- 0:34Speaker 2: And I just know that it's just the beginning of
- 0:36Speaker 2: so many things to come, and it just encourages me
- 0:38Speaker 2: to keep working hard, to keep going out of my

- 0:44Speaker 2: affects and has the chance to impact so many. So

- 0:51Speaker 2: for engaging, and for hanging out with me. This week

- 1:59Speaker 2: Autumn has been danced saying ever since she was a
- 2:01Speaker 2: really little girl. But when she was young, she had
- 2:05Speaker 2: a mysterious injury and pain in her hip that left
- 2:07Speaker 2: her unable to walk for almost a week. It was
- 2:10Speaker 2: that lingering pain that caused her to delay getting really
- 2:13Speaker 2: into dance until she was a teenager. And by that time,
- 2:16Speaker 2: a lot of the other dancers that she was up
- 2:18Speaker 2: against so that she.
- 2:19Speaker 1: Was interacting with they have a lot of years on her.
- 2:22Speaker 2: So she applied to all of her dream schools as
- 2:24Speaker 2: a dancer, and she ultimately got into a small performing
- 2:26Speaker 2: arts college. While she was there, a difficult ballet master,
- 2:30Speaker 2: which is like the funniest little title I've ever heard.
- 2:33Speaker 2: He made it even more difficult for her to pursue
- 2:35Speaker 2: her dancing dreams. He told her that he would never
- 2:38Speaker 2: place her in performance, that she didn't have what it
- 2:41Speaker 2: took to make it in the field, and that negative
- 2:43Speaker 2: feedback really weed on her. It really hurt her confidence.
- 2:47Speaker 2: So she decided to do the best she could with
- 2:50Speaker 2: what she had and pursue another dream, pursue something else.
- 2:54Speaker 1: That's when she went into personal training.
- 2:56Speaker 2: As a personal trainer, she was out in California, she
- 2:58Speaker 2: made her first home program called Home and Family, and
- 3:02Speaker 2: then she tells me in today's episode that through the
- 3:04Speaker 2: word of mouth from different clients, she finally got a
- 3:07Speaker 2: call from the people at Each Body and that is
- 3:10Speaker 2: when everything changed.
- 3:12Speaker 1: In today's episode, we talk.
- 3:14Speaker 2: All about creating her first program for the Fitness Mega brand,
- 3:18Speaker 2: and she'll talk about that in a little bit.
- 3:20Speaker 1: And the pressure is.
- 3:21Speaker 2: That she felt when she realized that she had the
- 3:24Speaker 2: opportunity to impact the lives of literally millions of people
- 3:29Speaker 2: all over the country and the world. This woman has
- 3:33Speaker 2: worked her butt off to get where she is today.
- 3:36Speaker 2: We talk about what some of the failures that she's
- 3:38Speaker 2: experienced have really taught her and the things that she's
- 3:41Speaker 2: excited for in the near future. Let me tell you
- 3:43Speaker 2: she's a pine sized powerhouse and there's no doubt in
- 3:46Speaker 2: my mind.
- 3:47Speaker 1: You guys are gonna love this episode.
- 3:48Speaker 2: As always, you know the drill at Emily Body at
- 3:51Speaker 2: Hurdle Podcast. If you have a hurdle moment of your
- 3:54Speaker 2: own to share, you just want to say, Hi, I
- 3:56Speaker 2: do the best I can to get back to you
- 3:58Speaker 2: guys in a timely manner and I so appreciate all
- 4:01Speaker 2: the comments, all the dms, all the emails. It's Emily
- 4:05Speaker 2: at Hurdle dot us. With that, let's get to hurdling.
- 4:17Speaker 1: Today.
- 4:18Speaker 2: I'm sitting down with Autumn Calabrese. She is well known
- 4:22Speaker 2: for her work with Beach Body in the twenty one
- 4:24Speaker 2: Day Fix. She's also a trainer on this season of
- 4:27Speaker 2: Revenge Body. You've worked with Kendall Jenner, You've worked with
- 4:29Speaker 2: Brooke Burke, You've worked with Rachel Zoe.
- 4:31Speaker 1: You've got a pretty impressive clientele roster. Thank you.
- 4:36Speaker 3: You know, I'd like to say this, I had a
- 4:37Speaker 3: pretty impressive clientele roster, and I actually consider my my
- 4:41Speaker 3: quote unquote clientele roster now more impressive. It's always fun
- 4:46Speaker 3: when you get to work with people in the public,
- 4:48Speaker 3: in the celebrity I but I get to train the
- 4:51Speaker 3: masses now. That's creating my at homework out programs that
- 4:54Speaker 3: lets me reach hundreds of thousands, if not millions, And
- 4:58Speaker 3: that clientele is where the honor is.
- 5:01Speaker 4: Really.
- 5:02Speaker 3: Not that there's anything wrong with training celebrities, but it's
- 5:04Speaker 3: just when you see those people's lives, those people that
- 5:06Speaker 3: are just so desperate for help, looking for an answer,
- 5:10Speaker 3: that are struggling, that don't have the ability to hire
- 5:13Speaker 3: a personal trainer to come to their house five days
- 5:15Speaker 3: a week and a shift come to their house and
- 5:16Speaker 3: all that stuff. When you get to step into their
- 5:18Speaker 3: world via the television and completely change their life like that,
- 5:23Speaker 3: to me is the impressive roster.
- 5:25Speaker 1: I can totally hear that.
- 5:26Speaker 2: So you don't just start training hundreds of thousands to
- 5:29Speaker 2: millions of people over night.
- 5:31Speaker 1: Talk to me a little bit about growing up. Where
- 5:33Speaker 1: are you from?
- 5:34Speaker 3: I was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, Okay, lived
- 5:37Speaker 3: there till I was fifteen, lived in Saint Louis after
- 5:41Speaker 3: that for about eight years, so did high school and
- 5:43Speaker 3: college in Saint Louis. Had a very short stint in
- 5:46Speaker 3: Jersey for six months second semester of my senior year.
- 5:49Speaker 4: Of high school. So I've lived a little bit everywhere.
- 5:53Speaker 2: Did you know growing up in Ohio that you had
- 5:56Speaker 2: an interest in fitness and wellness?
- 5:59Speaker 3: I want wanted to be a dancer, so I grew
- 6:02Speaker 3: up as a dancer. That's actually what I majored in
- 6:04Speaker 3: in college. I grew up wanting to entertain, I grew
- 6:07Speaker 3: up wanting to perform, and I grew up wanting to
- 6:10Speaker 3: move people in some way. I knew that since I
- 6:14Speaker 3: was a little little girl, Like it's a running joke
- 6:17Speaker 3: that I came out of the womb dancing. So I
- 6:19Speaker 3: guess somewhere in me was that passion to move my
- 6:23Speaker 3: body and somewhere in me was that passion to help people?
- 6:28Speaker 2: Okay, and when you say you grew up dancing, what
- 6:30Speaker 2: kind of dance are we talking about?
- 6:31Speaker 4: I did everything I did.
- 6:32Speaker 3: Jazz, ballet, tap, modern, lyrical jazz is my favorite, always
- 6:36Speaker 3: has been.
- 6:38Speaker 1: But yeah, I was a dance major in college. And
- 6:40Speaker 1: where was college?
- 6:41Speaker 4: You said what college.
- 6:42Speaker 3: Was in Saint Louis. I went to Webster University. Okay,
- 6:45Speaker 3: small performing arts college.
- 6:47Speaker 4: Did not graduate, but I did go for most of it.
- 6:50Speaker 2: So the question then comes up is that were you
- 6:53Speaker 2: always really good at it? Because God, I can tell
- 6:56Speaker 2: you that when I was dancing and I was younger,
- 6:58Speaker 2: there were plenty of people in that class that you know.
- 7:00Speaker 1: It took a little took a little bit of work.
- 7:03Speaker 3: No, I wasn't, and I wouldn't. I never considered myself
- 7:07Speaker 3: I was never the best in the class.
- 7:08Speaker 4: Ever.
- 7:08Speaker 3: I actually started behind the eight ball. I had an
- 7:12Speaker 3: issue with my hip when I was a little kid.
- 7:14Speaker 3: Woke up one day and couldn't walk, fell out of bed,
- 7:18Speaker 3: ended up in the hospital for like two weeks. Every
- 7:21Speaker 3: test known to man run on me. They never found
- 7:24Speaker 3: out what was wrong. I kind of got I just
- 7:25Speaker 3: got better. So for a long time, my parents were
- 7:28Speaker 3: very cautious of the activities that they would let me
- 7:30Speaker 3: do since they didn't know what was wrong, they didn't
- 7:33Speaker 3: know what could.
- 7:33Speaker 4: Cause it again.
- 7:34Speaker 3: So I didn't get to start dance until I was thirteen.
- 7:37Speaker 3: Most girls had already been dancing for five, six, seven years,
- 7:39Speaker 3: so I was always behind the eight ball. But I
- 7:41Speaker 3: might not have been the best technical dancer in the room,
- 7:44Speaker 3: but I promise you I was probably always the dancer with.
- 7:46Speaker 4: The most heart.
- 7:47Speaker 2: The most heart, I think that's what's important, right, Yes, Okay,
- 7:50Speaker 2: So you never found out what was up with your hip.
- 7:52Speaker 1: It just slowly got better.
- 7:54Speaker 4: Never found out.
- 7:55Speaker 3: I can make educated guesses as an adult because I
- 7:59Speaker 3: still have physical issues. So I have a bulging disc
- 8:01Speaker 3: in my lower spine in my L four L five.
- 8:04Speaker 3: So when that disc slips out, I am down and
- 8:08Speaker 3: out for a good ten days. The funny thing is
- 8:11Speaker 3: is it never slips out when I'm doing physical activity.
- 8:15Speaker 3: It slips out when I like bend over to put
- 8:17Speaker 3: on a pair of sox and move the wrong way,
- 8:19Speaker 3: and then I'm like and I'm down, or like bend over,
- 8:21Speaker 3: blow drying your hair and you move the wrong way,
- 8:24Speaker 3: like it's random things.
- 8:25Speaker 4: It's very rare, knock on wood, that.
- 8:27Speaker 3: It goes out on me anymore, because I've taken a
- 8:29Speaker 3: lot of caution in strengthening the areas that need to
- 8:32Speaker 3: be strengthened on my body, stretching when I need to,
- 8:36Speaker 3: and it's really The last time it went out on
- 8:38Speaker 3: me was just over two years ago, and in fact,
- 8:41Speaker 3: it went out and I sprained my entire hip complex
- 8:44Speaker 3: at one time. So that was one of the scariest
- 8:47Speaker 3: things I've ever experienced.
- 8:48Speaker 2: You mentioned something really interesting that you've taken the time
- 8:51Speaker 2: to strengthen the things that you need to strengthen to
- 8:54Speaker 2: accommodate for the fact that you have this pack issue.
- 8:56Speaker 2: I don't think a lot of the time when people
- 8:59Speaker 2: have an injury, they truly understand that everything is so interconnected.
- 9:04Speaker 2: Oh yeah, So when you say that you took that
- 9:05Speaker 2: time to strengthen, what are you focusing on when it
- 9:08Speaker 2: comes to lower back pain.
- 9:09Speaker 3: So a lot of lower back pain comes from either
- 9:12Speaker 3: week of dominos or too tight of hip flexers, not
- 9:16Speaker 3: strong glutes, so all of it. It's not just one thing.
- 9:19Speaker 3: So I'm always I warm up before my workouts I
- 9:22Speaker 3: foam roll before my workouts because a tight muscle is
- 9:24Speaker 3: not a strong muscle, so I make sure I don't
- 9:26Speaker 3: have knots in my muscles. One of the biggest reasons
- 9:30Speaker 3: I developed eighty day obsession was a My boss asked
- 9:33Speaker 3: me for an ABS and ASS program. That's what he said,
- 9:35Speaker 3: I want an ABS and ASS program. And I said, okay,
- 9:36Speaker 3: but I'm gonna give you a functional ABS and ASS program,
- 9:39Speaker 3: meaning like it's going to have a purpose, not just like,
- 9:41Speaker 3: look how good my abs and butt look. Because we
- 9:44Speaker 3: sit all day long, and we hunch over computers and
- 9:47Speaker 3: phones all day long. So I'm not the only person
- 9:49Speaker 3: with back issues. There's so many of us. So I
- 9:52Speaker 3: wanted to really develop something that taught people how to
- 9:55Speaker 3: strengthen those areas because that's what I had spent so
- 9:57Speaker 3: much of my time learning.
- 9:59Speaker 4: Okay, if I.
- 9:59Speaker 3: Strengthened this, this doesn't hurt anymore. If I stretch this,
- 10:02Speaker 3: this doesn't hurt anymore. If I build that, I can
- 10:06Speaker 3: move my legs properly if I'm moving from my glutes.
- 10:10Speaker 4: So yeah, it takes a little time and learning, but
- 10:13Speaker 4: that's what I did.
- 10:14Speaker 2: Okay, So you're in college, you're a dance major. What
- 10:17Speaker 2: do you think you're gonna do with your life?
- 10:20Speaker 4: I wanted to dance, and I wanted to act.
- 10:22Speaker 3: I wanted I knew, always knew I wanted to move
- 10:25Speaker 3: to California. That like, since I was itty bitty, I
- 10:28Speaker 3: would run around the house saying I'm gonna live in California,
- 10:30Speaker 3: and my dad would always tell me, like, no, you're
- 10:32Speaker 3: not watch me. So I thought I was gonna dance.
- 10:36Speaker 3: I really did, Like I wasn't exactly sure. I didn't
- 10:39Speaker 3: know if I would be dancing on a tour or
- 10:41Speaker 3: dancing in music videos. You know, I'm a child of
- 10:44Speaker 3: the eighties, which means I was in college in the nineties.
- 10:47Speaker 3: That's when music videos were hot, hot hot.
- 10:49Speaker 4: You know, you had Britney Spears and Christina Ana.
- 10:51Speaker 3: Guilera and then Sink and all these people that dance,
- 10:53Speaker 3: like really dance, and Janet Jackson and even Will Smith.
- 10:56Speaker 3: Like you had all these people that danced. So I
- 10:58Speaker 3: wanted to do that. My back was never.
- 11:01Speaker 4: Gonna let me do it, right.
- 11:03Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I would say or argue that the Will
- 11:07Speaker 2: Smith dance video is a little bit different than the
- 11:09Speaker 2: Britney Spears dance video.
- 11:11Speaker 1: They are, but I still loved that getting jiggy with it.
- 11:14Speaker 2: Come on, okay, So we thought we were gonna dance,
- 11:17Speaker 2: thought we were gonna dance, and that's not what happened.
- 11:18Speaker 3: That is not what happened. And that was that was
- 11:21Speaker 3: a tough pill to swallow. So I was my junior
- 11:23Speaker 3: year of college. I was battling a couple things. I
- 11:26Speaker 3: was battling my back, which was also causing k me issues.
- 11:30Speaker 3: And my ballet master, who was in charge of the
- 11:32Speaker 3: entire dance program at Webster. He was awful, like he
- 11:37Speaker 3: was the epitome of what dance instructors are and what
- 11:41Speaker 3: they shouldn't be. So this man tore me down on
- 11:43Speaker 3: a daily basis, like always told me I wasn't good enough.
- 11:46Speaker 3: I wasn't trying hard enough. It didn't matter how what
- 11:49Speaker 3: I brought to the class, it was never going to
- 11:50Speaker 3: be enough for him. He was a ballet dancer. He
- 11:53Speaker 3: wanted me to be a ballet dancer. And that is
- 11:55Speaker 3: not my strong suit. No matter how hard I tried,
- 11:58Speaker 3: and I would always try my best, it just wasn't
- 11:59Speaker 3: my thing. I was a chance dancer. And so junior year,
- 12:06Speaker 3: I sneezed at one point and it took me to
- 12:08Speaker 3: the ground like just a sneeze, literally dropped me to
- 12:10Speaker 3: the ground, couldn't get back up.
- 12:12Speaker 4: Went to the doctor.
- 12:14Speaker 3: The doctor, that's when I found out about the bulging disc,
- 12:17Speaker 3: the ball.
- 12:17Speaker 4: It's there's so many things.
- 12:18Speaker 3: It's quite interesting that I'm in the fitness world because
- 12:21Speaker 3: of it. Like my hips are off, my one leg
- 12:23Speaker 3: is longer than the other by like a half an.
- 12:25Speaker 1: Inch half an inch.
- 12:27Speaker 3: It's a big difference. Yeah, it's a big difference. And
- 12:29Speaker 3: so it all throws all my alignment off.
- 12:31Speaker 1: Immediately.
- 12:31Speaker 2: Just looked at your sneakers to look if you had
- 12:33Speaker 2: a lifter in one of that. I don't have a
- 12:35Speaker 2: list to see that. Okay, I probably should.
- 12:38Speaker 4: But I don't.
- 12:39Speaker 3: Uh. And so when I went to the doctor, he said,
- 12:41Speaker 3: he said to me, like, look, if you keep dancing
- 12:44Speaker 3: as much as you are, because I was dancing about
- 12:46Speaker 3: six or seven hours a day. You keep dancing the
- 12:48Speaker 3: way you are, you'll be in back surgery at twenty
- 12:50Speaker 3: And he said, Or you can stop dancing this much,
- 12:53Speaker 3: you can do it recreationally as fun, and you probably
- 12:56Speaker 3: will never have to have back surgery. So every thing
- 13:00Speaker 3: I spent my entire life working towards was like, great,
- 13:05Speaker 3: keep going, You're gonna end up in back surgery and
- 13:07Speaker 3: you probably won't be doing this anyways or find something
- 13:10Speaker 3: new to.
- 13:10Speaker 4: Do with your life.
- 13:12Speaker 3: So I actually left, and at the same time, my
- 13:15Speaker 3: ballet master basically sat me down and told me he
- 13:18Speaker 3: was never going.
- 13:19Speaker 4: To cast me in the final show.
- 13:21Speaker 3: He just didn't This man did not like me, and
- 13:23Speaker 3: he was like, I'm never gonna cast you in the
- 13:25Speaker 3: final show, and if you don't get cast in the
- 13:27Speaker 3: final show, you won't ever graduate with your degree.
- 13:30Speaker 4: So basically he was.
- 13:31Speaker 3: Telling me there's no point in you being here because
- 13:33Speaker 3: I'm never gonna let you graduate. So I was like,
- 13:38Speaker 3: all right, well then I guess I'm not graduating.
- 13:40Speaker 4: So I left.
- 13:41Speaker 3: I wasn't gonna stay in school not knowing what I
- 13:43Speaker 3: wanted to do, so I left.
- 13:44Speaker 4: I took some time.
- 13:46Speaker 3: For a minute, I thought I wanted to be a
- 13:48Speaker 3: physical therapist and work with injured dancers like that seemed
- 13:51Speaker 3: kind of maybe like a direction I wanted to go,
- 13:53Speaker 3: but then ended up not being And eventually I packed
- 13:57Speaker 3: my bags and had it to California.
- 13:59Speaker 1: Finally just gonna.
- 14:00Speaker 3: Go do it, like because I could still audition, I
- 14:02Speaker 3: could audition for commercials and movies, and I was taking
- 14:05Speaker 3: acting classes out here, and I was doing all that.
- 14:08Speaker 4: And it was going okay.
- 14:10Speaker 3: I got my sag card. I was doing little things
- 14:12Speaker 3: here and there, but it just wasn't enough. I was
- 14:16Speaker 3: still waiting tables to pay the bills. I had met
- 14:20Speaker 3: My then boyfriend became my fiance was you know, we
- 14:23Speaker 3: ended up getting married, but at the time he was
- 14:25Speaker 3: he's significantly older than me. He was not comfortable with
- 14:30Speaker 3: me pursuing acting and dancing. He's like, that's not very
- 14:34Speaker 3: financially stable for us to like get married and start
- 14:37Speaker 3: a family. And so that's when I started looking. I
- 14:41Speaker 3: was already looking for other career things to do, but
- 14:43Speaker 3: that's when I really started looking for something else to do.
- 14:46Speaker 2: And is that when you kind of started to lean
- 14:48Speaker 2: into personal training.
- 14:49Speaker 3: Yeah, So people kept saying, why don't you become a
- 14:51Speaker 3: dance teacher, Why don't you become a dance teacher?
- 14:53Speaker 4: And that was too hard for me. It was so
- 14:56Speaker 4: close to my heart.
- 14:57Speaker 3: It was so emotional for me that I couldn't do
- 15:00Speaker 3: it the way I wanted to do it anymore. That
- 15:02Speaker 3: I didn't want to teach it like I stepped away
- 15:04Speaker 3: from it for four years. I didn't step foot in
- 15:06Speaker 3: a dance class.
- 15:06Speaker 2: I can't even imagine what it's got to be like
- 15:08Speaker 2: to feel so passionate about something for so long in
- 15:11Speaker 2: your life and then literally having no other choice but
- 15:14Speaker 2: to step back from it.
- 15:16Speaker 3: Yeah, it was traumatizing. It was really emotional. Like I said,
- 15:21Speaker 3: it really messed with my confidence level. It messed with
- 15:24Speaker 3: what I felt I was capable of doing. But I
- 15:28Speaker 3: knew I loved being physically active, and I knew I
- 15:31Speaker 3: liked helping people, and so that's when I decided I
- 15:33Speaker 3: was going to become.
- 15:34Speaker 4: A personal trainer.
- 15:35Speaker 2: I think this is also something important to mention with
- 15:38Speaker 2: regard to becoming injured, because I think a lot of
- 15:42Speaker 2: individuals really struggle with this idea that, whether it's dance
- 15:46Speaker 2: or running or CrossFit or whatever your sport is, when
- 15:49Speaker 2: you get injured and you become down and out and
- 15:51Speaker 2: you realize that you really need to take a step back,
- 15:53Speaker 2: that really messes with your headspace. It messes with your
- 15:58Speaker 2: sense of self worth. It canfus you as to how
- 16:01Speaker 2: you're supposed to let go of a lot of the
- 16:02Speaker 2: aggression and the stress and the things that we deal
- 16:04Speaker 2: with every day, so I can definitely see some parallels drawn.
- 16:07Speaker 1: Oh yeah, in between the.
- 16:08Speaker 3: Two, when it's sort of your identity, it's when then
- 16:13Speaker 3: it's gone, You're you're left to figure out who you
- 16:16Speaker 3: are without that right, which in a way is a
- 16:21Speaker 3: great thing, right, Like it's a blessing in disguise. I
- 16:23Speaker 3: really believe that things are not failures, that they're redirects,
- 16:27Speaker 3: and I was definitely being redirected. It took a really
- 16:30Speaker 3: long time. It's actually funny because we were talking about this.
- 16:32Speaker 3: Before we started about I said, there's so many hurdles, like.
- 16:35Speaker 4: Let's pick one. How do we pick one?
- 16:38Speaker 3: And as we're talking about this, it's interesting because I
- 16:41Speaker 3: think my dance teacher, my college dance teacher, probably did
- 16:45Speaker 3: one of the biggest numbers on me possible, like, really
- 16:48Speaker 3: really messed me up emotionally in terms of self confidence
- 16:54Speaker 3: and what I felt I was capable of doing. And
- 16:59Speaker 3: I had to face it head on with Beach Body. Yeah,
- 17:03Speaker 3: and not with my first program, not with my second program,
- 17:06Speaker 3: not with my third program, all of which had done
- 17:08Speaker 3: very well. So at that point you would think, great,
- 17:12Speaker 3: your self confidence must be sky high, which it was
- 17:15Speaker 3: until my boss called me into his office and told
- 17:17Speaker 3: me what he wanted my fourth program to be. And
- 17:19Speaker 3: he said, I know you like country music, right and
- 17:21Speaker 3: I said yeah, And he's like, I want you to
- 17:22Speaker 3: do a dance program with country music, so based like
- 17:28Speaker 3: not country line dancing, but sort of around that theme,
- 17:31Speaker 3: creating moves to the music. That's very simple, beginner level.
- 17:36Speaker 3: And every fear I had came rushing back, and every insecurity,
- 17:43Speaker 3: every doubt that I had in my ability to create
- 17:47Speaker 3: that program came back and.
- 17:52Speaker 4: Working on it. Working on it was a blessing.
- 17:55Speaker 3: But like I said, it really made me face every
- 17:58Speaker 3: one of those insecurities work through them. It wasn't just
- 18:01Speaker 3: a like, it wasn't an I simple like, Okay, we're
- 18:05Speaker 3: going to do this. I mean there was emotional breakdowns
- 18:08Speaker 3: to myself more often than not, but there was a
- 18:11Speaker 3: lot because when we went into development on it, it
- 18:15Speaker 3: took seven versions before we got to the version that
- 18:18Speaker 3: my boss approved, and we were running out of time. Yeah,
- 18:21Speaker 3: like he was about to switch programs on me because
- 18:24Speaker 3: he was like, we're not getting it.
- 18:26Speaker 4: It's not what I want.
- 18:27Speaker 3: I don't and he didn't know how to explain to
- 18:28Speaker 3: me what he wanted so I was like trying to
- 18:30Speaker 3: read his mind, and I had one more shot at it,
- 18:33Speaker 3: and we sat down at a table and I was like, walk.
- 18:36Speaker 4: Me through again what you want, like, explain it to
- 18:38Speaker 4: me again. Let me just see.
- 18:39Speaker 3: And the way he explained it to me, it finally
- 18:41Speaker 3: clicked and I was like, Oh, you don't want to
- 18:43Speaker 3: dance routine, you want steps. And I was like, okay,
- 18:47Speaker 3: got it. But that was months months of trying and
- 18:49Speaker 3: then months of development and months of being nitpicked and
- 18:54Speaker 3: like I need more queueing and I need this and so,
- 18:56Speaker 3: like I said, it really it really was something that
- 19:01Speaker 3: brought up every insecurity I had.
- 19:03Speaker 2: Before we move on, tell me a little bit about
- 19:05Speaker 2: what beach Body is.
- 19:07Speaker 4: So, beach Body.
- 19:09Speaker 3: Is a company that creates at home fitness and nutrition programs.
- 19:13Speaker 3: Most people are most familiar with P ninety X from
- 19:16Speaker 3: Tony Horton. So Tony Horton was one of the first
- 19:19Speaker 3: trainers that beach Body ever had. So beach Body is
- 19:22Speaker 3: owned by Carl Deichler, and beach Body puts out the program,
- 19:26Speaker 3: so they find the trainer that you know, we develop
- 19:29Speaker 3: it together with the beach Body team, then we film it.
- 19:33Speaker 4: Then beach Body sells.
- 19:35Speaker 3: The program, and Beach Body actually kind of has two
- 19:38Speaker 3: different markets.
- 19:38Speaker 4: They have for years they had the infomercial market.
- 19:42Speaker 3: Where they would sell it on TV and you could
- 19:43Speaker 3: just buy it direct like that, and then they also
- 19:46Speaker 3: have the coaching market, so which is a multi level
- 19:48Speaker 3: marketing side of it, where people can be a Beach
- 19:50Speaker 3: Body coach and they are they put groups together where
- 19:54Speaker 3: but basically the coach is like your support system. You're
- 19:57Speaker 3: your cheerleader for you. They help you find the program
- 19:59Speaker 3: that's right for you. They're your accountability partner. They check
- 20:02Speaker 3: in on you to make sure you're having success. So
- 20:05Speaker 3: you can go either way with it. You know, you
- 20:06Speaker 3: can just go online and order things right just automatically
- 20:09Speaker 3: from Beach Body. You can get beach Body on demand
- 20:11Speaker 3: where all the workout programs are listed.
- 20:13Speaker 4: My cooking show is on.
- 20:14Speaker 3: There, or you can buy it through a coach, which
- 20:16Speaker 3: is all the same thing at all, and you all
- 20:18Speaker 3: end up in the same place. It's just whether or
- 20:20Speaker 3: not you want that extra accountability cheerleader, that cheerleader, that
- 20:23Speaker 3: person of like, Hey, I'm not doing this on my own,
- 20:25Speaker 3: so I need somebody to call me and be like,
- 20:27Speaker 3: did you press play today?
- 20:28Speaker 2: And sometimes we all need someone like yeah, totally, we
- 20:31Speaker 2: do uh to reflect on this idea of the dance
- 20:34Speaker 2: coach and then even your boss making you feel at
- 20:36Speaker 2: times like you were less or a little inferior. I
- 20:40Speaker 2: mean we all have people like that in our lives.
- 20:42Speaker 2: I think that what is so important in a constant
- 20:46Speaker 2: battle for me, and I'm sure you experience it as
- 20:48Speaker 2: well as is coming to terms with this idea that
- 20:51Speaker 2: like you are good as you are, and because someone
- 20:54Speaker 2: thinks something about you, that doesn't mean that that's how
- 20:58Speaker 2: you are. That doesn't mean that's who you are are.
- 21:00Speaker 2: What it means is that, all right, this is this
- 21:02Speaker 2: person's opinion. But it's so important to get to a
- 21:05Speaker 2: place where you feel confident in what you have to
- 21:08Speaker 2: bring to the table, knowing that that criticism doesn't define you.
- 21:12Speaker 3: Right well, I love the saying that other people's opinions
- 21:15Speaker 3: are running your business, for sure. I love that because
- 21:18Speaker 3: you know, everybody's got an opinion about everybody, and that person,
- 21:23Speaker 3: like you said, that person's opinion really isn't It's not
- 21:26Speaker 3: a reflection of you. The only thing that matters is
- 21:28Speaker 3: your opinion. And I don't think my boss ever made
- 21:30Speaker 3: me feel inferior. In fact, if anything, he was the
- 21:33Speaker 3: one building me up always. But that doesn't mean, you know,
- 21:36Speaker 3: he didn't have a company you run in a vision
- 21:38Speaker 3: that he had. But it's interesting how you can take
- 21:43Speaker 3: what somebody is asking of you and turn it into
- 21:47Speaker 3: I'm not doing it good enough. I'm not giving them
- 21:50Speaker 3: what they need, I'm not bringing my best self to
- 21:53Speaker 3: the table, which is never what was actually being said
- 21:56Speaker 3: or even remotely implied. But when you've got that deep
- 22:00Speaker 3: seated history of me, for me, the dance teacher telling
- 22:04Speaker 3: me straight out I wasn't good enough, straight out I
- 22:06Speaker 3: didn't try hard enough. I was never gonna make it.
- 22:10Speaker 3: That can't help but play in the background so that
- 22:13Speaker 3: when somebody corrected, gives you corrective criticism or you know,
- 22:17Speaker 3: constructive criticism.
- 22:21Speaker 1: You flip it totally.
- 22:22Speaker 4: You flip it.
- 22:23Speaker 3: And that's something that we have to learn for ourselves
- 22:26Speaker 3: to silence that yeah and to not let that past
- 22:30Speaker 3: define us.
- 22:31Speaker 2: Talk to me about what it was like when the first,
- 22:34Speaker 2: the second, and the third programs really caught on like wildfire,
- 22:38Speaker 2: because I think we skipped over becoming a personal trainer
- 22:42Speaker 2: and throwing into this beach body thing. So how did
- 22:44Speaker 2: you even transition into a place where you went from
- 22:48Speaker 2: personal trainer working out of god knows what Jim in
- 22:51Speaker 2: California to finding Beach Body and creating these programs.
- 22:55Speaker 3: Yeah, it's a super long story, but it basically I
- 22:59Speaker 3: was a trained at Equinox. I also had a lot
- 23:01Speaker 3: of private clients at the time. And yes, I had
- 23:06Speaker 3: private clients that were in front of the camera, but
- 23:07Speaker 3: I had a lot of private clients that were sort
- 23:09Speaker 3: of in the entertainment industry but on the back end
- 23:11Speaker 3: side of it, and I was working on creating a
- 23:14Speaker 3: product that helped people with portion control. That was something
- 23:18Speaker 3: that I was seeing that was a big problem for
- 23:20Speaker 3: so many clients was that I would be kicking their
- 23:22Speaker 3: butt in the gym five days a week and they
- 23:25Speaker 3: would be going up and down five pounds. And I
- 23:27Speaker 3: had one client in particular, who I had become very
- 23:29Speaker 3: good friends with at the same time. We went out
- 23:31Speaker 3: to lunch one day after her workout and we had
- 23:35Speaker 3: ordered salads, and these salads were enormous, and she basically
- 23:38Speaker 3: ate the entire salad. I had a portion of it,
- 23:41Speaker 3: and looking across the table, it was sort of like
- 23:44Speaker 3: that aha moment of like that's our problem.
- 23:46Speaker 4: And that's why I said to her.
- 23:48Speaker 3: I was like, that's your problem, and she's like, what,
- 23:50Speaker 3: I had a salad and I was like, yeah, it's
- 23:52Speaker 3: not just a salad in California, We've got all the
- 23:56Speaker 3: nutritional information on the menus. So we pulled up the
- 23:58Speaker 3: menu and sure enough, the salad was like fifteen hundred calories.
- 24:01Speaker 3: It was really like six servings of vegetables for four
- 24:05Speaker 3: or five servings of carbohydrates. It was lettuce and pasta
- 24:08Speaker 3: and croutons and broccoli and feta, cheese and chicken and
- 24:11Speaker 3: salad dressing to cover a salad that big. So she
- 24:14Speaker 3: had eaten almost all of her calories for the day
- 24:16Speaker 3: in that one meal. She had stretched out her stomach,
- 24:19Speaker 3: which means she was going to go really long time
- 24:22Speaker 3: without eating again because she was probably going to be
- 24:24Speaker 3: a little overly full. Her digestion was going to be
- 24:27Speaker 3: a little bit harder because how much she had just
- 24:28Speaker 3: put in there. So all of it just started rushing
- 24:30Speaker 3: through my mind. So that's when I started to work
- 24:33Speaker 3: on my portion control product. I launched it on the
- 24:37Speaker 3: Hallmark channel on a show called Home and Family. From there,
- 24:42Speaker 3: I had given it also to one of my private
- 24:44Speaker 3: clients who was in the entertainment industry and the sound
- 24:47Speaker 3: editing side of it.
- 24:48Speaker 4: They were having a friend over for lunch one day.
- 24:51Speaker 3: He was a slightly bigger gentleman and they were trying
- 24:54Speaker 3: to nudge him to lose weight, and so they said,
- 24:56Speaker 3: look what our trainer created. And he wasn't at all
- 24:59Speaker 3: interested in it for himself, but he said, I think
- 25:01Speaker 3: I know somebody who might be interested in that.
- 25:03Speaker 4: Can I pass it on?
- 25:04Speaker 3: So they called me. They asked me if he could
- 25:05Speaker 3: pass it on. I said, who's you passing on to?
- 25:07Speaker 3: They said, beach body.
- 25:08Speaker 4: I was like, oh my gosh.
- 25:09Speaker 1: Yes.
- 25:11Speaker 3: Eventually, like a week or so later, I got called
- 25:14Speaker 3: in for I got the phone call that they wanted
- 25:16Speaker 3: to have a meeting with me.
- 25:18Speaker 4: We didn't have the meeting for six.
- 25:19Speaker 3: More weeks because it was right before Christmas, so the
- 25:22Speaker 3: CEO was going out of town, he wasn't gonna be around.
- 25:27Speaker 3: Went in, had the meeting. The meeting went well. Wasn't
- 25:31Speaker 3: sure how it went.
- 25:32Speaker 4: You never know.
- 25:32Speaker 3: When you're sitting in those situations, You're like, did I
- 25:35Speaker 3: say the right thing?
- 25:36Speaker 4: Should I have said more?
- 25:37Speaker 3: Should I have said less? And it was about two
- 25:40Speaker 3: months until I got the phone call and the email
- 25:44Speaker 3: that had the contract in it.
- 25:45Speaker 1: Longest two months ever.
- 25:47Speaker 4: Longest two months of my life. I've never checked my
- 25:48Speaker 4: email so many times.
- 25:50Speaker 1: I can totally relate to that.
- 25:51Speaker 2: Especially it's like when I have a new article coming
- 25:53Speaker 2: out in a magazine and I'm really excited about it. Yeah,
- 25:55Speaker 2: feature spread or something, and I'm going into Barnes and
- 25:58Speaker 2: Noble like every day for the two weeks leading up
- 26:00Speaker 2: to news stand date, even though that I know that
- 26:03Speaker 2: news stand date isn't for two weeks.
- 26:04Speaker 1: Just think he's think of it early, right, You just
- 26:06Speaker 1: never know.
- 26:13Speaker 2: A quick break from this week's episode to give my sponsor,
- 26:17Speaker 2: Athletic Greens a little bit of love.
- 26:19Speaker 1: Guys, listen again.

- 26:36Speaker 2: sort of supplement, I really feel like it's doing my
- 26:39Speaker 2: body good. On the days that I'm not taking Athletic Greens.
- 26:43Speaker 2: I feel more sluggish. I just don't feel like myself.
- 26:45Speaker 2: But when I mix it up first thing in the morning,

- 27:24Speaker 2: So they get excited and there they're all in, you
- 27:27Speaker 2: have a contract.
- 27:27Speaker 3: I have a contract, And I just went into development
- 27:30Speaker 3: on my first program, which ended up being twenty one
- 27:32Speaker 3: Day Fixed. That honestly was the monster. Like that was
- 27:37Speaker 3: my first program ever with them. It was a hell
- 27:41Speaker 3: of a ride just in the creation process. It was
- 27:44Speaker 3: supposed to be nine weeks of a test group. It
- 27:47Speaker 3: turned into nine months of a test group. So it
- 27:49Speaker 3: was a really interesting time juggling so many things in
- 27:53Speaker 3: my life. I was still a personal trainer. I didn't
- 27:55Speaker 3: want to give up my private clients because I didn't
- 27:56Speaker 3: know how this was going to go. I had just
- 28:00Speaker 3: gotten divorced the year before. I was taking care of
- 28:05Speaker 3: my son, he was two two and a half. In
- 28:08Speaker 3: the process of all of everything that was going on,
- 28:11Speaker 3: my ex husband lost his job, was moving to San Diego.
- 28:15Speaker 4: I was a fitness competitor.
- 28:17Speaker 3: I had a competition literally three days before we started
- 28:20Speaker 3: filming the workouts.
- 28:22Speaker 4: I like a lot on my plate.
- 28:23Speaker 2: I was going to say, you're not doing anything here, no,
- 28:26Speaker 2: very there's nothing going on, nothing geez.
- 28:29Speaker 4: I like a lot on my plate.
- 28:31Speaker 3: And it was funny because when we filmed, even then,
- 28:35Speaker 3: I was dealing with something the director at the time
- 28:38Speaker 3: I had been I had worked for the director at
- 28:40Speaker 3: the time many years ago as background talent for her,
- 28:44Speaker 3: and she is amazing and her and I are wonderful
- 28:47Speaker 3: friends now, but at the time she was still looking
- 28:50Speaker 3: at me as background talent, and so all through rehearsals
- 28:54Speaker 3: she was very much treating me like I didn't know
- 28:57Speaker 3: what I was doing, like I was background talent, Like
- 28:59Speaker 3: you going to need to do this, and you're gonna
- 29:01Speaker 3: need to do that, and I was like, I know,
- 29:02Speaker 3: I know, I got it. I promise I got it.
- 29:05Speaker 3: And in the meantime, I'm rehearsal week is also peak
- 29:09Speaker 3: week for competition, so I'm carb depleted, I'm dehydrated.
- 29:12Speaker 4: I'm still trying to get my workouts in.
- 29:14Speaker 3: I'm trying to go to my weigh ins and all
- 29:15Speaker 3: these things, and I'm in rehearsals with once again somebody
- 29:18Speaker 3: telling me I don't know what I'm doing. So it's
- 29:21Speaker 3: it's an emotional drain that week, but it's also so
- 29:24Speaker 3: exciting because I can't wait to get in there and
- 29:26Speaker 3: film the workouts, right, so we did. We went in,
- 29:28Speaker 3: we filmed the first workout on the first day. They're like,
- 29:31Speaker 3: don't worry about it. Let's just give it a shot.
- 29:33Speaker 4: See how it goes. They yelled action.
- 29:35Speaker 3: We filmed the whole workout, which was thirty minutes. They
- 29:38Speaker 3: yelled cut and everybody was standing there with like a
- 29:40Speaker 3: blank look on their face.
- 29:42Speaker 4: And I was like, oh my god, I sucked.
- 29:43Speaker 3: In my mind, that's what I'm thinking, like, oh God,
- 29:45Speaker 3: all right, Like they're gonna come talk to me.
- 29:47Speaker 1: Dance teacher two point oh, yeah.
- 29:49Speaker 3: Dance teacher two point oh. I thought for sure, and
- 29:50Speaker 3: I knew my CEO was there. He was in the
- 29:52Speaker 3: back room, and I was just like, oh my gosh, okay.
- 29:54Speaker 3: And the director she came out and she kind of
- 29:58Speaker 3: came walking up to me very slow, and she would
- 30:01Speaker 3: call me Boo, and she said she put her hand
- 30:03Speaker 3: on my shoulder and she said, Boo. In all of
- 30:06Speaker 3: my career, I've never seen anybody get it in one take.
- 30:10Speaker 3: And so it was like that moment of relief, of
- 30:13Speaker 3: like vindication of like I know, I knew what I
- 30:15Speaker 3: was doing, and she was like, that was amazing. Let's
- 30:17Speaker 3: do one for safety. And I was like, okay, great,
- 30:20Speaker 3: and she's like, you know, take five, get water and
- 30:22Speaker 3: we'll do it again. And normally the CEO at least
- 30:26Speaker 3: I was told, would stay for the whole first day.
- 30:28Speaker 3: And he came walking out and he's like, she's got it,
- 30:30Speaker 3: and he left and so he's out of there. He's
- 30:33Speaker 3: like I was like, all right, that's fantastic. And we
- 30:35Speaker 3: filmed for that week and I went through a six
- 30:38Speaker 3: months waiting period. Nobody knew who I was. They weren't
- 30:41Speaker 3: announcing me yet, so I had to still go in
- 30:43Speaker 3: this like limbo time period of sort of who am
- 30:47Speaker 3: I and what am I doing now? Because the product
- 30:50Speaker 3: wasn't launching yet they hadn't announced me.
- 30:53Speaker 1: I was still training. I didn't know how much longer
- 30:55Speaker 1: I should.
- 30:55Speaker 3: Keep my clients because I felt bad knowing that I
- 30:58Speaker 3: was going to be leaving them.
- 31:01Speaker 4: And then finally we launched.
- 31:02Speaker 3: We launched February eleventh of twenty fourteen.
- 31:05Speaker 2: And not to mention, like, you were also going through
- 31:06Speaker 2: such a crazy emotional transition. Yes, so you're dealing with
- 31:11Speaker 2: this huge shift in your personal life. You're being a
- 31:13Speaker 2: mom to this two and a half year old that's
- 31:15Speaker 2: running around, You're trying to balance your clients and this
- 31:18Speaker 2: new career and so worried about what's going to happen next,
- 31:21Speaker 2: and it's just, yeah.
- 31:24Speaker 4: It was a lot. It was a lot looking back
- 31:27Speaker 4: on it, but.
- 31:27Speaker 3: It was all so good that it was, you know,
- 31:29Speaker 3: especially when you're like on that climb up, but you
- 31:33Speaker 3: know that the climb is good. I don't I don't
- 31:38Speaker 3: remember ever being tired.
- 31:40Speaker 4: I'm sure I was exhausted.
- 31:41Speaker 3: I feel like I'm more tired now, but it was,
- 31:43Speaker 3: you know, there's so there's so much excitement around it,
- 31:45Speaker 3: there's so much energy around it.
- 31:48Speaker 4: There's so much unknown.
- 31:49Speaker 3: In what's to be discovered that if you lean into that,
- 31:54Speaker 3: which is what I was doing. I was leaning into
- 31:56Speaker 3: like all the fun I was having with it and
- 31:58Speaker 3: the fact that it was everything I had been working
- 32:00Speaker 3: looking for.
- 32:01Speaker 2: So it might not have felt tired, but I bet
- 32:04Speaker 2: that you did feel alone.
- 32:07Speaker 3: No, here's the thing that those were not the moments
- 32:10Speaker 3: of feeling alone.
- 32:11Speaker 1: Interesting, It's not.
- 32:13Speaker 3: Those were the moments where, no, I've never felt so
- 32:16Speaker 3: lifted up. It was like, I have this Beach Bodies,
- 32:19Speaker 3: this amazing company. I had all these people around me.
- 32:22Speaker 3: I had all my friends that were still trainers at
- 32:24Speaker 3: Equinox that were like cheering me on. That is not
- 32:28Speaker 3: when I felt alone. We launched the program, and the
- 32:31Speaker 3: program blew it out.
- 32:32Speaker 4: Of the water.
- 32:34Speaker 3: We sold in the first day what they predicted to
- 32:36Speaker 3: sell in the first week. We sold in the first
- 32:39Speaker 3: week what they predicted to sell in the first three months,
- 32:41Speaker 3: and we went on back order for two months with
- 32:44Speaker 3: that launch. It was one of the biggest launches in
- 32:47Speaker 3: the Beach Body history. That infomercial stayed at number one
- 32:50Speaker 3: for fourteen weeks straight. It stayed in the top ten
- 32:52Speaker 3: infomercials for over a year. It was I would say
- 32:59Speaker 3: five six months in. It's not when it's not when
- 33:03Speaker 3: you're making the climb that you're alone.
- 33:05Speaker 4: It's when you hit the success.
- 33:07Speaker 3: And it's funny because when I signed on to Beach
- 33:10Speaker 3: Body and when I was in the development process, I
- 33:13Speaker 3: had a meeting with my CEO and at the end
- 33:15Speaker 3: of my meeting, he said to me, do you have
- 33:18Speaker 3: some good friends? And I thought it was such a
- 33:21Speaker 3: weird question, and I was like yeah, And he's like,
- 33:23Speaker 3: do you have you close with your family? And I
- 33:25Speaker 3: was like yeah, and he's like, keep them around. It's
- 33:29Speaker 3: lonely at the top. That's all I said, keep them around.
- 33:32Speaker 3: It's lonely at the top. And I really didn't think
- 33:34Speaker 3: anything of it.
- 33:35Speaker 4: When he said it.
- 33:37Speaker 3: He could not have been more right in terms of
- 33:40Speaker 3: when you find your success, you also find you see
- 33:48Speaker 3: a really unattractive side of people that maybe never saw before.
- 33:52Speaker 3: That's when jealousy starts to come out. That's when talking
- 33:56Speaker 3: behind your back starts to come out. That's when people
- 34:01Speaker 3: that are even the closest of people in your life
- 34:04Speaker 3: start to make you feel like you're the bank and
- 34:08Speaker 3: not the friend or the relative, right like, what can
- 34:11Speaker 3: I have from you? Without thinking twice?
- 34:16Speaker 4: You know? So that's it's not the climb where it
- 34:19Speaker 4: feels lonely.
- 34:20Speaker 2: It's the top and it's like when they come to you,
- 34:22Speaker 2: it's as though they always need something. It's never to
- 34:25Speaker 2: check on you. It's that quote that people always say.
- 34:28Speaker 2: It's like, don't forget to check on your strong friend.
- 34:30Speaker 2: It's like they see you doing well and they think, Okay,
- 34:33Speaker 2: she's all set.
- 34:34Speaker 1: Yes, but that's not really how it works.
- 34:37Speaker 3: No, it's really not. And that's the really interesting thing
- 34:40Speaker 3: that I think so many people have a hard time with.
- 34:42Speaker 3: They see people that have had success, and they forget
- 34:45Speaker 3: that there were these hurdles that they had to overcome.
- 34:47Speaker 3: They forget that there's a whole story that happened before
- 34:53Speaker 3: that success story happened. That for most of us, we
- 34:57Speaker 3: weren't born with you know, like, sure, you can have
- 35:02Speaker 3: anything you want, and your parents happen to be in
- 35:04Speaker 3: the field you want, you know, like most people aren't
- 35:07Speaker 3: the children of.
- 35:07Speaker 4: Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie.
- 35:09Speaker 3: Like, so if they want to be an actor, they've
- 35:10Speaker 3: got parents who are who can direct put them right
- 35:12Speaker 3: where they need to be. You know what, most of
- 35:14Speaker 3: us don't have that. I'm a Midwest girl from Ohio.
- 35:17Speaker 3: My dad owned pizza places like that that, you know,
- 35:21Speaker 3: and I had a strong family, and I had family
- 35:23Speaker 3: that told me, like my dad always told me you
- 35:25Speaker 3: could be anything you want to be. My mom questioned
- 35:27Speaker 3: me when I moved to California and said, what makes
- 35:28Speaker 3: you think you're any better than anybody else that has
- 35:30Speaker 3: moved there.
- 35:31Speaker 4: So there was.
- 35:32Speaker 3: There's always that side, there's always that story that happened before.
- 35:36Speaker 3: And I think that's really important for people to remember
- 35:38Speaker 3: on both ends of it. The people that are going
- 35:40Speaker 3: through it, like, just because you're going through it, doesn't
- 35:43Speaker 3: mean you're not going to get through it doesn't mean
- 35:44Speaker 3: you're not going to end up on the other side
- 35:47Speaker 3: with a huge success story. And for the people looking
- 35:50Speaker 3: at those people with this success story, like you said, yeah,
- 35:54Speaker 3: don't assume that because they're successful in their career that
- 36:00Speaker 3: that doesn't mean that they don't still have hurdles that
- 36:02Speaker 3: they have to overcome, or that they don't still need
- 36:04Speaker 3: to be checked on or asked, you know, like what's going.
- 36:06Speaker 4: On with you?
- 36:06Speaker 3: Hey, Like how is everything? Because I think that's really important.
- 36:09Speaker 1: It's super important.
- 36:10Speaker 2: Okay, So while you are at the top, so to speak,
- 36:14Speaker 2: after this first launch and it goes so crazy successful,
- 36:17Speaker 2: how are you handling some of these what can be
- 36:21Speaker 2: described as overwhelming feelings.
- 36:24Speaker 3: You know, I think for the first year, you're on
- 36:27Speaker 3: such a high of like, oh my gosh, like this
- 36:30Speaker 3: is everything I've wanted.
- 36:31Speaker 4: That it's it takes a minute. It really takes a
- 36:36Speaker 4: minute to process it all.
- 36:38Speaker 3: And I don't think I processed or even started a
- 36:41Speaker 3: process what was happening until maybe after the first year
- 36:46Speaker 3: or even two years, maybe even after Fixed Extreme launched,
- 36:49Speaker 3: where then you start to go, okay, like this is
- 36:52Speaker 3: really happening, like it wasn't just one program, this is
- 36:55Speaker 3: my second program. And you know, after Fixed Extreme came
- 36:59Speaker 3: the Master's Hammer and Chisel, and then that's where your
- 37:03Speaker 3: mind starts to shift a little bit of going like
- 37:07Speaker 3: you know, when you're making that climb and you have
- 37:09Speaker 3: that first big one that's like the big hurrah, oh
- 37:11Speaker 3: my gosh. But there does there is this transitional period
- 37:15Speaker 3: that happens where you go from being the one who's like,
- 37:19Speaker 3: oh my gosh, I'm up and coming and I'm new
- 37:21Speaker 3: to the one who's like, oh my gosh, I've got
- 37:24Speaker 3: a target on my back because I'm I'm the quote
- 37:27Speaker 3: unquote want to be I'm the quote unquote want to
- 37:31Speaker 3: break my break that record, do better than she did,
- 37:35Speaker 3: and all of it all you really have to, like
- 37:38Speaker 3: I have to check in on the regular with myself.
- 37:41Speaker 3: You have to keep a level head. You have to
- 37:43Speaker 3: keep your head down and stay focused. You have to
- 37:45Speaker 3: not worry about the stats like that.
- 37:46Speaker 4: Like I always have to.
- 37:49Speaker 3: Stop and say to myself, what's the goal. The goal
- 37:52Speaker 3: is to help people. That's all that matters. Like, it's
- 37:55Speaker 3: not about you know, how many followers you have on Instagram,
- 37:58Speaker 3: how many likes you get. It's not about like, you know,
- 38:01Speaker 3: did this product outsell that product? Did this product help somebody?
- 38:04Speaker 3: That's what has to be priority number one.
- 38:07Speaker 2: You mentioned social media. How was getting familiar with that
- 38:12Speaker 2: for you.
- 38:14Speaker 3: I had been on social media, you know, I had Facebook.
- 38:16Speaker 3: We all had Facebook. I had just barely started. Everybody
- 38:21Speaker 3: had barely started using Instagram about seven years ago when
- 38:26Speaker 3: when I was sort of in development or for twenty
- 38:29Speaker 3: one day fixed. So I feel like that has been
- 38:33Speaker 3: an ever changing thing for all of us. Anybody that's
- 38:37Speaker 3: kind of been in business for the last eight to
- 38:40Speaker 3: ten years. I think we're all learning it as we go,
- 38:42Speaker 3: and it changes every single day.
- 38:44Speaker 1: What about the feedback loop.
- 38:47Speaker 3: Uh, I learned very quickly to I learned very quickly the.
- 38:53Speaker 4: Skill of swipe, delete and block when needed.
- 38:58Speaker 3: So I do not do negativity on my feed, and
- 39:03Speaker 3: I'm it's one of those moments like I've tried to
- 39:06Speaker 3: keep my feed pretty positive, but I have no problem
- 39:08Speaker 3: coming on and given like tough love, mama, bear love,
- 39:11Speaker 3: Like keep your negative crap off my site.
- 39:13Speaker 4: Like if you don't like what I'm posting.
- 39:14Speaker 3: That's cool, you don't have to follow me, but you
- 39:18Speaker 3: are not allowed to come on here and have negativity
- 39:23Speaker 3: towards somebody else or towards me. So like if I
- 39:26Speaker 3: post somebodies before and after, you're not allowed to come
- 39:28Speaker 3: on and question their hard work. No way, that person
- 39:31Speaker 3: worked their butt off literally, So you don't get to
- 39:33Speaker 3: tell them that they didn't. You don't get to say
- 39:36Speaker 3: that they still don't look good. You don't get to
- 39:38Speaker 3: skinny shame somebody and say like, you looked better before.
- 39:42Speaker 4: You don't get to fat shame.
- 39:43Speaker 3: Somebody and say like, oh my gosh, why would you
- 39:46Speaker 3: post like cause there's been all of that on it.
- 39:49Speaker 3: So I have my fice, the Italian side to me,
- 39:52Speaker 3: and I just don't tolerate that on my stuff. I'm like,
- 39:54Speaker 3: I want I want when people to come over to
- 39:57Speaker 3: my feed wherever it is, to want it to be
- 40:00Speaker 3: a positive experience and for me too, and a lot
- 40:02Speaker 3: of times it's not. You know, I get I get treaded,
- 40:05Speaker 3: but I usually know what I'm gonna get treaded for.
- 40:07Speaker 4: Before I ever post it.
- 40:09Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't care, and I've I've made that very
- 40:11Speaker 3: clear to people too. I'm like, you, guys, I know
- 40:14Speaker 3: what you're gonna say before I ever post the picture.
- 40:16Speaker 4: If I cared, I.
- 40:18Speaker 3: Wouldn't post it.
- 40:19Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 40:20Speaker 2: Well that goes back to again, this self dialogue, right,
- 40:22Speaker 2: this creating this place where you feel confident in what
- 40:25Speaker 2: you have to offer, so it doesn't matter what anybody
- 40:27Speaker 2: has to say about what you are doing.
- 40:29Speaker 1: You're just fine.
- 40:30Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 40:30Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm not posting anything obscene or trashy or anything
- 40:33Speaker 3: like that. So I'm like, if you don't like my
- 40:35Speaker 3: bathing suit shot, well sorry, that's I don't know what
- 40:37Speaker 3: you want to tell you.
- 40:38Speaker 4: This is what we're doing, is that's that's that's what
- 40:40Speaker 4: I have.
- 40:40Speaker 1: On today, or like, you know, I love it.
- 40:43Speaker 2: Okay, So now, so much success with beach body talk
- 40:46Speaker 2: to me about what has then become the next chapter
- 40:50Speaker 2: for you. So where are you at with now what's
- 40:52Speaker 2: going on? Talk to me about maybe talk to me
- 40:54Speaker 2: about Revenge body and the whole shebang.
- 40:57Speaker 3: So we I am in this new chapter, which is
- 41:00Speaker 3: it's such a fun chapter of really like this is
- 41:02Speaker 3: the established chapter. This is the no longer like I
- 41:06Speaker 3: don't I'm not proving I don't have to prove anything anymore,
- 41:09Speaker 3: which is a lovely place to work from where it's
- 41:13Speaker 3: just getting to really create to and put out what
- 41:19Speaker 3: I want to put out. So when I talk to
- 41:21Speaker 3: my boss, when I sit down and have meetings with
- 41:22Speaker 3: him about what's next, It's always been a very creative process,
- 41:26Speaker 3: but like over the years, it's become more and more
- 41:29Speaker 3: so where like he knows, I have my finger on
- 41:32Speaker 3: the pulse. I really listen to what my followers are
- 41:34Speaker 3: asking for, what our fans are asking for, what our
- 41:36Speaker 3: coaches are asking for. I'm always learning something new. I'm
- 41:40Speaker 3: trying to stay ahead of the science. With the science,
- 41:43Speaker 3: I've gone through so much. I've gone through issues with
- 41:45Speaker 3: my gut health over the years, so I'm always trying
- 41:48Speaker 3: to bring whatever I've learned to everybody else. So I
- 41:53Speaker 3: look at my struggles as my biggest lessons now that
- 41:57Speaker 3: you know, there's the saying that God doesn't give you
- 41:59Speaker 3: what you can handle, And sometimes I feel like I've
- 42:01Speaker 3: been given the hard things because I can go show
- 42:04Speaker 3: people how to how to work through them, not just
- 42:08Speaker 3: survive them, but really how to thrive in them, how
- 42:10Speaker 3: to thrive in the uncomfortable. And so I'm taking all
- 42:13Speaker 3: of that. I'm taking all of these life experiences, and
- 42:17Speaker 3: that's what's getting put into all of this next chapter
- 42:19Speaker 3: of my life. The new programs, the new my new
- 42:22Speaker 3: nutrition program launched. That's what I think was so much
- 42:25Speaker 3: fun on Revenge Body and the girl that I got
- 42:29Speaker 3: to work with and where she was at in her
- 42:32Speaker 3: life as we were filming that, and being able to
- 42:34Speaker 3: take all of my hurdles, all of my life lessons
- 42:41Speaker 3: and say I've been there, we're gonna be okay, Like
- 42:44Speaker 3: let's work through this together, let's talk it out like
- 42:47Speaker 3: where we at, you know, like really just being able
- 42:49Speaker 3: to take my life lessons into each one of these experiences,
- 42:54Speaker 3: each one of these new products, each one of these
- 42:56Speaker 3: new programs, each one of these new opportunities.
- 42:59Speaker 4: It really like just such a beautiful path. I guess
- 43:06Speaker 4: that I'm on.
- 43:06Speaker 3: It's you can't see the blessing in the rainstorm, you
- 43:14Speaker 3: can't see it when it's happening, And so many people
- 43:17Speaker 3: get stuck in that. So many people get stuck where
- 43:19Speaker 3: it's hard, and they assume that that's just life.
- 43:23Speaker 4: Life is just hard.
- 43:24Speaker 3: Why me?
- 43:25Speaker 4: I'm always the one kicked down.
- 43:26Speaker 3: And the biggest piece of advice I can give to
- 43:28Speaker 3: people is that if you can recognize that somewhere in there,
- 43:32Speaker 3: the blessing will come. And I'm not saying it's coming tomorrow.
- 43:35Speaker 3: I'm not saying it's coming in a month. It might
- 43:37Speaker 3: not even be coming in a year. But there will
- 43:39Speaker 3: be a moment where you will be able to look
- 43:41Speaker 3: back and be like, oh my gosh, I'm so glad
- 43:45Speaker 3: that happened, or I'm so glad that didn't happen, because
- 43:50Speaker 3: if that happened, I wouldn't be here, Or if that
- 43:53Speaker 3: didn't happen, I wouldn't be here. So all of that
- 43:57Speaker 3: has just made the experience, and it makes this next
- 44:01Speaker 3: chapter of everything that I'm creating that much deeper.
- 44:05Speaker 4: And more meaningful for me.
- 44:06Speaker 2: You've had the opportunity to work with so many people
- 44:09Speaker 2: to impact so many people.
- 44:11Speaker 1: When you look back so far on.
- 44:13Speaker 2: Your career, maybe since say twenty twelve, is there any
- 44:17Speaker 2: particular story that you always go back to, any particular
- 44:21Speaker 2: person that has just left this outrageous impact on you.
- 44:26Speaker 3: It's so hard to say that there's one. Of course,
- 44:29Speaker 3: there's so many. Yeah, we just had in July. We
- 44:33Speaker 3: just had our huge event of the year for Beach Body,
- 44:36Speaker 3: where there's twenty thousand people that come and I sat
- 44:40Speaker 3: there and was signing. I was autographing cookbooks for four
- 44:42Speaker 3: hours a day for two days in a row. So
- 44:44Speaker 3: I'm getting to hear everybody's stories, and there's so many
- 44:47Speaker 3: powerful stories.
- 44:48Speaker 4: And some of them are.
- 44:50Speaker 3: Massive weight loss stories. Right there was somebody who lost
- 44:52Speaker 3: one hundred and seventeen pounds. There's been a few of
- 44:57Speaker 3: those people who are unrecognizable because of how much weight
- 45:02Speaker 3: they've lost. But it's not about that number. It's about
- 45:05Speaker 3: what they've gained. It's not about that like, oh, I've
- 45:07Speaker 3: lost one hundred and seventeen punds I lost one hundred
- 45:09Speaker 3: and twenty pound. It's about like, I'm able to be
- 45:11Speaker 3: a good mom again to my kids because I felt
- 45:13Speaker 3: like a bad mom. I felt like I couldn't keep
- 45:16Speaker 3: up with them. I felt like I wasn't giving them
- 45:18Speaker 3: the best version of me, or I was teaching them
- 45:20Speaker 3: the wrong way. To be able to give that to
- 45:22Speaker 3: a mom, to be able to help a mom feel.
- 45:25Speaker 4: That way, that is powerful.
- 45:27Speaker 3: I've had many girls now over the years come up
- 45:31Speaker 3: to me and tell me that they've beat eating disorders
- 45:34Speaker 3: with the ultimate portion, fixed container system, and that isn't
- 45:38Speaker 3: something I could have ever imagined in my wildest dreams
- 45:41Speaker 3: when I was putting that nutrition program together. And for me,
- 45:44Speaker 3: that one's close to home. I've personally have never had
- 45:47Speaker 3: an issue like that. I've never had dealt with food
- 45:51Speaker 3: in that way. But I was a dancer, so I
- 45:54Speaker 3: watched it all the time. I watched girls struggle, and it.
- 45:57Speaker 4: Was heartbreaking to see to.
- 46:01Speaker 3: See people experience that and see how sick they were,
- 46:06Speaker 3: and to feel helpless when somebody's standing next to you
- 46:09Speaker 3: at the ballet bar and like just wondering how they're
- 46:13Speaker 3: holding themselves up. And so to have people come up
- 46:16Speaker 3: to me and say, I've been in and out of
- 46:20Speaker 3: hospitals for treatment, nothing has ever worked, and I finally
- 46:24Speaker 3: feel in control of my food and it's not controlling me.
- 46:28Speaker 3: That that is powerre full. When I've had people come
- 46:33Speaker 3: up to me and say, you helped me through cancer,
- 46:36Speaker 3: you know, like I was going through cancer and your
- 46:38Speaker 3: motivation kept me going throughout the day. Those are all
- 46:44Speaker 3: like those are all just every bit of it, every
- 46:47Speaker 3: single person story, every single person that's shared it with me,
- 46:51Speaker 3: whether it's been in an.
- 46:51Speaker 4: Email or handwritten letter that they've.
- 46:54Speaker 3: Given to me at an event, or the thirty seconds
- 46:57Speaker 3: that they spit it out in a photo line there.
- 47:01Speaker 4: I can't even pick just.
- 47:02Speaker 1: One you mentioned.
- 47:03Speaker 2: We've talked social media, so many people following you, so
- 47:05Speaker 2: many people coming up to you in lines to talk
- 47:07Speaker 2: about cookbooks and workouts and all of the things.
- 47:09Speaker 1: They're so changed by you.
- 47:12Speaker 2: They look at you and they see a role model
- 47:14Speaker 2: and someone that's in shape and has a great attitude
- 47:16Speaker 2: and wants to give them all that she can. When
- 47:19Speaker 2: you look in the mirror, what is it that you see?
- 47:24Speaker 3: I see somebody who's incredibly passionate about helping other people.
- 47:29Speaker 3: And that has become my life. Mission is that, no
- 47:34Speaker 3: matter what is going on my job, my purpose here
- 47:38Speaker 3: is to help people lead a healthier, happier life.
- 47:44Speaker 1: What do you want to do going forward, everything, everything,
- 47:47Speaker 1: all of it.
- 47:48Speaker 4: I want to do all of it.
- 47:49Speaker 1: Are you going to do any more bikini competitions?
- 47:52Speaker 4: Uh?
- 47:52Speaker 3: I don't think I will be competing anymore. I loved
- 47:55Speaker 3: it and it served its purpose for me at that
- 47:58Speaker 3: point in time when I did them. But I am
- 48:00Speaker 3: somebody who gives one hundred and ten percent to everything
- 48:03Speaker 3: I do, and my schedule is just crazy these days,
- 48:06Speaker 3: and fitness competitions require a level of dedication and time
- 48:12Speaker 3: commitment that I don't believe I have to give to
- 48:17Speaker 3: that anymore. And I wouldn't be comfortable stepping on stage
- 48:21Speaker 3: with anything less than one and ten percent.
- 48:24Speaker 4: So it was fun.
- 48:25Speaker 3: It was fun when I did it, But I think
- 48:27Speaker 3: I'm onto other things now. But I love seeing people
- 48:31Speaker 3: use my programs.
- 48:32Speaker 4: To help them prep.
- 48:33Speaker 1: How's life now? Is your son ten and a half? Ten?
- 48:36Speaker 4: Ten? Ten and a half? Yeah?
- 48:37Speaker 1: How How's that?
- 48:39Speaker 4: It's amazing?
- 48:40Speaker 3: He's so much fun.
- 48:42Speaker 4: He's such a ham He's my mini me.
- 48:45Speaker 3: I finally understand what my dad meant when he would
- 48:47Speaker 3: tell me I was so peaceful when I slept because
- 48:50Speaker 3: my son is the ball of energy from the minute
- 48:52Speaker 3: he wakes up until the minute he goes to sleep
- 48:54Speaker 3: that finally, when he falls asleep, I'm like, oh my god,
- 48:56Speaker 3: thank you. Yes, Mommy's gonna sit here and just put
- 48:59Speaker 3: her feet up for a second.
- 49:00Speaker 4: Now. He's so much fun.
- 49:01Speaker 3: He's such a happy, easy kid. Like he's into parkour
- 49:06Speaker 3: and skateboarding and baseball and swimming. And he actually had
- 49:11Speaker 3: his first audition over the weekend and he got a callback.
- 49:16Speaker 1: So what's he auditioning for.
- 49:18Speaker 3: He was auditioning for something for Disney. Oh, so he's
- 49:21Speaker 3: super excited. But then I was talking to him on
- 49:22Speaker 3: the way here actually, and he's super nervous.
- 49:24Speaker 1: Oh.
- 49:24Speaker 2: He's like, like, you got it, You're fine.
- 49:28Speaker 4: But it's so fun.
- 49:29Speaker 3: It's so fun to see that side of him because
- 49:31Speaker 3: I remember as a kid wanting to do all those things,
- 49:34Speaker 3: and I lived in Ohio. I didn't have that opportunity.
- 49:36Speaker 3: So it's really cool to get to give him opportunities
- 49:39Speaker 3: that I didn't get to have it, even though I
- 49:41Speaker 3: wanted him as a kid.
- 49:42Speaker 2: You have the opportunity right now. Looking back on Autumn,
- 49:46Speaker 2: during her total moment, she is thinking she wants to
- 49:50Speaker 2: be a dancer. She's dealing with this man who's not
- 49:53Speaker 2: really treating her. The most fair, and she's really struggling
- 49:56Speaker 2: with that. You have an opportunity right now to offer
- 49:58Speaker 2: her one piece of advice. Looking back on that hurdle moment,
- 50:01Speaker 2: what do you tell her?
- 50:05Speaker 3: Oh, life has so much more for you than you
- 50:07Speaker 3: can even imagine.
- 50:09Speaker 4: Just don't stop, Just don't stop, Just don't stop.
