- 0:00Speaker 1: On the Bechdelcast, the questions ask if movies have women
- 0:04Speaker 1: in them, are all their discussions just boyfriends and husbands,
- 0:08Speaker 1: or do they have individualism? It's the patriarchy, zephynvest start
- 0:13Speaker 1: changing with the Bechdelcast.
- 0:16Speaker 2: Hello listeners, just jumping into the top of this episode
- 0:19Speaker 2: for a reminder about our upcoming Midwest tour. We are
- 0:23Speaker 2: so excited about this. We are coming to Indianapolis, Chicago, Madison,
- 0:28Speaker 2: and Minneapolis. We have never done live shows in any
- 0:32Speaker 2: of these cities, so you simply must come. Starting with
- 0:36Speaker 2: our Indianapolis show on August thirtieth, that's a Saturday matinee,
- 0:41Speaker 2: and then later that night Jamie is doing a solo
- 0:44Speaker 2: show this is all for Let's Fest. Then the following night,
- 0:47Speaker 2: we have a show in Chicago on Sunday, August thirty.
- 0:51Speaker 2: First following that is a show in Madison on September fourth,
- 0:56Speaker 2: and then finally our Minneapolis show on September seventh. We
- 1:01Speaker 2: are very close to announcing the movies we're going to
- 1:05Speaker 2: be covering on this tour, so be on the lookout
- 1:08Speaker 2: for that. Check our Instagram. The ticket links for the
- 1:11Speaker 2: shows will also be updated shortly with the movie choices.
- 1:14Speaker 2: And speaking of those ticket links, you can access them
- 1:18Speaker 2: at link tree slash Bechdel Cast. Grab those tickets before
- 1:22Speaker 2: they sell out. We're gonna pull out all the stops
- 1:24Speaker 2: for this first ever Midwest tour that we're doing. You
- 1:27Speaker 2: don't want to miss it. We will see you there
- 1:30Speaker 2: and in the meantime, enjoy the episode the cast. Woof, woof.
- 1:36Speaker 2: I'm a dog who wants to host a podcast. Check
- 1:39Speaker 2: the rule book. It doesn't say a dog can't host
- 1:43Speaker 2: a podcast.
- 1:44Speaker 3: That's woof. So maybe just cover the podcast in all
- 1:47Speaker 3: of oil and we'll be able to host it, no problem. Yeah,
- 1:51Speaker 3: the podcast will slip right out of our mouth, corene
- 1:53Speaker 3: into the air else and slam dunk into a fully
- 1:58Speaker 3: exported at MP three file.
- 2:00Speaker 2: Oh yeah, beautiful.
- 2:02Speaker 3: Yeah, thank you so much. It's dogs can do anything?
- 2:07Speaker 3: But should they? A question that will come up much today.
- 2:11Speaker 3: Welcome to the Bechdel Cast Our. My name is Shamie
- 2:14Speaker 3: Loftus woof.
- 2:15Speaker 2: My name is Caitlin Deronte. This is our show where
- 2:18Speaker 2: we examine movies through an intersectional feminist lens, using the
- 2:23Speaker 2: Bechdel test as a jumping off point.
- 2:26Speaker 3: It feels silly, but you're you're going to be shocked
- 2:30Speaker 3: at the things that come up today. I'm still recovering.
- 2:33Speaker 3: I watched this movie three days ago and I've been
- 2:35Speaker 3: thinking about it so much.
- 2:37Speaker 2: There's a lot to say it took us.
- 2:39Speaker 3: So if you've been a longtime listener of the show,
- 2:42Speaker 3: I feel like through this conversation you'll understand why it
- 2:45Speaker 3: took us nine full years to cover this movie. We
- 2:47Speaker 3: really had to know ourselves better. We needed to know
- 2:51Speaker 3: the medium fully. Yes, we needed to have hard discussions.
- 2:56Speaker 3: We needed to develop our skills as critics and grow
- 3:00Speaker 3: as people before we could have the episode discussion that
- 3:04Speaker 3: we're going to have today. It's our Airbud episode.
- 3:06Speaker 2: Yeah, I would say that our Flubber episode walked so
- 3:12Speaker 2: that our Airbud episode could run.
- 3:14Speaker 3: Yeah, because Flubber. There's a lot going on in Flubber,
- 3:18Speaker 3: and you can listen to that episode. But I wouldn't
- 3:21Speaker 3: have been emotionally prepared to have the Weinstein brothers introduced
- 3:25Speaker 3: in the opening moments of the film five years ago
- 3:28Speaker 3: when we covered Flubber. I think I needed the time personally.
- 3:32Speaker 3: I needed to go through my Saturn return before I
- 3:34Speaker 3: could have this conversation.
- 3:36Speaker 2: Wow, yes, yes, exactly so we're covering Airbud and we're
- 3:41Speaker 2: so excited about our guests today. They are two real
- 3:45Speaker 2: life best friends and hosts of the podcast. Text me back,
- 3:49Speaker 2: it's Megan Hatcher May's and Lindy West.
- 3:52Speaker 4: Welcome.
- 3:53Speaker 5: Yay, it's true. It's us to real life best friends.
- 3:56Speaker 6: We are so excited to be here.
- 4:00Speaker 2: I have you.
- 4:01Speaker 5: We're so excited. Everything you've said about Araic Bud is
- 4:04Speaker 5: like exactly what I have written down in my four
- 4:08Speaker 5: to five pages of notes that I took while watching
- 4:12Speaker 5: this film.
- 4:13Speaker 3: There's so much going on. I well, first, okay, before
- 4:16Speaker 3: we get into it, tell us a little bit about
- 4:18Speaker 3: your podcast, because I know the conversation is going to
- 4:21Speaker 3: get quite serious very soon. Oh yes, yes, of course.
- 4:24Speaker 6: Our podcast is a very silly podcast about two best
- 4:28Speaker 6: friends who live on opposite sides of the country, and
- 4:31Speaker 6: we Megan works in politics and is very depressed, and
- 4:35Speaker 6: so on the podcast we try to have a little
- 4:38Speaker 6: bit of fun.
- 4:39Speaker 3: Yeah, love it.
- 4:40Speaker 4: And I am not a serious person, and so a
- 4:45Speaker 4: lot of the podcast is me coming to Megan with
- 4:48Speaker 4: a news story. I heard parentheses a TikTok I saw
- 4:53Speaker 4: about how there's an ice wall around Did you know
- 4:59Speaker 4: that that the is flat and Antarctica is actually an
- 5:02Speaker 4: ice wall around the rim of the Earth.
- 5:04Speaker 6: Yeah, a lot of people don't know that.
- 5:05Speaker 5: I didn't know that there previously had been a race
- 5:08Speaker 5: of human dog hybrids, which somehow proves the existence of
- 5:12Speaker 5: the flat earth ice wall.
- 5:13Speaker 2: Anyway, Well, can they play basketball? Though?
- 5:16Speaker 5: And the dog human hybrid's play basketball. We're about to
- 5:20Speaker 5: find out.
- 5:21Speaker 4: Well they can. The question of whether they can play
- 5:24Speaker 4: basketball and whether they may play basketball, right, that's two
- 5:28Speaker 4: different questions.
- 5:29Speaker 5: Okay, yes, but yeah, we've been best friends since high
- 5:31Speaker 5: school and which was twenty five years ago, twenty five
- 5:35Speaker 5: beautiful years ago. And our show is just like stuff
- 5:37Speaker 5: we think is really funny. It's really hard to describe,
- 5:40Speaker 5: but it's like when you call your best friend and
- 5:42Speaker 5: you don't really have anything on the agenda, and then
- 5:45Speaker 5: you talk for two hours and then your tummy hurts
- 5:47Speaker 5: from laughing. That's a text me back podcast guarantee. That's
- 5:51Speaker 5: right now.
- 5:51Speaker 2: Incredible, That sounds lovely and well. Unfortunately, though, if you're
- 5:55Speaker 2: looking for fun and silliness on this episode on Airbud,
- 5:59Speaker 2: you won't find it.
- 6:01Speaker 5: Think again.
- 6:02Speaker 3: Nope, the fund ends now because Meggan and Lindy what
- 6:08Speaker 3: are your personal histories with Airbud, the movie, the franchise,
- 6:12Speaker 3: et cetera.
- 6:13Speaker 5: None. I have no history. I mean, I am clearly
- 6:16Speaker 5: I'm aware of the existence of Airbud. I'm aware of
- 6:20Speaker 5: a very poorly drafted middle school basketball handbook that, by
- 6:25Speaker 5: virtue of its silence, allows dogs to play middle school basketball.
- 6:28Speaker 4: Like I'm aware.
- 6:29Speaker 5: I'm aware of the impact Arabud has had on our culture,
- 6:32Speaker 5: but I've never saw I mean, we were fifteen, fourteen
- 6:34Speaker 5: fifteen when this came out, so we're a little too
- 6:36Speaker 5: cool and old to be watching Airbud, you know what
- 6:39Speaker 5: I mean. And I figured it was just a silly
- 6:41Speaker 5: children's movie, slash franchise, slash ip, you know, because now
- 6:47Speaker 5: there's like a bunch of offshoots in the sequel he
- 6:50Speaker 5: plays football.
- 6:51Speaker 2: Apparently, one of many sequels.
- 6:53Speaker 5: Yes, something to think about. So I didn't know what
- 6:55Speaker 5: to expect going into this. I will say I was
- 6:58Speaker 5: knocked flat on my when it was revealed that it
- 7:01Speaker 5: was executively produced by Harvey Weinstein and I did not
- 7:06Speaker 5: That was a major curveball for me.
- 7:08Speaker 3: Really unpleasant.
- 7:09Speaker 5: Yeah, these things happen in Hollywood, baby, you know.
- 7:14Speaker 2: Uh, Lindy, how about you.
- 7:16Speaker 4: It did not. We were not children anymore when it
- 7:18Speaker 4: came out. I did not watch it. It was one
- 7:20Speaker 4: of those things that you're just very aware of because
- 7:22Speaker 4: it's an outlandish premise, you know, definitely a piece of
- 7:26Speaker 4: pop culture that I was. That was in my vocabulary,
- 7:29Speaker 4: but I don't think i'd ever actually seen it until yesterday.
- 7:33Speaker 4: And it really, I mean, I know, we'll get into
- 7:37Speaker 4: all this, but really contained a lot more evil clown
- 7:41Speaker 4: and a lot less basketball than I had anticipated. You know. Also,
- 7:47Speaker 4: I did not realize that this is a Pacific Northwest classic,
- 7:49Speaker 4: and it is.
- 7:50Speaker 5: I didn't know that either. Yes, and I consider myself
- 7:53Speaker 5: an encyclopedia of Pacific Northwest media. Yeah, because well we
- 7:57Speaker 5: grew up in Seattle, for the record, and so were
- 8:00Speaker 5: like ten things I hate about you.
- 8:01Speaker 4: Obviously that was more our era.
- 8:03Speaker 5: I had no idea that air Bud was a great
- 8:06Speaker 5: Seattle company. I did not know that.
- 8:08Speaker 2: So jealous, I'm so excited to talk about this movie
- 8:12Speaker 2: with you. Having kind of no background with it. I
- 8:15Speaker 2: sort of assumed that the reason you chose this movie
- 8:17Speaker 2: is because you have a deep connection to it.
- 8:20Speaker 5: No, we just thought it would be funny.
- 8:23Speaker 3: No, you're true, and that's so valid.
- 8:26Speaker 2: Yeah, Jamie, what's your history with the movie.
- 8:30Speaker 3: So I thought I could have sworn I had seen
- 8:34Speaker 3: this movie, but it turns out it was a case
- 8:36Speaker 3: of cultural osmosis. I was four when this movie came out,
- 8:39Speaker 3: so I was in fact the target demographic. So I
- 8:42Speaker 3: guess I just assumed because these movies were so ubiquitous
- 8:46Speaker 3: in the late nineties into the early two thousands, I
- 8:49Speaker 3: knew all of the like spinoff titles off the top
- 8:51Speaker 3: of my head. Now I don't wait, I got I
- 8:54Speaker 3: have to pull up There's they're all so funny. Golden Receiver,
- 8:58Speaker 3: Golden Receiver. There's one that says Airbud spikes back. That's
- 9:03Speaker 3: the volleyball one. He's basically using the basketball skills. Again,
- 9:07Speaker 3: not to criticize him, but whoa, let's be let's be serious. Also,
- 9:11Speaker 3: not the original Airbud because he died.
- 9:14Speaker 2: He died after the first one. Yeah, his final film.
- 9:17Speaker 4: Yeah, oh yeah, there.
- 9:18Speaker 3: I have a lot of thoughts about this, all right,
- 9:20Speaker 3: Airbud World Pop, Airbud Seventh Inning, Fetch No, it turns
- 9:25Speaker 3: out the movie that I did see that is somehow
- 9:28Speaker 3: involved in the Airbud Expanded universe. Because it stars the
- 9:31Speaker 3: same kid Slash eventually man Kevin Zeeker's Josh frim Is.
- 9:37Speaker 3: I was thinking, I definitely saw and owned MVP Most
- 9:40Speaker 3: Valuable Primate, which is about the chimpanzee that plays hockey.
- 9:44Speaker 3: My dad as a hockey reporter, so that was the
- 9:46Speaker 3: one that we owned. I assumed I'd seen Airbud and
- 9:49Speaker 3: I and I could have sworn this is a movie
- 9:52Speaker 3: about a dog that joins a basketball team. That is
- 9:55Speaker 3: not what happens in the movie. It is more a
- 9:58Speaker 3: serious family drama where a dog plays basketball a few times.
- 10:04Speaker 3: I was so shocked at how willing to go there
- 10:08Speaker 3: the movie Airbud. It starts there's it's like it's so
- 10:14Speaker 3: it's really special because it's like it's directed like the characters,
- 10:18Speaker 3: especially the adults, they are basically like Disney Channel adults
- 10:22Speaker 3: where they're they're very cartoonisht they're very over the top,
- 10:25Speaker 3: but they have very real world problems where it's like
- 10:28Speaker 3: the goofy villain is struggling with alcoholism and it's obvious
- 10:33Speaker 3: there is a goofy coach who turns out to be
- 10:36Speaker 3: an abuser of children. Yeah, he's just whipping basketballs at
- 10:40Speaker 3: this kid. It's just I just don't know, I have
- 10:44Speaker 3: I have so many thoughts about what's going on. There
- 10:48Speaker 3: is no real plot to the movie, except it seems
- 10:50Speaker 3: like Josh is just trying to get through this year
- 10:52Speaker 3: of his life and a dog becomes his father. Basically
- 10:57Speaker 3: is what happens.
- 10:58Speaker 2: Because his father died in exploded plane crash literally exploded.
- 11:03Speaker 4: By the way.
- 11:04Speaker 5: We find that out because Josh keeps a framed copy
- 11:08Speaker 5: of an article about how his dad died. Like, oh,
- 11:11Speaker 5: and it's not even just a picture of your dad,
- 11:14Speaker 5: it's the open joshsh Josh is unpacking his room.
- 11:18Speaker 4: They've moved to a new town. Yeah, he's unpacking his
- 11:21Speaker 4: room and he pulls out a framed newspaper article that's
- 11:26Speaker 4: like man.
- 11:26Speaker 3: Explodes and it's his dad, but not his obituary.
- 11:32Speaker 5: No, it's an article reporting the death.
- 11:36Speaker 3: Yes, Josh, like this poor kid and also one of
- 11:40Speaker 3: my favorite tropes of kids movies, disappearing toddler younger sibling
- 11:45Speaker 3: who actually becomes very important later in the franchise. She
- 11:49Speaker 3: later becomes the leading character Andrea. Well anyways, she's.
- 11:53Speaker 4: Also very important to this podcast because I believe she
- 11:56Speaker 4: might be she might be involved in the only incidents
- 12:00Speaker 4: test passing the Bechdel test.
- 12:02Speaker 5: It's true, I have I have one other I have
- 12:05Speaker 5: one other possibility, but we can get into that.
- 12:07Speaker 3: Okay, I don't.
- 12:08Speaker 4: I didn't. I didn't mean to jump ahead, but I
- 12:09Speaker 4: don't want to know.
- 12:10Speaker 3: You're fine this movie, Yeah, this is ultimately, this is
- 12:15Speaker 3: a great example of ultimately all movies are somehow about
- 12:17Speaker 3: fathers and sons, no matter what the premise is, and
- 12:20Speaker 3: air Bud is not an exception to that role. So anyways,
- 12:23Speaker 3: it turns out I did. I had not seen this movie,
- 12:26Speaker 3: and I was really I was a gog.
- 12:29Speaker 4: Yeah, it goes way harder than you expect, and it's also,
- 12:32Speaker 4: I think, way better than like this kind of movie made. Now.
- 12:37Speaker 4: I feel like it's better written, it's better acted, it's
- 12:40Speaker 4: better directed, and it would be true slop just filled
- 12:44Speaker 4: with like product placement and like like the worst pop
- 12:48Speaker 4: culture references, you know what I mean.
- 12:50Speaker 3: I agree.
- 12:51Speaker 5: There are moments of like real comedy in this movie
- 12:54Speaker 5: where I was.
- 12:54Speaker 2: Like, there's some slapstick happening.
- 12:59Speaker 3: The thing off and it looks good like the cinema.
- 13:03Speaker 3: It's colorful, it's beautiful, Like I was very I don't
- 13:08Speaker 3: know my fiance came in while I was watching it.
- 13:10Speaker 3: He's like, why does Airbud look better than like most
- 13:13Speaker 3: movies that come out now, Like, I don't.
- 13:15Speaker 2: Know, it's shot on film or something shot on.
- 13:17Speaker 3: Film, three million dollar budget, no excuses everyone, Your movie
- 13:21Speaker 3: should look at least as good as Airbud.
- 13:25Speaker 4: Practical effects. By the way, at the very end, it's
- 13:27Speaker 4: like no special effects were used. Oh yes, dog basketball sequences.
- 13:32Speaker 5: Airbud did all his own stunts, and that is so important.
- 13:35Speaker 3: He's legend.
- 13:36Speaker 5: You gotta put that down in the history books.
- 13:37Speaker 3: He's a legend. I was really and we'll talk about Buddy.
- 13:41Speaker 3: I was concerned when I was on the Wikipedia page
- 13:43Speaker 3: and Buddy had his own Wikipedia page. You're like, this
- 13:46Speaker 3: is either really good or really bad when an animal
- 13:49Speaker 3: actor has their own Wikipedia page. I was thinking about
- 13:51Speaker 3: the last animal actor we really talked about in any detail.
- 13:54Speaker 3: Caitlin was Jimmy the Raven Oh from Ember him from
- 13:59Speaker 3: from It It's a Wonderful Life and The Wizard of
- 14:00Speaker 3: Our I was like.
- 14:01Speaker 2: That Christmas movie you can't remember the name of.
- 14:03Speaker 3: It, Christmas Week, But yeah, Buddy, Buddy's life is complicated.
- 14:08Speaker 3: I feel for Buddy. We'll talk about it, Caitlyn, what's
- 14:12Speaker 3: your history with Airbud?
- 14:13Speaker 2: I am the only one who had seen this movie
- 14:16Speaker 2: before brag. I definitely watched it a couple times as
- 14:21Speaker 2: a kid. Although the dog movies that were a bigger
- 14:24Speaker 2: part of my childhood were Beethoven and Homeward Bound, Airbud
- 14:30Speaker 2: wasn't quite a staple in my house. I probably saw
- 14:34Speaker 2: it once or twice as an eleven year old, which
- 14:38Speaker 2: is how old I was when it came out. Never
- 14:40Speaker 2: saw any of the sequels, And yeah, I haven't seen
- 14:43Speaker 2: this movie in twenty five or more years, so I'm
- 14:50Speaker 2: I Also, I was remembering it, you know, not correctly.
- 14:54Speaker 2: I was like, Yeah, he joins the team way earlier,
- 14:58Speaker 2: he plays a lot more bad football with them. Yeah,
- 15:01Speaker 2: and that doesn't happen, and it's really just doing that
- 15:04Speaker 2: climactic sequence.
- 15:06Speaker 3: He's basically not on the team. I was so disappointed.
- 15:09Speaker 3: He's the mascot for us, He's a side show.
- 15:12Speaker 5: It takes a full like thirty minutes for Josh and
- 15:15Speaker 5: Airbud to even meet. Yeah, you know, he has to
- 15:18Speaker 5: like lure him out of the abandoned church with tapioca,
- 15:23Speaker 5: and then it's like it takes another hour for Airbud
- 15:25Speaker 5: to join the team, which, by the way, I'm not complaining.
- 15:28Speaker 5: It's a great movie.
- 15:29Speaker 4: It is really Okay, I want to say, I want
- 15:33Speaker 4: to push back a little bit because I think it's
- 15:35Speaker 4: actually like gorgeous restraint and artistry to not have Airbud
- 15:39Speaker 4: beyond the team. I love that. Like, this movie is
- 15:43Speaker 4: not camp. This movie is telling a serious story, and
- 15:46Speaker 4: it's not realistic for a dog to join the basketball team. Yea, yeah,
- 15:50Speaker 4: it's much more grounded to have the dog. Well, not
- 15:53Speaker 4: to spoil it, but show up at the eleventh hour
- 15:57Speaker 4: when the half the team has fouled out or been injured. Yea,
- 16:02Speaker 4: and just step in and save the day.
- 16:05Speaker 5: Right, and or moved to Spokane, right, Like the thing,
- 16:10Speaker 5: I mean, it really subverts your expectations.
- 16:12Speaker 4: Who you are thinking, is this going to be a
- 16:13Speaker 4: series of like high.
- 16:15Speaker 5: Adrenaline dog dunks, but it's not not at all the
- 16:19Speaker 5: work for it.
- 16:19Speaker 4: Yeah yeah, and he plays real basketball, you know.
- 16:23Speaker 2: Yeah with his face yep.
- 16:25Speaker 3: I was so impressed. Buddy. Uh he's he truly was
- 16:28Speaker 3: a good boy. Alrip, buddy.
- 16:31Speaker 2: Yeah, Well, let's take a quick break and we'll come
- 16:34Speaker 2: back and do the recap ur we're back, and here's
- 16:49Speaker 2: the recap of the movie. So we meet a man
- 16:54Speaker 2: who works as a clown whose act is called Clown
- 16:58Speaker 2: and a Hound because his partner is a golden retriever.
- 17:03Speaker 2: But this clown is a piece of shit who is
- 17:06Speaker 2: cruel and abusive to his dog. They arrive at a
- 17:10Speaker 2: kid's birthday party, but this clown is a flop when
- 17:14Speaker 2: he's doing his solo act, but then the kids love
- 17:17Speaker 2: it when the dog gets involved and does a bunch
- 17:21Speaker 2: of tricks with balls, and we're like, okay, check off's
- 17:24Speaker 2: ball handling skills.
- 17:26Speaker 4: That's right.
- 17:27Speaker 2: But the clown is such a flop that he ruins
- 17:30Speaker 2: the whole thing and gets kicked out of the party,
- 17:33Speaker 2: and he blames his inadequacies on his dog.
- 17:38Speaker 3: He's projecting really truly shame.
- 17:41Speaker 2: And he goes to take the dog to the pound,
- 17:43Speaker 2: but then the like crate slash dog carrier thing falls
- 17:49Speaker 2: off the clown's truck and a family happens upon the
- 17:54Speaker 2: dog crate and hits it with like hits it with
- 17:57Speaker 2: their car.
- 17:58Speaker 3: We're like, off to the race already. We know that
- 18:01Speaker 3: Airbud is in an abusive situation with a clown, which
- 18:05Speaker 3: is fascinating, and then he's almost hit by the protagonist
- 18:09Speaker 3: of the movie.
- 18:10Speaker 5: Yeah, right away, I'm so stressed out, and I'm so sad.
- 18:13Speaker 5: You know, I hate to see a dog in a
- 18:14Speaker 5: stressful situation. And here we have, you know, the so
- 18:18Speaker 5: far unnamed Golden Retriever, you know, working as like an
- 18:22Speaker 5: indentured servant to an incompetent clown. Although he's wearing the
- 18:26Speaker 5: cuticle outfit you ever saw in your life, is like
- 18:29Speaker 5: the pathos radiating off of this retriever.
- 18:31Speaker 4: I was like, I don't know if I can watch this.
- 18:35Speaker 5: What's gonna happen?
- 18:36Speaker 4: And by the way, the evil clown when he's like
- 18:39Speaker 4: he's not just taking the dog to the pound, he's
- 18:42Speaker 4: on the phone with the pound being like, yeah, I'm
- 18:44Speaker 4: bringing you a vicious, bad dog. Yeah, implying that he's
- 18:49Speaker 4: gonna have that dog executed.
- 18:50Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 18:51Speaker 3: Yes, Oh, he's trying to get Airbud put down.
- 18:53Speaker 5: He's trying to build up some receipts for the inevitable
- 18:57Speaker 5: rip ing of Airbud.
- 18:59Speaker 4: That's when it gets to.
- 18:59Speaker 5: The pound, that's right, evil.
- 19:01Speaker 4: And then yeah, the crate falls off the clown truck
- 19:04Speaker 4: and then is hit by the protagonist and then this
- 19:08Speaker 4: is the weirdest scene in the movie to me. Right
- 19:09Speaker 4: off the bat, Josh, our main boy, looks out the
- 19:14Speaker 4: window of the car sees a clown dog sitting on
- 19:19Speaker 4: the side of the road, like two feet from the car.
- 19:22Speaker 5: Josh says, nothing, nothing, no reaction, Lindy, his dad just exploded.
- 19:26Speaker 3: His dad just exploded. He's in it.
- 19:29Speaker 4: He's too depressed.
- 19:31Speaker 5: I'd be like, oh my god, a dog and a
- 19:33Speaker 5: clown cossume. He's like, I guess we'll just roll on.
- 19:36Speaker 3: There's a very David Lynchy quality to that sequence.
- 19:39Speaker 5: I was gonna say, like, because because the opening, I
- 19:42Speaker 5: have a provocative question. The opening scene is a canary
- 19:46Speaker 5: sitting on a tree branch. It's very reminiscent of the
- 19:50Speaker 5: opening credits of Twin Peaks, where the red breasted Robin
- 19:53Speaker 5: is sitting on a on a tree branch as well.
- 19:55Speaker 5: And I was and then you find out that this
- 19:57Speaker 5: is in fact taking place somewhere in the Pacific northwestutside
- 19:59Speaker 5: of Seattle somewhere, And I was like, question, is Airbud
- 20:03Speaker 5: happening in the same universe as Twin Peaks? Is this
- 20:07Speaker 5: like eight years or excuse me, like six years after
- 20:10Speaker 5: the death of Laura Palmer and here comes Airbud.
- 20:13Speaker 3: We can only hope also is.
- 20:14Speaker 4: The canary the Dad's ghost, because they they show the
- 20:20Speaker 4: canary again at the end of the movie, and I
- 20:22Speaker 4: was like, what the fuck is the significance of this bird?
- 20:26Speaker 3: I did not notice that.
- 20:28Speaker 4: It just occurred to me when you were saying that
- 20:30Speaker 4: megs for sure. It's implying. The way they use the
- 20:33Speaker 4: canary at the beginning sort of implies that this bird
- 20:35Speaker 4: is like bringing the Airbud magic to the boy.
- 20:39Speaker 5: You know what I mean, Yeah, a cosmic gift from Dad. Yeah.
- 20:43Speaker 4: I was expecting the bird to like swoop down and
- 20:45Speaker 4: give air Bud a whittle kiss on his head or
- 20:47Speaker 4: something to like any but then you find out he
- 20:50Speaker 4: was just trained by a clown to do ball stuff.
- 20:52Speaker 4: But anyway, I think the bird is the exploded Dad's spirit.
- 20:57Speaker 3: I believe it because Airbud takes on so many like
- 20:59Speaker 3: al like qualities throughout the movie. He can smell a
- 21:05Speaker 3: child in trouble like it's great, and I didn't know.
- 21:10Speaker 3: I didn't recognize this actor, but I was like, who
- 21:13Speaker 3: is committing fully to the role of Norm Snivey. And
- 21:18Speaker 3: it turns out queer icon Michael Jeter is committing fully rest.
- 21:22Speaker 4: In Power Power.
- 21:23Speaker 3: Yes, he passed in two thousand and three, but he
- 21:27Speaker 3: was like he's a character actor who was like known
- 21:30Speaker 3: as like the sweetest guy in the world. He was
- 21:33Speaker 3: in hair. He's a successful Broadway actor and he was
- 21:37Speaker 3: out for UH for much of his life. He has
- 21:42Speaker 3: and we love him for that and relevant to my interests.
- 21:46Speaker 3: At the time, he was on Sesame Street as mister
- 21:49Speaker 3: Noodle's brother Mister Noodle and those who know, no.
- 21:55Speaker 4: He also was in Sister Act too, along with the mom.
- 22:00Speaker 3: Yes, this is from.
- 22:02Speaker 5: Who I always think is Illianna Douglas, but then it isn't.
- 22:06Speaker 2: Instead it's Wendy McKenna aka Iliana Douglas was not available
- 22:12Speaker 2: and guess correct, Yes, she plays Josh's mom. Josh again
- 22:18Speaker 2: has no reaction to seeing this dog in a clown costume,
- 22:22Speaker 2: and then they just drive away, and then the family
- 22:26Speaker 2: arrives at the new house they're moving into. We've established
- 22:31Speaker 2: already the Josh's dad had died the previous year. He
- 22:37Speaker 2: was a test pilot. He exploded, and Josh used to
- 22:42Speaker 2: play basketball with his dad, but he's lost interest in
- 22:45Speaker 2: that ever since. His dad's passing, and then he starts
- 22:49Speaker 2: at a new school. His mom tries to get him
- 22:51Speaker 2: into some extracurricular activities like playing the trombone.
- 22:56Speaker 3: A lot of band kids slander, and I just I
- 23:02Speaker 3: want to say as a podcast, don't stand by that.
- 23:06Speaker 3: You know, that's more of a sure Josh's dad exploited,
- 23:09Speaker 3: but it's more of a hymn problem, I would say.
- 23:13Speaker 2: And then one day after school, Josh walks by an
- 23:17Speaker 2: abandoned church which has a crusty old basketball.
- 23:21Speaker 3: Court and one of the many religious qualities to air Bud,
- 23:26Speaker 3: there's a lot of religious imagery associated.
- 23:29Speaker 5: I have a question. I was not raised in the church.
- 23:33Speaker 5: Is it common for churches to have a basketball court
- 23:38Speaker 5: or I don't know, this is unique to this particular church.
- 23:43Speaker 3: My church had a playground, but not a not a
- 23:46Speaker 3: basketball court.
- 23:46Speaker 5: I was like, who was out of her balling when
- 23:49Speaker 5: the church was still in business.
- 23:52Speaker 3: There's one of those cool youth pastors. It's like, I know,
- 23:55Speaker 3: I'll get the kid just here.
- 23:56Speaker 5: Doing some crossover and stuff. Yeah, he's like bigee you
- 24:00Speaker 5: know it.
- 24:01Speaker 4: Yeah. To me, it's like it's you can imagine a
- 24:04Speaker 4: church having a basketball court, but this church seems to
- 24:07Speaker 4: only have a basketball court, Like there's not there's not
- 24:10Speaker 4: like a graveyard or a play structure or anything. There's
- 24:15Speaker 4: no parking lot.
- 24:17Speaker 2: No, it's just a haunted ass church with a basketball court.
- 24:21Speaker 4: Very normal.
- 24:22Speaker 2: And Josh starts shooting hoops and not to bully this child,
- 24:28Speaker 2: but he sucks at it really bad and the ball
- 24:30Speaker 2: goes flying into the bushes and then there's some like
- 24:34Speaker 2: rustling and dog sounds, but all he can find is
- 24:38Speaker 2: a scrap from the dog's clown costume.
- 24:41Speaker 3: Eventually, what they do meet, did it remind anyone else
- 24:44Speaker 3: of et like? Their meeting felt very et coded to be.
- 24:48Speaker 2: Yeah, because he's luring the creature with sweets.
- 24:51Speaker 5: Yeah, with little puddings, yeah, out of the bushes.
- 24:54Speaker 3: But then it's like just a golden retriever, no offensive buddy, can.
- 24:58Speaker 5: We quickly address? So, lind I'm so curious Lindy your
- 25:02Speaker 5: emotional state watching Airbud because Lindy herself owns a Golden Retriever.
- 25:06Speaker 5: His name is Barry Reveal or air Berry.
- 25:10Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 25:11Speaker 5: Yes, Now Barry is more of a copper toned prince,
- 25:15Speaker 5: and I would say air Bud is a little bit
- 25:17Speaker 5: more blonde. But so there's so much Berry air Bud
- 25:21Speaker 5: personality crossover.
- 25:22Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 25:23Speaker 5: But the whole time I was watching this movie, I
- 25:24Speaker 5: was like, I feel as though Lindy is going to
- 25:27Speaker 5: be emotionally devastated just at the mere sight of Airbud
- 25:30Speaker 5: because he's so Berry like. And I am just curious
- 25:32Speaker 5: would Barry successfully be lured by tapioca pudding or like,
- 25:35Speaker 5: how exactly would you get him to come out onto
- 25:38Speaker 5: the basketball court.
- 25:39Speaker 4: Yeah, watching this movie was rough, and I will say
- 25:43Speaker 4: that it it's extremely accurate to my you know, it
- 25:48Speaker 4: matches up with my experience, the vibe and the energy
- 25:52Speaker 4: of Airbud visibility. Yeah, representation, Barry would eat an unlimited
- 25:58Speaker 4: number of pudding cups. He would come out of the
- 26:01Speaker 4: bushes for any amount of pudding cups, spaghettios the other thing. Yeah,
- 26:09Speaker 4: by the way, Josh not doing a great job of
- 26:11Speaker 4: taking care of this dog. No, really bad. It's too
- 26:14Speaker 4: much pudding for a dog, for sure.
- 26:17Speaker 3: I was thinking that where I was like, God, you
- 26:19Speaker 3: know that there's a bunch of kids that really took
- 26:22Speaker 3: that to heart.
- 26:25Speaker 4: I mean, but the thing about Barry, it's hard to
- 26:28Speaker 4: say because Barry has lived a soft life of pure leisure.
- 26:34Speaker 4: Not one bad thing has ever happened to him. He's
- 26:36Speaker 4: been coddled since birth. He's never been abused by an
- 26:39Speaker 4: evil clown. So the idea that Barry would ever even
- 26:43Speaker 4: hide from a human and not immediately attack them and
- 26:46Speaker 4: knock them over so that they will pet him. Barry
- 26:49Speaker 4: would never be in the bushes waiting to be lurd
- 26:51Speaker 4: with pudding. Like if Barry saw a boy with pudding,
- 26:56Speaker 4: the boy is toast. There's no hope. So I don't know,
- 27:01Speaker 4: but all the chaos that Airbud causes is very familiar
- 27:05Speaker 4: to me. Okay, which we we'll get to.
- 27:08Speaker 2: Yes, it's coming soon.
- 27:10Speaker 4: But we have seen We've seen him cause one scene
- 27:12Speaker 4: of chaos at the birthday party, but that was more
- 27:15Speaker 4: the clown doing all the chaos.
- 27:17Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean the clown was not talented. Well, fair
- 27:20Speaker 5: Bud was exceptionally talented at catching those little balls in
- 27:23Speaker 5: his mouth, you know.
- 27:24Speaker 4: Okay, I'm sorry, Perhaps we've watched different movies. What I
- 27:29Speaker 4: recall is that Airbud is doing his little ball tricks.
- 27:32Speaker 4: Then the clown throws a bigger ball at Airbun. Airbud
- 27:36Speaker 4: boops the ball back straight at the clown's nuts and
- 27:40Speaker 4: he deserves, which he deserves, injures the clown in his privates,
- 27:44Speaker 4: and then the clown starts flailing and screaming, and then
- 27:48Speaker 4: Airbud is not helping. He's racing around, he's hiding under tables.
- 27:52Speaker 4: The clown is chasing him. He's I'm just saying, obviously
- 27:56Speaker 4: the clown is to blame.
- 27:58Speaker 5: As they say in the law, can tributory negligence, So.
- 28:02Speaker 4: There was some contributory negligence. I'm just saying, sure. But yeah,
- 28:06Speaker 4: that's what my dog is like as well.
- 28:10Speaker 3: And also, I mean the reason Airbud does all that
- 28:12Speaker 3: is because, to quote Josh screaming, which he does a
- 28:15Speaker 3: lot towards the end of the movie.
- 28:17Speaker 4: He yeah, but hates that clowns ass so much.
- 28:25Speaker 3: Josh, Oh my god, he's doing so he's a child.
- 28:28Speaker 3: Shout out Kevin Ziegler because he's seekers because he's doing
- 28:31Speaker 3: so much, he's really selling. My dad just exploded, honestly, Like,
- 28:38Speaker 3: I'm surprised we haven't seen more of him.
- 28:40Speaker 4: Where'd he go?
- 28:41Speaker 5: We was on Gossip Girl.
- 28:42Speaker 4: Ye oh good, good, good good, because like there's a
- 28:45Speaker 4: part later, sorry spoiler, but like spoiler, there's a part
- 28:48Speaker 4: later where he like talks to this girl at school
- 28:52Speaker 4: and I'm so sorry to her. But you can really
- 28:55Speaker 4: see the difference between a real actor and a Canadian
- 29:00Speaker 4: child that they hired to yeah, to deliver one line.
- 29:03Speaker 3: I think that's true.
- 29:04Speaker 4: Yeah, Josh is a freaking pro.
- 29:06Speaker 2: He's a good child actor.
- 29:08Speaker 3: He went full method for this. He blew his dad up.
- 29:13Speaker 2: He's also in most of the sequels, oh, if not
- 29:18Speaker 2: all of them.
- 29:18Speaker 3: He's in Okay. I I hate that he's in the
- 29:20Speaker 3: first four, and then he's the protagonist. I think of
- 29:23Speaker 3: the first three and then the fourth, there's a grand
- 29:26Speaker 3: passing of the baton between Josh and Andrea. Josh goes
- 29:29Speaker 3: to college and so he's in the movie, but he's
- 29:32Speaker 3: not the protagonist. And then that's when Andrea takes over.
- 29:35Speaker 3: She's missus Baseball at this point, gotcha right, right? I
- 29:40Speaker 3: The extra homework I did for this was learning about
- 29:43Speaker 3: the expanded air Bud universe, which encompasses twelve movies.
- 29:48Speaker 2: Well, because there's all the air Buds and then air Buddy,
- 29:51Speaker 2: then there's a spin off of air Buddies, and then
- 29:54Speaker 2: which becomes snow Buddies, Space Buddies, Super Buddy, Fanta Buddy,
- 29:58Speaker 2: Treasure Buddies, Pookie Budies, and Santa Buddies, the legend of
- 30:02Speaker 2: Santa Pause, which then spins off into Santa Pause and
- 30:06Speaker 2: Santa Paus to the Santa Pups.
- 30:08Speaker 3: Okay, you can't tell by this small you know this,
- 30:12Speaker 3: this very intimate family drama that we're talking about, The
- 30:16Speaker 3: eventual airbud universe will will have global implications across literally
- 30:21Speaker 3: time and space.
- 30:22Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 30:23Speaker 3: And then in real life it resulted in Disney killing
- 30:29Speaker 3: over a dozen puppies, which I will get to the
- 30:32Speaker 3: most famously evil thing you can do be responsible for
- 30:36Speaker 3: the death of puppies.
- 30:37Speaker 4: Which I think we all learned from a Disney movie, yes,
- 30:40Speaker 4: called one hundred and one Dollmatians.
- 30:42Speaker 3: Yeah, but that's not till two thousand and eight, during
- 30:44Speaker 3: the production of Snow Buddies. Oh boy, oh sidebar later.
- 30:48Speaker 4: Oh brother, it's you know, since we have this golden retriever.
- 30:52Speaker 4: As soon as the movie started, my partner Roya started
- 30:55Speaker 4: was like, I can't watch it. I can't watch it.
- 30:57Speaker 4: Something's gonna happen to the dog, something can happen to
- 30:59Speaker 4: the dog. I was like, nothing happens to the dog.
- 31:01Speaker 4: I can tell you because there's nine hundred sequels, including
- 31:05Speaker 4: we know that Airbud is extremely virile and has like
- 31:09Speaker 4: one hundred children puppies who go on to play every
- 31:13Speaker 4: sport on Earth. So she's like she couldn't calm down.
- 31:17Speaker 4: She's very stressed, almost in tears, even when like all
- 31:21Speaker 4: the dog's doing is playing one on one with a boy.
- 31:24Speaker 4: Meanwhile she's reading out loud the most horrific facts from
- 31:28Speaker 4: Buddy's Wikipedia page.
- 31:30Speaker 3: Yes, like dead puppy.
- 31:31Speaker 4: Oh this is his last film. He dies of cancer
- 31:35Speaker 4: at age nine. I was like, sorry, oo, are making
- 31:40Speaker 4: me depressed about things that really happened to a real dog.
- 31:43Speaker 4: Meanwhile you're freaking out about things that aren't even gonna
- 31:47Speaker 4: happen to a fictional dog.
- 31:48Speaker 3: Anyway, It's really sad, it's really and and they go
- 31:52Speaker 3: on and like Buddy Buddy is the only Buddy has
- 31:55Speaker 3: two stunt doubles. I think in this because he did
- 31:58Speaker 3: not want to walk on the roof of the house,
- 32:00Speaker 3: and that's fair he did.
- 32:02Speaker 5: That was the cutest part though. It was so funny.
- 32:04Speaker 3: But I in future air Buds, Buddy would be played
- 32:08Speaker 3: by four, five or six dogs, which feels more ethical.
- 32:12Speaker 3: But this is this is Buddy's only This is Buddy's
- 32:16Speaker 3: only film.
- 32:16Speaker 5: It's like when they hire twins to play kids, a
- 32:20Speaker 5: single kid on a sitcom.
- 32:22Speaker 3: Buddy's fascinating because I feel like he's this part of
- 32:25Speaker 3: this like star system that doesn't exist anymore, where he
- 32:29Speaker 3: kind of becomes famous the way that some comedians become famous,
- 32:31Speaker 3: where he was like on Letterman a lot in the
- 32:35Speaker 3: early nineties. He's not on like Pee Wee Herman and
- 32:37Speaker 3: that he was on Letterman a lot, and then he
- 32:39Speaker 3: got his own starring vehicle.
- 32:41Speaker 4: Nice shout out to him.
- 32:43Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, okay. So then Josh tries out for the
- 32:49Speaker 2: basketball team at school. He doesn't make it.
- 32:52Speaker 4: But okay, he doesn't. He just sits on the bleachers
- 32:55Speaker 4: like a weirdo. He doesn't even do the tryouts, right.
- 32:58Speaker 5: I was like, did we see that off screen or
- 33:00Speaker 5: just like you know, he just sort of is just
- 33:01Speaker 5: like sitting there at first, although like in between there's
- 33:06Speaker 5: a janitor who you can tell has sort of a
- 33:08Speaker 5: mystical air about him. Uh, and the janitor likes sees
- 33:11Speaker 5: something in Josh. He's like, why isn't Josh throwing out meanwhile, Josh.
- 33:15Speaker 5: So then Josh becomes the first, he becomes the manager
- 33:18Speaker 5: of the team right wherein he is.
- 33:20Speaker 4: Bullied by Larry.
- 33:21Speaker 3: Honestly, if I was told that I was a manager
- 33:24Speaker 3: of the basketball team, I'd be like, I'd just rather
- 33:26Speaker 3: not do it any of this.
- 33:27Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, this coach makes him do like basketball child labor.
- 33:33Speaker 2: I know at night in the basement.
- 33:35Speaker 3: I'll go play the trump on.
- 33:36Speaker 4: You need to stay after school until ten pm and
- 33:40Speaker 4: you need to wash your bullies dirty underwear that he
- 33:44Speaker 4: threw on your face, Like that's I don't think that's allowed.
- 33:47Speaker 5: I don't think that's a real job.
- 33:49Speaker 3: Also, the way that this coach is written we'll get
- 33:52Speaker 3: into is so severe turned. But he has this wildline
- 33:57Speaker 3: during I think his first scene where he says, if
- 34:00Speaker 3: you can win on the court, you can win it life,
- 34:04Speaker 3: which is just a really intense thing to say.
- 34:06Speaker 2: No, that's true, Jamie, that's true.
- 34:09Speaker 3: Not for him.
- 34:12Speaker 4: I also like the there's when Josh first comes into
- 34:15Speaker 4: the gym for the for the tryouts. I think the
- 34:18Speaker 4: reason he doesn't try out is because he's immediately bullied,
- 34:20Speaker 4: which also just is weird because he just is another
- 34:23Speaker 4: boy who looks the same as all that. It's like,
- 34:25Speaker 4: why are these people picking on him, but he has
- 34:27Speaker 4: this red, white and blue basketball and then Larry the
- 34:30Speaker 4: Bully goes, you look like you stole that from the
- 34:33Speaker 4: Harlem Globe Trotters or something like that, and it's like nice, Yeah,
- 34:36Speaker 4: that's a famous basketball teams, Like, Larry, what's your damage? Larry?
- 34:42Speaker 3: What the hell? Larry?
- 34:43Speaker 4: You would you would never make it onto the Harlem Globetrotters, Larry.
- 34:47Speaker 3: Larry's just bad because his father is an actual cartoon character,
- 34:52Speaker 3: Larry's father, Big the Guy. The guy's having a blast.
- 34:56Speaker 3: He's like, my, I just gotta get on the court.
- 34:58Speaker 3: Like his face so elastic, it's very distracting.
- 35:02Speaker 4: Also, the coach is like, hey, I need a manager.
- 35:06Speaker 4: I noticed that you just sat on the bleachers and
- 35:08Speaker 4: you didn't try out. That's fine, you're clearly a loser
- 35:10Speaker 4: who wouldn't make it. I do need a manager. It's
- 35:13Speaker 4: a ton of work. You got to get here before
- 35:14Speaker 4: the team and leave after the team. Anyway, you're hired.
- 35:18Speaker 4: First of all, you're not selling it. That sounds horrible.
- 35:21Speaker 4: And Josh doesn't even agree. But then the coach is
- 35:23Speaker 4: just like, he just conscripts him to be his servant.
- 35:27Speaker 3: Yeah, and Josh and Josh's mom is just like I
- 35:32Speaker 3: need childcare. Yeah, this is this is what's gonna happen.
- 35:36Speaker 3: Yeah that works Josh's mom. I have such a complicated,
- 35:39Speaker 3: such complicated feelings around Josh's mom because sometimes I'm like
- 35:42Speaker 3: she's doing her best, she's her husband exploded. But then
- 35:46Speaker 3: other times she's so harsh with Josh in ways that
- 35:49Speaker 3: and Airbud like I was like, she acts like Airbud
- 35:53Speaker 3: blew her husband up, like the way that she treats
- 35:55Speaker 3: him sometimes.
- 35:56Speaker 5: Yeah she does. I mean there's a scene where like
- 35:59Speaker 5: like meanwhile, while this is all happening, Josh is like
- 36:02Speaker 5: becoming the basketball coach, manager whatever. Airbud is still hiding
- 36:07Speaker 5: out at the condemned.
- 36:08Speaker 3: Church basketball court.
- 36:11Speaker 5: And then eventually he wins him over with the tapioca
- 36:16Speaker 5: and he brings Airbud in for like a makeover montage,
- 36:19Speaker 5: you know, and then Airbud escapes.
- 36:22Speaker 4: It turns out Airbud is hot.
- 36:26Speaker 5: He takes uf Airbuds glasses, they take off Airbuds glasses,
- 36:30Speaker 5: and he's a hot hottie under there. He's not a nerd.
- 36:34Speaker 5: So anyway, he escapes from the bathroom after his makeover
- 36:36Speaker 5: and then runs into the living room and knocks over
- 36:39Speaker 5: the ladder that has all the paint and wallpapering supplies
- 36:41Speaker 5: on it, and paint and glue go everywhere. Now here's
- 36:43Speaker 5: a questions, Mom, why did you leave paint cans with
- 36:47Speaker 5: no lids on out like that all day? Because she's
- 36:51Speaker 5: just come home from work and I was like, what
- 36:53Speaker 5: is wrong with this? Is not on Airbud at all. No,
- 36:55Speaker 5: this is on you, fake Ileana Douglas.
- 36:58Speaker 3: She does not take accountability for this. She blames it
- 37:00Speaker 3: on air Bud entirely outrageous. And then the thing that
- 37:04Speaker 3: really stuck with me, I guess we are just sort
- 37:06Speaker 3: of continuing the recapha. This is where the movie's go
- 37:09Speaker 3: Like Josh obviously is like I want this dog, and
- 37:13Speaker 3: I'm just like, I'm sorry, this kid just lost his dad.
- 37:17Speaker 3: You have to give him anything he wants, Like that
- 37:20Speaker 3: is the fucking dog. My friend Grace friend of the pod,
- 37:23Speaker 3: Grace freyd I just saw her one person show about
- 37:27Speaker 3: like she lost her dad when she was ten or eleven,
- 37:29Speaker 3: and she like she there's a great joke about how
- 37:31Speaker 3: she was like I knew I was going to get
- 37:33Speaker 3: a PS two and that was really powerful and it's like,
- 37:36Speaker 3: because you have to give the grieving child the thing
- 37:40Speaker 3: they want.
- 37:40Speaker 5: Just got a shower with gifts for a little while,
- 37:42Speaker 5: I think.
- 37:43Speaker 3: Yeah, And Josh's mom is like absolutely not. And then
- 37:47Speaker 3: even when when Josh gives him a little cardboard box,
- 37:51Speaker 3: she's like tear it up, like.
- 37:53Speaker 5: Yeah, she's such an asshole about it. I know you're
- 37:56Speaker 5: trying to make a home for air Bud, and I
- 37:58Speaker 5: won't stand for.
- 38:00Speaker 4: Josh is like, can the dog just live in this
- 38:03Speaker 4: wet box in the yard, And she's like absolutely not.
- 38:08Speaker 5: But like, I want to say a couple of things
- 38:10Speaker 5: because I feel like this is important for later. Despite
- 38:13Speaker 5: this adversity, Josh really does do his due diligence. He
- 38:16Speaker 5: puts up the found Dog posters all over the town, which,
- 38:19Speaker 5: by the way, this is the first instance of me
- 38:22Speaker 5: genuinely laughing. Josh is putting up the found Dog and
- 38:25Speaker 5: it's like a picture of air Bud and air Buzz
- 38:27Speaker 5: is running up snatching those things right off the telephone
- 38:30Speaker 5: fall and I was like comedy was watching it, just
- 38:33Speaker 5: going aha, but that is so funny, and he's just
- 38:38Speaker 5: putting him up all over the town, So he really,
- 38:40Speaker 5: I mean, even though he really really wants this dog.
- 38:43Speaker 5: He is like doing what is necessary to like find
- 38:46Speaker 5: his home if such home exists, even though he deserves
- 38:50Speaker 5: that damn dog, he does.
- 38:52Speaker 3: Lord, let the kid have the dog. I was so
- 38:55Speaker 3: frustrated with her, I know.
- 38:56Speaker 2: Yeah. Absolutely. Also, if we haven't made this clear yet,
- 39:01Speaker 2: Josh discovers that the dog can kind of play basketball.
- 39:06Speaker 5: Yeah, he discovers Airbud can ball immediately at the abandoned church.
- 39:11Speaker 4: Immediately because actually the thing that wins the dog over
- 39:15Speaker 4: is not the pudding. The pudding lures him out of
- 39:17Speaker 4: the bushes, but then Josh notices that the dog is
- 39:20Speaker 4: fixated on his Harlem Globetrotter's basketball, and so that he's like,
- 39:24Speaker 4: do you like this ball? Boy? Like, like I like that.
- 39:31Speaker 3: Airbud has to be convinced of Josh, not the reverse,
- 39:34Speaker 3: because he's like, oh you ball, okay.
- 39:38Speaker 5: Okay, player, let's play.
- 39:41Speaker 4: Oh, by the way, can I really quickly? Like There's
- 39:43Speaker 4: also this part where Josh cleans up the landscaping on
- 39:47Speaker 4: the basketball court and for some reason decides to kick
- 39:50Speaker 4: over this fence and then on the immediately on the
- 39:53Speaker 4: other side of the fence is a beautiful.
- 39:55Speaker 5: Lake with like a Mountain glacial Yeah.
- 39:59Speaker 4: And it was shot in Vancouber, which which makes sense
- 40:02Speaker 4: because that is kind of what it looks like up
- 40:04Speaker 4: here where I live outside Seattle. But I'm sorry, not
- 40:07Speaker 4: a good thing to have next to your basketball court.
- 40:10Speaker 2: A gaping hole where the ball can go through the ball.
- 40:13Speaker 4: Is immediately gonna go into the lake, especially if a
- 40:15Speaker 4: dog is playing.
- 40:17Speaker 5: Yeah, play basketball, Like well, this dog is so good.
- 40:19Speaker 3: It's almost like the church knew what they were doing
- 40:21Speaker 3: when they put that fence up. That was it Also like.
- 40:25Speaker 5: I love that the church is like could someone cover
- 40:27Speaker 5: up that view? Do I want to look at God's
- 40:31Speaker 5: wonders while I preach? No, I don't.
- 40:33Speaker 4: This church is not about God's wonders. This church is
- 40:36Speaker 4: about one thing and that's best. That's that's basketball church.
- 40:40Speaker 5: Baby.
- 40:42Speaker 3: I Also, I mean it's like and it's also presented
- 40:44Speaker 3: as if like Josh is not aware of where he lives.
- 40:48Speaker 3: He's like, oh, there's water here. It was like, well
- 40:50Speaker 3: you know that, you know that?
- 40:52Speaker 4: Oh my god?
- 40:52Speaker 2: He gets in a boat later to an island, the
- 40:55Speaker 2: water taxi.
- 40:56Speaker 5: Yeah, he gets a little Yeah, he gets on a
- 40:58Speaker 5: little tugboat or a little water tax.
- 41:00Speaker 3: I'm kind of obsessed with the water taxi guy later
- 41:02Speaker 3: because he looks like he is from another century. Then
- 41:05Speaker 3: the Money takes place in and never speaks. It just
- 41:08Speaker 3: takes this kid back and forth. I was like, what
- 41:10Speaker 3: is his story?
- 41:11Speaker 5: He didn't realize he was even in a movie. He
- 41:13Speaker 5: just like, you want to ride?
- 41:14Speaker 4: Okay, He's up on a grizzled teenage Mariner.
- 41:19Speaker 3: He's wearing a Newsy cap. I was like, what movie
- 41:21Speaker 3: are you in the trench coat?
- 41:24Speaker 2: Yeah, it's frightening.
- 41:26Speaker 5: But I think you know, with like the gentle coaching
- 41:28Speaker 5: of air Bud, Josh learns how to ball, like he
- 41:32Speaker 5: gets a lot better, and it really is, because you know,
- 41:34Speaker 5: Airbud is out here boopin' and crossing over yeah, and assisting.
- 41:39Speaker 5: And Josh was like, wow, I get it now, I
- 41:41Speaker 5: get the fundamentals of basketball. Thank you Airbud. So it's
- 41:44Speaker 5: pretty sweet.
- 41:45Speaker 3: It's really nice.
- 41:46Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah.
- 41:47Speaker 3: So now Josh has Airbud and his mom is like,
- 41:50Speaker 3: you can't have this dog, And then she says if
- 41:53Speaker 3: no one claims the dog by Christmas, which is about
- 41:55Speaker 3: two weeks away, she'll take him to the pound. One
- 41:58Speaker 3: of the many false conflicts of the movie because then boom,
- 42:02Speaker 3: it's Christmas with another weirdly, like the Christmas montage is
- 42:06Speaker 3: so weird to me, where it's like a montage where
- 42:09Speaker 3: the mom is speaking in voiceover about like Santa Is.
- 42:13Speaker 3: She's talking about Santa like he's Jesus. Yeah, yes, sorry, is.
- 42:19Speaker 4: That is she reading from like a miracle on thirty
- 42:21Speaker 4: fourth Street or something. She's like reading from a book.
- 42:24Speaker 4: But it is weirdly, it's weird.
- 42:26Speaker 3: Yeah, it is very Chris Christian coded.
- 42:30Speaker 4: Okay, but before we get to Christmas, there's the moment
- 42:33Speaker 4: when a moment when I genuinely left so loud, which
- 42:37Speaker 4: was when they're making the deal. The mom is like, Okay,
- 42:40Speaker 4: he can stay in the yard for two weeks, but
- 42:42Speaker 4: he's not allowed in the house. And if you ever
- 42:45Speaker 4: sneak that dog in the house, this is over. Do
- 42:49Speaker 4: you understand you you are not allowed to sneak the
- 42:52Speaker 4: dog in the house of Josh is like, I totally understand.
- 42:54Speaker 4: And then they're in the foreground in the background teeny
- 43:00Speaker 4: tiny at the top of the stairs you can just
- 43:02Speaker 4: see Airbud's little face peeking through the last Airbud has
- 43:08Speaker 4: already sneaked into the house. He's on it I was,
- 43:11Speaker 4: he's been living in this house. Josh doesn't even know.
- 43:15Speaker 5: Josh doesn't even know. I was weeping at this. It
- 43:18Speaker 5: was so funny, just like the visual of like the
- 43:21Speaker 5: mom being mad at the concept of Airbud being in
- 43:23Speaker 5: the house at Airbud, just being like, ha, it's so funny.
- 43:25Speaker 5: And so I took a picture of my TV and
- 43:27Speaker 5: I was like, once Lindy watches it, I'm gonna send
- 43:29Speaker 5: this to her. And then in Unison we were like
- 43:31Speaker 5: this part killed me, and we sent each other the
- 43:33Speaker 5: same picture of Airbud in the background, like mugging the mom.
- 43:37Speaker 5: I was like, this movie freaking rocks.
- 43:40Speaker 4: I love it.
- 43:42Speaker 2: It is great.
- 43:42Speaker 4: It's so great, a great visual gag. I mean good,
- 43:47Speaker 4: so good. Good Anya. Creators of Airbud Heart Harvey Weinstein.
- 43:54Speaker 2: Oh god, I hope he was never on set. This
- 43:58Speaker 2: movie was directed by Charles Martin Smith.
- 44:01Speaker 3: Yeah, who, Okay, you're you're being a hater because he's
- 44:07Speaker 3: a TV in films Charles Martin Smith. Of course, of
- 44:10Speaker 3: course he's a he's I don't know, he's what. His
- 44:14Speaker 3: biggest role was in American Graffiti, which I still haven't seen.
- 44:19Speaker 3: But he has an actor turned director who I think
- 44:24Speaker 3: is fine. I always enjoy this career. Note where he
- 44:27Speaker 3: directed Airbud is very successful. But then I think he
- 44:30Speaker 3: had that moment where he's like, wait a second, I'm
- 44:31Speaker 3: an artist. I can't just direct Airbud movies. And so
- 44:34Speaker 3: he does not return for Airbud movies and then ends
- 44:37Speaker 3: up directing a bunch of movies very much like Airbud anyways,
- 44:40Speaker 3: tough business. He ends up directing Dolphin Tale and Dolphin
- 44:45Speaker 3: Tale Too.
- 44:45Speaker 5: Oh interesting.
- 44:46Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm sure he's rich as hell from Airbud, I hope.
- 44:49Speaker 4: So so good good for him, I hope.
- 44:51Speaker 3: So he deserves it because he made.
- 44:52Speaker 4: Something really special. He gave something special to the world.
- 44:57Speaker 2: Okay. So then one evening, as Josh is in the
- 45:02Speaker 2: school basement doing you know, basketball laundry, he sees an
- 45:07Speaker 2: old Knicks jersey and a photo of a basketball player
- 45:11Speaker 2: from back in the day, and he realizes these things
- 45:13Speaker 2: belong to the janitor at the school, Arthur Cheney played
- 45:18Speaker 2: by Bill Cobbs, and that he was a former basketball star.
- 45:22Speaker 2: So Josh asks Arthur to sign his like collector card
- 45:27Speaker 2: that he has of Arthur, but he's like, no, that
- 45:30Speaker 2: isn't me. That guy died a long time ago. But
- 45:33Speaker 2: then later Josh sees him shooting hoops and Josh is like,
- 45:39Speaker 2: wait a minute, that is Arthur Cheney. So that's that beat.
- 45:44Speaker 5: Just a couple of things about Arthur Cheney. First, Bill Cobbs,
- 45:48Speaker 5: you will recognize him if you see it. This man
- 45:50Speaker 5: was in everything from like nineteen ninety two to probably
- 45:52Speaker 5: two thousand and three. He was in everything. There's nothing
- 45:56Speaker 5: funnier to me than a Knick's legend keeping his nineteen
- 45:59Speaker 5: fifty nixt jersey in his locker at school.
- 46:04Speaker 3: That's where we keep just so he can deny it
- 46:07Speaker 3: when confronted.
- 46:07Speaker 5: It just be like, no, I never played for the Knicks.
- 46:10Speaker 5: I just keep this here like that is so funny
- 46:13Speaker 5: to do.
- 46:13Speaker 4: I keep my jersey in a cupboard in a dirty
- 46:16Speaker 4: basement of the middle school where I work as a janitor.
- 46:20Speaker 5: In the boiler room of the middle school.
- 46:22Speaker 4: I guess, by the way, not to not to make
- 46:25Speaker 4: things too dark, but how bad of a gambling problem
- 46:28Speaker 4: did Arthur Cheney have? Why did he go from NBA
- 46:30Speaker 4: star to working As I know, the salaries are probably
- 46:34Speaker 4: not as high in the fifties, but I mean he
- 46:36Speaker 4: was a real star as we find out later not
- 46:38Speaker 4: to spoil anything.
- 46:39Speaker 3: He's like recognized on such like he's a legend.
- 46:42Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 46:42Speaker 3: Yeah, there's so many conflicting tropes with Arthur Cheney that
- 46:47Speaker 3: it's like hard to really know where to begin because
- 46:49Speaker 3: it's like there's a lot of tropes around I fel
- 46:52Speaker 3: black actors that are put in there where he has
- 46:54Speaker 3: this mystical quality that is completely unnecessary.
- 46:57Speaker 5: Yes, I was gonna say, like not to get too
- 47:00Speaker 5: serious about a children's movie where a dog plays basketball,
- 47:02Speaker 5: but they really don't play what they call the magical
- 47:05Speaker 5: Negro trope. And like as soon as this man appears
- 47:07Speaker 5: on you screen, you know that's the role he's gonna play,
- 47:10Speaker 5: because like the first scene you see him and he's
- 47:12Speaker 5: kind of in shadow, but they're using a recognizable actress,
- 47:15Speaker 5: so you know he's gonna have a bigger role in
- 47:17Speaker 5: the movie, right. And of course, and like this trope
- 47:19Speaker 5: is basically like a black character who will do anything
- 47:24Speaker 5: to further the goals of the white protagonist and it
- 47:27Speaker 5: was some sort of magical flavor. And in this case,
- 47:30Speaker 5: his magical skill is that he used to play for
- 47:33Speaker 5: the Knicks. But of course he's kind of hiding that
- 47:35Speaker 5: from Josh and all this other stuff. It's not as
- 47:38Speaker 5: like pronounced as it is in other movies. Were like
- 47:41Speaker 5: the legend of Bagger Vance. But usually this character is
- 47:43Speaker 5: like a janitor or a caddie, or in the.
- 47:47Speaker 3: Case of Ghost, a psychic driving Miss Daisy as another
- 47:50Speaker 3: like really famous example.
- 47:52Speaker 5: Green Mile exactly, or or an inmate.
- 47:55Speaker 3: Yeah, what was that shitty movie that came out recently,
- 47:58Speaker 3: Marshall Ellie won an oscar for it.
- 48:00Speaker 5: But it's h oh Green Book, Yeah, where he's like
- 48:03Speaker 5: Viggo Mortons's driver. Yeah, and he's like that too, and
- 48:06Speaker 5: where they'll sacrifice themselves for the greater good of the
- 48:09Speaker 5: white protagonists or protagonists. And it's not that serious an Airbud,
- 48:13Speaker 5: I mean in this case, it just deploys as he
- 48:16Speaker 5: helps Airbud at the end. But like here you have
- 48:19Speaker 5: this man who was like a Nix legend and now
- 48:21Speaker 5: he's a janitor. He has all these incredible skills as
- 48:24Speaker 5: like a coach and as a leader and as a person,
- 48:26Speaker 5: and he uses it to like reunite a.
- 48:28Speaker 4: Dog with a young boy.
- 48:32Speaker 5: I mean, it's kind of like the classic magical Negro
- 48:34Speaker 5: trope being deployed in this like children's movie, and it
- 48:37Speaker 5: like it's like, man, ten year olds are just eight
- 48:41Speaker 5: to twelve year olds are being immediately introduced to this
- 48:43Speaker 5: like ridiculous stereotype that we see in like lots of
- 48:46Speaker 5: different movies, But the fact that you see it in
- 48:48Speaker 5: a kid's movie is kind of disappointing. Although I do
- 48:51Speaker 5: love that guy.
- 48:52Speaker 3: He's great, He's great. This is not the only I mean,
- 48:55Speaker 3: we've talked about this troupe many times in the show
- 48:57Speaker 3: over the years, but this is not the only children's
- 49:00Speaker 3: basketball movie in which we have discussed this trope. And
- 49:03Speaker 3: we also discussed it years ago in our episode on
- 49:06Speaker 3: Full Court Miracle right that d com the Disney Channel
- 49:10Speaker 3: original movie about the I think also a middle school
- 49:14Speaker 3: basketball team that has I mean, I don't remember that
- 49:18Speaker 3: many details about it because it's just a movie that
- 49:21Speaker 3: leaves you at the moment it's over. But yeah, like
- 49:24Speaker 3: this trope is like in all over kids media, it's wild.
- 49:27Speaker 4: Yeah. There's also this angle with in this movie where
- 49:30Speaker 4: when they first go into his boiler room secret office,
- 49:34Speaker 4: they pan across all his stuff and it's like, oh,
- 49:38Speaker 4: you thought he was just a janitor, Well, I bet
- 49:42Speaker 4: you didn't think he would have a chess set and
- 49:46Speaker 4: a book about engineering, and it's like, oh, he's a janitor,
- 49:51Speaker 4: but he's also a genius and then whoa, and you
- 49:55Speaker 4: know in that moment when they're like, he's a janitor,
- 49:59Speaker 4: but something else, something more. He also reads books, Like
- 50:03Speaker 4: I wrote down in my notes, you know, this man
- 50:06Speaker 4: is the one who's going to deliver the line there's
- 50:09Speaker 4: nothing in the rule book that says a dog can't
- 50:11Speaker 4: play basketball because you know, he's read the rule book
- 50:14Speaker 4: because he likes to play chess.
- 50:15Speaker 5: Yeah, and he and it just and he, like I
- 50:18Speaker 5: was saying before, I mean, he's like the only one
- 50:21Speaker 5: who can sort of magically mystically see Josh's potential and like,
- 50:26Speaker 5: you know, it's just the way it's deployed to. He
- 50:30Speaker 5: can use his powers to help Josh, but he himself remains.
- 50:34Speaker 3: But he's not able to change his own life.
- 50:36Speaker 4: Like yeah, right, And in case I'm not being clear, Yeah,
- 50:40Speaker 4: janitors can play chess and know how to read. Yeah,
- 50:45Speaker 4: rights allowed. I don't know what brought Arthur Cheney from
- 50:48Speaker 4: the NBA to the basement of Greenfield Middle School or whatever.
- 50:52Speaker 4: The school is called.
- 50:53Speaker 5: Fernfield, where anything can happen, but real.
- 50:58Speaker 4: People do all kinds of jobs and it's normal.
- 51:02Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 51:02Speaker 3: Yeah, So we get this like very common, hackneyed blend
- 51:08Speaker 3: of a racist trope with a classist trope by this
- 51:11Speaker 3: great actor. And it's weird because I think, ultimately Arthur
- 51:16Speaker 3: and Airbud and this is this can't be good end
- 51:19Speaker 3: up filling a similar role in Josh's life where they
- 51:22Speaker 3: help him realize his potential and they believe in him
- 51:26Speaker 3: and care about him when it seems like no one
- 51:28Speaker 3: else does. Arthur's a fascinating character to because I feel
- 51:31Speaker 3: like there's so many there's so many opportunities to try
- 51:35Speaker 3: at least try things with this character, but he just
- 51:37Speaker 3: disappears for long stretches.
- 51:39Speaker 4: Also, you're telling me that an American public school has
- 51:43Speaker 4: a former NBA player working as the janitor, and they
- 51:46Speaker 4: choose to hire a random man to be the basketball.
- 51:50Speaker 5: Coach who ends up being physically abusive. I mean, that's
- 51:52Speaker 5: why Arthur ends up becoming He does end up becoming
- 51:56Speaker 5: the coach of the boys middle school basketball team in
- 51:59Speaker 5: fern Field, a suburb of Seattle. I guess because he
- 52:03Speaker 5: does have a Sonics basketball mug rip to my Seattle
- 52:06Speaker 5: super Sonics and also that kids Stewart has a piece
- 52:10Speaker 5: of or he has Scottie Pippens orange peel, so they
- 52:14Speaker 5: are close enough to Seattle to go to Sonics games.
- 52:17Speaker 3: And Dennis Rodman's gum.
- 52:19Speaker 5: Yeah, he does eventually coach because Shawn Camp's garbage sorry
- 52:23Speaker 5: and Shawn Camps Apple Corp. He does eventually get get
- 52:27Speaker 5: hired as the coach because the previous coach gets caught
- 52:30Speaker 5: physically abusing Stuart. He's like chucking basketball's at Stuart's head.
- 52:35Speaker 5: And then even then the principal is like, well, we're
- 52:37Speaker 5: thinking about letting Larry's dad do it because he volunteered,
- 52:41Speaker 5: and Josh has to be like, I have a suggestion,
- 52:45Speaker 5: how about former Nick's legend Arthur Cheney.
- 52:48Speaker 4: Maybe he could do it. I just think in no
- 52:51Speaker 4: universe would Arthur not have already been the coach. I mean,
- 52:54Speaker 4: this is absurd.
- 52:56Speaker 3: Yes, it's true. I mean, so let's let's get let's
- 52:59Speaker 3: get up there. Where do we leave off Kitlan?
- 53:01Speaker 5: Oh?
- 53:01Speaker 4: Bye bye?
- 53:02Speaker 5: Right?
- 53:02Speaker 2: Okay, so I think we're at like it's Christmas morning
- 53:06Speaker 2: and his mom lets Josh have buddy. So that conflict
- 53:11Speaker 2: of he will never live in this house is.
- 53:14Speaker 5: False conflict because Airbud won her over with the power
- 53:18Speaker 5: of ball and because Airbud. Every night, Airbud sneaks into
- 53:21Speaker 5: the house by jumping up up a lattice into across
- 53:24Speaker 5: the roof and into Josh's bedroom. And one night he
- 53:27Speaker 5: goes to do it and nobody's home and Airbud's like,
- 53:28Speaker 5: what the fuck? So Airbud finds the middle school. He
- 53:32Speaker 5: escapes and finds the middle school, and he goes to
- 53:35Speaker 5: the basketball game disrupts the whole thing.
- 53:37Speaker 4: It's hilarious, by the way.
- 53:38Speaker 3: I know this needs to happen for the for the
- 53:40Speaker 3: plot to work, but Airbud is just like loose, like
- 53:44Speaker 3: he's just this dog has never seen a leash in
- 53:47Speaker 3: his life.
- 53:48Speaker 5: I'm worried about Airbud.
- 53:50Speaker 4: You don't know. I'm so worried.
- 53:51Speaker 3: Why is she like, Okay, you could keep him and
- 53:53Speaker 3: we don't really need to take care of him the
- 53:56Speaker 3: way you'd expect.
- 53:57Speaker 4: Yeah, I have a genuine question. There are several scenes,
- 54:00Speaker 4: multiple scenes after the Christmas scene when Airbud has supposedly
- 54:03Speaker 4: been brought into the family, where Airbud is like is
- 54:06Speaker 4: locked out of the house and he's still climbing up
- 54:09Speaker 4: the trellis and sneaking through the window. Two questions. First
- 54:12Speaker 4: of all, I'm sorry, it's Christmas time in the Pacific
- 54:14Speaker 4: Northwest and the window is open.
- 54:16Speaker 5: And yeah, we would never do that. Yeah, and there's.
- 54:20Speaker 4: Like people having a picnic outside on the ground but whatever.
- 54:23Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 54:23Speaker 4: But question number two is Airbu still not allowed to
- 54:26Speaker 4: live inside the house.
- 54:27Speaker 5: I think he's not allowed to go in the house.
- 54:29Speaker 5: I think she's still like, yeah, we can keep the dog,
- 54:31Speaker 5: but he because at one point they do build him
- 54:33Speaker 5: a doghouse and paint body on the doghouse, So I
- 54:35Speaker 5: think he's still technically supposed to live outside permanently.
- 54:38Speaker 4: That is deranged.
- 54:40Speaker 5: It's evil, not nice. But he like breaks He breaks
- 54:43Speaker 5: up the middle school basketball game, causes a kerfuffle. It's hilarious,
- 54:47Speaker 5: by the way, and I'm not I don't mean that ironically.
- 54:50Speaker 5: I was laughing genuine real laughs.
- 54:53Speaker 2: Again Jortle's slapstick comedy. It's great.
- 54:56Speaker 5: And then that's when they realize he can ball. I
- 54:59Speaker 5: think that Josh does the thing where he's making Airbud
- 55:03Speaker 5: follow the ball and then they do like an alley oop.
- 55:06Speaker 5: They hear the ball swish and the whole crowd goes, oh,
- 55:09Speaker 5: why this dog and ball?
- 55:13Speaker 2: And before that, Josh he gets invited to try out
- 55:17Speaker 2: for the basketball team again. But this makes him sad
- 55:21Speaker 2: and he's like, I don't want to play, Buddy, you
- 55:23Speaker 2: can play, and then he like kind of nonchalantly tosses
- 55:27Speaker 2: the ball to the side, and then Buddy shoots and
- 55:29Speaker 2: scores a basket. So Josh rediscovers that he can play basketball,
- 55:35Speaker 2: or at least like shoot hoops. And so, with this
- 55:38Speaker 2: renewed enthusiasm for basketball, Josh tries out for the team.
- 55:42Speaker 2: He's suddenly very good at basketball, and he makes it.
- 55:45Speaker 3: On the team.
- 55:46Speaker 2: And then this is like the first game where Buddy
- 55:48Speaker 2: comes crashing in because he's just like, woof, woof, why
- 55:51Speaker 2: not my best friend Josh home? And so he comes
- 55:55Speaker 2: to the school and he sees Josh playing, so he
- 55:58Speaker 2: runs out on the court, you know, reeks havoc. Everyone's
- 56:03Speaker 2: falling down, everything is falling over, everything's getting knocked around,
- 56:06Speaker 2: and everyone's like, whoa, he should be the mascot and
- 56:09Speaker 2: he should do that trick during the halftime show.
- 56:12Speaker 5: It's a huge honor, you know, to get invited to
- 56:14Speaker 5: be the halftime entertainment of the middle school basketball game.
- 56:17Speaker 5: Because we find out later that they televised these things
- 56:20Speaker 5: and they report the outcome on the front page of
- 56:23Speaker 5: the newspaper. So this is a big deal for Airbud Man.
- 56:26Speaker 3: And also and also because I oh what this is
- 56:29Speaker 3: like so kids movie and the best way the middle
- 56:31Speaker 3: school basketball team is on the front page of the
- 56:33Speaker 3: newspaper every single day. The moolves there's nothing going on
- 56:38Speaker 3: in this town. I love it.
- 56:40Speaker 4: Not that Missus from would know, because there's a subplot that, oh, yeah,
- 56:45Speaker 4: that Buddy has been stealing and hiding her newspaper every
- 56:49Speaker 4: day for a month because he's traumatized. He has PTSD
- 56:54Speaker 4: from the evil clown bapping them with a newspaper.
- 56:57Speaker 3: I know.
- 56:58Speaker 5: But that's why the mom is like, oh, he can
- 57:00Speaker 5: stay because he's so oh my god, you guys love
- 57:03Speaker 5: each other due to basketball, just like you and your dad.
- 57:06Speaker 5: And also that was a sweet trick, I think his
- 57:08Speaker 5: mom thinks. And so then Josh gets to keep Buddy
- 57:11Speaker 5: at Christmas and it's really genuinely very heartwarming. And then
- 57:15Speaker 5: Josh makes air Bud a pair of sneakers, so a
- 57:19Speaker 5: pair two pairs.
- 57:21Speaker 2: True.
- 57:22Speaker 3: I was thinking about things that because it is true
- 57:25Speaker 3: that Missus frem is just completely severed from the world.
- 57:29Speaker 3: She has no idea what's going on. She makes it
- 57:31Speaker 3: sound like the newspaper is the only way she could
- 57:34Speaker 3: learn news, even though I think they have a television.
- 57:37Speaker 3: But no, I like to think that she like after
- 57:40Speaker 3: the events of Airbud, like learns that Heaven's Gate happened,
- 57:43Speaker 3: and she's like, oh my god, I had no idea
- 57:47Speaker 3: my golden retriever Airbud has been taking all my newspapers.
- 57:50Speaker 3: She learns about Princess die like, it's just a lot
- 57:53Speaker 3: happened in nineteen ninety seven.
- 57:54Speaker 4: Do you think that there is there are feminist implications
- 57:57Speaker 4: to the fact that she works at a napkin.
- 58:02Speaker 3: Okay I missed that.
- 58:03Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, she works in napkins. What she's like a
- 58:07Speaker 2: napkin silk person. She runs a napkin factory, and that's
- 58:11Speaker 2: why they moved to fern Field.
- 58:14Speaker 3: She's a napkin girl.
- 58:16Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 58:17Speaker 2: Not only that, she apparently has a second job, because
- 58:21Speaker 2: she's on the phone with her mom and she's like, no, Mom,
- 58:23Speaker 2: it's not called moonlighting. You're allowed to have two jobs.
- 58:27Speaker 2: So I'm like, what is her second job?
- 58:29Speaker 3: To me?
- 58:29Speaker 5: That was the only evidence I could find of a
- 58:32Speaker 5: Bechdel Test passing moment where she says to her mom,
- 58:36Speaker 5: I have two jobs, and I was like, nailed it.
- 58:38Speaker 2: And we never well, we never hear her mom speak.
- 58:41Speaker 2: I don't think so.
- 58:42Speaker 3: Oh, she could be like your father is righted.
- 58:46Speaker 2: But I'm just guessing that they needed to give her
- 58:50Speaker 2: a lot of jobs because they need a reason for
- 58:52Speaker 2: her to never be home so that she doesn't notice
- 58:55Speaker 2: her son is always playing basketball at a haunted church,
- 59:00Speaker 2: Like I don't know what's going on there, but she
- 59:02Speaker 2: has a three year old toddler at home. That's like,
- 59:04Speaker 2: who is taking care of that child?
- 59:06Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 59:07Speaker 5: And no childcare that we see.
- 59:10Speaker 3: And it's like, again, this could be in a movie
- 59:12Speaker 3: that's not afraid to get serious. This could be an
- 59:14Speaker 3: element that comes up. Is like, you know, Josh is
- 59:18Speaker 3: kind of like a latchkey kid. He because his mom
- 59:21Speaker 3: works so much. Where is his sister? Why bother giving
- 59:24Speaker 3: him a sister if we're just gonna drop her halfway through?
- 59:28Speaker 5: But because she doesn't even go to the games, No
- 59:31Speaker 5: she's too young.
- 59:32Speaker 3: No, No, that was when I noticed Andrea was gone.
- 59:34Speaker 3: I was like, where the hell is this kid there?
- 59:37Speaker 3: But but to his mom's credit. I mean, she doesn't
- 59:39Speaker 3: miss a game. She is thereue usually with some like
- 59:44Speaker 3: pretty great outfits too. She's coming straight from the napkin
- 59:47Speaker 3: factory looking hot.
- 59:49Speaker 5: Yeah, very very big business, you know, very sister's doing
- 59:53Speaker 5: it for themselves. You know she looks great.
- 59:55Speaker 3: Last statement hats napkin factory.
- 59:58Speaker 2: Huh Yeah. Anyway, So to answer your question, Lindy, I
- 1:00:02Speaker 2: think that is feminism. She works at an her napkin factory. Okay,
- 1:00:07Speaker 2: this is one where we see coach Joe hurling basketballs
- 1:00:11Speaker 2: at one of the players, this kid Stuart, who will
- 1:00:14Speaker 2: eventually become Josh's best friend in the later sequels. So
- 1:00:18Speaker 2: then Coach Joe gets fired off screen because the next
- 1:00:22Speaker 2: thing we know, the school is looking for a new coach.
- 1:00:24Speaker 3: Okay, wait, so I know this is I know we
- 1:00:26Speaker 3: keep it in tro but like the acting job that
- 1:00:30Speaker 3: actress Nicola Cavendish is asked to do here as Principal
- 1:00:34Speaker 3: Pepper Is, I stopped it and showed it to Grant
- 1:00:38Speaker 3: because I was just I was blown away at how
- 1:00:41Speaker 3: because she's doing again like the Disney Channel Adult character
- 1:00:45Speaker 3: where she's like, oh my gosh, you have a dog
- 1:00:49Speaker 3: and he's gotta come to the game, and then the
- 1:00:52Speaker 3: next line out of her mouth, she's witnessing the coach,
- 1:00:55Speaker 3: you know, doing this sort of like coded abusive behavior,
- 1:00:58Speaker 3: but he's also whipping basketballs at a kid. And then
- 1:01:01Speaker 3: her voice lowers an octave and she goes, that's enough, Joe,
- 1:01:06Speaker 3: that's quite enough.
- 1:01:07Speaker 4: And that's like, oh, like.
- 1:01:09Speaker 5: She's seen him do it before, almost like or she's like,
- 1:01:13Speaker 5: it's not necessarily surprising to her to see this coach
- 1:01:17Speaker 5: behaving poorly.
- 1:01:18Speaker 4: It was a very weird scene.
- 1:01:19Speaker 3: I was surprised. I was happy at least that they
- 1:01:22Speaker 3: do fire the coach, but it's like, yeah, they should
- 1:01:24Speaker 3: have gone farther. Yeah, they should go to the weird
- 1:01:27Speaker 3: court that we learned later is in this town. I
- 1:01:30Speaker 3: love the court scene, my favorite.
- 1:01:32Speaker 2: Scene from basketball court to judicial court.
- 1:01:36Speaker 3: Yeah, it's so amazing because it's like at that point,
- 1:01:39Speaker 3: you're like the movies should have just ended, but it's
- 1:01:42Speaker 3: still happened.
- 1:01:44Speaker 2: There's a whole other sequence. Anyways, Okay, I'm gonna try
- 1:01:47Speaker 2: to speed through the rest of this. We so eventful,
- 1:01:52Speaker 2: So much happens. Okay, So Arthur Cheney gets hired as
- 1:01:55Speaker 2: the new coach, and he does a great job getting
- 1:01:58Speaker 2: them to work together as a team. Then there's the
- 1:02:01Speaker 2: next game where Buddy does his trick at the halftime show,
- 1:02:07Speaker 2: and it's partly because Josh is so nice. He's not
- 1:02:11Speaker 2: like that abuse of evil clown. He encourages Buddy because
- 1:02:14Speaker 2: initially he has performance anxiety. Buddy does and he's like, no, no, no,
- 1:02:18Speaker 2: you're such a good boy, you can do this, and
- 1:02:20Speaker 2: he does the trick and everyone cheers.
- 1:02:22Speaker 4: I loved that.
- 1:02:22Speaker 3: I loved that Airbud was like they added that little
- 1:02:25Speaker 3: beat for him because it's so and it's like it
- 1:02:29Speaker 3: is all very ironic that like part of the part
- 1:02:32Speaker 3: of the lesson in the movie is like, oh, we
- 1:02:33Speaker 3: maybe shouldn't force this doctor perform, when in fact that
- 1:02:36Speaker 3: is like why the movie exists, is forced to get
- 1:02:39Speaker 3: doctor performed. But I like that Josh was like, of
- 1:02:42Speaker 3: course Airbud would get nervous. Then when he's been in
- 1:02:45Speaker 3: performance settings before, it had been like right before, he's
- 1:02:47Speaker 3: going to be abused, traumatizing.
- 1:02:49Speaker 4: Yeah, this guy that.
- 1:02:51Speaker 2: Makes sense, but now he's a star truly. So then
- 1:02:54Speaker 2: there's another game. There's a couple of seconds left, I
- 1:02:57Speaker 2: think the team is one point down. Josh has ball.
- 1:03:00Speaker 2: He tries to make a three pointer. He biffs it
- 1:03:03Speaker 2: and they lose, So Josh is kind of beating himself
- 1:03:06Speaker 2: up about it, but coach Arthur gives Josh a pep
- 1:03:09Speaker 2: talk to play from the heart, and so the team
- 1:03:13Speaker 2: starts playing really well. They qualify for finals against the
- 1:03:17Speaker 2: opposing team that that bully kid Larry is now on
- 1:03:21Speaker 2: because his like bully dad pulls him off the team
- 1:03:24Speaker 2: and moves him to.
- 1:03:25Speaker 5: Moves their whole family to Spokane, Washington. Yeah, which is
- 1:03:30Speaker 5: in eastern Washington. You know this is taking place in
- 1:03:32Speaker 5: western Washington because of the lush greenery. Eastern Washington's on
- 1:03:35Speaker 5: the other side of the mountains. Entirely moves their whole
- 1:03:37Speaker 5: family to Spokane so that Larry can play middle school
- 1:03:41Speaker 5: basketball for the Warriors. That's wild Larry's dad. Yeah, that's
- 1:03:46Speaker 5: really something.
- 1:03:47Speaker 3: Level of pettiness here too. Four end seed.
- 1:03:50Speaker 4: Spokane is really far away. It's far. It's not like
- 1:03:55Speaker 4: they move to a different suburb of Seattle now, they
- 1:03:57Speaker 4: moved to the far corner of the state. It's like
- 1:04:00Speaker 4: at least a six hour drive.
- 1:04:02Speaker 5: A mountain range to get away from air and Bud
- 1:04:06Speaker 5: and Arthur Cheney and Josh Okay, it's like reverse Oregon
- 1:04:10Speaker 5: trail to the opposite.
- 1:04:11Speaker 4: Side of the state. It's almost Idaho like it is.
- 1:04:14Speaker 4: You can go to your grocery shoping in Idaho if
- 1:04:17Speaker 4: you live in SPOKEMP.
- 1:04:18Speaker 5: It's true.
- 1:04:19Speaker 3: It's like, I mean, not that this movie is has
- 1:04:22Speaker 3: any interest in doing this with the bully character, but
- 1:04:24Speaker 3: you're like, that's gotta be tough on Larry with a
- 1:04:27Speaker 3: dad who's whose self worth is so tied up in
- 1:04:30Speaker 3: your youth basketball career.
- 1:04:32Speaker 5: Frankly explains everything you need to know about Larry and
- 1:04:35Speaker 5: his behavior. I feel bad for the guys. Poor Larry,
- 1:04:38Speaker 5: poor kid. Yeah.
- 1:04:41Speaker 2: So then the clown whose name we finally learn is
- 1:04:46Speaker 2: Norm's snively pretty good villain name. He gets wind of
- 1:04:51Speaker 2: the fact that the team mascot of this middle school
- 1:04:56Speaker 2: basketball team who can shoot hoops because there's like this
- 1:04:59Speaker 2: whole news story about it.
- 1:05:01Speaker 5: Yes, he finds out about it because the middle school
- 1:05:04Speaker 5: basketball game is on is on TP.
- 1:05:08Speaker 2: And he's like, wait a minute, that's my dog. So
- 1:05:11Speaker 2: Norm goes to Josh's house and talks to his mom, Jackie,
- 1:05:15Speaker 2: to be like, you have my dog. See here are
- 1:05:18Speaker 2: his papers.
- 1:05:20Speaker 4: And Jackie's in a vulnerable moment, she's feeling a little
- 1:05:22Speaker 4: bit resentful of the dog because she has just found
- 1:05:25Speaker 4: all of her buried newspapers in the yard.
- 1:05:26Speaker 5: Yes that's right, Yes, which Airbud had buried due to
- 1:05:29Speaker 5: newspaper based PTSD. Can I say a couple of things
- 1:05:32Speaker 5: about the scene. First of all, norm is so menacing
- 1:05:36Speaker 5: and he walks into her backyard, so he's like fully
- 1:05:39Speaker 5: on her property. Scares her a little bit because she's
- 1:05:42Speaker 5: like discovering the newspaper situation and doing some gardening and
- 1:05:45Speaker 5: then holds up like a flyer of him and Airbud
- 1:05:48Speaker 5: could be any golden retriever. This is not proof of anything,
- 1:05:51Speaker 5: by the way. And then it's like, that's my dog.
- 1:05:53Speaker 5: I have the papers to prove it. First of all,
- 1:05:56Speaker 5: fake Eleana Douglas. You start with get the fuck off
- 1:05:58Speaker 5: my property. I don't know who you are. I'm calling
- 1:06:01Speaker 5: the police instead. She handswered the dog over. Is pretty
- 1:06:06Speaker 5: wild to me immediately, no resistance whatsoever. And you know
- 1:06:10Speaker 5: I know that as women were all taught to be compliant,
- 1:06:13Speaker 5: but not me when it comes to Airbud. I'd be
- 1:06:15Speaker 5: fighting back. And I also would like to say something else.
- 1:06:18Speaker 5: I conferred with a lost dog expert, my husband who
- 1:06:22Speaker 5: works at the Animal Shelterer here in the DC area,
- 1:06:26Speaker 5: And I was like, this would never happen like this.
- 1:06:28Speaker 5: The person would not just show up and be like,
- 1:06:30Speaker 5: this is my dog. I have a single picture of it,
- 1:06:33Speaker 5: and then when I try to get it to come
- 1:06:36Speaker 5: to me, it growls and goes it bananas when.
- 1:06:39Speaker 4: It sees me.
- 1:06:40Speaker 5: And he was like, no, you'd be asking, this is
- 1:06:43Speaker 5: what my expert said.
- 1:06:45Speaker 4: He said, you'd have to. I mean, there's like no due.
- 1:06:47Speaker 5: Process going on here. Hello, Okay, so you'd be asking like, Norm,
- 1:06:52Speaker 5: what have you done? Can you show me lost reports?
- 1:06:55Speaker 5: Did you report the dog loss to local animal shelters?
- 1:06:58Speaker 5: Is the dog microchip? I don't know what the coorschip
- 1:07:00Speaker 5: situation was in nineteen ninety seven, so we can let
- 1:07:02Speaker 5: that one go. But do you have photos of you
- 1:07:04Speaker 5: and this dog? And he does won and it's Airbud
- 1:07:07Speaker 5: in a clown costume. Again, that could be any golden retriever. Okay,
- 1:07:13Speaker 5: you'd really need to show some evidence that not only
- 1:07:18Speaker 5: is it your dog, with that you had gone through
- 1:07:20Speaker 5: some sort of process to find your lost dog, which
- 1:07:24Speaker 5: Norm has not done until he thinks he can make
- 1:07:26Speaker 5: a buck off of it. Meanwhile, again, I would refer
- 1:07:29Speaker 5: the court to earlier in the movie when Josh is
- 1:07:33Speaker 5: doing his due diligence. He's hanging up the found dog posters. Okay, now, sure,
- 1:07:37Speaker 5: did Airbud tear him down? Yes, but that's not on Josh.
- 1:07:39Speaker 4: He did his part.
- 1:07:40Speaker 5: He tried to find this dog's owner. If anything, now
- 1:07:43Speaker 5: it's been months.
- 1:07:44Speaker 4: If anything, Airbud tearing the flyers down is more evidence
- 1:07:48Speaker 4: that he does that. He should not go with the clown. Yeah,
- 1:07:51Speaker 4: and he should stay with Josh.
- 1:07:52Speaker 5: I mean he doesn't even he doesn't have any witnesses
- 1:07:54Speaker 5: like Norm doesn't have any witnesses that saw him with
- 1:07:56Speaker 5: this dog. Like he just doesn't do anything except show
- 1:07:59Speaker 5: up menaces woman and wave a piece of paper in
- 1:08:03Speaker 5: her face and then take the dog. It never would
- 1:08:05Speaker 5: happen this way. I just want the audience to understand.
- 1:08:08Speaker 3: Another very very disappointing thing from Miss Jackie fram letting
- 1:08:13Speaker 3: down the family yet again. She's mad that she doesn't
- 1:08:15Speaker 3: know about Heaven's Gate. Well, guess what, like borrow a
- 1:08:19Speaker 3: paper at the napkin factory, turn on the.
- 1:08:21Speaker 4: News, go to the library.
- 1:08:23Speaker 5: Jackie, Come on, man, literally.
- 1:08:25Speaker 3: This dog is raising your child for you. Could you
- 1:08:28Speaker 3: find an ounce of effort to fight for him?
- 1:08:31Speaker 5: Can I say something else, like, what is the plan here? Norm?
- 1:08:34Speaker 5: As if Airbud is gonna do basketball for you, you're
- 1:08:38Speaker 5: such an asshole to him. Airbud has autonomy. We've seen it, Okay,
- 1:08:46Speaker 5: So the whole thing's driving me nuts. I'm like, there's
- 1:08:48Speaker 5: no way that not only is Airbud gonna willingly go
- 1:08:52Speaker 5: with Norm, but that he's gonna do basketball for this
- 1:08:55Speaker 5: man in commercial antics game.
- 1:08:58Speaker 4: Please give me a break.
- 1:08:59Speaker 2: Next time we see him. Because what happens is Norm
- 1:09:02Speaker 2: takes Buddy, yeah, and Josh is devastated. So Josh goes
- 1:09:06Speaker 2: to Norm Sniveley's house where he's keeping Buddy chained up
- 1:09:10Speaker 2: in the mud next to a stack of Budweiser cam
- 1:09:13Speaker 2: Very Wizard of Oz five's here, and Norm is on
- 1:09:16Speaker 2: the phone being like, we can't shoot that commercial on April.
- 1:09:20Speaker 2: We're going on tour, and it's like, how.
- 1:09:22Speaker 5: Did you How did you book a tour already? Did
- 1:09:25Speaker 5: you get a dog agent all of a sudden?
- 1:09:27Speaker 3: Well, and also just I mean whatever, like these movies
- 1:09:31Speaker 3: are always contradictory, but like again, just having Norm Snivey
- 1:09:34Speaker 3: do essentially what Buddy's trainer is doing, you know, be like, oh,
- 1:09:39Speaker 3: let's get this dog to work in the entertainment industry,
- 1:09:41Speaker 3: which is presented as the act of a sicico in
- 1:09:43Speaker 3: this movie, when again, we wouldn't be watching the movie
- 1:09:47Speaker 3: if someone had not done that. And we'll talk about
- 1:09:50Speaker 3: his trader too, because there's a lot of lore that
- 1:09:52Speaker 3: going on there as well.
- 1:09:53Speaker 4: Yeah, there's there's actually this part where what Josh misses
- 1:09:57Speaker 4: his three pointer and then he gets a pep talk
- 1:09:58Speaker 4: from the coach where the co which is like, look
- 1:10:00Speaker 4: at Buddy, he doesn't care about his point average, which
- 1:10:04Speaker 4: by the way, is one hundred percent from the field.
- 1:10:07Speaker 5: Buddy does not miss one single shot. I'm sorry, but
- 1:10:10Speaker 5: you don't know that about him. You don't know that
- 1:10:13Speaker 5: about him.
- 1:10:14Speaker 4: But he's like, this dog doesn't care about being MVP.
- 1:10:17Speaker 4: He's doing it for the love of the game. Like, no,
- 1:10:20Speaker 4: he is not. He's doing it because you guys are
- 1:10:22Speaker 4: making him do it.
- 1:10:24Speaker 3: It's the only way that he receives love from people. Right, Yeah,
- 1:10:30Speaker 3: it's sad, it's so complicated.
- 1:10:33Speaker 2: Yeah. Anyway, so Josh rescues Buddy from Norm. They run off.
- 1:10:40Speaker 2: Norm is chasing them in his clown truck which is
- 1:10:43Speaker 2: actively falling apart. The breaks, the steering wheel, all this
- 1:10:46Speaker 2: stuff are falling off back.
- 1:10:48Speaker 3: When we were a proper country and we invested in
- 1:10:50Speaker 3: a proper car chase in the middle of a movie
- 1:10:52Speaker 3: that does not require it. Yes, beautiful, loved it.
- 1:10:55Speaker 2: Yes, And then Norm drives his truck into a lake
- 1:10:59Speaker 2: because the steering wheel and brakes are gone.
- 1:11:01Speaker 3: Fly off one third of the movie's budget, right there,
- 1:11:04Speaker 3: no reason.
- 1:11:05Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:11:07Speaker 2: Josh realizes that if he brings Buddy home, Norm will
- 1:11:11Speaker 2: just come back and take him again, so he has
- 1:11:15Speaker 2: to like set him free. He does the whole like, go.
- 1:11:19Speaker 4: On, get it. I don't watch anymore.
- 1:11:21Speaker 5: Doesn't you understand?
- 1:11:22Speaker 3: What's that movie with the Sasquatch.
- 1:11:24Speaker 4: Harry and the Henderson's Okay, hey, Harry and the Henderson's buddy,
- 1:11:27Speaker 4: so much harder than you need to. I this was
- 1:11:31Speaker 4: actually unbearable to watch.
- 1:11:32Speaker 5: I couldn't.
- 1:11:33Speaker 4: With my own baby boy curled up like a doughnut
- 1:11:36Speaker 4: in his bed next to me, I was like, I can't,
- 1:11:38Speaker 4: and I was screaming at Josh talk to one adult,
- 1:11:44Speaker 4: because please, the evil clown has just committed attempted vehicular.
- 1:11:49Speaker 5: Manslaughter, dogslaughter, daughter slaughter, yes, if not first degree homicide.
- 1:11:56Speaker 4: And this man is not getting the dog back. It's
- 1:12:01Speaker 4: just so Harriet.
- 1:12:02Speaker 5: It's the most Harry and the Henderson's I've ever seen.
- 1:12:05Speaker 5: It's so terrible, and the greatest devastation of all is
- 1:12:09Speaker 5: that Josh violates airbuds trust. He uses the basketball for evil.
- 1:12:15Speaker 5: He's like trying to get air butt. He like hires
- 1:12:18Speaker 5: the water taxi to take him to some random islands
- 1:12:20Speaker 5: where he leaves Buddy on an island. Yeah, and he's like,
- 1:12:24Speaker 5: go away. Don't you understand I don't want you anymore.
- 1:12:26Speaker 5: He's like trying to get him to like, somehow, you
- 1:12:29Speaker 5: roughing it in the woods for the rest of your
- 1:12:31Speaker 5: life is better than just us figuring out between human
- 1:12:34Speaker 5: beings where the dogs should live.
- 1:12:35Speaker 4: Controversial opinion. The dogs better off living with the clown
- 1:12:39Speaker 4: that he himself on an island.
- 1:12:42Speaker 5: And western there are bears. Okay, dude, what the hell?
- 1:12:45Speaker 5: So anyway, so then Josh cannot get Buddy to leave
- 1:12:48Speaker 5: him alone because they're best friends. Josh, so he chucks
- 1:12:51Speaker 5: the basketball into the woods to get Buddy to go
- 1:12:54Speaker 5: chase it. And I was like, oh, hell, oh, that
- 1:12:55Speaker 5: is unforgivable. You demon child.
- 1:12:58Speaker 3: This is like, if this dog gets the water and
- 1:13:00Speaker 3: starts paddling, I'm gonna fucking lose it. And sure he
- 1:13:04Speaker 3: gets in the water. And I was sobbing.
- 1:13:07Speaker 5: I was so annoyed just watching this because I was like,
- 1:13:09Speaker 5: you think, getting the water, Taxi's gonna stop a Golden
- 1:13:11Speaker 5: Retriever from swimming after you.
- 1:13:14Speaker 4: And of course the air Bud jumps into the water
- 1:13:16Speaker 4: and is like, Josh, come back. The dog playing basketball.
- 1:13:20Speaker 4: I could believe the Golden Retriever not swimming all the
- 1:13:24Speaker 4: way across whatever, uh, channel Ford this to chase the boil.
- 1:13:32Speaker 4: No chance that dog believable. The dog would not, like
- 1:13:37Speaker 4: Buddy gives up swimming after one point five seconds and
- 1:13:40Speaker 4: it's like, no, not not the Golden Retrievers that I know.
- 1:13:43Speaker 5: I don't think so, honey, I don't think so.
- 1:13:45Speaker 4: I don't think so. He would. That dog would swim
- 1:13:48Speaker 4: all the way back to Josh's house.
- 1:13:49Speaker 5: I'm just saying, Fernfield, where everything is possible.
- 1:13:52Speaker 3: No one treats Buddy, right, Everyone like Buddy, he's just
- 1:13:57Speaker 3: been through it. Everyone leaves everyone leaves him.
- 1:13:59Speaker 4: Yeah, it's so sad, it's so unnecessary. Yeah, and I
- 1:14:03Speaker 4: hate that thing. Where a child in a movie will
- 1:14:07Speaker 4: just go rogue and think that he knows best. Talk
- 1:14:11Speaker 4: to a lawyer before you abandon your dog on an island.
- 1:14:16Speaker 3: I would say, in Josh's defense, look at whose behavior
- 1:14:20Speaker 3: is being modeled at home. The clown could print out
- 1:14:23Speaker 3: on a laser jet, I'm allowed to hit this dog
- 1:14:25Speaker 3: with a car, And she'd be like, sorry, Josh, there's
- 1:14:27Speaker 3: nothing I can do. I guess there's nothing that can
- 1:14:30Speaker 3: be done.
- 1:14:30Speaker 5: The laws a lot, Josh, I know, sir.
- 1:14:33Speaker 2: Yeah, we'll talk more about his mom. But after Josh
- 1:14:37Speaker 2: abandons Buddy on an island, we cut to the finals
- 1:14:41Speaker 2: basketball game. It's Josh's team versus the other team that
- 1:14:45Speaker 2: that little shit Larry's Warriors.
- 1:14:48Speaker 4: Warriors, yeah yeah.
- 1:14:50Speaker 2: And Josh's team is losing pretty bad. Two players on
- 1:14:53Speaker 2: Josh's team are injured, another one gets a foul and
- 1:14:55Speaker 2: has to sit out, and then the rest of the
- 1:14:57Speaker 2: team is out with chicken pox that we learn in
- 1:15:00Speaker 2: throwaway line.
- 1:15:01Speaker 3: Of dialogue ax chicken pocks.
- 1:15:03Speaker 2: Yes, of course, so now they only have four players.
- 1:15:07Speaker 2: But just then Buddy shows up. Does anyone see where
- 1:15:10Speaker 2: this is going? They put Buddy in uniform to play
- 1:15:16Speaker 2: in the game and the refs and the opposing team
- 1:15:19Speaker 2: are like, what the heck dogs can't play basketball, And
- 1:15:23Speaker 2: then coach Arthur is like, check the rule book. You
- 1:15:26Speaker 2: won't find anything that says a dog can't play And
- 1:15:30Speaker 2: then the ref is like, he's right, there's nothing in
- 1:15:32Speaker 2: the rule book that says a dog can't play basketball.
- 1:15:35Speaker 2: So Buddy starts playing in the game, and he's just
- 1:15:40Speaker 2: what the team needed, because they make a huge comeback,
- 1:15:44Speaker 2: and Buddy nearly ties the game with a couple of
- 1:15:46Speaker 2: foul shots, and then Josh has the ball with a
- 1:15:49Speaker 2: few seconds left in the game. It's sort of like
- 1:15:51Speaker 2: a mirror from what we saw earlier, and he takes
- 1:15:54Speaker 2: the shot and this time he makes the three pointer
- 1:15:57Speaker 2: and they win the game. But that it's not the
- 1:16:00Speaker 2: end of the movie.
- 1:16:01Speaker 5: So it's not just really quickly. The whole that final
- 1:16:04Speaker 5: basketball game is so funny. The other team is so
- 1:16:08Speaker 5: despondent that this they're just getting. This dog is running
- 1:16:11Speaker 5: wild on their asses like Airbud is everywhere. He's a
- 1:16:14Speaker 5: real threat in the paint. He's a threat from outside
- 1:16:17Speaker 5: like he has. He's been playing for two minutes and
- 1:16:19Speaker 5: already has three assists. He's a he's a menace on
- 1:16:22Speaker 5: the court, okay, and the other coach is just yelling,
- 1:16:26Speaker 5: will someone guard that dog? Guard that dog? So funny,
- 1:16:33Speaker 5: and my husband was just like, dee up, Larry, deep up,
- 1:16:37Speaker 5: and then fucking Larry fouls Airbud and what might be
- 1:16:40Speaker 5: like the saddest thing saddest fouel I ever.
- 1:16:44Speaker 3: I was shocked that they were willing to have a
- 1:16:47Speaker 3: child foul Airport.
- 1:16:49Speaker 4: So it was so nuts.
- 1:16:50Speaker 5: And then yeah, but then they win, and it's very
- 1:16:52Speaker 5: funny at the end because Larry walks off like sort
- 1:16:54Speaker 5: of comically hunched over, like a like if you were
- 1:16:58Speaker 5: just taking improv and learn that that's what you should
- 1:17:00Speaker 5: look like when you're sad like sort of like Michael
- 1:17:04Speaker 5: Sarah and walking home and rest of the development when
- 1:17:07Speaker 5: they play Christmas Time is here, my husband and I
- 1:17:09Speaker 5: call that when people are sad like that, we call
- 1:17:10Speaker 5: it Christmas Time because that's the song they play. What
- 1:17:14Speaker 5: George Michael is like walking home. So Larry's just like
- 1:17:18Speaker 5: despondently haunched over leaving the court. But that's what you
- 1:17:21Speaker 5: get from moving your whole family to Spokane.
- 1:17:23Speaker 3: I guess you know.
- 1:17:24Speaker 4: I'd like to say that Airbud not only has basketball skills,
- 1:17:27Speaker 4: he also has basketball IQ. He uses his mind and
- 1:17:31Speaker 4: he uses his dog wiles to help win the game.
- 1:17:36Speaker 4: Like there's a part in the game when Airbud has
- 1:17:40Speaker 4: to do a jump ball and Airbud is standing at
- 1:17:43Speaker 4: two foot six. A jump ball is where there's a
- 1:17:47Speaker 4: contested ball, and so the ref throws the ball in
- 1:17:49Speaker 4: the air and two players. If you're not a basketball head,
- 1:17:53Speaker 4: there's no way Airbud's winning this jump ball. But then
- 1:17:56Speaker 4: the moment of truth, Airbud goes and then the opposed
- 1:18:03Speaker 4: player is like what, he's so startled. He's startled.
- 1:18:07Speaker 3: He played five D chess. He's a great player. I
- 1:18:12Speaker 3: love that sequence so much. They like they directed the
- 1:18:16Speaker 3: hell out of it. Airbud is a star. It's funny
- 1:18:20Speaker 3: he's playing. He Larry fouling him really took me out.
- 1:18:24Speaker 5: I was not.
- 1:18:26Speaker 3: I was like this this and then he still lost
- 1:18:29Speaker 3: the love and respect of his father. Anyways, Like Airbud's
- 1:18:34Speaker 3: out there and his little sneakers like each it.
- 1:18:35Speaker 4: Larry and.
- 1:18:38Speaker 3: You assaulted and then got dunked on by a dog,
- 1:18:41Speaker 3: Like Larry is never going to recover from this.
- 1:18:44Speaker 4: Well, and the dog also gets rams Larry right in
- 1:18:47Speaker 4: his nuts too.
- 1:18:48Speaker 2: Yes, yeah, true, in what should have been a foul,
- 1:18:50Speaker 2: but Airbud does not get fouled at all.
- 1:18:53Speaker 3: There's no rule that says a dog can't ram into
- 1:18:57Speaker 3: a fellow players private.
- 1:18:59Speaker 5: Yeah, you should have been a flagrant. Should have been
- 1:19:01Speaker 5: a technical.
- 1:19:02Speaker 4: Also, when the when they were first checking the rule
- 1:19:06Speaker 4: book and they decided that that the dog could play,
- 1:19:10Speaker 4: that Buddy could play, my husband goes, well, there's probably
- 1:19:13Speaker 4: a rule that you're not allowed to have your dick out.
- 1:19:18Speaker 4: You have to wear bottoms. But it's not wearing bottom.
- 1:19:21Speaker 3: No, he's loose.
- 1:19:22Speaker 2: Yeah, he's Donald ducking in just tops.
- 1:19:25Speaker 3: What a great film. So this is this is the
- 1:19:27Speaker 3: ex So the movie is not quite over. It seems
- 1:19:30Speaker 3: like the movie's about to be over. But yeah, the
- 1:19:33Speaker 3: movies like buckle it because there's ten unpredictable minutes coming up.
- 1:19:38Speaker 2: Yeah, because Norm the clown has shown up to the
- 1:19:42Speaker 2: game demanding Buddy back. But his papers claiming Buddy is
- 1:19:48Speaker 2: his property are all soggy from when he fell in
- 1:19:51Speaker 2: the mud and the lake.
- 1:19:53Speaker 4: By the way, whichever one of you it was that
- 1:19:55Speaker 4: said that that car chase serve no purpose. That's may
- 1:19:58Speaker 4: I direct your attention true the ziplock of soggy dog papers.
- 1:20:04Speaker 3: Yeah, planting pad which before, of course before they were soggy,
- 1:20:07Speaker 3: would have definitely solved it.
- 1:20:09Speaker 5: It's not a DNA tesk.
- 1:20:11Speaker 2: Come on, man, I don't know what papers he's talking about.
- 1:20:14Speaker 3: I mean, dogs do have pay. I had to turn
- 1:20:16Speaker 3: in papers for my dog recently and it was this
- 1:20:20Speaker 3: really but like I had to prove that he was
- 1:20:25Speaker 3: I didn't prove that he his mine. And then I
- 1:20:26Speaker 3: had to prove that he had been fixed. And I
- 1:20:31Speaker 3: knew he'd been fixed, but I couldn't find like a
- 1:20:33Speaker 3: record of him being fixed in twenty nineteen. So I
- 1:20:36Speaker 3: did go to the vet and literally, it's the funniest
- 1:20:38Speaker 3: piece of paper. It's hanging on my fridge. It says, wait,
- 1:20:41Speaker 3: I'm gonna go get it.
- 1:20:43Speaker 4: Okay.
- 1:20:46Speaker 5: Also what did the papers say? Because it becomes clear
- 1:20:50Speaker 5: that Norm never named He never gave air Bud a name, right,
- 1:20:55Speaker 5: because when he confronts the mom in the backyard, he's like,
- 1:20:57Speaker 5: that's my dog. Uh, and then ate and it's like,
- 1:21:01Speaker 5: oh it's blue because he sees it on the paint can.
- 1:21:03Speaker 5: It's like, what does what do the papers say? You
- 1:21:05Speaker 5: never named the dog?
- 1:21:07Speaker 4: Norm?
- 1:21:07Speaker 3: Great point maybe the papers might sound something like this,
- 1:21:11Speaker 3: Dear Sirs, I examined Sonny on March twenty six five.
- 1:21:18Speaker 3: Sonny has no testicles, which is which is, which is
- 1:21:24Speaker 3: consistent with having been neutered in the past, and then
- 1:21:27Speaker 3: just the doctor's signature. I pay thee forty dollars to
- 1:21:29Speaker 3: give you that piece of paper. It is the funniest
- 1:21:32Speaker 3: thing that I've ever paid for.
- 1:21:36Speaker 5: I hope that that's what norm.
- 1:21:38Speaker 3: Dear Sirs, air Bud has no test.
- 1:21:43Speaker 5: This unnamed dog has no testicles.
- 1:21:48Speaker 4: Okay.
- 1:21:48Speaker 2: So Norm is like, I'll see you in court, and
- 1:21:52Speaker 2: then we cut to court and it's a hearing that
- 1:21:55Speaker 2: is goofy as hell. But basically Norm is like, this
- 1:21:58Speaker 2: dog is legally mine, and Josh is like, well, buddy
- 1:22:01Speaker 2: doesn't even like Norm because he was abusive. And then
- 1:22:05Speaker 2: Coach Arthur shows up to be like, let the dog decide.
- 1:22:10Speaker 2: So everyone goes outside.
- 1:22:11Speaker 4: Okay, can I just say hold on? The coach Arthur
- 1:22:15Speaker 4: walks into the courtroom. He was not there for most
- 1:22:19Speaker 4: of the hearing. He comes in at a pivotal moment
- 1:22:22Speaker 4: and he's like, I have something to say. The coach
- 1:22:25Speaker 4: is like, are you Arthur Cheney?
- 1:22:28Speaker 5: The judge from the next Yeah. The judge is like,
- 1:22:32Speaker 5: I remember you.
- 1:22:33Speaker 4: I was at the game against the Celtics when you
- 1:22:36Speaker 4: hit that turnaround jump shot. And then Arthur Chaney is like, yeah,
- 1:22:41Speaker 4: that's right, that's me. I think that you should let
- 1:22:43Speaker 4: the dog decide. The judge has no context for why
- 1:22:49Speaker 4: he's there. It's like if Sean Kemp walked into a
- 1:22:53Speaker 4: random court hearing.
- 1:22:56Speaker 5: Like divorce proceedings and was like, let the teenager choose
- 1:23:00Speaker 5: where he wants to live.
- 1:23:04Speaker 2: I didn't think of that.
- 1:23:05Speaker 4: So funny, it's so funny, so funny.
- 1:23:07Speaker 5: Well, the whole court, the whole court situation is well,
- 1:23:10Speaker 5: it's I eventually realized why so many people were there.
- 1:23:13Speaker 5: But there's never anyone just sitting in the gallery of
- 1:23:16Speaker 5: a courtroom. And I was like, there's truly nothing going
- 1:23:19Speaker 5: on in this town. If the whole town is showing
- 1:23:21Speaker 5: up to a dog custody bad Like, what is this
- 1:23:25Speaker 5: so awesome?
- 1:23:26Speaker 4: There?
- 1:23:27Speaker 3: This whole like courtroom is run on vibes and they
- 1:23:30Speaker 3: don't they don't really make any if it's like the judge,
- 1:23:35Speaker 3: what is the thing he says where he's like, normally
- 1:23:37Speaker 3: I wouldn't do this, but this is hilarious.
- 1:23:40Speaker 5: And so people come in my courtroom all the time
- 1:23:44Speaker 5: with terrible ideas about how I should rule, and this
- 1:23:46Speaker 5: time I like it, like.
- 1:23:48Speaker 3: It, so let's take He's just like, let's do a
- 1:23:51Speaker 3: silly one, yeah, court case.
- 1:23:53Speaker 2: Let's keep it wacky, let's keep it light.
- 1:23:55Speaker 4: It'll be fun.
- 1:23:56Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:23:57Speaker 2: So because he agrees to this, everyone goes outside. They
- 1:24:01Speaker 2: gather around Buddy. We're not sure who he's gonna choose
- 1:24:05Speaker 2: it first, because Buddy's like kind of going over to
- 1:24:09Speaker 2: Norm the clown, because he has rolled up newspaper, but
- 1:24:13Speaker 2: it's only so that Buddy can rip the newspaper to shreds.
- 1:24:17Speaker 2: And then he goes over to Josh. So the judge
- 1:24:20Speaker 2: awards custody to Josh of Buddy the dog, and that's
- 1:24:26Speaker 2: the end of the movie.
- 1:24:27Speaker 3: Finally, it's what a film.
- 1:24:30Speaker 4: And the judge is like, bailiffs remove this clown, and
- 1:24:34Speaker 4: then like three cops like bank the clown up and
- 1:24:37Speaker 4: carry him away, even though.
- 1:24:39Speaker 5: At this point they're outside on the front lawn.
- 1:24:41Speaker 4: Where are you removing him to?
- 1:24:42Speaker 5: He's outside, leave him, let's let him go.
- 1:24:45Speaker 4: I think he has to go to clown prison.
- 1:24:47Speaker 5: Oh, clown jail. Sure that makes a lot of sense, true,
- 1:24:50Speaker 5: I just I loved it. And as the credits for
- 1:24:51Speaker 5: role as you know, as Lindy mentioned earlier, they go
- 1:24:54Speaker 5: out of their way to tell you the basketball scenes
- 1:24:57Speaker 5: were not CGI air bu I really did do all
- 1:25:01Speaker 5: that stuff. They did not use any sort of like
- 1:25:04Speaker 5: trickery CGI trickery.
- 1:25:06Speaker 4: It's really impressive in all sincerity. I found the basketball
- 1:25:10Speaker 4: scenes believable. I felt like the dog, he's good. Yes,
- 1:25:13Speaker 4: I felt like he was really playing basketball. And like
- 1:25:17Speaker 4: I've seen other similar you know, cinema done with puppets
- 1:25:23Speaker 4: and trickery, and it's not as satisfying and it's not
- 1:25:26Speaker 4: as believable. Really, I really felt these practical effects. I
- 1:25:29Speaker 4: loved it. Not even practical effects.
- 1:25:31Speaker 5: Just a dog playing basketball, a dog playing basketball, just
- 1:25:34Speaker 5: a dog shooting the jah.
- 1:25:36Speaker 2: You love to see it. Let's take another quick break
- 1:25:38Speaker 2: and then we will come back to discuss further.
- 1:25:52Speaker 3: And we're back. I mean, okay, wait, can we talk okay?
- 1:25:56Speaker 3: I uh if we talk about the real Buddy for
- 1:25:58Speaker 3: a second, because it is a very complicated story. But
- 1:26:03Speaker 3: there is a lot of history, a lot of lore
- 1:26:07Speaker 3: attached to the dog. Buddy born approximately nineteen eighty eight,
- 1:26:12Speaker 3: past February tenth, nineteen ninety eight. He was I don't
- 1:26:18Speaker 3: quite know how to say this last name. He was
- 1:26:20Speaker 3: found by Kevin Decico.
- 1:26:22Speaker 2: Desico to Chico Chic yet check.
- 1:26:25Speaker 3: I don't want to call him Dasco, so I'm gonna
- 1:26:28Speaker 3: say Decico, Kevin Decico, I'll guess. He was found in
- 1:26:34Speaker 3: the Sierra Nevada in the summer of nineteen eighty nine.
- 1:26:39Speaker 3: Pulling from scholarly journal Wikipedia here, Desico adopted the Golden
- 1:26:44Speaker 3: retriever and brought him to San Diego, where he quickly
- 1:26:48Speaker 3: per Kevin. Because Kevin does write a memoir about this
- 1:26:53Speaker 3: in twenty twelve called Go Buddy, and he says that
- 1:26:58Speaker 3: he learned that like basically what Buddy does with the
- 1:27:03Speaker 3: basketball is like it's covered in olive oil and he
- 1:27:07Speaker 3: nips at it and it flies, and he learns how
- 1:27:09Speaker 3: to do this, and pretty quickly there are to me
- 1:27:13Speaker 3: some like circus vibes where like Kevin Desico knows he
- 1:27:18Speaker 3: has an opportunity with this dog and he starts. I
- 1:27:21Speaker 3: did some like background research into sort of how this
- 1:27:26Speaker 3: came to be, and it was like Kevin was very
- 1:27:29Speaker 3: trying to make this happen. He appeared at local events,
- 1:27:33Speaker 3: then it was state events. Eventually Buddy gets onto David
- 1:27:37Speaker 3: Letterman and people are loving Buddy. Buddy in the early
- 1:27:41Speaker 3: nineties was on It is so wild because I just
- 1:27:44Speaker 3: did an episode of Your Wrong About about Paul Rubins,
- 1:27:48Speaker 3: and their arcs are just so similar. So he works
- 1:27:51Speaker 3: and works and works, and he gets on Letterman. People
- 1:27:53Speaker 3: love him on Letterman. They're like, let's let's give this
- 1:27:55Speaker 3: dog a movie. And that's how this comes to pass.
- 1:27:59Speaker 3: So there is like show animal vibes to this. But
- 1:28:03Speaker 3: Kevin himself is a complicated figure because he gets basically
- 1:28:08Speaker 3: cut out of the air Bud franchise in spite of
- 1:28:10Speaker 3: the fact that he did create it in a way.
- 1:28:14Speaker 3: He didn't write the movie, but you know, he was
- 1:28:17Speaker 3: Buddy's handler. It's because Buddy was so popular on TV
- 1:28:20Speaker 3: that this movie was written. But then Buddy passes away
- 1:28:23Speaker 3: and Kevin sort of has no involvement from what I
- 1:28:26Speaker 3: can tell with the franchise moving forward. It seems like
- 1:28:29Speaker 3: he's had a very difficult life moving forward from there.
- 1:28:33Speaker 3: There were a few articles about him last year about
- 1:28:36Speaker 3: him having health struggles. He was unhoused for a time,
- 1:28:38Speaker 3: like he's had a challenging life post Buddy. But then
- 1:28:42Speaker 3: there's also very complicated stuff that we've talked about before.
- 1:28:47Speaker 3: I think we talked about it a lot during our
- 1:28:49Speaker 3: Babe episode. I think of just I think so that
- 1:28:52Speaker 3: we don't need to fully unpack here because there's so
- 1:28:54Speaker 3: much to talk about, but just the idea of like
- 1:28:57Speaker 3: using real life animals in movies, it's always gonna be
- 1:29:01Speaker 3: a hard sell for me. But like airbud is such
- 1:29:04Speaker 3: an effective sound because because Buddy is incredible.
- 1:29:09Speaker 5: He's so good at basketball and he seems like he's
- 1:29:11Speaker 5: having a great time. But in a way, it's like
- 1:29:15Speaker 5: this conversation we're having about should we use child actors
- 1:29:18Speaker 5: for anything at all? Ever too, probably not, because there's
- 1:29:23Speaker 5: just I mean that's a little bit different. It's very
- 1:29:25Speaker 5: ripe for exploitation and abuse. That is the exploitation piece
- 1:29:29Speaker 5: and the abuse piece also very true for animals, not
- 1:29:31Speaker 5: equating children with animals.
- 1:29:33Speaker 3: I guess it's like vulnerable perform Yeah, yeah, And there's
- 1:29:37Speaker 3: not really a lot that's like been said about this
- 1:29:39Speaker 3: with regards to Buddies specifically. I feel like probably because
- 1:29:44Speaker 3: of the time it came out, but just reading like
- 1:29:46Speaker 3: I don't know the directors did a lot of like
- 1:29:48Speaker 3: fun you know, twentieth anaversary, twenty fifth anniversary retrospectives about Airbud,
- 1:29:53Speaker 3: and they're mostly fun. It seems like it was a
- 1:29:55Speaker 3: fun set. Everyone had a nice time. But then you
- 1:29:57Speaker 3: just like, I don't know. I've read an anecdote where
- 1:30:00Speaker 3: he was like talking about Airbud getting the hoop at
- 1:30:04Speaker 3: the end of the basketball game at the climax of
- 1:30:06Speaker 3: the movie, and that it took like thirty takes to
- 1:30:08Speaker 3: get it and everyone was getting frustrated, and you're like, oh,
- 1:30:12Speaker 3: he's a.
- 1:30:12Speaker 5: Little guy, you know, air bottle loone.
- 1:30:17Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:30:18Speaker 2: I also read that Kevin Desicco claimed that he was
- 1:30:21Speaker 2: not paid anything for the first film and then yeah,
- 1:30:26Speaker 2: was basically cut out of the franchise after that, so.
- 1:30:30Speaker 5: He doesn't have like an ownership stake and the ip
- 1:30:33Speaker 5: of Airbud in any way, even though like he was
- 1:30:36Speaker 5: the one who originally trained this dog to do all the.
- 1:30:39Speaker 3: Right Definitely tragic, and there was an animal, a professional
- 1:30:43Speaker 3: animal trainer on the set luckily, who was also helping
- 1:30:47Speaker 3: with Airbuds like doubles. But yeah, I also saw that
- 1:30:51Speaker 3: Kevin Desico wasn't paid, which I'm like, I don't understand
- 1:30:54Speaker 3: how that could have happened when he was literally Buddy
- 1:30:56Speaker 3: s handler. I'm like, did Buddy make money like I'm
- 1:30:59Speaker 3: a doing he did airbud LLC Airbudlosi. But I'm also like,
- 1:31:04Speaker 3: Buddy making money is basically Kevid Tosicica making money. I
- 1:31:07Speaker 3: don't know. He's a very confusing character to me. I
- 1:31:10Speaker 3: know Buddy had to have been paid. There's no world
- 1:31:12Speaker 3: where Airbud was not compensated.
- 1:31:14Speaker 5: Yeah. Yeah, it just feels so different now, you know,
- 1:31:18Speaker 5: in the social media era. Sorry to sound like my
- 1:31:20Speaker 5: own grandmother, but like you know, animals go super viral
- 1:31:24Speaker 5: online and then there are in fact animal agents that
- 1:31:28Speaker 5: will help you monetize your pet. And then like the
- 1:31:31Speaker 5: worst thing is when you follow them on Instagram and
- 1:31:33Speaker 5: they start to get old, and then you start to
- 1:31:34Speaker 5: get sad because you know, eventually, like.
- 1:31:36Speaker 3: I mean, Grumpy Cat died ten years ago.
- 1:31:39Speaker 5: Yeah, but these days, I don't know, maybe in nineteen
- 1:31:44Speaker 5: ninety seven it just was different. It's like, if you
- 1:31:47Speaker 5: think about it, if Airbud were on Letterman during the
- 1:31:51Speaker 5: Instagram era, like think of all the brand deals that
- 1:31:54Speaker 5: Airbud would have had with Farmer's dog or whatever. But
- 1:31:58Speaker 5: it's like, I guess dog agents didn't exists. It should
- 1:32:01Speaker 5: dog agents exist probably.
- 1:32:03Speaker 3: Now it's like and now I think it's all AI
- 1:32:05Speaker 3: slop dogs anyways, Like I don't even know if dogs
- 1:32:08Speaker 3: aren't even working anymore. And how do you feel, Like,
- 1:32:10Speaker 3: how do I don't know?
- 1:32:15Speaker 4: I feel bad though now that I because I was
- 1:32:17Speaker 4: the one who went really hard for how good it
- 1:32:19Speaker 4: was to watch the real dog play basketball, and I
- 1:32:21Speaker 4: just want to say it was those fun ones. But like,
- 1:32:25Speaker 4: maybe we don't have to do it again. Maybe we
- 1:32:27Speaker 4: don't have to do a live action remake of yeah,
- 1:32:30Speaker 4: of air Bunds.
- 1:32:31Speaker 5: Definitely, there's a lot of art from the past that
- 1:32:33Speaker 5: we don't need to revisit, like remake or revisit or redo,
- 1:32:37Speaker 5: you know, where we can still appreciate for what it was.
- 1:32:39Speaker 4: I feel like there's other things like that where it's
- 1:32:41Speaker 4: like I don't know. They're like in the fifties they
- 1:32:45Speaker 4: used a radioactive waste as blush and look how beautiful,
- 1:32:50Speaker 4: Look how beautiful all the movie stars looked, and you
- 1:32:53Speaker 4: could be like, yes, they looked beautiful, and we don't
- 1:32:56Speaker 4: have to do that.
- 1:32:57Speaker 3: And they died moments after wrapped and may they rest
- 1:33:00Speaker 3: in power.
- 1:33:01Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean we can appreciate the beauty and then
- 1:33:04Speaker 4: we can say what we're gonna not probably not.
- 1:33:06Speaker 2: Do that, but let's not keep doing that.
- 1:33:08Speaker 5: We're gonna cee Gi the.
- 1:33:09Speaker 3: Dog, which we don't need to and there is. We
- 1:33:13Speaker 3: will put the link of the description if you want,
- 1:33:16Speaker 3: if you if you wish to know more about the
- 1:33:18Speaker 3: horrific production circumstances of the two thousand and eight directed
- 1:33:21Speaker 3: DVD film Snow Buddies, you could read that in the description.
- 1:33:26Speaker 5: But this was Paul Walker involved in that one.
- 1:33:28Speaker 2: No, he is a different that's a different snow dog movie.
- 1:33:31Speaker 2: I think that one might just be called snow Dogs.
- 1:33:33Speaker 3: That's that's the Kouba getting Junior one. Oh wait, what's
- 1:33:36Speaker 3: Tyro the Paul Walker snow Dogs movie is?
- 1:33:40Speaker 5: I thought he was involved in the one where the
- 1:33:42Speaker 5: dogs died. But I must have made that up because,
- 1:33:45Speaker 5: oh god, I hope there's.
- 1:33:46Speaker 3: Not two of them.
- 1:33:47Speaker 2: Oh he Okay, Paul Walker's in the movie called eight Below.
- 1:33:50Speaker 4: Okay, Oh that's right. I assume all the dogs.
- 1:33:54Speaker 3: Survived, let's hope.
- 1:33:57Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:33:58Speaker 3: The last thing to say about Buddy, so he does
- 1:34:00Speaker 3: pass away of cancer. It does not seem that his
- 1:34:04Speaker 3: illness is related to performance at very least. But it's
- 1:34:07Speaker 3: sad he dies a year later.
- 1:34:09Speaker 5: Yeah, he only got to enjoy his fame for like
- 1:34:12Speaker 5: a year, it sounds like.
- 1:34:13Speaker 3: And to add insult to injury, he was nominated for
- 1:34:16Speaker 3: one award, and only one award. It was a Kid's
- 1:34:19Speaker 3: Choice Award for Best Animal, and he lost to Salem
- 1:34:22Speaker 3: the Cat. Oh that's not even a real cat, who's
- 1:34:25Speaker 3: a puppet. He lost to a puppet, insulting, an unbelievable snub.
- 1:34:31Speaker 4: Horrific.
- 1:34:32Speaker 5: Oh my god, that's like Chadwick Boseman losing to Anthony
- 1:34:36Speaker 5: Hopkins after.
- 1:34:37Speaker 3: He died the Oscar. It's bad. Yeah, Oh I hate that. Yeah,
- 1:34:41Speaker 3: So that's buddy, now we know.
- 1:34:44Speaker 4: You know, I think Kevin has a case, by the way,
- 1:34:47Speaker 4: to get some kind of retroactive like life, they should
- 1:34:52Speaker 4: have to buy Kevin's life rights or something to use
- 1:34:55Speaker 4: for the entire franchise. Yeah, and I think the key
- 1:34:58Speaker 4: is Kevin should take the Disney operation to court and
- 1:35:01Speaker 4: all he needs is Arthur Cheney as his attorney.
- 1:35:07Speaker 5: Yeah, speak on it, speak on this.
- 1:35:09Speaker 4: To show up and tell the judge what's up.
- 1:35:11Speaker 5: He says to the judge. Let the royalties choose where
- 1:35:16Speaker 5: they want to flow. That's right to Kevin or to
- 1:35:19Speaker 5: Bob Iger. I think I think we know where the
- 1:35:22Speaker 5: royalties are going.
- 1:35:23Speaker 3: Yeah, I hope, I hope, Yeah, I hope Kevin's well,
- 1:35:26Speaker 3: it seems like he's having a hard time.
- 1:35:28Speaker 5: Yeah, poor guy.
- 1:35:29Speaker 4: I hate that, I really hate that.
- 1:35:31Speaker 5: Yeah. I just want to say, Kevin, I know we're
- 1:35:33Speaker 5: very we're feeling very fraught about the animal entertainment piece
- 1:35:37Speaker 5: of this. But he did a real good job training
- 1:35:39Speaker 5: that dog. Yeah, and he brought me a lot of
- 1:35:40Speaker 5: happiness when I was watching air. But I just want
- 1:35:42Speaker 5: you to know, if you're listening, which I'm sure you are,
- 1:35:45Speaker 5: Thank you, Thanks keV, Thank you, Kevin.
- 1:35:47Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:35:50Speaker 2: Can we talk about I guess Jackie Josh's mom? Sure?
- 1:35:55Speaker 5: What?
- 1:35:56Speaker 4: Yeah? What else?
- 1:35:56Speaker 3: What else is there to say about? I've had Jackie?
- 1:36:00Speaker 2: Well, Okay, this is a Disney movie. Within a live mom,
- 1:36:04Speaker 2: there is a parent who has passed away, and it's
- 1:36:06Speaker 2: the dad this time, which is pretty unusual for a
- 1:36:09Speaker 2: Disney movie.
- 1:36:10Speaker 5: There's always at least one dead parrot in a Disney.
- 1:36:12Speaker 2: Movie, right, almost always? Yes, canon, Now this happened recently,
- 1:36:17Speaker 2: where this where Jackie's husband passed away very tragically and violently.
- 1:36:23Speaker 3: He didn't need to be that bad.
- 1:36:25Speaker 2: I don't know. I don't think so. But this does
- 1:36:28Speaker 2: not seem to be affecting her, or if it is,
- 1:36:32Speaker 2: the movie doesn't care to explore that in any meaningful way.
- 1:36:36Speaker 2: She's busy with her napkin job and then her second job,
- 1:36:39Speaker 2: whatever that might be. Her whole storyline in the movie
- 1:36:43Speaker 2: is like where are my newspapers again? This movie could
- 1:36:46Speaker 2: have easily explored something a little And I get it.
- 1:36:49Speaker 2: It's a kid's movie. You don't want to go too
- 1:36:51Speaker 2: heavy and deep on too many things, but it's right there,
- 1:36:55Speaker 2: Like why wouldn't there be some sort of like moment
- 1:36:59Speaker 2: in which she and Josh bonded over the loss of Yeah,
- 1:37:03Speaker 2: over like grieving for Josh's father, Like it just is
- 1:37:08Speaker 2: so goofy.
- 1:37:09Speaker 5: Yeah, they don't show her struggling or grieving, and maybe
- 1:37:11Speaker 5: that's just that is her coping mechanism to be could
- 1:37:14Speaker 5: be relentlessly positive and happy. But really, the only time
- 1:37:17Speaker 5: she brings up the dad, she's just talking, saying to
- 1:37:19Speaker 5: the principle like, oh, he hasn't spoken since his dad died,
- 1:37:21Speaker 5: which Jackie hello and then she's like, but maybe he
- 1:37:26Speaker 5: just needs a hobby, like the tuba job or something,
- 1:37:29Speaker 5: and that's really And she doesn't even have that conversation
- 1:37:32Speaker 5: with Josh. She's like talking to the principle.
- 1:37:34Speaker 2: I think she just signs him up for band without
- 1:37:36Speaker 2: him knowing.
- 1:37:37Speaker 3: And again it's like she's in a very difficult circumstance.
- 1:37:41Speaker 3: I want to show Jackie race where I can, but
- 1:37:43Speaker 3: she's just like her her bedside manner is not good.
- 1:37:47Speaker 3: Like she there's that scene where she goes up to
- 1:37:49Speaker 3: Josh and he's upset because he's also like, I don't know,
- 1:37:53Speaker 3: I know this for her job, but like moving after
- 1:37:56Speaker 3: a loss that's severe and like being away from your
- 1:37:59Speaker 3: family and friends to be really hard. But she says, quote,
- 1:38:03Speaker 3: your dad wouldn't want you being all MOPI unquote.
- 1:38:06Speaker 4: So manipulative, who so evil?
- 1:38:09Speaker 3: And then and then make the dogs sleep outside. I
- 1:38:12Speaker 3: was like, she's a bit evil at times, like I, yeah, her.
- 1:38:16Speaker 5: Emotional regulation is definitely questionable. I understand why, but it
- 1:38:20Speaker 5: is very it's almost like kind of evil stepmother. I
- 1:38:24Speaker 5: mean she I know, she says actual mother, not stepmother,
- 1:38:26Speaker 5: to be like, I don't think your dad would like
- 1:38:28Speaker 5: that very much witty.
- 1:38:30Speaker 4: You know, it's weird.
- 1:38:31Speaker 2: I think it's a case of the movies, which is
- 1:38:35Speaker 2: what so many movies do, caring more about the male characters,
- 1:38:40Speaker 2: the little boy's relationship with his father, than it does
- 1:38:43Speaker 2: about any women or girls in the movies. They're just like, well,
- 1:38:48Speaker 2: he has to have a mom. She's gonna be at
- 1:38:50Speaker 2: work all the time at Napkin Factory, and she's gonna
- 1:38:54Speaker 2: be in a few scenes here and there, but mostly
- 1:38:58Speaker 2: it's just gonna be an unso provides child walking around
- 1:39:01Speaker 2: and shooting hoops with a dog like Josh, it spends
- 1:39:04Speaker 2: so much time unsupervised by an adult. He's always just
- 1:39:09Speaker 2: loose in the world. The dog is similarly loose, just
- 1:39:14Speaker 2: going all over the place.
- 1:39:15Speaker 5: Yeah, it's also never explained how Airbud makes it back
- 1:39:19Speaker 5: from that remote island in time for the basketball.
- 1:39:23Speaker 3: This is where mister water Taxi comes in. It's his story.
- 1:39:27Speaker 5: Or maybe he really did just swim the whole expanse
- 1:39:29Speaker 5: of that body of water.
- 1:39:30Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 1:39:31Speaker 5: But yeah, they're both just kind of out there doing whatever,
- 1:39:36Speaker 5: you know.
- 1:39:37Speaker 2: And then we've already touched on this. But like the
- 1:39:39Speaker 2: little sister, even to a lesser extent gets characterized.
- 1:39:43Speaker 3: And just she is ignored.
- 1:39:46Speaker 2: I don't even know her name, oh on Fred, but
- 1:39:48Speaker 2: it's only because I read stuff about the sequels that
- 1:39:51Speaker 2: she's in.
- 1:39:53Speaker 3: She's not based on the Airbud fan YouTube videos I
- 1:39:58Speaker 3: was watching. She is not a fan for a favorite.
- 1:40:02Speaker 3: She's pretty despose. They're not fans of Andrea. They're like,
- 1:40:05Speaker 3: she's a flop. She is bad at but like her brother,
- 1:40:08Speaker 3: she is bad at every sport she tries, which is
- 1:40:10Speaker 3: an interesting creative choice.
- 1:40:12Speaker 5: Yeah, good for her.
- 1:40:14Speaker 3: This family is just like full of losers. Anyways.
- 1:40:19Speaker 2: The other big thing I want to talk about with
- 1:40:20Speaker 2: this movie is its depiction of class, especially in regards
- 1:40:25Speaker 2: to Norm the Clown, because we have maybe the most
- 1:40:29Speaker 2: cartoonish villain of all time in a live action movie,
- 1:40:34Speaker 2: to the point where he's literally a clown. He is
- 1:40:37Speaker 2: abusive to animals, he hates children. There's all this stuff
- 1:40:41Speaker 2: that makes him completely unlikable and unsympathetic to the audience.
- 1:40:46Speaker 2: And on top of that, he is poor, and that's
- 1:40:49Speaker 2: supposed to be another thing that we don't like about him,
- 1:40:53Speaker 2: I think, which is a very common trope I feel like,
- 1:40:55Speaker 2: especially in children's media, but across all media thinks you
- 1:41:00Speaker 2: have like Sid and Toy story he lives on the
- 1:41:03Speaker 2: wrong side of town kind of thing. Yeah, and therefore
- 1:41:06Speaker 2: he's bad. And I feel like the idea here is that,
- 1:41:11Speaker 2: like the character is poor and it's his fault rather
- 1:41:15Speaker 2: than any systemic issue. And I feel like movies like
- 1:41:18Speaker 2: this imply that the character being poor is part of
- 1:41:23Speaker 2: what makes them a bad person.
- 1:41:25Speaker 4: Yeah, Okay, I don't. Can I just okay, look not
- 1:41:28Speaker 4: to be spicy, I agree with all of that. I
- 1:41:32Speaker 4: think that that's a real trope. I think that this
- 1:41:35Speaker 4: movie is certainly engaging in that trope. On the other hand,
- 1:41:38Speaker 4: can I just say to Norm the clown get a real.
- 1:41:41Speaker 5: Job or be a better clown? Right, he's not even
- 1:41:46Speaker 5: committed to his craft, you know.
- 1:41:47Speaker 4: But it's not like he's like I'm you know, I
- 1:41:50Speaker 4: can't work. He's going out and working birthday parties. He
- 1:41:54Speaker 4: just doesn't like it. So he's doing a bad job.
- 1:41:58Speaker 4: Like it's like, I don't know, man, maybe go work
- 1:42:00Speaker 4: at the napkin factory. I'm not saying that any of
- 1:42:05Speaker 4: this is your fault.
- 1:42:06Speaker 3: Yeah, I guess I've kind of followed the middle there,
- 1:42:08Speaker 3: because it is interesting that, like the reason he is
- 1:42:11Speaker 3: poor is ostensibly really because he is an artist quote unquote,
- 1:42:16Speaker 3: like he's in the arts, which many such cases, and
- 1:42:21Speaker 3: also that like he I don't know, there's there's he's
- 1:42:24Speaker 3: just like a pile of tropes and I don't know
- 1:42:26Speaker 3: what to make of him, and the performance is so campy,
- 1:42:29Speaker 3: Like I agree that, like, yeah, the the class tropes
- 1:42:31Speaker 3: are very present, as are that. Like again, it's just
- 1:42:36Speaker 3: adding something that just feels like unnecessarily complicated for the
- 1:42:39Speaker 3: kind of movie. This is making him an alcoholic as well,
- 1:42:44Speaker 3: and like just throwing that in there. I you know,
- 1:42:49Speaker 3: I don't know what to make of him. I do
- 1:42:51Speaker 3: agree that it's like the fact that it's I guess
- 1:42:54Speaker 3: I am like glad that he isn't being given like
- 1:42:58Speaker 3: a working class job to imply that he's a bad person.
- 1:43:03Speaker 3: And we also do have I mean, in Arthur's character,
- 1:43:06Speaker 3: we have another working class character who's subject to many
- 1:43:11Speaker 3: other tropes. I don't know. Yeah, it's like so campy,
- 1:43:15Speaker 3: it over the top that I don't really know what
- 1:43:18Speaker 3: to make of it.
- 1:43:18Speaker 4: How did he get into clowning? Did he used to
- 1:43:21Speaker 4: have a passion for it but he lost it?
- 1:43:24Speaker 5: I mean, he's into clowning enough that he has a
- 1:43:26Speaker 5: custom truck that has a giant, professionally made clown head
- 1:43:29Speaker 5: on the top.
- 1:43:30Speaker 3: So well, yeah, he's invested.
- 1:43:32Speaker 2: He had one, well until he drove it into that length.
- 1:43:36Speaker 3: Was it the family business?
- 1:43:38Speaker 5: Like, yeah, maybe it's speaking of fathers. Maybe his father
- 1:43:41Speaker 5: was moved the whole family to Spokane to force him
- 1:43:43Speaker 5: to go to clown college. Oh, something to think about.
- 1:43:46Speaker 2: Yeah, we don't know. It's just yeah, just one trope
- 1:43:50Speaker 2: on top of the next. And it's all very cartoonish.
- 1:43:53Speaker 2: And again like a character who's struggling with addiction. The
- 1:43:59Speaker 2: movie so so like, and that's also why he's a
- 1:44:02Speaker 2: bad person. And I know that this is a complicated
- 1:44:04Speaker 2: matter where people who are dealing with addiction do behave
- 1:44:09Speaker 2: sometimes in ways that is harmful to themselves and others,
- 1:44:13Speaker 2: But movies like this never approach it with any nuance. Yeah,
- 1:44:16Speaker 2: and it's just like, well, he's an alcoholic and he's poor,
- 1:44:19Speaker 2: therefore bad.
- 1:44:20Speaker 3: Yeah, therefore villain.
- 1:44:21Speaker 4: Also, I'm sorry I said that Arthur might have a
- 1:44:24Speaker 4: gambling problem. I was just trying to I thought that
- 1:44:26Speaker 4: was in the movie. Are you just made that up?
- 1:44:28Speaker 4: I've made that up. I was trying to hypothesize how
- 1:44:32Speaker 4: you lose all of your NBA money, And I.
- 1:44:35Speaker 2: Mean that's what Michael Jordan dealt with in real life, right,
- 1:44:39Speaker 2: so maybe I mean exactly.
- 1:44:41Speaker 5: He says that it's not a gambling problem if you
- 1:44:44Speaker 5: don't run out of money, and he has never run
- 1:44:46Speaker 5: out of money, therefore he doesn't have a problem.
- 1:44:48Speaker 3: That's what he says.
- 1:44:49Speaker 4: And I'm paraphrasing, but that's basically what he said.
- 1:44:52Speaker 3: Addiction is an otherfucker.
- 1:44:54Speaker 5: It's wild out there, folks.
- 1:44:56Speaker 3: Yeah, it's like and I would be so shocked if
- 1:44:59Speaker 3: the writers of this movie were even remotely doing anything
- 1:45:03Speaker 3: but just like pulling well worn tropes out of their
- 1:45:07Speaker 3: ass in that way.
- 1:45:09Speaker 4: But I'd like to say that Arthur could have been
- 1:45:11Speaker 4: swindled by an unscrupulous agent. True, there are many things,
- 1:45:15Speaker 4: many things could have happened to Arthur.
- 1:45:17Speaker 5: I mean, I can't imagine it was a picnic to
- 1:45:19Speaker 5: be a black player and the NBA in nineteen fifty six.
- 1:45:23Speaker 3: Absolutely yeah.
- 1:45:24Speaker 5: And also like shoe deals, endorsement deals, that stuff where
- 1:45:27Speaker 5: athletes actually make most of their money, Like none of
- 1:45:30Speaker 5: that stuff interested until like the seventies and eighties. So
- 1:45:32Speaker 5: that's right, poor Arthur and then but also that he
- 1:45:35Speaker 5: felt like he had to hide his accomplishments from people
- 1:45:38Speaker 5: just it just makes you sad. And then he kind
- 1:45:40Speaker 5: of applies his great wealth of knowledge to help some
- 1:45:45Speaker 5: random I mean, I don't know. Yeah, obviously Josh is
- 1:45:48Speaker 5: going through a lot too, But it's like Arthur heal thyself, sir, you.
- 1:45:52Speaker 3: Know it really is. Yeah, like Arthur could be there's
- 1:45:55Speaker 3: a whole separate, very overly serious family drama about Arthur
- 1:46:00Speaker 3: her but it's just sort of left on the table
- 1:46:03Speaker 3: there not so much about norm I don't know. I
- 1:46:07Speaker 3: don't know if there's if there's enough runway for a
- 1:46:09Speaker 3: full movie there maybe though I don't know, there's maybe
- 1:46:11Speaker 3: a bobcat gold White movie in there.
- 1:46:13Speaker 4: I don't Yeah, absolutely, yeah.
- 1:46:16Speaker 2: I mean, isn't that kind of what Baskets is about?
- 1:46:18Speaker 3: There you go, there you go, Yeah, there's it's like
- 1:46:22Speaker 3: it's frustrating, but it's like I love, I love being
- 1:46:24Speaker 3: shown a trophy character when they're when they're doing something
- 1:46:27Speaker 3: with it. But that's not the kind of movie where
- 1:46:29Speaker 3: we're really watching. No, except with regards to Golden Retrievers,
- 1:46:32Speaker 3: in which case we.
- 1:46:33Speaker 5: Got a real nuanced look at what dogs are capable of.
- 1:46:35Speaker 5: I think so true in this film.
- 1:46:38Speaker 3: It's true.
- 1:46:39Speaker 2: Another another trophy character I felt was the judge. At
- 1:46:43Speaker 2: the end, it felt like a lot of ageist tropes
- 1:46:46Speaker 2: were happening there where, Like, yes, he can't see, he
- 1:46:50Speaker 2: can't hear, he doesn't seem to understand what's going on
- 1:46:53Speaker 2: around him. He's horrible at his job.
- 1:46:55Speaker 5: However, speaking of having controversial takes about judges, specifically, if
- 1:47:00Speaker 5: you have been appointed for life to a judge ship
- 1:47:05Speaker 5: and you don't know where you are or what's going on,
- 1:47:07Speaker 5: please retire, and please retire when Barack Obama is president.
- 1:47:12Speaker 3: A judge of any stature at any time, Yes.
- 1:47:15Speaker 5: If you could just go ahead and not wait until
- 1:47:18Speaker 5: Donald Trump is president to retire, slash Die, that would
- 1:47:21Speaker 5: help us all out a great deal.
- 1:47:23Speaker 4: Thank you, just throwing that.
- 1:47:25Speaker 5: It does not about age, it's about ability.
- 1:47:27Speaker 3: We'll just put it that way, the ability to judge.
- 1:47:30Speaker 5: Just throwing that out there, this judge.
- 1:47:32Speaker 3: It's so funny because it's like you don't even need
- 1:47:34Speaker 3: those tropes because the character.
- 1:47:36Speaker 2: Like the situation is goofy enough, and I just love
- 1:47:39Speaker 2: that the.
- 1:47:40Speaker 3: Characters like I don't give a fuck, I'm gonna do
- 1:47:42Speaker 3: it feel as good, Like that's that's fun enough on
- 1:47:45Speaker 3: its own, like him just being like whatever today is,
- 1:47:48Speaker 3: I'm today doesn't count. Today's a silly one, Like that's
- 1:47:52Speaker 3: fun today.
- 1:47:53Speaker 5: We're making a TikTok on the front lawn of the.
- 1:48:00Speaker 2: We talked a little bit about the sequels, But the
- 1:48:01Speaker 2: thing I was curious about them is that because I
- 1:48:04Speaker 2: knew nothing about I don't know if it was the
- 1:48:06Speaker 2: same cast, even the same dog. You know, I knew nothing,
- 1:48:10Speaker 2: and I was curious about is it ever girls playing sports? Yes,
- 1:48:15Speaker 2: And the answer is kind of so. Air Bud Golden Receiver,
- 1:48:20Speaker 2: the sequel that immediately follows this one, is about American
- 1:48:23Speaker 2: football and it seems to be all boys. Air Bud
- 1:48:27Speaker 2: World Pup is the soccer slash real football movie where
- 1:48:32Speaker 2: it is a co ed team, but it does seem
- 1:48:34Speaker 2: to be mostly boys. There is I think at least
- 1:48:37Speaker 2: one girl on the team. Maybe she is the only one.
- 1:48:39Speaker 2: I didn't watch the movie, hard to say.
- 1:48:41Speaker 3: And then when the focus comes to Andrea, then we.
- 1:48:45Speaker 2: Got to say. In the next one, Seventh Inning Fetch,
- 1:48:48Speaker 2: which is the baseball movie, again seems to be a
- 1:48:52Speaker 2: co ed team. But I was scrubbing through the movie
- 1:48:56Speaker 2: on Disney Plus and it is seems to be mostly
- 1:48:59Speaker 2: boys again, and then then the next one is Airbud
- 1:49:05Speaker 2: Spikes Back. The Volleyball movie also a co ed team,
- 1:49:10Speaker 2: although it almost doesn't seem like an official like like
- 1:49:13Speaker 2: a school sports team. I think they're just sort of
- 1:49:15Speaker 2: like casually playing beach volleyball, and Airbud gets involved. I
- 1:49:20Speaker 2: can't really tell. But this one also centers Andrea, Josh's sister,
- 1:49:24Speaker 2: so girls do get more meaningfully involved in the franchise
- 1:49:29Speaker 2: as it goes.
- 1:49:30Speaker 3: On the Hairbud universe, but it is.
- 1:49:32Speaker 2: Still mostly centering boys playing sports and dogs playing sports.
- 1:49:37Speaker 4: Is the dog ever a girl?
- 1:49:39Speaker 3: So no, Airbud gets a girl friend and they literally
- 1:49:44Speaker 3: missus Airbud hert. As far as I know, missus Arabud
- 1:49:47Speaker 3: does not play sports. She's a stay at home missus Airbud.
- 1:49:51Speaker 3: I'm not totally sure. I do know that in the
- 1:49:53Speaker 3: third or fourth one he gets a girl friend, and then.
- 1:49:57Speaker 2: I think that's world puffs pro pup okay, believe you.
- 1:50:01Speaker 3: And then he I don't like how they talk about
- 1:50:04Speaker 3: dogs having babies. He sires puppies sires, that's nasty. But
- 1:50:09Speaker 3: he does he does have puppies who become the stars
- 1:50:12Speaker 3: of air Buddies.
- 1:50:14Speaker 5: I see, I see, well, the legacy of title nine
- 1:50:19Speaker 5: is in tatters in the Airbud universe.
- 1:50:21Speaker 3: It's true. It's true.
- 1:50:22Speaker 2: Title nine more like K nine?
- 1:50:25Speaker 5: What is?
- 1:50:27Speaker 3: And there it is?
- 1:50:28Speaker 2: I don't have anything else to say about the movie.
- 1:50:32Speaker 5: I just want to say that this was a gift.
- 1:50:34Speaker 5: I know we have a lot of fraught feelings about
- 1:50:37Speaker 5: the ethics of Airbud, but boy, I haven't laughed like
- 1:50:40Speaker 5: that in months. I think Airbud cured my very severe depression.
- 1:50:47Speaker 5: Glad to him, I say, I salute to Airbud and
- 1:50:51Speaker 5: his progeny.
- 1:50:52Speaker 4: I salute you.
- 1:50:53Speaker 5: Oh so a very funny movie. I laughed a lot.
- 1:50:56Speaker 2: Does anyone have anything else they want to talk about?
- 1:50:58Speaker 4: Well? Are we going to talk about the Bechdel Test?
- 1:51:01Speaker 4: Because I have something to say about that.
- 1:51:04Speaker 5: Did anyone? Did anyone pass?
- 1:51:06Speaker 3: Honestly, I wasn't really paying attention.
- 1:51:07Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 1:51:08Speaker 4: I don't know if this counts, but because I actually
- 1:51:11Speaker 4: didn't clock the the mom on the phone, so I
- 1:51:13Speaker 4: guess it could have been.
- 1:51:14Speaker 5: I don't think that counts because she wasn't.
- 1:51:16Speaker 2: We don't see we don't hear the grandmother speaking.
- 1:51:18Speaker 4: Okay, so to me, the only one I noticed is
- 1:51:24Speaker 4: when they first get to the new house and the
- 1:51:27Speaker 4: mom says to both kids, so what do you think?
- 1:51:30Speaker 4: What do you think?
- 1:51:32Speaker 5: So?
- 1:51:32Speaker 4: What do you what do you think of the house?
- 1:51:33Speaker 3: Does that count?
- 1:51:35Speaker 2: Does little baby Andrea respond?
- 1:51:38Speaker 4: She kind of goes, ah, I think it counts. I can't.
- 1:51:44Speaker 5: I can't.
- 1:51:44Speaker 3: I don't think. Usually then we'll kick it to like
- 1:51:47Speaker 3: does it spiritually pass? And I just feel like, no,
- 1:51:50Speaker 3: way doesn't spiritually pass.
- 1:51:52Speaker 4: Like there's a part when the mom talks to the principal,
- 1:51:54Speaker 4: except they're talking about Josh and his dad and his
- 1:51:58Speaker 4: dad Yeah.
- 1:52:01Speaker 3: Exploded father.
- 1:52:02Speaker 2: So yeah, I think that's a no on the Bechdel test.
- 1:52:05Speaker 4: But I kind of I'm standing by mind where the
- 1:52:08Speaker 4: mom asks the baby if she likes the apartment?
- 1:52:12Speaker 2: Okay, fair for fair.
- 1:52:13Speaker 4: I think that was pretty good.
- 1:52:14Speaker 3: I just wanted to throw in here really quick, because
- 1:52:16Speaker 3: we sometimes, I don't know, sometimes enemy sometimes. Friend of
- 1:52:20Speaker 3: the show Roger Ebert gave this movie three stars, which.
- 1:52:23Speaker 5: I just thought was very out of three out of
- 1:52:26Speaker 5: four out of.
- 1:52:27Speaker 3: Four, pretty high spore and his whole I do like
- 1:52:33Speaker 3: his reviews that are like this. He's like, look, I
- 1:52:36Speaker 3: went in expected to have a bad time, and I
- 1:52:38Speaker 3: was moved yep, and so and so I have no
- 1:52:40Speaker 3: choice but to give it three stars. I was like,
- 1:52:42Speaker 3: good for you, Good for you for recognizing.
- 1:52:44Speaker 4: That's how I feel. I agree he's right on.
- 1:52:47Speaker 5: My only disagreement is that I would give it four.
- 1:52:50Speaker 2: Well, speaking of giving the movie a number of things
- 1:52:54Speaker 2: on a scale, so it's our nipple scale. We rate
- 1:52:57Speaker 2: the movie zero to five nipples based on examining the
- 1:53:02Speaker 2: movie through an intersectional feminist lens. And while this is
- 1:53:06Speaker 2: a romp and while this has some great dog acting
- 1:53:10Speaker 2: and basketball abilities, I would say on the nipple scale
- 1:53:15Speaker 2: it gets one nipple because there a mom is there.
- 1:53:22Speaker 2: But based on all the things we've talked about regarding
- 1:53:25Speaker 2: tropes surrounding poor characters and black characters and everything that
- 1:53:32Speaker 2: we've discussed, Yeah, I think only one nipple, and I
- 1:53:36Speaker 2: will give it to Buddy the Dog.
- 1:53:38Speaker 4: Yeah, I think I would give it. I would give
- 1:53:41Speaker 4: it two, although I'm not super familiar with the scale,
- 1:53:44Speaker 4: so I could be off. But I just feel like
- 1:53:46Speaker 4: thinking about the era and like the time that we
- 1:53:50Speaker 4: grew up in, and like there's so much media that
- 1:53:53Speaker 4: is that doesn't just use tropes but is like overtly
- 1:53:57Speaker 4: offensive truth and like degrading and derogatory and what. It
- 1:54:01Speaker 4: doesn't have any of that. It's just sort of like
- 1:54:04Speaker 4: ideologically insensitive and clumsy.
- 1:54:07Speaker 5: I think, I guess maybe the Bars on the Ground
- 1:54:10Speaker 5: for media that came out in the nineties. But it's
- 1:54:14Speaker 5: like a lot of stuff you can't go back and
- 1:54:16Speaker 5: watch because there's like the use of slurs and just
- 1:54:20Speaker 5: like wild comments about people's weight or whatever, like really
- 1:54:25Speaker 5: out of pocket jokes that are just like completely racially
- 1:54:30Speaker 5: based or just outright racist or whatever. And so like
- 1:54:33Speaker 5: a lot of the issues that I if you even
- 1:54:35Speaker 5: want to call them issues, I cannot emphasize enough.
- 1:54:37Speaker 4: I love this movie so much.
- 1:54:38Speaker 2: I really loved it.
- 1:54:40Speaker 5: It's like stuff that you learn about later, like when
- 1:54:43Speaker 5: you go to college, and then when you rewatch something,
- 1:54:45Speaker 5: you're like, oh, that's that trope I learned about in
- 1:54:47Speaker 5: my film studies class, which I took, by the way,
- 1:54:51Speaker 5: you know, So like, yeah, is there this like sort
- 1:54:54Speaker 5: of ridiculous and often harmful magical negro trope?
- 1:55:00Speaker 4: Yes?
- 1:55:00Speaker 5: Is it the worst one I've ever seen?
- 1:55:02Speaker 2: Not by far?
- 1:55:03Speaker 5: You know what I mean? So it's like I'm on
- 1:55:06Speaker 5: a human scale, I'm given it four stars. On the
- 1:55:10Speaker 5: feminist intersectional scale, I will also I will give it
- 1:55:14Speaker 5: too as well, because to Lindy's point, there was nothing
- 1:55:18Speaker 5: happening in it where that was like active pointed, like
- 1:55:23Speaker 5: stuff where you couldn't show it to a kid today,
- 1:55:26Speaker 5: which a lot of stuff from that era fits into
- 1:55:29Speaker 5: that category, like you can't show it to a child
- 1:55:32Speaker 5: because they're.
- 1:55:32Speaker 3: Like, oh god, you watched this.
- 1:55:35Speaker 2: Yeah totally.
- 1:55:36Speaker 5: There's nothing really like that that happens in air. But
- 1:55:38Speaker 5: it's just sort of like an absentee mother.
- 1:55:41Speaker 2: Really, I'm just too busy at the napkin factory.
- 1:55:43Speaker 4: Yeah yeah, And like I really and.
- 1:55:45Speaker 5: They could have done a much better job giving coach
- 1:55:49Speaker 5: Arthur Cheney a full, nuanced and inner rich life and
- 1:55:53Speaker 5: they don't do that, which is too bad.
- 1:55:55Speaker 4: I thought maybe the mom and Arthur were gonna get together.
- 1:55:58Speaker 5: Hello.
- 1:55:58Speaker 4: That was one of the things.
- 1:55:59Speaker 3: I just get it, like it's giving the movie credit
- 1:56:01Speaker 3: for what it doesn't do versus what it does. But
- 1:56:03Speaker 3: I was surprised that they did toss in a boyfriend
- 1:56:06Speaker 3: I guess would be pretty insensitive due to her husband
- 1:56:08Speaker 3: just exploded. But a lot a lot of movies would,
- 1:56:12Speaker 3: A lot of movies would, and that eventually does have.
- 1:56:14Speaker 3: That happens literally in the next movie is she meets
- 1:56:18Speaker 3: a new guy right away and she's like, I'm over it.
- 1:56:21Speaker 3: I'm over it, Enter Patrick, I'm gonna be a coward
- 1:56:24Speaker 3: and split the difference at one and a half. Okay,
- 1:56:28Speaker 3: and that's going to be my choice. I want to
- 1:56:31Speaker 3: say one more thing that I think that the true
- 1:56:34Speaker 3: villains of this franchise, if we're talking about people that
- 1:56:37Speaker 3: are like profiting off of animal performers with animal standards,
- 1:56:43Speaker 3: to get worse and worse as time goes on. Two
- 1:56:47Speaker 3: brothers produced this movie, which I always find to be
- 1:56:51Speaker 3: a little bit evil show business brothers. I just don't
- 1:56:53Speaker 3: like it. The Vince brothers, Robert Vince and William Vince.
- 1:56:58Speaker 3: They have William Vince has produced like real movies quote
- 1:57:04Speaker 3: unquote no offense, but like uh like he produced movies
- 1:57:07Speaker 3: we've covered on the show. He produced Saved, he produced Capoti,
- 1:57:12Speaker 3: whereas Robert Vince especially seems to have made a fortune
- 1:57:19Speaker 3: exploiting animals for movies. He produced MVP Most Valuable Primate,
- 1:57:24Speaker 3: He did all the air buds, including the one where
- 1:57:27Speaker 3: five puppies died and more recently has been doing stuff
- 1:57:31Speaker 3: called like monkey up pop Star. Like It's like, this
- 1:57:34Speaker 3: is someone who probably like owns a house in Beverly
- 1:57:37Speaker 3: Hills based on exploiting animals.
- 1:57:39Speaker 5: So I know he hated to watch Chimp Crazy, that documentary.
- 1:57:45Speaker 4: Ringing.
- 1:57:48Speaker 3: So that's the last. Yeah, I just would saying those
- 1:57:52Speaker 3: guys freak me out. Also, just in general, brothers freaked
- 1:57:55Speaker 3: me out.
- 1:57:55Speaker 4: Conceptually, I think boo to brothers.
- 1:57:58Speaker 5: Yeah, I give z Rowe nipples to brothers.
- 1:58:02Speaker 3: I don't like movies about brothers. I don't like I
- 1:58:04Speaker 3: don't know my fiance has a brother. I'm like, don't
- 1:58:07Speaker 3: hang out with them. Like, yeah, it's a scary bond
- 1:58:10Speaker 3: break up. Some human bonds should not be preserved totally.
- 1:58:15Speaker 2: Yeah. Oh well, thanks, thank you to the both of
- 1:58:19Speaker 2: you for being here. What would you like to plug?

- 1:59:43Speaker 3: You carefully chose your worst there.
- 1:59:46Speaker 5: He came from hell and I love him so much,
- 1:59:50Speaker 5: but he does not believe in quiet time for podcast recording.
- 1:59:54Speaker 4: He does not believe in that.
- 1:59:56Speaker 2: And that's his prerogative.
