- 0:00Sam Silvers: Um, so w- we gave him that vaccination.
- 0:04Um, w- we've, we've gave him like a Dectomax or an Ivomec injectable
- 0:09for some internal/external parasites, things like that.
- 0:13Um, we're probably gonna hit him with some kinda other wormer too, I would
- 0:17say, maybe like, um, a Safeguard or a Valbazen or a Cydectin, something like
- 0:25that to get some of those internals.
- 0:26And then, and then we wanna, we wanna alternate those monthly, right?
- 0:30Right.
- 0:30They need to be- Sure ... wormed every month.
- 0:32I think that that's key, uh, for a lot of things.
- 0:36And then we start talking about things like, like heel mites and stuff like that.
- 0:40Um, there's a million different techniques out there.
- 0:57Logan Newsom: All right, guys.
- 0:57We welcome, uh, welcome you back to The Drench Line.

- 1:59Um, Logan's got a big one coming up tonight as we're shooting this, the 806
- 2:02Live, some really good sheep in there.
- 2:04Um, but like always, just reach out to us if you have any questions.
- 2:08Logan Newsom: Okay, so we picked up, uh, you know, I guess, or pr- or picking up
- 2:11where we left off with episode three.
- 2:15Uh, we've got, we've got a good one in the barn, okay?
- 2:18We've, we've went through, we've done all the checklists that we talked about.
- 2:22Um, we found the one that we want.
- 2:23We wrote the check.
- 2:24We got him home.
- 2:26What now?
- 2:28Sam Silvers: Uh, we keep him alive.
- 2:29Logan Newsom: Yeah.
- 2:30Sam Silvers: That's the main part, I think.
- 2:32Um, b- before we get into that, um, I thought you did a really
- 2:36good job on your hair this morning.
- 2:37Logan Newsom: Absolutely.
- 2:38Yeah.
- 2:38Sam Silvers: You got, you got lined up yesterday.
- 2:40Logan Newsom: I did.
- 2:40I got lined up.
- 2:41Um, you know, I went to the barber.
- 2:44I think we had a little, you know, for folks that listened on the
- 2:46last one, we don't go to salons.
- 2:49Oh, okay.
- 2:49Men go to barbers, barber shop.
- 2:51That's where we go.
- 2:52Um, yeah, cleaned up, nice.
- 2:55Sam Silvers: Looks good.
- 2:55Yeah.
- 2:56Cool.
- 2:56Logan Newsom: Beard oil.
- 2:57Everything's ready.
- 2:58Sam Silvers: I wish I had hair.
- 3:00Logan Newsom: We can work on that.
- 3:01That's in the next episode.
- 3:02Melatonin.
- 3:04Get sponsored by some, one of those- Yeah, we- ... implant companies maybe.
- 3:06Yeah,
- 3:06Sam Silvers: yeah, maybe, like Bosley for Men or something like that.
- 3:09Logan Newsom: For those guys that, you know, don't know, Sam is at some point
- 3:13probably gonna go across the pond and look at the hair implant deal, and
- 3:17I would definitely am probably gonna be in attendance when he does that.
- 3:20Sam Silvers: Yeah.
- 3:20Y- you're gonna be my reference point.
- 3:22Like, I, I want it like this, so I don't come back looking like, you
- 3:25know, Donald Trump or something.
- 3:28Okay, so we got him home, right?
- 3:31Yeah.
- 3:31We're, we're backing, we're backing up to the pens, and we're fixing
- 3:33to unload this little booger, and, uh, w- where do we start?
- 3:37That's a big question that we get a lot.
- 3:39Um, and I think it's still something that, that changes yearly w- with me
- 3:44of what we do as pre-regiment protocol.
- 3:47Um, but some things that I like to think about is, um, y- you know,
- 3:52gut health is important to me.
- 3:55Um- Just immunity is important to me, um, i- and keeping those things,
- 4:01obviously I know that sounds trivial, but keeping them alive and keeping
- 4:05them on feed a- and trying to keep those bugs out of them, if you will.
- 4:09Um- Sure ... so what are some things that you'll first do when you unload off
- 4:14that trailer with, with that in mind?
- 4:15Logan Newsom: Yeah, and I think that's, you know, like kind of what you said,
- 4:17you know, the age-old saying, you know, like, sheep are looking for a place
- 4:20to die, or goats, you know, whatever.
- 4:22And not that, you know, that's 100% true, but, like, we're taking those animals
- 4:28out of their environment that they've- were obviously born into, you know, maybe
- 4:32they're fresh weaned, whatever that looks like, and then we'll put them into a
- 4:35new environment, you know, maybe across the state, maybe across the country.
- 4:39Um, you know, so not only just, you know, kind of health related, but that
- 4:44whole environmental setting, s- the stress that can happen with weather
- 4:48events and new pens and new dirt.
- 4:49I mean, just, just all of it.
- 4:51Other sheep, you know, they've been in maybe pens with, you know, their
- 4:54buddies and, you know, creep pens and all that, you know, as they've
- 4:56kind of grown out, and then all of a sudden, you know, we're kicking them
- 4:59into a pen of, you know, maybe two or three at the house or whatever.
- 5:02So you've put these animals into a stressful situation.
- 5:06So I think that's probably the biggest thing that, you know, we have to sit back
- 5:09and really think about is, like, how can we manage that stress, because I do think
- 5:14that's probably the beginning point of a lot of the things that can go wrong.
- 5:19Um, you know, so like whenever we, whenever we get those home and
- 5:23we get them and, you know, we're, we're big, especially early on,
- 5:27kind of group pens type situation.
- 5:29We don't ever wanna put anything just in a pen by itself, you
- 5:32know, or anything like that.
- 5:33So we might put them in a pen of, you know, three or four more, and, um, I
- 5:37think the biggest thing is you obviously gotta, first and foremost, like,
- 5:41they've gotta figure out where feed is.
- 5:42They gotta figure out where the water is.
- 5:44They gotta figure out where the hay is.
- 5:45You know, just kind of like, "Hey, here's your new home.
- 5:48Let's get those things on feed.
- 5:50Let's make sure they drink.
- 5:52Let's make sure they're eating." Because those animals that are eating and, you
- 5:55know, drinking, obviously, you know, at the beginning level of that health
- 5:59stage are obviously gonna do better.
- 6:02Yeah.
- 6:02And so that's always kind of like first and foremost, you know,
- 6:04kind of maybe where we start.
- 6:07Sam Silvers: Yeah, a- and I think we do too.
- 6:08Um, Dr. Chris Cassidy, who's on our tech support team at BioZyme, i- big in the
- 6:14cattle world, he always says something that, that kind of sticks with me is, "We
- 6:18need to be proactive and not reactive."
- 6:20Sure.
- 6:21Right?
- 6:22Um, a- and I think in, in general health and maintenance of, of these small
- 6:26ruminants, that's what I look at is, is let's be proactive and not reactive, and
- 6:30what I mean by that is let's, let's try to offset any of these problems we're gonna
- 6:34have before we ever get there, not just reactionary, like, "Oh, that one's sick.
- 6:38Now I need to doctor him." I wanna prevent him from ever getting sick, and I, I think
- 6:42environment's really important, right?
- 6:44Good clean pens.
- 6:45Um, y- you know, let him, let him co-mingle with some others.
- 6:49Doesn't need to be stressed out by himself.
- 6:51Um- That's something that we do, you know, all the time at our house.
- 6:55If we have a customer that comes and picks up, maybe they buy one lamb,
- 6:59the first question I'll ask them when they're picking them up is, "Hey, do you
- 7:02have any other animals at h- at home?"
- 7:04Logan Newsom: Yeah.
- 7:04"Do you need a feeding buddy?" You know-
- 7:05" Sam Silvers: Do you need a feeding buddy?" A- and I'll, I'll
- 7:07send a feeding buddy with them.
- 7:09Sure.
- 7:09Usually it's one that's not very good or, or maybe it's a DD or something like that.
- 7:13But-
- 7:13Logan Newsom: Ewe lamb type deal.
- 7:14Sam Silvers: Ewe lamb- Like you had a bunch.
- 7:15Yep ... and I just tell them, "Hey, you, you bring it back when you get another
- 7:18one or, you know, haul it to the sale barn later and, and, and send me the
- 7:22check. But I, I want that, that good one they bought off to a good start."
- 7:26Logan Newsom: Absolutely.
- 7:26Yeah.
- 7:26And I think that's, you know, something that, you know, we're
- 7:29probably in a situation where there's always sheep at the house, right?
- 7:32You know, I mean, so it's easy for, you know, and even like breeders or, you
- 7:35know, families that might have multiple kids and feed a lot of them, but some
- 7:38of those families that maybe they just feed one or two or, you know, maybe
- 7:41they're going to an ag facility type deal and maybe they're the first ones that,
- 7:45you know, might have bought something.
- 7:47So like, I think that's important.
- 7:48Like again, you know, it's kind of going back to that whole stress deal.
- 7:50Like you don't wanna just take those things from day one and we're gonna
- 7:54pull 'em out of, you know, wean them- Yep ... move them, all the stuff, and then
- 7:58boom, put 'em into a pen by their self.
- 8:01I think that's just kind of almost like, you know, the recipe for a
- 8:03disaster in terms of just things not getting a good start early on.
- 8:07Yeah.
- 8:08So what is, like whenever we're kind of talking about that, you know, we'll kind
- 8:11of hit on this and kind of, you know, as we kind of go down that road and, you
- 8:14know, again, as we kind of work through this, this is obviously things that we do.
- 8:18I'm not by any means sitting here saying that it, you know,
- 8:20has to be done like that.
- 8:21I mean, this is just things that we've done that we felt like, you know, have
- 8:24worked for each one of our families and, and our management programs.
- 8:28But what is, what is that kind of that, you know, maybe some vaccines,
- 8:32deworming protocol, like what's kind of that protocol look like
- 8:35as far as day one, let's say day one to like seven, you know- Yeah
- 8:38kind of what that looks like that first week?
- 8:40Sam Silvers: Yeah.
- 8:40And, and I, I know it's gonna probably differ, but there's some
- 8:44things in my mind that I always worry about o- on, on fresh lambs.
- 8:47A- and one is cocci, right?
- 8:51Um, two is, is respiratory.
- 8:55I'm worried about that.
- 8:56So I'm worried about cocci, I'm worried about respiratory, and
- 8:59then probably three, the big one for me now with this whole leg
- 9:02wool thing is external parasites.
- 9:04Sure.
- 9:04What I mean by like, uh, um, y- you know, heel mites, things of that nature, uh,
- 9:10maybe ear ticks, and then probably lastly I'm gonna worry about, um, like CDT,
- 9:16overeating tetanus, that kind of thing, um, and maybe some internal parasites.
- 9:21So I guess that's six core things- That we're gonna focus on ... uh, what
- 9:24I would call the core things that I wanna, I, I wanna manage and get rid of.
- 9:27Um, you know, so when we unload, um, everything's, uh, first thing
- 9:34that's gonna happen is, you know, you know, Jurahee big on that.
- 9:36Jurahee will come out and she's gonna check 'em for heel mites first thing.
- 9:39That's what she does while I'm probably, you know, treating them for some cocci
- 9:43regiment, um, or maybe I'm giving them a, a shot of Nuflor or something
- 9:48like that just for respiratory.
- 9:50Or I'm deworming with, like, Dectomax to, to help with some
- 9:53external parasites, things like that.
- 9:55Um, a- and we'll get into those later, but I, I just y- you know, that's
- 9:59something we all check for right there, right off the bat as we're unloading.
- 10:02Logan Newsom: And then, you know, obviously with Jurahee, and, uh, that
- 10:06doesn't surprise me at all that she's, like, the leg wool, you know, queen.
- 10:10Sam Silvers: Nazi.
- 10:11Yeah.
- 10:11Logan Newsom: Like, uh, do you start wrapping them immediately?
- 10:14Sam Silvers: Uh, not immediately, but she will wrap them within
- 10:17probably the first two weeks.
- 10:19Logan Newsom: Yeah, inside joke.
- 10:20We'll obviously get into that, um, probably- ... in later episodes, but,
- 10:23uh, Jurahee definitely is the person to probably reach out if you need
- 10:28to talk to someone in the Silvers household about leg wool regimen.
- 10:31Um, yeah, so, like, you know, similar-
- 10:33Sam Silvers: I've taught her everything she knows.
- 10:34Logan Newsom: Yeah.
- 10:34Similar situation to what we do.
- 10:36Um, you know, I, I think that, you know, the CDT deal, like we talk about that,
- 10:42and kind of our rule of thumb in growing up was always, like, any time you move
- 10:45them to fresh dirt, you know, hopefully you got those, those animals from
- 10:50someone that has a good vaccine program.
- 10:52Most breeders, you know, if not all, you know, are obviously taking care
- 10:55of that, and, um, those things have probably had, you know, their initial
- 10:59one and then probably a booster, you know, maybe at some point.
- 11:01That's kinda what we try to do.
- 11:03But we still always, like, we'll CDT them whenever we get them in, and then
- 11:05kinda like what you said, like some sort of internal/external parasite program.
- 11:10Um, we do different things as far as, you know, kind of our cocci treatment.
- 11:14Um, we do have, like, a medicator, you know, so that's something that, you
- 11:18know, at various points, whether it's, um, what we try to run through and kinda
- 11:24what we try to do is, you know, some sort of coccidiosis protocol in the water,
- 11:28and then, you know, we might rotate it, like, with the product, like, you know,
- 11:32that BioZyme has there to kinda always kinda put back some good bugs and, you
- 11:36know, just kinda rotate, rotate that.
- 11:38But again, I think it's one of those deals that goes back to that whole
- 11:40deal of, you know, trying to l- trying to limit our stress, you know, and
- 11:45get those things off to a good start.
- 11:47Yeah.
- 11:47Like, we've all been there, and, and it can happen to, you know,
- 11:50obviously the best families.
- 11:52Like, but it g- at the end of the day, it can happen, you know, to anyone.
- 11:54Like, if those things have a hiccup whenever you first get started,
- 11:58it seems like even if it's little, like, all of a sudden you're a little
- 12:02behind the eight ball, and you're-
- 12:03Sam Silvers: And then you're, and then you're chasing
- 12:04it ... and you're just chasing-
- 12:05Logan Newsom: You're chasing it ... the whole time.
- 12:05Like, you're just trying to get better, trying to get, you know, trying to get
- 12:08those things better and, you know, and it's almost like one of those deals, like
- 12:11when that first domino falls, like one small thing can turn into a big thing,
- 12:15and then all of a sudden, you know, we have, again, we talked about, you know,
- 12:18like, as we kinda introed this, this episode, environmental changes, like
- 12:23we're in, uh, you know, Texas Panhandle, Central Texas, you know, Southwest.
- 12:28Like, we're fixing to get into the middle of summer.
- 12:30Days are gonna be 100.
- 12:31Like, trying to keep those things cool.
- 12:33They might not eat as well.
- 12:34And so then all of a sudden, you know, what started off as maybe, um,
- 12:38an issue that could've been treated with three days of medication or, you
- 12:43know, a, a good, good practice early on- Here we are, and, you know, those
- 12:48things get skinny, and you're just like, "Dude, we're, we're in trouble.
- 12:52It's summertime, it gets hot, they're not eating great." And then you're
- 12:55fighting that all summer long, and it seems like you can't ever catch
- 12:58up until, like, almost the fall.
- 13:00Like we, you know- Yeah ... we've kind of ran into those situations before.
- 13:03Sam Silvers: And I, I think this is, this is the point, too, when you get home, that
- 13:07you need to have a really good established relationship with a veterinarian.
- 13:12Logan Newsom: Absolutely.
- 13:12Sam Silvers: A small ruminant ve- veterinarian, one that
- 13:14knows small ruminants.
- 13:15'Cause this is where it's gonna come, come key, because there's so many
- 13:18things out there not labeled for sheep and goats, and you just have to
- 13:22have a, a really good veterinarian.
- 13:25Logan Newsom: Yeah, a good relationship.
- 13:27And that's the deal.
- 13:27And like we're fortunate, you know, like we live in areas where, you know,
- 13:32veterinarians are, are available, especially on, you know, small ruminant
- 13:37side, and, you know, guys that maybe not necessarily are, like, as in tune with
- 13:42maybe sheep, but like, you know, they've been around livestock, large animal stuff.
- 13:47Yeah.
- 13:47You know?
- 13:48And I know that probably some of our listeners, 'cause we've got some of
- 13:50those families that, you know, they run into that deal of like, okay,
- 13:53you know, and this is obviously stereotypically speaking, but like
- 13:57bigger cities, like, you know, small animal clinics are on every corner,
- 14:01but like getting any assistance from someone that knows something about
- 14:05maybe large animals can be challenging.
- 14:07So, you know, we have some of those families that, you know, might be in
- 14:10some of those areas, and I'm like, "Hey, call this guy. I know he's, you know,
- 14:14three hours away from you, five hours away, whatever, but like we've gotta
- 14:17have a relationship with some sort of, you know, um, you know, vet that can-
- 14:24Mm-hmm ... that can help us kinda get through some of those situations."
- 14:26Because even, you know, me personally that feel like I've seen as many issues
- 14:31that can go wrong, sheep and goats, you know, from lambing all the way through
- 14:35the show world, you still run into those deals of like, "What is going
- 14:39on here?" Like, how can I... You know, I've done this and I've done that.
- 14:43And even it's s- good just to, like, have dialogue with those guys, you know?
- 14:46Sam Silvers: Absolutely.
- 14:47Logan Newsom: Like, "Hey, this is what I'm seeing." Like, and
- 14:49just, you know, different ideas.
- 14:50"Hey, will you try this?" Or, "Hey, we're using this, you know, medication
- 14:53a lot on respiratory issues and having great success." Something I hadn't
- 14:57thought of, something I hadn't heard of.
- 14:58Maybe it's something new, you know.
- 14:59Have a good relationship with those guys.
- 15:01Like it's- Yeah ... imperative.
- 15:02A-
- 15:02Sam Silvers: and we're probably gonna... You know, I know as we go
- 15:05through this, we're gonna make some suggestions on some products, um, that,
- 15:09that we use and work great for us.
- 15:11Uh, but the number one thing is, is, and I'll caution the
- 15:14audience, is don't just go do it.
- 15:16Consult your veterinarian first-
- 15:17Logan Newsom: Absolutely.
- 15:18Sam Silvers: Yeah ... be- before we, before you do anything.
- 15:20Um, I, I think it's imperative that we s- we say some of the products
- 15:24on here that we're gonna use.
- 15:25Um, but always consult your veterinarian first before you do anything.
- 15:29Logan Newsom: I like to joke with our families, and I say this,
- 15:31you know, 100% in a joking manner that, like, I'm a practicing vet.
- 15:36The state of Texas just doesn't recognize it.
- 15:38Sam Silvers: Yeah.
- 15:39You know?
- 15:39Logan Newsom: Like we see enough things that, uh- You know, sometimes some of
- 15:42those vets might actually probably, you know, have some dialogue with me
- 15:46and be like- Right ... "Wait, you saw what?" Yeah, but the state of Texas does
- 15:49not recognize me, so please make sure and contact your local veterinarian-
- 15:53Sam Silvers: Local veterinarian
- 15:53practice.
- 15:54So let- let's drill down on some of those products, right?
- 15:57Um, whi- which seems common to us, but it might not to others.
- 16:00So CD&T, why are we, why are we giving them two cc's of
- 16:04CD&T when we get them home?
- 16:06Logan Newsom: Yeah, so that's a, uh, you know, that's a... And I, I
- 16:09think CD&T is, is kind of a funny, um, you know, vaccination practice.
- 16:15I remember growing up and showing, and, like, our protocol at the
- 16:19beginning of every month was we gave CD&T and we dewormed them.
- 16:23So monthly we gave that.
- 16:26And I would say personally, we've, we've kind of gotten away from that.
- 16:31Um, that was maybe a Papa K deal that, you know, he just, he just
- 16:34always did and so that, you know, that's what we did for a long time.
- 16:37But now I would say our practice is probably maybe every 60
- 16:44to 90 days on a CD&T booster.
- 16:47Um, again, you know, we talked about that early on, like, that is a, that is
- 16:52a vaccination for sheep and goats that your, your breeder probably did early on.
- 16:57Mm-hmm.
- 16:57Um, personally, what we try to do is we hit the ewes before they lamb, um,
- 17:03so that hopefully some of that can be passed along in the colostrum or
- 17:06in the milk, and then we'll hit those lambs whenever we usually tag and...
- 17:11Or I guess not tag, but, you know, whenever we band
- 17:13tails, mark sheep, whatever.
- 17:14And then we'll usually hit them again whenever, you know, we
- 17:17kind of call it our booster.
- 17:18Hopefully, you know, kind of in that, I'd say 45 to 60 days, maybe kind
- 17:22of pre-sale timeframe, whatever.
- 17:24And so those sheep and goats have hopefully had at least two shots.
- 17:28Yeah.
- 17:29I mean, that's pretty standard, I would say, across the board.
- 17:32And then we try to come in, again, like I said... And Papa K used to always
- 17:36say anytime you move them to new dirt.
- 17:38You know, I know that, and I'm not gonna sit here and act like I'm, you
- 17:42know, Clostridium perfringens, you know, expert, but it is a, you know,
- 17:46bacteria that, that can be, you know, in the dirt, and so in the soil.
- 17:50And so any- I always tell those families whenever they take one home, "Hey,
- 17:53they've had two shots. Go ahead and hit them with a booster. Just kind of
- 17:57cover your bases there." It's easy.
- 18:00It's cheap.
- 18:00Cheap.
- 18:01It's just such a good, like- Yeah ... safety net.
- 18:03Like, because CD&T is one of those that's very unique.
- 18:07Like, there's no, "Hey, I think they might have CD&T."
- 18:11Like, they're either there or they're dead.
- 18:14I mean, that's- Yeah ... the reality.
- 18:15Like, it happens- Yeah ... fast.
- 18:16It's not something you can necessarily treat.
- 18:19Um, it's just something that, you know, kind of comes on, comes on quick.
- 18:22And then obviously, you know, the tetanus piece that's in, that, that's would be
- 18:25the T in that, in that particular vaccine.
- 18:27So that's, you know, I guess, a little bit of the why.
- 18:31You know, not diving too far into it.
- 18:33Obviously, anyone can- You know, Google and kind of, you know- Yeah ... get
- 18:36you some knowledge on, you know, that particular d- disease or, uh-
- 18:40Sam Silvers: For the pre- prevention of tetanus and clostridial- Prevention,
- 18:43yep, yep, yep ... type bacterias that, that can really affect them.
- 18:45And, and I think probably help ward off, um, some subclinical acidosis.
- 18:53I think we see a lot of that in, in the summer times when we're feeding them high
- 18:57grain loads and we're trying to push them, um, and we mask it with other things.
- 19:01You know, uh, they might get the, the feed scours or something- Sure ... and
- 19:04we, we write it off as, "Oh, it's cocci," or, "It's this or that," when it may
- 19:08just be a little subclinical acidosis.
- 19:10Logan Newsom: Yep, yep.
- 19:12Yeah, so like that's, you know, that's kind of one of the ones, and I would
- 19:14say if we were talking just vaccines for sheep and goats, like that's
- 19:19probably like the main one, you know?
- 19:20Yeah.
- 19:21Um, something that we've done as of late, and again, you know, I, I felt like this
- 19:26episode was definitely one that we'll probably reference it multiple times, talk
- 19:29to your vet, see what works in your area.
- 19:31We've been doing the nasal vaccination.
- 19:32Mm-hmm.
- 19:33And I think that's kind of helped.
- 19:34We talked about respiratory there early, and what we try to do is we
- 19:37do it, uh, again, you know, kind of going back to that on the breeding
- 19:40side of it, we try to do it to those babies whenever we mark tails.
- 19:43But as those sheep have come in and those goats have come in, that's
- 19:48been something that we've also kind of utilized in our program.
- 19:51'Cause I think the hard part that we deal with in the Texas Panhandle in,
- 19:55in this time of the year, and it's, it's always, you know, I would say from
- 20:00March till, you know, probably kind of the end of May that we kind of fight.
- 20:04And I know other parts of the world, you know, in the country it can be
- 20:07similar, but we might be 95 and then cold front blows in, or, you know,
- 20:14it gets cool at night, but we just have these constant swings in temps.
- 20:17Swings.
- 20:18You know, and it's, and it's 40, 40 degrees sometimes.
- 20:21And so, you know, we all know kind of how, what that can lead to,
- 20:24you know, as far as especially s- the, you know, ruminant animals.
- 20:27Yeah.
- 20:28And so respiratory deal for us is, like huge.
- 20:32I mean, it's just, it's a constant battle.
- 20:34It's something that we constantly kind of fight this time of year.
- 20:36Once we kind of level off, we get into the summer, seems like things might
- 20:39kind of, you know, clear up a little.
- 20:41But like, again, we talked about it, you know, kind of the stress, the
- 20:44new environment, all the things that, you know, can go into that and play
- 20:47that role, and then all of a sudden, you know, you put those animals...
- 20:50You know, let's say I bought one from you, maybe y'all have been warmer,
- 20:53you know, a little more kind of even keel as far as the weather goes.
- 20:56I take them to Plainview and, you know, we wake up one morning, it was
- 21:0095 yesterday, and all of a sudden it's like, oh, hey, it's gonna be 37.
- 21:04Yeah.
- 21:04You know, so the stress that that can kind of, you know, how, and how that can impact
- 21:07those things, it, it, it can be tough.
- 21:09It can be challenging.
- 21:10We've all had them, you know, like you come out there and like kids had set that
- 21:14sheep up the night before, life's good, everything looks good, and that thing's
- 21:16like thumping and sick the next morning.
- 21:18You're like- Yeah ... "Damn, we got a problem."
- 21:20Sam Silvers: So we, we gave them the CD&T.
- 21:22Um, I, I don't...
- 21:25Are, are you, are you a proponent of, of giving an antibiotic- As
- 21:29a prevention if they're not sick?
- 21:31I, I wanted to ask you that question.
- 21:33I-
- 21:33Logan Newsom: We don't
- 21:34... Sam Silvers: I typically don't.
- 21:34Logan Newsom: Yeah, we don't.
- 21:35I mean, I'm more, you know, probably in, in that aspect, you know, kinda going back
- 21:40to that, you know, reactive, proactive, whatever on, on the antibiotic side, like
- 21:44I'm gonna, I'm gonna wait, you know- Yeah
- 21:46and kinda see just, just so that, um, you know, kinda get those things in.
- 21:51And I think also because, like we might give them, you know,
- 21:54let's say like a Dectomax, something for internal parasites.
- 21:57We've given them a CDT shot.
- 21:58We deworm them.
- 21:59We've kinda already like hit those things with a couple different things,
- 22:01so I'm just kinda like, "Yeah, let's, let's wait, and let's just kinda make
- 22:04sure they're, you know, eating good."
- 22:06Now, if we see something we don't like or that things maybe, you
- 22:09know, cousin has his ears down, acts like he doesn't feel good, you
- 22:12know, then we're gonna jump on it.
- 22:13But we're probably not as much on the antibiotic deal of giving something
- 22:19as- Yeah ... soon as they come in.
- 22:21Yeah.
- 22:21Sam Silvers: Um, so w- we gave him that vaccination.
- 22:25Um, w- we've, we've gave him like a Dectomax or an Ivomec injectable
- 22:30for some internal/external parasites, things like that.
- 22:34Um, we're probably gonna hit him with some kinda other wormer too, I would
- 22:39say, maybe like, um, a Safeguard or a Valbazen or a Cydectin, something like
- 22:46that to get some of those internals.
- 22:48And then, and then we wanna, we wanna alternate those monthly, right?
- 22:52Right.
- 22:52They need to be- Sure ... wormed every month.
- 22:54I think that that's key, uh, for a lot of things.
- 22:57And then we start talking about things like, like heel mites and stuff like that.
- 23:02Um, there's a million different techniques out there.
- 23:05Um, y- you know, something that we do, um, is we, we like to put, um, m- we
- 23:14like to put the, the Ivomec pour-on on their heels to, to try to get those heel-
- 23:18Logan Newsom: Do you just, like, put that in a spray bottle?
- 23:20Sam Silvers: Like- No, we just put it on there with our hands.
- 23:22We'll get them on the stand.
- 23:23We just kind of- Just kind of- ... pour it on there on the back of their heels.
- 23:26Um, and then we'll just kinda rub that in, let it set a while.
- 23:28And we may do that for three or four days in a row just to try to get as much
- 23:33heel mites, 'cause it seems like when you lose that hair right around that,
- 23:38y- you know, right around their heel or their hoof line, it's hard to ever get
- 23:42it back, and it just looks kinda weird.
- 23:44Logan Newsom: Well, and I think
- 23:45as we talk about that and, you know, and you kinda hit on it a little bit,
- 23:47like obviously, you know, we're trying to manage that because, you know, the
- 23:52leg wool deal is, is, is a, is a thing that we, you know, are paying attention
- 23:56to and trying to be aware of, you know?
- 23:58And, and so early on, and I always joke with people, like sheep are stupid,
- 24:02but I, I don't believe that they just wake up one day and think, "I would
- 24:05like to chew off all of my leg wool."
- 24:07Yeah.
- 24:07Like, while you're at school and this leg wrap came off or, you know, you're
- 24:11at work, I think I would like to just eat this show side front leg to the bone.
- 24:15Right?
- 24:16There's a reason for that.
- 24:17Yeah.
- 24:17There's a reason that they did it, um, not just 100%, you know,
- 24:21because of their intelligence level.
- 24:22And so the reason, you know, might be that there was something there that was
- 24:26obviously bothering them, and then it kind of becomes, you know, just this,
- 24:29you know, 100% this domino effect.
- 24:30And so, you know, for the listeners out there, we're, you know, we kind
- 24:33of, as we kind of talk about, you know, external parasites and what
- 24:36we're, what we're talking about in that capacity is, you know, why those
- 24:39things might be trying to mess with their legs- Yeah ... chew, et cetera.
- 24:43Sam Silvers: So from that point, we, you know, we've got them vaccinated
- 24:46and we've got them dewormed.
- 24:47We- we've, we've looked at this hill mite issue.
- 24:50Um, to, to me it's about, y- you know, getting them hungry and
- 24:54keeping their immune system in check.
- 24:55You, you talked about having a, um, y- uh, what do you call, a medicator- Yeah
- 25:02... which we, we have a medicator in our barn.
- 25:03It's something that we didn't do until last year, but I, I think it's the best
- 25:07300 bucks I've ever spent in my life.
- 25:08Sure.
- 25:09Um, Dosatron one to 128.
- 25:13Um, y- you know, if we're having some cocci issues or something
- 25:16like that, we can dose some Corid through it, or we can run some
- 25:19sulfadimetox- dimethazine through it.
- 25:22Um, but the big thing to me is, is I like running some Liquid Boost through there.
- 25:26Yeah.
- 25:26Um, I, I think Liquid Boost is a great product for as far
- 25:29as just gut health, immunity.
- 25:31It's got some B vitamins in it, zinc, biotin.
- 25:34Anytime an, a sheep or a goat is under stress, they're gonna get some of that.
- 25:38If they get an antibiotic shot, if they're sick, whatever, I'm gonna give them some,
- 25:42some Liquid Boost, or I may, I may pulse it through that medicator for, you know,
- 25:47a week, come off, go on another week without it, maybe come back another week.
- 25:53Uh, I think that's important.
- 25:54Logan Newsom: Yeah, and that's, and that's like the same thing we do in, in, and, you
- 25:56know, we talk about the Liquid Boost and, you know, um, obviously Sam, you know,
- 26:00gets paid to give, you know- ... Bio-Zyme and Durafirm the plug, but I don't.
- 26:04Um, Alan, feel free to reach out if you'd like to sponsor.
- 26:08Um, but, but the Liquid Boost deal is, is something that we
- 26:11really, really, um, we believe in.
- 26:13And, and again, I think it kind of goes back, you know, we talked
- 26:16about that on the medication side, like our medicator is running with
- 26:19something in it at all points.
- 26:21Not necessarily always, you know, quote-unquote medication.
- 26:24If we're, if we're running some Corid or some sulfa or maybe even some of, you
- 26:28know, the powdered linco, some of the different things that we do, I always try
- 26:31to follow that up immediately with, you know, the Liquid Boost or the concentrate.
- 26:35I know you said that, you know, you use the, the red one, Liquid Boost.
- 26:38Mm-hmm.
- 26:38We use the- Hydro Boost ... Hydro Boost, the concentrate and the blue one.
- 26:41Um, but I also think, and this is just a, an observation that I've noticed
- 26:46and I've always wanted to put like a water meter on our, on our medicator.
- 26:50When we're running Hydro Boost, I feel like they drink more.
- 26:53Like I don't know if there's a flavoring in there or they're, maybe they're just
- 26:56feeling good or whatever it is, but like, it always seems like when we're running
- 27:01that, and this is just me noticing on the, on the medicator, you know, and
- 27:05how fast, you know, whatever is, you know, whatever product is going down.
- 27:09When Hydro Boost is in there- They're drinking more Yeah.
- 27:11Yeah.
- 27:12That's probably something y'all put in there to sell more of it.
- 27:14Absolutely.
- 27:15It has to be a new-
- 27:16Sam Silvers: It's trade, trade secrets right there.
- 27:17Trade secrets, yep.
- 27:18Um, so do we, do we wanna talk about cocci?
- 27:21And, you know, that's something I feel like we all face, and y-
- 27:25you know, what, what do we...
- 27:27what do y'all do at Newsom Livestock for, for prevention of cocci, to treat cocci?
- 27:31I know there's a, there's a million different things out there that
- 27:34people do that, that work, right?
- 27:36Um, I, the biggest one is, again, talk to your veterinarian.
- 27:41Um, something for us at home is, is we're big on making sure that rumensin is in...
- 27:47It's not labeled for sheep, it's labeled for goats, I know that, but to me rumensin
- 27:51is key to, to really stopping, uh, cocci.
- 27:55A- and the best way that it was described to me is, this has been years ago, is
- 28:02rumensin will kill cocci at any point in the life cycle, or stop it at any point.
- 28:08Whereas some of those other ones, it, it'll only hit it at a certain
- 28:12stage in the life cycle of cocci.
- 28:14Hmm.
- 28:15So that's why rumensin's, to me, is important having it in the diet.
- 28:18Logan Newsom: Yeah, and, and you know, that's obviously a, you know, a product
- 28:21that's, that's big in our world, big in the sheep and the goat world.
- 28:24You know, again, you know, maybe whatever you call that, extra label, off-label,
- 28:27you know, however you wanna, you know, kinda, kinda talk about it or go about it.
- 28:31Um, so obviously a product that's in, you know, the, the, the feed.
- 28:35It's already mixed in.
- 28:36So, you know, if you're, if you're listening out there, that's not
- 28:39something you go and buy off the shelf.
- 28:40That's not something you go to your feed store and ask them, you know, where,
- 28:43where they're keeping their rumensin.
- 28:44Yeah.
- 28:45Um, but yeah, cocci to me, and what we see, is probably one of
- 28:50the most challenging... Gosh.
- 28:54Um, cocci to me is probably one of the most challenging things that I
- 28:58think we face and our customers face, especially during the summer and maybe
- 29:03while those animals are developing.
- 29:05Or, you know, you talk about rumen development and, you
- 29:07know, just things like that.
- 29:08But just as they're growing, as they're developing, and I think the
- 29:11thing that I probably see that can be the most challenging is maybe
- 29:16originally you think about coccidiosis and you think bloody scours.
- 29:21Like, that's always kind of been a, you know, a thing that, you know,
- 29:24people kind of correlated with.
- 29:26What I've noticed and what we've seen is like, and I call it low-grade cocci,
- 29:31it seems like they might not have to be scouring, and they could have just
- 29:36enough that's almost like pulling on that animal to where they're not thriving.
- 29:40And I think we see that a lot in the sheep and the goat world, especially
- 29:44it seems like maybe during kind of the summer months or maybe right
- 29:47after you got those animals, right after you got them on feed, whatever.
- 29:49It seems like maybe just some low-grade cocci.
- 29:52They're eating, they're not scouring, they appear that they're healthy and
- 29:57everything's good, but, like, you can just tell they're not thriving.
- 30:00Yeah.
- 30:01And like, again, this is just my personal opinion, but like- I feel
- 30:04like sometimes you can go and you can handle those sheep, and, like, if
- 30:08they're muscle shape, if they're a sheep that, you know, we went through that
- 30:11whole checklist, we bought the good one, we bought the one that we want.
- 30:14If they're muscle shape or they're, like, stifling butt cheeks, you
- 30:18know, like, you feel like, "Hey, that thing's just not, like-"
- 30:21Sam Silvers: Almost like they're kind of melting
- 30:22Logan Newsom: or- Melting, yeah, like it's just one of those- Wasting ... yeah,
- 30:24like almost like wasting away, and you kind of just look at them and
- 30:27you're like, "Dude, I screwed up."
- 30:29Like, "What is wrong with this thing?" 'Cause we get that call a lot like, "Hey,
- 30:32this thing looked legit when I got him.
- 30:34I gave a gazillion dollars for him, and he's just not doing it." And, like,
- 30:39they'll bring him to the house, or maybe I'll swing by, or they'll send
- 30:41me a picture, and I'm like, "Where are we kind of at on our cocci protocol?"
- 30:44"Well, oh, he doesn't have the scours. No, he's fine." Yeah.
- 30:47"All right." It's maybe something that's just, like, pulling just a little bit
- 30:51to where it's like, again, you know, kind of talk about that, like they're
- 30:54just not doing what you want them to do.
- 30:56And I think, I think that, again, that's where the relationship with
- 30:59the veter- veterinarian comes in-
- 31:00Sam Silvers: Absolutely
- 31:01because it, it doesn't cost a whole lot to, to bag some of that up and
- 31:05take it in and get a stool sample.
- 31:07I will, I'll, I'll still do that.
- 31:08If something's not right at my house and I'm kind of going through
- 31:11that, I'll pack it up, run it up, and, and we'll look, "Okay, what's
- 31:14our cocci load look like?" Yep.
- 31:16And y- you know, that, that's a good indicator to tell
- 31:18you what's going on there.
- 31:20Um, so we- we've gone through that.
- 31:23We've talked about Rumensin.
- 31:24We've talked about some Corid in there.
- 31:26We've talked about- Corids, sulfas ... sulfas, sulfas, um, things of that nature.
- 31:30Um, there's some other compounded stuff that you can get from vets
- 31:34that's like Toturazil and vitamin E and stuff like that to mix.
- 31:39It works really good, but I think the prevention and making sure
- 31:42that we get cocci out early is really important to a good start.
- 31:46Logan Newsom: Absolutely.
- 31:47Yeah, that's, that's something, again, you know, we, we hit on it
- 31:49now, you know, for a little while.
- 31:50Like, it's just one of those things that can, that can put you behind-
- 31:55Sam Silvers: Way behind
- 31:56Logan Newsom: from the get-go, and then you are playing catch-up, chasing,
- 31:59you know, the whole time, and it can be, it, it is, like, it's frustrating.
- 32:02Like, we've, we've all been there.
- 32:04We've all seen it.
- 32:04Like, it can be so frustrating because you did, you bought one of those things
- 32:07that you feel good about, and then you get home, and it's like, "What is going on?"
- 32:11Yeah, and we're, we're dealing with it.
- 32:12Sam Silvers: I mean, we're dealing with it right now.
- 32:14We've had this, this rain come through and set in, and that seems like when we
- 32:17see it, we've had these wet days forever.
- 32:20Um, y- you know, glad we got the rain, but it, it does make it hard on-
- 32:24Challenging It makes it very challenging.
- 32:26We're back after a slight tinkle break.
- 32:29Logan Newsom: Yeah, yeah, no, um, I, I felt like that was a good time to
- 32:32take a break because, like, you know, we'd been so serious, coccidiosis
- 32:36and medications and everything, and obviously you got a little more of, like,
- 32:40you got a relaxed feel about you now.
- 32:41Yeah.
- 32:41Like, you thought, "I'll just lean back in this chair, and I'll just grab this mic."
- 32:45You kind of look like, like a different version of Eminem whenever he- ... you
- 32:48know, is on stage, like- You know, grab the mic and, like, shout out.
- 32:52I think you're supposed to tilt the mic up, though.
- 32:54Sam Silvers: Yeah, I don't think I'm gonna do that.
- 32:55Logan Newsom: You don't, you don't feel like that?
- 32:56Okay.
- 32:56All right.
- 32:56And I think that's a good time, like, okay, so we've been, like, super
- 32:58serious, like, on this, you know, first part of this episode just...
- 33:01Y- and it is.
- 33:02Like, it's obviously... It's important stuff, like, you
- 33:05know, health of that animal.
- 33:07We've- we've- we've wrote, you know, the check.
- 33:09We've paid, you know, money for this thing, and, like, getting it home, so,
- 33:12like, the health of it, like, it is.
- 33:13It's, like, one of the most critical times.
- 33:16Let's, let's lighten the mood a little.
- 33:18Okay.
- 33:19Let's talk about how you halter break your sheep with rope halters.
- 33:22Sam Silvers: So this is n- no rope halters, only chain.
- 33:26Um, this is where the tears and cussing really comes in.
- 33:30Logan Newsom: Fact.
- 33:30Sam Silvers: Um, but I wanna, I wanna add on there, like, right quick before
- 33:33we get into that 'cause we went, we went through all the little stuff.
- 33:36We really didn't talk about environment, and, and I think it's important
- 33:39for the viewers to know that you don't have to have the Taj Mahal-
- 33:44Logan Newsom: Absolutely
- 33:45... Sam Silvers: to feed good sheep-
- 33:45Logan Newsom: Good point
- 33:46... Sam Silvers: and win.
- 33:47As long as it's clean, right, it's got good air flow, especially for
- 33:53those summer months, and you can keep 'em warm in the winter- Yep
- 33:57you're fine.
- 33:58Yep.
- 33:58You don't have to have the Taj Mahal.
- 33:59You don't have to get... Hot take, you don't have to get into a measuring
- 34:03contest with your neighbor on his barn.
- 34:05Logan Newsom: Absolutely.
- 34:06I remember, uh, one of those families whenever we first got started, um, it
- 34:10was a wooden lean-to shed, you know?
- 34:14And, like, the, the wood part was the feed room.
- 34:17Um, you know, it was older than all of us combined, had three
- 34:21pens made out of Gebo's panels.
- 34:23Yeah.
- 34:24And, uh, hey, they were, like, pretty successful.
- 34:27They're actually one of those families that has, like, eight of
- 34:30those H trophies in their house now.
- 34:31Sam Silvers: Ours, ours growing up was a lot like that.
- 34:33Usually had to, like, fight off a rattlesnake every morning-
- 34:36Logan Newsom: Yeah, from time to time
- 34:36' Sam Silvers: cause they were gonna be under the feed room or something.
- 34:38Logan Newsom: Yeah.
- 34:39Yeah.
- 34:39Yeah.
- 34:39Good, good, good point.
- 34:40Yeah.
- 34:41Clean, um, I know you guys are, like, you know, dirt in your pens.
- 34:45Mm-hmm.
- 34:45Um, we're shavings in ours.
- 34:47Like, either, either one is obviously fine.
- 34:50Like, you know, each one, you know, probably has its
- 34:52advantages and disadvantages.
- 34:54Sam Silvers: So, but, but let's, let's talk about that for just a second, right?
- 34:57So your, your barn is probably a little more, I would say a little
- 35:02more closed in than my barn.
- 35:04Yep.
- 35:04But I, I see the reasoning behind that because of where you live, constant high
- 35:09winds in the spring, stuff like that.
- 35:12I, I mean, it, it, it kinda needs to be that way a little bit, whereas
- 35:16ours is completely open to the south.
- 35:19We get a nice south breeze all summer.
- 35:22Um, we don't do shavings because typically they'll just blow plumb out of there.
- 35:25Logan Newsom: Be gone.
- 35:26Sam Silvers: Uh, we sweep or rake the pens down every Sunday.
- 35:29Um, that works for us in our environment.
- 35:32Logan Newsom: Yeah, ours is, you know, again, you know, kind of, you
- 35:35know, our environment, climate based.
- 35:37Ours is a little more closed off.
- 35:38You know, h- uh, ventilation in the Texas Panhandle is usually not a big deal.
- 35:42We've usually got, you know, the 40 mile an hour ventilation-
- 35:45Yeah ... um, fan going.
- 35:46And, uh, at the same time, like when we get into, you know- Cooler fall,
- 35:51obviously winter, like we have to be a little more closed off 'cause we can't...
- 35:55You know, that's what we talked kind of about that, you know, as far as, uh, you
- 35:58know, our swings in temp. Texas Panhandle, it's probably gonna freeze every night.
- 36:04Yeah.
- 36:04So, you know, or at least get pretty, pretty close to kinda, you
- 36:07know, like that 32-degree deal, and so we close everything down.
- 36:10You know, we have heaters.
- 36:11So different areas, different setup, both of them obviously very functional.
- 36:16Yep.
- 36:17Okay.
- 36:17Um- That's, that's good.
- 36:18Sam Silvers: Okay, so halter breaking.
- 36:19Logan Newsom: Yeah.
- 36:21Sam Silvers: What do we-
- 36:22Logan Newsom: The fun
- 36:23... Sam Silvers: the fun, right?
- 36:24Um, and it's, it's really not that hard.
- 36:28Halter breaking to me is really not that hard.
- 36:30It seems like, um, at our setup at our house, you know, our, our, our show barn
- 36:35and where we treadmill and, and do boots, uh, it- it's probably, I don't know,
- 36:42what, 50 yards away to the other barn.
- 36:45So they get halter broke and, and broke to lead pretty easily because we're
- 36:49gonna be taking them over there quite a bit, at least a couple times a week, y-
- 36:53you know, doing, trying to do boots and leg wool on them and stuff like that,
- 36:56or weighing them and tracking weights.
- 36:58That's where our scales are.
- 36:59Logan Newsom: Wait, so do you think that you spend more time halt- like,
- 37:03this is obviously past halter breaking.
- 37:05Do you think that you spend more time walking your sheep, getting
- 37:07out, getting them out of the pen, laying eyes on them, kids actually
- 37:12putting hands on them because you have a good leg wool exercise regimen?
- 37:16Sam Silvers: 100%.
- 37:18Logan Newsom: Interesting.
- 37:19Hmm.
- 37:19Sam Silvers: 100%.
- 37:20We... Yeah, that... We'll get into that, too.
- 37:23Um, but typically what we'll do is we'll, we'll halter them things up, and we'll tie
- 37:28them to the fence in their pens, um, with their heads up, um, not try to choke them.
- 37:34Kids usually will set in there on a bucket or something, get them used to them.
- 37:37That's the initial halter breaking process, just getting them used to
- 37:40having that on their head, um, where they're not just sucking back on the
- 37:44fence, jumping around, falling down.
- 37:46Uh, if they do, uh, one of, one of the kids or myself or Jeree's there
- 37:51to, to prevent anything happening.
- 37:53But I would say the first, like, I don't know, maybe four or five days,
- 37:58let's just say a week, the first seven days is just them tied to the fence.
- 38:02Logan Newsom: Tied to the fence, yep.
- 38:04Yeah, same deal.
- 38:05That's what we do.
- 38:06Um, we have the benefit, you know, at our house that not everyone has, we
- 38:10have Cub- Yeah ... so we can tie him to the fence, and then Cub probably
- 38:14has, you know, like a sorting flag in his hand, and he's, like, running
- 38:17through Dennis the Menace style.
- 38:19So that, uh, that kinda gets a lot of the, you know, let's say piss
- 38:23and vinegar out of those things- Sure ... rather quickly, so.
- 38:26But yeah, tie them to the fence, stand there, let them get used to it.
- 38:29And I think we talked about it, you know, on the last episode, again,
- 38:32that rope halter versus chain halter, like this is a g- you know, where we
- 38:36talked about the benefits of that.
- 38:37Like, they can fight that chain, but it's like gives them just enough of
- 38:42some tension there that they're like Hey
- 38:44Sam Silvers: That hurts
- 38:45... Logan Newsom: that hurts.
- 38:45I can't get away from that.
- 38:46Where that rope deal, not only can they pull on it, but kinda like what
- 38:49you hit on, like, they can actually cinch it down so tight that we
- 38:53could run into some other issues.
- 38:54Sam Silvers: Yeah.
- 38:55So then, then we talk about w- we've kinda got 'em broke to that halter, now we
- 39:00wanna start teaching 'em to lead, right?
- 39:03And this sounds really basic, but w- what do you do there at Newsom Livestock?
- 39:08Yeah,
- 39:08Logan Newsom: um, it is, and ours is, ours is b- ours is probably pretty basic.
- 39:12Uh, kids get 'em out, and we head down the road, you know?
- 39:16And again, you know, kinda jokingly, but we might have Cub
- 39:20with a sorting flag behind 'em.
- 39:22Um, and it is, like, it- let's be honest, it's a pain in the ass to start with.
- 39:27It's not hard, it's just a pain, you know?
- 39:29Mm-hmm.
- 39:30Like, and I think one of the things that I probably yell at the kids
- 39:33about as much as anything is they just take off, like dragging them and
- 39:38pulling them, and then they're just so confused on why they won't follow 'em.
- 39:43Yeah.
- 39:43And I'm like, "Dude, walk beside 'em. Let it kinda be their idea. Let's-"
- 39:48Sam Silvers: Or let 'em go ahead of you if you want to
- 39:50... Logan Newsom: let 'em go ahead of you.
- 39:50Sam Silvers: Like, let's, let's outsmart the sheep or the goat.
- 39:53Logan Newsom: Like, let's not just drag them.
- 39:55Yeah.
- 39:55So we probably have to kinda have some daily reminders of
- 39:58that with my two children.
- 39:59I'm sure everybody else that's listening is probably better from that standpoint.
- 40:03But yeah, let those things kinda, let it kinda be their idea.
- 40:05Like, let 'em kinda take off, and it's amazing how all of a sudden, you know,
- 40:09things start working and coinciding.
- 40:12And it's so much easier, and, and I, and I'm not gonna sit here and
- 40:16say that I haven't been this person, but, like, it's so much easier
- 40:19to do this- When they're young
- 40:21when they're young, when they're little, than, uh, when they're bigger.
- 40:25Or, like, "Hey, let's go jackpot that thing." Like, as a stock show
- 40:29dad, we've been there, we've done it, and like, you're having to drag that
- 40:32thing to the scales at like 7:45 in the morning, and you are pissed off.
- 40:36Sam Silvers: Uh-huh, 100%.
- 40:37So w- we're getting 'em, we're getting 'em hand broke, and, and I think that's
- 40:41the time, too, that like, um, before we let everyone, uh, let any of those sheep
- 40:45go as they're tied to the fence, we'll get the kids to kinda just walk 'em.
- 40:49This is early in the process, right?
- 40:51The kids will walk 'em around in the pen.
- 40:53In the pen, yep.
- 40:53In the pen, and then they'll set all them sheep up before we let 'em go.
- 40:57I'll, I'll have 'em-
- 40:58Logan Newsom: Yeah
- 40:58... Sam Silvers: set 'em up, brace 'em to the best of their ability, 'cause
- 41:01they're, they're not trained yet.
- 41:02They don't know everything.
- 41:04But they will set 'em up and brace 'em before they let 'em go.
- 41:07Logan Newsom: Yeah, and again, like we said, it's so much easier to get
- 41:09all that done when they're little.
- 41:10You know?
- 41:11Sam Silvers: Yeah.
- 41:11Logan Newsom: Those things are 60, 70 pounds.
- 41:12And it's easier, like, it's easier on the kids, you know?
- 41:15Like, because it's not a, "Hey, that thing's 120 pounds, let's,
- 41:18let's teach him to show or, or, you know, teach him to walk."
- 41:22Like, you can c- they can kinda manhandle 'em.
- 41:23No matter how big they are, they can kinda manhandle 'em and kinda get 'em going.
- 41:26And I think it also kinda works to where those two start kind of forming,
- 41:30like, a relationship, you know?
- 41:32Like-
- 41:33Sam Silvers: A bond
- 41:33... Logan Newsom: a bond.
- 41:34Sam Silvers: Kinda like the bond you and I have.
- 41:36Logan Newsom: Yeah, like where you, you sometimes wanna punch me in the nose?
- 41:39Sam Silvers: Forged in fire.
- 41:40Logan Newsom: Whoo.
- 41:41I like that.
- 41:41We should put that on a T-shirt.
- 41:44Okay, so we've got those things.
- 41:45We got them haltered.
- 41:46Again, I think that's a good point, too.
- 41:47You don't have to immediately walk outside of the pen.
- 41:50If you got room in the pen, especially like, you know, ours are not as big as
- 41:54yours are, but, like, they're 8 by 20s.
- 41:57Um, yeah, walk those things just like in a circle, you know?
- 42:00Like, just kind of walk them over to lead them or, or, you know, walk them over to
- 42:04set them up, whatever that looks like.
- 42:05A few circles.
- 42:05Few circles, yeah.
- 42:06Yeah.
- 42:06Kind of just makes it to where you can avoid the, "Oh my gosh, Dad,
- 42:09I let that thing go," and he's running down the keletchi road.
- 42:11Sam Silvers: And this is where w- w- we're kind of getting into our,
- 42:13our, our next little segment here.
- 42:15Um, this is where we start building that routine, if you will.
- 42:19Logan Newsom: Absolutely.
- 42:19Sam Silvers: Right?
- 42:20A- and that kind of sets the, to... in my eyes, sets the precedence for,
- 42:24for the rest of the year, right?
- 42:26Um, because I think routine is key to successfulness.
- 42:30Logan Newsom: Yeah.
- 42:31I can get behind that.
- 42:33Sam Silvers: So we're, we're doing that, right?
- 42:35And this is when we're gonna start integrating, like, our, our leg regiment.
- 42:39Um, maybe we start getting them on the... Y- you know, you may be different
- 42:44than me, but we'll start getting them on the track at a pretty early age.
- 42:47If it's just once a week, it's a light breezing, yeah, everything's
- 42:51skinny at this point, but we still get them broke to the track.
- 42:54We get a little bit of exercise.
- 42:55I think that's important, 'cause I, I look at these things as, as athletes.
- 42:59Logan Newsom: Yep.
- 43:00Sam Silvers: A- and, you know, a professional athlete works
- 43:02out every day, no matter what.
- 43:03Logan Newsom: Yep.
- 43:03Sam Silvers: Um, a- and I, I think it's kind of like a bell
- 43:06curve to me a little bit, right?
- 43:08They might kind of start going down a little bit in terms of, like,
- 43:11condition and fleshiness, but then they're gonna start catching up, right?
- 43:15Yep.
- 43:15Their body's gonna catch up with what they're doing.
- 43:16They're gonna start metabolizing everything.
- 43:19That's when we start getting it.
- 43:20Um, but again, routine, right?
- 43:23We get them on the track maybe once a week, trying them out.
- 43:26We're gonna get them on the treadmill once a week just to get them used to it,
- 43:29'cause fighting them, fighting a 170-pound lamb on a treadmill is a nightmare.
- 43:34Logan Newsom: For the birds.
- 43:36Sam Silvers: Yeah.
- 43:36Logan Newsom: You know, and I think that's just... It's exactly the same
- 43:38way as the halter breaking deal, right?
- 43:39It's, like, so much easier to teach them early, so much
- 43:41easier when they're younger.
- 43:42You know, on the track, we obviously utilize, you know,
- 43:45a, you know, a track dog.
- 43:46Um, it's kind of that same deal.
- 43:48Like, it's easier to get those things broke to that and scared of that dog
- 43:52and get all of that out of the way.
- 43:54If you do need to do a little stitching or sewing or-
- 43:57Sam Silvers: Mm-hmm
- 43:57... Logan Newsom: you know, cosmetic work there, like, it's better to get all that
- 44:00done and out of the way, as opposed to, "Oh, hey, that sheep weighs 140 and he's
- 44:06fleshy and I need to be tracking him."
- 44:09Doesn't work.
- 44:09Sam Silvers: No.
- 44:09Logan Newsom: Bad idea.
- 44:10Like, it just absolutely doesn't work.
- 44:11Like, I don't care.
- 44:12I'll leg wrestle anyone that argues with me on that.
- 44:15Sam Silvers: So your, your leg regiment, I would assume, is a lot like ours.
- 44:18I've been to your place, and I, I've seen your wash rack area and stuff.
- 44:22W- we have, like... I don't know.
- 44:24Uh, so our pens are set up different, but typically we'll feed
- 44:29four to five head per pen, right?
- 44:31A- and that's what we call a group.
- 44:33So i- in our wash bay area, we have five tables set up, um, a-
- 44:39and we'll do a pen at a time.
- 44:40So we take a pen over there.
- 44:42We'll put You know, four to five on the stands in there.
- 44:45Um, that's where we kinda start teaching them to jump and all that stuff, slowly
- 44:50and surely building that routine where we're not having to pick 'em up when
- 44:53they weigh 140 to get on the stand.
- 44:55By, you know, by November, we can lead in there and, you know, kinda
- 44:59like a horse- Yeah ... kinda click 'em and then they'll jump right up.
- 45:02Um, we'll do our leg wool regiment, which I, I don't... I would assume
- 45:06that's probably gonna be a whole nother episode on just leg wool stuff.
- 45:09Probably.
- 45:09But- That's something, yeah,
- 45:10Logan Newsom: we'll have- Um
- 45:10to dive into that.
- 45:11Sam Silvers: Um- Typically what we do is, is like we'll, we'll start
- 45:15their leg wool, you know, we'll, we'll rinse, condition, blow, all that stuff,
- 45:19and then, uh, we'll jump 'em off.
- 45:22We'll run 'em across the treadmill, um, maybe run 'em across the
- 45:26scale, our scale's there.
- 45:27We have a big whiteboard in there.
- 45:29We track weights.
- 45:30Uh, right now we just kinda track weights once a month, but we'll
- 45:33get to where we track 'em weekly.
- 45:35Um, and then we jump 'em back up, and that's when we finish
- 45:38blowing, wrapping, all that stuff.
- 45:41Logan Newsom: I've noticed, um, obviously being in your barn, you
- 45:43know, multiple times, and, like, it is... Like, you've got the big
- 45:45whiteboard there, and I think this is a interesting take, like, you know,
- 45:48whether people weigh often or don't weigh.
- 45:52And, and you obviously are, you know, pretty religious about y'all's,
- 45:56y'all's scale management there.
- 45:57Do you weigh yourself as often as you weigh your sheep?
- 46:01Sam Silvers: No.
- 46:02Oh.
- 46:02I should, though.
- 46:03Logan Newsom: I was just... I was curious.
- 46:04Sam's got a board that's, I don't know, like, 10 by 20 I feel like.
- 46:09I think that- It is huge, and he-
- 46:11Sam Silvers: 4 by 8 maybe
- 46:12Logan Newsom: weighs, weighs I would say very, very
- 46:15religiously throughout the year.
- 46:17We're on the other side of that.
- 46:18I don't weigh very often.
- 46:20Um-
- 46:21Sam Silvers: Yeah, I noticed that the other day
- 46:22... Logan Newsom: personally either.
- 46:23Um, but, like, we weigh when we go to a show, and I guess I just... I,
- 46:28I probably wish that... Excuse me.
- 46:32I probably wish that we did weigh a little bit more 'cause I'm...
- 46:35I would be interested to see, like you said, and I think that brings up a good
- 46:38point, just tracking them, especially, like, this time of year, like, making
- 46:41sure those things are gaining, making sure they're growing, making sure
- 46:43they're doing what we want 'em to do.
- 46:44So I think it's a very, very good tool.
- 46:47We personally don't do it as often, but at the same time, you know, we,
- 46:52when we start jackpotting, I guess that's when I'm usually like...
- 46:54'Cause I do keep everything on my phone, and I'm like, "Okay, he weighed this,"
- 46:57and then, you know, three weeks later we took him out and he weighed that.
- 47:01Yeah.
- 47:01I don't know.
- 47:01Inter- dif- different, different strokes for different folks I believe is the term.
- 47:05Sam Silvers: I guess I, I like looking at it too because I've noticed a trend over
- 47:09the past, like, three or four years is, like, we have these steady gains kinda
- 47:13through the summer, and then it seems like every time about, like, October,
- 47:19November, when, when the weather finally starts cooling down where we live,
- 47:25that's when you start getting huge jumps.
- 47:27Logan Newsom: Yeah, big jumps in 'em.
- 47:28Sam Silvers: A- and now I know that, hey, October- ... November we're fixing
- 47:32to start seeing some serious gains here, and we might need to start dialing some
- 47:36of these back or doing something, right?
- 47:37'Cause they're gonna start- Y- you know, I have some that'll jump
- 47:408, 10, 12 pounds in a month- I th- ... and you're like, "Oh my God"
- 47:44Logan Newsom: I think that's the part that, you know, if you're listening and
- 47:46you're, you know, curious about, you know, making your program better, I think
- 47:49that's the part that everyone has to keep in mind, is it's, it's different in
- 47:54different parts of the country, right?
- 47:56Because for us, when it starts getting cold in the Texas
- 47:59Panhandle, like, our stuff's done.
- 48:01Now, we're fortunate up here because we might be 100 degrees middle of the summer
- 48:07during the day, it's gonna be 71 at night.
- 48:10Like, it's amazing.
- 48:11Yeah.
- 48:11You wanna sit out on the patio, you wanna sit out on the patio, you know,
- 48:16in the evenings or early part of the mo- you know, in the mornings.
- 48:19I mean, until 10:00, 11:00, we might not turn fans and porti-cools on.
- 48:23So we catch a lot of our grow and our gain, and I mean, you've been to the
- 48:26house and you've seen it, you know, like, you know, sometimes like, oh my
- 48:29gosh, your state fair sheep are like-
- 48:31Sam Silvers: Huge
- 48:31... Logan Newsom: blowing through the... But like, at some point there,
- 48:34when it starts getting cold and things cool down, like, we're done.
- 48:38I remember a couple years ago, we had a sheep that I was worried about.
- 48:43You know, like, I thought he was a little big, a little big, and I knew
- 48:45he was probably gonna be, like, one of our Houston options, and I think
- 48:47between Thanksgiving and Houston, he gained, like, five pounds.
- 48:50You know, he just kinda got there and he was done, but we started
- 48:52getting cold, things kinda shut down.
- 48:54So it can vary depending on where you live.
- 48:57Again, we kinda talked back about that, you know, the environment
- 48:59and, you know, different situations, different settings, whatever.
- 49:02So just because maybe you're ahead or you're behind where maybe somebody
- 49:07else is at that time, like, think about where your environment is.
- 49:10Like, okay, I know I'm gonna catch up whenever we get to the s-
- 49:15fall, you know, that's whenever- Yeah ... our stuff really kinda takes
- 49:17off, or this or that or whatever.
- 49:19So keep that in mind if you're a listener, you know, and you're kinda thinking about
- 49:22that, like, "Oh man, that, that seems like that might not work in my area."
- 49:25Might not.
- 49:26Your- Yeah ... your situation might be different.
- 49:27Okay, so you kinda hit on that just a little bit and, and we kinda, you know,
- 49:30went off on the weight kick or whatever.
- 49:32Um, talk about that, kinda that initial treadmilling.
- 49:35You said run 'em across the treadmill, kinda what that looks like, you
- 49:37know, for those guys that might be, um, you know, just learning or, you
- 49:42know, kinda what your, you guys' routine in Junction there looks like.
- 49:45Obviously, you don't jump 'em on and go 100- Four times ... for
- 49:49five minutes right out of the gate.
- 49:50Sam Silvers: Yeah.
- 49:51So, um, typically we'll just kinda jump 'em on there, um, get 'em in position,
- 49:58and then we may just start 'em out on one of the lowest speeds there are,
- 50:02uh, one to two minutes, and that's it.
- 50:05We're, we're not really trying to f- to fix anything or do anything,
- 50:08we're just getting them used to it.
- 50:10And then we slowly, I would say over a month, we slowly
- 50:14start building that up, right?
- 50:16Build the speed up, that kinda thing.
- 50:18Um, and, and you're gonna find out, too, and I think you've found this too,
- 50:21there's, there's some of those sheep and goats that are really coordinated.
- 50:25Logan Newsom: Sure.
- 50:26Sam Silvers: Uh, I mean, they, they're gifted with an athletic ability, I think
- 50:30And, and there's some that just aren't.
- 50:31They're just-
- 50:32Logan Newsom: Kind of like humans
- 50:33... Sam Silvers: dumb.
- 50:34Logan Newsom: Yeah.
- 50:34Oh, also kind of like humans.
- 50:35Sam Silvers: Yes, very.
- 50:36Logan Newsom: That's interesting.
- 50:37Sam Silvers: Um, so start slow.
- 50:38Logan Newsom: The Lord says that we're like sheep.
- 50:41Sam Silvers: Yes.
- 50:42Start slow, build up.
- 50:44Um, that's... A- and again, establishing that daily routine.
- 50:48I- so I'm gonna ask you this question.
- 50:50How important do you think it is to have that daily routine, feeding at
- 50:55the same times, things of that nature?
- 50:58Logan Newsom: I think you know the answer to that because you've been around me,
- 51:01and, you know, I'm pretty punctual, and when I mean that, like, if I need
- 51:08to do it at 8:00 AM on Tuesday, it's probably gonna get done by Thursday.
- 51:13Yeah.
- 51:13Not so much in the feed barn.
- 51:15I'm probably like... That's probably where I am maybe just a
- 51:17little more, uh, punctual than I am, you know, in other aspects of
- 51:20my daily life, like all of them.
- 51:22Um, but yeah, like we, we try to have a routine, you know, like we're not,
- 51:26um, the guys that feed, like, with the chickens because I don't like, I don't
- 51:32like waking up as early, but we try to have a routine, you know, feeding
- 51:37Sam Silvers: Yeah, but what, what I'm getting at is it, if
- 51:39it's 9:00 AM, it's probably gonna be 9:00, 9:00 PM- Yeah, yeah
- 51:4210:00 PM, something like that.
- 51:42Logan Newsom: Yeah, definitely.
- 51:43So like, and I think you kind of naturally fall into that routine.
- 51:46Like, we try to have everything fed in the show barn by 8:30 because whenever
- 51:52kids get out of school, we get done with our routine in the evenings,
- 51:55whatever that looks like, ball practice, all the different things, like it's
- 51:58probably really and truly gonna be like 7:30 to 8:30 before we feed again.
- 52:02Like, it's just kinda what works.
- 52:04Like, we're not gonna feed at 6:30 or 7:00, like everybody's still scattered,
- 52:08everybody's still doing stuff, and I think that routine kinda naturally
- 52:12just falls in line with what your family schedule looks like, and so
- 52:16that's just kinda where ours hits.
- 52:18I know some families it'll, you know-
- 52:19Sam Silvers: It's different for everybody.
- 52:20Logan Newsom: Yeah, yeah.
- 52:21They, they feed... Maybe the kids feed, you know, before they go to school.
- 52:24Um, mine are lucky enough that I like them enough that I guess I feed
- 52:28for 'em in the mornings, and then, um, you know, then they do... Like
- 52:31Graham's deal is the feed board.
- 52:32Like, he does all the, all the mixing and Joe pours it out.
- 52:36Like, that's kind of our little routine at the house.
- 52:38Like, you know- So- ... it took me a little while to make sure I could help
- 52:42him with fractions because that was definitely something we probably like,
- 52:46you know, scoops and fractions and, you know, what a half is and what a third is.
- 52:51Um, but yeah, that's kinda their deal and that's kinda what it looks like
- 52:53by the, by the time you get d- they get done, and I think the same thing
- 52:56kinda falls in line with that routine deal, whether it's exercise, whether
- 53:01it's, you know, treadmilling- Mm-hmm
- 53:03whether it's leg day.
- 53:03Like, you have to kind of find what fits.
- 53:05And it... And we're all busy, right?
- 53:08Every kid's involved in stuff.
- 53:09Parents are busy.
- 53:10It's the life we live, like fast-paced.
- 53:13We, we, we can talk about it till we're blue in the face, but, like,
- 53:16you gotta just kinda find what works.
- 53:17I always tell people, like, if, you know, you can...
- 53:20If you need to track those things three days a week, I'm not telling you it has to
- 53:23be Monday, Wednesday, Friday That sounds great, and you can write that on paper,
- 53:28and you can pretend that that works.
- 53:31Sam Silvers: It's probably not gonna happen.
- 53:32Logan Newsom: Yeah, things come up.
- 53:33There- yeah, there's, there's some of those that we might, we might go Tuesday,
- 53:36and then we might go Saturday, Sunday.
- 53:38Like, that's just what fits our deal.
- 53:40Sam Silvers: And I think th- I think the routine, it, it, and, and you
- 53:44pick the times that you want to, but I, I think it's really important
- 53:47'cause I see this at, at my house.
- 53:49It- when they're younger because let's say that we have a day that, like, we-
- 53:54let's just say we've been feeding at, like, 8:00 and 8:00, 8:00 in the morning,
- 53:578:00 in the evening for a few weeks, and something happens, comes up, and then
- 54:02we had to feed, we had to feed at, you know, 8:00 in the morning and at 10:00
- 54:05at night, that's when we see some stuff.
- 54:08Like, they're gonna- they might crap out on us, or they'll go out on- they'll,
- 54:12they won't eat the next morning.
- 54:14So it, it's important, I, I think, that when, when you set that routine
- 54:18and you get it, try to stick to it.
- 54:19And, and I do realize that things come up, things happen, you know, there,
- 54:23there's ball, there's this, there's that.
- 54:25Um, but the one thing that I've always said is this isn't just a kid project.
- 54:31It's a family project.
- 54:32Absolutely.
- 54:32And it takes an army, right?
- 54:34Yep.
- 54:35Like, like if, if, you know, if, if Graham's gotta go to ball practice
- 54:38and, and JB's taking him to ball practice and y- you know, Gracie Jo's
- 54:43doing something else, then, you know, you're probably gonna have to pick up
- 54:46the slack and make sure they get fed sometime between 8:00 and 9:00, right?
- 54:49Or it- so you just gotta... That's how we manage it, right?
- 54:53Yeah.
- 54:53That's how we eat the elephant, if you will.
- 54:55Logan Newsom: Well, and that's, and that's how it has to be.
- 54:56And like, if you're not in this, and like, as a parent, I mean, I can
- 55:00sit here, and I will, I will tell you, if you're not willing to help
- 55:03the kids, and- It's not gonna work
- 55:05Sam Silvers: it's not gonna work.
- 55:05Logan Newsom: Like, it's not.
- 55:06Like, th- this is, this is their project, you know, to help them and
- 55:11grow and do and all the things, but like, you have gotta be involved in
- 55:14it from the beginning to the end.
- 55:15And you know, we've got a, we've got a few families we, I think are, are
- 55:18learning that, but like at first it was just like, "Oh yeah," you know.
- 55:22And, and, and their families, I wouldn't say, are maybe as, um, invested.
- 55:28Like, it's kinda just like, "Oh, we wanna do this." And not, not
- 55:32taking anything away from 'em.
- 55:33I think they just haven't realized, like, hey, this is a deal that,
- 55:36like, we've all gotta be involved in.
- 55:38And there's good and bad with that, right?
- 55:39Like, you can win together and lose together and fight together and all that,
- 55:43but like, it's a, it also, you hear it all the time, like whenever families graduate,
- 55:48like, and you know, some of the dads all of a sudden wanna get like sentimental,
- 55:50and like, "Man, I'm gonna miss, you know, all the screaming and yelling, and
- 55:55now all of a sudden the barn's quiet"
- 55:56Sam Silvers: Yeah
- 55:56Logan Newsom: and all this stuff.
- 55:57But yeah, I mean, you just gotta kinda fit, you know, kinda
- 55:59back on that routine, though.
- 56:00You kinda kinda find, find what works.
- 56:02And I think I thought about something while you were saying that, and I
- 56:05think it ties in with that routine.
- 56:08And you know, I, I kinda poke a little fun at Graham and his, you know, fractions
- 56:11and ability to, you know, look at a can and realize what, you know, a third is.
- 56:15I also see- Some differences in like those animals aggress- aggressiveness to
- 56:21eat or maybe just, you know, you talked about like maybe some of them getting
- 56:24a little loose in terms of, you know, their stool or, or anything like that.
- 56:28If Graham hasn't been feeding for like three or four days, like if he's been gone
- 56:31or something, and then I've been feeding, and then all of a sudden, like we both
- 56:35have been looking at the same board, but then all of a sudden, like he comes back.
- 56:39I'm not saying that he was right and I was wrong or vice versa, but there
- 56:43was a little bit of difference there.
- 56:45Sam Silvers: Yeah.
- 56:45Logan Newsom: Maybe his can is a little heavy.
- 56:47Maybe his-
- 56:47Sam Silvers: Jurahee's quarter is a little different than- Yep ... Sam's quarter.
- 56:49Logan Newsom: Absolutely.
- 56:50And so like you wanna find some consistency and some routine there.
- 56:53Like if there's five of you guys, like I would not recommend, you know, "Hey, it's
- 56:58your turn to feed, and then I'll feed tonight, and then the next kid feeds, you
- 57:01know, the next morning." Like somebody kinda needs to be the one that's probably
- 57:03doing majority of the scooping there.
- 57:05Sam Silvers: Yeah.
- 57:06Yeah.
- 57:06So we, we've... I, I think it's about time to probably
- 57:09start wrapping this episode up.
- 57:11Yep.
- 57:11We, we've, we've talked about unloading them at the house.
- 57:14We've talked about our, our vaccination protocol, keeping them things
- 57:18healthy, uh, keeping them on feed, building a routine, halter breaking.
- 57:23Um, we're starting our leg regiment.
- 57:25We're kinda starting our, our exercise regiment, if you will.
- 57:28Um, so y- you know, that to me, that's kind of a good place to s- I would
- 57:33say start wrapping up this episode.
- 57:35Logan Newsom: Yeah, no, that's, uh... I mean, we're, we're
- 57:37in a good spot, you know.
- 57:38If you think about our, you know, our kind of our, our visual project here that
- 57:41we've kinda built up in our, in our heads and, you know, that have... as listeners
- 57:45are driving down the road, you know, they're maybe kind of visualizing also.
- 57:48I think when we kinda wrap that up, you know, and we kinda
- 57:51talk about it, like, and we...
- 57:53as we're entering into, you know, maybe those summer months and,
- 57:56you know, obviously we're gonna continue and, um, talk about, you
- 58:00know, summer prep and k- kind of how that, kinda how that goes through.
- 58:04Real quick, and just, you know, the first thing that comes to mind, what
- 58:09do you think the biggest mistake a family can make the first...
- 58:12We've, we've kinda hit on this, you know, the first seven days.
- 58:15What's the biggest mistake that you see or that you have to maybe try to
- 58:18caution families to make that could potentially go wrong first seven days?
- 58:23Boom, what is it?
- 58:25Sam Silvers: Oh, man, that's a tough one, 'cause I think there's a lot of things.
- 58:28Um-
- 58:28Logan Newsom: Leaving the gate open?
- 58:30That could be a big deal.
- 58:31I had this family the other day that like came and they bought a couple of sheep,
- 58:35and one of them was like, "He was really, really good. He was a little expensive."
- 58:39And they left the gate open, and they had to go hunt them through the woods.
- 58:43For a later episode, I'll tell you guys who it was, 'cause everybody knows him.
- 58:47Sam Silvers: Hmm.
- 58:47I had one one time, uh, jump out, and they had a mountain behind their house.
- 58:52And, uh, they were gone.
- 58:54Never caught them again.
- 58:55Logan Newsom: Never?
- 58:55Sam Silvers: Never.
- 58:56Gone.
- 58:56Logan Newsom: Gone.
- 58:57Dude, that-
- 58:57Sam Silvers: Till this day, they are still roaming the mountain somewhere.
- 58:59Logan Newsom: He's still out there?
- 59:00Sam Silvers: He's not still out there.
- 59:01Unless a hunter got him.
- 59:01I guarantee he's...
- 59:02Yeah, he's gone.
- 59:02Um, I, y- I don't know.
- 59:04Biggest mistake?
- 59:06I don't... Dumbassery.
- 59:07Logan Newsom: Yeah.
- 59:08Sam Silvers: Can I say that?
- 59:09Logan Newsom: Yeah, you can.
- 59:10Sam Silvers: It's a, it's a real thing.
- 59:11Just, I mean, pull your head out.
- 59:13Pay attention.
- 59:14Watch.
- 59:15When you get done feeding in the evenings or you go out in the morning,
- 59:19take two minutes and walk the pens, make sure everything's eaten, make
- 59:23sure nothing doesn't have its head down or his ears down in the corner.
- 59:26Uh, y- you know, make sure water buckets are filled up, make sure they're clean.
- 59:29It's just simple, basic animal, what I would call animal husbandry skills.
- 59:34Logan Newsom: Absolutely.
- 59:35Sam Silvers: Yeah.
- 59:36A- and it's gonna... Yeah, just don't, don't do dumb stuff.
- 59:39Dumbassery.
- 59:40Okay.
- 59:40No, it's a real thing.
- 59:41Dumbassery, yeah.
- 59:41Like, it's a, it's a, it's, it's for sure.
- 59:43Logan Newsom: The one thing that I tell people and, and, you know, we're,
- 59:46what we feed, and I just think this is, like, the first thing that comes to mind
- 59:49when I think about that is, you know, those things have been on the pink bags
- 59:51the whole time, like, whenever they're little, and then all of a sudden people
- 59:55go and boom, they just change everything.
- 59:58Sam Silvers: Was that a plug there?
- 59:59Logan Newsom: Nope- Oh ... because they haven't sponsored anything.
- 1:00:01So I'll, I'll let you guys know who actually owns the pink bags at some point,
- 1:00:04but for now it's just the pink bags.
- 1:00:06But yeah, like, just, like, change feed, you know, new environment, like,
- 1:00:09all this stuff, just, like... And expect those things just to take off.
- 1:00:12Like, I, I think that probably actually falls, if we looked up dumbassery, I think
- 1:00:16that kinda also falls in line with that.
- 1:00:17Like-
- 1:00:18Sam Silvers: Yeah
- 1:00:18... Logan Newsom: think, just think through some things just a little bit.
- 1:00:20Like- Just a little bit.
- 1:00:22Yeah.
- 1:00:22Make it easy.
- 1:00:22This game's hard.
- 1:00:23Like, and you always tell the kids, like-
- 1:00:25Sam Silvers: But if you do-
- 1:00:26Logan Newsom: Some shit's hard and you make it harder.
- 1:00:27Sam Silvers: E- exactly.
- 1:00:29If you do have a question, you can go to drenchline.com- Submit
- 1:00:32it ... and plug that in there and submit it and we will answer it.
- 1:00:34We love to answer.
- 1:00:34You might not like the answer, but we'll answer it.
- 1:00:36Logan Newsom: We will certainly answer it.
- 1:00:37Okay, so that kinda wraps, uh, episode four.
- 1:00:40We've got our, we've got our, we've got our sheep, we're on
- 1:00:43feed, we're rocking and rolling.
- 1:00:44We've got a routine going.
- 1:00:45Um, we've walked 'em across the treadmill.
- 1:00:47Sam's weighed him 17 times now so far.
- 1:00:50And, uh, yeah, we're, we're, we're ready to kinda get into our summer prep and
- 1:00:54start thinking about what those things are gonna grow out like, maybe, you
- 1:00:56know, kinda hitting a few jackpots, all the different things that can go in.
- 1:00:59So, um, Sam said it, drop us a line.
- 1:01:02Uh, any questions that you guys might have, submit 'em.
- 1:01:06We'll try to, we'll try to catch 'em.
- 1:01:08I think this time we have one that we were gonna talk about that Abigail submitted.
- 1:01:13Sam Silvers: Yep.
- 1:01:13Logan Newsom: And she was curious, as we kinda roll into this, and I
- 1:01:16think it kinda ties into what we're gonna talk about, you know, as we move
- 1:01:19through episodes, summer jackpots-
- 1:01:21Sam Silvers: Yeah
- 1:01:22Logan Newsom: and drenching.
- 1:01:23Sam Silvers: Yeah.
- 1:01:23Logan Newsom: Obviously, a, a
- 1:01:24big deal on the Drench Line podcast.
- 1:01:27Whenever
- 1:01:27Logan Newsom: you go to a summer jackpot, what does that look like
- 1:01:29as far as your drenching protocol?
- 1:01:31I know in the last episode we talked a little, if you hear that
- 1:01:34I'm going to the jackpot, you know, you, you go into super prep mode.
- 1:01:38Sam Silvers: Mm-hmm.
- 1:01:38Logan Newsom: I mean, you are full bore, like fitting legs.
- 1:01:42Sam Silvers: By God, I am.
- 1:01:42Logan Newsom: I mean, Tim's gonna be there, like, blue ribbons on.
- 1:01:45Sam Silvers: Yeah.
- 1:01:45Tim's there.
- 1:01:46Logan Newsom: I mean, it's, it's wide open.
- 1:01:47Now-
- 1:01:47Sam Silvers: Going, going for the throat.
- 1:01:48Logan Newsom: Going for the throat.
- 1:01:49Yep.
- 1:01:49Yep.
- 1:01:50Um, Medina Meltdown 25, four for four, just-
- 1:01:54Sam Silvers: Four for four
- 1:01:54... Logan Newsom: just the, uh, you know-
- 1:01:55Sam Silvers: Just put the whoop on them boys
- 1:01:57Logan Newsom: I, I believe they call that BTA is what Michael Irvin says.
- 1:01:59But, um, yeah, what's that look like in a summer jackpot and what does
- 1:02:02your drench protocol look like as compared to maybe what you might
- 1:02:06do in the spring in a major show?
- 1:02:08Sam Silvers: Yeah.
- 1:02:08So, um, I think, Abigail, I think that's a great question.
- 1:02:12Um- Me personally, for jackpots, it, it's hot, it's in the summer, um,
- 1:02:18they're young, we're still trying to get their guts lined out, we're
- 1:02:22trying to get everything right.
- 1:02:23I am not a big proponent of drenching with a bunch of stuff while at a jackpot.
- 1:02:29Typically what we do, hay, feed, and water at jackpots.
- 1:02:33That's what we're big on.
- 1:02:34Now, if I'm there and one, I am really losing one, I can tell that he's stressing
- 1:02:39hard, just doesn't look right, I might add some electrolytes in there, something like
- 1:02:43a Resorb or, or, or something like that.
- 1:02:45But I typically do not drench with anything at jackpots.
- 1:02:50It's hay, feed, and water.
- 1:02:52Yeah.
- 1:02:52Logan Newsom: That's, uh... We're the same deal.
- 1:02:54We, we do Dyne water.
- 1:02:55Like, I'll, I'll, I'll put a little of what I call, you know,
- 1:02:57like a dollop of Dyne in there.
- 1:02:59I think it, you know, you kinda get a little sugar-
- 1:03:00Sam Silvers: Little energy
- 1:03:01... Logan Newsom: little sugar, a little energy.
- 1:03:03And it ma- and it kinda sweetens it up, so they maybe kinda drink a little more when,
- 1:03:05when you're on the road, not the show.
- 1:03:07I do try to, um, at some point, and it usually happens more probably, like,
- 1:03:13at our fall fairs, I try to start kinda figuring out how those sheep or goats
- 1:03:18will react to maybe what we're gonna do-
- 1:03:20Sam Silvers: Sure
- 1:03:20Logan Newsom: in the spring.
- 1:03:21You know, kinda, you know, start off with, like, our base drench, and
- 1:03:23I'll, you know, I won't go, like-
- 1:03:25Sam Silvers: Crazy
- 1:03:25... Logan Newsom: three or four days out like we would at, you know, a major show.
- 1:03:28But, like, if we're gonna show on a Saturday, you know, Thursday evening I
- 1:03:31might start 'em on a little bit, just to kinda see, 'cause I think that can
- 1:03:33be important, 'cause we've seen each one of those, like, one, you know,
- 1:03:37they react different, but some of 'em, you know, they might, like, gas up and
- 1:03:40kinda air up on you, and, you know, just kinda have, you know, like, kinda that
- 1:03:42full, sloppy look, and so you're like, "Okay, that didn't really work great."
- 1:03:45So we do do that a little bit more, but that, again, is, you know, probably
- 1:03:49later on in the year, fall fairs, shows that maybe it's gonna be, like, an
- 1:03:53overnight deal where we're unloading them and, you know, you kinda get
- 1:03:55into a little more of that, you know-
- 1:03:56Sam Silvers: But if we're talking about these June, July-
- 1:03:58Logan Newsom: June jackpots
- 1:03:59Sam Silvers: August jackpots, I don't wanna sour their
- 1:04:01guts with a bunch of stuff.
- 1:04:02Logan Newsom: Yeah, I'm more interested in probably going and
- 1:04:04swimming than I am, like, going back for the, you know, 9:00 drenching.
- 1:04:08I don't, I don't know where you're at on swimming pools.
- 1:04:10Sam Silvers: You- You, you know I'm not gonna do the 9:00 drench
- 1:04:13Logan Newsom: No, no, you definitely don't do that, and you don't like
- 1:04:16to get in swimming pools either, so-
- 1:04:18Sam Silvers: No
- 1:04:18Logan Newsom: it's a no-fun zone.
- 1:04:20Okay, that wraps up, uh, episode four.
