Transcript
- 0:14SPEAKER_02: Welcome back.
- 0:16SPEAKER_02: I am one of your hosts today, Coach Ken Kenniss.
- 0:18SPEAKER_02: If you don't know much about my story, I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 25 in 2007.
- 0:26SPEAKER_02: And I'm the founder of Simplifying Life with Diabetes, a diabetes health coaching company that bridges the gap between your medical team and the daily complexities that you face every single day living with this condition between your doctor's appointments.
- 0:38SPEAKER_02: I truly believe that every single one of us living or caring for someone with type 1 diabetes only has one job.
- 0:44SPEAKER_02: And that's to figure out what's going to work for you.
- 0:47SPEAKER_02: If you're looking for new perspectives and new ideas on how to live with diabetes, you've come to the right place.
- 0:53SPEAKER_02: As always, before we get started, please remember that nothing that you hear on this podcast should be considered medical advice or otherwise.
- 0:58SPEAKER_02: Please always consult your medical team before making any changes to your diabetes management.
- 1:05SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 1:06SPEAKER_02: Got Graham.
- 1:07SPEAKER_02: As always, two days a week.
- 1:08SPEAKER_02: Graham's on with us.
- 1:10SPEAKER_02: Graham, I'm gonna start this off quick.
- 1:12SPEAKER_02: I know we're both on a time crutch today, so today I wanted to talk about this this little concept that a lot of people I feel like have issues with, and it's the rage bull, the like the rage bullish trap.
- 1:29SPEAKER_02: What's your thoughts about like rage bolassing?
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: Oh well, I guess I always ask I'll start with a question.
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: What is the definition?
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: What would we consider the definition?
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: Well, that would I would I would before you speak, I would say taking more of your bolus before it's really run out of your system.
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: Is that rage is that what you would define as rage bolassing?
- 1:59SPEAKER_02: That's not what I define as rage bolusing.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: So give so let me go back.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: Hold on, hold on.
- 2:04SPEAKER_02: That would be like kind of kind of like stacking.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: Okay, that's how I okay, that's how I equate to it.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: Okay, go ahead.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: So So maybe I don't know.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: Maybe I'm not as familiar then.
- 2:13SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 2:14SPEAKER_02: So this is this is what I kind of define as rage bolusing.
- 2:18SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 2:19SPEAKER_02: You got sticky blood sugars for whatever reason.
- 2:21SPEAKER_02: You're insulin resistant.
- 2:23SPEAKER_02: You you you we've all dealt with it.
- 2:25SPEAKER_02: Blood sugars that are just hanging up there in the 200s or high according to your standards, and you're just you're just like pissed off about it, and you're you just keep dosing front dumping insulin into your body.
- 2:42SPEAKER_02: Dumping insulin, dumping insulin, dumping insulin.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: Insulin dump.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: Got it.
- 2:46SPEAKER_02: Insulin dump.
- 2:47SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 2:48SPEAKER_02: Or you are, you know, maybe this is after you have eaten.
- 2:53SPEAKER_02: Maybe you miscalculated on a on your bolus, or you think, or maybe you didn't.
- 2:57SPEAKER_02: Maybe you well, the only way this would work is if you miscalculate on your bolus and you give yourself enough enough insulin.
- 3:02SPEAKER_02: And you can st it you feel like you gave yourself enough insulin.
- 3:06SPEAKER_02: You did the calculations, the carb count, and all the stuff, and you did everything you're supposed to, but this thing continues to still go up.
- 3:14SPEAKER_02: And you just are continuing to put insulin on and insulin on and insulin from the anger perspective.
- 3:20SPEAKER_02: I feel like rage bolassing is from it's coming from a a frustration place.
- 3:26SPEAKER_02: I'm frustrated because this is not working for whatever reason.
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: I do that if I feel like if I have the if I have the food to back it up.
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: I don't think I've ever I mean, it's hard to say, man.
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: Like I feel like there's times where I'd almost prefer to be running high, like when I'm sick or you know, when I'm trying to like I talk about this all the time.
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: You know, I'd rather be at 180 or 170.
- 3:54SPEAKER_02: And I think so crazy to me, yeah.
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: Wrong.
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: But this is where I'm getting this is my point.
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: I think that's kind of where people get a little bit hung up on this, is that I think people are kind of like you, they're obsessed with being able to get it down.
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: So like with a rage bolus, do do lows come, or with a rage bolus, do you think you're like you're stuck high?
- 4:14SPEAKER_02: Well, what it the outcome when you're rage bulls, when you personally are rage bolusing.
- 4:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 4:21SPEAKER_02: So rage again, again, remember, rage bolusing is the the person's being is in frustration.
- 4:28SPEAKER_02: They're in frustration mode because they're the insulin that they're giving themselves isn't working.
- 4:34SPEAKER_02: It's not coming down, right?
- 4:36SPEAKER_02: That's that that's that's what rage bolusing is.
- 4:38SPEAKER_02: Like I'm so pissed off, I've just given myself four units, it's been 45 minutes, it's still not coming down, it's still rising a little bit, what the hell is going on?
- 4:48SPEAKER_02: And I'm putting more insulin on top of more insulin on top of more insulin.
- 4:51SPEAKER_02: Now, the outcome of this, hypothetically, if you're not good at understanding the signs and you're not good at, you know, look coming back and constantly looking at the CGM, the outcome of that 100% could be low blood sugar.
- 5:05SPEAKER_00: Dude, I think this comes down to you have you have five best friends and you've never been to any of their houses, and all of a sudden you go to all their houses and you see some someone that I talk to every day lives their life completely different from me, completely unbeknownst to me.
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: You know, you just said wait 45 minutes.
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: You know, I've never heard wait 45 minutes.
- 5:26SPEAKER_02: No, I just threw that number.
- 5:27SPEAKER_02: That was a number that I threw out.
- 5:29SPEAKER_02: Like as an example, like you're you're looking, you're taking insulin, you've put insulin on top of insulin.
- 5:35SPEAKER_02: My point.
- 5:35SPEAKER_02: And you've you've hypothetically waited for it could be 20 minutes, it could be 30 minutes, it could be two hours, it could be 45.
- 5:43SPEAKER_02: You've waited some time that you know the insulin should be working by now and it's not doing anything.
- 5:49SPEAKER_02: That's what I'm saying.
- 5:50SPEAKER_02: The 45 minutes was just an example.
- 5:52SPEAKER_00: I just think this all goes back to what I've separated from is the trying to be rage ballest seems like an overreaction, you know.
- 5:59SPEAKER_02: You're it is an overreaction.
- 6:01SPEAKER_02: It's 100% an overreaction.
- 6:03SPEAKER_00: And I wonder if, you know, if I wonder if the CGM kind of plays a part of that where you're just you're why tick by tick by tick by tick by tick, and you have to like you have to separate from that, man.
- 6:15SPEAKER_00: You know, you have to you have to separate from that.
- 6:18SPEAKER_00: Separate from what though?
- 6:20SPEAKER_00: What you're kind of talking about.
- 6:22SPEAKER_00: I think this is a good conversation because I don't really I'm not really like I'm coming from I'm coming from the not really have experienced this camp, to be honest with you.
- 6:34SPEAKER_02: I I would say that rage bolassine comes for most people, it comes into play with people who are not in alignment mentally with diabetes and how they're managing it for the most part.
- 6:48SPEAKER_02: There are definitely times when you're when it could play into, you know, it's it's not coming down, so I'm gonna continue to put insulin on board.
- 6:57SPEAKER_02: Why isn't this working?
- 6:57SPEAKER_02: Why isn't this working?
- 6:59SPEAKER_02: And I also think there's different levels of rage bolassing.
- 7:03SPEAKER_02: There's different levels of this, of the anxiety, of the of the frustration, of the panic.
- 7:09SPEAKER_02: And those levels are, I feel like those levels would be determined based off of how confident you are with yourself living with this condition and being able to manage it.
- 7:20SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 7:21SPEAKER_02: So if if I'm someone, as an example, right, if I'm someone who doesn't 100% trust my decisions for whatever reason, okay, and this happens to me, and I'm starting to rage bulls, I'm starting to put insulin on top of insulin on top of insulin because it's not moving, it's not working, I might get really frustrated, have a lot of anxiety, the panic might set in.
- 7:42SPEAKER_02: But on the flip side of someone who like myself, who feels very confident in managing diabetes, same scenario.
- 7:51SPEAKER_02: It's stuck at 200, 250, whatever it is.
- 7:54SPEAKER_02: Like it's not coming down.
- 7:55SPEAKER_02: I've put four units on to it.
- 7:57SPEAKER_02: I've waited 30, 45 minutes.
- 7:59SPEAKER_02: Okay, it's still not really coming down.
- 8:00SPEAKER_02: What the heck's going on?
- 8:02SPEAKER_02: What the heck's going on?
- 8:02SPEAKER_02: Okay, I put another two to two to four units on it.
- 8:05SPEAKER_02: All right, well, it's starting to come down a little bit, but then it came to come down to 200, and then and then it's like just sitting there at 200.
- 8:12SPEAKER_02: Like, I'm gonna put some more insulin.
- 8:14SPEAKER_02: Like, I'm not gonna be frustrated about it.
- 8:17SPEAKER_02: I'm not gonna have massive anxiety about it.
- 8:20SPEAKER_02: Or I might be frustrated about it, but I'm not gonna have massive anxiety about it.
- 8:24SPEAKER_02: Right?
- 8:24SPEAKER_02: Because I mean that that is a frustrating piece no matter what, no matter what type of psyche you have with living with this condition.
- 8:31SPEAKER_02: And I don't want to, and I don't want to sit here and say that if you are in that position and you aren't 100% in alignment with and confident in managing these decisions, that that's a bad thing, or that you're like a terrible diabetic because you're not.
- 8:47SPEAKER_02: It's just it's how you perceive and how you manage the emotions.
- 8:52SPEAKER_02: Because I feel like the emotions are everything.
- 8:54SPEAKER_02: Let's think about it on another aspect of like maybe a more biological aspect and bring in stress.
- 9:00SPEAKER_02: We know that stress raises the blood sugar.
- 9:03SPEAKER_02: We know stress increases insulin resistance.
- 9:06SPEAKER_02: So if I'm in a panic or if I'm frustrated, if I have all these crazy emotions of anger, whatever it is, as I'm trying to deal with this, what do you think our blood sugar is gonna do?
- 9:17SPEAKER_02: Our blood sugar is just gonna be harder to bring down because it's already being, you're you're throwing gasoline on the fire with the stress component.
- 9:23SPEAKER_02: So like that that's another big piece of this.
- 9:27SPEAKER_02: Now, obviously controlling that is easier said than done, but it is definitely something that we have to we have to think about when we're thinking about making these decisions or trying to trying to navigate all this stuff.
- 9:38SPEAKER_00: I do think, too, as you talk, it makes me think of the double-edged sword that's kind of happening with technology and diabetes where you are always on.
- 9:48SPEAKER_00: Like talk about people on their phone all the time, you are always on.
- 9:53SPEAKER_00: And if you have a pump and a CGM, you're not always on.
- 9:58SPEAKER_00: It's data that's coming in, it's alerts, it's alarms.
- 10:01SPEAKER_00: I think it's easier to rage bolus when it's so easy just to pick up your device and hit yourself with it, you know.
- 10:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, 100%.
- 10:08SPEAKER_00: I uh we're we got you know, so somebody controlling the delivery of insulin from a phone app.
- 10:19SPEAKER_00: Well, that's okay.
- 10:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you can do that with the pumps now.
- 10:23SPEAKER_00: That's so literally like you know, I always laugh sometimes.
- 10:26SPEAKER_00: People like, you know, I'm on my phone because I'm working, you know, and I'm I I don't I don't like seeing people on their phone, but sometimes you're like you don't really know exactly what someone's doing.
- 10:35SPEAKER_00: Like now, yeah, you know, and imagine like a young, you know, a somewhat young person, like, this is amazing.
- 10:40SPEAKER_00: You have all that technology, but it's right there, and that's that is anxiety inducing.
- 10:45SPEAKER_00: Like your friend's like, yo, come on, man, and you're like, hold on, hold on, I gotta whatever.
- 10:50SPEAKER_02: So but think about think about also like the the convenience of like the you know, the old school pumps, the Medtronic three six or the Medtronic pump, the tandem T Slim, like you just pull it out, press a button, and it gives you insulin.
- 11:04SPEAKER_02: Well, think about the convenience now of all of the pumps, pretty much now that you can literally just pull out your phone, go to your your app, and just dose right from there, right?
- 11:15SPEAKER_02: When I was on the omnipod five, I had to use the controller.
- 11:17SPEAKER_02: So I had two devices all the time.
- 11:19SPEAKER_02: And now you can use, I'm pretty sure, on the omnipod five now, like you can use your phone to dose.
- 11:25SPEAKER_02: Right?
- 11:25SPEAKER_02: So it's like everything's being done from your from your phone now.
- 11:29SPEAKER_02: So the convenience of that, but but to what you're saying with all the data coming in, I can understand that.
- 11:35SPEAKER_02: And it it it does, like I'm sure that gives someone a massive amount of anxiety, especially when something isn't going the right way.
- 11:42SPEAKER_00: So having asked you now that you're just walking around with needles, no frizz, no pump, like what do you think?
- 11:48SPEAKER_00: You like it?
- 11:49SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean, it's fine.
- 11:50SPEAKER_02: I mean, the It's a clean, it just feels clean, right?
- 11:53SPEAKER_00: It just like there's nothing attached to you.
- 11:55SPEAKER_02: It's I mean, but but I haven't had anything attached now for almost two years.
- 12:00SPEAKER_00: CGM?
- 12:01SPEAKER_02: Well, CGM, yeah, but I'll that that's just I mean, that that's just there.
- 12:06SPEAKER_02: Like it's not like I don't even I don't even realize it sometimes.
- 12:09SPEAKER_02: Like sometimes I'm literally going through my day, and this and this is what I mean when I when I'm talking on the alignment of the mental health piece of living with diabetes and the confidence on how you're living your life.
- 12:22SPEAKER_02: Not just the dosing, dosing decisions, but the confidence of how you live your life.
- 12:27SPEAKER_02: I will go, I I will go hours and hours throughout the day.
- 12:30SPEAKER_02: I'll literally go hours and be like, oh shoot, I haven't even checked my I haven't even checked my blood sugar.
- 12:35SPEAKER_02: I haven't even checked my blood sugar.
- 12:37SPEAKER_02: Or I'll go out like the other day, I was like walking around the house and I ran into a door, like I ran into the door and like felt my CGM, like, or I was at the gym, I felt my CGM, and I'm like, oh shoot, yeah.
- 12:50SPEAKER_02: I didn't even I totally forgot that that was even there.
- 12:53SPEAKER_02: I'd not thinking about this all the time.
- 12:56SPEAKER_02: Do you see my not thinking about this all the time?
- 12:58SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 12:58SPEAKER_00: I just did a hey, I just did a screen share.
- 13:02SPEAKER_00: I saw have you seen this?
- 13:04SPEAKER_00: Is like the new thing, the CGM, the CGM tattoos.
- 13:07SPEAKER_00: Have you seen this?
- 13:08SPEAKER_01: Uh-uh.
- 13:10SPEAKER_01: Look, these are all tattoos, bro.
- 13:14SPEAKER_01: This that's not a tattoo.
- 13:15SPEAKER_01: Hold on.
- 13:18SPEAKER_01: This first one is what I saw.
- 13:21SPEAKER_02: Gra Graham's showing a screenshot of all these different tattoos with different CGMs.
- 13:25SPEAKER_02: So if you're listening to this on the audio, go to Spotify, go to YouTube, and you can see what we're actually looking at.
- 13:31SPEAKER_00: But pretty much it's it's this right here.
- 13:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I get it.
- 13:35SPEAKER_02: I see what you're I see what you're saying.
- 13:38SPEAKER_00: That people are doing that's even the older one, but they so you you get a tattoo and in the middle you put your whatever.
- 13:47SPEAKER_02: Oh, in the middle you put your CGM.
- 13:50SPEAKER_00: Correct.
- 13:51SPEAKER_00: That's what I just saw one like a few days ago.
- 13:54SPEAKER_02: I wouldn't want to do that because the Dexcom G6 eventually would that like that's a that looks like a Dexcom G6 in the in this picture.
- 14:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I know.
- 14:02SPEAKER_02: And it's about to be like they're gonna get rid of it soon.
- 14:05SPEAKER_02: So then it's like you're not even gonna be able to put anything in between.
- 14:08SPEAKER_02: It like on that, if that is actually the CGM there, it looks like it's the actual tattoo.
- 14:13SPEAKER_00: No, I again I saw a girl at a water park and she had a tattoo on her and that was the the tattoo in the middle was for her Dexcom or her whatever.
- 14:23SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 14:24SPEAKER_01: Like, cool.
- 14:25SPEAKER_00: I'm just saying.
- 14:26SPEAKER_00: I gotta tattoo the screen.
- 14:28SPEAKER_00: What's the point of that?
- 14:28SPEAKER_02: Like, what is the point of that from what we were talking?
- 14:31SPEAKER_02: What is the point of that from what we were talking about?
- 14:34SPEAKER_00: We were just talking about, I don't know.
- 14:36SPEAKER_00: You were talking about how attached people are.
- 14:38SPEAKER_00: I was like, people are really attached to get tattoos at this point.
- 14:41SPEAKER_02: So well, but also but you also have to think of for me.
- 14:44SPEAKER_02: I also think like with that, I think about something when someone gets a tattoo, and unless you're an a an idiot like kid or whatever, that's just getting us like something that's a fad or something like that.
- 14:57SPEAKER_02: When you get a tattoo, it has a special meaning for you.
- 15:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 15:01SPEAKER_02: Like that has a special meaning.
- 15:02SPEAKER_02: So like for me, that's that's a positive thing if you're getting a tattoo like that.
- 15:07SPEAKER_02: If you feel then, if you feel like that you want to be wearing that or have that attached to you all the time, that's a positive thing.
- 15:14SPEAKER_02: I wouldn't think that's a negative thing.
- 15:17SPEAKER_02: Right?
- 15:17SPEAKER_02: So I think having a tattoo or doing some type of diabetes tattoo is is awesome, is incredible.
- 15:23SPEAKER_02: You know, if you if you want to ink up your skin and like that, I mean, cool.
- 15:28SPEAKER_02: That that's awesome.
- 15:29SPEAKER_00: Speaking of tattoos and things that mean a lot to people, I have a qu I have a scenario for you.
- 15:35SPEAKER_00: I want to know if you've ever had this.
- 15:37SPEAKER_00: Somebody at the gym, I told him I was type one diabetic, and he he told me I should pray on it.
- 15:46SPEAKER_02: Pray on what?
- 15:48SPEAKER_00: That it's curable if I pray if I were to pray on it.
- 15:51SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 15:52SPEAKER_02: If if you're religious and you want to pray or you have faith like cool.
- 15:57SPEAKER_00: And it was all the holistic.
- 15:58SPEAKER_00: It was the whole holistic, and did that did you know this and that?
- 16:01SPEAKER_00: Like, have you have have you had these have you had these lectures before?
- 16:05SPEAKER_00: No, no, because it's you've never had someone lecture you on diabetes where they just completely missed, like, they just are in their own brain wanting to talk, and they're like over the over over their head that you have type one or anything.
- 16:20SPEAKER_00: Nothing that's never happened to you?
- 16:21SPEAKER_02: But yeah, that's not what you're talking about.
- 16:22SPEAKER_02: You're talking about someone that sounds like that this person is religious and they believe in prayer, and they believe that if you pray, things can happen positively in your life, right?
- 16:35SPEAKER_02: So if this person's telling you, hey, just pray for a cure and it'll happen, like okay, if if that's how you live your life, if that's your belief process or belief system, like, cool.
- 16:47SPEAKER_02: Pray all day long.
- 16:48SPEAKER_02: But you praying isn't gonna make a cure get here faster.
- 16:52SPEAKER_02: Like, I mean, that's just me.
- 16:54SPEAKER_02: I'm all about faith.
- 16:55SPEAKER_02: I'm all about like prayer, I'm all about that stuff for people.
- 16:58SPEAKER_02: Like, I'm not gonna tell people not to do those things, especially if it's part of their life and it's it's what drives them and it it gives them happiness and like 100% do it.
- 17:10SPEAKER_02: But but for someone to say, Oh yeah, just pray and you know I'm shocked out of it.
- 17:15SPEAKER_02: You'll you'll bring it, you'll bring a cure into flourishing.
- 17:18SPEAKER_00: Like, I did I did the thing, I can't believe you've never done this.
- 17:21SPEAKER_00: I did the thing where I'm like, where I said, Yeah, again, I have type one diabetes, so mine is like an autoimmune disease, and like you've never like said that to someone, like kind of like caught them up to reality all the time.
- 17:37SPEAKER_00: Okay, okay.
- 17:37SPEAKER_00: This is not this is a prayer aside, he because he was talking about holistic and this and that, it's just this whole So he thought you were talking about di type two.
- 17:46SPEAKER_00: I don't know what he thought, but this whole people kind of looking at me like I'm stupid.
- 17:50SPEAKER_00: Dude, did you not try to just pray?
- 17:54SPEAKER_00: And he's like, You look healthy, you look really healthy, and this and that.
- 17:57SPEAKER_02: I'm like, again, you know, I I I don't yeah, I have no idea where this content where the conversation of this context is going.
- 18:05SPEAKER_02: What do you think what you're talking about?
- 18:07SPEAKER_02: Well, you're you're talking about two different things.
- 18:09SPEAKER_02: You're talking about prayer and faith, and someone telling you to pray for a cure, and then you and now you're bringing in a different perspective of saying like this person's getting on you for not praying, or maybe confusing because he thinks you have type 2 diabetes instead of type 1 diabetes because he doesn't know the difference.
- 18:29SPEAKER_00: Prayer, I don't want to like put somebody down, but prayer and chewing on a piece of ginger, the same holistic looking at you.
- 18:38SPEAKER_00: Why are you taking medic?
- 18:39SPEAKER_02: You don't need to be taking medicine, you just need to be because one is a one is a physical act of doing something, and the other one is a psychological at psychological thing that you're doing.
- 18:50SPEAKER_02: You're chewing ginger compared to actually praying to something, some entity, some whatever it is that brings you joy and brings brings light to your life.
- 19:02SPEAKER_02: That's why people pray.
- 19:04SPEAKER_02: People pray for forgiveness, people pray to hopefully better them their lives, pray for people pray for all kinds of different things, but it's a psychological thing that improves your the state of your being psychologically.
- 19:17SPEAKER_02: It has nothing to do with you chewing ginger and all of a sudden you're like curing something or like I don't know, like two totally different things.
- 19:25SPEAKER_00: Let me give you a better example.
- 19:27SPEAKER_00: He told me he went to the doctor, and the doctor said, like, you know, you're pre-diabetic, and he came back eight weeks later, and the doctor's like, What happened?
- 19:36SPEAKER_00: You look great.
- 19:37SPEAKER_00: He's like, I prayed.
- 19:38SPEAKER_00: He's like, and the he's like, the doctor was scratching his head, and I said, Write that down, doctor.
- 19:43SPEAKER_00: And he kept telling me, like, the doctor was scratching his head, but I told him I I prayed on it.
- 19:49SPEAKER_02: Okay, cool.
- 19:49SPEAKER_02: So he prayed on it, so that means he didn't change anything else in his life.
- 19:53SPEAKER_02: He didn't change up his eating habits, he didn't change up his exercise, he didn't get more sleep, he wasn't hydrating more, he wasn't changing up his new nutrient nutritional habits, like like maybe it's a Florida thing.
- 20:07SPEAKER_02: I feel like maybe it's a psychological thing.
- 20:09SPEAKER_00: Once a week I'm having these conversations, too.
- 20:11SPEAKER_02: But okay, so maybe it's a psycholog I'm just trying to think.
- 20:15SPEAKER_02: I'm just trying to think about the context or the or what you're saying.
- 20:21SPEAKER_02: If this person didn't change up anything else in his life, maybe the simple act of praying put his cell put his be his put him in a state of being where he was able to heal and reduce inflammatory response, so now he's not going to be type two diabetic.
- 20:40SPEAKER_02: I mean, there's so much more that's going on there, but like I could see how that could start that process of bringing because you have people people don't understand.
- 20:51SPEAKER_02: People don't understand this.
- 20:52SPEAKER_02: And I was reminded that I was reminded of this when I had a really good conversation over the weekend with a psychologist that was putting on this event that I was invited to.
- 21:03SPEAKER_02: He was just, he's like a specialist, or he's like talks a lot about burnout and type 1 diabetes in adults.
- 21:10SPEAKER_02: And having a conversation with him, I was just, as I was listening to his thoughts on burnout, as I was giving my thoughts on burnout and identity and and mental health and all these things, it was, it just reiterated for me how much people don't realize that the stress hormones, the anxiety, the fight of fight or flight that we get ourselves into when we're stressed out, how much that increases insulin resistance and shoots cortisol up and changes with our body chemistry.
- 21:46SPEAKER_02: It 100% does.
- 21:56SPEAKER_02: I I would consider it the same, the same or kind of The same, I don't, I mean, you as meditation almost, right?
- 22:04SPEAKER_02: Because and in a biological sense, again, I'm not a biologist, I'm not a doctor, this is my own personal thoughts.
- 22:11SPEAKER_02: In a biological sense, it seems like when you're when when you're sitting down and surrendering to prayer, to meditation, to thoughts, it you're able to re to reduce cortisol levels, reduce anxiety, reduce stress, that's going to put yourself in a better position to one, be able to deal with things mentally, and to be able to like be in a place where you you can want to change behavior, be open to changing behavior.
- 22:44SPEAKER_02: If your blood sugars are really high, and you're gonna go pray, and you're putting yourself in this ment meditory meditation state, and you're you're able to surrender to those emotions, that's gonna be very impactful and positive for you.
- 23:00SPEAKER_02: 100%.
- 23:02SPEAKER_02: Because you're dealing with the emotion, you're dealing with the anxiety, you're putting yourself in a very calm situation.
- 23:10SPEAKER_02: That's why meditation works for so many people.
- 23:13SPEAKER_02: And I would argue that that's why prayer probably works for so many people.
- 23:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 23:18SPEAKER_02: But but for me, to sit here and say, like, oh, I just prayed and all of a sudden I'm not a diabetic anymore, type 2 diabetic.
- 23:25SPEAKER_02: I've I reduced all my levels, there's something that you there's something else biologically that's has to be going on.
- 23:32SPEAKER_02: You can't be doing the same, you can't have the same lifestyle that got you to that point and not change up any of that lifestyle, but then all of a sudden you have all this faith, or you like you're able to get into these positions and pray all the time.
- 23:44SPEAKER_02: And like, I don't know.
- 23:46SPEAKER_02: Again, I'm not a doctor, I'm not like a biologist, so it's just my own thoughts.
- 23:50SPEAKER_00: Two things.
- 23:50SPEAKER_00: First of all, I don't always agree with you.
- 23:53SPEAKER_00: That was very well said, actually.
- 23:55SPEAKER_00: Very, very well on a very unique topic.
- 23:57SPEAKER_00: I I think it's very well said, and I completely agree with you.
- 24:00SPEAKER_00: But the second thing is people, you know, you're people go really, really, really low and you find and then when you find Jesus and you're on the other side of it, it's very easy to lose sight again of what it looks like to be low or to be like.
- 24:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 24:17SPEAKER_00: Did look at me confused a little bit in the beginning where it was like, why don't you just try like other like you know, and people, you know, uh people have a preconceived notion of anything diabetes, you know, no matter what it is.
- 24:29SPEAKER_00: And I think that's a little bit of it.
- 24:31SPEAKER_00: But as you just said, you know, it's um the life is so god, like the lenses of life are so different when you're just breathing and calm.
- 24:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah, because you're surrendering to everything instead of like putting putting these walls up against everything.
- 24:46SPEAKER_02: That's why I love the I I I should have like I sometimes kick myself in the ass for not having which I mean, which I wouldn't have had the awareness because I was such an immature stute college student.
- 25:01SPEAKER_02: Like I wish I would have gone down the the route of like a like an actual doctorate or an actual psychologist because I just I love this stuff.
- 25:10SPEAKER_02: I love the mental health stuff because not because I I understand it and um it's so powerful to me, but because I went through it myself.
- 25:18SPEAKER_02: I experienced the lows.
- 25:21SPEAKER_02: I experienced the denial, the depression, I experienced the hiding of everything.
- 25:26SPEAKER_02: I know what it takes to come out of it because I had to do it myself.
- 25:29SPEAKER_02: And I think that's so that's so more impactful than someone that's just educated from a book and from maybe some life experiences of dealing with different things that can sit down with someone and then guide them through a conversation, right?
- 25:46SPEAKER_02: Your life experiences are everything.
- 25:49SPEAKER_02: And that's why I believe that I'm such a good diabetes coach as well, because my life experiences have given me all this information to be able to sit down with someone and map through, okay, well, this is what's going on.
- 26:03SPEAKER_02: Maybe it's this, maybe it's that.
- 26:05SPEAKER_02: Okay, have you tried this?
- 26:06SPEAKER_02: Oh, you've tried that.
- 26:07SPEAKER_02: Oh, perfect.
- 26:08SPEAKER_02: Okay, and and start peeling back the onions of what might be going on instead of going into your doctor's office, getting like telling your doctor, like, I don't know what the heck's going on.
- 26:19SPEAKER_02: My blood sugar's all over the place.
- 26:20SPEAKER_02: Like, oh, well, let me just change, let's just change your medications.
- 26:23SPEAKER_02: When I would argue that most of the time it's not a medication and that's not an insulin problem.
- 26:30SPEAKER_02: It's how you are mentally dealing with things, it's how it's the habits and in in that you have in place, it's how you're actually strategically dosing and making decisions.
- 26:40SPEAKER_02: Like there's not extra I mean, we can go on forever about it, but so I think that the the biggest thing that I want people to understand, especially just from this conversation, is if you can if you can get yourself to a place where you're able to take a step back and breathe and surrender, so many positive things will happen.
- 27:09SPEAKER_02: I promise.
- 27:10SPEAKER_02: It's gonna be uncomfortable, it's gonna be really challenging, it's gonna be hard, there's gonna be stories that you're not gonna like that you're that's that you're saying to yourself.
- 27:20SPEAKER_02: But surrendering is so important because when you surrender, things can like the dominoes can start falling, falling, falling.
- 27:31SPEAKER_02: The dominoes will start falling if you s if you're able to get to a place where you can surrender and just allow it to happen.
- 27:38SPEAKER_02: Don't don't put don't put the brakes on it.
- 27:41SPEAKER_02: You sound like a surrender.
- 27:43SPEAKER_00: You sound like an AM Christian Christian mourning station with all this surrendering in Jesus in prayer talk.
- 27:50SPEAKER_02: I didn't say anything about Jesus.
- 27:51SPEAKER_02: I said surrender devotions.
- 27:54SPEAKER_01: Are you I'm not bringing Jesus in this religious?
- 28:00SPEAKER_01: Christian?
- 28:01SPEAKER_01: Nothing?
- 28:01SPEAKER_01: Non-denial no not really.
- 28:05SPEAKER_01: I'm Catholic.
- 28:08SPEAKER_02: I was I was baptized Lutheran.
- 28:10SPEAKER_02: I was I grew up around Christians, I grew up around around Lutherans, I grew up around Catholics, I grew up around all of them.
- 28:18SPEAKER_02: And I think that they're all of those religions and all of those beliefs are amazing.
- 28:23SPEAKER_02: But I d I don't know.
- 28:24SPEAKER_00: It's uh yeah, it's you know, I am really happy I brought it up.
- 28:29SPEAKER_00: You brought it up because you actually get did give me very different perspective to to what that person was saying to me.
- 28:36SPEAKER_00: And I think you're right, and I'll just repeat it.
- 28:39SPEAKER_00: It's I think often with people, it's kind of like a chicken, chicken or like it's chicken or the egg.
- 28:45SPEAKER_00: Like what really came first, you know, like like people say like uh all the stars lined up.
- 28:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it might it might have been where it wasn't just one thing that turned for you, like a couple things got a couple things had to get better for you to be better, type of deal, right?
- 29:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 29:00SPEAKER_02: But that's what I'm saying.
- 29:02SPEAKER_02: Like, I think again, I think prayer is amazing, man.
- 29:04SPEAKER_02: Like it's just it helps so many people.
- 29:07SPEAKER_02: But just like anything, for someone to say to to us or say to me who isn't about praying, right?
- 29:15SPEAKER_02: I I would more consider that, like, if I'm gonna go do something like that, I'm gonna more consider that I'm gonna go meditate.
- 29:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah, 100%.
- 29:22SPEAKER_02: Right?
- 29:23SPEAKER_02: So for someone to say, like, just go, just go pray, just go pray.
- 29:27SPEAKER_02: Well, I'm not open to that.
- 29:29SPEAKER_02: So that's not gonna work, regardless of how much I would want to do it or not.
- 29:33SPEAKER_02: Like, I'm just not open to it.
- 29:34SPEAKER_02: Like, I'm like, just like with the addiction thing we've talked about before, or you know, getting to a place of wanting support and asking for help.
- 29:43SPEAKER_02: If you're not open to that, it doesn't matter how much someone else wants you to do it or not.
- 29:49SPEAKER_02: You're just not open to it, so it's not gonna work until you are open to it, until you are a surrendering to it, like it's not gonna work.
- 29:57SPEAKER_01: So power episode.
- 29:59SPEAKER_01: Thanks for your time.
- 30:01SPEAKER_02: Thank you for your time.
- 30:02SPEAKER_02: Going back to rage bullsing, guys, be conscious of it.
- 30:06SPEAKER_02: Okay, if you feel yourself frustrated with the decisions, if you feel yourself frustrated with blood sugars, you can't get them down for whatever reason, go through your checklists, go through your steps.
- 30:18SPEAKER_02: It might not be an insulin problem.
- 30:20SPEAKER_02: It might be your pump, it might be your CGM might be off, it might just be you needed more insulin for the food that you consumed because you didn't you didn't take enough.
- 30:29SPEAKER_02: So try to surrender to the emotions and you know, practice and work on the frustration piece.
- 30:39SPEAKER_02: You're allowed to be frustrated.
- 30:41SPEAKER_02: But if you got all this anxiety and just like now it's taking you forever and ever and ever, and it's it's taking up all the time of your day just thinking about this, that's when we got to start making adjustments to how you're dealing with it and how you're navigating it.
- 30:55SPEAKER_02: And and I can help you with that.
- 30:57SPEAKER_02: And, you know, like think about think about those things that you need support with, and then go find the support.
- 31:06SPEAKER_02: I hope that you're getting it on this podcast.
- 31:09SPEAKER_02: I hope you're getting it from your friends and family, from social media.
- 31:11SPEAKER_02: I hope you're getting some support from your from your endocrinologist, from your medical team.
- 31:16SPEAKER_02: I would argue about how much you're getting, but it's still support.
- 31:20SPEAKER_02: So find the support that you need because you deserve to be thriving and not struggling and dealing with all the highs and lows of diabetes.
