy. But,
- 23:29Speaker 4: you know, I was probably too honest, Chad. I think
- 23:33Speaker 4: there's probably a balance of honesty and transparency, but, you know,
- 23:36Speaker 4: you can.
- 23:36Speaker 3: Also affect your team by being too honest.
- 23:39Speaker 4: You know, you got to get a player to believe
- 23:41Speaker 4: he can do things that he doesn't think he can believe.
- 23:44Speaker 4: And I look back and that might have been one
- 23:47Speaker 4: of many faults that I had as a coach. Man,
- 23:50Speaker 4: I'd call it like it was and maybe that wasn't
- 23:53Speaker 4: the best motivating.
- 23:54Speaker 3: Tactic for some of our players.
- 23:55Speaker 4: You know, the great coaches really I've been around have
- 23:59Speaker 4: an element of brainwashing their players into thinking there's something
- 24:02Speaker 4: they're not.
- 24:03Speaker 3: And so I think it was a great line.
- 24:06Speaker 4: I love Brent, but I'm pretty confident he's going to
- 24:09Speaker 4: rally after that first game. That was a tough loss
- 24:12Speaker 4: for him. So that'll be an interesting one. And, you know, look,
- 24:15Speaker 4: the other interesting game for me this week is Oklahoma, Michigan.
- 24:19Speaker 2: Yep.
- 24:20Speaker 4: And, you know, I think Oklahoma better be careful because,
- 24:24Speaker 4: you know, it's easy to sit there and say Michigan's
- 24:27Speaker 4: no good after that first one. Man, you talk about
- 24:30Speaker 4: backs against the wall, hungry to prove something. And it
- 24:33Speaker 4: might have been even more so had they lost. So
- 24:37Speaker 4: that'll be a big test. And, you know, I'm kind
- 24:40Speaker 4: of hoping selfishly Oklahoma wins so we can get a
- 24:43Speaker 4: 330 kick in Athens instead of a night game.
- 24:47Speaker 1: I won't be too honest, by the way. The honesty,
- 24:51Speaker 1: I think it's happening in Indiana. It's happening in Oregon.
- 24:53Speaker 1: It's happening in Michigan this week with their quarterback and
- 24:56Speaker 1: head coach. And it works. It works with those programs.
- 25:01Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 25:02Speaker 3: Well, hey, listen, it's great to be here, man.
- 25:05Speaker 4: I talked about state for the last year when I
- 25:09Speaker 4: lost my mind and went to politics.
- 25:11Speaker 3: It's good to get back.
- 25:12Speaker 4: In the sport mode. And so I appreciate you guys
- 25:15Speaker 4: having me on. And I hope to be back.
- 25:18Speaker 2: We are two guys that are way more in sport
- 25:20Speaker 2: mode than state mode also. So we appreciate you joining us.
- 25:24Speaker 2: Thanks for the intro to the show too, Coach. Really
- 25:26Speaker 2: appreciate it. We'll get you on again soon to talk
- 25:28Speaker 2: some ball. Thank you so much.
- 25:29Speaker 1: PlayTravisLaw.com if you need a job.
- 25:32Speaker 2: PlayTravisLaw.com, Coach. That's right. Thank you. Thank you, bud.
- 25:37Speaker 1: He's awesome, man. I love Dooley so much.
- 25:41Speaker 2: He's also great because he has a reference to everything. Absolutely.
- 25:47Speaker 2: He was an athletic director at Louisiana Tech and a
- 25:49Speaker 2: head coach. He's been a head coach in the SEC
- 25:51Speaker 2: at Tennessee. He's been a coordinator in the SEC at Missouri.
- 25:55Speaker 2: He worked for Nick Saban for years. He coached for
- 25:59Speaker 2: Jerry Jones, the Dallas Cowboys. In the NFL, he's been
- 26:02Speaker 2: a lawyer like Clay and has that legal background too.
- 26:05Speaker 2: So that will not be the last time you see
- 26:07Speaker 2: Derek Dooley on this show.
- 26:08Speaker 3: Love that one.
- 26:09Speaker 2: I would say this too. You don't learn how to
- 26:12Speaker 2: do this.
- 26:12Speaker 1: This is a gift. You're able to speak to somebody
- 26:15Speaker 1: for five minutes and you feel like you've known them
- 26:17Speaker 1: for five years. That's Derek Dooley because he has a
- 26:20Speaker 1: reference to everything that he can, and a scope that's
- 26:23Speaker 1: a lot of fun. We need to get the historical
- 26:27Speaker 1: references going too, some history lessons, Chad.
- 26:30Speaker 2: The drunk fan standard. I'll remember that now.
- 26:32Speaker 1: The drunk fan standard is.
- 26:33Speaker 2: Drunk fan standard for replay is perfect.
- 26:36Speaker 1: I mean, he's the commissioner of that league right there.
- 26:40Speaker 2: Hey, Hutton, you mentioned it. I want to get into
- 26:42Speaker 2: it in the next segment. Bryce Underwood.
- 26:44Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 26:45Speaker 2: A budding rivalry between head coach and quarterback. We've got
- 26:48Speaker 2: to discuss.
- 26:49Speaker 1: And there's a new standard in Michigan with that, too.
- 26:51Speaker 1: But it's being said. It's Hutton Withrow here at Sporting State.
- 26:55Speaker 1: David Crockett, a volunteer. Davy Crockett and Crockett Coffee. Started
- 27:00Speaker 1: by Clay Travis, Buck Sexton, and Buck's brother, Mason. Named
- 27:04Speaker 1: after Davy Crockett, the hunter, storyteller, patriot, backwoods legend. Look
- 27:09Speaker 1: at the logo. It tells you all about the attitude here. 100%
- 27:11Speaker 1: pure Arabica. High altitude beans. Small batch roasted right here
- 27:17Speaker 1: in America. Tennessee, the heart of the country. It ships
- 27:20Speaker 1: fresh roasted. It's not sitting on a warehouse shelf for
- 27:22Speaker 1: six months. And you can get the light, medium, dark roast.
- 27:26Speaker 1: The dark roast called King Mountain Roast. decaf, organic, even
- 27:30Speaker 1: a mushroom blend, whole bean ground or K-cups, however you
- 27:34Speaker 1: make it in the morning.
- 27:36Speaker 2: However you want it. However you want it with your
- 27:38Speaker 2: subscription also. You can set up that subscription, shows up
- 27:41Speaker 2: on your schedule, change or cancel at any time as
- 27:44Speaker 2: the free market intended. Free shipping on orders of $ 59
- 27:47Speaker 2: or more. And there's a discount for veterans. And Crockett
- 27:50Speaker 2: partners with Tunnels to Towers, building mortgage-free homes for the
- 27:53Speaker 2: families of fallen service members and for catastrophically injured veterans.
- 27:57Speaker 2: And first responders, good coffee, made in America, doing some good, CrockettCoffee.com.
- 28:02Speaker 2: That's Crockett, C-R-O-C-K-E-T-T, coffee.com. Hutton, I've got to raise something
- 28:09Speaker 2: here before we get into Michigan and Bryce Underwood. Okay.
- 28:12Speaker 2: Just talk to Derek Dooley about the whole issue at
- 28:14Speaker 2: LSU versus the SEC and them eventually relenting. The amount
- 28:20Speaker 2: of LSU fans, I am all for you defending your school, okay?
- 28:25Speaker 2: But the amount of fans, not just fans, Glenn Gilbo,
- 28:27Speaker 2: a guy that we worked with, who's written a column
- 28:29Speaker 2: about this and continues to tweet me about it, acting
- 28:33Speaker 2: like LSU won something in this, that they exposed the SEC. How?
- 28:39Speaker 2: I do not understand this, okay? Philip writes, I'm going
- 28:42Speaker 2: to read this tweet and then explain. This is like
- 28:45Speaker 2: our old mashed carrots back in the day. I don't
- 28:47Speaker 2: see it that way. I see is LSU exposed the
- 28:50Speaker 2: weakness in the rules from the NCAA and the SEC.
- 28:53Speaker 2: Rules sometimes don't get solidified until challenged. That's how most
- 28:57Speaker 2: of the rules of law are created. Rule or non-defined
- 29:00Speaker 2: rules have to be challenged to get the final rule
- 29:03Speaker 2: or law. If you are arguing this, you are arguing
- 29:07Speaker 2: that LSU did this in order to implement a rule
- 29:11Speaker 2: that wasn't on the books, which it was, by the way,
- 29:14Speaker 2: about playing people who had signed pro contracts, It's against
- 29:18Speaker 2: the rules. There's just been separate people who have filed
- 29:21Speaker 2: motions in courts to say that it's not against the rules.
- 29:24Speaker 2: But if you're arguing that you're acting like LSU was
- 29:26Speaker 2: this white knight who had to challenge the system in
- 29:30Speaker 2: order to define a rule, when in fact you are arguing, well,
- 29:34Speaker 2: they exposed the weakness of the SEC. The weakness of
- 29:38Speaker 2: the SEC that was exposed... when you submitted to the
- 29:41Speaker 2: rule of the SEC. In the end of all this,
- 29:44Speaker 2: this thing ended when LSU bowed down and sent a
- 29:50Speaker 2: letter to the commissioner saying, hey, we're all on the
- 29:53Speaker 2: same team here. We agree. This issue is now moot.
- 29:56Speaker 2: We've fully rostered non-NFL players on our roster as you
- 30:02Speaker 2: wished and as SEC rules allow. We're living in a
- 30:07Speaker 2: fantasy land here, if you think it's anything other than that.
- 30:10Speaker 1: This is no different, I think, than the major college
- 30:13Speaker 1: football towns where you're in your own bubble and it's
- 30:16Speaker 1: an echo chamber.
- 30:17Speaker 2: Oh, sure.
- 30:18Speaker 1: Where you have the Attorney General saying they're going to
- 30:21Speaker 1: take all measures. It's headline news more than it is sports.
- 30:27Speaker 1: The governor, again, and Dooley pointed out the history of
- 30:33Speaker 1: the Louisiana government getting involved in athletics, but even the
- 30:37Speaker 1: Attorney General's commenting that Sankey got up there and refused
- 30:39Speaker 1: to answer questions, acting like he didn't know answers to
- 30:42Speaker 1: certain rules. And that's where they're trying to say they exposed. Well, again,
- 30:48Speaker 1: it's stupid, but that's the echo. They're repeating what they're
- 30:53Speaker 1: hearing in their reports.
- 30:55Speaker 2: We're going to tie this back to Michigan and Western Michigan.
- 31:00Speaker 2: There are times where there's not a clear-cut winner and loser.
- 31:03Speaker 2: That is an example. Western Michigan should have won that game.
- 31:06Speaker 2: They didn't. Michigan got the extra play. There's some gray
- 31:09Speaker 2: area there. You're really searching for the gray area to
- 31:14Speaker 2: not see what everyone else, everyone that's not associated with
- 31:17Speaker 2: the state of Louisiana or LSU sees this very clearly.
- 31:21Speaker 2: You are the exception. You are the problem. If you
- 31:24Speaker 2: do not understand that the way this thing ended was
- 31:28Speaker 2: you tried to do something The SEC said, don't do it.
- 31:32Speaker 2: You continue to try to do it. The SEC threatened
- 31:35Speaker 2: you with expulsion. You continue to act like you were
- 31:38Speaker 2: going to do it. And finally, the day before the
- 31:40Speaker 2: vote was going to happen or two days before, you
- 31:43Speaker 2: relented and you said, you're right. You're our daddy. We
- 31:47Speaker 2: won't do it. And that is a loss for you.
- 31:51Speaker 2: That's clear cut. Now, if you want to get into
- 31:54Speaker 2: the real losers here or the players that got duped
- 31:56Speaker 2: into leaving and trying to get cut from their NFL
- 32:00Speaker 2: team or wanting to do this other than that, that's
- 32:02Speaker 2: a separate issue. I'm going to tell you the true
- 32:04Speaker 2: loser in this, Hutton. If they sue LSU and it
- 32:08Speaker 2: goes to discovery and they have to start to show
- 32:11Speaker 2: text and and calls that were made from Lane Kiffin's
- 32:15Speaker 2: staff to these players to get them to violate an
- 32:18Speaker 2: NFL contract. LSU's already a loser in this. You could
- 32:21Speaker 2: be a true loser if it comes to that point,
- 32:24Speaker 2: and you're found to have been tampering with NFL contracts
- 32:27Speaker 2: or players that were currently on an NFL roster at
- 32:29Speaker 2: that point. That's neither here nor there. We're shutting the
- 32:32Speaker 2: book on that for now. Bryce Underwood in Michigan.
- 32:35Speaker 1: I just want to add in, that would also be
- 32:38Speaker 1: tied to Rosenhaus. Instead of just the team or the player,
- 32:43Speaker 1: it would be Rosenhouse Sports who's really pumping it from
- 32:46Speaker 1: the player's perspective.
- 32:48Speaker 2: He's representing the player.
- 32:49Speaker 1: And I think the reaction from the fans specifically, the
- 32:55Speaker 1: average drunk fan, as Dooley said, I would say this
- 33:00Speaker 1: reaction would have happened at the major level of college
- 33:04Speaker 1: programs at Ole Miss last year if Kiffin had stayed.
- 33:07Speaker 1: the fan base would be up in arms over this.
- 33:09Speaker 1: Same thing at Texas. The list goes on and on.
- 33:13Speaker 1: Certainly at Ohio State, we would be seeing the same
- 33:16Speaker 1: reaction in that area. I don't know about from the
- 33:19Speaker 1: government perspective, but from the fan base perspective on socials,
- 33:23Speaker 1: for sure. They act like they're good enough.
- 33:26Speaker 3: They're good as it is.
- 33:28Speaker 1: I don't think one of the players would have even started.
- 33:30Speaker 1: I think he was a third stringer.
- 33:32Speaker 2: We know how fans react to things, so I'm not
- 33:34Speaker 2: shocked or surprised at By that, you're just really reaching
- 33:39Speaker 2: if it's like we're exposing something here. Your goal was
- 33:43Speaker 2: to play those players. Just a week ago, all LSU
- 33:46Speaker 2: fans were arguing how they should be allowed to play.
- 33:48Speaker 2: And Clay wrote about this, I think, really well. Same
- 33:52Speaker 2: LSU fans who are bitching about Charles Bediako playing at
- 33:55Speaker 2: Alabama are now okay with it when it's happening for
- 33:58Speaker 2: their school.
- 33:58Speaker 3: Right, right, right. Exactly.
- 34:00Speaker 2: I bet I can go back and find an article
- 34:02Speaker 2: from Glenn Gilbo that's bemoaning Alabama playing Charles Badiaco at
- 34:06Speaker 2: some point, and now it's like, oh, we're exposing the
- 34:09Speaker 2: ills of the SEC and the NCAA. Give me a break.
- 34:12Speaker 2: Come on.
- 34:12Speaker 1: Jet, I've got a side issue with the whole Bryce
- 34:18Speaker 1: Underwood presser. I want to let you set this up, though,
- 34:22Speaker 1: for your reaction because mine's going to be different, I think.
- 34:26Speaker 2: So Bryce Underwood, highly paid quarterback at Michigan. Yes. Not
- 34:31Speaker 2: a good first year. He's regressed, it looked like, before
- 34:34Speaker 2: game one. Kyle Whittingham was asked about it the day
- 34:37Speaker 2: before we're going to play this clip, and he was
- 34:40Speaker 2: asked about his quarterback situation. He said, look, it's not
- 34:41Speaker 2: an infinite thing. He's got to be better. He's our
- 34:45Speaker 2: quarterback right now, but that could change. The opposite of
- 34:48Speaker 2: what we would call a vote of confidence, a true
- 34:50Speaker 2: vote of confidence from the head coach, was the answer
- 34:53Speaker 2: that Kyle Whittingham gave. So now we're going to show
- 34:56Speaker 2: you Bryce Underwood when a reporter brought up what Kyle
- 34:58Speaker 2: Whittingham said. This is Bryce Underwood's response.
- 35:02Speaker 3: Your reaction to McCutcheon's comments about how your job isn't permanent?
- 35:08Speaker 2: It was comments about that?
- 35:10Speaker 3: Yeah, he said that your job isn't infinite. You know,
- 35:15Speaker 3: that's the starter. That's cool.
- 35:17Speaker 2: I see that.
- 35:19Speaker 3: What's your reaction? It's cool.
- 35:22Speaker 2: It's cool. Cool. That's cool. That's cool. That was the
- 35:30Speaker 2: response from Bison Underwood. Hutton, your response to that?
- 35:34Speaker 1: How does the media relations department not prep him for this?
- 35:38Speaker 1: How's that possible? You know you're going to be asked
- 35:41Speaker 1: about it. It happened yesterday. Good point.
- 35:44Speaker 2: 24 hours later.
- 35:47Speaker 1: He looks just nonchalant and carefree about this way too much.
- 35:54Speaker 1: But the response by Michigan's SIDs were even worse. They
- 35:59Speaker 1: didn't prep him for the question that would have you
- 36:03Speaker 1: banned if you were in Nashville.
- 36:06Speaker 2: That's a great angle I was not thinking about, but
- 36:08Speaker 2: you're right. That would have gotten that reporter banned in
- 36:11Speaker 2: Nashville and a terrible job by the Media Relations Department
- 36:15Speaker 2: of Michigan. Here's what I saw with Bryce Underwood. He
- 36:18Speaker 2: looks like a dude who got paid a ton of
- 36:19Speaker 2: money who doesn't really care. That's how he comes across
- 36:22Speaker 2: when he gives that response. He's got zero enthusiasm about him.
- 36:26Speaker 2: He's not going to follow up with any explanation as
- 36:28Speaker 2: to how he's the leader of the team. And he
- 36:30Speaker 2: wants to prove that. There seems to be very little motivation.
- 36:33Speaker 2: I'm just judging this based on his body language.
- 36:35Speaker 3: Right, I agree.
- 36:36Speaker 2: And now he answered with coo, coo. That's coo. He
- 36:39Speaker 2: sounds like a guy who's also like, you know what?
- 36:41Speaker 2: If they bench me, fine. I believe so much in
- 36:44Speaker 2: myself and my value, even though the value has diminished
- 36:48Speaker 2: since his time at Michigan, that I can just go
- 36:50Speaker 2: in the transfer portal and go somewhere else and get
- 36:52Speaker 2: paid a ton of money again to go somewhere else.
- 36:54Speaker 2: He would get paid to go somewhere else. I don't
- 36:56Speaker 2: think it's as much as he's getting paid right now.
- 36:58Speaker 2: If he ends up benched at Michigan, it's going to
- 37:01Speaker 2: be a lot less. It's going to be a bargain
- 37:03Speaker 2: basement discount deal. But you still could leave and go
- 37:06Speaker 2: get paid and go start somewhere if you're Bryce Underwood
- 37:10Speaker 2: because he's such a highly thought-of talent that will be
- 37:12Speaker 2: given another chance. But that, to me, it struck me
- 37:16Speaker 2: as a guy who is unmotivated, who got fat and
- 37:19Speaker 2: happy with his paychecks, who thinks that he is entitled–
- 37:25Speaker 2: to the starting job at Michigan, who probably isn't getting
- 37:27Speaker 2: along with his head coach, who's a bit more of
- 37:29Speaker 2: a hard-ass than what he's been accustomed to. I see
- 37:34Speaker 2: big problems at Michigan, and not just because of their
- 37:37Speaker 2: play in that first game. I see big problems with
- 37:40Speaker 2: Bryce Underwood and his head coach.
- 37:42Speaker 1: But Michigan has a skill, just briefly, they have a
- 37:46Speaker 1: skill of turning a problem into a solution somehow. because
- 37:53Speaker 1: they fall forward whenever they fall. They hire the coach
- 37:58Speaker 1: who is, at my perception of this, and again, we
- 38:01Speaker 1: don't know, maybe they did prep him for these questions
- 38:03Speaker 1: and that was his response. That's even worse.
- 38:05Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 38:06Speaker 1: But they fall forward when they need a coach who
- 38:08Speaker 1: came in late to the process because he was available.
- 38:11Speaker 1: with everything going down in Michigan, and he ends up
- 38:14Speaker 1: being the perfect coach, which we pointed out during the time,
- 38:18Speaker 1: he's the perfect guy to come in and recreate the
- 38:21Speaker 1: brand and the standard of what it means to play
- 38:24Speaker 1: for the Wolverines. And he's shooting people straight. You can
- 38:27Speaker 1: tell by his answer about the quarterback who's getting paid
- 38:30Speaker 1: a lot. He's not putting up with the same stuff
- 38:33Speaker 1: that was there, that brought Underwood there to begin with.
- 38:36Speaker 1: That's great for Michigan, even though right now things don't
- 38:38Speaker 1: look that great. They get an extra play, and somehow
- 38:41Speaker 1: they complete a Hail Mary. I mean, that's what the quarterback–
- 38:45Speaker 1: I'm just thinking, like, they fall, but they fall forward.
- 38:48Speaker 1: It works out generally in their– it normally goes in
- 38:51Speaker 1: their favor, despite the bad press that they have.
- 38:55Speaker 2: They didn't have– they won the championship. Yeah, all the
- 38:58Speaker 2: stuff with Jim Harbaugh, they still win the national title
- 39:00Speaker 2: that year. The Jawan Howard punching staff members eventually getting
- 39:04Speaker 2: fired and hitting rock bottom, and that leads them to
- 39:06Speaker 2: Dusty May, who quickly turns it around and wins the
- 39:08Speaker 2: national title. for Michigan. Sharone Moore, I do believe there's
- 39:13Speaker 2: some program rot from Sharone Moore with that team, and
- 39:17Speaker 2: I think we saw that in the first game. I
- 39:19Speaker 2: think Bryce Underwood is a symptom of that, honestly. That's
- 39:22Speaker 2: a guy who committed to play for Sharone Moore. He
- 39:25Speaker 2: got paid a ton of money to go do it,
- 39:26Speaker 2: and he ain't the guy. I think Michigan fans, if
- 39:29Speaker 2: they're being honest, with themselves right now, they know he
- 39:31Speaker 2: ain't the guy.
- 39:32Speaker 1: And he didn't have the spring portal. He didn't have
- 39:33Speaker 1: the spring portal. Nope. Chad, coming up, we've got some
- 39:41Speaker 1: lots to get to and much more here on Putney Withrow.

- 40:51Speaker 1: Chad, it is time for our Hard Rock Bet Lock
- 40:55Speaker 1: of the Week. And we'll see who's going to ride
- 41:00Speaker 1: with us and see who's going to follow and win
- 41:04Speaker 1: with us.
- 41:04Speaker 2: How about that? Who are you going with on your lock?
- 41:06Speaker 2: So Hutton, here's what I know about James Franklin. We
- 41:10Speaker 2: have a history with James Franklin. This is our parlay
- 41:14Speaker 2: from yesterday. So I'll go ahead and tell you the
- 41:16Speaker 2: one that we're going to get to. James Franklin of
- 41:19Speaker 2: Virginia Tech, I think this is a perfect marriage of
- 41:20Speaker 2: coach and job. James Franklin, he performs well in games
- 41:27Speaker 2: against inferior competition where you're going to get some excitement going.
- 41:32Speaker 2: Where James Franklin falters, we saw at Penn State, is
- 41:35Speaker 2: against teams that are as good as his team or better.
- 41:38Speaker 2: And most teams falter against better teams. Old Dominion is
- 41:42Speaker 2: not a better team than Virginia Tech. Virginia Tech and
- 41:45Speaker 2: James Franklin will continue to build the energy train moving
- 41:49Speaker 2: forward and get this team where they need to go
- 41:52Speaker 2: with their fan base. They are going to blow the
- 41:55Speaker 2: doors off of Old Dominion. Virginia Tech, 11 a.m. Central
- 42:00Speaker 2: kickoff at Lane Stadium. I think they're a 20.5-point favorite
- 42:04Speaker 2: in this game. Strike up the band. Virginia Tech's going
- 42:06Speaker 2: to win by way more than that.
- 42:09Speaker 3: You know what?
- 42:09Speaker 1: I know it was yesterday's parlay we saw. I think
- 42:13Speaker 1: you will combine with me. I'll take yours and I'll
- 42:17Speaker 1: raise you one. Give me Western Michigan minus 27.5. Strike
- 42:22Speaker 1: up the band at minus 105. 1-800-ASSWIP after what happened
- 42:28Speaker 1: last week, Chad. I'm with Coach Dooley. They've handled everything properly.
- 42:32Speaker 1: They've handled it the right way. They have leadership and
- 42:36Speaker 1: they have a standard that the players... I've responded with
- 42:40Speaker 1: as well. I think they're mature. I think they know
- 42:43Speaker 1: how to handle the week. And they'll let the business
- 42:46Speaker 1: be handled by the business leaders. I think they handle
- 42:49Speaker 1: business on Saturday. Give me Western Michigan to be 2-0
- 42:54Speaker 1: going into Sunday.
- 42:55Speaker 2: I love how we're not pussyfooting around here on this show.
- 42:59Speaker 2: We're going right in. We're going for big lines. We're
- 43:01Speaker 2: not taking the 1.5 points, bro. You're going 27.5. I'm
- 43:04Speaker 2: going 20.5. Let's take those big numbers. I'll also find,
- 43:09Speaker 2: and maybe this is just psychological with me, I have
- 43:12Speaker 2: way more success at 11 a.m. kickoffs and late, late
- 43:16Speaker 2: night games than I do throughout the day. When I'm
- 43:19Speaker 2: betting with Hard Rock Bet throughout a college football Saturday,
- 43:22Speaker 2: like this past weekend, my successful parlays, the morning parlay,
- 43:26Speaker 2: the 11 a.m. games, and the late games. So when
- 43:28Speaker 2: I started looking for the lock this week, I was
- 43:31Speaker 2: looking at 11 a.m. Central kickoff, 12 p.m. Eastern at
- 43:35Speaker 2: Virginia Tech. And that's why I'm taking James Franklin in
- 43:38Speaker 2: the Hokies. I also think that James Franklin will do
- 43:41Speaker 2: a good job this week, next week against East Carolina,
- 43:44Speaker 2: and then against James Madison. He's got an opportunity here
- 43:48Speaker 2: to really get something going for Virginia Tech, at least
- 43:51Speaker 2: early in their season. Sorry, it's at Maryland next week,
- 43:54Speaker 2: at Boston College, as they get into a Big Ten
- 43:57Speaker 2: game and then ACC play. I think he's going to
- 44:00Speaker 2: get off to a hot start at Virginia Tech and
- 44:02Speaker 2: get people talking about that program.
- 44:04Speaker 1: I'm logging right now with the Hard Rock Bet Sportsbook
- 44:07Speaker 1: app right now. I've got my authentication code going. I'm
- 44:11Speaker 1: going to talk a little bit about the game tonight
- 44:14Speaker 1: with the spread there. Well, there's plenty of rewards. I
- 44:16Speaker 1: love the rewards, by the way, how things are easy
- 44:18Speaker 1: to find on the app. And we've partnered with Hard
- 44:21Speaker 1: Rock Bet all season here at Sport and State. They're

- 44:32Speaker 1: because normally it's for new users. This is for all customers.

- 44:40Speaker 1: That's the way it should be. Reward the customers that
- 44:42Speaker 1: are there and the new customers.
- 44:44Speaker 2: I haven't even done this yet, but I need to.
- 44:46Speaker 2: As an existing customer of Hard Rock Bet, that's right.
- 44:49Speaker 2: Use that promo, Clay. HardRock.bet slash Clay. Also, Florida listeners,
- 44:54Speaker 2: get in on the NFL Survivor Contest. Pick one team

- 45:06Speaker 2: I have the three-leg parlay going for the bundle. I've
- 45:08Speaker 2: got Memphis, Tennessee, and Marshall. Memphis, I'm getting 10.5 on that.
- 45:14Speaker 2: I teased some of the lines out. I took Tennessee, Chad,
- 45:18Speaker 2: at minus 9.5. I love that.
- 45:20Speaker 1: I love that based on the 12.5. And Marshall against
- 45:23Speaker 1: my alma mater, MTSU. I teased that down by two points, but...
- 45:28Speaker 1: they'll probably double the spread in that. Tonight, I'm going
- 45:32Speaker 1: anytime touchdown. I mean, I would combine. It's like minus 125,
- 45:38Speaker 1: I think, for Christian McCaffrey. That means he's scoring.
- 45:42Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 45:43Speaker 1: Vegas always knows. The guy gets to the end zone.
- 45:46Speaker 1: And hopefully just for a good game. Right now, it's
- 45:48Speaker 1: the 49ers favored. Excuse me, getting four points. Rams on
- 45:53Speaker 1: a quick turn. Favored by four points in this one.
- 45:58Speaker 2: Even though I lost out picking the underdog to win
- 46:00Speaker 2: outright last night with the Patriots, should have been, would have,
- 46:03Speaker 2: could have, should have in that game for the Patriots
- 46:05Speaker 2: and for me with my bet. I think I'd probably
- 46:08Speaker 2: go back to the well, and I'm going with a
- 46:11Speaker 2: team that's embedded in the country for longer. I think
- 46:14Speaker 2: the 49ers win outright tonight on the money line against
- 46:17Speaker 2: the Rams. I think the Rams are going to be fine.
- 46:19Speaker 2: The Rams are still my Super Bowl pick from the NFC,
- 46:22Speaker 2: but I think the 49ers get it done tonight.
- 46:27Speaker 1: You've got a bonus bet as well available for odds
- 46:32Speaker 1: boost in the NFL. You do that on a four-leg
- 46:35Speaker 1: parlay tonight for Hard Rock.
- 46:38Speaker 2: You got Tennessee minus nine and a half. Is that right? Yes.
- 46:41Speaker 2: Very interested in what this last 10 days has been
- 46:45Speaker 2: like for Georgia Tech. Based on Brent Key telling everyone
- 46:48Speaker 2: in the media that his team is soft. They didn't
- 46:50Speaker 2: play physical. They got whipped. I'm thinking it has been
- 46:53Speaker 2: a physical rough night. Ten days getting ready for this
- 46:57Speaker 2: Tennessee game for Georgia Tech after the way they looked
- 46:59Speaker 2: against Colorado. I expect to see a different Georgia Tech team. Also,
- 47:04Speaker 2: based on what I saw, Tennessee's a more talented team.
- 47:07Speaker 2: I mean, and they play really well against an inferior opponent.
- 47:10Speaker 2: So I don't mind your bet, Hutton, is what I'm
- 47:12Speaker 2: saying for Tennessee and Georgia Tech. Tennessee should be able
- 47:15Speaker 2: to run the football, especially if Faison Brandon's legs are
- 47:19Speaker 2: involved in the run game. And Tennessee's got some really
- 47:22Speaker 2: good receivers, too, as Mike Matthews showed off in that
- 47:25Speaker 2: first week. So it feels like a good week for Tennessee.
- 47:29Speaker 1: I would say this about the matchup. Georgia Tech, very
- 47:32Speaker 1: well coached. Same as Michigan. But at Georgia Tech, those
- 47:35Speaker 1: are his dudes. They will listen to his message and
- 47:38Speaker 1: his coaching, right? Michigan's going to have to prove it
- 47:41Speaker 1: against Oklahoma. Looking forward to tomorrow. We'll get you into
- 47:45Speaker 1: the weekend, talking some ball. Enjoy the entire slate of
- 47:49Speaker 1: shows right here at Sporting State.
