- 0:06Speaker 1: Welcome to the No Dribble Summer Series. We're not actually
- 0:09Speaker 1: here because we're having a well earned not that well earned,
- 0:12Speaker 1: but a break. Anyway. Where are you cat.
- 0:15Speaker 2: Well, I've got butt sweat at the moment it's hot.
- 0:17Speaker 1: I think I need a cocktail it is. Where's my
- 0:19Speaker 1: poor boy?
- 0:21Speaker 2: Lizzie?
- 0:22Speaker 1: You're off somewhere.
- 0:22Speaker 2: Where are you? I'm sorry, justin Tazzi drinking so much
- 0:27Speaker 2: local whiskey that'll probably see a Tasmanian tiger and forget
- 0:31Speaker 2: what I'm about to say. This is the No Dribble
- 0:33Speaker 2: Summer Series.
- 0:34Speaker 1: Enjoy, guys, Hello and welcome to the No Dribble Summer Series.
- 0:43Speaker 1: When I say welcome, we're of course not here. We
- 0:45Speaker 1: recorded this ages ago. We are still off on holidays,
- 0:48Speaker 1: and in fact someone is still on holidays. That is Catherine.
- 0:51Speaker 1: She is on a plane at the moment, joining us
- 0:54Speaker 1: from well not joining us, in fact, on her way
- 0:57Speaker 1: back from Queensland. So I'm here, Alen Swindell.
- 1:01Speaker 2: I'm here, I'm lez Ellis there?
- 1:02Speaker 1: We go? Two out of three? Ain't bad? That meat
- 1:05Speaker 1: loaf might have been onto something there. And we have
- 1:07Speaker 1: a very exciting guest today, So we're going to go
- 1:10Speaker 1: through our usual routine. I'm going to not get Catherine
- 1:14Speaker 1: to guess. I'm going to get Liz to guess who
- 1:16Speaker 1: our very special guest is today. And yeah, this is
- 1:21Speaker 1: a special guest for us. And here's another clue. We
- 1:25Speaker 1: find we have someone balancing out the court for us
- 1:28Speaker 1: today in Catherine's absence. So here we go. I will
- 1:33Speaker 1: tell you that our special guest has postnominals of both
- 1:37Speaker 1: the Academic and the Honorific variety.
- 1:42Speaker 2: Ah, so she's smart or she's probably a defender.
- 1:44Speaker 1: Then well I did say we're balancing the court though, so.
- 1:48Speaker 2: Maybe I'm not as smart as I like to think
- 1:50Speaker 2: I am.
- 1:50Speaker 1: Then all right, let me give you give you something else.
- 1:56Speaker 1: This person is a multiple Commonwealth Games medallist and medals
- 2:00Speaker 1: of different colors too.
- 2:02Speaker 2: I'll tell you, Okay, well that doesn't really narrow it down.
- 2:06Speaker 2: There's probably two or three countries you could play for.
- 2:08Speaker 2: So she's Australian, she's from New Zealand, she's from England,
- 2:12Speaker 2: either one of those three.
- 2:13Speaker 1: Okay, all right, and this one, here's a bit of
- 2:16Speaker 1: lateral thinking, Liz, If you get this this, this our
- 2:19Speaker 1: guest has played grand finals for the Mavericks, the Lightning
- 2:23Speaker 1: and the Giants. Hmm, Mavericks Carol, and that's weird. Have
- 2:30Speaker 1: the map been in the sun Corps Superneckball Grand Final?
- 2:33Speaker 2: No Oh, you're confusioning me.
- 2:35Speaker 1: I am confusioning you. You're probably thinking about Australian teams,
- 2:39Speaker 1: but some of those teams might be from overseas for
- 2:43Speaker 1: England in two thousand and seven.
- 2:45Speaker 2: Okay, so she's English and she's she's one of Catherine's mates.
- 2:50Speaker 2: So she's at the other end of the course, played
- 2:54Speaker 2: for Lightning and MAVs and Giants. I'm going to say
- 2:57Speaker 2: the Giants of the Australian team. Okay, I'm starting to
- 2:59Speaker 2: form picture.
- 3:00Speaker 1: Yes, yes, it's the Galleria Mavericks and I think it's
- 3:04Speaker 1: Loftbra Lightning. But I'm going to get a pronunciation check
- 3:08Speaker 1: on that. When we reveal our amazing secret gits, here's
- 3:12Speaker 1: the one that never makes any difference whatsoever. I think
- 3:14Speaker 1: our guest is an Aries.
- 3:17Speaker 2: Is that an April birthday?
- 3:19Speaker 1: March?
- 3:20Speaker 2: I believe March. Okay, yep, yep, okay, that makes it right.
- 3:24Speaker 1: There's two final pieces of information I want to tell
- 3:27Speaker 1: you about this person. One will immediately tell you who
- 3:29Speaker 1: it is, and the other one will also immediately tell
- 3:32Speaker 1: you who it is, but is just super fun. So
- 3:34Speaker 1: I'm going to go with the first one, and then
- 3:36Speaker 1: you can sit silently while want to. This person played
- 3:39Speaker 1: her final game of Sun Cops Supernetball and slotted a
- 3:42Speaker 1: two pointer in the last seconds of her final game,
- 3:46Speaker 1: and we all nearly wet our pants with excitement and
- 3:49Speaker 1: post retirement, this person's drink of choice is Bollinger champagne.
- 3:56Speaker 2: That confirms that she has excellent taste despite being a
- 3:59Speaker 2: goal she despite being English. Our guest is.
- 4:02Speaker 1: Jotan guest is Joe Harton. How exciting.
- 4:06Speaker 2: But you just did say, Carolyn that it was Bollinger.
- 4:10Speaker 2: Post retirement, Joe, welcome to you is what was the drink?
- 4:14Speaker 2: Pre retirement? Power aid of course, Oh of course, no
- 4:19Speaker 2: one believes that for a second. Welcome to the pod. Thanks,
- 4:23Speaker 2: thanks guys, thanks for having me. How's retirement treating you.
- 4:26Speaker 3: It's pretty good so far. Looking after a small baby,
- 4:29Speaker 3: most of my days, not doing pre season, not sweating
- 4:33Speaker 3: in a gym, it's been pretty good.
- 4:35Speaker 2: How was your This will tell me whether you were
- 4:37Speaker 2: ready to retire when you saw your teammates go back
- 4:41Speaker 2: into pre season. What was your reaction.
- 4:43Speaker 3: I literally see some of the photos on social media
- 4:46Speaker 3: and I just like, I just scroll on by. I'm like,
- 4:49Speaker 3: I do not have to get involved in the sweatbox.
- 4:51Speaker 3: I don't have to push any weights. I don't have
- 4:54Speaker 3: to turn up at seven am and be enthusiastic. It's
- 4:57Speaker 3: just amazing.
- 4:58Speaker 2: You were ready for retirement then, so ready tell us
- 5:01Speaker 2: about your little girl. Yeah, a little girl, little Eddie
- 5:04Speaker 2: Eddie James harton eight months old, keeping us on our
- 5:07Speaker 2: toes very much, so, learning all about the world and
- 5:11Speaker 2: of course not sleeping an awful lot. So yeah, it's
- 5:14Speaker 2: been an interesting eight months, but where we're just kind of, yeah,
- 5:18Speaker 2: toughed with how she's developing. Yeah, is she walking yet?
- 5:22Speaker 2: Not walking?
- 5:23Speaker 3: She's trying to crawl and trying to move. She's at
- 5:26Speaker 3: that kind of stage and phase. So we're just edging
- 5:30Speaker 3: her closely along, putting the TV control in front of
- 5:33Speaker 3: her to give us some motivation.
- 5:34Speaker 2: Of course. Of course, funny, you know you spend all
- 5:37Speaker 2: this time trying to get your kids to talk and walk,
- 5:39Speaker 2: and then when they start, you're like, oh, just be
- 5:41Speaker 2: quiet and sit down.
- 5:42Speaker 3: Yeah, that's the next stage we're scared of, of course, running
- 5:45Speaker 3: out to the kitchen and she's actually going to follow
- 5:47Speaker 3: us through, So.
- 5:47Speaker 2: Oh, no, far up. Do you think you could have
- 5:51Speaker 2: played like because you've been playing at a high level
- 5:54Speaker 2: when she was at this age, or would have been
- 5:56Speaker 2: really difficult in terms of your sleep deprivation.
- 5:58Speaker 3: Well, she was actually born on three days before the
- 6:01Speaker 3: start of my last season, so I guess I kind
- 6:05Speaker 3: of navigated that season through sleep deprivation. But I think,
- 6:10Speaker 3: you know, kind of when I see those mum's return
- 6:13Speaker 3: to the court year after year, I'm like, how are
- 6:15Speaker 3: you doing it? Like, you're seriously impressive. I obviously didn't
- 6:19Speaker 3: give birth, my partner did, so throw that into the
- 6:22Speaker 3: mix of your body as well. It's i mean just
- 6:24Speaker 3: in awe, absolute awe of those that return to professional sport. Well, actually,
- 6:28Speaker 3: I'm in a review, like playing a whole season with
- 6:31Speaker 3: a newborn in your household, that's super impressive. Did you
- 6:33Speaker 3: have to change up any of your routine or anything
- 6:36Speaker 3: that you did to make sure you've got enough rest?
- 6:39Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean the routine went out the window. I guess.
- 6:43Speaker 3: My routine went out and then baby's routine came in.
- 6:46Speaker 3: But yeah, I think we tried to be smart around
- 6:49Speaker 3: game days and then in the week we just you know,
- 6:51Speaker 3: you just have to make it work, have to wing
- 6:53Speaker 3: it as best you can. And I guess there's something
- 6:57Speaker 3: different when you're playing as a parent. You can play
- 6:59Speaker 3: on that kind of love hormone, I guess. So that's
- 7:01Speaker 3: pretty much how I got through. Puts it all into perspective,
- 7:04Speaker 3: doesn't it.
- 7:05Speaker 2: When you've got kids, you're like, might need to be
- 7:07Speaker 2: as selfish an individual as I used to be as
- 7:09Speaker 2: an athlete. Absolutely so. Joe, in retirement, we saw the
- 7:13Speaker 2: first big and now so you had signed on to
- 7:16Speaker 2: work with the Swifts. Oh yeah, yeah. What was that
- 7:19Speaker 2: like when you got the call from Briani?
- 7:21Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean it's it's been a while, whind, I
- 7:23Speaker 3: guess jumping across to the cross town rivals, the Swifts,
- 7:27Speaker 3: I think, you know. When I spoke to Briani and
- 7:30Speaker 3: the opportunity almost presented itself to be, you know, the
- 7:32Speaker 3: shooting specialists coach at the Swifts, it was just excited me.
- 7:36Speaker 3: I was obviously a Giants player for eight nine years,
- 7:39Speaker 3: loved my time in the Orange playing, but I feel
- 7:42Speaker 3: like coaching is a whole different beast, and I want
- 7:44Speaker 3: to learn from the best. I want to be in,
- 7:46Speaker 3: you know, environments that I can really challenge me. And yeah,
- 7:50Speaker 3: when I spoke to Brian on the phone, super impressed
- 7:52Speaker 3: with how she comes across as a person, not just
- 7:55Speaker 3: as a coach, and yeah, really excited to learn from her.
- 7:58Speaker 1: Can I ask a question about this and I'll just
- 8:01Speaker 1: give you a bit of context here. My under elevens
- 8:04Speaker 1: didn't win a game this season, and it was because
- 8:07Speaker 1: of our shooting. And I don't know how to coach
- 8:09Speaker 1: shooting because I'm five foot two. I've never been in
- 8:12Speaker 1: a goal circle like here. It's quite lovely in there.
- 8:14Speaker 1: I don't know, don't know anything about it. How do
- 8:16Speaker 1: you coach a shooter? How do you coach a shooter
- 8:18Speaker 1: like Grace workI or Helen Howsby, Like I think, like, I.
- 8:21Speaker 3: Don't know how to coach Grace Worky yet. I haven't
- 8:24Speaker 3: formally had the opportunity yet. But my philosophy as a
- 8:27Speaker 3: shooting coach is do everything that you might experience in
- 8:32Speaker 3: a game in a match, do that in training. So
- 8:34Speaker 3: simple things like making sure you're putting up the right
- 8:37Speaker 3: number of shots that you would in a game with
- 8:39Speaker 3: the right amount of pressure on them. I'm slightly unorthodox
- 8:42Speaker 3: I've played kind of on orthodox netble throughout my career,
- 8:46Speaker 3: so I like to throw different challenges at shooters. At
- 8:49Speaker 3: any moment, I'll just say this is the last shot
- 8:50Speaker 3: at the session. If you score it, we'll carry on.
- 8:53Speaker 3: If you miss, the sessions done, and I like just
- 8:56Speaker 3: put little points of pressure on the shooters, you know,
- 8:58Speaker 3: try and make it as not as boring as sounding
- 9:02Speaker 3: under the post and just shooting two hundred?
- 9:04Speaker 1: How many? Like when you were playing cast your Mind
- 9:07Speaker 1: back four months, five months, six months, however on weround,
- 9:11Speaker 1: how many goals did you practice shooting a day? What
- 9:13Speaker 1: was an average day for you?
- 9:15Speaker 3: I always just say, like a thousand a week was
- 9:18Speaker 3: a good marker for me. You have like three or
- 9:21Speaker 3: four court sessions where you'd rack up probably like five
- 9:24Speaker 3: hundred in the actual session where you're just going through
- 9:27Speaker 3: center pass structure or just drills. And then there's always
- 9:30Speaker 3: time alone at the post where I like to really
- 9:33Speaker 3: try and internalize a few things that I might have
- 9:35Speaker 3: got wrong the week before, or you know, like imagine
- 9:38Speaker 3: a big horrible defender in front of me and just
- 9:41Speaker 3: kind of Liz, you know, like Liz, Yeah, she's March.
- 9:44Speaker 3: We once rejected me three times in ten minutes. That's
- 9:47Speaker 3: not great.
- 9:47Speaker 2: Then well you were you were like seventeen and I
- 9:52Speaker 2: was thirty four. That was when I knew it was
- 9:54Speaker 2: time to retire because I played was playing against his
- 9:56Speaker 2: kid who was half my age, or a tour over
- 9:58Speaker 2: in England. Yeah, good like first first cat ring the
- 10:03Speaker 2: name who you playing? The Australian legend Lise Alis have it?
- 10:06Speaker 2: Thank you, Baptism of Fire.
- 10:09Speaker 1: Honestly, we've chopped in the past on the pot about
- 10:27Speaker 1: a time when Catherine had the yips, when she just
- 10:30Speaker 1: lost her shooting moji. Did that ever happen to you?
- 10:33Speaker 2: I wouldn't say I've ever like lost my mojo.
- 10:36Speaker 3: I think there was a stage there when I was
- 10:38Speaker 3: kind of going from goal shooter predominantly to then playing
- 10:40Speaker 3: out a goal attack and two kind of different roles,
- 10:43Speaker 3: you know, a lot more running and movement a goal
- 10:45Speaker 3: attack and almost like forgot to shoot, you know, I
- 10:48Speaker 3: forgot to have that as as probably one.
- 10:51Speaker 1: Want to think about with your lip bloss and your
- 10:53Speaker 1: hair and things as a goal attack, aren't they Like
- 10:55Speaker 1: you just got different priorities.
- 10:58Speaker 3: Especially me, like I always playing a full face of makeup,
- 11:01Speaker 3: and it really was a different art forment goal attack totally. Hey,
- 11:08Speaker 3: can I ask then when you like when the super
- 11:11Speaker 3: shot came in. You're always one of the most entertaining
- 11:14Speaker 3: players to watch, right because you're always really thinking about
- 11:17Speaker 3: how do you utilize the time, how do you utilize
- 11:19Speaker 3: the opportunity for the super shot? So I loved watching
- 11:22Speaker 3: you play that that came in. Obviously in the back
- 11:25Speaker 3: end of your career. Did that whole challenge of working
- 11:28Speaker 3: out the different tactical aspects.
- 11:30Speaker 2: Did that add to your longevity or give you a
- 11:32Speaker 2: bit of a lift in the back end of your
- 11:34Speaker 2: career having something really different come into the game.
- 11:36Speaker 3: I actually think it improved my stocks without me really
- 11:39Speaker 3: knowing it, Like all of a sudden, I was, you know,
- 11:42Speaker 3: shooting these like long range ones, and then now they're
- 11:45Speaker 3: worth two points in the back end of every quarter,
- 11:48Speaker 3: you know, I kind of fainlessly said when it first
- 11:51Speaker 3: came in, like, I don't like this rule because I
- 11:53Speaker 3: don't think it should be like a spectacle where I
- 11:55Speaker 3: feel like shooters should be able to shoot from everywhere
- 11:57Speaker 3: in the circle. And now we're kind of making a
- 11:59Speaker 3: big thing. But I think towards the end of my
- 12:01Speaker 3: career I fell in love with a two point a
- 12:03Speaker 3: little bit, not because of my attempts at it, but
- 12:06Speaker 3: also seeing the young kids around me actually be brave, and.
- 12:10Speaker 2: It wasn't just about two point shot.
- 12:11Speaker 3: It was about them having the capability to take it
- 12:14Speaker 3: on for the team, knowing if you miss, it's going
- 12:17Speaker 3: down the other end, and their scoring and yeah, I
- 12:19Speaker 3: think towards the end of the creer it definitely kind
- 12:22Speaker 3: of rung true that it was a great thing for us.
- 12:24Speaker 1: Bought as a fan. I love the difference when I
- 12:27Speaker 1: watch Test netball that we don't have it for me.
- 12:30Speaker 1: It gives a great variety in what I'm watching on court,
- 12:33Speaker 1: which is really nice. We can't just rely on that.
- 12:37Speaker 1: We've got to peg this back one by one.
- 12:39Speaker 3: Yeah, I think, you know, like international netball, I'm not
- 12:42Speaker 3: sure I want to see introduced there because I feel
- 12:45Speaker 3: like the matches are few and far between. You might
- 12:47Speaker 3: have seven or eight tests a year, and I feel like,
- 12:50Speaker 3: you know, if you're the team that's prepared the best,
- 12:53Speaker 3: is the most skillful in the day, I don't think
- 12:55Speaker 3: there should be an opportunity to claw it back just
- 12:59Speaker 3: at the hand of a long range shooter. With that
- 13:01Speaker 3: being said, I also want that well to be as
- 13:04Speaker 3: exciting as possible, and I know it adds that extra
- 13:06Speaker 3: flavor for the fan, So it's a healthy balance.
- 13:09Speaker 1: I think.
- 13:09Speaker 2: Yeah, it's interesting, isn't it In terms of your coaching.
- 13:12Speaker 2: Obviously you're taking on this specialist role with the Swifts,
- 13:15Speaker 2: but you know, you're a pretty accomplished person outside of netball.
- 13:20Speaker 2: You've got, you know, university degree in the.
- 13:22Speaker 1: BA in international relations, and I believe a graduate certificate underway.
- 13:27Speaker 1: Is that right, Joe?
- 13:29Speaker 2: Yeah? So what do your do you see yourself sort
- 13:31Speaker 2: of continuing with coaching, do you see yourself doing something else,
- 13:34Speaker 2: staying in the game, what's your What's what's the long
- 13:37Speaker 2: term plans for Joe Harten?
- 13:39Speaker 3: Look, I think the reason I undertook the grads and
- 13:42Speaker 3: I just finished it this year in sport management and
- 13:44Speaker 3: business is because I want to stay in elite sport
- 13:47Speaker 3: and I'm super passionate about netball and I want to
- 13:50Speaker 3: use any skills that I have. I want to pass
- 13:52Speaker 3: them forward wherever that be in a coaching role, you know,
- 13:56Speaker 3: in the future as a full time gig. I'm not sure,
- 13:59Speaker 3: but I know my heart lies in the sport, you know,
- 14:02Speaker 3: for my seedents. I can't just get rid of it
- 14:04Speaker 3: after playing. I'm still heavily involved. And yeah, I think
- 14:09Speaker 3: I've been lucky enough to have been afforded a few
- 14:11Speaker 3: months after retiring to actually just explore and I want
- 14:13Speaker 3: to do so. I'm starting small with the shooting specialists
- 14:17Speaker 3: roll at the Swifts, and hopefully I'll build that up
- 14:19Speaker 3: into something more permanent within the sport and the business
- 14:23Speaker 3: side of the sport in the months to come.
- 14:25Speaker 1: As a member of both the Swifts and the Giants.
- 14:29Speaker 1: Really disappointed that the Giants weren't pursuing you more aggressively.
- 14:33Speaker 1: I don't know what the backstory is, but when I
- 14:35Speaker 1: heard you were going to the Swifts, I was like ooh,
- 14:37Speaker 1: and then I thought, ah, hang on why. I think
- 14:39Speaker 1: the Giants should never have let an opportunity pass. But anyway,
- 14:43Speaker 1: as very excited as a swiftspan.
- 14:45Speaker 2: Yeah, look it is.
- 14:47Speaker 3: I've had a few like hairy comments like why are
- 14:49Speaker 3: you not loyal to the Giants, and I guess my
- 14:52Speaker 3: simple answer is that I'm a competitive beast, and yeah,
- 14:56Speaker 3: you know, I want to I want to grow my game.
- 14:59Speaker 3: I want want to be the best coach I can be,
- 15:01Speaker 3: and I also chased opportunity where it lies, and that
- 15:05Speaker 3: was with the Swifts. And yeah, I'm super grateful to
- 15:08Speaker 3: now be wearing the red and yeah, super grateful that
- 15:10Speaker 3: they've opened I guess the door to me to let
- 15:13Speaker 3: me into their environment because you know, it's a really
- 15:15Speaker 3: special environment.
- 15:17Speaker 2: So exciting, Joe.
- 15:18Speaker 1: Keep you in Australia now, are where is your Is
- 15:21Speaker 1: the Australia home or are you still kind of lost
- 15:25Speaker 1: between two shores? Was that a Neil Diamond? Quite? I
- 15:28Speaker 1: think Liz.
- 15:30Speaker 2: Whre's Neil Diamond. I'm way too young for that. Oh
- 15:36Speaker 2: make chl Harten will have to wrap it up right here,
- 15:37Speaker 2: right now. I'm sorry.
- 15:41Speaker 3: Australia is definitely home now. Obviously born and bred in
- 15:44Speaker 3: the UK and I am English. You know I'm still
- 15:46Speaker 3: cheering on the England boys and the Ashes.
- 15:50Speaker 2: What a shame for you? I know it makes it interesting.
- 15:54Speaker 1: One. I was born in New Zealand and I'm a
- 15:55Speaker 1: Wallabies fan. When I have a choice, I could be
- 15:57Speaker 1: an All Backs fan. It's like it's just you know,
- 15:59Speaker 1: you just it's got to go where your heart tells
- 16:01Speaker 1: you you are right. You can't just suddenly go. I'm
- 16:03Speaker 1: now changing teams.
- 16:04Speaker 3: So yeah, unless you know it's a World Cup environment
- 16:08Speaker 3: like rugby and you're in the country and things are
- 16:13Speaker 3: starting to bubble the right way for one one team,
- 16:15Speaker 3: then I could switch allegiances.
- 16:18Speaker 1: Are you mother of an Australian?
- 16:20Speaker 3: I believe I've married an Australian. I've now got an
- 16:23Speaker 3: Australian daughter. Yeah, I'm an Australian resident, So you know.
- 16:28Speaker 1: Come on in.
- 16:29Speaker 2: It's only a matter of time.
- 16:32Speaker 1: Joe.
- 16:32Speaker 2: When you first did you come? You came from the
- 16:35Speaker 2: English Super League into Super Netball? You didn't? Or do
- 16:38Speaker 2: you come by way of New Zealand? I can't remember
- 16:40Speaker 2: New Zealand?
- 16:41Speaker 3: So five years over there to in christ Church it's
- 16:45Speaker 3: my first kind of two in A and Z and
- 16:46Speaker 3: then three under Jewels Fitzgerald at the Magic and then
- 16:50Speaker 3: she brought me over here.
- 16:51Speaker 2: So when she came and took up the head coaching
- 16:54Speaker 2: rather of the Giants, was it just a no brainer
- 16:55Speaker 2: for you to follow her?
- 16:57Speaker 1: It was?
- 16:58Speaker 2: It was really unfortunate.
- 16:59Speaker 3: Like two weeks prior to her giving me the call
- 17:03Speaker 3: to say she's going, I'd actually got my New Zealand residency,
- 17:07Speaker 3: been to the bank in New Zealand, got like a
- 17:10Speaker 3: home loan, approved, and I was.
- 17:12Speaker 2: Like completely, yeah, completely, sat and settled in New Zealand.
- 17:15Speaker 3: You know, I love the netball, I love the environment
- 17:18Speaker 3: and where everything was. But yeah, then I think we
- 17:21Speaker 3: were driving up to Auckland one day, just me and
- 17:24Speaker 3: Jewels would sometimes hang out, and she was like, oh,
- 17:27Speaker 3: do you want to go to Australia next year? And
- 17:29Speaker 3: I said yes, without asking like where, why?
- 17:32Speaker 2: When? So you just knew it was her and that
- 17:35Speaker 2: was it her in Australia you were there, absolutely.
- 17:39Speaker 1: Might be wasted in netball. She sounds like she would
- 17:41Speaker 1: have been an awesome cult leader. Like the number of
- 17:43Speaker 1: people yep, sure, Casey Coppu are sure, yeah, come on
- 17:47Speaker 1: or come out of retirement whatever you two lizard cat.
- 17:50Speaker 1: You know you'd march into battle behind this woman, for sure,
- 17:53Speaker 1: they go. Jules, there's a red hot tip. If you
- 17:55Speaker 1: get bored with all your international coaching.
- 17:58Speaker 2: Jobs, could lea I think here as a cult leader.
- 18:03Speaker 1: I think it would be more lucrative than being involved
- 18:06Speaker 1: in netball, wouldn't it.
- 18:07Speaker 2: It depends. I know she can get blood out of
- 18:09Speaker 2: the stone, that woman. So yeah, yeah, she's amazing. So
- 18:13Speaker 2: so obviously you and so this car trip, you're like yep,
- 18:16Speaker 2: happy days. And then how did how did it unfold?
- 18:19Speaker 2: After that?
- 18:19Speaker 3: Well, I think she the first question she asked is
- 18:21Speaker 3: do you want to come to Australia. Response yes, second question,
- 18:25Speaker 3: can you get Serena Guthri to come? Who was my
- 18:28Speaker 3: best mate at the time she was living in Auckland
- 18:30Speaker 3: playing for the Mystics. And I just said, yeah, sure,
- 18:34Speaker 3: I'll give it my best shot. And I rang Serena,
- 18:36Speaker 3: I think that night when we got to Auckland, and
- 18:37Speaker 3: I said, hey mate, do you want to gun play
- 18:40Speaker 3: in Sydney, you know.
- 18:42Speaker 2: For Jules?
- 18:42Speaker 3: And she said yes as well about asking many questions,
- 18:45Speaker 3: so maybe we're just two dumb English people were just
- 18:48Speaker 3: kind of wrapped up in a netble bubble. But yeah,
- 18:51Speaker 3: after that, I remember Jules she had a few offers
- 18:54Speaker 3: on the table of where to go and what club
- 18:57Speaker 3: to kind of set up and start, and she know,
- 19:00Speaker 3: Sydney's her home. And once she decided that, you know,
- 19:03Speaker 3: it was going to be Sydney, it was then what's
- 19:04Speaker 3: the club going to be called? What are the colors?
- 19:06Speaker 3: And I've got very vivid memories of sitting in a
- 19:09Speaker 3: friend's house with jewels, with a glass of wine, saying okay.
- 19:12Speaker 2: So should the club be called this?
- 19:13Speaker 3: And we were just coming out some absolute like wacky
- 19:16Speaker 3: names and then a couple of weeks later it was
- 19:19Speaker 3: it was landed on that it was going to be
- 19:20Speaker 3: Giants Netball run by Netball New South Wales. But we've
- 19:23Speaker 3: an alliance with gw ASS and the rest is history.
- 19:27Speaker 1: So this will give everyone listening an indication of when
- 19:30Speaker 1: we've recorded this that Neple Australia's announced that they're looking
- 19:33Speaker 1: for expressions of interest for two more super Netball teams
- 19:37Speaker 1: and any thoughts on any pinions question without notice here
- 19:42Speaker 1: where we should be looking to plug in some extra teams.
- 19:46Speaker 3: Well, I've always liked the idea of Netville and Tazzi
- 19:48Speaker 3: played a couple of Super Netwle games there. Me and
- 19:51Speaker 3: my wife have a long standing joke that she would
- 19:55Speaker 3: move her career to Tazzy if neatble opportunity came up
- 19:58Speaker 3: for me. There lovely scenery, but I think it's great.
- 20:02Speaker 3: I think, you know, if there's talk of expansion on
- 20:06Speaker 3: the horizon, that's a really good thing for super Netball.
- 20:09Speaker 3: But I think it has to be you know, in
- 20:11Speaker 3: the areas that first they have the appetite. They secondly
- 20:14Speaker 3: have the fan base. I think what I've learned, you know,
- 20:16Speaker 3: being the second team in Sydney, is that it's hard
- 20:19Speaker 3: to create I guess, you know, the automatic fans that
- 20:22Speaker 3: show up through each and every week. So somewhere there
- 20:25Speaker 3: is crying out for sport. Maybe a Tazzi I think
- 20:28Speaker 3: would be a really great addition to super Netball.
- 20:31Speaker 1: What was it like playing down there, so big local
- 20:34Speaker 1: contingent coming out to watch.
- 20:37Speaker 3: Yeah, we played there I think three years ago and
- 20:40Speaker 3: stayed impact super keen fans and you know, just really enthusiastic.
- 20:45Speaker 3: It's almost an idea that you know, they're grateful that
- 20:49Speaker 3: we've journeyed there because they don't get much live sport.
- 20:53Speaker 3: But I just remember, yeah, being a bore. You know,
- 20:55Speaker 3: it was people stopping you in the street when you're
- 20:57Speaker 3: going to get your coffee. You know, hear the game tonight,
- 21:00Speaker 3: and yeah, it was a super welcoming environment in Tazy
- 21:04Speaker 3: And yeah, I think playing games over there is a
- 21:08Speaker 3: special experience.
- 21:09Speaker 1: We have a lot of dribblers who would agree with
- 21:11Speaker 1: you that that would be a good spot. They're from Tasmania.
- 21:14Speaker 1: Not coincidentally, I'll go.
- 21:17Speaker 2: To Tazzy for Christmas. Oh, look for Christmas for January.
- 21:20Speaker 2: So I'll do some scouting down there for you, Joe.
- 21:22Speaker 2: I'll have a look around. Good work. Yes, thanks is
- 21:24Speaker 2: what I do. So Joe, just going back to you know,
- 21:30Speaker 2: you came through England, into New Zealand and then into Australia.
- 21:33Speaker 2: What's your reflection on where the game sits in each
- 21:36Speaker 2: of those countries having played it all three?
- 21:38Speaker 3: Yeah, I think it's interesting for me looking I guess
- 21:41Speaker 3: back to when I played in the Super League. I
- 21:43Speaker 3: was in that generation that used to pay to play,
- 21:46Speaker 3: and then it kind of got like, okay, you don't
- 21:48Speaker 3: have to pay anymore, but we're not going to pay you.
- 21:50Speaker 3: And then I think in my last year of Super League,
- 21:52Speaker 3: like my expenses were paid and I had a scholarship
- 21:54Speaker 3: at UNI and that was it. And I was you know,
- 21:56Speaker 3: I was playing for England at that point, and then
- 21:59Speaker 3: came along my first contract in New Zealand, which was
- 22:02Speaker 3: you know, for absolute minimum wage. But I was just
- 22:04Speaker 3: so excited to get to get the offer. And I
- 22:07Speaker 3: think when I played in New Zealand, it was that
- 22:10Speaker 3: joint A and Z comp playing against the Aussies, and
- 22:13Speaker 3: you know, it used to be very scared to come
- 22:15Speaker 3: on to Australia because you weren't going to win, essentially
- 22:18Speaker 3: to then arriving in super netbw and just thinking it's okay,
- 22:21Speaker 3: this is a couple of steps up from England, another
- 22:24Speaker 3: step up from New Zealand. So that's kind of I
- 22:26Speaker 3: guess my playing experience. When I look at it now,
- 22:29Speaker 3: I feel like the Super League in the UK is
- 22:32Speaker 3: of a hot drive at the moment. It's really trying
- 22:34Speaker 3: to raise the standards. I know there's you know, some
- 22:37Speaker 3: really good investors coming on board. Netwul super League two
- 22:40Speaker 3: point zero was a raving success last year, so I
- 22:45Speaker 3: think it's all heading in the right direction. But you know,
- 22:47Speaker 3: I have to say super NETBWL is just the out
- 22:50Speaker 3: and out standout like in terms of professionalism away from
- 22:54Speaker 3: match day, you can't beat it. You know, the environments
- 22:57Speaker 3: that super Netbowl clubs have created here a second to none,
- 23:02Speaker 3: and for me, it produces the best team environments, team
- 23:05Speaker 3: cultures and therefore the best netball.
- 23:07Speaker 2: So you know, the thing like when back in the
- 23:10Speaker 2: olden days when I played, the main difference if you
- 23:12Speaker 2: were to ask me what the difference was between cate League,
- 23:16Speaker 2: Super netball or national league and international. The thing that
- 23:19Speaker 2: really differentiates the me is the speed at which the
- 23:21Speaker 2: game is played. And every time you step up, you're like, whoa,
- 23:24Speaker 2: this is that last level that I was at on steroids,
- 23:27Speaker 2: because it's just everything just happened so much faster. But
- 23:31Speaker 2: I do feel now like there's not a lot of
- 23:33Speaker 2: difference between the speed of super netball and the speed
- 23:36Speaker 2: of the international game. Is that is that right? Yeah?
- 23:39Speaker 2: I think so.
- 23:39Speaker 3: Like you know, when I played for England and said,
- 23:42Speaker 3: like the twenty eighteen common games, having played in super
- 23:45Speaker 3: netbaw for like the year prior to that, and we
- 23:48Speaker 3: get to the games and playing against New Zealand, like
- 23:51Speaker 3: that game actually felt kind of slow paced, like it
- 23:54Speaker 3: it wasn't as intense maybe like body on body type netball,
- 23:58Speaker 3: but you had to use a brain a bit more.
- 24:00Speaker 3: But yeah, I think we played you know, obviously the
- 24:02Speaker 3: Aussies and everything felt natural, whereas previously, you know, having
- 24:08Speaker 3: played in England or in New Zealand, when you came
- 24:09Speaker 3: up against the Aussie's like rihing to get like everything
- 24:13Speaker 3: right today, So I've got the energy to match this
- 24:16Speaker 3: on court, Like the speed that the ball.
- 24:18Speaker 2: Placement, the ball movement.
- 24:20Speaker 3: But yeah, I think supernapples wonders for the international gate
- 24:25Speaker 3: inviting so many imports in and it's actually very substandard
- 24:28Speaker 3: of world netpl I think.
- 24:30Speaker 1: So we are almost out of time, and one thing
- 24:33Speaker 1: that we always do with our guests is put them
- 24:35Speaker 1: into Coxy's hot box. Now she's not here today and
- 24:39Speaker 1: we don't have the list of questions because that would
- 24:42Speaker 1: have required talking to her before she got on her flight,
- 24:45Speaker 1: and we didn't manage to do that. So Liz and
- 24:47Speaker 1: I are going to do our best to put you
- 24:50Speaker 1: through your paces in Coxy's hot box. This is fast
- 24:53Speaker 1: fire questions and unless we decide something's interesting or you
- 24:58Speaker 1: want to go off in a tangent, then that's totally
- 25:00Speaker 1: okay too. So Liz, let's just do what we will
- 25:03Speaker 1: do our best. We'll make do it. We've got five
- 25:06Speaker 1: a side here today, we're on court. We don't have
- 25:09Speaker 1: a full seven, but we'll go. Okay, So coffee, order
- 25:12Speaker 1: swee latte very in a Sydney tomato sauce in the
- 25:16Speaker 1: fridge or the cupboard in the fridge.
- 25:20Speaker 2: I think that's smart. You're married to a doctor. She
- 25:23Speaker 2: would tell you that you got to have your tomato
- 25:24Speaker 2: sauce in the fridge in Australia. But there's so many
- 25:27Speaker 2: preserve that you've seen it. I don't know that it
- 25:29Speaker 2: would matter, would summer or winter? Winter? Christmas in winter?
- 25:36Speaker 2: Oh that would be good.
- 25:37Speaker 1: Come on beach Christmas. Do you love it? Have you?
- 25:41Speaker 1: Are you coming around to the idea or is it
- 25:44Speaker 1: just still feel very strange? No?
- 25:46Speaker 3: Because I can't see my Christmas lights on my tree
- 25:49Speaker 3: outside my house until nine pm. Like it doesn't make
- 25:52Speaker 3: sense that you see them at two pm.
- 25:55Speaker 1: It's that dark.
- 25:58Speaker 2: Wow, you're painting the picture.
- 26:01Speaker 1: This is not coxyes hot box?
- 26:02Speaker 3: But is it?
- 26:03Speaker 1: Lough Brough? Did I pronounce that correctly?
- 26:05Speaker 2: Luff brough luffbruh?
- 26:06Speaker 1: Beg your pardon, I'm sorry. What else? Have we got
- 26:09Speaker 1: a favorite holiday destination?
- 26:11Speaker 2: Oh? Majorca off of Spain. Very nice? Have you been there, Carolyn?
- 26:16Speaker 1: No, I have not.
- 26:18Speaker 2: I have to take your word for it. Na.
- 26:19Speaker 1: Yeah, was that a pre kid holiday?
- 26:22Speaker 3: Oh? Yeah, that was like family holiday two hours from
- 26:24Speaker 3: London once the year of the year for ten years.
- 26:27Speaker 1: So it wasn't like an early twenties party. Drugs, let's
- 26:31Speaker 1: go to No, I'm thinking of a Betha aren't. I yes,
- 26:36Speaker 1: very definitely from Christopher's case territory, which would make as
- 26:40Speaker 1: much sense to you as Neil Diamond favorite sport that's
- 26:45Speaker 1: not netball?
- 26:45Speaker 2: AFL was your rules?
- 26:47Speaker 1: Who's your team?
- 26:48Speaker 2: I can't say that on here.
- 26:50Speaker 1: Interesting I'll get.
- 26:51Speaker 2: Called not loyal again. I love the Giants? Is her team?
- 26:55Speaker 2: I think? Hey, so before but before you discovered AFL,
- 27:00Speaker 2: did you what was your other? What was your favorite
- 27:02Speaker 2: sport before that? Football?
- 27:05Speaker 3: Growing up in the UK, big Tottenham Hotspur fan, still
- 27:08Speaker 3: am just you have to wake up at like three
- 27:11Speaker 3: am to watch it over here, it doesn't have the
- 27:14Speaker 3: same spark.
- 27:15Speaker 2: No, my nine year old tells me he's a Man
- 27:17Speaker 2: City fan and he's never got out of bed once
- 27:19Speaker 2: to watch them at three am. So he's not. He's
- 27:21Speaker 2: just like submerged. I think, yeah, just wear the shirt.
- 27:24Speaker 1: Yep, Liz, I reckon? Are we are we at the
- 27:27Speaker 1: final the most? No?
- 27:28Speaker 2: Not yet. There's one other.
- 27:29Speaker 1: What's your breakfast go to Oh you a good one.
- 27:32Speaker 3: Let's go typical bow Main breakfast, scrambled eggs on toasts
- 27:38Speaker 3: with the side of crispy bacon.
- 27:40Speaker 2: Oh nice? You tarted up like boomin? Is there like
- 27:42Speaker 2: a bit of green Gottess sauce or you know, chili
- 27:45Speaker 2: oil or something on it. No, my local coffee house
- 27:48Speaker 2: bring me my tomato sauce on the side without my
- 27:50Speaker 2: masking stop it.
- 27:52Speaker 1: Do you think they bring it to room temperature before
- 27:54Speaker 1: they do that or do they know this woman wants
- 27:56Speaker 1: it straight from the fridge.
- 27:57Speaker 2: I get it straight from the fridge.
- 28:00Speaker 1: Wow, Liz, I'm worried about this last question.
- 28:03Speaker 2: After that, I'm worried too, because I feel like you
- 28:06Speaker 2: could keep your tomato sauce in the cupboard because it
- 28:08Speaker 2: wouldn't last long enough to get moldy. Exactly.
- 28:12Speaker 1: Yeah, okay, well, I want you to ask this question.
- 28:15Speaker 2: Okay, now, remember before you answer that, I'm married to
- 28:18Speaker 2: a beef farmer. How do you have your steak cooked
- 28:23Speaker 2: meatium rare? Yeah? Retrieves the day? Well done.
- 28:28Speaker 1: I thought we were going to have to cancel the
- 28:30Speaker 1: whole show. Do you then put tomato sauce with it?
- 28:35Speaker 2: I was gonna ask the same question.
- 28:38Speaker 3: So I had like fifty dollars steak from the butcher
- 28:41Speaker 3: last night, cooked meatium rare, and I did, and had
- 28:44Speaker 3: a lovely beech eat salad and I did have It's
- 28:46Speaker 3: just a small amount of tomato sauce of it, just.
- 28:48Speaker 1: To give it that lovely edge, just so you didn't
- 28:53Speaker 1: feel too fancy. You thought, I've got to have some
- 28:55Speaker 1: tomato sauce. Did you have your bowland your champagne with that?
- 28:58Speaker 1: It was a Sunday, No.
- 28:59Speaker 2: It was no.
- 29:01Speaker 3: We we had an alcohol free Sunday yesterday. I was
- 29:05Speaker 3: saving the bollinger for when we got north for a
- 29:08Speaker 3: holiday over Christmas.
- 29:09Speaker 2: Love nice up north, not to Mayorka, up north, not
- 29:12Speaker 2: that far north. Now we're coming your way. We're going
- 29:14Speaker 2: to mulum Bimbi. Alexisis lives in mullam Oh nice. All right,
- 29:18Speaker 2: let us know. If I'm not in Tazzi, you can
- 29:20Speaker 2: come over and have some beef with no tomato sauce
- 29:23Speaker 2: on it.
- 29:23Speaker 1: Okay, thanks, You might have to smuggle some in if
- 29:27Speaker 1: you're going to if you want to go in. Not
- 29:29Speaker 1: even the children are allowed to have it anymore at that.
- 29:31Speaker 2: I'm an expert everywhere. No, I've lost that bat and
- 29:35Speaker 2: my son is a tomato sauce aholic. Anyway, that's another
- 29:39Speaker 2: day you've got. You've got it all ahead of you. Hey,
- 29:41Speaker 2: can I just ask Eddie? Was she named after Eddie
- 29:44Speaker 2: from ab fam or is it someone else? No, don't
- 29:46Speaker 2: say that to my wife hates that sound secret.
- 29:50Speaker 3: She's named after my late Nan from Ireland, Edna. He
- 29:54Speaker 3: was affectionately known as Eddie Beautiful. So yeah, she's got
- 29:58Speaker 3: that kind of Irish connection.
- 30:00Speaker 2: I love.
- 30:01Speaker 1: Yah.
- 30:01Speaker 2: Well, we're on a podcast and people can't see this,
- 30:03Speaker 2: but your face does light up when you talk about it,
- 30:05Speaker 2: which is really lovely. But here's something interesting. So you're
- 30:10Speaker 2: you're you're still in that new parent phase. The way
- 30:12Speaker 2: you feel about preseason training is the way I feel
- 30:16Speaker 2: when I see people with babies. Now, I go, I'm
- 30:19Speaker 2: so happy for you and I'm so glad. That's but
- 30:24Speaker 2: it took me about six years after my daughter was
- 30:27Speaker 2: born to get to that point.
- 30:29Speaker 1: I was desperate for another child, but I was a
- 30:30Speaker 1: million years old and but yeah, and one day I
- 30:34Speaker 1: saw someone with a baby and I thought, oh, you're
- 30:37Speaker 1: so tired, aren't you.
- 30:39Speaker 3: You're so it's such hard. That's the other side of preseason.
- 30:42Speaker 3: Everyone's posting in the gym, so tiring. I'm like, you
- 30:45Speaker 3: have no idea.
- 30:47Speaker 2: You have no idea? Training is easy, Yep, totally because
- 30:50Speaker 2: looking after yourself and yourself only and well Joe Harton.
- 30:54Speaker 1: MB Swift's shooting specialist, coach, legend of the game netball.
- 31:00Speaker 1: It has been an absolute delight to have you on
- 31:03Speaker 1: our summer series. I know Catherine's very disappointed that she
- 31:06Speaker 1: couldn't join us, but thank you for balancing out our court.
- 31:10Speaker 1: And yeah, thanks for joining us and we have you
- 31:12Speaker 1: have a wonderful summer.
- 31:13Speaker 2: Thanks, guys an a privilege. Thanks having me on.
- 31:16Speaker 1: That's Joe Harton. I'm Carolyn Swindell.
- 31:18Speaker 2: I'm mis zealous.
- 31:20Speaker 1: Bye see you Dreblers have a good week. Bye.
