Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: This is Kevin Daley from Radio Folks and I'm joined
- 0:03Speaker 1: today by Rob Small, who's going to tell us about
- 0:06Speaker 1: a charity run with a difference.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Hello Rob, how are you? Yeah? Hi Dayah? Doing really good?
- 0:10Speaker 1: Yeah, thanks good, Thanks thanks for joining me today, Rob. Now,
- 0:12Speaker 1: now before we go into the run itself, you're raising
- 0:16Speaker 1: money for two charities, So tell us what they are,
- 0:19Speaker 1: a little bit about them.
- 0:21Speaker 3: Okay, So yeah, the two charities are Young Lives Foundation
- 0:25Speaker 3: and Some John's Ambulance. So the Young Lives Foundation, the
- 0:29Speaker 3: idea of them is to help people become more resilient, confident,
- 0:32Speaker 3: able to reach their potential, and particularly those who have
- 0:36Speaker 3: experienced difficult circumstances being being care risk of solution, struggling
- 0:42Speaker 3: with mental health.
- 0:43Speaker 2: And we all know that. I mean, it's really hard
- 0:45Speaker 2: for young.
- 0:46Speaker 3: People generally, and if you haven't had the best start
- 0:49Speaker 3: in life, and it just makes it ten times worse.
- 0:55Speaker 3: And so the idea of a Young Lives Foundation is that,
- 0:58Speaker 3: you know, they come in and they have an advocacy program,
- 1:02Speaker 3: so they help young people have their voices heard when
- 1:07Speaker 3: important decisions are being made about their lives, you know,
- 1:09Speaker 3: such as social care education. They provide mentoring, so they
- 1:14Speaker 3: provide trained volunteer mentors who work one on one with
- 1:19Speaker 3: the young people to build up confidence, improve the behavior,
- 1:22Speaker 3: develop life skills.
- 1:24Speaker 2: And all that sort of thing.
- 1:26Speaker 3: And also have a befriending scheme which is independent visitors
- 1:30Speaker 3: where they match volunteers with children care who may have
- 1:33Speaker 3: little or no contact with family, give them a consistent,
- 1:37Speaker 3: trusted adult who offers companionship for encouragement and opportunities to
- 1:41Speaker 3: experience new activities. And then there's John's Ambulance. Everybody knows
- 1:46Speaker 3: who John's Ambrudance are. You know that they provide teaching
- 1:50Speaker 3: life saving aid, delivering first aid, training of schools, workplaces, communities,
- 1:56Speaker 3: event medical.
- 1:57Speaker 2: Cover like beat the Beat the Right.
- 2:00Speaker 1: Okay, So I mean we all know John Zamao's like
- 2:03Speaker 1: you say, and most of them are volunteers, but they
- 2:06Speaker 1: still need equipment, don't they and training exercises. So it's
- 2:11Speaker 1: a very important charity. So there's two great charities. So
- 2:14Speaker 1: we're done to you. So now it's time to tell
- 2:17Speaker 1: us about the race itself. So let's start with the basics,
- 2:20Speaker 1: where and when is the race and then we go
- 2:22Speaker 1: into detail after that.
- 2:24Speaker 3: Okay, So the races in Wingham it's on the sixteenth
- 2:27Speaker 3: of August and it starts at eleven am. So and
- 2:33Speaker 3: all routes will start and finish at the anchor.
- 2:36Speaker 1: The anchor, So that's a pub in the village, is it, Yeah,
- 2:40Speaker 1: finish on the high street, so I mean the anchor.
- 2:44Speaker 1: Obviously you must have approached them and asked them about
- 2:47Speaker 1: this idea, and it sounds like they've been very supportive,
- 2:49Speaker 1: doesn't it.
- 2:50Speaker 3: Yeah, they've been absolutely brilliant. Kevin Michel, the landlord and landlady.
- 2:54Speaker 3: I approached them initially and said that I was looking
- 2:57Speaker 3: to put on this run that they Yeah, they've they've
- 3:00Speaker 3: been supportive along all the way along. They have flyers
- 3:04Speaker 3: and they've passed information around all around the village. They
- 3:08Speaker 3: could get quite a few runners who go into the
- 3:11Speaker 3: pub after races, and they've been promoting it to them
- 3:14Speaker 3: as well.
- 3:15Speaker 2: So yeah, they've been they've been equally helpful in excelling it.
- 3:19Speaker 1: So now I said earlier as a race with a difference,
- 3:22Speaker 1: and obviously a lot of thoughts goes into this. I
- 3:25Speaker 1: suppose now I know what it is. But what I'm
- 3:28Speaker 1: going to do now is hand over to you to
- 3:30Speaker 1: tell us that the whole concept of the race and
- 3:32Speaker 1: what it's all about.
- 3:34Speaker 3: Yes, So the whole idea of it is it's meant
- 3:37Speaker 3: to be as inclusive possible for runners of all abilities.
- 3:42Speaker 2: So I call it on the Finder race.
- 3:47Speaker 3: I call it one mile to Ultra because it's ten
- 3:50Speaker 3: separate routes between one and ten miles, So Route one
- 3:53Speaker 3: is one mile, Route two too, all the way up
- 3:55Speaker 3: to Route ten ten miles and you can run as
- 3:58Speaker 3: many or.
- 3:59Speaker 2: As few as you want.
- 4:00Speaker 3: So if you're a park runner, you might run routes
- 4:03Speaker 3: one and two or Route three. Yeah, if you're a
- 4:05Speaker 3: marathon runner, you might run routes ten, nine and seven.
- 4:13Speaker 2: Yeah, does make twenty six? Yeah, yeah, yeah, Yeah, you
- 4:17Speaker 2: have to do a.
- 4:17Speaker 1: Three hundred and eighty five yards somewhere, but yeah, yeah,
- 4:20Speaker 1: I can see where you're coming from.
- 4:21Speaker 2: And yeah, if you're an ultra runner, have a go
- 4:25Speaker 2: trial ten.
- 4:25Speaker 3: I mean that's fifty five miles if you've done that,
- 4:28Speaker 3: and it's fifty five miles in ten hours.
- 4:30Speaker 2: So it is a challenge. It's doable, but it's a
- 4:33Speaker 2: real challenge for ult runners as well.
- 4:35Speaker 1: So that is a different in itself. But also there's
- 4:39Speaker 1: two words that I think the runners should realize What
- 4:43Speaker 1: is also different about this race is it self guiding,
- 4:46Speaker 1: So tell us about that.
- 4:48Speaker 3: Yeah, so that there won't be marshals out on the routes,
- 4:51Speaker 3: there won't be any road closures or anything.
- 4:54Speaker 2: Most of the routes are going to be on roads
- 4:58Speaker 2: that have less traffic.
- 5:00Speaker 3: Or footpaths, but there are a couple where you need
- 5:04Speaker 3: to cross over busy roads and so you need to
- 5:06Speaker 3: be careful. But there's there's lots of ways that they
- 5:09Speaker 3: can navigate. There will be signposts all out around the route,
- 5:14Speaker 3: which me and my me and my misses will be
- 5:17Speaker 3: spending Friday night and Saturday putting all around and it's
- 5:21Speaker 3: going to take all day because there's a lot to do.
- 5:24Speaker 3: And there's there's videos online of each of the routes.
- 5:28Speaker 1: Well, that's the thing that I picked up on. You've
- 5:30Speaker 1: actually got videos online. So what you're saying is this
- 5:34Speaker 1: just picked the one mile run for example, So you've
- 5:38Speaker 1: had to go round and video the one mile route
- 5:41Speaker 1: and then download it and prepare it and make sure
- 5:45Speaker 1: it's that a user friendly for somebody that's running the
- 5:48Speaker 1: one mile race?
- 5:49Speaker 2: Is that right? Yeah?
- 5:50Speaker 3: Absolutely, So I start every route, I start from the
- 5:54Speaker 3: anchor and I record which direction I'm going in every
- 5:57Speaker 3: turn that you turn off, record that any pitfalls and
- 6:02Speaker 3: things that need to look out for you, Like some of.
- 6:05Speaker 2: The roots when I ran them were particularly muddy.
- 6:06Speaker 3: Now obviously we've had a period of extended sunshine, so
- 6:10Speaker 3: it's they're unlikely to be money, but it's ye know,
- 6:13Speaker 3: there's things that people can take care of the places
- 6:15Speaker 3: where they're most likely to get lost.
- 6:19Speaker 2: There's a couple of roots where there's cows in the fields.
- 6:22Speaker 1: So this must have taken you. I don't know how
- 6:24Speaker 1: long did it tell you to get so how long
- 6:27Speaker 1: did it tell you to get all those roots together?
- 6:30Speaker 2: Well, I didn't do it in one hit and every
- 6:34Speaker 2: season by the sound of it.
- 6:35Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah, So so I'll start a few months back.
- 6:39Speaker 3: Just every week I'd run one or two. Sometimes for
- 6:43Speaker 3: the short one, I do three routes. And then just
- 6:46Speaker 3: because obviously, yeah, recording the videos, that takes a lot
- 6:49Speaker 3: of extra time as well, because you know there might
- 6:51Speaker 3: be a bit where I've record.
- 6:52Speaker 2: Is a bit and I've done that wrong. Let me
- 6:54Speaker 2: go back and do that again. It's taken several months, but.
- 6:59Speaker 1: And I imagine in all kinds of weather, I mean,
- 7:03Speaker 1: it did you sort of get home and it was
- 7:05Speaker 1: pouring the rain.
- 7:06Speaker 2: You think, oh no, I'll.
- 7:07Speaker 1: Have to do that on a sunny day.
- 7:08Speaker 3: There are a couple of times where I'd run a
- 7:11Speaker 3: route and it might start absolutely.
- 7:13Speaker 2: Chucking it down halfway through. I can't use it. I
- 7:15Speaker 2: can't even I even touch my phone.
- 7:17Speaker 3: I can't record all stops, so I'd have to go
- 7:20Speaker 3: around and do that route again. And yeah, so yeah,
- 7:23Speaker 3: I mean you'll see on the videos there's there's lots
- 7:25Speaker 3: of different weather conditions and I kind of pick the
- 7:28Speaker 3: best ones out of them.
- 7:29Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, I mean it's a tough question this, but
- 7:32Speaker 1: how many miles do you think you covered in filming
- 7:34Speaker 1: that ten mile routes?
- 7:36Speaker 3: Probably influenting the routes I had to rerun probably seventy
- 7:41Speaker 3: eighty miles eighty miles.
- 7:43Speaker 2: So there you go.
- 7:44Speaker 1: And if you do enter this race when you're running
- 7:47Speaker 1: it and just think of rub out there in the
- 7:49Speaker 1: boy and Raine and going back and having to do
- 7:51Speaker 1: it all over again. Right as a rob, I think
- 7:55Speaker 1: we've covered most things now, So is there anything else
- 7:59Speaker 1: you want to add before we start giving out any
- 8:01Speaker 1: details or anything like that.
- 8:04Speaker 3: Really, just that this is your race, so you can
- 8:07Speaker 3: run it in any way that you want.
- 8:08Speaker 2: You know, you can walk it if you want. You know,
- 8:10Speaker 2: there's no there's no set thing that.
- 8:13Speaker 3: You have to run any route in a certain time
- 8:15Speaker 3: as long as you're back by nine pm before the
- 8:17Speaker 3: last of water bill rings. Every route that you completely
- 8:19Speaker 3: gets counted. You've only got to run a single route.
- 8:23Speaker 2: To get a medal.
- 8:24Speaker 3: So so you know, if you're if you're a park runner,
- 8:27Speaker 3: just one and two. Yeah, and you get mad of it, but.
- 8:31Speaker 1: We must point out whilst it's it's a fun run,
- 8:34Speaker 1: you've had to go through some hoops, haven't you to
- 8:36Speaker 1: get this run underway? And because you know, you just
- 8:41Speaker 1: can't turn up and put a run on. And this
- 8:43Speaker 1: is just a few of you, but this is like
- 8:46Speaker 1: you've had to get ambulance cover anything else you've had
- 8:49Speaker 1: to do.
- 8:50Speaker 3: Yeah, so I've got to get ambulance covered because you're
- 8:53Speaker 3: obviously you always you always hope for the best, but
- 8:55Speaker 3: you're playing for the worst. I hope that nobody gets
- 8:58Speaker 3: injured at all, but if you do, then you're covered.
- 9:01Speaker 2: But then there's also things.
- 9:03Speaker 3: Like public liability insurance you have to go through dovercounts
- 9:06Speaker 3: or to get to approve of that and their safety
- 9:09Speaker 3: advisory group, and there's you know, printing materials and all
- 9:14Speaker 3: the flyers and things, and the cover for the food
- 9:18Speaker 3: and the day. So again on the Saturday night, me
- 9:24Speaker 3: and my good lady will be making sandwiches of every
- 9:28Speaker 3: various description you can imagine, just trying to cover everyone's
- 9:32Speaker 3: sort of nutritional needs as they go through.
- 9:34Speaker 2: It as well.
- 9:35Speaker 1: Right, Okay, so I think we've covered everything wrong. So
- 9:38Speaker 1: the thing that people will want to know is the
- 9:40Speaker 1: facts about the race and how can they get in
- 9:43Speaker 1: touch and where do they go to and stuff like that.
- 9:45Speaker 1: So let's give them out some details.
- 9:47Speaker 2: Okay.
- 9:48Speaker 3: So yeah, the races entry fees twenty pound. We've currently
- 9:53Speaker 3: got sixty two runners signed up. We've got a limit
- 9:57Speaker 3: of one hundred for the insurance purposes, thirty eight spots
- 10:02Speaker 3: remaining if you want it.
- 10:04Speaker 2: So if you want to sign up, you can sign
- 10:07Speaker 2: up find.
- 10:08Speaker 3: A race dot com, slash events, slash beat Dash the
- 10:12Speaker 3: Dash Bell, or you can just go through the website
- 10:16Speaker 3: Beat the Bell dot UK and there's a link on there.
- 10:19Speaker 2: That will take you through to the registration page.
- 10:22Speaker 3: If you want any information about the race, you can
- 10:25Speaker 3: go to infot Beat the Bell just email info at
- 10:28Speaker 3: Beat the Build at UK and I'll get back.
- 10:31Speaker 2: To you and answer any questions you need.
- 10:34Speaker 1: Right, excellent, Rob, Now, so we've got what have we got?
- 10:37Speaker 1: Is about just over a week to go, now, is it? Yeah? So,
- 10:41Speaker 1: and I think that normally a race kind of as
- 10:47Speaker 1: it reaches its start date. I think you're going to
- 10:49Speaker 1: find you will get well. I hope you do get
- 10:52Speaker 1: those extra numbers. I mean you've put in all the work.
- 10:55Speaker 1: You're put in miles of training, you put in miles
- 10:57Speaker 1: of running, and you and the anchor really need to
- 11:02Speaker 1: have a little pat on the back because you've done
- 11:04Speaker 1: so much work raising money for two charities and I
- 11:08Speaker 1: really really hope that it all goes well for you day.
- 11:11Speaker 1: So on the day, sorry, I can't be there. I'm
- 11:13Speaker 1: comparing the race somewhere else, but I shall be thinking
- 11:16Speaker 1: of you and looking out for reports and so is
- 11:19Speaker 1: anything else you want to add before we wind up? Yes?
- 11:22Speaker 3: I should mention as well the fantastic sponsors that we've had.
- 11:27Speaker 3: So there's a Gibson's Farm Shop that they provided a
- 11:30Speaker 3: hamper which I'll be presenting to the person who's run
- 11:35Speaker 3: the greatest distance in the shortest time. So if there's
- 11:38Speaker 3: two runners that have run all fifty five, make sure
- 11:41Speaker 3: you are getting at your best time that you possibly can.
- 11:43Speaker 3: There's a wing of Central Stores that they're providing the medals,
- 11:49Speaker 3: and there's red flooring.
- 11:53Speaker 2: There's a flooring.
- 11:55Speaker 3: Shop which is just actually two doors down for the
- 11:58Speaker 3: anchor they've decided to support. Well, so yeah it's and
- 12:03Speaker 3: I can't forget Wingham Will's Water who are providing all
- 12:08Speaker 3: the water.
- 12:08Speaker 1: For Wow, so important these days actually this climate and
- 12:11Speaker 1: that Yeah excellent, yeah, excellent, right, Rob, Well, thanks for
- 12:15Speaker 1: taking the time to come and have a chat. I
- 12:17Speaker 1: really do hope it's successful and the charities gain and
- 12:21Speaker 1: and just good lutch everyone on the day, and I
- 12:23Speaker 1: hope you have a fantastic day.
- 12:25Speaker 2: Well, thanks very much and it's bringing great talking to you.
- 12:27Speaker 1: Thank you,
