- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Good morning.
- 0:01SPEAKER_00: This is Brenda, and today we're going to be reviewing Stephen King's Children of the Corn from 1984.
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: This was written as a short story, originally published in Penthouse in 1977, and then went on to be in one of his collections, Night Shift of 1978.
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: It stars Linda Hamilton, who we all know as Sarah Connor from The Terminator, and she was also in the show Beauty and the Beast and played Dr.
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: K more recently in Stranger Things.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: Peter Horton plays her husband and is also known for 30-something, brothers and sisters, and fade to black.
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: Then we come to Malachi and Isaac, what a couple of religious nuts.
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: John Franklin plays Isaac, and he also played Cousin It in 1991's The Addams Family.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: Courtney Gaines plays Malachi, and he actually grew up to be a nice looking guy, but I also knew him from The Burbs with Tom Hanks.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: Also Hellblazers, The Funhouse Massacre, and The Wrath of Becky.
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: This movie is primarily set in the fictional town of Gatlin, Nebraska, but was filmed in Iowa.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: The movie starts off with Job speaking to the audience.
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: He says, It was about three years ago.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: I was the only kid in church that day.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: The others were with Isaac out in the cornfield.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: I didn't get to go because dad didn't like Isaac.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: He was pretty smart, my dad.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: After church, we went to Hanson's just like always.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: Sarah was homesick with mom.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: She'd come down with the fever real sudden.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: So when Job and his dad get to Hanson's, his dad wants to call home, so he goes to the payphone.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: Job goes to the counter to order a shake.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: Malachi is at the pinball machine and Isaac is seen through the front window and he gives a nod.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: Some of the patrons are being poisoned by coffee, and then the teenagers start killing all the adults in the diner.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: Poor Job has to watch his dad get killed, and of course his dad drops the phone and then mom's screaming.
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: So we know all the killing isn't just happening in the diner.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: All the adults in town are getting killed.
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: Sarah and Job, and then another little boy, Joseph, are wanting to run away.
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: We meet Vicky and Bert who wake up in a hotel.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: It's Bert's birthday, and they're on their way to Seattle.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: This becomes a wrong place, wrong time situation.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: Joseph leaves Job and Sarah behind, saying that he'll send help, that they would only slow him down, so he takes off to the cornfields and Malachi's onto him and starts chasing him.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: He catches up and cuts his throat so he starts bleeding out, but he's able to run out into the road.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: And here come Vicky and Bert and hit him, so they stop and Bert finds his suitcase and sees that there's blood already on it.
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: Sarah and Job have kind of been left alone by Isaac because they weren't out in the field when the entity known as he who walks behind the rows made himself known.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: They would sneak back into their own house to do things that they were told they weren't supposed to do, like play games and play dress up and listen to records and draw.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: The pictures that Sarah draws, Isaac calls the gift of sight.
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: There's an old man right outside of town at a gas station that they've allowed to live, saying that he provided fuel or oil, gas or something that they needed.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: He has a dog named Sarge.
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: As long as he keeps his mouth shut and reroutes people, they let him live.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: Vicky and Bert show up at the gas station wanting to use the phone.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: He's telling them that they don't have a phone, they don't have gas, and to go to Hemingford and to stay out of Gatlin, that they have religion there and they don't take kindly to strangers.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: So after they leave, Malachi shows up and he ends up killing him and his dog.
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: Oh, don't like that.
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: And you know how some people are nosy, I would be.
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: So they've opened up the suitcase now that they picked up off the road, and in it are just clothes, matches, a compass, a pocket knife, and a cross made out of corns.
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: Vicki and Bert are following the signs, but they keep getting turned around, so they end up going to Gatlin.
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: No surprise there.
- 3:20SPEAKER_00: Isaac is preaching to the kids out in the cornfield, talking about the outlanders.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: A man and a woman are coming, and also he talks of the blue man.
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: And when you see the skeleton that's up on the cross, it still has a policeman's uniform on.
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: Bert and Vicki start making their way through town, and every place they stop, there's nobody there, even though they're kind of being watched, but they see corn everywhere.
- 3:39SPEAKER_00: They end up going to a house to use the phone, and they go in and they find Sarah.
- 3:43SPEAKER_00: Bert leaves Sarah with Vicky to go to town hall.
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: He's still looking for grown-ups, and Sarah has told them that Isaac put all the grown-ups in the cornfield.
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: When Bert finally comes back for Vicky, his car is full of corn.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: Malachi and a bunch of the teens have come in and kidnap Vicky.
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: And Sarah shows Bert with her drawing what happened to her.
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: The kids are out there yelling, kill, kill, kill, and they have Vicki tied up on a cross, right across from the blue man.
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: Bert ends up going in a church, finds a bunch of the kids there.
- 4:09SPEAKER_00: Amos is on the first night of his 19th year, meaning he's going to be sacrificed.
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: So they're getting blood out of him so they can all drink it.
- 4:17SPEAKER_00: The kids start chasing Bert out of there, and Job hides Bert.
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: Malachi is power hungry, so by now he's turning on Isaac and telling everybody to get Vicky off of that cross and put Isaac up in his spot.
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: Vicki's still tied up and he starts walking her through the streets, yelling outlander, because he's trying to draw out Bert.
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: Bert, Job, and Sarah go up to the loft of a barn so they can see the clearing.
- 4:39SPEAKER_00: In the clearing, Amos is trying to sacrifice himself.
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: Isaac's up on the cross and he's screaming, I did everything you wanted.
- 4:45SPEAKER_00: And this light is creeping up to the bottom of the cross, and before you know it, it blows it right out of the ground.
- 4:50SPEAKER_00: Bert knocks over Malachi and tells Vicky to go on.
- 4:53SPEAKER_00: Bert and Malachi are fighting, and then all of a sudden here comes Isaac saying, He wants you to, Malachi.
- 4:58SPEAKER_00: Everybody left is now hiding in a barn.
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: The blue man was going to burn the field, and Job gives Bert a Bible passage that talks about the lake of fire.
- 5:07SPEAKER_00: They use the sprinkler system to distribute gasoline all through the cornfield and ignite it and catch it on fire.
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: Bert, Vicky, Sarah, and Job decide that they're gonna start walking the 19 miles to Hemingford, but when they go back to the car, Bert goes in to get a map and a girl pops up in the back, but they're able to knock her out.
- 5:23SPEAKER_00: So let's see how many wine glasses this movie earned.
- 5:25SPEAKER_00: Eerie?
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: Not really.
- 5:27SPEAKER_00: The environment?
- 5:28SPEAKER_00: Not really.
- 5:28SPEAKER_00: It's daylight the majority of the time.
- 5:30SPEAKER_00: Cornfields, nah.
- 5:31SPEAKER_00: Evil?
- 5:32SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 5:32SPEAKER_00: Malachi and Isaac are nuts, and those are names that are used in my circle constantly for people who are too religious.
- 5:40SPEAKER_00: So two wine glasses, Malachi and Isaac, each get one.
- 5:43SPEAKER_00: Empathy, you know that's getting a wine glass.
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: That poor dog.
- 5:46SPEAKER_00: His poor bloody bandana.
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: Poor Sarge.
- 5:49SPEAKER_00: May he rest in peace.
- 5:50SPEAKER_00: Entertaining, yes, it's one that I will watch again in the future.
- 5:54SPEAKER_00: So we have a total of four wine glasses.
- 5:56SPEAKER_00: My next movie is gonna be Poltergeist from 1982, so until then.
