- 0:00SPEAKER_00: How to unlock faster career progression without needing to work crazy hours.
- 0:05SPEAKER_00: Getting promoted way faster than your competition is not about putting in more hours or being better than them or sucking up to your boss.
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: Unlocking faster career progression is about understanding the game that you need to play.
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: It is understanding the components that go into being a clear favourite for promotion.
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: It's about creating a repeatable system that you can use again and again throughout your career.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: I was promoted 13 times all the way up to board level.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: I've worked in many great companies, from corporates and household names through to large SMEs.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: I've beaten many individuals with a lot more experience than me to job offers.
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: Getting promoted way faster than your peers is a combination of actions consistently taken and is applicable for internal promotions as well as moving company to game promotion.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: You should start working towards your next promotion on the first day of your new position.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: Creating the achievements, profile, and relationships needed for promotion doesn't happen overnight.
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: You need more than a few months.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: Create a framework or plan and consistently work towards your next promotion from day one.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: Here are five very important elements to include in your framework or plan.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: Firstly, to unlock faster career progression, create and capture your achievements.
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: To stand out, you need achievements.
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: If you only do what everyone else is doing, you will be invisible.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: You can work all hours, churn out work and not get anywhere fast.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: I've seen a lot of people do just this, thinking it will get them promoted and they are still waiting.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: Be proactive, don't be passive.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: Secondly, not all achievements are equal.
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: The achievements you specifically should target are ones that are expected of those doing the role that you want to get promoted into, not your current role.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: This is about demonstrating that you can do the next role you want.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: Showing that you can do your current role well is not the same.
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: So find those mini projects, plan out your actions, run it past your boss to get permission to implement and then go for it.
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: Putting the extra hours into showing you can do your next role well rather than showing that you're good at your current role.
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: A great way to find these projects is to build relationships with those doing the role that you want and ask them what their challenges are.
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: Ask to help out.
- 2:39SPEAKER_00: Speak to those they manage and find out what they are focusing on, what problems they are wrestling with.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: Get a copy of their job description.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: Find and ask people outside of your company doing your target role.
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: Your achievements must save time, reduce costs, reduce risk, grow revenue, increase cash or align with key team and business targets.
- 3:03SPEAKER_00: You want to ensure your achievements help overcome current challenges.
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: This alone will make them a lot more visible.
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: Always make the time to capture your achievements, capture the situation before you started work.
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: Detail out the key steps you took, capture how you left the situation a lot better off.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: Always include numbers to quantify the improvements.
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: Achievements give you the ammunition for conversations with bosses and leadership team members.
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: The more achievements you have, the more you have to talk about and market yourself internally with.
- 3:39SPEAKER_00: Create and capture achievements that demonstrate that you can do your next job well.

- 4:21SPEAKER_00: Secondly, the next critical strategy for faster career progression is to develop your successes.
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: If promoting you is going to leave a hole or a set of problems behind, guess what?
- 4:33SPEAKER_00: Your boss or leadership team members will be reluctant to move you and therefore promote you.
- 4:39SPEAKER_00: The individuals and managers that consistently get promoted work to ensure they have solved this succession problem or remove this barrier to promotion before they start pushing for promotion.
- 4:51SPEAKER_00: Developing the skills and experience of your better team members for the specific purpose of taking over parts of your role.
- 4:59SPEAKER_00: This has a ton of benefits.
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: Firstly, they get development, which is motivational, rewarding, and increases retention.
- 5:07SPEAKER_00: Secondly, improving their skills means you have more time to improve yours.
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: Third, you build a more resilient team capable of doing more andor doing it quicker, i.e., better team performance.
- 5:20SPEAKER_00: Fourth, team output usually increases over time with intelligent development.
- 5:25SPEAKER_00: Increased team performance always reflects well on the manager.
- 5:29SPEAKER_00: Some managers feel less secure in their jobs if they train their replacement.
- 5:34SPEAKER_00: This risk does increase, yet, if you keep increasing the value that you are delivering for your company, your boss will be crazy to get rid of you.
- 5:43SPEAKER_00: Plus, with better skills, you'll find it easier to get another job elsewhere.
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: Another option is to create a replacement plan so your boss doesn't have to worry about the replacement problem.
- 5:54SPEAKER_00: Think who could be promoted within the company to fill your role and how to backfill them.
- 5:59SPEAKER_00: Or come up with a credible recruitment plan to get your replacement and offer to run this process so your boss doesn't have to.
- 6:07SPEAKER_00: Always plan out how you're going to backfill your role and discuss this with your boss when talking about promotion.
- 6:13SPEAKER_00: Another critical strategy to unlock faster career progression in any role is to win your boss's support.
- 6:21SPEAKER_00: Your boss can be an amazing advocate for your promotion, or they can absolutely kill your promotion prospects.
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: You absolutely want your boss shouting from the rooftops to their bosses and peers about how good you are, how well you could do in the next role, and how much you would benefit the company with more responsibility and more impact.
- 6:42SPEAKER_00: Promotions are group decisions.
- 6:44SPEAKER_00: Your boss has a lot of influence on those promotion meetings, and leadership team members, HR and other managers will be guided by your boss's feedback on you.
- 6:54SPEAKER_00: Here are five very valuable actions to consistently take with your boss.
- 6:59SPEAKER_00: Firstly, mentally list out what you admire about your boss.
- 7:03SPEAKER_00: Remember, even nightmare bosses have good points.
- 7:06SPEAKER_00: Focus on these points so you have a positive attitude towards your boss every time you meet with them.
- 7:12SPEAKER_00: You need to cultivate a positive attitude towards your boss to gain their support.
- 7:17SPEAKER_00: Secondly, work to remove problems from your boss's list.
- 7:21SPEAKER_00: Do not add to them.
- 7:23SPEAKER_00: So come up with solutions to problems you find.
- 7:26SPEAKER_00: Ask your boss if you can take responsibility for some of the problems that they have to deal with.
- 7:31SPEAKER_00: Always do your work and deliver against your personal targets.
- 7:34SPEAKER_00: Help your team members hit their targets.
- 7:37SPEAKER_00: Be easy to work alongside and with.
- 7:40SPEAKER_00: Build positive relationships.
- 7:42SPEAKER_00: Third, be a positive force in the team.
- 7:45SPEAKER_00: Don't annoy, anger, put down, or backstab team members.
- 7:49SPEAKER_00: Work on being a good team player, supporting colleagues' successes.
- 7:53SPEAKER_00: Fourth, build a positive relationship with your boss on a personal as well as a professional level.
- 7:58SPEAKER_00: Both are important.
- 8:00SPEAKER_00: You find out what they like doing and get them talking about it.
- 8:03SPEAKER_00: Create connection.
- 8:04SPEAKER_00: Support your boss.
- 8:06SPEAKER_00: Do your best to reduce their pressures.
- 8:08SPEAKER_00: And fifth, try to make your boss look good.
- 8:11SPEAKER_00: Talk your boss up to other teams and colleagues around the business.
- 8:15SPEAKER_00: Help your boss hit targets.
- 8:17SPEAKER_00: Help your boss manage and communicate with the team.
- 8:20SPEAKER_00: Anything that puts them in a good light with their bosses and peers.
- 8:25SPEAKER_00: To get your boss's support to gain promotion, you also can't be seen as a walkover, a suck up or any other negative behaviour that would damage your positioning as a future equal to your boss.
- 8:38SPEAKER_00: Treat your boss as an important partner.
- 8:41SPEAKER_00: Be deferential but not too deferential.
- 8:44SPEAKER_00: You will get your boss's support by supporting your boss.
- 8:48SPEAKER_00: Fourth, another important action to unlock faster crew progression is to market yourself proactively and positively.
- 8:56SPEAKER_00: Marketing yourself without appearing self-serving, crass, or too obvious is another really important skill to consistently practice at work, regardless of your level.
- 9:07SPEAKER_00: As you get into management ranks, your ability to communicate and build positive relationships is constantly in the spotlight and essential to getting promoted.
- 9:17SPEAKER_00: Proactively market your achievements and those of your team to your boss, your boss's peers and leadership team members.
- 9:24SPEAKER_00: The way I recommend you that you do this is via updates.
- 9:28SPEAKER_00: Can I give you a quick update on our progress to achieve XXX?
- 9:32SPEAKER_00: We have so far done boom boom boom boom.
- 9:36SPEAKER_00: Or David, do you have two minutes in which I can update you on what my team is doing that might impact your project on XXX?
- 9:44SPEAKER_00: Within these updates, it is important that you quantify the benefits of your work to the person that you're speaking to.
- 9:51SPEAKER_00: Answer the how does this help me question clearly and explicitly.
- 9:56SPEAKER_00: Make clear the progress towards goals and why achieving the goals will be good for them and the business.
- 10:03SPEAKER_00: Make these points as clear as possible.
- 10:05SPEAKER_00: Use numbers or financial data to communicate the scale of the benefit.
- 10:10SPEAKER_00: Think of all the managers in addition to your boss that would benefit from updates so they don't get surprises, so they can coordinate better, so they don't have to solve these problems themselves.
- 10:21SPEAKER_00: Consistently communicate your achievements to others in the business via giving updates to your boss, your boss's peers and leadership team members.
- 10:29SPEAKER_00: Fifth, probably the most important action of all to unlock your next promotion is to look after your fit.
- 10:36SPEAKER_00: Think of each level in any business as a separate group with their own rules, own behaviours and their own signs of membership.
- 10:45SPEAKER_00: Every level in the business has these signs no matter how subtle.
- 10:49SPEAKER_00: It is human nature, the same in every culture around the world, to want to belong, to fit in with the group.
- 10:56SPEAKER_00: This unconscious behavior is hardwired into us through generations of working in groups to firstly survive and then to thrive.
- 11:04SPEAKER_00: Look at the group that you want to join and be promoted into.
- 11:08SPEAKER_00: How do they dress?
- 11:09SPEAKER_00: What hobbies do they have?
- 11:10SPEAKER_00: How do they talk and behave?
- 11:12SPEAKER_00: How do they hold themselves?
- 11:14SPEAKER_00: What confidence levels do they have, personally, socially and professionally?
- 11:18SPEAKER_00: Take a very objective look at what you are currently doing right now.
- 11:23SPEAKER_00: Where are the gaps?
- 11:25SPEAKER_00: What is different?
- 11:27SPEAKER_00: Are you prepared to close those gaps and change how you present yourself?
- 11:31SPEAKER_00: The more you can become consciously aware of the gaps or differences, the more proactively you can work on closing those gaps.
- 11:39SPEAKER_00: You want your bosses thinking, they are like me, or I feel they would fit with us very well, or I can see them getting on with us.
- 11:49SPEAKER_00: When your bosses are thinking in these terms, you have removed a critical barrier which will unblock your career progression.
- 11:56SPEAKER_00: The more consciously you work at fitting in rather than subconsciously, the quicker you'll bridge those gaps.
- 12:03SPEAKER_00: Work to fit in with a group that you want to be promoted into, to get promoted way faster than your peers that don't work at this aspect of getting promoted.
- 12:13SPEAKER_00: In summary, being good at your job and working hard gets you to the starting line for promotion.
- 12:20SPEAKER_00: To actually get your next promotion and keep getting promoted throughout your career, there is a lot more that you need to do to communicate your achievements, build the right relationships, and create the right fit for the next group.
- 12:33SPEAKER_00: Those that take these extra steps keep getting promoted.
- 12:37SPEAKER_00: Those that do not take these steps stay stuck in their roles or stay in those roles far longer than they need to.
- 12:45SPEAKER_00: Please start taking action today.
- 12:47SPEAKER_00: Working smarter is much more important than putting in extra work.
- 12:52SPEAKER_00: Take action.
- 12:54SPEAKER_00: For senior managers looking to break through into their first board role and would like to position themselves to get that promotion a lot faster through internal or external routes.
