- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Tuesday and it's the 5th of
- 0:15May, which always amuses me greatly because after, well, my
- 0:19family celebrates Star Wars Day because we are just lovers of
- 0:23that great mythology and that story.
- 0:26But it always amuses me that on the 5th of May, the fifth of the
- 0:305th, if you hold up your hands, fifth of the fifth, show people
- 0:33your hands. It's actually International Hand
- 0:35Hygiene Day, so it would always be a very serious come down to
- 0:39earth after a bit of shenanigans on the 4th.
- 0:42So hope your hands are clean. Don't forget to sanitise.
- 0:46So today we are continuing on this document which outlines the
- 0:51lands that are assigned to all the different tribes of Israel.
- 0:57And there are different types of reading of the Bible, right?
- 1:00There's the one where you listen intently to every word to hear
- 1:03the truth of what Jesus has done for us.
- 1:06And you, you memorise it. And those words are so
- 1:09important. And there are other passages
- 1:12where it's not so much about the individual words, but it's about
- 1:16the theme. And so if you like, today's
- 1:19reading is a bit of a meditation.
- 1:21Today's reading is designed for these words just to wash over
- 1:25you. And as you hear me reading
- 1:27through these lists of people and places, the theme and the
- 1:33the overarching message is of God's faithfulness.
- 1:37So as you hear my, my my dulcet tones reading these words on and
- 1:41on and on today, my prayer is that you would have the space
- 1:45and the time to just reflect on God's provision and faithfulness
- 1:49and goodness to you. So don't think I've got to got
- 1:52to sit through this long list, think it's a gift of time where
- 1:56I can spend this time reflecting on God's goodness to me.
- 1:59How's that for a reframe? Isn't this wonderful?
- 2:02So let's do this together. Let's enjoy this meditative time
- 2:06focusing on God and His faithfulness and goodness to us,
- 2:09His people, as we read together Joshua chapter 17.
- 2:23The next allotment of land was given to the half tribe of
- 2:26Manasseh, the descendants of Joseph's older son Maka.
- 2:31The first born son of Manasseh was the father of Gilead because
- 2:35his descendants were experienced soldiers.
- 2:38The regions of Gilead and Bashan on the east side of the Jordan
- 2:41had already been given to him, so the allotment on the West
- 2:44side of the Jordan was for the remaining families within the
- 2:47clans of the tribe of Manasseh, Abiasa, Helik, Asriel, Shechem,
- 2:53Hefa and Shemida. These clans represent the male
- 2:58descendants of Manasa son of Joseph.
- 3:02However, Zealafihad, a descendant of Hefa son of
- 3:05Gilead, son of Maca son of Manasa, had no sons.
- 3:10He had only daughters whose names were Mala, Noah, Hogla,
- 3:16Milka, and Terza. These women came to Eliezer, the
- 3:20priest Joshua son of Nun, and the Israelite leaders and said,
- 3:24the Lord commanded Moses to give us a grant of land along with
- 3:28the men of our tribe. So Joshua gave them a grant of
- 3:32land along with their uncles, as the Lord had commanded.
- 3:36As a result, Manasa's total allocation came to 10 parcels of
- 3:41land in addition to the land of Gilead and Bashan across the
- 3:44Jordan River. Because the female descendants
- 3:47of Manasseh received a grant of land along with the male
- 3:50descendants, the land of Gilead was given to the rest of the
- 3:54male descendants of Manasseh. The boundary of the tribe of
- 3:57Manasseh extended from the border of Asha to Mikmathath
- 4:01near Shechem. Then the boundary went S from
- 4:05Mikmathath to the settlement near the spring of Tapua.
- 4:09The lands surrounding Tapua belonged to Manasa, but the town
- 4:12of Tapua itself on the border of Manassas territory, belonged to
- 4:16the tribe of Ephraim. From the spring of Tapua, the
- 4:20boundary of Manasa followed the Karna ravine to the
- 4:23Mediterranean Sea. Several towns South of the
- 4:26ravine were inside Manassas territory, but they actually
- 4:30belonged to the tribe of Ephraim.
- 4:32In general, however, the land South of the ravine belonged to
- 4:36Ephraim, and the land north of the ravine belonged to Manasa.
- 4:40Manasa's boundary ran along the northern side of the ravine and
- 4:43ended at the Mediterranean Sea. North of Manasa was the
- 4:47territory of Asha, and to the east was the territory of
- 4:51Issachar. The following towns within the
- 4:54territory of Issachar and Asha, however, were given to Manasa.
- 4:58Bethshan. Iblim, Dora, that is,
- 5:02Nephathdor, Edor, Tarnak and Megador, each with their
- 5:08surrounding settlements. But the descendants of Manasseh
- 5:12were unable to occupy these towns because the Canaanites
- 5:15were determined to stay in that region.
- 5:18Later, however, when the Israelites became strong enough,
- 5:21they forced the Canaanites to work as slaves, but they did not
- 5:24drive them out of the land. The descendants of Joseph came
- 5:28to Joshua and asked, Why have you given us only one portion of
- 5:32land as our homeland when the Lord has blessed us with so many
- 5:36people? Joshua replied, If there are so
- 5:39many of you, and if the Hill Country of Ephraim is not large
- 5:43enough for you, clear out land for yourselves in the forest
- 5:46where the parasites and Raphaelites live.
- 5:49The descendants of Joseph responded, It's true that the
- 5:53Hill Country is not large enough for us, but all the Canaanites
- 5:56in the lowlands have iron Chariots, both those in
- 6:00Bethshahn and its surrounding settlements, and those in the
- 6:03valley of Jezreel. They are too strong for us.
- 6:07Then Joshua said to the tribe of Ephraim and Manasseh, the
- 6:10descendants of Joseph, since you are so large and strong, you
- 6:15will be given more than one portion.
- 6:18The forests of the Hill Country will be yours as well, clear as
- 6:21much of the land as you wish and take possession of its farthest
- 6:25corners. And you will drive out the
- 6:27Canaanites from the valleys too, even though they are strong and
- 6:31have iron Chariots. Ah Lord, you truly are a kind
- 6:46God of provision, but more than that, you are a God of order.
- 6:51And as we read through this document of this land being set
- 6:56aside and set apart for your different tribes, Lord, we see
- 7:00the great pains that have been gone to in your spirit inspired
- 7:05word that everyone would understand and know whose land
- 7:09belongs to who so that they can be order and that everyone can
- 7:13have a place to be. We thank You that You know our
- 7:18needs and that You provide for us in all the big ways and all
- 7:23the little ways because you see into the smallest corners of our
- 7:27hearts and those needs that we would never vocalise but you
- 7:31know. Ah Lord, thank you for being our
- 7:34loving, gracious Father who knows these things and gives us
- 7:40good gifts accordingly. We are just humbled and amazed
- 7:47by Your goodness to us, and we praise You and we lift you up
- 7:52and put you at the highest point in our lives, our wonderful God.
- 7:57And we pray all of these things are in the name of your Son
- 8:00Jesus. Amen.
