Latest / DEEP INSIGHT / What to expect from Trumps meeting with Mamdani
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: In just hours, a highly anticipated meeting that could bring
- 0:02Speaker 1: high drama to the White House. We may only hear
- 0:05Speaker 1: about it but never see it. President Trump will host
- 0:08Speaker 1: New York City mayor elect. So we're on Mamdannie at
- 0:11Speaker 1: the White House this afternoon and this morning. We're learning
- 0:14Speaker 1: about Mam Donnie's preparation for this high stakes meeting by
- 0:17Speaker 1: calling on some high profile Democrats like Hakeem Jeffries and
- 0:21Speaker 1: Chuck Schumer for advice on how to best communicate with
- 0:24Speaker 1: President Trump. The President has been repeatedly insulting Mam Donnie,
- 0:28Speaker 1: threatening to withhold federal friends from New York, and referring
- 0:32Speaker 1: to him as a communist over and over again, which
- 0:34Speaker 1: he is not. Still, maum Donnie has said he wants
- 0:37Speaker 1: to talk to the President and focus on ways that
- 0:41Speaker 1: he can help New Yorker. Seen as Gloria Pasmino has
- 0:43Speaker 1: been following Mam Donnie's trail for the longest. What are
- 0:48Speaker 1: you learning this morning about this meeting?
- 0:50Speaker 2: Look, this is high stakes. This is a really big
- 0:53Speaker 2: moment for the mayor elect, but frankly also for the president.
- 0:56Speaker 2: We have seen in the last few days that President
- 0:59Speaker 2: Donald Trump has been speaking about affordability he has talked
- 1:02Speaker 2: about how Democrats use this word and reference to groceries
- 1:06Speaker 2: in order to win the last bunch of elections that
- 1:09Speaker 2: we saw just a couple of weeks ago. But of course,
- 1:12Speaker 2: as we know, affordability and groceries and the cost of
- 1:14Speaker 2: living is something that is on the minds of so
- 1:17Speaker 2: many Americans and was certainly on the minds of many
- 1:20Speaker 2: of the New Yorkers who voted for Zora Mamnani just
- 1:23Speaker 2: a few days ago and elected him to be the
- 1:24Speaker 2: next mayor. So we're going to see a very interesting
- 1:28Speaker 2: back and forth. Hopefully for now. We're told that this
- 1:31Speaker 2: meeting is behind closed doors, but Sarah, you know things
- 1:33Speaker 2: that the White House can be a bit unpredictable, and
- 1:36Speaker 2: the question here is whether or not Donald Trump might
- 1:39Speaker 2: open up those doors and allow the cameras to come in.
- 1:42Speaker 2: And what happens then then will be even more interesting
- 1:46Speaker 2: because we've seen how some of these public meetings play
- 1:50Speaker 2: out before, where he meets with, whether it's as state
- 1:53Speaker 2: leaders or leaders from other countries, sometimes he tries to
- 1:56Speaker 2: embarrass them. We saw Vladimir Selinski get braided for not
- 2:01Speaker 2: wearing a suit to the White House, so it could
- 2:03Speaker 2: really go off the rails, and mom Nani knows that
- 2:06Speaker 2: he has to kind of be on his feet, so
- 2:08Speaker 2: he got some advice on how to do that from
- 2:12Speaker 2: Senator Chuck Schumer, Haqem Jeffries, Governor Kathy Hokl. All of
- 2:15Speaker 2: them have had conversations and have a relationship, even if
- 2:20Speaker 2: a tense one at times. With President Trump. We know
- 2:22Speaker 2: that mam Nani is on his way. He's tweeted just
- 2:25Speaker 2: a short while ago a selfie from what it looks
- 2:28Speaker 2: like the inside of an airplane. There you see him.
- 2:32Speaker 2: He says it was just an airplane emoji. So he
- 2:35Speaker 2: is on his way to DC. But you know, considering
- 2:39Speaker 2: what we know about how these two men have spoken
- 2:41Speaker 2: about one another in the last few months, I think
- 2:44Speaker 2: there's a lot of people who are going to be
- 2:46Speaker 2: closely watching to see how it goes. Tick a listen
- 2:48Speaker 2: to just how Trump and mam Nani have been talking
- 2:51Speaker 2: about each other in recent weeks.
- 2:59Speaker 3: It's going to be hard for me as the president
- 3:02Speaker 3: to give a lot of money to New York because
- 3:05Speaker 3: if you have a communist running New York, all you're
- 3:08Speaker 3: doing is wasting the money you're sending there.
- 3:11Speaker 4: I have many disagreements with the President, and I believe
- 3:14Speaker 4: that we should be relentless and pursue all avenues and
- 3:18Speaker 4: all meetings that could make our city affordable for every
- 3:22Speaker 4: single New Yorker. I intend to make it clear to
- 3:25Speaker 4: President Trump that I will work with him on any
- 3:27Speaker 4: agenda that benefits New Yorkers. If an agenda hurts New Yorkers,
- 3:33Speaker 4: I will also be the first to say something.
- 3:35Speaker 3: Now, Sara.
- 3:36Speaker 2: As diametrically opposed as these two men are, I also
- 3:39Speaker 2: think that they actually have something in common, and that
- 3:43Speaker 2: is they both have figured out a very effective way
- 3:46Speaker 2: to communicate with their supporters. These two are from New York,
- 3:50Speaker 2: They're both from Queens. I think President Trump sees something
- 3:53Speaker 2: in mom Nani that perhaps I would venture to say,
- 3:56Speaker 2: he admires, you know the way that he has used
- 3:59Speaker 2: social media to really reach out to his supporters, and
- 4:03Speaker 2: you know his focus on affordability and really what is
- 4:06Speaker 2: a populous message that he himself used to get so
- 4:10Speaker 2: many of his supporters right.
- 4:11Speaker 1: The affordability issue is the economy. It's just another word
- 4:14Speaker 1: for it, and that's how Donald Trump got into office himself.
- 4:17Speaker 1: This is going to be an interesting meeting and what
- 4:19Speaker 1: we are all waiting for to see if it is
- 4:21Speaker 1: actually going to be made public. We will see, Lauria,
- 4:23Speaker 1: if that's been our Thank you so much for your
- 4:24Speaker 1: great reporting job.
- 4:25Speaker 5: All right, Willius Now Republican strategist Neil Chatterjee and Executive
- 4:28Speaker 5: committee chair of the New York State Democratic Committee. Christine
- 4:31Speaker 5: Quinn a New York City person through and through. And Christine,
- 4:35Speaker 5: let me ask this to you. I know it's the
- 4:36Speaker 5: wrong neighborhood. They're both from Queen's. But if this were
- 4:39Speaker 5: like a West Side Story thing, what happens when the
- 4:40Speaker 5: Sharks and the Jets both show up to the Oval Office,
- 4:42Speaker 5: what's going to happen today?
- 4:45Speaker 6: Well, I think the ending's going to be very different
- 4:48Speaker 6: than it was in the player, the movie. You know, Look,
- 4:51Speaker 6: the mayor elect is doing what is customary, going to
- 4:54Speaker 6: see the president, the mayor elect of the biggest city
- 4:57Speaker 6: in the country, and he's going to take his affordability
- 5:01Speaker 6: agenda to the President and hopefully they will be able
- 5:04Speaker 6: to find some common ground because the mayor elect to
- 5:07Speaker 6: said over and over he'll work with anybody who is
- 5:09Speaker 6: committed to making the lives of New Yorkers better and
- 5:12Speaker 6: more affordable.
- 5:14Speaker 5: Do you feel Neil that that is where the incentive
- 5:17Speaker 5: structure is here from a political standpoint to both of
- 5:20Speaker 5: these men have an incentive to behave and make this
- 5:23Speaker 5: a constructive discussion, or are they perhaps incentivized to make
- 5:27Speaker 5: it a show.
- 5:30Speaker 7: Yeah, Look, this is all going to be theater and
- 5:33Speaker 7: maybe not the Sharks and the Jets. My daughter is
- 5:35Speaker 7: starring in The Outsiders later today, the socials versus the Greasers.
- 5:40Speaker 7: This is going to be pure theater. It is good
- 5:43Speaker 7: politics for both of them. For the President, he wants
- 5:47Speaker 7: to elevate Madam. He wants him to be the face
- 5:50Speaker 7: of the National Democrat Party. He wants Republicans to run
- 5:54Speaker 7: against Mandami in the midterms, and this is a way
- 5:57Speaker 7: of platforming him, giving him a big stage, putting him
- 6:01Speaker 7: on the stage, making him that figure for the mayor elect.
- 6:04Speaker 7: This is an opportunity to demonstrate fight. That's what the
- 6:07Speaker 7: Democrat base wants right now. They want someone who's willing
- 6:10Speaker 7: to go toe to toe and fight with President Trump.
- 6:14Speaker 7: I do think this will be largely theatric. I do think,
- 6:18Speaker 7: as was previously mentioned, these guys kind of you know,
- 6:22Speaker 7: have similar approaches though different ideologies, and I think this
- 6:27Speaker 7: is great for both of them to be totally honest politically.
- 6:30Speaker 5: All right, If Neil is right, Christine, this is the outsiders.
- 6:33Speaker 5: Will Mendanni stay gold pony boy? If President Trump does
- 6:38Speaker 5: go after him as a constituent here in New York City,
- 6:42Speaker 5: do you want him to rise to the occasion? Do
- 6:45Speaker 5: you want to see him? Is it more important than
- 6:46Speaker 5: he goes toe to toe with the President or is
- 6:49Speaker 5: it more important that he charms him and gets what
- 6:50Speaker 5: he wants from him.
- 6:53Speaker 6: Well, I think we can all agree his campaign was
- 6:56Speaker 6: both Tony Award winning and Academy Award winning. But that said,
- 7:00Speaker 6: keeping this theme going, Look, I think the Mayor elect
- 7:04Speaker 6: is incredibly focused on getting every level of government and
- 7:07Speaker 6: every level of society committed to making the biggest city
- 7:11Speaker 6: in the country more affordable for everyone. So no matter
- 7:14Speaker 6: what your job is, you can have a full, dignified life,
- 7:17Speaker 6: a life where your children can do better than you.
- 7:20Speaker 6: I think he is going there, you know, with an
- 7:22Speaker 6: open heart and open mind to see where they can
- 7:25Speaker 6: come together. I don't believe, knowing the Mayor elect, that
- 7:28Speaker 6: this is really about theater. It's about trying to get
- 7:31Speaker 6: a goal accomplished. We're out of the campaign we're into government.
- 7:36Speaker 5: So what's interesting is that Zaura Memdani has been talking
- 7:38Speaker 5: about affordability since he launched his campaign, and he's been
- 7:42Speaker 5: doing it in a way they connected with voters. Neil,
- 7:44Speaker 5: President Trump has been using the word affordability for like
- 7:47Speaker 5: a week and doesn't seem to like it. You can
- 7:50Speaker 5: see him almost say, you know, they call it affordability.
- 7:52Speaker 5: He puts it almost in air quotes there, and it
- 7:55Speaker 5: seems to be something the administration is having a challenge discussing.
- 8:00Speaker 5: Listen to what Jade Vans, the Vice President, says about this.
- 8:04Speaker 4: Even though we've made incredible progress, we understand that there's
- 8:07Speaker 4: a lot more work to do.
- 8:09Speaker 5: And the thing that I'd ask for the American people
- 8:11Speaker 5: is a.
- 8:11Speaker 1: Little bit of patience.
- 8:12Speaker 5: This economy was not harmed in ten months. So now Neil,
- 8:20Speaker 5: they're saying people have to wait a little bit. While
- 8:22Speaker 5: they're running the campaign, it was the type of thing
- 8:23Speaker 5: like day one, I'm going to do X, Y and Z.
- 8:25Speaker 5: Now they're going to have to wait. But to what
- 8:27Speaker 5: extent do you think that the White House is struggling
- 8:31Speaker 5: not with the economy, but with the messaging on the economy.
- 8:35Speaker 7: Yeah, look, this is they're making missteps. To be totally candidate.
- 8:40Speaker 7: You know, my backgrounds have energy and electricity. Electricity prices
- 8:44Speaker 7: were a huge issue in the November elections in Virginia.
- 8:48Speaker 7: In New Jersey, electricity prices are through the roof and inexplicably.
- 8:53Speaker 7: The administration has been taking steps to create obstacles to
- 8:57Speaker 7: the deployment of clean energy of solar and battery storage
- 9:01Speaker 7: and wind at a time when demanded through the roof
- 9:05Speaker 7: and we need every available electron. I think they have
- 9:09Speaker 7: time to get it right, but they need to make
- 9:12Speaker 7: some shifts on policy. Don't constrain clean energy at a
- 9:17Speaker 7: moment in time.
- 9:18Speaker 3: When we need it.
- 9:19Speaker 7: If you want to bring down electricity prices, let's unleash
- 9:23Speaker 7: all of the above energy, which is what the President
- 9:25Speaker 7: talked about on the campaign trail. They haven't governed in
- 9:28Speaker 7: that way. I'm hoping they will course correct.
- 9:31Speaker 5: Noil chatategy corsinquin.
- 9:37Speaker 6: Having to wait with all of these failed policies is
- 9:40Speaker 6: people lose their jobs, people lose their homes. Time is
- 9:43Speaker 6: a terrible thing in this affordability crisis. It's real life
- 9:47Speaker 6: for Americans, you know.
- 9:49Speaker 5: Just in terms of political messaging, saying wait, wait, wait
- 9:52Speaker 5: is always a hard a hard thing to sell. But
- 9:55Speaker 5: we'll see what else they have over the next coming
- 9:57Speaker 5: days and we steal strategy corsinquin. Great to see you,
- 10:00Speaker 5: oh thanks for playing along.
