- 0:02Speaker 1: Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast, your home for
- 0:06Speaker 1: deer hunting news, stories and strategies, and now your host,
- 0:11Speaker 1: Mark Kenyon. Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast. I'm
- 0:16Speaker 1: your host, Mark Kenyan. In this episode number two D
- 0:19Speaker 1: and forty one and today the show, Dan and I
- 0:21Speaker 1: are breaking down our upcoming hunting plans and strategies, and
- 0:25Speaker 1: then we're answering listener questions on topics such as October
- 0:29Speaker 1: calling strategies, how to hunt in tough wind areas, how
- 0:33Speaker 1: to break down and learn a new hunting property, and
- 0:35Speaker 1: much much more real quick before we get this one started,
- 0:48Speaker 1: want to thank our friends over at Lacrosse Footwear for
- 0:50Speaker 1: their support of this podcast. As I've mentioned this year,
- 0:54Speaker 1: I'm wearing the Alpha Burly pro boots from Lacrosse. They've
- 0:57Speaker 1: been doing great. They are a E high rubber boot.
- 1:01Speaker 1: They keep me sent for you when I'm walking through
- 1:03Speaker 1: the woods because that that rubber holds onto as little
- 1:05Speaker 1: scent as possible. They keep me warm when it's cold. Today,
- 1:09Speaker 1: this big cold front pushing through, It's gonna be in
- 1:10Speaker 1: the forties this afternoon when I'm hunting. That's gonna be
- 1:13Speaker 1: probably the coldest temperatures. Um I've hunted yet this season,
- 1:16Speaker 1: and I know my feet are gonna be completely fine.
- 1:18Speaker 1: My boots have eight grams of fencilate insulation, which keeps
- 1:22Speaker 1: them playing warm. I've warm boots similar to this way
- 1:25Speaker 1: down into the zero below zero temperatures, and as long
- 1:29Speaker 1: as you've had a good wolf sock on, you're gonna
- 1:30Speaker 1: be just fine. But at the same time, I've worn
- 1:33Speaker 1: these boots into the eighties and nineties, and as long
- 1:36Speaker 1: as you have a nice moisture wicking wolf sock on,
- 1:39Speaker 1: that's gonna keep you comfortable even in these warm days too.
- 1:42Speaker 1: So it's a very versatile boot. Can get you a
- 1:44Speaker 1: crossing rivers, it can get you climbing hills, and can
- 1:46Speaker 1: get you climb into a tree. Whatever you need to do.
- 1:49Speaker 1: I've found that this boot works pretty darn well for it.
- 1:52Speaker 1: If you'd like to check out some of the other options,
- 1:54Speaker 1: though the Lacrosse has there might be another version that's
- 1:57Speaker 1: better for you. You can go on over to Lacrosse
- 2:00Speaker 1: footwhere dot com and see what they've got. The last
- 2:03Speaker 1: thing I'll mention is just that the new season of
- 2:06Speaker 1: The Meat Eater TV show is available on Netflix now.
- 2:09Speaker 1: I mentioned it last week. I just want to mention
- 2:11Speaker 1: it one more time. It is a Netflix original. That's
- 2:14Speaker 1: the first time a hunting show has ever been featured
- 2:17Speaker 1: on Netflix in that way, which is a pretty big
- 2:19Speaker 1: deal in something I'm really excited about. So heading on
- 2:22Speaker 1: to Netflix check out the season. It is great. I've
- 2:25Speaker 1: not gotten to watch all of it yet. I've seen
- 2:26Speaker 1: my Caribou episodes and I watched a couple more last night.
- 2:30Speaker 1: I've been really impressed with that. I've been hearing nothing
- 2:32Speaker 1: but good things. So if you haven't checked it out yet,
- 2:34Speaker 1: I do think you will enjoy it. Netflix is where
- 2:37Speaker 1: you'll find it. It is the new season of the
- 2:39Speaker 1: Meat Eater TV show. I hope you guys enjoy that,
- 2:42Speaker 1: and uh look for more to come. I do think
- 2:44Speaker 1: you'll be seeing some more whitetail stuff and yours truly
- 2:48Speaker 1: on some meat either episodes in the future, so keep
- 2:50Speaker 1: an eye out for that too. Now to the show,
- 2:54Speaker 1: all right, Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast, brought
- 2:57Speaker 1: to you by Onyx and today it's just a good
- 3:01Speaker 1: old fashioned Mark and Dan podcast, and uh, I'm pretty
- 3:06Speaker 1: happy about that. What about you, Dan, I'm pretty happy
- 3:09Speaker 1: to mark any time that I can. Just here's what
- 3:14Speaker 1: I'm gonna say my my my wife had to go
- 3:19Speaker 1: out of town for uh for the night, right, and
- 3:25Speaker 1: it is. I'm not complaining about it. I'm not you know,
- 3:29Speaker 1: you know, I don't know complaining about it, I guess.
- 3:31Speaker 1: But she went out of town for the night. So
- 3:33Speaker 1: last night I was in charge of the kids all
- 3:37Speaker 1: by myself. Right, No podcasting stuff was taken care of.
- 3:41Speaker 1: Nothing other than kids was the main focus this morning.
- 3:46Speaker 1: You know, five thirty wake up call, kids are up,
- 3:49Speaker 1: feed them, get them ready for school, you know, get
- 3:52Speaker 1: everything together. And I feel like I need to take
- 3:56Speaker 1: a napp right now. So if my wife ever does
- 3:59Speaker 1: listen into this podcast, kudos to you for doing what
- 4:02Speaker 1: you do. Yeah, man, kudos to you. Um, because I
- 4:07Speaker 1: had my son yesterday all day just myself, and that
- 4:10Speaker 1: was like, oh man, how am I going to get
- 4:13Speaker 1: me work done? How do you accomplish anything when you
- 4:15Speaker 1: have a child with you the whole time? Like, I
- 4:18Speaker 1: don't know how you manage three of them? Um, it's
- 4:22Speaker 1: not easy. Put him to bed. And then that's when
- 4:24Speaker 1: I started working, man, and uh like eleven o'clock at night. Yeah, yeah,
- 4:29Speaker 1: it's it's not no easy chore. Uh. So I'm glad
- 4:34Speaker 1: that they are school or daycare or wherever it is
- 4:37Speaker 1: that they are right now. So you've got a little
- 4:40Speaker 1: time to do this. Um And into your point, you know,
- 4:45Speaker 1: I feel like this time of year especially, you know,
- 4:50Speaker 1: I just needs some Buck talk. Like I I just
- 4:53Speaker 1: when I'm driving on the road or something, I'm just like,
- 4:55Speaker 1: I'm wanting to strategize about stand locations or talk about Bucks.
- 4:58Speaker 1: I got on trail camera or something like that. And
- 4:59Speaker 1: so I end up calling some buddies and they're working
- 5:02Speaker 1: or they're busy doing families stuff, and I'm like, how
- 5:04Speaker 1: come no one's ever available just to talk Bucks to
- 5:07Speaker 1: the So that's what we've got going on right now,
- 5:11Speaker 1: which is a which is a beautiful thing, dan. Um.
- 5:13Speaker 1: So that's what I wanted two things today. I wanted
- 5:16Speaker 1: to talk Bucks, talk dear, talk about what we've got
- 5:19Speaker 1: going on, anything that's happened here recently, what our plans
- 5:22Speaker 1: are coming up. And then I put out a call
- 5:24Speaker 1: last night for questions from listeners and we got just tons,
- 5:28Speaker 1: got hundreds. Um, So there's a lot of good questions
- 5:32Speaker 1: that we can try tackling. Yeah, we're definitely not gonna
- 5:34Speaker 1: cover all of them. But we've got enough to to
- 5:36Speaker 1: talk for hours probably, So that's my game plan. If
- 5:40Speaker 1: that sounds good to you, absolutely, I'm ready. Well, um,
- 5:44Speaker 1: just before we started recording, you started saying like, oh,
- 5:47Speaker 1: I'm so excited because I got this buck. And then
- 5:50Speaker 1: I said, stop, don't tell me anymore, right, do you
- 5:53Speaker 1: want to tell me about that now? Yeah? Okay, So
- 5:55Speaker 1: here's the deal. I don't know about you, but right
- 5:59Speaker 1: when you get your SD cards, you flip through them
- 6:02Speaker 1: as fast as humanly possible, right, I mean that that's me.
- 6:05Speaker 1: And what my computer does is I'll hold down the
- 6:08Speaker 1: button flipping through them, and it skips pictures if I'm
- 6:13Speaker 1: doing it really fast. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. So I went
- 6:16Speaker 1: back uh the other uh this morning actually after the no,
- 6:21Speaker 1: it was early this morning, before the kids even woke up,
- 6:24Speaker 1: flipping through trail trail cameras pictures and lo and behold,
- 6:29Speaker 1: I get three pictures of a buck. Remember that shed
- 6:33Speaker 1: hunting day where I found like nine sheds and forty
- 6:37Speaker 1: minutes nine or ten sheds. Yeah, the big, the biggest
- 6:41Speaker 1: antler I found, um was a buck that I was
- 6:44Speaker 1: kind of hoping I would have ran into last year. Um,
- 6:47Speaker 1: just pictures of him no, no encounters, and he didn't
- 6:52Speaker 1: show up on trail cameras the first you know, the
- 6:54Speaker 1: first two polls, and so I I'm flipping through these
- 6:58Speaker 1: pictures come completely different trail camera early September. Three pictures gone.
- 7:06Speaker 1: And but that tells me he's still alive and that
- 7:10Speaker 1: historical data from last fall may come into play of
- 7:14Speaker 1: where this buck is is at. So I'm excited that
- 7:19Speaker 1: I got you know, I slipped down down and caught
- 7:22Speaker 1: these two pictures on camera against three pictures, and dude,
- 7:26Speaker 1: he he put on a little time length, but a
- 7:29Speaker 1: ton of mass. He's a he's a big nine pointer.
- 7:32Speaker 1: Nice those heavy antler deer're just playing cool. Yeah, And
- 7:38Speaker 1: it's one of those pictures that, Yeah, the velvet's gonna
- 7:41Speaker 1: come off, I would say in the next week or
- 7:45Speaker 1: so of from when where this picture was taken. And
- 7:49Speaker 1: just a ton of mass. And oh man, I'm just
- 7:52Speaker 1: I hope I run into him. I'm putting him at
- 7:54Speaker 1: a five five year old four, maybe a four, but
- 7:59Speaker 1: I'm I'm guess in five. So how many different four
- 8:04Speaker 1: or older bucks? Because four is kind of your your age, right,
- 8:07Speaker 1: You're trying to shoot a four year old or older? Um,
- 8:10Speaker 1: typically at least what what am I trying to say here?
- 8:13Speaker 1: How many different bucks like that? Do you think that
- 8:15Speaker 1: you've got run around? Based on the camera pictures that
- 8:18Speaker 1: you have so far, based off the camera pictures that
- 8:20Speaker 1: I have so far, I probably And I'm gonna I'm
- 8:26Speaker 1: only gonna go back as far as September one, because
- 8:30Speaker 1: I feel that anything before that is kind of just,
- 8:34Speaker 1: I know, just entertainment to get that kind of yeah,
- 8:38Speaker 1: appre shift and we have this shift, right So I'm
- 8:41Speaker 1: gonna say that right now, I have one, two, three,
- 8:50Speaker 1: four five bucks right now on that well, from based
- 8:57Speaker 1: off the last trail camera poll, five bucks that are
- 9:00Speaker 1: four year old or older. Nice, So you got Narlie, Charlie,
- 9:05Speaker 1: you got Dork six. Then I completely forgot about Dork,
- 9:09Speaker 1: so six. So Narlie, Charlie, Dork, You've got this new
- 9:12Speaker 1: buck you just mentioned, You've got, uh that buck you
- 9:17Speaker 1: passed on last year that you saw popping up again? Um,
- 9:22Speaker 1: what are the other two? Anything notable about about the
- 9:24Speaker 1: other two? The other two are one is probably a
- 9:29Speaker 1: mid one forties ten I think he's a four year old,
- 9:32Speaker 1: and then another one is just a gigantic bodied small
- 9:36Speaker 1: I would say like one one thirty class eight pointer,
- 9:41Speaker 1: just kind of a you know, a buck that I
- 9:45Speaker 1: don't know even as an even as a mature buck.
- 9:48Speaker 1: I may I may pass him, you know what I mean,
- 9:52Speaker 1: just not doesn't make my jaw drop, you know, with
- 9:55Speaker 1: all the other stuff that's running around. Yeah, you've got options,
- 9:58Speaker 1: that's for sure. H Well, that sounds like a pretty
- 10:01Speaker 1: good I mean, And that's just what you've got a camera.
- 10:04Speaker 1: I'm sure every year, right, there's a whole bunch of
- 10:07Speaker 1: new bucks that start cruising through. During the run, we
- 10:09Speaker 1: see there's there's two there's two big shifts on my well,
- 10:12Speaker 1: kind of three, but there's the September shift that's a
- 10:15Speaker 1: huge one. And then the crops come out and there's
- 10:18Speaker 1: an adjustment. I wouldn't call it a shift, but an adjustment.
- 10:22Speaker 1: And then somewhere around the October uh time frame is
- 10:30Speaker 1: when I feel that the deer that I'm getting trail
- 10:33Speaker 1: camera pictures of and the deer that I'm seeing from
- 10:36Speaker 1: the tree stand are the deer that I'm going to
- 10:38Speaker 1: be hunting, right, those are the deer that are sticking around.
- 10:42Speaker 1: They're not going to another location. And uh that I
- 10:45Speaker 1: guess that small crop adjustment probably kind of coincides with
- 10:51Speaker 1: the October another October shift, So I don't know. Well, basically,
- 10:56Speaker 1: I'm going hunting this weekend, I'm going hunting next weekend,
- 10:59Speaker 1: and then I should have an idea of what a
- 11:03Speaker 1: really good idea of what's running around on the farm. Yeah,
- 11:06Speaker 1: and how much time do you have budget for your
- 11:07Speaker 1: RUT vacation this year? Two weeks? So you still do
- 11:11Speaker 1: have the two weeks. Nice. I wasn't sure if you
- 11:13Speaker 1: were in a half to half that because of the
- 11:15Speaker 1: Elk trip. Now, that Elk trip was kind of like
- 11:19Speaker 1: my wife's vacation for the Elk trip. That was like
- 11:22Speaker 1: a even trade type of deal, the wine trip. The
- 11:25Speaker 1: wine trip. Yeah, okay, well that was a good deal. Um.
- 11:30Speaker 1: Interesting that you mentioned that you found like some bonus
- 11:32Speaker 1: pictures on your camera that you had missed before, because
- 11:35Speaker 1: I kind of had the same deal happened this past
- 11:36Speaker 1: weekend too, Um, I sort of. I went out this
- 11:41Speaker 1: last Friday, was really rainy day, and I thought this
- 11:44Speaker 1: would be a perfect day to go out there. It
- 11:46Speaker 1: was a good win for the for the Holy Field property,
- 11:48Speaker 1: and with the rain, I thought this is a good
- 11:50Speaker 1: time to go out there on the four wheeler and
- 11:52Speaker 1: check some cameras and hang a couple of new ones.
- 11:55Speaker 1: And I wasn't planning and hunting this spot for a
- 11:57Speaker 1: long time anyway, since I you know, hunted that first
- 12:00Speaker 1: night that didn't work out, so um, so I snuck
- 12:03Speaker 1: in there and pulled two cards and then hung to
- 12:07Speaker 1: new cameras. But one of the new cameras I was
- 12:09Speaker 1: gonna go hang is in the spot that traditionally I
- 12:12Speaker 1: always get pictures of Holy Field, like come September when
- 12:14Speaker 1: he shows up, this is one of the first spots
- 12:16Speaker 1: I start getting pics of him. And I've been kicking
- 12:19Speaker 1: myself because I was just so busy in August running
- 12:22Speaker 1: around like a chicken, my head cut off, try and
- 12:24Speaker 1: get things set up. I never ended up hanging a camera.
- 12:27Speaker 1: They're like I usually do, so this whole time and thinking, man,
- 12:30Speaker 1: if I had a camera there, I probably would have
- 12:31Speaker 1: got pictures of him if he's alive. Um, I just
- 12:34Speaker 1: got to get out there and get this camera up.
- 12:35Speaker 1: So finally Fridays it will do that. So I drive
- 12:38Speaker 1: over this section and I get there and I walk
- 12:40Speaker 1: up to the tree where I usually hang one, and
- 12:43Speaker 1: there's a camera and I'm looking at him like, what, like,
- 12:47Speaker 1: when did I do this? I apparently had hung a
- 12:50Speaker 1: camera on this tree in January and I've not checked
- 12:55Speaker 1: it a single time since. I don't know how that's possible,
- 12:57Speaker 1: because I've walked past it a b jillion times and
- 13:00Speaker 1: shed season. I mean, I drove past it in the
- 13:03Speaker 1: spring turkey hunting, and I just must have assumed like
- 13:07Speaker 1: that I left the camera out and and not turned
- 13:09Speaker 1: it on, and just kept telling myself, I'll grab it later,
- 13:12Speaker 1: I'll grab it later, and then just totally forgot about
- 13:14Speaker 1: it during the summer because I went up and looked
- 13:16Speaker 1: at it, and when I pulled the card and went
- 13:18Speaker 1: and eventually checked it, that sucker had been taking pictures
- 13:21Speaker 1: from January all the way until September, ran that entire
- 13:26Speaker 1: time taking pictures. Um. So that was exciting because all
- 13:29Speaker 1: of a sudden, like, oh man, this camera'sn't run this
- 13:31Speaker 1: whole time. It's in a pretty good spot for summer pictures.
- 13:34Speaker 1: Even so I started checking it, and a whole bunch
- 13:37Speaker 1: of bucks on there during the summer, a bunch of
- 13:39Speaker 1: deer that I did not get on camera anywhere else
- 13:41Speaker 1: that were just showing up here. Um, a lot of
- 13:44Speaker 1: nice two year old maybe a couple of nice three
- 13:46Speaker 1: year old bucks. Um. And then into September some hard
- 13:50Speaker 1: horn deer, but no holy Field. So it was a bonus.
- 13:55Speaker 1: It was a bonus. And that there was, you know,
- 13:57Speaker 1: a bonus, whole bunch of pictures and some better looking buck,
- 14:00Speaker 1: like some deer that will be really nice in a
- 14:01Speaker 1: year or two, um that I wouldn't know where around otherwise,
- 14:04Speaker 1: but no holy Field pictures. There's one picture of a
- 14:09Speaker 1: super big body deer, but he's just enough out of
- 14:12Speaker 1: frame so that his his antlers you can't see his antlers,
- 14:16Speaker 1: but you just see this big body in the back
- 14:17Speaker 1: of like the very back of the antlers almost if
- 14:20Speaker 1: it's very low light. UM that I'd be stretching saying
- 14:24Speaker 1: it was him, but it was enough. I was like, hmmm,
- 14:25Speaker 1: I wish I got a better picture of that one.
- 14:28Speaker 1: UM on the rest of the camera. Same kind of
- 14:31Speaker 1: deal young bucks, but as of now, no for sure
- 14:36Speaker 1: mature buck citing that I can definitively say, oh, this
- 14:39Speaker 1: is Holy fielder, this is this buck or anything. Right now,
- 14:41Speaker 1: it's just a bunch of young bucks. And does um
- 14:46Speaker 1: the next day or let me take back the day
- 14:49Speaker 1: before that actually, did I tell you about this? I
- 14:52Speaker 1: don't think I told about this. UM. The day before
- 14:56Speaker 1: the trail camera day, I went out for an observation
- 15:00Speaker 1: sit and I just went on the ground and sat
- 15:02Speaker 1: on a hillside off the pretty darn close to the road.
- 15:04Speaker 1: Actually just sat inside some standing beans and a slightly
- 15:07Speaker 1: better angle where I could see the front food plot
- 15:10Speaker 1: system on this property. And I could see all the
- 15:12Speaker 1: way down this power line clearing um, so you can
- 15:14Speaker 1: see the whole power line. And then I've got a
- 15:16Speaker 1: second food plot way back there that you could see two.
- 15:18Speaker 1: And I just set the spotting scope up and watched
- 15:21Speaker 1: it all night right, and with like about a half
- 15:24Speaker 1: hour left of daylight, I saw a deer came across
- 15:27Speaker 1: the power line, pulled up the spotting scope, got it
- 15:29Speaker 1: on him and was able to film it with my
- 15:32Speaker 1: little digit scope adapter on my phone right, and it
- 15:36Speaker 1: was a good buck. That was what looked like a
- 15:38Speaker 1: good buck. And in like the second a half clip
- 15:41Speaker 1: I have where he looks my direction and turns his head.
- 15:45Speaker 1: In that one frame where he's looking at the camera,
- 15:49Speaker 1: it looks like holy Field. It's got the right like
- 15:51Speaker 1: the main beams coming up off the head angling out,
- 15:54Speaker 1: curving back in like that all matches up with him. Um.
- 15:57Speaker 1: But it was so fast, and the quality of the
- 15:59Speaker 1: foot of just is so low because of how far
- 16:01Speaker 1: away it is. It's it's too circumstantial. It's safe for sure.
- 16:06Speaker 1: But that was enough to give me like another possible, um, possibility,
- 16:12Speaker 1: that could be him. Yeah, that is it though, That's
- 16:15Speaker 1: all I've got as far as holy Field proof for evidence.
- 16:18Speaker 1: It's it's it's very much like I don't know alright.
- 16:21Speaker 1: So in the in the whole, in this this career
- 16:27Speaker 1: or this storyline that you've had with holy Field, has
- 16:31Speaker 1: he ever disappeared for a while and then returned? So? Yes, yes, um,
- 16:40Speaker 1: so what he's in the first two years he was
- 16:45Speaker 1: like super visible either on camera or in daylight from
- 16:49Speaker 1: the beginning of September through December. In fifteen he was
- 16:52Speaker 1: like that. In sixteen, was like that in two thousands seventeen.
- 16:55Speaker 1: I wasn't seeing him, but I was getting pictures of
- 16:57Speaker 1: him from September on right. But starting with gun season
- 17:02Speaker 1: last year, he disappeared off the map. Man. I did
- 17:05Speaker 1: not see him or get a single picture of him
- 17:08Speaker 1: anywhere from November, but I found a shed in February.
- 17:13Speaker 1: UM So since last fall he's been a camera ghost,
- 17:18Speaker 1: a siting ghost. Um except for one time. My wife
- 17:21Speaker 1: actually drove by a field near this property. I think
- 17:23Speaker 1: I mentioned this last winner, but I didn't. I haven't
- 17:25Speaker 1: been thinking about it recently, but she said that she
- 17:28Speaker 1: thought she saw him standing out in the field in
- 17:30Speaker 1: December last year. UM So that is a possible sighting.
- 17:35Speaker 1: Otherwise he's been pretty much ghost mode. So if if
- 17:40Speaker 1: I guess, what I'm trying to get at is that
- 17:43Speaker 1: he survived long enough to drop his shed that I
- 17:45Speaker 1: found in February, but was not once shown up on
- 17:48Speaker 1: camera from November on. So that makes me think that
- 17:52Speaker 1: it's possible he could be alive and still just be
- 17:55Speaker 1: ghosted on the trail cameras now, because he did that
- 17:57Speaker 1: for a handful of months last fall without me knowing. Right, hypothetically,
- 18:01Speaker 1: it could be possible this year. Maybe he's just is
- 18:03Speaker 1: totally onto like, maybe he's just is to the age
- 18:07Speaker 1: now he is not going to move into these food
- 18:09Speaker 1: plots or fields at all. You know, That's where all
- 18:11Speaker 1: my cameras are pretty much. I've got one camera's back
- 18:13Speaker 1: in the Betting Air that I set in early August
- 18:16Speaker 1: that I'm not going to go in and check until
- 18:18Speaker 1: I hunt back there. Um. So maybe he just is
- 18:22Speaker 1: staying back on this cover. I don't know, Um, but
- 18:25Speaker 1: it sounds like as the rut, you know, as October.
- 18:29Speaker 1: As we go through October, we get to the rut.
- 18:32Speaker 1: It sounds to me like over the years, just like
- 18:35Speaker 1: most dear movement, his pictures increase and his sightings increase. Yeah, definitely.
- 18:40Speaker 1: So the hope is that, you know, if he is alive,
- 18:44Speaker 1: once we get to the end of October, that will
- 18:46Speaker 1: happen and he'll start moving again, or at least moving
- 18:48Speaker 1: somewhere where I'll be able to see him or get
- 18:50Speaker 1: a crack at him. But you know, don't go chasing waterfalls.
- 18:56Speaker 1: Exactly how long do I stay, you know, focused on
- 18:59Speaker 1: this deer that may or may not be around, I
- 19:02Speaker 1: don't know. Um, you don't. Yeah, you just don't know.
- 19:07Speaker 1: So to this point, you know, and like we talked
- 19:08Speaker 1: about last week, I'm just continuing to stay in observation mode.
- 19:11Speaker 1: When I can. I'm gonna sit out there and try
- 19:13Speaker 1: to glasses these fields. Um, I'm gonna check cameras every
- 19:19Speaker 1: I don't know, probably not every week, but two weeks
- 19:23Speaker 1: or I don't know, somewhere between every one to two weeks.
- 19:25Speaker 1: I'll be checking the cameras when wind dictates and when
- 19:29Speaker 1: rain does, and once they cut the beans out of
- 19:32Speaker 1: this property, I'll just start driving the truck back there.
- 19:34Speaker 1: Sometimes I think, again, anytime I can go in the vehicle,
- 19:37Speaker 1: that's gonna make it pretty low impact. Um, and just
- 19:40Speaker 1: keep monitoring and if he shows up, then I'll start
- 19:43Speaker 1: doing something. If not, I will focus on this other spot,
- 19:46Speaker 1: you know, these other two spots I've got to hunt. Um.
- 19:50Speaker 1: So that's that's kind of what I got going on
- 19:52Speaker 1: as far as Holy Field in Michigan hunting and stuff.
- 19:54Speaker 1: I hunted that new property again the other night. Didn't
- 19:57Speaker 1: see much at all. Um, But I am going to
- 20:00Speaker 1: go there tomorrow because there's a big cold front hitting. Dude. Dude,
- 20:06Speaker 1: my two favorite words, right, cold front. Yeah, and it
- 20:11Speaker 1: should be still pretty cold for you by the time
- 20:13Speaker 1: you start on this weekend. Right, I'm going out tomorrow night.
- 20:16Speaker 1: Oh you are right, I got, I got, this is scheduled, right,
- 20:19Speaker 1: So the cold front came through. I haven't I haven't
- 20:22Speaker 1: even been in a tree standard all this year. And
- 20:25Speaker 1: I said to the wife I go cold front coming through.
- 20:28Speaker 1: I haven't hunted this entire season yet, and I'm going
- 20:33Speaker 1: out tomorrow, So the my first sit of the entire
- 20:36Speaker 1: year is going to be eleven days into the season
- 20:39Speaker 1: and I'm looking at the weather right now and we
- 20:41Speaker 1: are literally going to have a twenty degree temperature drop
- 20:46Speaker 1: from the high on Wednesday to the to the high
- 20:52Speaker 1: on Thursday. Dude. The feeling that I get on a
- 20:56Speaker 1: day like that, like when you're when you're taking your
- 20:58Speaker 1: pre hunt shower something that packing up all your stuff.
- 21:01Speaker 1: On those days where the big cold front pushes through
- 21:03Speaker 1: and all the conditions are like on point, I have
- 21:06Speaker 1: this like my stomachs churning. I'm like tingly when you
- 21:10Speaker 1: just feel like this could be it, you know. I
- 21:12Speaker 1: live for that feeling. Yeah, So over the years, I
- 21:17Speaker 1: would get real excited about that. But then there's the
- 21:20Speaker 1: voice in the back of my head that says, listen, man,
- 21:23Speaker 1: you're you're going in and you're gonna be You're gonna hunt.
- 21:27Speaker 1: So you have to make sure that the strategy on
- 21:30Speaker 1: this hunt is on point, because these bucks aren't gonna
- 21:34Speaker 1: be running around the timber chasing does yet. They're gonna
- 21:38Speaker 1: be going from a more than likely going from a
- 21:44Speaker 1: betting area to a food source, and you just have
- 21:47Speaker 1: to try to find someplace from that point A to
- 21:51Speaker 1: point B where they're gonna be cruising and with this
- 21:55Speaker 1: cold front, they're gonna hopefully be on their feet. But
- 21:59Speaker 1: you still have to remember time of year, right, It's
- 22:02Speaker 1: not like it's going to be the rut. Yeah, this
- 22:05Speaker 1: is this is mid October. Things are, like you said,
- 22:08Speaker 1: not like November. Certainly. You know, as we've talked about
- 22:10Speaker 1: many times over the years, there's not a ness. There's
- 22:13Speaker 1: not necessarily any kind of like biological lull. There's things
- 22:17Speaker 1: that are changing that if as a hunter, if you're
- 22:19Speaker 1: able to adapt to those changes, you can still get
- 22:21Speaker 1: into good action this time year, especially if that cold
- 22:23Speaker 1: front happens. But you've got to make sure you are
- 22:26Speaker 1: in the right place, is doing the right things. So
- 22:29Speaker 1: how much rain have you had up in Michigan. It's
- 22:31Speaker 1: been a lot of rain the last week or so. Okay,
- 22:34Speaker 1: so Iowa has had seventeen straight days of rain and
- 22:40Speaker 1: and I think starting this afternoon there's gonna be no
- 22:44Speaker 1: more rain for the next I think three or four days.
- 22:48Speaker 1: So my theory is that these bucks are gonna get up.
- 22:53Speaker 1: They haven't been able to make sign consistently in that
- 22:57Speaker 1: time period. So tomorrow morning, starting tomorrow morning, on their
- 23:01Speaker 1: way back to bed and getting up and going to
- 23:04Speaker 1: the food source tomorrow night, they're gonna start laying sign
- 23:08Speaker 1: and a lot of it, a lot of checking and
- 23:10Speaker 1: freshen up those scrapes, probably right. That's that's my theory anyway. Okay,
- 23:15Speaker 1: so you've got tomorrow evening off, you're hunting this cold
- 23:18Speaker 1: fronts pushing through twenty gree temperature drop. Um. Last week
- 23:23Speaker 1: when we were chatting, you mentioned the fact that, based
- 23:26Speaker 1: off of some historical pictures of Narlie Charlie, you think
- 23:29Speaker 1: you know how to backdoor. Hum, Um, are you going
- 23:33Speaker 1: after Nari Charlie tomorrow? No, not tomorrow. Um. I'm I
- 23:37Speaker 1: don't have the wind I need yet. It's kind of
- 23:40Speaker 1: a northwest wind. I need a straight north wind or
- 23:44Speaker 1: a northeast wind. And I think I'm gonna get that
- 23:48Speaker 1: on Saturday night, which, let me check here, I think, yeah,
- 23:52Speaker 1: I'm gonna I think I'm gonna get that on Saturday night.
- 23:55Speaker 1: So Saturday night is when I'm gonna make a move
- 23:58Speaker 1: in on him. Okay, And Sunday morning. Okay, So let's
- 24:02Speaker 1: let's talk Thursday first, and actually before that, I've been
- 24:06Speaker 1: getting messages and emails from people complaining about you for
- 24:10Speaker 1: not having sharing, for not having shared a picture of
- 24:12Speaker 1: Narlie Charlie yet, I just dude, if it was my own,
- 24:16Speaker 1: if it was my own property, I would, but it's
- 24:18Speaker 1: not and very tight to the vest this year, Yeah,
- 24:23Speaker 1: you have to. Since I've since I've started this podcast
- 24:29Speaker 1: with you and started my own podcast, I feel like
- 24:32Speaker 1: there's been a lot more not only questions about where
- 24:35Speaker 1: do you hunt, but from from local guys, but just
- 24:40Speaker 1: more people making themselves visible on the farms that I hunt,
- 24:45Speaker 1: even though they technically don't have permission to be there.
- 24:48Speaker 1: I don't know even some of the surrounding properties get it.
- 24:52Speaker 1: And I'm I don't know. The thing about it is
- 24:56Speaker 1: there's a there's a chance this buck isn't even on
- 24:59Speaker 1: the property right now, So I don't know. Tough ship, guys,
- 25:06Speaker 1: I can just tell you all listening that it is
- 25:08Speaker 1: a very nice dear. I'll tell you that. Um. Okay,
- 25:13Speaker 1: So Thursday, then, if you're not going after Charlie, what
- 25:16Speaker 1: is the game plan? The game plan on Thursday is
- 25:20Speaker 1: to go to the local farm, right I'm based or
- 25:23Speaker 1: it's a local farm that there's two sections of it,
- 25:28Speaker 1: and there's a really good pinch point on public property
- 25:32Speaker 1: that I access through my private farm, but my tree
- 25:37Speaker 1: stand is gonna be on public property. So it's just
- 25:41Speaker 1: like the public peace is this really long rectangle that
- 25:44Speaker 1: goes straight north off of a road. And if you
- 25:47Speaker 1: want to get in there and you're let's say, if
- 25:50Speaker 1: you have to park at the parking lot for the
- 25:53Speaker 1: public land peace, you gotta walk through the entire property
- 25:56Speaker 1: and you're blowing everything out. So two things are gonna
- 25:59Speaker 1: you know, two things rings. And why I like to
- 26:01Speaker 1: hunt there is if hunters do come in, they bump
- 26:04Speaker 1: deer right to me. Or I'm on a an undisturbed
- 26:09Speaker 1: pinch point on a on a creek that butts up
- 26:12Speaker 1: against this huge field. So these deer are they're really
- 26:16Speaker 1: funneled down into this this crieck system that's in between
- 26:21Speaker 1: two pastures in this field, and it's just a lot
- 26:25Speaker 1: of historically a lot of sign a lot of good
- 26:26Speaker 1: deer movement. I'm gonna be up from that a little
- 26:29Speaker 1: bit tomorrow night. Uh. From on the down, it's gonna
- 26:34Speaker 1: be on the up wind side of a betting area,
- 26:37Speaker 1: but my wind is gonna be if I go too far,
- 26:41Speaker 1: my wind is gonna be blowing into the betting area.
- 26:44Speaker 1: But with this north wind, it's gonna be I'm gonna
- 26:48Speaker 1: be kind of on the corner of it and but
- 26:51Speaker 1: off just a ways so that when the deer start
- 26:56Speaker 1: coming out of this betting area to this um, to
- 27:00Speaker 1: this acorn flat which is kind of a staging area,
- 27:03Speaker 1: and then eventually to what I think is going to
- 27:06Speaker 1: be a food source right now, start starting here pretty
- 27:08Speaker 1: soon in Cornfield, that I'm gonna catch a whole bunch
- 27:13Speaker 1: of traffic coming out of these these two betting areas
- 27:16Speaker 1: that funnel right to me. And that's the goal is
- 27:19Speaker 1: just to watch. My goal is to hopefully watch it,
- 27:21Speaker 1: pray to deer walk by, and just or get my
- 27:25Speaker 1: eyes on something worth shooting. The last two years, man
- 27:28Speaker 1: on this farm really really good one sixty class ten
- 27:32Speaker 1: pointer and uh he he would definitely be a shooter
- 27:36Speaker 1: if I go in and uh have an opportunity at him. Yeah, man,
- 27:41Speaker 1: that's exciting. Um. If a buck comes by, If a
- 27:46Speaker 1: buck that's like definitely a four year old or older
- 27:49Speaker 1: but not like a jaw dropper comes by you on
- 27:52Speaker 1: your very first hunt of the year, and if you
- 27:55Speaker 1: take that buck, right, you only get one archery tag, right,
- 27:58Speaker 1: So that would mean you don't get to take a
- 27:59Speaker 1: sta have a Charlie or Dork or any of these
- 28:01Speaker 1: deer on your main farm. Would you shoot that kind
- 28:04Speaker 1: of four year old tomorrow or no? And I mean
- 28:09Speaker 1: it's just obviously I have options, right, and I don't
- 28:12Speaker 1: want to make myself sound like this giant big buck killer,
- 28:17Speaker 1: but the with what I have on my main farm
- 28:19Speaker 1: and me not even hunting it yet, I will. You know,
- 28:24Speaker 1: last year I passed two deer in the low one
- 28:26Speaker 1: fifties high one forties arena. I would definitely pass that again,
- 28:31Speaker 1: even if it was a four or five year old buck.
- 28:32Speaker 1: I mean, it would have to be pretty special for
- 28:34Speaker 1: me to skip out my entire rut vacation chasing some
- 28:39Speaker 1: world class deer on my other farm. Yeah. Well, you
- 28:43Speaker 1: know how it is in Iowa because I understand that
- 28:45Speaker 1: there's booners behind every tree, every and there's there's I'm
- 28:50Speaker 1: the only hunter in the entire county booners behind every tree.
- 28:55Speaker 1: So just just let them walk man, that's right, dude.
- 28:59Speaker 1: I got like five pictures of people I don't even
- 29:02Speaker 1: have a clue who they are on on my main farm,
- 29:06Speaker 1: just walking around out in the woods, just wearing nine
- 29:09Speaker 1: finger Chronicles T shirts. Yeah right, Oh man? What would
- 29:16Speaker 1: you do if you saw someone that was trespassing in
- 29:18Speaker 1: your property but they're wearing like a nine figure Nations shirt? Um?
- 29:22Speaker 1: Would you be piste or would you be kind of irritated?
- 29:25Speaker 1: But then like, but they're a fan, I let him go.
- 29:27Speaker 1: Oh no way, I'd sell them out. I throw them
- 29:29Speaker 1: right underneath the bus called called d n R. Well
- 29:32Speaker 1: you heard it here. Folks don't cross the line, right,
- 29:39Speaker 1: Oh man? Okay, so Thursday plan going on this new property.
- 29:43Speaker 1: What about the weekend then? Okay, well the weekend is
- 29:48Speaker 1: down at the main farm basically setting up cameras or
- 29:52Speaker 1: checking cameras. I got four more cameras. I need to
- 29:55Speaker 1: hang up and get those in some historically good spots.
- 30:00Speaker 1: I'm gonna be hanging a camera when I go in
- 30:03Speaker 1: on my gnarly Charlie hunt, and I'm trying to think
- 30:08Speaker 1: just I'm gonna hunt Saturday morning. Check all my trail
- 30:13Speaker 1: cameras are all but three of them because the other
- 30:16Speaker 1: three are you know, only only going to check those
- 30:18Speaker 1: when I go in and hunt. But we will see
- 30:22Speaker 1: what they say, and I'll make I'll make a move
- 30:25Speaker 1: off that. If I don't have anything you know, real,
- 30:31Speaker 1: I don't know, substantial on those cameras, then I'll I'll
- 30:34Speaker 1: go in, I'll make a move on Gnarly Charlie, and
- 30:37Speaker 1: I'm gonna leave that tree stand up right there, and
- 30:41Speaker 1: it's going to be there for the season. Then, So
- 30:44Speaker 1: the Saturday morning hunt is not the Gnarly Charlie hunt. Um,
- 30:49Speaker 1: it might it might be, It might be. It just
- 30:54Speaker 1: depends on wind direction. Okay, well we'll tell me this.
- 30:56Speaker 1: I want to understand what your first hunt on Charlie
- 31:00Speaker 1: will look like. So whether it's Saturday morning or Saturday
- 31:02Speaker 1: night or Sunday morning, which every day you get the
- 31:04Speaker 1: right wind, can you like talk through this scenario for me,
- 31:08Speaker 1: Because you mentioned you think you've got this this good
- 31:10Speaker 1: idea of how to get tight to where you think
- 31:12Speaker 1: you might be betted. I'm curious how you're gonna get
- 31:14Speaker 1: in there, what the actual setup is going to be. So,
- 31:17Speaker 1: I mean, it's gonna be an it's gonna be awkward,
- 31:20Speaker 1: I'll put it that way. And the reason I say
- 31:22Speaker 1: that is because I have to you be creative in
- 31:28Speaker 1: my access route, because I have to. I have to
- 31:30Speaker 1: use some a crick to basically just make a huge
- 31:36Speaker 1: loop and come in from a completely different direction, lower terrain,
- 31:42Speaker 1: and then work my way up this. I guess a
- 31:46Speaker 1: small drainage and pop up on a ridge where my
- 31:50Speaker 1: wind is going to be blowing right back down into
- 31:54Speaker 1: the valley. But it's it's gonna be the trail that
- 31:57Speaker 1: I think that these deer are using kind of comes
- 32:00Speaker 1: in from an angle. So it's gonna be one of
- 32:03Speaker 1: those quartering winds, uh, one of those quartering wind scenarios
- 32:07Speaker 1: where if I have a north wind and they're coming up,
- 32:12Speaker 1: if they go too far to the west, they'll bust me,
- 32:15Speaker 1: but the trail in the terrain kind of pinches him.
- 32:19Speaker 1: All two, stay to the east of where my stand
- 32:22Speaker 1: is gonna be and and I should be able to
- 32:25Speaker 1: get a good view of the valley below. So that's
- 32:30Speaker 1: that's just kind of how it is. Okay, Now, are
- 32:33Speaker 1: you gonna like when if you go in there? Are
- 32:35Speaker 1: you gonna hang a camera somewhere around there when you
- 32:37Speaker 1: go win? So that you can try to better understand
- 32:39Speaker 1: if he isn't there or anything that absolutely absolutely and
- 32:43Speaker 1: I'll let that soak. That might be one of the
- 32:45Speaker 1: cameras that I only check when I hunt that area.
- 32:49Speaker 1: Um and I don't even use that data until next year,
- 32:53Speaker 1: you know what I mean? So based off of your
- 32:58Speaker 1: hunch you have here and that intel from last year,
- 33:01Speaker 1: and the conditions we have this weekend, yeah, unlike, uh,
- 33:06Speaker 1: if we're gonna do like the Spencer new hard thing here,
- 33:08Speaker 1: like on a one to ten scale, how would you
- 33:11Speaker 1: rank like your optimism as far as like chances of
- 33:14Speaker 1: of a mature buck encounter or shot this weekend like
- 33:18Speaker 1: these next three days. I mean, my optimism is that
- 33:20Speaker 1: an all time high, But that doesn't translate into you
- 33:24Speaker 1: know what I mean, That doesn't translate into anything really.
- 33:27Speaker 1: I mean, I feel that if I play my cards right,
- 33:31Speaker 1: I will run into something what particular, dear, I don't know,
- 33:35Speaker 1: but it's a good betting area, um, and it's in
- 33:39Speaker 1: where I'm going to be setting. Is in between a
- 33:41Speaker 1: good betting area and a really good food source. On
- 33:45Speaker 1: another kind of staging area that's an oak flat before
- 33:48Speaker 1: it gets to a crop field. And I tell you man,
- 33:51Speaker 1: if I do it right, I'm I'm confident I'll see something.
- 33:56Speaker 1: But you know who knows what bucket is. These deer
- 33:59Speaker 1: aren't like on my farms and the country that I
- 34:04Speaker 1: hunt in. It's not like what you what you read
- 34:08Speaker 1: about on let's say like Dan Infult, where he hunts
- 34:10Speaker 1: specific buckbeds over and over and over again. These deer
- 34:15Speaker 1: don't have specific beds and they will they will go
- 34:20Speaker 1: to an area and find whatever they're most comfortable with. Now,
- 34:25Speaker 1: this area could be two three four acres or it
- 34:28Speaker 1: could be like my farm, which there's several different ridges
- 34:32Speaker 1: and it just depends on how far they want to walk.
- 34:34Speaker 1: Almost it's not like they're going back to the same
- 34:37Speaker 1: bedding area every single day because the wind is different
- 34:40Speaker 1: every single day. Interesting um hm I. And that's why
- 34:49Speaker 1: I to the listeners of this podcast is a lot
- 34:53Speaker 1: of people try to take um strategy away from someone
- 34:59Speaker 1: else who's been really successful. And I'm not trying to
- 35:01Speaker 1: take anything away from those people. But the deer are
- 35:05Speaker 1: not doing the same exact thing on your property that
- 35:08Speaker 1: they're doing on my property. Right, you have to be
- 35:11Speaker 1: able to take away principles and use those principles I can't.
- 35:17Speaker 1: I'm not gonna sit here Mark and tell you how
- 35:19Speaker 1: to hunt. I might be able to throw some ideas
- 35:21Speaker 1: your way, and I don't think that you're gonna be
- 35:23Speaker 1: able to give me advice on how to hunt my
- 35:26Speaker 1: property specifically, I mean specifically, right, we can take we
- 35:30Speaker 1: can give each other some ideas, but man, the deer
- 35:34Speaker 1: on my farm are not doing what the deer, let's say,
- 35:38Speaker 1: in Wisconsin Marshland are doing, or or South Dakota, you
- 35:43Speaker 1: know where there's no trees. You know what I mean.
- 35:45Speaker 1: Everybody has to has to use their brain. Yeah, it's
- 35:49Speaker 1: kind of the trust and verify kind of deal. We're
- 35:51Speaker 1: taking these ideas trust that works for these people in
- 35:55Speaker 1: their situations. But then you need to see, okay, can
- 35:58Speaker 1: this be applied to my situations so substances, you need
- 36:00Speaker 1: to verify that by way of observation, trial and error, um,
- 36:05Speaker 1: and all that kind of stuff that, like you said,
- 36:07Speaker 1: that applies to anything that you say, or I say,
- 36:09Speaker 1: or any of our guests say. Um, but but that
- 36:14Speaker 1: is I guess, um, yeah, I guess that just kind
- 36:17Speaker 1: of applies to everything. So I mean you can take away,
- 36:20Speaker 1: for example, if I said, Mark, you need to get
- 36:22Speaker 1: down winto that betting area. That's that's a very generalized statement.
- 36:27Speaker 1: That is always good for hunting a buck during the rut. Right,
- 36:31Speaker 1: get down wind of that betting area. Right, anybody can
- 36:34Speaker 1: take take that away. But I don't know if that
- 36:38Speaker 1: betting area is on a river bottom or if that
- 36:41Speaker 1: is on a ridge or where if it's Yeah, you
- 36:48Speaker 1: know this is true. This is an important thing to
- 36:50Speaker 1: to to kind of qualify anything we talked about. So, um, yeah,
- 36:56Speaker 1: so I want to pivot a little bit. Damn, unless
- 36:59Speaker 1: you've got any other major updates on your hunts. No, no, no, no,
- 37:02Speaker 1: But my question is, and I know you kind of
- 37:06Speaker 1: roughly when or you know, very high level went over it,
- 37:09Speaker 1: But I mean, what is what is your strategy on
- 37:13Speaker 1: your Michigan farm from kind of on a macro level?
- 37:16Speaker 1: I mean, are you are you just gonna sit back
- 37:19Speaker 1: and and wait or are you gonna be aggressive on
- 37:23Speaker 1: some of these other I know, I know you mentioned
- 37:26Speaker 1: you were going to kind of just wait on your
- 37:28Speaker 1: your local or your your property and then go hunt
- 37:33Speaker 1: this other property. But are you making any type of
- 37:36Speaker 1: big moves with this cold front coming through? Yeah? So
- 37:39Speaker 1: to your first point, the macro strategy on like, there's
- 37:43Speaker 1: there's three properties that I've got to hunt in Michigan. Basically,
- 37:45Speaker 1: they've got a bunch of other kind of a handful
- 37:47Speaker 1: of other small spots I can hunt here and there,
- 37:49Speaker 1: but i have three kind of main quality options. I've
- 37:52Speaker 1: got the holy Field Farm, i have this new big
- 37:56Speaker 1: permission property that's on the west side of the state.
- 37:58Speaker 1: And then I've got our northern mission again deer camp
- 38:00Speaker 1: up there. So my holy Field strategy, as I kind
- 38:05Speaker 1: of mentioned earlier, is to basically check cameras and on
- 38:10Speaker 1: nights when I can swing it, drive out to this
- 38:12Speaker 1: area and observe the fields and down the power line
- 38:15Speaker 1: of stuff and try to see is holy Field alive?
- 38:18Speaker 1: Is he moving? Otherwise I'm staying out of there completely
- 38:21Speaker 1: until around Halloween. Once Halloween hits, then I'm going to
- 38:25Speaker 1: hunt it hard, assuming that I think holy Fields alive
- 38:29Speaker 1: at that point. So probably from the thirty one through
- 38:32Speaker 1: the seventh of November, I've got kind of budget to
- 38:35Speaker 1: hunt every day on that property, and I'm going to
- 38:38Speaker 1: be focusing on these betting area spots that I've set
- 38:41Speaker 1: up over the last two years where I had my
- 38:44Speaker 1: close calls of holy Field last year, and a bunch
- 38:46Speaker 1: of other bucks you know should have shot him last year,
- 38:48Speaker 1: and one of these stands. This summer, I went in
- 38:50Speaker 1: there and prepped and fixed up three new locations back
- 38:53Speaker 1: there that in past years I never used to hunt
- 38:55Speaker 1: back there, and then two years ago I all of
- 38:58Speaker 1: a sudden discovered, Oh, you're an idiot, Mark, you should
- 39:01Speaker 1: have been hunting here during the run. This is where
- 39:02Speaker 1: it's really happening. So that's my game plan for that
- 39:06Speaker 1: first week in November is to hunt that back area.
- 39:09Speaker 1: If holy Fields alive, I think that's gonna be where
- 39:11Speaker 1: I'll get a shot him. And then on the seventh
- 39:15Speaker 1: and November, I'm going to the other property and uh,
- 39:20Speaker 1: the Meat Eater crew, Ronnella and those guys are coming
- 39:22Speaker 1: down and hunting that property with me for a week,
- 39:25Speaker 1: um and we're gonna be filming that first show. So
- 39:29Speaker 1: that's the first two weeks in November, one week after
- 39:32Speaker 1: holy Field, one week on this new property, and then
- 39:34Speaker 1: after that going up to my Northern Michigan deer camp
- 39:37Speaker 1: for the gun season trip that I always do. That's
- 39:40Speaker 1: what November looks like. Um, So up between now and
- 39:43Speaker 1: then though, between now and that October ish time frame.
- 39:47Speaker 1: W I wanna start hunting holy Field. I'm kind of
- 39:49Speaker 1: just doing a little bit of bouncing around. I'm uh
- 39:53Speaker 1: doing the observation as I mentioned for the holy Field property.
- 39:55Speaker 1: On the days that look good where I think I
- 39:57Speaker 1: definitely should be hunting, I'm gonna be going to the
- 39:59Speaker 1: new property and kind of dabbling there. I don't necessarily
- 40:04Speaker 1: want to push into the very best stuff. Um I
- 40:06Speaker 1: feel like there's enough kind of safer locations that I
- 40:09Speaker 1: can get into just to learn, you know. I'm just
- 40:12Speaker 1: it's a big property, it's a new property, um So,
- 40:15Speaker 1: I just want to kind of learn it, observe, see
- 40:17Speaker 1: what the ebbs and flows are of this area. Um
- 40:21Speaker 1: But when I like this cold front hunting or this
- 40:23Speaker 1: cold front coming this week, I'm gonna go to that
- 40:25Speaker 1: new property and a hunt one of the better sections
- 40:28Speaker 1: on one of these little food sources tied to a
- 40:30Speaker 1: betting air that I can sneak into. Um So, I'm
- 40:33Speaker 1: gonna be doing that kind of thing. And then a
- 40:35Speaker 1: day here and there going up to the Northern Michigan
- 40:37Speaker 1: property just again get a couple of hunts in their
- 40:40Speaker 1: check cameras see what's going on. Um So, I'm not
- 40:44Speaker 1: really swinging for any fences yet. Between now and then,
- 40:47Speaker 1: it's basically gonna be learn the new property, observe the
- 40:51Speaker 1: Holy Field property, get some hunts in, UM, want to
- 40:55Speaker 1: hit some public land stuff. Furter is gonna come down
- 40:57Speaker 1: next week. We're gonna do a little bit of public
- 40:58Speaker 1: land and running gunning. We're gonna go up to the
- 41:00Speaker 1: deer camp in northern Michigan for a day and a
- 41:02Speaker 1: half do some stuff up there. UM. But this brings
- 41:07Speaker 1: me to another kind of thing I need to talk about,
- 41:11Speaker 1: which is kind of my first UM encounter with the
- 41:19Speaker 1: well not my first encounter, but you know, we talked
- 41:21Speaker 1: about before I had kids, before I had eight son um,
- 41:24Speaker 1: how that's going to impact my hunting, and how it's
- 41:26Speaker 1: going to impact my ability to travel and all these
- 41:28Speaker 1: kinds of things. And I knew it impact things. I
- 41:30Speaker 1: knew would make things more difficult, but I wasn't exactly
- 41:32Speaker 1: sure how I was going to rack to that. How
- 41:34Speaker 1: my plans have changed because of that. UM. So now
- 41:38Speaker 1: something is changing because of that UM. As we've talked about.
- 41:42Speaker 1: In September, I was gone a ton I was gone,
- 41:45Speaker 1: and even in August, right I was gone for a
- 41:48Speaker 1: week and a half in August on some um, non
- 41:51Speaker 1: hunting but other kind of work related trips. Then September
- 41:54Speaker 1: I was gone. I think it was twenty days out
- 41:56Speaker 1: of the thirty days in September I was gone. And
- 42:00Speaker 1: then in October I had planned this like nine or
- 42:03Speaker 1: ten day trip to the Boundary Waters to Minnesota. That
- 42:06Speaker 1: I had a five or six day trip to Nebraska. UM,
- 42:09Speaker 1: and then the rut starts right then, and then it's
- 42:12Speaker 1: you know, three weeks NonStop between them doing all those
- 42:14Speaker 1: things I just told you about. So I got home
- 42:17Speaker 1: from Montana and I'm looking at my calendar. I'm like,
- 42:19Speaker 1: holy smokes, my wife's been by herself basically for almost
- 42:22Speaker 1: three basically three weeks. I'm gonna be home for seven
- 42:25Speaker 1: days and then take off again for this Boundary Waters hunt. Um. Meanwhile,
- 42:30Speaker 1: she's trying to work because she works from home, so
- 42:33Speaker 1: she's supposed to be doing work while she's at home,
- 42:35Speaker 1: but she's taking care of our our baby the whole time. UM.
- 42:41Speaker 1: So that over the past week or when I got
- 42:42Speaker 1: back from Montana, I started thinking about this, and I'm like,
- 42:44Speaker 1: how can I possibly take off again for another ten
- 42:48Speaker 1: days or whatever it might be after just being home
- 42:51Speaker 1: barely at all and not seeing my son hardly ever,
- 42:54Speaker 1: and not really contributing as a member of the household.
- 42:57Speaker 1: UM So, I have decided to postpone the Minnesota Boundary
- 43:04Speaker 1: Waters hunt to the next year. I just don't see
- 43:08Speaker 1: how I could possibly leave for ten days right now
- 43:11Speaker 1: and then be home for four and then go on this,
- 43:14Speaker 1: you know, three and a half weeks of different rut
- 43:16Speaker 1: obligations I have. Um. I just there's just no way
- 43:20Speaker 1: I could do that and still have a wife and
- 43:22Speaker 1: son when I get back home. Um and just you know,
- 43:26Speaker 1: put my wife in such a tough position. So it's
- 43:29Speaker 1: a it's a huge bummer because it's a trip that
- 43:30Speaker 1: I was really excited about. It's something we've talked to
- 43:32Speaker 1: a good amount of people are really interested in it,
- 43:35Speaker 1: um And I wanted to help bring attention to the
- 43:37Speaker 1: Boundary Waters area and some of the things going on
- 43:39Speaker 1: right now and the threats is facing. Um So, I'm
- 43:43Speaker 1: really disappointed that I have to do this, and I
- 43:45Speaker 1: feel bad about it. Um But it's one of those
- 43:48Speaker 1: things I think as a father, this is one of
- 43:50Speaker 1: those things where, yeah, this is my job, but also
- 43:52Speaker 1: I still need to find ways to balance it in
- 43:54Speaker 1: the right way. Um, And I feel like this is
- 43:57Speaker 1: one of those things I had to do in order
- 43:58Speaker 1: to to prioritize family in somewhere. You know, absolutely, man,
- 44:03Speaker 1: And you know what, I've talked with some of these
- 44:06Speaker 1: other guys who are quote unquote in the industry similar
- 44:09Speaker 1: to yourself. And although you don't produce a television show,
- 44:14Speaker 1: these guys they are gone for over two hundred days
- 44:20Speaker 1: a year if not more, going on hunts, producing their
- 44:25Speaker 1: television shows. And they have kids, wives and kids at home, right.
- 44:29Speaker 1: So it's like one of those things where I think
- 44:32Speaker 1: a lot of people who say, hey, I want to
- 44:35Speaker 1: get into the hunting hunting industry, they don't understand that
- 44:39Speaker 1: if you know, yeah, going on all these hunts would
- 44:42Speaker 1: be completely awesome. However, there there's a lot of sacrifice
- 44:47Speaker 1: that's that has to be made as well. Oh yeah, yeah,
- 44:50Speaker 1: it's not not easy, and I'm not I'm not traveling
- 44:53Speaker 1: that much, but I travel certainly is ramping up with
- 44:56Speaker 1: all the new stuff going on these days, and that's
- 44:58Speaker 1: something I know I'm going to be increasingly you know,
- 45:00Speaker 1: trying to deal with in balance. So um, yeah, so
- 45:05Speaker 1: that's that's what's going on, So I'm not doing that hunt.
- 45:07Speaker 1: So because of that, I'm gonna be around though all
- 45:09Speaker 1: the way until the October, which is nice to be
- 45:12Speaker 1: able to be home for almost a month straight, um,
- 45:15Speaker 1: and then just doing those things I mentioned, Gonna bounce
- 45:17Speaker 1: between the new property, northern property, observe holy Field property,
- 45:22Speaker 1: and get some quality family time. And I don't think
- 45:24Speaker 1: I'm gonna hunt this weekend or the next weekend. I'm
- 45:27Speaker 1: actually gonna take those weekends off and just spend time
- 45:29Speaker 1: with the family, try to do some things around the house,
- 45:32Speaker 1: just try to cross my teas and dot my eyes
- 45:35Speaker 1: and try to make sure everything is just good at
- 45:37Speaker 1: places that can be before before late October shows up. Um.
- 45:42Speaker 1: But but I do, and I will be still wanting
- 45:45Speaker 1: to talk about the Boundary Waters area, um, so on
- 45:48Speaker 1: some future podcasts and some social media content. I still
- 45:51Speaker 1: want to talk about what's happening there because, as we
- 45:54Speaker 1: mentioned on this podcast way back in February, when I
- 45:56Speaker 1: originally brought up the idea of doing this hunt, the
- 46:00Speaker 1: this is this really special place. It's incredible wilderness area
- 46:02Speaker 1: in northern Minnesota. All these lakes and rivers and big woods,
- 46:06Speaker 1: timber and and deer and moose and wolves and tons
- 46:09Speaker 1: of walleye and pike and just incredible area. Um it's
- 46:13Speaker 1: the most visited wilderness area actually in the United States.
- 46:17Speaker 1: And there are these two minds being proposed right on
- 46:21Speaker 1: the border of this wilderness area that the water systems there,
- 46:25Speaker 1: if there's any pollution or leakage from those mines, is
- 46:27Speaker 1: going to go right into this incredible wild place. And
- 46:31Speaker 1: there's been this big battle over the past couple of
- 46:32Speaker 1: years about getting these leases approved, and just recently here
- 46:37Speaker 1: the the Interior Department has approved as as is allowing
- 46:42Speaker 1: this process to move forward. Now. Um, so it's a
- 46:45Speaker 1: it's bad news on that front. It's really bad news
- 46:47Speaker 1: on that front. Um. So I'm gonna try to get
- 46:49Speaker 1: some more information about that out there to the wire
- 46:51Speaker 1: Town audience. If you've been kind of following that, I
- 46:54Speaker 1: want to make sure you're you're up to day and
- 46:56Speaker 1: what's happening and how you know you might be able
- 46:58Speaker 1: to make your voice heard because I am going to
- 47:01Speaker 1: go do this hunt next year. It seems like an
- 47:02Speaker 1: absolutely amazing place and uh and I want to make
- 47:05Speaker 1: sure and I think we we all should try to
- 47:07Speaker 1: make sure the places like that and experiences like that.
- 47:10Speaker 1: You know, we're still available, um for for your kids,
- 47:13Speaker 1: Dan or my kids. Um for They're still to be clean,
- 47:17Speaker 1: pristine wild places to go, you know, experience the wilderness.
- 47:23Speaker 1: So that's that's my story in the bound Waters. More
- 47:27Speaker 1: to come. That's a big deal. Yeah, it is. Um
- 47:31Speaker 1: So hopefully we can still raise a little awareness around it,
- 47:33Speaker 1: and then next year leading up to that hunt, I'm
- 47:36Speaker 1: sure there'll be lots to talk about. UM. Check this out. October,
- 47:43Speaker 1: I am going to my very first ever back Country
- 47:47Speaker 1: Hunters and Anglers pint Night in Iowa. St We are
- 47:51Speaker 1: starting a a chapter in Iowa. That is awesome. Dude,
- 47:55Speaker 1: I'm glad you're gonna be at that. It's a great organization, yep.
- 47:59Speaker 1: So I'm pumped that a lot of other guys like
- 48:03Speaker 1: myself have put interest into into that and uh we
- 48:08Speaker 1: are We've all I mean, we've already had some pint
- 48:11Speaker 1: nights in some other towns, which is great. Um. I
- 48:15Speaker 1: haven't been involved in in that section of it, but
- 48:18Speaker 1: I know this one's gonna be local and I will
- 48:21Speaker 1: be attending it. So I'm pretty punked for that sweet
- 48:23Speaker 1: October eighteenth. Where's it? Uh in Iowa City. Well, it's
- 48:28Speaker 1: not in Iowa City. It's in a town called Coralville,
- 48:30Speaker 1: just north of Iowa City, at a bar called guss Is.
- 48:33Speaker 1: All right, Gus is October eighteen in Coralville. What time?
- 48:38Speaker 1: I think it starts at six o'clock six or seven? Sweet. Well,
- 48:43Speaker 1: if you're a listener going out to the pinte in Iowa, um,
- 48:47Speaker 1: that's that'll be cool. Event I've not been able to
- 48:50Speaker 1: be to the pint night here in the last couple
- 48:51Speaker 1: of months, but they are always a good time and
- 48:53Speaker 1: a great way to get some like mine hunters and
- 48:55Speaker 1: anglers together. So on that point, we have many, many questions. Yeah,
- 49:03Speaker 1: we got to pivot to the questions because we've got
- 49:05Speaker 1: a little over half hour left to tackle about two
- 49:08Speaker 1: thousand questions quickly. Though, before we move on to our
- 49:12Speaker 1: Q and A section, let's take a second here to
- 49:14Speaker 1: thank our partners at White Tailed Properties. This week with
- 49:18Speaker 1: White Tailed Properties, we are joined by Neil Hogger, a
- 49:21Speaker 1: land specialist out of Wisconsin, and Neil is going to
- 49:24Speaker 1: be talking to us about how the shopping process is
- 49:26Speaker 1: different in areas that are famous for big deer. Well,
- 49:31Speaker 1: Buffalo County is a nationally known county obviously, Um, a
- 49:36Speaker 1: lot of the land there that comes on the market
- 49:39Speaker 1: and sold really never make its makes it to the market.
- 49:42Speaker 1: So that's a major difference. So it kind of like
- 49:44Speaker 1: Polk in Wisconsin. It's a top ten Pope and Young
- 49:47Speaker 1: County excellent hunting, but it just doesn't have the notoriety
- 49:52Speaker 1: that Buffalo County ass So to find property in Buffalo County,
- 49:56Speaker 1: I think the approach needs to be you've got to
- 49:58Speaker 1: get us close to the center of influences. You can
- 50:00Speaker 1: working with an agent like myself with white tailed properties. Uh,
- 50:04Speaker 1: you know, we're moving and shaking in these counties all
- 50:06Speaker 1: the time. We're constantly talking to people or people are
- 50:08Speaker 1: approaching us. So if you're looking for quality land, I
- 50:11Speaker 1: think you've got to get to the center of influence.
- 50:13Speaker 1: And that's a guy like me um and kind of
- 50:16Speaker 1: like Polk, which is, you know, just as good hunting.
- 50:19Speaker 1: You could you could search some typical avenues of of
- 50:22Speaker 1: white tail properties, real estate websites, land Watch, type prop
- 50:26Speaker 1: property real estate websites, Zillo even, and you can find
- 50:30Speaker 1: property there um just as easy. But in an area
- 50:34Speaker 1: like that, and probably for a buffaloot too, I'd say
- 50:36Speaker 1: get to a guy that is selling land. You want
- 50:39Speaker 1: to land specialists, not necessarily a residential real estate agent,
- 50:43Speaker 1: because they'll have the insights that you need. If you'd
- 50:47Speaker 1: like to learn more and to see the properties that
- 50:49Speaker 1: Neil currently has listed for sale, visit white tail properties
- 50:53Speaker 1: dot com. Backslash Hogger. It's h A U G E
- 50:57Speaker 1: R so. So I wrote an intro intro music for
- 51:02Speaker 1: this portion of the podcast. Whenever you're ready, just tell me. Okay,
- 51:06Speaker 1: I'm ready. All right, Q and A, Q and A
- 51:14Speaker 1: time for Dana Mark two answer some IM Q and A.
- 51:17Speaker 1: All Right, there we go, ladies and gentlemen, it's time
- 51:21Speaker 1: for some Q and A. Here's your host, Mark Kenyan.
- 51:24Speaker 1: All right, So we're going to have to do this
- 51:25Speaker 1: as a recurring segment, and every time you need to
- 51:28Speaker 1: do that music, it might be different. It might be
- 51:31Speaker 1: different every time. Oh, I think it's terrific. Alright. So
- 51:36Speaker 1: the first question of the day is and I didn't
- 51:40Speaker 1: take the people's names. I just copy of the questions
- 51:42Speaker 1: and just listen for your question. But here's a question.
- 51:46Speaker 1: I've heard you guys joke about the acorn crunch before.
- 51:49Speaker 1: What exactly was it? I'll take this one Mark, Yeah,
- 51:56Speaker 1: take this one real quick, Dan, long story short. It
- 52:00Speaker 1: was two two leader bottle you know, like what you
- 52:05Speaker 1: would get bottles of pop in right though, the two
- 52:07Speaker 1: Leader containers of pop. Those two lids right the screw
- 52:11Speaker 1: on lids with all these cuts in them, a little
- 52:14Speaker 1: spring in between, and you just would scrunch those back
- 52:19Speaker 1: and forth in your hand. And it was supposed to
- 52:22Speaker 1: replicate the sound of a deer eating an acorn, which
- 52:26Speaker 1: would cause other deer to come in to that sound.
- 52:31Speaker 1: There you go, the acorn cruncher, acorn cruncher. And it is,
- 52:35Speaker 1: you know, kind of comical idea, but hey, maybe work
- 52:41Speaker 1: for someone. I don't know. There's probably one guy out
- 52:43Speaker 1: there who shot a just a h a giant like
- 52:46Speaker 1: booner using that, and he probably has that in his
- 52:50Speaker 1: bag of tricks every single year. If that person is listening,
- 52:55Speaker 1: please reach out to us. I would like to I'd
- 52:59Speaker 1: like to hear that story. Um okay, next question, how
- 53:03Speaker 1: often do you use a grunt tube in October or
- 53:06Speaker 1: not at all? Is it just a waiting game? Go
- 53:11Speaker 1: for it? Mark? All right, So for me in October,
- 53:16Speaker 1: the only time I'm using the grunt to this month
- 53:19Speaker 1: is just maybe as like a light kind of contact
- 53:21Speaker 1: grunt looking for a little bit of curiosity, at least
- 53:25Speaker 1: in the early parts of the month. So you know,
- 53:27Speaker 1: if I'm in the tree right now, if I see
- 53:29Speaker 1: a buck that's out of range, um, I might just
- 53:32Speaker 1: do a light once or twice, just to see if
- 53:35Speaker 1: I might be getting curious and maybe come in. But
- 53:38Speaker 1: I'm not doing it aggressively, and I'm not blind calling,
- 53:41Speaker 1: you know, So that by that I mean I'm not
- 53:42Speaker 1: just sitting there not seeing any deer, but doing a
- 53:44Speaker 1: bunch of grunting hoping to catch something's attention. Often the distance. Um,
- 53:49Speaker 1: as you get into late October once it definitely feels
- 53:52Speaker 1: like that rut is ramping up that pre ride activity.
- 53:55Speaker 1: Once you're seeing bucks getting aggressive with each other, maybe
- 53:58Speaker 1: some sparring or um, you know, different things like that
- 54:02Speaker 1: going on, maybe a little bit chasing even the beginning
- 54:04Speaker 1: at that first dough and estris popped in the last
- 54:06Speaker 1: couple of days of October. At that point, then I
- 54:09Speaker 1: will use a grunt too much more as I would
- 54:12Speaker 1: in November, which is, you know, if I see again.
- 54:16Speaker 1: I don't like to do a lot blind calling really ever,
- 54:18Speaker 1: but if I see a buck a shooter buck out
- 54:20Speaker 1: of range, I typically start with a contact grunt of
- 54:24Speaker 1: some kind try to get his attention. If that doesn't work,
- 54:27Speaker 1: I'll get a little more aggressive and do a little
- 54:28Speaker 1: more like a roar. If that doesn't do it, the
- 54:33Speaker 1: last thing I would try it would be a snort weeze,
- 54:36Speaker 1: which is that kind of sound which is like this
- 54:42Speaker 1: really aggressive, like hey man, I'm gonna kick your ass.
- 54:45Speaker 1: Is basically what's the what a deer says when he
- 54:47Speaker 1: makes a snort we's and that's very aggressive. I would
- 54:49Speaker 1: only use that during that time period where bucks are
- 54:51Speaker 1: you know, it's you know, sizing each other up and
- 54:54Speaker 1: duking it out over ladies. Um. So that's kind of
- 54:57Speaker 1: my grunt call progression that I'm using during that kind
- 55:00Speaker 1: of pre rut to rut phase. Um. The only other
- 55:03Speaker 1: thing I'd say about grunting is that if you do
- 55:06Speaker 1: one of those things and the buck reacts positively and
- 55:10Speaker 1: starts coming into you, don't do any other calling. Once
- 55:13Speaker 1: you get the reaction you want, I would stop calling
- 55:15Speaker 1: and just let him come. And then on the other side,
- 55:18Speaker 1: if he reacts like really negatively, let's say I do
- 55:21Speaker 1: that snort weez and he tucks his tail and like
- 55:24Speaker 1: starts slinking away or bounds away. That's saying like, hey,
- 55:28Speaker 1: he doesn't like that, don't keep calling stuff. You're just
- 55:31Speaker 1: gonna make the situation worse. I think at that point
- 55:33Speaker 1: then I just quiet down and let him go his
- 55:34Speaker 1: way and just kind of realize, Okay, it's not happening. Um,
- 55:38Speaker 1: that is my quick take on it. What do you think, Dan?
- 55:41Speaker 1: Pretty much the exact same man. I don't even bring
- 55:44Speaker 1: my rattling antlers in the tree with me until you know,
- 55:48Speaker 1: late October. Uh, the grunt tube is always with me.
- 55:53Speaker 1: And this time of year, let's just say for this weekend,
- 55:56Speaker 1: for example, something comes out of range and it's within
- 56:00Speaker 1: my window of wind, so to speak. Um, just one bra.
- 56:06Speaker 1: If he doesn't hear me, bra bra, and then that
- 56:10Speaker 1: should get his attention. And if it doesn't, I wait
- 56:14Speaker 1: for him to acknowledge it or just keep on moving,
- 56:16Speaker 1: because sometimes they'll hear it and they don't care, and
- 56:19Speaker 1: then other times they'll they'll look over. And then once
- 56:23Speaker 1: they look over, like you said, no more calling, that
- 56:26Speaker 1: will bite you in the butt. Yeah, yeah, all right,
- 56:30Speaker 1: so we are we're on the same page of that.
- 56:32Speaker 1: From how about this one. How do you hunt a
- 56:36Speaker 1: buck that only shows up on trail camera in the
- 56:38Speaker 1: middle of the night. Okay, so you got two options here, right.
- 56:45Speaker 1: This happens a lot for guys who have their trail
- 56:48Speaker 1: trail cameras on field edges. Right, you don't, I mean
- 56:51Speaker 1: you check your trail camera and you're like, oh man,
- 56:53Speaker 1: it's you know, it's it's ten o'clock at night. I
- 56:55Speaker 1: can't you know? How do I How do I know
- 56:57Speaker 1: where this deer is coming from? Look at look at
- 56:59Speaker 1: your map, Look at the top of study that trail
- 57:02Speaker 1: camera picture to where this deer is entering. Is he
- 57:05Speaker 1: entering from the left, Well, maybe he's coming on the
- 57:07Speaker 1: left side of the ridge. Is he coming is he
- 57:09Speaker 1: coming in on the right, Well, maybe he's coming from
- 57:10Speaker 1: this area? Then if you really want to, depending on
- 57:15Speaker 1: there's so many different variables, but take your stand, do
- 57:19Speaker 1: a run and gun and go into the timber a
- 57:22Speaker 1: little bit more and set up and maybe try to
- 57:28Speaker 1: catch him in a staging area or on a travel
- 57:30Speaker 1: route before he gets to um gets to that trail
- 57:36Speaker 1: camera or on a terrain feature that will prevent you
- 57:40Speaker 1: from being seen not only from access but setting up
- 57:43Speaker 1: your stand from their betting area, and then you can
- 57:46Speaker 1: I don't know, that's a little bit more aggressive. The
- 57:49Speaker 1: other option is to when I get a trail camera
- 57:52Speaker 1: picture of a buck at night, let's say midnight, one am,
- 57:56Speaker 1: two am in the morning, Dude, I don't even know
- 57:59Speaker 1: where that buck's bed for the most part, and then
- 58:02Speaker 1: I treat it like that buck doesn't even exist, to
- 58:05Speaker 1: be honest with you, because you can't hunt a deer
- 58:07Speaker 1: at night. So yeah, yeah, I would echo a lot
- 58:12Speaker 1: of what you just said there. I think the two
- 58:13Speaker 1: options are either number one, if you're getting the middle
- 58:17Speaker 1: of the night picture of a deer, to your point,
- 58:20Speaker 1: that means typically that that deer is not betted close
- 58:24Speaker 1: to where your cameras, so he's not living right there.
- 58:27Speaker 1: So you can do one of two things. You can
- 58:29Speaker 1: either number one, do what you just said in the beginning,
- 58:32Speaker 1: which is try to find where he is. Try to
- 58:34Speaker 1: get closer to where he has betted. So if you've
- 58:36Speaker 1: got some kind of hunt or data that points to
- 58:39Speaker 1: the fact that, well, yeah, he's shown up at ten
- 58:42Speaker 1: o'clock at night here at this camera, but that's because
- 58:44Speaker 1: I think maybe he's betted quarter mile over this direction,
- 58:48Speaker 1: I can get closer to that, and you could try
- 58:50Speaker 1: making that move like Dan said, that's a little more aggressive,
- 58:53Speaker 1: but you could try that or make you know, get
- 58:56Speaker 1: closer and closer, Maybe move that camera with you and
- 58:58Speaker 1: then keep tad and maybe now you're starting to get
- 59:01Speaker 1: a picture of him just an hour after dark. Well,
- 59:03Speaker 1: now you know you're getting a little bit closer to that. Um. Now,
- 59:06Speaker 1: of course this changes as the season progresses, right because
- 59:09Speaker 1: once we get into the rut, then that kind of
- 59:11Speaker 1: normal bed defeed pattern is going to change a lot.
- 59:14Speaker 1: But that's one option, or the second option again echoing
- 59:18Speaker 1: what you said, Dan, is the fact that don't hunt
- 59:20Speaker 1: that deer until he does start showing up in daylight.
- 59:22Speaker 1: So if you don't have the ability to relocate, or
- 59:25Speaker 1: if you think he's betted on some other neighboring property
- 59:28Speaker 1: that there's no way you can get closer to it,
- 59:30Speaker 1: then I'd say keep the pressure low in that area
- 59:32Speaker 1: until he actually is moving in daylight, when you actually
- 59:35Speaker 1: have a chance. Because if you hunt that property hard
- 59:38Speaker 1: right now, because you're getting pictures him in the middle
- 59:39Speaker 1: of night and you're just hoping one day he shows up,
- 59:43Speaker 1: you're leaving your scent in there. Every time, you are
- 59:46Speaker 1: probably educating does in the area. You're probably educating other bucks,
- 59:49Speaker 1: And every time you do that, you're probably impacting your
- 59:53Speaker 1: chances of success in the future for that Buck because
- 59:56Speaker 1: he's smelling you or the does that he might be
- 59:58Speaker 1: chasing in November, they're real rising that you're in there,
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: so they don't move in daylight, or they move to
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: a different property, different stuff like that. So don't screw
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: things up until he does start moving in daylight. So
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: try to find a way to safely check that camera
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: once a week or something. And when you do see
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: him show up in daylight, or you do see him
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: show up, you know, close to daylight, then I'd say,
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: when the conditions are right, we know, when you get
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: the right wind or whatever, strike hard and fast, when
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: you've got that daylight movement. That would be my my
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: two thoughts agreed. Okay, Um, this is one that you
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: answered on Facebook. Damn, but I have to say it, Dan,
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: if you could, if you could have your finger back,
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: but could only use crossbows for the rest of your life,
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: would you do it? Finger stays off my friends, I
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: don't need it, I don't need my I don't need
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: my right finger gott to use that compound. Huh, that's right,
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: that's right. I love that one. And then then i'd
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: have to change all my settings, right, I can't be
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: nine fingers anymore. I have to be ten fingers again.
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: There's no no ring to that. Yeah, there's and they're
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: no going back. No, you're right. Um, Okay, when you're
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: doing your running guns setups, how much trimming do you do?
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: Are you forced hunt areas that aren't as thick to
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: allow you to get in and hunt them without need
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: to trim a lot? Or do you just trim it
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: all up, you know, as much as you need to?
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: Are you you start this one? Okay? So I will
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: say that I do as little trimming as possible, um,
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: simply because to the point he made, you know it
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: can it's hard to get in and get a spot
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: trimmed out without making a lot of noise, without leaving
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: sign you know, without branches beyond the ground, just different
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: things that cause spooka deer if you're in there and
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: trying to set up to hunt right now. As a
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: little disturbance as possible is the name of the game.
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: So I try to minimize my trimming. But you know,
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: I'm also not going to leave a limb up that
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: I think is gonna keep me from getting one of
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: the most likely shot opportunities. So I'll get up there
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: and I'm gonna map out where exactly I think those
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: shots are gonna come, and I will, you know, take
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: twenty minutes to very slowly and quietly cut a limb
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: if I think that's going to be an important place.
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: I do definitely take limbs into consideration when picking my trees, though,
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: So if possible, if I possibly can be in the
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: right area and being a tree that doesn't require as
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: much trimming, I'm gonna do it as long as I've
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: got the adequate cover. Um, you kind of want to
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: find that best possible scenario where the trees in the
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: right place, there is some cover up there that's gonna
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: keep you hidden in the tree, but not so much
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: that you need to cut down fifty limbs just to
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: be able to get a shot. Um, that's not always
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: going to be the scenario. So there's gonna be some
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: days when you get trim more, and there's gonna be
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: some days that maybe you need to live with just
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: a tiny bit less cover than you'd like. UM that
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: balancing act is something that you're gonna have to make
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: that decision based off of the experiences you've had in
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: the past and your comfort level with that. Um, that's
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: I guess my take. Yeah, for the most part, I'm
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: the same man. I get up and I try to
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: trim as little as humanly possible, and a lot of
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: it depends on where I think the deer are coming
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: and going from. If I feel that I'm setting up
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: relatively close, I'm trimming way less right and I'm probably
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: not getting as high and my running guns set up
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: because the higher you get, the more you have to trim.
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: So it's you know, these running guns are sneak attacks. Dude,
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: you wanna you want to You want to get in
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: and get out without the deer even knowing you're there.
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: So you know, trimming a lot, I mean that means
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: you're having to take a pole saul and cut like
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: thirty yard shooting lanes. I'm not doing that. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: just it's really hard to get away with that kind
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: of thing. Yep. Um, speaking of running guns, someone in here,
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: I don't I'm not seeing it right now on my
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: little list, but I know that somebody asked if you
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: Dan have considered trying to saddle after hearing about the
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: fact that I've been using it and liking it and
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: that stuff for your running gun idea. Yeah, man, you know,
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: the tree saddle is definitely the fat or the popular
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: notion right now in uh for the running gun guys
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: out there. For me, man, I don't know. I I like,
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: I like the idea of it, and I'm sure it's
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: very comfortable, and I would I would have to play
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: around with it. But right now, man, I just can't
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: get over the fact that if something comes in when
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: you're in a saddle, when something comes in fast and
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: hard and it's on the opposite side of you, on
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: your non it would be on your dominant hand, but
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: you're non dominant shooting side, so you have to twist
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: all the way in the tree. And that just to
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: me not only seems like a lot of movement, but
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: just an awkward shooting form. Where yes, that same kind
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: of thing happens in a tree stand. But I'm able
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: to have stable footing, and I don't know, I I
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: just can't get past that how having to swing the
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: whole body around on the tree. Let's say if a
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: doe pops up and then a buck blows in chasing
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: her or something like that. You know what I mean?
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: That makes sense? No, it does, and that is the
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: one scenario that's tougher out of the saddle. Um, you're
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: right about that. UM. I will say that it has
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: been much easier to maneuver in the stand for in
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: the saddle than I even thought. I Like, in that
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: Montana hunt on day three, I had a shooter show
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: up right and right in front of me and then
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: go behind the tree I was in, and I was
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: able to way easier than if I'd been standing the
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: tree stand. I was able to swing almost an eighty
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: degrees around the tree to still be able to almost
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: get a shot at him as he went around the
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: other side. UM. Now that was my left side and
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: forward side, so it wasn't the scenario you listed there. UM.
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: But yeah, my point being, I think it definitely. I've
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: found there to be some really nice versatility with certain situations.
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: I haven't encountered the one you mentioned yet, So TBD
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: on that. UM. For me, the only the only other
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: thing that you might want or not considered, but another
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: reason why it might not be as good a fit
- 1:06:10Speaker 1: for you is because of those bad knees you've got. Um.
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: And I'm saying that's not You're not not trying to
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: give you a hard time, but because I know you
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: have talked about some knee issues. Um My buddy Dustin,
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: had he blew out his uh oh gosh, this is
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: a c L or m c L or some some
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: cl he blew out something. Um, And he tried to
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: use the saddle the other night and within like an
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: hour of standing on those steps or what he was
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: using some steps on the tree. Um, it was really
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: really hurting him having that consistent pressure on it. So
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: it's it's different physically, It's not like just sitting. You
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: definitely do have more tension. You have weight on your
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: feet or on your knees. Um. So I think there's
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: a certain level of like physical fitness or health that
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: is kind of important to have when using a saddle
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: that maybe isn't quite as important when sitting on a
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: ladder stand or something. Something to think about. Next question,
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: My stand has deer entering from every direction. I literally
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: have deer come from everywhere during my first sit. How
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: do I play the win game in that kind of situation? Man?
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: That's tough. I mean, I have some river bottom stands
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: that are that are like that, and it sounds to
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: me that he is in a circle, right, and he's
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: sitting in the center of the circle. So my suggestion
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: would be to not sit in the center of the
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: circle and sit off to one of the sides closer
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: to the line of the circle, and that way you're
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: you're going to be able to have you know, play
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: the wind a little bit better in in that scenario.
- 1:07:53Speaker 1: But if it's the only option, then I would say, man,
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: get high, go in there, and go in there and
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: try to get um uh, some really good shooting lanes
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: trimmed out before the season starts or after the season ends.
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: Not this year, probably because it's too late, but get
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: as you maybe get a little higher, or depending on
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: the scenario, this might be a good option for a
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: ground line to help reduce some of that set m.
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: It's an interesting idea. Um yeah, you know, that is
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: a tough scenario and kind of along the lines of
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: what you were saying, one easy solution would be, don't
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: sit in that spot right, adjust your location to try
- 1:08:37Speaker 1: to better place yourself from wind perspective, so there aren't
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: dear entering from every direction, or taking advantage of some
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: kind of terrain feature that might you know, cut off
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: their movement and allowing you to have a safe wind
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: section um, or maybe set up so that your wind
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: blows down a creek drainage or over a ridge or whatever. UM.
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: There's options like that. Sometimes you're just gonna have to
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: assume that you're not gonna be able to get away everything.
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: So on something like this my holy Field property, it's
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: got a very high deer population and there's some areas
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: of the property that if I want to hunt it,
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: I know that eventually there's gonna be dear every direction
- 1:09:15Speaker 1: at some point, and you have to go in there
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: making some assumptions and make a sacrifice. Like, all right,
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: I gotta hunt the spot because it's really good, and
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: I know I'm going to have to sacrifice something. So
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: just make sure that the section that you're sacrificing is
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: the very lowest odds area, you know, be thoughtful about
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: at least and realize that, okay, I gotta give up something.
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: Make sure you're going in there when that's something you're
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: giving up is the smallest possible window of risk. Um.
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: And then of course play your scent control as best
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: as you possibly can. So do everything that you know
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: of to try to minimize your scent imprint, whether that
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: be washing your clothes, storing them somewhere that's sent free,
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: spram down with stuff, making sure that you are washed
- 1:09:57Speaker 1: down if possible, to make sure you're not extra stinky. Um.
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: You can try different things that me and Dan have
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: like ozonics units or nose jammer or scent crusher or
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: you know, there's a lot of options out there to
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: try to deal with scent. Um. I think a lot
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: of them help. I don't think any one of them
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: will help you become sent free, but they can help.
- 1:10:18Speaker 1: So try some of those things. They've helped me, they've
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: helped Dan Um. I like your idea, Dana, trying to
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: get really high, that's something that might work. Or the
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: ground get down low that might help. UM. If you're
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: in an area where you've got some terrain, you might
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: be able to take advantage of thermals. So this might
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: be a spot that if you're hunting in a low spot,
- 1:10:38Speaker 1: maybe that is the morning progresses, you're gonna have that
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: thermal start pulling air up the ridge behind you. You
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: might build get away with something in that scenario if
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: you take advantage of that. UM. But again, it's just
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: really hard to answer these kinds of questions without knowing
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: the specifics. So that's a little bit of general advice.
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: I guess yep. Um okay, here's another good one. Um,
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: without the use of trail cameras, how would you break
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: down a piece of property in season if it's a
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: property you've never hunted before? For me? For me, man,
- 1:11:17Speaker 1: it's just it all comes down to being mobile, right.
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: I mean, if you if you don't have trail cameras, right,
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: you're not going to use them. I'm taking that out
- 1:11:25Speaker 1: of the equation. The only way for me to know
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: what is in there and where you know where the
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: deer are coming from is to go in and scout
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: and hunt at the same time. Right, you go in
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: with the stand on your back. You you walk in,
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: you scout it, and you hang up on front, you
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: hang on fresh sign. I mean, that's that's just the
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: first thing that pops into my head. The reason I
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: say that is because if you're going and you're doing
- 1:11:54Speaker 1: scouting in season, you're laying down unwanted cent you're putting
- 1:11:59Speaker 1: on wanted pressure on the herd, and that all that's
- 1:12:02Speaker 1: doing is just kicking out the highest quality deer in
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: that area because they will smell you and they will
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: alter their their route. I guess their pattern on that
- 1:12:13Speaker 1: farm because of you. So the best way to do
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: it is hanging bang What I mean I do? That's
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: dance life philosophy right there, folks. Uh um, yeah, I
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: tend to agree with you in that without cameras, you
- 1:12:30Speaker 1: are dependent on either looking at sign or taking observation
- 1:12:35Speaker 1: data into account. So what you're actually seeing, dear do um?
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: So the first thing I would say is scout the
- 1:12:41Speaker 1: heck out of the map. Look at the aerial map,
- 1:12:43Speaker 1: look at the top of map. Try to identify the
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: key things based off of assumption as you're making from
- 1:12:49Speaker 1: that map. So, where do you think that the food
- 1:12:51Speaker 1: sources are? Where? Do you think the best betting airs are? Where?
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: Based off the trainer aerial maps? Do you think that
- 1:12:57Speaker 1: some funnels or pinch points might be just those base
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: sit kind of features that we use white tail hunters
- 1:13:02Speaker 1: like t kian on identify those best areas on your maps.
- 1:13:07Speaker 1: Then I would dive in and depending on how much
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: time you have, Like if this is like a five
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: day hunt or something like that, and you've got to
- 1:13:13Speaker 1: make it happen. And it's during the rut. Um, maybe
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: it's a public land hunt or this new private land peace. Um.
- 1:13:21Speaker 1: I think that I do not typically do this, but
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: I know a lot of guys do, and I could
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: see why it would make sense, and I probably will
- 1:13:29Speaker 1: do this more often. When I'm trying some new areas out,
- 1:13:31Speaker 1: like this new Nebraska place I'm going to, I might
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: take this tact, which is take a day or half
- 1:13:37Speaker 1: a day during the middle of the day, if if
- 1:13:38Speaker 1: you maybe a rainy day or a windy day when
- 1:13:40Speaker 1: you can get away a little more and do a
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: scout like go and walk to those best looking areas
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: and see like yes or no, are they what I
- 1:13:47Speaker 1: thought they were? And knowing that you are gonna make
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: a big risk on that first day, you're gonna blow
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: some stuff out probably, But if it's during the rut,
- 1:13:56Speaker 1: you might deal get away with it. It's better to
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: learn a bunch on day one and bump a few
- 1:14:00Speaker 1: deer versus and then hopefully will take advantage of that
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: and hunt informed the rest of the time, versus going
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: and blind without knowing anything and just sitting on the
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: edges and waiting for something to come to you without
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: you know, getting any of that intel. So there's a
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: balancing act you have to make right there, and it's
- 1:14:18Speaker 1: always going to be based on how much time you have,
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: how much can you get away with. But the long
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: story short of it is learn as much as you
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: can when scouting, have your stand or whatever with you. Hunt, observe, adjust, hunt,
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: observe adjust. That's how I would go about breaking it down.
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: And typically I would be hunting from the outside in.
- 1:14:38Speaker 1: I would try to be sitting somewhere I can observe
- 1:14:41Speaker 1: and see an area and then see, Okay, it looks
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: like most of the doughs are coming out of that
- 1:14:44Speaker 1: corner of the field or that clearing of the CRP,
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: and then the next day get tight to that and
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: then you're able to see back in that cover a
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: little bit better and then you see, okay, yeah, there's
- 1:14:53Speaker 1: a buck that's cruising down winto there, and then I
- 1:14:55Speaker 1: can adjust the next day eight yards further back. UM.
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: That kind of um step by step strategy is probably
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: the way I go about him. Yeah, and our guests
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: that have been on this podcast, who are you know
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: the guys who go on public ground or wherever out
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: of state trips, A majority of the time on those
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: trips has spent scouting before they go and actually make
- 1:15:20Speaker 1: a move, right, So ye gotta have It's just you
- 1:15:26Speaker 1: need that information. Hunting blind is just waiting for something
- 1:15:30Speaker 1: lucky to happen is usually not the way to go.
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: YEA next question, I've heard Dan mentioned before that having
- 1:15:37Speaker 1: a ginger beard helps kill big deer. I'm going to
- 1:15:40Speaker 1: test this theory this season. I was wondering if he
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: had any tips on styles or grooming that might help.
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: Also tips on how to deal with a wife who's
- 1:15:47Speaker 1: not a fan of the ginger beard. Well, I don't
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: know about your wife. My my wife doesn't mind my beard, right,
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: she doesn't. She doesn't like it Yukon Cornelia style where
- 1:15:59Speaker 1: it's just it and bushy. But here's the catch twenty two,
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: My friend, you can't drop the hammer if you don't
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: have the Yukon cornelius. Does that make sense? Yeah, you
- 1:16:10Speaker 1: gotta have it first before you can shave it off.
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: That's right, And then rutt hits drop the hammer the wife.
- 1:16:19Speaker 1: I know this is there's probably kids listening, but be prepared.
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: The kids for the kids, be prepared because the wife might,
- 1:16:27Speaker 1: you know, get aggressive in her tactics. If you know
- 1:16:30Speaker 1: what I mean, when you drop the hammer, you set
- 1:16:33Speaker 1: when when you drop the hammer, Yeah, alright, orschal barf. Yeah,
- 1:16:38Speaker 1: it's it's high risk, high reward. It's kind of like
- 1:16:40Speaker 1: going in deep to the betting area. It's that kind
- 1:16:42Speaker 1: of situation. So moving on, that's a question. Someone speaking
- 1:16:51Speaker 1: of someone also asked if we think that Mark's baby
- 1:16:53Speaker 1: face scares off dear. That's like if I almost feel
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: like if I hung around you freshly shaved, that people
- 1:17:04Speaker 1: would think that I'm trying to traffick you across the
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: United States, like my pimp. Yeah, like, oh, okay, okay,
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: we gotta go. I'll go down a rabbit hole. Next
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: the next question. Let's then not get too off track here, Um, okay,
- 1:17:20Speaker 1: let's see here. What's another good one. Um, if you
- 1:17:25Speaker 1: had to chew well man, that's okay, here's sort of
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: good question. Do you feel that starting to concentrate on
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: bucks early in your hunting career has hurt you or
- 1:17:37Speaker 1: could hurt someone you know? So does that or that's
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: part one of the questions, And then he says, do
- 1:17:43Speaker 1: you think it would be beneficial for new hunters to
- 1:17:45Speaker 1: start feeling a lot of dough tags before focusing on bucks,
- 1:17:48Speaker 1: so when the moment of truth does come on a
- 1:17:49Speaker 1: good buck, they actually have some experience and have been
- 1:17:53Speaker 1: there before. Um thoughts on that? Then, Okay, here's what
- 1:17:57Speaker 1: I'll say on this. If you are a parent and
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: you start your kid off with a giant deer, what
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: does that kid really have to look forward to? Write?
- 1:18:06Speaker 1: This kid is gonna this kid is gonna go one
- 1:18:09Speaker 1: or two directions. He's gonna say, well, man, I can't
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: shoot a deer that big every year, and I you know,
- 1:18:17Speaker 1: I don't want to shoot a small deer, so I
- 1:18:19Speaker 1: just won't hunt anymore. That's just what I see when
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: I see these people. You know, it's like, hey, look
- 1:18:24Speaker 1: at Johnny's first kill was a hundred you know, hundred deer.
- 1:18:29Speaker 1: I mean, I don't I think that if you want
- 1:18:31Speaker 1: to get comfortable around deer, you have to just go
- 1:18:35Speaker 1: and hang around deer and shoot deer. And I feel
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: that for a new hunter, you go out, you fill
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: those tags and then you stare step up right. I mean,
- 1:18:44Speaker 1: you have to learn. For me, I kind of I
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: don't want to say, I regret focusing on big deer
- 1:18:52Speaker 1: a lot because I got an education and I got
- 1:18:55Speaker 1: it fast, and that education is worth a lot to
- 1:18:58Speaker 1: what I'm doing today. But like for my children, I'm
- 1:19:03Speaker 1: going to let them go out and do whatever they want.
- 1:19:06Speaker 1: If they want to shoot a spike, I'm gonna let
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: him shoot a spike. If they want to shoot a dough,
- 1:19:10Speaker 1: I'm gonna let him shoot a doll. And I'll be
- 1:19:12Speaker 1: there for any advice, but I'm not gonna tell them
- 1:19:15Speaker 1: what they can or can't shoot. Yeah, I agree with you,
- 1:19:20Speaker 1: and I do think that to his point. You know,
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: go out there, do whatever you want, whatever makes you happy.
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: But there there's always this risk when the hunting media
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: US included talks about hunting mature bucks or big bucks
- 1:19:35Speaker 1: or whatever. We talked about that a lot, and if
- 1:19:36Speaker 1: you're a new hunter and you're hearing that, it might
- 1:19:38Speaker 1: be easy to think, oh, well, that's what I need
- 1:19:40Speaker 1: to do too, But you don't. You don't go out there,
- 1:19:44Speaker 1: have a good time. Learn. As Dan said, take it
- 1:19:47Speaker 1: one step at a time. It is not easy figuring
- 1:19:50Speaker 1: out this whole deer hunting things. So don't expect that
- 1:19:52Speaker 1: your first year or in a handful of years you
- 1:19:54Speaker 1: should be out there shooting four year old deer. It's
- 1:19:56Speaker 1: just not gonna happen in most cases. So go out
- 1:19:58Speaker 1: there and shoot the first year you get to answer.
- 1:20:00Speaker 1: If that's you know, if you want to fill that freezer,
- 1:20:02Speaker 1: if you want that experience, that's awesome. Go out enjoy that,
- 1:20:05Speaker 1: get that meat, and then it does prepare you much
- 1:20:10Speaker 1: better for the point if you do ever want to
- 1:20:12Speaker 1: start targeting older deer, Like the question asker said, handling
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: that moment of truth, there's nothing that can prepare you
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: to better handle the moment of truth, especially if it's
- 1:20:22Speaker 1: a mature buck. Then having already pulled the trigger on
- 1:20:25Speaker 1: a lot of other deer, nothing, no amount of practice
- 1:20:28Speaker 1: in the backyard is actually going to simulate the experience
- 1:20:31Speaker 1: of a real live animal in front of you that
- 1:20:33Speaker 1: you need to aim and get a good, quick click, quick, clean,
- 1:20:37Speaker 1: ethical kill. On that experience right there is something that
- 1:20:41Speaker 1: I think that any new hunter needs to get out
- 1:20:43Speaker 1: and just start having. So go out there and shoot
- 1:20:46Speaker 1: some does shoot young bucks, get some amazing protein on
- 1:20:50Speaker 1: your plate, and and learn from that and enjoy that experience.
- 1:20:53Speaker 1: That's what I would say. Word up, word up, um,
- 1:21:00Speaker 1: let's see here, October lull. We've talked about this in
- 1:21:05Speaker 1: a jillion times, but we should just give it like
- 1:21:08Speaker 1: a thirty second cliff, not from both of us, just
- 1:21:10Speaker 1: for someone new. Do we believe in the October law? Dan?
- 1:21:13Speaker 1: What's your cliff? Notes? All right? Dan does not believe
- 1:21:18Speaker 1: in the October law. I will give you a slightly
- 1:21:21Speaker 1: more elaborate version of that answer. I will say that
- 1:21:26Speaker 1: the October lull is not what most people think it is.
- 1:21:31Speaker 1: Most people think that the October law is this time
- 1:21:33Speaker 1: period during the October where dear move less and it's
- 1:21:36Speaker 1: really hard to kill dear. That's not true. Research has
- 1:21:40Speaker 1: shown that buck movement and dear movement in general typically
- 1:21:44Speaker 1: tends to trend up through the entire month of October.
- 1:21:47Speaker 1: But that doesn't necessarily mean that hunters are going to
- 1:21:50Speaker 1: see that, because there's a bunch of different changes happening
- 1:21:53Speaker 1: happening in October. Number one, A bunch of hunters are
- 1:21:56Speaker 1: now in the woods in mid October. Dear adjust to
- 1:21:59Speaker 1: that that change their behavior. They change where they move,
- 1:22:01Speaker 1: they change when they move. Number two, a lot of
- 1:22:04Speaker 1: food sources are changing. You've got some crops that are
- 1:22:07Speaker 1: coming out you've got some crops that are maturing. You've
- 1:22:09Speaker 1: got some crops that are um not as attractive to
- 1:22:12Speaker 1: deer anymore. You've got acorns dropping in the woods. You
- 1:22:15Speaker 1: have a whole bunch of stuff like that that changes
- 1:22:18Speaker 1: deer patterns. Again, if you don't adjust to the deer's
- 1:22:21Speaker 1: changing patterns, you're not going to see that movement. Number Three,
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: the cover available in most areas is changing. You've got
- 1:22:30Speaker 1: leaves dropping, You've got certain grasses that are starting to
- 1:22:32Speaker 1: get matted down or leaf covers coming down. That's opening
- 1:22:36Speaker 1: up the area, opening up the timber in certain ways.
- 1:22:38Speaker 1: So areas that deer felt comfortable moving during daylight on
- 1:22:42Speaker 1: September when there's leaves everywhere might not feel the same
- 1:22:46Speaker 1: way on October seventeenth when the leaves are coming down.
- 1:22:48Speaker 1: And now it's why it open in there. So those
- 1:22:50Speaker 1: deer are going to change where they move during daily
- 1:22:52Speaker 1: because of that too. Again, if you don't adjust for that,
- 1:22:55Speaker 1: you're not going to see the movement. So I would
- 1:22:58Speaker 1: say that the October law is a reality for a
- 1:23:01Speaker 1: lot of people simply because they're not adjusting to these changes.
- 1:23:06Speaker 1: That's my take on the October law. So can you
- 1:23:08Speaker 1: have success during the law. Yes, if you're able to
- 1:23:11Speaker 1: adjust to those changes and you have places and you
- 1:23:14Speaker 1: know how the deer change, if you can get in there, yeah,
- 1:23:17Speaker 1: you can definitely get it done. If you don't understand
- 1:23:20Speaker 1: how those changes are happening, if you don't know where
- 1:23:22Speaker 1: the deer have moved to or how they're changing their behavior,
- 1:23:25Speaker 1: if you're just gonna be going in there blind in
- 1:23:27Speaker 1: mid October, that might not be as good of an idea.
- 1:23:31Speaker 1: You might in that situation put yourself in a better
- 1:23:33Speaker 1: position if you buy your time a little bit until
- 1:23:36Speaker 1: later into the month when you're gonna get another pick
- 1:23:39Speaker 1: up and movement around that pre rut time frame. So
- 1:23:42Speaker 1: it just depends on your circumstances. That's kind of my
- 1:23:44Speaker 1: take on the on the quote unquote law. Would you
- 1:23:48Speaker 1: argue with any of that dinner, I would not. Long
- 1:23:51Speaker 1: story short, You're not gonna kill a deer mid October
- 1:23:54Speaker 1: when it's seventy five degrees outside on a field edge, right,
- 1:23:58Speaker 1: or you could right. There's no rules, there's no black
- 1:24:01Speaker 1: and white. There's always exceptions to the rule. Um, is
- 1:24:05Speaker 1: the that being said drinking game still in effect? And
- 1:24:08Speaker 1: if not, can we bring that back I had to stop. Yeah, stop,
- 1:24:13Speaker 1: you're you haven't said it as much anymore. But back
- 1:24:16Speaker 1: in the day, man, what last year, two years ago?
- 1:24:19Speaker 1: When you first started, it was it was like almost
- 1:24:24Speaker 1: like some people would say, um um um. It was
- 1:24:28Speaker 1: that being said, what do you think about this? Dan,
- 1:24:30Speaker 1: and and that being said, let's move on to the
- 1:24:32Speaker 1: next point. If there was a person doing a drinking game, man,
- 1:24:38Speaker 1: send my regards to their family. I'm sure they're dead.
- 1:24:41Speaker 1: They had a rough year back in exactly. It's a
